MP looks to assist Parents with their school placement fears russ bedford A Horsham School teacher has reached out to MP for Horsham Jeremy Quin after the school placement debacle caused anguish for many Families across the District.

Andrea Thomas was among many upset and wrote to the Member or Parliament to express her anger, concern and worry in a letter that clearly echos the sentiments of Parents and Children alike.

Many Children in the catchment area of Schools such as Tanbridge found themselves offered schools in Billingshurst and Crawley. Miss Thomas states, “This disgraceful situation of too few school places is a direct result of the increased housing developments in the Horsham area (which I support) BUT without the much needed investment in local public service infrastructure to support the rapid growth of housing.”

With the huge profits made by the building developers when it comes to housing, it must be asked why are they not being asked to invest in the local community to support the families moving into the houses they quickly want to make money off?

When a town has more residents

it earns more in council tax and with the new increases shortly coming into effect Miss Thomas raises the valid question of, “What is being done with the thousands of pounds of extra council tax money the local government will be taking from the extra houses?”

With Bohunt due to open in September 2019 there have been a lot of Children placed there but for some this additional school doesn’t reach their catchment area either. It begs the question will catchment areas be extended to accommodate Children and as Miss Thomas says to Mr Quin in her letter, “I would like to understand how you as my local MP will be lobbying on my behalf to address this scandalous situation that so many children find themselves in now and will do in future years.”

This issue isn’t unique to Horsham and this year The Good Schools Guide estimates that 606,000 places would be applied for, an increase of 23,000 on the previous year, experts also predict that 115,000 Children will miss out on their first choice school this year. In London there are approximately 700 Children without a placement for the new school year with a further 7250 not getting placed into any of their choices. In Hereford parents are planning to protest, and refer to the increased number of housing developments as adding a strain on the school system in the area.

great that new houses are added to the area with a view to accommodating new Families but if the town cannot handle the extra demands that this puts on its resources then is it not right that they plan in expectation of this

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens will open to the public on 6 April 2019. This further postponement of the March date follows nearly 2 years’ extensive restoration work on the Grade 1 Listed gardens and on site facilities - in one of the biggest UK garden restoration projects for nearly 30 years.

As an indication of the scale of the work, general manager Adam Streeter, says that some 10 miles of pathways have had to be inspected, and many rebuilt because of collapsing down into the steep valley in which the gardens are set; and checking some 10,000

trees individually and carrying out tree surgery where necessary: “We very much regret this further delay in opening the gardens - the decision was taken very reluctantly, after a careful review of the work to be done, and the health and safety and logistics implications. The further delay is primarily due to issues in constructing the new car park, which must be ready to receive many thousands of visitors in coaches and cars. We will be ready on April 6th”.

A major issue has been planning delays imposed on the estate as a result of the discovery of a great crested newt in the pond

of a greenhouse close to the the car park, when all further work in the vicinity had to be postponed until the newt moved on. Adam continued: “There has been a lot of anticipation around the opening - we get dozens of messages daily asking about the opening.

I can only say that we are doing everything we can to complete the work; and that visitors will be more than impressed by what we have achieved in renovating and restoring the gardens. With the pruning and clearance work the spring displays will be stunning.”

Closed to the public for nine years, the 240 acre estate previ-

ously attracted 50,000 visitors annually to see the outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells, collected from all over the world from the early 1800s.

Set in a steep-sided valley, the estate offers visitors a unique combination of lakes, woodlands and parkland walks to enjoy, as well as a Pulham rock garden built in 1890, and a rare colony of wallabies and also deer. There is a renowned dolls’ house museum, which features the local village and its community in the Edwardian era, to 1/12 scale.

The Grade II listed 19th-century Italianate style mansion is restored and updated and already open to visitors for a classic afternoon tea as well as bookings at Restaurant Interlude, which offers tasting menus with produce that is foraged, raised and produced on the estate and selected local farms.

The house is also available for catered private functions such as birthdays and weddings, as well as business events, with a number of meeting rooms, all recently refurbished.

Continued from front page Along with the issues surrounding our GP’s that recently gained a lot of press coverage this has again put pressure on Mr Quin to act on behalf of his constituents and help make this town better for its residents. A recent petition set up online by Malcolm Brierley asks the MP to, “Stop Government failing Horsham District’s Children.” It has gained over 1000 ‘e signatures’ so far and highlights that along with the current failings Horsham is also far down the rankings of other areas that matter.

