On both days, alongside the cars and bikes, there will be a fantastic selection of Italian food, drink and themed entertainments – which, this year, have been bolstered by Horsham District’s Year of Culture programme. Entertainers over the two days include English National Opera star Jo Appleby performing as a duet on Easter Monday, roving singers and accordion players, and the amazing Hetty and the Jazzato Band as Monday’s bandstand

A new public art project “Field Notes from Warnham” which is part of Horsham District Council’s 2019 Horsham District Year of Culture celebrations, came to life last weekend at Warnham Local Nature Reserve. The project, led by Alison Turnbull, has been developed with writer–in–residence Tanya Shadrick and public artist Will Nash. Visitors have, over a period of months, actively contributed their ideas to writer Tanya, who is bringing the written word to the Reserve. Tanya has been busy meeting visitors to capture their thoughts, words and stories about the flora, fauna and general ambience of this special place. As the legacy of this project, public artist Will Nash will be creating pieces of sculptural art which will, when completed, be installed within the Reserve. As part of a 10 day exhibition running from 13 April to 24 April, scale models of the proposed sculptures are being displayed and visitors are invited to share their views and highlight their preferred options.
Will’s works have been inspired by both the microscopic lifeforms, which create the diversity of habitat at the site, and from the industrial heritage that forms the Reserve’s history. Chairman of the Friends of Warnham Local Nature Reserve, John Wilks, said: “It has been great to see so many friends and visitors coming along to the Reserve to share their views on both the written work and sculptural projects that the Reserve has inspired.” The Council’s Countryside and Ecology Manager, Jake Everitt, added: “As we prepare for the annual children’s Easter Trail, taking place from Good Friday to Bank Holiday Monday, we hope many more people will come along and share their thoughts with us, contributing to what I am sure will be an amazing display of public art sculptures.” As a culmination of the exhibition, Will will be at the Reserve hosting an informal question and answer session on Wednesday 24 April, between 2pm and 3pm. West Sussex wheelchair user Edward to take part in The London Marathon Local man Edward BridgerStille is taking part in the London Marathon for Aspire, a national charity that provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury. less than two years after he sustained a spinal cord injury whilst putting up some fairy lights for Christmas 2017. Consequently, he found himself in hospital, where “I spent the next seven months quietly realising that that I would never walk again.” Edward says, “This was a massive blow but the support I had from my family and friends has been beyond extraordinary. The nursing staff at Brighton and the Spinal Injury Centre at Salisbury were, quite frankly, magical. Life continues and for me, my wife is everything. I owe a debt to her and my children (and spaniels) without whose unfaltering support, I certainly would not have made it this far.” This will be a huge challenge for Edward, who has never taken part in a marathon before. The only event he has done previously is a Tough Mudder which he found extremely difficult. In fact, most of his family fell over laughing when he said he was thinking about doing a marathon! He says, “I wanted to take part in the London Marathon to raise money for Aspire because six people every day are told they
will never walk again and Aspire is there to help pick up the pieces of their lives. They help many people when they come out of hospital, which is always a very vulnerable time. When I was in hospital I spoke with one of their Independent Living Advisors, who gave me invaluable advice and support.” Edward’s fundraising has been going so well that he keeps having to raise his target and has so far raised over £6,000 to help people with Spinal Cord Injury. Edward aims to raise £7,000. To sponsor him please go to https://uk.virginmoneygiving. com/EdwardBridgerStille Andrew Ogierman, Aspire’s Challenge Events Manager, says, “Our 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon runners have worked really hard over the last few months to ensure they are ready for their big day on the streets of London. Whilst preparing to run - or wheel - the 26.2 miles to The Mall, they have also raised a huge amount of money to
support people with spinal cord injuries, making a real difference to people’s lives. It has been a pleasure to support them, answer questions, calm nerves and ensure they enjoy their day in the spotlight. They should all be very proud of what they have and will achieve.”

Steyning Author bags two-book publishing deal
Steyning author, Wendy Clarke, is celebrating the launch of her debut novel after clinching a two-book deal with publisher Bookouture. What She Saw, the first of two psychological thrillers, is about a
woman called Leona who for the last twelve years, has been trying to provide a normal life for her daughter, Beth. All is well until she thinks she sees Ria – the woman who nearly destroyed her life before. Scared the same thing will happen again, she turns to a councillor for help. Meanwhile, Beth is fighting her own demons and when she learns the devastating truth her mother’s been keeping from her, her actions unleash a chain of events that could put them all in danger. Wendy’s novel is set in The Lake District, an area of the country she tries to visit as much of possible: “I chose this area because of its beautiful, dramatic and ever-changing landscape. It’s the perfect scenery for building suspense.” Although What She Saw is Wendy’s debut novel, she is not new to writing. With over three hundred short stories published in national women’s magazines,
such as The People’s Friend and Woman’s Weekly, why the change of direction? Wendy explained: “I’ve loved writing for the magazines, but these are gentle stories. With a degree in psychology, and an interest in how the human mind can affect behaviour, I thought it might be interesting to explore a darker side to my writing.” The second of Wendy’s novels, We Were Sisters, will be published in August and is set in a fictitious village very similar to her home town of Steyning. What She Saw will be published by Bookouture in ebook, paperback and audio on 1 May. It will be available from The Steyning Bookshop as well as Amazon, Apple and Googleplay. Star-studded theatre debut for Horsham boy 12-year-old Ruari Finnegan, who is from Faygate near Horsham, has landed a starring role in the award-winning play Shadowlands at Chichester Festival Theatre. Ruari, a Year 7 pupil at Christ’s Hospital, will be playing C.S. Lewis’s stepson Douglas, opposite Hugh Bonneville and Liz White, in William Nicholson’s much-loved play. The play will be running from 26 April to 26 May, with Ruari sharing the role of Douglas and acting in half of the eight performances per week. Rather surprisingly, this is not the first time Ruari has worked with Hugh Bonneville; just last November, Hugh gave a drama masterclass at Christ’s Hospital, in which Ruari took part and was lucky enough to receive Hugh’s expert coaching and acting tips. “I performed a monologue from Shakespeare’s Richard III, which was quite daunting,” said Ruari of the drama masterclass, “It was an amazing experience to get feedback and encouragement from a famous actor like Hugh Bonneville! His advice was really helpful in looking at scripts in a different way. At our first rehearsal for Shadowlands in London, he joked that he wanted my autograph!” As the Shadowlands role involves acting Douglas between the ages of eight and eleven, Ruari was asked to switch between the two ages in his audition to see if he could “get” the different layers of maturity. He explained: “Douglas and his mother move away from his father who is an alcoholic, so he has a lot of sadness in his life, which I have to try and show.” As if this wasn’t challenging enough, Ruari is acting in several scenes of the play, so he has a lot of stage directions, as well as lines, to remember: “I’m lucky because I only need to read a page of lines five times or so to learn them. I get nervous sometimes, but once I’m on the stage I’m fine and I like to see people’s faces and reactions rather than shut them out.” He also has to be on stand-by in case he is needed for rehearsals at short notice (one of the requirements for the part was that the young actor should live no further than an hour’s drive away from the theatre (Ruari lives 58 minutes away).
