St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart community art trail launched last month. And the response has been amazing! Headline sponsored by Thakeham, the trail has encouraged local people to get involved in many different ways. The trail, which comprises 26 giant hearts and 11 smaller hearts, spans across Crawley, Horsham, Reigate and East Grinstead. Just some of the areas across West Sussex and East Surrey where the

local hospice provides expert end of life care. HeART to Heart, which is supported by an app and trail map, encourages visitors to find each heart to collect a code and earn a reward. The app is available on both Apple and Android and has already been downloaded more than 1,200 times. While heart hunters have unlocked the 26 hearts an incredible 7,000 times! Download our app to get heart hunting and don’t forget to share your wonderful pictures with us @hearttrailuk!” Alongside the trail, St Catherine’s has launched The Hub; a shop and art studio in County Mall Shopping Centre, Crawley. The Hub has welcomed HeART to Heart artists and sponsors, as well as other local art groups and businesses to host free, creative workshops for everyone to enjoy. So far the workshops have included a variety of art forms such as papercraft with art group Stampin’ Up UK, watercolour and acrylic painting with Crawley Art Society, and a design your own heart competition during hub takeovers from Freeman Brothers, Mayo Wynne Baxter, Coole Bevis, and Thakeham. Becky Hughes, Community Co-ordinator at Freeman Brothers, said: “Our team have already run two Hub takeover days as part of our involvement in HeART to Heart. Lots of families flowed in and out of the Hub and I enjoyed watching them interact together via the art activities on offer. Hospice volunteers provided people with further information about the trail too. There’s so much to explore, including our beautiful Keepsake heart!” If you would like to get in-

Cisswood House Hotel, in Lower Beeding near Horsham, is pleased to announce plans to construct a unique development on the grounds behind the existing hotel. The proposed project would feature, two detached buildings to include a total of 30 new flats with parking, 10 of which would be affordable housing units. Purchasers of the new flats would have the unique opportunity to utilise the hotel’s facilities and services at a reduced cost or no cost, to include room service to the new flats, maid service, concierge, use of the hotel grounds, spa, gym, swimming pool, and restaurants. All these services will be available on an ad hoc basis, with no obligation. Proceeds from the development will be utilised to enhance and upgrade the existing

hotel. The planning application was recently submitted to Horsham District Council.

Over 90 community groups already signed up for the new Horsham District community lottery Over 90 expressions of interest from community groups across the District have already been received by Horsham District Council to be a partner in the new Community Lottery set to launch at end of August. The lottery, when it launches, will raise vital funds to support community groups whose work benefits residents in Horsham District and will also give ticket buyers the chance to win up to £25,000. There is no charge to the community group and signing up is quick and easy. Participating community groups will get their own promotional webpage on the dedicated Community Lottery website, dedicated marketing materials to

help promote their cause and 50% of all ticket sales from supporters who select their page. Cllr Tricia Youtan, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing said: “I am delighted that so many community groups are getting behind this new weekly online lottery which will help to raise valuable additional funds to support charities, community groups and local voluntary groups whose work benefits residents in Horsham District. I encourage all eligible community groups to get involved and benefit from this new project.” Anyone buying a £1 ticket can select the community group

they want to support from those registered on the website. Lottery ticket buyers could win a weekly prize, including a £25,000 jackpot! 50p of the £1 ticket price goes directly to the ticket buyer’s chosen group. 10p in every pound also goes into a community lottery fund which will be distributed by the Council to community projects across the District. Youngsters playing with fire run the risk of ruining summer holidays Firefighters in Horsham are urging children not to play with fire, this summer holiday, after coming across a number of unexplained fires in the district. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and Horsham District Council have discovered evidence of a number of small fires at different locations around the town, which appear to have been started deliberately. On some occasions, the fire and rescue service had not been made aware of the fire at the time, meaning it could have burned for longer or in some cases even got out of control and caused further damage. Firefighters are encouraging members of the public to call 999 even if they think the fire is already out, so that they are aware of the incident and spot any trends that may be emerging. With the summer holidays now in full swing, firefighters and the town’s neighbourhood wardens have joined forces to spread the word about the dangers that can arise from antisocial behaviour. Working with 4TheYouth, they will be holding a number of outreach sessions at different locations around the town with the Snack Wagon Van. Here they will be providing different activities while offering preventative information on drugs and knife crime, as well as tips on healthy lifestyle choices and sexual health outreach. Firefighters from Horsham Fire Station will be joining the outreach work on certain dates to provide fire safety advice. The outreach work comes after a number of incidents, including one case of suspected arson near the pump track at Highwood Mill in which the hollow of a tree was left charred. A spokesperson for Horsham District Council said: “It is concerning and disappointing to learn about this incident which follows other

