Spring sun brings thousands to Horsham Town for Piazza Italia The two days of Horsham’s 13th Piazza Italian festival presented the perennial blend of supercars and Italian cars, Italian market stalls and street food, themed entertainments and business promotions greatly boosted by a blast of glorious sunshine throughout. Built in to the event’s scheduling, Good Friday’s Horsham Churches Together bandstand service and Walk of Witness procession drew a massive audience who got the Carfax off to a rousing start accompanied by the surrounding bustle of the already trading market and street food stalls, all decked out in their Italian finery. Hundreds of supercars did their best to dominate proceedings but had the show stolen from them on both days by the most diminutive of all the car participants. Huge cheers and applause were reserved for the departure of the classic Fiat 500s and 30th Anniversary Italian Job Minis on Good Friday, and the sole green Fiat 126 from Horsham Barbershop on the Monday. (Britain so loves an underdog!) A brilliant bouquet of Italian bikes also set the pulses
racing as they roared through. Horsham District Year of Culture had boosted the event’s entertainments this year on Good Friday with a brilliant opera singer and roving accordion player. On Easter Monday was an Italian jazz trio and more amazing opera. Much applause accompanied all the performances with several couples seen dancing to the swinging jazz. Quite a few town businesses chose to take advantage of the event too, including Crates Local Produce, Carmela Deli, Paninos and The Horsham Cellar, all of whom were offering something special in keeping with the weekend. Horsham Time Well Spent events annual sponsors were well to the fore with Brock Taylor hosting the amazing Sporting Bears team who fielded an incredible selection of cars for charity ride outs both days raising some £5,680 for Chestnut Tree House and The Children’s Trust – an event record. Recently rebranded Impact Specialist Finance sponsored the departure gate and Cote Brasserie presented the first of five Concours d’Elegance awards for best

On a hot and sunny Good Friday, hundreds of people took part in Horsham Churches Together’s Good Friday Walk of Witness from Brighton Road Baptist Church and outside the St John’s Catholic Church and the United Reformed Church, converging at the Carfax Bandstand for the
Good Friday service. Following a welcome by Deacon Tom Murray, Moderator of Horsham Churches Together, the Lifespring Worship Band provided the music for the Good Friday service, with Revd Natalie Loveless, Vicar at St Leonard’s Church, giving a short, interactive talk
about the meaning of Easter, and prayers for Horsham by Revd Dr Tim Carter, Minister of Brighton Road Baptist Church. Hot cross buns were distributed around the town with serviettes explaining why there is a cross on a Hot Cross Bun: “Traditionally
eaten on Good Friday, when Jesus Christ was put to death, the bun’s cross reminds us of what Jesus did for all mankind – even you!” Horsham Churches Together’s Messy Easter Horsham Churches Together set up a pop-up shop in Swan Walk on Saturday 20 April and organised Messy Easter craft activities. Children and their families enjoyed making bracelets with crosses, a scratch art cross activity, lolly stick crosses, and making Easter story cards to explain the events of Holy Week. A TV played Easter stories from the Bible Society and the Beginner’s Bible. There was also a competition to win The Real Easter Egg (the egg that shares the Easter story). Children were delighted to take away one of the Bible Society books - either ‘Three Friends and the Miracle Man’ or ‘The Seriously Surprising Story’. If you would like to find out more about Horsham Churches Together’s 32 churches, please look at the website horshamct. org.uk and click on ‘churches’ or contact Rosemary Couchman, Horsham Churches Together Development Co-ordinator (rosemary.couchman@horshamct.org. uk). Photos by Toby Phillips Continued from front page Premier GT of Washington excelled themselves on Easter Monday, presenting a town full of high value cars that numbered over 120. All but the most picky couldn’t have failed to be impressed by the waves of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Maseratis parading through the Carfax, which were joined by a large McLaren and Porsche contingent
that had been billed as England v Germany supercars. 2019’s Piazza Italia welcomed the return of show compere, the incomparable Tim Fifield, social media through the weekend was driven by By Jove Media working closely with Tim for live streaming reports to keep people who couldn’t be there abreast of all the action.
Event organiser Horsham District Council wishes to thank all commercial and voluntary participants for working together to give the town people and its businesses such an enjoyable weekend: “Special thanks go to ETMS and SERV Sussex for the excellent traffic management services they provided and our event sponsors Kwik Fit, Premier GT, Bishops (part
of FGB Barnes Group) and Bunny Motors.” Plans for a huge town event programme, supported by the Council in keeping with the Year of Culture celebrations are now in full swing with a “magnificent seven” in prospect before the end of September, capped by the a greatly expanded Horsham AmeriCARna event on Sunday 29 September.
