Taste buds at the ready for Horsham’s Big Nibble 2019 The Big Nibble weekend in Horsham Town Centre is an annual celebration of locally produced food and drink, and returns this year on Saturday 31 August and Sunday 1 September with a packed line- up of events and features. Traditionally, The Big Nibble has marked the launch of a District wide month-long food and drink festival, but this year, for the first time, it is launching a year round campaign to promote all of the great food and drink experiences to be found in Horsham District across the seasons. The first of Horsham District Council’s seasonal leaflets, promoting our District’s food and drink experiences, will be distributed at the Horsham event with all the foodie experiences on offer; it can also be downloaded from www.horshamfoodies.co.uk On Saturday, The Big Nibble presents a fantastic selection of stalls: The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. The legendary Live Cookery

Theatre in the Amphitheatre, Carfax over both days returns with a brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food and restaurant chefs, singing chefs and author presentations. On Saturday only, Aperitifs in the afternoon is a new feature running 4 to 5pm – with talks and sampling from local producers and vendors and news of an exciting new local product launch. Beer and gin trails will run on both days, which encourage visitors to explore many of our town centre businesses and sample some tremendous local tipples. Hepworths sponsor the beer trail and are the starting point, Brewhouse and Kitchen are the end point and prize draw provider. The Gin Trail starts at Crates Local Produce and ends at Piries Bar who are the prize draw provider, with a distillery tour for ten people to be won. More on page 2

There will also be a great range of food related street theatre on both days to add some more amusement to proceedings. A new focus for Little Nibble Sunday This year sees Sunday showcasing a new format for our Little Nibble festival with a focus on eating well for less, no matter what your budget. We will also be focusing on eating well for one, perfect for those who live on their own and families with students about to go off to university! Additionally, the recent high profile interest in plant based and meat free eating will be featured along with sustainability issues including reduction in plastics use and refill water initiatives. The Horsham Veganfest marquee will be presenting a range of plant based food and drink options supporting those who would like to reduce their animal based food use. This is complemented by Kinder Living Horsham and friends who will have a fresh produce Smoothie Bike and plenty of tips on how to make our food and drink consumption more sustainable. Horsham Churches Together will present Messy Harvest with interactive food related activities for younger people. There will also be the first Horsham event based ‘Horsham

Food Bank Station’ located with Messy Harvest for people to make donations. Always a great spectacle, there is a special show set up in the Worthing Road Park and Ride car park, just south of the town, and old bus routes are recreated from the Carfax in the town to many outlying towns and villages in Horsham District. running costs. An additional special prize is also on offer, in the first weekly draw, for a free family meal at The Crown, Horsham. More than 65 charities community groups have, so far, applied to receive a share of the funds. Groups already registered include Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (HAODS), Henfield Youth Club, Olive Tree Cancer Support, Tigers Football Club, Pulborough Cricket Club, and the Horsham and Shipley Community Project – and many more. Ava Harding of the Olive Tree Cancer Support group is one of those who has signed up to become involved in the Community Lottery. She said: “I must say, I think it is a great idea and such an easy way to fundraise. We are a small, independent charity attached to Crawley hospital which has provided free support, advice, friendship and therapies to thousands of people in the local area. “We are also starting an outreach project in Horsham in 2019, which will run from Horsham Hospital, so we hope that being

a part of this lottery will help us to keep on providing the support that so many people need.” Cllr Kate Rowbottom, Chairman of Horsham District Council, said: “I am delighted that tickets are now on sale for our new Horsham District Community Lottery. This weekly online lottery is an innovative way to support local charities, community groups and voluntary organisations. “Over 65 groups have already applied to join the lottery, but we want as many as possible to benefit from this opportunity. It’s free to register and I encourage them to sign up before the first draw on 28 September.” The lottery is run on behalf of Horsham District Council by external provider Gatherwell, which already runs a similar scheme for many other local councils. Community groups and those wanting to buy tickets should visit www.horshamdistrictcommunitylottery.co.uk or call 01403 434010.

Horsham well and truly enchanted The magical wonderland of Enchanted Horsham took to the stage in Horsham Park over the bank holiday weekend delighting, exciting and creating a festival atmosphere in the glorious sunshine. A highlight of the Year of Culture event’s programme, the dazzling three-day family friendly festival brought to life the myths and history of Horsham, with fire breathing dragons, dinosaur and dragon bone digs, a young unicorn in training, beautiful illuminations, stunning projections, light shows, and a breathtaking fire hoopers performance. Building from last year’s successes and addressing suggestions made by past visitors, this amazing extravaganza was bigger and better than ever, with a wide range of children’s activities including sand art, wand making and dream catcher creations being hugely popular with little ones, whilst a dedicated baby change and clean up tent also provided a much welcomed facility for parents. Robin Morley, one of the Enchanted Horsham’s organizer’s said “We are absolutely delighted with the feedback we have received from this year’s event about the new and unique attractions have created. We

have always aimed to embrace the rich heritage and mystique that surrounds Horsham and for the magic to entwine its way throughout the whole event. This year’s addition of unique creatures such as Gnomus, the Guardian of the Dragon Eggs, has helped us to create even more excitement. It has been a privilege to be part of Horsham’s Year of Culture programme and we are looking forward to creating even more magic in the park next year.” Roving performers delighted the crowds as jugglers, hoop acrobatics and circus skills artists were seen across the site, and Dan the Hat drew large crowds with his ‘audience participation’ street entertainment and comedy shows that included juggling, yoyo skills a pineapple and catapult board! As dusk fell, a huge magnificent silver mechanical dragon with pyrotechnical performers heralded the opening of the illuminated gardens. And, whilst the mermaid welcomed her audience with her hauntingly magical songs at the beautifully lit pond, Park House formed the backdrop to an exceptionally creative large-scale illumination projection about Horsham’s own dinosaur, the Horshamosaurus Ruggwickensis. With many visitors returning for the second year, Tamsin

Shaw from Roffey commented “We attended last year and enjoyed the event, but this year it is amazing. I am here with both my parents and children, and we are loving the mixture of activities, entertainment, interesting stalls and food. It is rare to find an event that we can all enjoy. My daughter loves the little unicorn and her LED lit candy floss, my son the Dragon’s Eye VR headset and Drone at the At Home Estate Agents stand, and my dad is trying to convince my mum to take a turn on the dressing up charity catwalk...” For some, the highlight was the eclectic lineup of rock ‘n’ roll, reggae, jazz, ska, on the main stage, along with the extensive array of mouth-watering global street food stalls, pop-up restaurants, and bars that provided a huge variety of tempting treats for all. For me, it was the stunning creation of the Dragon’s Egg Hatchery. With the delightfully crafted dragon’s eggs that were lit from within as they surrounded the Dragon’s Blacksmith fire pit, and two performers creating enchanting music with the most unusual instruments whilst making the flames dance and change colour, it was easy to believe that magic really was in the air!