criminal damage in and around the pump track since it was opened. “The Council works on behalf of the community to negotiate such facilities and funds spent repairing or replacing damage could otherwise be spent more constructively on future improvments. “We encourage all residents to report anti-social behaviour and criminal damage to Sussex Police on telephone number 101 or 999 in an emergency.” James McGrath, Horsham Fire Station Commander, said: “It is concerning to see a number of suspected cases of arson in the district. Sadly it is not uncommon to see a small rise of this type of incidents during the school summer holidays. “But what may seem as a bit of harmless fun can easily get out of hand in a very short space of time. “What is concerning is that despite this tree suffering a significant amount of damage, no-one thought to call the fire and rescue service, meaning that this fire had the potential to become a much bigger incident and caused even more damage, or even cause injury to someone. “That is why this summer outreach work is so important, and we hope as many youngsters as possible are able to come along to one of the planned visits.” The events will be staged on Mondays from 2 to 5pm at Bennetts Field on 19 and 26 August Wednesdays from 2 to 5pm at the pump track on 21 and 28 August Fridays from 2 to 5pm at Horsham Park (near the skate park side of the park) on 16, 23 and 30 August. From cricket to workhouses and much more 204 Square miles, at least 100 million years, and only 100 objects to explore and explain the rich and fascinating story of Horsham District’s Heritage. If Neil MacGregor can tell the world’s history in 100 objects, surely telling the District’s heritage with the same number of objects should be easy? But it isn’t for many of the District’s stories have lain hidden in plain sight, known to a few. Now as part of the District’s Year of Culture, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is unearthing the stories and revealing in the full glare of public gaze the District’s compelling heritage which covers from dinosaurs to ploughmen’s lunches, from Roman roads to postal services, from cricket to workhouses and much much more. The new temporary exhibition, Heritage of Horsham District in One Hundred Objects is at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery and is on now until 12 October. An accompanying book is due to be published and launched at the beginning of October. Working with the Horsham District Heritage Forum, the Museum asked the member organisations to nominate their 10 most interesting or important cultural objects. The replies revealed a heritage that makes the District such a fascinating place in which

to live. The selection could be seen as quirky, but every object represents a part of the District’s heritage. Who knew that Bramber has a Coaching wall that was built to stop coach travellers peering into adjoining gardens? Or that Henfield has a musical instrument- a Change eight-bell set-, a one-off, that is recognised as nationally significant. Or that Henfield has a Union Jack flag that was used to drape over one of the four “unknown warrior” coffins, ready for the selected one to be interred at Westminster Abbey. Or that stoolball was a local game that took off after World War One, only to decline in popularity in the 1930s, and then to be resurrected in the 1970s. The 100 objects are like points in a compass, directing the visitor across a broad heritage landscape. The exhibition, with its strong visual images and outline, is in effect a visitor centre to the District’s heritage, and the forthcoming book, on which it is based, will be the travel guide. The exhibition will feature over 30 of the 100 objects including cricket stumps that formed a shop- sign, a great introduction to the sporting heritage of a game first recorded in the District nearly 300 years ago. Or the Horshamosaurus, a dinosaur named after the town, portrayed through a specially commissioned painting

