Hospice art trail passes 100k mark St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, has already raised more than £100,000 for the local charity. This amazing milestone is thanks to the generosity of 26 local businesses that have each sponsored a heart on the community trail.

..we’re thrilled that everyone can now enjoy the stunning hearts that our artists have been creating in secret for months.. The 26 hearts, which form a trail across Crawley, Horsham, East Grinstead and Reigate, have already begun to wow the public. Each heart is individually designed by a local artist who has their own reason for supporting the trail. Some have been designed by hospice staff, whilst others are inspired by an artist’s personal experience of St Catherine’s care. As people go

around the trail they’ll discover the moving stories behind each heart and its design. The beautiful works are on display in places as varied as church rose gardens, Reigate Hill, shopping centres, train stations and parks. Trail maps, available from St Catherine’s Hospice charity shops, and a free mobile app, are helping people to find the hearts and unlock exclusive rewards along the way. As well as the trail, there are also free, family friendly activities for people to get involved in. These include an origami station in Swan Walk, Horsham. Plus a range of activities in a special HeART to Heart hub on the upper floor of the County Mall Shopping Centre in Crawley. Alongside the main trail, a trail of 11 smaller wire hearts, designed by local children, are on display in community venues. Following the end of the 10 week trail, St Catherine’s will host an exclusive auction where people will have the chance to make a heart theirs forever. This will raise additional, vital funds for the hospice. Hannah Liles, Event Project’s Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “It’s been incredible to see the public reaction to our HeART to Heart trail. And we’re thrilled

that everyone can now enjoy the stunning hearts that our artists have been creating in secret for months. It’s also been fantastic to work alongside so many local businesses. And we’re incredibly grateful for their support. The trail couldn’t have happened

without them. “At the moment, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three terminally ill people in our community. But the money our supporters have raised as part of the heart trail means that in the future, more local people will

6th Annual Riverside Walk with your friendly neigbourhood...

Earlier this month, 320 people of all ages gathered at Horsham Rugby Club to begin a 13-mile trek around Horsham. They had joined the 6th Annual Horsham Riverside Walk, which was started by special guest and Superhero, Spider-Man, using a loud air-horn. Horsham MP, Jeremy Quin, joined the Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Kate Rowbottom, in the excited throng before the start. Mr Quin walked the first six miles before going to his next appointment. About 200 people finished the walk and collected congratulatory certificates. It wasn’t a race or competition, but was seen as a challenge and an opportunity to be exercising outdoors. The organisers had also asked walkers if they would like to obtain sponsorship in order to support the QEII school for pupils with learning difficulties. A free minibus was laid on to take any walkers unable to continue through lack of time or energy (it was a warm day) back to

their cars. The well-established route follows several water courses, including a stretch of the River Arun. It allows rarely seen views of Horsham as it passes through pastures, woods, fields of crops and sites of interest. At Chesworth Farm, the Friends

This is the largest number we have seen on the Annual Walk of Chesworth had set up a refreshment point and opened the nearby toilets. A small band entertained during the lunch break at Warnham Nature Reserve. More refreshments (and toilets) were available at New House Farm, to boost any low energy levels before the pleasant walk through the woods back to the Rugby Club where the bar was open, attracting thirsty walkers. Event chairman, David Searle, said: “This is the largest number

we have seen on the Annual Walk. We were thrilled at the response and the energy of those taking part and thank those who have contributed to The Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee School. “It was a pleasure to see our plans and hopes materialise. The fine weather played a part in the success of the day, but it was our excellent band of volunteers and helpers who took on many responsibilities to ensure a happy outcome. “Through the Horsham Town Community Partnership, the circular route has been improved over the last six years with better signage, seats and surfaces to make it accessible every day of the year. Our aim was to establish and advertise the Walk as a local feature, making a lasting difference for heritage, individuals and the community. That target has been achieved. “Since Saturday, we have received many messages thanking us for arranging the event. We are grateful for that support and very glad that so many enjoyed their day.”

Improving your life with Horsham District Wellbeing

News Martin Read - Sports Reporter Residents of our district are fortunate to live in a pleasant, healthy environment with the absence of city pollution, and many opportunities for sport and fitness activities. Yet, we are not immune to the perils of busy screen-dependant 21st century lives, undermining physical wellbeing. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions, and the Horsham area has not escaped this. The Health Survey for England 2016 estimated that 26.2% of adults

in England are obese and a further 35.2% are overweight – unsurprisingly, considering our more sedentary lifestyles, and the preponderance of fast food outlets and ready meals loaded with unhealthy content. The health risks from obesity include heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems, high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood cholesterol and significantly increased likelihood of diabetes. And, the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition reports that poor diets pose an even greater risk to our health than alcohol, tobacco and drugs

- critical though the latter three aspects are – enhancing the threat of anaemia, coronary heart disease and cancers. Processed foods may be tasty, but they are often laden with sugar, salt and saturated fats, and although full of calories, they tend to be low in nutritional value. But, fear not, help is at hand – the Horsham District Wellbeing Service is here to get us back on track! Horsham District Wellbeing, run in partnership with Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council, provides a wide ranging programme and practical, non-judgemental and highly supportive advice regarding healthy eating, being active and social, alcohol consumption, smoking, falls prevention and wellbeing at work, with the service working closely with local businesses to improve the health of the workforce. Wellbeing MOTs are also available, as are free courses on the following topics: ‘Get Active’, ‘Strength & Balance’ and ‘Weight Loss’. There is also pre-diabetes assistance and a Directory of Services for older people. The Wellbeing service is happy to supply valuable guidance and information on a wealth of health-related matters. Wellbeing MOTs are carried out with a Body Composition Monitor, which uses electrical resistance to calculate what the body is made up

of. You can find out your weight, percentage of fat and muscle, bone and fat mass, hydration level, metabolic age and visceral fat rating. The body mass index is also indicated, with all of the information obtained giving a picture of the general health of the subject. A Wellbeing Adviser explains and discusses the results and works with the individual to identify if there are any areas which they would like to improve, setting some small manageable goals which they can review at a later date. The Horsham District Wellbeing service is entirely free and is operated by a dedicated friendly team based in the Council’s Parkside building. Individuals can contact Horsham Wellbeing directly by phone, email, via a contact form on the website – www.horshamdistrictwellbeing.org.uk - or be referred by a health professional. And, personal experience confirms that a few simple dietary adjustments really do produce the desired effect – painlessly! This is a golden opportunity to get fitter and healthier! Harlequins bring Summer holiday Rugby camps

