Plum Jam’s vintage Volkswagens charm Horsham for a 4th year
Photos by Toby Phillips Horsham’s Carfax hosted another great family day out on Bank Holiday Sunday (26 May) when a bigger than ever procession of vintage Volkswagen cars and camper vans came to town. The Plum Jam team, supported by Horsham Markets and Horsham District Council, brought their special blend of air-chilled vibes to Horsham for their fourth annual show. Some 160 “v’dubs” graced the town and new, this year, was the introduction of a ‘California Zone’, thanks to a partnership with The REC Rooms Bowling Alley located on the edge of Horsham Park – a great after party music show rounded off the event.
A particular highlight was Henfield based VW Kamper’s inclusion of the first electric conversion Volkswagen, the only one in the UK, which drew crowds throughout the day. The coolest of vehicles were parked up throughout the town centre amongst a wide variety of shops in the Carfax, West Street, the Forum and East Street, hosting many excellent eateries and street food providers for visitors to stop by for a bite to eat whilst enjoying the vintage views. A fabulous selection of stalls, street food and drink were curated by Horsham Markets by Food Rocks, and Manic Mundays presented a programme of music on

the bandstand. DJ Brian Mole spun the decks on the Forum, plus there were dance displays from Horsham’s Upbeat Dance Company. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Horsham Town, Councillor Peter Burgess, said: “The Plum Jam Volkswagen Festival was another fantastic event for Horsham Town Centre. “The town was full of people enjoying the exhibits and the range of music: Rock at The Rec Rooms, more traditional music with the British Legion Band at the Park Bandstand and a broad programme of local musicians in the Carfax. “There was an amazing variety of food and drink too, altogether making for a great free family day

out. Well done to the Plum Jam team and all their partners.” This year, Plum Jam 19 supported Storrington based charity, Auntie Val’s Ability Centre, who generate work opportunities for people with disabilities, producing a famous range of artisan preserves. To celebrate their association, Auntie Val’s were in the Carfax alongside Plum Jam’s merchandise stall, selling a special edition of their Victoria Plum Extra Jam and a wide range of their sweet and savoury preserves. Supporting the safe movement of display vehicles into the town were the Blood Transport bike heroes, SERV Sussex, who were on hand throughout the day to spread

A man who brutally assaulted his elderly mother after she asked him to turn his music down has been jailed. John Ayensu slapped his mother to both sides of the face, causing her to fall to the floor, after she requested he lowered the volume. He then picked up a broken wooden table and used this to repeatedly hit his victim over the head, and kicked her as she remained on the floor. The incident occurred at their home in Kithurst Lane, Storrington, in the early hours of 27 December. Following the assault the victim went to sleep, and woke around 2.45pm the next day to find her car was missing. It was at this point she called police to report the assault and the stolen vehicle. Officers attended and the 72-yearold victim was taken to hospital, where she was treated for multiple injuries. She was later released and taken to a place of safety. On 30th May 2019, Loxwood’s Queen Katheryn Adelina I decided that enough was enough, and if the UK’s politicians weren’t going to sort things out then The Kingdom of Loxwood would have to go it alone. Over 500 cyclists hit the Downs to raise funds for local hospices
On Sunday 12 May, 525 people took to their bikes and cycled either 30 or 60km in the third annual Hit the Downs MTB event, organised by local hospices, St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House. Sponsorship money is still coming in, but the event is on track to raise around £21,000 for St Barnabas House and £34,000 for Chestnut Tree House, which will cover almost five days of all care services provided by Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and over 13 days
of Day Hospice care at St Barnabas House adults’ hospice. A range of different people took part in the event, from individuals and families riding in memory of loved ones, to keen mountain bikers and corporate teams. Riders opted for either a 30 or 60km route, which started and ended at Adur Recreation Ground in Shorehamby-Sea. The first wave of cyclists set off at 7:15am, and started arriving back mid-morning, with the final participants crossing the
finish line just before 4pm. Chestnut Tree House Penny Hoskins and Cherie Tooley cycled 30km for Chestnut Tree House in memory of their children, Darren and Georgia, who passed away 11 and nine years ago respectively. They are already talking about signing up for the 60km route in 2020! Cherie said: “We used the Stars room at Chestnut Tree House when our daughter passed away. We were able to spend time there, which was just so valuable to us, and Chestnut Tree House helped with everything.” Penny also used the Stars bereavement suite at the House when her son, Darren, passed away, and explained how Chestnut Tree House is still important to her and her family today: “11 years on, they’re still there at the end of the phone. Life does carry on, but those days are still there when we’re really missing who we’ve lost, and I know that I can still talk to somebody and visit the memory garden. Darren used to go for respite as well, which was great. We could all go there and have a rest, while still being with Darren. But also, we could disappear, knowing he was very well looked after, and spend time with his sister, which was so valuable.” A total of 362 people took part in Hit the Downs MTB for Chestnut
Tree House. The first 30km rider back was Martin Smith, while Pete Bundy completed the 60km route in the fastest time (3 hours 47 minutes). The highest fundraisers were Team Runkle, who have raised over £2,000 between seven of them, by cycling the 30km route. St Barnabas House A total of 163 riders put their physical and mental endurance to the test in support of St Barnabas House. The Tuxedo Tourists, a group of friends and family from Worthing, were the first St Barnabas House 30km riders to cross the finish line in a time of 1 hour 50 minutes. Bryan Carter, 42 from Worthing, said: “We all love mountain biking so, naturally, wanted to help St Barnabas raise money and have a laugh off road on our mountain bikes. We decided to dress up in our tuxedos and get muddy in our smart clothes to encourage everyone to sponsor us, and together we have raised over £500 for the hospice.” The ride was made even more meaningful for Dale and his family as just six days before the event they sadly suffered the loss of Dale’s mother in law, Diana Palmer from Shoreham-by-Sea, who was receiving care from the St Barnabas Hospice at Home team. Mark Tyler, 54 from Upper Beed-
ing, was the highest St Barnabas House fundraiser with a total of £2,150. He completed the 60km route in memory of his mother, Angela Tyler, who was cared for by the hospice and sadly passed away on 20 April 2019. Lucy Brady, Events & Campaigns Fundraiser for St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House said: “We introduced Hit the Downs MTB to our events calendar in 2017 and are delighted that it has been so successful. We had our highest number of registered riders this year and everyone seemed to really enjoy the day. It’s great to get such positive feedback about an event and we’re already looking forward to planning the next one. “Both St Barnabas House and Chestnut Tree House rely heavily on the support of the local community so that they can continue to provide all their vital specialist care services, so events like Hit the Downs MTB are invaluable. “We’re hoping to raise around £55,000 in total and would like to thank everyone involved in making this happen. Firstly, the cyclists, but also the people who supported and sponsored them, and our amazing volunteers; as well as the companies and organisations who donated refreshments or gave up their time to offer support to the riders.”

