Horsham Man helps celebrities raise money for Comic Relief russ bedford Climb Kiliminjaro twice? Not something many of us could claim to have done, in fact most of us would probably be thinking that once is more than enough and thinking about it is probably as far as we would have got. Not local man Ben Jacobs though, he has now completed the task twice, raising money for charity both times. This most recent one being in aid of Comic relief assisting 9 celebrities on their way up and down the mountain. With his company the Kings Knight group, Ben has looked after such names as Rhianna and A$AP Rocky, but he rates this as one of the hardest challenges in his professional career, “The challenge for me was to do my job, whilst climbing a mountain. Looking after 9 celebrities and the BBC crew who were making a documentary on the climb was a real test of my skills. They depended on me but we all worked really well together as a team.” Says Ben So with this extreme physical

exertion I wondered how much training one would need, Ben laughs as he recounts his preparation, “I was given 2 months notice but had to work for a month of it. So a month before the climb I began being dropped off 15-20 miles from home by my wife and then walking back, I loaded up heavy packs and walked with them too. I did this about 2-3 times a week.” One thing the training may not be able to prepare you for is the altitude and the effects it can have on the body, “The oxygen levels can really affect you at around 2500-3000m and you can start getting headaches and nausea, I was lucky not to suffer from that but both of my feet really swelled up which made it really tough and the whole team at some point felt the effects of such a climb” The Celebrities really impressed Ben though, “They all did so well and throughout they were always so determined to raise as much money as possible. I was really surprised by Leigh-Ann and Jade from Little Mix as well as Dani Dyer. Those three were so positive and worked so hard to achieve the goal.” More on page 2

Council urges residents to register to vote ahead of 2019 elections Horsham District Council is encouraging as many residents as possible to take part in the district Council elections on Thursday 2 May 2019. In order to vote in the elections, residents must make sure that that they are registered to vote by Friday 12 April. Anyone already registered to vote will receive their poll card in early April. If you are not registered, you cannot vote and your credit rating may be affected. Commenting on the election, Returning Officer, Glen Chipp, said: “On 2 May the Horsham District will vote to elect District councillors to represent each ward within the Horsham District. “It is important that as many of our District’s residents as possible understand the need to register to vote if they haven’t already done so. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to have your say.” If you have recently moved to the District or have just turned 18, there is still time to get on to the electoral register in time for the election. Registering is quick and easy and can be done online at: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote at any time. If you are unable to register online, a paper form can be requested by contacting

the council’s Electoral Services team. Parish council elections will also take place on 2 May. These are the first elections to take place using new ward boundaries following a review last year. This means that some households are now in a different ward from previous years. New polling stations will be in use this year, and voters are encouraged to check their poll cards carefully or the find your polling station webpage for information on where they can vote. Electors who are unable to vote at the polling station can apply for a postal vote or appoint a proxy to vote on their behalf. The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 5pm on Monday 15 April. Postal votes will be sent out from Tuesday 16 April. The deadline for appointing a proxy is 5pm on Monday 24 April. Both forms are available on the Horsham District Council website or can be requested from Electoral Services. “Kiliminjaro: The return”

Continued from front page You may remember that a similar expedition was carried out in aid of Comic relief 10 years ago and this years attempt has been renamed “Kiliminjaro: The return” This time though it wa a different route that was taken, “10 years ago they completed it via the Southern circuit, this time it was the Northern. One that is seen as having a greater chance of success but harder to climb.” says Ben. I wondered how Ben found himself in such a position, “ It was word of mouth really, I am quite well known through my job and the organiser of the trek had known of my previous roles, recomended me and then it all came from there.” With the 7 day expedition now complete and Ben back in more familiar surroundings it must be

nice to know he has helped people make an incredible impact on a very well known charity, “It is amazing. When we finished the climb we were told that the figure raised so far for Comic relief this year had hit £800,000 already. Seeing the work that is done through the money raised is just incredible. Thanks to comic relief, Malaria has been totally wiped out in some areas. and Non Stop Party Shop, organised the World Book Day costume party and story reading, with local children’s entertainer Tomfoolery reading the world famous Gruffalo tale to the assembled children. After the storytelling bonanza on the Carfax bandstand, nursery school and primary school children then had their costumes judged in the categories of, Best Pre-school Costume, Best Boy’s Costume, Best Girl’s Costume and Best Superhero Costume. Horsham Markets and their street food traders chose the day to launch their special smaller appetites menu, with portions priced at just £4 each, providing an ideal opportunity for everyone to become a “taste explorer” and enjoy some freshly cooked local produce. Commenting on the event, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “What a great opportunity for local children to meet a larger than life size Gruffalo! “This was a super after school event to celebrate World Book Day.