Leading Premiership Rugby club Harlequins is giving children in Horsham the chance to embrace the dirt in the summer holidays, as two of its Community Rugby Camps come to town. The first camp will be hosted at Horsham Rugby Club on 19 August - 20 August, a two-day all-girl Foundation Girls Camp aimed at 8-15-year-olds. It offers school-aged girls the opportunity to experience the game, develop their skills and make friends in the supportive environment of a Harlequins affiliate club. This is followed by a two-day Community Camp, again hosted again at Horsham Rugby Club. Hosted on 22 – 23 August, the camp is open to boys and girls aged 6 to 14, regardless of whether they’re new to rugby or a seasoned player. Both camps offer a safe and inclusive environment for children to improve their knowledge of rugby, develop new skills, form friendships and build confidence on and off the pitch.

Children at the camps can expect a mix of small-sided games and technical coaching, all with a game-based approach to make them feel part of a team. All camp content is created in collaboration with the Harlequins Academy, ensuring sessions are tailored for the specific needs of the age group and aligned to the wider Harlequins ethos. What’s more, all attending children will have the opportunity to come to a Harlequins men’s training session at The Stoop during the 2019/20 season and meet the first-team players. Here are five reasons why children in Horsham should be encouraged to try rugby this summer, from Harlequins Community Camps Coordinator, Rob Gould: 1 - Rugby is a game for EVERYONE No matter who you are; where you’re from; whether you’re slow or fast; big or small; male or female - there is a place on the rugby field for you. It’s a sport where everyone

has a role and a way of contributing to the team and no position is more valuable than the other. 2 - You can become a Harlequins Hero One lucky child at the camp will be chosen as the local Harlequins Hero. All 32 camps hosted across the South and South East throughout the Summer will have Harlequins coaches on the lookout for the child that plays the game with the best spirit and most passion and endeavour. The winner will be entered into a grand prize draw alongside the winners from the other camps to win a once-in-alifetime Harlequins VIP experience. 3 - Playing rugby builds confidence Rugby is a sport where everyone has a role, so players feel they belong in the game and allows them to develop into the best person that they can be. This is central to building confidence and translates into life off the pitch too. 4 - The skills you learn on the pitch, translate to the classroom Getting involved in rugby and embracing the dirt this summer can positively impact your child’s studies. Learning a new sport sharpens their concentration and mental awareness, both key to getting better marks at school. 5 - Rugby IS safe Though rugby can be an intense, physical sport at elite level, Harlequins ensure they teach children the game in the safest possible manner and that’s why all of their coaches are at least RFU Level 2 qualified. With this safe and secure environment, children can get the most out of the coaching drills and become the best players possible. To find out more about the Harlequins Community Camps, or to book a place this summer, visit www.rugbycamp.quins.co.uk

School holiday nature clubs with Sussex Wildlife Trust Sussex Wildlife Trust is leading fun-packed outdoor activity days for children across the county throughout the school holidays. From bug-hunting, survival skills, camouflage games, rock-pooling, to arts and crafts from natural materials; there is something for everybody. ‘Wild Woodies’ may join in the muddy minibeast mayhem in the woods, or learn how to light a fire and forage for food. They might dip a net into the pond to explore the weird and wonderful creatures of the underwater world, or sweepnet the grassy meadow for interesting insects; there will be plenty to keep the children happy. Wild Woodies clubs are running at Woods Mill Nature Reserve near

Henfield; Stanmer Park, Brighton; Seven Sisters Country Park near Seaford, Tilgate Park, Crawley, Chesworth Farm near Horsham and Swallowtail Hill Farm near Rye. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult as the clubs are fully supervised. Online booking is essential, for further information on age suitability, activities, times, dates and prices visit: www.sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/holiday-clubs or call 01273 497561. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult as the clubs are fully supervised, so why not enjoy a well-earned rest while they have the time of their lives out in the fresh air!

Top dancer keeps students on their toes Collyer’s students recently learnt to dance basic flamenco with “palmas y jaleos”, with the help of leading professional dancer, Ana Dueñas. Milagros Herguedas, who is Subject Leader for Spanish at Collyer’s, was thrilled: “The students loved working with Ana and thoroughly enjoyed the workshops. I was incredibly impressed that they were able to dance quite a challenging choreography by the end of the sessions! “Ana’s sessions have really helped to give the students a vital insight into Spanish culture, which is something that has been the key to the success of the course. She is an incredibly gifted, inspirational and charismatic dancer, who is always so generous with her time.” Deputy Principal, Steve Martell, said: “Milagros and her students really enjoyed the Flamenco workshops with Ana. Quite a few of us at Collyer’s are actually massive ‘Strictly’ fans, so I it was a great opportunity to have a ‘Strictly Flamenco’ experience right here at college!” Milagros added: “Ana taught students about the essence of flamenco and more importantly

a small choreography. Students learnt that you need to follow some rules, but that doesn’t stop you from expressing your own individuality. It is wonderful to see students getting firsthand experience - Ana was very impressed with how quickly they learnt the steps and hand movements.” Assistant Principal, Andrea John, said: “We have outstanding

Dance and Spanish departments and events like these are what make the educational experience at Collyer’s so special. No wonder students now travel to Collyer’s from across the region! “Big thanks to Ana Dueñas for coming in and sharing her dancing expertise with our students. We are also incredibly grateful to Milagros for organising the event.”