Ruari has been acting since he can remember, joining various drama groups and taking part in drama festivals. Since joining Christ’s Hospital in September on a drama scholarship, he has wholeheartedly embraced all the many opportunities on offer: “I came to an open day at Christ’s Hospital and after that it was the only school I wanted to go to. “I saw all the sports fields and the amazing theatre and was very excited about going to school here. I also came to see The Crucible (a theatre production) before I started at CH and I realised how good the drama is here and how seriously it’s taken. My drama teachers here are all so supportive and enthusiastic – I’ve already had the chance of being in LAMDA and school productions and I’m really looking forward to taking part in big school productions, such as the junior production of Rumpelstiltskin in the summer term. “It’s brilliant having a real theatre at school where we can learn and improve. The technical team can change the layout and appearance of the stage in any which way we want to suit the performance. The days at CH mean I can fit drama in to my school timetable without affecting other lesson time. I think drama skills help in other lessons with presentations and speeches; for instance, although I find English hard, drama has been a huge help to me to present my pieces without nerves.” Ruari continued: “So far in my acting career, I’ve had the pleasure of eating cheesy biscuits with Inspector Thursday (Roger Allam, a former Christ’s Hospital pupil), a Belgian bun with C.S. Lewis (Hugh Bonneville), and Christmas cake with Barry and Honey from Eastenders (Shaun Williamson and Emma Barton).” The young actor has also just finished shooting two commercials, for Aldi and McDonald’s. In the future, he would ideally like to be a film actor and, with his quiet confidence, likeable persona and humbling drive, this dream seems wholly achievable. Horsham community cook gets a little help from Jamie Oliver
Joanne Shanley, a community cook from the Jack and Jill Preschool, has learned how to make the most of surplus food donations and minimise food waste after taking part in the Tesco Community Cookery School with Jamie Oliver. Jack and Jill Preschool, in Horsham, is one of 7,000 charities and community groups to receive free surplus food from Tesco stores, via food distribution charity Fareshare, under the supermarket’s Community Food Connection scheme.
The Tesco cookery school, launched in January of this year, helps to provide the community cooks with the food knowledge to make use of whatever is in the donations that arrive at their kitchen door – whether it is a bumper donation of seasonal produce or more unexpected ingredients. During the course, cooks learn everything from knife skills and nutrition to recipes for versatile base sauces, which can be adapted to compliment a wide variety of donated food. Training is free and attendees receive cooking equip-
ment, plus a folder of Jamie’s Oliver’s recipes. Speaking after completing the course, Joanne said: “It was good fun and some of the tips about nutrition were really helpful. I will now be able to use the skills and knowledge I learned to benefit the children here at the preschool.” Jamie Oliver said: “This is exactly what this programme is all about – learning new skills in the kitchen that can be passed on, all while helping to fight food waste. “We want to give loads more amazing community cooks the confidence to create delicious, balanced meals from food that would otherwise have been thrown away. It’s about empowering charities with the knowledge and tools they need to help those who need it the most.” Tesco is planning to train 1,000 community cooks through the Tesco Community Cookery School in 2019, with many cooks already signed up in West Sussex. Martyn Lee, Tesco Development Chef, said: “Tesco has donated more than 60 million meals’ worth of surplus food to date, but it wouldn’t have reached those in need of a good meal were it not for local community cooks like Joanne. I hope that Joanne took away a lot from the course and will put their new-found cooking knowledge to good use, while continuing her great work at the Jack and Jill Preschool.”

Warning as Fraudsters Target South East Students’ Final Loan Instalments The Student Loans Company (SLC) is warning all students in the South East to be on their guard and not be tricked into disclosing any financial details or clicking on links in emails or text messages, as they could be installing malware on their systems. Fraudsters often target students with bogus emails and SMS around the three loan instalment periods in September, January and April each year. Fiona Innes, Head of Counter Fraud Services at the Student Loans Company, said: “We want to remind customers that we will never request a customer’s personal or banking details by email or text message. “Anyone who receives a scam email about student finance should send it to us at phishing@slc.co.uk, as this allows us to close the site down and stop students from being caught out. The Student Loans Company administers student finance on behalf of the Government and devolved administrations across the UK. In the last two years, SLC’s Counter Fraud Services team stopped over half a million pounds of student funding being stolen through phishing scams and in the last financial year alone, the team prevented £13.2 million of taxpayers’ money
from being paid out by identifying fraudulent activity. Spotting a phishing email isn’t always easy but the Student Loans Company has five fraud facts to help: • Be suspicious of any requests for personal or financial information. SLC or Student Finance England (SFE) will never ask you to confirm your bank details or login information by email. • Phishing emails are often sent in bulk and are unlikely to contain both your first and last name; they commonly start, ‘Dear Student’. • Check the quality of the communication - misspelling, poor punctuation and bad grammar are often tell-tale signs of phishing. • ‘Failure to respond in 24 hours will result in your account being closed’ these types of messages are designed to convey a sense of urgency to prompt a quick response. • Anyone who receives a suspicious email they think may be a scam should send it to phishing@slc.co.uk. SLC can investigate the site and ensure it is shut down, to help protect other students. We can help save the Bees!
