Owning your own home could be more affordable than you think Do you often dream about owning your own home? If so, shared ownership could be the answer. Winterton Square is a brand-new development by Weald Living located at the heart of Horsham. Just moments away from Horsham train station, this stylish oasis is in close proximity to the wide range of shops, restaurants and amenities the town centre has to offer. Purchasing a home at Winterton Square could be more affordable than you think through the option of shared ownership, which enables you to buy a share of the value of the property and pay affordable rent on the remaining share. Whether you’re looking for a stepping stone onto the property ladder or an affordable way of owning your own home should your family circumstances have changed, shares at Winterton Square start from just 25%. If your financial circumstance improves over time, you have the option of increasing your share to up to 100% of the property value. Buying a home through shared ownership offers many benefits, including saving money. Your monthly mortgage and rent payments can often work out cheaper than buying outright, and usually less than private renting. You will also part own

your home rather than paying rent with no return. Household income requirements to buy a shared ownership property will vary from development to development. However, the general guidelines state that you must have a combined household income of less than £80,000 per year outside of London to meet the eligibility criteria. Thoughtful design combines with modern styling at Winterton Square. Offering a range of two-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom chalet bungalows, this stunning collection of new build homes are available to purchase on a shared ownership basis. Spacious light-filled living areas are complimented by stylish fully fitted kitchen and bathrooms, while practical storage and gas central heating creates a home that is energy efficient and easy to live in. The Mews, our range of two-bedroom chalet bungalows, benefit from private gardens, while apartments feature generous balconies or patios, with views over the landscaped central grounds. Each property is provided with an allocated parking space, some of which also include electric car charging facilities. When it comes to convenience,

Loan shark event helps Horsham victims bite back

News

An initiative to help victims of loan sharks bite back will be launched in Horsham later this month. Local, independent charity Age UK Horsham District has teamed up with the England Illegal Money Lending Team (IMLT) to organise a community event to raise awareness of the dangers of loan sharks. The event, aimed at older residents and carers, will take place at Age UK Horsham District, Lavinia House, Dukes Square, Horsham, RH12 1GZ on Tuesday 12 February between 1pm and 4pm. Residents are being invited to come along and meet Glenda the Lenda, the national antiloan shark mascot while getting a range of help, support and advice. The campaign has come about as partners are concerned that vulnerable members of the community are at risk of falling victim to a loan shark. Sonia Mangan, Chief Executive Officer for Age UK Horsham District, said: “We are pleased to have been awarded proceeds of crime funding to deliver an information event and raise awareness of loan sharks in our community. The Stop Loan Sharks team will be joining us on the day to speak to residents about illegal money lending and how to get help if affected.” The event will focus on: What a loan shark is, How to spot signs that someone is using a loan shark, and, importantly, What to do if you or someone

Bus-loads of sugar removed from county’s school dinners

School dinners across West Sussex now contain 2.5kg less sugar per child a year than they did just four years ago – and the proof is not just in the pudding. The latest menu for children to choose from now includes just 5g of sugar a day on average, down 73% on meals served up in 2014 when the average school dinner contained 18.5g of sugar. West Sussex County Council’s Catering Services Team has been working closely with Public Health specialists since the end of 2014 in a targeted effort to reduce the amount of sugar in primary school meals. The West Sussex Sugar Reduction Programme has been run at

no extra cost in collaboration with Chartwells, the county council’s main primary school meals provider. In total, the amount of sugar that has been removed from meals over a school year is the equivalent weight of more than five double decker buses. But crucially, the toughest critics - a team of pupil taste testers have given the healthier meals the thumbs up, proving that there’s no need to compromise on taste and meal enjoyment when shelving the sugar. Around 30,000 meals a day are served up in schools right across the county to children from Reception age up to Year 6. This was seen to be a great opportunity to make some small changes to meals that could yield large health gains for West Sussex children. Menus were re-engineered, new recipes were developed, and portion sizes were revised, allowing changes to be made without compromising on food choices, and crucially maintaining the requirements of the School Food Plan Standards. The reduction comes as Public Health England release startling new figures showing that children across the country are eating twice as much sugar as they should be. West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, Amanda Jupp, said: “We all know that eating too much sugar can lead to weight gain and related health and dental problems. Ensuring our school dinners are low in sugar is an easy way to make sure our children are getting the right balance they need. For some children, their school dinner is their main meal of the day, so it is vital that it is nutritious. “I am very proud that we have been able to go the extra mile to ensure our school meals remain nourishing, without compromising on taste.”

