Big Gig hits record numbers Summer finally arrived, bringing out the community in their thousands to celebrate at Horsham Sports Club for this year’s The Big Gig Festival on Saturday (22 June). What a weekend at Horsham Sports Club, as over 4000 festival goers gathered together under the sunny skies to celebrate some top tribute acts at Horsham’s happiest family music festival, The Big Gig! The gates opened at 1pm and the crowd was ready to party from the off, with Brit Pop local lads JOE90 getting everyone into the festival spirit with their seamless covers and expert sound. You’d think that Ed Sheeran had actually arrived in Horsham with second act Kieran, whose sound-a-like vocals and cheeky charm were a huge hit with the whole crowd. This year saw local contemporary choir group, Singergy, surprise the crowds with a fantastic flash mob style performance of 80’s hit ‘You’re the Voice’ followed by three sing-a-long songs on stage, which had people singing in their seats. For many, the Tribute to Wham stole the show, as hundreds of dedicated fans jumped to their feet to reminisce as Steve Mitchell (as George Michael) delivered hit after hit from the infamous duo, including Club Tropicana and Wake Me up Before You Go Go! The crowd was ready for action as evening fell and The Blunter Brothers - back by popular demand – took to the stage. Sensational local favourites The Blunter Brothers, a 10 piece funk, soul and

Motown band, lifted the crowd onto their feet with huge hits from the likes of Stevie Wonder, James Brown & Bruno Mars. It was hard to choose a favourite act of the day, as all performers

were outstanding - but, as the event drew to its highly anticipated finale, and darkness fell, one couldn’t help be drawn in by the undisputable charisma of headline act Rule the World as Take

That! The crowds surged forward and sang along at the top of their voices to mega hits, including Angels, Back for Good, Relight my Fire and Never Forget. “It was amazing. Such a won-

On Monday 17 June – the first day of Children’s Hospice Week 2019, Peter Andre visited Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice to spend time with some of the children and young people cared for by the charity. Peter became a Patron of Chestnut Tree House and Together for Short Lives, the UK charity for seriously ill children, earlier this year. Describing himself as a “proud Patron” of both Chestnut Tree House and Together for Short Lives, Peter threw himself into a

morning of fun and games with the children, including a game of giant outdoor Connect 4 with four year-old Loui. Peter said: “The day was so special. I love visiting and spending time with the children, and it was the perfect way for me to spend the first day of Children’s Hospice Week. I am honoured to be a Patron of both Chestnut Tree House and Together for Short Lives – the work they do is incredible.” From giant outdoor Connect 4 and Kerplunk, to Monopoly

and painting, Peter spent time playing games with the children, but also speaking to parents and members of the hospice care team. Caroline McCullough, Clinical Nurse Manager at Chestnut Tree House, said: “We always love welcoming Peter to the hospice – he’s so great with the children and they all enjoy spending time with him. From the first time he visited, he instantly understood what we’re all about. He shows genuine interest in the work we do and the families we care for, and always makes sure he spends time with everyone. “We are incredibly grateful for Peter’s support as our Patron, and hope that it helps more people to see what wonderful and vital places children’s hospices, like Chestnut Tree House, are.

Peter is passionate about making a difference, and visits like this help create special memories for our children and families – something you can’t put a price on.” Katrina Kelly, Communications Officer at Together for Short Lives, added: “It was an absolute pleasure to meet some inspiring families supported by Chestnut Tree House, with Peter Andre, Patron of Together for Short Lives and Chestnut Tree House. He was an instant hit with the families, getting stuck in with games and taking the time to build important bonds with parents and children alike and learning more about their stories. We are very lucky to have a patron who understands the vital role children’s hospice services play in helping seriously ill children and their families make precious moments together – and even better – helping to create some precious moments of his own this Children’s Hospice Week.” Chestnut Tree House provides care and support to around 300 children with life-shortening conditions and their families across Sussex and South East Hampshire, both at the hospice and in families’ own homes. The cost of providing this service is over £3.9 million per year, yet the hospice receives less than 6% central government funding so relies on the generosity and support of the community to continue providing vital care to local children and families.

Hundreds of cyclists join Davina McCall, Martin Fry and Sally Gunnell in Sussex charity bike ride

Sussex-based children’s charity Action Medical Research has been celebrating following the ninth annual ‘Davina’s Big Sussex Bike Ride’, which took place on Sunday 16 June. TV star Davina McCall – who has supported Action since she was nine-years-old – was joined by more than 500 cyclists including eighties singing sensation Martin

Fry and former Olympian Sally Gunnell OBE. Davina said: “Wow, what a turnout! I’m so pleased to see this event just continue to grow and grow. “It’s an honour to meet and chat with so many people who enjoy getting out on their bikes and helping to raise vital funds for Action. I’m already excited for next year!” Starting and finishing at the East

Sussex National Golf Club near Uckfield, riders were given the choice of three routes (21, 40, 68 miles) which gave them a glimpse of numerous local towns and villages including Golden Cross, Horam, Woods Corner and Battle. Fellow Action supporter, Martin Fry, was delighted to take part: “A few years back, I rode Action’s ‘Castle Ride’ up in Kent, so I knew

it was going to be a fun event. “I think it’s a fantastic charity, passionate about helping to find answers to the causes of so many conditions that affect babies and young children. I’ll always do what I can to show my support.” Sussex resident, Sally Gunnell, thoroughly enjoyed taking part in her first fundraising challenge for Action: “There’s been a reallyfriendly atmosphere here all day and the charity volunteers and staff members have really made it an event to remember. “It’s just fantastic to see so many people come out and do their bit for such a worthy cause.” This year’s event was proudly sponsored by Benenden Hospital who also fielded a team of riders to help show support for the fundraiser. Action’s Community Fundraising Manager for the region, Paula Ray, believes the wet weather couldn’t dampen anyone’s enthusiasm: “I just want to thank all the riders who persevered through the wind and rain to show their support for Davina and Action Medical Research. “It was a fabulous atmosphere - despite the wet conditions – but we honestly couldn’t have done it without our sponsors Benenden Hospital, our small army of dedi-

cated volunteers and event marshalls and of course Davina. “This annual event means a lot to the charity and it’s very rewarding to see so many smiling faces cross the finishing line. We’ll look forward to seeing everyone again in East Sussex next summer!” Funds are still being collected for this year’s event. Since its launch in 2011, ‘Davina’s Big Sussex Bike Ride’ has raised more than £310,000 for Action. Anyone interested in taking part in the 2020 fundraiser can register their interest online: https://action.org.uk/events/cycling/davinaride-100 Action Medical Research is a UKwide children’s charity which funds desperately needed research to tackle the diseases that devastate the lives of so many of our children. It has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952 including helping to introduce the first polio vaccines in the UK, developing the use of ultrasound in pregnancy and testing the rubella vaccine. Action is currently funding research into areas including premature birth, epilepsy, asthma, scarlet fever, cerebral palsy, brain cancer and some rare and distressing conditions.