Volunteering Week - Letter from The Children’s Society Across West Sussex are amazing people who are helping to transform young lives by taking action with The Children’s Society. This Volunteers Week (1-7 June) we would like to thank each and every one of them. Right now there are 7,233 children living in West Sussex classed as children ‘in need’ and sadly this number continues to increase steadily. We help thousands of children
and young people in many different ways; including those affected by poverty, mental health issues and victims of criminal or sexual exploitation. In the past year, nearly 10,000 volunteers gave us their time, contributing an incredible 478,000 hours. There are a variety of ways to help, from supporting young people directly in our services, volunteering in our shops, organising events, taking part in challenges, campaign-
ing, donating, or increasing local awareness of our work. If you are inspired to get involved, contact us on 0300 303 7000 or supportercare@childrenssocety.org.uk we’d love to talk to you. The need is great and every hour volunteered, every campaign action taken, every donation made makes a real difference. Yours Sincerely, Nick Roseveare, CEO The Children’s Society

Rally call for local volunteers Horsham District Council’s Voluntary Sector Support team is hosting a series of community pop up events across the District’s libraries to celebrate National Volunteers’ Week from 1 to 7 June 2019. The Council is keen to celebrate the major contribution that local volunteers give throughout the whole of Horsham District, across a broad spectrum of sectors, and thank them all for their efforts. Additionally, the Council is looking to encourage local people to get involved with the many diverse voluntary and community groups in our area. The roadshow of community events is set to start in Horsham Library on Saturday 1 June from 10.30am to 1pm. It will then move on to Southwater Library on 3 June from 10.30 to 12.30pm and Henfield Library from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. On 4 June the roadshow moves to Billingshurst Library from 2pm to 5pm where there will be a Volunteer Tea Party offering plenty of opportunity to chat to the Council team about volunteering in the community and how the service works.
On 5 June the pop up event will be in Storrington Library from 10am to 12pm. On 1 June the event will take place at Pulborough’s Wyevale Garden Centre from 11am to 2pm; it will then transfer to Pulborough Library on 6 June from 10am to 12pm. Steyning Library will host the final event on 7 June from 10am to 12pm. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be available to all who come along for an informal chat about volunteering. There is no minimum time commitment to volunteering generally. Some organisations are happy for a volunteer to help them on an ad hoc basis – as infrequent as one event a year, others might look for a longer term commitment. Volunteering is extremely flexible and can fit around work commitments, part time or otherwise, grandparent or caring duties - there is something for everyone. Existing Volunteers are also invited to the celebratory tea party taking place at Billingshurst Library, where Horsham District Council councillors will be meeting and thanking people for their invaluable contribution to the District.