Brits have been urged to protect buzzing bees to avoid splashing out billions trying to fill the gap in our ecosystem years down the line. Outdoors experts at GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk have compiled a helpful guide, encouraging green fingered homeowners to do their part in protecting these important insects. Bees and other pollinating bugs play a vital role in our ecosystems, as a third of all consumed food is dependent on them. The world has seen a slow but steady decline in number of bees since the 90s due to the widespread use of toxic pesticides, which can’t differentiate between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ insects. Climate change has also dealt a devastating blow to the global bee population, as some species don’t cope well with very hot temperatures – they literally overheat. Pollinating by hand is an arduous task which could cost UK
farmers over a billion pounds yearly, leading to a huge increase in food costs that are also low quality and filled with chemicals. A spokesperson for GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk explained: “The role of bees within our eco-system is incredibly important and the worldwide decline we have seen is cause for serious concern. “Every single Brit should do their part, no matter how small, in cultivating the population of our buzzing friends, as without them our ecosystem would literally fall apart. “By following our simple guide and ingraining a few key steps into our lifestyle, you can make the world of difference.” Here is GardenBuildingsDirect. co.uk ’s guide on how to save the bees: 1. Picking plants Certain plants are much more likely to attract our bees to the garden, so do some research before you plant to find the perfect match. Lavender, oregano and basil all produce lots of nectar and will be covered in happy, hungry bees. 2. Avoid pesticide The majority of insects are not harmful and there is no place for industrial chemicals in the garden, as some pesticides will remain embedded into the soil
affecting other wildlife in the long term. Green fingered Brits should always be wary of using the toxins even for casual use unless absolutely necessary. 3. Choosing honey Only purchase raw and locally made honey. This will encourage those producing honey to shift their focus and energy towards ensuring that honey is produced ethically. 4. Do not weed Weeds can be a nuisance however they do have their purpose. Plants such as dandelions are a brilliant source of food for bees, especially in early spring as there is only a limited range of sources available. 5. Quenching thirst Even those with limited space can do their part by installing a small water basin for bees to satisfy thirst during the heights of summer. Just remember to add a couple of stones and floating objects such as a cork so the bees don’t drown. 6. Keeping the bees For Brits who really want to invest in saving bees, they could look at picking up a new hobby – beekeeping. Do plenty of research and ensure preparation is done beforehand. Give bees a home and produce organic and locally made honey for all to enjoy.

Black Rose Barbers: ‘Old school with a modern venue and attitude’
russ bedford The brainchild of lifelong Horsham resident Joseph Stevens, Black Rose barbers on East Street is the culmination of 6 years worth of learning, experiences and determination. After opening in August 2018 Joseph has been striving to make his mark in this fiercly tough industry. Originally renting a space in a
barbers and signing up to training all over the UK, Joseph has found himself learning from the best in the Country, “I paid to go on as many courses as I could. I went to Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol amongst others, I really wanted to learn as much as I could, it became and still is such a passion of mine” he says. When you arrive at Black Rose you instantly sense the atmosphere is a relaxed one. Greeted as if you have known the team for ages, it’s an easy going environment, you almost feel as if you could just turn up for a chat with the guys rather than get a haircut,
“Thats exactly it,” says Joseph, “We get people who may have had their haircut just last week turn up to take a seat and have a chat with us, we have built such a good rapport with our customers that I think people really see us as a team they feel comfortable around. “ This is even evident when Joseph takes a call from someone looking to book an appointment, speaking with his client as if they are good mates yet keeping it professional enough to make sure no detail is missed, it is clear his customers mean a lot, “To me there are three things that are really important, service, care and precision. They are the three foundations of what I want to build. I am attempting to pay homage to the service that was a really key feature of old school barbers but fuse it with a modern yet contemporary venue and attitude.” You look around the barbers and it almost doesn’t look like one, I feel there should be a word for the style it incorporates but can’t find one, “it is a style you cant pigeon hole because its a fusion of my passions and interests both in and outside of the hair industry.
I wanted to create an environment in which people would feel comfortable and relaxed.” “We also like to team up with local creative people. Dan Courteney-Smith from the amazing Altered Wings tattoo studio helped design our hoodies, for example. If we can work with fel-
..I really wanted to learn as much as I could, it became and still is such a passion of mine.. low creatives we can help develop our brand as well as theirs.” Looking to the future though, what are the plans for Black Rose, “Firstly we have Mono who is coming to the end of his apprenticeship. What started as him being a client 4years ago, turned into a friendship, and then an apprenticeship. We would both like to thank people for their
feedback and enthusiasm during Mono’s training, which is really helping us to maintain the high level we aim to provide. Not only that though, we can’t thank people enough for the support we have had so far, without them we wouldn’t have been as successful.” Coming soon is an event hosted by Black Rose and Jameson’s Whiskey. There will be free samples, a bit of a whiskey history lesson, from their brand ambassador, and free haircuts and beard trims. Joseph states, “it’s important for us to partner with brands that hold the same core values as us and Jameson seem to fit the bill perfectly.” It is an event with very limited space, so it is advisable to make contact with Black Rose to reserve a place. One other important feature and in some eyes, THE important feature of Black Rose is the French bulldog, “Yes, Lord Commander Sir Reginald The First, to give him his official title. He is the cofounder of Black Rose, he is the perfect shop dog, people come in just to see him, passers-by stop at the window to watch him, people just love him.”