Major investment in strategic crossroads

More than £1million is being invested in resurfacing the strategically-important Buck Barn crossroads and stretches of the A24 and A272 around it. The road in this area is showing signs of significant weakening. The essential repair work will start on 8 July and take about six weeks, depending on factors such as the weather. Night-time work will be used throughout to try to limit inconvenience for road users as much as possible. A West Sussex Highways spokesperson said: “This is essential

repair work at one of the most strategically important parts of the county’s road network. “The new surfaces will be more durable and more resilient to potholes. They will also be smoother, which will lessen road noise. “This type of work does cause inconvenience for residents and road users, for which we apologise: every effort will be made to limit disruption as much as possible.” Road closures and diversions will be in place from 8pm to 6am while the works are taking place. As well as the crossroad itself,

there will also be resurfacing on: A24 southbound carriageway: Pollards Hill roundabout to Buck Barn crossroads A272 westbound (Cowfold Road): 150m approach to crossroads A272 eastbound (Coneyhurst Road): 200m approach to crossroads A24 northbound: 150m approach to crossroads Traffic signal detector loops at the crossroads will be replaced, and road markings and the anti-skid surface renewed. Businesses at Buck Barn will be able to remain open throughout the works, but with different access arrangements for vehicles at times, which will be highlighted by signage. The bend approaching Bouncer’s Lodge on the A24 Pollards Hill will be resurfaced as part of the main works. It then takes at least a month for the newly-laid material to “weather in” so the anti-skid surface can be laid over it. The anti-skid surface is programmed to be completed in the week beginning 1 September under a daytime lane closure. The contractor for the scheme is Balfour Beatty Living Places. The total cost of the project is approximately £1.1million.

Steyning Rugby Club celebrates raising £1,394 for the British Heart Foundation Players from a local rugby club have raised a phenomenal £1,394 by holding a family fun day to support the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) life saving research. Al Beazley joined the fight to beat heartbreak forever by organising a family fun day at the Steyning Rugby Club, of which he is a member, which included duck races, a guess the weight of the cake, a raffle, and much more, on Saturday 15 June. The event was held because a friend and fellow player tragically died after suffering a cardiac arrest outside the changing rooms, at the end of the last match of the season on 7 April 2018. Johnathan ‘PJ’ Harley was just 27 and suf-

fered from an undiagnosed heart condition, and, after being rushed to Brighton Hospital by ambulance, he later died. Al Beazley, Johnathan’s close friend, said about him: “PJ always stood out within the team for his enthusiasm, warmth and infectious smile. It was a tragedy that hit us all hard”. Al, who organised the event, said: “We are delighted to have raised £1,394, with more to come in, for the BHF’s life saving research. It was an amazing day, so thank you to everyone who made it a success.” Heart and circulatory diseases touch every one of us in some way. From heart attacks to strokes, cardiac arrest to type

2 diabetes; these diseases are responsible for 1 in 4 deaths in the UK every year.  Many people in West Sussex suffer heartbreak from losing loved ones to these diseases and others are living with them every day. With the public’s help, propelled by fantastic events such as Al’s at Steyning Rugby Club, the BHF can fund research that will bring down the shocking statistic that more than 7 million people in the UK are currently living with heart and circulatory diseases and that 25% of the population sadly pass away from them. Al continued: “I would encourage anyone who is thinking of holding a fundraising event for the BHF to go for it! It was a good

excuse to get everyone together, in memory of our friend, whilst raising money for a great cause.” The BHF is calling on more people to organise their own fundraising events to continue its fight against heart and circulatory diseases - from zumbathons and treasure hunts, to bake sales and quizzes, whichever way you choose to fundraise you can help make a difference to millions. To order your free fundraising pack full of ideas, materials and support visit: www.bhf.org.uk/doyourthing. Donna Spriggs-Elliott, Head of Community Fundraising at the BHF, said: “We never cease to be amazed by the extraordinary ways people like Al, and all those at Steyning Rugby Club, fundraise for the BHF and we’re incredibly grateful to them for raising £1,394.

“We urgently need more people to join our fight to beat heartbreak forever and help power our life saving research. Every contribution, big or small, plays a crucial part in every breakthrough we make, so that’s why we’re calling on everyone across the UK to organise their own fundraising event to help support our vital work.” To support Al and Steyning Rugby Club’s fundraising, they have set up a dedicated Gift of Hope page in memory of Jonathan. You can visit it at: giftofhope.bhf.org.uk/In-Memory/ Jonathan-PJ-Harley For inspiration and everything you need to organise a successful event, sign up to get your free fundraising pack by visiting: www.bhf.org.uk/doyourthing

All the fun of the fair at Ingfield School Ingfield Manor School in Billingshurst has hosted another knock-out summer fête. On Sunday 9 June, hordes of families flocked to Ingfield Manor to join the annual fayre and celebration, which has been held in the school’s grounds for more than 40 years. This year’s event was opened by extra-special guest Francesca Martinez, the award-winning comedian who has cerebral palsy, who some might remember from children’s drama Grange Hill. 2019’s fayre, organised by Friends of Ingfield, was jampacked full of exciting attractions and sideshows. It featured a fun fair, the famous miniature train, woodland tours, local choirs performing and much more. Mrs Tracey White, Director of Education at Ingfield Manor, said: “We’re incredibly lucky at Ingfield to have the amazing support of Friends of Ingfield. But we also think it’s important for us to contribute positively to the local community. Holding our annual fête is one way to do that, welcoming families and residents from all around the area.” Greg Hart, from Friends of

Ingfield, added: “The best thing about running the fayre, is bringing all the teams of volunteers together, to raise funds to improve the lives of the children to provide additional equipment they couldn’t otherwise get.” John Godden, CEO of Salutem Healthcare, which runs Ingifeld Manor School, said: “The sun always shines on the Ingfield Manor fayre! “People put in a huge amount of effort to raise money for the pupils here who need a lot of equipment to get through their days. “Thank you to everybody involved. Brilliant effort!” Ingfield Manor School is a specialist day and boarding school for children and young people with neurological impairments and complex medical conditions.

