Hearts for Horsham Over the summer, St Catherine’s Hospice will be introducing HeART to Heart: a brand new art trail coming to West Sussex and East Surrey.

This exciting new event, running from July 4 to September 19, will give local communities the chance to follow a trail of hearts through Horsham, as well as across the Hospice’s catchment area, with each heart individually and uniquely designed by a local artist.

Hearts for Horsham is the name given to the local campaign to raise money to bring a number of hearts to the Horsham District. This will show our community’s support for the charity and help to bring visitors that are seeking out all of the hearts on the trail.

The community campaign is inspired by the fantastic work that St Catherine’s do to support so many lives in the area and is being led by local St Catherine’s fundraisers, with the support of Horsham District Council and other local organisations.

Deputy leader of Horsham District Council, Jonathan Chowen, is keen to see as many ‘Hearts’ across Horsham District as possible: “Quite apart from sup-

porting the amazing work that St.Catherine’s do in our community, the HeART to Heart trail is a fantastic community art project that will add another dimension to Horsham’s own District Year of Culture in 2019” What’s happening?

Being Valentine’s Day, Thursday 14 February is all about hearts, so what better day to launch the Hearts for Horsham campaign than to buy fund raising hearts for Horsham?

At the heart of the day will be a St. Catherine’s HeART to Heart display on Swan Walk’s mosaic, featuring a few of the hearts that could form part of Horsham’s trail along with their prospective artists and fund raisers from the charity. Possible heart locations include Swan Walk, West Street, The Capitol, Waitrose/John Lewis, Horsham Station, The Forum and Horsham Park.

Horsham incinerator community group seeks further support from locals

Residents need to include their name and address, appeal reference number and site address: Former Wealden Brickworks, Langhurstwood Road, Horsham RH12 4QD. Previous representations about the planning application will be fully considered by the inspector. The appeal documents are available on West Sussex County Council’s online planning register (reference WSCC/015/18/NH) and are also available for inspection at County Hall in Chichester.

Ni4H urgently requires legal advice, consultancy reports by recognised experts, and a barrister, who can explain and present the case for concerned residents, to the Planning Inspector at the Public Inquiry with authority. UK Without Incineration Network (UKWIN) has advised that they may need to raise £30,000 as soon as possible and may need as much as £50,000.

An Ni4H spokesperson said: “Over 5,500 people objected to the planning application - if everyone gave £10 we would raise £55,000; if 250 people gave £200 we would raise £50,000”. Residents have now met to formalise the master plan on how communities will fight the Britaniacrest incinerator appeal.

A No Incinerator 4 Horsham Community Group (Ni4H) spokesperson said: “The meeting was well attended - many thanks to everyone who came along and to all those who sent messages of support. We have a strong, enthusiastic team ready to have fun fundraising and keep busy researching and challenging this appeal.”

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has sent an Appeal Notification Letter to people who made representations to them about the planning application for the 95m tall structure, which critics say will be visible from as far away as Box

Hill in Surrey. A copy of the letter is on the updated Ni4H website (www.ni4h.org). Residents are being encouraged to get involved – If you did not write at application stage, or you did write and now have something new to say, or wish to modify/withdraw your previous representation, you must do so by 25 February 2019 (quoting APP/ P3800/W/18/3218965).

New Pump Track launch date announced

Local residents of Horsham are invited to join the Highwood

Village Community Open Day, featuring the official opening of the Pump track and launch of

public art sculpture project on Sunday 10 February.

The public event will be held between 11am – 2pm, and visitors will be able to enjoy many activities on the day.

At 11.30am and 1pm there will be an exciting demonstration on the pump track which shouldn’t be missed, and with a selection of 30 bikes, visitors can take to the track to ride the ramps, half pipes and drops on the new track.

The event also marks the start of an exciting new public art installation at Highwood Village, which is part of the Horsham District Year of Culture. Local artist, Jon Edgar will start to sculpt and carve a six tonne stone, and will use input from local residents and passers-by to contribute to the carving. The new public art installation will emerge through-

out 2019, with the final sculpture expected to be completed in 2020.

Jon Edgar explained: “I will be inviting the public to make the very first chisel marks on the stone at the opening day. As local people become involved through the year, I will draw inspiration from them too. It becomes their stone, carved within - and at the heart of - their community.”