The town is currently near the bottom of funding per student in the Country, ranked in the bottom 5 in the Country for Child mental health funding and 2nd worst in the Country for access to a GP. A quick look through the various social media postings about such issues show that the public are not happy and maybe now it has reached a level where people will act, if they don’t though, it could be something that blights the community for the foreseeable future.

Mr Quin has since issued a statement that he hopes will give many some understanding of the situation, “I was contacted over the weekend by a number of concerned constituents regarding the allocation of secondary school places. I recognise the distress this has caused parents and their children and I totally understand the strength of concern. The transfer from primary to secondary is hugely important step for any student and I appreciate how keen parents are for their child to attend their first choice school.

I urgently took this up with West Sussex County Council, who are the authority responsible for allocating school places. I understand the vast majority of applicants have been allocated their first choice and

where this has not been possible then another of their preferred schools. However I have been contacted regarding six students (to date) who have not been allocated one of their preferred schools.”

With the talk of funding being raised more than often Mr Quin says, “Local schools have in the past received investment to help them significantly expand the number of students they can accommodate but additional school places were required this year. I was pleased to help secure Government funding for a new secondary school to meet this demand (one of three new schools which are planned locally). The Bohunt School will initially be located close to Collyers in Hurst Road before transferring to what I am sure will be excellent purpose built premises.”

Mr Quin also has words for those that missed out on their preferred school, “In addition to speaking to West Sussex County Council I have also been in contact with Bohunt and welcome the fact that they are still willing to receive and will try and honour applications for places in September 2019.

I would encourage any parent who is not happy with the secondary school their child has been allocated, to lodge an appeal: if their preferred school place comes up in the next two weeks this appeal can always then be dropped.

I very much hope that we will see progress on this issue shortly.

While allocations are a matter for the County Council I would like to hear from parents who have applied for and not received a school place in Horsham so I can track how this is being resolved.”

Horsham boy joins The Police Force Horsham Police bought a smile to a young boys face recently when he was invited to the station to see that our Police force isn’t anything to be afraid of.....unless you are doing something particularly naughty!

James Glass, a 7 year old from Horsham was having trouble sleeping as he was scared of the Police.

PC Mike Harvey heard of this and decided it would need fixing!

After visiting the young man at his home PC Harvey then invited James to visit the police station and spend the morning finding out how the Police are here to help, “Nobody at that age should be scared or have anxiety. I really wanted to help as I am a disability liaison officer, so I know how anxiety and stress can affect people.

James’s parents said he had seen the police in TV shows and feared the police would come and get him if he were naughty.

“I wanted James to know that we are there to protect him and to keep him safe. Protecting good people is why I joined the police. If you can get people to trust you at this early age they will be confident in coming to the police if they are lost, for example.”

James got to see the old cells, tried on the hats and handcuffs as well as having a good look at the custody van.

He was then presented with a certificate authenticating him as a friend of the police.

James attended the station again on Monday alongside his sister to present PC Mike and the team with a thank you card with camera crews from Meridian news there to capture ther young mans story.

James’ Mum and step Dad were delighted with how it benefitted the confidence of James and helped tackle his anxiety, “”The change in him has been remarkable. He now gets excited when he sees a police car and wonders if it’s one of his ‘friends from Horsham Police.

“We had such a great time and I still can’t thank Horsham Police enough for such a heart-warming response. Everyone was fantastic and so welcoming. Definitely community work at its finest!

“With his new found confidence, James is telling his school all about it in their assembly and passing the message on to his peers.”

He is now thinking of adding Policeman to his career options unless he stick with the original plan of being a pilot

The daughter of a woman, who fought and survived breast cancer twice, will be lining up, with over 40,000 other runners, to face the challenge of the

Virgin London Marathon 2019, in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Samantha-Jane, who is hoping to run the 26.2 miles on Sunday 28 April, told The District Post that, during her mum’s recoveries, Macmillan Cancer Support were there for her family when they needed help: “And, as cancer is a horrid disease with

no respect for age, gender or religion they may also be for many of your friends and families too.

But whether a sufferer, survivor, friend or family member, the team at Macmillan can be with you ever step of your journey.

“Supporting Macmillan means I will be raising funds for them, to help them work with people, whether they need advice about money and work, to being there to listen when people just want to talk.”