Bluecoat Sports expansion project

Horsham based, Bluecoat Sports Health & Fitness Club have two weeks to go until the Standard Consultation Expiry Date on their planning application. It was announced last month that that they had resubmitted their planning application for exciting new indoor and outdoor fitness facilities. This followed their public consultation in May, where they asked members of the public for feedback on their revised plans. The application went live on the Horsham District Council Planning Portal on Thursday, 6 June and is available for all members of the public to view. The application includes information about the proposed expansion, important dates and comments from members of the public. To see the application itself,

users will need to visit the Horsham District Council Planning website and search for the reference number DC/19/1149. Changes to the application The team behind the project have made several changes to the plans over the last few months following concerns from the public about lighting, noise and traffic. These changes include: Reducing the height of floodlights to keep lighting impact on the surrounding area to a minimum Changing of the light bulbs to programmable LED light fittings to ensure the lighting is easily controllable and focussed, reducing the light spillage across the area Relocating and reducing the levels of the athletics track and adventure trails to move the

development away from nearby roads and homes Implementing a strict schedule for the number, size and duration of events, so as to reduce noise and traffic Proposing further highway works to improve safety and the road network leading to the proposed development Submitting an application to reduce the speed limit around the site from national to 30mph Implementing specific traffic measurements for all events, including marshals and further speed restrictions Supplemental tree planting to strengthen landscape screening For those who would like to find out more about the expansion plans, Bluecoat Sports have a dedicated page on their website with all of the details and updates about the expansion plans and the ongoing application. Further to this, the team have put together a comprehensive list of FAQs to help dispel any myths about the expansion project itself and ensure that everyone in the local community has all the information they need about the project. The new planning application for the expansion project is due to be decided by Wednesday 4 September, giving members of the public 6 weeks to show their support for the expansion project.

Community groups to benefit from a new Horsham District Community Lottery Community groups whose work benefits residents of the Horsham District are being encouraged to sign up to benefit from the new Horsham District Community Lottery. 60p from every £1 ticket will go to charities, voluntary organisations and other good causes whose work benefits Horsham District communities. Players of the lottery can win a £25,000 jackpot, plus smaller prizes. Set up by Horsham District Council, the lottery was launched

to community groups on Wednesday (17 July) by Cllr Tricia Youtan, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing, at an information event in Billingshurst Community Centre. The event was very well attended by almost 60 community groups, all keen to know how they may get involved and benefit from the lottery. Cllr Tricia Youtan encouraged local community groups to join the lottery, and stressed: “This is a really exciting day because it’s all about local charities, the vol-

untary sector and not-for-profit organisations. This is a lottery for the residents of the District.” One of the first groups to join the new lottery was the Billingshurst Community Partnership - a group of volunteers dedicated to delivering projects to enhance the well-being of the town and its surroundings. Denise Campbell, the Partnership’s Chairman, said: “We were keen to support the lottery not only for the benefits it can bring to us as a Partnership but also for the benefit it will bring to our local

community. For small organisations, getting this money is going to make a big difference and will go a long way. “We’d encourage other local good causes to sign up. All you have to do is commit to spreading the word about your own lottery page and reaching a minimum of at least 20 ticket sales”. Supporters will buy the tickets and supporters will choose where 50% of the ticket sales go to. For every £1 ticket sold, 60p goes to good causes – 50p is given to the group nominated by the ticket buyer and 10p to support other good causes within the Horsham District through a fund that will be administered by the council. 20p goes towards prizes and the remaining 20p is for VAT and administration of the lottery. Players have a 50 to one chance of winning one of the prizes, which range from the £25,000 jackpot to three extra tickets.

A lottery management company, Gatherwell, has been appointed to run the scheme, having already launched many similar lotteries elsewhere. Ben Speare, Gatherwell’s Managing Director, said: “We are delighted that Gatherwell has been awarded the opportunity to run the new Horsham District Community Lottery. We’re looking forward to helping support Horsham District’s community groups in partnership with Horsham District Council.” Good causes who want to benefit can register now at: www.horshamdistrictcommunitylottery.co.uk Email: support@horshamdistrictcommunitylottery.co.uk Telephone: 01403 434010 The website is also where residents can buy tickets when the lottery goes live at the end of August.

In these changing times very few businesses can claim that they have provided excellent traditional service for a century – and are still continuing to do so. But, that is the proud achievement of R Rhodes & Son in Billingshurst High Street, Christian Rhodes telling the District Post: “My great grandfather opened the shop in 1919 and the “Son” in the business name is my grandfather!” Rhodes & Son supply

a dual service – the finest shoe repairs and sales, in addition to locksmith solutions. The footwear side of the business also offers well known brands of quality hand made shoes, sandals, boots and super warm, lined Wellingtons for sale, along with accessories, while the locksmith operation incorporates key cutting – including novelty house keys – with a comprehensive range of cylinder and mortice blanks in stock, and a fast local call facility for lock changing, and to deal with lock outs. Christian Rhodes continues: “Originally we were based at the other end of the village, but we have been in our present location since 1934. I took over from my father and my