Many tributes paid to Horsham’s John Barrott DRIVING PRICES DOWN

Family, former BBC colleagues and many friends have expressed their sadness at the passing of well known and much loved Horsham character John Barrott.

John made and kept friends very easily, greatly enriching their lives, Nick Holman telling the District Post: “Our families were neighbours in West Grinstead and John has been a great and trusted friend all my life. We shared a mutual interest in horses and racing and I enjoyed a number of trips to courses with him.”

John was also a highly respected lighting engineer with the BBC, for many years working on the top shows, including Only Fools and Horses, The Two Ronnies, Miss World (at the Albert Hall) and on location around the UK and abroad with the BBC Film Unit. Pat Deveney worked with John on numerous assignments, saying: “John was a very interesting, clever man, and a highly experienced electrician, earning him huge respect – we enjoyed working with the big names, of course, but it was demanding and John had a lot of responsibility to ensure that there were no technical problems. He was always great fun to be with and it

was a pleasure to accompany him on our visits to the Cheltenham Festival.”

Ted Turpin also worked with John Barrott at the BBC TV Centre, at the Film Unit and on many foreign assignments, recalling: “We were in the production team of a BBC TV drama in Kenya, preparing for night filming in open grassland about five miles from Nairobi and we’d arranged some working lights for the crew to do their set up. After the rehearsals it was time to switch on the much larger lights for the filming – big, much brighter lamps on tall stands, about 15 feet high. Unbeknown to us we had attracted the attention of several ostriches, hidden in the surrounding darkness. The temperature was very pleasant, so everyone was wearing shorts.

When we were all ready to shoot, the filming lights were switched on and it took a little while for them to reach full brightness – and once this happened an ostrich – eight feet tall, powerful and very dangerous - got spooked, suddenly charging across the set in blind panic. John was standing at the base of one of the lamps and the ostrich headed straight at him, but he deftly stepped out of

its path just before it crashed into the stand. Everyone was terrified, but John calmly said ‘did you see that? He saw my legs and couldn’t resist me!’”

Another long term friend, locally based Jim Morey, added: “John was an important part of my life for a very long time. His huge number of friends will miss him, but he’s left us with many happy memories.” Coming from a horse racing family, John Barrott was well-connected in racing circles and had an encyclopaedic appreciation of the sport, relishing in big race days. He also had a rich fund of general knowledge and retained his entertaining sense of humour to the end. In bravely borne failing health, proud father and grandfather John died 10 days beyond his 80th birthday - leaving his wife Beryl, after 53 years of marriage, along with daughters Caroline and Sarah in Sussex, and Gina in Australia, with their eight children - three boys and five girls. The service celebrating John Barrott’s full life will be at Worthing Crematorium’s Kingswood Chapel, Worthing Road, Findon, BN14 0RG at 11am on Thursday February 7th.

Weekly lottery run by council will benefit Horsham District good causes

Local charities are set to benefit from a new council - run lottery scheme in the Horsham District.

At a Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting on 24 January, councillors backed proposals to establish a new community lottery.

This exciting new initiative will give local voluntary and community groups the opportunity to increase the money they raise for their community work across the District.

Residents will be able to help raise income for their favourite good causes and be in with a chance of winning a cash prize themselves.

The Council will be working with an external company to set up the lottery. This organisation will also be responsible for the day-to-day running of

the scheme.

The scheme will launch as a year- long trial, will include a top prize of £25,000 and other smaller prizes, and will be free for local good causes to join.

Voluntary organisations and charities wishing to benefit will put their details on a bespoke website. Players will then buy tickets online and have the option to nominate a preferred cause to receive the money generated.

Councillor Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community and Well Being, said: “I am pleased that the Council will be establishing a community lottery later this year.

“The council really values all the work that local good causes carry out week in, week out in our communities. This initiative will give them the opportunity to raise more money to continue their important work.

“I would urge local groups to watch out for more information later in the year on how they can join the scheme.”

These types of lotteries have become more established over recent years, with over 30 UK councils establishing lotteries to raise additional funds in the voluntary sector.

“Friends of Shipley School’, aka FOSS, is a charity that is run by a small group of parents whose children attend rural Shipley CE Primary School. Our aim is to raise funds to support the school and be able to enrich the pupils’ time whilst at the school by funding projects and operating a ‘Wish List”, where pupils and staff can request items that will benefit the school and their learning.

Whilst the school is small in size, it’s BIG in heart, but with only 67 pupils at the school spanning from Reception through to Year 6, raising large amounts of money can seem quite daunting!

