Another huge housing development proposed martin read
Reporter
Horsham is certainly doing its bit to combat the housing shortage – with huge developments in Broadbridge Heath and Southwater and more in train for North Horsham, the former Novartis site, and possibly near the Boars Head pub. Yet, now a substantial development is being proposed for the 124 acre Horsham Golf & Fitness site, accessed from the Worthing Road opposite the Park & Ride facility. Horsham Golf & Fitness have just staged two exhibitions outlining their proposals in conjunction with the London-based Generator Group, who have acquired a 50% interest in the golf club. Generator describe themselves as a diverse property group and have been responsible for developments in Bristol, Felixstowe, Ipswich, Norwich and Rottingdean. The background is that in late
2015, Horsham District Council adopted the Horsham District Planning Framework (HDPF), which identified or allocated sites to deliver 16,000 homes between 2011 and 2031, and HDC is currently reviewing HDPF to identify sites for development from this year to 2036. At this stage Generator Group and Horsham Golf & Fitness are not submitting a planning application, but are instead promoting a vision via the HDPF review, by developing what they describe as “an emerging masterplan for Horsham Golf & Fitness Village”. The vision is to create a health-based community with facilities for the district, to augment the existing golf arrangements – founded in 1993 - and the new Horsham Football Club facilities with an “evolving programme of professional sports and wellbeing coaching and other participation opportunities for all ages”. In addition to up to 555 new homes, the plan, if approved, would be to retain a 9 hole golf course and a 9 hole academy course with a new clubhouse, a

Horsham District Council has worked in partnership with Sussex Police to successfully convict a Crawley man for fly-tipping items of waste in the Horsham District. Mr Simon Paul Thompson at-
tended Crawley Magistrates Court on 16 May 2018 for failing to comply with duties under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Mr Thompson pleaded guilty to the offence of illegally fly-tipping items of waste at Holmbush Farm,
Faygate, Horsham. Mr Thompson was fined £55 for the offence and a £32 Victim Surcharge was imposed. He was also ordered to pay a contribution of £500 costs to the Council. Welcoming the conviction,
Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste and Recycling, Cllr Philip Circus, said: “The District Council has a zero tolerance approach to environmental crime, such as fly-tipping, and as this successful conviction proves, we will actively pursue offenders and prosecute them accordingly. “Clearing up after fly-tippers alone, costs the council some £80,000 a year. “This particular case represents our commitment to tackling this practice and sends out a clear message to those who act illegally. “We openly encourage the general public to report any instances to us so that our enforcement team can investigate them.” If you wish to report an instance of fly-tipping please contact Horsham District Council on 01403 733144 or visit horsham.gov.uk.

Generator and Horsham Golf & Fitness emphasise that this is a starting point discussion and that they are keen for the district’s residents to have their say, it being likely to be two years before the proposed scheme is incorporated into the HDPF, followed by the lengthy design and appeals process leading to the formal application for planning permission. This year the Horsham District has benefited from an extraordinary increase in new sports facilities - surely unlikely to be
emulated in any other town: The Bridge Leisure Centre, Horsham Football Club, Southwater Sports Club, and Broadbridge Heath Football Club, in addition to the superb new ‘all weather’ pitch and changing room complex at Horsham Rugby Club, and the recently installed artificial multisport amenity at Christ’s Hospital School. When the new home for Horsham Football Club was mooted for the Horsham Golf & Fitness site, much concern was expressed
about increased traffic on the narrow, busy and fast moving Worthing Road. Generator and Horsham Golf & Fitness seek to counter such worries by proposals to upgrade the junctions of the two existing vehicular access points to the site, with potential for improvements to the Hop Oast roundabout, along with the possibility of a fifth arm coming into the site from the roundabout, a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists over the A24, and the suggestion of secondary/

