Earlier this week we had the privilege of being able to get access to the famous St Marks spire. Having been a Horsham landmark since 1870 many members of the public had been left wondering if it was still being maintained following the closure of it in 1988 and duly asked the questions via social media. We put that question to RSA and were promptly greeted with an invite to come and have a look. Unfortunately there was nothing really to see and it felt somewhat of an anti climax as due to health

and safety regulations, we were not allowed to scale the ladder that may take us any further. What we can say though is that RSA are currently the owners and lease it. Inspections of the structure and interior take place and the brickwork has recently had its certificate granted that means it is structurally sound for at least another 100 years. The plaque, that was missing for sometime and had been enquired about recently has been returned and was simply missing due to some of the wood surround rotting away which caused it to

fall out. Interestingly the spire also has a link to the pre historic past of this part of the UK. When Dinosaurs roamed and the area we now call Horsham was nothing more than swamps, forests and wetlands, Iguanadons were common and in 1840 George Bax Holmes, a famous local fossil collector discovered bones of Iguanadon in the stones that were being used to make a new chapel that later became St Marks. With any luck we will be able to get a little further up into the spire in the near future!

Legendary female footballer immortalized in bronze by Horsham sculptor Hannah Stewart Statue of the first unofficial Lioness, Lily Parr to be unveiled ahead of England’s Lionesses’ bid for glory this summer Revealed: Nearly 100 years after the first women’s football match between players from across England and France, the UK will see the first ever statue of a female footballer, in honour of women’s football trailblazer Lily Parr. The life-size bronze statue, created by Horsham sculptor Hannah Stewart, was commissioned by Mars to inspire the England Lionesses ahead of this summer’s tournament and will be unveiled next month at the National Foot-

ball Museum. Lily Parr, an outside left winger who scored over 980 goals in her 32-year career, was reputed to possess one of the most powerful shots in football, and had the ability to score goals from extraordinary angles with a left foot cross drive with immense skill and power. Starting her career at Dick, Kerr Ladies FC as a full-back 100 years ago - aged just 14, Lily moved to the left wing in 1921 and scored an impressive 108 goals in her first year in this position. Her steely determination to be the best footballer worldwide saw her spend hours, on her own, perfecting the technique

of her almighty power kick, as many other legendary kickers have gone on to do. Gemma Buggins, Mars Brand Director, said: “Lily Parr was the heroine of her time in the sporting world. It’s an honour to be able to recognise her and commemorate the inspirational woman that she was. “With England’s Lionesses preparing for this summer’s tournament, we hope the unveiling of the first ever female footballer statue spurs them on and gives them the motivation to go all the way!” Marzena Bogdanowicz, Head of Commercial and Marketing,

Women’s Football at The FA, said: “Women’s football is in a very strong place today with the England team helping us to drive participation and interest at every level. We have come a long way since Lily Parr’s days and she deserves recognition as a true pioneer of the sport. “Lily Parr was the first woman to enter the Football Hall of Fame, an iconic achievement in itself, so it’s only fitting that she takes her place alongside other football legends and becomes the first woman to be celebrated with a statue in her honour.”

Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside

Residents celebrate what it is to be British at Horsham’s Great British Festival

Photos by Toby Phillips

Horsham’s second major town centre event of the year, the Great British Weekend presented a wonderful variety of British cultural experiences that showcased just about every area of the town. Organised by the Broadwood Morris on Saturday and Samaritans of Horsham & Crawley & Horsham Folk Club, supported by Horsham District Council and Horsham District Year of Culture, on Sunday, there was truly something for everybody over the two days. Saturday’s Day of Dance reflected the weather, moving from dark clouds and the thunder of drums to the jingle jangle of bells and glorious sunshine, as the many styles of Morris performers rotated between ‘stands’ (dance sites) across the town. Both Horsham Markets were buzzing with extra stalls for the day, the Bishopric Market also hosting a fine display of eight Morris Minor cars. A new giant deckchair attracted plenty of interest outside the Carfax’s Horsham Wine Cellar who had very popular sparkling wine tastings from Horsham’s nearest (and perhaps hitherto least known) vineyard, Coolhurst. Sunday’s event was opened by our very own Davey and May Pearson. Billed as The Pearly King and Queen of Horsham, they were accompanied by the authentic Pearly King and Queen of Tower Hamlets and gave a short lesson in cockney rhyming slang. The Concert for Samaritans kept visitors entertained at the bandstand amongst a plethora of Carfax stalls