Public meeting reviews proposed changes to NHS mental health care

People living in and around Horsham are invited to NHS events to input into proposals to improve the quality and safety of mental health services for adults, older people and those living with dementia. The event form part of a series of four public meetings to have your say on the plans. They come following the first event held in Chichester on Tuesday. The plans have been developed over many months by the three clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in West Sussex and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, following input and feedback from doctors, specialists, service users, and staff. They aim to: provide a higher quality of care by moving services from out-dated, poor quality wards in Chichester and Horsham to safer, more modern wards in Worthing and Crawley give patients the privacy and dignity they deserve and to meet national standards by making all wards single-sex, and provide an opportunity to create a centre of excellence in Worthing for people living with dementia which will improve the care for both their mental and physical health needs. The event will take place in Horsham at The Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham

The consultation will close on Friday 11 October and all of the findings will be independently analysed to enable the three CCGs in West Sussex and Sussex Partnership to make a final decision on these services later this year.

Poetry, Prose, and Performance at the Blue Idol Saturday saw thirty locals taking part in an event at the Blue Idol in Coolham. The event was part of the Horsham Year of Culture and was an exploration of peace through poetry, prose, and performance. John Cole read a piece that reminded us that peace is not just an absence of war and conflict. We must appreciate and value ourselves to help us become peaceful. With our busy lives, we all wish to feel more peaceful, and it is from there that peace can spread. So, Anne Lewitt read a poem likening peace to gossamer, a spider’s web, and suggested that peace can be woven from the centre and then can pervade the world. Several of the poems

suggested finding peace in nature, and Charles Holme pointed out that peace can also be found in laughter. Apart from poems and readings, there was a haunting Vedic chant, a Celtic chant, and an ancient song from the Quaker Song Book. Chrissie McGinn said that “Normally there is applause when someone has finished reading or singing, but at this event, we decided to have a few minutes silence instead to give people time to reflect on what they had heard.” It brought a very powerful sense of peace to the afternoon After the readings and singing the group broke into small groups to discuss their experiences. Carole Harradence, one of

the participants, said: “I really enjoyed the eclectic mix of music and poetry.” She added, “The afternoon was a totally new experience.” Previous HYoC events at this Quaker Meeting House have included a Sustainability Fair, Dialogue Pairs to discuss simplicity, and creating collages to explore a more equal world. Next events planned at the Blue Idol are a Family Fun Day and two retreat days. The first to experience the peacefulness of nature and the second to reconnect with the power of our humanity. Successful Day of Action in Pulborough On Thursday 8 August, Horsham District Council’s Pulborough Parish Neighbourhood Wardens, Pulborough Brooks Baptist Church, Saxon Weald and the local police joined local residents for a Day of Action in Carpenters Meadow in Pulborough. The Baptist Church had identified that the area was in need of a little TLC and, as well as looking at new play equipment for the play area there, they wanted to help make a difference in the vicinity. Rev David Howling approached the Neighbourhood Wardens to see what could be done and a Day of Action was formed. Around 15 people turned out on the day to help with jobs to include litter picking, hedge trimming,

removal of rubbish, weeding, jet washing and painting. Pulborough’s Neighbourhood Wardens, Carol Boniface and Vanessa Green, commented that there was such a positive reaction from residents during the day that it felt really worthwhile. The two underpass areas between the houses had become very dirty and full of litter, and two young helpers were happy to jet-wash the area and took great pride in doing so. Saxon Weald then arrived to do some graffiti removal and repaint the areas. Everyone worked tirelessly throughout the day and it is planned to run more days like this in the future.

University not the only option for school leavers: Consider a career as an electrician Thursday (15 August 2019) saw students across the country anxiously open their A-Level results. And whilst many teens will be looking forward to heading off to university, NICEIC, the UK’s leading name for registered electricians, is reminding school and college leavers in the South East to consider other viable alternatives. NICEIC wants to encourage more young entrants to consider a hands-on apprenticeship and choose a career as an electrician – highlighting the potential earnings as a major incentive. Darren Staniforth, Senior Group Technical Presenter at NICEIC explained: “University is not for everyone and the perception that you can only have a successful career if you get a degree is a false