Horsham District #OceanBombed with colourful environmental messages
Earlier this month, Horsham District was bombarded with environmental art and activity. Volunteers from the Horsham Repair Café and Sussex Green Living, an environmental awareness and educational network, provided a dazzling array of ‘environmentally friendly’ stalls at their second Share, Care and Repair Fair, this year within Horsham Market. It was part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 and Horsham Festival. In the run up to this unique Fair nineteen locations - shops, salons, sportscentre, Horsham library and the Carfax bandstand, had surprize eco ocean art installed with environmental messages, plus a display at the Fair. This Community Eco Ocean Art project, sponsored by Biffa, was the brainchild of the founder of Sussex Green Living Carrie Cort. Carrie said: “People are so worried about plastic pollution and the plight of the planet, I thought this would be fun for anyone of any age to get creative around communicating the problems and solutions. “Their art had to be made of unwanted materials or acrylic wool. Acrylic wool is a problem because it is synthetic, plastics, which means it will take decades to completely break down”. Pam Tedder, one of the Horsham Repair Café volunteers, co-ordinated the yarn or ocean bombing of the Carfax bandstand. Pam said: “It was a wonderful intergenerational community project. Predominately, the contributions for the bandstand were from the Horsham Normandy WI, supported by knitters from Broadbridge Heath, Horsham North Heath, Roffey Greenfields and Mannings Heath WI Groups, plus a Knit and Natter group, friends and a year two child from Kingslea School even
knitted a fish. “The WI, of course, are well known for yarn bombing”. The Share, Care and Repair Fair was opened by Councillor Kate Rowbottom and Jeremy Quin MP who acknowledge the urgent and important work of these environmental voluntary groups. Kate, the new Chairperson of Horsham District Council, told the crowds that Horsham District Council are discussing the possibility of 2020 being a Horsham District Year of Green Action. The Fair included a pop-up Horsham Repair Cafe, Sussex Green Living’s sustainable fashion display, upcycled craft stall, advice on climate action and switching to clean energy, the South East Climate Alliance stand. Plus WSCC Waste Prevention Team, Marine Conservation Society, Wikaniko, Fairtrade Horsham, Tropic World and Earthkind ‘plastic free pantry’ offering dry, loose and organic food. The Horsham based English folk dancers Magog provided colourful and joyous music and dancing. A Community Eco Ocean Art Trail was launched with 19 public locations, 14 in Horsham, 3 in Billingshurst, 1 at Bluecoats Sports at Christs Hospital and 1 in Southwater. Members of the public are invited to visit all the art installations, collecting a letter displayed on the art trail posters (the bandstand is a green heart rather than a letter), unscramble the letters into three eco words, email to cort@sussexgreenliving.co.uk, certificates for all participants and a box of green living goodies will go to one name pulled out of the hat. New Horsham History Book hits the shelves What have Lord Haw-Haw, Neville Duke, Catherine Howard, Barnes Wallis and Percy Bysshe Shelley all got in common? Answer: They are all connected with Horsham and feature in the new book, A-Z of Horsham. Horsham has had many visits from esteemed guests, royalty and foreign dignitaries over the centuries. Many famous and infamous faces have made their appearance here at one time or another. For instance, did you know that the King of Belgium had a secret holiday in Horsham in 1935 and actually stayed at a house in Broadbridge Heath? Did you know that Barnes Wallis was a student at Christ’s Hospital, or that the town’s first swimming pool was opened by an African king? Did you know that Langhurst Wood was, and still remains, a secret government research facility? During the Second World War it was used as a flame warfare research establishment and became one of the first places in the country to test rockets. The flame-throwing Crocodile tank, put to effective use on D-Day, was developed here, as was the very key to D-Day’s success – Operation PLUTO, or Pipe Line Under The Ocean. Langhurst also played a role in dealing with one of the UK’s worst ecological disasters – the Torrey Canyon oil spill in 1967. The Home Office later took over another nearby site where such diverse things as nuclear shelters, body armour and crowd-control fences have been developed and tested. In 2018 this site was merged with the
notorious lab at Porton Down. In contrast to this breaking-edge technology, Horsham magistrates once had a reputation for medieval-style punishment. Until 1844 the town was home to the Sussex County Gaol and the justices used to inflict harsh sentences for minor offences. Did you know that a small debt could result in life imprisonment? Did you know that Horsham was the last place in the country to use the peine forte et dure (pressing to death), that the town was still burning women at the stake in 1776, that some of the first public dissections were carried out in Horsham, or that being dragged around the Carfax and whipped ‘till ye body be bloody’ was quite commonplace? Did you know that the last instance of whipping for a crime committed at Horsham was as recently as 1930? Did you know that World Cup-winning bowler, Jofra Archer, played for Horsham Cricket Club, and that the Club is built on the site of Horsham Barracks? Did you know that many soldiers from here were imprisoned for such diverse crimes as highway robbery and killing a smuggler? The answers to all these and more are revealed in the new book, A-Z of Horsham: People-PlacesHistory by Eddy Greenfield. The book is not a street atlas or visitor guide, nor is it a bland gazetteer of what can be seen and where. No, it uses each letter of the alphabet to relate a different aspect of Horsham’s long and fascinating history from the prehistoric Horshamosaurus to the recent earthquakes of 2018/2019. The book strips back
the visible façade of this ancient market town and uncovers what lies beneath – often hidden in plain sight. It unearths the unusual and long-forgotten stories to present a history that will fascinate from start to finish. It begins with A for Acid Bath Murders and ends with Z for Zany Buildings, with many stories of plague, corruption, POW camps, witchcraft, spy scares, air raids and flying bombs, workhouses, royalty, UFOs and the supernatural, weird weather, cruel crimes, unusual punishments and much, much more in-between, revealing many facts and anecdotes that have hitherto remained untold in other books on Horsham. Even familiar town landmarks harbour their own secrets. If you think you know Horsham, this book may yet surprise you! A-Z of Horsham by Eddy Greenfield is available now at Waterstones, W. H. Smith and online at Amazon or direct from the publishers – Amberley Publishing. Eddy Greenfield is a Sussex-based author and historian. He has spent over a decade researching the places and people of Sussex, with a particular interest in discovering the lesser-known and long-forgotten stories hidden within the county’s eventful past. He was born in the county and has lived and worked in and around the Horsham District ever since. He has previously written a number of articles for publications in the Sussex area, but this is his first book with Amberley Publishing. He is currently researching and writing his next book, Secret Arundel, which is due for publication with Amberley Publishing in spring 2020.