Samantha-Jane has set herself a target to raise over £2,500 for the charity which means so much to her and her family. She explained: “To help with my fundraising, I will be holding a Charity Race Night at The Shelley Arms in Broadbridge Heath on Saturday 16th March. With the first race setting off at 20:30, we plan to have 6-8 races, dependent on sponsorship. I am working with local companies to ask them to sponsor a race, like they do at the Cheltenham festival for example, and am really hopeful that we can get a good crowd to come along and support the evening before St Patrick’s Day, as Macmillan runners call themselves #teamgreen and so we hope to add to any pub decorations with a see of Macmillan green bunting and balloons.

“Additionally, I am offering what I am calling Macmillan Marathon Memory Miles (26 Heroes). This is where for a donation of £26.20 I will get the name of a friend or family member placed on my T-shirt, 1 for each mile, and I will run in their memory, in celebration or in support of them.”

Local School rated ‘Outstanding’

by Ofsted for ninth time

Ingfield Manor School in Billingshurst, is celebrating after being judged as ‘Outstanding’ for the 9th time by Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills.

Managed by specialist education provider, Ambito Care and Education, Ingfield Manor is a day and residential school, which offers specialist conductive education to children and young people with neurological impairments and complex medical conditions.

Jeremy Quin, Member of Parliament for Horsham Constituency, visited the school to pass on his congratulation to staff and students.

In its report, Ofsted praised the ‘overall experiences and progress of young people’ and ‘how well children and young people are helped and protected’ as outstanding.

It recognised that the ‘special school provides highly effective services that consistently exceed the standards of good’ and ‘the actions of the school contribute to significantly improved outcomes and positive experiences for children and young people.’

The quality of support was highlighted as ‘exceptionally high level’ with ‘significant and lasting progress in students’ ability to communicate, which improves their

quality of life’, and ‘the promotion of independence is strong.’

As part of the rigorous three-day inspection, Ofsted found that ‘students experience a very high standard of care to meet their health, cultural or ethnic needs’. Staff were also found to have ‘highly honed skills to promote students’ independence’, and they ‘consider a child’s abilities, motivation and energy levels when judging the level of support needed.’

Through targets set by staff for students based on education, health and care plans, the progress of the children was reported as ‘gradual but still significant,’ with other achievements being ‘remark-

able, particularly the progress made in communication.’

Mrs Tracey White, Principal at Ingfield Manor, said: “As one of the UK’s leading centres for conductive education, with a national reputation for developing communication, we are delighted that the inspectors have recognised Ingfield Manor School as a place of excellence, where children can realise their educational and personal potential in a safe, supportive and fun environment.”

Martin Thomas, CEO at Ambito Care and Education, said: “Our vision is for all children and young people to be educated close to home with all their individual education, care and health needs being met. Our schools and colleges support young people to develop the skills needed to be more independent as adults.

Being awarded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted is testament to the dedication and commitment of our staff at Ingfield Manor School, and we congratulate them on their continued success.”

YMCA Horsham, part of YMCA DownsLink Group (YMCA DLG), is hosting a Sleep Easy event on Friday 22 March and staff from Horsham District Council will brave freezing conditions to combat youth homelessness by sleeping rough for the charity.

Participants will sleep out in the grounds of Horsham YMCA Football Club with just cardboard and sleeping bags to protect them from the elements.

Robert Jarvis, Head of Housing and Community Services at Horsham District Council, said: “Working on a day to day basis to help homeless people in our district, and as a previous participant of a Sleep Easy event, the opportunity to take part again was one not to be missed. So

much of the great work that the YMCA is involved in relies upon the support and generosity of local residents. This support is needed now more than ever, given the financial pressures placed upon charities like the YMCA and the increasing numbers of people rough sleeping both locally and nationally.”

YMCA Horsham provides safe accommodation and opportunities for young people who have been made, or are at risk of becoming, homeless.

Steve Darken, Head of Operations West Sussex, said: “We are delighted to have the team from Horsham District Council join us for a night under the stars, raising money and awareness for homeless and vulnerable young people.

“We’re looking for local companies and individuals to get involved. We would love to hear from anyone interested in taking part. It won’t be warm or comfortable, and it’s not a true taste of homelessness, but it’s certainly a thoughtprovoking experience. I encourage anyone with a concern for the homeless to sign up and raise money to make a difference.”

Last year, YMCA DLG provided a home for more than 900 young people across West Surrey and East and West Sussex who would otherwise have been homeless. Adequate funding is a constant challenge.

The Sleep Easy event means that money is available to support these young people beyond the confines of statutory funding.

