Excitement builds as new Piries Place takes shape russ bedford For a while now members of the public have voiced concern when a business has either closed or relocated to a venue out of town. It is hoped with the Piries Place development that any negative feeling will pass as, what for many, was a quiet area of the town centre becomes a thriving hub of activity. As previously reported we know of Everyman bringing their fantastic cinema, we have seen repeated references to Starbucks, we posted online about the chance to enjoy some great steak at Miller & Carter, we have seen the White Brasserie Company logo adorning the signage on the hoarding and the inclusion of Premier Inn has been known for some time. It is an exciting time and business both new and established are sure to benefit from these changes to Horsham. Speaking with Maria Klockare of Everyman she says, “ Creating standout experiences is core to Everyman, with a focus on food and drink, comfy sofas to sit on and a broad selection of films, Everyman will be a great night out for everyvbody.” What of the businesses already located in Piries Place though? It has been a difficult period for many

traders but their loyalty to the town looks likely to be rewarded as the pattern of footfall is now likely to change dramatically as customers look to experience new places, many for the first time. Natasha Hamilton, owner of Ceramic shack says, “I am really looking forward to the increased footfall and the chance to meet new customers, I am really excited about what this will do for the town, it will certainly make this area more lively. I am really looking forward to the new cinema and I love coffee shops!” The Dead Parrot, always a popular place for residents far and wide, despite the fire that put it out of action towards the end of 2018 is looking to reopen its doors in line with the rest of the businesses and owner Andrew Harrod says, “ This would be as good a time as any to announce that the Parrot is dead, the severity of the smoke damage meant that the decor inside, that we have been steadily building over the past 4 or 5 years has been wiped out, this means though that we will be reopening with a new name, a fresh look and, with the square generating significant daytime trade a high level coffee service! Along with these we will continue to see Trish at Fairkind Child, Louise Sloan opticians, Lower lodge candles, the teams at Broadbridges and Timpsons. Who joins them is yet to be decided although The

Two local salon’s have fallen foul to break-ins this week. Vanity Hair Salon on Blackbridge lane was targetted in the early hours of Wednesday morning. This follows on from a very similar incident at Studio 2 Horsham in Coltsfoot drive. A safe was stolen in the Studio2 robbery and Vanity Hair owner Megan Pearson believes the same aspirations were in the criminals minds when her venue was hit, “Everything was ransacked, all cupboards and drawers open, all lights on. I think they were looking for a safe or deposit box as exactly the same happened at Studio2.” The alarm was sounded as soon

as the door was breached and a neighbour called 101 to report the disturbance however nobody attended until Megan arrived for work at 6am and notified the Police again. Forensics attended, dusted the area for fingerprints and searched for other potential signs of evidence. It is very much business as normal as Megan aims to keep her customers both new and regular happy and not allow this to disrupt bookings that people have made. You can visit the Facebook page and send them a message by clicking on Vanity Hair Salon

Marking the centenary of world renowned collector and scientist

His home South Lodge caught world attention 10 years ago when the world’s finance ministers descended to sort out the ‘crash’

of 2008, yet the former owner, Frederick DuCane Godman, is virtually unknown today outside specialist areas.

In his day, though, he corresponded with scientific greats such as Darwin, collected the finest Islamic pottery in the world, and sponsored major expeditions to discover lost civilisations. Today, he lies in Cowfold cemetery under a simple decorative cross. However, his legacy in research and collecting lives on as, last year, The British Museum opened a major permanent exhibition on Islamic culture, The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World, which features his pottery. In the hall of the Natural History Museum, there is a bronze plaque recording his generosity and a medal is awarded in his name each year for new ornithological work. It is fitting that in the Year of Culture, Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is holding a small temporary exhibition on him and his collections, a prelude to a larger exhibition in 2020. Frederick DuCane Godman – Marking the centenary of his death,

opened this week. With the help of the British Museum, Horsham Museum will be showcasing specially taken photographs of some of his outstanding Islamic pottery. These will be complementing images from an unbound copy of his privately printed book on Islamic tiles that will adorn the room. They will feature alongside paintings of the family who lived at South Lodge, the home he had built in the 1880s, and where, throughout his life, he displayed his growing collection of ceramics. The Museum is delighted to announce that a world authority on Islamic pottery, Dr Venetia Porter, of The British Museum will be speaking at The Capitol on 2 April at 2pm – 3.30pm on The Godman Collection at the British Museum, as part of the Museum’s Year of Culture events. Tickets for this special event are priced at £5 and are available from the Capitol box office on http://www.thecapitolhorsham.com/ or 01403 750220. Frederick was a man who was much respected in Victorian and Edwardian society gaining fellowships and recognition for his work from leading scientific and cultural societies. He was a Trustee of the British Museum, a Member of the Royal Institute, awarded an honorary degree by Oxford University, President of the Royal Entomological Society, Vice-President and Fellow of the Zoological Society, on the board and Fellow of the Royal Geographic and Geological Societies, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Secretary and later