Farlington is delighted to be ranked highly in the Government’s school performance table for A Levels in England, which was published last month. The table ranks schools and colleges by their progress score. Farlington was the 16th best independent school and the 3rd best all-girls independent school in England. In West Sussex, it was the 2nd highest ranked school. The value-added or progress score assesses how much progress students who studied A Levels at a school or college made between the

end of key stage 4 (GCSEs) and the end of their A Level studies, compared to similar students across England. Louise Higson, Farlington Headmistress, commented: “We are delighted to be ranked so highly. It is a demonstration of the hard work and commitment of our students. “My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers; their passion and commitment are key in providing the excellent teaching and support which enables the girls to achieve their potential and reach the universities of their choice.”

Council appoint Legal & General for North Horsham development

martin read

Reporter

In a major strategic announcement Horsham District Council have appointed Legal & General Capital (LGC) to carry forward the implementation of the highly controversial North Horsham plan. Destined to include almost

3,000 homes, a business park, schools and community sports facilities, it has been suggested that some local organisations might move there to free up the more centrally sited land that they currently occupy. The once sacrosanct gap between Horsham and Crawley, designed to preserve the distinct characters of the two towns, has been steadily eroded by developments, most recently by the Kilnwood Vale housing estate and, in June 2014

local residents protested against the North Horsham proposals both on the affected fields near Wimland Road and at a wellattended rally in Horsham Park. The development will butt onto Rusper Village and was described by protestors as “environmentally disastrous in a tranquil beautiful area, sacrificing 800 acres of virgin countryside”, but outline planning permission was granted to Liberty Property Trust in May 2017 by 26 votes to 16.

Insurance giant Legal & General specialise in life, pensions and ISA products, with LGC being their prinicipal investment arm with the expressed aim of being an ambitious leader in UK housing and supporter of UK’s infrastructure. LGC has created its own house builder, with quick and easy factory produced, quality checked modular housing. And, the company has recently acquired CALA Homes (built to rent) and in addition to an industrial estate in Littlehampton, and a development in Eastbourne, other projects include schemes in Cardiff, Oxford and the largest wind farm in the world – Hornsea, off the north east coast. LGC say: “This strategic extension of Horsham will represent a blueprint that we can roll out across the UK, working in close partnership with local councils and the public sector to create places where people can work, live and prosper. Our purpose is to revolutionise the home building industry by delivering a new supply solution.” Ray Dawe, Leader of Horsham District Council, commented: “It is excellent news for Horsham that Legal & General, a major British company, has taken over the North Horsham development at a time when there is considerable

national political and economic uncertainty – showing huge confidence in our district and we very much look forward to working with them.” At the time of the planning consent, the North Horsham scheme, bordered by Langhurst Wood Road in the west to Wimland Road in the east, hemmed in to the south by the A264 and ancient woodland to the north, was dubbed: “Unpopular but necessary”. At the time the Council said that they are obliged by law to produce a properly organised plan and that, in addition to providing affordable housing and jobs, the North Horsham proposals would protect the community against future development, and that, without the plan, there is a risk of ad hoc speculative development being approved on appeal. With the major developments at Broadbridge Heath and Southwater and plans for the former Novartis site and ideas for the fields near the Boars Head pub, among other housing projects, Horsham, placed conveniently near to Gatwick Airport, London and the coast has clearly been identified as a prime location for development, making it one of the fastest growing areas of the country.

Pupils lunch with Olympic Eventing Rider

Pupils at Christ’s Hospital School had a special guest for lunch on Monday 28th January; the well-known British Olympic eventing rider, Gemma Tattersall, who is from Horsham, visited the School and spent time with a group of pupils, who

are fans. Gemma Tattersall is ranked 3rd internationally, regularly being placed in the top ten at Badminton and Burghley 4* Horse Trials. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro where she finished 41st in the

Don’t forget to catch this Friday

individual and 5th in the team competition. Gemma now has her sights on the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. The pupils who were lucky enough to meet Gemma are themselves riding enthusiasts and members of the School’s riding club. “Having watched Gemma both on television and at competitions for many years now, it was truly an honour to be able to talk with her and hear stories from some of the most prestigious events, such as the Olympics and the World Equestrian Games, where team GB won gold in eventing last year,” said Madeline, age 17, from Pulborough, “It’s not every day you are able to get an insight into the behind-the-scenes world of top athletes such as Gemma; from flying a team of horses half way around the world, to hearing about the luxurious stables and facilities at the Rio Olympics.” Several members of Gemma’s family are Old Blues – former pupils of Christ’s Hospital – so it was particularly good to welcome her as a guest to the School.