A volunteer who took part in Sleep Easy last year said: “It was a really eye-opening experience.

It made me think about things I hadn’t even considered before about sleeping rough. The work YMCA do is indispensable.”

MP joins cubs for charity Financial Maths success at Collyer’s bag pack for the homeless Arundel & South Downs MP, Nick Herbert, joined cub scouts from the Bury and Pulborough packs who were packing shopping bags to raise funds for the homeless charity Depaul International on Saturday (2 March).

The cub scouts were helping shoppers to pack their bags in Tesco in Pulborough in return for a donation to their chosen charity.

The cubs chose to support Depaul with their fundraising initiative after meeting Mr Herbert recently.

The MP had visited the Bury and Pulborough packs in November for UK Parliament Week, when they ran a questions and answers session to learn more about how Parliament works.

Mr Herbert was joined at the event by Jason Eades, Senior Partnership Manager for Depaul, a charity which has The Duchess of Norfolk as its Patron.

Jonathan Pearce, leader of Bury Cub Pack of 1st Pulborough and West Chiltington Scout Group, said:

“When Nick and Jason came to talk to the Cubs last term, one of the topics we discussed was homelessness. The Cubs were moved to hear about the issues faced by the homeless and were interested to learn about the supportive work of DePaul International/UK. The Cubs agreed they would like to do something to contribute to the charity and we are hugely grateful to Tesco Pulborough for the opportunity to conduct this bag pack to raise funds. We would also like to thank Nick and Jason for their interest and their ongoing encouragement.”

Mr Pearce confirmed that the cubs had raised £270.28.

Mr Herbert said: “This was a really great initiative by the cubs.

They decided who they wanted to raise money for and how they were going to do that. They have worked hard today to help shoppers and to raise money which will support the wonderful work which Depaul undertakes for the homeless.”

Students and teachers celebrated the success with Collyer’s Principal Sally Bromley (centre).

In a presentation ceremony hosted by Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, students received certificates for successfully passing the Collyer’s Certificate in Financial Maths.

The students took the course to improve their understanding and application of mathematics to real life situations.

Joel Hofmann, maths teacher and course creator, was delighted: “This has been a really useful and practical course for our students. It has taught them important life skills and helped them to see how maths can be used in the real world. Several students have already told me how the course has helped them to manage their finances and prepare for life after college.”

The Collyer’s Certificate in Financial Maths covers a range of important and relevant topics involving real world mathematics. Learners studied topics such as calculating Tax and National Insurance contributions – vital for any students considering running a business or being self-employed later in life. They also learnt how mortgage repayments were calculated, what expenses are involved in renting a property and how to determine which savings account would be best for their needs. Students also learnt how to manage their financial health, what factors should be considered when thinking about a loan or finance plan and how to budget money whether they are at University or

in employment.

Hannah Page, Head of Maths, said: “Making links between what the mathematics students are learning and the practical applications in the world around us has always been a key principle in our teaching, and this course has helped us to make these connections even clearer.”

The course ran over six weeks and, at the end, students had to provide a portfolio of work and sit a timed exam to demonstrate their understanding of the topics covered. Each of the problems in the portfolio and questions in the exam were set around real life situations similar to those the students may themselves meet later in life, such as a working family trying to budget for a holiday while managing their other expenses.

Maths teacher, Rob Ettridge, said: “This course has been an excellent addition to the wide range of maths programmes that we are able to offer here at Collyer’s.”

Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, was extremely proud: “We have an excellent mathematics department and these talented students, and their teachers, have worked really hard to be successful. Congratulations to everyone involved and a particular thank-you to Joel Hoffman for his hard work in organising this valuable course.”

Children’s Book Award 2019 Maverick Publishing are thrilled to announce that their book The Wondrous Dinosaurium, written

by Steve Brown, has been chosen by the children of the Children’s Book Award as one of the Top 10 books for the 2019 award (Younger Children category).

Children from 250 school groups participated in the voting process and many children will attend the event to meet the authors at the ceremony in June.

As the only children’s book award voted for entirely by children, the Children’s Book Award has a proud history of spotting children’s classics and future stars of the children’s book world. It was the first UK national children’s book award to be won by Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson, Korky Paul, Jeremy Strong, Rick Riordan and Suzanne Collins.

Kinder Living Home Show sees record visitor numbers and new business award

The Kinder Living Home Show took place in Horsham at the weekend to a warm response from local people, with visitors numbers well up on previous shows.