Collyer’s Law Students in top 20 Nationally Three first year Collyer’s law students have enjoyed national success in a competition run by a leading international law firm, in association with The Times national newspaper. Jessica Harrison, Alex Marshall and Maddie Ryan successfully finished in the top 20 of over 700 teams! The competition, run by international law firm Kingsly Napley, set teams of students four tasks to complete, over a period of three months. Collyer’s Head of Law, Janene Weymouth, explained: “The tasks challenged students in areas including: legal research, client care, problem solving and pitching for work. Each of the difficult problems meant the students had to conduct significant levels of research and analysis, requiring enormous dedication and some very late nights indeed!” Over 293 educational establishments nationwide entered the

competition. These included state, private and grammar schools. Of the 700 teams entered, only four teams made it through to the final in London in June. The Collyer’s team finished 13th overall and were delighted to be placed 4th in the country for their “pitching to client” 2 minute video! Janene added: “Although Collyer’s did not get through to the final, they did amazingly well to finish 13th and we are so delighted to celebrate this.” Collyer’s Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, said: “Massive congratulations to Jessica, Alex and Maddie on this astounding success on the national stage! Thanks also to Janene for her superb support. They are all an absolute credit to the Collyer’s community and we are incredibly proud of them!” Picture: (left to right): Jessica Harrision, Janene Weymouth (Head of Law), Alex Marshall, Maddie Ryan

500 Students Walk the Downs It must have been quite a sight for anyone out walking their dog on the Downs between Bramber and Christ’s Hospital on Thursday 13 June, when a team of nearly 500 pupils and staff from Christ’s Hospital School went on a 13 mile sponsored walk in aid of the charity Classrooms for Kenya. The 11 to 14-year-old pupils decided to go on the walk in order to fundraise for and support a team of older pupils from Christ’s Hospital who, in July this year, will be visiting Kenya to build new classrooms for local schools. These schools are unable to fund permanent buildings themselves and Kenyan children are often left to learn in unsafe and unhygienic mud huts. The team of Sixth Form pupils are aiming to build six new classrooms for three different schools. All of the money raised by the younger pupils’ sponsored walk will go towards the construction of these new classrooms; so far, they have raised an impressive £6,980 of their £8,000 target. The pupils set off from Bramber on Thursday morning and walked back to their school in Christ’s Hospital, via the Downs Link, which took an average of four and a half hours. “I am a dog walker and I came across the pupils today whilst out walking the dogs. I was so impressed with their politeness and stamina and when a group of them asked if I would be willing to

sponsor I said I would be delighted. Well done to you all,” read a comment left by a member of the public on the pupils’ fundraising page. “Well done to students and staff from Christ’s Hospital for their efforts on our sponsored walk. They walked a total of 13.1 miles, equivalent to half of a marathon, and our students took to this challenge with enthusiasm and resilience. The fact that they are raising money to benefit education in Kenya is especially fitting, given the charitable nature behind Christ’s Hospital, and we are really pleased to see our students making a difference to the welfare of others. Funding and building these new classrooms will have a hugely beneficial impact on Kitale’s children and young adults” said Will Richards, Teacher of Physics at CH and main organiser of the Kenya trip. The School would like to thank the Cat and Canary in Henfield, Stan’s Bike Shack in Partridge Green and The Orchard in West Grinstead for their support. Classrooms for Kenya was established in 2006 by teachers and students at The Weald School, West Sussex. Since 2006 the charity has built over 70 new classrooms for over 20 different schools in Kenya. Defence minister praises Horsham engineering firm at ‘leading edge of technical innovation’

Last week, a Government defence minister praised Horsham-based engineering firm Chess Dynamics for its work “at the leading edge of technical innovation”, and - as representa-

tive of UK small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) - being described as the “lifeblood of the UK economy”. Representatives from Chess Dynamics and its parent compa-

ny Cohort plc welcomed a visit by the Minister of State for Defence Procurement, Stuart Andrew MP, and local MP Jeremy Quin to its factory in Horsham. The aim of the visit was to provide a first-hand view of what Chess Dynamics does and how its systems are used to support British and global armed forces. Defence procurement minister, the Rt Hon Stuart Andrew MP, said: “SMEs are the lifeblood of the economy and I congratulate Chess Dynamics for being at the leading edge of technical innovation.” During a wide-ranging discussion on the role of SMEs Jeremy Quin MP was extremely pleased to hear how Chess Dynamics was expanding its base in his constituency. He said: “Chess is a company which is actively recruiting local people, offering technical apprenticeships and internships for graduates and school leavers, bringing innovation and building the technical

stevensdrake raises £1,940 for St Catherine’s Hospice during Make a Will Fortnight 2019

Crawley-based law firm, stevensdrake, took part in the annual initiative ‘Make a Will Fortnight’ in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice last month and raised an impressive £1,940. The firm takes part in the scheme each year to raise money for the local charity by writing Wills for a suggested charitable donation. It’s vital to have a valid Will so that once you pass away, your final wishes are honoured. Without a Will, the person who inherits your estate may not be the person you intended to inherit, and your loved ones may miss out. There are many pitfalls and mistakes that can easily be made on a DIY Will that could leave your Will invalid, so it’s important to use a lawyer. The team at stevensdrake were

busy writing Wills and all the money raised from the appointments goes towards helping everyone face death informed, supported and pain-free, as well as providing expert care for

...It’s never too early to write one, you shouldn’t wait until later in life people in West Sussex and East Surrey either at St Catherine’s itself or in a person’s own home. Erica Pearce-Howard, who heads up the Private Client team at stevensdrake, said: “We are

thrilled to have raised £1,940 for this fantastic local charity. The team are proud to join other local firms to take part in this scheme annually and we’re pleased to have raised £900 more than we did last year. “It can be daunting to write your Will and it’s often difficult to bring up money with your loved ones, but we can’t stress enough how important it is to have a Will in place. It’s never too early to write one, you shouldn’t wait until later in life.” If you are considering writing your Will, you can contact Erica Pearce-Howard on 01293 596925 or by emailing erica.pearcehoward@stevensdrake.com or Sue Tipper on 01293 596908 or by emailing sue.tipper@stevensdrake.com.

knowledge base and skills in this part of West Sussex.” Graham Beall, CEO of Chess Dynamics, commented: “It was very encouraging to hear from the minister about the work that is going on within the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to streamline procurement practices and enhance the role that SMEs like ourselves play. We were assured that the MoD and its procurement arm in Abbey Wood is listening to smaller companies, and is making active and positive efforts to engage with them. “I was particularly pleased to learn more about the Innovation and Defence and Security Accelerator funds being made available for companies like Chess Dynamics, which will further enhance or continued growth and boost the economy and skilled engineering roles in our region.” The delegates were given a guided tour of the site and saw examples of technologies, developed by Chess, which are helping

meet the challenges of modern defence and security operations. This included components of Chess’s military counter-drone technology AUDS, developed in partnership with engineering firms Blighter Surveillance and Enterprise Control Systems Ltd. Chess has also developed new capabilities, called AirGuard and AirShield, specifically aimed at protecting commercial airports and critical infrastructure, which were officially unveiled last week. They were also shown a recently developed electro-optical 3D radar surveillance system that will come into service in 2019. Graham Beall added: “I would like to thank Jeremy Quin MP, who has always been a very strong advocate of Chess Dynamics, and Stuart Andrew MP, for taking time out of their busy schedules to visit our site. We look forward to working with them in the future as we continue to grow.”

