Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Continued from front page At the Repair Café, Carrie helps people switch to clean energy providers: “Everyone (bar one household) I have helped to switch has saved between £90 and £366 in their first year. So surely it is a no brainer to change”. Catherine Edminson, one of the volunteers, added: “What many people do not realise is wind turbines and solar farms, as well as power stations, all feed their energy into the National Grid, like rivers running into a big pond. When you switch to clean energy, your supplier guarantees that however much electricity you take out of the ‘pond’, the same amount of clean energy will be put in. “The more people who switch to clean tariffs, the more renewable energy that goes into the pond. This means that the energy sector is producing less pollution

and carbon, which is crucial if we are to reduce global warming and climate change”. In just 5 minutes, you can see a cost comparison with eight clean renewable energy by visiting: https://bigcleanswitch.org/ SussexGreen. People can do this from the comfort of their home or if make an appointment at the Horsham Repair Café, taking a recent energy bill and you will be helped through the process. The next Repair Café is on Saturday 7 September and takes place in the Quaker Meeting House, Worthing Road, Horsham (near Sainsburys car park and the library). An exciting new Table Tennis programme exclusively for 7 to 11-year-old girls and boys is coming to Horsham at the end of the month. Horsham Table Tennis Club is working with Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team to launch a new initiative to help youngsters develop a new sporting habit. The club is amongst the first in the country to offer the new TT Kidz programme and will hold its first session on Monday 30 September from 6pm to 7pm at its Greenway Academy home in Greenway, Horsham. TT Kidz is an eight-week programme developed by Table Tennis England to provide youngsters with an inspiring, engaging and fun first experience in the game. Children will learn all the basic skills necessary to enjoy a great game of table tennis, as well as all the benefits that an active life brings, including fitness, hand/ eye coordination, building social relationships and generally having a great time! Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Jonathan Chowen, said: “Promoting good health and wellbeing is at the heart of what we do at the Council and new programmes like this do much to support this. “It’s great to see our Sports Development team working so hard to diversify their programmes to encourage as many young people as possible to try something new, get active, socialise and enjoy a new sport in such a supportive

environment. “It’s a real coup that Horsham is one of the first areas in the country to benefit from this programme. “I would encourage as many families as possible to sign up their children and get them involved in this opportunity.” Greg Yarnall, Head of Development and Volunteering at Table Tennis England, added: “TT Kidz is a significant investment and is aimed at attracting a new generation of players to enjoy the game. “The programme has been put together in close consultation with specialist coaches to ensure the children have a positive, and above all, fun experience, while learning new skills. “Funding support has been secured through both Table Tennis England and Sport England. This will allow more families to access the programme and all its benefits. “We hope it will encourage them to join their local table tennis club and to keep a table tennis habit long into the future. I’m sure all the children who sign up will have a fantastic time.” Once signed up, all children will receive their very own TT Kidz kit bag, holding everything they need to get started – including TT Kidz T-shirt, bat, balls and activity book/sticker album. The 8-week programme is great value, which will include all the kit to keep as well. Places are limited and expected to fill-up fast. More information can be found at www.ttkidz.co.uk

Two day taste bud tantaliser

Continued from front page. Hundreds took part in the beer and gin trails that ran over both days encouraging visitors to explore many town centre businesses to sample some tremendous local tipples. Hepworths were the sponsors and start point for the beer trail and the Brewhouse and Kitchen was the end point and prize draw provider. The Gin Trail started at Crates Local, ending at Piries Bar who were the prize draw provider with an amazing distillery tour for ten people for the winner. A great range of food related street theatre added amusement for young and old, with acts such as Easy Lay Eggs, Fairly Fresh Fish, The Jersey Girls and Jamie’s Exploding Cookery Show. This was topped off on Sunday with a gorilla chasing a banana who joined a pineapple for a ‘walking fruit salad’, and the premier performance on the bandstand by the ‘Little Notes’ Little Nibble Fruit and Vegetable band that introduced a newly written song for the occasion. Sunday’s Little Nibble took on an education and sustainability twist, and focussed on presenting information and opportunities to experience the wide range of food and drink options now available to people. These not only reflected the best in ‘from farm to fork’ production supported by NFU Mutual Henfield, but also the popularity

in plant based and meat free eating. Reduction in plastics use and refill water initiatives were also represented. The Horsham Veganfest marquee presented a range of plant based food and drink options supporting those who would like to reduce their animal based food use. Kinder Living Horsham and friends brought along their fresh produce Smoothie Bike and plenty of tips on how to make our food and drink consumption more sustainable. Horsham District Council’s Health & Wellbeing team were present offering free advice and programmes to residents. Horsham Churches Together presented Messy Harvest with interactive food related activities for younger people and there was information on hand on how to support Horsham Food Bank at Waitrose. Bands Together (a new Horsham District Council partnership initiative that supports vulnerable people to get the most from town events) launched at the event and the new Horsham District Community Lottery was promoted, from the event information point, to raise money for local community good causes. Horsham Markets’ street food stalls launched ‘Taste Explorers’ menu items, with smaller portions for those with smaller appetites (and pockets) and to encourage trying different tastes from around the world. This will

now continue on the twice-weekly markets as a new feature. Horsham Bus Rally returned on the Sunday as well. Always a great spectacle, there was a special show set up in the Park and Ride just south of the town and old bus routes recreated from Carfax in the town to many outlying towns and villages in Horsham District. Traditionally, The Big Nibble has marked the launch of a District wide month-long food and drink festival, but this year, for the first time, it is launching a year round campaign to promote all of the great food and drink experiences to be found in Horsham District across the seasons. The first of Horsham District Council’s seasonal leaflets promoting our District’s food and drink experiences will be distributed at the Horsham event with all the foodie experiences on offer; it can also be downloaded from www.horshamfoodies.co.uk Anyone who visited the event is invited to give their feedback online via https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/LXSZ562 with a prize draw from The Horsham Cellar for a bottle of Nyetimber Wines Classic Cuvee sparkling to be won as an incentive. The success of previous years will be celebrated by the introduction of a fire show and increased finale! This has been made possible by sponsorship from local company Woodstock IT Services Ltd. play and fire show, the children will love the vintage fairground rides, including chair-o-planes, carousel, children’s rides, stalls, inflatables and delicious food stalls (including Gourmet Burgers, Hog Roast, Pizza, Fish and Chips, Thai, Steak, Asian Food, Hot Dogs, Pick and Mix, Donuts, and more). First day for new Chief Fire Officer