one. “The construction industry is a well-paid sector that offers a vast array of opportunities. Yet, it is still viewed by some as a thirdrate industry for people who do not perform well at school. We want to change that perception and show students what a rewarding and diverse career they can have within the electrical sector.” Research by the Federation of Master Builders1 found that the average salary for electricians across the UK is £47,265; far exceeding the university graduate’s average income of £32,000. Plus, without the added stress of looming debts, apprenticeships are becoming an even more attractive option. “However, there are many great benefits to taking up a trade – not

just financial,” added Darren, “A trade is a viable career path which gives students the chance to learn specific skills that can open up many doors and avenues in the future – including working abroad. “There is a misconception that a job in the trade can be careerlimiting but there is a variety different options available to young boys and girls once they have completed their apprenticeship. “Some might go into management or teaching, some might go onto continue their studies – and some might use the skills they have to go off travelling around the world. There are a host of opportunities available and that is why apprenticeships are a much more enticing proposition.”

the Year of Culture events. Working with the community and the skills and resources of the society, we are bringing a truly one-off dramatic opportunity to the Capitol over the weekend of the 31st August and 1st September. We will be put-

ting together the final stages of the famous Shakespeare tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in the two-day workshop. The team of directors has been working with the main characters, since June, to develop and create the structure into which we will add the citizens of Verona on the weekend. The ‘star crossed lovers’ are played by Josh Watts (Romeo) and Holly Morris (Juliet) with a supporting cast including some HAODS favourites as well as a number of new faces to regular audiences. The workshop is free to attend for anyone over 12 and will culminate in a one-off performance to the public on the Sunday evening at 7pm. Taking place at the Capitol Theatre Horsham, the aim is to showcase our local talent and the wonderful theatre we perform in. During the workshop, there will be the opportunity to learn some stage fighting, create crowd scenes, dance and perform some original music written for us by Andrew Donovan. The workshop runs from 10a.m. on the Saturday and Sunday with the performance starting at 7 p.m. on Sunday 1st September. Horsham boys revel in the Sussex Junior Festival Cricket – Sussex Junior Cricket Festival The Sussex Junior Cricket Festival is an annual tournament for teams at all junior age groups across the county. And, at this year’s event, 14 Under 12 teams competed in the senior of the two competitions, the ‘Bowl’, playing four matches each, with the top two teams qualifying for the Final. The 35 overs a side matches were longer than the teams play in the league, and Horsham commenced their tournament playing away at Preston Nomads. The strong Nomads team bowled out Horsham for a paltry 65 before getting the runs in only 7 overs. Nomads going on to finish top of the league, although they were beaten by Chichester Priory Park in the Final. Chastened but not demoralised, the following day Horsham welcomed Stirlands to Cricketfield Road, the visitors batting first scored 156-8, a challenging total, but Horsham’s top order batted supremely, getting to the target in under 23 overs, with confidence restored. After Wednesday’s rest day, Horsham resumed with a home match against East Grinstead, who batted first, posting an imposing 189-6. Again batting extremely well, Horsham knocked off the runs in only 21.4 overs for the loss of just one wicket. With two wins out of three, but the severity of the loss to Nomads making a top two finish unlikely, Horsham went to Wisborough Green’s delightful ground on the Friday hoping

for further success. However, Wisborough’s useful team restricted Horsham to 170-8, giving both sides a chance. Horsham took two early wickets, but Wisborough rallied, keeping up with the asking rate, until an outstanding catch looked to have tipped the balance in Horsham’s favour, yet Wisborough bounced back again and needed seven runs to win from the last over, Horsham requiring an improbable three wickets. Two runs from the first three balls kept the result in doubt, until Horsham scented victory with a wicket, and, the attempt to get a second run next ball gave Horsham a run out. Then, desperately wanting two runs to win from the final ball, the Wisborough batsmen ran like hares, but Horsham kept their heads in the excitement, and having failed to run out the batsman at one end, threw the ball to the other where the batsman was unable to make his ground, Horsham snatching a win by the slenderest of margins. Horsham, though, did not quite make the Final but it was a most exciting week for the boys, with some excellent individual performances - James Gerrard, Maxwell Bartlett and Zan Copleston all hit 50s, and Stan Hague and Tom Ikin took four wickets in an innings. Other useful runs were scored by Leo Harper and Ollie Ikin, with wickets from Ben Hudson and Harry Ashby, and all round contributions from Sean O’Donnell, Jack Halsworth and Benedict Winter rounding off a hugely enjoyable and memorable week.

