Tories lose 13 seats yet retain control of district Last Friday saw the count for local council elections take place and after the farce of Brexit, ex pectations were low for turnout. Last time local elections were held, the National average turnout was just 35% compared to 72% for the EU referendum. This time out those stats were mirrored in Horsham as once again the public stayed away from aiming to help change their local area. As in previous years the Conservative party managed to hold the majority of council seats, however much like the National results this was at a cost as they lost 13 seats, mainly to a resurgent Liberal Democrats who ended the count holding 13 seats. The Green party were rightfully proud of their achievements as they won their first Horsham District Council seats taking one of the two available in the ward of Steyning and Ashurst with Robert Platt elected and one of the two avaiable in Bramber, Upper Beading and Woodmancote through Michael Croker. Labour failed to make impact in an election that was being widely seen, Nationwide, as a chance to make up ground on the Conserva-

tives however with the District fundamentally being a Conservative stronghold they ended the election with the same number of seats as they started, 0. Brexit aside, the poor turnout may also be attributed to people just not knowing what they were voting for or simply not knowing an election was happening. Polling cards were dropped through thousands of letterboxes alomg with many candidates going door to door or dropping pamphlets through letterboxes so the reminder was there but with a distinct lack of media coverage compared to other elections it was simply just forgotten. So what were you voting for? These elections decided who runs the local authorities. In total there are 343 Councils in England of which 248 had elections held. You were voting for who represents the area you live in at Council level. You may have seen or heard various candidates discussing policy and wondered why they didn’t cover something that you feel needs to be acted upon, that could be because it actually falls out of

No Incinerator 4 Horsham intends to appoint a London-based Planning Barrister from Landmark Chambers The campaign No Incinerator 4 Horsham (Ni4H) has started Go Fund Me for a barrister and technical experts, to robustly represent residents, at the Public Inquiry, who oppose plans to build a huge commercial and industrial incinerator in rural Horsham. Ni4H Chairman, Peter Catchpole, explained: “Residents are always at a huge disadvantage, when it comes to getting expert support to help them fight complex planning applications like the proposed incinerator in Horsham. Developers always have very deep pockets to fund professional advocacy for their plans, which local communities do not. As a group of concerned local people, we are organising ourselves so that we can fundraise to buy specialist expertise to continue to make our case in opposing the building of an incinerator in Horsham at the upcoming Public

Inquiry. We are asking our supporters to help us by making donations, so that we can get the best possible legal representative to act for us and capitalise on the first-rate case we have to present on behalf of local residents.” Ni4H Vice-Chairman, Kevin Slatter, said: “In a time where there is growing awareness around our environment and air quality, with pledges from national and international governments to reduce carbon emissions and to tackle air quality affecting our health, it just seems the wrong time to build further incineration plants. Whether its ‘Global warming’ or your ‘Health’, incineration is taking us in the wrong direction. An incineration plant would be with us for the next 30-40 years so NOW is the RIGHT time to make the RIGHT decision.”

West Sussex County Council congratulates Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of their son

West Sussex County Council is joining the chorus of celebration at the announcement of the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first child. The baby boy was born at

5.26am on Monday 6 May, and is seventh in line to the throne after his father. West Sussex County Council Chairman, Janet Duncton, said: “On behalf of the County Council, may I offer our sincerest congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of their first child. “Their visit last year was a huge spectacle, which attracted hundreds of well-wishers, and we look forward to welcoming the family to the county again soon.” Every new child born in West Sussex is entitled to a Gruffalo ‘My first library card’ and, to mark the occasion, West Sussex Libraries will create one for the Royal Couple’s baby son. Mrs Susan Pyper, HM LordLieutenant of West Sussex, said: “I am delighted to hear of the

safe arrival of the Duke and Duchess’s new baby son. I know that many people throughout West Sussex will want to join me in sending sincere and warm congratulations to the Duke and Duchess, and our good wishes as they enjoy the excitement of being new parents.” The Duke and Duchess visited West Sussex in October last year, shortly before announcing they were expecting. They visited Chichester, where they were shown the rare Sussex copy of the American Declaration of Independence, which is kept in the West Sussex Record Office. The couple then officially opened the University of Chichester’s Engineering and Digital Technology Park in Bognor Regis and were again greeted by jubilant crowds.

