Billingshurst Show best in years Last Sunday the Show organisers were rewarded with a richlydeserved beautiful day and the lucky residents of Billingshurst and visitors from much further afield thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular event staged at The Recreation Ground in Billingshurst’s Lower Station Road. After music from Kieran Blackmore at the Food Court – and the iconic Battle of Britain Lancaster fly past - the hugely popular five hour Show was launched with the traditional Carnival Procession – complete with Princess and courtiers – setting off from Jengers Mead, this year’s theme being “Tell me a Story”. The Show, jointly organised by Billingshurst & District Rotary Club and the Billingshurst Scout & Guide Group, raising much-needed charity funds, was opened by local children’s author Philip Beicken. The Show was first held in 1987, but by common consent, this year’s family fun spectacular, bringing local businesses and the community together, was even better than ever. There was

a superb Red Arrows fly past, a display by the multi award winning Horsham Bluebelles baton twirling team, music from the Petworth Band, a dog show, more music – from the artistic Taygan Paxton, and Horsham’s own Liam Wakefield and, the ever popular Knights of the Crusades performing two plays, with flaming torches and pyrotechnics, against the backdrop of their castle and podium. Add in dance sessions by VMA and at the maypole, a display by the Scouts and Guides, a big raffle, winner presentations and stalls aplenty featuring local crafts and community groups, and children’s story readings by Pauline Emsley, author of ‘Rag Doll Lost’ and ‘The Tear Dragon’ and the result was a breathtaking, very special day out, crammed with fun for the whole family, as confirmed by the many complimentary messages on social media – including: “A delightful Show – we had a wonderful time!” – “It was brilliant!” – “The best Show in years – thank you to all the people who worked so hard to give our village a day to remember – top drawer!” – “Wow! What a fantastic afternoon!” - “The flypasts were amazing – the organisers did a great job. What an event for our village – well done

‘Funday Sunday is this SUNDAY!! Horsham’s hugely successful annual Family Event returns to Horsham Park on this Sunday 7 July. This year, the event will include the finale of the fantastic Horsham Children’s Parade, and the incredible ‘Titan the Robot’ Show... plus the usual plethora of traders, charities, community organisations, sports have-a-go areas, Bensons Giant Funfair, Street Food Stalls, and a stage and display arena compered by TV’s Dave Benson Phillips and packed with local talent, including Tomfoolery, Ollie Heath, Amber Titchenor and Discounted, choirs, musicians, drama and dance groups, and last year’s stars - the amazing ‘Horsham Acro’ Gymnastic display. The organisers, Horsham Rotary Club, said they are delighted to have a number of top local companies sponsoring this year’s event, including Bluecoat Sports, Gatwick Kia, Gatwick Mitsubishi, Mansell McTaggart, NFU Mutual Insurance, Henfield Hire and, of course, Horsham District Council - we thank them all for their wonderful support. Titan the Robot (courtesy of Horsham District Council’s Year of Culture) will be a sure fire hit with kids and adults alike - even though he might prove somewhat frightening to the very young. The 8ft, 160kg walking robot will delight and amaze children with his antics and sheer size. Over 750 of Horsham’s primary school children are taking part in The Children’s Parade, displaying a joyous celebration of creativ-

ity. This spectacle of imaginative models and costumes, upbeat music and dance, will parade through Horsham’s town centre and park – uniting schools, children, families and the wider community through a magical and fun shared experience. The parade will depart from the Denne Road Car Park at 11.30 arriving in Horsham Park just after noon where you can learn about the children’s creative journey and get involved in some fun art activities yourself! Bezerkaz Circus will be back thrilling everyone with their circus skills, activities and performances and encouraging all kids to get involved. Benson’s traditional Funfair will be at Funday Sunday once again, with a wide variety of equipment from the traditional Waltzers to the modern day thrill machines like their ‘Extreme’, which is a highadrenaline attraction for thrill seekers. By way of comparison, we also hope to have some older steam driven machines in the park! Other attractions at this year’s event include The Ghostbusters, Guiles Reptiles, Kapow’s Wrestling Shows, and The Rotary Coconut Shy. We have a variety of activities in the Children’s Zone to keep little ones occupied, including Bounce Mania, soft play, Music Bus and Busy Days Face Painting. There are a wide variety of local traders and service providers selling home produced products, beauty, clothing, accessories and gifts, as well as health and wellbeing advice and prod-