Ms Louise Higson, Farlington’s Headmistress, comments on the School’s GCSE results: ‘Congratulations to the Year 11 girls at Farlington on their wonderful GCSE examination results! With well over a third of the top 9 to 7 grades, significantly higher than the national average, there is much to celebrate. We are delighted with their performance; these brilliant results are no less than the

girls deserve and are a reflection of their hard work and desire to succeed. My appreciation and thanks go to all their teachers; their passion and commitment are key in providing the excellent teaching and support which enables the girls to achieve outstanding results across a broad range of subjects.

Pupils and staff at Christ’s Hospital are celebrating another excellent set of (I)GCSE results. This is another year in which an impressive 37% of all grades achieved were equivalent to an A*, with 64% of all grades at Agrade or above and 96% A*-C. With the new Level 9-1 grading available in more subjects, this allowed many of our most able pupils to achieve the top grade. 117 grades out of the all grades awarded were the top Level 9, equating to 15% of the cohort. Strong performances are noted in Mathematics and Science, with 74.2% of all Maths grades

achieved being equivalent to a Level 7 or higher; in Triple Science, 69% of all grades achieved were equivalent to a Level 7 or higher and in English 91% of grades achieved were A*-B. Included in these results there are some hugely impressive individual performances including 30 Pupils who achieved at least 10 A or A* grades out of a cohort of 121 and 24 Pupils achieved at least 8 A*. Special congratulations should go to: Theodore Murton 12 A* (7 of which were at Level 9) Sophie Lambert 11 A* (5 at level

Katherine Linaker 11 A*, 1 A (4 at level 9) Imani Tokpanoude 10 A* (6 at level 9) Felix Adena 10 A* (3 at level 9) Aidan Caunter 10 A*, 2 A (1 at level 9) Manon Howard 10 A*, 1 A (1 at level 9) Cameron Smith 10 A*, 1 B (4 at level 9) These results and achievements are made all the more remarkable given the new, more challenging specifications and terminal examinations after recent reforms. Simon Reid, Headmaster of Christ’s Hospital commented, “Considering the journey that many of our pupils will have undertaken to get to this point, these are inspirational results. They and their teachers deserve loud praise for them. It is always easy to show that individuals have achieved at the ‘top’ end; however, unwaveringly light must also be shone on the many people in this cohort who did not gain an A* or A-grade but whose results reflect their very best. Christ’s Hospital will continue to be proud of its GCSE pupils because they embrace their school journey, negotiate its hurdles, and almost always emerge having done their very best.

Another Great GCSE Year for The Towers

The Towers proudly announces yet another year of excellent GCSE results, in which the girls achieved an extremely impressive 98.3% Level 9 to 4. Every single girl is to be congratulated on her hard work and determination to do her very best. Two notable success stories are Kira Freeman, who achieved 10 GCSEs at Level 9, 1

at Level 8 and an A in Additional Mathematics and Madelaine Parmar, who secured 9 GCSEs with 7 at Level 9, 1 at Level 8, 1 at Level 7 and a C in Additional Mathematics. Council launches new accessibility scheme for town centre events A new scheme called Our Town Bands Together is set to launch in Horsham on 31 August at the annual Big Nibble food festival. Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens have teamed up with the town’s Butterfly Project and Our Town initiative to increase the accessibility of town events for vulnerable residents and visitors. Horsham town centre events attract a high number of visitors, which can be stressful for some people.

Our Town Bands Together is a new initiative for people who feel they would benefit from subtly identifying themselves to event exhibitors and staff at town centre events by wearing a special lanyard. In doing so, it will highlight to those working at the event that the wearer may need extra time or support. Following the success of a trial with members of the Butterfly Project at the Piazza Italia event earlier this year, this initiative is

now being rolled out for Horsham District Council events across Horsham Town Centre. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: ‘I’m pleased to say that Horsham town is a friendly and supportive place to live and visit with most people, shops and stalls always ready and willing to help somebody needing assistance. “What this initiative does is give vulnerable people the confi-

dence to know that there is help at hand if they need it. “The aim is to encourage people to be considerate of additional support that town visitors may require specifically during events. Those involved with the event are aware of the lanyard’s meaning and have been given guidance on how to help in the right way.” A spokesperson from the Butterfly Project added: “The lanyard can be used for all sorts of reasons, including hidden disabilities such as dementia or autism or even if English isn’t your first language. “There will also be a stall run by

the Butterfly Project at town centre events with Our Town Bands Together ambassadors handing out the lanyards.” The lanyards are free and available to everyone. They can be picked up on the day of the event and returned to the Butterfly Project stall or information stand. Our Town Bands Together will be launched on Saturday 31 August in Horsham Town Centre at the Big Nibble, a food and drink festival organised by Horsham District Council. While G7 leaders debate the wildfires ravaging the Amazon Rainforest, environmental groups closer to home are planning to raise local awareness by mounting a ‘Climate Emergency’ exhibition in Horsham on Saturday 21 September. The exhibition will be in the extensive gardens of Horsham’s Unitarian Church which, in association with its neighbouring Quaker Meeting House, has taken a leading role in supporting local environmental groups and the Unitarian church hall will, on Wednesday 4 September, be the venue for the launch of Horsham’s branch of Extinction Rebellion. Particularly notable among Sussex action groups represented will be the South East Climate Alliance, (SECA https://seclimatealliance.

uk) – the recently-formed and increasingly influential coalition mobilising local environment, community and faith groups across the South East for urgent action on climate change and calling on all local councils to declare a Climate Emergency. District Post readers will have seen our report of Horsham District Council’s 26 June meeting, where the motion to declare a Climate Emergency - a step taken by over 85 other local authorities throughout Britain –was defeated. September’s exhibition, as well as offering guidance on sustainability measures which we all can take, will also serve as a reminder to HDC of the need for positive measures on the alternative ‘Year of Action’ proposal adopted at that June meeting.