This is where FOSS, along with teachers and pupils, were delighted when we were chosen to be part of the Tesco ‘Bags of Help Scheme’ and this is where YOU can help us too!

Our Outdoor climbing equipment ‘Trim Trail’ is coming to the end of its sustainable life; This original wooden climbing structure was put in place over 15 years ago with funds raised by parents of some of our current ‘Parents’ i.e. Grandparents of pupils now attending the school and has, with time, started to rot. Mrs Harvey, our Headteacher, along with FOSS Committee members, sourced ideas from pupils for what they would like from school play equipment specialists, and with a ‘Fitness’ theme in mind, a climbing assault course that will be inclusive of all children aged 4-11was decided, looking at a total

spend of approx. £5-8k.

There have been countless fundraisers within school so far, from Movie nights, Friendship Fridays, Animal handling with ‘Jaws N Claws’, numerous clothes recycling collections with ‘Bags of Support’, and we even had a ‘Royal Wedding’ garden party last year! Collectively, we have raised a phenomenal amount of money, considering the size of the school, but with time against us we needed help! A parent recommended that the school applied for the ‘Bags of Help’, a scheme run by www.Groundwork.org who offers grants to local projects like us. AND WE WERE ACCEPTED!!!

Local Historian publishes new book:A-Z of Horsham Places People History

Local historian, Eddy Greenfield, has written for a number of local magazines in the Sussex area.

The West Sussex based writer is proud to announce the release of his new book and it’s all about Horsham!

“The A–Z of Horsham delves into the history of this West Sussex market town.

It highlights well-known town landmarks, famous (and infamous) residents and digs beneath the surface to

uncover some of the lesserknown facts and hidden gems of Horsham. The town’s most significant landmarks and buildings include the Old Town Hall (scene of the Acid Bath Murder trials in 1949), the lonely tower of St Mark’s Church and Christ’s Hospital School, but Horsham’s story also includes tales of criminal, military, political, social and ancient history.

Plans for major capital investment to deliver improved infrastructure and facilities for Horsham District

At a Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting on 24 January, councillors confirmed that the Council, for the next financial year (2019/20), will be in a position to maintain all its services and deliver a £19.8 million capital programme while the level of council tax proposed will mean it continues to be the lowest in West Sussex and in the lowest 25% of all councils nationally.

The Council plans to continue to deliver savings and income generation through a combination of measures including; service reviews, improved procurement, income generation, and other efficiency measures. While the immediate measures focus on 2019/20, ideas have been extended into 2020/21. These measures include looking for new sources of income and reviewing

the workforce.

It was recommended to full Council that the level of Council Tax for 2019/20 is increased by £3.93 a year from £145.60 to £149.53 for an average (Band D) rated property.

The Cabinet agreed a capital investment programme that will include a broad range of initiatives ranging from: Completion of the multimillion pound redevelopment of Piries Place in Horsham Town Centre to include a new modern and largercar park Provision of moretemporary housing accommodation for homeless households Funds to support the delivery ofmore affordable rented homes Improvements to Warnham Local Nature Reserve A new skate park in Horsham

We’ve all heard that a balanced diet is important for our health – but what exactly is a balanced diet?

By Sally Gunnell OBE A balanced diet is important because our organs and tissues need proper nutrition to work effectively. Without good nutri-

tion, our body is more prone to disease, infection, fatigue, and poor performance.

It also runs the risk of developing heart disease, cancer, or a whole host of other serious issues!

An unhealthy diet can take its toll on our brain and mood, disrupt our sleep, sap our energy, and weaken our immune system – something that we need to be as strong as possible, especially over

the winter months!

I follow a balanced diet to ensure I get a range of nutrition that will benefit my whole body.

But what exactly is a balanced diet? What do we need to consume and what are the benefits of eating these foods? With so much conflicting information out there, it can be so easy to lose sight of what a balanced diet actually is!

A balanced diet is one that gives your body the nutrients it needs to function correctly. To get the proper nutrition from your diet, you should consume the correct food and consume it in the right proportions.