some selling traditional foods, such as pie & mash, tea & cake and even medieval fayre. Elsewhere, Loxwood Joust’s sword fighting shows in Market Square proved popular alongside their new Mead launch and information about their forthcoming summer and winter events. Near Paninos and Chococo, have a go Circus skills provided by Richard Alan continually entertained throughout the day. On the Forum, the heralded ‘Horsham-on-Sea’ was enjoyed by those following the sea inspired chalk pavement stencils, with a steady number of families seen to be soaking up the seaside vibe. Dan the Hat, the Punch & Judy, The Last Resort and their Beach Hut entertainments, giant deckchair selfies and have-a-go chalk drawing all proving popular with younger visitors. The delightfully named ‘Dashing Donkeys’ offered rides in the shade of the weeping beech – ‘dubbed Horsham’s favourite tree’ with all of this played out to authentic steam organ sounds from a miniature carousel. Unlike Piazza Italia, where vehicles are very much the focus for many, the Great British Weekend always includes a reminder of Britain’s automotive heritage. Sunday took this to the next level with a fine display of classic cars assembled by the members of Storrington’s SADCASE group, the Red steam bus from Horsham Traction Company and a well curated collection of Aston Martins that spanned the years from the early James

Bond DB6 to the very latest DBS Superlegerra in matt finish. The second of the Cote Restaurant’s Concours d’Elegance awards went to an immaculately restored 1967 Aston Martin DB6 Mk ll Vantage Volante owned by Dave Whiting. (This is the same open topped model made famous as the car Prince William borrowed from Prince Charles to drive away from his wedding reception in 2011. ) A special Manager’s choice award went to the impressive 2019 Aston Martin DBS Superlegerra. All in all, and with the weather on-side, the weekend was a major success. The sum of the parts made for a unique town based weekend of experiences. Next up, Sunday 19 of May is Horsham Caribbean Festival, which adds even more diversity to the town programme in this Horsham District Year of Culture. A holiday show organised by local business, The Sussex Travel Company with a £2700 Caribbean holiday to be won is at the heart of this event in the Carfax. Themed entertainers and bands, food & drink, pirates and mermaids fancy dress competitions (for adults and children) have been organised by Horsham District Council – a Bob Marley tribute band closing the show from 3pm. With celebrations of the British Seaside, the Caribbean, Camper Van surf culture and a Spanish Spring fayre all occurring within a few weeks, ‘life’s a beach’ in Horsham this spring, so be sure you don’t miss a thing, every event is free to enter.

Hot Stepping their way to £9k for Charity an hour and half to see you!! If it were me in hospital battling Cancer and asking that question, what would you say!??” To which Natasha replied: “I’d walk on hot coals for you!!” And there you have it! The light bulb moment arose! Sarah, main organiser of the event, said: “Not in a million years did I ever imagine we could raise near on £10,000! On the day, I could see the online ‘Justgiving’ page total skipping up, as pictures were being posted on social media, and when I saw the sea of people that had arrived

Bank holiday Monday saw 53 brave people sure foot it over a bed of hot coals with temperatures of around 500°C, raising nearly £10k for Charity Myeloma UK. A team of four, rallied together

to organise the event and show support for their close friend/ family member Natasha Westall, who, after being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma back in the Summer of 2017, and enduring several rounds of chemotherapy and a brutal course of radiotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant, was left feeling very low mentally and physically weak. Whilst in Southampton’s cancer treatment unit, and questioning herself as to whether she had made the right choice about the treatment, Natasha and her Sister in Law, Sarah, had a conversation along the lines of: Sarah: “Of course I don’t mind driving

Not in a million years did I ever imagine we could raise near on £10,000 to watch as we came out of the Primary school hall in Shipley, where we had more mental preparation rather than training, I knew it was going to be a good day, and dared to believe we could reach £7k, but to be £100 shy of £10,000! That’s phenomenal!” The hot coals walk itself for me was fine; it was the broken glass walking they sprung on us

in training that scared me beyond belief. But I focused on why I was there, and took the steps needed, (Gingerly in the case of the broken glass!), to cross a path that was more a mind over matter, rather than skill, as we learnt from the specialist fire walking company ‘Firewalking International’ that day!The fire walking event not only raised a breath taking amount for Myeloma UK, who support those affected by ‘Multiple Myeloma’ (an incurable terminal illness that attacks your body’s immune system) and research into treatment, but also other charities, such as The Rocking horse Appeal and British Heart foundation by people who took part to raise money and awareness for their own personal causes. Lastly, none of this would have happened without #TeamTash, (Mike, Zoe, Natalie and Sarah) the support of Mrs Harvey, School Principle, who let us use the school grounds for free for the event, Sponsorship from businesses such as Dark Star Brewery, Cabin Pressure Spirits, Richard Killner Bespoke Woodwork, Meadow Arts face painting, help and support from numerous friends and family who gave up their time for the event, and all those who donated! A HUGE Thank you! Sarah Cuthbertson

Horsham Scouts St Georges Day Parade – 2019 Photos by Owen Duda.