Bid a heart-warming farewell to HeART to Heart As the HeART to Heart trail enters its final weeks, St Catherine’s Hospice is looking forward to bringing all the hearts together, at their Farewell Exhibition in October, for a heart-warming final celebration. The local hospice’s community art trail has captured the hearts of everyone involved, from the artists and sponsors, to children, adults and even four-legged friends in the local community. Since launching the trail at the start of July, St Catherine’s has seen thousands of people head out to visit the hearts and collect exclusive rewards from the HeART to Heart app. Now, the local community will

have the opportunity to see all the hearts for one last time. The Farewell Exhibition, taking place on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 October 2019, is the only chance to see all of the stunning hearts together in one location, at the Copthorne Hotel Effingham Gatwick. Come along to get your final pictures, collect any hearts you may have missed on the trail, and pick up exclusive HeART to Heart merchandise in support of your local hospice. The exhibition will also give the public the opportunity to meet some of the talented HeART to Heart artists and hear more about the inspiration behind their designs, as well as why taking part

in the trail has meant so much to them. The artists have taken part in the trail for a variety of reasons and each heart has its own unique story. Caroline Collins is one of the artists of Fluttering Free, along with four others who make up the Cowfold Ladies. She is also a Staff Nurse on the Inpatient Unit at St Catherine’s Hospice, so has seen, first hand, the difference their care can make. Caroline said: “It was special to us that our heart was named Fluttering Free as we feel butterflies really symbolise what we try to do at St Catherine’s; you want to look after people but you also want them to be free to be able to do

what they want to do. It’s been really great to be involved with the whole organisation of making the hearts and lots of the conversations that we’ve had have been very therapeutic with some of our own losses that we’ve experienced too. It’s been a really wonderful project and I’m so glad that other people are enjoying it as well.” Tickets to the Farewell Exhibition are limited and expected to sell fast, so make sure you book early at www.stch.org.uk/exhibition. The exhibition will be open from 11am to 8pm on the Friday and 10am to 6pm on the Saturday. After this, there will be the chance for people to take one of the beautiful hearts home forever

at an exclusive live auction on Wednesday 30 October 2019. To register your interest in attending the auction, please email heart@ stch.org.uk. The money raised through the Farewell Exhibition and Auction will provide care to local terminally ill people when it’s needed most. Currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three local people, but with the support of people like you, in the future the local charity wants to make sure no one has to face death and loss alone. For further information about the trail, please visit: www.stch. org.uk/hearts

Peter Sutton, Managing Director at PMW Communications, commented: “Our team works extremely hard to develop creative ideas that produce tangible results for our clients and I’m delighted that its efforts have been recognised by the judges for the Third Sector Awards. “The campaign resonated with schools and, due to its success, we’re continuing to work with the charity to target more schools and help it raise awareness about the importance of reducing the amount of clothing items being

Having recently been named on Real Business’s list of the Top 25 SME Culture Leaders for 2019, Billingshurst marketing agency PMW Communications is celebrating once again, after being shortlisted in the prestigious Third Sector Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of charities and the work done to make a real difference to society. PMW is a finalist in the Communications Agency of the Year category for a project it ran on behalf of the Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd.

The agency was tasked with promoting the charity’s Recycle with Michael scheme, which encourages young people to think about the vast amount of textiles that are sent to landfill each year. PMW aimed to inspire 100 schools from across 13 counties to sign up to collect items for recycling. The campaign was such a success that 236 schools took part, with over 64,000 pupils donating 68 tonnes of textiles. This included 7,299 pupils from 27 Sussex-based schools who collected 8.45 tonnes between them, which is the equivalent of 16 grand pianos.

Our team works extremely hard to develop creative ideas that produce tangible results for our clients... sent to landfill. “We look forward to attending the awards ceremony and celebrating the fantastic work done by charities across the UK.” The Third Sector Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 19 September at the Marriott Grosvenor Square Hotel in London when the winners will be announced.

WW Coach Lisa opens new Wellness Workshop after losing 50lbs

Lisa suffers Deep Vein thrombosis (DVT), a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein that’s located deep inside your body: “ After having our son in 2013, I developed DVT and I was advised by

the consultant to get my weight to sit within my healthy range. I did this and the clot was cleared. However, in July 2016, after having our daughter, the clot returned and has not been cleared. I’m now living with DVT.

“The thought of not being able to walk, the possibility of having to have my leg amputated and, ultimately, not being here for my husband and children, pushed me to get into action” Lisa started her own wellness journey in 2016 and, since then, has achieved her gold membership in January 2017, and has helped lots of members lose weight and many achieve their goals. Lisa has been a coach for 2 years in October and has been running her workshops for 19 months. From September, she will be running 9 workshops in total. Inspiring healthy habits for real life, WW offers the most flexible and livable programme ever. It encourages you to enjoy food with freedom, find what moves you physically, and gives you the skills to shift your mindset so you can focus on what really matters on your weight loss journey - taking

care of yourself and living your life the way you want to. Lisa explained her success: “I think because I could follow the program online, but when I needed the extra support I was able to attend a workshop - that helped. And I also love that we don’t just focus on food, getting more active was one of the things that also motivated me, I needed to get fitter to help with my health, and working on my mindset to change habits are what have kept me within my goal window. “Previous to having my children, I never saw myself as being over weight, but now looking back I wish I had realized sooner that I was, slightly. “I have an extremely sweet tooth and healthy habits are what I have had to work on throughout my journey. But the realization you don’t have to give sweets or anything up really helped” Now, she is bringing the leading programme to help those in the Horsham area: “It feels great to be able to support my members and share their journey with

13 Top Tips for Writing your CV This year’s batch of students have now received their exam results and, for some, the world of work beckons. One CEO has shared her tips for writing a stellar CV. Anita Tweats, Business Leader and CEO of financial recruitment experts The Finance People has detailed everything from controversial topics, such as photographs and social media handles, to structural issues, such as summaries and subheadings. Common issues which arise when writing CV’s come from knowing what to include, and what doesn’t need to be on the page. Anita said: “Writing your first CV can be very daunting but most importantly, you need to make sure all the key information is included, and it’s easy to find. “Reading a big block of text isn’t fun for anybody, so make sure you signpost the reader to Suzanne Travers where they can find the inforMarketing Manager mation – sub-headings are a great idea”. These are The Finance People’s 13 top tips for writing a CV: 1 Don’t add a photo. Although it can be argued that it allows employers to get a first impression from you, this also means that they can make judgements from your image, which could be either positive or negative. 2 Your date of birth should also be omitted due to it being another diversity factor. 3 Your CV should be no longer than two pages. If it’s any longer, you’re not writing succinctly enough. 4 Use LinkedIn – if employers are interested in you this is a fantastic way to find out a little bit more and what you get up to in your professional life. 5 Social Media – unless it’s relevant for your industry, such as social media management, photography or journalism, potential employers aren’t going to enjoy your selfies, so leave your