In June’s home fixture Billingshurst thrashed Chichester by 8 wickets after bowling them out for 94, but at Goodwood last Saturday revenge was sweet for the hosts as they dismissed depleted Billingshurst for a meagre 64 and knocked off the runs in double quick time. Chichester won the toss, and although Billingshurst lost an early wicket, at 23-1 there was no real hint of impending disaster. But, opening bowler

Matthew Geffen was on song, taking 5-9 from 8.3 overs, eating the heart out of the top and middle order as Billingshurst subsided to 24-5. Only two players went on to reach double figures, 14 extras being the major contributor. When Chichester responded, Andy Barr and Ben Williams accounted for the openers, but from 22-2 Chichester did not replicate Billingshurst’s downfall, and although Paul Osborne took Chichester’s third wicket, that was as good as it got for the visitors. Billingshurst slip to fifth, now 50 points behind leaders Hastings & St Leonards Priory and with promotion hopes severely dented if not shelved for this season. This Saturday Billingshurst return home to Jubilee Fields to take on current runner up Bognor Regis, June’s fixture at the coast having been rained off.

Horsham looking down the relegation barrel Saturday August 10 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Mayfield 142 all out (28 overs) – Horsham 133-9 (28 overs) Mayfield won by 9 runs – Mayfield 30 points Horsham 15 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter This bottom of table clash was a game that Horsham really had to win to boost their limited chance of survival in the Premier League, but it resulted in another tight finish with Horsham ending up on the losing side again, as they had done in other close calls earlier in the season. The game should have been on a 50 overs a side basis but persistent heavy showers made a mockery of the forecast. Hats off to the posi-

tive umpires, though, for getting the game going, initially 30 overs each way, but then reduced to 28 apiece as a result of the final burst of rain. Understandably, Horsham inserted Mayfield on winning the toss and at 72-2 the visitors looked like setting a stiff target, until four wickets fell for 25 runs. Wicketkeeper Harry Lloyd made 36 and Robert Sharma and David Hooper 24 each after Will Beer had picked up the prized wicket of Sri Lankan international Kaushal Silva, courtesy of the first of Nick Oxley’s three outstanding catches. But, no other batsman got beyond 8, Beer taking 3-29, and James Brehaut, Oxley and Harnoop Kalsi two wickets each. Needing 143, Horsham suffered an early setback, but reached 46 before the second wicket fell, however, at the half way stage of their allocation they had only reached 57, and in the quest for acceleration wick-

ets fell when batsmen appeared well set. Oxley top-scored with 25, but, after two subsequent run outs, the last five batsmen could only contribute 18 runs, and twelve from the last over proved too big an ask, Horsham perishing by 9 runs. With three games to go, and Horsham rooted to the bottom of the table on 190 points, 28 behind Mayfield and 59 shy of eighth club Cuckfield, on Saturday they travel to 7th -placed Three Bridges whom they had reduced to 81-9 chasing 246 in June’s home match, but were unable to finish them off. Then, on August 24th East Grinstead visit Cricketfield Road, before an away trip to current runner up Brighton for the final match of the season, in what looks increasingly likely to be Horsham’s last appearance in the Premiership for the foreseeable future.

total. After being 16-1, Roffey’s 124 run second wicket stand was a good launch pad, Theo Rivers leading the way with 92, with excellent support from Jibran Khan (50) and Matt Davies (46). When Eastbourne replied much depended on former Kent pro James Hockley, but after Rohit Jagota bowled him for 13, the innings never gathered sufficient momentum despite three batsmen getting into their twenties and 14 year old Archie Lenham from the Sussex cricket dynasty making 30 not out batting at number 10. Roffey’s strong bowling unit was frugal, Luke Barnard continuing his recent excellent form with 3-25, and skipper Matt Davies, having shed the gloves in favour of Khan, resumed his former role