ucts. Why not come and sit in the sun and enjoy the entertainment while taking advantage of the street food from local producers, including ethically produced sausages and burgers, crepes, pizzas, pasta dishes, Thai food, cakes, sweets and waffles? Grab a drink from Hepworth’s Beer Bar; our Wine Pimms and Prosecco Bar; Polygon Cocktail Bar; or a speciality coffee or tea. Local sports clubs will be present in the Have-a-go Sports Zone, where everyone can try out an array of activities from basketball to tai-chi. Clubs represented include Horsham Sparrows Football, Atlantis Swimming Club, Bluecoats Sports, Horsham Karate and Tai-Chi, Horsham ShaolinKung Fu, Nuthurst Cricket Club, Horsham Table Tennis Club, Horsham Junior Bowling Club (10 Pin), Horsham Hawks Basketball, My Golf Academy, and Slinfold Golf. What else could possibly be added to such a busy event? Well, the Police, Fire Brigade, First responders and Neighbourhood Watch will all be in our 999 Zone. Many local charities will be raising funds and awareness for the work they do, including Age UK, Chestnut Tree Hospice, St. Catherine’s Hospice, Hope, Neil’s Club, Jane’s Wish, Lifeboats, Animals Asia, Manor Green School, QEII School, Olive Tree Cancer Support, The Rotary Club of Horsham, Inner Wheel Horsham, The Positive Page, Springboard and the Samaritans.

Pupil inspires crisp loving classmates

Keen to help tackle the challenge of recycling the non-recyclable, a six year-old pupil at Heron Way has spearheaded the introduction of crisp packet recycling across the school. And the response has been phenomenal!

Embracing her role as Eco Council rep for year 1 pupils, Wren Crocker researched with her grandpa what happens to rubbish that can’t be recycled. They stumbled across Terracycle, who were in talks with Walkers Crisps to

set up a system to recycle the vast number of crisp packets taken to landfill sites. Wren took the idea to the Eco Council, where they discussed what benefits such a system could bring to the school, then contacted Terracycle to find out more. The result - a shiny purple wheelie bin now has pride of place outside the school hall, and Heron Way is one of the first schools in the area to embrace this type of recycling. “Finding the bin was really fun”, said Wren, “And I have enjoyed designing posters to tell my classmates all about it.” Mrs Doyle, who runs the Eco Council, has been impressed with the response from pupils across the school: “We seem to have gone into overdrive with litter patrols! Children are bringing empty crisp packets in from home too, so the bin is full on a weekly basis. We are thrilled it’s turned into such a collaborative effort at home and at school to embrace recycling”. Heron Way’s Eco Council has also been involved in a worm census, where the children dug for worms and submitted counts as part of a nationwide global warming survey. They also hold meetings and assemblies across the school to talk about the environment, our impact on it and how we can make a difference.

Prom time at Tanbridge House School On a wonderful warm evening, Tanbridge House School held their annual Year 11 Prom to celebrate the end of the students’ journey at school. The Prom took place at the Crowne Plaza Felbridge – Gatwick. After arriving in various forms of transport, including a horse and carriage, sports cars and a selection of vintage vehicles, the students kicked off the night with a Mocktail and music provided by student band Discounted. Following that was dinner and dancing. It was a relaxed evening with a lot

of laughter and a true celebration of their time at Tanbridge. Student hosts, Jack Lunniss and Jojo Elliott, presented the awards for Prom King and Prom Queen to Ed Morley and Pippa Softley. Kristian Hunt, Leader of Year, said of the evening: “The Prom was a fantastic evening celebrating the end of school for a fantastic year group. It is great to see how they have all developed over the years and I look forward to seeing how they progress beyond THS.”

Bluecoat Sports Resubmit Planning Application for Expansion Project Horsham based, Bluecoat Sports Health & Fitness Club, are delighted to announce that they have resubmitted their planning application for exciting new indoor and outdoor fitness facilities. This follows their public consultation in May, where they asked members of the public for feedback on their revised plans. See the application The application went live on the Horsham District Council Planning Portal on Thursday, 6 June and is available for all members of the public to view. The application includes information about the proposed expansion, important dates and comments from members of the public. To see the application itself, users will need to visit the Horsham District Council Planning website and search for the reference number DC/19/1149. Changes to the application The team behind the project have made several changes to the plans over the last few months following concerns from the public about lighting, noise and traffic. These changes include: Reducing the height of floodlights to keep lighting impact on the surrounding area to a minimum Changing of the light bulbs to programmable LED light fittings to ensure the lighting is easily controllable and focussed, reducing the light spillage across the area Relocating and reducing the levels of the athletics track and adventure trails to move the development away from nearby roads and homes Implementing a strict schedule for the number, size and duration of events, so as to reduce noise and traffic Proposing further highway works to improve safety and the road

network leading to the proposed development Submitting an application to reduce the speed limit around the site from national to 30mph Implementing specific traffic measurements for all events, including marshals and further speed restrictions Supplemental tree planting to strengthen landscape screening Feedback on the project The project team behind the expansion plans are inviting members of the local community to look at the application online and leave their comments about the proposed expansion on the planning portal. Any comments left will help to show support for the application, bringing the local community together with a new and exciting sporting facility. Globetrotting Gruffalos are on the loose

Twenty Gruffalo toys were sent on a global journey, by the beloved children’s author Julia Donaldson CBE, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Gruffalo book in 2019. The toys are part of the Global Gruffalo project, created as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, to celebrate the project’s patron, Julia Donaldson CBE, and are sponsored by 20 local Horsham businesses. They set out on their journeys as Horsham District Council launched its Year of Culture celebrations at the beginning of January, and in the first six months of the year their travels have taken them far and wide.