Primary school children met last week at Horsham train station to admire the colourful posters they designed for Horsham District Year of Culture 2019. The pupils, from Kingslea and Wisborough Green Primary Schools, created the posters in conjunction with the art department at Christ’s Hospital School;

The Primary students spent a day designing the posters based on significant landmarks in and around Horsham as well as

Horsham District Council Chairman, Cllr Peter Burgess, and Vice Chairman, Cllr Kate Rowbottom, opened the Sussex Elder Recovery Service on Monday 4 February at their inaugural meeting. The service supports people over the age of 55 who have suffered some form of harm, either physical, mental, financial or otherwise, and need assistance to recover from their trauma. Victims are assessed and then

Funds needed for Be Inspired by Nature with endangered Falcon RSPB Creative Breaks

A popular venue in Horsham is aiming to help a breed of falcon regain its numbers after its population was severely affected due to it being hunted and killed. Huxleys Birds Of Prey Centre will be raising funds for “Project Lugger” with a falcon only day on Saturday 23rd February.

Project Lugger is a small non profit organisation, set up to try and help save the, in danger Lugger Falcon. The aim of the project is to create a small breeding programm with a carefully selected and unrelated gene pool. Lugger Falcons will then be distributed to other breeding set ups and to those involved in public displays with the intention of widening the understanding of both the species itself and its plight. With all admission fees on the day going towards the project it is a great way to experience one of the best places in Horsham whilst also helping it raise money. Huxleys isn’t just about Falcons though and if you or any Family member has a soft spot for our winged friends then it is worth a visit at any stage of the year. Not only can you view them all but you can also enjoy experience days where you fully immerse yourself in the task of working alongside the professionals as you spend the day with Hawks or Owls in their natural habitat. Bird Box building at Copsale Hall The sun shone for the annual bird box building at Copsale Hall on Sunday 23 Jan. Local timber merchants, Wenban Smith, once again supported the event by donating the wood which was then made up into kits. Participants brought along their own hammers and nailed together some very sturdy nesting boxes. After working up an appetite, many enjoyed a ‘bacon butty’ and a hot drink before going home to hang

their box up in their garden. The Hall has been in Copsale for over 100 years. There are plans to improve the facilities on offer whilst maintaining the unique character of this old building. Diet ultimately determines results jason squires

0203 432 4372

So tell me, how goes your fitness goals? I hope that you’re still on track? It’s frightening to think we’re now already 25% of the way through February. Now even closer to Spring, just 3 short weeks away. So it’s vital now that you don’t give up on your goals to be in better shape this year. May I suggest, your goal shouldn’t be for aesthetic reasons only but for the betterment of your overall health. The best way to stay healthy, even more than exercise, would be to eat whole foods only. Your diet ultimately determines results. Now I don’t like the word diet, it has the word “die” in it! The truth is, if you’re following a diet based solely on calorie restrictions, then you’re causing the death of your metabolism. Stop that, you need a good metabolism. You can learn more about Metabolism, Hormones, Nutrition etc... at our blog. (You can find our blog via the homepage at: www.HealthMentors.co.uk.) Here you can also download our free exercise and nutrition program that will help you preserve your metabolism by eating correctly for your body type and your goal.

The truth is, there is no one diet for everyone. The only one rule is “eat only whole foods and do not eat any processed foods”! Following on from eating whole, you must monitor your macros and micro nutrient intake. Plus watch the time of day you eat, as well as how often you are eating. Eating raises insulin levels and insulin is known as the fat hormone. If you want to learn more about macros and micro nutrients then again go download our program at: www. HealthMentors.co.uk. Of course, eating by itself is unlikely to produce the body you want. For that you need to combine the correct exercise program! If you’re unsure of your body type (and most people are) and the best way to eat and train correctly for that body type, please speak to an expert and go on one of their programs or bootcamps. In the Horsham District, you’ve so many choices. As mentioned in my last article, there are multiple gyms, outdoor fitness classes, crossfit, yoga classes etc... (plus my own local courses... call 0203 432 4372 and arrange a free consultation with me at my Horsham office located just opposite the railway station) one of which will work for you. All nutrition and fitness programs need you to give them the correct timeframes and commitment levels. If you can not truly commit, then quite honestly