This is one of the most successful musicbased courses we’ve run at Collyer’s. Students have particularly loved the balance of team work with independent projects and the course’s practical relevance to today’s music industry, with a clear progression to further education and a wide variety of music careers.” Collyer’s Vice Principal (Quality and Curriculum) said: “Huge congratulations to the teachers and students for this wonderful performance. They are an absolute credit to Collyer’s. A really high note to end the year on!” The Music Practitioners course is its second year at Collyer’s, and comprises a range of contemporary units that cover areas such as: live sound, studio sound, live performance, sequencing and music careers. Students raise more than 13k for St Catherine’s Hospice Local students have collectively raised more than £13,000 for terminally ill people, as part of St Catherine’s Hospice Youth Enterprise Project (YEP). Designed to develop students’ business skills, YEP challenged students to unleash their inner entrepreneurs. It asked them to organise fundraising events that would raise a minimum of £1,500 for St Catherine’s, with the support of 12 business mentors from NatWest who also sponsored the project. NatWest gave the students £50 as an initial investment and supported them as they worked on their fundraising. The pupil’s amazing achievements were recognised at an awards ceremony last month (25 April) at Christ’s Hospital School. The ceremony gave five teams of pupils from Hazelwick School and Thomas Bennett Community College in Crawley, and Tanbridge House School in Horsham, the chance to showcase their fundraising ideas to a judging panel in a bid to win an award. Pupils were also supported by family, friends and teachers, as well as Trustees from St Catherine’s and senior NatWest staff. Innovative presentations show-

cased varied fundraising ideas including bake and hot chocolate sales, refreshment stands, film nights and even designing and making a bespoke phone holder at school to name a few! Schools scooping an award on the night included: Hazelwick School - Most money raised Hazelwick School - Most pounds per pupil Thomas Bennett Community College - Best presentation Caterham Team 2- Most innovative fundraising idea Sophie Peckham, Community and Events Fundraising Manager at St Catherine’s, said: “It was fantastic to hear the innovative ways our schools raised money for us with the support of their NatWest mentors. I hope they’re as proud of themselves as we are of them. Without our supporters, we wouldn’t be able to care for local terminally ill people when it’s needed most. And it’s great to engage with younger members of our community to help them understand more about the work we do caring for local people and their families. “The awards night was really inspiring and the efforts of all the

young people involved will make a huge difference to the people we care for. I’d like to thank all our school teams, their teachers, parents and NatWest mentors for making YEP such a great success!

I’d also like to thank Christ’s Hospital School for allowing us to host the awards there.” If you are interested in finding out how your school can get involved in YEP next year, please

Students call for more support for overseas charity project.

Help at Home The students from The Weald School in Billingshurst, are raising money for the school’s charity project ‘Classrooms for Kenya’, which was originally set up more than 10 years ago by Weald pupils. Classrooms for Kenya aims to raise money to supply the materials for old school buildings to be converted into brick-built classrooms for pupils in Kenya to enjoy a better quality of education. The project has received a £250 boost from housebuilder Bellway, the developer building homes off East Street in the village. Jordan Sladden, International Coordinator for The Weald School, said: “Our students have worked really hard to raise money for the Classrooms for Kenya project through a variety of fundraising acts, to achieve our aim of securing more permanent, safe classrooms for Kenyan schoolchildren. “The school has been raising money for this project since 2006, building over 70 new classrooms for over 20 different Kenyan schools in that time, and our pupils

feel strongly about the project as it’s a very relatable subject for school students. “We would like to thank Bellway for their kind donation towards the overall total and hope this will encourage others to do the same.” Housebuilder Bellway is building a collection of two to five-bedroom homes near The Weald School at its Amblehurst Green development, off East Street in Billingshurst. Natalie Hughes, Sales Manager for Bellway South London, said: “We were very keen to support the Classrooms for Kenya project as soon as we learned of it, so all the credit has to go to Oscar Milne, the student at The Weald School who first brought this to our attention. “We hope that our support of the project will help to attract more donations which will help the students here achieve their ongoing goal of providing more safe learning environments for Kenyan schoolchildren.” For more information on the Classrooms for Kenya project, visit classroomsforkenya.org.uk