Cavalcade of vehicles to tour District’s market towns in showcase event and muscle cars, police cars and camper vans. ...I want as many of you as possible to come along and experience some of the very best of all our car events in just one day In celebration of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, the District is set to welcome a tour of some 40 special vehicles as they travel around its market towns and villages, stopping off to form a static display at various locations. Building on the success of the Piazza Italia District Tours in 2016 and 2017, the District Show-

case Tour, on Sunday 24 March 2019, will see up to 40 vehicles from five different Horsham Town events form a travelling cavalcade which will stop off in Billingshurst; Pulborough; Storrington; Steyning and Henfield in turn. It will also pass through 3 district villages. The Tour will present a truly eclectic mix of supercars, classic

AmeriCARna in September. Accompanying the Tour will be its own travelling band, The Downland Troubadours aboard a 1925 REO Speedwagon from the Les Searle collection. For the most part, static display locations will be right in the heart of each high street offering maximum opportunity for visitors to support local busi-

nesses. Each of the towns plans to welcome the tour in their own unique way. Some towns are hosting fun activities for all the family, such as the Italian market day in Storrington, along with extra food stalls and a classic car display by Storrington and District Classic and Sports Car Enthusiasts (SADCASE). There will be a French market in Steyning with street entertainers and food and drink stalls. A car themed shop window competition will be staged in Henfield High Street. Commenting on the event, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Gordon Lindsay, said: “This is something special for the Year of Culture celebrations. Hosting unique car events has certainly become both a speciality and a part of our culture in the Horsham District in recent years, so it is very fitting that we have created this special tour this year. “I hope that many local businesses across our market towns and businesses will benefit from having visitors drop in to enjoy the spectacle and the individual

events they have chosen to stage. “More than anything, I want as many of you as possible to come along and experience some of the very best of all our car events in just one day.” Horsham District Council is working collaboratively with partners across the towns including the Parish Councils, Community Partnerships, local businesses - Premier GT and Pilgrim Motorsports, SL2 Signs and enthusiast groups including SADCASE and Oddballs, to make the tour the biggest, boldest and brightest ever. The organisers are massively grateful to SERV Sussex, the blood bike charity, who will be guiding the Tour en-route, and Christ’s Hospital School and South Lodge Hotel. The Tour will be videoed and tracked on social media throughout the day by Silvertip Films and By Jove Media respectively. When Sarah Cuthbertson found out that her Sister in Law was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma she looked on in awe at how this brave Lady was tackling something so cruel. Seeing her face the evil illness with strength and bravery was something that inspired Sarah. She wanted to help raise money so that she could help find a cure but after seeing how strong her Sister in Law was, she realised that she needed to do something that would display at least a small fraction of the courage and determination shown by Natasha.

Then an idea hit her, do a firewalk, the act of walking barefoot over a bed of hot embers or stones This ritual has been practiced by many people and cultures in all parts of the world, with the earliest known reference dating back to Iron Age India. 1200 BC. It is often used as a rite of passage, as a test of an individuals strength and courage, or in religion as a test of one’s faith. The thought of walking over hot coals would fill anyone with trepidation. However, Sarah is determined to show her sister in law how much she means to her and to boost her

morale, and in doing so, give others the chance to take on this task and use it to either raise money for Myeloma UK, or any another charity close to their heart. With guidance from Irish company, ‘Firewalk International’ and suport from Shipley Primary School, where the event will be held. All aspects of the walk are now coming together. Hundreds of pounds have been raised already and 20 sign up’s made, there are still a few spaces left though. For a £40 (non refundable) fee, you will have your place reserved, receive training, have a motivational talk and have £10 donated to Myeloma UK. You can raise money for any charity you wish or just do it for your own personal sense of achievement. The day itself is more of a Family fun day though with, BBQ, Refreshments, face painting and body art from Meadow Arts, a face paint artist based in West Sussex. The event was primarily organised to support Natasha through her own personal ‘Walk’, as well in equal measures, to fund raise for Myeloma UK charity, whilst bringing friends and family together for a fun, and exciting event but it really is an open invitation to anybody for whatever reason they wish. MP opens Thakeham’s new village hall