brother helps out when his other commitments allow, so its still very much a family business, and we are happy to tackle jobs large and small.” Clearly the service delivered is greatly appreciated with comments such as: “I’ve been a regular customer down the years and have always been delighted with the work done for me” and typical Facebook comments are: “The best shop in the village!” and: “Hugely respected family business.” Rhodes & Son’s shop is open six days a week – check the website for times – www.rrhodesandson.co.uk – R. Hall & Woodhouse appoints new Managing Director Hall & Woodhouse, the leading independent family-owned brewer and pub company, has announced the appointment of Matt Kearsey as Managing Director. After ten years in the business, Matt succeeds Anthony Woodhouse to the role, who takes up the position of Chairman. On the subject of his promotion, Matt said: “I am both humbled and excited to be appointed to the role of Managing Director at Hall & Woodhouse. The business has an incredible history, with a dedicated and talented team who are passionate about protecting the company’s legacy and delivering our ambitious plans for the future. I’m looking forward to supporting the team on the next stage of our journey as we build to our 250th birthday in 2027.” Hall & Woodhouse Chairman, Anthony Woodhouse, commented: “Matt Kearsey joined us ten years ago and quickly turned around our tenanted pub division, evolving it into the market-leading Business Partnerships estate we have today. He has subsequently further enhanced our Managed House business which, consequently, has seen a rapid growth in sales and profits. But most importantly, he and his leadership team live and breathe our company values. “With underlying group profits up 17 per cent despite last year’s challenging trading conditions, a brilliant team in place and a clear strategy for the future, I am confident that we will have plenty to celebrate at our 250th birthday in 2027.” Matt worked for Marks & Spencer prior to moving into the brewery and pub industry at Scottish Newcastle and Greene King. His career path through an internal ‘leadership evolution’ programme is testament to Hall & Woodhouse’s commitment to nurturing and developing talent. In 2017, Hall & Woodhouse sent Matt to the USA to complete the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School – an immersive, transformative course to guide senior leaders in honing their lead-

ership capabilities. Matt added: “The leadership team at Hall & Woodhouse see ourselves as custodians, our job is to build on our history and legacy and pass on the business to future generations of team members, guests and shareholders. Being an independent family business means we are free to shape our strategy around long-term benefits rather than quick profit wins. As we’ve been around for 242 years and never been in better shape, this is clearly an approach which benefits the company, our team and the community.” Matt’s appointment coincides with the retirement of long-serving Hall & Woodhouse Directors, David Hoare and Martin Scott, while Mark Woodhouse is stepping down as Chairman and taking up a new role as Family Director. H&W is an independent family company that brews awardwinning Badger ales and runs a collection of 180 beautiful pubs and inns across the south of England. H&W has seven Sussexbased managed pubs including The Black Rabbit in Arundel, The Hornbrook in Horsham, The World’s End in Patching and The Hangleton Manor in Hove. How to attract business from new clients

This month our Award Winning Business expert, Janette Whitney gives advice on attracting new business

janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

I’ll bet you do great work with your clients. But if your clients are the only ones who know what you can do, you won’t stay in business. We all hope that satisfied clients will refer us to their friends and colleagues, but clients aren’t always your best source of referrals. So, we need to let more people know how terrific our work is. There are many ways to let prospective clients know about your work, But for most self-employed professionals, there are only four categories that make sense: networking, speaking,

writing, and media. These are the best avenues for people to become familiar with not only you, but with how your work creates tangible benefits. Networking allows you to make contact with people personally, whether your interaction is in person, on the phone, or online. Networking gives you the opportunity to describe your work to them, and in many cases, let them experience some aspect of it. Speaking can be done live, both in person and virtually on webinars or teleseminars. Or, your speaking can be recorded on video or audio. Speaking allows you to share your work more deeply by demonstrating it or telling stories about it. Writing can be done in a dozen

different forms, from blogging and article-writing to authoring a book or e-book. With writing, it’s possible to make your expertise widely accessible, in print and online. Media and social media allow you to share and publicize all your activities, including your speaking and writing, to a larger audience than you can reach on your own. What each of these approaches has in common is that you must show your work somehow in order to be able to share it easily with others. You can show your work powerfully with the acronym TUG, which stands for: Tangible, Understandable, and Germane. Here’s what I mean: * Tangible - Give specific examples of the results and

benefits of your work which are anchored in physical reality. Saying, “My client saved £1500 on his taxes” makes a tax preparer’s work tangible. “I prepare and file tax returns” does not. * Understandable - Describe what you do in terms that anyone in your target audience can understand. “I write newsletters and employee communications for corporate clients” is understandable. “I’m a communications consultant” is easily misunderstood. * Germane - Relevant to your audience and applicable to common situations they encounter. If you’re a career coach seeking clients who are in job search mode, talking about how to handle tricky interview questions is germane. Sharing approaches for

living a more balanced life, however, would be off target, because it’s not the main area of concern for your ideal prospects. The Red Lion opens at The Capitol, Horsham on Friday 16 August and goes on tour throughout Horsham District for the remainder of August and September. Written by Patrick Marber, directed by Sean Turner and starring Michael Armstrong, Andrew Fettes and local Actor Freddie Hill, it’s a haunting and humorous play about the dying romance of the great English game and the tender, savage love that powers it. The story follows small time semi-pro football, the non-league. A world away from the wealth and the television cameras. A young player touched with brilliance ar-

rives from nowhere. An ambitious manager determines to make him his own and the old soul of the club still has dreams of glory. The Red Lion was first presented in the Dorfman auditorium of the National Theatre, London, on 3 June 2015 and was subsequently revived at The Trafalgar Studios in 2017. This new production is being produced as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture. A hugely entertaining play with great humour, this production has wide appeal to local football players, teams and supporters alike. Freddie Hill (who plays Jordan) trained with the Chichester Festival

Youth Theatre (2014-18) and is a regular both on stage and screen. His theatre credits include Louis the Dauphin (Henry V, Petersfield Shakespeare Festival); Raleigh (Journeys End, Priory Playhouse); Peter (Peter Pan, Chichester Festival Theatre); The Pangolin (Pangolin Puppeteer, Touring); Ray (Citizenship, The Capitol); Arthur (Return To Sender, Minerva, Chichester Festival Theatre). Favourite screen work includes; Riz (High Water, Feature, Ewan Gorman), Tom (Ping Pong, Short, Gemma Norton). This year Freddie rejoins the Petersfield Shakespeare Company for Hamlet.