Horsham Scouts Peter Scofield Watch Out - The Scouts Are About! On Sunday 28th April the Horsham Carfax bandstand was surrounded by hundreds of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, their adult leaders and supporters to celebrate Lord Baden-Powell’s vision way for the development of young people through Scouting. The Royal British Legion Band led Scouts in a parade through the streets to the Carfax. As traffic was halted crowds thronged to see this popular spectacle. As flags waved and cameras snapped, the gathered Scouts were joined by guests, including Jeremy Quinn (MP) & Peter Burgess (Horsham District Council Chairman), and Farid Bahooshy (West Sussex County Scouts). Explorer Scouts, attending the 24th World Jamboree this summer in the USA, gave a presentation of their journey so far in preparation for their great adventure. They gave encouragement to the younger members of Horsham Scouts to apply for the 25th World Jamboree to be held in South Korea. The promises made by all

members of the Movement were renewed. The duty to ‘do our best’ has been at the heart of Scouting since it’s foundation in 2007. Scouting is the largest UK youth organisation and is one of the most trusted brands in the country. Horsham Scout District has 1800 members from 6 years old to adults. Across the country Scouting takes place every day of the week; it seeks to help almost half a million young people in the UK enjoy fun and adventure while developing skills that will help them succeed in their adult lives. The Scouting programme develops essential skills including teamwork, leadership and resilience; skills that have helped Scouts become everything from teachers and social workers to astronauts and Olympians. Scouting helps young people develop and improve key Skills for Life. The District Commissioner for Horsham Scouts, Peter Scofield, said: “Scouting has been a major influence in my life since joining Cubs way back in 1958. I have benefitted from so many Scouting opportunities; I know this is true for millions of other Scouts since B-P founded the Movement. I am

grateful to my leaders in the past who gave so much encouragement. “Seeing the assembled Scouts in the Carfax on Sunday was a great joy and confirmed how proud I am to be a Scout!” Scouting believes in bringing people together working for peace among the nations. We are part of

a worldwide Movement creating stronger communities, inspiring positive futures, celebrating diversity and always standing against intolerance. Horsham Scouts want even more young people to join the adventure... but that’s not possible unless there are more adults ready to make it happen!

If you think Scouts are doing a ‘good thing’ come and join us, bringing your skills, knowledge and enthusiasm, and be someone to inspire and develop the generations that follow. To find out more about the opportunities for adults in Scouting, contact the District Commissioner on dc@horshamscouts.com

Treasure Hunt Treat for Primary School Pupils On 3 May, forty-four Year 5 pupils from eight local primary schools visited Christ’s Hospital School to take part in an exciting treasure hunt, run by The Exploration Society. Christ’s Hospital School organised the event and hosted pupils from the following primary schools: St Mary’s C of E Primary in Horsham, Warnham C of E Primary, The Laurels Primary in Worthing, Eastbrook Primary Academy in Brighton, North Lancing Primary, Sompting Village Primary, Waterfield Primary in Bewbush and Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Primary School in Crawley. On arrival, the children gathered in Christ’s Hospital School’s quadrangle to watch the pupils’ daily band parade, which they appeared to enjoy thoroughly. They then set off on a fun-packed afternoon of outdoor activities, involving games, puzzles, map reading and more, all while engaging in a fantastic treasure hunt in the

stunning grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. “These games provide an excellent way for pupils to develop their leadership, teamwork and critical thinking skills, as they must work to solve puzzles and navigate the game area. Our activities also provide a great opportunity for pupils to experience new environments in an engaging and creative way,” said one of the organisers from The Exploration Society. At the end of the afternoon’s fun, the children were treated to a hot meal and cake in the school’s impressive Dining Hall. Did the children enjoy the event? “It was a bit like being at a really fun party; but we also had to use our brain, so we were learning while having fun,” said one of the Year 5 pupils. Mission accomplished! For more information on The Exploration Society, please visit: https://explorationsociety.co.uk/

New faces for Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k The Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k Committee is delighted to welcome two new key members of the organising team. Lauren Swatton is the new Race Secretary taking over from Sue Parillon and Clare Giles takes over as Meetings Secretary from Carolyn Lambkin. Lauren works in clinical drug research and is born and bred in Horsham. She has been running for about 20 years and has lost count of the number of races she has done. She has completed 6 full marathons, some outside the UK, various 5k, 10k and 10 mile races as well as many half marathons including of course the Barns Green Half Marathon on several occasions. Claire is a self-confessed running addict and is also a Level 3 PT, and a Zumba instructor. She is part of the park run core team at Brighton & Hove and she runs with Burgess Hill Runners and Runbrighton. She has also run many different races over the years and has also completed 6 marathons and several half marathons, the first of these that she ran was the Barns Green Half Marathon. Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings, said: “We are delighted that Lauren and Claire have agreed to join our team. I know they will bring with them invaluable running knowledge and experience and that they will be able to pick up where Sue and Carolyn left off and