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert cut the ribbon to open Thakeham’s new village hall at a special celebration on Friday (8 March). The MP was welcomed to the new hall by John Instance, Secretary and Treasurer of the Village Hall Trust, and his wife Caroline who is Chair of the Community Group in Thakeham. John gave Mr Herbert a tour of the new facilities prior to the official opening. Local people and councillors, including West Sussex County Councillor Pat Arculus (Pulborough Division) and Horsham District Councillors John Blackhall, Philip Circus and David Jenkins (Chactonbury Ward), turned out for the event at the new Abingworth Meadows development. John Bearman, Chairman of the Village Hall Trust, led the proceedings before leading his Thakeham Morris Men in two local dances. Councillor Peter Burgess, Chairman of Horsham District Council, gave thanks to the developers

Oakford Homes, the councils, and the community who were all represented at the event. Mr Burgess also revealed that the new hall has been shortlisted for a design award by the Royal Town Planning Institute. Mr Herbert thanked the volunteers, recognising the part they will play in looking after the hall and running the activities to help it thrive. He also spoke about the importance of village halls and the value they bring to their communities. The MP then cut the ribbon to declare the new hall open. A reception was held afterwards inside the hall where Mr Herbert spoke to many of the residents. Thakeham Village Hall Trust was first established in 1979. Their first hall was a second-hand wooden cabin, which had been adapted and extended. The new purpose-built village hall provides much more space, and is an example of how housing developers can work with a community. Mr Herbert hosted one of his regular advice surgeries in the Chesswood Room at the hall following the event. Mr Herbert said: “I was honoured to be invited to cut the ribbon to open this impressive new village hall, which will provide a wonderful space for the many clubs and activities in this busy village. It is quite right that when new housing comes new community facilities should follow, and this is a good example of the parish working together with the developer to deliver what is needed.”

Another hugely successful Equinox beer festival

After last year’s weather and travel dramas, near record numbers enjoyed another highly successful Equinox Beer and Cider festival at the Drill Hall in Horsham last weekend, organised by the North Sussex branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale. The event started this year with the unveiling of our new Cider bar, built and named in memory of one of the Festival organisers, Chris Stringer, who passed away earlier this year. Festival goers may have been surprised to see local sparkling wine from Bolney Vineyard also on sale this year. The experiment was successful, and is almost certain to be repeated for future festivals. The festival also welcomed new caterers. Garlic Wood did a great job, were very popular, and are already planning some new ideas for next year’s event.

For the first time ever, one brewery won both the Light and Dark beer of the festival awards. Horsham ale fans certainly like Dorset brewer Cerne Abbas’ beers, who not only repeated their success from last year with the Gurt Coconuts Rum Stout, but also narrowly won with their Harlequin IPA which is brewed with the rare Harlequin hop. Looks like we will need to get two casks of the Rum Stout in next year, to ensure we have some left for Saturday evening festival goers. Local brewers again scored highly in the beer of the festival voting, notably Weltons Churchillian ale, Chapeau Col Beans and Kissingate Nooksack. Voting for Cider of the festival was as close as ever, with this year’s award going to a newcomer to the area. Ray from Camrose Cider moved to Billingshurst last year and his Luvvly Jubbly medium cider lived up to its name. We again chose the Samaritans Horsham and Crawley branch to be our festival charity, and the donations of money, beer tokens and unwanted glasses raised just under £600. Their presence and support was greatly appreciated, and thanks to all who donated. As ever, huge thanks to the volunteers, sponsors, Gareth of Beer Essentials and to the pubs for selling tickets and publicity. Final thanks go to Rob at the Drill Hall for all his help over the weekend.

#1 restaurant in Billingshurst #1 Indian restaurant in Horsham District #3 Indian restaurant in West Sussex They say stats never lie and the team at Curry Village are determined to keep their growing reputation. With 63 trip advisor reviews, 62 of which are 5* and 1 of 4* accompanying the 86 reviews on Facebook that all come in at 5* it is clear to see why. The power of social media really helps drive the decisions people make and it was when I saw a post on Facebook recently where someone had asked for Indian restaurant recommendations that the idea for us to head back to Curry Village originated. The person had various replies but Curry village stood out. Not only were many people suggesting it but the venue showed more recomendations than any other. We knew we had to go back! We visited when it first opened to give it a try and after seeing it display such consistent scoring on social media as well as the well

respected trip advisor we wanted to go back to see if much had changed. I am pleased to say it hasn’t, from the warm greeting when we arrive through to the pleasant farewell when we leave, every part of the visit stood out and with a new menu due to be rolled out in the next 4-5months it may well have been our last chance to sample the current selection. I went with a soft shell crab to start with followed by a Dalcha Lamb, two dishes that you will not spot in your traditional Indian restaurant. Both presented beautifully with flavours that lept off the plate, accompanying this with some pilau rice and a beer was a wise choice but it would be no surprise if you are looking at the menu again trying to pick what you may want next time you visit. Only open for 5 months this gem of a restaurant has continued to impress customers both new and old with its wide variety of Indian dishes-get over there and experience something different!

