Horsham’s first Children’s Parade ‘fitting legacy for Year of Culture’ Over 700 school children packed the streets of Horsham on Sunday 7 July to parade through the town sporting huge effigies, models and brightly coloured costumes. The parade started at the Drill Hall in Denne Road and travelled through the historic streets, to finish in Horsham Park, as part of the town’s ever popular Funday Sunday family event.
There are calls for it to become an annual event for future generations Organised by Happy Accidents, and supported by Same Sky, the parade was an official part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, supported by Horsham District Council, Horsham Festival and Funday Sunday. The day saw 17 schools taking part from across the district, after many weeks of hard work by teachers, artists and students on the huge variety of structures and pieces on parade.
Local samba band, Boom Tribe, led the parade through the streets, whilst Boko Olofi took up the beat midway. Schools danced, chanted, blew whistles and even performed dance routines entertaining the hundreds of spectators who lined the streets to watch the procession, with the feedback online and in real life being overwhelmingly positive. Commenting on the spectacle, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “This was a truly joyous community event for Horsham. “It engaged with hundreds of children, parents and teachers and attracted lots of spectators. “The sheer hard work and creativity that had gone into the models and costumes was so inspiring and contributed to an amazing atmosphere. A major ‘show and tell’ for the children and a unique opportunity for them to take part in a major cultural event. “It was real triumph for the Year of Culture and all those taking part. There are calls for it to become an annual event for future generations which would be a fitting legacy
for the Year of Culture beyond 2019.”

Community champion and leading Horsham Rotarian John Le Rossignol has died at the age of 72, following a long illness. He died on Friday, July 5, and his wife Eileen pays tribute to him here.
John retired from an international career in IT in 2000 and we moved from Belgium to Mannings Heath. John soon put his energy and networking talents to good use when he joined Horsham Rotary
Club in October 2000, his firstever Rotary meeting was interrupted by the arrival of daughter Maya, an all-round momentous day. Horsham Rotary weren’t to know what they had taken on. John put his energies into all sorts of projects from bringing fresh water to the African village of Rumuruti to projects closer to home. KidzStuff 2007 was a massive undertaking at Leonardslee Gardens, which aimed to bring children together to enjoy circus shows, Big Trucks, inflatables, science exhibitions with eminent scientist Heinz Wolf, overnight camping with the SAS, food and drink all in one place. KidzStuff continued for a few years moving into Horsham Park with the popular Guinness Book of Records “biggest” challenges – custard pie fights, sponge fights and, best of all, gunge fights with television’s Dave Benson Philips. Then came its replacement Sparks in the Park and finally Funday Sunday and this year was John’s finest Funday Sunday to date and such a shame that he didn’t quite make it. Anyone might think that these annual shows would be enough to keep you busy, not John. We had been in Edinburgh and seen decorated Giraffes in shop windows used as a means of promoting business. John was passionate about helping Horsham businesses not just to survive but to thrive. This led to the ideas for the Giraffe Trail (2013), Elephantastic (2015), The Horsham Pancake Race, The Easter Bunny Hunt, Trick or Treat, Children in Need, all of which came as a result of John’s work with local businesses.
John loved nothing better than wandering around Horsham stopping for a coffee and a chat, he thrived on listening to people’s views and problems and seeing how Horsham Rotary could help. John wanted people to know what Horsham Rotary was there to help the community. It was this drive and passion which saw the birth of the Set4Success charity. Since its inception in 2011 it has helped over 150 young athletes by giving them financial awards sponsored by local businesses. It also encourages local businesses to get involved in sporting challenges from darts to ultimate frisbee and anything else he and Ian Ford, from Horsham Council, could think of. John never wanted his name in lights but he was delighted to receive recognition from the club in the form of The Paul Harris Fellow and from the community in 2011 as Best Fundraiser and a Special Recognition Award in 2014. Aside from Rotary John was involved in many community projects in the Parish of Nuthurst and Mannings Heath as a parish councillor and an active parishioner. John and I loved entertaining and had countless parties and events at home from small dinners to street parties and mass lunches, friends new and old were brought together to just have fun and John was a master at making everyone feel their friendships were special – and they all were. John’s children Fleur, Josie, Tom and Maya and grandchildren will all miss his limitless energy and sense of fun. For me, life quite simply won’t be the same.