them. Seeing real habit changes that make a big difference to their confidence, lifestyle and overall well being”. WW Wellness Coaches go through five weeks of extensive training, that includes face to face workshops with guidance from WW Wellness Coach. Throughout their journey, Wellness Coaches complete their course with an eLearning assessment that has been certified by the Association for Nutrition (AfN), meaning our members get the best knowledge to support their wellness journey. Commenting on the launch of the new WW workshop, WW Wellness Coach Lisa, said: “WW helped me to reach my wellness goals by guiding me towards healthy choices, both in food and real life, and I am excited to be able to share this with new and existing members in Horsham.” Lisa’s group opens on the 6 September and will meet at Horsham Salvation Army every Friday at 17:30. To find out more about WW, visit www.ww.com/uk

social handles off of your CV. 6 Ethnicity or religious choices don’t need to be displayed on your CV. If employers are monitoring diversity statistics, they will probably include their own questions as part of the application process. 7 Don’t put your address on your CV. Subconsciously, employers could favour someone closer to the role over someone who has to move. If necessary, a town or area name would suffice. 8 Ensure you have a sentence or two summarising yourself as a person. This is your chance to put some personality across and sell yourself before the employer looks further down the CV. 9 You should alter your CV every time you apply for a new job. If you can change your CV so that it matches words in the job specification it shows that you can tick these boxes and that you’re motivated enough to take the time to look into the company. 10 Do write in formal English. There’s a time and place for shortening words such as ‘don’t’ or ‘you’re’, but your CV isn’t one of these. Write as you would if writing an essay, to show you’re acknowledging the formality of the proceedings. 11 Do make your CV stand out. This can seem difficult when there seems to be so many ‘rules’ surrounding CVs but adding a bit of colour and thinking about the design of your CV can help you stick in the mind of an employer. 12 Get to the point! If you can’t reduce a long sentence to a couple of words, it’s probably too descriptive and can be removed. 13 Subheadings make sure you’re keeping your points relevant and also act as a great pointer for anyone reading your CV. If they’re looking for a specific fact about you, they can go straight to it, instead of having to read through a whole block of text.

Growing your business in a down turn

This month our Award Winning Business expert, Janette Whitney gives advice on how to get through the BREXIT economic uncertainty janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

Running a successful business in a stagnant market and/or economic downturn requires an appreciation of two distinct roles, managing the day to day operations and building for the future. Every business person needs to know the importance of both ‘hats’- and when they are wearing each one. Some companies do well, both in good times and bad. They not only withstand the onslaught of an economic downturn, but they emerge stronger and fitter. Unsurprisingly, they also make the right choices when economies are growing. HOW DO THEY DO IT? Irrespective of the state of the economy, companies which regularly beat the competition have an ingrained ability to do two conflicting things at the same time. They run the day job ef-

fectively and efficiently and they make the right choices on how to grow. These require different, conflicting management styles: relentless detailed operational control, as well as having an eye for the main op-

aggressive cost control and revenue chasing. But while there is a major focus on running the day job, successful companies also know how to build for the future. Retaining an eye for the opportunity in the good times is relatively easy; keeping it when it gets tough is vastly more difficult. Successful companies operate with two ‘hats’. One hat – the operational hat- focuses on delivering immediate needs, driving revenues, costs and margins to meet cash and profit targets. The focus is on the known- we know what the market is, what customers want, what competitors offer. The other hat – the strategic hat- focuses on growth, driving long term sustainable business that predicts and responds to customer trends and opportunities. Here the management

portunity. Being great at both things is essential to long-term managed success. Without clear growth management, companies often end up doing the urgent and forgetting the important. This is most true in a stagnant market, when the extra focus on cash drives

style tends to be openness and analysis of opportunities. Critically, running the day job and delivering sustainable growth requires that both these different styles of capability and approach co-exist in the same organisation. In essence a successful business must be able to wear these 2 hats comfortably.

STR A TEGI

The challenge comes when you are a small business and you are the sole owner/director and have the skills & aptitude of one of the ‘hats’ but not necessarily the other- this is when the input of a professional adviser is vital to help give you the perspective of the other ‘hat’.

The bestselling children’s author David Walliams and the awardwinning Birmingham Stage Company have teamed up again for a brand-new production of Billionaire Boy. This will be their third collaboration after the Olivier Award nominated Gangsta Granny and acclaimed Awful Auntie productions. Billionaire Boy started life as a David Walliams novel for

children in 2010, published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, and was filmed for the BBC in 2016. As part of a major national tour the stage adaptation OPENS at The Capitol in Horsham on Thursday 26 and runs until Sunday 29 September. Billionaire Boy tells the story of Joe Spud, who is twelve years old and the richest boy in the country.

He has his own sports car, two crocodiles as pets and £100,000 a week pocket money. But what Joe doesn’t have is a friend. So he decides to leave his posh school and start at the local comp. But things don’t go as planned for Joe and life becomes a rollercoaster as he tries to find what money can’t buy! David Walliams has become one of today’s most influential writers. Since the publication of his first novel, The Boy in the Dress (2008), illustrated by the iconic Sir Quentin Blake, David Walliams has celebrated more than ten years of writing success, with global sales exceeding thirty-two million copies, and his books have been translated into fifty-three languages. David’s titles have spent 138 weeks (non-consecutive) at the top of the children’s charts – more than any other children’s author ever. He closed 2018 as the UK’s biggest-selling author for the second year running. In addition to his fiction, David has worked with Tony Ross on six picture books as well as three bestselling short-story collections, The World’s Worst Children. Ahead of the latest release, David said: “I absolutely loved the BSC’s terrific productions of Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie so I can’t wait to see their brand-new production of

Billionaire Boy! It promises to be a brilliant show!” Neal Foster is the adapter and director of Billionaire Boy. He is the Actor/Manager of The Birmingham Stage Company which, since its foundation in 1992, has staged over eighty productions. The company has become one of the world’s leading producers of theatre for children and their families, including Horrible Histories Live on Stage for fourteen years in the UK, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia. Neal has written and directed all of the most recent Horrible Histories shows, including the Barmy Britain series seen in the West End, across the UK, and abroad. Billionaire Boy will be his third David Walliams stage show, after Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie. In 2019, he directed the world premiere of Tom Gates, which he also adapted alongside author of the books, Liz Pichon. Billionaire Boy is adapted and directed by Neal Foster, designed by Jackie Trousdale, lighting by Jason Taylor, sound by Nick Sagar and music by Jak Poore. As well as top stand up, we have perfect plays to tickle the funny bone, with Hot Flush and Hormonal Housewives offering up an evening of sisterhood, solidarity and humour. And we’re also offering something a little different; how about Sh*t-Faced Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream? The show is exactly what it sounds like. An entirely serious performance of

the bard’s work, with one entirely drunk cast member… what could go wrong? Whatever it is, it’ll be hilarious. The music for the season offers up everything from A History of Rock to a trip through Boogie Wonderland, as well as 80s favourites Shalamar and tributes to Abba, George Michael, Carole King, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Little Mix, sharing the music of bands past and present, live on stage for one night only. For those with more classical tastes The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Italian Romance celebrates Italy’s rich orchestral history while the beauty of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly will capture the hearts of anyone who sees it. There is even more classical entertainment, this time in the form of dance, The Russian State Ballet perform The Nutcracker and Swan Lake in October and Swan Lake makes a welcome return alongside Sleeping Beauty in the new year, this time performed by St Petersburg Classic Ballet. Musical fans can see if the Sun’ll Come Out Tomorrow when Annie hits the stage, starring Lesley Joseph and Buddy, the world’s most successful Rock and