Horsham’s Great British Weekend is the next major Horsham Time Well Spent event in the town with a day full of marvellous Morris dancing mayhem on Saturday 11 May and a day packed full of British favourites on Sunday 12 May, including Loxwood Joust, traction engines, music and dance, classic British cars from Sadcase and Aston Martin Owners Club Area 16.

admin@infosussexeds.org.uk We are always looking for new Trustees, volunteers, EDS not necessary! Why SEDS has potentially saved my life! Karen Scott: “I had never heard of EDS until 2015. I was working 3 days a week, spending 4 in bed in order to do so and using crutches. At a wedding the groom’s mother told me she had EDS and that some symptoms were similar to M.E. Later after watching DIY SOS and Antonia Payne-Cheney, a teenager with EDS I decided to attend a meeting held by Jane Green who was setting up a local community group which became known as SEDS. It not only changed my life, but has the potential to save it. I had always been highly flexible as a child. A teacher commented on it when I was 6 and how I seemed to get more tired than my peers. I had knockknees and a friend commented on my pointy feet as a teen. I had no idea anything was wrong. My knee dislocated when I was 17 for the first time. By my thirties I had ruptured a tendon in the other leg (as had my mother at about the same age) and had a mild stroke. In my forties my symptom list was huge and growing by the day and every day I never knew what I would wake up to. It is very scary to have symptoms and not be believed. Attending the meeting with Jane made me feel as if I’d been slapped. All those apparently disconnected issues had a name! Jane encouraged me to seek a diagnosis and it was confirmed. I had hEDS. By May, we were on BBC TV and we had SEDS truly under way a month later. My heart and gut issues were now
being managed properly; I was receiving weekly physiotherapy and I thought that was the end of the story. It wasn’t. Through SEDS I learned about Cranial Cervical Instability and Atlantoaxial Instability. An upright scan showed I had both. With no neurosurgeon in the UK available to operate on someone with EDS due to its complexity, the results were sent to hospital Teknon in Barcelona. In January this year I was told I need urgent surgery. Without it my neurological symptoms would not only continue but worsen. My neck ligaments are too soft and can’t support my head. I’m at risk of internal decapitation and death at worse. Best is impingement to spinal cord leading to paralysis of my limbs. I had to crowdfund for around £100k for surgery. At 51, the risks are greater post menopause and had only 4 months to that point. I worried if anyone wanted to help a 51 year old, but I have a husband, children and a granddaughter who need me. We have now been on BBC Sussex Radio, East Grinstead Meridian Radio, BBC South East plus most major print titles. I am at £98k now. I guess the main thing is to thank everyone who has helped me get to be able to have the operation in Spain and to make it known that the operation is on the 2nd May.... Had SEDS not taught me about CCI/AAI, my life would have been in danger without me knowing it. I would like to publicly thank them and everyone who has donated so far.” If you would like to donate to the crowdfunding page, please visit: https://www.gofundme. com/help-karen-scott-gettreatment

Mr Pirie and his Donkey make welcomed return
The long awaited return of the famous Piries Donkey took place earlier this week with the Children from Little Monkeys Nursery assisting the Piries Place team in his unveiling. After being put out to pasture when the development work increased, the iconic statue was returned to his old grazing spot and soon became a favourite with our specially invited pre school guests. As the Children were waiting patiently, sharing high 5’s with me and informing us of their day so far, you could see the excitement build for the little people as questions were directed at all the adults present, “Is it a boy or a girl donkey?” “Can we ride the donkey?” “Whats the donkeys name?” To name but a few. Joining the Children were Project Manager Paul Lewis and Site Manager Peter Stinson. Both have worked hard to bring Piries Place together and were delighted to Welcome Mr Pirie and the donkey back to the new look development, “Gilbert Ash were privileged to be involved with the exciting new revamp of Piries Place, Horsham which is nearing completion. The new multi use development was a very complex build but with the understanding and great attitude of local business owners and residents it made the process possible.
We started the project with the careful removal of Mr Pirie who was packed away and stored until the new area was ready for him, with many passers by asking of his whereabouts. This unveiling marks the start of a new era for Mr Pirie and an exciting time for Horsham with the development opening for business very soon.” Said Mr Stinson. Speaking with Mr Lewis he told The District Post, “The whole development should be ready mid May. We have handed over to
three tenants already, Everyman, who are open now. Mitchells and Butler who plan to open May bank holiday and White Brasserie who are due first week of June.” He also revealed that the Starbucks for the Piries Place will fill the unit that was formerly “meat in the middle” With much work still going on behind the scenes, Mr Lewis also informed us, “The Premier Inn is due to open May Bank Holiday and are currently taking online bookings whilst interest has been shown in the former B52’s site from a food and drink brand. The office accomodation is also prooving popular with lots of enquiries coming in.” With all of the venues planning to incorporate external seating, the general feel for Piries Place should be one that is vibrant, exciting and enticing and with the sites nearing completion Mr Lewis is confident that we stand to see some more brilliant businesses take up residence in the area, “We have seen a lot more interest as the development progresses. “ He says. With the carpark estimated to be complete in August, it is the belief from the team that the whole area could have all venues filled by the end of the Summer.