Our relationship with Horsham Sports Club goes back many years and we have always been proud to be associated with it. We never expected this though-thanks to the work of Sussex Seniors cricket team, our surplus kit from a few seasons back now adorns the National Cricket team in The Gambia! Whilst not only providing the kit, the seniors also passed on some coaching to the players!

Horsham District Council backs the Busy diary of events for District CouncilChairman 2019 Great British Spring Clean

Horsham District Council is backing a national campaign to get half a million people out and about cleaning up their local communities, from 22 March to 23 April this year, as part of The Great British Spring Clean. Local parishes and community groups are being encouraged to take part and the Council is sup-

porting groups who want to ‘do their bit’ to help clear up the litter through the council’s Adopt a Street initiative, providing litter picking equipment and extra support. How to get involved: If you would like to do something special in the Horsham District this year and take part in the Great

British Spring Clean, please contact Horsham District Council’s Adopt a Street team. The team provides the loan of specialist equipment including pick up sticks, bin bags and high viz jackets. But hurry – the equipment supply is limited and they are only available on a first come, first served basis. This campaign builds on the success started with 2016’s Clean for the Queen national clean-up and The Great British Spring Clean is now an annual national spring clean event helping to bring people together and improve the environment on their doorstep. Cllr Philip Circus, Cabinet Member for Waste, Recycling and Cleansing at Horsham District Council, said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean once again and we encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part and join the national army of #LitterHeroes, who have had enough of other people’s litter and are willing to do something about it. The hall was built as part of the new housing developments in the village which include some 159 houses, including affordable homes and homes for local workers, a community hall, football and cricket pitches, a large shop, a preschool and retention of the local mushroom factory, all situated in attractive grounds. The hall was officially opened by Nick Herbert MP. Cllr Burgess delivered a speech emphasizing the excellent work Horsham District Council’s Strategic Planning team had done in creating the development which has been nominated for a national planning award. Annual General Meeting of the Twinning Association in the Park Barn, North Street, Horsham, on the evening of 8 March, conducting the meeting until the Chairman, James Prentice was re-elected. A major highlight this year for the Twinning Association is a visit in May of residents of our German twin town, Lage. Cllr Burgess spent the morning of Saturday 9 March at the Rikkyo School, Rudgwick for their graduation ceremony. He presented the Ambassador prize for the two students who have made the most effective contribution to local and community events. Cllr Burgess extended the Council’s best wishes to the Headmaster, Mr Sato, as he is about to leave the school. after several years of service, for a new position in Japan.

Collyer’s Employability students have been put through their paces with mock interviews by top experts from Assurity Consulting. Lucy Hargreaves, Employability Co-ordinator at the Ofsted Outstanding Sixth Form College, explained: “Working from real job descriptions, the group have followed the process of researching the company and job role, completing an application, and submitting a CV and covering letter. Assurity’s Ian Robinson has also been running some brilliant sessions with our students over the last few months to prepare them for the big day. “After all the preparation and research, they were then finally put through the rigours of a mock interview by senior staff from Assurity.” Assurity’s Sarah Cross, Thomas

Nicklin, Victoria Teer and Jo Thomas posed the questions and also took time to judge performances in several awards categories. Joint winners of the Best Interviews were Gethin Pickering and Jose Hammant; Best CV and Covering Letter was won by Erin Ross, while Best Dressed Prize went to Harry Weston. Best Question to the Interview Panel was awarded to Katie Kennett. Sarah, Thomas, Victoria and Jo kindly spent time with each student to talk through the concept of a job interview, and after the mocks, they spoke to the students individually, to provide feedback on their performance and advise on areas they may wish to work on before seeking employment. The feedback from the candidates was very positive. Alfie Edwards said: “I feel a lot more