Roll Musical comes to town. Audiences will also want to get their vocals warmed up as two film musicals come to The Hawth with the Sing-a-long-a treatment. The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody will be shown with on screen lyrics so fans can sing along and even get into the spirit in fancy dress too. As ever there are plenty of events for families to enjoy with a children’s operatic performance of picture book favourite, Peace at Last, a hilarious adventure with music and puppets in Hey Diddle Diddle and Star in the Jar warming everyone’s hearts in the lead up to Christmas. Of course, we also have the perfect festive treat in Dick Whittington. The

biggest and best pantomime in Sussex this year stars EastEnders’ Charlie Brooks alongside Gemma Hunt (Cbeebies’ Swashbuckle) and David Ribi (Channel 5’s Milkshake!). Join us for a fabulous rag-to-riches tale with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and showstopping songs and dance numbers for all the family. As always there are fantastic films, live screening and exhibitions to look forward to in The Hawth Cinema. Celebrating Horsham District’s Radical Heroes in the Year of Culture

Friday 16 August, marked the 200 years anniversary of the Peterloo massacre, an event that took place in Manchester and marked a key moment in the democratic evolution of our country. Horsham’s year of Culture provides us with an opportunity to celebrate, in a timely manner, two key figures with important associations with the event and the radical movement of that time, both with connections with Horsham District. Henry ‘Orator’ Hunt, the great radical speaker of that time whose attendance at the rally, which became the Peterloo Massacre,

attracted thousands to hear him speak about social and parliamentary reform, is buried in St. Peter’s churchyard, Parham. The great romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, born in Horsham District, wrote the great radical poem, ‘The Mask of Anarchy’, which immortalised the events that took place that day in Manchester. ‘The Mask of Anarchy’ will be one of the poems featured in an evening of radical poetry and music organised by the ‘Shelley Memorial Project’, taking place at the College of Richard Collyer on the evening of 20 September. ‘Attila the Stockbroker on Shelley’ features Sussex’s modern

day, radical, social, surrealist poet and musician, Attila the Stockbroker, performing Shelley’s radical poems alongside his own work. The event will also include a performance of songs from Attila’s critically acclaimed album ‘Restoration Tragedy’ which combines early music and punk with songs about English radical movements. Watch out for Crumhorn, recorder, mandola and sausage bassoon! Carol Hayton, a founding member of the Shelley Memorial Project, explained: “This special evening will demonstrate the enduring power of poetry to highlight the key social issues of our time and will encourage us all to think more deeply about them.” For tickets or more information about this event which is set to be one of the highlights of the Year of Culture fringe, visit https:// www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/attilathe-stockbroker-on-shelley-anevening-of-radical-poetry-andmusic-tickets-66622306111 or email carolhayton@btinternet. com This is a fund-raising event for the The Shelley Memorial Project, whose objective is to promote the work of the radical poet and to provide a lasting memorial to Shelley here in Horsham. If you would like to know more about the project, please contact Carol Hayton at the above email address.

News of Horsham and Roffey’s junior sides Saturday August 24 – Feeder team round up Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey seconds were set 234 to win by Steyning 1st XI, for whom skipper Oliver Collins made a better than a run a ball 110, with 42 in support from Christopher Barnett, Fred Bridges and Leigh Harrison taking two wickets

apiece. Roffey’s first three batsmen were all in the runs, Anish Padalkar making 56, with thirties from Chris Webb and Sachin Naik before a rapid unbeaten 58 from Harrison gave Roffey a four wicket win, confirming Roffey’s promotion. Horsham Trinity 2nds hosted Roffey thirds and put them in to bat, but it backfired, Roffey posting a sufficient 210-5 off their

sponsored by

40 overs, skipper Josh Kennedy opening the innings with 84, with mid order support from Kyle Fairs (44), extras contributing 43 valuable runs. When Trinity responded, Jim Barnes dismissed opener Glyn Horsley, but then Chris Whittick and Josh Bailey gave Trinity a real chance with 63 and 52, respectively. But after Jake Humphreys dismissed them both Trinity fell away, six of the subsequent batsmen scoring only 11 runs between

them as Jake Humphreys with 4-18, Lewis Shivnarain (2-34) and Jim Barnes (2-37) worked their way through Trinity’s line up securing the hard-fought 16 run win for Roffey, with just a single ball of the match remaining. Roffey thirds are also promoted. It was another close finish at Faygate, where Roffey 4ths tied with Barns Green thirds after being all out for 155 from 39.4

overs, the match ending with the scores level, Barns Green hanging on with nine wickets down, third-placed Roffey 4ths just missing out on promotion. Cut adrift at the foot of the table and relegated, Horsham 2nd XI were unable to field a side against their Three Bridges counterparts, while Horsham thirds had no scheduled game, but are also relegated.

Premier League round up – matches on Sat August 24th Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter On the penultimate Saturday of the Premier League programme, Brighton & Hove elected to bat at Cuckfield and put on a commanding 205 for the first wicket, Sussex’s Luke Wells entertaining with another big century – this time 134 from 101 balls, including 11 fours and 9 sixes. Wells’ opening partner Bryce Hounsome made 85, but despite wickets falling, Marcus Campopiano taking five, Brighton still managed to get to 359, a daunting target. For Cuckfield, former Horsham player Joe Ludlow scored 134, but 47 from Ben Caidan and 34 from Joe White were the only other batting highlights, five Brighton bowlers sharing the wickets, Matthew Wood headlining with 3-33. Brighton remain a distant second, while Cuckfield are eighth, but safe from relegation. At the Saffrons Three Bridges batted first and Ben Twine took

two wickets without a run on the board. But, wicketkeeper Joe Walker and Adam Jones with 75 and 91respectively ensured that Bridges posted 2408. Eastbourne looked handily placed at 81-1, but once James Hockley was out (for 44), David Twine with 35 was the next highest scorer, Eastbourne falling 30 runs short, Adam Jones, Archit Patel and Michael Rose all taking three wickets. Three Bridges are now third and Eastbourne seventh. Mayfield were promoted into the Premier League last season, but defeat at the hands of fourth-placed Preston Nomads at Fulking sealed their return to Division 2 after they scored an inadequate 161 all out, mid order 30s from Callum Saker and David Hooper being the only scores of note, Navin Patel taking the bowling honours with 3-24. Nomads romped home with more than 21 overs to spare, thanks to 71 from Nathan Poole and thirties from Jake Hutson and skipper Daniel Phillips.