Stroke Association and Rotary International help conquer stroke in Horsham
The Stroke Association and Rotary International are joining forces to help raise awareness of one of the biggest risk factors for stroke: high blood pressure. Residents of Horsham are invited to take a moment to have a free discrete blood pressure test on April 29 at 9:30am – 4:30pm in Swan Walk, Horsham. Over half of all strokes can be caused by high blood pressure
and it is estimated that over five million people across the UK don’t realise they have the condition. Horsham Rotary Club President, William Harmsworth, said: “Know Your Blood Pressure Day on April 29 is all about raising awareness of the link between high blood pressure and stroke. Rotary are supporting the Stroke Association with blood pressure events throughout April and the rest of
the year. Horsham Rotary Club will be hosting free blood pressure tests in Swan Walk on April 29. “Stroke strikes every five minutes in the UK, but with events like these, we hope to change this. A blood pressure test is quick and painless, and it could save your life.” Alexis Wieroniey, Deputy Director for Policy and Influencing at the Stroke Association, said: “High blood pressure often has no symptoms, and it’s much more common than people think. That’s why we’re urging as many Horsham residents as possible to take a moment and have theirs checked at Horsham Rotary Club’s event on April 29. A blood pressure check only takes a moment, and it’s such a simple way to reduce your risk of a stroke.” To discover more about Horsham Rotary Club and to see how you can make a difference to Horsham and the world in general visit: www.horshamrotary.org.uk or Email: Secretary@horshamrotary.org.uk or check the Facebook page: @RotaryClubofHorsham Photo: Jeremy Quin MP having his blood pressure taken at a previous Rotary Blood Pressure Day

New restaurant to open in the Summer
You may remember when we reported on the closing of the Horsham Matters store on East Street. Along with that news we told you that an exciting new restaurant called Minami-Za would be filling the vacant space. Well there isn’t long to wait as work is underway to bring you this restaurant-Japan fusion, that will have a small South African twist. Providing its customers with a beautiful eating establishment

that has the aim of bringing nostalgia back to the table with its classic Japanese food, a music lounge and an experience that is like no other currently in the town, hopes are high as the initial work inside begins. The dream of owner Nero Gilissen is becoming a reality, and he can’t wait to share it with you, “Minami-za will bring excitement to East Street, with a music lounge focusing on Jazz and Blues,
an open plan kitchen that allows people to see all that is happening and the chance to enjoy Japanese cusine with a small South African twist, not forgetting our deli of course where you can buy ingredients to experiment making your own dishes at home.” Horsham is becoming a hotbed of live music right now with venues like the rec rooms regularly bringing us a variety of musical acts and Nero plans for his to be no different, “This will be quality music on your doorstep. A jazz/blues vibe that you may only normally find in London for example.” He says. With local produce from local suppliers being sourced, Nero is keen to promote a community feel and that doesn’t stop at the suppliers. When the lounge isn’t hosting music events it is available for hire, “It is for the community, whether a business would like to use it for a meeting, somebody would like a party or an educational group would like to use it to hold a session. Anybody can hire it for use.” Minami-za is due to open in the Summer, in the meantime register your interest at www. minami-za.com
Sadness as Cocoa Loco Horsham Closes Local one stop chocolate shop Cocoa Loco is to cease trading from their Swan Walk store at the end of this week. A popular destination for all of us with a sweet tooth, the family run business will continue to fulfil our chocolate based needs via its excellent website www.cocoaloco.co.uk. With their kitchen nearby, skilled chocolatiers spend many hours perfecting the wide variety of tatste experiences you enjoy. We at The District Post will be sad to see them go and wish them all the best with their web shop. Trading for 4 and a half years, the business prided itself on being organic and fairtrade. Believing that chocolate can be 100% ethical as well as tasty. Serving the public

As a result we have reluctantly decided not to renew the lease on our Horsham store. There will be an in-store sale starting on Easter Monday and our last day will be Saturday 27th April”. Kingsfold based builders’ merchant ‘NYEs’ will be hosting a free family fun day on Saturday 18 May to celebrate its rebrand and new warehouse premises. The family owned merchant, formerly known as D.W. Nye, has
recently undergone a facelift, updating its logo and name, and adding an additional 1000m2 to its warehouse and office facilities. The event, named ‘Have a NYEs day’, will welcome visitors between 10am and 3pm for an array
