However this year, supported by Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, it takes another bound forward introducing a new feature, ‘Horsham-on-Sea’ on the Forum.

A full programme of bandstand music in aid of Samaritans of Horsham & Crawley follows culminating at 2pm, with a set from the Columbia Drug Barons guaranteed to get your toes tapping.

Loxwood Joust once again takes us back to Medieval times in Market Square demonstrating period crafts alongside knightly pursuits.

New to this year’s Market Square camp is ‘Henry the Heartless’ a sword swallower and all are ably supported by those merry men (and woman) of Brock (the) Taylor – perfect for those on a quest for a new castle or something a little less grand.

Storrington’s car enthusiasts, SADCASE, are bringing a collection of British classic cars to the Carfax, accompanied by the ever so slightly heavier Horsham Traction Company engines on the Crown pub corner. Aston Martin owners club Area 16 this time take up residence in East Street with another care-

fully curated display that spans the 007 favourite’s back catalogue.

Find your way to the Forum, aided by some fishy chalk pavement markings, and you will come upon the new ‘Horsham-on-Sea’, offering fun for all. Experience donkey rides, seaside entertainers, have-a-go sand art and children’s activities. Organisers have even commissioned a supply of ‘Horsham Rocks’ rock in partnership with Mr. Simms of West Street and there will be a giant deck chair with a bottle of best British bubbly to be won, picked at random from #selfies by sponsor, The Horsham Cellar of Carfax.

British Food and Drink No Horsham town themed event is complete without something specially in keeping to eat and drink; and Horsham’s Great British Weekend is no exception with some cracking purveyors booked for Horsham’s Markets on Saturday.

The event also has your Sunday lunch all wrapped up with traditional fish & chips on the Forum, a Pie & Mash stall and some medieval fayre from Garlic Wood events on Carfax plus much more to choose from.

Horsham Twins star in ITV show

A new show came to our screens this week and featured 2 Horsham twins taking part in a scientific experiment that looked into how Children from around the world have developed differently dependant on culture, location and landscape.

Planet Child aired on Wednesday at 9pm.

Each episode sees how young Children from different parts of the UK interact without parental supervision as they face a variety of everyday challenges and questions.

The programme led by Chris and Xand Van Tulleken will help us to to see how we may have developed differently if we were given more freedoms when younger and how, as parents, things may pan out for

Children if we occasionaly took an extra step back.

Judah and Darcee Rose, both 7 from Horsham were set the task of navigating themselves from The Imperial War Museum to the London Eye with no help from Mum or Dad. With chaperones around at all times and cameras always fixed on them, they were never in any danger and for Children so young they showed great teamwork, we won’t spoil what happened for you, Mum of the twins, Beccie Rose says, “They did really well, even though they bickered a bit!’

Whilst Judah and Darcee tried to work out how to complete their challenge the programme highlights just how different we are

across the world, throughout the series we see how Japanese school children complete such journeys without a worry and how a 3 year old in Namibia handles a machete with ease.

Fear is also prevalent factor in this show and our local twosome were confronted with a large snake freely slithering around at home.

The thought behind this particular experiment being whether fear comes from Parents, Child or outside influences. Both Children found the snake fascinating where as Beccie wasn’t so sure, “They loved the snake, getting really up close to it, I though, was really unsure !”

St Mary’s CofE School win national computing finals!

A beautiful historic home providing all your care needs A team of seven Year 5 pupils from St Mary’s CofE Primary School in Horsham have won the finals of the PA consulting Raspberry Pi National Competition in London hosted by Maggie Philbin.

After reaching the final for the 5 previous years, the team were determined to turn this attempt into a third finals win.

The competition began with 180 entries and was whittled down to a final 3.

The children had a small budget

of £100 to implement their idea and after a lot of hard work succeeded in creating something on their special raspberry pi computer.

Each year, the competition organisers set a theme for the children to be creative around. This year it was Travel and Transport.

The St Mary’s team developed an idea that aims to encourage Parents living relatively far from the school to drop the Children off at specified drop off points that then meant the Children could walk

into school safely.

You may wonder why the Parents wouldn’t drive the Children directly to the school but current statistics show a high percentage of serious child road traffic accidents happen within 200 metres of a school gate. Therefore the idea of removing congestion around a busy area can only be a good thing.