as a bowler, taking 1-11. He told the District Post: “We took time to set ourselves at the start of our innings, but then lost wickets mid innings, but Theo batted really well before Ben (Manenti), Rohit and, especially Barney were good again with the ball, making Eastbourne struggle.” Rivers added: “I’ve been threatening a decent score and it was nice to get one at last!” With three games remaining, and a maximum of 90 points available, Roffey are now 62 points clear of second-placed Brighton & Hove. Roffey in Cup Final again – at Horsham’s expense Sussex T20 Cup Semi Final – Sunday August 11 Horsham 110-8 (20 overs) – Roffey 112-4 (17 overs) Roffey won by 6 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey booked their place in the Sussex Cup Final for the third year running with a comprehensive defeat of Horsham in last Sunday’s Semi Final at the Innes Memorial Ground, reprising their win against Horsham at the same stage two years ago. And, this was the third time that Roffey had beaten Horsham this season after overcoming their near neighbours home and away in the league. Horsham came with a useful T20 side, with Sussex’s Tom Haines, England U19 player Tom Clark, MCC Young Professional Nick Oxley, skipper Michael Thornely with an extensive county background and other experienced players, including the always competitive Craig Gallagher. But, on winning the toss, Roffey had no hesitation in putting Horsham in, and soon had them 18-3, James Pearce bowling both Haines – his wild swing culminating in a cartwheeling stump

– and Clark, who had scored a 60 for England U19 a few days earlier and is now hoping for selection in the U19 World Cup in South Africa and Caribbean duty. Tom Johnson and Thornely benefited from being dropped, but both departed in the twenties, Oxley top-scoring with 39. Horsham had reached 78-4, but they were never able to cut loose, with the depth of Roffey’s bowling keeping them in check, aided by three excellent catches by Mike Norris. Pearce with 3-17 was the stand out bowler, well supported by Luke Barnard (2-18) and a wicket apiece from Ben Manenti, Jamie Atkins and George Fleming. Replying, Roffey set off like a train, 11 being on the board from the first two legal balls, Manenti clubbing a six and a four after an initial wide. The first wicket went down on 33, James Brehaut bowling Manenti, the same bowler tasting further success by dismissing the in-form Jibran Khan after Tom Haines had bowled Paul Harrison, at which point the score was 51-3, necessitating some re-grouping. But Rohit Jagota was batting serenely, latterly in company with Mike Norris (27) and even when Norris was out the result looked inevitable with Matt Davies now at the crease and Theo Rivers, with a

90 the day before, in reserve. And, once Roffey got to 100, the end came quickly, Jagota finishing unbeaten on 53, Brehaut taking 2-18. Roffey skipper Matt Davies told the District Post: “James Pearce bowled really well, dismissing three top order batsmen and 110 was not defendable, it was as simple as that, really.” As before, Finals Day will be at Sussex’s Hove HQ – this year on Sunday September 8, the present intention being to stage the final under lights with a 6pm start after the Plate Final (11am) and the Trophy Final (2.30). Roffey’s opponents in the Final will be either Preston Nomads or Eastbourne – their Semi Final is at Fulking this Sunday. There is an added bonus for the winner of the Sussex T20 Cup – the successful team will be entered into next season’s National T20 competition to play the winner from another county, with Regional victors going through to National Finals Day, as Roffey did last year in Derby. Roffey 2nd XI were also in Semi Final action last Sunday – in the Sussex T20 Trophy versus RMU CC at Preston Nomads - but a dual Roffey appearance at the Hove Finals Day is not to be, Roffey 2s falling short by 24 runs.

From last Saturday the last four matches of the season are played in the 50 over win format and, despite the very unsettled weather, all five Premier League matches were completed. Away from the Horsham and Roffey games, reported elsewhere in your District Post, the match of the day was at Middleton, where there was an extraordinary result. But, first, at East Grinstead, there was another close game, the hosts elected to bat first and scored 257-5 in a game reduced to 32 overs a side. Will Adkin made 108 not out and Tom Haynes 96, following their opening partnership of 210. Three Bridges also started well, putting on 125 for the first wicket, Sam Cooper scoring 72 and Conor Golding 52.