Horsham Montessori Nursery, in Bennetts Field, Horsham, have won a national competition run by the Montessori St Nicholas training organisation to celebrate how nurseries are using gardening in their Montessori practice. The nursery was delighted to win tickets for two teachers to attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. A special garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show celebrated the work of Maria Montessori, as 2019 marks one hundred years since she first bought her pioneering teaching methods to the UK. The garden design won a gold medal, and emphasised the principles of child-first education. The garden included two greenhouses featuring cuttingedge hydroponic technology, where children could experiment with growing micro vegetables and leaves. The designer, Jody Lidgard, explained: “The design offers an engaging space to nurture children, teach them about the natural world and allow them to explore horticulture in their own way.” The nursery submitted photos showing how they have been exploring growing plants through hydroponic methods by placing bulbs and dogwood cuttings in water. The children kept a careful watch to see if there were any changes to the bulbs or the cut-

The Olive Branch: your venue of choice We meet new owners Dave & Fiona Richards for a chat and try their new ‘Burger Shack’ russ bedford The Olive Branch in Horsham has long been a favourite venue for diners and drinkers but now under the stewardship of new owners Dave & Fiona Richards it looks set to become even more popular. Over 30 years of experience in the trade will certainly help and with a proven record of success behind them, they have set them-

selves a goal of making The Olive Branch your venue of choice. Work began earlier this year on renovating the venue with research going into many different parts of the business that Dave felt needed a change, “We had a good look around at what everyone is doing and in Horsham there are some amazing pubs, nowhere specialising in burgers though so we thought it would be a great idea.” Now he feels ready to share the fruits of his labour and introduce us to, “The Burger Shack “ at The Olive Branch. A dining experience, with a difference as Dave

and his team give you the option to try burgers that you may not find on an everyday pub menu, it won’t just be burgers flying out of the kitchen though as traditional classics like cod & chips, bangers &mash and steak feature as well. We were kindly invited to check out what is on offer and as far as first impressions go, we were impressed. A really polite team member greeting us at the bar then escorted us to a table where we were able to pour over the 14 different burgers on offer! What instantly impressed us was that there seems to have been a great attempt to cover a multi-

tude of food types, with flavours from Spain, Mexico, Japan and the USA among others, it could be possible to spend longer choosing what to eat than actually eating itself. After a starter of some excellent halloumi sticks we settled on our burger choices, one Korean beef served with lettuce and kimchi and a crunchy katsu chicken. Both were colourful and full of flavour, using the Kimchi to help give authentication to the Korean beef was a great touch and certainly enhanced the taste. The crunchy katsu will no doubt be a favourite among customers, each bite giving you a subtle yet fully flavoursome hit of this Japanese classic. If though, you are reading this and feel neither are to your taste, you may want to sink your teeth into a pork belly burger, maybe spiced carrot and chickpea is more your thing or would a beef chilli sloppy joe be what you need? The burger shack certainly has you spoilt for choice with vegetarian options also in plentiful

supply. There is always room for desert and after settling on a brownie with salted caramel sauce and doughnuts complimented with a variety of dipping sauces you definitely wouldn’t be wrong in thinking your eyes are bigger than your belly. It isn’t that the portions are massive, they are all just incredibly filling. Before we left we had a quick chat with Dave who told us, “It’s not just about the burgers, our hotdogs are something else, we sourced the chorizo locally and that particular hotdog is just.... wow, and then there are the shakes, we spent a long time on these and feel we have some incredible milkshakes for everybody.” Its with this that Dave presents us with one of his “hard shakes”, a baileys cookies and cream shake. Its the kind of treat that you don’t want to end. Even if not a fan of Baileys, you’ll be enjoying this for a while

The annual Billingshurst Show happens this Sunday Yes, the wait is over! This Sunday is a real red letter day for the lucky residents of Billingshurst and visitors from further afield – the hugely popular Billingshurst Show and Carnival Procession returns, and at the family fun event there will be more than five hours of entertainment with something for everyone, local businesses and the community coming together at The Recreation Ground in Billingshurst’s Lower Station Road – RH14 9SX. First held in 1987, the Show is jointly organised by Billingshurst & District Rotary Club and the Billingshurst Scout & Guide Group, raising much-needed charity funds. By tradition, the colourful carnival procession, complete with Princess and courtiers, has a special theme – this year: ‘Tell Me a Story’. Fittingly, local children’s author Philip Beicken opens the Show, at 1pm, after the carnival procession departs from the Jengers Mead car park at 12.15. With announcements on the

field confirming timings and events, the flexible programme begins with music from Kieran Blackmore from 11.30 at the Food Court, with, shortly afterwards, the spectacular Battle of Britain Lancaster fly past. The procession is due to arrive at the showground at 12.45, with the winners of the floats announced at 12.55 in the arena. And, there will be a superb Red Arrows fly past shortly after 13.00, followed by a display by the multi award winning Horsham Bluebelles baton twirling team. Then, music from the Petworth Band will precede the dog show, with the artistic Taygan Paxton recreating her own original music, vocalising with acoustic guitar, between 14.00 and 15.00. Also at 14.00, the Knights of the Crusades will be in action, with a castle, podium, flaming torches and pyrotechnics. Horsham’s own musician, Liam Wakefield, will perform between dance displays by VMA and at the maypole, and, after the Knights

have returned, with another of their plays - The Legend of King Arthur - the Scouts and Guides will display at 16,30, ahead of the raffle and winner presentations bringing the show to a close at 17.00. And, as if all that is not enough, there will be stalls aplenty featuring local crafts and community groups, and children’s story readings by Pauline Emsley, author of ‘Rag Doll Lost’ and ‘The Tear Dragon.’ The weather experts are predicting a fine day for Sunday, so come along with all of the family to enjoy one of the district’s very special days out. As soon as this year’s show is over, the organising committee will start putting together another great show for next year, make a diary note of the date: Sunday June 28th, 2020. Meanwhile, information and contact details regarding this year’s event are available at www.billingshurstshow.org. uk – 01403 786350 – 07785 313408 – admin@billingshurstshow.org.uk – and via Facebook

Affordable housing in North Horsham – how can we help?