The majority of your daily calories should come from: Fresh fruit – these provide vitamins and minerals Fresh vegetables – another source of vitamins and minerals Whole grains such as brown rice and buckwheat – these contain more fibre and usually more vitamins and minerals than white varieties Legumes such as chickpeas and lentils – these provide a source of carbohydrate, protein, and fibre Nuts – a great source of fibre and a good alternative to snack on Lean protein – an important food to allow the body to grow and repair itself and also another great way to get vital vitamins

such as iron, zinc and B vitamins into your diet It can be much easier than you’d expect to fit these items into your diet – have a sliced banana over your whole grain cereal, use wholemeal bread for your lunch and include a side salad, snack on nuts (in moderation, as they contain high levels of fat) and/or fresh fruit, eat lean protein for dinner with plenty of fresh vegetables and a carbohydrate such as brown rice (bonus points for including a legume).

You can then and enjoy a piece of fruit with plain natural yoghurt after dinner. Then, as easy as that, you’re following a balanced diet.

It’s also important to eat the right amount of calories for your level of activity. For example, if you don’t perform a lot of exercise throughout the day, you’ll need fewer calories than someone with an active job. Men and women need different amounts of calories, as do certain groups of people such as those with specific health conditions, pregnant women etc.

Advice for workers during ‘cold snap’

Ever a champion of our reader’s rights, and with the weather looking set to turn decidedly

frosty in the coming weeks, we had a conversation with our friends at local law firm Man-

cini Legal and asked about what workers could or should do if they think they have been unfairly exposed to the cold.

Here’s what Nigel Cragg, personal injury specialist at Mancini, told us.

Working conditions should always be reasonable Temperature at work falls under Health and Safety legislation which says workers should always be ‘comfortable’. There are no hard and fast temperatures, but for manual type jobs indoors guidelines suggest somewhere between 13° and 16° centigrade. It is up to the employer to ensure a ‘reasonable’ working environment. If it’s not comfortable then workers should complain.

Being reasonable becomes even more important if you work in a cold room or need to use a walk-in freezer. In these cases the employer needs to make

provision to ensure there is no health or safety impact on staff by providing appropriate clothing and warm places to rest.

If you work outside your employer obviously has no control of the weather. However employers are still responsible for making sure cold weather has no detrimental impact on staff.

This can include supplying warm clothing, warm drinks and places to ‘warm up’.

Traffic routes and car parks are obvious possible hazards in snow or ice. Employers have a duty to keep pedestrian traffic routes safe, so far as reasonably practicable. This might not help if you fall into the previous night’s snow drift but, if areas are cleared or gritted after long term cold snaps or snowy conditions, then employers have to make reasonable efforts to do a good job and make it safe for

What happens if accidents occur Nigel Cragg points out that, perhaps not surprisingly, more accidents occur at work when it’s cold. ‘It’s important that both staff and employers recognise the fact that working in the cold makes people tired more quickly,’ he says. ‘A combination of being tired, being cold and possibly being in a wintry environment, makes people less careful and more prone to slips, trips, falls and even more serious accidents. Then if an accident does occur, the worker may have claim to compensation.’

This month our Award Winning Business expert, Janette Whitney gives advice on how to prepare for a NO DEAL Brexit Following the rejection of the draft Withdrawal Agreement and the turmoil within parliament, the possibility of a No Deal Brexit in March has increased.

Here are some key issues that businesses should be addressing.

This list is not exhaustive as new risks are likely to emerge.

1. Travel The rules for travel to most countries in Europe will change if the UK leaves the EU with no deal.

UK passport holders should check their passport to see whether it is valid for travel after 29 March 2019. You should have 6 months left on your passport from your date of arrival.

EHIC cards will no longer be valid for emergency treatment.

Please ensure that you have adequate insurance to cover your trip.

If you are hiring a car in Europe you will need to get an international driving licence.

2. Imports/exports How might the loss of access to the EU single market affect your trading?

Tariffs- Consider whether new tariffs/ taxes might apply to your business. Do any existing contracts need to be re-negotiated or varied?

Consider which party will bear any increase in tariffs or taxes.

Delays - Consider how to deal with expected customs and transport delays.

Consider whether changes to EU-based conformity assessment could cause delays to your supply chain Packaging of goods - Consider the impact on labelling, packaging and other regulatory standards (if applicable).

3. People How might your workforce and the workforces of your suppliers be affected?

Suppliers who rely on EU

workers -. Consider advising any eligible EU workers to apply for settled status .

whether you operate a business exempt from any restriction on freedom of movement.