“We had a really busy day on Saturday.” said show organiser Jeanette Mercer. “We heard about Storm Freya, so when I woke up to that torrential downpour on Sunday I feared we might see very few visitors. But people came -

some of them dripping wet - and they really enjoyed themselves.”

Jeanette credits the show’s appeal to working together with other local environmental groups, and a big shift in public attitudes to environmental matters.

“People know there is a problem, and they want to know how they can help. Kinder Living focusses on the changes people can make to their own home and daily life - how ever small some of those

changes are.”

The Kinder Living team collaborated with other local groups, including Horsham Repair Cafe, Transition Horsham and Friends of Horsham Park. They offered repairs to tech and small appliances, gardening talks and workshops, a clothes swap and textile repairs. Stalls at the event covered themes such as avoiding food waste, reducing plastic, saving energy and water, up-cycling and much more.

New this year was the Kinder Business Award, with the first one being presented by County Councillor Morwen Millson to Bruce Phillips, Managing Director of Foundry Press Ltd. The award recognised Foundry Press’s commitment to exacting environmental standards throughout their printing business.

There was plenty for children visiting the show too - from learning about sustainable textiles and fun ways to recycle, to planting gifts for Mother’s Day with Friends of Horsham Park.

Divorce law behind the times and in the headlines

Nigel Winter with MP Jeremy Quin It’s only taken 50 years, but the law is finally set to catch up with the practice of no-fault divorce.

Family law expert Nigel Winter of DMH Stallard explains.

After 50 years the law is finally set to change to formally allow ‘no fault’ divorce and dispense with the need to assign blame.

As things currently stand, if you are looking to divorce technically you have to rely on demonstrating ‘irretrievable breakdown’ and two of the five key elements carry a degree of blame - adultery and unreasonable behaviour.

Divorce lawyers have long recognised that the ‘blame game’

is extremely unhealthy; it can lead to long term damage within families and undermine attempts to resolve financial settlements and is therefore best avoided.

Protocols drawn up and adopted over many years demonstrate that lawyers are committed to avoiding conflict, even in an adversarial system tailored for it.

So avoid blame as far as possible when considering divorce; if your petition is based on ‘unreasonable behaviour’, there just has to be sufficient reason to prove irretrievable breakdown.

That balancing act of establishing irretrievable breakdown whilst not offending the other party, is one that lawyers have endeavoured to achieve for many years whilst waiting for Parliament to catch up and introduce no fault divorce.

I was fortunate to be able to discuss the need for reform with Government Whip and Horsham MP, Jeremy Quin, last summer ahead of the wider consultation that took place in the autumn.

That consultation followed several years’ pressure from the legal profession, and we were delighted when Justice Secretary, David Gork, finally confirmed that legislation will be introduced in the next Parliament to

remove the need for separating couples to allocate blame for their relationship breaking down.

The drive for no fault divorce has been supported in recent years by the high profile case of Owens v Owens in which the judge agreed with the husband’s defence of an ‘unreasonable behaviour’ divorce petition from the wife, meaning that the couple have now to wait for a full five year separation before they can divorce.

The facts of Owens –v- Owens

are rare, and many divorce lawyers will go through their entire career without encountering a single defended divorce; a swift and amicable divorce is possible under the current law, but it depends on both parties demonstrating a degree of goodwill, but the change in the divorce law is long overdue and very welcome.

Saturday March 2 – London 2 South East Horsham 57 22 Aylesford Bulls Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham despatched bottom club Ayesford Bulls at home last Saturday, bringing their seasonal points tally against the beleaguered Kent side to 107, Horsham retaining second spot with Charlton Park on level pegging breathing down their necks, while Beckenham are well clear in the lead.

With absences of senior regulars giving opportunities to others, Horsham started strongly, scoring in the second minute after Sam Hampson left the defence standing to put Declan Nwachukwu through, Tom Johnson converting. Seven minutes later Hampson again surged through, this time supplying Jack Osgood to complete, Johnson’s kick being defeated by the swirling wind. Aylesford responded two tries of their own, fortunately unconverted, but reducing Horsham’s advantage to just two points – until the Green & Whites bit back, Hampson crashing over, a feat promptly emulated by the ever thrusting Nwachukwu, again Johnson’s normally reliable

boot being denied by the elements.