Dr Sabrina Cohen-Hatton officially took up her new role of Chief Fire Officer with West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service earlier this week (2 September) and was “absolutely delighted” to be taking on the job. The new Chief Fire Officer brings with her nearly two decades of fire service experience, having most recently served as Interim Deputy Chief Fire Officer for Surrey Fire & Rescue Service. She explained: “I am absolutely delighted to be here at West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, and I am very much looking forward to getting out and about to all of our stations to meet our crews who keep the residents of West Sussex

safe 24 hours a day. “I do appreciate that it has been a challenging couple of months for the fire service following the recent inspection report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies and Fire & Rescue Services, but I am really looking forward to working with our crews and our staff as well as our partners to make West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service the fire and rescue service it deserves to be.” Sabrina takes over from Gavin Watts, who retired in June. Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Neil Stocker, has been Acting Chief Fire Officer in the interim. Sabrina said: “I would like to thank Neil for doing a great job leading the service for the past few months and I look forward to working with him as we take the service forward.” Cabinet Member for Fire and Rescue and Communities, Jacquie Russell, said: “I am delighted to welcome Sabrina to West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service. Her wide ranging expertise will prove invaluable in helping to reaffirm a sense of value and identity within the workforce, and developing future strategies that will assist us in continuing to both improve and provide an effective and efficient fire service for our residents.” Sabrina began her career with South Wales Fire & Rescue Service, where she served as a firefighter before working her

way up to more senior roles in the service, and eventually serving in London Fire Brigade before her secondment to Surrey Fire & Rescue Service. She has helped shape national fire service policy and practice during her government secondments at Her Majesty Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service (HMICFRS) and at the National Fire Chiefs Council. Throughout her career as a firefighter, Sabrina Cohen-Hatton has pursued further and higher education. She is a chartered psychologist and her pioneering research into critical decisionmaking has received national and international recognition. She added: “Psychology as a discipline is really important to me, as it helps you to see the human element of everything you do, whether that’s the decisions you make, or the strategies you set. It is so important to think about the impact of what we do day in day out on the people who rely on us. “As a fire and rescue service we are in an incredibly privileged position to be trusted by residents to know what to do when they’re, quite frankly, having the worst day of their lives. Understanding the psychology behind that means we can all make a contribution to doing our best to help them when they need us most.”

Little Street Rudgwick-awakening imagination A very special centre for children has been created at Rudgwick, allowing them to play in safe, inspiring surroundings, using their imagination to have fun exploring a street designed with little people in mind. Proprietor, Rebecca Wolstenholme explaining: “It is a scaled down version of a typical town, encouraging children to learn about and enjoy life in the world around them through play, stimulating their curiosity and inventiveness.” There is a pizza parlour, theatre, beauty salon, supermarket, and construction site, along with a vet’s surgery. And, there are ride on vehicles, including a large fire engine, and in addition to the post office and delivery points, there is a police station, and picnic and barbecue areas, too. Rebecca continues, saying: “I used to take my two young sons

to a Little Street Centre some way away - they loved the interactive environment with hands on play and it made a refreshing change from soft play. So, I decided to set up a centre myself as a Little Street franchisee – and its proving very popular! The typical age range of the children is from walking up to about seven, but 8-10 year olds can still enjoy it, we are very much family orientated, with an area for snacks allowing parents to relax. Next door there is the Apple Tree Café to sample before or afterwards and we’re finding that families extend their visits by enjoying the adjacent recreation ground facilities. We are open 7 days a week and always aim to offer the best, high quality experience possible. Young children with special educational needs can also be accommodated. ” The play sessions are pre-

defined, with four sessions daily, with, at the end of each, time taken to restore the award winning Little Street concept back to its original state for the enjoyment of the next children. Pre-booking is recommended, ensuring that Little Street is not over-crowded, giving the children plenty of space to enjoy themselves, Rebecca adding: “The feedback has been excellent and its always lovely to welcome back familiar faces, but we love making new friends, too, so pay us a visit – the children are loving Little Street!” Rudgwick’s Little Street is in the George Vth Building, the former Sports & Social Club, Guildford Road, RH12 3JJ – 01403 451677, with directions on the website – www.little-street. co.uk – e mail rudgwick@littlestreet.co.uk

Animal safety in their businesses has always been at the forefront of their thinking and in particular dog safety and they have now set up The Dog-G8 Company. Julie had been running ‘Holiday Help 4 Petz’, a pet-sitting service for all kinds of pets, since 2002. In 2009, Peter joined Julie on this business, and they then took the decision to franchise the business. They formed The Pets, Homes

and Gardens Company, which currently has twenty nine franchises across the UK, all the way from Whitley Bay to Plymouth, and continues to grow. The couple have seen the huge increases of more daily calls to homes from postal workers and the online shopping couriers. With this increase, it was becoming apparent there was a massive safety issue for both the dogs and the callers to the home. The flash point being every time the front was door opened. On average, eight postal workers are bitten every day in the UK, and the other delivery companies and couriers also face the same

problem. So Peter went looking for a simple and cost effective way of resolving this issue, as well as keeping the dogs safe behind an open front door. He looked at various types of ‘gates’ designed to try and stop this happening, however, he felt just didn’t deal with all the aspects of this problem enough. He therefore decided to develop his own safety gate. After many months of in-depth development, and also working with a Peterboroughbased engineering company, The Dog-G8 was born. The beauty of Dog-G8 is that it fixes neatly to the front door of a house and it is very attractive in appearance. Dog-G8 will stop a dog running out every time the door is opened, by keeping the dog safely behind a physical barrier. It also protects the caller at the door, which is equally important. Peter has designed Dog-G8 to be easily removable when not required, and fully modular - should you wish to extend Dog-G8 wider. The Dog-G8 Company knows it has developed a ‘game-changer’ regarding the safety of dogs and callers to any home that has a Dog-G8 fitted. Julie and Peter are also very proud that Dog-G8 is a totally British-made product. For more information, please visit: www.dog-g8.com