confident going for real interviews now I have had this experience. The Assurity experts were helpful, friendly and gave great advice. The Employability course has been great.” During the day, the students also gained an insight into an interviewer’s perspective, as Ian Robinson gave top-tips about what they look for in candidates, how to stand out from the crowd, methods to build rapport, and practical advice on building CV’s. Lucy Hargreaves said: “All of the students interviewed today clearly have huge potential and it was very much about making the best of the talent our young people have got and helping them develop it!” Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, who teaches the Employability course, added: “Assurity Consulting have been huge supporters of our Employability work and Ian Robinson’s taught sessions have been inspirational. He is genuinely one of the good guys and we can’t thank him enough. “The students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and through a practical exercise picked up a tremendous amount about the world of work. “Massive thanks to all of the Assurity Consulting team for giving up their valuable time and helping the next generation.” Lucy Hargreaves added: “We are really proud of these students. Great attendance at Horsham Apprenticeship Fair 2019 Some 1000 people visited Horsham’s Apprenticeship Fair, which took place at the Drill Hall, Horsham on Saturday 9 March. Fifty exhibitors, including apprentice employers, training providers, colleges, and universities, provided information and advice as well as over 500 opportunities on the day. There were some major employers from the local area, including Gatwick Airport, Sussex Police, AJW and Nestlé, as well as some new companies offering apprenticeships for the first time. The event, organised by Horsham District Council, in partnership with West Sussex County Council, aimed once again to provide a platform for anyone wanting to find out about apprenticeships and the wide ranging types and levels of opportunities being offered. With Horsham District Council now offering its own significant apprenticeship programme, it is in a strong position to help promote the increasing value of apprenticeships to local businesses. Indeed, the Council had six of its own apprentices on duty on the day to help

with managing the event. Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Gordon Lindsay, attended the event and was extremely impressed by the exhibitors and the numbers attending: “There was a good cross section of businesses represented at the fair and it is a sign of the times that there are so many more opportunities with top employers - not only for young people not wanting to go to university, but also for more mature workers wanting to change their career path or upskill themselves. “I was impressed with the number of young people there and also just how many parents attended, finding out about new career and training opportunities that do not involve university.” The next employment event organised by Horsham District Council will be the Jobs and Skills Fair to be held in the Drill Hall on Saturday 28 September. the ‘Covers Acts’ and ‘Original Bands’ finals on 17 August, which will, once again, take place on a big festival stage in the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park. WWII Songs and Sketches at The Unitarian Church The spirit which sustained Britain throughout WWII is set to be recaptured in the revue ‘Keep Smiling Through’, scheduled for performance at Horsham’s Unitarian Church venue on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 March. Featuring Horsham’s Unity Players, the show aims to recreate in film, songs and sketches the personalities, the music and the comedy which boosted morale and kept our nation going through the “finest hour” when it stood alone, and on to ultimate victory. Commenting on the show’s planning, Unity Player’s director, Barbara Meaghan, explained: “For those with memories of the war years, we hope this will be a

show of uplifting nostalgia, but we have also worked to make it sufficiently lively and entertaining to please a younger audience. English Chamber Orchestra, Christ’s Hospital’s Professional Orchestra-in-Partnership An exciting new collaboration has been created between Christ’s Hospital School and the London-based English Chamber Orchestra. The ECO is one of the finest professional orchestras in the country and one of the most recorded in the world. Their catalogue includes the famous cycles of Mozart piano concertos with Daniel Barenboim and Murray Perahia. The orchestra has also established an outreach programme, Close Encounters, to share music and build relationships with schools and communities in the UK and abroad. Christ’s Hospital was founded by Edward VI in 1552 to take the poor children from the streets of London and provide shelter and education for them, principles which endure to this day. Inspired by the CH mission to offer the finest educational opportunities to young people from all backgrounds, former pupil Fabio Sarlo (ECO’s Orchestra Manager) and Alex Hodgkinson (Director of Music at CH) have worked together to plan a two-day ‘residency’ in March 2019, allowing Christ’s Hospital pupils to benefit directly from the expertise,

experience, enthusiasm of the visiting ECO players. The musicians will fulfil several roles during their time at CH: they will give one-toone lessons to senior pupils, including the concerto soloists; they will lead rehearsals with the Symphony Orchestra, allowing the pupil musicians to hear a new voice and offering them a new way to think about the music they are playing; and they will play side-byside with pupils in the school Symphony Orchestra in the Angus Ross Gala Concert. This concert, which will take place at Christ’s Hospital on Sunday 24 March 2019, will feature a varied programme, including music by Copland, Brahms, Vivaldi, Michael Nyman, and conclude with an abridged performance of Handel’s evergreen Messiah, featuring Christ’s Hospital Chapel Choir, Choral Society, and the CH Sinfonia. Dan Snow ‘the History Guy’ believes that history is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to anyone on this planet

and in his best-selling show at The Hawth, An Evening With The History Guy, the historian and broadcaster will be telling

audiences why. Dan, who runs his own online TV Channel, History Hit TV (https://tv.historyhit.com/) and has a regular history slot on The One Show, will share memorable anecdotes from his career. Audiences are in for an additional treat, as every show on the tour will have its own exclusive ‘local’ element that will see Dan present historical facts about each town and area. There will also be a chance at the end of the show to engage with Dan during a 20 minute Q&A session. Dan’s tales will be enhanced with compelling digital imagery. The son of legendary broadcaster, Peter Snow, and the nephew of Channel 4 newsreader, Jon Snow, Dan is the great great grandson of British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. Attributing his love of history to his childhood when