Funday Sunday has best-ever turnout
Photos by Jack Morrice
The day started with a downpour and ended with sunshine, on Sunday 7 July, as around 12,000 people came through Horsham Park to enjoy the exciting annual Funday Sunday, the largest community event in Horsham. Organised by the Rotary Club of Horsham, the event featured music and drama from local arts organisations, along with tasty food, a variety of stalls from local vendors and societies, and games for the whole family. The early cloudy atmosphere was immediately brightened with the arrival of around 750 primary school students from across the Horsham district in the popular Children’s Parade. Billed as joyous creativity through art, music and dance, the parade created a blazing festival atmosphere, with creative Mardis Gras-type costumes and elaborate banners celebrating all forms of art and pop-art. Throughout the day, the main stage was filled with local bands, choirs and dance groups, with karate clubs and the Capel wrestlers nearby, delighting the kids and bringing the festival to life. A big attraction was Titan the Robot, courtesy of Horsham District Council year of Culture 2019, who wowed the crowds with his hulking metallic frame and cheeky personality. Nearly 60 charity stalls were on hand to raise money and awareness for their causes, and 90 community groups were represented, including The Horsham Society, Horsham Sea Cadets, Horsham Community Responders, and the Horsham Geology Club. There was something for everyone, from every part of the local community. “It was a fantastic day that everyone seemed to enjoy,” said Peter Lake, president of the Rotary Club of Horsham, “Ro-
tary is all about community, so we’re thrilled with the turnout. It’s such a good opportunity for people to come together and, by all accounts, it was the best ever Funday Sunday.” A very special and unique feature of Funday Sunday is the free two-hour session that Benson’s Funfair allots to children registered as having special needs, so they can enjoy the rides in a calmer atmosphere before the event opens officially to the public. Hundreds of children were able to have an experience that otherwise would not be available to them, much to the delight and appreciation of their families. Mark Benson of Benson’s Funfair and Dave Smith, Rotary organizer of the special needs event, agreed that seeing the joy on the children’s faces is one of the most rewarding experiences of the day. The charity gave thanks to all who made the day special: “Horsham Rotary sends a
heartfelt thanks to all the Funday Sunday volunteers and sponsors who made the day possible. The Titan and Europa Explorer Scout groups were a tremendous help throughout the event. Sponsors include Gatwick Mitsubishi & Kia, NFU Mutual Henfield, Bluecoat Sports Health and Fitness Club, Mansell McTaggart, and Henfield Hire & Self Storage. As always, a special line of thanks goes to Horsham District Council and Town Center Manager Garry Mortimer-Cook, whose continuing support have been key to this popular event over the years. There is one more special name to mention. John LeRossignol, one of the stalwarts of Horsham Rotary and a driving force behind Funday Sunday and numerous other community service initiative – including the special needs funfair – passed away on 5 July, just a few days before his beloved Funday. He will always be remembered.”

Look out for Fluttering Free on local hospice art trail
With the launch of St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart community art trail this week, an artist and a business sponsor share why they chose to get involved with the local charity’s public art trail. Cowfold Ladies are a group of friends who got together to utilise their collective, creative skills to design Fluttering Free as part of St Catherine’s HeART to Heart trail. One of them, Caroline Collins, is also a nurse at St Catherine’s caring for local people on the wards. Here she tells us more about the group’s involvement in HeART to Heart. “Us Cowfold Ladies have lived in the same village for many years. Our children have grown up
together and over the years we’ve supported each other through many of life’s trials and tribulations. We’re good friends and the heart trail has given us a great excuse to spend a lot of time together! Fluttering Free was handpicked for sponsorship by Stooks at Newbridge Nurseries. They picked the heart in memory of a much loved colleague who was cared for by St Catherine’s. Caroline was amongst the team of nurses who cared for their colleague making their connection to Fluttering Free even more special. She and the other Cowfold Ladies recently met with Denise who works at Stooks.
This gave Caroline and Denise a unique chance to share memories of a special lady who they both felt privileged to have met. Caroline adds, “It was really moving to hear how our heart creation has such deep meaning for the people at Stooks. I and the other Cowfold Ladies enjoyed hearing more from Denise about her and her colleagues’ reason for choosing Fluttering Free to represent their support for St Catherine’s heart trail. We were touched and honoured that they entrusted us with such a responsibility. And knowing their personal connection to the hospice meant we were even more enthused to create the most beau-
tiful heart we could. As a nurse it’s been a privilege to take part in such a beautiful project for the hospice, and to combine the care I give local people with raising funds so we can provide even more care to people in the future. Our heart means a lot to all of us CowFold Ladies, and for me the words of the poem we’ve used on it epitomise what we aim to do for people at the hospice. To be a safety net which cares, supports and encourages them without confining or limiting their individuality.” Denise from Stooks said: “We’re thrilled to be working with St Catherine’s Hospice as part of their HeART to Heart trail. And it’s a
brilliant way for us to help promote the fantastic work that they do within our community. What better way to raise awareness of their work than to have an art trail that’s designed to bring the community together? In December 2017, we lost one of our dear colleagues. She was cared for by the wonderful team at St Catherine’s, who offered care and support not only to her, but to all of her family and friends too. We wanted to say thank you to the hospice for everything they did, and the heart trail gave us the perfect way to do this, and to help provide funds for their vital work. Our heart features butterflies to signify freedom and includes a beautiful poem written by Caroline, drawing on her experiences providing hospice care for people in our community. Alongside her, her friends are all talented artists and the heart is a splendour to behold. We’re really pleased with it! And we hope lots of you will come and visit us at Stooks to see the beauty of Fluttering Free for yourself.” To find out more about St Catherine’s HeART to Heart trail, please visit www.stch.org.uk/hearttoheart or follow @hearttrailuk on social media. Fluttering Free is one of 26 hearts on a public trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham. The trail began its ten week run on Thursday 4 July. See if you can find all the hearts across Crawley, Horsham, East Grinstead and Reigate this summer!