The Gruffalos have been spotted as far afield as Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Italy, America and the Caribbean Islands. Their antics have included enjoying ice cream in Florence with sponsors Macmillan Publishers, high fiving Park Run runners with the Forestry Commission, touring with the Birmingham Stage Company and visiting many other theatres UK wide with The Capitol, the Rotary Club Gruffalo has visited Portugal with world renowned violinist Andrew Bernardi and by far the best educated Gruffalo is the toy sponsored by Brock Taylor Estate Agents who has visited almost every primary school across the

“I want to thank the hospice for all the help they’ve given me” In a month’s time, Andy Turner, from Horsham, will be cycling from London to Paris to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. After an amazing transformation, losing 13 stone in just one year, keen skateboarder, Andy is cycling to thank St Catherine’s for the care the hospice’s Lymphoedema team gave him. Here he tells us more. “I first became involved with St Catherine’s Hospice when I was referred to the Lymphoedema Clinic by my doctor. I weighed just under 29 stone and was struggling with some leg swelling after I’d broke my ankle skateboarding. Like many people I thought St Catherine’s was a place where

people came when they were at the very end of their life. But it’s so much more than that. And the Lymphoedema Clinic made a huge difference to me. I didn’t know what to expect but the care was really good. The nurses gave me advice and went above and beyond to support me with personalised care. For example the compression stockings they recommended were made to measure. If they didn’t have them at the hospice when I was there, one of the nurses would put them through my letterbox when they arrived as she lived near me. I could always phone up for advice too and I felt like the team really cared about me. During my time at the Lymphoe-

dema Clinic I started Slimming World. I went to my first meeting in April 2015 and lost 13 stone in a year. I fell in love with Slimming World and its ethos and I’m now a consultant myself! It’s been quite a transformation. When I first started coming to the hospice I was at my biggest. But I was losing weight the whole time I had appointments. The hospice nurses always noticed the difference as weight was dropping off me! Losing weight helped my Lymphoedema swelling too. And I can do so much more now. As I lost weight I took up cycling. I enjoy it as it gives me time to think and I’ve discovered new places in an area I’ve lived all my

life. When I was nearly 30 stone riding two miles to a local shop or walking was a challenge, but in 2017 I signed up to the London to Brighton ride and loved it! Then in 2018 I rode from London to Amsterdam as part of a team in memory of our friend who had a terminal brain tumour. We raised more than £2,000 and it got me thinking about raising money for the hospice. So I decided to sign up the London to Paris bike ride to raise money for St Catherine’s. I want to thank the hospice for the help they’ve given me. Although it’s a shorter distance than my last ride, London to Paris is more challenging terrain. I don’t have any fears about it though. I’m excited and I can’t wait to get going! It’s nice to support a local cause. I know people who’ve been touched by the hospice’s care and

I also have friends who work and volunteer here. My Mum worked at St Catherine’s as Bank Staff many years ago too, so I know how important the hospice is for our community. Knowing that St Catherine’s can only care for one in three local people is horrible. The hospice shouldn’t be in a position where it has to say no to helping anyone who needs it. MP visits Storrington Village Day Falling foul on footpaths

Arundel & South Downs MP, Nick Herbert, welcomed the return of the Storrington Village Day on Hormare Recreation Ground when he visited the event on Saturday (29 June). The Village Day attracted almost 2,000 visitors to its programme of traditional family fun and entertainment. The annual event was last hosted in 2014 and it was thanks to the efforts of the community, led by the Storrington & Pulborough Rotary Club, the Village Day made a welcome return to the local calendar. Attractions included the popu-

lar SADCASE (Storrington and District Classic and Sportscar Enthusiasts) classic car display, the local Lions giant book sale and a funfair. Volunteers ran the barbeque, and refreshment tents and cakes were provided by the Rotary Club wives. The planned dog show was cancelled, owing to the hot weather, on RSPCA advice. The MP toured the 50 stalls, and chatted to local people and volunteers, before being invited to draw raffle tickets and present the prizes. First prize was £150, with runner-up prizes of hampers and vouchers from the generous local