Billingshurst overcome by title chasing Haywards Hth Saturday August 24 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Haywards Heath 278-7 (45 overs) Billingshurst 163 all out (32.5 overs) Haywards Heath won by 115 runs. Haywards Heath 30 points Billingshurst 9 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At their Clair Park ground, Haywards Heath won the toss, and, batting first, posted a very testing score from their 45 over allocation, with 70s from opener Jethro Menzies and the unbeaten Max Barson. For Billingshurst, skipper Ben Mortimer and Louis Storey were the most successful bowlers with two wickets each. If Billingshurst were to chase down 279 runs they had to start well, and at 66-1 they had created a good platform, only for wickets to fall at

regular intervals. From 129-6 there was to be no redemption, Callum Smith and Jonny Phelps whittling away the middle and lower order with 7-70 between them, the last four wickets evaporating for the same number of runs. Will Crombie top-scored with 34 and there were twenties from Storey, Scott Stratton, and Max Hollander, but it needed someone to bat through and Billingshurst ended 116 runs short of the target. On Saturday fifth-placed Billingshurst return home to Jubilee Fields for their final match of the season, against relegation threatened Burgess Hill, just 13 points above Goring, who are in the drop zone. Ifield have already been relegated again after being in the Premiership last season, and Hastings look likely to bounce straight back to the top flight after just one Division 2 campaign - along with either Bognor or Haywards Heath.

Entertaining Horsham win final home game Saturday August 24 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Horsham 291-8 (50 overs) – East Grinstead 278 all out (49) Horsham won by 13 runs Horsham 30 points - East Grinstead 13 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter In June at Saint Hill, Horsham restricted East Grinstead to 223, but could not quite hold out for a draw, Horsham’s last wicket falling on the final available ball of the game, and the return fixture in Horsham’s last appearance at Cricketfield Road this season was another closefought, entertaining game, Horsham winning with an over to spare. Horsham won the toss and batted first, Tom Haines departed quickly, but fellow opener Nick Oxley, fresh from England twelfth man duty at Lord’s, made 45. The subsequent batting all contributed

solidly, skipper Michael Thornely leading the way with 58, supported by thirties from Joe Willis and Tom Clark and twenties from James Brehaut, wicketkeeper Sam Bell and Paul Williams, despite William Taylor’s 4 wickets. Replying, East Grinstead got off to a patchy start, Brehaut taking three of the first four wickets, and later propelling a bail half way to the boundary when trimming Bradley Hatchett’s stumps. But, from that unpromising 72-4 they consolidated through Will Adkin (62) and Toby Margetts (37), and, especially Darryl Rebbetts, and at 265-7, with the run rate under control, the game appeared to be heading Grinstead’s way. However, Sussex’s George Garton was brought back for the 46th over, and, bowling with real fire from the railway end, he induced Rebbetts to spoon a catch back to him, Rebbetts departing just five runs short of a deserved century. Haines returned for the next over and conceded just five runs, leaving Grinstead needing 21

from the last three overs. Garton then took another wicket, with, crucially, only a single run coming off the over. Williams delivered the penultimate over and, from the final ball, encouraged by a fumble, Taylor embarked on a suicidal second run, Tom Clark’s throw running him out by a street to give Horsham their third home win of the campaign. Michael Thornely told the District Post: “Its such a good wicket at Horsham, so I thought we might be a little short, but James (Brehaut) bowled well again, as he has done for the last few weeks, and it makes such a difference having Garton and Haines in the side.” On Saturday in the final weekend of the season, relegated Horsham play their last game in the Sussex Premier League for the time being when they visit Brighton & Hove. Earlier in the season, when Brighton were top of the table, Horsham beat them by 9 wickets and would dearly love to go out in a blaze of glory by completing a double over the seasiders.

Champions Roffey inflict heavy defeat on Middleton Saturday August 24 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Roffey 288-9 (50 overs) Middleton 172 all out (38.3 overs) Roffey won by 116 runs– Roffey 30 points – Middleton 10 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey escaped with a nail-biting draw when the teams met at their Crawley Road Ground in June, but last Saturday’s return fixture was much more one-sided – a big win for Roffey. Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Roffey got off to an excellent start, putting on 109 for the first wicket, Theo Rivers being first out for 39. His opening partner Ben Manenti was dismissed – for 69 – with just one run added, but Roffey recovered to 202-3 thanks to forties from Rohit Jagota and Mike Norris, skipper Matt Davies following up with 32. Three ducks followed,

opening bowler Russell Talman returning to hollow out the lower order after Matthew Reynolds had taken four of the first five wickets, but Roffey still posted a challenging 289 run target. Much depended on whether they could dispose of Middleton skipper Sean Heather and Pune Warriors’ IPL player Mahesh Rawat sufficiently cheaply, the pair dominating Middleton performances week after week – among other centuries this season, Rawat scored a superb unbeaten 151 at Roffey in June. Middleton got off to a sticky start, George Fleming dismissing Harry Hovey, but they regrouped and were reasonably well-placed at 73-2, but were promptly reduced to 89-5, a rare bowl from Rivers – only his second league spell of the season - securing the prized wicket of Rawat (41) from a top-edged sweep caught by Alex Collins on the boundary, and another victim, going on to take 3-35, Jagota having previously dismissed Heather. A 54 run

New season Grays and Kookaburra hockey in stock. Canterbury & Gilbert rugby boots and protective gear in stock. Updating of annual cups and awards engraved on-site

sixth wicket stand was a minor inconvenience, the subsequent flurry of wickets reducing Middleton to the depths of 158-9, from where there was only one possible outcome, Alex Collins mopping up the tail with 2-6. After his excellent all round game – runs, wickets and two catches – Theo Rivers told the District Post: “Although no one went really big for us we got a strong score and for them to win two of their batsman had to bat well. What was particularly pleasing was that, having already won the league, there was no sign of complacency, we really wanted to win.”On Saturday Champions Roffey – looking to finish their league programme as the only unbeaten side - return home for their final league game of the season when they entertain eighth-placed Cuckfield, whom they beat in June’s corresponding away fixture after bowling them out for 123.