Horsham Children’s Parade 2019
As part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, the chosen theme was Art & Artists and each school interpreted the work of an artist in their own imaginative way. Kingslea Primary created a giant bust of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo; Northolmes Junior turned themselves into Andy Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’; Rusper Primary donned glorious orange costumes and paraded their giant ‘Tree of Life’, by Gustav Klimt, while Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee got surreal with Salvador Dali, dressing up as his melting clocks from ‘The
Persistence of Memory’. Leechpool Primary took on street artist, Banksy, Heron Way Primary Picasso-esque portraits, Holy Trinity Primary Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’, All Saints CE Primary Monet’s ‘Waterlilies’ and Southwater Junior Academy Jackson Pollock’s ‘splatter’ style paintings. Greenway Academy made a Yayoi Kusama-inspired ‘Octopumpkin’, while Holbrook Primary created a multitude of butterflies to represent Damien Hirst’s ‘Kaleidoscope’ paintings and Shipley CE Primary went vibrant with the colourful work of Joss Rossita.
St Andrew’s CE Primary represented Georgia O’Keefe, St Robert’s Southwell RC Primary Leonardo Da Vinci, St John’s Catholic Primary Romero Britto, Arunside Primary Bridget Riley, and North Heath Community Primary Kandinsky. Each and every school created amazing models and costumes to present at this truly inspiring and joyous community event. The carnivalesque atmosphere was taken to the max with infectious beats and rhythms, provided by Horsham’s Boom Tribe and Brighton’s Boco Olofi, which got both paraders and audiences danc-
ing in the street. Aleida Strowger, Founder of Community Arts Organisation, Happy Accidents, who initiated the project, said: “This has been such an exciting and inspiring journey. All the schools really threw themselves into the project and I was stunned to see the incredible models and costumes they had created.” “It was a pleasure and privilege to work with the schools and with Same Sky, whose Children’s Parade in Brighton was the inspiration for ours and the creative and production engine behind it. Both worked
extremely hard to ensure that this was a well-organised, fun and inspiring event. “Massive thanks to Arts Council England, Horsham District Year of Culture, West Sussex County Council, Saxon Weald and all those who generously donated to our crowdfunding campaign – you all believed in the project and saw its incredible value, not just to the schools involved but for the wider community who are united by such joyous events. We’re already seeing the community calling for the parade to be an annual event. Here’s hoping!”
Trekkers conquer the Lake District 5 Peaks for hospice A group of 18 intrepid explorers have successfully trekked the Lake District’s Five Peaks to raise money for St Catherine’s Hospice. During a sunny weekend at the end of June, the group swapped sunbathing for steps! Clocking up more than 40,000 steps each, as part of their challenge they scaled Scafell Pike, the highest peak in England. They also took on and conquered Rossetts Pike, Allen Craggs, Ills Crag and Goodend Peak. And their amazing efforts have been rewarded as they are on track to raise an incredible £16,000 for their local hospice. Amongst the walkers was Caroline Collins, who is also a nurse at St Catherine’s. She said: “I decided to take part in the 5 Peak Challenge to celebrate a milestone birthday. I wanted to celebrate how lucky I am to reach that milestone and be fit enough to take on a challenge like this, when many of the people I’ve cared for haven’t had this chance. The trek was the most physically and mentally difficult thing I’ve ever done. It was exhausting, but absolutely amazing! “I’m so proud of completing it, but I couldn’t have done it without
my fellow trekkers. They kept me going when I was flagging, and were a brilliant group of people to walk alongside. “Whenever I felt like another summit may be too hard for me to climb, I thought about the struggles that the patients I care for have to face. That helped me get to the peak of every hilltop. I was doing it for them, and for other local people who may need our hospice in the future.” Michaela Clements, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of our Team STCH trekkers. Their determination in completing a challenging trek was inspiring. And the money they’ve raised will make a huge difference to others in their community when it’s needed most. At the moment, St Catherine’s can only help one in three people who need hospice care. But with the help of people like our Lake District trekkers, in the future, our hospice will be able to care for even more local terminally ill people at one of the most difficult times.” If you would like to make a donation, please visit: www.stch.org.uk

Neighbourhood Wardens target drugs awareness across Horsham District Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Warden teams worked in partnership with Sussex Police to promote and support National Drugs Awareness Week from 24 to 28 June, offering advice and safeguarding information across the Horsham District about the dangers of drugs use. In Pulborough, the Wardens spent an afternoon at Pulborough train station, distributing information and talking to some 30 residents about how drugs can affect people’s lives. The Horsham wardens attended a local youth support club where they discussed the harm illegal drugs can cause. They also held a street briefing in the Carfax in partnership with the police, undertook three joint patrols with Police Community Support Officers to drugs hotspot areas and patrolled Horsham Park and train
station, engaging with the community about reporting drug use and how to access local support organisations. In Billingshurst, the wardens dropped into the youth club and visited areas where young people congregate, in order to promote drug awareness. The Storrington wardens spent time at the bus station where the older school children get off the coaches, handing out drugs information leaflets. They also gave out information to any other young people they saw around the village. In Southwater, the wardens gave a drugs awareness presentation to the Southwater Youth Group. The young people were keen to engage in related activities and discussions around identification of illegal substances and the harmful effects. The wardens also