Horsham lawyer urges hols caution post Brexit
With summer holidays now well under way many people’s thoughts are turning to booking autumn breaks or even their 2020 summer getaway. Whilst holidaymakers in the EU before October 31st should see no difference in laws and policies around health treatment overseas, Nigel Cragg, Mancini Legal’s Head of Personal Injury, is advising caution post Brexit. ‘Currently Britain’s policy for

reciprocal health arrangements align with those throughout the European Community,’ he says. ‘The problem, especially in the case of a hard Brexit, will be that the UK will need to arrange individual new treaties with every single country.’ This summer sees no real changes although another concern raised by Cragg, who has extensive experience in helping holidaymakers claim for personal injury such as food poisoning, contracting illness and road traffic accidents whilst overseas, is the possibility that leaving the EU could complicate the legal situation. ‘Brexiteers are keen to make the point that they want their laws to be UK laws,’ he explains. ‘That’s fine all the time you’re in the UK – but if an injury or illness happens overseas when we’ve left the EU there could be complications over how the case can be pursued.’ Until we know what actually transpires on October 31st his advice is that if you should fall victim to injury or illness make meticulous notes, take
photographs of the situation on your mobile phone and even use your phone’s voice recorder to get statements from witnesses, medical advisors or representatives of travel companies. Like the majority of personal injury lawyers Mancini Legal offers an initial consultation free of charge and is mostly able to

Storrington Wardens help cub scouts clean up the village Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens for Storrington and Sullington, Chris Poore and Andy Cotton recently helped their local cub scouts to get some litter picking equipment to help them keep their village litter free. Chris said: “We were recently impressed with our local 1st Sullington & Storrington Cub Scouts when we saw them clearing litter from around the village pond. They had very little proper equipment and were picking the litter by hand. “We contacted Horsham
District Council’s Waste and Recycling team and signed up the scouts to the Council’s Adopt-a-Street Scheme. “They now have gloves, hi-vis jackets, bags, t-shirts and litter pickers to help them carry on the good work.” Ian Brown, Assistant Cub Scout Leader, added: “We are grateful to the Neighbourhood Wardens for arranging the litter picking equipment. garden. The supply of fresh fruit and vegetables will also be enjoyed by residents and the local community. Devendra Lallchand, home manager at Skylark House, said: “We’re so pleased to have joined forces with Wildly Kind and to create this wonderful garden for us and the local community to enjoy. “Spending time outdoors, and connecting with nature around us, can prove to be beneficial for both the physical and mental wellbeing of older people – particularly those living with dementia. While it is a calming, peaceful activity, the distinctive sounds and vibrant colours of the garden are also great for providing sensory stimulation for residents.” Skylark House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as shortterm respite and palliative care. Swan Walk’s 2019 Cancer Research UK Donation Station, which ran in the centre between 2 and 19 May, collected an incredible 1,267 bags of donated clothes, homewares and books from customers who collected a bag from the Donation Station on the mosaic and returned it when they were next shopping in Horsham. The total stock value to Cancer Research UK is £39,277 and dona-

Gill Buchanan, Centre Manager, said: “This is the 11th year that Swan Walk has run this community event and more than £219,000 has now been raised overall, an incredible number. Roll on 2020, when the total could top a quarter of a million pounds. “The event would not be the success that it is without the support of Victoria Godfrey and her team from Cancer Research UK’s East Street store and of course our loyal and supportive customers.”

Neighbourhood Warden rescues distressed dog Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Warden, Chris Poore, was recently hailed a hero after rescuing a distressed dog from a car. The Storrington & Sullington warden had been alerted by the police that someone had reported a Tibetan terrier was in a locked car in the library car park and was showing signs of distress. The police were on their way, but would take a while to arrive and so asked Chris to help. Chris rushed to the scene and found that the car windows were only partly open and that the longhaired dog was slumped in the footwell, panting heavily. After trying unsuccessfully to
locate the owner, and realising that he needed to act quickly, Chris squirted water from his water bottle through the top of the window and drenched the dog in an attempt to cool it down. He then managed to gain access to the car via the open window. A local vet was already on the scene and took the dog back to his clinic to be checked over. When the dog’s owner arrived back at the car he was talked to by the police, who by then had arrived. Chris said: “Thankfully, the dog was unharmed and was feeling much better after having some water and cooling down. However, this story may not have had such
a happy ending. “This is a timely reminder to keep animals cool and hydrated in hot weather, and never to leave them unattended in a car on a warm day. “I’m just relieved that someone reported it to the library staff and the police, and that I was able to get to the dog in time.” RSPCA guidance states that it can quickly reach unbearable temperatures inside a car on a warm day and dogs will not be able to cool themselves down, even with a window open. If anyone sees a dog in distress in a hot car, they should call 999 immediately. The police may also ask the RSPCA to attend if animal welfare is required.