4. Commercial contracts Consider auditing high-value contracts to determine whether they are vulnerable to the chang-

Force majeure: Some of the effects of Brexit may give rise to an event of force majeure VAT: VAT clauses in every commercial contract will require review, resulting in administrative burden and cost to businesses. If the UK leaves the EU without an agreement, there will be changes to import VAT but many of the existing VAT rules will remain in place.

FX fluctuations: If you do business in Euros consider how you might share the risk of currency fluctuations with your trading partners and/or look to hedge your exposure.

Amercana comes to The Hawth

Free places in upcoming workshop

The Capitol are offering up to 20 places for local young people to participate in a week-long workshop with Motionhouse during February half-term.

The workshop will result in an on stage performance by the students at the start of the shows in April. This will act as a curtain raiser to the Charge show and The Capitol are inviting applications from local dance students to apply.

Applicants should be boys and girls aged 12 to 18 years, who are available to take part in the workshop as well as to perform on the stage in April. The theatre wishes to ensure that dancers from across Horsham District are given the opportunity to participate, and stated that ‘help with this is crucial’. With workshop places limited, organisers are expecting it to be very popular.

The participation will be at no cost to applicants, as the Horsham Year of Culture will be covering the fees involved.

Anyone who is interested should email Hazel.fisher@horsham.gov.uk for an application form (and more details of the performance schedule and rehearsal times) as soon as possible as there is an application deadline of 2pm Wednesday 6 February.

Brangwyn in Horsham

Just before the outbreak of First World War, Frank Brangwyn, one of the leading up and coming artists of the day, came to Horsham; Christ’s Hospital, to be precise, and started work on a masterpiece.

Following on from the mediaeval tradition, he was commissioned to paint murals to adorn the newly built school chapel walls. Brangwyn in Horsham, the stunning new temporary exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, marks his arrival in the town by showcasing three of the cartoons he created for the Chapel and puts them into context with other work by this renowned artist.

The exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is part of the District’s Year of Culture. It will show for the first time, outside the School, three stunning drawings of the designs for the Chapel walls. It was from these drawings (or cartoons as they are known), and others held by the School, that Brangwyn transferred the images on to the walls to create highly colourful masterpieces. The exhibition, using drawings lent by Christ’s Hospital Museum, will also give other examples of his mural work, including drawings produced for the Rockefeller Centre in New York some 20 years later in 1933-4.

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery will also display two recently acquired cartoon drawings for designs commissioned by the House of Lords in 1924. British Empire Panels were designed to mark the end of World War One and were considered a prestigious commission to adorn The House of Lords.

Frank Brangwyn had, by then, been elected a Royal Academician in 1919 and held the post of an Official War Artist. Horsham Museum has two of the preparatory drawings, which are full of vigour and drama. Unfortunately, the House of Lords decided the murals were not right for them, but Swansea, who were then building a new Guildhall, took the murals, where they are today seen as one of the art treasures of Wales.

Along with various designs for murals, Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to also be able to display a selection of ceramics designed by Sir Frank Brangwyn, lent by family descendent David Brangwyn. These will complement paintings and etchings produced by the prolific artist to create an interesting, colourful and unusual exhibition on one of the giants of 20th century art in Britain.

ideal introduction in to the work of Sir Frank Brangwyn RA, an artist who created an outstanding work of art in Horsham and one that is rightly being celebrated in the Year of Culture. The exhibition also gives a taste of what can be seen in the major exhibition on Brangwyn at Christ’s Hospital Museum, from 23 April, where seven of the magnificent cartoons will be on display as well as the murals themselves in the Chapel.

February half term workshop The Greatest Week!

seniors sessions, for ages 12-18 years.

A true work of art: BBH new homes development

Striking sculptures have been installed at a new housing development in Broadbridge Heath.

The eye-catching figures at Bellway’s Solomon’s Seal development, created by sculptor

Walter Bailey from sustainably grown local oak, have been inspired by the seeds of the purple foxglove, which is native to the local area.

Daniel Williamson, Head of Sales for Bellway South London,

said: “We are thrilled that these exciting works of art by Walter Bailey have been installed at Solomon’s Seal.

“These sculptures have been inspired by foxgloves, which are very common in the surround-

ing countryside, so are highly appropriate and symbolise the natural beauty of this lovely part of West Sussex.”

The Brighton-based artist based his designs on an image of a foxglove seed viewed under a microscope as part of research into plants in the Broadbridge Heath area.