The team walk away with a cheque for £1,000 for their school.

Lads in drag raise much needed money for Classrooms for Kenya 24 footballers dressed in drag took to the hallowed Trimity rec turf last weekend to raise money for the charity, Classrooms for Kenya.

As previously reported, the event was the idea of Amaya Murphy, a pupil at Weald 6th form.

She was looking to raise funds to help build classrooms for underprivileged schools in Africa and with a trip scheduled for 3 weeks in the Summer she wanted to get the project up and running in a fun way before the hard work in Kenya begins.

With the players donning a variety of skirts, dresses , wigs and more they took to the field ready for action. Kept in check by ref Andy Cooper the game was played in high spirits with charity being

Weald students’ trip to China

The game concluded with a dramatic penalty shootout and saw Elliot Brackpool and Chris Barber pick up awards for best dressed.

Whilst the winning team claimed a bottle of bubbly.

With the initial aim of Amaya being to raise £300 she was amazed to find that the generosity of the local commumity saw the total go over £800.

Once the players had got changed imto something a little more suited to their tastes, they retreated to the Trinity Cricket Club Clubhouse to enjoy a few drinks and some chilli hotdogs.

We look forward to seeing how Amaya gets on in Kenya and wish her all the best.

Over the Easter holidays, 16 Year 10 students embarked on a trip of a lifetime to China, accompanied by teachers Mr Charles and Ms McKenna.

After 14 hours of travelling and a short pitstop in Istanbul, they arrived in Beijing. They were immediately immersed in Chinese culture, enjoyed a hot pot dinner together and then relaxed for the evening in a hotel. The relaxation was short lived as the following day they were all up bright and early to visit the Summer Palace, have a Chinese calligraphy lesson and then head off to catch the bullet train to Luoyang.

On arrival in Luoyang, the students were introduced to their host

families and everyone parted ways to allow them to get to know each other and settle into their new situations. The Weald students spent five nights in a Chinese family’s home and for many this was the highlight of the entire trip. They were given the opportunity to take lessons in a Chinese school and had many excursions planned for them during their days spent there. They particularly enjoyed seeing a Kung Fu show at Shaolin Temple while the sun beamed down. The staff at Luoyang High School treated The Weald students to a Chinese banquet dinner in celebration of the exchange and a great evening was had by all. Parting ways with the host families on the Thursday felt

quite emotional for some, as many new friendships had been formed with promises to stay in touch.

The adventure continued however, with The Weald staff and students next heading to Xi’an, visiting the Terracotta Warriors and seeing the beautiful city lit up at night time around the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda.

Finally, they all headed back to Beijing to visit some popular sights, such as The Great Wall of China, The Temple of Heaven and The Forbidden City. Everyone arrived back at Gatwick airport twelve days later, exhausted but with experiences and memories that will last forever.

Kids raise cash with cakes for Cancer charity With the aim being to raise funds for Shelley Primary School and Sarcoma cancer charity it appears all their hard work paid off as staff parted with a fantastic £161 in just 4 hours, A further £100 was donated by the supermarket itself.

The young ladies were delighted with the success of their cake sale and made thank you cards for the

5 best friends from Broadbridge Heath touched many hearts over the weekend with their charity inspired cake sale.

After reaching out to Tesco in Broadbridge Heath by way of sending a letter to store manager Helen Knight they were invited to attend a meeting where they pitched their fundraising idea.

Initially including cakes and makeovers, it was settled that a cake sale in the staff canteen may be the best way forward.

Speaking to The District Post, Helen said, “I was just taken aback by the letter I received and felt that I needed to embrace what the girls wanted to do. They are such lovely girls and are a credit to their Parents.”

Deemed a “phenomenal success” Ms Knight also mentioned just how much the Tesco staff enjoyed the baked delights, “The girls set up in the staff restaurant and sold so many to our team. A lot of cakes were eaten on lunch breaks that day!”

They have touched a lot of hearts with their selfless little initiative Tesco Management to show their gratitude for being allowed to sell their cakes at the store The total rose again as an after school sale on Monday took the amount raised to £359.