The Red Lion will be directed by Sean Turner. He trained at the National Theatre and with Complicite. He is also an alumni of The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts and East 15 institutes. He is responsible for unearthing the script of Arthur Miller’s first play, No Villain, which he directed at the Old Red Lion, later transferring to Trafalgar Studios. He has directed the West End and UK Touring productions of the hit comedy The Play That Goes Wrong for three years as well as numerous international productions. Other recent credits include; Talk Radio (Old Red Lion), Nahda (Bush Theatre), The Crucible & Dr Scroggy’s War (ALRA), Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night (all UK tours), Mr Burns (Cockpit Theatre) Boris Godunov (Brockley Jack), Shakespeare’s Lover’s (The Faction). Garnering many 5 star reviews in its previous two outings, this is the ideal piece of theatre for regular play-goers and football fans alike. Taste the fabulous flavours of mediaeval England and dine in style at the Loxwood Joust COMPANION DOG SHOW & LURCHER SHOW

Feasts played an important role in mediaeval life and mediaeval banquets were designed to amaze and entertain! So always keen to step up to a challenge, the Loxwood Joust has once again teamed up with Toby Harmer the award winning Garlic Wood Farm Chef, to ‘WOW’ diners with an authentic mediaeval banquet that will be overflowing with the sights, sounds and smells of a mediaeval luncheon. Mediaeval food was known to be rich and flavoursome, and diners at the four-course banquet will be able to experience and savour authentic recreations from a mediaeval nobleman’s salver. Dishes of the finest fayre will be served to accommodate both traditional

and vegetarian palates, with guests being treated to the tastes and vibrancy of food from this time. However, participants are respectfully reminded that education and standing was deemed to be shown by good table manners, and remembering the teachings of Erasmus of Rotterdam in 1530 to “refrain from sucking on their fingers or blowing their nose on the tablecloth, as it is considered a breach of manners.” Whilst dining, riddlers, jugglers and musicians will be on hand to entertain, as bards tell tall tales and spread rumours and hearsay. And with traditional games, songs, dancing and fun also on the menu, you can be sure that this sumptuous meal will be

a culinary experience never to be forgotten! Commencing at 1.30pm and lasting around 1.5 hours, the day’s programme of events ensures that banqueting guests will not miss the action in the main Jousting arena. Tickets for this unique experience are available at www. loxwoodjoust.co.uk, and cost £22 for adults and £10 for children under 14 years of age. The Loxwood Joust’s unrivalled programme of mediaeval revelry takes place on the 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th August, between 10am and 6pm daily. It is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood with ample Free Parking.

Horsham’s perfect opening of Camping World Stadium Photos by John Lines

Saturday July 20 Horsham 3 1 Crawley Town Football Martin read - Sports Reporter Perfection is rare, but 1080 spectators witnessed it last Saturday at Horsham Football Club’s new home – The Camping World Community Stadium at Hop Oast, where the Hornets welcomed Crawley Town for the official opening. The weather was lovely, the facilities were excellent and the huge

crowd ringing the stunning artificial pitch were treated to a welldeserved win, show-casing some excellent goals. Nothing could have been better as Horsham celebrated their long awaited home-coming since leaving Queen Street what seems like a century ago, since when the Hornets had groundshared at Worthing, Horsham YMCA and, latterly, at the Sussex FA HQ at Lancing. The big win was the fourth in a row for Horsham, after, earlier in the month, they had beaten Steyning 3-4 at the Shooting Field, and both Hartley Wintney and Haywards Heath at

home – 4-1 and 2-0, respectively. Against Crawley – who are greatly enjoying their training sessions on a permanent basis at Hop Oast - the stadium was really buzzing with happy faces, the game getting under way after a minute’s applause in memory of the ever-encouraging late Horsham President Frank King, who sadly did not quite live to see a wonderful day, which he would certainly have relished. Crawley enjoyed early possession, but it took an alert reaction from their keeper, Michael Luyambula, to finger tip Harvey Sparks’ blast over the bar. Skirmishes at the

other end were safely negotiated before Chris Smith put Horsham in front with a well-taken goal. But, Horsham’s advantage was shortlived, Reece Grego-Cox unleashing an equalising pile driver, half time arriving with the combatants one goal apiece. Resuming with Josh James in goal, the keeper had to be at his very best to deny Grego-Cox a second, who was soon frustrated again, before the Reds conceded a penalty, Kieran Lavery gratefully and confidently putting Horsham back in front from the spot. Crawley responded but were just unable to convert, the ball being scrambled away by the Horsham defence, ahead of a corner being fired straight to James. With action switching to the other end, Horsham scored again, Lavery converting Malachi Hudson’s supply. And, they might have gone even further ahead, but Hudson was unable to capitalise. Horsham, though, were under pressure in the closing min-

utes, but James was up to the task, Horsham winning the memorable, entertaining game 3-1, a just reward for all of the prolonged hard, hard work by the Club to create the superb new facilities. Hoping to continue their outstanding preparation for the new season, before welcoming Leatherhead for the first league game on Saturday August 10th, Horsham round off their friendlies with visits to Wimborne Town this Saturday and East Grinstead on the following Tuesday (30th). Meanwhile, reflecting on the historic day, Horsham Chairman Kevin Borrett said: “It gives me tremendous pride to thank everyone at this wonderful club for their support and contribution to making our new home possible. I have been overwhelmed by the positive comments received, especially those saying how the new stadium really does feel like ‘our home’! I feel immensely privileged to be part of this club.”