he recalls spending weekends being taken to castles, battlefields, country houses and churches, Dan went onto study History at Oxford University. During his time at Oxford he also rowed in the Boat Race three times! When Dan left Oxford, he started presenting history programmes with his father and their series ‘Battlefield Britain’ went on to win a BAFTA. Over the years, Dan has made programmes on a number of historical topics and has presented shows such as Armada, Grand Canyon and Vikings. Dan also hosts his own podcast ‘History Hit’ and is part of the BBC Events team presenting anniversary programmes commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and the landings at Gallipoli in 2015. Back by popular demand Strictly Vintage 1940s and 1950s Style Tea Dance

The Team at local, independent charity Age UK Horsham District are delighted to announce that their successful 1940s/’50s style Tea Dance ‘Strictly Vintage’ is back by popular demand, returning to The Drill Hall in Horsham during the afternoon of Saturday 30 March 2019. Over the last five years, the event, which has attracted guests of all ages and dancing abilities dressed in fabulous fashions of the era, has grown in popularity. It is hoped that this year’s event will, again, attract a broad audience who will be treated to a wonderful afternoon of 1940s and 1950s music and a delicious afternoon tea served on vintage china. Dance tunes will be provided by The Royal British Legion ‘Legionnaires’ Dance Band. Sonia Mangan, Chief Executive Officer for Age UK Horsham District, said: “Last year, the Tea Dance raised over £2,000 to help support our work with older people across the Horsham District

and we are really hoping that this year we can raise even more – it would be great to sell-out!!” The event is being organised by Age UK Horsham District’s Fundraising Team and wouldn’t be possible without the support of their wonderful staff and volunteers. Sonia added: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Dark Star Foundation, the charitable arm of the Partridge Green brewery, who have provided funds to cover the majority of the costs of the Tea Dance, we are very grateful to them for enabling us to run this popular event once again. Horsham look forward to Saturday after tough run Saturday March 9 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Wimbledon 4 0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their last two matches Horsham, in the process of rebuilding, have had the misfortune to come up against the top two teams in the league – first against Hampstead & Westminster, then, last Saturday they visited Kingston Grammar School to take on Wimbledon, another big London club. In October’s home fixture against Wimbledon Horsham Ladies battled hard, but were overturned 1-3 and on Saturday it was another

tough examination, two goals in each half giving Wimbledon a strong win – as the Wombling song had it: “Wombles are organised, work as a team.” This Saturday, in their penultimate home league game of the season, the Ladies have the far more comfortable prospect of welcoming Ipswich - to Christ’s Hospital at 14.30. In November’s corresponding away fixture, Horsham beat the Suffolk side 4-2 and, from their 15 matches, Ipswich have salvaged just one draw, scoring only 5 goals this season and conceding 51, both the worst statistics in the league. Horsham are now eighth in the table while Hampstead & Westminster are top with 38 points, two clear of Wimbledon.

Horsham beat leaders but lose to wooden spoonists Saturday March 9 – South League – Premier – Division 2 Woking Men’s 1st XI 3 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter It is the vagaries of sport that intrigue, and while nobody likes their team to lose, sport would be deadly dull if it were predictable, and if the unexpected fascinates then Horsham Men’s Hockey 1st team are the side to watch. On March 2nd they did something that no other team in the league had achieved – they beat runaway leaders Guildford. So, after a difficult season, surely the tide had turned? If Horsham can beat high flying Guildford then they can beat anybody – especially the bottom team, Woking, the lowest scoring team in the league, whom Horsham had put six goals past in November’s home win? Not so. Whether it was a touch of complacency or just knowing that they are safe from relegation, or a bit of both, is for conjecture, but last Saturday Horsham became only Woking’s second victim of the season, Match Day Coach Brian Humphreys telling the District Post: “We conceded two goals through poor defensive discipline, but once we

woke up we were a different side and Peter Neave scored, scrambling the ball in from a short corner just before half time. In the second half we played well, Jean Marshall getting an open play goal to level the score. Then, unaccountably, our performance dropped again and we stopped passing, which we normally do so well. We were dribbling too much and when we gave them possession yet again they scored the winner. It was a case of them having something to play for and we didn’t.” With just two league games left Guildford top the table with 49 points, five ahead of Trojans, who have a game in hand. Horsham are ninth on 20 points, one clear of Staines, while Slough (11) occupy the penultimate berth, four points to the good over Woking, who have played a game less. This Saturday in their last home game – at Christ’s Hospital with a noon push back – Horsham welcome mid table Blackheath & Elthamians, to whom they lost 2-1 at Mottingham’s London Marathon Sports Ground earlier in the season. For their final league fixture (March 23) Horsham travel to south east London’s Bermondsey to take on London Academicals, aiming to avenge the home defeat suffered in December.