You are invited to share your views on initial plans for a new retirement village at Wellcross Farm, Horsham. Inspired Villages is preparing a planning application for a Continuing Care Retirement Community, comprising new retirement living homes and on-site facilities including a restaurant/café, spa, swimming pool, and proposed new GP facility. This public consultation will be held:

Saturday Saturday 6th 6th July July || 10am–4pm 10am–4pm

The Canteen at Tanbridge House School, Farthings Hill, Guildford Road, Horsham, RH12 1SR Tel: 0808 301 2893 www.wellcrossfarm.co.uk consultation@wellcrossfarm.co.uk

Unexpectedly passed away at home on Tuesday 11th June, aged 66. Chris was a deeply loved Husband to Marlene; treasured Dad to Barry, Dionne, and Phillip; and beloved Grandad to Roxy and Piper. He will be greatly missed. All welcome to the funeral which will take place on Tuesday 2nd July at 11.20am at Worthing Crematorium. Family flowers only. Donations, if desired, to Mary How Trust and Horsham Community First Responders gratefully received via freemanbrothers.co.uk/remember

The Parish Council is acutely aware of the lack of realistic, affordable housing in North Horsham and over the last few months a group of parish councillors and residents have been investigating how affordable housing could be provided through the formation of a Community Land Trust. A Community Land Trust is a legal entity in its own right and it makes its own decisions. Its’ board is usually populated by local people and it can hold an asset locked for community use in perpetuity. A Community Land Trust can buy or acquire land to build affordable houses, or convert an existing building to provide affordable accommodation at rents which are realistically affordable to its community. Please let us know if you are interested in helping to form a Community Land Trust for North Horsham. There is more information about Community Land Trusts on the Parish Council website, or you can contact the Clerk. Responses to this request will be considered by the Parish Council and only if there is sufficient support will it move forward. Residents are invited to take a photograph in North Horsham parish on 6th July 2019, to build a historical, photographic record of the parish in 2019 as part of the North Horsham Now and Then project. More details can be found on the Parish Council website. When you have taken your photograph, please submit it to North Horsham Parish Council with a note of where it has been taken. By submitting the photograph, you are agreeing for the photograph to be published on the website. North Horsham is fortunate to have many grass verges which make the parish an attractive place to live. Please be considerate and don’t park on the verges as it soon erodes the grass and makes them unsightly. West Sussex County Council no longer has the resource to repair anything other than serious verge damage so in this case, prevention is much better than cure. Finally, the Parish Council would like to say thank you to Martin Loates and Francis Haigh who stepped down at the May election for their service to the community through the Parish Council. Vacancies for co-opted members still remain. More information about North Horsham Parish Council can be found on the Parish Council website www.northhorsham-pc.gov.uk, or contact the Parish Council through the Clerk on 01403 750786, e-mail parish.clerk@northhorsham-pc.gov.uk.

Southwater Royals revel in fun-filled presentation day

Community Football Martin Read - Sports Reporterr Southwater Royals Football Club was founded in 1997, developing into an FA Chartered Standard Club – one of the first clubs in the area to be so accredited, with the accolade only awarded to clubs committed to promoting excellent qualified coaching in a safe, rewarding environment. The Club is now firmly established as a well-respected community organisation and each year celebrates with a special family fun presentation day, just held again at Southwater Leisure Centre. The Club prides itself on promoting good football, while building team spirit and a sense of fair play in all players and stimulating and fostering social aspects

for players and families alike, the annual Presentation Day placing the emphasis on fun for all the family. As before, this year’s Presentation Day featured activities for all of the children playing for the Club, with in-house tournaments involving a teams with a combination of players from different age groups and abilities, enabling all participants to have a full day of football. Bouncy castles and stalls completed the busy scene, which was, this year, recorded in a photo shoot from Club Legends for all of the players, managers and officials, accompanied by Councillor Billy Greening who presented the medals. As an example of the success of the Club, soon after launching the Southwater Royals Under 12 Girls’ Section, the new team

got off to a flying start with big win in their first ever match in the Sussex Women & Girls’ U12 League. They beat Lindfield 12-0, with Captain Siobhan Bridgewater leading from the front with five goals, Grace Bates adding three and Maddie Wilders, Maisie Ayling, Charlotte Doyle and Mia Scott also scoring, boosted by great support from the touchline. Southwater Royals Chairman Andy New told us: “Football is the biggest female team sport in England and its growing, and at the Royals we believe that there is massive growth potential in girls’ football, so we started the new team and it was wonderful to see their opening game played in such terrific spirit and with extremely high quality performances.” All Southwater Royals’ Managers and

Assistant Managers are encouraged and supported in pursuing further coaching qualifications, and are trained in emergency first aid procedures and required to retain and develop their knowledge of the game through membership of the Sussex County FA Coaches Association. Speaking of the Fun Presentation Day, Andy New summed up saying: “Our 7 hour fun festival of football really is the highlight of our year. We bring together the local community and this year we had an amazing turn out - over 200 families attended ! Each age group for boys and girls, had their own team presentations for players of the season and participation awards and to see and feel the community spirit and joy on

their faces was fantastic. Our club continues to grow and this year we’ve had over 50 girls playing and enjoying our big day - this togetherness is what this football club represents. We are doubling the size of our girls section next season and are looking for girls wishing to get involved in football from school years 3-8. And, we also look forward to welcoming new players across all boys’ age groups, too. We are a goahead thriving Club and are always on the lookout for sponsors and helpers to join our committee, so I should be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to join our football family - andy. new@sky.com.” More details can be found on the Club website www.southwaterroyals.uk

News of Horsham and Roffey’s junior sides – drama at Storrington Saturday June 22 – Feeder team roundup Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporterr

At Cricketfield Road Horsham seconds inserted Three Bridges and to the backdrop and sounds of the spectacular music festival, the visitors scored 232-6 from their 45 overs, wicketkeeper Hugo Cowan making 51 not out, together with 46 from opener Sachit Patel. Sam Bushby was Horsham’s most successful bowler with 3-33, the other wickets being shared between Darren Jordan and Andrew Williams. For Horsham Jordan made the biggest score of the match – 54 - extras at 41 being the next highest contributor. Opener Manav Parekh scored 37 and Williams 21, but no other batsman made more than six, Horsham being bowled out for 185 in 42.2 overs to lose by 47 runs. To add to their problems, Horsham were docked two points for failing to enter the result by 10am on Sunday morning and are bottom, trailing their Worthing counterparts by 15 points. Horsham 3rd XI were due to travel to Selsey, but after being unable to raise a team they are now at the foot of the table, 26 points adrift from Henfield 2nd XI. Roffey seconds were at Steyning’s Memorial Playing Fields, where they put the hosts in to bat. Steyning posted 245-5 from their 45 overs, openers Christopher Barnett (90) and Isaac Tidley (44) putting on 121 for the first wicket, before Roffey contained the situation with a wicket apiece from Josh Kennedy, Fred Bridges, Lewis Shivnarain and Ollie Rivers (who also ran out Steyning skipper Oliver Collins). Chasing, Roffey wicketkeeper Sanchit Batra got them off to a good start with 63, Ollie Rivers following up with 31, but the innings of the day came from skipper Mark Pavlovic, whose 94 at little more than a run a ball contained 10 fours and 2 sixes. Barnett took three late wickets, but Roffey squeezed