Two local pubs benefit from £400k refurbishments
Two west Sussex based pubs have benefitted from a £400,000 investment from Hall & Woodhouse, the leading family-owned brewer, to carry out some major developments to the properties. The Dragon in Horsham and The Cherry Tree in Crawley, are both operated by local entrepreneur Oscar Higareda and run in partnership with Hall &
Woodhouse (H&W). Oscar is a registered business partner (tenant) of H&W and has invested a significant amount of money himself into his businesses over the past three years to transform them into gastropubs which have been well received by the local communities within which they operate. The investment made is the second largest to date within H&W’s business partnership
estate. Oscar is a chef by trade and has more than 20 years’ culinary experience, which is where he gets his passion for good food from. At The Dragon, he has introduced a robata grill which has seen the pub’s menu introduce a wide range of meat dishes that are cooked on the grill to produce a traditional BBQ flavour. All of the food used is locally-sourced and served in a relaxed setting. More than £270,000 was invested into the property to refurbish the pub’s interiors, including an ‘orangery’ extension, which has created 38 additional covers and the installation of a fresh meat counter to support the pub’s unique robata grill offering. The garden has also benefitted from an update and now has an open fire pit with surrounding decking for guests to enjoy. Similarly at The Dragon’s sister pub, The Cherry Tree, more than £170,000 has been invested to carry out significant internal and external refurbishments to bring the pub in line with the concept at The Dragon. The pub’s newlook has created a welcoming atmosphere, which is complemented by the interior makeover. A fresh meat counter has
also been installed in the pub to strengthen its menu offering. Oscar Chacon, Business Partner at Hall & Woodhouse, said: “I am very proud of the major refurbishments which we have undertaken in partnership with H&W at both The Dragon and The Cherry Tree. The team at Hall & Woodhouse understood my vision for the pubs and have supported my desire to reinvent our hospitality offering, to ensure our guests keep returning for years to come. “As a multiple licensee I have spoken to a few pub companies over the years with the idea of expanding my portfolio of pubs, and by far the best agreement I have come across is the H&W Business Partnerships Agreement. The Picture of Dorian Gray at The Capitol Horsham Tilted Wig Productions are proud to present an exciting and bold new production of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. Co-produced with Churchill Theatre and Malvern Theatres, it will be showing in Horsham as part of its national Spring tour. Jonathan Wrather, known for his roles on both stage and screen, will be joining the cast, taking the part of Lord Henry Wotton. Jonathan is best known to audiences recently for playing the controversial Pierce Harris in ITV’s Emmerdale for two years. Other notable TV credits include Joe Carter in Coronation Street, Silent Witness and Casualty, and an extensive stage and film credits; Gavin Fowler in
the titular role of Dorian Gray, whose recent credits include Troilus in Troilus and Cressida for the RSC; Daniel Goode as Basil Hallward, Kate Dobson as Sybil Vane, Adele James in the roles of Catherine Vane and Ellen Campbell and Phoebe Pryce as Lady Victoria Wotton. Samuel Townsend completes the cast as Boy/Romeo. The play, based on the classic novel, celebrates Wilde’s wonderful language and will appeal to audiences old and new. It is adapted and directed by Séan Aydon, designed by Sarah Beaton with lighting by Matt Haskins and sound by Jon Mcleod. The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a cultured, wealthy, and beautiful young man’s downfall through moral
corruption and seduction. Dorian, who, fearing that his good looks would fade as he grows old, wishes that a portrait painted of him could bear the burden of the ageing process, leaving him forever young. But at what cost...? Featuring Wilde’s famous wit and a stellar cast, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the final scenes of the play – providing a really entertaining night out for all. Katherine Senior of Tilted Wig Productions: “The Picture of Dorian Gray will be the 21st show that Matthew and I have taken out on the road. We produced 19 shows for
Creative Cow over its 10 years’ existence and now, under the banner of Tilted Wig Productions, The Picture of Dorian Gray will be our second production, following on from the success of Great Expectations last year. We hope audiences will enjoy our classic re -telling of this famous novel as it still has such resonance with our modern day lives and with its utter timelessness should feel bang up to date. “We have a great tour lined up with some fantastic venues. Another first is to be producing this show with Churchill Theatre in Bromley, alongside Malvern Theatres, with whom we produced Great Expectations last year. We
are thrilled to be working with these two theatres and welcoming our guest star Jonathan Wrather, to bring this timeless thriller to the regions”. The Picture of Dorian Gray comes to The Capitol between 29 April and 4 May and will visit 10 theatres up and down the country. Performances: Mon 29 April - Sat 4 May, 7:30 PM, Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets, £21.50 - £22.50, available from the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220 and online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com For more details contact Tilted Wig’s own website: https://www.tiltedwigproductions.com/ or follow them on Twitter: @tiltedwiguk, Facebook: @tiltedwigproductions

Having rocked audiences across the UK and Europe during 2018, Rhino’s Revenge hits the road again in 2019. The side band of John ‘Rhino’ Edwards, bass player with rock legends Status Quo, Rhino’s Revenge will once more tour under the ‘Save The Rhino’ banner and continue to support Save The Rhino International: “Thanks to the generosity of the people who come to our gigs, we’ve already collected a substantial amount for the charity.” With two albums of original material to its name – and a third currently in the making – Rhino’s Revenge brings songs from that repertoire to the stage alongside Quo favourites which Rhino has either written or co-written, some timeless rock classics and an element of the spontaneous unknown. He admitted: “I do like to surprise myself and everyone else by throwing in a song which we haven’t necessarily even rehearsed before, in the heat of the moment”. Rhino’s Revenge is made up from