Rusper May Day Fun Run Returns It is with much excitement that the Friends of Rusper Primary School (FORPS) are proud to announce the return of the Rusper May Day Family Fun Run this coming Monday (6 May)! The run involves a one lap off-road course and will start prompt at 12:30pm.

Since the start of this academic year, Rusper Primary School has been opening its gates early to enable pupils and their parents or carers to complete a daily mile by running or walking laps of the school field before school each day.

“Up until 2014 there was a Rusper May Day run that took place every year as part of the annual village celebration.

Since then it has been hugely missed so knowing that Rusper is home to a number of keen runners including many of the parents and pupils of Rusper Primary School it seemed the right time for

the May Day run to make a return.” – Nikki Rooney, Chair of FORPS. The fun run will take place on private land adjacent to Rusper Sports Club. The approximately 1km course is perfect for children and adults alike who fancy running or walking the sloped terrain. Registration costs £5 per person and includes race number, medal and goody bag. The event is limited to just 100 places (for adults and children) and is expected to sell out fast. Forster makes the right moves At the annual Collyer’s Chess Club Awards, Matthew Forster was presented with the prestigious and coveted Chess Board trophy, having won a hard fought Collyer’s Chess Championship 2019. The prize for “Best Team Player” was awarded to Adam Palmer.

The Collyer’s Chess Club, run by gifted maths teacher, Alex Taylor, a highly rated junior chess champion in his own right, has gone from strength to strength this year.

In addition to running the Collyer’s Chess Championship, the Chess Club has a very strong team, which has competed successfully against top schools, colleges and universities across the region over the past year.

Alex Taylor said: “From playing in a college league, against the Horsham Juniors, and against universities, the chess team have represented the college brilliantly. It’s great to see how enthusiastic the students have been to play chess. The future looks very bright indeed and we are already looking forward to next season.”

Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, said: “Massive thanks to Alex Taylor for all of his hard work running Chess at Collyer’s over the past couple of years – he’s had a hugely positive impact. Climate Emergency Campaign Reaches Local Elections

Candidates in the local council elections across West Sussex have been pledging their support for a Climate Emergency declaration in response to a new grass roots campaign.

Voters are being urged to ‘Vote for Climate Action’ this Thursday, by backing candidates who are in favour of decisive action on climate change.

The South East Climate Alliance, a coalition of community, faith and environmental groups,

has been approaching candidates in the District and Borough Councils to ask their support for urgent climate action by their council should they be elected.

Coordinator Dr Sally Barnard said: “We are an alliance of grass roots organisations from across the South East. We have grown from 14 groups to nearly 40 in the space of three months. People across all of our communities are waking up to the fact that climate change is the most urgent

issue of our times. We want our local councils to recognise their responsibility and take urgent action on behalf of all their residents. We cannot delay any longer.”

So far, there have been pledges of support for the campaign from 33 candidates in 19 wards across Horsham, Chichester, Arun and Worthing. The candidates are from across the political spectrum.

Dr Barnard stressed that the South East Climate Alliance was avoiding a party political approach. The aim is to bring climate change into the spotlight as a central issue for councils: “Ultimately, councillors from all parties need to work together on this. We need action on a massive scale, and at every level of government.”

The campaign for District and Borough Councils to declare a Climate Emergency echoes calls to take action at a national level and builds on the success of earlier efforts to encourage West Sussex County Council to step up its climate efforts. In front of a public gallery packed with campaigners, the County Council voted unanimously on April 5 to back a motion setting a target for the Council becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

Schools Announced for Unique Creative Project

West Sussex Music is delighted to announce the first of the schools who will be taking part in Here, Our Song, a songwriting project for The Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, in partnership with Horsham District Schools, Horsham District Council, Emily Barden and sponsored by Berkeley Homes.

A unique creative project, the Here, Our Song songbook will be collaboratively written by, about and for Horsham District primary school children. Forming a cultural legacy, the content for the songbook will be created by children across the region during a series of school workshops with West Sussex Music project partner Emily Barden. The inclusion of the songs in the songbook will ensure that they are sung and enjoyed, for many years to come. This resource will be made freely available to all Horsham District primary schools by the end of 2019.