Horsham crush Dover with explosive early blast Saturday March 9 – London 2 South East Dover 21 69 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s long trip to Dover was rewarded by their sixth 50+ league win of the season, during which they have also inflicted two half century cup defeats. The Kent win was Horsham’s eighth consecutive victory – seven in the league and one in the cup – making them the highest scoring team in the league with 734 points. And, Horsham’s current runner up position was improved by third in the table Charlton Park losing against the odds away to lowly Deal & Betteshanger, just along the coast. Leaders Beckenham also lost – only their second reverse of the season, but remain seven points clear of Horsham, who have a three point advantage over Charlton. Last Saturday Horsham sailed home with their first win at the Crabble ground, where Hutton, Trueman, Compton, Edrich, Sobers and an array of top international cricketers competed, Kent County Cricket Club previously using the venue as a much-loved outground for many years. In their glory years Dover RFC graced higher leagues, but, despite injury depletions, rampaging Horsham posted five tries and three conversions in the opening quarter of an hour, fatally wounding the hosts before they had had a chance to respond, Kyle Fairs starting the rout straight from the off. Sam Hampson then got over ahead of Fairs thrusting through for his second, Mathieu Pecharman adding two more tries, the second resulting from his long, blistering run, and when Joe Wilde completed a hat trick of conversions, the Green & Whites were 31 nil up. And, things soon got even better, Emmet O’Rahilly and Vince Everitt compounding

To Dover’s credit, they kept competing, scoring three second half tries, but Hampson and Jonny Whiting also both got over the line for Horsham, signing off the substantial win, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “We started brightly and killed the game off in the first quarter, the challenge for the team being to maintain focus and play to our patterns. On the whole this was achieved, although we did occasionally become loose. Our pace caused problems all day and we managed to keep the ball alive when in attack, leading to some excellent team tries. Play-

ers stepping up in the absence of regular first team starters all did extremely well, notably Josh Earle and Luke Powell, and O’Rahilly and Everitt were a handful, too. However, despite good performances from Nick Bell, Wilde, Marcus Condon, Jamie Redmayne and Adam Clarkson, Man of the Match goes to Kyle Fairs for his outstanding all round showing. After a weekend break we head into the final three league matches of the season with a tough home game against Haywards Heath (5th after beating Beckenham last week).” The Haywards Heath game on the 23rd is a league and Bob Rogers Cup double header.

YMCA go second with fifth consecutive league win Saturday March 9 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 4 1 Arundel Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Honestly and truthfully, without a word of a lie, this reporter avoids clichés like the plague, but this was a game of two halves. Earlier in the season YMCA had beaten struggling Arundel twice at Mill Road - in the Peter Bentley Cup and in the league - but in the first half last Saturday (YM’s first appearance at Gorings Mead for three weeks), it was stalemate with little to choose between the two sides. The second half, though, was a completely different story with

YM bossing the game from the restart, with the gulf between the two sides underlined by their positions in the table. After a highly disappointing run of nine games, delivering just two wins and two draws, earning eight points out of a possible 27, YM’s push for promotion is firmly back on track with their fifth straight win. But, last Saturday the game started scrappily, each side earning corners, bringing the respective keepers – YM’s Aaron Jeal and Arundel’s Dan Stevens - into play, Jeal finger-tipping a threat away before the somewhat more dangerous looking Arundel fired across the goal with nobody able to make contact. YM’s best chance came when a breakaway supplied Leon Eales with the ball, but he could only blaze over, the first half.