a pool of stellar players, subject to availability, that currently includes Jim Kirkpatrick from FM on guitar and drummer Richard Newman, who has performed with Paul Rodgers, Rory Gallagher, Jefferson Starship, Steve Marriott, Alvin Lee and Glenn Hughes. Rhino explained: “Paul Rodgers is my absolute hero and when he heard about my association with Save The Rhino, he signed several copies of his latest CD/DVD, gave them to our shared drummer, Richard, and we sold them on our last tour, with all proceeds going to the charity.” Having previously been a member of acts including The Climax Blues Band, Space and Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Rhino was invited to join Quo in 1986 and has been permanent in the line-up ever since. Performance: Saturday 25 May, The Holbrook Club, Horsham. Doors open 7pm. Tickets: £15, available exclusively from rhinosrevenge.com

MONDAY 29 APRIL – SATURDAY 4 MAY
Horsham Piazza Italia Italian festival begins Continued from front page Horsham Scooter Safety adding some variety at Piazza Italia by arranging a mobility scootermanoeuvring course on The Forum. Members of the public will be encouraged to ride a scooter and help to spread the word about the Safety Sessions that are offered for scooter users. As in 2017, Easter Saturday is not a Piazza Italia event day. In addition to some great Easter Saturday Markets, Bensons’ Fun on the Forum and the Rotary Scalextric in Swan Walk will run all three Easter days with Messy Easter by Horsham Churches Together adding fun for little ones in Swan Walk on Easter Saturday only. What’s on Good Friday: Following some early vehicle arrivals, Horsham Churches Together will stage its Walk of Witness from town churches to the 11.10am Good Friday service at the Carfax Bandstand. Always well attended, the service brings home the story of Easter and offers a treat of hot cross buns for service goers.
Good Friday’s Carfax display will put Lamborghinis centre stage again thanks to HR Owen and their customers. 2019 will also welcome Italian motorbikes and scooters in the Market Square and outside ASK Italian restaurant respectively. Alfa Romeo’s will have their own display in East Street with the ever popular classic FIAT 500’s taking up position on the Crown pub corner. A small display of FIAT coupes and Abarths is planned for the Forum alongside Benson’s funfair rides. On the Carfax , a new feature ‘Crates Classics’, will showcase a number of interesting vehicles including brace of rare vintage Lancia Dilambdas one of them built for The Maharaja of Mysore in 1929. No Horsham Piazza Italia is complete without event friends, The ItalianJob.Com, a charity for whom 2019 is a very special year. This is the charity’s 30th Anniversary, the 60th anniversary of the first Mini and the 50th Anniversary of the iconic first film. ‘The Jobbers’, who rally to or
from Italy every year have raised over £2.5 million since 1990 for children’s causes, will bring their special brand of Mini mayhem to the Bishopric with parades through Carfax on the way in and out. The organisers are delighted that Horsham’s new Everyman cinema in Piries Place have chosen to support the ‘jobbers’ with special screenings of the original film on Good Friday and Easter Monday afternoons. What’s on Easter Monday: On Easter Monday, Premier GT are taking their involvement in Piazza Italia to the next level by booking in cars for every display location, East Street, Market Square, Bishopric and the Carfax, as well as their own Parkside Race Paddock. A real first for Horsham, this eclectic mix of top car talent will make for a very exciting display. Aside from showcasing some of the most amazing cars of the day, a handful of hyper cars are promised at The Parkside Race Paddock (next to the Black Jug Pub), the area will have a simulator driving competition and electric go-karts for kids.
Carmela Deli is undergoing a renaissance under the guidance of Rossella Raciti and her husband Marek. Keen to provide the residents of Horsham with the best in Italian food and drink, they have been busy sourcing new items, creating new products and enhancing their menu to ensure everybody can enjoy a wide variety of items. Hailing from Sicily and taking many of her influences from the South of Italy, Rossella is keen to enable her Family heritage to shine through, this doesn’t mean you won’t be able to sample other delights from the Country though, “Our products are mainly from Southern Italy. Sicily and Sardinia mainly, but if somebody is looking for something in particular from elsewhere we will try and source it for them. “ she says. With eye catching window displays that are amongst the best in the town, it is always going to be somewhere that makes you stop and look, so why not now venture in and see what they have to offer. With excellent Panacotta, Cannoli, Limoncello , fresh pasta and more you could discover something new for your pallete or pick up something thst you remember from a holiday from long ago. An emphasis on making fresh food, Rossella was delighted to have Marek join her
on this adventure, “He was the chef at the Carmela restaurant but now he has come here, that means you can now enjoy the same quality you had there, in here.’ She says. The fresh pasta has been a huge success and Marek shows me a few of the types now available, each may be suited to a certain meal and both Rossella and Marek can always advise you on what suits your meal choice the best. The deli open on Sundays too, Rossella is hoping that more people will pay her a visit, especially as more new products keep appearing, “We will be the only place in the area selling “fuoco dell’etna’” from the famous Mount Etna, and we will be getting a “paste di mandorla” that is really good.” Carmelas has become quite a focal point of the community and not just for the large number of Italian people living here. Businesses often order food from them for meetings or conferences and earlier this year Marek cooked for a charity event where all proceeds of food sold went to chestnut tree house. Pay them a visit when you can and if its Monday-Thursday at selected times, you can get £1.50 off your coffee and cake order. Throughout Piazza Italia they will be offering limoncello samples but in the meantime, go to www.carmelas.co.uk to find out more

Horsham Gymnasts star in Regional Championships
Gymnastics Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Gymnastic Club juniors had a fantastic day competing at the recent South East Grades Regional Tournament at Guildford. They started with 10 year old Compulsory 3 gymnasts, when
Georgia Stables finished a highly commendable second, earning selection for the South East team in the National Finals, for which Arabella Aston gained a place as travelling reserve after coming fifth at Guildford. The Compulsory 2 gymnasts (aged 11) were having a practice competition at the event,