of free entertaining activities, and delicious gourmet delights served up by local suppliers. One of the biggest celebrities in the building trade - Bob the Builder - will be meeting guests throughout the day, and families will have the chance to get autographs and take photos. Children will also be able to test out their construction skills on one of the mini diggers at NYEs’ designated Diggerland area, have their face painted and get a glitter tattoo. Free food and drink will be available for all visitors, including mouth-watering NYEs pies – specially made for the occasion, as well as burgers, hot dogs and a limited quantity of NYEs popcorn and candyfloss. Guests can also enjoy a NYEs beer from the Surrey Hills Brewery or sip on an exclusive NYEs gin cocktail, blended just for the occasion. Soft drinks, tea and coffee will also be served. Prizes will be up for grabs in two unique competitions to test bricklaying and nail-banging
skills along with live giveaways on NYEs’ social media platforms. Raffle tickets in aid of The Rainy Day Trust - the UK’s only charity supporting the home improvement workforce in times of need – will also be on sale with prizes including family days out, cinema tickets, power tools and restaurant vouchers. All proceeds from the raffle will go directly to the charity. Rex Nye, who is Managing Director at NYEs, said: “Everyone is welcome to attend and we hope as many people as possible can join us on Saturday 18th May. It’s going to be a fantastic day for all the family with lots to see and do, as well as an opportunity to celebrate the best of our region by sampling some delicious food and drink.” To find out more about the ‘Have a NYEs Day’ event, visit: www.dwnye.co.uk/company-info/ news/come-along-to-our-relaunch-event-for-a-day-of-freefamily-fun.
Horsham Battle of the Bands announces heat venues and dates Horsham’s long running ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition has announced venue partners and dates for the heats of this year’s Original Bands and Covers Acts competitions. Thriving new Horsham music venue The REC Rooms will host the two heats in the Covers Acts competition on 18 & 25 July, while Horsham Sports Club (HSC) will host the two heats in the Original Bands competition on 19 and 26 July. The finals in both competitions will take place on the big festival stage in the Human Nature Gar-
den in Horsham Park on Saturday 17 August. The always popular Acoustic Originals competition will take place on Saturday 10 August on the Carfax bandstand during the regular Saturday market. Horsham BotB chairman, Mark Daly, said: “We’re delighted to welcome on board these two excellent heat venues. While there are plenty of great live music venues in Horsham, there aren’t many with the capacity for BotB at its peak, which is, of course, what we’re always aiming for. HSC is a well established large venue hosting as it does many top local
acts throughout the year, as well as The Big Gig. The REC Rooms is a perfect new addition; we expect it to be a big draw for covers bands looking to showcase themselves and potentially get a booking there.” There are only a handful of places left in each competition. Bands can currently still enter at www.horshambotb.co.uk All BotB events this year will be FREE entry and part of the Horsham Festival and ‘Year of Culture’ fringe. If you’re interested in getting involved as a volunteer on the day, as part of the organising
committee or as a sponsor of the event, please email the team at info@horshambotb.co.uk.

Amberley Museum – Spring Bus Show
We at Amberley Museum are hosting our annual Spring Bus Show on Sunday 28 April, when you can enjoy your first opportunity of the season to ride historic buses around the site, with a wonderful display of our Museum buses and visiting exhibitors. Exhibiting buses include: a 1939 Harrington bodied Leyland Cheetah, possibly the only pre-war one of its kind in existence. Also, a 1944 Bedford
Duple Replica, which is a wartime Bedford OWB, was rescued for preservation. But the bodywork was in a poor condition and had to be scrapped, so parts for an identical body were made by the Ulster Transport Authority and sent to Portsmouth, where it was reconstructed by the Working Omnibus Museum Project. Our own Southdown collection will also be on display, and you will have the opportunity to take a ride on buses not normally in
service around our 36 acre site. Located 10 minutes from Arundel in the heart of the South Downs National Park, you can discover the South’s working past. Learn about over 150 years of our culture and heritage, and have fun riding around our Museum on our historic buses and narrow-gauge railway. Our exhibits include our historic lime kilns which are Scheduled Ancient Monuments, and original buildings from the days our site was a working chalk quarry. In our BT Connected Earth display children can have fun learning about the history of communications, and have a go on the old telephone switchboards. Our Electricity hall has a working model of a Tesla Coil, where demonstrations can be held by our volunteers when available. With over 40 exhibits to explore, there is so much to see in any weather. Our main open season is from 6 March until the 3 November, when we will be open from Wednesday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays. With so much to discover, learn and have fun, you will want to come back! Visit www.amberleymuseum.co.uk now, to plan your visit.