season’s play offs – Horsham were nevertheless disappointed to end their seven match undefeated run and come away empty handed, especially as they beat Cray earlier in the season, inflicting the Kent side’s only league defeat of this campaign. Unbeaten at their Hayes Lane fortress, Cray have only conceded three draws there and their home and away scoring aggregate is 63 goals, with 22 against – both by far the best stats in the Bostik South East Division. Elsewhere,

fellow promotion contenders Hastings and Ashford United both won, narrowing the gap at the top of the table, but Horsham remain second, five points clear of Ashford and seven ahead of Hastings, both of whom have a game in hand. Last Saturday, though, was a difficult day for the Hornets, an injury restricting Lewis Hyde’s participation and a red card depriving them of the services of Dan Pearse for half of the second session. But, they started brightly, Harvey Sparks twice testing Nick Blue in the home goal, the keeper subsequently thwarting Rob O’Toole’s close quarter attempt, Hornet keeper Josh Pelling also having to be alert to quell a Ben Mundele strike. Horsham were giving as good as they got, but Cray took the lead when a well-built incursion enabled Hudson to slot home. Horsham responded, earning a corner, O’Toole’s header was safely gathered by Blue, while Pelling negated a free kick at the other end, Horsham trailing by the single goal at the break. The second half started with both sides creating chances, Horsham might have equalised, Blue again keeping the Hornets at bay. But, Cray kept pressing and when Joe Shelley challenged Dent the midfielder was floored with the ref not hesitating to point to the spot, from where Joe Taylor doubled Cray’s lead. Undaunted, Horsham responded, but Cray’s defence kept them out before Pearse was dismissed for a too-robust tackle on Frederico. Sparks and Lee Harding posed danger, but again without success, ahead of Cray’s chance of a third goal being extinguished by an off side call. Mounting frustration led to both Harding and Hayward receiving yellow cards as Cray continued to push, but opportunities came and went for both sides with the hosts triumphing 2-0. On Saturday, with seven games remaining, Horsham have a less formidable encounter, with a visit to bottom club Greenwich Borough, whom they beat 2-0 at Lancing in November. Meanwhile, the Hornets’ long awaited new Hop Oast ground is looking increasingly like the impressive venue that it will certainly become. YMCA post three goal lead and then hold off Loxwood Tuesday March 5 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Loxwood 2 3 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA won this game fair and square, completing the double over Loxwood this season, but having scored three times in quick succession in the first half to lead by a street, they then made slightly heavy weather of the hard fought win, Loxwood clawing back a goal either side of the break. The first goal of the match came on 25 minutes when a free kick into the box was headed down by Guy Harding for Dean Bown to pounce and score from close range. Five minutes later Alex Barbary turned and volleyed the ball into the net direct from Luke Gedling’s corner. And, it promptly got better when prolific again Bown dispossessed a Loxwood player on the edge of the area, shooting home fiercely.

YM were in full command and it was only a minor inconvenience when Loxwood broke away and the attack was not cut out, allowing Mark Goldson to get his team on the scoreboard just before the break. When, soon after the restart, Godson latched onto a YM header, crashing into the roof of the net alarm bells rang, the substantial lead having suddenly become just a narrow advantage, but an equaliser eluded Loxwod, YM keeping their composure to successfully close down the game after a series of substitutions. The only blemish was the very late yellow cards awarded to Bown and YM keeper Aaron Jeal – the latter for time wasting at the death. By their own admission, Loxwood were under par in the first half, YM Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “Yes, Loxwood were a better team after the interval, but we still created chances – sub Leon Eales twice going close. We could easily have won 4-2.”

Heath cast Shoreham adrift Saturday March 9 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 4 0 Shoreham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath despatched 18th placed Shoreham with ease last Saturday, avenging their 2-0 defeat by the seasiders in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round at the Leisure Centre last August, and elevating Heath up to sixth. Keeper Kieron Thorp re-joined the team, but injuries to skipper Tom Bold, and Devon Fender prevented them from starting, while newly signed Michael Dale and Mason Doughty were in the dugout with deputy keeper Conor Evento and Dane Riecker. With the wind at their backs, Heath took an early lead when Jamie Taylor got through to supply George Cousins, who converted the opportunity into the corner of the goal. Maintaining possession, Heath created chances for Ollie Moore, Dean Wright,

Taylor and Cousins, but Shoreham keeper Broadbent prevented further damage, until, mid way through the half, Moore doubled Heath’s lead from the spot after Taylor had been fouled in the area, the score remaining 2-0 in Heath’s favour at the break. On the re-start, assisted by the elements, Shoreham pressed forward, occupying Heath’s half, but Heath regained the initiative and when Ryan Brackpool maximised Andy Waddington’s centre the result was put beyond all doubt, if that was not already the case. But, Heath were still not quite done – Cousins’ shot was denied by the woodwork before sub Doughty cleanly added Heath’s fourth goal. However, Heath are likely to be subjected to a stiffer examination on Saturday when fourth in the table Eastbourne Town visit with Heath looking to prevent Town completing a double after losing 3-2 at the Saffrons five months ago. Then, the business end of the season hots up even further with a trip to Newhaven (third), to whom Heath lost 3-1 at home in September.