All Saints CE Primary School in Horsham, Castlewood Primary School in Southwater, North Heath Community Primary School in Horsham, Northolmes Junior School in Horsham, Steyning Primary School and Upper Beeding Primary School will be the first of the schools to work on this exciting project; with workshops beginning in the summer term. West Sussex Music received applications from primary schools across the Horsham district, and the successful participating schools were selected by a panel from Horsham District Council and West Sussex Music. There will be a further opportunity for other schools to take part in this project and details will follow shortly.

“Singing is at the very core of music-making and personal expression. West Sussex Music already works with 280 schools across the county through its Singing Strategy – giving opportunities for schools to come together and

perform through our programme of singing events. The “Here, Our Song” songbook project is an exciting chance for children in the District to create a lasting legacy of original songs for future generations of pupils.” James Underwood, Chief Executive, West Sussex Music.

Team PMW getting their walking MacMan – Your Local boots on for 50km challenge Apple Tech Experts

A team from Billingshurst-based marketing agency PMW Communications is putting on walking boots to complete a 50km trek in memory of a former staff member at its client Rudridge.

The challenge will see PMW’s Managing Director Peter Sutton, Director Tracie Carter, Senior Account Managers Lizzie Moyse and Jackie Stainer, Copywriter Kate Clifford, Account Executive Nicky

Riordan, and Account Management Administrator Eva White, start the 10-hour walk from Southwater on Saturday 22 June. The team will trek across various terrains and through several Sussex and Surrey villages before crossing the finish line at Rudridge’s depot in Farnham.

The walkers will receive a hero’s welcome and be treated to a celebration of home-cooked food

served by volunteers from Rapid Relief – a charitable organisation that provides catering support to the UK’s emergency services.

Tony Marshall, who worked at Rudridge’s Farnham branch for many years, suffered a fatal stroke in 2016 and ‘The F.A.S.T. Road to Rudridge’ charity walk is raising much needed funds for the Stroke Association, which aims to raise awareness of symptoms (face, arms, speech, time), as well as support survivors.

Peter Sutton commented: “Rudridge has been a longstanding client of ours, so we’re delighted to be giving something back by helping their team honour the memory of their much-loved colleague. We’ve been training hard and we’re all looking forward to joining our fellow walkers to complete the challenge and raise money for a fantastic charity.”

We’re going to tackle the issue of Wi-Fi blackspots. We use the internet each day, every day and we just expect it to work. Sadly, when it doesn’t it causes havoc, no more social updates, intermittent emails, no Google searches, music streaming services no longer function.

Smaller premises can typically get by with a standard wi-fi router provided by their internet provider, this is often free and sufficient.

Larger premises, however, need a better solution to provide great coverage. There are a few options out there that can help and we’d like to run through those now.

If you require advice or need help setting up your network please give us a shout and we’ll chat through your options.

Wi-Fi Extenders Netgear, TPLink, Linksys all manufacture wi-fi extenders. They work by connecting to your existing wi-fi network and attempting to push this wi-fi signal further afield by effectively repeating the signal. They can work well in certain environments but often bad positioning and specifi-

cation make them a poor solution.

Setup can be confusing and often you end up with multiple wi-fi networks which is annoying. They cost around £15 - £50 spec dependent.

Powerline Adapters This is pretty clever tech and has been around for years. Powerline extenders make use of your existing electrical wiring by sending data through one end and spitting out Wi-Fi the other. Performance is dependent on the age of your wiring and setup can be a bind and as above often Wi-Fi network names. They cost around £25 - £50 spec dependent.

Wi-Fi Mesh Extenders Mesh extenders have always typically been reserved for larger enterprises. This tech has now finally filtered down to the consumer and companies like Ubiquity now offer superbly spec’d mesh extenders at very reasonable prices. They also look amazing and of course, there’s an App to manage your network and oversee things. Mesh devices are the most reliable and future proof but do cost more, typically around £100 to £300 dependent on the coverage required.

Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher is the third generation to uphold the connection between his family and Southwater Sports Club, after his grandfather originally gifted land for use of the cricket club, believed to be in the 1870s. The local community continues to derive benefit from that long-standing relationship, which has led to provision of the

new facilities, which will be in use imminently.

John Mickel happy with Brands Hatch opener

Motor Racing Martin Read - Sports Reporter Faygate record holding driver John Mickel is pursuing his sixth UK title, to add to his two world championships, and got underway at his favourite track, Brands Hatch, over the Easter

Weekend with a handy 3rd placing at the end of the new season’s first UK Nationals Legends meeting.