A brand new original ballet inspired by Lewis Carroll’s much loved character An unmissable brand new production from Chantry Dance Company, ‘ALICE – Wonderland Through the Looking Glass’, created by the choreographers of David Walliams’ ‘Billionaire Boy’ and ‘Gangsta Granny’, and starring Britains’ Got Talent star, Shannon Parker, plays at The Capitol, Horsham on 8 October. ‘ALICE – Wonderland Through the Looking Glass’ is an inventive and exciting new ballet created by Chantry Dance Company for 2019. It is written as a sequel to the famous Lewis Caroll stories and throws a new light on all his much loved characters. The ballet stars Shannon Parker, who is well known for her appearances with Peter Parker as ‘Shannon and Pete’ on Britain’s Got Talent. Shannon and Pete were finalists and Wild Card Winners on the popular TV show, as well as finalists on Sky’s ‘Got To Dance’. Shannon has an incredible dance pedigree, having been Principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre and Ballet Du Rhin, and dancing for world-renowned choreographers, such as William Forsythe. Now she is playing the role of ‘Alice’. Chantry Dance Company’s coArtistic Director, Paul Chantry, said: “we are all thrilled that Shannon is dancing with CDC again this year. She was exquisite last year playing ‘Lucy’ in ‘DRACULA – Welcome to D’s’ and we are even more excited to have

her playing the title role of ‘Alice’ this year. Her experience and professionalism add such a great depth to the company and she hugely inspires the other dancers as well as the creative team. As a choreographer, to work with such a brilliant dancer is a gift. Shannon is an exceptional talent, and she brings a unique dimension to the choreography through her interpretation of the work. I have no doubt she will be a great inspiration to anyone watching her performance.” Paul is the coArtistic Director of Chantry Dance Company alongside Rae Piper, and they are both also highly experienced theatre industry professionals. As choreographers, they are known for their choreography on Birmingham Stage Company’s Olivier nominated production of David Walliam’s ‘Gangsta Granny’ and ‘Billionaire Boy’, which premières at The Capitol in September 2019, and on and the ‘Horrible Histories’ stage shows, as well as choreographing for international Opera and dance houses such as Sadler’s Wells and the Royal Opera House. Chantry’s innovative new ballet of ‘ALICE – Wonderland Through the Looking Glass’ takes place after the events of “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass”. Alice is now grown-up and an aspiring writer working in a tea-shop. Overworked and underpaid, life seemed much more exciting when she was a child. The Looking Glass

has remained in Wonderland as a portal to our world, which the Red Queen accidentally crosses when chasing a croquet ball. Entering this new reality, she develops a dastardly plan to seize power by opening a casino where she creates an Army of Cards. Hatter and his gang of concerned Wonderland characters pursue the Queen and find Alice. Together, they resolve to stop the Queen, but first they must try to make sense (or non-sense!) of our world. Oh, and we forgot to mention, there’s a Jabberwocky lurking in the casino’s basement... The ballet features a fabulous new score written by composer Tim Mountain, as well as amazing costumes, lighting and of course, exceptional dancing. The dancers of Chantry Dance Company are all highly skilled international ballet and contemporary dancers, who have danced all over the world, including at top UK theatres such as The Royal Opera House, Sadlers’ Wells and in London’s West End. Singer and TV presenter, Simon Butteriss, said of Chantry’s work, “...hugely impressive event last night – amazing.” Other audience members have been equally delighted, saying, “superb”, “pure brilliance” and “Chantry Dance Company....YOU ROCK!” You can find out more about Chantry Dance Company at www.chantrydancecompany.org Tickets available online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

It’s September and Barnstormers Comedy is back at the Capitol Horsham for a brand new season of stand-up comedy. Yup, we’re just about to kickstart our sixteenth season in the always wonderful studio at the Capitol Horsham, and - as expected - there’s a fantastic line-up to suit the occasion. As ever, resident host Kevin Precious (pictured), will be on hand to oversee the proceedings. This month’s trio of mirthmaking headliners includes: the wonderfully chaotic and improvisatory skills of Patrick Monahan ‘This gifted livewire commands the stage with a mix of wit and force of personality’ - Evening Standard; self-styled ‘Newcastle Brown Male’ Rahul Kohli, ‘Dripping with erudite genius’ - Fest magazine; and splendidly unapologetic northern force-of-nature DebraJane Appleby, ‘She has true funny bones and oozed laughs from her every line and her every look one to keep a close eye on in our never ending search for comedy stars of tomorrow’ - Commis-

sioning Editor, Channel 4. Audience favourite Patrick Monahan blends a high energy comedy style with hilarious and engaging topical and observational material. Known for working a room, Patrick is adored by his audiences with whom he makes an effortless connection! In 2014 Patrick took part in the hit family entertainment series ‘Splash!’ (ITV) and appeared on the brand new series of ‘Celebrity Squares’ (ITV). He was also seen on ‘Fake Reaction’ (ITV) and on ‘Man Up’ (Fox) and was a regular 2014 guest on ‘Not The One Show’ (London Live). Last year Patrick could be seen as host of ‘Jongleurs Live!’ (Sky) and on ‘12 Again’ (CBBC/BBC2). Winner of the 2011 ITV1 series ‘Show Me The Funny’ which led to the release of his debut DVD ‘Patrick Monahan Live’ (2 Entertain). Patrick is also a regular MC and headlining act at the top London and UK comedy clubs and in addition to this he is in huge demand on the corporate circuit as an after dinner speaker and awards host.