over the line with three balls to spare. Roffey are second in Division 3 (West), two points behind West Chiltington. In a low scoring game at Faygate, fourth-placed Roffey 3rd XI beat Horsham Trinity seconds comfortably. For Roffey, skipper Ed Barnes top-scored with 39 and opener Nikki Choudhiri made 30, extras adding the same, Ben Ford’s 4-24 restricting them to 142-8 from 40 overs. In reply, Trinity were soon in trouble, the first five batsmen only amassing 31 between them. Two subsequent players got to double figures, but wickets continued to fall, Jake Humphreys taking 4-8 in five overs after Jim Barnes and Max Furber had taken two each and both Ben Gibbs and Louie Dunford one, Roffey winning by 62 runs in double quick time. But, the most exciting game in the land was at Storrington where Roffey fourths were pitted against Barns Green 3rd XI. Bizarre events have stopped play at cricket matches – swarms of bees, cows on the pitch, snow – but the match was held up by a young woman running from her axe-wielding boyfriend. After police intervention the miscreant was escorted elsewhere and the game continued, despite, with Roffey being in a parlous position, skipper Andy Chantrill quipping to the District Post: “We were badly shaken up, so I thought the game should be abandoned with points shared!” But, the plea failed to register and Roffey’s innings ended with them 68 all out, losing by 87 runs. Earlier Barns Green made 155-9, opener Robert Southgate scoring 31, with Joseph Bensusan taking 4-32, Mark Murphy 2-18, Samuel Chantrill 2-21 and Sam Judson 1-37. Then, although Alan Parker scored 25, only Jonathan Moss reached double figures as Tim Hennock, Callum Barrett, Thomas Drabble and Matt Barrett each took two wickets. Roffey 4ths are sixth, well clear of the bottom two clubs – Warnham seconds and Horsham Trinity fourths.

Horsham suffer last gasp defeat against 2017 Champions East Grinstead Saturday June 22 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division East Grinstead 223 all out (55.3 overs) Horsham 163 all out (54) - East Grinstead won by 60 runs East Grinstead 28 points Horsham 12 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporterr At Saint Hill, Horsham restricted East Grinstead to 223 last Saturday, but could not quite hold out for a draw, Horsham’s last wicket falling on the final available ball of the game. Grinstead won the toss and elected to take first strike, a brave decision after their batting nightmare the previous Saturday. And, Will Adkin was out LBW to Tom Haines from the third ball of the match, but the next six batsmen all started well - promoted up the order and not bowling – Ian Sturmer made 54 and Benjamin Davies 38, with four team-mates getting twenties, but Nick Oxley kept

plugging away, to finish with 6-75. After an injury induced lay off, Sussex’s George Garton returned to bowling with an impressive, but wicketless work out, James Brehaut, Jonny Whiting and PJ Williams each dismissing a batsman. When Horsham responded, the Hatchett brothers accounted for openers Haines and Craig Gallagher, but at 59-2 and with good batting returns in recent weeks, Horsham were still reasonably well-placed. Skipper Michael Thornely top-scored with 56 and Oxley made 34 from 67 balls, but the wicket, was very dry, with the ball turning sideways, and once Thornely and Oxley had gone, Bradley Hatchett (4-47 from 21 frugal overs) and George Cave, with 3-24 took full advantage, Horsham slipping from 152-6 to 163 all out at the very death, leaving them in the penultimate berth, 22 points above Mayfield, but 12 behind fellow strugglers, Eastbourne. This Saturday Horsham return home to Cricketfield Road to take on Brighton & Hove, who, after going top when East Grinstead

collapsed against them on June 15th, consolidated their lead last weekend with a home win against Cuckfield Meanwhile, as more than half-expected, Rye pulled out of Horsham’s home Sussex T20 Cup tie last Sunday (after getting the opportunity because Premier league club Mayfield and then Seaford had donated walkovers by conceding). 45 teams across Sussex, West and East, entered the competition, but, with so many concessions, it seems that the players are not as keen as the committees that enter them. After a bye in Round 1 and having played just one game (when they thrashed Felbridge & Sunnyside) Horsham are now through to the Quarter Final on Sunday July 14, when they are due to welcome Cuckfield, starting at noon – to be confirmed. The Final, a place at which was always much-coveted, will be at Sussex’s Hove HQ on Sunday September 8th. Horsham have won the Sussex Cup a record 13 times, lastly in 2016

Roffey in Cup Quarter Final Sussex T20 Cup Rounds 2 and 3 – Sunday June 23 Round 2 – Roffey 123-7 (20 0vers) – Slinfold 55 all out (13.2 overs) Roffey won by 67 runs Round 3 – Roffey 231-2 (20 ove rs) Chichester Priory Park 106 all out (14 overs) – Roffey won by 125 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporterr After a bye in Round 1, Roffey came to Slinfold’s pleasant ground last Sunday on the back of three disappointing league outcomes. Slinfold are currently second in Division 4 with six wins from eight starts. Five years ago they gave Horsham a real scare in the Sussex Cup, and although Roffey won very convincingly in the end, at 32-0 after four overs, it looked as though Slinfold were in strong contention for an upset. They had inserted Roffey and opener Ben Manenti cover drove his second ball for four, but was soon out – for his fourth recent low score. Nothing, though, was more certain than an opponent would soon suffer – read on. Meanwhile, Rohit Jagota, skipper Matt Davies and former captain, and now Chairman, Josh Fleming - rotating the strike - all scored twenties, but wickets fell regularly, Mubbasar Hussain taking 2-13 and Slinfold skipper Steve Haines 2-21, with astute field placing never allowing Roffey to break free. But, in the innings break Roffey thought that 130 would have been a good score on a

slow, low wicket, with some long boundaries, last week’s rain having slowed the outfield. Slinfold began promisingly, with ten off the first over, but only Haines reached double figures as left arm spinner Luke Barnard snared four of the first five batsmen for one run off two overs. Theo Rivers on his first bowl of the season stepped up with 3-15, before Manenti wrapped up the game with 3-6 from 14 balls. In excess of 440 runs had been scored in a previous T20 match on the Slinfold wicket and Steve Haines told the District Post: “We felt that 180 was around par and thought that we’d done well to keep Roffey down to 123 - and we were pleased with our start, but Roffey bowled brilliantly!” Former Premier League side Chichester came to play the winners in Round 3 and were immediately put under the cosh after Roffey won the toss and elected to bat. They were unfortunate to come up against Ben Manenti in, even by his brutal standards, unbelievably menacing Morganesque mode. In 69 balls, Manenti hit 12 fours and, taking the outfield and boundaries out of play, 15 sixes, targeting the area towards the church after over-flying the pavilion. Pink balls were lost, necessitating the innings to end with a red one. Rohit Jagota made 20 and, match wicketkeeper Max Rivers, Roffey’s third keeper of the weekend, posted an unbeaten 35, but Manenti had scored 164 out of 225 when he was finally out, the Chichester bowling figures best left unrepeated. Clearly, to have any chance of winning, Chichester needed a