businesses. Horsham Town Centre Neighbourhood Wardens, Alison Page and Lucy Hallett, recently launched a competition with Greenway Academy students to design a poster to tackle dog fouling. The competition for Years 5 & 6 was launched in response to an ongoing community issue of people failing to clean up after their dog. The streets surrounding Greenway Academy are particularly bad and this can result in children accidentally walking in the mess

on their way to or from school. Lucy said: “Students were asked to design a poster to get the message across and they all looked brilliant. The winning poster designed by Isla Eve and reads: ‘You can leave your dog’s mess when pigs fly!’” Alison added: “This eyecatching poster is now on display across Horsham Town Centre and we hope it makes a difference.” Ms White, Head Teacher at Greenway, said: “It is very important for the children’s personal development that they see how they can engage and influence the community where they live in a positive way. “The children and staff were delighted to work alongside our colleagues on this important matter – keeping Horsham safe and beautiful for all.” Dog walkers not picking up their pet’s mess is unsightly and dangerous. People are at risk of becoming ill or even blind as a result of a parasite that is carried in the foul. Those who fail to pick up dog fouling could face a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £100.

Horsham company’s walk raises thousands in memory of colleague A team of 30 walkers from the materials and groundworks supplier Rudridge in Horsham, along with its customers and suppliers, has raised over £7,000 after walking up to 50km in memory of a much missed colleague. Tony Marshall, who worked at the company’s Farnham branch for many years, suffered a fatal stroke in 2016. The company organised its F.A.S.T. Road to Rudridge event, named in recognition of the acronym that helps identify stroke symptoms and act on them (Face, Arms, Speech, Time), to support The Stroke Association.

The walkers could choose to trek one of five routes varying in length from 13km to 50km. Of the 32 participants, 25 completed the 50km route with 30 of the walkers making it to the finish line after two walkers had to withdraw due to minor injuries. All routes took in the beautiful scenery of the Downs Link Path and the North Downs Way, finishing at Badshot Lea FC’s new ground on Westfield Lane in Wrecclesham. After completing the route, all walkers were treated to a wellearned pizza and awarded their medal, which was presented by Rudridge’s Sales Director, Paul

Duke. He said: “I’m so proud of our team of amazing walkers and thank them for all their courage, determination and commitment they have put into completing this extremely tough challenge. There were some really difficult parts to the day, but I’m sure we will all go away with some great memories. “Our goal was to do something together to not only commemorate Tony, but to raise money for a really important charity and increase awareness of stroke symptoms. Tabloid claims about ‘no blame’ divorce wrong, says Horsham Lawyer Nadine Moaddel, new head of family law at Horsham law firm Mancini Legal, claims that reporting on the new ‘No fault divorce’ bill by some tabloid newspapers is inaccurate and misleading. A number have asserted that the new ‘No Blame’ laws will make the divorce process too. ‘Quite simply,’ Moaddel says, ‘certain media pundits suggest that changes to the law will result in more people getting divorced. This simply isn’t the case.’ Moaddel says the assumption that our UK laws

Currently 42% of marriages end in divorce and to secure a Decree Absolute you must show that your marriage has ‘irretrievably broken down.’ This means proving adultery, desertion or unreasonable behaviour, failing which you need to be separated for 2 plus years if both parties consent, or 5 plus years if they don’t. The new Bill follows the ‘Owens case’ where a wife was unable to divorce her non-consenting husband because she could not prove he had behaved’ unreasonably.’ Therefore, her only recourse was to wait for 5 years’ separation. Moaddel points out that unreasonable behaviour can cover a multitude of things – from domestic or verbal abuse to snoring or chewing too loudly. Anything really that somebody finds intolerable to live with. However, like most good family lawyers, she feels that once people reach the point of wanting to get a divorce the impor-

tant thing is to focus on moving forward, not going over past problems. The new legislation has been welcomed by all sides of the political divide and campaigners alike. When it finally becomes law, it will mean couples can get divorced without one partner having to’ blame’ the other for the breakdown. ‘It will make the whole process less stressful, more dignified and a whole lot more straightforward,’ says Moaddel, adding ‘that in turn should make the finance and child arrangements easier to settle and less costly all round.’ The Bill, the first major uphaul to divorce law for 40 years, recently received a second reading in Parliament, who have promised to push legislation through as quickly as possible. With Brexit business still at the forefront, and no Prime Minister currently, just how long that takes remains to be seen. Milestone reached for Southwater community