Horsham’s Jofra Archer on England’s World Cup radar
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham all-rounder Jofra Archer, a former West Indies Under 19 player, has been picked for England, in a controversial but not unexpected move. 24 year old Barbados-born Archer had been encouraged to play club cricket in Sussex by his fellow countryman friend Chris Jordan, the county’s England player. And, while playing for Horsham Archer had games for Sussex 2nd XI, going on to make his first team debut against Pakistan at Hove in July 2016, when he impressed with four wickets on the opening day. Archer played for Horsham last season at Cricketfield Road against Roffey, and, the following day in a cup game at East Grinstead. Before coming to Horsham he had a season with Sussex Premier League side Middleton, in a brief whirlwind innings at Roffey smashing a ball through a bedroom window with a huge six. At Horsham Archer was clearly talented, but there was no real hint that he would so rapidly become one of the most successful bowlers and useful lower order batsmen in England, and beyond, scoring 72 in his Championship debut against Essex. Generating real pace from his smooth action and hitting hard with the bat subsequently produced excellent returns, making him a target acquisition in the IPL, where he

is currently playing for Rajasthan Royals, having also played for other T20 franchises, Hobart Hurricanes and Quetta Gladiators. Jofra Chioke Archer has an English father and a British Passport and had expected a long wait to come into contention for an England call up, until the qualification period was reduced from seven to three years, making him eligible from March 17th, the move drawing criticism, the criteria appearing to having been changed to accommodate one player. Although Archer has played only 28 First Class games and made just fourteen 50 over appearances, he has proved himself highly capable in all formats, including 90 T20 matches and would undoubtedly add strength to any international side given his exciting performances to date, especially when bowling under the cosh. He has not been picked for England’s initial World Cup squad – the competition beginning on May 30th at venues in England and Wales, but England can make changes to their selections up to May 23rd. Meanwhile Archer has the opportunity to propel himself into England’s final squad if he shines in a one-day game against Ireland, in Dublin on May 3rd and a T20 contest versus Pakistan two days later, followed by further chances in the five-match ODI series between 8th and 19th May. Former England Captain Michael Vaughan says: “If you are in a selection meeting, whether as captain, coach or chairman of selectors, you have got one school of thought: is there anybody out there who can improve the team? Is there any player who can bring something to the team that we do not have already? In Jofra Archer, you think, absolutely. The England one-day team are very, very good but in games they have lost over the past few years they have lacked a bit of pace, a bit of nous and that ability to bowl under pressure. Archer ticks every one of those boxes. I am not being harsh on any of the other bowlers, but Archer
has been outstanding.” England player Chris Woakes, who could well be a victim if Archer is given a permanent England role, has described Archer’s probable selection as: “Not fair morally”. Quietly spoken Archer has wisely been diplomatic, saying: “I’m going to give it my best shot. Of course I want to play in the World Cup, but if it doesn’t happen for me I’m not going to get upset. I understand the situation and I’m very happy with everything. I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes. I’m not in the World Cup squad but it’s a great chance for me to show what I can do and anything can happen. If someone gets injured, I want to put myself in a position where I’m the first person they turn to. I’ve worked pretty much all my life for this moment and just want to put my best foot forward. I thought I would have to wait longer before I would be in contention for the full squad and that I would have to play for England Lions - I was fully prepared in my mind that it was going to be a seven-year job. When I found out I was qualified more quickly it was obviously a bit of a shock but also exciting.” Former South Africa batsman Gary Kirsten, who won the 2011 World Cup as India coach, and coached Archer during his breakthrough season in Australia’s 20over Big Bash League, commented: “You could see straight away that this guy has got something very special to offer. He likes to be at the forefront when it is a tight match and you cannot ask for more than that. He is a nice guy, loves playing and just gets on with it. In terms of Archer being picked for England, I’ve seen the quote from Chris Woakes and I agree with him - I do not know who would miss out but it would be hard on that individual, especially if he has done well for the team over a number of years. It is a bit of a risk, but Archer brings X-factor to the team, without a doubt, but you have to think what expense that will be at.”