help take our event to the next level. I must record a huge thanks to both Sue and Carolyn for all their hard work and dedication over the past few years. “Sue has served as Race secretary for 10 years and in that time she did an outstanding job. Her hard work and dedication were absolutely key in enabling our races to become as successful as they have in the past few years. Sue will continue to work on the race this year and help Lauren settle in to the role. As a small token of thanks to Sue, we have asked her if she would act as official starter for the 10k race this year. “Similarly, we will miss Carolyn who has for the past 4 years managed to make sense of and coordinate all the notes from our Committee meetings. She has done a wonderful job and has been an extremely reliable and efficient operator who I have depended on greatly. I know that all the Committee would join me in thanking Sue and Carolyn for all their hard work and total commitment”. This year’s races take place on Sunday 29 September - in just under 4 months’ time. Organisers stated that, as always, the support and help of all the local residents is greatly appreciated, particularly with regard to road closures: “It is always good to see as many local runners taking part, so if you haven’t already signed

up for this year’s races, why not give it a go!?” Once again, St Catherine’s Hospice has been chosen as the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k. The enormous success of last year’s races combined with the great generosity of the runners resulted in just over £19,000 being raised for St Catherine’s. A lot of money was also raised for the many societies, groups and sports clubs who help with the organisation of the event. Last year, over 2,000 runners registered for the Half Marathon, which is in its 37th year, and the increasingly popular 10k event, which is now in its 4th year. As always, the two race courses follow routes on closed roads, through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, and Christ’s Hospital. For further details on how to take part, please visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website; barnsgreen-half.org.uk

Call for landlords in Horsham to help young people who have faced homelessness

Landlords in Horsham are being urged to help young people who have faced homelessness into the private rental sector by End Youth Homelessness (EYH) and Yorkshire Building Society. EYH is a movement of grassroots charities, including The Amber Foundation in Horsham, who work together at a local level to end youth homelessness on a national

scale. High rents and upfront costs can make it difficult for those on low incomes to access private rented accommodation, with the costs of starting a tenancy running into thousands of pounds. EYH has been working in partnership with Yorkshire Building Society to help homeless young people across the UK live indepen-

dently. The Rent Deposit Scheme is a joint project that is paid for through the charity partnership between Yorkshire Building Society and administered by EYH, and helps private landlords to fill vacant properties quickly and free of charge. To date the scheme has been able to support over 200 young people into their own rented homes. An estimated 103,000 young people in the UK are homeless or at risk of homelessness and, according to latest figures, 39 young people in Horsham received some homelessness support from their local authority in 2017/18.* Sarah Johnson, Operations Manager for The Amber Foundation, said: “Our Rent Deposit Scheme helps young people across Horsham who have faced homelessness and are now ready to live independently to gain access to the private rented sector. We provide landlords with the cash deposit to protect them from rent arrears and damage to the property. “Young people accepted on this scheme are in, or about to enter, education, employment or training. Also, they will have demonstrated the ability to save for their own deposit over an agreed period of time, maintain the conditions of their tenancy, respect their neighbours, and work with ourselves to make their tenancy a lasting success.” Each year, EYH charities provide over 30,000 homeless young people with the accommodation and

support they need to fulfil their potential. Private landlords’ mortgage and insurance conditions can prohibit people on benefits from accessing tenancies – however a recent survey of private landlords found that only 21 per cent would be willing to let to a young person moving on from homelessness accommodation.** As well as funding the Rent Deposit Scheme, Yorkshire Building Society has updated its mortgage terms for landlords to enable them to offer tenancies to renters who receive benefits, such as former homeless young people. Sasha Pauley, Charity Partnership Manager for Yorkshire Building Society, said: “We’re pleased to confirm that landlords with any of our buy-to-let mortgages can offer tenancies to renters who receive state benefits. “We are committed to providing people with a home of their own, including those who rent a property as well as buying one, because we believe that to build a successful future everyone needs a safe place to call home. “The change last year to our letting requirements improves rental opportunities for a wider range of people searching for a home, and also increases the choice of potential tenants for landlords. It builds on the work we are doing with End Youth Homelessness, which will provide practical help to homeless young people across the UK who are ready to live independently.”