Harry Lewis, Managing Director Berkeley Homes Southern, welcomed guests to the first official viewing of the newly built Southwater Community Building and the official handover of Southwater Sports Club on Thursday 27 June. Vice Chairman of the Southwater Parish Council, Cllr Michael Neale, was there to welcome guests to view the community building, while the Chairman of the Southwater Sports Club, Neil Harding, accepted the keys for the sports club. Berkeley Homes has worked together with The Fletcher Trust, Horsham District Council, Southwater Parish Council and Southwater Sports Club to deliver an extraordinary number of new facilities for the village. These include a new community building, a skateboard park and multi-use games area, and LEAP and NEAP play areas, for the young people of Southwater to enjoy. In addition, Berkeley Homes has also built a sports pavilion, cricket pitch, two tennis courts and two football pitches for Southwater Sports

Club. The sports and recreation facilities have been built by Berkeley on land gifted to the local community by the Fletcher Trust. Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher is the third generation to uphold the connection between his family and Southwater Sports Club, after his grandfather originally provided land for use of the cricket club, believed to be in the 1890s. Sir Henry explained: “I remember aged around 11 playing in boys matches when the family stayed at College Farm. We are looking forward to taking official receipt of the amenities very soon and will then be throwing open the doors to Southwater and the extended community.” Also in attendance with his family was former Councillor, Laurie Apted, who has played a huge part in Southwater’s development over the 57 years that he has lived in the village. The new community building has been named after him as a mark of respect for all the hard work, enthusiasm and time that he has given to Southwater. I have loved living in Southwater; it is a wonderful community and has been very good to me over the years. It is a great honour for me, my wife and my family who are all here today to support me and, hopefully, get the first look at this wonderful building.” The second part of the celebration took part at The Southwater Sports Pavilion, as Berkeley Homes’ Managing Director, Harry Lewis, officially handed over the keys to the Chairman of Southwater Sports Club, Neil Harding. Bringing state-of-the-art facility to the village, the pavilion will become a major focus in the lives

of many residents at Southwater. The building has been designed to give the community both a social and sporting centre. Internally, there is a large bar area, kitchen and extensive seating areas with darts, pool table and a large TV for airing those not-to-be-missed matches. Mr Harding commented: “It has been an extraordinary journey from concept to delivery of these incredible sports facilities and I am very proud to take receipt of the keys today on behalf of Southwater Sports Club. I would like to thank Sir Henry and the Fletcher Trust for making this new community hub in Southwater feasible. Depleted Horsham wallop league leaders Saturday June 29 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Brighton & Hove 224-8 (58 overs) – Horsham 229-1 (49.2 overs) Horsham won by 9 wickets – Horsham 28 points – Brighton 8 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Coming into this game Horsham occupied the penultimate spot while Brighton were league leaders, but Horsham knocked the visitors off their perch with an emphatic, thoroughly deserved and well-timed win, moving Horsham up to sixth in the tightly bunched lower table. With none of the teams now below them winning, Horsham took full advantage and it was particularly pleasing that their success was achieved by a depleted side, led by Tom Haines, totally out-playing high-flying Brighton with both bat and ball. Again, Horsham suffered from late withdrawals, including Sussex’s George Garton – at the half way point of the season, no player has participated in every one of Horsham’s games. Without skipper Michael Thornely, Will Beer and Nick Oxley, much depended on the batting of Haines, Craig Gallagher and Tom Clark - if not the strongest bowling attack could contain Brighton - which it most certainly did. To be fair to Brighton, they were without Sussex’s Delray Rawlins and Phil Salt

and were deprived of injured skipper Simon Hetherington’s bowling, too. But, take nothing away from Horsham – they controlled this game from start to finish. On a beautiful day for batting, Brighton won the toss and took first strike, but left-armer James Brehaut soon disposed of Hugo Gillespie and when Jonny Whiting dismissed fellow opener Bryce Hounscombe, also caught by keeper Sam Bell, the score was

Enter skipper Matt Machan, who hit 6 fours and looked threatening – until he danced down the wicket once too often to be stumped for 39, becoming the first of Harnoop Kalsi’s four victims. Tim Jarvis had come at three, constructing a painstaking 70, but when the evergreen Mark Haines – Tom’s father – trapped him LBW, none of the subsequent batsmen scored more than 20 as Kalsi (4-71) and Haines Snr (2-47) sent down 32 overs between them in searing heat. Chris Atherton’s upset at being given out LBW earned Brighton a Level I disciplinary warning before Felix Sheppard and Stephen Marsh added an unbroken 31, marginally assisted