do not start. If it’s just starting nerves holding you back, then a good trainer will hold your hand and motivate you. Another option you might want to consider as a good starting point is going on an intensive bootcamp and/ or retreat. Bootcamps/Retreats combine holiday fun with training and education. You get to learn everything over an intense period of time that really cements good habits. I run a number retreats in The Vosges region of France (towards the German / Swiss border). Here are some really good reasons to think about attending a wellbeing bootcamp - mine preferably :) 1. They Lower Your Stress Levels: The best thing you can do to de-stress is to turn

off all your digital devices. Then replace with proactive activities, such as, walking, yoga, meditation, exercise, nutrition, photography, cycling, art, books and swimming to name but a few. 2. Banish Your Comfort Zones: Amazing things happen when you step out of your comfort zone. You meet new people. You receive clarity of thought. You gain better movement. All will help restore energy levels as your body returns to correct movement, eating and sleep patterns. 3. Your Spirits Are Lifted: As you learn something new and gain new friendships. It’s not unusual for people go on retreats by themselves and then become part of a new tribe with

a real sense of camaraderie . You really feel lifted. 4. You Physically See Changes: As you get used to your new exercise regime and way of eating (paleo, ketogenic, zone, plant-based depending on your body type) you’ll start feeling so much more lively and healthier... Any negativity will lessen, replaced with positivity and your body will thank you for it. You now have the momentum and ammunition needed to continue on with a healthier, more positive you. Good luck on your program, keep going and remember you can learn more about Nutrition and Exercise at: www.HealthMentors.co.uk or www.Facebook. com/HealthMentors

A cut above: Brothers continue their Father’s legacy russ bedford For 22 years brothers Owen and Jim have been leading the way when it comes to male haircutting in Horsham. Inspired by their Father Frank, to follow on his legacy Mancut has become, for many, the first place to choose when considering which barbers to visit. Frank had racked up many years of experience and passed that on to his Sons, Jim initially showing an interest before Owen later followed suit. It wasn’t always going to be that way, Jim mentioning, “Dad didn’t want us to become barbers, he thought we would be better doing something else like rocket science but that never took off!” After years of learning the trade around various other venues the trio took the leap and started their own barber shop and hit the ground running, “I spent a year in Australia and then when I got back we thought it was time to open one ourselves.” Says Owen. Mentored by their Father they found themselves getting busier and soon a loyal band of customers built up, “We’ve got an amazingly loyal clientele with a lot of them feeling more like mates as they have been coming in for up to 20 years and beyond.” says Jim. The customers also stemmed

from the strong reputation built up by Franks welcoming approach, Owen mentions that, “People that visited my Dad when he worked in Crawley followed him to Horsham and have continued to visit us after he passed away, which will be 10 years this year. Along with that we have found people making extra long journeys just to come and have a haircut with us including a Family that now lives in Dubai and some that come in despite working in Switzerland.” It is endorsements such as these that have helped maintain such a good reputation for the barbers and one that has certainly helped maintain custom when Piries Place and the surrounding areas have suffered as development work takes place. With this ongoing work in Piries Place many businesses have found revenue a little harder to come by, some have come and gone altogether whilst others have had to adjust their opening hours, “The Piries carpark issue can make things tough, the passing trade is definitely affected but the regulars still come, no matter where they have to park which we really appreciate” says Jim. This hasn’t distracted the guys from strengthening though, recruiting a great new team of barbers to work alongside them, Mancut shows no sign of faltering and with the new recruits continually developing, both Owen and Jim knew they could finally allow themselves to change their own working patterns and get a bit

more of a work-life balance, “One of the two of us is here everyday and we are both here Saturdays but we want the new guys to have the chance to develop and progress so we are a bit more part-time now. It gives us a chance to spend a bit more time with our Families and enjoy some of the out of work interests that we weren’t always able to enjoy.” With the Brothers now feeling like veterans of the trade it’s interesting to know that they also at times feel like Pupils too, “The guys working with us are much younger than us and are excellent at mastering the newer styles, we learn from them sometimes, Aaron has been here for years, Marius almost a year and Brad since last July. It is a really good mix of experience between us all though and it means we can all cover a range of customer ages. The youngest we have had is 3 months and we had one Gentleman that was 97 and super spritely!” What about the future beyond Mancut though? “We aren’t going anywhere yet and if the Children are interested in taking the reins one day it may be an option, unless they become rocket scientists!” That would certainly be some story, the two young Men that came over from Dublin with their Father, mastered a trade and then mentored their kids to continue the legacy.