solid start, but, although experienced opener Abhishek Raut, an IPL player with Rajasthan Royals, made 37, at 8-2 they had more than a mountain to climb. They did recover to 67 before losing another wicket, but, with the run rate escalating, the introduction of speedy Alex Collins showed that the wicket was not just made for spinners. In only 18 balls he stood the game on its head with 6-23, bowling fast and generally straight, he clean bowled three victims and did for others with some interesting deliveries latched onto by safe-handed fielders, telling the District Post: “My variety got me the wickets!” While, Ben Manenti, matter of fact as ever, when asked how he had managed to be so destructive when, on the same strip in the first game, the wicket had appeared challenging, told us: “There was more pace on the ball, so it was easier to get away.” Roffey skipper Matt Davies summed up with: “Ben’s wonderful innings set us up and then we bowled and fielded well. We dismissed both opponents inside 20 overs today and nobody can argue with that!” In the Quarter Finals Roffey have a home tie with Haywards Heath – details to be confirmed. Roffey won the Sussex Cup for the first time in 2017, and narrowly lost to East Grinstead with the scores level in controversial circumstances in last year’s Final, denying them the opportunity to compete again against other county cup winners in the National T20 competition. They are eager to put that right this season.

Premier League round up Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporterr After assuming the lead following Roffey’s two abandonments, Brighton & Hove widened the gap at the top of the table with a strong home 30 point win against Cuckfield. Electing to bat first, Brighton declared on 283-6, a big score at the Nevill ground, giving themselves four extra overs to bowl the visitors out. The top four batsmen delivered – the openers, Sussex’s Delray Rawlins and Bryce Hounscombe each scored thirties, paving the way for Hugo Gillespie (76) and Matt

Machan with 93, despite Joe White’s three wickets. Replying, Cuckfield were soon reduced to 4-2 thanks to Matthew Wood and although they eventually got to 198 because of a rapid 89 from Joe Cambridge and an unbeaten 39 from skipper Josh Hayward – coming in at 10 - seven batsmen failed to reach double figures as 60-5 became 101-8. Stephen Marsh took 4-86, Brighton winning with 13 overs to spare. At their Welbrook ground, bottom of the table Mayfield’s woes continued with a heavy defeat at the hands of third-placed Preston Nomads, who, after being put in, declared on 242-9, leaving Mayfield 53 overs to

get the runs. Former Roffey player Usman Khan top-scored for Nomads with 62 off 47 balls with good support from Captain Daniel Phillips (58) and thirties from wicketkeeper Jake Hutson and Navin Patel, Robert Sharma taking 3-22. Mayfield posted a promising 41-1, but then suffered a mid and late innings crisis – 50-5 becoming 93-8. Skipper Matt Cooke made 36 but Nomads won by 127 runs, Patel taking 5-67 and Will Collard 4-22, Nomads

only employing three bowlers as Mayfield subsided less than half way through their allocation. At Three Bridges the hosts put East-

bourne in and only Jamie Goddard bettered 30. Wickets tumbled, opener Conor Golding taking 6-41 as the seasiders staggered to 133 all out from 57.1 overs. Responding, Bridges were not well-placed at 22-4, but an unbeaten 54 from keeper Joe Walker, 36 from Adam Jones and 22 not out from Tom Blandford saw them home with six overs unused, opening bowler Ben Twine taking all five wickets, for 33, his 18 overs including eight maidens. Eastbourne mounted a strong challenge for the title last season, but now find themselves third from bottom.

Dropped catch condemns Roffey to a draw Saturday June 22 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Middleton 262-8 (58 overs) – Roffey 227-9 (52) Match drawn – Roffey 13 points – Middleton 14 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporterr After two consecutive abandonments Roffey needed a win to reboot their push to retain the title, but they could only escape with nail-biting draw last Saturday. Having been 31 points clear at the top of the table three games ago, after the two rain offs and the draw, they now trail new leaders Brighton & Hove by 21 points after Brighton beat Cuckfield. Mid table Middleton are heavily reliant on the all round skills of skipper Sean

Heather and the prolific batting of Mahesh Rawat, the pair dominating Middleton performances week after week. And, it was Rawat who almost undid Roffey with a superb 151 not out and two cheap wickets – he has also kept wicket in recent games. Rawat, Heather and extras accounted for 192 of Middleton’s runs, the rest of the team making 70 between them. Rawat, a perpetual thorn in the flesh of Premier League bowlers, has taken a real liking to RH12 – he scored an unbeaten century at Roffey last year and another at Horsham this season. With 113 first class matches under his belt, and even more one day/T20 games, Rawat played for Pune Warriors in the IPL and was the leading run scorer in the 2017 Surrey Championship with 880 runs for Ashstead. So far this season he has three hundreds and three fifties, scoring almost a third

of Middleton’s team aggregate. He is difficult to get out, but Roffey shot themselves in the foot by dropping him off a routine chance on 17, costing them the game. After electing to bat, Middleton were 40-3, but by the time Heather was dismissed for 35, Rawat was already on 41, finishing after facing 136 balls with 18 fours and 5 sixes, reducing Roffey to have nine fielders around the boundary. For Roffey Luke Barnard was the pick of the bowlers with 3-38 from 13 overs, James Pearce took 2-38 and Leigh Harrison, George Fleming and Rohit Jagota one apiece, Ben Manenti – victim of the crucial shelled opportunity – toiling for 17 fruitless overs. At Roffey’s fast scoring ground the 263 run target was gettable – if they got off to a good start, but they were set back when opener Manenti departed first ball. They recovered

from 19-2, and were keeping up with the asking rate, but once they had passed 200 with fifties from Matt Davies and Chris Webb and 48 from Jagota, encouraging high hopes, four wickets went down for four runs, including a needless run out, leaving them teetering with the prospect of their first home loss in the league in more than three years. Pearce and, on a rare appearance at the crease, Barnard played out the last overs for a jittery draw, but it almost felt like a defeat after the missed opportunity, the only consolation being another excellent Roffey tea. Another busy weekend beckons for Roffey - on Saturday they are back on the road with a visit to fifth – placed, but strong on paper Cuckfield, then on Sunday they have a home tie against Three Bridges – in Round 3 (the Regional Final) of the National Cup

Billingshurst slip to third against Haywards Heath Saturday June 22 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Haywards Heath 174-6 (53 overs) Billingshurst 117 all out (42.5 overs) Haywards Heath won by 57 runs Haywards Heath 30 points Billingshurst 2 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporterr Mid-table Haywards Heath were a targeted home win for Billingshurst, top coming into the game, but a frail batting display caused Billingshurst to slide to third, albeit just five points behind new leaders Bognor Regis, and two adrift from Hassocks-based St James’s Montefiore. After being put in, Heath started well – with a 53 run opening stand, Ben Williams, though, was bowling well again, taking the first four wickets, and five of the six that fell – his 5-65 coming from 18 accurate overs. Seven out of the eight Haywards Heath batsmen getting to the crease got good starts, although only Ollie Bailey reached 40. Needing around three and a half an over, Billingshurst set off on the wrong foot, Benjamin van Rensburg snaring Jordan Willoughby and Stuart Barber for ducks in three balls. Billingshurst recovered to 48-2, only to slip to 61-5, from which there was to be no salvation, Bailey being tormenter in chief with 7-28, and opener van Rensburg finishing with 3-31 after both Louis Storey and Scott Stratton had made 25. On Saturday, seeking a return to winning ways, Billingshurst visit sixth-placed placed Burgess Hill.