YMCA post three goal lead Late goal edges and then hold off Loxwood BBH out of FA Cup

Saturday August 20th – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Loxwood 3 4 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was an entertaining, exciting game on a good pitch at Loxwood’s pleasant country ground – a bit too exciting for Horsham YMCA supporters from the mid point of the second half, when

Loxwood were coming on strong and threatening to equalise or even snatch victory, but YM kept them out to win fair and square. YM started briskly, Jack Frankland’s early strike going straight to Loxwood keeper Liam Matthews, but a goal soon followed when Tony Nwachukwu was upended without sanction, the ball going up field before it was returned to Nwachukwu, whose shot was parried, and after pinball action the lively Martin Smith tapped in to give YM the

lead. Smith continued to worry the Loxwood defence with a shot saved by Matthews’ feet and a header pushed off for a corner. After Frankland headed wide a Loxwood corner was scrambled in by Matthew Boiling against the run of play and suddenly the hosts had more possession, but YM retook the lead through Luke Gedling in the 26th minute, the score remaining 2-1 in YM’s favour at the break, despite both sides having further chances. Shortly after the restart YM went further ahead, Matt Daniel’s shot being deflected off Matthews, and when Smith blazed in a rocket from the right into the top corner, at 4-1 with YM looking dangerous in attack and Loxwood appearing fragile at the back, surely the contest was over. But, more than half an hour remained and the deficit had a galvanising effect on Loxwood – they fired wide, and had an attack fended off for a corner, before YM’s Dan Evans made a close-quarter clearance. YM did respond, but Loxwood got through down the left, crossing for Alfie Gritt to put the ball in from three yards. Then, 10 minutes later, Gritt found the net again and YM’s advantage had been reduced to 4-3 with 10 minutes of full time left. Corners followed at either end, before YM keeper Aaron Jeal caught a set piece curler. YM, though, were also pressing with a header and a hooked shot by Smith going over, but two late Loxwood free kicks jangled YM’s nerves, the second mercifully adrift, heralding the final whistle - music to much-relieved YM’s ears. YM Chairman Geoff Foreman told the District Post: “That was a tough game! We worked hard to get three well-earned points – welcome back Martin Smith!” While Loxwood’s assessment was: “So far this season we’ve scored six goals at home without winning – we donated the ball too easily at the start of the second half giving away goals, we can’t afford to be so generous.”

Heath disappointed with draw Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Saltdean United 1 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Andy Crisp Since their return to the top division Saltdean United have had the better over Steve Painter’s Broadbridge Heath, seven times the teams have played each other and Heath have suffered seven defeats. And, the Bears were missing skipper Tom Howard-Bold, Josh Tuck, Max Howell, Renato Carvalho and Fraser Trigwell, so expectations prior to the match were not too high. Painter gave a starting debut to Under 18 player Cameron Watts who had put in some good performances in recent weeks and the youngster did not let his Manager down with an assist for the first goal after only 12 minutes play. Alfie Jones started the move playing a ball down the

left flank to Watts, who turned a defender inside-out before picking out Jamie Taylor 14 yards from goal for the striker to fire a perfect right foot curler into the top corner of the net, out of reach of Saltdean goalkeeper Tyler D’Cruz. Continuing to push forward in search of a second, Heath’s George Cousins was unlucky with a low right foot shot that D’Cruz deflected brilliantly, inches wide of the post. After good work by Taylor, Watts came close again, but his shot was just wide. In between, Saltdean’s Ross Smith should have equalized, but his effort from a right wing cross was off-target with the goal at his mercy, and it remained 1-0 at the break. Heath continued the second period in similar vein, Andy Waddingham being first with a goal attempt, but his effort flew high over the crossbar and D’Cruz was soon in action again, diving low to his right to deny Cousins. Then, on 60 minutes the home team was

reduced to 10 players when Danny Turner was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Lee Carney. But, instead of taking advantage of the extra man, it was the home side who started to play with more style and panache, and they drew level in the 70th minute when much-travelled Alex Laing headed in a left wing cross from close range. Laing almost made it two in the final minutes, but his fierce strike was parried by Evento in the Heath goal, the ball coming out to substitute Max Bickell, who was denied by Evento throwing himself in to block the shot. After the match Painter was disappointed that Heath had failed to capitalize when their numerical advantage provided an opportunity to win. He felt his team was the better side until Turner was sent off, when, instead of taking control of the game, they stopped playing through midfield and played too many long balls up to Jamie Taylor, allowing Saltdean to regroup.

Saturday August 24 – FA Cup Preliminary Round Hastings United 2 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath’s debut appearance against BetVictor Isthmian South League’s Hastings United at their Pilots Field ground ended in disappointment, but it was a close run thing, with Heath holding their higher league opponents 1-1 deep into the second half, only for a late goal to deny the Bears. Hastings might have had the lion’s share of possession, but they created few difficulties for Heath’s defence, neither side having many goal scoring opportunities. But, just before half time, Hastings went in front when Ben Pope scored following Jack Dixon’s shot being averted, the score remaining 1-0 in the East Sussex hosts’ favour. On the resumption Heath mounted an attack, but Jamie

Taylor’s strike went past the post. Heath, though, did not have too much longer to wait for parity, skipper Tom Howard-Bold latching onto a free kick on the right to head home at the far post. Then, with a replay beckoning, Pope struck again, slotting home from close quarters in culmination of a foray down the right wing, obliging disappointed Heath to be content with the losers’ £960 pay cheque. Fixture change – Heath’s scheduled league away game against Bagshot this Saturday has been switched to Sunday because the hosts ground share at Camberley Town, whose pitch is not available on Saturday. Then, on Tuesday evening, September 3rd, Heath return to cup action – in the Peter Bentley League Cup - when Loxwood visit. In their previous recent encounter (August 6th) Heath drew 2-2 in the league against Loxwood in the first ever game at their new Countrywide Stadium home.