President of the British Ornithological Union, Honorary member of the American Ornithological Union and a Fellow of the Linnean Society. He was a founding member of the British Ornithological Union and an avid collector of specimens as well as the art of the illustrator. On display will be prints from the John Gould bird books; he owned the original watercolours from the publications, which were dispersed around the world in 1994 following the death of his unmarried daughters who played a notable role, as Frederick did, in local society. One of Fredrick’s finest achievements was the publication of the monumental multi-volume Biologia Centrali-Americana, 63 volumes of detailed research on the natural history and archaeology of Central America. Without his financial support and ambition it would not have been completed or even published. He dedicated the work to his second wife, Alice, with whom he set out on his original expeditions to the region. There he collected some examples of pre-Columbian pottery as well as entomology and ornithology. The exhibition will run until 20 April and is a taster for a major exhibition taking place in 2020, which will involve both the Natural History Museum and the British Museum. Topping out ceremony for new temporary housing accommodation

New temporary accommodation, to help Horsham District residents facing homelessness, moved a step closer to completion last week (week commencing 11 February) with an official topping out ceremony on the site of the new homes. Horsham District Council has developed new temporary accommodation houses and flats for Horsham District residents facing homelessness, helping to avoid the use of Bed and Breakfast accommodation wherever possible. Recognising the potentially poor outcomes for local people facing homelessness and being placed in Bed and Breakfast accommodation, the council has taken the opportunity to develop eight units of accommodation in north Horsham in order to support those in greatest housing need. The self-contained flats will enable homeless households to remain in the District and continue invaluable support connections with social and family

networks. Commenting on the new temporary accommodation, Cabinet Member Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “As a council, we will always seek wherever possible to prevent homelessness in the best way we can. “I am delighted that the Council is developing these purpose built flats which provide a much more satisfactory temporary housing solution for local people in priority housing need. “Provision of this type of housing is far better for families and is more cost effective than provision of Bed and Breakfast accommodation, which is the usual alternative in these circumstances. Tim Guest, Senior Contacts Manager at PMC Construction, added: “PMC are proud to be working alongside Horsham District Council to provide low cost temporary accommodation for those who have fallen on hard times and find themselves in need of support.”

Chinese New Year Celebrations Farlington School embraced Chinese New Year celebrations, starting with an interesting assembly led by Chinese girls from Years 3 to 7. In the assembly, Cammy, Anna, Jane, Sofia, Joy, Shirley and Alvina explained the huge importance of the festival and how it is celebrated in China. Some of the girls wore beautiful Chinese dresses and the hall was decorated with traditional red and yellow lanterns and an impressive dragon. Some of the lanterns contained riddles which pupils had to solve; the winners receiving a prize in a Chinese “lucky red envelope”. The assembly ended

with the girls singing the traditional Chinese New Year Song - “gōng xǐ gong xǐ” and pupils were left with a challenge to find out the animal from the Chinese Zodiac representing their own birth year. For the day, students and staff wore red and black mufti to mark the occasion while the catering team produced a special Chinese lunch for the whole school. Prep 6 entered into the spirit of things by eating with chop sticks. In the evening, a party was held for the advent of the Year of the Pig, with boarders, day girls, parents and staff coming together to eat dumplings and celebrate.

Music professionals are a hit with students

Throughout the spring term, Collyer’s Music Practitioners students enjoyed interactive lectures from three local industry professionals to give then an insight into the workings of the music industry. James Watts, from the Brighton campus of the international contemporary music college BIMM, spoke on the range of careers available in the Music Industry and why it’s important to specialise in more than one area to maintain a successful career.

Adam Frost, from Burgess Hillbased sound and lighting company Grapevine Audio, focused on how to progress from studying at college to creating a varied and profitable career while developing practical skills and gaining further qualifications in the process. Dan Page, Head of Music at Collyer’s, said: “We are massively grateful to BIMM and Grapevine Audio for their support. “Much of the music industry is centred concerts and videos, so it was also a great honour to wel-

come Ken Carter, from successful international event management company Activate Events, to elaborate on what is involved with managing events and the skills needed to be successful. “The Music Practitioners students were extremely happy with the various creative, performance-based, business and technical areas of the industry addressed by these experienced professionals and welcomed the Q&A sessions at the end of each lecture.”

MP visits school running track funded by sugar tax

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert visited St Peter’s CE Primary School in Henfield on Friday (8 February) to see how the school is helping to improve pupils’ physical and mental health with the addition of a new running track, the ‘St Peter’s Metres’.