John said: “The competition was always going to be tough with some strong contenders returning to the field this year. With only 14 rounds it is important to maintain

consistency and maximise points where possible.” And, as ever, there was no shortage of action on the track, resulting in shunts and knocks for all three drivers in John’s team, keeping the crew of mechanics busy. But, fortunately John narrowly missed a huge crash, which brought out the red

flag in the weekend’s last race – at the famous first Paddock Hill bend, when on the opening lap of the final, Will Gibson engaged in a spectacular roll, miraculously escaping unscathed. And, in his shiny silver fresh-liveried QuikSteel car – Number 4 - John Mickel certainly was consistent, finishing every race and collecting the overall third place trophy at the meeting. With plenty of forthcoming opportunities to move up the table, he is placed just 20 points behind the runner up and 60 from the leader.

Horsham teen’s debut for Great Britain Hockey Team Ardingly College is thrilled at the news that Alex Malzer, who left the school last summer, has recently made her debut for Great Britain’s hockey team.

The 18-year-old from Horsham played a fearless and brave game last month. At one point, being squeezed by several Americans near the baseline and in an increasingly tight space, she delivered a delicate flick, with a twist of the stick, to find a team-mate.

Not that Malzer will necessarily recall the moment: “It went by so quickly and it’s hard to remember the main parts of the match but what an experience!”

For Richard Lane, Ardingly College’s Director of Hockey, her skilful performance wasn’t a surprise: “Her outstanding quality is her flair, you never quite know what she is going to do. To those close to her we knew she had the potential to go a long way, but I’m not quite sure anyone would have predicted her to get to the top quite as quickly as she has.

“Alex always had a fun and outgoing personality, but her determination always shone through in competitive situations. In her play, she had a burst of pace and very good hands, especially with

3D and lifted skills. At school she showed herself to be a talented sportswoman, also playing for the England Independent Schools football team. At Ardingly College, she was a keen member of our Elite Sports Programme and she worked hard with Matt Wren, our strength and conditioning coach, as well as benefitting from our one-on-one sessions with our hockey professionals, including Arjan Drayton-Chana who plays in the GB Development Squad and Stephane Vehrle-Smith, the Brazilian Olympian.”

Whilst at college, Malzer also had the opportunity to train and play for East Grinstead, where players such as Laura Unsworth proved great role models and were wonderfully instrumental in her development.

Richard Lane praised the combination of her talent, hard work, and energy to grasp all opportunities. “At Ardingly College, we are all very proud of what she has achieved so far, and look forward to seeing her progress over the years to come.”

Now, she is in the frame for selection for Team GB Women’s Olympic hockey defence in 2020.

Horsham drop out of the National Cup Sunday April 28 England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship – Round 1 Home walk over for Brighton & Hove Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham won the National Cup at Lord’s in 2005, but early season non availability obliged them to concede their National Cup game against Brighton & Hove, due to be played at the coast, without a ball bowled last Sunday, the 4th team being unable to field a side in the league the day before.

However, on Saturday Horsham’s 3rd XI had a very tight finish, being narrowly defeated by visiting Selsey on the main ground at Cricketfield Road.

sham bowled them out for 179, skipper Mark Haines taking 4-32 and James Brehaut 2-30.

Replying, Horsham were in deep trouble until the same pair, Brehaut and Haines, came together with a determined last wicket stand of 52 – the highest partnership of the match. Brehaut ended unbeaten on 31, but Horsham fell just eight runs short with seven balls remaining when Haines, watched by his Sussex cricketer son Tom (who had been scheduled to play in Horsham’s cup game at Brighton), was dismissed for 19.