Robots to help kids unwind after SATs Southwater spoilt for choice
Robots will be helping hardworking Horsham school kids to unwind after their SATs, thanks to a new initiative which will open up the wonders of technology. TechyTots is offering free workshops to schools whose Year 2 and 6 children have just completed their SATs , as a way of rewarding and celebrating the achievement of pupils. The company, which is run by Sarah Hamilton, brings together technology and play to introduce children to coding - the system which makes it possible to create everything from websites to computers. Now teachers have the chance to apply for two one-hour taster
sessions, which will see Sarah Hamilton from Horsham visit the lucky schools with her collection of robots and gadgets. Sarah Hamilton said: “We are the very first class of this kind and our aim is to work on the first steps of coding with children at a young age. We believe this is instrumental for helping them to prepare for the technical world we now live in whilst making it fun. “We decided to run the SATs initiative to celebrate the children’s success and offer schools a rewarding, fun activity to de-stress the children after all of their hard work. “In our sessions, we encourage children to code by using robots
and the most advanced toys available on the market. We also use unplugged play and activities which engage problem solving skills, early maths, confidence, critical thinking and creativity.” Founded in May 2017, by Gemma Murray, from South Shields, TechyTots, runs in number of schools and nurseries across the north east and south east and already has nine franchises throughout the UK and Ireland - with aims to expand even further. Recently the business partnered with the British multinational enterprise software company Sage, to deliver STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) days in its UK and Ireland offices. It was also nominated for ‘Best New Children’s Activity’ in the What’s on 4 Kids Awards 2018 and Gemma snapped up the ‘Women in STEM’ accolade at the North East Business Woman of the Year Awards in 2018. Sarah Hamilton added: “It’s very exciting at the moment for TechyTots, we have lots of plans in the pipeline and are ever expanding. We are always keen to hear from prospective franchisees too, to help spread the love of coding even further. “We teach many children who have been taking their SATs this month and would like to wish them all lots of luck.” To apply for the free taster session, schools need to email Sarah. Hamilton@techytots.co.uk by Wednesday 5th of June , including the school’s name, address and year group they would like to nominate.
with new sports facilities Southwater Sports Club is springing into life as the newly finished amenities are getting some welldeserved action. The state-of-the-art new sports facilities have been built by award winning developer, Berkeley Homes, on land next to its stunning village development, Broadacres. Dozens of keen sports people turned up on a balmy Spring evening to get their first taste of just how magnificent these new resources are. Southwater already has a very strong community spirit and these new facilities will serve to increase this unity even further. Berkeley Homes has built a host of facilities that include an impressive pavilion with a large bar area, home and away team changing rooms and wonderful spaces for the community to get together. The pavilion has so much space that the residents of Southwater will be able to spend time with neighbours, team mates, school friends or even host a big party. A new cricket pitch, two football pitches, two tennis courts, a skateboard park and a multi active games court have recently been completed and are ready to be put to good use. Just as the cricket season hots up, the football season closes and the juniors will be hosting their end of season event at the new club on June 2nd to mark the end of an excellent season. Neil Harding, Chairman of Southwater Sports Club, commented: “Excitement is mounting here in Southwater as we open

Silly Scarecrow sightings in Cowfold
The Cowfold Horticultural Society’s annual family competition, to design and display a scarecrow in your garden, saw some weird and wacky characters appear across the village over the Easter break, with winners announced at the sell-out plant sale on May Day. First prize went to a mobile scarecrow on a trike named Bob, designed and built by Freddie from Alley Groves. Polly Pyjamas came second, crafted by Daisy, age 10 from Barleycroft. Oakfield Road saw two winning entries, with Legless Lacey, created by Sienna and Finley, age 9 and 6, taking third prize, and Leo’s twin Cooks awarded fifth prize. The children and helpers at Country Mice Nursery also entered, with their Gardener scarecrow receiving fourth prize, collected by Thomas. Winners received child-size

gardening equipment including spades, forks and watering cans to inspire those young green fingers. Society Secretary, Marie Hall, was thrilled with the standard of entries, and the community’s response to the plant sale, attended by over 170 people: “People were queuing even before the doors opened, and some motorists passing through the village stopped by to make a purchase, having seen residents laden down with plants and vegetables leaving the village hall! There was a real buzz about the sale, with all plants sourced from local nurseries within a 10 mile radius as well as those expertly grown by one of our members”. Cowfold’s Horticultural Society, now in its 61st year, is open to all age groups. Forthcoming events, funded by the plant sale profits, include a Late Summer Show on
Saturday 7th September at the Village Hall, where floral art, vegetables, flowers, photography and handicrafts will be on display. Another key event in the calendar is on Friday, 25 October, when the Commonwealth War Graves Commission will be holding a talk on its history and how its work both at home and abroad continues to ensure we remember those lost in conflict. The next meeting is at 8pm tonight (Friday, 31 May) where Paul Dalby will be speaking about Dahlias, which are enjoying a resurgence in popularity amongst gardeners both here and abroad, with 2019 being USA’s Year of the Dahlia. Visitors are welcomed at all meetings, which cost £1.50 for members and £3 for non-members, including refreshments. Two local businesses shop share Ladies clothing and accessories retailer Covet has joined forces with Martha’s Barn in a unique shop share. This permanent agreement between two town favourites keeps Covet on our high street after owner Lyn planned to move her store out of Horsham due to the high rates she was having to pay on the original property. When asked about the agreement and how it came about, Lyn is full of praise for how the Martha’s barn team helped her, “I was in the process of transferring stock to my Brighton store when they guys asked what was happening, I told them I was having to go due to the cost and that’s when they proposed I shop share with
them.” A meeting was soon organised, “Nicki and I hit it off right away, we agreed on the idea instantly. I’m so happy to be staying in such a vibrant town with such great people.” Despite it being early days in this new relationship, Nikki from Martha’s barn says, “The feedback has been amazing and the addition of Covet to our shop has been such a good move. Our footfall has increased as a result and now you can cover two bits of shopping in one.” In a time when retail is under the microscope it is great to see two local business pulling together. We wish them all the best in this exciting joint venture.