St Catherine’s Hospice to Schools awarded for being autism aware host free session for carers Next week, during national Dying Matters Week, St Catherine’s Hospice, alongside Carers Support West Sussex, is hosting a free question and answer session for local carers. Taking place on Tuesday 14 May between 2.30pm and 4pm, the session, in the cinema room at Skylark House Care Home, will give carers in the local community a chance to hear from St Catherine’s nurses, expertly trained in end of life care. St Catherine’s understands that when someone you love is ill it affects every aspect of your life. And they know how difficult it can be becoming a carer for a loved one. It’s not uncommon to have questions or to be unsure of who can help you, so hospice nurses

will be on hand to offer people practical advice and answer their questions. They will also be answering important questions like; What is Advance care planning all about? What are the changes you might expect to see as someone approaches death? What is a Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation? To help people feel more prepared when caring for someone coming towards the end of their life. Staff from Carers Support West Sussex will talk about their services and the support available to carers too. To book your place, please call Carers Support West Sussex on: 0300 028 8888.

West Sussex schools have been recognised for the excellent work they do to support pupils with autism. In total, 13 schools received an Autism Aware Award from West Sussex County Council’s Autism and Social Communication Team at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley, on Wednesday, 24 April 2019. Schools can achieve bronze, silver or gold standard for demonstrating an effective whole-school approach to supporting their students with autism and social communication disorders. Richard Burrett, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills at West Sussex County Council, said: “Schools achieved the award because of the way they integrate their students with an autism spectrum condition. They have high aspirations and expectations for their students.” Daniel Wakeford, who has autism

and starred in hit TV show The Undateables, was one of two special guests. He was interviewed by his dad to provide an understanding of his life, including his UK-wide tour and previous experiences before singing a song from his new album. Photographer Joe James then spoke about overcoming the difficulties he faced growing up with undiagnosed autism and showed how he is raising awareness of the condition through his nature photography. Both were very well received. Gold winners: Oak Grove College, Worthing Silver winners: Downlands Community College, Durrington Infant and Junior schools, Holbrook Primary School, Northlands Wood Primary Academy, Oaks Primary Academy, Upper Beeding Primary School. Bronze winners: Alternative Provision College, Arunside Primary

Horsham Jeweller shares wealth of knowledge russ bedford Step into Sakakini in Horsham and not only will you find a vast array of high quality jewellery, you are likely to also be instantly greeted by one of the town’s most charismatic business owners, Dominic Sakakini. With a wealth of experience in the trade behind him Dominic has one simple aim, to bring the public quality diamonds at wholesale prices. With the ability to pass on sound advice, help you find a bargain and restore Family heirlooms, he has made Sakakini the first place to go when considering high quality diamonds and jewellery It is with that knowledge and experience that Dominic now brings his skills to you at a special event held on May 16th at The Anchor Hotel. Speaking with him, he tells The District Post, “This event is there to help you turn your boot sale bargains into serious cash. We have all been at boot sales, found something relatively cheap and been quite impressed with our discovery, we have all found that item in the loft and then thrown it away or sold it on cheaply, with this event I am passing on how you can turn un-

loved items or a cheap purchase into a great profit.” With two shows scheduled, one at 11am-2pm and the other at 6pm-9pm demand is starting to increase and Dominic is keen to see people attend, “This event

This event guarantees to give you all the knowledge you need to find a bargain guarantees to give you all the knowledge you need to find a bargain, we can teach hall marking, we can teach stone inspection and so much more.” “An example, there was an old man that had his story featured on The Antiques Roadshow, he passed away, after living a very simple life but accrued a fair bit of debt and never fully got to enjoy life. The only thing he had that could potentially have any value was a ring from his Mother yet he had no idea, he just saw it as a ring. When he passed, it got valued and was priced at £1million!” I’m taken aback by this claim

but it turns out to be genuine, another great example being closer to home ”After doing one of my courses a person purchased a ring from a charity shop for £50, they then bought it into me and had it valued at £7000. It now sits in our window on sale!” We continue to chat and you can see this is an industry he not only knows but is deeply passionate about, reeling of an array of facts, stories and tips you get the impression that diamonds are to Mr Sakakini what sweets are to a young Child. Priceless, enjoyable and worth investing in. “Over the past 5 years diamonds have provided annual returns of roughly 12% and forecasters are predicting an annual increase this year of anywhere between 10 and 50%” Some people aren’t looking for investments through , some just

want to find something that can become an heirloom or signify something special, “Everything we have ever been given has some kind of meaning behind it, but jewellery tells a story, with jewellery we are dealing with emotions.” He says. An interesting part of the Sakakini business is that most of his custom now comes from bespoke orders, “We are like your personal shoppers, you can ask me to source something, create something or alter something and we will endeavour to do it so your item is unique to you. I can promise you there is no compromise on giving you exactly what you want. So there you have it, from the expert himself. Diamonds really can be anyone’s best Friend. You can join Dominic at his show by booking tickets via the store. Simply call him on (01403 250500) or pay him a visit.