The wardens in Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding visited Steyning Grammar School at the end of the school day, handing out drug information leaflets and talking to students about the dangers of drug use. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “Drug misuse is a growing issue and I am pleased that, as a
council, we made a real success of the Drugs Awareness Week, with so many of our Neighbourhood Wardens engaging in so much activity across our local area. “It was a really successful example of working in partnership with other third party agencies to run a number of effective activities, offering advice and support in our communities.” In addition to the warden activity, on Thursday 4 July, there was a free information briefing session in Horsham’s Park Barn for parents of secondary school
age children, regarding drugs and criminal exploitation. The evening was run by PC Darren Worsfold and Kirsty Lindgren from WSCC’s Children’s Services, with support from the council’s Anti-Social Behaviour team. Children call for ‘Climate Action’at Billi Carnival for 3rd year running On Sunday 30 June, children from the Horsham and Billingshurst area demonstrated their creative skills in calling for rapid de carbonisation and a clean and healthy environment, for people and animals, at home and across the world, in the Billingshurst Carnival. The procession for 2019 and the last two years was organised by Carrie Cort, founder of Sussex Green Living, an environmental awareness and education initiative, co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café and initiator of the South East Climate Alliance. This unique greener living procession was formed of people of all ages and promoted greener transport, clean renewable energy and climate solutions, including an entourage of electric cars. Carrie explained: “Climate change is in the news most days now, which is excellent. About 115 councils around the UK have announced climate emergency. On 26th June, Horsham District Council acknowledged a of mo-
tion strong scientific evidence and growing public concern about a wide range of damaging environmental matters, including a climate emergency. West Sussex County Council who [sic] noted Climate Emergency on 5th April”. In 2016, Carrie trained with the former US Vice President, Al Gore, in climate change communications. She added: “Many people see climate change as a big and scary subject and try to avoid it. Over half (60%) of organisations worldwide who use Emotional Intelligence assessments in their leadership development say it has proven an increased return on investment. At its core, emotional intelligence is about self-evaluation; being aware of your strengths, weaknesses, personality traits and what drives you. Learning about yourself and how you interact with others is a crucial skill that can be utilised in the workplace, particularly in terms of negotiating with clients, influencing employees and creating

a positive work environment. To find out how emotionally intelligent you are, visit: https://psysoft.articulate-online. com/3807869000 Psysoft’s Top 5 tips to using emotional intelligence to skyrocket your career 1. Don’t be afraid to take a leap Sometimes it may be scary taking that extra leap, whether it’s taking a different job or asking for a pay rise. Being assertive can help push you into situations that may benefit your career path. Challenging yourself is growth and learning to always go for the more difficult option may help you progress more quickly. 2. Identify your strengths By identifying your strengths you will learn to be comfortable and
confident in your abilities. If you ever feel out of your depth at work, don’t be afraid to make mistakes in order to learn, grow and develop. 3. Be understanding of people around you Being emotionally intelligent not only means understanding your own strengths and weaknesses but being empathetic of those around you. Your colleagues or managers may be feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Don’t let them get to you personally; simply take the criticism, understand their feelings, and continue to focus on growing yourself. 4. Identify your weaknesses By knowing your weaknesses you are able to identify your areas of improvement. This means you can either avoid careers which may be unsuitable, or if you are in a role that requires additional skills, you can learn to develop these. 5. Wellbeing Practising mindful exercises such as 5 minutes of meditation each morning or taking a walk at lunch can significantly decrease your stress levels and thus improve productivity. Tim Evans, Director of ELearning company, Psysoft, said: “Taking an emotional intelligence assessment can reveal surprising and informative insight into why we behave as individuals. It can reveal the conditions in which we work best, and the environments that feed our success. By understanding your emotional functioning, you are able to learn to behave more effectively. Emotional intelligence results in measurable achievement, success in leadership, and ultimately – enhanced financial performance.” Celebrity Psychologist and founder of Multi-Health Systems (MHS), Dr. Steven Stein, commented on the research: “Emotional intelligence can be measured and improved on an individual basis. The good news is your emotional intelligence is not permanently fixed but is open to lifelong improvement. If you really want to change your life, you can.”
Legislation you need to know before letting your property
Courtlands, Southwater
It’s fair to say aspiring landlords have a lot to consider before deciding whether to rent out a property, with mounting regulation they need to remain compliant or risk heavy fines. Landlords are already required, by law, to ensure the following:
3. Client Money Protection
• Tenant deposits are protected within the correct timescale
All lettings agents, since April 2019, been required to register with a Client Money Protection (CMP) scheme. Agents who hold client money are required to have indemnity insurance, appropriate CMP procedures and display the CMP certificate. While this provides tenants and landlords with a layer of protection when it comes to their money, knowing what to look out for when engaging a letting agent is key.
• Statutory documents are served to the tenant before a tenancy begins
4. Energy Efficiency requirements
• Tenants satisfy Right to Rent criteria • Furniture and furnishings are compliant with fire safety regulations • Smoke and Co2 alarms are installed in the correct places and working • Relevant appliances pass annual Gas Safety checks
Here are five key pieces of legislation recently introduced that landlords should be aware of... 1. Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation Act) 2018 From 20th March 2019, tenants have the legal right to take direct action against their landlords under the Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS). Previously, the local authority could issue a notice to landlords if a rental property was deemed to be unfit. But now tenants will be able to take their landlord to court if any identified failings have not been rectified. 2. Tenant Fees Act 2019 The Tenant Fees Act will have a profound effect on landlords cashflow from June this year. With lettings agents no longer permitted to charge tenants fees it is likely landlords will face additional costs when re-letting their properties for services such as referencing, inventories, check-ins and check-outs.

Regulations on Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) came into force in April 2018. That meant landlords renting out properties with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of below E were unable to legally let those homes. The criteria that allowed a property to be exempt have been restricted. Landlords with properties below the E rating must now make recommended changes up to a cost of £3,500 before they can consider applying for an exemption.