Ben Gumbrell heads for bare-knuckle challenge Boxing Martin read - Sports Reporter After 45 bouts for Horsham Amateur Boxing Club, captaining the Club and winning a world title as a welterweight, Horsham’s Ben Gumbrell is planning to hang up his gloves, foregoing the opportunity to notch up a half century of fights and turn pro. 33 year old Gumbrell wants a new challenge – he has previously tried karate and kick boxing - and is entered in a bareknuckle boxing ‘Prizefighter’ tournament at the O2 Indigo Arena on Saturday, September 14. Bare-knuckle boxing is popular at the London venue and elsewhere around the UK and, at the O2, Gumbrell has been drawn against fans’ favourite Tony Lafferty in a quarter final clash to be screened live on pay per view. The ‘Prizefighter’ winner will pick up a £10,000 prize and a shot at the world championship, Gumbrell explaining: “I follow bare-knuckle boxing and when I saw the possibility, I decided to go for it. I don’t have to change my

boxing. The game plan is to box. You don’t want to get smashed up in the quarter finals because there are still two more fights to go.” Gumbrell accepts that this will be a stiff challenge and that he may have to slug it out against Lafferty. The TV coverage will include Jimmy Sweeney defending his world lightweight championship and Tyler Goodjohn meeting Sean George for the vacant world featherweight title, Gumbrell adding: “I wanted to fight Tony. People will enjoy watching it – and it’s a good way for me to get noticed! I believe I can stand toe to toe with him and outbox him as well. It depends whether I listen to my head or my heart !” Bare-knuckle boxing began in the era before padded gloves, continuing until the Marquess of Queensbury’s rules were introduced in the UK in the 1880s, but is enjoying a revival. Ben Gumbrell bare-knuckle training can be seen at https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=14_-ERjBbZY Horsham Boxing Club is situated at the far end of North Parade car

park adjacent to Horsham Park – its home for 22 years - and is always recruiting for new talent! Males and females looking to get into the sport from the age of 9 years old are eligible. The Club saying: “HBC is open to anyone with the right attitude, willing to learn and wishing to train with the possibility of competing for the club. We also offer boxing fitness for all! Boxing will teach you to rely on yourself, to value the input of others, and most importantly to respect both your own skills and those of others. You will develop a level of self confidence that you will carry with you for the rest of your life, with a combination of athleticism, physical and mental conditioning and sportsmanship.” Contact details and training times are on the Club website - www.horshamboxing club.co.uk. Roffey shot out of the National KO Cup Sunday July 21 ECB Royal London Club Championship – Round 5 Roffey 151-9 (40 overs) Bexley 152-1 (27.1 overs) Bexley won by 9 wickets Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter Something unusual happened on the outskirts of London last Sunday – Roffey 1st eleven were beaten, their only defeat in any format for ten months. It is even rarer for Roffey to disappoint their loyal supporters – who had travelled in a Club coach for the game in north Kent, but even the most fervent Roffey fan could only concede that they were well beaten, out-gunned with both bat and ball. After winning the Sussex Premier League four times in the past five years, currently top of the table and with extensive cup runs, Roffey are undoubtedly the best club team in the county, and only seriously challenged when they come up against the biggest and best of the top clubs around the UK, and it took the current Kent Premiership leaders to inflict the blow. At Manor Way, Bexley the hosts, captained by former Kent pro Adam Riley, inserted Roffey and the normally freescoring openers - Ben Manenti and Jibran Khan, although not easy to part were kept in check, the 50 partnership arriving in the 10th over. When Ben Manenti, with a better than a run a ball 44, became the first of

Freddie Foster’s four wickets, 68 runs were on the board, but Foster then accounted for Mike Norris and Rohit Jagota, the pair lasting just five balls between them, Foster having taken 3-7, and Roffey were suddenly 74-3. At the 20 over mid point of the innings 93 had been reached without further loss, but, although Khan was in the forties, on his way to his eventual 54, progress was still measured. Only skipper Matt Davies and Theo Rivers subsequently made double figure contributions, two late run outs further restricting Roffey – to 151-9 off their 40 over allocation. In pursuit, Bexley, too, started quietly, getting to 40 from their first 10 overs, but, with the openers still together, 97 runs had been scored from half of their ration, with Roffey in dire need of an all too elusive golden over. Bexley then accelerated and when the first wicket eventually fell only four more runs were required with in excess of 13 overs in hand, wicket keeper Matt Cross – a Scottish international - finishing unbeaten on 81, Bexley cruising home by 9 wickets. In the previous round Bexley, with ex Kent all rounder Adam Ball – a former England Under 19 Captain - again in their ranks, crushed high-flying Essex Premier League’s Hornchurch with almost identical scores. Roffey had done well to be the sole Sussex side in the national stage of the cup again, and Bexley paid tribute to their excellent supporters, but for this season Roffey’s dream of national glory is over.

Premier League round up – matches on Saturday July 20th Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter

Sporadic overnight rain on Friday had a variable effect on games – no play at all was possible at Cuckfield, where East Grinstead were due to visit, both sides being obliged to accept 10 abandonment points, leaving the hosts eighth, 26 points above the relegation zone and East Grinstead fifth – 4 points behind Middleton. Other games proceeded, with the form book counting for nothing at the Wellbrook Ground, where the hosts, bottom club Mayfield, inflicted a resounding defeat on second in the table Brighton & Hove, the weather reducing the game to a T20 contest. After winning the toss and deciding to bat, Mayfield were indebted to their 33 year old overseas player, Sri Lankan Test batsman Kaushal Silva, whose 106 from 57 balls included 6 sixes.

Sussex’s Harry Finch made a rapid 25 and Callum Saker 37, seven bowlers toiling as Mayfield set Brighton a formidable 207 run target. Replying, Brighton were soon 23-2. They staged a partial recovery, but Mayfield skipper Matt Cooke took 4-22, Brighton finishing 68 runs short with 7 wickets down. Recently, Mayfield have been on the wrong end of close encounters, but remain at the foot of the table by a substantial margin. At Fulking, hosts Preston Nomads elected to bat, scoring 226-7 off 53 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 86 from skipper Daniel Phillips and thirties from Harrison Ward and Danial Ibrahim. Eastbourne, though won by two wickets, opener Malcolm Johnson scoring 88 and Ben Twine 43, despite Ibrahim taking 4-34. However, Nomads remain third, while Eastbourne move up one place to sixth.