Quo-caine and Rhino’s Revenge come to The Holbrook Club Quo-caine, the ultimate Status Quo experience, will (once again) be supporting Rhino’s Revenge on the closing date of their European tour - right here in Horsham! The side band of John ‘Rhino’ Edwards, bass player with rock legends Status Quo, Rhino’s Revenge is touring under the ‘Save The Rhino’ banner and continue to support Save The Rhino International. Rhino: “Thanks to the generosity of the people who come to our gigs, we’ve already collected a substantial amount for the charity.” With two albums of original material to its name – and a third currently in the making – Rhino’s Revenge brings songs from that repertoire to the stage alongside Quo favourites which Rhino has either written or co-written, some timeless rock classics and an element of the spontaneous unknown. He admitted: “I do like to surprise myself, and everyone else, by throwing in a song which we haven’t necessarily even rehearsed before, in the heat of the moment.”

Rhino’s Revenge is made up from a pool of stellar players, subject to availability, that currently includes Jim Kirkpatrick from FM on guitar and drummer Richard Newman, who has performed with Paul Rodgers, Rory Gallagher, Jefferson Starship, Steve Marriott, Alvin Lee and Glenn Hughes. Rhino explained: “Paul Rodgers is my absolute hero and when he heard about my association with Save The Rhino, he signed several copies of his latest CD/DVD, gave them to our shared drummer, Richard, and we sold them on our last tour, with all proceeds going to the charity.” Having previously been a member of acts including The Climax Blues Band, Space and Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Rhino was invited to join Quo in 1986 and has been permanent in the line-up ever since. Quo-caine are delighted to be supporting Rhino’s Revenge, once more, at The Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham on Saturday 25 May. Walk Right Back at The Hawth

Following an incredible sell out tour, Walk Right Back returns to The Hawth stage by popular demand on Tuesday 4 June. From the producers of smash hit show That’ll Be The Day, this phenomenal production tells the story of the most successful musical duo of all time – The Everly Brothers. Featuring hits such as Bye Bye Love, All I Have To Do Is Dream and Cathy’s Clown, this unique concert-based musical entwines the wonderful, sad yet glorious story of The Everly Brothers. The show follows the brothers’ rise to fame from humble country beginning to superstardom, through their decadelong feud to their glorious reunion which gave them back to each other, and back to the world. With “harmonies from heaven” that influenced The Beatles, The Beach Boys, and Simon & Garfunkel, The Everly Brothers were unmatched in their talent. Also featuring songs from a couple of the Everly Brothers’ good friends, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. Director, Peter John Jackson, said: “The Everly Brothers were an original and unique

act that had a sound like nothing else. Their harmonies were so tight that every group wanted to emulate them. Before that there was a singer, a band and backing vocals, The Everly’s entwined all of them and created “the harmony group.” International Everly Brothers Fan Club favourites, Luke and Aaron Wilson star as the iconic brothers. Ollie Gray, the shows Producer, explained: “Casting was a big challenge, as we felt it a must to have siblings playing Don and Phil, but after a long search we spotted two young brothers that were already honing their own tribute to the Everly Brothers. We were struck not only by their vocal blend but also their uncanny resemblance to Don and Phil Everly.” Walk Right Back is the first show of its kind to tell this phenomenal story of two brothers and their unforgettable music. This is a show not to be missed! Performance: Tuesday 4 June 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £25, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www. hawth.co.uk