Starting the second half 22-10 to the good, Horsham soon got back on the scoreboard with a Nick Bell try, this time Johnson adding the extras, following an earlier try by the visitors. Mike Watts then gained the line and, with Johnson

Horsham need to hang on to second spot to qualify for the play offs and have a long trip to 7th placed Dover on Saturday, whom they beat 48-14 at home in November. Then, after a free weekend, Horsham welcome Haywards Heath for a league and cup double header on March 23, followed by a tricky visit to Old Colfeians, against whom they have endured two defeats earlier this campaign, followed by the final league fixture with a visit from mid table Maidstone, whom Horsham trounced in September.

Then a penalty gave the visitors the lead, before, just ahead of the break, Boro got over the line for their second try, new recruit Kieran Leeming finding Joe Serna. The kick failed, but Boro led 12-10 at the interval.

Resuming, Boro had the benefit of the wind at their backs and the slope in their favour, yet Folkestone had

the possibility of regaining the lead, but their penalty kick went just wide. Spurred on, Lewis Morton scythed through the Folkestone ranks to drive over, leaving bewildered defenders in his wake, which, with the successful conversion, put Boro 19-10 in front, a conceded penalty promptly eroding that advantage. With Boro pressing hard for a fourth, bonus point, try, Folkestone missed out with another penalty, the game ending in a 19-13 win for Boro, the visiting defence thwarting all further efforts.

After his 150th game in charge, Boro Head Coach Clayton Saunders told the District Post: “Hats off to the whole team, they started strong and scored just before and just after half time. Resilience in defence, coupled with a

strong display from the forwards resulted in a complete performance, with Lewis Morton richly deserving the Man of the Match award for his immense power.” Frazer Oliphant-Hope added: “We’re now sixth and should be a little stronger when we go to eighth-placed Bromley on Saturday, we beat them 27-17 at home in November and will be intending to complete the double. After Bromley we’ve got three games left and, looking towards next season, I’m encouraged by the good young players coming up through the ranks, boding well for the future.”

Horsham Ladies overwhelmed by rampant leaders Saturday March 2 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 0 6 Hampstead & Westminster Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the midst of a tough run of fixtures, Horsham Ladies were unfortunate to come up against

league leaders Hampstead & Westminster in especially rampant form at Broadbridge Heath last Saturday.

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season the Londoners beat Horsham 4-0 and this time the damage was even more severe.

Apart from their proven goal scoring ability, Hampstead have by far the best defence in the league, conceding just 8 goals from 14 matches, unsurprisingly

having been beaten just once this campaign. But, Horsham kept them out until the 22nd minute, before Lauren Turner promptly added the first of her two goals, giving the visitors a 2-0 advantage at the break.

Play resumed with Horsham defending well, but after Hampstead scored again – in the 52nd minute – the floodgates opened, three more goals coming in quick succession, the last from a short

corner.

Horsham Ladies’ Coach Chris Bowen told the District Post: “Hampstead & Westminster are a very strong, well-drilled team and it’s good to play and learn from sides like them – they were really dynamic going forward. We are building our team and had five under 18s out there today. I can’t criticise the team they battled hard and there is no disgrace in losing to such a powerful side:

we have to acknowledge that we were up against a better outfit this time. They were clinical – the best team we’ve come up against this season and they didn’t allow us to maximise the opportunities that we created”.

Horsham, now eighth with four league games remaining, have another tough assignment on Saturday when they travel to current runner up Wimbledon, to whom they lost 3-1 in October’s home game

Proud Horsham beat leaders Guildford Horsham restored their two goal cushion through Zac Chinn, and it might have got even better, but Sean Pearcy’s fierce strike was too aerial, Horsham having the more comfortable half time team talk.

As anticipated, Guildford restarted strongly, but their short corner was well saved, Horsham keeping them at bay, until, in the 15th minute Guildford broke down the right wing and, with Horsham standing off, a close range supply was converted. Several times this season Horsham had surrendered a lead, going on to lose, but, to their great credit, they maintained focus and defended brilliantly in the face of Guildford domination, Elgar having another outstanding game in goal producing several impressive reaction saves, both from short corners and open play. With Guildford’s frustration bubbling over on the pitch, Peter Neave’s smash from a Horsham short was averted, the final whistle bringing warm applause from the sizeable crowd and cheers from the Horsham team, Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “This had been coming – we’ve been playing well without just desserts – I always knew that we could beat any team in the league, but perhaps not Guildford! We only had 13 players here today and it was pleasing to see goals from all three of our forwards, and, again, Joe Elgar was absolutely superb - the big difference between the teams.”