‘A star-in-the-making’ - Daily Telegraph ‘Perfect game show host. Tiggerish energy that could power the national grid’ - London Evening Standard ‘Twinkle-toed, mischievous… Monahan raised the roof’ - The Sun ‘Bright young talent…high energy and conviction, his material is great; he’s going to go far’. - Sunday Times Rahul Kohli is one of the fastest rising acts on the circuit. A young geordie asian man combining fierce political satire with surreal storytelling, his debut solo show: Newcastle Brown Male gained critical acclaim at the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival earning him a top pick of both BBC Radio 4 and the Huffington Post. It also gained him radio credits for BBC Radio 4’s State of the Nation and BBC Asia Networks Big Asian Comedy Night. On top of this he has gained writing credits for other Radio 4 Shows while performing at some of the biggest clubs around the

country from the Stand up North to the Comedy Store down south. In January 2017, Rahul became an award-winning comedian winning the prestigious NATYS, formerly the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year Award.’ ‘Rising star of political comedy’ - Andy Zaltzman ‘Dripping with erudite genius’ Fest Magazine ‘Slick gag machine’ - Chortle Winner of both The Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year, and Funny Women Comedy Award in 2005, Debra Jane Appelby is fast becoming one of the most popular comedians on the circuit. Debra has appeared the BBC’s 28 Acts in 28 Minutes and on Paramount Comedy’s The World Stands Up as well as number of appearances on BBC Radio 5 Live, and as a guest on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour. ‘Hands down the funniest female comedian I have ever seen. A no-nonsense Yorkshire lass, Debra climbed on to the stage and was blunt and unapologetic in her approach from the offset. I would even go as far to say that Debra, along with Richard Herring, is one of my favourite comedy acts out of those who have climbed the Circle stage since Final Friday began a year ago’ - Worksop Guardian ‘Had that magical spontaneous quality to her comedy, delivering funny material with all the charisma of a Peter Kay. She has true funny bones and oozed laughs from her every line and her every look - one to keep a close eye on in our never ending search for comedy stars of tomorrow’ Commission Editor. Channel 4.

Ariel Musicality at The Hawth Theatre: The Review By Annabelle Loannoud On the 23rd and 24th of August 2019, after only one week of rehearsals, the talented cast of Ariel’s Junior Musicality treated three sold out audiences to an unforgettable performance. The annual summer workshop, including students from all the company’s Sussex academies, has reached its 13th year and appears to have gone from strength to strength. Throughout the afternoon there was a multitude of opportunity for each of the young actors to showcase their skills in drama, dance and especially singing- the variety of musical theatre pieces allowed everyone to prove their versatility. The show was opened by the ensemble number ‘Welcome to the Rock’ from the critically acclaimed ‘Come from Away’, which had its West End debut earlier this year. As well as stand-out performances from several soloists, the group choreography and vocals were also seamless and gave the cast a definite professional appearance. As well as acting as a single unit, there were also several songs where all the performers were able to immerse themselves fully in their own characters. This was shown especially in ‘It Must be Believed to be Seen’ from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, in which the golden ticket winners and their parents were constantly reacting to the events on stage, making them stand out despite the amazing

solo performance at the forefront. The ‘Ascot Gavotte’ from ‘My Fair Lady’, well known for its comedic potential, was also a highlight of the show due to the hilarious facial expressions from the whole cast. Alongside the many pieces featuring both younger and older students, there was no shortage of solos, duets and small groups where the audience were able to truly invest themselves in emotional and light-hearted songs alike. From powerful ballads like ‘Safer’ from ‘First Date’ or ‘All that Matters’ from ‘Finding Neverland’, to more amusing numbers like ‘Morning Person’ from ‘Shrek’ and Kristin Chenoweth’s ‘Taylor the Latte Boy’, both of which made those watching laugh out loud. ‘Ring of Keys’ from ‘Fun Home’, a musical based on the life of the writer and activist Alison Bechdel, creatively used three different soloists in the scene where the young Alison begins to feel secure after seeing a woman whose traits she aspires to have, giving subtly different perspectives and showing the song’s relatability to many people. One of the most standout aspects of this year’s workshop was the array of different shows that were used. There were many well known productions such as ‘9 to 5’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, where the popular songs were combined with entertaining choreography and the use of props (in 9 to 5’s case the characterisation was kept up right into the interval!) On the other hand, a lot of shows that have only

begun recently were also used. ‘And You Don’t Even Know it’ from ‘Everybody’s talking about Jamie’, a 2017 musical following a 16 year old boy who dreams of becoming a drag queen, was one of the most high energy numbers in the show, including a complex dance routinevery similar to that of the West End show- combined with the vocals. ‘The Cover is not the Book’ from the recently released ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ also contained an impressive amount of movement throughout, particularly in the difficult sped up verse originally sung by Lin Manuel-Miranda. Perhaps the newest stage musical to be featured was ‘Six’, starring the characters of Henry VIIIs wives, which only made its West End debut earlier in

2019. The group of girls performed the opening number ‘Ex-Wives’, in a way that many thought could rival the original cast. The younger students also held their own in several challenging pieces from often underrated shows, from a duo of songs from ‘13’ to ‘Why we like Spelling’ from ‘the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ - both of which thoroughly entertained the audience. Overall, the 2019 Junior Musicality Show was a great experience. Everyone present was clearly immensely talented and had put a lot of work into the week’s rehearsals, shown by the quality of the performance put together in such a short amount of time. Well done everyone!