Dan Lodge, Vice Principal (Quality and Curriculum), has helped cement the collaborative relationship. He explained: “It’s been a pleasure working with our friends at Rikkyo School over the last few years. Many of our staff and students are interested in Japanese language and culture and to have a top Japanese independent school so close is a fantastic opportunity. “We have learnt a lot from one another through the various visits, activities and discussions that have already been organised and this signing of a commitment to future

collaboration gives us a great opportunity to take that joint work further in the future.” Tadahiro Sato, Headmaster at Rikkyo School, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for our students to develop close, cultural ties with Collyer’s students, and we look forward to the continuing exchange of our two cultures over the coming years. “Through this collaboration, our students have been given the opportunity to experience a communicative teaching approach which is key to the British educational system. This can only serve to enrich and enhance the educational experience of our students, for which we would like to thank the students and staff at Collyer’s.” Recent activities have included teachers from Rikkyo spending time in Collyer’s Humanities faculty watching lessons and discussing teaching with staff, Rikkyo and Collyer’s students spending time on both campuses learning about the different approaches to study and a sporting event including football, table tennis and badminton competitions. Sally Bromley was delighted: “Staff and students at Collyer’s are looking forward to working with our colleagues and friends at Rikkyo School more closely over the coming years.”

February Barnstormers Comedy line-up at the Capitol Horsham

It’s February, it’s cold, and there’s a whole host of stuff going-on in the world from which a temporary reprieve might be in order... that’s where Barnstormers Comedy steps-in. Here, more particularly during the colder months, to warm the proceedings through and through, divert our attentions awhile, and provide a good ol’ serotonin boost when its needed most. As ever, resident host Kevin Precious, will be on hand to oversee the proceedings. This month’s trio of mirth-making headliners includes: articulate and insightful Canadian, Dana Alexander, ‘Social smarts and eloquence evident in her writing, and an engaging likeability on stage’ - Chortle; talented impressionist Luke Kempner, ‘Tour-deforce’ - The Telegraph; and one great act as yet to be named. Dana Alexander One of Canada’s most outspoken and hilarious women has packed her bags and is now in the UK. The only black female comedian on the circuit in Canada,

Dana’s comedic style is both refreshing and irreverent, drawing her material from her diverse lifestyle, her gay friends and her crazy Jamaican family. This will be a lady not to be missed. Originally from Edmonton, Dana began her comedy career at the tender age of 18 and quickly became a regular fixture in Canadian Comedy Clubs, universities and festivals. She was voted in the “Best Discoveries” by Toronto’s renowned Now Magazine in 2006 and has since been included in their “Best Of” issues three years in a row, easily making her one of Canada’s hottest emerging young comedians. Her Canadian TV credits include Halifax Comedy Festival (CBC), Video on Trial (Much Music), women’s only network The Slice Network and The Comedy Channel (XM Satellite Radio) and this past year her national half hour comedy special was aired on CTV. Luke Kempner An exceptionally talented comedian, impressionist, actor and singer, Luke garnered global attention in 2012 with his hit viral

video Downstairs At Downton. Since then, Luke has gone from strength to strength, taking his one man show The Only Way Is Downton (described by the Daily Telegraph as a ‘remarkable tour de force’) to theatres and festivals across the UK, including Latitude and two years at the Edinburgh Fringe. He also took the show to Moscow, Spain, USA and Toronto. 2016 saw Luke return to the Edinburgh Fringe for a sell-out run of his new show Judi Dench Broke My Heart which he is touring the UK with this year. Alongside his live work, Luke has a burgeoning television and radio career. He created and starred in his own review show for ITV2, entitled Luke Kempner’s Impression of 2015. He starred in Tiger Aspect and BBC3 comedy Murder In Successville series one and two and three, The Tracey Ullman Show (BBC1), Episodes (BBC2), Drunk History (Comedy Central), Newzoids (ITV). He presented a special radio programme of music and impressions on Magic 104.5 and Virgin Radio, and has also been a featured guest on several programmes across BBC Radio 2. Last year Luke became a regular on BBC Radio 4’s institution The Now Show and News Jack. Summer of 2016, Luke became the resident comedian on Celebrity Big Brother’s Bit On The Side, he has filmed five series and been hailed “a blumin’ genius!” by Dawn French. Luke started his career in musical theatre, playing Marius in Les Misérables as well as taking roles in Avenue Q and South Pacific. A graduate from The Guildford School of Acting, he also plays the piano, is a puppeteer and classically trained singer.