Three more Sussex charities in public vote for £500 funding Three charities are hoping to be the recipients of £500, after being shortlisted in the latest round of NYEs Building Supplies campaign ‘Proud to be Local’. After receiving nominations for causes across the county, the builders’ merchant, which is based in Kingsfold, has announced its shortlisted finalists and is calling out to the public to vote for its favourite. The group with the most votes will win. Managing Director at NYEs Building Supplies, Rex Nye, said: “We are delighted to receive more exciting nominations for our second round of Proud to be Local 2019. Last time the votes were extremely close so every vote counts. Whether you’re casting
your vote by email, Facebook or at our depot, we encourage everyone to take part and help make a difference to one of these very worthy causes.” The three causes that have been shortlisted this time are: Supporters of Castlewood School (SOCS), Southwater Castlewood Primary School in Southwater opened in 1997 and has 210 pupils in Reception to Year 6. SOCS, which supports the school through a variety of fundraising activities, would like to use the funding to help renovate the school’s pond and surrounding area. This includes installing new fencing, benches and paving. 1st Roffey Scout Group The 1st Roffey Scout Group has
been part of the community since 1920 and is the oldest scout group in Horsham. It is made up of 22 volunteers and hosts 122 young people from the surrounding area. It would like to use the funds to renovate its scout hut by installing a new floor in the main hall. West Sussex Music Trust As part of its Musical Chairs initiative, West Sussex Music Trust is extending an open invitation to people and businesses across West Sussex to participate in a county-wide game of musical chairs to help equip its young musicians with chairs specifically designed for orchestral use. The trust is hoping to secure a total of 100 chairs at £200 each. The funds will go towards helping to
achieve its goal. Votes can be cast in three simple ways; Either by visiting NYEs Building Supplies depot in Kingsfold along the A24 and posting a token in the relevant voting box, clicking the chosen group on the poll that will be pinned to the top of NYEs Facebook page, or by emailing proudtobelocal@dwnye. co.uk and putting the name of the group being voted for in the subject line (only one email vote per address will be counted). Voting will close at midnight on Sunday 9 June 2019.

Local brain injury support service grateful for generous donation Kerwin Court, a residential support service for people with brain injury in Horsham, unveiled a new piece of physiotherapy equipment, thanks to a grant from a local foundation. The Steve Bernard Foundation donated £500 to fund the replacement of CardioWall bulbs. A CardioWall is an interactive piece of equipment that allows the users to choose from 5 different programmes, depending on their ability, which helps with rehabilitation, encouragement of exercise and social inclusion. It didn’t take
long for the service users to challenge the staff to a competition. Alex Hill, the Assistant Manager at Kerwin Court, said: “Thank you so much to the Trustees for granting us the funding to carry out the replacement of bulbs on the CardioWall. The service users are all incredibly excited to have their sessions as soon as possible. This is going to have a positive impact on those who struggle to find exercising and rehabilitation fun, but this piece of kit does exactly that”.

It was a hugely successful day with lots of families turning up to enjoy our celebration Kingsfold-based builders’ merchant NYEs Building Supplies has raised £794 for the charity Rainy Day Trust during a family fun day at its depot. The event, named ‘Have a NYEs day’, was held to celebrate the company’s recent rebrand and completion of its new 1000m2 warehouse. Attended by more than 1,000 people, it included a variety of free activities and the chance to meet Bob the Builder. Raffle tickets were sold in aid of the charity during the event,
which was run by one of the charity’s trustees, Aaron Frogley, along with his son, Connor. Top prizes included family days out to Drusillas Park and Fishers Farm Park, cinema tickets, power tools and restaurant vouchers. The Rainy Day Trust is the UK’s only charity supporting the home improvement workforce in times of need. Rex Nye, who is Managing Director at NYEs, said: “It was a hugely successful day with lots of families turning up to enjoy

Sadly, more and more people are turning to us for financial assistance. The money raised at NYEs family fun day will go towards supporting them by helping to make ends meet, and providing the necessary advice, counselling and training so they can get back on their feet.”