but with Regional titles awarded, and Horsham had a fantastic clean sweep with Brooke Stocker crowned Regional Champion after coming first, with Tabitha Lees 2nd and Elisha Venturini 3rd. There was further success at National Grade 1 level, with member of the SE Nationals team Cissy Marlow 4th overall, travelling Nationals reserve Phoebe Light 5th and Isabel Carr 9th. Lola McNaughton took 1st place at National Grade 2, becoming Regional Champion in the process! It got even better when Morgan Millar was also 1st – another Regional Champion, winning automatic selection for the National Finals, and, as if that was not enough, the Club’s achievements were underlined by Regional Champion Nureeza Miller taking 1st at Compulsory 5 level. Also, at Compulsory Grade 4 Isla Stocker was 1st – yet another Regional Champion getting through to the Nationals – with Lucy Marshall 7th overall and, nine year old Zara Pathitis 9th Rightly elated, Horsham Gymnastics Centre Coach, Lisa Jestico told the District Post: “In total our Club had 14 gymnasts entered with 11 finishing in the top five of their respective grade. They took home eight medals and we produced five Regional Champions with 10 going through to the National Finals at Stoke on Trent in May. Exceptional results! We are all very proud of the hard work put in to achieve such success – good luck to our gym-

Roffey looking for double glory! Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey are reigning Premier League Champions, having won the title four times in the last five seasons – during which period they won the Sussex Cup and lost a final with the scores level – yet there is no question of them resting on their laurels, Captain Matt Davies telling the District Post: “We should be stronger than last year as quality bat Mike Norris is returning to Roffey from Ifield and bringing opening bowler Jamie Pearce with him, and Ben Manenti is coming back, too, after his exploits with the Sydney sixers in the Aussie Big Bash. We’ve also signed legspinner Grant Pugh, who has been playing in Hampshire. But, lots of other teams will have strengthened, too, so we’re expecting some tough opposition. As we know from last year, it’s a long season so consistency will be the key, especially as we’ll be competing for three trophies again.” Last year Roffey’s extended cup runs saw them touring the country, including long trips to Cornwall and Derbyshire, with the side reaching the National Knock Out semi final stage, National T20 Finals Day and the Sussex Cup Final, Matt Davies continuing: “We’ve set our hearts on lifting a national trophy, and if we can play like we did last year then winning the league and a cup is not out of the
question. We’ve been in the nets throughout the winter and have been able to train outside as the season approaches – training hard has been crucial to our past success.” Other keys to Roffey’s excellent results have been the camaraderie created by players having come up through the ranks together into the first team, combined with regular availability, with everyone wanting to play week in week out and do well. There is an excellent coaching system, star first team allrounder Rohit Jagota having recently been appointed Head of Youth Development for all Roffey colts’ age groups, with junior cricket played on the ground at Faygate. Matt Davies summed up saying: “We start our league programme on Saturday May 4th with a trip to Brighton, which can be tricky – they’ve just signed Delray Rawlins and his Sussex teammates Phil Salt and Luke Wells have also played for them, alongside former county player Matt Machin, but it remains to be seen how many of them will feature against us. Our first home match is against newly promoted Mayfield on the following Saturday, with an 11.30 start. Sadly, during the winter we lost Vice President Derek Bird, one of our very keenest supporters and that has given us extra motivation to succeed in Dell Boy’s memory.”

Cricket returns to HCC this Saturday ! Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Cricket restarts at Horsham Cricket Club on Saturday with a warm up game against Waterlooville (12.30), then, on Wednesday, in the first of the many representative games to be staged at the Club this season, Sussex Over 50s XI play their Hampshire counterparts – and former England rugby star Rob Andrew, now CEO of Sussex County Cricket Club, could be playing for Sussex O50s again. Horsham 1st XI have been drawn against Brighton & Hove in an away fixture in the ECB Royal London National Knock Out Cup on Sunday April 28th and they open their 1st Central Sussex Cricket League Premier Division programme on Saturday May 4th with a tough home game against last year’s runner up, Eastbourne. This season all Premier Division games will start at 11.30am, and, as before, half of the matches - the early and late fixtures – will be on a 50 over win format, with the programme continuing every Saturday until the last game on August 31st. Horsham are also entered in the Sussex T20 Cup, which they last won in the Hove final in 2016 – their first scheduled game in that competition is on Sunday May 26th against either Felbridge or Crawley Eagles away. Richard Marshall, Chairman of Horsham Cricket Club tells the District Post: “The ground is looking really good, throughout the winter we’ve had Horsham Tigers junior football and adult Sunday league games with Forest Recomissioned FC and I’m pleased to report
that there is little or no damage to the outfield, we’re managing the groundsman work in house again this year. We had a good turnout for our NatWest CricketForce Day, preparing the Club for the season ahead, and there was practice in the middle last Saturday and our outdoor nets are up and running, so we’re all raring to go! On the playing front, we’ve signed Kiwi paceman Jamie Brown as our overseas player and we’ll have Sussex’s Tom Haines and Will Beer when they’re available, we’re also hoping that Nick Oxley will be returning if his potential contract with the MCC Young Cricketers allows. The trees are greening up and blossoms are in full display alongside the tennis courts, and we’ve got our customary very comprehensive range of matches - so bring it on and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the ground again!” In addition to the 1st XI games there will be 2nds, 3rd and 4th XI, Women’s and Colts’ fixtures with both grounds in full use, plus Thursday and local Gullick Cup evening matches (the Gullick Final is on Tuesday July 16th). Sussex 2nd XI play Lancashire from June 11th-13th and Glamorgan from July 1st- 3rd and the many other representative games include Sussex Under 19s, O60s and 70s matches and a variety of Colts tournaments. The full fixture card is available at https://www.horshamsportsclub. com/sports/cricket/fixture-card/ and from the club bar and the Club runs a comprehensive range of social events to meet all tastes. Horsham through to promotion play offs with games in hand