Horsham clean up Staines Saturday February 2 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 2 Staines Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In a biting cold wind last Saturday, Horsham returned to winning ways with their fourth victory of the season – a worthy one – against Staines , who had beaten them 7-1 in October’s away fixture. Horsham took an early lead when Sean Pearcy converted a short corner, before Staines hit the post, also from a short. Then Horsham had the opportunity to double their lead when a Staines defender stopped another short corner with his leg, up stepped almost invincible drag flicker Pearcy only to be thwarted by an excellent save by the visiting keeper, post match Sean dryly observing: “I’ve only missed two flicks in my entire life! The keeper dived early and spooked me … but I got our first goal, though!” After Staines had blazed another set piece well over, Horsham were temporarily reduced to nine men by two green cards, Staines failing to maximise the opportunity, firing well wide, leaving Horsham with a 1-0 lead at the break. Horsham Player Coach Dom Male was making a welcome, rare appearance for Horsham, his experience providing more midfield control – and his half time team talk was unforgiving, uncomfortable, unbeatable, and unprintable, but it ultimately did the trick. Yet, shortly after the resumption, Staines equalised when a long range ball whistled through, picking up a lucky deflection en route. Horsham,

though, did not have long to wait to re-take the lead, Freddie Campbell breaking through and keeping going before his off load brought dividends. An opposition backhander was then well saved by Joe Elgar in the Horsham goal, ahead of his counterpart pulling off two impressive reaction saves at the other end. Joey Humphreys and Zac Chinn were combining to mount a series of attacks and, inevitably, a ball was smashed in to give Horsham a two goal advantage with the Staines keeper lying prone after only being able to push out a strong shot. A high opposition strike was then averted, successive Staines short corners being spectacularly kept out by Elgar. Another excellent Horsham save followed, but the ball was only parried and was subsequently scrambled in, but with just three minutes remaining, Horsham retained possession to secure the win that they had been threatening to deliver in recent matches. Horsham’s second half scorers were Ed Marsh and Jean Marshall, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “We had most of the play and deserved to win – our keeper played a blinder and their’s was good, too. I think we’ll win more games before the campaign is over.” Horsham Match Day Coach Brian Humphreys added: “We’ve been playing well without much rub of the green, so it was great to win today.” Horsham remain 10th, well clear of Slough and bottom club Woking, while Guildford head the table, with a six point advantage over runner up Trojans. On Saturday Horsham travel to take on 4th in the table West Hampstead , to whom they lost 2-5 at home in October.

Horsham bow out of the Intermediate Cup

Saturday February 2 – RFU Intermediate Cup Round 3 Old Colfeians 38 28 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Matches against Old Colfeians are invariably tight – earlier in the season Horsham were shaded 7-10 at home - and this game at Old Colfe’s south east London ground was no exception, ending in disappointment for the Green & Whites, missed opportunities costing them dear. A canny start, with both sides sizing each other up in the freezing conditions saw neither secure an early advantage, but, at length, the

hosts took the lead after Horsham conceded a penalty. Then, invigorated, a strong Horsham build up culminated with Jack Osgood sprinting over the line, Joe Wilde converting in the absence of Tom Johnson sidelined by sickness, putting Horsham 7-3 in front mid way through the first half. And, it almost got better immediately, but a late tackle denied Mathieu Pecharman another try, until after two mercifully unfulfilled penalties, Old Colfes notched up a try, kicked successfully giving them a narrow – 10-7 - advantage at the break. Horsham, though, responded positively on the resumption. After pressing Old Colfe’s defence, Jonny Ordidge evaded a tackler for Horsham’s second try, which, with Wilde’s conversion restored Horsham’s primacy. The Green & Whites promptly went further ahead when Aaron Linfield put Pecharman through to score in the corner, Wilde converting for Horsham to lead by 21-10. But, the deficit suddenly galvanised OCs and they rampaged on with four tries in 25 minutes. Yet, in the absence of the clinical implementation of recent weeks, it was more a case of Horsham’s missed chances than OC supremacy. And, realistically, with little time left, Horsham’s cup dream had evaporated, a late thrusting, try by Declan Nwachukwu, maximised by Wilde being of no consolation with Horsham slipping to defeat by 10 points. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “A disappointing