Saturday March 2 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 2 Guildford Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Spirited Horsham inflicted top of the table Guildford’s first defeat of the season – the Surrey side’s reverse coming in their 19th game.

And, it was a richly deserved victory, two Horsham goals in the first quarter of an hour giving the visitors plenty to think about.

Prior to the game, Guildford had scored 77 goals and conceded just 24, both the best stats in the league, and, in November Horsham were beaten 8-1 in the

corresponding away fixture, so revenge was particularly sweet.

Horsham were all over Guildford in the opening ten minutes and were rewarded when a short corner was parried out to Chas Richardson to give them the lead.

Then, with Horsham attacking again, Sam MacDonald doubled Horsham’s lead. A rare Guildford foray drew two excellent saves from Horsham keeper Joe Elgar amid a rhetorical exhortation from the Guildford ranks: “Shall we wake up now?” But, they, did not have long to wait to get onto the score sheet, after another short corner was saved, causing Elgar to be out of position, the ball was tapped in. Heath earn a hard fought draw against close rival Tuesday February 26 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Crawley Down Gatwick 1 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter At the beginning of the season Heath beat Crawley Down Gatwick by the odd goal in nine at the Leisure Centre, but CDG’s ground at Hophurst Lane’s Haven Centre has not always been a happy hunting ground for the Bears, and the hosts, just below Heath in the table, proved to be a hard nut to crack, despite Heath being in command for much of the game. The pre match warm up started badly for Heath with keeper Kieron Thorp having to withdraw with skipper Tom Bold also sidelined on the bench because of a badly damaged ankle from the previous Saturday’s game versus Peacehaven & Telscombe. Heath, though, got off to a spirited start, with George Cousins, Devon Fender and Jamie Taylor all keeping CDG defenders on their toes and Heath thought they had gone

ahead when Fender crashed in the rebound from Ollie Moore’s strike, but both sides were puzzled when the ref held that the ball had been illegally taken from CDG keeper Greaves. However, CDG were also creating opportunities, but various set pieces came and went, stand in Heath keeper Conor Evento and the defence keeping CDG at bay.

Taylor then collected Carney’s supply but the attack was thwarted, the first half ending goal-less.

Heath re-started with less dynamism and paid the penalty when Ollie Leslie gave CDG the lead. Carney, Martyn Flack and Moore put CDG under pressure, but Taylor secured the equaliser by deftly lobbing Greaves. Re-energised, Heath pushed for all three points, but Carney and Taylor were unable to convert promising situations, the game finishing one apiece with unrewarded forays at either end following a prolonged delay after referee Blogg became injured, Heath Assistant Manager Sam Chapman saying: “We had to settle for a point from this fast and well-fought game.”

Heath come from behind to win at The Lashmar Saturday March 2 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division East Preston 1 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was the third encounter between the two sides this season and Heath were delighted to come away from the Lashmar with all three points, reprising the score from November’s home match and avenging September’s elimination from the FA vase at East Preston’s hands. And, last Saturday’s win was all the more pleasing because away victories against East Preston have not been commonplace and Heath won with spirit, bouncing back from a deficit to do so. Injuries depleted Heath – keeper Kieron Thorp and Tom Bold again having to sit out, the match starting with the hosts surviving a scare when a George Cousins’ attempt narrowly passed the goal. Then, East Preston keeper Bentley had to excel to keep out two close calls from Jamie Taylor. But, the home side also had their moments, and Heath defenders – notably Bradley Peters and Ryan Brackpool – had to be at their best to quell danger, until, in

the 35th minute, Jakob Heryet gave Preston the lead, Heath trailing by the single goal at the break.

Urged on by Manager Steve Painter, Heath responded and were repaid mid way through the second half when Taylor cleared Bentley with a lob for his fifth success in his seventh outing back in a Heath shirt.

Painter rang the changes, subs including former youth teamer Mason Doughty, recently signed from Three Bridges, who lost no time in troubling busy keeper Bentley.

Heath were creating more opportunities and were a tricky proposition with the wind at their backs, persistent attacks bearing fruit on 75 minutes when Martyn Flack headed home. Preston pressed on for an equaliser but Evento kept them at bay, Heath celebrating a well-deserved, hard fought win, leaving them 7th, two points shy of 5th in the table Saltdean.