This stunning and colourful exhibition, opening on 8 June until 20 July, showcases some of the great artists of Sussex today whilst connecting to the past masters as it also explores the fascinating story of this 90 year old Horsham based Association. Adventures in Art at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery reveals how a Mr. J. T. McGaw founded
the Association through a call for artists to exhibit at the newly opened Horsham Drill Hall. The response was encouraging enough to create the Association three months later. The Museum will be displaying one of the paintings from that very first meeting, Bainbridge Copnall’s Calves at Horsham Market, alongside art painted by current
‘LIFE AFTER SHERLOCK’ ‘Devil’s Drum Productions’ will tour a new play in the spring of 2019. The production company will perform 21 shows at 17 theatres in the south of England with a cast of seven. Unusually for a Sherlockian drama, this new story centres on Dr John Watson and not the great detective. In the drama Watson has a personal mystery to solve but without the help of his retired friend Sherlock Holmes. Although Holmes does appear quite a lot in the play, he has now taken to the South Downs and has started a new career as a Beekeeper. Watson discovers that his late wife Mary Morstan may have passed in circumstances that
were not as originally thought and that other aspects of her life may not have been as they seemed! With the help and support of old acquaintances such as Inspector Lestrade and Mrs Hudson, Watson uses his retired friend’s old deductive techniques to try and solve the mystery for himself. The story twists and turns and takes Watson from Baker Street to clandestine meetings across foggy London and to a séance. Performance: Friday 7 Jun , 7:30pm, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets: Available from The Capitol Box Office: 01403750220 or online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com
members for the exhibition. The Association’s aim was to encourage art, including the crafts, by holding an annual exhibition of artists born or working in Sussex. The first exhibition took place in Horsham, a town then devoid of any art gallery, unlike the holiday resorts along the coast. It wasn’t until 2010 that the town museum created an art gallery so for 80 years the Association’s annual show was the main focus to see and appreciate art in the town and district. This encouraged the Association to invite artists to exhibit, including Brangwyn, Duncan Grant and Epstein, which broadened the appeal of the shows and gave a real opportunity to see outstanding artists’ original works. Adventures in Art draws on Horsham Museum’s collection of art acquired over the last 60 years as it sought to hold works created by Horsham District people. Research undertaken for the exhibition revealed their unbeknown membership of the Association, for example the popular watercolourist Edwin Harris, bird painter Noel Hopkin and the artist/etcher Dr Sparrow. This exhibition is not, though, one of just retrospection. The
Association wanted to be part of the District-wide Year of Culture; this exhibition will display some of the best art around. Throughout the Association’s existence, commentators have argued “where is the contemporary?”. As this exhibition shows the Association’s view is that talent and quality of art is in itself worthy of exhibition, irrespective of what school or trend of art it follows. With art by leading Sussex artists, Alison Ingram, Dennis Roxby Bott, Ben Smith, Claire Phillips, John Davies, Angela Britton, Gordon Rushmer and 20 other artists it will be a show that art lovers will not want to miss. From oil, to watercolour to acrylic to sculpture and spanning 90 years of Sussex artists at work, Adventures in Art - The Association of Sussex Artists at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is an exhibition that shows how much art has been part of the culture of Horsham District and beyond. A number of the current member’s exquisite artworks will be available for purchase. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am -5pm. Free Admission. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org.

ARRIVAL: THE HITS OF ABBA 45 years on from the iconic Eurovision win that spring boarded them into superstardom, you’re invited to celebrate one of the biggest selling pop bands of all time - ABBA. Arrival’s multi award-winning show is returning to The Hawth Crawley on Monday 3 June, following sell out shows in over 20 countries worldwide, bringing the magic of ABBA to stages across the UK. Benny Andersson performer, Mark, said: “We have been performing as ABBA for over 20 years now, and the show has evolved quite a lot. Over the years we have added more and more songs and costumes, and we are constantly striving to make the show bigger and better with each year. We love it. We really enjoy every minute. “The music of ABBA appeals to all age groups because it’s joyful and infection. You just can’t help smiling when
you hear the first few bars of Dancing Queen or Mamma Mia. Arrival - The Hits of ABBA is an energetic, upbeat, vibrant, colourful and spectacular extrABBAganza! A non-stop party and a great night for all the family.” The high-energy production features ABBA’s best loved hits including Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Voulez Vous, and of course Waterloo, plus many more! With a winning formula of fantastic harmonies, authentic costumes and first-class vocals and musicians, Arrival brings to life the extraordinary songwriting talents of Benny and Bjorn, recreating the true feel and thrill of a live ABBA show. Performance: Monday 3 June, 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets priced £25 are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and www.hawth. co.uk