Horsham district sports news round up Sport Martin Read - Sports Reporter Following their promotion to London South 1 League, Horsham Rugby Club are off on a celebratory tour to Poland’s Krakow, seeking opponents prepared to take them on ahead of their appearance in the Bob Rogers Sussex Cup Final against Hastings & Bexhill at East Grinstead on Saturday, the competition that they have won for the last five years. Meanwhile, warm up cricket has started at Horsham, where a team giving opportunities to some junior players competed against Waterlooville, Hampshire. The visitors won convincingly, but the game was marked by Johnny Whiting Man of the Match in Horsham Rugby Club’s victorious play off match against Farnham – opening the bowling and skipper Michael Thornely topscoring with 69, more than half of Horsham’s total. Whiting will be Horsham Cricket Club’s new 2nd XI Captain this season. Staying on cricket, Horsham Cricket Club has just staged two fund raising events – a Golf Day and a Quiz Night, and five Horsham players have been in the news – Jofra Archer (see elsewhere in this edition of the District Post), Tom Haines, Will Beer, George Garton and Nick Oxley. Haines has successfully opened the batting for Sussex in the four day Championship, while leg-spinner Beer and left arm paceman Garton have bowled well for the county in the Royal London One Day Cup. The pair sent down 16 overs with a wicket apiece against Surrey
and, between them dismissed half the Kent side with Beer seeing off both openers and taking two catches, while Garton ripped the heart out of the middle order, in addition to completing a run out, Sussex Coach Jason Gillespie describing Garton as: “The best fielder in the country”. And, Oxley, hoping to launch his professional career, notched up a 60 for the MCC Young Cricketers against Kent. Horsham play their first competitive game of the season on Sunday when, in a potentially tricky tie, they travel to Brighton & Hove in Round 1 of the ECB National Club Championship. After a Round 1 bye, Roffey enter the competition in Round 2 on Sunday May 12th. Motor racing – Faygate’s five time UK Champion and double World Champion driver John Mickel’s Legends Cars National competition season got underway at John’s favourite track, Brands Hatch, last weekend. And, John is delighted to announce two sponsorship deals – with Race Vans Conversions (RVC), builders of bespoke camper vans for the extreme sports world, and QuikSteel, famous for the world’s strongest epoxy putty. Mickel Motor Racing has also entered into a partnership with Dandelion Farewells after the Wisborough Green company handled the funeral of a close friend of John’s particularly sensitively. Finally, there will be cricket at Southwater’s excellent new ground with friendlies on both Saturday – against West Chiltington & Thakeham CC - and Sunday (versus Billingshurst).
Four goal Horsham anaesthetise impotent Faversham Saturday April 20 – The Bostik League – South East Division Horsham 4 0 Faversham Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham continued their excellent run of form with another win, two goals in each half proving to be far too demanding a challenge for listless Faversham Town, now 17th. And, importantly, the result ensured that Horsham’s much awaited play-off semi final will be at their now increasingly temporary home at Lancing in their bid for promotion into the Isthmian League Premier Division. Horsham began as they meant to proceed, Jack Brivio testing Faversham keeper Will Godman almost straight from the start, and, before ten minutes were on the clock Chris Smith was on hand, but the foray came
to nothing after he failed to offload. But, with a goal looking imminent, the Hornets did not have to wait much longer to open their account, Smith and Lee Harding harrying the defence, three shots between them cul-
The visitors’ plight was made much worse shortly after the re-start minating with a ricochet off Dan Carrington getting past Godman. Smith was soon in action again, but his one on one drive was chested clear by Godman before, with half an hour almost gone, the Harding/Smith combo first saw the woodwork come to
the Kent side’s rescue and then the rebound blocked by Huckle. Horsham, though did score just ahead of the break, when after Harding’s strike was pushed out, George Hayward brought up Horsham’s century of goals from the entirety of their games this season. And, it might have got even better, only for Hayward’s volley to sear the crossbar on its way over, but, trailing by two goals, Faversham had an unlikely looking mountain climb if they were to present a serious reply after the interval. The visitors’ plight was made much worse shortly after the re-start, persistent tormentors Smith and Harding twisting the knife when the duo broke through again, Harding finishing clinically after being supplied by his teammate. Further lax Faversham defending then let Harding in again to capitalise on a bodged clearance, putting
Horsham four ahead in the 54th minute. Although the Hornets did not add to their tally, Godman keeping out Steve Metcalf’s aerial attempt and, with his feet, sub Kieran Lavery’s ground hugging shot, it was all Horsham
as they completed this season’s league double against Faversham, Lavery giving Godman yet another examination while redundant Horsham keeper Joe Mant looked on from the other end

Another win for Horsham – bring on the play-offs ! Photos by John Lines
Monday April 22 – The Bostik League – South East Division Guernsey 1 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s visit to Footes Lane, St Peter Port for their final league game of the season ended happily with victory over bottom of the table Guernsey, extending the Hornets’ unbeaten run to 15 games over the last three months. Horsham led for much of the game, but were pleased – and
slightly relieved – to hear the final whistle after the hosts had scored in the closing minutes. Although Guernsey has to travel to Sittingbourne to try to stave off relegation, they belied their parlous situation 17 places below Horsham, providing worthy opposition for the Hornets. Horsham, though began with promise, Lee Harding supplying onrushing Rob O’Toole, but the resultant strike was off target, as was O’Toole’s subsequent aerial attempt. A further opportunity followed, but, with only Guernsey keeper Callum Stanton to beat, Chris
Smith could only crash Kieran Lavery’s pass onto the crossbar. But, Horsham did soon go in front – in the 21st minute – when Lavery broke through unchallenged, this time Smith making no mistake. Then, Harding and Smith both tested the Guernsey defence before Lavery headed over, and subsequently saw his shot deflected for a corner. However, Guernsey were not submitting, Liam Mahon sending in two attempts, but Horsham led by the single goal at the break. The second half started quietly, until Smith latched onto a
defensive error to no avail and Lavery headed wide, but a goal soon came, Harding intercepting an unwise back pass to get the ball past Stanton. Yet, Horsham’s grip on the game was loosened when dangerous midfielder Carlos Canha unleashed a booming drive to give Guernsey a glimmer of hope, clawing back the deficit in the 88th minute. Alarm bells rang when five minutes of extra time were added and Canha had a free kick at close corners, but Mant was up to the challenge just before time evaporated, Horsham winning 2-1.