Through the partnership, the Society aims to raise £750,000 to support homeless young people into their own rented homes. Benefits to landlords: EYH charities have a list of potential and suitable tenants, so you can fill vacancies quickly and free of charge; Every tenant is provided with support for paying bills, maintaining the tenancy and effectively saving towards their own deposit; Every tenant is given a move-in grant, to help furnish their home; Supports a young person in need of housing to make an independent start in life. To be eligible for the scheme, landlords must: Ensure all properties meet basic safety requirements; Be willing to let properties to young people receiving benefits or on low income; Work with your EYH charity to resolve any problems that may arise; Inform your EYH charity before taking any action to end a tenancy; Provide evidence of buy to let or mortgage free status. If you are a landlord interested in helping young people in Horsham who have faced homelessness please e-mail sarah.johnson@ amberweb.org *Source: Centrepoint’s Youth Homelessness Databank - www. yhdatabank.com **Source: YouGov conducted an online survey of 1,054 private landlords across Britain on behalf of Centrepoint in August 2018. - https://centrepoint.org.uk/media/3048/ready-to-move-on.pdf

Hunt for Sussex Businesses ripe for a Rural Opportunity The countryside charity, CPRE Sussex, is looking for local businesses interested in improving their rural reach. CPRE Director, Kia Trainor, explained: “It’s easy to underestimate the power of the rural economy and the benefits it can yield for many businesses”. Earlier this year, the House of Lords Rural Economy Committee said that Rural England is at a point of ‘major transition’ and warned people not to ‘underrate the contribution rural economies can make to the nation’s prosperity’. “In recognition of this, the government has committed to spending £3.5bn on economic development in the countryside over the next 18 months, so now is the perfect time to support local rural businesses,” continued Kia. With this is mind, CPRE Sussex is searching for fresh,

Horsham Battle of the Bands announces heat venues & dates Horsham’s long running ‘Battle of the Bands’ competition has announced venue partners and dates for the heats of this year’s Original Bands and Covers Acts competitions. Thriving new Horsham music venue The REC Rooms will host the two heats in the Covers Acts competition on 18 & 25 July, while Horsham Sports Club (HSC) will host the two heats in the Original Bands competition on 19 and 26 July. The finals in both competitions will take place on the big festival stage in the Human Nature Garden in Horsham Park on Saturday 17 August. The always popular Acoustic Originals competition will take place on Saturday 10 August on the Carfax bandstand during the regular Saturday market. Horsham BotB chairman,

Mark Daly, said: “We’re delighted to welcome on board these two excellent heat venues. While there are plenty of great live music venues in Horsham, there aren’t many with the capacity for BotB at its peak, which is, of course, what we’re always aiming for. HSC is a well established large venue – hosting as it does many top local acts throughout the year, as well as The Big Gig. The REC Rooms is a perfect new addition; we expect it to be a big draw for covers bands looking to showcase themselves and potentially get a booking there.” There are only a handful of places left in each competition. Bands can currently still enter at www.horshambotb.co.uk All BotB events this year will be FREE entry and part of the Horsham Festival and ‘Year

of Culture’ fringe. If you’re interested in getting involved as a volunteer on the day, as part of the organising commit-

tee or as a sponsor of the event, please email the team at info@ horshambotb.co.uk.

The Story of Guitar Heroes We all love a bit of guitar wielding in a song, it’s iconic, soulful and – oh what a beautiful instrument! The Story of Guitar Heroes is an awe-inspiring, dynamic show which transports you through time: from the 1950s with performers such as Chuck Berry and Hank Marvin from The Shadows, including gifted legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, through to modern day players, such as the great Brian May and the electrifying Steve Vai, to name but a few! Presented by guitar virtuoso Phil Walker, this show’s extraordinarily talented band uses over 30 guitars to recreate and accurately reproduce the sound and ambiance of

each guitar hero. Featuring video footage of historical moments, with state-of-the-art lighting and delivered with a light-hearted vibe – this makes for a truly sensational and enjoyable evening. Now in its 5th year, The Story of Guitar Heroes has become increasingly popular, not only with many guitar players and musicians, but with people and families of all ages. Don’t miss out on this spectacular show. You won’t be disappointed! Performance: Thursday 4 July, The Capitol, Horsham. Anthony Sahota to fly in to The Capitol this December Nick Mowat, General Manager at The Capitol, is delighted to confirm that Anthony Sahota will play the starring role of Peter Pan in this year’s spectacular family pantomime, which is due to open in Horsham on Friday 13 December. After graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kingston University, Anthony starred in the BBC’s exciting new talent competition Let it Shine which aimed to find young performers to star in The Band, a new stage musical featuring the songs of Take That. A passionate singer and performer, Anthony had record deal offers prior to the show, but decided to finish his degree before pursuing his singing dreams. Whilst studying his degree, and fitting in any time spare writing songs and recording/performing, Anthony had an unforgettable moment when Gary Barlow surprised him by turning up at his graduation to tell him he had been selected for the show! Recalling the day, Anthony said: “I was absolutely speechless. To be selected from hundreds of applicants for an opportunity like this, and for it to