Comedy Beats return to The Holbrook Club in Horsham on Saturday 8 June. This will be our fourth show at this venue. The previous two were both sold out and we are hoping for another full house this time around. We set the company up in late 2015 and over the last few years have seen the company go from strength to strength. Our formula is simple, we only use the very best comedians from the club circuit. Every act we use has years of experience and our aim is to bring the quality of show that you would have to travel to somewhere like London or Brighton to see, to towns like Horsham. The cost of a ticket to one of our shows is regularly cheaper than a return train ticket to London. Add to that the price of drinks in a city compared to what
you will pay at a venue like The Holbrook and you can see why it’s becoming such a winning formula. From putting on just 11 shows in 2016 we are now at a point where we will produce over 60 this year. Every now and then I book an act who can’t be advertised because they are going to tour soon. If the promoter of that tour sees that the comedian is doing a club gig in a venue near a theatre they are likely to perform in, it could jeopardise their relationship. Our headline act for this show can’t be named, but I can tell you he has not only appeared on Live at the Apollo, but also Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. In my opinion, he is an absoloute comedy legend. Considering we have already brought Angela Barnes, Nathan Caton, Dominic Holland and Robert White to perform at The Holbrook, when I say of all the acts we’ve had at this venue, I am more excited about this Special Guest than anyone else that
we’ve had there before. The opening act for this one is the highly respected Adam Bloom. Widely regarded as one of the best comedians of his generation. Ricky Gervais said of him “He’s been one of my favourite stand ups for about ten years. He has not only meticulous, brilliant lines but also a fragile and intense honesty.” His TV credits include Russell Howard’s Good News and Mock The Week, he is the perfect act to open a show of this quality. After the first interval, it will be the turn of Sean Meo. Like Adam, he is held in incredibly high regard by both comedians and audiences alike. 30 years ago, he swapped a career as a snooker player to become a stand up. Quickly establishing himself as a regular at all of the country’s top comedy clubs, he then went on to win Time Out’s Comedian of the Year. With over 40 TV credits to his name, including Tonight at the London Palladium, he has a dry but punchy style and is definitely an act not to be missed. The Compere for the evening is Michael Legge. Equally at home improvising or delivering top notch material, he always engages the audience brilliantly. Having warmed up for Television shows that include 8 Out of 10 Cats and Would I Lie To You, his expertise shines through. With Michael at the helm, I know it is going to be a great night. It all takes place at The Holbrook Club in Horsham on Saturday the 8th of June. Tickets are priced at £8 for members and £12 for nonmembers are available either direct from the venue or online at www. comedybeats.com

Pitch renovation under way at Gorings Mead Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter With first team, reserves and Under 23 fixtures at the Horsham Family Lawyers’ Stadium at Gorings Mead there is a considerable amount of football traffic and, as soon as each season is over groundsman Ron Moulding gets pitch renovation work under way. And, this year Ron, the Club’s President, is working hard with YM Life Member Peter Potter to ensure that the playing surface will be back to its customary prime condition in good time for the pre season friendlies. Between each season the type of work
sponsored by
undertaken is specifically targeted at the most pressing priority and this year YM are working closely with Grasstex Limited, whose Matt Clark, Lucas Ozana and Richard Conway are providing expertise to vertidrain, overseed and dimple seed the pitch. Meanwhile, arrangements to produce a challenging list of pre season friendlies are in hand, and with more fixture information to follow, an evening home game has been scheduled for Tuesday July 23rd, when YMCA will play Guildford City. Although there is automatic promotion for only the champion and there are no play offs for the other top teams in the
Southern Combination Football League Premier Division, in which YM finished as runner up, towards the end of last season there was the outside chance that YM might gain promotion. That possibility followed the demise of Thamesmead Town from the Bostik League South East Division, and suggestions that a club might not accept promotion, accompanied by speculation that at least one other club could be withdrawing from the league. But, with such rumours appearing groundless, it has been confirmed that YM will be remaining in the SCFL Premier Division for the 2019-2020 season.

Four wickets fell in four balls, three ducks in a row condemning Grinstead from a position of strength to a parlous 111-5 with Cammish watching helplessly from the bowler’s end. A 48 run stand for the sixth wicket staged a partial recovery, but although Sturmer and George Cave posted lusty thirties, a 214 run requirement was unlikely to prevent a Roffey victory unless Grinstead could inflict serious early blows. He unstintingly encouraged and respected all players, girls and boys, whatever their ability, age, creed or colour, and not only remembered all of their names, but those of their parents and siblings, too, and at this year’s tournament there were children competing in the 8th memorial event watched by grandparents who had themselves been coached by Dr Dew many years ago. Born in the town, in addition to many outside activities, John Dew MBE was associated with Horsham CC for an extremely lengthy period, notably as Club Captain, Chairman and then – for 47 years – President. His colts’ coaching structure has produced a conveyor belt of First Class players at Cricketfield Road, including Chris Nash, Robin Martin-Jenkins, Will Beer and, latterly, Tom Haines. With home advantage Cuckfield elected to bat and were soon in big trouble, three wickets for over-
seas player Jamie Brown and one for Sussex’s Tom Haines reducing the hosts to 18-4. But, with Horsham eyeing up the prospect of a second win in this campaign, their hopes were dashed by 257 run fifth wicket partnership between last out Harry Clark, whose 158 included 15 fours and 8 sixes, in tandem with 91 from Marcus Campopiano, six bowlers being unable to separate the pair until the damage had been done. Brown finished with 3-35 and PJ Williams 2-87. Horsham needed to get off to a good start, and, with Haines in good form, they did, reaching 134 before they lost their second wicket, and at 228-3 they were still well-placed to pull off a memorable victory. But wickets fell at regular intervals, Haines scoring 107 from 114
balls. Skipper Michael Thornely and Willams chipped in with 45 apiece and four other batsmen made double figure scores, but Horsham could not quite get over the line, late wickets by Billy M-Collinson (4-76) and Tom Weston finally undermining their strong push for the runs. Horsham, though, fared better in the Sussex Cup on Sunday, when At Felbridge Sunnyside’s Chartham Ground they inserted the hosts. Felbridge put on 52 for the first wicket with Captain Jack Williams making 39, but his dismissal sparked a collapse from 70-2 to 89-7, from which there was to be no recovery, no other batsman reaching double figures. Mali Bardouille-Lewis took 4-19 and James Brehaut 3-6 from his four frugal overs. A target of 107
was unlikely to discomfort Horsham and Michael Thornely and Akshay Ramani knocked off the runs with six and a half overs unused, hitting 17 fours between them, Horsham winning by 10 wickets. On Saturday there is a highlight of the local sporting calendar – Horsham v . Roffey at Cricketfield Road. With bragging rights at stake, matches between Horsham and Roffey are always keenly fought – Horsham have been League Champions on eight occasions and serial cup winners, including the National cup at Lord’s, but latterly Roffey have usurped the crown with four championship titles in five years, adding spice to the quest for local supremacy. Last year Horsham strengthened their side with three Sussex
players - Jofra Archer, George Garton and Will Beer, it might have been four, but Tom Haines was sidelined with concussion – and, unsurprisingly, won easily, Roffey’s only league defeat of the season ahead of finishing champions again. For this year’s match Archer will be on England duty at the World Cup and Sussex start a four day Championship match at Lord’s on Sunday, which will undoubtedly have a bearing on the availability of county players. Meanwhile, with 2pm starts, Horsham Thursday XI’s programme of matches begins this Thursday (30th), running through week by week to August 29th, beginning and ending with matches against longstanding combatants Brighton Brunswick, with all but one of the 14 fixtures at home.