Horsham District Council’s Pulborough Neighbourhood Wardens, Carol Boniface and Vanessa Green, were delighted to be able to access funding for Pulborough Village Hall to buy a portable loud speaker to use in the venue. Many of Pulborough’s older residents attend talks and seminars there and were finding it difficult to hear properly. Manager Denise Newson commented: “The portable system can be used in any of the halls
and will make a huge difference to members attending now. It is a huge asset to the village hall and we hope to get many years use out of it.” The funding was obtained from the Police Property Act Fund which uses proceeds of crime to pay for community related projects to help support residents. port and care for children with life limiting conditions, by announcing to the group that he was going to have a full body wax! The members of BNI Achievers fully supported the challenge as part of their groups drive to give something back to the communities they work in, and leaflets were designed by Sam Elsden from Beest Creative before being printed by JR Print free of charge, in order to
promote the challenge further. The group then used the power of networking to spreading the word to a wide range of local business groups. Jayne Todd, Community Fundraiser at Chestnut Tree House said, “We are so grateful to Chris for taking on this fantastic challenge. We need to raise £6,850 every day to pay for all our specialist care services, and without people like Chris we simply wouldn’t be able to continue helping local children with life-shortening conditions and their families. I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported and sponsored him.” Debbie put Chris at ease before commencing the two hours of waxing, with Jayne Todd & Katy Finlay from Chestnut Tree House along with Sarah McNeil from Chiropratical in Billingshurst who was involved in the inception of the plan, being on hand to give moral support and to try not to laugh too much! Having completed, and at times endured the task, Chris said “The evening was full of laughter and the worst part was probably the anticipation of that first strip being done. Yes, it did hurt, but was tolerable for the brief period it lasted each time. However, as the evening wore on it did get harder.” The evening passed in high spirits, with Debbie providing the team with a welcome glass of cold bubbly to celebrate at the end.

Botanical art, the beautifully exquisite celebration of the natural world blending art and science in technical and artistic perfection, is a challenging and demanding art form. The ancient market town of Horsham has been the home of some of this country’s leading exponents who have not only developed the eye, brush and palette, but have inspired a new generation of local artists. Now, in 2019, coming together to create the stunning exhibition Garden of Botanical Art at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, celebrating the work of nine artists they have agreed to work, inform and collaborate to promote and develop this wonderful art form. Horsham born, Jill Coombs, the doyenne of the School, has been perfecting the art for over forty years, creating award winning floral portraits that have captivated collectors from around the world as
well as being acquired by the leading botanical organisations. Jill’s work can be seen in the Dr Shirley Sherwood Collection, The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, The Royal Horticultural Society, Chelsea Physic Garden and the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. The Royal Horticultural Society has also awarded Jill the Gold medal three times for her watercolours. Jill has also produced paintings for the Highgrove Florilegium, for The Prince of Wales Trust set up to record plants in Highgrove Gardens. Jill’s enthusiasm and teaching ability inspired other artists to take up the challenge, including Storrington based artist Suzanne Merrikin who has been awarded the Silver Gilt by the Royal Horticultural Society for her watercolours. Leigh Ann Gale, who was awarded medals by the RHS and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in
Cape Town, South Africa, not only teaches and practises her art, but has also put pen to paper writing highly regarded books to guide the novice to achieve more. Leigh Ann’s work is held in the permanent collection at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, USA, The Florilegium Society at Sydney Botanic Gardens, Hampton Court Palace Archives, Nymans Florilegium, and private collections. One of her students is the talented and modest Hazel Barnard who is also a member of the School. Linda Lasham and Heather Glenny are two other talented members of the school, which also includes award winning artist and tutor Alice Harman from Steyning who has been awarded silver-gilt and two silver medals from the Royal Horticultural Society as well as being a fellow member of the Society of Botanical Artists. All of
their works are held in museums and private collections. The School, whilst focusing on the watercolour, is open to members who exhibit the high standard of botanical artists but in a different medium. Deborah Crago uses pencil to capture the scientific and artistic quality that botanical art encourages, whilst Eleanor Coate has the distinction of being awarded a Gold medal from the Royal Horticultural Society for her photographic portraits of flowers and also achieved the Associate Distinction from the Royal Photographic Society with a panel of these botanical prints. The photographs deliberately follows the tradition of 17th and 18th century botanical art; a tradition that Horsham School of Botanical art celebrates in the 21st century. A Garden of Botanical Art at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery opened on 6 July and runs until 14 September 2019. Part of the Horsham District’s Year of Culture, it not only celebrates the outstanding botanical art of these nine artists, but also the rich heritage of gardens and horticulture. To accompany the exhibition, a calendar featuring the exquisite art will be produced as a legacy of the exhibition and available to purchase from the Museum throughout its run. The exhibition is the first flowering of the School, which will grow and flourish as the artists collaboratively work to create a deeper, richer and nuanced understanding of a stunning art that glorifies flora.