HAODS 65th year celebration with 2nd performance: Romeo and Juliet

Our House at The Hawth Set in Camden Town in the mid ‘80s, Our House tells the story of 16 year old Joe Casey, his mates, his girlfriend Sarah and the night he commits a petty crime to impress her. When the police turn up, Joe has to decide whether to run away, or face the music. A split-second decision forces him to choose between himself and his heart as the story splits in two; one which sees Joe stay to face the music, and the other which sees him flee and leave Sarah to run from the police. As two very different

paths unfold before him, the consequences of that choice will change his life forever. The story is told using classic Madness songs; Our House, Baggy Trousers, My Girl, Embarrassment, The Sun and the Rain, Driving in My Car, The Wings of a Dove, Night Boat to Cairo, the all-time classic It Must Be Love - and many more. Performances: 24 - 28 September 2019, The Hawth Theatre Crawley. Tickets: Available online: www.parkwoodtheatres.co.uk

Photos by Ray Bailey

The weekend of Saturday 31 August / Sunday 1 September saw participants through 48 hours of workshops and a performance of Romeo and Juliet, as part of the Year of Culture, at The Capitol Theatre. HAODS proudly showcased a stunning one-off performance with a cast of 28, 12 of whom had only started rehearsing their scenes on Saturday. Lines were learned, songs practised, fight scenes choreographed and scenes blocked as the citizens of Verona created the magic of theatre for an audience on Sunday night. Costumes were fitted, lighting plotted and finally Romeo and Juliet took to the stage at 7pm in front of friends, family

and the citizens of Horsham. Josh Watts (Romeo) and Holly Morris (Juliet) recreated the first love of 15 year olds surrounded by their two families, at war and ready to fight. Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy in the Shakespeare collection of plays, but also shows bawdy humour and compassion with Nurse (Tess Kennedy) and the Friar (Jan Hacker) providing welcome relief along side Romeo’s friends Benvolio (Alex Brown) and Mercutio (Alicia Marson). Lord and Lady Capulet (David Johnson and Sue Tyrrell) and Lord and Lady Mercutio (Kev Summers and Hannah Wheatley) have to deal with Tybalt’s death (Amelia Douglas) and explain themselves to the Prince (James Douglas) whilst

Paris (David Veitch) awaits his young bride. Many of the parts in this production were taken by people not only new to Shakespeare, but also new to performing, thereby opening up the world of theatre to a new group of performers, united in a love of the stage. The production was directed by Yvonne Chadwell and Audrey Lucas, with Tara Lucas as Associate director; original music was provided by Andrew Donovan and lighting designed by Dan Barnes. As the second of three shows for 2019 in HAODS’ 65th year, the society now moves on to bring My Fair Lady to the Capitol in November.

Horsham RFC’s eagerly awaited season starts on Saturday Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter There is a great buzz and air of anticipation around Horsham Rugby Club - after their excellent 2018-2019 season ended in promotion they will be playing in the even stronger London 1 South League, level 6 in the rugby pyramid, their highest level for 25 years. Training has been in full swing with testing friendlies, the opposition including Haywards Heath and Old Reigatians. There has been a recruitment drive, a new 1st XV Captain has been appointed and sponsors - Spire Gatwick Park Private Hospital and WPS

Planning (provider of essential planning advice and strategy) have renewed their contracts, and The Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate has come on board. Jamie Redmayne steps up as Captain with the responsibility to deliver the coaches messages and navigate the players through the uncertain waters of London 1. Vastly experienced Redmayne returned to Horsham last season following 13 years of National League Rugby with Worthing Raiders, including stints when the club played at level 3 in the pyramid. He has earned over 200 National League caps, quickly showing his quality on return to his boyhood club and

was the unanimously popular choice among both the players and coaching staff in recognition of his outstanding leadership in many crucial games throughout last season, Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “Jamie is an obvious choice to lead the team after the retirement of Rich Tredgett. He has come through the Harlequins Academy and is a beacon of reference for our young but rapidly improving squad with calm authority, huge work rate and great ability to lead players in the heat of competitive matches. He is a fantastic communicator and the coaching team is looking forward to working with Jamie in the exciting season ahead!”

A Club statement adds: “The majority of last year’s highly successful team returns for the new challenge ahead, and we have welcomed back some quality players from university, but there is always room for more players, so if you like playing rugby in the way that it should be played - with a huge degree of enjoyment in a player-led coaching environment, then you would be most welcome to join us at Horsham RFC – there are plenty of opportunities to play: we field 3 senior (league) teams. We also put out an occasional casual vets side, offering room for all, including new play-

ers and those returning to the game after a break. And, there is a wide range of junior rugby, for both boys and girls. We have newly installed changing rooms, a superb Artificial Grass Pitch suiting our expansive style of play, an extensive, modernised clubhouse, and an active social programme, with the enjoyment often spilling over from the pitch into the clubhouse!” Horsham’s 1st XV’s league schedule starts this Saturday with a trip to Chichester, then, the team plays its first home game in London 1 against also promoted old foe Beckenham on Saturday week (September 14)

Final news of Horsham and Roffey’s junior sides Saturday August 31 – Feeder team round up Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham 2nd XI’s difficult season ended at Cricketfield Road last Saturday with a heavy defeat to visitors Chichester Priory Park. At the foot of the table, Horsham had already been relegated. Horsham thirds’ have also gone down – their game at Ram CC was not fulfilled. By contrast, top of the table Roffey seconds have been promoted (to Division 2) – they beat Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching by 5 wickets, bowling them out for 190, Alex Collins leading the attack with 4-23. Max Rivers top-scored for Roffey with 61, Sachin Naik

making 41. Despite narrowly losing to Chippendale, Roffey thirds also won their league, earning promotion. In their final game of the season – at Faygate – Chippendale inserted Roffey and dismissed them for 144, skipper Josh Kennedy scored 51 opening the innings, but that was the sole batting highlight, extras being the next highest contributor with 30. But it was far from plain sailing for Chippendale, early wickets putting them under pressure, timeless Jim Barnes taking 4-39, only a late order 50 from Scott Bradshaw enabling the visitors to scramble home by two wickets. Roffey 4s had already completed their programme, finishing fourth in their league.