“A hugely enjoyable hour of stand-up comedy” IVO GRAHAM: Motion Sickness Following a highly-acclaimed, totally sold-out run at 2018’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Ivo Graham is touring Motion Sickness throughout the UK, stopping off at The Hawth Studio on Wednesday 22 May. Each summer, Ivo performs to bigger crowds in larger venues at the festival, so it’s no surprise that this rising star of British comedy is taking his show to numerous venues across the length and breadth of the country. Ivo is growing up. So, this is his “moving in together” show; his “getting married” show; his “having kids” show. Sounds exhausting, right? Imagine being the one actually doing it. Ivo Graham is making lots of big life choices, and doing his darnedest to feel as positive about them as possible, rather than just feeling scared. Every-

one has wobbles about commitment, right? Or just Eton boys who’ve been repressing their feelings since they went away to boarding school aged seven? Is it time to open up a bit? His girlfriend thinks so; his therapist thinks so; various comedy critics think so. But what if scratching the itch only makes it worse? Since becoming the first winner of So You Think You’re Funny in 2009, Ivo has gone on to tour four shows and gain increasing popularity as one of the bright young lights of British comedy. TV and radio-wise, he has appeared on Live At The Apollo, Mock The Week, Live From The BBC, Roast Battle, Jon Richardson’s Ultimate Worrier, Fighting Talk, The Now Show, and It’s Not What You Know. Performance: Wednesday 22 May, 8pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Tickets: £14, avail-

able from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.

Art Exhibition at The Capitol Theatre starts this month

Horsham textile artist Esther Clark will be displaying a selection of her work in The Capitol from 13 May – 22 June. It will feature patchwork portraits, intricate houses both in fabrics and pen-and-paint, as well as cheeky textile dogs. Esther’s work combines colour, architectural accuracy, detail, and humour, making them into joyful images. While Esther has always been creative from an early age, she used to work for various airlines and later as an EFL teacher. Moving to a farm proved to be the springboard back into creative life. Lots of animals getting themselves into comical situations - what better way to capture all those memories than through art? Out came her pencils and paints and she started drawing detailed pictures, telling a story. Then, when 3-D images were popular, Esther was wondering if she could achieve a similar effect like that with fabrics. The answer was yes, she could. And it was fun! She

continued with ‘painting’ houses in fabric, and since she has also made colourful but practical items. Houses she mainly makes to commission, personalising each piece by using a person’s hobbies, interests, jobs, and history. She also gives workshops, guiding people through sewing their own house. Esther relishes her arty activities partly because it’s so enjoyable, partly because she donates the proceeds of her efforts to the charity Medical Detection Dogs. This organisation trains dogs with two main aims, based on the incredible sense of smell a dog has. One main branch is Medical Alert Assistance dogs; these dogs are trained to help people with life-threatening illnesses where they do not sense an imminent attack. Most of these involve Type 1 Diabetes patients.

The dogs detect a dangerously low blood sugar level and warn their human partners, so that they can take preventative action. The other main branch is Bio Detection, where dogs are trained to identify cancer. The dogs work with samples at the centre, identifying with an accuracy of over 90%. The aim is not for dogs to replace your GP, but for scientists to identify exactly what it is that the dogs smell, isolate this substance, and develop an easy, quick and reliable method to help a diagnosis at the surgery. At the moment, research is being done on certain cancers, Parkinson’s and malaria. The dogs, by the way, live with families and, like many people, go to work Monday to Friday, office hours! And the dogs are very happy! Normally exhibiting as a HAOS member, Esther is excited to have this solo exhibition from 13 May – 22 June at The Capitol, North Street, Horsham, RH12 1 RG. For lots more images, please visit www. LifeInPatches.com, and if you would like to commission Esther, she can be contacted on 01403 272978 or Esthervanoostrum@aol. com .

Depleted Horsham crush last Beefed up Billingshurst year’s runner up at the double cruise past Lindfield Photo by Clive Turner

Cricket - Saturday May 4 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Eastbourne 193 all out (46.3 overs) – Horsham 195-1(28.5) Horsham won by 9 wickets – Horsham 30 points – Eastbourne 6 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Playing in DHL style livery (bright yellow with a broad red stripe down the trousers), Horsham brushed aside Eastbourne last Saturday, winning convincingly with more than 20 overs unused after inserting the visitors at Cricketfield Road. Yet, all the time James Hockley was at the crease there were fears of a big total to chase. The former Kent batsman headed the league honours board last season with a top score of 240 and took an immediate liking to Horsham’s new Kiwi overseas signing, Auckland player Jamie Brown, whose lengthy first over included free