Legislation you need to know before letting your property
Courtlands, Southwater
It’s fair to say aspiring landlords have a lot to consider before deciding whether to rent out a property, with mounting regulation they need to remain compliant or risk heavy fines. Landlords are already required, by law, to ensure the following:
3. Client Money Protection
• Tenant deposits are protected within the correct timescale
All lettings agents, since April 2019, been required to register with a Client Money Protection (CMP) scheme. Agents who hold client money are required to have indemnity insurance, appropriate CMP procedures and display the CMP certificate. While this provides tenants and landlords with a layer of protection when it comes to their money, knowing what to look out for when engaging a letting agent is key.
• Statutory documents are served to the tenant before a tenancy begins
4. Energy Efficiency requirements
• Tenants satisfy Right to Rent criteria • Furniture and furnishings are compliant with fire safety regulations • Smoke and Co2 alarms are installed in the correct places and working • Relevant appliances pass annual Gas Safety checks
Here are five key pieces of legislation recently introduced that landlords should be aware of... 1. Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation Act) 2018 From 20th March 2019, tenants have the legal right to take direct action against their landlords under the Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS). Previously, the local authority could issue a notice to landlords if a rental property was deemed to be unfit. But now tenants will be able to take their landlord to court if any identified failings have not been rectified. 2. Tenant Fees Act 2019 The Tenant Fees Act will have a profound effect on landlords cashflow from June this year. With lettings agents no longer permitted to charge tenants fees it is likely landlords will face additional costs when re-letting their properties for services such as referencing, inventories, check-ins and check-outs.
Martin & Co Horsham
Envision House • 5 North Street Horsham • RH12 1XQ horsham@martinco.com
Regulations on Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) came into force in April 2018. That meant landlords renting out properties with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of below E were unable to legally let those homes. The criteria that allowed a property to be exempt have been restricted. Landlords with properties below the E rating must now make recommended changes up to a cost of £3,500 before they can consider applying for an exemption.
Modern detached house in an exclusive cul-de-sac location in Southwater. Greatly improved by the current owners to offer a well-balanced family space. Three good size bedrooms, the master with en-suite shower room. Front and rear gardens and parking for several vehicles. Guide Price: £550,000
Vale Drive, Horsham
5. Immigration Act 2014 Since 2016, landlords and lettings agents have been required by law to check each tenant’s right to rent property in the UK. Introduced as part of the Immigration Act 2014, landlords or agents who fail to perform the checks, or keep documented evidence of the evidence of the checks, can face fines of up to £3,000 per tenant. Although the High Court ruled that the Act breaches human rights, the legislation is still in place for now. We’ve outlined key legislation here, but there are many more legal obligations landlords need to be aware of. The best way to ensure you are compliant is to speak to the Martin & Co Horsham office just off the Carfax who will be able to offer advice.

Horsham’s super new football home opens in style !
Photos by John Lines
Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s new Hop Oast ground – The Camping World Community Stadium – is well and truly up and running ! The long, long – 11 year - wait for a new home is finally over. The former Queen Street ground was cozy and it is always a little sad to say goodbye to an old friend with so many happy memories, but Horsham’s new base, the result of much hard work to transform a derelict overgrown field, is truly spectacular, and will surely be the envy of visiting teams. There has been much attention to detail, Horsham FC’s Commercial Director Paul Osborn telling the District Post: “We’re absolutely delighted with what has been created, there is nothing that we wished we’d done differently and I can’t think of any better non league facility. This is a major asset for the town.” The whole ambiance is welcoming on entering the clubhouse into the large bright and airy clubroom

overlooking the state of the art artificial pitch. Amply seated with a well-stocked bar, the clubroom has large, strategically-placed TVs showing all major sporting events, access to the impressive kitchen and to the committee room. And, the male and female dressing rooms and physio area are also well-appointed, along with the adjacent club shop. Outside, the modular, extendable stands are installed, including disabled access, and signage is up around the ground. The pitch, sheltered by surrounding trees, is already seeing plenty of activity, with Crawley Town using it for training four mornings a week, following which they enjoy lunches prepared by chef Heinz Schiffer, using high quality local produce – the entire arrangement being much-liked by the Red Devils. Adjacent to the main pitch there is the play and practice pitch hire amenity, already proving very popular, with, on Sundays, breakfasts preceding football matches, follow-
ing which the bar is open, Paul Osborn commenting: “This is a fantastic year round facility for youth teams and other groups, which we feel will advance skill levels and produce players on a feeder system into our senior side. And, through our newly established link with Crawley Town we shall be able to arrange loans from them, to the mutual benefit of both clubs.” In addition to the parking arrangements at the Hop Oast Park & Ride facility, the Club are hoping to finalise additional local arrangements with transport for supporters to the new ground – details to be announced. Chelsea FC coaches ran wellreceived sessions at the Club in June and function bookings are already in place – there will be a business exhibition in October and, next month Patrick Marber’s play Red Lion will be performed as part of Horsham District Council’s Year of Culture programme (the action being set in the dressing room of a smalltown soccer club aspiring promotion, exposing and exploring battles between the conniving manager, the long serving, devoted kit man and a young player with a troubled background – see https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=JTNM947D8gI) Meanwhile, everything at the new stadium, managed by Kevin Baxter, with support from his assistant, Annie Raby, is in place, Chairman Kevin Borrett enthusing: “These are extremely exciting times for Horsham Football Club and our loyal supporters. We have all waited a long time, but we now have exactly what we want, expect and deserve!” Horsham CEO John Lines added: “To have our own ground after 11 nomadic years is absolutely the most wonderful feeling!” Wisely, Horsham Football Club has not rushed to open the new facilities, preferring to ensure that everything is fully operational before the official opening this Saturday when, returning to their own home after 11 nomadic years, the Hornets play Division 2 neighbours Crawley Town, kick off 3pm. It is NOT envisaged that tickets will be sold on the day, with pre-purchase – CASH ONLY - available from Horsham Football Club, Hop Oast, Worthing Road, Horsham RH13 0AX - 01403 458854 email admin@horshamfc.co.uk. Paul Osborn summed up saying: “It is set to be a jubilant atmosphere so make sure you don’t miss out - buy your tickets now - we look forward to welcoming you into our new home!”
Talented Horsham Pupil joins Harlequins Academy full-time While most 18-year-olds will be enjoying a well-earned rest over the summer holidays, Christ’s Hospital pupil Lennox Anyanwu will instead be training hard, following the exciting announcement that he is joining Harlequins Academy ahead of the new 2019-20 season. Lennox, who has been part of Harlequins’ Elite Player Development Group (EPDG), will now be part of the club on a full-time basis, based at Surrey Sports Park. Lennox was selected to play for England at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 18 level. He went on tour to South Africa with the Under 18 squad, playing the likes of South Africa, France and Wales; he is one of four young players making the step up into the full time Academy. “It is the culmination of seven years of hard work. It’s not often you set a goal and see it through,” says Lennox. “I have a lot to thank the School for. It was the former Head Coach that put my name forward for Harlequin’s Development Player Programme (DPP).” As the first ever recipient of the Christ’s Hospital Joe Launchbury Rugby Scholarship, it is especially fitting that Lennox is following in Joe’s footsteps. Joe Launchbury, who plays rugby for Wasps and England, is also a former Christ’s Hospital pupil. He left CH in 2009 and often finds time in his busy
schedule to drop in for surprise visits to his old school to inspire and enthuse the CH rugby players. “Having a strong network around me at Christ’s Hospital has been fantastic,” explains Lennox. “I wouldn’t have improved at the rate I did without it; the staff have played an important part of my development. From an early age, I was pushed to play a year up. “My mum hates rugby,” he laughs. “She only watched a game for the first time a few months ago and we never talk about it at home. In a way, that’s nice as it means I can switch off! “Since exams finished, a few of my friends have been out enjoying themselves. But I’ve been training every day. So, I’m making sacrifices now as I’m thinking about the long-term reward.” Director of Rugby at Christ’s Hospital Ian Davies: “Lennox has worked fantastically hard to achieve his contract with Harlequins. It was not an easy task to balance academic studies with rugby commitments, but he had an excellent support network through the CH/Quins partnership. Lennox has just started preseason, so will be working hard on his fitness and core skills, but I hope he will visit us early next term to inspire the next generation of boys and girls playing rugby at CH”.