Vale Drive, Horsham
5. Immigration Act 2014 Since 2016, landlords and lettings agents have been required by law to check each tenant’s right to rent property in the UK. Introduced as part of the Immigration Act 2014, landlords or agents who fail to perform the checks, or keep documented evidence of the evidence of the checks, can face fines of up to £3,000 per tenant. Although the High Court ruled that the Act breaches human rights, the legislation is still in place for now. We’ve outlined key legislation here, but there are many more legal obligations landlords need to be aware of. The best way to ensure you are compliant is to speak to the Martin & Co Horsham office just off the Carfax who will be able to offer advice.

The school holidays are fast approaching and finding different things to do to fill the summer days is not always easy. However, a rare mix of opportunities, excitement and fun for children of all ages, awaits children at the Loxwood Joust as this unique family event provides an action packed day out. Nestled at the top of Midsummers Meadow you will find the Children’s Kingdom; a festival within a festival, where the Mediaeval Groat is the currency. It is here that you will find all manner of activities and where young princes and princess can take part in a myriad of goings-on tailor made just for them. Having seen some of his antics at the entrance gate upon arrival, Devilstick Peat’s jester shows raise laughter from children and parents alike, before many then partake in his jesting skills workshops to hone and fine tune some of the many tricks required by a mediaeval jester.
But maybe their sights are set on a trail of valor, and taking part in the knight training school would enable them to rise to the challenge? On joining the swordsmen and with a promise to behave with honor, the 30 minute sessions will teach all budding knights - both young and more mature! - the basics of handling a sword and buckler in combat. With the steps, the sword moves and the attack and defense strokes this is not a school for the feint hearted, as the trainee swordsmen are trained in authentic mediaeval swordsman’s skills for combat. For some, the chance to wield the most deadly weapon on the battlefield is more of a draw, and archery is a must. This is the chance to test their bow skills against the exciting range of targets, but can they hit the life-size boar and stag? A more relaxing choice and a favorite for some young princesses, is the stunning face painting;

although those of a more daring nature can leave parents aghast with the very realistic and ghastly wound painting instead. And as a unique memento of their day in mediaeval times, the chance to cast their pewter pendant from molten metal, before proudly displaying it for all to see is a winner all round. Then there is Pelt the peasant! This fun activity always brings a huge smile to children’s faces as they throw wet sponges at the peasants, or their parents, as they stand in the stocks. All for a good cause and wonderfully cooling on a hot summers day, the more sponges thrown, the more money raised for the chosen charity. And do not forget that all around the Loxwood Meadows the characters are delighted to explain, demonstrate and answer the very searching questions posed by younger minds. Perhaps they would like to try on some armour, receive favors from the Queen, or learn about our con-
nection with nature from the wise women witches and faeire goddess mother. The executioner will demonstrate his knowledge of crime and punishment, maybe the swordsmen will teach the dance steps essential to good swordsmanship, and they could try their hand at Tafl in the living history village. But that is not all… Roving entertainers will engage and delight as they stroll round the site and Lullaby Lisa with her giant soft companions will be telling her wondrous tales to delight her audience. And of course along with the bouncy castle and donkey rides, there are photo opportunities galore. Whether it be with a jousting knight, or a knight in full battle armour, with Queen Katheryn Adelina 1st or whilst standing with witches around a cauldron, the opportunities for children to pose with their favorites are many. The Loxwood Joust returns to Loxwood Meadow on the 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th August. Each day from 10am to 6pm an unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry guarantees a day out like no other, at this unique, fun and educational day out for all the family! Cottesmore Ladies fund wonderful sensory garden

dation Trust, was chosen as the Lady Captain’s Charity of the Year 2018 and received a grand total of £6,863.50 which was used to renovate an existing garden into a new sensory garden, planned and designed by service users at the hospital, creating a welcoming and peaceful space to be enjoyed by patients, carers and visitors for years to come. Not only have patients been involved in plan-
ning and planting the garden, patient gardening groups will also be maintaining it. Fundraising events including coffee mornings, raffles, a sponsored walk, quiz nights and charity fun days took place throughout the year, and continued unabated despite the devastating fire at Cottesmore last June. Lady Captain for 2018, Heather Skinner, set herself a £5,000 target for Heads On, saying: “They work in partnership with the NHS to make things better for those in need of help by introducing a range of projects, including provision of a gym to boost mental health, and other ways to assist patients and families – from across Sussex and beyond. The generosity of our Ladies’ Section has totally astounded me. We are a small group and through many avenues of fundraising we have raised over £6,800. We are pleased that this has gone towards the new sensory garden as it will improve the facilities for service users, staff and visitors. We all appreciate this is a great cause as one in four people are affected by some form of mental health illness. Cottesmore Ladies are also really happy to know that the garden will be named the ‘Phoenix Garden’ after one of the courses at the Club. We very much look forward to visiting the garden in the future and seeing it blossom!” Isobel Clark, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist at Langley Green Hospital, said, “As well as providing an immediate positive therapeutic purpose in creating the project, service users will manage the area on an ongoing basis so it continues on into the future. We are absolutely thrilled to be able to move forward with this, and it would not be possible without the support and generosity of Heather and all at Cottesmore. What a difference this is going to make!”