In blustery Storm Hannah induced conditions, Horsham pulled off a remarkable double hat trick of successive Bob Rogers Cup Final triumphs, East Grinstead last Saturday, culminating their season with nine wins on the trot in League and Cup. It may not have been a vintage barn-storming Horsham display, but perhaps that might have been expected at the end of a long hard season, especially as Horsham had rested several first team regulars against lower ranked Hastings & Bexhill. However, Horsham’s much-changed side, the alien weather hampering their normal fluency, nevertheless delivered another commanding Green &

Whites’ win. The game, though, opened with Horsham defending some spirited Hastings attacks, until, in the third minute, a turnover ball allowed Aaron Linfield to break, with supporting Mathieu Pecharman scoring, Joe Wilde converting; the same kicker soon forgoing a penalty opportunity. Hastings then had a penalty of their own, narrowing Horsham’s lead to just four points, but that was the beginning and end of their success. Just after the half way mark, following multiple phases, Pecharman finished off another try, well converted by Wilde, before Johnny Whiting got over, capitalising on a good session of Horsham play, and although this went unconverted, Horsham went into the break leading 19-3.

Resuming, Hastings had two penalties, but failed to grasp these chances. Horsham took the opportunity to introduce five changes in personnel, until, in the 63rd

minute, Josh Earle got over the line in support of a strong trademark carry by Declan Nwachukwu. The kick went astray, but with Horsham now leading 24-3, further substitutions were made in the Horsham line up, and the Green & Whites were not quite done, Jordan Bell adding Horsham’s final try with Wilde converting to give Horsham their relatively straightforward 31-3 victory, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “The performance today did not reach the heights that we have seen in recent weeks. After the emotional high of securing promotion, multiple changes and more disappointingly, a possible touch of complacency, we only managed to deliver a spluttering performance.

In the face of a motivated Hastings & Bexhill side playing in their first Bob Rogers Cup Final, we did not look after the ball enough, and lacked some physicality at the breakdown and in the tackle. That said, when we scored good tries and ultimately this was the difference between both sides - our ability to convert opportunities presented.”

Stocker continued: “Regardless of the performance, it was a great way to end the season - securing the Bob Rogers Cup for a 6th successive time (surely there are precedents that the cup can now be kept?!) on top of promotion to London 1, rendering the 1st XV ineligible to defend the trophy next season with the Lions needing to step up to do the honours. If their recent performance at London Irish, when they won 17-44, is anything to go by, (notching up five successive wins), they will surely do the club proud next year. Man of the match was awarded to a player progressing fantastically well this season following his elevation from last year’s colts - Josh Earle. His energy, work rate and technical ability in the scrum coalface were excellent. He is a real prospect and one that we look forward to working with further. Meanwhile, we say farewell to Mathieu Pecharman on his return to France after showing his talents on the wing - his two tries today were a great way to sign off and we look forward to saying a proper good bye during the player awards night set for 24th May.”

Bex Ross gave Horsham the lead with an early short corner goal and they maintained their advantage up to the break.

But, Louise Corkill equalised for Leeds soon after the restart, and

with neither side making a further break through, the game went into a penalty shoot out, which the Yorkshire side won 1-3, earning them a bonus point, just sufficient to gain them promotion.

It could have gone either way, but Horsham lost on shuffle penalties. Although disappointing, of course, it is not a disaster – to have gone up would have meant that every match would have been very tough next season, so another term in the Conference will give our young, 16-17, year old stars a chance to develop even further.”

Another win secures YMCA runner up spot

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their final game of the season, victorious again Horsham YMCA posted their 11th win from their last 12 games, during which they have scored 34 points out of a possible 36, placing them second behind runaway leaders Chichester City, who were surprisingly beaten 4-1 by third-in-the table Eastbourne Town in East Sussex.

At Gorings Mead on Saturday YM had early corners, left and right, followed by an excellent build up, but the first real shot of the game went wide, before Alex Barbary was off target from just outside the area.

But, moments later, mid way through the first half, Langney keeper Dan Hutchins could only parry the ball to

the lurking Barbary, who tapped in.

After Dean Bown had blazed over, YM had three corners in quick succession, Guy Harding heading the second one over, ahead of Jack Hartley’s scorcher whizzing over the crossbar.

Wave after wave of YM attacks were unleashed, Luke Gedling coming closest to scoring with a long range shot just past the post. Then, ten minutes before the break Langney’s first attempt on goal was very wayward, but Jack Ryder had to be at his very best, with an excellent defensive clearance keeping the visitors at bay. With half time approaching, Ryder fired from a distance, but Hutchins safely gathered, Tony Nwachukwu subsequently ballooning over from the right, YM leading 1-nil at the break.