hits, and finished uncomfortably in double figures, the tall seamer having flown in from the other side of the world the day before. Hockley raced to his fifty with a big six in the eighth over, but after he was caught behind for 71 by Sam Bell off erstwhile Horsham YMCA goalkeeper Paul “PJ” Williams, Eastbourne subsided from 95-1 to 193 all out. Jordan Turner made 37 and skipper Jacob Smith 33, but no other batsman scored more than 9. Horsham bowled and fielded well, Darren Jordan, giving it air, taking 3-19, and Second XI Captain and Horsham rugby regular Johnny Whiting drafted in to bolster Horsham’s depleted ranks – 3-46. Sussex’s Tom Haines took 2-22, his superb overhead catch running away from the wicket culminating in a spectacular dive to see off Ollie Rayner for 3, the Middlesex and former Sussex allrounder having scored almost 4,000 county runs, in addition to his 380 wickets. Brown and Williams completed Horsham’s wicket taking with a

scalp apiece. Horsham’s response set off like a train, 88 being on the board in the tenth over, Haines and evergreen Craig Gallagher, unimpeded by rain stoppages, going on to hit 20 fours and 8 sixes between them, aided by occasional ground fielding lapses. By the time Haines was out for 86 just 35 more runs were required from 27 overs, Gallagher ending with an unbeaten 85, Rayner not coming on until the 16th over. Horsham skipper Michael Thornely told the District Post: “Getting Hockey out was crucial, amid the fielding restrictions they were 70-0 off seven, but fell away in the middle, PJ bowling well, into the wind. Then our openers started off so positively, giving us a good opening win.” Tom Haines added: “There was some inviting bowling out there!”, while Craig Gallagher said: “That was very enjoyable, especially following my disappointing net session last evening. But, there was a bit of pace in the wicket, which helped - although, as it is early season, some balls were popping and others kept a bit low.” Eastbourne’s James Hockley commented: “I thought I might go big today, but I got one that bounced a bit! With our modest score we needed early wickets, but the Horsham openers batted really well.” On Saturday Horsham visit Preston Nomads, who beat 2017 champions East Grinstead last Saturday. Meanwhile, with Horsham fielding two sides, the seconds were at Worthing’s Rotary East ground, where they made 156 from 33.5 overs, Harry Huddlestone scoring 40, Chippendales winning by 6 wickets.

Josh Kennedy tops honours board amid Roffey successes

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Captaining Roffey’s 4ths, young Josh Kennedy topped the Sussex League Honours Board with 153

not out after being put in against Southwater at King George V Playing Fields, Partridge Green on April 27th. Roffey posted 262-2, six Southwater bowlers toiling with scant reward. In reply Southwater were bowled out for 151, Roffey’s 2018 Colt of the Year Lewis Shivnarain taking 5-11 in 8.3 overs, Josh Kennedy telling the District Post: “Opening the batting with Matt Howell we put on 70 for the first wicket and I slowed down a bit once he was out, but managed to find the boundary more frequently after the drinks interval and was well supported by Ben Gibbs, who made 37 not out. Lewis is 13 years old and was playing in his first men’s game! He bowled extremely well and was very confident – his first over was a double wicket maiden.” And, Lewis is something of an allrounder, scoring two hundreds captaining his Roffey age group side in last year’s U12 Festival. He won both Roffey’s U12 batting and U13 bowling awards last year and is on the Sussex Youth development programme. And, last Saturday, in addition

to the first team’s success, Roffey’s second and third teams also won, Matt Bidlake saying: “The 2nds kicked off the season with an impressive last over victory against a good West Chiltington 1st team, who made 220-8 batting first, thanks to a solid 60 from Ben Lucking. 14 year old Sam Henderson was our stand out bowler, taking his maiden 5 wicket haul for our seconds, finishing with 5-43. Then, key lower order cameos from Ollie Bidlake (37) and an unbeaten 21 from Sachin Naik and 17 not out from Sam saw us home. We were not at our best, but strong character showed that we have the ability to grind out a result and we’ll take confidence from that going forward. We’re at Ansty on Saturday, looking to make it back to back victories.” Roffey thirds played a strong Portslade side, but won comfortably – by 93 runs. Ed Barnes’ century was the highlight of Roffey’s 218-4, before Portslade were bowled out for 125, Nathan Kerridge impressing with 5-21. Roffey 3s have won their last 9 games on the bounce and will be pressing for another promotion.