Baseball comes to Town
Baseball Martin Read - Sports Reporter Baseball is played in the UK – including, in Sussex, junior baseball at Five Oaks, and, on an amateur basis, by the Brighton Buccaneers and it is also popular in The Netherlands. But, the US baseball authorities are keen to spread the professional game into Europe, having previously introduced it into Mexico, Japan, Australia and Puerto Rico. So, a deal was done with the London Olympic Stadium – now home to Premier League Football’s West Ham – and the carnival came to town with Saturday and Sunday games between reigning World Champions Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, heading up the American League West Division, billed as “The London Series.” Previous attempts to introduce American team baseball have been staged, including at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge in 1914, in front of King George V, but the recent London games were the first ever regular season top flight fixtures – serious stuff, with the Duke and Duchess of
Sussex in attendance for Saturday’s ceremonial first pitch. Installing baseball at the Olympic Stadium was a considerable challenge – see - https://www. football.london/west-hamunited-fc/news/watch-incredible-baseball-transformationwest-16497597 - for some reason thousands of tons of soil were brought over from the States – have we nothing suitable? And, apart from converting the pitch, setting up electronic scoreboards and signage and flying in a multitude of players and officials was no small exercise. The effort was rewarded with, despite very high ticket prices, a 60,000 sell out crowd on the Saturday and another huge attendance on Sunday, boosted by fans jetting in from across the pond. It was a lively, noisy spectacle with a raucous atmosphere at the Olympic Park, with practice for fans taking place outside the stadium. The big game’s all too short bursts of activity, with batters trooping off after very few balls, were constantly interrupted with tee shirts being fired into the crowd, or balls being thrown there, or bounced around overhead, Mexican waves, sing-
ing, whacky races (Henry V111th beating Freddie Mercury) and warm up sessions – presumably to accommodate limited attention spans. The result, interspersed with purveyance of high calorie junk food, and beer (at £6.50 for a small bottle) was a disjointed, unnecessarily lengthy – five hour – afternoon. It was not always easy to follow the trajectory of the white ball against the background of many spectators wearing that colour, but there were some impressively casual one-handed catches, albeit gloved, amid some occasionally shoddy ground fielding. And, huge roars went up on the precious few times when the batter hit the ball over the pitcher’s head and into the outfield, England’s Eoin Morgan having hit the ball into the crowd 17 times in a single innings in the Cricket World Cup. I was told that I had seen a typical game on the Sunday and that there were highlights. Undoubtedly, skills were on display with varied pitching techniques, but the batting just seemed to be repetitive, rarely effective, crude slogging, and as only shots played into the V counted, not many runs were scored. However, the punters clearly loved it. T20 cricket – and the forthcoming 100 ball variety – is not beloved by everyone interested in the sport, but, given a bit of knowledge about what would be going on before them, it could be very attractive to baseball fans, with far more continuous action and (say it quietly) an even wider range of skills on display. But, if you want to see baseball, then it will be back in London next summer. Oh, what were the results at the Olympic Stadium ? It wasn’t immediately obvious, but apparently NY Yankees won 17-13 on Saturday and reprised the win on Sunday (12-8).