be announced in front of all of my friends and family by Gary Barlow, was just the greatest and most honoured feeling!” Throughout the show, Anthony received praise for his unique vocal style and renditions of current chart hits. A highlight was performing with his childhood favourite pop group Busted on national TV as well as Olly Murs. He went on to reach the quarter final stage in the contest. Most recently, Anthony toured the UK and performed in the biggest UK Bollywood musical, Bring on the Bollywood. His early theatrical experience included being directed by Andrew Lloyd Webber in the musical Whistle down the Wind. Further recent theatre work includes playing the lead role of Aladdin in Dubai. Inspired by R & B / pop culture, ‘My Road’ (his EP released early 2017) brought his unique contribution to the contemporary music scene; with more exciting official music projects coming in 2019. Anthony said: “I am delighted to be performing at The Capitol, Horsham and I can’t wait to play “the boy who never grew up” in this year’s dazzling family pantomime.

Keep an eye out for announcements of who else will be joining me!” Tickets: Available online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com and from the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

PREVIEWS WED 22 & THU 23 MAY

Gala group’s goal supported by Horsham housebuilder The final preparations are being made ahead of this year’s Broadbridge Heath Summer Fete, one of Horsham’s favourite annual summer events. This year’s fete takes place on Saturday 15 June and will be hosted at its typical home on the Broadbridge Heath Common, which is free to enter on the day to all visitors. The event, organised by the dedicated group of Broadbridge Heath Gala Association members, has been given a boost with the news that housebuilder, Bellway, is supporting the fete. Bellway, who is currently building new homes in the Horsham village, is sponsoring the event for the second year in succession. Hollie Hebblethwaite, of Broadbridge Heath Gala Association, said: “We are really looking forward to this year’s summer fete, to be able to bring together the entire community for a day of fun and entertainment on the Heath’s Common. “Without the support of our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to host the event, so we would again

like to thank all our contributors, including Bellway, for their kind donations.” Bellway is currently building a collection of three, four and fivebedroom homes at its Solomon’s Seal development, off Old Guildford Road in Broadbridge Heath. Daniel Williamson, Head of Sales for Bellway South London, said: “We are proud to, once again, be able to give our backing to the Broadbridge Heath Gala Associa-

tion, a key contributor to the summer calendar in the community. “We hope our support will go some way towards helping make the event another great success, and hope everyone who attends this year’s summer fete has a wonderful time.” For more information on the Broadbridge Heath Gala Association, visit www.broadbridgeheath. co.uk

The Rec Rooms: THE venue for live music The Rec Rooms have always wanted to set the bar high, from the moment that three local Men took it upon themselves to change the way people perceive the former nightclub it has been a combination of hard work, persistence and enthusiasm. This past weekend seemed to be a culmination of those efforts. Two hugely successful nights catering for two different musical fan bases meant has surely enforced the view among many that this is THE venue for live music. On Friday night, Trojan Beats, a band that successfully fuses together ska, reggae and two tone, had people reliving their youth as they ‘skanked’ to the sounds being played in front of them. With a thumping bass line accompanying most tracks, backed up by a talented brass section you could see this was a tight band who knew how to get a crowd moving. It would be easy to forget this band have only been around for about. 2 years. Covering tracks from Desmond Dekker, toots and the maytals, the specials, madness and more, this was a night for nostalgia, the crowd loved it and from what we could tell, the band did too. Saturday saw chartoppers of yesteryear Toploader entertain a fully packed venue as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their celebrated album

“Onkas big moka.” Pior to them gracing the stage though, the audience were treated to some excellent support from Meg Lawrenson, who describes herself as an artist that intertwines country with pop and George Henessey a perfect britpop inspired, folk laced musician who is building up quite a following online. Recieving cheers and applause as they took to stage Toploader were ready but were the crowd? A resounding yes was the answer. With a new EP also on the way, the show was a great opportunity for the band to showcase some new music whilst also giving fans what they already knew. Tracks like ‘Achilies heel and ‘Let the people know’ went down well but once the opening notes to ‘Dancing in the moonlight’ you could have sensed the roof would come off. It was testament to a band that have over 20 years of experience in the industry that such an intimate venue could still generate a big venue vibe, they knew they were putting on a show and ensured that a venue holding 300 odd people can feel like one holding 3000. Huge credit to of the all the acts and a special mention should go to the rec team of Graham, Nick and Stuart, they live by the hashtag of #SaveLiveMusic and with what they are doing, Horsham will continue to see plenty of it.