Last week marked Children’s Mental Health Week (4-10 February) which this year has the theme ‘Healthy: Inside and Out’. Place2Be, the charity promoting the awareness week, is encouraging schools, children and their families to think about the positive impact that physical activity

has on mental wellbeing. Mrs Denise Maurice, the school’s headteacher, welcomed Mr Herbert to the school. They were joined by pupils from the school’s council to see the newly laid 300m all-weather running track. The track is used every day by pupils and staff, and the children delighted in telling their MP how many laps they had each run on it. The running track was funded in part through the Diocese of Chichester, and also through a grant from the Healthy Pupils Capital Fund. The grant came from £100 million of revenue generated from the Soft Drinks Industry Levy, a ring-fenced fund from the tax on sugary drinks. The fund is specifically for projects to improve children’s and young people’s physical and mental health by improving their access to facilities. Mr Herbert said: “It was great to visit St Peter’s again and to see how it continues to develop. The new running track is a great addition to the school’s facilities and it was good to hear how the children benefit from using it. “I was a strong supporter of the sugar tax, and it was good to see that money being used in my constituency to promote healthy lifestyles for young people.”

10 Things You Must Do for Your Most Radiantly Gorgeous Skin That Lasts Beauty Hang Hough-The Beauty Group They say beauty fades. Well, not if we can help it! There are many things you can do to keep your skin looking youthful for longer, but not if you just sit there. It takes a bit of effort on your part to get that ageless look perfected. It’s not just one thing that you can do to make your skin look the best it’s ever looked. There are many things you should be doing to achieve that gloriously glowing skin you want to see. Here are some of the things you can do to help you always look years younger, fabulously! 1. Stick to a good skincare routine Every morning and evening, you should have a skincare routine you carry out without fail. Don’t rush it! Your skincare regime is important not just for your physical beauty but for your mind as well. Take the time to pamper yourself… you’re worth it, remember? 2. Don’t forget weekly treatments too You don’t need to exfoliate or do a mud mask every day but you should absolutely build them into your schedule each week. Put on your favourite show and kick back with a mud mask on and make it your own beautiful ritual. While you relax, it will draw out toxins from your skin. Who says you can’t get even more gorgeous watching TV? 3. Detox from within If you’ve been eating nothing but junk, your face will show it. Your skin has problems when your insides can’t handle the toxins you’re putting in. Try cleansing with a drink of warm lemon water every morning to help flush those toxins away. Also, cut down on sugar and booze for a few days and eat more fresh produce to nourish your body from the inside out. 4. Choose the right products Your best friend might love the skincare line she uses religiously, but if your skin type is different, you won’t get the same results. Look for skincare products that are formulated with natural and organic ingredients, preferably with plenty of antioxidants to help keep you looking young. Antioxidants destroy free radicals and help your skin create fresh new cells. By choosing products with quality ingredients that were formulated for your skin type, you’ll look better in a flash! 5. Don’t ever sleep with makeup on Even once can damage your skin! Make-up must come off every night, no exceptions! Stock up on make-up-removing wipes to help make short work of make-up removal to get you primed for your nightly skincare routine. 6. Eat more vitamin-rich foods Skin looking a bit dull and blah? Make sure you’re getting

enough vitamins in your diet. Be honest… did you have a salad today? Have at least one salad each day, either as a meal or on the side and get your fruit in. Choose salmon, spinach, and walnuts for more omega-3 fatty acids. Choose citrus, dark leafy greens, and bell peppers for more vitamin C. Choose almonds and squash for vitamin E. Eat more Greek yogurt for zinc; more yams and sweet potatoes for vitamin A; and more tomatoes for lycopene, one of the best antioxidants there is. If you’re still not getting enough for your healthy food quota, buy some supplements that will give you the full spectrum of vitamins you need. 7. Boost circulation Skin needs good circulation to help it look its best. By promoting better circulation, skin cells regenerate. A facial is a great way to boost the oxygen flow to your skin on your face. And don’t forget your body either! A full body massage is perfect for unwinding as well as increasing circulation all over. 8. Use make-up that boosts your radiance One of the best secrets for looking radiant day-to-day between visits to your aesthetician is to use make-up that helps you achieve that glowing look. Sue and Chef Iain are looking to bring the feel of a traditional, local pub back to the town with it now under the ownership of

North and South Leisure, . With over 20 years experience in the trade, Sue, who has been at The Kings Arms since October is hoping that their hardwork pays dividends, “Our aim is to create a mellow atmosphere, somewhere that maybe, a slightly more mature clientele would like although younger professionals are also more than welcome. We have also retained all the key features of a traditional pub” She says.” You certainly sense this, and not just from the decor that still displays the old wood beams from years gone by. Sue and Iain pride themselves on making themselves available to customers for a chat and guaranteeing that every visitor can feel as comfortable as a