News of Horsham and Roffey’s junior sides Saturday July 6 – Feeder team roundup Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the top versus bottom clash at Cricketfield Road runaway leaders, Worthing-based Chippingdale elected to bat, setting Horsham a daunting 296 run target, with three batsmen topping 50 and another almost reaching that milestone. Horsham began highly promisingly, skipper, opener Rhys Beckwith, making 95 from 77 balls, including 10 fours and 4 sixes. Mali Bardouille-Lewis scored 31 and Wicketkeeper Callum Jones 30, but four late wickets from Lee Donaldson – who finished with 5-46 – enabled Chippingdale to win by 56 runs, the last Horsham wicket falling off the penultimate available ball, leaving Horsham stranded at the foot of the table. Meanwhile, on Horsham’s John Dew ground, leaders Crawley Eagles’ thirds opted to bat against their Horsham counterparts and made 225 all out, despite skipper Mark Haines’ 4-25 and two wickets apiece from Tom Williams and Ed Clark. When Horsham replied, Chris Cooper was the batting star, but even his 101 was not enough to avoid defeat, only three of his team-mates reaching double figures, Horsham, cut adrift in the basement, losing by 35 runs. At West Chiltington, Roffey 2nd XI racked up a formidable 45 over 332-6, taking full advantage of their 162 run first wicket platform, Sachin Naik making a quick fire 145, Ollie Rivers 84 at almost two a ball, and Anish Padalkar 64, eight West Chiltington bowlers feeling the strain. When the hosts
responded, Tom Barnes was Roffey’s most successful bowler with 4-59, the 104 run win placing Roffey second, just a single point behind Worthing Firsts. Roffey 3s – now nine points clear at the top of the table, also pulled off a big win, at Benfield Valley, where they put their opposite number from Portslade under the cosh, thanks to another century – 114 – from the skipper, opening bat Josh Kennedy. Wicketkeeper Ed Barnes supported well with an unbeaten 70, while Josh Gander made 34, enabling Roffey to close on a very healthy 258-4 from their 40 overs. Both Portslade openers got starts, but Jim Barnes soon trapped skipper Ian Morley LBW before bowling three more batsmen and having another caught behind to finish with 5-28, rounding off a good Saturday for the Barnes family. Sam Collins provided excellent back up with 2-15, the hosts collapsing to 116 all out for Roffey to win by 142 runs. Faygate’s ground saw Roffey 4s beat Southwater 3s by 85 runs after Roffey had made 199-5 from their 40 over allocation, mainly courtesy of 89 from opener Matthew Howell, Roffey’s keeper. In reply, Southwater got off to a disastrous start, Ben Gibbs taking the first three wickets with just a single coming from the bat. Then, with Huda Rehman grabbing two more scalps, five Southwater batsmen were out before the teapot had cooled down. Frankie Mills, coming in at six, introduced a measure of respectability with 68, but the next highest contribution was 5, Southwater being indebted to 31 extras to get them past the 100 mark. Roffey 4s are now fifth in the table
Horsham Cycling revels in time trial – and more besides
Cycling Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cycling riders enjoyed
success in their 10 Mile Open Time Trial. President and Competitions Secretary Stewart Forbes tell-
ing the District Post: “After two weeks of very unsettled weather everything came together nicely for our annual Open 10 Time Trial, attracting club riders from across our region. Even the early morning mist cleared by the time the first rider - event promoter and Club member Jon Fry - rolled off the start line. For the second year running we were on the Steyning course, starting on the Steyning bypass and heading south east through Bramber and Beeding Court roundabouts before turning at the Shoreham flyover and retracing back to Steyning.” A field of 51, including nine Horsham Cycling members took up the challenge, and with the good weather conditions the times were impressive, the top two both dipping under the 20 minute mark, meaning an average speed of over 30 mph! James Rix of Team Bottrill beat Chris McNamara (Nuun Sigma Sport)
into second, followed by Matt Smith (Team ASL) in third. The fastest lady was Joscelin Lowden (The Independent Pedaler) in a time that also led her to 6th overall, Stewart adding: “The quickest from Horsham Cycling was Martin Tickner, followed by Tony Brown and Jon Fry and there were many great rides by others, including a course Personal Best for Katie Simmonds. Sadly Horsham Cycling missed out on the team award - by just 24 seconds - to trainSharp! But, our club rider Tony Brown picked up 1st place in the Veterans competition competing under Cycling Time Trial standards. And, as in previous years, it was good for Horsham Cycling to receive thanks from the racers for another great event and, as ever, we are indebted to our excellent volunteer marshals, and for the friendly atmosphere back at the HQ.” Horsham Cycling is an inclusive, welcoming club for riders of
all standards and cycling interests, the wide ranging activities, aimed at gaining full enjoyment from the district’s outstanding countryside, including Sunday rides from Horsham’s Carfax, grouped according to experience and ability, away weekends to the Isle of Wight, Belgium and elsewhere, road races, and summer time and reliability trials on local courses. There is also the annual Hill Climb, and the Dunwich Dynamo – a night ride from London to the Suffolk Coast for breakfast on the beach, plus a downhill event, as well as a number of social activities – a post ride lunch, awards dinner and pub get-togethers. Stewart Forbes summing up saying: “Further information is available on the Horsham Cycling website - https://www.horshamcycling. co.uk/ and if you are interested in joining, the club will be delighted to hear from you – you can come along and try a ride or two first if you would like to!”

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last season Eastbourne were title contenders well into August but Horsham beat them in a high scoring game at the Saffrons, Tom Haines scoring an unbeaten 120. Both sides, though, have been mercurial prior to this game, leaving each of them in need of a win to consolidate their league stand-

ing. This time Horsham won the toss and elected to bat, with Joe Willis, aged 15, and Tom Clark (18) taking the responsibility. Clark and skipper Michael Thornely were both out cheaply, but at 87-2 with Willis batting watchfully, a useful score on Eastbourne’s high scoring ground was suggested. But, from 147-3 wickets fell all too regularly. Akshay Ramani, one of the quartet of students from Worth School in Horsham’s side, made 37, but once Willis was out for 51 and Nick Oxley for a patient 49, the floodgates opened, the last six batsmen scoring 20 runs between them, Archie Lenham 2014 - 2015 - 2016 - 2018 with 3-35 and two run outs reducing Horsham, with seven players under 19, to 184 all out. Eastbourne’s wicket at the Saffrons is conducive to batting, so much depended on whether Horsham could dismiss the prolific former

Harnoop Kalsi had opener Malcolm Johnson caught by Jonny Whiting, but that was Horsham’s sole success, Hockley and Scott Lenham hitting 22 fours and a six between them, finishing the job unbeaten - Hockley on 96 and Lenham on 63, Eastbourne winning in good time. Horsham, 31 points clear of bottom side Mayfield, are looking for further success to move them away from the relegation zone, and on Saturday they return to Cricketfield Road to play third in the table Preston Nomads, to whom they lost heavily at Fulking in a rain reduced limited overs match in May. ners wheeled away. Skipper Matt Machan danced down the wicket second ball to deposit new bowler Luke Barnard over the rope and hit three more big sixes, but after his 19 ball 33 was ended by Ben Manenti, the next four batsmen made only two runs between them, with four wickets going down on 98. Coming in at number 11 Matt Wood’s 29 included 2 maximums and 4 boundaries, but, although the last wicket partnership of 38 – the biggest of the innings by a distance - was somewhat irksome, a target of 137 was never going to be anything like enough, especially as Roffey had more than ample time to get the runs. Manenti took 4-33, Barnard 4-47 and Jagota 2-27, Roffey maintaining control, regardless of Brighton’s haphazard belligerence. The visitors were still without long term injured skipper Simon Hetherington’s bowling, and Tim Jarvis was also absent – he had scored 70 the week before. And, they endured the late withdrawal of another batsman, but greater application would have required persistent Roffey to work far harder for their wickets. When Roffey replied they began with a plethora of boundaries, but they had suffered three reverses by the time they reached 61,