Hastings 30 points - Billingshurst 9 points Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter Prior to this game Hastings were top and Billingshurst 2nd and, in May at Horntye Park, Billingshurst had bowled out Hastings for 140 to win a low scoring game. So, the stage was set for a telling encounter, but this time Hastings extracted revenge to extend their lead at the top of the table while Billingshurst slipped to fourth, albeit one point behind third-placed St James’s Montefiore, who also lost on Saturday after being dismissed for 80 by new runner up Haywards Heath. After being set 315 to win off a possible 51 overs Billingshurst mounted a serious challenge, even from 110-6, with a 90 run stand from Max Hollander (83) and Andy Barr (38), and on another day 269 would have been a winning total. Hastings won the toss and had no hesitation in taking first strike on a perfect batting day, and Billingshurst soon tasted success, Barr accounting for wicketkeeper Joe Billings from an outstanding diving catch by keeper Josh Wood, who put in another accomplished display. But, fellow opener – Aussie overseas player Ricardo de Nobrega – was the difference between the sides, with
a highly impressive 153 from 127 balls, Billingshurst being made to pay for dropping him twice. Hastings skipper Elliot Hooper, and Ryan Hoadley scored excellent fifties, 47 fours being struck by Hastings over the lightning-fast ground as Billingshurst maintained attacking fields while pressing for wickets. Five bowlers shared the spoils, Chairman Jon Alexander pulling off a memorable, Stokesque high overhead catch. In reply, five upper order Billingshurst batsmen started well, Jordan Willoughby and evergreen Scott Stratton making thirties, but once the Hollander and Barr partnership was broken, too much remained to be done, Adam Barton finishing with 5-78, Billingshurst skipper Ben Mortimer telling the District Post: “They batted very well and giving their main man a couple of lives didn’t help, but we gave it our best shot, pushing them hard.” On Saturday Billingshurst travel to Ifield, who were relegated from the Premiership last season, and after the departure of some key players, are now bottom, losing heavily last Saturday. In May, at home, Billingshurst bowled them out for 95, going on to win by 3 wickets. August 11th will be another red letter day at Billingshurst Jim Burroughs’ Presidents Day with two T20 games, starting at 11am with The Vet’s XI v Shaka Shambrook’s XI, then, after lunch, with BBQs in full flow, Mike Burroughs will skipper his father’s President’s Invitation team against Billingshurst, ensuring another popular day at the pleasant Jubilee Fields setting.