Heath return home on Saturday to welcome Shoreham from the lower reaches of the table ahead of two tough fixtures – against thirdplaced Eastbourne Town at the Leisure Centre, followed by a trip to current runners up Newhaven. Chichester City remain top – nine points clear.

Timely win aids Horsham Hornets promotion push

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After their tedious midweek draw against East Grinstead, Horsham, with a changed line up, returned to winning ways, completing the double over Hythe Town, who are in search of an elusive win following a recent poor run of form.

With unfulfilled opportunities, this may not have been a vintage Horsham display, but the three points earned keep the Hornets in line for a much-coveted play

off spot, cementing them in second position with 55 points from 28 matches – 13 points shy of runaway leaders Cray Wanderers, but three ahead of Haywards Heath and four and five to the good over Ashford and Hastings respectively, Horsham, Haywards Heath and Hastings having played 28 matches, while Cray and Ashford have each had 27.

Early Horsham chances included a corner, an incomplete Jack Brivio foray, Lee Harding shooting just wide and a Chris Smith incursion. Hythe, though almost drew first blood, but Horsham keeper Josh Pelling’s alertness diverted the danger, before Horsham’s Smith – twice - and Joe Shelley

tested the visiting defence. Mid way through the first half, with Horsham looking the more likely to score, Lewis Hyde, playing in place of Dean Lovegrove, supplied Harding who made space and fired home. Buoyed by the goal, Horsham kept pushing, Hythe keeper Tony Coxall having to be at his best to keep them at bay, ahead of the Hornets almost conceding an equaliser, Pelling negating the possibility of a Dylan Merchant own goal. However, Horsham did soon go further ahead when, benefiting from a good build up, George Hayward doubled his seasonal tally with a well struck volley. Hythe responded but their Captain Chris Kinnear could only

sear the crossbar. Rob O’Toole, Harding, Smith and Merchant then put Hythe under pressure with a series of attacks, but somehow the score remained 2-0 in Horsham’s favour at the break.

Early in the second half Sid Sollis embarked on a solo run which came to nought. Yet, Horsham should have increased their lead just before the hour mark, but Shelley was unable to latch onto O’Toole’s supply and loanee Dan Pearse’s shot was sent off for a corner, and, when Smith was floored, shouts for a penalty went unheeded. A combination of further missed opportunities, coupled with excellent keeping by the youthful Coxall prevented

additional Horsham goals. Then, following Horsham substitutions, Hythe’s soaring Sollis provided some solace with a neat header, putting the result in doubt. Undeterred, Horsham kept attacking, but were continuously thwarted

by Coxall. Hythe, too, were pressing hard, a superb save by Pelling keeping Horsham in front, another Horsham chance failing to bear fruit, Coxall again earning praise.

But, it was Horsham’s game and on Saturday they have the toughest of challenges with a visit to Cray Wanderers, who will be striving to avoid a Horsham double, the Hornets being the only side to overturn Cray this season – by four goals to two at Lancing in December.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA completed an important win against Little Common in Eastbourne last Saturday, tempestuous weather making it far from plain sailing after the game had started dramatically with Dean Bown – emerging from his lean spell to return to scoring again - heading

a 30 second goal, Alex Barbary picking him out straight from the kick off.

Mid way through the half YM’s lead was doubled courtesy of an own goal generously donated by the hosts. Two minutes later, Tom Gilbert put YM three up, shortly after which the howling gale held up a YM pass, enabling Little Common to claw back a goal, Lewis Hole benefiting from his fortunate intervention. Then, just before half time, a disputed penalty was converted by Russell Eldridge, leaving the score at 3-2 in Horsham’s favour at the break.

With both sides finding it extremely difficult to control the ball, the second half ended without the addition of further goals.

Speaking after YM had completed the double over 17th-placed Little Common, Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Not long after we started we were hit by a severe south coast squall, very strong wind making it impossible to play accurate football.

Our keeper, Aaron Jeal is a big strong fellow and normally has no difficulty in kicking the ball the length of the field, but twice he had to re-take goal kicks be-

cause the ball hadn’t left the area and was being blown back towards our goal. A flying wheelie bin almost took me out and the roof of the stand looked as though it was about to take off. Little Common are struggling, but the weather was a leveller and we were very grateful to hear the final whistle – anything might have happened in that gale! We were delighted with the result, of course, and with nine games left we need to keep winning to compete for a play off place.” Fourth in the table YM have a game in hand over Eastbourne Town (third), whom they trail by one point.