Billingshurst clear leaders after fourth win but slip in cup THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Billingshurst 198 all out (43 overs) Goring by Sea 152 all out (38 overs) Billingshurst won by 46 runs. Billingshurst 28 points – Goring 12 Sunday May 26 – Sussex Cricket League T20 Sussex Cup Bognor Regis 170-6 (20 overs) – Billingshurst 142-7 (20 overs) - Bognor won by 28 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst enjoyed their visit to the coast last Saturday – despite losing two early wickets they recovered to post a defendable total for their strong bowling attack and came away winners. They are now 16 points clear at the top of the table after Hassocks-based contenders St James’s Montefiore were overturned by mid table Burgess Hill. At Goring, Billingshurst’s Aussie overseas player, Jordan Willoughby, top-scored with 38, Paul Osborne and Sam Dobson also making thirties, supported with twenties from Stuart Barber and evergreen Scott Stratton. Ross Baumann and Ben Cartwright took three wickets apiece, restricting Billingshurst, but a target of 199 proved too demanding for bottom of the table Goring, still searching for their first win of the season. Replying, Goring, though, got off to a promising start with useful early contributions. But, after the top three batsmen were wheedled out, Osborne taking three of the first four wickets
before skipper Ben Williams and Louis Storey despatched the middle and lower order, Goring’s innings fizzled out with little further resistance. Osborne finished with 3-21, Storey, Williams and Andy Barr, each taking two modestly-priced wickets, Billingshurst winning by a comfortable 46 run margin, Ben Williams telling the District Post: “This was a good win for us although we probably didn’t perform as well as we can, but it was all the more satisfying to win when we had to scrap for it. We had a couple of silly run outs, but our subsequent batsmen chipped in with useful runs. Then their batsmen got on top early, so we had to bowl well.” On Sunday Billingshurst were eliminated from the Sussex T20 Cup, courtesy of a century by former Horsham player, wicketkeeper Ryan Maskell after visitors Bognor had elected to bat at Jubilee Fields. Andy Barr took 3-40, and Alexander Lowther 2-33, but, despite only three other batsmen getting to double figures, skipper Maskell’s 114 enabled Bognor to post 170. For Billingshurst opener Jordan Willoughby made 40 and Stuart Barber 62, but the target proved too daunting, Bognor winning by 28 runs, Ben Williams commenting: “Maskell was the only real difference between the two sides.” In the league, Billingshurst return home on Saturday to welcome high-flying St James’s Montefiore, Williams predicting: “That’ll be a test, they’re a good side …… but they slipped up last week.”
News of Horsham and Roffey’s junior sides Saturday May 25 – Feeder team roundup Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Cricketfield Road Horsham 2nds won the toss and batted first, with 65 from opener Rhys Beckwith, thirties from Harry Huddlestone and Oliver Haines, and twenties from Finlay Donald and Ed Clark getting them to 254 all out from 43.5 overs. When Worthing 2nds replied Andrew and Tom Williams took five wickets between them and Max McAteer another, but Horsham’s opponents knocked of the runs at the end of the 44th over. Horsham 3rds visited Southgate Park, inserting Crawley, with Deyan Patel, Louis Cooper and Darren Jordan each taking two wickets, Crawley posting 217-8 from their 40 overs. In reply opener Simon Hughes scored 59 and Darren Jordan 39, but Horsham fell 40 runs short. Horsham 4ths were obliged to concede against Southwater. For Roffey, the 2nds were at Worthing’s Manor Sports