though, to their credit, Lindfield amassed 194. Roffey skipper Matt Davies told the District Post: “Ben and Rohit were superb – Ben was a good player last year, but he’s gone up a notch this season - and once we’d got the best part of 250 we thought we were safe, although their IPL player was clearly a threat, three hundreds in a T20 game was something special! Having got so many runs, there was the opportunity to let some of our bowlers get some overs under their belt.” Roffey won the Sussex Cup for the first time in 2017, and narrowly lost to East Grinstead with the scores level in controversial circumstances in last year’s Final, denying them the opportunity to compete again against other county cup winners in the National T20 competition. They are eager to put that right this season, but first they have to overturn Horsham in the Semi Final at Roffey on Sunday August 11th Last Sunday was also a good day for Roffey seconds – in the Quarter Final of the Sussex T20 Trophy they beat Brighton & Hove after bowling them out for 116, Tom Barnes taking 4-17 and Fred Bridges and Mark Pavlovic two apiece. Then Roffey knocked off the runs for the loss of just one wicket with more than four overs to spare, Pavlovic rounding off his great all round game with 43, while Anish Padalkar made 39 – both unbeaten. In the semi final Roffey 2s will play RMU at Preston Nomads, also on August 11th.
Will Beer thrilled with another Sussex contract
Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Will Beer – Sussex’s all-time leading T20 wicket taker - is understandably delighted to have signed a new contract with the county, marking 13 years as a professional with Sussex, who are equally pleased. Will has been firmly on Sussex’s radar for more than 20 years, beginning when he led the county’s under 10 side. 31 in October, Will went on to cut his teeth at Horsham Cricket Club – following in the footsteps of both his father Andy and his uncle, Robin – and still plays for the town side whenever
his Sussex commitments allow. Leg-spinner Will, a rare commodity in today’s game, has made 187 first team performances in all formats, with approaching 200 wickets and over 1,000 runs in addition to captaining the 2nd XI on numerous occasions. After progressing through county age group cricket, Will impressed for England U19s, taking 10 economical wickets against New Zealand. Also in 2009, he came to the fore with a gutsy performance on T20 finals day, helping Sussex to lift the trophy. He has also bowled well in other big matches, and, in an all too rare appearance in the longer game, Will took 6-29 against the South African tourists
at Arundel. Speaking of his new deal, right hand bat Will said: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract with my home club. Cricket is moving in a really exciting direction and I am thrilled to be a part of that with Sussex. Hopefully we can finish this season strongly with promotion still up for grabs and the T20 Blast on the horizon and take a lot of momentum into the 2020 season.” A previous Sussex Team Man of the Year, Will’s award citation read: “Although Will’s first team opportunities have been limited, he has never let the team down with either bat or ball whenever called upon – he always puts the needs of the team above everything else and he is commended for his demeanour around the dressing room, his unfailing willingness to help his teammates with their preparation, and for consistently going above and beyond what is expected of him.” This year has been a good one for Will, especially with the bat, beating both his One Day and Championship best scores with a matchwinning 75 against Essex and, as an opener, 97 versus Durham at Arundel, he has also scored centuries for the county 2nd XI, and for Horsham, too, Sussex Head Coach Jason Gillespie sums up Will Beer’s new contract saying: “I’m very pleased that Beero has agreed to sign a new contract with us. Even as an experienced professional, he’s shown real signs of improvement – particularly with his batting – over the last 12 months. Will’s been a very good servant of the club for a number of years and we’re delighted that he’ll carry on doing that for the next few years.”

Two Horsham players in World Cup Final
Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter
Two former Horsham players were ranged against each other on the biggest stage of all last Sunday – at Lord’s in the World Cup Final, where Jofra Archer played for England and Matt Henry for New Zealand – Archer bowling Henry for four before being entrusted to deliver the dramatic Super Over after Henry

had captured the prized scalp of England’s Jason Roy. Barbados born 24 year old Archer was Horsham’s overseas player in 2016 – until he was signed up by Sussex after impressing for the county 2nd XI. After an excellent debut for Sussex against Pakistan he became a regular member of the first team, controversially earning him an England call up after the qualification period was reduced from seven to three
years. For England, his raw pace is a much-valued asset – along with his forceful batting - as it is in both the IPL and Aussie Big Bash. While Henry, a right arm fast medium bowler from Christchurch New Zealand, spent the 2011 season with Horsham as a 19 year old. He subsequently began his First Class career with Canterbury in his home country, going on to make his Test debut against England at Lord’s in 2015. Henry then had spells with Worcestershire in 2016 and Derbyshire the year after that and has played 10 Tests, 51 ODIs and 6 International T20s, too. He, also, has had an IPL contract and had a brilliant season for Kent last year, playing no small part in their promotion to Division 1 of the County Championship. Speaking of the remarkable milestone of having two of the Club’s players in the World Cup Final, Horsham President Barry Peay told the District Post: “Surely there is no other club in England who has had two former overseas players appearing at Lords (in the same match)?” And, Barry fondly remembers Matt Henry’s time at Horsham Cricket Club, saying: “I met him through our Thursday XI, where he made a good team member as a very personable young man. I’m glad he’s done well.”
Premier League round up – matches on Saturday July 13th Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter At East Grinstead, perhaps wary of their recent batting difficulties, the hosts defied the trend on a batting day by inserting mid table Middleton, bowling them out for 224 off 55 overs. Mahesh Rawat again impressed, but this time was denied another century when he was run out on 99 by Will Adkin, William Taylor taking 5-30. Then, Grinstead’s batting did not let them down, former Billingshurst opener Tom Haynes top-scoring with 91, Grinstead winning by 6 wickets in good time, placing them 4th Sixth in the table Three Bridges opted to bat first at their ground, and declared on 280-7, Adam Jones making an unbeaten 79, and consistent David Winn 62. Then, Cuckfield, hovering above the relegation zone, reached 41, but subsided to 145 all out