Meanwhile, Ifield – in the Premier League last season – are second from bottom, 18 points above beleaguered Goring by Sea.

Horsham finally come home with Hop Oast handover !

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Alleluia! Horsham Football Club’s long, long wait for a home of their own is finally over, terminating their seemingly unending groundsharing existence since leaving

the old Queen Street ground more than ten years ago. The Club has a long proud history, stretching right back to 1871, but, taking ownership of their own brand spanking new swish Hop Oast stadium is without doubt one of the Hornets’ very biggest

days – on or off the field. The official handover ceremony took place in front of the stunning new clubhouse, with Horsham CEO John Lines receiving the keys from Stuart Burne, Director of Reside Construction, John saying: “Today is a momentous occasion for Hor-

sham FC and I am so very proud to be a small part of bringing the club back home to the town, finally ending the eleven year nomadic existence for the town’s most senior club. Our players deserve this, our Management deserve this but more than anything else our loyal supporters deserve this. Thank you for sticking with us, we knew it would come eventually and we are on the edge of whole new exiting era for our Club. Thank you.” After the tortuous process of searching for a suitable new location, with several major setbacks along the way, Horsham District Council ultimately gave their backing for Hop Oast more than two years ago, since when intensive work has ensued. But, especially, and appropriately, coinciding with the Hornets’ promotion, the end result is certain to be the envy of many even bigger clubs, rewarding the patience of the entire dedicated team involved . Further work at Hop Oast remains to be done, and a working party will be at the ground getting things ready for the new season, with excitement building with the senior team beginning training sessions at Hop Oast. Then, there will be what the Club describes as ‘test’ matches against Hartley Wintney on July 13th and Haywards Heath Town on the 16th before the official opening against the Red Devils - Crawley Town - on Saturday July 20th, with the new season starting on August 10th. The Club will be announcing details of these matches shortly – probably all-ticket occasions, with limited, but increasing, capacity for each fixture. And the Club say that they will be introducing a membership scheme for the clubhouse, details of which, together with opening times, being revealed as soon as possible. Ad-

ditional friendly fixtures have also been arranged, with trips to Steyning Town’s Shooting Field ground on July 9th, followed by visits to Eastbourne Town (23rd), Wimborne (27th), East Grinstead (30th) and Burgess Hill on August 3rd. Meanwhile, Horsham FC has boosted its off field team with the appointment of long-term supporter, Matt Jones, as Press & Social Media Officer, Matt saying: “I am beyond proud to be co-ordinating a brand

...I am so very proud to be a small part of bringing the club back home to the town new media team for the upcoming season. My aim is to make the connection between the club and its loyal fans as close and authentic as possible, through our media channels - I’m here to ensure we produce only the very best content. Horsham FC forever!” Player news – Joey Taylor, who memorably sent over the pinpoint cross for Dylan Merchant’s crucial goal in the promotion play-off final - is moving on, Hornets’ Manager Dom di Paola saying: “He needs to be playing regular football and I can’t guarantee him that - he’s been great for us, I’m sorry to see him go and wish him all the best.”

News from Horsham YMCA Football Club Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last season was a good one for Horsham YMCA at senior and junior level – in the Southern Combination Premier Division the first team was in contention for promotion for much of the campaign, only to finish as runner up to Chichester City. So, in the forthcoming season efforts will be re-doubled with training soon getting under way. Meanwhile, the Club has announced more pre-season friendlies in July – a YM XI will play Roffey at their Bartholomew Way ground on Saturday 13th (2pm), with three subsequent matches for the first team – on Saturday 20th versus Billing-

shurst at their Jubilee Fields home (2pm), then on the following Tuesday (23rd) at Gorings Mead, starting at 7.30 against Chichester City, before Staines Town are entertained, again at Gorings Mead, on Saturday 27th, kicking off at 3pm. In April the Under 23 side won the SCFL U23 (West) Division, triumphing in 15 of their 20 games, losing just twice and becoming an impressive conveyor belt with several of their players making regular appearances in Horsham YMCA’s senior side. And, for this coming season YM will be concentrating on the development of the U23 team and the possibility of extending opportunities for any future U18 and Women’s sides, so, for that reason the Club regret that no Reserve

team will be fielded for the 2019-20 season. Details of the U23 friendlies can be found on the Club website – www.horshamymcafc.co.uk With the Club’s playing strength currently under active review and transfers and acquisitions negotiated throughout the closed season, new signings are on the way, pending notification of which, Bostik League South East Division side Burgess Hill has announced that YM centre half Callum Donaghey will be playing for them next season. Donaghey came to YM almost two years ago after spells with Crawley Down Gatwick, Greenwich Borough, Lewes, Shoreham and Three Bridges, Hillians boss Simon Wormull saying that he managed Donaghey at both Lewes

and Three Bridges and is looking forward to working with the experienced defender again. It is also understood that Dean Bown will be leaving YM, possibly for Lewes. Meanwhile, not content with just the on field entertainment – and by way of something different – YM are pleased to advise that, in support of Horsham’s Year of Culture, they are planning to stage Patrick Marber’s play Red Lion, which received a 4 star rating from the Guardian. The play has been performed with a West End possibility in mind, the synopsis reading: ‘The action is set in the dressing room of a small-town soccer club aspiring promotion. Marber focuses on just three characters – Yates the veteran kit man,

a local legend who has given his life and soul to the club, Kidd, the restless, ambitious manager with a collapsing marriage prepared to cut any deal to rescue himself from debt, and Jordan, a young player with a troubled background, a dodgy knee and palpable flair. What follows is a heated battle over Jordan that exposes the flaws, both in Yates’s club-first mentality and Kidd’s conniving crookedness.’ (All characters and events depicted are entirely fictitious. Any similarity to actual events or persons, living or dead, is purely coincidental!) – see https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=JTNM947D8gI. Tickets will be available from the Capitol Theatre box office with prices and dates yet to be confirmed.