Ground, where the former Premier League hosts won the toss and made 207-7, Sachin Naik and Sam Henderson taking two wickets apiece and Captain for the day Mark Pavlovic, and Fred Bridges one each. Then, a strong batting display enabled Roffey to win by 8 wickets in 36.1 overs, thanks to 87 not out from Naik, 54 from Chris Webb, also unbeaten, and 31 from wicketkeeper Sanchit Batra. With three wins from four games Roffey 2nds are now 3rd in the table. Roffey thirds played at Millenium Meadow, where they were put in to bat by West Wittering, scoring 200-7 off 40 overs, thanks to 76 from Ed Barnes and 37 from Mohammed Ali. Roffey won by 22 runs after restricting their hosts to 178-9, Lewis Shivnarain taking 2-16 and Mohammed Ali 2-33. While, at Faygate, although five Roffey players reached double figures, the team was bowled out for 103, Warnham overtaking in 21.4 overs despite Mark Murphy’s 3-44
Horsham’s Jofra Archer added to England’s World Cup squad
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter As widely anticipated, and previously highlighted in the District Post, Horsham all-rounder Jofra Archer, a former West Indies Under 19 player, has been added to England’s World Cup squad after recently playing for England in One Day Internationals against Ireland and Pakistan. 24 year old Barbados-born Archer was not selected for the initial squad, but, after displaying his skills in an England shirt, it was not unexpectedly decided that his extra pace added a new dimension to England’s line up. His athletic fielding and ability with the bat were additionally favourable factors. Archer had been encouraged to play club cricket in Sussex by his fellow countryman friend Chris Jordan, the county’s England player. And, while with Horsham Archer had games for Sussex 2nd XI, going on to make his first team debut against Pakistan at Hove in July 2016, when he impressed with four wickets on the opening day. Archer played for Horsham last season at Cricketfield Road against Roffey, and, the following day
in a cup game at East Grinstead. Before coming to Horsham he had a season with Sussex Premier League side Middleton, in a brief whirlwind innings at Roffey smashing a ball through a bedroom window with a huge six. At Horsham Archer was clearly talented, but there was no real hint that he would so rapidly become one of the most successful bowlers and useful lower order batsmen in the world, scoring 72 in his Championship debut against Essex. Generating real pace from his smooth action and hitting hard with the bat subsequently produced excellent returns, making him a target acquisition in the IPL, where he recently played for Rajasthan Royals, having also featured for other T20 franchises, Hobart Hurricanes and Quetta Gladiators. Jofra Chioke Archer has an English father and a British Passport and had expected a long wait to come into contention for an England call up, until the qualification period was reduced from seven to three years, making him eligible from March 17th, the move drawing criticism, the criteria appearing to have been changed to accommodate one player. Although Archer has played only 28 First Class games and made just seventeen 50 over appearances, he has proved himself highly capable in all formats, including 93 T20 matches, and undoubtedly adds strength to any international side given his exciting performances to date, especially when bowling under the cosh. The World Cup started on May 30th at venues in England and Wales – England playing South Africa at the Oval on the opening day. Former
England Captain Michael Vaughan says: “If you are in a selection meeting, you have got one school of thought: is there anybody out there who can improve the team? Is there any player who can bring something that we do not have already? In Jofra Archer, you think, absolutely. The England one-day team are very, very good but in games they have lost over the past few years they have lacked a bit of pace, a bit of nous and that ability to bowl under pressure. Archer ticks every one of those boxes. I am not being harsh on any of the other bowlers, but Archer has been outstanding.” England player David Willey was an unfortunate casualty of Archer’s World Cup selection. Quietly spoken Archer has wisely been diplomatic, saying: “I’m going to give it my best shot. Of course I want to play in the World Cup, it’s a great chance for me to show what I can do. I’ve worked pretty much all my life for this moment and just want to put my best foot forward. I thought I would have to wait longer and that I would have to play for England Lions - I was fully prepared that it was going to be a seven-year job. When I found out I was qualified more quickly it was obviously a bit of a shock but also exciting.” In the Sussex Premier League Horsham play Roffey at Cricketfield Road again on Saturday and such is the rivalry that last year Archer was allowed by Sussex to play in that fixture – along with other county players, and a wag has tweeted a spoof application to the ECB for Archer to be released for Saturday’s Roffey clash
Horsham players star for Sussex
Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Not content with their superb season for Horsham, earning them promotion to the London 1 South League and a sixth successive Bob Rogers Cup victory, Horsham players are now leading lights in the county side, being instrumental in Sussex’s 47-3 demolition of Essex in the
recent Bill Beaumont County Championship match. There were two tries for Mike Watts and one for Jordan Bell, and five of Sussex’s tries were converted by Sussex Captain, former Horsham skipper Tom Johnson. Horsham’s Mike Tredgett picked up the Man of the Match award, with Jack Osgood and Ryan Maguire also featuring in the Sussex team. While
it will not be easy for Sussex to progress to the final at Twickenham – they need to win by a big score away in Somerset and for Surrey to lose heavily to Essex – having so many Horsham players selected and doing well at county level is further confirmation of the outstanding achievement of Horsham Rugby Club – long may it continue!