A Warm Welcome from our Team at the Kings Arms, Horsham Your Landlady is Sue McGovern, a publican with great experience and for many years a Horsham girl, Sue is committed to great local ales to accompany the Gin, Rum, Whisky and Wine and will oversee the team. For the Kitchen Chef Iain Boyd joins Sue to complete our Management Team, Iain is a talented Chef with experience that includes South Lodge and he’s a Horsham lad to boot. You can be assured quality and assured local and a Great Sunday Roast is the foundation. Come on down to the King’s Arms Public House “a stunning transformation, creating a Country pub in the Town”

regular, “To me, it doesnt matter if you have never visited before, I will always come over, have a chat.” Says Sue. The pub is well stocked to cater for all tastes and after a quick survey of the bar you can see that both lager and ale drinkers are well looked after by the variety of products available, one in particular stands out and Sue mentions, “With Lagunitas, we are possibly the only pub in Horsham with it. I hadn’t seen it anywhere else.” Occasionaly though the pub also looks to give people a new taste experience by doing what is known as, “A tap takeover” I wasn’t sure what this meant but when Sue shows me the photos of the last one, I see how it works and definitely helps attract new customers whilst giving current patrons something different to try, “The ale’s all get replaced with some guest ales for the day courtesy of a guest supplier, we preview it on social media and mention it internally. It is really popular and we have people from other towns coming to visit just to try them.” Now whilst I have been admiring the draught products that are available I had almost forgotten about the other wide ranges availble. Gin seems to feature predominantly and the pub is proud to be the only one they know of in the area to serve non alcoholic gin. Food though is where the development is picking up pace, Iain has revitalised the kitchen and now provides customers with a home made menu that caters for every dietry requirement every day of the week except for Mondays when the kitchen is currently

closed. With a seafood night coming on Feb 28th and a lunchtime special menu in its initial stages too there is a keen determination to give people plenty of variety. It is an indepth menu that whilst sticking to tradition, gives you a chance to try something you may not alway find in a local town pub, “Food is important to us and we want people to enjoy it, sometimes people are in a rush though so now we offer you the chance to phone a lunch order in and it will be ready for when you arrive. We will also give them a 10% discount for ordering by phone.” Aside from the food and drink elements though the pub thrives on creating a good time for its customers and every 1st and 4th Monday of the month sees quiz night whilst live music takes place every Friday with the occasional Saturday event thrown in for good measure. The Saturdays are going to be a little more unique though with customers encourged to bring in their favourite vinyl records so they can be played for everyone to hear. Charity events, as mentioned in last weeks paper, are also high on the list and Sue and Iain would love to hear from anyone that has an idea or a cause where fundraisng could help. Keep an eye on both The District Post and The Kings Arms social media pages for some great competition news where the winners will get to sample some of the great food on offer! In the meantime head over to www.kingsarmshorsham.com to have a look at the menu.

KonMari Consultant Sparks Joy in Sussex and South East

You may have noticed Marie Kondo fever sweeping the land, since the Netflix airing of Tidying up with Marie Kondo last month. The Japanese de-cluttering expert has become an overnight success in the UK, and everybody wants to be Marie Kondo’d. Sadly, Marie Kondo herself can’t be everywhere, but there is a select group of KonMari Consultants that are highly-trained to deliver her magic and wisdom. Horsham based, Professional Organiser, Mimi Bogelund is the first and only KonMari Consultant in Sussex and one of only two in the South East. She trained with Marie Kondo in San Francisco in February 2018, qualified in July 2018 and achieved a coveted Bronze level in January this year. Mimi operates under the business name of The Organised Home & Life and provides professional organiser services, including, but not limited to,

de-cluttering, creating space and wardrobe edits, to clients across West Sussex, East Sussex, Surrey, Berkshire and Greater London. Interest in Marie Kondo’s method of tidying began with the launch of her now famous book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up. It launched in 2011, has been published in 30 countries, was a best seller in Europe and Japan and published in the US in 2014. Marie herself, was listed as one of Time Magazine’s ‘100 most influential people’ in 2015’. The method has had many converts as a result of the book, but the Netflix show has really catapulted her method to the masses. The KonMari Method ™ is a way of life and a state of mind that encourages cherishing things that spark joy in our lives. People are drawn to this philosophy not only because of its effectiveness but also because it places great importance on being mindful, introspective and optimistic. The charm of the KonMari Method ™ lies in its power to change lives, going far beyond just a helpful guide to tidying your home. A central part of the KonMari Method ™ process is about clearing out things that are no longer relevant and choosing to keep things that you love. Another key part is to tidy by category, not location, and to follow a prescribed order (clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous and sentimental items). This principle allows followers to develop their

‘tidying muscles’ by tackling the easiest categories first. Another favourite part of the process is the neat, folding techniques, for clothing, which create oodles of extra space as well as keeping clothing surprisingly wrinkle-free. Mimi is Danish, and as a naturally organised person, the disciplines she’s created over the years have been incredibly helpful in balancing the demands of a hectic work schedule with home and family commitments (senior roles with Captain Tortue, The Body Shop at Home, Virgin Vie and a Director of The Direct Selling Association). However, when she left a long business career in 2017, she discovered the Marie Kondo concept: “This inspiring system was truly life-changing for me, it allowed me to transform my home and banish clutter once and for all.” It prompted her to set up The Organised Home & Life and to train to be a KonMari Consultant so that she could share this amazing method with those in need of her help. Mimi explained: “I am so incredibly passionate about this system, on the surface tidying up is tidying up, but the KonMari Method ™ goes much deeper. It really is about an easily-achievable shift in dayto-day living and about surrounding yourself with things that make you happy. Apart from the side effects of saving time and money, once you adopt the method, the life-changing benefits of wellbeing are incredibly valuable.”