Photo by John Lines Saturday April 13 – The Bostik League – South East Division Herne Bay 2 3 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Over 300 spectators, – including a sizeable contingent of travelling Hornet supporters, saw Horsham qualify for the promotion play offs at Herne Bay’s Winch’s Field with two games still to play. Despite the hosts initially looking more lively, an early Horsham goal settled the nerves, Chris Smith crashing in the rebound from a corner in the seventh minute after Jack Brivio had previously headed Lee Harding’s supply past the post. Herne Bay reacted positively, but
Horsham Men win the Sussex Cup Final–again
Saturday April 13 – Sussex Cup Final Horsham Men’s 1st XI 4 2 Eastbourne Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Men rounded off their difficult season on a happy note, winning the Sussex Cup Final for a fourth year on the bounce. Team Manager Al Campbell telling the District Post: “There was a festival atmosphere at Hurstpierpoint College last Saturday in fitting with the magnificent all-weather facilities on offer, with the game played in front of a good crowd. And, in a season that has been more down than up, it all came good for Horsham Men’s first team when we comprehensively

beat Eastbourne, despite us only fielding a squad of 13, with Coach Dom Male having to pull out unexpectedly at the eleventh hour. But, Rob Turnbull’s side took the contest by the scruff of the neck early doors, retaining possession and making Eastbourne chase the game. This was organised pressure hockey from Horsham who claimed three short corners in the first 15 minutes, none of which our normal specialist Sean Pearcy was able to convert. At the fourth time of asking Tim Upchurch stepped up to the D and rifled his flick past a static Eastbourne keeper. Pearcy may well be absent travelling next season but, in Upchurch, the team has a real set piece threat. Pearcy, though, did have a hand in the second Horsham goal, his flamboyant aerial pass downfield finding Sam Gill who drove to the bye-line and
fired in a cross for Joey Humphreys to very cleverly divert into the net.” Al Campbell continued: “After the turn around Horsham took their foot off the gas, dropped deeper and let in two rather unnecessary, messy goals. At 2-2 the game looked in the balance but Freddie Campbell, playing a tremendous anchor role in midfield, steadied the ship. A crisp passing move split the Eastbourne defence and left Zak Chinn to fire home from a narrow angle. Then Humphreys was involved again - in Horsham’s fourth, jinking through the defence to be chopped down by a cynical foul when metres from the goal. Pearcy made no mistake about converting the penalty for a top five finish in the league scorers table with 15 goals for the season.” As reported elsewhere in the sports pages of this week’s District Post, Horsham had teams in seven of the finals and left with a total of four cups – and after seeing so many medal winners, Horsham Hockey Club Chairman Chris Poland said: ‘Today shows just what strength in depth, and diversity, we bring to sport in Horsham. We are more than a club, we are a family, and welcome new players at all levels.’ Meanwhile, commenting on Horsham Men’s latest silverware and their season in general, Al Campbell summed up saying: “Eastbourne finished five points above us in the league, but this result, and the fact that we were the only side to beat top team Guildford, goes to show what might have been. We’re now looking forward to next season”.
Horsham kept them at bay – until 11 minutes after Horsham’s goal, when Bradley Schafer latched onto Alexander Mulrooney-Skinner’s centre, giving Horsham keeper Josh Pelling no chance. Then, mid way through the half Horsham might have been 2-1 down, but Schafer was off target from a one on one situation. Schafer, though, kept pressing and Pelling had to be at his best to prevent further damage. But, Horsham re-took the lead when Tyrell Richardson-Brown scythed through to feed Harding, who headed home, the score remaining 2-1 in Horsham’s favour at the break, Schafer failing with a late header. Herne Bay resumed in very determined mood and, within ten
minutes, they were rewarded when Anderson’s strong volley converted a free kick to level the scores. With the prize of the play offs at stake, Horsham upped their game, Joe Shelley twice heading Harding’s set pieces too aerially. Smith, too, was creating danger, but Herne Bay were also developing possibilities. Yet, with the ball switching from end to end Rob O’Toole and Smith kept Simon Overland alert in the Herne Bay goal, persistence paying off when substitute Kieran Lavery’s clean strike sailed into the net to put Horsham ahead again, the lead being maintained up to the final whistle, reassuring the Horsham faithful that the Hornets really had made the playoffs. With two more league games to play – against 17th in the table Faversham Town at Lancing on Saturday, and relegation threatened Guernsey in the Channel Islands on Easter Monday – Horsham are second behind champions Cray Wanderers, and five points clear of Hastings United, who have a game in hand. Horsham CEO John Lines told the District Post: “Nobody thought we’d be in this great position, but we’ve had a tremendous run and if we finish second then we’ll play the fifth team in the play offs, while the third placed side will play the fourth – we expect that to be on Monday 29th”.To see Horsham playing in a higher league at their excellent new Hop Oast facility really would be a dream come true for Horsham’s loyal fans
Horsham Ladies and Juniors win Sussex Cups Saturday April 13 – Sussex Cup Finals Day at Hurstpierpoint College Horsham Ladies 1st XI 6 1 Brighton & Hove 1s Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a cracking day for Horsham Hockey Club ! With seven Horsham teams through to the Sussex Cup Finals Day at Hurstpierpoint College, four of the club’s sides carried off the silverware – the Ladies’ 1s, the Under 14 boys, who beat Eastbourne 3-2, the U 16 boys, after beating Brighton & Hove 4-0, and the Men’s 1s (see separate report). And, it might have been five winners, but the Ladies’ 4s were edged out in the penalty shoot out. The Sussex Cup very much belongs to Horsham Ladies – since the 2001-2 season they have appeared in 14 finals, winning 12, Emily White telling the District Post: “Against Brighton & Hove we were not great for the first ten minutes, but there was only one side in it once we got going. My sister, CJ, opened our scoring with a flick, then Lizzie Cook added another to give us a 2-1 lead at the break. Then, it was all us in the second half, with Rosie Firth, Anna Summerfield, Kendall Deck and myself adding further goals. We passed the ball very well and it was a demolition job iafter the interval, when our 2nd XI keeper Holly Webb took over from Hannah Simpson in goal, Louisa Denman stepping up to captain the side.”