by two tricky late catches in the deep. But, between the innings Horsham were confident of chasing down the 225 run target on the traditionally good batting wicket. Much, though, rested on whether Horsham could create a sound platform and Tom Haines and Gallagher, initially playing watchfully, soon allayed any concerns. Gallagher benefited from a life, but his enterprising innings deserved the rub of the green, and by the time he was out, for 74 – Brighton’s only success - Horsham had put on 150 for the first wicket. Tom Clark, with 56 took a particular liking to the bowling of Machan and Stephen Marsh, whose aggregate of 22.2 overs conceded almost half of Horsham’s requirement. Tom Haines’ excellent unbeaten 92 was key to Horsham’s impressive welljudged chase, telling the District Post: “I told Tom (Clark) to go for it and we won in a hurry!” Craig Gallagher added: “There was a bit of slow turn out there, but the wicket was fine and that was a great win for us.” While Mark Haines quipped: “That was my first team debut and I’ve got a 100% record!” Tom Haines and Clark had both done well for Sussex seconds earlier in the week. On Saturday Horsham are back on the road with a visit to struggling Eastbourne, whom they beat resoundingly at home on the first Saturday of the season, and at the Saffrons last season - when Eastbourne maintained a challenge for the title, finishing as runner up.

News Release to Horsham Cricket Club Members It is with great regret that the Club announces that it has had to release our overseas player, Jamie Brown due to an irregularity in the completion of our application for his visa. The Club needed an opening bowler for the 2019 season and Jamie was recommended to us by former players and New Zealand Internationals, Matt Henry and Michael Bates. He has played a number of first class games for Auckland in 2018 and as such we were advised to obtain a Tier 5 endorsement for him to enter the UK. The Club followed the step by step guidelines supplied by the ECB as required for a non-first class cricket club to be an official sponsor and were awarded the necessary ECB sponsor’s endorsement. Having received the endorsement we applied to the Home Office for a sponsor’s license from them and were awarded the necessary documentation on March 27th. Whilst the Home Office was processing the application, we noticed that the ECB guidelines indicate that for every player/ coach or coach only we wished to employ, we would need to

complete either Annex 7 or Annex 8. As Jamie would not be undertaking any coaching and purely operating as a player only, we felt, wrongly as it turned out, that we did not need to complete either Annex. After being given approval from the Home Office to become a licensed sponsor we subsequently and successfully applied for a Certificate of Sponsorship in the name of Jamie Brown. Jamie was then in a position to obtain a Tier 5 visa to enter the UK. On completion of the process we supplied copies to the Sussex Cricket League, who duly completed his registration. We believe that in good faith, we had correctly completed everything we should have but following a recent ECB audit of our paperwork required by them, we were advised that we should have in fact completed Annex 7. The crux of the issue is that as I said earlier, Jamie would not be undertaking any coaching and purely operating as a player only, we felt, we did not need to complete Annex 7. However, the ECB have now advised us that it was mandatory that every Tier 5 player must have a UKCC2 level

or equivalent coaching qualification irrespective of whether or not they were going to do any coaching. Had the ECB guidelines indicated that all clubs must complete annex 7 irrespective of what the player is going to do, we would have done so, although we now know that the outcome would have been very different in that Jamie would not have received an ECB endorsement because he doesn’t have a UKCC2 certificate. We are desperately sorry for Jamie who is here purely and simply as a cricketer and doing the job he loves, but has fallen foul of a genuine error in our paperwork. Despite our best efforts to get Jamie booked on a UKCC2 coaching course, which would have allowed him to stay and play, none were available in the UK until after his visa had expired. The ECB have no discretion in the matter as he doesn’t have a relevant coaching qualification and therefore it is with considerable regret, we are making the necessary arrangements to fly him home. Eastbourne Captain Jacob Smith was the most productive bowler with 3-84. In reply opener James Hockley scored 60 and Ben Twine 65 not out, with Scott Lenham - grandson and son respectively of Sussex legends Les and Neil – making 21. But, it was an unbroken last wicket partnership of 40 that secured the nervy draw for Eastbourne as they finished 48 runs short with nine down, the Hatchett brothers taking seven of the wickets – Lewis 4-95 and Bradley 3-64. Eastbourne are hovering one point above the relegation zone, while, after being docked a point because of their slow over rate, East Grinstead are fifth. The home team won at