West Sussex Music Invites you Joseph and the Amazing to Learn to Play this March Technicolor Dreamcoat

Horsham-based charity, Music for All, will hold its eighth annual Learn to Play Day next month, and West Sussex Music will be opening the doors to its Horsham Music Centre this Saturday (23 March) to inspire new musicians and give children the chance to get a taste of some of the wide-ranging musical activities that it has to offer. Visitors to Horsham Music Centre at the College of Richard Collyer will be able to enjoy informal performances by West Sussex Music’s young musicians, as well as those from the County Ensembles which include West Sussex Youth Orchestra, West Sussex Youth Wind Orchestra and West Sussex Youth Big Band. In the afternoon, the County players will also be performing solos to showcase individual instruments and there will be taster sessions, where young visitors can try their hand at orchestral instruments including brass, strings and woodwind. Keen young vocalists will also have the opportunity to take part in a choir workshop led by Musical Director Sarah Forbes. “We are delighted to be opening the doors to our Horsham Music

Centre for this, the eighth national Learn to Play Day.” Said West Sussex Music Chief Executive, James Underwood, “At West Sussex Music we know that making music can really change lives and we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to come together to sing or play an instrument. I know that this belief is shared by our friends at Music for All and we are delighted to help them by supporting this worthwhile initiative.” Since being launched eight years ago, the Learn to Play Day initiative has helped thousands of people pick up and play a musical instrument. Paul McManus, CEO at Music for All, explained: “Our Learn to Play Day events are all about spreading the joy of playing a musical instrument and inspiring those of all ages to take up something that will not only have health benefits for the future, but that also brings so many people together.” . Every week during term time, Horsham Music Centre has much to offer young musicians. Children can enjoy a whole range of musical activities including bands, choirs,

orchestras, as well as lessons and aural and theory classes. The West Sussex Music Centres not only bring children together through a shared love of music, but also offer a clear progression route through the Music Centres, on to the West Sussex Youth Orchestras and Choirs and beyond that to Junior Conservatoires and national ensembles. So, whatever the choice of instrument, level of competence or age, there is a suitable ensemble or band to be found; whether it’s a percussion ensemble, string orchestra, wind band, choir or guitar group. There are also classes in musicianship as well as beginner instrumental classes and groups for pre-school children. For over 50 years, West Sussex Music has also supported projects that enable access to cultural opportunities for disadvantaged and disaffected young people through its strategic partnerships with other arts and cultural organisations and it plays a valued role as the Music Education Hub for West Sussex. A Not- for Profit Independent Company Limited by Guarantee with Charitable Status, West Sussex Music’s musical opportunities for children and young people are funded by income from parents, schools and the National Music Grant, administered by Arts Council England. JIM TAVARÉ - From Deadpan To Bedpan

In 2017, comedian, BAFTA award winner, Harry Potter actor and double bassist, Jim Tavaré, was involved in a near fatal head-on automobile collision in Los Angeles, where he has resided since 2009. He lived to tell the tale... After a hugely successful Edinburgh return in 2018 after 20 years and directed by Henry Normal, with his first narrative show, ‘From Deadpan To Bedpan’ Jim Tavaré has announced a UK tour this May. The

tour starts on 2 May at Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre, stops off at Crawley’s Hawth Theatre on 13 May, and culminates on 1 June at Brighton’s The Quadrant. The show tells the story of how a quick trip to the shops changed his life forever. It’s a heartwarming and seriously funny tale of survival against the odds, strange forebodings, unbelievably massive American medical bills, a dog called Mr Kippy, and the ultimate DIY disaster. After suffering catastrophic injuries (over 30 broken bones, including 14 broken ribs and punctured lungs that later collapsed, multiple fractures, blunt force trauma to his head and chest, a broken neck and a hand that detached from the wrist) that left him in intensive care on life support, he spent the next year in recovery facing an uncertain future. But instead of letting trauma define him, he emerged inspired with this show. Jim Tavaré is internationally renowned for his award winning comedy act featuring Bassie (his double bass). Jim is best known for co-writing and starring in The Sketch Show (ITV) (with Tim Vine & Lee Mack) and playing Tom the

Innkeeper in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He starred in his own TV series The Jim Tavaré Show (Channel 5) co-written with Ricky Gervais, and Jim Tavare Pictures Presents... (BBC2). He’s also appeared on three Royal Variety Shows after becoming a favourite with HRH Prince Charles leading to Tavaré performing several private events for the Queen and other members of the Royal Family. He got to know and connect with Princess Diana over the years. By co-incidence the injuries he sustained in his car accident mirrored hers. This emphasizes the words of the surgeon that if this had happened 20 years ago, he would not have survived. Jim became the only overseas act to reach the final of NBC’s Last Comic Standing and has appeared in several US TV shows and films including Californication, Chuck, Tosh.0, Jimmy Kimmel Live, I Spit on your Grave - Deja Vu and Tales of Frankenstein. Performance: Mon 13 May, The Hawth, Crawley. Tickets: Available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk

Sporting community mourns the much revered Hugh Thomas

Photo provided by Nick Evans

Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter

and beyond have expressed their sadness at the passing of Hugh Thomas, a well remembered and much respected player, umpire and administrator, Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard

Members of Horsham Cricket and Hockey Clubs, and the sporting community across the county

Marshall saying: “Hugh joined Horsham Cricket Club when he came down from Shropshire to teach geography and economics at Collyer’s, remaining with the Club when he subsequently went to live in Hurstpierpoint after joining the college there. He was a canny slow left arm orthodox bowler and a most popular member of the club, going on to skipper the 2nd XI and become Fixtures Secretary, an onerous job that he fulfilled for both the Cricket and Hockey Clubs for well over 40 years, until failing health forced him to hand over the reins in 2015. In addition to being Chairman of the Club, Hugh used all of his experience to help the organisation of recreational cricket in the county, quite rightly being installed as Vice President of Sussex Cricket in recognition of his exceptional contribution. In 2008, Hugh became our cricket President and, later, Life President. We shall all miss Hugh’s wisdom and good counsel, he was one of life’s true gentlemen.” Former Hockey Chairman Nick Evans says: “Hugh was a founder

member of the current Hockey Club in 1969, becoming President in 1977 – he tried to step down in 2017, but there was no appetite to replace him and he was immediately made Honorary Life President. He performed many roles, but above all he was a great supporter of all of our teams. Nobody was more proud of what the Club had become – he was as happy watching the junior stars of the future as watching the men’s and ladies’ 1st XIs and even when travelling became more difficult, Hugh was always keen to be kept updated on how our teams were doing. For many of us it feels like a huge and irreplaceable part of the Club has left us and we shall always remember him.” Barry Peay, who took over from Hugh Thomas as Horsham Cricket Club President, told the District Post: “Hugh’s passing is a great loss to Horsham sport. I was lucky to accompany him on 40 Club cricket tours to South Africa and India. And, Hugh was also a much-respected meteorologist, for many years supplying information to the authorities

from his own weather station.” Mike Parsons, a fellow Trustee with Hugh Thomas at Horsham Cricket Club, told us: “We always consulted Hugh on Club matters because he knew all the history and had bags of commonsense. Hugh ran Old Colleyrians cricket, he took college cricket tours to India and I enjoyed overseas trips with him, too!” Horsham Cricket Club member Chris Scovell added: “Hugh was friendly to all, and in the days of County Cricket at Horsham was “Mr Horsham” in the way that he greeted everyone. He was a true club man who did so much for the game in the county.” Richard Marshall summed up saying: “Hugh was a thoroughly nice man and the Club has received many tributes from far and wide.” Family announcement regarding the arrangements: “The funeral will take place in St John’s Chapel at Hurstpierpoint College on Thursday 28th February at 3.00 p.m. All will be welcome at the service and for refreshments afterwards in the Dining Hall. Family flowers only, please.”

Disciplined Horsham pull off well deserved win

Photos by Nick Evans

Saturday February 16 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 1 Eastbourne Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter The game started after the players and officials had observed two minutes silence, marking the sad passing of Horsham Life President Hugh Thomas.

A very early Horsham attack preceded a probing foray by Joey Humphreys, which went uncleared, allowing Jean Marshall to give Horsham the lead in the third minute. Horsham keeper Joe Elgar then produced a superb reaction save to keep out a high Eastbourne smash, before rushing out to block a ball fired across the goal. Three short corners followed, one for Eastbourne and

two for Horsham, the second of which saw Zac Chinn convert the rebound from a Sean Pearcy strike, doubling Horsham’s lead with just 15 minutes on the clock. Eastbourne, though, soon clawed back a goal, then their keeper made an impressive, full stretch save to prevent Horsham from reinstating their two goal cushion, the score remaining 2-1 at the break despite two late Eastbourne short corners. The second half began with sustained Eastbourne attacks, Horsham being reprieved by a close range miss. With Horsham defending stoutly Humphreys broke away, taking the ball down the length of the pitch before running out of support. Next came two Eastbourne short corners, the first was cleared by Peter Neave, and when the second was kicked clear it was smashed up field by Pearcy to be put in by Zac Chinn, diving at full stretch for Horsham’s stunning third goal. Eastbourne then pressed hard with two very late short corners, in between which Neave averted a thrusting attack, but it was Horsham’s day, deservedly so – their second win in three weeks. Match day coach Brian Humphreys told the District Post: “Not conceding goals is the trick! We’ve been playing well without getting anything, so this was very pleasing – Eastbourne are five places above us in the table and we had to work hard to stay in the game at times, but we maintained our discipline.” The two sides next meet in the Sussex Cup Final at the end of the season. Meanwhile, on Saturday Horsham travel to Southampton to take on current runners up Trojans. Guildford are the runaway leader, while Horsham are tenth, well clear of Slough and bottom club Woking.