Yet Jagota’s unbeaten 42 and double figure scores from Theo Rivers, Manenti, Mike Norris and skipper Matt Davies saw Roffey home before 3.45 with more than 50 overs unused. Davies told the District Post: “Our spinners bowled well, getting all ten wickets. It was a bit disappointing to be four down at the end - some of our top order batsmen haven’t quite clicked yet, they just need to convert good starts and once that happens they’ll have a real confidence boost and get some big scores. However, it was good to get another win and following Brighton’s two consecutive big losses, we’re now 27 points clear of them at the top of the table.” Reflecting on his excellent all round season,
Its great to get some wickets when I miss out with the bat! Ben Manenti added: “Its great to get some wickets when I miss out with the bat!” Another busy weekend beckons for Roffey - this Saturday they travel to Premier League newcomers Mayfield, currently languishing at the foot of the table - Roffey beat them in May’s one sided home game. Then, on Sunday, Roffey return to base to compete against Division 2 side Lindfield in the Quarter Final of the Sussex T20 Cup, starting at 2pm. Meanwhile, after breaking a bone and dislocating his shoulder in an awkward fall during the cup game against Three Bridges on June 30th, Roffey’s Josh Fleming expects to be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Premier League round up – matches on Saturday July 6th Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Cuckfield bottom of the table Mayfield elected to bat and posted a challenging target – 254, the top four batsmen all making useful contributions, including 76 from Ben Fitchet and thirties from wicketkeeper Harry Lloyd and Sri Lankan Test player Kaushal Silva. Three middle order batsmen reached double figures, but the last four wickets went down for 10 runs, Joe White taking 3-46. Replying, Cuckfield started badly, and at 13-3 an upset looked a distinct possibility, but, not for the first time, Marcus Campopiano provided burgeoning resistance, his 90 and Harry Clark’s 44, and resilience from the lower order got Cuckfield – now sixth - home by 2 wickets with 9 balls remaining. For Mayfield, opening bowlers Matt Cooke and Steven Harman each took three wickets. In the penultimate berth prior to their game at the Middleton Sports Club, Three Bridges were pleased to beat their hosts, and move up to eighth, 15 points above the relegation zone. Middleton (fourth) declared on 239-9 after batting first. Mahesh Rawat was in the runs again, although this time he was out
– an infrequent occurrence – but not before he had made 94. Opening bat Harry Hovey was next highest scorer with 61, Adam Jones being Bridge’s most successful bowler with 3-52. Tommy Davies then accounted for Bridges’ openers before a run out reduced them to 55-3, but a 165 run fourth wicket stand between reliable 25 year old Zimbabwean born Kiwi, David Winn, saved the day. Winn’s unbeaten 113 shepherded Bridges home by four wickets with just one ball to spare, thanks to able support from wicketkeeper Joe Walker (70), despite Craig Fowle’s 3-51. The Hatchetts – former Sussex left arm paceman Lewis, and his brother Bradley took five wickets between them, restricting Preston Nomads to 203 all out at Fulking, for whom Nathan Poole made 71, Danial Ibrahim 46 and Dominic Shepheard 31. Middle of the table, East Grinstead’s batting has not always been dependable this season, but last Saturday it was consistent, the top four contributing well - notably 84 not out from Leo Cammish and 53 from Ollie Graham, Grinstead knocking off the runs to win by six wickets with an over unused, denting third-placed Nomads’ hope of mounting a challenge for the title.
Andy Barr bowls Billi home at the double Saturday July 6 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Billingshurst 217 all out (44.5 overs) – Lindfield 160 all out (37.4 overs) Billingshurst won by 57 runs – Billingshurst 30 points – Lindfield 13 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst moved up to second, just eight points behind leaders Hastings & St Leonards Priory after completing the double over Lindfield, bowling them out cheaply after doing the same at Jubilee Fields on the first Saturday of the season. On Lindfield Common Billingshurst decided to bat first last Saturday and benefited from a 69 run opening partnership between Louis Storey, who finished with 32, and Jordan Willoughby (44). Skipper Ben Mortimer subsequently top-scored with 48 and wicketkeeper Josh Wood made 36, with useful contributions
from Max Hollander and Scott Stratton. Shohel Ahmed took 5-33, but while Billingshurst’s 217 all out was not a killer score, it was a challenging one given their bowling strength. Lindfield’s openers went quickly, and although the next five batsmen all made promising starts, skipper Simon Shivnarain scoring 41 and Harry Choudhury 39, Andy Barr undid them with 6-54. Barr bowled the last four batsmen in double quick time, after earlier claiming the prized scalp of IPL all rounder Apoorv Wankhade, who had taken two economic Billingshurst wickets. Mortimer chipped in with 3-46, cementing Billingshurst’s commanding victory. On Saturday, in a top of the table clash, Billingshurst return home to take on Hastings, who were relegated from the Premiership last season, but are now in pole position to get back up to the top flight.