Champions Roffey finish unbeaten

Horsham seeking a return to former glory Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter It has been a most unhappy season for Horsham Cricket Club, with the First XI, one of the founders of the league in 1971, relegated from the Premiership to Division 2 for the first time, and, the Second and Third elevens also going down, with the Fourth XI disbanded. It will not be easy for the teams to reinstate themselves to the same leagues as this season. When teams have gone down from the Premiership players have often moved on - either through disillusionment, or a desire to continue playing in the highest echelon of club cricket throughout Sussex – resulting in teams drifting down the leagues. But, Eastbourne, Hastings and Three Bridges have proved that it is possible to come back after relegation and Horsham has the nucleus of a competitive side, and this season the 1st XI has thrashed strong sides – Eastbourne were last year’s runner up and Brighton were top when Horsham humiliated them, and Horsham completed the double over Brighton last Saturday. They also recently beat always strong East Grinstead, but there were too many games when Horsham had the opposition on the ropes but could not finish them off, the habit of winning regularly having deserted the team. Horsham skipper Michael Thornely has had another good season with the bat and, along with the experience of both former captain Craig Gallagher and Paul Williams,

there is the emergence of some exciting young players, including batsman Joe Willis and bowler James Brehaut, both of whom have had very promising seasons. Then there is the all round capability of MCC young professional Nick Oxley, and the wicket keeping of Sam Bell. The Club will want to retain these players to enable them to rebuild, along with the talents of the Sussex contracted players – Will Beer, Tom Haines, and England’s Under 19 all rounder Tom Clark - despite Horsham’s woes, they still produce a conveyor belt of home grown players for the county. Sussex’s George Garton has also played. Horsham has an exceptionally pleasant ground and the wicket is extremely good, hopefully encouraging a resurgence, the key being to achieve commitment for much more consistent availability – 34 players having represented the 1st XI this season: it remains to be seen whether it is viable to run more than two Saturday sides. As a town, Horsham punches above its sporting weight with its football and rugby teams promoted and our Men’s and Ladies’ Hockey teams winning the Sussex Cups and the Ladies playing at National level. Horsham Cricket Club officials are determined to facilitate Horsham’s return to its former dominant position in Sussex cricket. Management changes will be made with a view to bouncing the Club back to its former glory, and, given the dedication of the players, resurrection is certainly possible.

Saturday August 31 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Cuckfield 127 all out (37.5 overs) Roffey 129-5 (21.1 overs) Roffey won by 5 wickets - Roffey 30 points – Cuckfield 4 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey finished the season champions, the only unbeaten side in the league – with 449 points, 103 more than secondplaced Brighton & Hove. In the previous encounter with Cuckfield, Roffey bowled them out for 123 and, last Saturday at the Innes Memorial Ground, the visitors could only manage four more. At 65-2 a challenging target was suggested, but Roffey bowled well, with both Jamie Atkins and James Pearce, fast and

straight, hitting the stumps. Roffey fielded well, too, Rohit Jagota pulling off an excellent, high slip catch at the second attempt and batsmen picking out lonely boundary fielders with unerring accuracy, Theo Rivers coolly completing. Luke Barnard compiled another excellent spell, taking 3-17 from his 10 over allocation, Ben Manenti also claiming three victims. A target of 128 was never going to seriously inconvenience Roffey unless Cuckfield could take a clutch of early wickets, and when Roffey passed the half way mark in the 12th over – with 38 overs still in the bank - the contest was as good as over. After Manenti had made 38, Jibran Khan (43) hit two straight sixes, subsequent wickets falling to cavalier, celebratory batting as the 100 was approached and overtaken. Post match, Roffey skipper

Matt Davies told the District Post: “We bat long and have good bowling depth. Although we perhaps haven’t always been quite as good as in previous seasons, we haven’t always needed to be at our best. The highlight was our win at Mayfield when 14 year old Sam Henderson came in as a tailender when we were in dire trouble and won the game for us with an incredible 82 not out. And, finishing unbeaten with such a big points margin is very satisfying. We’ve got the Sussex Cup Final at Hove this Sunday, against Eastbourne – they’re a decent side, so we’ll have to play well. Then we’ll have a bit of a rest before turning our attention to next season. We want to strengthen the side even further because we’ve got our hearts set on winning a National competition.”

Horsham bow out with a winning double Saturday August 31 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Brighton & Hove 246 all out (42.3 overs) Horsham 250-5 (43.1 overs) Horsham won by 5 wickets Horsham 30 points – Brighton 12 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham began and ended their season well, top and tailing the campaign with three wins, last Saturday, the final week of the league programme, completing a double over runner up Brighton & Hove. They had also beaten good sides like Eastbourne and East Grin-

stead, but in between there were several games that they really should have won after having the opposition in deep trouble, and had they managed to clinch two of those games then they would have survived in the Premiership. Saturday’s win moved Horsham up to the penultimate berth, but they finished 25 points behind eighth-placed Cuckfield and will be in Division 2 next season. Meanwhile, at the Nevill Sports Ground Brighton elected to bat, and at 149-3 they looked likely to post a very challenging score, but, once Tim Jarvis (58) and Simon Hetherton were out – both dismissed by Tom Clark - Horsham kept chipping wickets away, Clark and Harnoop Kalsi taking

three apiece and Sam Bell two. Hetherton had looked especially dangerous, scoring 52 from just 24 balls, including 5 sixes. Replying, Horsham started well, and a third wicket stand took them to 154, when Joe Willis departed for 36. Skipper Michael Thornely was in good form, seeing Horsham home with almost 7 overs to spare, his unbeaten 117 coming at exactly a run a ball. Horsham gave debuts to Ollie Haines, aged 15 and Rahul Tangirala, just turned 13, confirming that there is promising emerging talent at the club. A separate article in this week’s edition of your District Post reflets on Horsham’s disappointing season and hopes for the future.

Great news for busy cricketers – the Sussex Slam is coming!

Final Premier League round up – August 31st matches

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Sussex Cricket is delighted to announce an exciting new midweek T20 recreational competition – THE SUSSEX SLAM – for next summer - fast, fun and convenient, perfect for busy people unable to commit to longer games, but still wanting to play organised, competitive cricket. Matches will be no longer than 2.5 hours, fitting in after work on summer evenings - at any time within a two-week window to give sides ample opportunity to make arrangements, and administration can all be done on a mobile phone. Player eligibility rules, bowler over-limits and not-out retirements for batsmen will encourage full participation and each side will be guaranteed at least four matches, initially in a group stage, keeping fixtures as localised as possible right through to Finals Day. As with top professional T20 leagues, every Sussex Slam team will have a bold, unique identity, with a nickname and individual logo, and an option to play in bespoke, affordable coloured kit. The Sussex Slam will be the second county-based ‘Slam’