Their Sri Lankan Test cricketing skipper, Kaushal Silva top-scored with 114, thirties from Steven Harman and Callum Saker and 22 from James Allen being the only other double figure contributions, Russell Talman taking 6-53. Middleton set a good platform with a 76 run opening partnership, with forties from both Harry Hovey and skipper Sean Heather, but at 167-7 they were in difficulty, until 32 from Talman and 16 from Craig Fowle, both unbeaten, got them home, placing Middleton fourth. News of Horsham and Roffey’s junior sides Saturday June 29 – Feeder team roundup Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham seconds played their Chichester Priory Park counterparts last Saturday, where the hosts chose to bat, posting 288-6, principally due to 136 from Dan Wells and 61 from Tim Wergen. Manrai Kalsi was Horsham’s leading bowler with 3-52, Max McAteer, Will Fenwick and Sam Bushby sharing the remaining spoils. Replying, Horsham soon found themselves 11-3, but they recovered to 89-4 with wicketkeeper Callum Jones going on to make a rapid 77. Fenwick ended on 35 not out, and there was resistance from Bushby, Darren Jordan and Andrew Williams, but Horsham were eventually all out for 216, Chichester winning by 72 runs, leaving Horsham cut adrift at the bottom of the table. Horsham thirds had an exciting finish on Horsham’s John Dew ground, where they entertained Ram CC seconds. Horsham batted first, making 225 all out in 39 overs, skipper Gerrard Weide leading from the front with 90, supported with 39 from keeper Chris Cooper and twenties from Harry Magnus and Tom Williams. All seemed lost when Roffey lurched to 14-4 and then 61-6, but mid and late order determination headed up by 73 not out from Sam Henderson and useful contributions from Sam Collins, Lewis Shivnarain, Oliver Bidlake and Tom Barnes, plus 34 extras, getting them the win in the 43rd over. Roffey thirds won a low scoring throbber, by an even tighter margin – one wicket. Hosts Chippendale batted first, finishing on 140-9 after 40 overs, Mohammad Ali taking 5-30, supported by two wickets from Jake Humphreys, Nathan Kerridge and Josh Kennedy taking one each. Roffey ease through in the National KO Cup Sunday June 30 ECB Royal London Club Championship – Round 4 (Regional Final) Three Bridges 173 all out (40 overs) Roffey 174-5 (37.3 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Three Bridges came back into the Premier League this season, and although they are struggling in penultimate position, it took some resolve for Roffey to win a tight league away game against them in May. And, after electing to bat, Bridges gave Roffey another examination at the Innes Memorial Ground on Sunday. Jamie Atkins drew first blood for Roffey, dismissing Oliver Blandford, but Bridges did not lose another wicket until they reached 48, when Luke Barnard accounted for the other opener, Conor Golding. After that it became the Ben Manenti show, the Aussie all rounder taking 6-22 in eight overs as, from 125-3, Bridges ebbed away after David Winn was out for 65. The last six batsmen contributed 30 between them, Alex Collins grabbing the final wicket as the visitors subsided to 173 all out from their 40 over allocation. The target was unlikely to be sufficient on Roffey’s high scoring ground, yet they were in deep trouble on 42-4 with Theo Rivers, Manenti, Rohit Jagota and Mike Norris all gone,

But, coming in at 4-1, Jibran Khan batted through to lead Roffey to victory with two and a half overs remaining, his unbeaten 104 off 110 balls, containing 8 fours and 2 sixes. Skipper Matt Davies gave much needed support with an unaccustomed, watchful 24, before George Fleming remained with 17 not out, being at the crease when Roffey clinched both of their wins last weekend. Last year – in their best ever National Cup run – Roffey were knocked out in the Semi Final at Stanmore and once again they are carrying the flag for Sussex at National level, going through to play Bexley at their Kent ground on Sunday July 21st. Bexley, captained by Adam Riley recently released by Kent, are top of the Kent League, and they crushed Hornchurch by 9 wickets in the National last Sunday after bowling them out for 150. Ex Kent all rounder Adam Ball, a former England Under 19 Captain, plays for Bexley, along with two Scotland players – Outer Hebridean Calum MacLeod, who was on Warwickshire’s books, and wicketkeeper Matt Cross, the latter two having been signed up for a Canadian T20 tournament, starting soon after the cup tie, for which their availability therefore remains to be seen. A full strength Bexley would clearly be a demanding proposition, but Roffey are no strangers to being tested by strong sides at National Level.

After their 21 run first wicket stand, Cuckfield staggered to 33-5 with Rohit Jagoa and Luke Barnard bowling frugally – Jagota finishing with 1-9 off his eight overs and Barnard 4-27 from 14, the pair sending down 13 maidens. Only Joe White’s late order unbeaten 41 saved Cuckfield from total ignomy as Ben Manenti helped to mop up the tail with 3-48, leaving Horsham 62 overs to knock off the 124 runs required for victory. keeper Jibran Khan put Roffey in an invincible position at 90-2, only for a run out and three further wickets to give the impression of a close encounter, but it was more a case of Roffey making heavy weather of a convincing win, with skipper Matt Davies and George Fleming getting them over the line with in excess of 34 overs to spare. Mid table Cuckfield seem unable to fulfil their potential, despite hiring some prominent overseas players in recent seasons. With Brighton losing at Horsham, Roffey re-took the lead by one point over the seasiders, whom they play at home in the top of the table clash on Saturday (11.30 start). Meanwhile, Matt Davies told the District Post: “We bowled well, to get Cuckfield out for a low score and got to within 34 of victory with only two down, then perhaps we were a little complacent. But, it was a good win in the end, and of course it is great to back at the top of the table!” Since coming in to the Premier League in 2011, Roffey have been champions four times (all in the last five years), whereas, since the League began, in 1971, Brighton have won it three times – in 1979, 2000 and 2007.