As well as providing a striking focal point for the development, the sculptures also provide habitats for insects such as solitary bees.

Walter said: “The seed is nothing less than extraordinary, the surface being covered with delicate pockets, enabling the wind to broadcast the seed for some distance from the plant’s location.

“With these sculptures, I hope to draw attention to the incredible hidden forms of the many plants that we encounter in everyday life. I am seeking to encourage a closer look at the commonwealth of familiar, everyday local flora.”

Horsham second after beating close rival

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham notched up their fourth straight win – an important one, leading throughout against fellow promotion chasing Charlton Park with six tries apiece – not for the first time in this campaign, former skipper Tom Johnson’s golden boot kicking them to victory.

Charlton Park pressed Horsham with continuous possession from the off, but Horsham

kept them out, gradually working their way into the game, until, mid way through the half Declan Nwachukwu embarked on a trademark run, leaving defenders in his wake to give Horsham a five point advantage, unusually without conversion addition.

Horsham promptly mounted another attack, Dan Cass powering over from close range, Johnson kicking the extras before Joe Wilde latched onto an intercept to run from the half way line for Horsham’s third try and a 19 nil lead courtesy of another accurate kick. But, this served to activate the hosts, who got over the line themselves – unconverted – to take the score to 5-19 at the break.

Both sides resumed in unforgiving mode, but Horsham soon drew blood again, Vince Everitt fuelling Johnson, who then supplied Nwachukwu to cut down the line for his second thrusting try, Johnson’s kick boosting the score to 26-5. Charlton Park, though, retaliated, taking advantage of unsuccessful tackles to curtail the deficit to 26-19 with two maximised tries in quick succession. Unfazed, Horsham responded in the best possible way, Wilde scoring between the posts after Johnson had thwarted a home foray. With just over an hour on the clock, the kick gave Horsham a 14 point advantage. Nwachukwu was then red carded for an unintentionally dangerous tackle, unsettling Horsham and seized upon

by Charlton, who promptly put two tries on the board, restricting Horsham’s lead to just four points. However, Everitt launched an incursion, going on to notch up victory with Horsham’s sixth try – duly converted. The hosts did get over again, but their errant kick highlighted the crucial difference between the sides on the day.

Post match, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “The tense first quarter showed no signs of the drama that was to follow and that 12 tries would be shared between two very committed sides.

Ultimately a great game of rugby, although we should have killed it off more effectively when leading 19-33 with 20 to play. Instead we started making silly errors and gifted possession to a side whose big ball carriers are a handful and need no second invitation to play. This put pressure on our defence, ultimately making the game closer than it needed to be.

In attack we were clinical, even managing to leave a couple of easy tries out there! There are many candidates for Man of the Match, but it goes to Tom Johnson for his excellent kicking and physical presence in attack and defence.”

Horsham revert to cup action on Saturday – at Old Colfeians – by whom they were narrowly beaten in the league earlier this season.

Meanwhile, Horsham are second on level points with Charlton Park, Beckenham remaining leaders by a healthy margin.

Heath defy leaders only to be sunk by late killer goal Saturday January 26 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 2 Chichester City Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath scored first and right to the end of the game looked likely to share the points and extend their unbeaten run to six matches, only to be undone at the death.

Through December and January Heath had maintained four consecutive clean sheets – and they had held league leaders Chichester City to a nil-nil draw in the corresponding away fixture earlier in the season.

And, as Chichester had lost to Haywards Heath in their mid week RUR Cup Semi Final, a close game was in prospect last Saturday – and so it transpired. Much changed following their cup defeat, Chichester created the first chance, but Dave Herbert, returning from a three game suspension, fired over. Martyn Flack combined to test the visitors’ defence. Then, debutant Chichester keeper Ryan Young had to punch away the first of Ryan Brackpool’s troublesome long throws. But Heath did not have long to wait for a goal, and after Josh Clack’s shot had sailed

harmlessly over, Heath broke away for George Cousins to give the Bears the lead with an impressive finish to his fourth goal in six games. Gicu Iordache, returning from a three game suspension, had the possibility of an equaliser, but was thwarted

by Kieron Thorp’s save, before the Heath keeper also cleared the resultant corner. Thorp then latched onto Chichester’s leading scorer Scott Jones’ shot.

Chances came and went at either end ahead of Young restricting Heath’s lead to 1-0 at the break.