Broadbridge Heath undone amid offside disputes Saturday February 16 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division AFC Uckfield Town 6 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the upper table clash at Uckfield, Broadbridge Heath were hoping to avenge their October 3-2 home defeat against the East Sussex side, but it was not to be, especially as they were deprived of the services of two senior regulars - George Cousins and goalkeeper Kieron Thorp. With deputy keeper Conor Evento also unavailable, teenage debutant James Marsh was drafted in, making a good early impression with a clean save from a high header. Heath responded, Ryan Brackpool being only marginally adrift from a corner before Heath appeared to take the lead

through Jamie Taylor, but the goal was mystifyingly disallowed. With Heath not finding it easy to retain their footing on the difficult surface, Marsh pulled off another save from a close range header, but, despite the linesman signalling offside, Smith subsequently gave Uckfield the lead. And, the hosts then benefited from another generous judgement when Maclean latched onto a rebound and creamed it into the net. Injuries extended the first half, Uckfield almost scoring their third with assistance from the woodwork, but Heath managed to reduce the deficit when Brackpool converted a corner just before the break. Two Uckfield second half goals gave Heath a mountain to climb, when first Camara got the ball in, swiftly followed by Okojie adding to Heath’s misery, offside again going unsanctioned, even though Uckfield themselves

were far from convinced of the goal’s legality. With the outcome already decided, Uckfield twisted the knife with additional goals - from Maclean and Cormack, Heath Assistant Manager Sam Chapman saying: “This was a thoroughly miserable day for Heath – a performance that we’ll have to get out of our system quickly. It was a hard introduction for youth teamer James Marsh, who could not be blamed for any of the goals and could have expected better cover from those in front of him: he showed enough in very difficult circumstances to confirm that he has the potential to play at this level in the future. We need to regroup to get back on track against Peacehaven & Telscombe at the Leisure Centre on Saturday, when we should welcome back Thorp, Cousins and, after his controversial suspension, Ollie Moore”.

Double clinched over Southgate Saturday February 16 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham Ladies 3 2 Southgate Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies reprised the score from when the two teams met in north London in November, with a 3-2 win after notching up an early goal at Christ’s Hospital last Saturday, Under 18 player Tassy Williams tapping in a beautiful ball from Louisa Denman. After Southgate equalised from a short corner, the score remained 1-1 at half time. In the second half Sam Stares latched onto a cross from Elle Blakesley to restore Horsham’s lead before a penalty was awarded for a crunching tackle, Charlotte (CJ) White putting Horsham 3-1 up with a flick from the spot. Southgate managed to reduce the

deficit, but Horsham successfully closed the game down to carry off all of the points, Team Manager Jane Denman telling the District Post: “That was a definite win for us!” Ladies’ Club Captain CJ White adding, post match: “Always good to get a win and that was a stronger, more positive performance from us today.” On Saturday the Ladies embark on their longest trip of the season – to Norfolk to play 5th placed Harleston Magpies, one spot above Horsham in the table - with whom they drew 2-2 at home in mid November. With six rounds of league fixtures remaining, Hampstead & Westminster top the table with 29 points, two ahead of Wimbledon, while Ipswich remain bottom, having lost all of their 12 games, scoring four goals and conceding 46 in the process. Southgate occupies the penultimate berth.

Horsham Deal with east Kent bogey Saturday February 16 – London 2 South East Deal & Betteshanger 22 30 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s previous matches at Deal have ended unhappily, so, the club were delighted to come away from the ground at the former Royal Marines’ HQ with a hard fought, gritty win. The whirlwind end to end start gradually settled into more measured play, Deal going ahead from a penalty before a converted try gave them a 10-0 advantage mid way through the first half. Declan Nwachukwu responded with a trademark run, a high tackle halting his progress, Tom Johnson kicking the resultant penalty, awarded in favour of a penalty try. A second successful Horsham penalty ate into the deficit, but, Deal’s decision to run their subsequent penalty paid dividends, a converted try giving them a 17-6 lead at the break. Changes in Horsham’s line up saw Deal put under pressure and a penalty try took the green & Whites to four points of the hosts and in command territorially. Sam Hampson then made extra ground, enabling skipper Richard Tredgett to get over the line, which, with Johnson’s boot, put Horsham ahead for the first time. Another impressive build up resulted in a Nwachukwu try and when Johnson obliged, Horsham were suddenly ten

points to the good. With a fourth, bonus point try eluding Horsham, conceded penalties paved the way for Deal to add a try, mercifully unconverted, but with the hosts trailing by just five points, Johnson kicked a penalty, Horsham shutting up shop to deliver the much-savoured 22-30 win, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “Although not a vintage performance by Horsham’s recent standards, this was a pleasing result against a side that we have not beaten on recent travels. Discipline was poor today with too many penalties given away and our fluidity in attack was below par, leaving a couple of opportunities out there in the first half that would have settled the nerves. Man of the Match was Jordan Smith for his tireless work rate, carries and a huge saving tackle, applauded by all. The league is tight – second-placed Horsham being on level pegging with third in the table Charlton Park - the points difference is in our favour, but we’re going to have to play better if we are to secure a play off spot!” Horsham have five scheduled league matches to play, starting with a home game against bottom club Aylesford Bulls on March 2nd, followed by a trip to Dover (7th), before Haywards Heath (5th) visit. Then, on March 30th Horsham go to Old Colfeians, looking to avenge defeats in both the league and cup, before 8th in the table Maidstone are welcomed on April 6th.