Broadbridge Heath FC thrilled with new ground

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The officials at Broadbridge Heath Football Club are rightly delighted with their new facility – The Countryside Stadium – adjacent to the new Bridge Leisure Centre and a far cry with what they were left with at their old ground just a few metres away. With the pitch looking good there is a real buzz around the new ground with a dedicated team working hard to get everything ready for the new season. On their initial inspection the league were happy to give the ground the thumbs up and it has been agreed that it will be used for semi finals, a happy arrangement, pleasing both parties. The league will soon be back for a final pitch inspection, but this is expected to be plain sailing – the floodlights, covering both the main ground and the neighbouring junior pitch and training area are a great improvement, the stand is up and the turnstile is ready for action. Inside the new clubhouse there

is much preparatory activity with Chairman Keith Soane and ex BBH player Mickey Parsons kitting out the kitchen and making the bar furniture, recycling top quality equipment and materials from the former Leisure Centre and other sports clubs and the end result will be exceptional. On the District Post’s tour, Broadbridge Heath’s Andy Crisp told us: “It’s taken 21 years to get to this point from when the first suggestion of a new ground was discussed! Ten years ago when Manager Steve Painter joined us we thought we’d be here in a couple of years, so its been a long journey, but highly appropriate that we get a wonderful new ground in our centenary year. When the former Leisure Centre closed our facilities didn’t meet the league standards because the ground had become too remote from the new building, but we were given special dispensation to carry on there on a temporary basis. But, we’re here now and we love it! And, we’ve got a long lease.” Inside the clubhouse there are four large TVs in the light and airy

club room, a well stocked bar and a professionally equipped kitchen, and excellent changing and shower arrangements for men and women players and officials. Final finishing work is being completed but The Countryside Stadium will undoubtedly be an exceptional community hub and social club, Andy Crisp adding: “The new season starts on Saturday August 3rd with fixtures to be announced shortly. We finished 6th in the Southern Combination Premier Division last season – our highest ever position - and we can’t wait to get started at our new home. Meanwhile, six pre-season friendlies have been arranged and there may be more to follow.” The friendlies arranged to date are shown below - to allow the pitch to fully settle in and to complete the finishing touches at the new ground, the home games will be played on the old Leisure Centre pitch. Red Devils training at Hop Oast ahead of loan deals

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Crawley Football Club – The Red Devils – have started training at Horsham Football Club’s new Hop Oast ground, Horsham FC saying that they are delighted to announce the establishment of a new partnership with Crawley Town, which will see Crawley using Hop Oast as their regular training base. And, importantly, following Horsham’s promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division,

the reciprocal agreement includes the opportunity for Horsham to use Crawley players on loan, Horsham CEO John Lines saying: “First and foremost, to have our own ground after 11 nomadic years is absolutely the most wonderful feeling! We emphathise completely with Crawley Town over their issue of lack of training facilities and we welcome them to Hop Oast. Crawley have been a delight to work with and we look forward to a mutually beneficial ongoing relationship.” Crawley’s training sessions will give them access to the two 3G pitches at Hop Oast, together with the clubhouse, changing rooms and ancillary facilities, and, of course, being ‘all weather’ the pitches will be available throughout the year. Crawley Operations Director Kelly Derham said: “We have been working with Horsham for the last six months and are thrilled to be using their superb facilities for squad training - as everyone knows, we have had issues with regular training facilities in recent years and long-term, as I announced earlier this month, our ambition is to have our own training ground.

But with the best will in the world this is still some way off. Hop Oast is superb and the directors at Horsham have been very accommodating in helping to meet the training needs of Manager Gaby Cioffi, his management team and players.” Cioffi added: “Hop Oast is a fantastic facility for us to work. The pitch is good and the changing rooms and other facilities are what we need. I thank everyone at Horsham for their hard work and everyone at Crawley for seeing this project through. It’s nice to have a place we know is going to be our training home for a long time to come.” After their first training session on Monday, Hop Oast got the thumbs up from the Head Coach and players, Gaby Cioffi summing up with: “It was the first time I have been at Horsham for a few weeks and it’s a transformation, a very nice facility for us - quiet, good pitch, good dressing rooms and places for the lads to have some food and relax, so all top.” Crawley will be playing Horsham in the official opening game at the Hop Oast on July 20th.