competition, following the highly successful launch in neighbouring Surrey last year, when more than 1,200 players participated, with over 20% either new or returning to the game, with over 220 potential new players contacting teams directly through the competition website following a targeted social media campaign, run centrally on behalf of all teams. Sussex Cricket is committed to providing the playing opportunities that meet players’ needs, hence The Sussex Slam. Rules will be kept under review via an online voting process, Sussex Cricket Foundation Territory Manager, Carl Tupper saying: “We are always looking at new and exciting ways to allow more people to play cricket suitable to their lifestyle and are working closely to link in with and support existing midweek competitions, to facilitate more cricket. And, there will be the chance to play in Finals Day at Sussex’s Hove HQ The 1st Central County Ground - a fantastic opportunity for recreational cricketers.” Sussex Slam Competition Manager, Matt Camp says: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working on this exciting competition. The Slam has been instantly successful in Surrey and we are acutely aware of the chal-

lenges in ensuring the growth of recreational cricket. The Slam is affordable, flexible, exhilarating, and convenient, for teams and players. I’m really looking forward to working with teams across Sussex to exceed the achievements of Surrey!” Horsham Cricket Club’s Chris Shambrook adds: “I have been working to integrate our local Gullick Cup competition into the Sussex Slam and it has been agreed, that, with the success of this years Gullick Cup and plate, it will become a regional feeder competition into the Slam Plate. The Gullick will continue under existing rules and I will carry on as Administrator. The Mirfield Cup will be reinstated, under Slam rules, feeding into the Slam main draw. Teams are welcome to play in both, providing they meet the appropriate player qualifications. Regional finals will be played at Horsham CC and further details will follow, but, as always, we are looking to get as many people playing cricket as possible.”For full details of The Sussex Slam, including how to enter a team, visit www.sussexslam.co.uk. Keep up to date with all the latest Slam news by following @SussexSlam, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Slinfold delighted with promotion Photo by Steve Haines

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Slinfold Cricket Club skipper Steve Haines tells the District Post: “It has been a fantastic season for us and we’re delighted to be promoted after being so disappointed when we were

relegated this time last year. It is so important to bounce back, although we weren’t expecting to take the title with 13 wins – more than anyone else – this is a strong league!” In their final game of the season last Saturday, Slinfold were set a revised target of 228 against

Crawley, falling just two runs short when the overs evaporated, a win would have been the icing on the cake, but it mattered not – Slinfold had already wrapped up promotion the week before, Haines continuing: “The key has been winning tight games – several matches have gone down to the wire and winning those made the difference, the depth of our batting has proved decisive. We’ve got a good team spirit, and it has been particularly pleasing to see colts coming in and contributing. Dan Smith has had a great season with both bat and ball, adding to our spin options. We’ve got a nucleus of Asian players, and Imran Shah is a top bowler in the league and won us matches. Everyone has played well, so I’m really pleased for them, because they’ve worked so hard to get us back up and I feel that we should more than hold our own in Division Three next season.” Runner up Henfield are also promoted

After just this one season in the Premiership, Mayfield had already been relegated prior to their home match against Middleton, and defeat consigned them to the bottom of the table, after they were put in to bat and were bowled out for 205. Overseas star Kaushal Silva made 90 and Steven Harman 34, but seven other batsmen were unable to get to double figures, Harry Hovey and Jack Carson each taking three wickets. When fourth-placed Middleton replied, Emmerson Wood and Steven Harman reduced them to 40-4, but the ever-reliable Mahesh Rawat’s unbeaten 80 and 47 from Carson, saw them home for the loss of only one further wicket with 14 overs to spare. At Saint Hill hosts East Grinstead decided to bat, putting on 120 for the first wicket, openers Will Adkin and Tom Haynes finishing with 85 and 50, respectively. Ian Sturmer then hit a quick-fire 70, containing 8 fours and four sixes,

supported by 64 from wicketkeeper Leo Cammish, enabling Grinstead to post the highest Premiership score of the day from their 50 over allocation – 347-7, despite Harry Crocombe’s five wicket haul. But, Eastbourne went on to chase down the adjusted target, making 261-7 in 36.5 overs, thanks to 83 from Oli Carter, 71 from Ben Twine, and 38 from opener James Hockley. East Grinstead completed the season in fifth position, two places above Eastbourne. Returning to the top flight this season, Three Bridges finished third - just one point behind runner up Brighton & Hove – after beating visitors Preston Nomads (sixth) last Saturday. Nomads elected to bat, only to be bowled out for 161, Kashif Ibrahim topscoring with 43, Adam Jones and Matt Blandford sharing seven wickets between them. Three Bridges then made short work of the ask, knocking off the runs in 27.4 overs, for the loss of only three wickets, with forties from Sam Cooper and David Winn and 38 from Conor Golding.

Billingshurst finish fifth with win over Burgess Hill Saturday August 31 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – Division 2 Billingshurst 200 all out (43.5 overs) - Burgess Hill 170 all out (38 overs) Billingshurst won by 30 runs. Billingshurst 30 points Burgess Hill 13 points Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst ended their season on a winning note at Jubilee Fields last Saturday, beating Burgess Hill by 30 runs. The visitors put Billingshurst in, Aussie Jordan Willoughby signing off his spell as overseas player with 85 at the top of the order. Twenties from skipper Ben Mortimer, Andy Barr and Jon Alexander enabled Billingshurst to reach 200. Former Captain Ben Williams then rounded off his excellent sea-

son by dismissing both openers, Comor McCartney following up with 4-36 and Barr 2-13, Burgess Hill’s last five wickets falling for just 18 runs. Billingshurst finished fifth in the table after winning eight games, but losing seven. This was another season of what might have been for Billlingshurst - they headed the table for three weeks in May and June, but, as also happened last year, their earlier consistency deserted them, scuppering their chance of promotion back to the Premiership. Hastings topped the table to bounce straight back up to the Premiership, accompanied by runner up Haywards Heath, making a welcome return following a prolonged absence from the top flight, after strong promotion contender Bognor fell at the final hurdle with defeat at the hands of St James’s Montefiore.