In their best showing for 13 season, Horsham end up second (behind Cray Wanderers) and have Saturday off, the fixture against Thamesmead Town having been cancelled after the Dartford based side were obliged to go into liquidation. Through finishing second, the Hornets have the advantage of a home semi final in the play-offs – against either Ashford United or Haywards Heath at Lancing on Monday (29th) at 7.30pm, and, should they reach the final then that game will also be at Lancing on Friday May 3rd, again starting at 7.30pm.

YMCA beat Broadbridge Heath - reversing earlier results
Saturday April 20 - Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 0 3 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA had been beaten by Broadbridge Heath earlier in the season – twice – by 4-1 at the Leisure Centre in September’s RUR Cup first round, and in the league at Gorings Mead just after Christmas, a late goal, the only one of the match, doing the damage. But, this time, after a fortnight’s break, in form YMCA won a fiercely contest encounter in the penultimate game at the forlorn looking Leisure Centre on a dry and bumpy pitch, with the weather hot enough to warrant a drinks stoppage. Early in last Saturday’s game Dan Evans’ shot did not unduly trouble Kieron Thorp in the home goal, before on 15 minutes Tony Nwachukwu was needlessly felled in the area, Dean Bown stepping up to put YM ahead from the spot. An aerial goal kick caught the wind, soaring back behind the goal line for an unrewarded corner and it was all YM, another corner evaporating

harmlessly, Heath’s frustration leading to another foul before Guy Harding’s blast put YM two goals clear just before the mid point of the half. Then, longstanding former Horsham player Lee Carney had a fruitless free kick ahead of a controversially disallowed YM goal, depriving Bown. A rare Heath breakthrough drew a double save from YM keeper Aaron Jeal and, just before the break, Bown deftly trapped a high ball on the sideline, his onrush coming to nought, but YM were two goals to the good at the interval. As anticipated, endeavouring to get back into the game, Heath threw the book at YM on the resumption, earning an immediate corner, a volley scorching the crossbar, but YM withstood the pressure until Dean Carden’s high cross cum shot ballooned over. Then, Jeal dropped the ball but the subsequent Heath goal was disallowed, causing apoplexy in the Heath dugout, which spilled over onto the pitch post match. Nwachukwu beat several defenders to burst through at the other end, but then overran the ball. With action switching again, a very long throw into the mouth of the YM goal was unproductive. Things then got too excitable
on the pitch and touchline, the referee struggling to maintain control and in a frenzied period of play Jack Ryder headed onto the Heath crossbar, shortly followed by a Heath corner being punched clear and Heath firing over. Ryder was working hard in the Heath area, but to no avail and then Mason Doughty fired wide for the hosts. Thorp’s knee kept out Alex Barbary’s strike from Carden’s cross, but, when a Heath goal might have changed the complexion of the game with ten minutes remaining, Devon Fender’s strike was too high. YM, though were still creating opportunities, Nwachukwu being dispossessed when looking dangerous, and Bown being off target. Ryder then supplied Bown, whose left footed shot went wide. Heath kept pressing, but Fender was unable to capitalise from a threatening cross and Doughty unleashed a thunderbolt, which Jeal managed to tip over the bar for a corner, before Doughty struck twice more without success, only for Nwachukwu to break through in a one on one situation, putting the game to bed with YM’s third goal. Nwachukwu then had another opportunity, but was unable to apply the finishing touch, the game ending 3-0 in YM’s favour, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “I’ve congratulated the boys on their good team performance. Going into Tuesday’s game against Crawley Down Gatwick we’re second because of a one goal difference over Newhaven and need to keep winning to have any chance of promotion.” Meanwhile, Broadbridge Heath have one more game to play at the Leisure Centre before ending their 32 year tenure, and after prolonged delay very much look forward to taking over their new ground in good time for next season, a preliminary pitch inspection being planned for May 1st.