Horsham Cricket Club’s World Cup contribution

Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter :Horsham Cricket Club Chairman, Richard Marshall was thrilled with the Club’s extraordinary contribution to the spectacular World Cup Final, telling the District Post: “It made it so special to see a quintet of our players past and present, who’d cut their teeth with us, performing on and off the field at Lord’s. Jofra Archer’s exciting super over had us all

gripped, and earlier Matt Henry, who was with us in 2011 as a 19 year old, had bowled Jofra. The Kiwi Bowling Coach is Shane Jurgenssen, our overseas player in 1999, and England Fielding Coach Carl Hopkinson played for us in the early 90s. And, our current all rounder, Nick Oxley, an MCC young professional who has already been 12th man for England, fielding as a sub at the Oval last year, was called up to Lord’s to bowl at the England squad in their World Cup preparation!”

Carl Hopkinson’s fielding masterclass is available here - https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=JSJ6oFjnVF0 Although Horsham Cricket Club is having a challenging season, the Club’s ability to provide a conveyor belt of cricketing talent – including Robin Martin-Jenkins, Chris Nash, Will Beer and, more recently, Tom Haines and Tom Clark (now away with the England Under 19 squad) – is truly remarkable.

Horsham humbled by Middleton Saturday July 20 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Horsham 132 all out (48.4 overs) – Middleton 138-2 (21 overs) Middleton won by 8 wickets – Middleton 30 points - Horsham 3 Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter The last time the sides met – in the 50 over league match at Cricketfield Road in May – 682 runs were scored after skipper Michael Thornely and Sussex’s Will Beer had got hundreds for Horsham and Sean Heather and Mahesh Rawat – on whom mid table Middleton rely – were also centurians, Middleton’s extraordinary run chase enabling them to win by eight wickets. Last Saturday, at the coast it was a quieter, much lower-scoring affair, but, sadly the result was the same. After a briefly delayed start, Horsham, put in by

Middleton, began well - Joe Willis making 35 and Tom Haines 31 with support from skipper Michael Thornely (21). But, the next five batsmen scored just 15 runs between them, Horsham slumping from 90-2 to 103-8. Manrai Kalsi and James Brehaut subsequently made contributions, but a target of 133 was unlikely to inconvenience Middleton, especially when they put on an opening stand of 104, the host’s 8 wicket win coming with 40 overs still available. On Saturday Horsham host Cuckfield in the last of this season’s timed games, after which the format reverts to the 50 overs a side win format. In May, Cuckfield beat Horsham by 15 runs after both sides had exceeded 300. Meanwhile, with six games remaining, Horsham need to conjure up two or three wins to move them clear of their penultimate spot in the relegation zone, where they are 13 points above Mayfield, but 26 behind eighth-placed Cuckfield.

It was not a happy Saturday for the Club’s teams – the 2nds won the toss and batted against Crawley, number 9 Louis Cooper top-scoring with 36, a late 50 run partnership enabling Horsham to get to 154 all out. Crawley lost an early wicket, but Horsham only had two further successes, Crawley winning by 7 wickets with overs in hand, resulting in Horsham occupying the bottom berth, 7 points shy of Worthing 2s. Horsham 3rd XI were at The Sportsfield, visiting Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching 2s, where they inserted the hosts, who posted 250 despite Will Fenwick’s three wickets and, in a good display of team bowling, two apiece for Rakesh Parekh, Robin Fenwick and skipper Mark Haines. Horsham, though, could only muster 118 in reply, Sam Martin-Jenkins making 36. In the table, Horsham 3s are just above bottom side, Henfield 2s, but 33 points behind Slinfold 2s.

AJ Walters lift the Gullick Cup – again! And Bat & Ball win the Plate Photo by Rachel Humphries

Ninth win lifts unbeaten Roffey 39 points clear Saturday July 20 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Roffey 143-6 (20 overs) – Three Bridges 125 all out (19.4 overs) Roffey won by 18 runs – Roffey 20 points – Three Bridges 10

Cup - AJ Walters 166-5 (20 overs) – Nuthurst 144-9 (20 overs) AJ Walters won by 22 runs Plate – Horsham Rugby Club 115-7 (20 overs) – Bat & Ball 117-5 (16.1) Bat & Ball won by 5 wickets Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter The AJW Group from Slinfold - specialists in the supply, exchange, repair and lease of commercial and business aircraft spare parts – reprised their 2015 and 2018 Gullick Cup victories when they beat Nuthurst relatively comfortably at Horsham Cricket Club, despite Nuthurst being no strangers to success in the competition, which they last won five years ago. AJ Walters succeeded at the toss and elected to bat, posting an impressive 166-5 off their 20 six ball over allocation, Richard Hancock, Nick Scott and Matt

Hoyte contributing majorly. In reply, Nuthurst kept pressing, but eventually the target proved just a little too challenging despite the best efforts of Rob Keen and Urrehanan, AJW Captain, Craig Skilton telling the District Post: “We’ve got a few decent batsmen and posted a good score, so we were fairly confident that we could defend it and its great to win the Gullick Cup again!” The Plate competition was a family affair – father and son Simon and Liam Hughes playing for the Rugby Club and three brothers, Jack, Josh and 12 year old Will Dixon were in the Bat & Ball side. The Rugby Club batted first, scoring 115-7, Matt Rees top-scoring, while Will Dixon took 1-8. Responding, Bat & Ball started as they meant to proceed, despite Nick White’s 2-9, and twenties from Jack Dixon and Sam Davis, got them home with overs to spare. With his Manager Caroline Webber looking on, Chris Upton, Head Chef at the recently re-furbished

Newpound gastrpub told us: “This was the first time that we’d entered, so we’re very pleased! It was great to see our team playing so well together.” The well-supported, convivial Gullick competition, with its perennially popular finals, longstanding highlights in Horsham Cricket Club’s extraordinarily busy calendar of matches, with much banter among friendly rivals, began in 1972. It is designed to give the opportunity to some non-regular cricketers to participate, and is played, helmetless, with exciting running between the wickets. Presenting the cup, organiser Chris “Shaka” Shambrook said: “We had 14 teams entered this year, all the games were played – in great spirit – keeping recreational cricket alive. Many thanks to Richard Marshall for another great pitch – and to all of the invaluable team managers, umpires and scorers in the Cup and Plate Finals and throughout the competition.”