Play resumed with a Chichester substitution as they sought to draw level and, rejuvenated, Clack and Jones plagued the home defence. Heath stayed in front until the 68th minute, when Jones did manage to get past Thorp. Heath responded positively but the danger they posed was somehow averted before Iordache and Jones both went close at the start of incessant Chichester pressure, that saw Iordache and Jones instigating further menace, along with Clack. Yet, Heath kept them at bay - until just before the end when Clack unleashed an unstoppable header to snatch all three points for Chichester, much to Heath’s irritation.

On Saturday, sixth-placed Heath visit The Haven Centre in Hophurst Lane to take on mid table Crawley Down Gatwick.

Slinfold Ladies Shortlisted for England Golf Award

Slinfold Golf & Country Club is the only Club from Sussex to make the shortlist of finalists for the national, England Golf Awards 2019.

Earlier this month, England Golf named the finalists for eight of the nine awards up for grabs. In showcasing our achievements in creating sustainable systems that will benefit members into the future, Slinfold Ladies have been shortlisted for the Innovation of the Year Award. The winners will be revealed at the awards dinner in London on 21 March.

Slinfold Ladies have also nominated long-serving member, Donna Davies, for the ninth award, the Lifetime Service Award, but England Golf is keeping its powder dry on who is in the running for that award until the night itself.

Commenting on being shortlisted, Lady Captain, Jenny Wise, said: “Last year’s Lady Captain, Jeanne

Horsham scuppered by two late goals Saturday January 26 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Wycombe Men’s 1st XI 4 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Against third-placed Wycombe at the England Hockey HQ - Bisham Abbey’s National Sports Centre Training Camp - Horsham took an early lead, but their visit to Berkshire ended in further frustration with two late goals denying them even a point.

Starting well again, Horsham found the net after the ever challenging Joey Humphreys was fouled in the D with the home keeper pushing out the resultant short corner and, after a defender’s leg had blocked the rebound shot, Sean Pearcy scored with a penalty flick.

Horsham continued in control, until Freddie Campbell was subjected to a 10 minute yellow card sanction, the long range decision appearing generous to the hosts, who maximised the short corner to equalise on the stroke of half time.

Re-starting, Horsham were soon reduced to nine men, Wycombe taking full advantage of another card to take the lead with a field goal. Horsham, though, once back with a full complement on the pitch regained superiority and drew level when Pearcy converted a short corner with his 14th goal of the campaign. With both sides looking for a decider, parity was maintained, but with five minutes remaining a disputed short corner was put in by Wycombe and, with Horsham deflated, the hosts scored again in the dying moments, the fi-

nal scoreline not being an accurate reflection of a game dominated by incessant stoppages and the issue of a dozen or more cards, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “Our new match day coach Brian Humphreys has got Horsham playing their best hockey of the season and we were worth at least a point, so it was disappointing to come away empty handed after we fell at the final hurdle.

Amazingly, there were times when both teams were down to nine players, the difference being that Wycombe scored when we were down, but we didn’t score when they were – when a goal would have put us in front.”

On Saturday, Horsham return to Christ’s Hospital for an 11.30 push back against ninth in the table Staines, looking to avenge their 7-1 drubbing by the Middlesex side in October. Horsham are 10th, above Slough and Woking, but the major changes in the structure of league hockey planned for this summer may result in only one team being relegated, easing Horsham’s position.

Also on Saturday, Horsham Ladies return from their prolonged Christmas and New Year break to take on Cambridge City at Broadbridge Heath, starting at 2pm. At this halfway point of the season Horsham Ladies are sixth and Cambridge fourth, the sides having drawn 2-2 when they met in East Anglia earlier in the season.

Hampstead & Westminster are the current leaders with Wimbledon in second spot, while Southgate and Ipswich occupy the two lowest berths.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham bounced back from the previous weekend’s defeat with a determined win against a physical Ramsgate side that did the double over the Hornets last season.

The three points earned put Horsham – now fourth with 41 points - back in play off contention, just one point behind Ashford

Town and two shy of current runner up Hastings United, with runaway leaders Cray Wanderers on 55. Early in the Ramsgate clash at Culver Road, Charlie Harris’ free kick went wide after the referee had issued the first of his seven yellow cards – against the visitor’s Crimmen. Ramsgate responded with an unfulfilled foray, before Horsham created a trio of opportunities – loanee Kieran Lavery being unable to make contact with Harris’ cross, and then playing the ball into visiting keeper Luke Watkins grasp, ahead of Watkins thwart-

ing Lee Harding’s attempt to turn in Rob O’Toole’s supply. Ramsgate unleashed an optimistic long range shot, but the half ended in goalless frustration for Horsham when Lavery was muscled off the ball in the area by Saunders only for a goal kick to result.