result – a 20 minute period in the second half saw us stand off tackles, allowing their big runners to get into the game to concede scores. This gave them confidence and got their tails up, and ultimately proved the difference. We left at least four great opportunities out there and were not clinical enough seeing dropped passes, with failures to take 2 v 1 and lack of set piece execution at vital stages. Last week we executed, but today we didn’t. The game should have been put to bed by half time and our young side will learn the importance of consistency in performance at this level. Good luck to Old Colfeians in the next round. They will certainly have a real opportunity to go on and win this cup. We shall see them again this season (at their ground on March 30), where final league aspirations are sure to be decided.” Last Saturday was a big cup weekend for Horsham with the Lions also competing, but, sadly they, too came unstuck, with a 15-36 reverse away to Burgess Hill 1st XV. Horsham Firsts are, however, still very much in contention for repeat silverware in the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup – they play Haywards Heath in the Semi Final at home on February 23rd. Meanwhile, this Saturday, looking to cement second place in the league, Horsham welcome struggling Heathfield & Waldron, whom they beat 5-63 in October’s corresponding away fixture.

Horsham Ladies shaded Very late Horsham goal secures worthy draw in close encounter Saturday February 2 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 0 1 Cambridge City Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In freezing conditions at Broadbridge Heath last Saturday, testing the resolve of even the most loyal supporters, there was little to choose between the two sides in this National League match, Horsham being undone by a superbly executed short corner just before the mid point of the second half. Although Cambridge are now third in the table Horsham held them, with that one exception, throughout the game – as they had done in October’s corresponding away fixture, when a 2-2 draw resulted. During the goal-less first half there was little sign of Horsham’s long Christmas and New Year break, interspersed as it had been with indoor and friendly matches (culminating with a win against Barnes the previous week). Short corners were traded, but neither side was able to break the deadlock up to the half time whistle. Resuming, an excellent defensive tackle by Bex Ross set off a Horsham attack, but Cambridge were giving as good as they got, their backhander going wide before Horsham goalkeeper Hannah Jackson had to

block another attempt. With action switching to the other end, Louisa Denman managed to worry the opposition keeper with a shot from a prone position, before Jackson palmed away a high ball. Horsham, playing into the low sun, were defending well, until the unstoppable Cambridge short corner was planted into the bottom right of the goal in the 19th minute. Cambridge were getting the ball forward a little quicker, but were continually thwarted by Horsham’s midfield and back line. After another top save, Hannah Jackson was forced to limp off, her mediate cruciate ligament injury necessitating extensive ongoing physiotherapy. Holly Webb took over for the last 15 minutes, during which she pulled off a very handy save. Horsham were not able to get in many field shots, but when Bella de Rocha was floored the visiting keeper had to be at her best to deny a strong Horsham strike. A late Horsham short corner then hit the cross bar, but time ran out before an equaliser could be snatched, Team Manager Jane Denman telling the District Post: “That was a good even game and it was frustrating for us to lose because the sides were so well matched.” Horsham, now 6th, travel to 7th placed St Albans on Saturday, whom they held to a 1-1 draw at home in October.

Photo by John Lines Tuesday February 5 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 1 1 Hastings Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Horsham left it desperately late to pull the fat from the fire against Hastings at Lancing on Tuesday night, and were relieved to come away with a point - especially as Hastings are just above them in the table and had beaten the Hornets 2-0 in September’s corresponding away match. But, Horsham’s current skill at salvaging matches with a late goal gave them a well-deserved draw,

again reminding supporters that they are a side determined not to concede defeat easily. The game showed attacking intent from both sides, with the defences playing impressively, providing plenty to savour on a damp night at Culver Road. And, Horsham had an early scare when they were reprieved after Hastings’ Jack Dixon hit the post when the goal was unattended. The wake up call invigorated Horsham, but George Haywards’ shot was pushed away by visiting keeper Charlie Horlock, who then turned a Tyrell Richardson-Brown header round the post. Hornet debutant Will Miles subsequently denied high-scoring Daniel Ajakalye,