14 year old Sam Henderson rescues Roffey with vital win Saturday July 13 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Mayfield 223 all out (46.2 overs) – Roffey 224-9 (51.5 overs) Roffey won by 1 wicket - Roffey 30 points Mayfield 12 points Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter Newly promoted Mayfield are bottom - 30 points adrift - and reigning champions Roffey are top by 29 points, yet form was very nearly stood on its head last Saturday. Roffey walloped Mayfield at home in May, but it took a fantastic match-winning innings from 14 year old debutant Sam Henderson to deliver a nerve-jangling win for Roffey last Saturday when defeat looked imminent. Current runner up Brighton snatched an unlikely looking victory against Eastbourne, and third-placed Preston Nomads also won, so Roffey needed to win, and at the Wellbrook Ground they elected to field and soon had Mayfield 19-2. But, opener Ben Fitchet from Guernsey was batting fluently
and when his 82 ball innings was terminated by George Fleming (3-66) he had scored 95 out of 141-5, with ten fours and 6 sixes. The next highest score was 26 as Roffey whittled their way through the remainder of Mayfield’s batting, including the prized scalp of Sri Lankan Test cricketer Kaushal Silva, snared for a second ball duck by Rohit Jagota, who finished with 3-48. Considering Roffey’s batting talent, the 224 run target was not daunting, but a succession of cheap dismissals left them facing ignominious defeat at 100-7. Enter Sam Henderson with instructions from skipper Matt Davies to “just enjoy it and back yourself – if you feel you can hit it for four then do it!” And, Sam did hit fours, 14 of them in his undefeated 82 from 89 deliveries. When Mike Norris was out for 58, Sam was on 56 with 36 more runs required and just two wickets remaining. But, batting first with Alex Collins and then Luke Barnard, who rarely gets to the crease but hung in for 19 balls, Sam took responsibility, scoring the bulk of the necessary runs, Roffey winning by 1 wicket after an unbroken partnership of 30, with Barnard ending four not
out. Matt Davies told the District Post: “Mayfield’s 223 shouldn’t have been enough – we were confident, but poor shots by our top order almost undid us - we didn’t respect the opposition. But, Noz (Mike Norris) batted well and then Sam was amazing – so calm at the crease.” As a nine year old, Sam Henderson astounded the local cricket community with 5 wickets in five consecutive balls, a quintuple wicket maiden, but what did he think of his latest achievement? “I was told two days in advance that I’d be playing and was very excited, but going in to bat I was nervous – and in shock because we were in such a poor position, but I just told myself that we’ve got to win the game! It was helpful to be batting with Mike Norris - he was going so well. I know all the team, I train with them every week and that helped, too.” On Saturday Roffey return home to take on Three Bridges, sixth, after two testing games against them earlier in the season, resulting in hard fought wins, in the league and National KO Cup. Then, in a big, tough game on Sunday in the National Roffey travel to Kent League leaders Bexley.
with no batsman exceeding 31, Michael Rose taking 4-26 and Jones 3-36. While, in the title contending game at Brighton’s Nevill Sports Ground, Eastbourne chose to bat, scoring a useful looking 276-9 from their 58 over allocation, thanks to 63 from the always threatening James Hockley, with 14 year old Archie Lenham of the Sussex cricketing dynasty scoring 28, Brighton skipper Matt Machan returning 4-91. Replying, Brighton got off to a shaky start and stuttered to 124-6, but recovered well with 113 from keeper Steven Crosby and 55 from Machan, yet when their 9th wicket went down they were not quite home. But, the tail sneaked them across the line with one wicket left, the defeat leaving last year’s runner up Eastbourne 7th, while Brighton remain second, 29 points behind Roffey.
Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter After a rigorous, nervewracking selection process Horsham’s Tom Clark is thrilled to be chosen for England’s Under 19 squad for the forthcoming Tri Series against India and Bangladesh. 18 last February, Tom is already an experienced cricketer having been on Sussex’s radar for a considerable time – he scored a hundred in Sussex age group cricket as a nine year old, making him what is thought to be the county’s youngest centurian – and he captained the county’s U15 side to win the ECB Royal London Cup, joined the Sussex Academy and went with them to Cape Town, where he made a strong early impression with a Man of the Match award.
More recently, Ardingly educated, left hand bat Tom has been playing for Sussex 2nd XI – and for Horsham whenever his other commitments permit. He tuned up for the Tri Series with 91 at Cricketfield Road, for Horsham against Preston Nomads last Saturday after scoring his maiden Premier League century – 155 not out – against Bexhill as a 16 year old, and he is also a more than useful medium pace bowler. Horsham is very much a family club for the Clarks – older brother Ed play’s and is the Club’s Cricket Manager, Joe also features in Horsham teams, Ollie is keen, but avoids whites, while the boys’ mother Polly works tirelessly in the Club office. The Tri Series means almost a month away, Tom Clark telling the District Post: “First the squad of 16 goes up to Loughborough for pre tournament training, and I’m pleased that the coaches are Jon Lewis and, prior to his new role in Australia, Mike Yardy – I’ve been lucky to work with both of them at Hove. Then, our first game is against much-fancied India at New Road, Worcester (on Sunday July 21st). We stay there to meet Bangladesh before moving on to other venues, including Cheltenham College, Chelmsford and Beckenham and the Final will be at Hove, on Sunday August 11th”.