Cricket - Saturday May 4 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Lindfield 156 all out (40.4 overs) Billingshurst 159-3 (23.3 overs) Billingshurst won by 7 wickets – Billingshurst 30 points – Lindfield 5 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter After flirting with promotion last season, Billingshurst have made no secret of their aspiration to return to the Premiership and they made an excellent start to their campaign with a strong win in their opening fixture – at their Jubilee Fields home. Lindfield won the toss and elected to bat, but soon lost both openers to Ben Mortimer, newly signed from Alton, Hampshire. Five subsequent batsmen all reached double figures but wickets continued to fall cheaply with nobody going on to post a big score. Mortimer finished with 3-36, Louis Storey returning to the club from East Preston took 2-19 and opening bowler Andy Barr 2-28, new Captain Ben Williams and Tasmanian overseas player Jordan Willoughby grabbing a

scalp apiece. Billingshurst then made short work of the 157 target after setting a sound platform with a 70 run opening partnership, going on to win with more than 20 overs still in the bank, courtesy of 49 from wicketkeeper Josh Wood, an unbeaten 47 from Storey, 31 not out from Paul Osborne and 25 from Willoughby. Ben Williams told the District Post: “That was a great way to begin our season – its always good to get off to a win! It was a typical early season wicket, but the batsmen who committed showed that it was perfectly possible to score runs out there. Jordan batted fluently and Louis is a really good up and coming young player, while Josh Wood has played for Hampshire seconds – he’s a good ball striker. We’ve also signed former Horsham player Sam Dobson and Jack Haines from Slinfold, and there’s even the possibility that ex Sussex and England player Mike Yardy might play a few games. We’re at Hastings on Saturday, they were relegated last season and will be anxious to get back into the Premiership, so we’re expecting a competitive game.”

Roffey open with determined win Cricket - Saturday May 4 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Brighton & Hove 235 all out (47.3 overs) – Roffey 237-6 (48.2) Roffey won by 4 wickets – Roffey 30 points – Brighton 13 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter On a freezing day at the Nevill Sports Ground, Roffey reprised last year’s win there, but it took some outstanding performances to overcome Brighton & Hove. Former Sussex and Scotland player Matt Machan threatened to take the game away from Roffey, his classy 121 at slightly faster than a run a ball containing 12 fours and 3 sixes. Earlier Sussex’s Delray Rawlins made a quickfire 40, skipper Simon Hetherton following up with a watchful 39. But, those three top guns accounted for 200 of Brighton’s runs, their other eight batsmen contributing only 23 between them. For Roffey a devastating spell from Alex Collins stopped Brighton in their tracks – fast and admirably straight, first he grabbed the crucial scalp by bowling Machan, quickly going on to take four more wickets to condemn Brighton from 214-4 to 235 all out. The ever- reliable George Fleming took 2-34, with Rohit Jagota, Leigh Harrison and new signing from Ifield, James Pearce, all chipping in with a wicket apiece. Roffey replied with an opening stand of 125, Theo Rivers scoring 48 and returning Aussie overseas player Ben Manenti 68, but when they were both out in quick succession, two more wickets

promptly went down, Roffey suddenly finding themselves on 132-4 and with a batsman light - Jibran Khan being away playing in a televised tournament in Pakistan. But, Roffey’s strength in depth was once more confirmed, Captain Matt Davies posting a timely unbeaten 56 and new Roffey Chairman Josh Fleming 34, the pair putting on 89 for the fifth wicket to take Roffey within 15 runs of victory, the win subsequently coming with 10 balls to spare. Matt Davies told the District Post: “Machan batted very well, but Brighton rely heavily on their pros and Collo soon got into his stride with five quick wickets in his six overs, getting us back in the game. Then, Theo and Ben really put us in the driving seat - until we lost four wickets for seven runs and were in a bit of trouble - but we dug ourselves out and it was great to start the season with a win!” Alex Collins added: “Machan made batting look very easy, it wasn’t that simple a wicket, the ball was seaming around a bit and I enjoyed bowling on it - it was a case of bowling straight and it was coming out quite well for me. It was a bit nervy at the end, but we got there!” On Saturday, Roffey have their first home game of the season when they welcome newcomers Mayfield, who lost last week. Then, on Sunday Roffey open their ECB National Club Championship Cup campaign with a home fixture against Hastings, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, but beat Goring convincingly in a Division 2 clash last Saturday