Horsham Ladies suffered disappointment in the first of their promotion play offs – they left for Birmingham at 7.30am on Sunday morning to play Olton & West Midland opponents, who had beaten Leeds 4-0 in the first play off at Leeds Beckett University on April 7th. At Birmingham the Midlanders scored an early field goal and then converted a flick to lead 2-0 at the break. The second half was more even, but Olton scored again to run out 3-0 winners, CJ White saying: “The scoreline was not a true reflection – we created loads of chances, but the difference was they capitalised on theirs. We took a small squad, including some 2nd XI players, whereas they had 16 first teamers to call on. But, all is not lost – we play Leeds at Christ’s Hospital on Sunday 28th (13.30) and if we beat them then we go up, and if we don’t then we stay in our present league, so fingers crossed!”

Horsham brush Farnham aside to gain promotion
Photos by Clive Turner Saturday April 13 – Play Off for promotion to London 1 South Horsham 44 17 Farnham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a perfect day for Horsham sport in front of a huge animated crowd - estimated at over 600 – the largest ever seen for a game at Horsham Rugby Club, with cars overflowing onto the bottom field, and a barbecue and beer tent in full swing. It was a winner takes all one game shoot out, providing Horsham with richly-deserved promotion to the London South 1 League. It was the most important win for the club in at least 25 years, the culmination of much planning, dedication and hard work - the result was right, a comfortable win, the weather behaved and Horsham turned the clock back, restoring themselves to the same level that they briefly enjoyed with their strong side in the mid 1990s. Following the break up of that team the 1st XV suffered multiple relegations, right down to Sussex 1 and it has been a long, steep climb back, starting with play off
promotion to return to London League rugby in 2007 – a game in which current player Nick Bell featured, underlining his commitment, resilience and loyalty. Horsham were London 3 SE League champions in 2015, and are now elevated from London SE2 to London S1 with sons of the 90s stars excelling in today’s side. The game against Farnham – second in the London SW2 League – began a little nervously, but Horsham withstood early pressure and a good team build up found Jack Osgood wide to power through, Tom Johnson’s kick putting Horsham 7-0 up in the fourth minute, and it soon got better when Declan Nwachukwu pounced on a dropped ball to run in a try from the half way line, Johnson again obliging. Farnham, though responded with an unconverted try in the corner, but Horsham were in no mood to submit, Osgood scything through the defence to score under the posts for Johnson’s routine conversion, whose subsequent penalty gave Horsham a 24-5 lead at the break. Early in the second half Farnham reduced the deficit with a maximised try out wide, but Hor-
sham hit back again, Sam Hampson gathering Marcus Condon’s perfectly weighted kick to outrun the defence, Johnson’s boot adding the extras, before kicking two penalties and supplying Joe Wilde to get through under the posts and then convert again. Farnham did manage to notch up a consolation try at the death, but promotion had long since been in Horsham’s pocket, a runner with a green flare touring the pitch before Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “Our fantastic vein of form has been built on hard work from every member of the squad, as prominently displayed by the impact that our replacements all made on taking the field, providing impetus and energy in the face of spirited opponents. Although we did not quite perform at the levels that we have achieved recently, we scored five tries and were very strong defensively, making important tackles on dangerous runners throughout. We left several opportunities out there, but given that this was a big stage, mistakes are to be expected and ultimately a good win in front of a large crowd was achieved. There were a number of excellent
individual accomplishments, Tom Johnson delivering a perfect day from the kicking tee, so it took a fine performance from Johnny Whiting to be awarded Man of the Match.” What did the naturally elated Horsham players think? Talking to the District Post, kicking supremo, former Captain Tom Johnson said: “I feel absolutely whacked – it’s been a long hard season! But it’s been superb and with our facilities hopefully we can attract one or two new players and consolidate in London 1.” Declan Nwachukwu – scorer of almost 30 tries - told us: “I first came up to the club as a 13 year old who’d never played the game – we’re a real team, backing each other up all the way.” While, after his outstanding game, Jack Osgood commented: “Our side is young and flexible – any of us can switch in and I’m looking forward to next season already!”, while Kyle Fairs added: “This is totally unbelievable – just shows what we can do, emotional really!” And, opinions from the touchline? Richard Ordidge: “I was confident because we’ve been on a run, but what a fantastic, historic day for the Club.” Ist XV Manager Barry
Wright: “It’s marvellous that we’ve got ourselves back to our highest standing again.” Former Captain Phillip Allen: “We really deserve this, we were clearly better than Farnham today.” Past Horsham player Frank Talbot: “We probably had less possession in the first half, yet we still scored 24 points. We’re so explosive and really cleaned them up after the interval.” Coach Richard Bell: “We defended so well and then were so quick on the break”. Without trips to far off Deal, Dover and Thanet Wanderers, Horsham will have less travelling, but, musing over next season, Nick Stocker summed up with: “As in all sport, the work just got harder!” Farnham were understandably deflated but paid tribute to Horsham: “Huge congratulations to Horsham on their win. Definitely the better team, good luck in London 1 and we may see you soon!” However, Horsham’s season is not quite done, they have one last game, against Hastings and Bexhill in the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup Final at East Grinstead on April 27th. Current holders Horsham have won the cup for the last five years.