Five minutes into the second half Gedling shaved the crossbar, but Langney were showing more determination, first Joe Summerbell shooting over, then Gary Ingham - even higher. Bown got through on the left, the ball going off for a wasted corner, but he subsequently sent the ball across

the face of the goal for Nwachukwu to convert from close range, celebrated by two of his aerial backward summersaults. But, YM’s second goal only served to galvernise Langney, who suddenly looked altogether more threatening, earning two corners in quick succession, interspersed with aerial volleys at either end. A close quarter YM free kick went begging and then another Langney corner was caught by Aaron Jeal in the YM goal.

Langney, though, were not to be denied, lax defending allowing Ingham to score from just yards out. Having controlled the game, YM suddenly looked vulnerable. However, Bown nearly settled matters, but put Hartley’s cross just past the post before Barbary’s shot found Hutchins’ arms.

Nwachukwu got through on the right, but, with YM committed in defence, there was nobody in front of goal to receive his supply. In the jittery closing stages Langney were mercifully off target, then Jeal could only push out an attack and the ball went into the net, but the alert linesman signalled offside. With nothing at stake for them, 15th- placed Langney were relaxed and ready to have a go at anything in their attempt to grab a share of the points, or even a shock victory, but YM kept them out to win 2-1, somewhat relieved YM Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “This has been a long, hard season – this was our fiftieth game – and I told the boys that out of all of those games, this is the one we really had to win – with Eastbourne Town and Newhaven breathing down our necks we would have been fourth if we hadn’t won, it was that tight. We’ve done our best and can do no more now, the structure of the leagues will shuffle downwards, so we’ll just have to wait to see what happens.” After their excellent season, Horsham YMCA’s Awards Night celebration starts at 7pm in the evening at the Gorings Mead ground this Saturday.

Dan Evans makes his 300th appearance for YMCA Football Martin Read & Tim Hewlett - Sports Reporter Last Saturday’s Southern Combination Football League Premier Division match against Langney Wanderers at YMCA’s Horsham Family Lawyers’ Stadium at Gorings Mead marked a triple century of games for YM by left back Dan Evans. Dan joined the club in 2012, making his debut in a league match against Crowborough Athletic. YM Manager Peter Buckland paid tribute saying: “Congratulations to Dan for making his 300th appearance for YM, every game has been during my time at the club. He has been loyal, dependable and a first class footballer, possibly the most reliable player I have ever managed in so much as he always gives 100% and is definitely a ‘club’ man. The measure of Dan is

his team mates’ opinion of him - they all hold him in high regard.” Speaking to the District Post Dan said: “I’ve really enjoyed my 7 years at the club and thank Bucks for keeping on picking me!”

With players increasingly mobile and frequently moving from club to club, Peter Buckland added: “Just over a year ago our Captain against Langney Wanderers – Dean Carden - notched up his 400th game for YM and it’s a testament to the family spirit that we’ve fostered at the club that here we have two outstanding players who’ve now completed well over 700 games, so often in the same team together – a remarkable statistic and I hope Dan and Dean carry on for many more games.” Our photograph shows Dan Evans with Manager Peter Buckland and Chairman Geoff Foreman before the Langney Wanderers match.

Horsham YMCA Under 23s win their league !

Congratulations to the Horsham YMCA U23s who have clinched the Southern Combination Football League U23 West Division title.

The Club commented “Hats off to their Management team - Dave Jeal, Dan Redman and Mark Pavlovic – and, of course to the boys.

As a community club YM are very proud of this young squad of local, mostly Horsham based lads, and their achievement is even more impressive when it is remembered that the core of the team is last year’s U21 squad, most of whom were eligible to play at U18 level at the time. At the U21 level the squad won the first ever SCFL U21 Cup competition and they finished runners-up in the SCFL U21s (West) Division, too - and a year on they have gone one better by winning the U23 Division!”

This season’s winning team triumphed in 15 of their 20 games and were beaten just twice. And, the side has become something of an impressive conveyor belt

with many of the players in the U23 squad now regularly making appearances in Horsham YMCA’s senior side, which, in an excellent season for the Club finished in second place in the SCFL Premier Division.