Horsham promoted to Premier Division Resuming, a Horsham free kick rebounded to Dylan Merchant, but the defender could only head to Mott, ahead of Abdul Anidugbe failing to beat Pelling, neither side managing to break the deadlock, the second half of extra time and the prospect of a penalty shoot out beckoning. Changes rejuvenated the Kent side, but substitute Trey Williams’ blast was well adrift, until, with 12 minutes remaining, Joey Taylor celebrated coming off the bench with a pinpoint free kick from the right, Merchant climbing to head in his debut goal for Horsham. He will never score a better winner, Horsham keeping Ashford at bay to clinch the hard earned win. Horsham Secretary Jeff Barrett acknowledged the great enter-

This is beyond our wildest dreams I’ve got a great management team and an incredible bunch of players Friday May 3 – Promotion PlayOff Final Horsham 2 Ashford United 1 (After extra time) Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham are promoted! They signed off from their two year ground share at Culver Road, Lancing with a battling win in the Play-off Final, crowning a superb run of seven successive victories at the business end of their busy season. Strong cup results also marked Horsham’s excellent campaigns, but this was their most important game for many a year, returning the Hornets to the Bostik Premier League for the first time since 2012, having endured time in the County League in the interim. Ashford, has struggled, narrowly avoiding relegation last season, but

clawed their way up to the Playoff Final after an indifferent start to the season. And, the timing of Horsham’s promotion could not be better - after an extensive nomadic existence, next season they will be coming home to their burgeoning Hop Oast facility in a senior league befitting the excellent new surroundings. The Club urged supporters to come to the Play-Off Final and almost 900 attended, defying the cold, damp conditions. Manager Dom di Paola had been studying videos of Ashford and was well aware of the twin threat posed by midfielder Sam Corne – rated by him as the best midfielder in the division – and prolific ex pro, attacker Danny Parish. Horsham dominated first half possession and the pulsating second half was reminiscent of a must win cup tie with both teams straining every sinew to get over the line. After an understandably cagey

start there was a long injury delay, Parish laying prone before his hobbling resumption, when, after Chris Smith’s run came to nothing, Tyrell RichardsonBrown crossed from the right to no avail. Horsham were throwing all into the attack, earning three corners in quick succession, the first two being cleared and the third safely gathered by Ashford keeper Sam Mott. Action switched to the other end, but Jerald Aboagye fired straight to Josh Pelling in the home goal. Then, with almost 20 minutes on the clock, Rob O’Toole fired over. In a prolonged spell of freezing rain raking across the ground, Smith was denied by Mott. But, a Horsham goal soon followed, George Hayward volleying in Lee Harding’s supply, Ashford supporters were singing to keep their spirits up, but their side did not look likely to score until, in a flurry of attacks late in the half,

Parish headed wide and then induced a top save from Pelling, before the woodwork came to Horsham’s rescue. But, Ashford kept pressing and were awarded a clear penalty, which Corne converted, evading Pelling’s forlorn grasp. Starting the second half 1-1, drama was guaranteed, Mott immediately negating Smith’s foray before Pelling blocked a free kick and an Ashford corner went mercifully wide. Horsham, though, soon had an opportunity to go back into the lead from the spot after O’Toole was scythed down in the box, but then failed to beat Mott’s dive with Horsham fans complaining - justifiably – that the keeper had advanced from his line. Sniffing the possibility of a win, Ashford tested Pelling, while Horsham, also pushing hard, were aggrieved when appeals for another penalty fell on deaf ears, heralding extra time.

New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site

tainment provided by the visitors and Chairman Kevin Borrett said: “Winning this fabulous game completes Horsham’s ten year journey back to the Premiership.” While, elated Hornets’ Manager Dom di Paola – rightly installed as the League’s April Manager of the Month - said: “This is beyond our wildest dreams – I’ve got a great management team and an incredible bunch of players: they travelled down to Steyning for training and worked very hard for this. Ashford is an excellent team, but we kept their two danger men quiet. After a celebration I’m taking a break in Greece and we’ll think about planning for next season after that.” Last word to Life President Frank King, who first watched Horsham in 1945: “I’m absolutely thrilled, Dom is a fantastic Manager and has done a great job!”