New set menu at Bills offers plentiful portions

Bills restaurant in Horsham have a new set menu and we thought it would be good to give it a try, greeted by the ever cheerful Amy, we were soon shown to our tables and offered a drinks menu that catered for a wide range of tastes. Opting for Budvar whilst we looked through the menu seemed to be a good starting point although with the variety on offer we could have spent significantly longer choosing something to wet the whistle. When browsing the set menu, currently available SundayThursday from 5pm, you notice each course caters for all types of food lover. With 5 starters, 6 mains and 4 deserts to choose from you certainly have options. After much discussion and deliberating we settled on the chicken and sesame dumplings and the crispy calamari. Served with red chilli and lime

aioli the calamari could easily be mistaken for a main such was the portion size, crispy, full of flavour and not greasy like you would expect they are definitely going to be a favourite for Bills customers. The dumplings were served in much the same manner, a big portion, cooked just right and complimented with Bill’s own spicy chutney. With the mains, Bills offers a special of the day which on Tuesday is duck pie, we decided that was without doubt one of our choices whilst the other would be the minute steak. Again delivered to our table with enthusiasm by Amy we were impressed again with the portion size. The duck pie could have potentially fed two people and was filled with plenty of meat, complimented with a generous serving of gravy. Steak, as we all know can be a tricky one. One persons

rare is another persons medium so asking for medium rare was likely to be a gamble but it came out just right, topped with a garlic butter and complimented with fries, it was a wise choice, add to that the peppercorn sauce and we were enjoying a great steak. As with all set menus the desert option is there to tempt you and it certainly did, taking a warm triple chocolate brownie and a coconut ice cream we were once again impressed with the speed of service and the portion size. The brownie had plenty of chocolate sauce to indulge yourself in whilst the coconut ice cream gave you an extra taste experience with its mango sauce. Priced at a reasonable £19.50, this set menu is varied enough to make it somewhere you could enjoy regularly so pay them a visit and try it for yourself.

Roffey cruise past struggling Mayfield THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Mayfield 162-8 (50 overs) – Roffey 166-2 (31.1 overs) Roffey won by 8 wickets – Roffey 28 points – Mayfield 5 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey controlled this game throughout, they were never put under any pressure and, although they were a little disappointed not to bowl Mayfield out, it was a comfortable win with not far short of 20 overs unused. Premiership newcomers Mayfield won the toss and decided to bat, but, after losing two early wickets, their innings failed to gather sufficient momentum to post a really challenging total. Slow left armer Luke Barnard bowled Sussex’s Harry Finch when he was reasonably well set after facing 45 balls and, while four other batsmen got into double figures, wickets fell at regular intervals, with six of the seven Roffey bowlers used sharing the spoils, Alex Collins and James Pearce taking two wickets apiece. Earlier, Roffey’s Aussie overseas player Ben Manenti, who has been playing for Kent 2nd XI again and has more matches for them coming up, put a complete brake on the Mayfield innings – the batsmen was completely unable to touch any ball in his first over, Manenti reeling off five maidens to finish with 1-7 off his 10 over allocation. Mayfield’s later batsmen were more enterprising but good outfielding

– including outstanding catches by Rohit Jagota and Manenti restricting them to a target of 163, which was unlikely to cause an upset at Roffey’s Crawley Road stronghold, unless Mayfield could take early wickets. But, for the second week running, Roffey created a sound platform, as they set off in hot pursuit, getting past 50 in the ninth over. And, before the first over was done, Manenti had overtaken the runs that he had conceded with the ball,

going on to make 47 with 9 fours from 40 balls, Theo Rivers top-scoring with a

Mayfield couldn’t cope with Barney and Ben... typically cultured 74, after being dropped at square leg – an absolute dolly – when on 11. Mike Norris and Jagota calmly saw

Roffey home without any worries by 5.15, despite a few rain delays. It had been a difficult time for Roffey groundsman Drew Smallwood with intermittent rain and the absence of drying conditions throughout the week, together with a few showers during the match, Theo Rivers saying: “The pitch was soft, it wasn’t coming on to the bat – I like a bit of pace to play with, so I was happy to leave it to Ben while we were batting together - he made it look so easy!” Roffey skipper Matt Davies then told the District Post: “Mayfield couldn’t cope with Barney and Ben, the wicket wasn’t that straightforward, there was variable bounce and movement, but it didn’t really have any bearing on the result, and another good opening partnership set us up nicely.” Roffey had a walkover in Sunday’s ECB National Club Championship, Hastings being unable to field a competitive side. In Round 3 Roffey will play Preston Nomads at home on Sunday June 9 after Nomads beat Brighton & Hove by 129 runs at Fulking last Sunday. Meanwhile, although Roffey 2nds came seriously unstuck at Ansty on Saturday, despite 30 from opener Chris Webb and 3-30 from Fred Bridges, the 3rd XI won well at Billingshurst, thanks to 5-35 from Patrick Gibb, who then posted a 30, as did skipper Ed Barnes. And, the 4ths were also victorious, Dan Dunford scoring an unbeaten 125 before taking 4-37, backed up with 3-24 by Louie Dunford. This Saturday Roffey travel to Three Bridges. After coming back to the Premiership this season, Bridges lost their first game, but beat Cuckfield easily last week after bowling them out for just 126.