and when action switched to the other end, Harvey Sparks and Rob O’Toole combined but were just unable to fashion an elusive goal. Then, although there was little to choose between the two sides, Hastings thought they had scored, but Josh Pelling palmed a header onto the bar, the first half ending goal-less. Soon after the re-start Sparks shot wide before Jody Mongoy opened Hastings’ account by threading through and shooting into the far corner. Chris Smith’s attempt to level the score posed no trouble for Horlock, who then had to back pedal fast to negate danger from Lee Harding. And, Horsham may have felt that their chance had gone when, with time fast evaporating, O’Toole was off target from close quarters. Yet, with Hastings appearing to have closed the game down for a win, after pinball action in the visitors’ penalty area, Horlock could only deflect Joe Shelley’s shot onto the crossbar and Steve Metcalf was on hand to push the ball home in the 94th minute. On Saturday Horsham visit VCD Athletic, whom they beat 4-0 at Lancing in November. Meanwhile Cray Wanderers top the table with 61 points, 13 clear of Ashford United. Hastings (46) are third and Horsham fourth with 42 points and a game in hand.

Horsham YMCA celebrate 90 years at Gorings Mead

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Horsham YMCA Football Club was founded in 1898, moving to their beloved Gorings Mead home in 1929, where they are celebrating their 90th anniversary of playing at the ground with an impressive display of posters recording the highlights of their occupation. Pre YM’s arrival the land had a

surprising history and, thanks to the good governance and industriousness of the Club they have transformed and maintained their ground as a much appreciated football and community venue. To mark YM’s 60 anniversary at Gorings Mead in 1989, historian E. Arthur Penn explained that, as early as the year 1071, William the Conqueror had given a huge tract of land, including the Manor of Chesworth, containing what is

now the YMCA Ground, to William de Braose. Ownership later passed through the Howard family to Queen Elizabeth 1st as crown land and subsequently to the Eversfield family of Denne Park, it being thought that Gorings Mead was named after a Mr Goring who grazed his horses and had a substantial house in the area. Initially Horsham YMCA played elsewhere around the town, but when part of the Denne Park Estate was acquired by the YMCA trustees, YM were delighted to have a permanent home, playing their first match on September 28th 1929, which they won – by three goals to one against Dial Post. A former fulling mill pond – used in the preparation of cloth – was at the southern end of the ground, which had become the main tip for the local council, the soil from which was used by the Club to extend the playing area and develop where the clubhouse now stands. During the war the ground

was used by the Oxford Road School team, YM resuming in 1946, in which era the ground was also used for cricket by Horsham Leather Hunters CC. Albert Browning became the post war Manager, when opponents included Roffey, Barns Green, Billingshurst, Slinfold and Henfield. The late Mick Browning, Albert’s son, first played for YM in 1954, and, after a long and distinguished football career, went on to become YM Chairman. In 1956, dressing rooms were provided on the north side of the ground and water and electricity connected. And, when YM joined the Sussex County League in the late 1950s, much hard work was put in by club members to bring the ground up to the required standard, initially the only structure at the ground had been the groundsman’s shed and players had to come to the ground already changed. The small supporters’ stand was built in 1964, and the

New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site

ground extended on the other side, the work being carried out by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers, as now regularly still happens. When more modern arrangements were required the Club secured the necessary loans and work commenced in June 1970, much being undertaken by the same volunteers, the official opening in April 1974 being a lasting tribute to their sterling efforts and which has further enabled the Club to fulfil its aim of being a Sports and Community Club as well as a Football Club. Fund raising has enabled the Club to resurface the car park and improve the social facilities by creating a spacious lounge, committee and snooker rooms and extensions to the bar, kitchen and canteen, resulting in the much-coveted facilities that the Club has developed for today’s enjoyment. On the field YM has won different divisions of the Sussex County League on four occasions and cups ten times, and are currently near the top of the Southern Combination Premier League table and in the Semi Final of the Peter Bentley Cup. Off the field, Horsham YMCA’s friendly and welcoming headquarters fulfils a prominent role in the local community, the large main hall acting as a poling station and blood donor centre, a host venue for YMCA Downslink training courses and a wide variety of local organisations, including Horsham Organ Society, Horsham Racing Pigeon Club, YMCA Snooker Club and Slimming World. The clubhouse is also a valued facility for family functions and regularly stages Comedy Nights and other well-supported entertainment. Horsham YMCA Sports and Community Club and the Football Club look forward to continuing enjoying the happy life that they have created for themselves and the community at Gorings Mead.