Youthful Broadbridge Heath beat more than useful CDG Monday August 26 - Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Crawley Down Gatwick 1 2 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Playing again very soon after their hard-fought FA Cup tie at Hastings, Broadbridge Heath

pulled off a stirring win against strong Crawley Down Gatwick, despite still being without Martyn Flack, Max Howell, Marlon Maxwell, Scott Weller and Ben Whitely. But, fortunately Renato Carvalho, George Cousins and Jake Hull were back, Cousins passing a late fitness test. Crawley Down had early possession, but Heath’s impressive forward line – Tom

Howard-Bold, Carvalho, Cousins and Jamie Taylor created opportunities, only to be denied by stout defending – until Taylor laid on a supply to Cousins, who put the Bears in front. The advantage was, though short-lived, a Heath attack culminating in Crawley Down gaining possession and territory, and when Ollie Leslie was fouled a penalty was awarded, which he duly converted, leaving

the score level, 1-1, at the break. The re-start saw Crawley Down in possession, with Heath keeper Conor Evento keeping them at bay, but Heath, too, were pressing forward and, when injury forced Carvalho off, the introduction of substitute Hull tormented the Crawley Down back line, especially when he put Howard-Bold through, but he was unable to get the ball past Sam Smith in the

hosts’ goal. Taylor then probed to no avail, before he combined with Godfrey to penetrate the defence, Godfrey placing the winning goal well out of reach. Late substitutes Conor Smith and Cameron Watts – replacing Lee Carney and Cousins – gave Heath an increasingly youthful look with only four of team on the field at full time being older than 22.

Monday August 26 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Lewes 0 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter 600 spectators came to Lewes’ historic Dripping Pan on the sweltering Bank Holiday Monday, when Horsham’s travelling supporters were delighted to see the Hornets leave with all three points, maintaining their

unbeaten status. Rooks fans, though had little to squawk about, with, at the end of the encounter, their team having just a single point from five games, despite being designated title hopefuls pre-season. Fresh from their big FA Cup win against Tower Hamlets, Horsham took the field with a changed line up – Joe Shelley and George Hayward coming in for Steve Metcalf and Alec Kelly respectively. Horsham had an early corner, yet, breaking

away with the ball, Lewes had the first real goal scoring opportunity, but this was squandered when Michael Dome-Bemwin blazed over. Then, Horsham keeper George Bentley had to stretch himself to fingertip a cross off for a corner, before, with action switching to the other end, Hayward fed Chris Smith, only to be denied by Nathan Stroomberg in the Lewes goal. After the teams had taken on water, a Hayward header was kept out, ahead of

a Smith strike being thwarted. Horsham, though, were not having it all their own way, enduring a scare averted by the quick thinking of Charlie Harris. And, Lewes kept pressing, but the Hornets’ held them at bay, ahead of Smith and Kieran Lavery both being unable to capitalise, the score remaining goal-less at the break thanks to outstanding defensive work from both sides. However, Horsham got onto the score sheet just seconds from

the restart, when Hayward put the ball over Stroomberg’s head and into the net to give Horsham the lead. Lewes retaliated, but Bentley managed to push a free kick onto the post and away, before Lewes’ Ola Adeyemo headed wide. Smith, though, was still plaguing the Lewes back line to set up Zack Newton, who could only scorch the crossbar. A pivotal two minutes followed – first, Lewes were reduced to ten men when Chappell was sent off for a foul on Newton, Horsham taking full advantage by scoring from the second of two successive corners, Shelley’s header crashing home. Now two down, Lewes were in need of a quick goal to put them within range, but again friendly woodwork came to Horsham’s assistance. Lewes then created further chances, but were wayward. Smith, though continued tormenting and might have put the game totally out of Lewes’ reach, only for his charge to be quelled. With time fast evaporating, further Lewes goal scoring possibilities came and went, with Horsham, being denied a strong penalty appeal and Lavery’s last gasp shot cleared off the line, the hard fought game ending in the more accurate Horsham’s favour.

Last gasp penalty miss denies Horsham a point Saturday August 31 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 0 1 Folkestone Invicta Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was always going to be a tough nut for Horsham to crack as, coming into this game, Folkestone had four wins and a draw. But, Horsham had also had a good start to life back in the Isthmian Premier Division, and, like Folkestone, were unbeaten,

Manager Dom di Paola praising the Hornets’ performances even though he felt that they were not yet playing quite as well as last season. But, 600 spectators saw Horsham give a good account of themselves, holding Folkestone for much of the game in the closely matched contest before an opportunity to share the points came and went unrequited at the death. Horsham were quick out of the blocks, with Harvey Sparks laying on a cross just beyond Chris Smith’s reach. Folkestone responded, but Josh Vincent was too aerial. The combatants kept

each other at bay, until, mid way through the half, Horsham’s Jerry O’Sullivan saw his thrust culminate in a corner, from which Harry Mills’ strike was safely gathered by visiting keeper Henry Newcombe. Charlie Harris then stepped up for a free kick, this time Newcombe dropping the ball with Zack Newton advancing, but neither side scored up to the break, a late Harris rocket being denied by the woodwork before a shot from Folkestone’s Kieran McCann was safely negated by George Bentley in the home goal. Horsham restarted well, but

George Hayward’s supply evaded his teammates. Then, after Jerson dos Santos was off target, Horsham earned three corners, sub Rob O’Toole just failing to convert. Bentley pushed a strike away and another clear Folkestone opportunity singed the crossbar. Horsham, though, soon went one down when Bentley could only deflect a shot, which culminated with visiting sub Ter Horst scoring. Di Paola made further substitutions and Horsham frightened Folkestone with a deep cross, but O’Toole’s header was uncharacteristically off target.

The clock was running down fast, but there was still time for one last effort, yet just when Smith was poised to unleash a shot, he was fouled, only to miss from the penalty spot seconds before the final whistle, ending Horsham’s unbeaten run. Although the result was closer than scorelines in the Hornets’ recent encounters with Folkestone, Horsham have not put a ball into the Kent side’s net for six years. This Saturday Horsham travel to Imber Court to take on the Met Police in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round.