Heavy rain during a thunder storm on Friday night and more early morning showers on Saturday put Roffey’s ground under water when the players began to arrive. But, the forecast was promising and subsequent sun and wind produced sufficiently drier conditions for a T20 game starting at 3pm, allowing busy groundsman Drew Smallwood to mop up the square and give the outfield a close cut. Three Bridges won the toss, inserting Roffey with early wickets falling, but, tuning up with a T20 century against Lindfield in the previous Sunday’s Sussex Cup Quarter Final, Rohit Jagota was again on song, his 54 ball 77 containing 8 fours and 3 sixes. After Michael Rose had taken 3-20, skipper Matt Davies’ cameo, an unbeaten 20, enabled Roffey to set a target of 144. When Three Bridges replied they found it tough going, James Pearce soon dismissing both openers, until Bridges’ prolific overseas batsman David Winn got off to a rapid start. But, when Pearce, with 3-8 from his four overs, trapped Winn, too (LBW), there was little of substance from the middle order and, although the tail did wag, only their 52 from the last two wickets provided any respectability. Luke Barnard with 2-21 was as probing as ever, while, with former county wicketkeeper Paul Harrison taking the gloves, Roffey skipper Matt Davies was able to take his preferred position in the field, impressing with a slick run out before ending Bridges’ innings with a smart catch.

The scores might give the impression of a close game, but in reality Three Bridges had been playing catch up throughout their innings - the only brief glimpse of concern for Roffey coming during Winn’s 19 ball stay. With current runner up Brighton & Hove losing to bottom club Mayfield and Preston Nomads also coming unstuck – against Eastbourne – Roffey, with six games left, opened up a 39 point lead at the top of the table. The win secured a treble for Roffey over Three Bridges, who returned to the Premiership this season – with two wins in the league and one in the National KO Cup, Roffey skipper Matt Davies telling the District Post: “Before we batted we reckoned that 130-140 would be a good score in the conditions – it was spinning miles – so we were happy with 143, especially if we got wickets up top, which we did! David Winn started well, but it only takes one good ball, and that was what happened. It was pleasing to get 20 points when it looked as though we might not get a game in at all.” This Saturday Roffey travel to Saint Hill to take on 5thplaced East Grinstead. In May Roffey beat always useful Grinstead surprisingly easily after George Fleming’s hat trick stood the game on its head. Meanwhile, last Saturday was another good one for Roffey – the Seconds bowling out Findon for 117 to win by 85 runs after Chris Webb had scored 54 and Max Rivers 49, ahead of Mark Pavlovic’s 4-17. Roffey 2s are current runner up, leaders Worthing shading them by a single point. Roffey 3s made 144-9 at East Preston, thanks to 30s from Kyle Fairs and Lewis Shivnarain, and then skittled the hosts for 52, Wilf Tunley-Lo taking 4-18 and Jim Barnes and Ben Gibbs two apiece. Roffey 3s are top of their league, 34 points clear of Barns Green 2s. Roffey 4s, fourth in their table, did not play.

Challenging Billingshurst third after strong win Saturday July 20 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Ifield 189 all out (48 overs) – Billingshurst 190-5 (34 overs) Billingshurst won by 5 wickets. Billingshurst 30 points – Ifield 10 Cricket Martin read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst moved up to third in the table with an impressive win at Ifield last Saturday, courtesy of an excellent spell of bowling from former skipper Ben

Williams. Earlier in the season Billingshurst bowled out Ifield for 95 - this time Ifield showed greater resolve, but the result was the same, and, having been relegated from the Premiership last season, after losing players Ifield (bottom 19 points behind Goring and 57 below eighth-placed Burgess Hill), look likely to go down again. The game on Ifield Green started an hour late, with overs reduced following heavy overnight rain, and after winning the toss, Billingshurst put Bridges in, enjoying immediate success, new

Captain Ben Mortimer dismissing Tom Wragg for a duck. Mortimer then despatched the other opener before Paul Osborne accounted for Ifield’s overseas player - 24 year old Sri Lankan Prasansana Jayamanne, after which it was the Ben Williams show. Williams bowled his first victim, but was then supported by a stumping and a catch from outstanding keeper Josh Wood and four outfield catches, finishing with 7-60. However, Ifield’s target of 190 might have been challenging

but for Billingshurst’s excellent start. Openers Louis Storey and Aussie overseas Jordan Willoughby scored 61 and 51 respectively, and, although a slight wobble followed, a mid order 40 from evergreen Scott Stratton facilitated Billi’s win with an abundance of overs to spare, Ben Williams telling the District Post: “Ifield were 150-4, so we thought we might be chasing a really challenging score in the conditions – the wicket was wet. We fielded well, but they still set

us a reasonable target, and we needed to get off to a good start which we certainly did! Louis has been knocking on the score for a big score and Jordan has been batting well, too and they both delivered for us.” With everything still to play for, the win leaves Billingshurst 18 points shy of second-placed Haywards Heath and 29 from leaders Hastings, and, on Saturday, Billingshurst return home to welcome Goring, whom they beat by 46 runs at the coast in May