Their departures did not stall the run chase, Adam Jones continuing with 53 and Jack Hyde with 30, but their efforts were in vain, Grinstead winning by 4 runs, with Bradley Hatchett and skipper Darryl Rebbetts taking three wickets each. At Fulking Preston Nomads won the toss and inserted Cuckfield, the visitors making 255-8 from their 50 overs – wicketkeeper Marcus Campopiano top scoring with 89, with former Horsham player Joe Ludlow contributing 58 and Harry Clark 44. Replying, Nomads began shakily, and never recovered from 41-4, only Captain Daniel Phillips with 61 making any real impact, Cuckfield winning by 58 runs after dismissing Nomads for 197, Sussex’s Abidine Sakande and Nick Patterson each enjoying three wicket spells. 689 runs were scored at Middle-

ton, the hosts appearing to have batted Brighton & Hove out of the game with 343-5, openers Harry Hovey (110) and Sean Heather (76) putting on 195 for the first wicket, followed by an unbeaten 83 from Mahesh Rawat. But, Brighton won with 7 balls to spare after Sussex’s Luke Wells made a whirlwind 159 – including 16 fours and 8 sixes - and fellow opener Bryce Hounsome 105, in a 268 run opening stand. Hugo Gillespie and Matt Machan then chipped in with 30 and 22 respectively, Brighton winning by 5 wickets, to maintain their runner up spot, 20 points clear of third-placed Middleton. Preston Nomads are fourth, East Grinstead fifth and Eastbourne sixth, while Three Bridges are seventh and Cuckfield eighth – 31 points clear of the relegation zone.

Zach was one of five Sussex players selected, the squad, which also including players from Surrey and two from Kent, were all trained by Basketball England’s Regional Representative Coach Rhys Davies. South East were understand-

ably proud of their results at the tournament, in the pool Stage beating both North East and West Midlands comfortably before being shaded by the South – and, by a single point out of 79 - by East Midlands. Then, in the Play Offs South East won convincingly against South West before a desperately tight loss against London and missing out on the Semi Finals qualifying by the narrowest of margins. A rightly excited Zach told the District Post: “Having been given the opportunity to be one of the twelve individuals to represent South East England was such a privilege. To be able to wit-

In reply Roffey lost an early wicket, but wicketkeeper Anish Padalkar’s well supported 66 saw Roffey home with 23 balls to spare, cementing their top of the table position, 32 points clear of Pagham. Roffey thirds were at Hill Barn Recreation Ground, where they beat Findon by 133 runs after posting a 252 run target, thanks to 112 not out from opener Patrick Gibbs and 91 from Ed Barnes. Findon had no real answer to wiley Jim Barnes’ 4-18, three other bowlers sharing the remaining spoils. Roffey head their table 49 points ahead of Chippingdale 2nds A waterlogged pitch at Faygate prevented Roffey 4s from taking on Crawley Eagles, the visitors remaining second, 40 points clear of third-placed Roffey 4ths.

In a disappointing start to their league programme, injury hit YMCA suffered their second defeat in four days, but there were encouraging signs for Manager Peter Buckland and the squad, with YM leading until the final quarter of the fast-paced end to end game, six goals coming in the exciting second half. Martin Smith put YM in front in the 14th minute and the lead was retained until just before half time when Alfold’s Kevin Lucas equalised. Resuming 1-1, Lucas soon gave Alfold the lead, but, six minutes later parity returned when Luke Gedling scored from one of his trademark pinpoint free kicks. Then, with less than half an hour remaining, Matt Daniel slotted home Bradley Ross’ pass, restoring YM’s advantage – 2-3. But, YM’s joy was short-lived, in a sudden

flurry of home goals, first Sam Lemon drew Alfold level, before Lucas completed his hat trick and Lemon scored again, clinching the host’s 5-3 win on YM’s first visit to Alfold’s Recreation Ground for a Premier Division fixture. Bradley Ross was YM’s Player of the Match for his ‘hard running and determined attitude, injecting new life into the attack and laying on YM’s third goal.’ Manager Peter Buckland said: “I can’t believe it, I have never experienced anything like it In all my years in football, two games in and eight first 11 players out, one of which is our Goalkeeper, however the youngsters that have been called in have done an excellent job and will benefit from the experience, no panic still from me, judge this squad come Christmas. I said after Saturdays defeat, it’s how we respond on Tuesday that counts and the answer was clear for all to see, leading 3-2 with 20 minutes left, they just never quite had the experience to shut the game out against a very strong Alfold side, ultimately though, the best side won.”