Disciplined Horsham pull off well deserved win

Not conceding goals is the trick! We’ve been playing well without getting anything, so this was

Back to back win preserves Horsham’s play off dream

Photos by John Lines Saturday February 16 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 2 0 Three Bridges Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter A goal in each half was sufficient to give Horsham a comfortable win at Culver Lane last Saturday, following on from their defeat of VCD Athletic the week before. Three Bridges had beaten Hor-

sham in December’s away fixture, but, now 13th in the table, they are still awaiting a win this year. Cray Wanderers on 65 points are running away with the league, 15 clear of second-placed Hastings, with Ashford United shading Horsham on goal difference, both sides having 48 points and a game in hand, leaving all very much still in contention for a much-coveted play off place. And, against Three Bridges, Horsham

made the early running when Chris Smith accepted a ball from Steve Metcalf, only to be thwarted by former Hornet James Shaw in the Bridges goal. Rob O’Toole was then floored in the box without sanction, before Kieran Lavery headed wide. But, Lavery soon made amends when he finished off Harvey Sparks’ supply to put Horsham a goal up in the 18th minute. Bridges responded, but both Connor French and Reece

Hallard were off target. Shaw then had little difficulty in dealing with a Dean Lovegrove shot ahead of another Sparks/Smith combo testing the visitors’ defence. With half time approaching, Lee Harding broke through, but was unable to convert, following which O’Toole’s attempt was too high. Horsham keeper Josh Pelling had earlier saved efforts from Gaskin and French, the score remaining 1-0 in Horsham’s favour at the

break. Eight minutes into the resumption Horsham looked certain to double their lead, yet Smith somehow contrived to miss a six yard sitter. Bridges rang the changes, but substitute Ibby Akanbi squandered a potentially dangerous free kick. Lavery then blazed over and Jack Brivio was also wayward, Gaskin almost making the Hornets rue their misses. Horsham, though, after some further disappointments, did managed to put the game to bed with just over 10 minutes remaining, Brivio coolly outwitting Shaw, securing all three points at the happy hunting ground that Horsham’s temporary Lancing home has become. On Saturday, Horsham take to the road with a long trip to deepest east Kent to take on 14th – placed Whitstable. Meanwhile, the Hornets have signed former Crystal Palace youth player Dan Hogan, an attacking midfielder. Previously at Whyteleafe, Hogan was with East Grinstead earlier in the season and on loan to Croydon, later making a successful recovery from a bad injury.

Elusive home win delights Horsham YMCA Saturday February 16 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 1 0 Pagham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter It wasn’t pretty and it wasn’t scintillating, but there was plenty of attacking intent as YMCA secured a much needed home win – their first success at Gorings Mead in almost three months - rebooting their challenge for a play-off place.

Earlier in the season, in the reverse fixture at Nyetimber Lane, the result was also 1-0, but that time mid table Pagham were the victors, so revenge was sweet. But, the first half was even – YM had early chances, which they were unable to fulfil, until Jack Hartley controlled the ball on the right, going on to give YM the lead mid way through the first half. Pagham then had two corners, blazing over from the first before onrushing YM keeper Aaron Jeal had to use all of his considerable height to punch away the second, preserving YM’s slender lead at

the break. The second half began with both sides seeking to create a telling opportunity - Pagham heading wide and YM’s Alex Barbary just unable to connect onto Adam Hunt’s cross. Another Pagham header was off target and their corner went harmlessly over, then Scott Murfin broke through and might have shot before the ball went out. Jeal came forward to clear another attack from the visitors, but YM were also pressing, Dean Bown breaking through, until lost balance denied him a shot. Pagham’s third corner of

the match came and went and, with action switching to the other end, both Bown and sub Tony Nwachukwu saw strong strikes blocked by the defence. A YM corner came to nought – as did free kicks for both teams, the game ending in YM’s favour after chances went begging for both sides, YM Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “Pagham are always a well-drilled side and they made second half changes up front, but we contained them well and Jeal hardly had to make a save after the break. That was a

disciplined performance from us and it’s great to return to winning ways at Gorings Mead. We’ve got two tough games coming up – on Wednesday at Shoreham we play AFC Uckfield Town in the Semi Final of the Peter Bentley Cup and on Saturday we head for the Saffrons to take on Eastbourne Town, who are third - one place above us in the table.” After beating Crawley Down Gatwick 5-1 on Saturday, Chichester City remain top – six points clear of Newhaven, who lost 1-0 at home to Hassocks.