Horsham humbled at Fulking Saturday May 11 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Horsham 153-9 (46 overs) – Preston Nomads 154-4 (15.3 overs) Preston Nomads won by 6 wickets – Horsham 6 points – Nomads 28 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Visiting the former Fulking powerhouse of Sussex Premier League cricket, Preston Nomads having been serial champions in the not too distant past, Horsham elected to bat, and, after losing early wickets, recovered to 87-3. But, although Sussex’s Will Beer made 45 and Kiwi overseas Jamie Brown an unbeaten 28, Horsham’s rain truncated innings closed on 153 after Navin Patel took 4-33. Early wickets were essential if Horsham were to have any chance of winning the game, but Harrison Ward (35) and former Roffey batsman Usman Khan (45 from 26 balls) took an instant liking to the opening bowling and, by the time they were out – both dismissed by PJ Williams - 97 runs were on the board, Jake Hutson adding an unbeaten 43 to get Nomads home with plenty of overs in hand, notwithstanding late wickets by Brown and Beer. Horsham Captain Michael Thornely told the District Post: “We had a tough day against a strong team at Nomads, I think they’ll be competing for the title at the end of the season and there is no shame in being beaten by a side like that. We won our first

game handsomely, so that’s one out of two so far, against two strong sides – not a bad start, Eastbourne has certainly had it tougher (see below). We need to improve our availability, but we have some players coming back soon and I’m sure we’ll be able to field stronger sides in the weeks to come and get some more wins under our belt. Staying positive, we’re looking forward to the challenge of welcoming Middleton on Saturday – that should be a good game and I hope we’ll be able to get a stronger side out.” With Horsham 3rds and 4ths not playing, the second team lost at Cricketfield Road on Saturday – chasing Felbridge & Sunnyside’s 207-9, Max McAteer and Martin Haines both taking 3-20, Horsham were all out for 152, Gerrard Weide scoring 53 in addition to his earlier wicket, and Callum Jones making 35. On Saturday Horsham’s home 50 overs a side match against Middleton starts at 11.30 am, Middleton having won both of their matches to date. Meanwhile, the shock of the day in last Saturday’s Premiership, came at the Saffrons, where, in front of their home supporters, last year’s Premiership runner up Eastbourne were shot out for a meagre 22 from just 12.1 overs, six batsmen failing to score. Bowling unchanged, Matt Wood took 5-6 and former Sussex pro Matt Machan 5-12 to add to his earlier unbeaten 138, his second successive century. Sussex’s Delray Rawlins and Phil Salt also played for Brighton, Salt scoring 51. Brighton won by 291 runs and it was perhaps just as well that they batted first, preventing an exceptionally early finish.

Billingshurst win again – two from two Saturday May 11 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Billingshurst 174 all out (39.5 overs) Hastings & St Leonard’s Priory 140 all out (33.5 overs) Billingshurst won by 34 runs. Billingshurst 30 points – Hastings 12 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Horntye Park Billingshurst got off to a steady start after being put in by Hastings, who were relegated from the Premiership last season. Overseas player Jordan Willoughby scored 49, and fellow opener, wicket keeper Josh Wood 24, but from 54-1 Billingshurst slipped to 68-5 in a mid innings wobble. However, a lower order recovery with double figure scores from Ben Mortimer, Max Hollander, and the Alexanders – Jon and Thomas - took them to a respectable, if not killer 174, seven bowlers being required to wheedle Billingshurst out. When replying, had Hastings managed to preserve wickets and build from a position of safety, the result might have been different, but Mortimer

grabbed four quick wickets and the hosts staggered to 43-4, until, batsmen 5 and 6 – Elliot Hooper and Greg Devlin – made 23 and 56, respectively, and at 140-7 Hastings were still very much in the game. But, canny Billingshurst skipper Ben Williams had other ideas, he chipped in with 4-22, wicket keeper Josh Wood taking five catches and snaring a stumping, giving Billingshurst victory by 34 runs. Williams told the District Post: “It was a good track, but it was cloudy and there was rain about, so there was something in it for bowlers – it nipped around a bit, making it difficult for the batsmen. We did well to claw back from our mid innings crisis, then we bowled tightly - although he didn’t take a wicket, Paul Osborne bowled 9 overs for 20, keeping them in check. Josh Wood had another excellent game and it was a good all round team win – two out of two. We’ve got a useful squad together and are looking forward to welcoming Ifield on Saturday, the second of the two teams relegated from the Premier League last season.” After losing key players during the winter, Ifield beat Goring by Sea convincingly last Saturday.