Broadbridge Heath entered new territory on an exceptionally windy day last Saturday when they ventured to Gravesend in

the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup in a match broadcast by the BBC. And, in the trickiest of conditions, they won, earning themselves £2,250 in the process. Hosts Punjab United were founded in 2003 by a group of young lads just wanting to play football together on Sundays. Since when the team has been propelled by back to back promotions from

their entry into the non-league structure in 2017 (when they won the Kent County League Premier Division with a record points tally – becoming the first predominantly Asian-run team to do so) - into the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, the same level as Heath, in which they finished 17th out of 20 last season. This was Punjab’s first entry in the FA Cup, the Club be-

ing the brainchild of owner, local businessman Chipie Sian, who built the stadium, designed the kit and acts Chairman and Manager Although Broadbridge Heath have been around for much longer, this was a testing encounter for the Bears, culminating in their best ever FA Cup campaign, not having been past the extra preliminary round before. In the swirling wind at the open Manak Stadium ball control was not easy, but Punjab broke through in the sixth minute, their cross failing to create danger. On the 10 minute mark keeper Conor Evento dropped the ball and it was deflected for an unrewarded corner, then, another Punjab strike was gathered at the second attempt before a Marlon Maxwell clearance kept Punjab at bay. Heath, though were settling in, coming more into the game, with Lee Carney’s long range shot fumbled off for a corner, Evento having to dive at the other end, pushing the ball off for another Punjab set piece. With action switching again, Andy Waddingham’s free kick sailed over, ahead of a further Punjab corner. With the wind appearing to get even stronger, it seemed that a goalkeeping error could prove decisive. And, just before the break, a Heath free kick ballooned and with the

Punjab keeper scrambling back he palmed it onto the crossbar and the ball went in the net, for an own goal initially credited to George Goodwin. With little to choose between the sides, the score remained 1 nil to Heath at the break. Resuming the wind was in Punjab’s favour and Evento had to be at his best to hang on to an overhead catch, while shortly afterwards, Scott Weller came close for Heath but was denied by some brave keeping. Then, Punjab’s Ratcliffe blasted wide from close quarters and, in a typically nervy, fiercly contested FA Cup tie ending, Punjab hit the post from a corner during six minutes of extra time. Another shot was collected by Evento and Punjab had their final corner, but Heath held firm with sturdy defending, coming away as slightly relieved winners with a potentially tough trip to East Sussex in August 24th’s Preliminary Round to play Hastings United of the BetVictor Isthmian League South East at the Pilots Field. Meanwhile, back in the league, on Saturday Broadbridge Heath travel to Saltdean, before entertaining Alfold at their new Countryside Stadium on Tuesday (August 20th)

Big crowd sees Horsham share points with Leatherhead Saturday August 10 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 1 1 Leatherhead Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Following their promotion into the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division, last Saturday saw Horsham’s first competitive fixture at their brand new Camping World Community Stadium . The Club was thrilled to welcome a huge turnout of spectators – over 700 coming through the turnstiles despite the uninviting showery, gale force conditions. A much changed Horsham side took to the field, including freshly signed Jerry O’Sullivan from Dorking Wanderers, and the Hornets fought back from an early deficit to secure a valuable point at the start of their new league campaign. Horsham worried Leatherhead in the opening forays, but Chris Smith’s centre came to nothing. But, it was the visitors who opened the scoring – in the eighth minute

– when Eddie Dsane went down in the area, Horsham supporters feeling that Joe Shelley had played the ball and not the man. However, a penalty was awarded and Dsane made no mistake from the spot. Horsham soon had an opportunity to equalise, but Smith’s shot was aerial.