Wonder Weller delivers Heath’s first win Tuesday August 20th Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 0 Alfold Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Broadbridge Heath got their season in the Southern Combination Premier Division up and running with a narrow 1-0 victory over previously unbeaten Alfold. Heath welcomed back Josh Tuck at centre-half to play alongside Marlon Maxwell with Alfie Jones dropping to the bench, changes to the team that earned a draw at Saltdean three days earlier. But, Jones did not have to wait too long to enter the action with Maxwell pulling up injured with only 10 minutes played. Heath started well, with plenty of possession in the opposition half but were unable to break down the visitors’ defence marshalled by former Heath favourite and Alfold skipper Andy Howard, still putting in solid performances at the heart of defence almost 20 years after first making his appearance for the Bears. The best chance of the half came on 12

minutes when Jamie Taylor split the defence with an inch perfect through ball allowing Cameron Watts to cut in from the left, and with the Alfold keeper narrowing the angle the youngster placed his shot wide of the keeper but was denied his first senior goal when the ball rebounded off the inside of the post and back to the keeper, keeping the score goal-less at the break. The second half continued in similar vein with Heath having most of the possession, but the pace of the visitors’ forwards was always a danger on the counter-attack. The only goal of the game came on 55 minutes and it was worth paying the entrance fee to see it – from 30 yards out Scott Weller hit a screamer that flew into the top corner giving the Alfold keeper no chance. Further setbacks followed for the Bears when first George Cousins limped out of the game with a groin strain, Josh Tuck following soon afterwards, but despite those injuries Heath held on and to record their first three point tally of the season, moving up to 13th place.

Horsham cane Tower Hamlets six of the best in the FA Cup Photos by John Lines

Saturday August 24 – FA Cup Preliminary Round Tower Hamlets 1 6 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Under the shadow of the Canary Wharf skyscrapers last Saturday, Horsham turned up the heat on Essex Senior League’s Tower Hamlets at the Mile End Stadium on what was already a boiling August day.

Controlling the game throughout, and coming close early on, only for Harvey Sparks’ shot to be negated on his seasonal debut, Horsham soon got on the score sheet when, in the 15th minute, Will Miles headed home. Another header, from Lea Dawson, skimmed the crossbar, but, after Hamlets had had two wayward attempts, Chris Smith found the net midway through the first half. Charlie Harris then almost put the Hornets three up amid thwarted

efforts by the hosts, but Horsham were not to be denied and, on the stroke of the interval, Smith picked up an opportunist goal when home keeper Jack Gannon pushed out Kieran Lavery’s strike and then deflected a header onto the bar for Smith to nod in the rebound. Turning round three goals to the good, the heat was beginning to take its toll, but the eastenders managed to reduce the deficit when Marc-Oliver got through

Injury hit Horsham YMCA go through in FA Cup Saturday August 24 – FA Cup Preliminary Round Horsham YMCA 2 1 Egham Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post that he is ‘absolutely delighted’ to have shepherded YM through in the FA Cup, saying: “It was a monumental result for us because we were without a recognised striker and both defender Guy Harding and midfielder Jack Frankland pulled out with injuries and we also lost Tom Gilbert, crocked, on 55 minutes.” Yet, despite YM’s obvious difficulties – requiring them to field players carrying injuries and others out of position - this was an absorb-

ing contest and a disciplined performance in intense heat. Egham, too, have problems of their own, being bottom of their league and settling in a new management team. The teams turned round 0-0 at half time, Buckland continuing: “We should really have been three up at the break, but we had a succession of clear cut misses, leaving us very frustrated, so I decided to push Matt Daniel more central up the pitch, and it paid off!” Daniel opened the scoring in the 53rd minute with an overhead kick in the crowded penalty area, only for Egham to equalise just after the hour mark. Then, after YM Physio Charlotte Durling had treated injured players on both sides - with her nephew, Match Mascot Oscar Denny looking on – Daniel hit

the winner, after a superb solo run from the middle of Egham’s half with 20 minutes of full time remaining, the goal being upheld after consultation between the officials, despite Egham’s offside claims. YM then successfully closed down the game, following which Daniel was cited as YM’s Player of the Match ‘for tireless running throughout the afternoon, intelligent link play and two excellent goals’. In the Cup’s next stage – the First Round Qualifying – YM are rewarded with a home tie – against Margate – on Saturday September 7th, meaning that their away league game scheduled for that day against AFC Uckfield will be rearranged. Meanwhile, this Saturday YM are hunting silverware again, welcoming AFC Uckfield to Gorings Mead in the Sussex Royal Ulster Rifles Charity Cup.

to thread past semi-redundant George Bentley in the Horsham goal. Bentley’s counterpart was then completely out-foxed by Zack Newton’s benign probe, restoring the Hornets’ three goal cushion. This stirred Hamlets, but Horsham were going for the jugular and, after Gannon had failed to quell an attack, Newton’s foray culminated in him firing at Alan Zuqolli, whose deflection resulted in an own goal with 10 minutes of full time left. Horsham, though,

were still not satisfied, Newton again worrying Hamlets’ patchy defence and supplying substitute Jared Rance to crash the ball in from close quarters, giving Horsham their crushing 6-1 win. In the next stage – the First Qualifying Round – Horsham have been drawn against old foes, the Metropolitan Police at the force’s Imber Court ground at East Molesey on Saturday September 7th. The two sides played a friendly 88 years ago, subsequently meeting regularly in the league in the more recent past, but this will be their first FA Cup encounter. The Met are currently 14th in the Southern League Premiership – the same level as the Hornets. Meanwhile, Horsham return to league action this Saturday with a home game against Folkestone Invicta. Club news announcement: “We are thrilled and honoured to be chosen to stage this season’s Isthmian League Youth Cup Final. It is the first time that the club has been asked by the League to host a major final since becoming members on 1973, and is further testament to the first class facilities provided at our Camping World Community Stadium. The final will take place on Monday April 20th.”

YMCA thwarted by late Hassocks equaliser Saturday August 17th – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 2 2 Hassocks Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA’s younger, new-look side trailed 1 nil at half time, but fought back to take the lead, only to be undone by a late Hassocks goal, the match ending 2-2. Despite winning just 11 times in 47 encounters, Hassocks’ record against YM has been improving, but Gorings Mead has usually been a barren hunting ground for The Robins, who have only won at the venue twice in the league this century. So, after defeats to Little Common and Alfold, YM were disappointed not to have notched up their first win of the campaign, whereas Hassocks were relieved to come away with a point.

The game was 30 minutes old when Hassocks’ Harvey Blake, with a reputation for breaking through from the back and unleashing a surprise rocket, opened the scoring with an outstanding goal, giving YM keeper Aaron Jeal no chance, the score remaining 0-1 at the break. On the resumption YM came more into the game, Dean Lovegrove restoring parity in the eighth minute following a close range scramble. And, before long YM went two up, Martin Smith finding the net. This prompted Hassocks Manager Mark Dalgleish to make changes to boost the visitors’ attack, and, sadly for YM, this had the desired effect, when, after only returning to Hassocks from Steyning Town in mid week for his first full game for some time, muchtravelled Ben Bacon broke YM’s hearts with an equaliser in the dying minutes.