In the second half Ramsgate were even more robust, with Saunders acquiring an early yellow for an over-enthusiastic tackle on Jack Brivio. Harris was then side-lined by another brutal challenge before Horsham keeper Josh Pelling was at his best to keep Ramsgate at bay.

A Horsham corner came and went and Brivio was denied by Watkins, Ramsgate, though, were also in contention with first a header testing the Hornets’ defence and then a shot being safely gathered

by Pelling. Chris Smith replaced Lavery but still Horsham avoided the net – until, in the 76th minute, Smith squared the ball to O’Toole for him to slot in at close range.

Smith was then crudely floored inside the box, but again play was waved on. Undaunted, Horsham continued to push, but Tyrell Richardson-Brown was unable to

convert Harvey Sparks’ feed. Passions subsequently erupted with players jostling in a stand off and supporters engaging in an off field fracas. Horsham’s Lewis Hyde was sent off, soon to be joined by Ramsgate’s Saunders, and after further on field strife, culminating in an unsuccessful Ramsgate free kick, the game ended in Horsham’s favour, courtesy of the late single goal. On Saturday Horsham travel to 13th-placed East Grinstead, whom they beat 3-0 at Lancing in September.

Horsham YMCA lead 3-0 but then stumble to a draw Saturday January 26 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3 3 Saltdean United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA totally dominated the first half, but after running Saltdean ragged, their mystifyingly disappointing home form returned to haunt them and in the end they were somewhat relieved to finish with a draw.

The second half was mired in controversy with the referee losing control of the game. The first half, though, saw YM playing probably their best passing football of the season, applying pressure right from the off. Dan Evans fired in a close range shot from an early corner before the ball was almost skewed in from the free kick resulting from a foul on Jack Hartley. A goal mouth melee brought an unrewarded appeal for a YM penalty, but a goal swiftly followed when Oli Gill converted a corner in the 15th minute. Tony Nwachukwu burst through on the right, but the cross was just out of Tony Garrod’s reach, but, Guy Harding soon doubled YM’s lead

when he headed in a corner, leaving distraught Saltdean keeper Nathan Stroomberg lying almost inconsolable in his goal. But, Saltdean responded with a rare attack, their long range strike being pushed off for a corner by Aaron Jeal at full stretch. And, Jeal had to bat away another speculative punt, but not until YM had created further chances, from a corner and open play. Ash Dugdale then got through the defence, but blazed over, ahead of Stroomberg racing almost to the half way line to clear. However, unstoppable YM then scored again, Garrod swivelling to plant a sweet strike into the net just before the break.

Yet, there was just time for Saltdean’s Curtis Gayler to latch onto a failed clearance to reduce the deficit, the teams turning round with YM leading 3-1.

On the resumption Saltdean had a corner and then clawed back another goal, Brotherton scoring from the spot, YM’s protestations at the handball decision being waved aside. A YM attack came to nought before Garrod’s shot induced a corner and Hartley fired wide. Saltdean were also off target, but they had now come much more into the game, and equalised in the 69th minute. YM claimed

that Baillie Rogers was five yards offside, but the referee, under assessment, was adamant that the goal should stand. Frustration spawned ugly scenes, culminating with Peter Buckland being ordered from the dug out. With the players’ confidence in officials’ decisions lost, matters overheated with Garrod and Gill early recipients of a series of yellow cards, despite which YM kept pushing, with Nwachukwu squirting wide from close quarters and Alex Barbary shooting to the keeper.

Saltdean corkscrewed errantly and then, after considerable consultation, had demands for a second penalty rejected. Amid frantic end to end attacks, further yellow cards were given, including for Stroomberg’s time wasting, before Brotherton’s crude tackle saw him get a straight red. After their outstanding showing in the first half the draw seemed almost like a defeat for YM - in the last five home games they have garnered just two points from a possible15, and although still third they are now 10 points behind Chichester and eight adrift of Newhaven, who have a game in hand. Hoping for a re-booting win on Saturday, YM make the short trip to relegation threatened Loxwood.