Three cracking goals - YMCA are second with a game to go Tuesday April 23 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3 1 Crawley Down Gatwick Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA’s rich vein of form continued with another impressive win, but they had to dig deep after going one nil down against the run of play. YM pressed from the off, Crawley Down Gatwick’s keeper Andy Greaves’ legs keeping out Tony Nwachukwu’s strike, with Alex Barbary’s shot from the rebound just sneaking past the top left corner of the goal. A YM corner followed but Tom Gilbert had to back-pedal and, off balance, headed over. With YM having all of the possession Dean Bown and Greaves raced for the ball, Bown’s attempt going straight at the keeper. CDG then made a rare entry into YM’s half for Marc Pelling to head in a corner in a goal mouth scramble with a quarter of an hour on the clock. YM immediately responded, but, with CDG coming more into the game Ollie Leslie made two incursions, blazing over and then kicking wide, before Michael Wood wasted a free kick. Bown then burst through only to be caught offside, ahead of a CDG corner being safely cleared and YM keeper Aaron Jeal running out to negate an attack. YM turned up the heat, a Luke Gedling free kick almost producing a result before the resultant corner was headed onto the top netting. Jack Hartley was then bundled off the ball, Jack Ryder putting Gedling’s free kick just over. A Billy Wraight
pile driver skimmed Jeal’s bar, until, five minutes before the interval, a pinpoint cross enabled Nwachukwu to head in a classic goal, the teams going into the break one apiece. Re-starting, a YM free kick was blasted just wide, but YM soon took the lead from a beautiful goal, Jack Hartley somehow curling the ball into the top right corner despite the presence of two defenders seemingly blocking his path. Two minutes later Alex Barbary broke through to stroke the ball in, suddenly giving YM a two goal cushion. Bown then induced an athletic one-handed save from Greaves, but CDG were not conceding defeat and unfurled a wave of attacks, their corner following one from YM. Jeal had to punch threats away – twice – before Ollie Broad surged into the box and CDG earned two corners at the death, but with YM defending well the result was not seriously in doubt, YM running out 3-1 winner, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “We scored three cracking goals, our changed format paying dividends in the second half. This was a good game, they chased every ball, but we don’t like being beaten!” With just 15th-placed Langney Wanderers to play (at Gorings Mead on Saturday), YM are second with 82 points behind uncatchable Chichester. Eastbourne Town and Newhaven are third and fourth, each on 80, Buckland adding: “Rumours and counter rumours abound as to the composition of the league above next season and it appears that their will be vacancies, but there are no play-offs, so we need to win again on Saturday and see what happens.”
Book early for this year’s Horsham 10K race and U16 fun run! Running Martin Read - Sports Reporter This year’s Horsham 10K Road Race is at 11am on Sunday June 2nd. Again starting and finishing at Horsham Rugby Club, Race Director Geoff Parker tells the District Post: “The event is part of the Sussex Grand Prix series of races in which points are scored at each participating event, counting towards the championship trophy, attracting club runners from across the whole of Sussex and even further afield. But, each year more than half of the entrants are fun runners and joggers not affiliated to any club – the race is licensed by UK Athletics and open to everybody, it being an ideal race for anyone enjoying Parkruns and now looking to step up to a longer distance.” Entries are limited, creating extra
competition for places, so, to avoid disappointment, it is a good idea to get your entry in without delay! Details of how to enter are shown below - the beauty of the outstanding course - multi-terrain with two laps, mainly on quiet open roads with closures to ensure the safety of all runners, and with country lanes included, together with a woodland bridleway stretch, adds further interest for runners, and it is unlikely that there will be many, if any, places available on the day. There is also an always wellsupported separate traffic free fun run of about 1200 metres, with a 10.15 start, around the rugby pitch for under 16 year olds. In both the main race and for the junior event prizes are awarded to winners in the various categories and every runner in both races will be chip timed and given a memento marking their achievement.
The runs are organised by Horsham Joggers and marshalled by around 80 friendly volunteers, with profits donated to local charities. In 2018 Andrew McCaskill led the field home in the 10km race, completing in 34 minutes 10 seconds. Katie Morgan was the fastest lady in 39.53, but the race is open to and enjoyed by runners of all abilities. Online entries can be made by following the link on www. horshamjoggers.co.uk /horsham10K/, Geoff Parker summing up saying: “Come and join us for a great family experience, we’ve got additional attractions for children, and excellent refreshments, we’re looking forward to another great day at Horsham Rugby Club! This year we are working with new sponsors, the Carfax based law firm DMH Stallard.” Richard
Pollins, Managing Partner of DMH Stallard, says “We are passionate about supporting local activities and want to see our communities, clients and colleagues flourish. So, we are pleased to be sponsoring the Horsham 10K run and wish every runner and family involved
in the race every success during their training and of course during the run itself.” Full details of the races can be found on the Horsham Joggers’ website and there is also an event Facebook page: www.facebook. com/horsham10k/