A club spokesman said: “This is a great story of young local, talent being nurtured and encouraged and represents the YMCA ethos in action!” The title was clinched last Thursday evening at Pagham, where a good number of loyal YM supporters made the trip to be rewarded by seeing the U23s run out four-nil winners. Leading by two own goals in the first half YM rounded off the evening with goals from Bradley Ross (82 mins) and Rhyse Nash (87 mins), the line up being: Jack Webb-Olley, Aaron Ryder, Ashley Wadhams, Calum Kelly, Patrick Gibbs, Mitchell Clarke, Jack Ryder, Leon Eales, Bradley Ross, Callum Nash, George Hole.

The substitutes, who all had game time on the night, were: Rhyse Nash, Chris Maxted and Jake Meli.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Over 500 spectators – Horsham’s biggest ever crowd at Culver Road, Lancing – attended Monday’s promotion Semi Final.

Horsham supporters were rewarded with a commanding win for the Hornets, their sixth success on the bounce, particularly satisfying because Haywards Heath, fielding some former Horsham players, had

triumphed in both of the sides’ league matches earlier in the season. Heath came into the game on the back of a 5-0 walloping on their trip to Ashford United (who went on to beat Hastings in the other promotion semi), whereas Horsham were fresher having had a break the previous Saturday following Thamesmead Town’s withdrawal from the league. On Monday four ex Horsham players were in action against the Hornets, with Horsham introducing changes from their line up at Guernsey, and Horsham made the early running with Harvey Sparks firing marginally wide and

Lee Harding just unable to latch onto a set piece. Another free kick found Rob O’Toole, but the striker went too aerial. With Horsham calling the shots a goal would not be long delayed, and after O’Toole’s contact had been denied by a late deflection, the prolific Harding gave the Hornets the lead mid way through the first half.

And, it might promptly have got even better, but Heath recovered from a defensive lapse to thwart O’Toole’s attempt. Horsham, though, remained in control, but a repeat foray saw Chris Smith blaze over, and another effort from the striker being rather

desperately gathered by former Horsham goalkeeper Anthony Ender.

Resuming 1-0 up, Horsham continued in similar vein, O’Toole, Tyrell-Richardson-Brown, Harding and Smith all testing Heath’s defence, until, in the 64th minute, an impressive build up enabled O’Toole to crash the ball in, tightening Horsham’s grip on the all-important game. With toothless Heath looking done for, Harding almost put the game beyond all possible doubt, but with the constantly exposed Ender beaten, the firm strike just evaded the goal. then induced a full-stretch denial from Ender, who was then called upon to pull off an equally impressive save from Jack Brivio’s close range header. However, Horsham were not to be deprived of further success, RichardsonBrown volleying in Lavery’s cross to propel the Hornets into the Play-off Final against Ashford United, who had twice been in arrears against Hastings in their Semi, but recovered, an extra time penalty on the two hour mark clinching the Kent side’s appearance in Friday’s big game at Lancing, 7.30 kick off.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In their final appearance at the Leisure Centre, Broadbridge Heath signed off with a re-

sounding 5-nil win in the local derby against Loxwood, leaving the visitors in 17th place.

Mason Doughty got Heath off to an ideal start with a goal in the second minute, following up with another just before the mid point of the first half. Then, with the interval beckoning, Andrew Waddingham gave Heath a comfortable three goal cushion going into the interval. Ten minutes after the restart George Cousins

further increased Heath’s lead, before Waddingham put the icing on the cake with his second and Heath’s fifth on the stroke of normal time.

And, last Saturday, on a visit to the Mill Road ground, beside the Arun in their last game of a most encouraging season, Heath had an even more convincing win, putting six goals past hapless Arundel. Three Heath players each scored twice: Ryan Brack-

pool opening Heath’s account mid way through the first half, with Jamie Taylor adding another goal five minutes later, putting Heath two up at the break. And, it was all Heath in the second half, with Taylor then Brackpool putting the result well beyond Arundel’s reach before Devon Fender completed the hosts’ misery with two late goals. Heath finished their campaign in a highly creditable sixth position,

while Arundel, on level points with Eastbourne United, but shaded on goal difference, ended up in the penultimate berth, above basement club Shoreham (20th).

In their centenary year Broadbridge Heath now look forward to taking over and preparing their new ground, adjacent to the Leisure Centre, for the 2019-20 season.
