Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Favourites Roffey stumble to disappointing cup final defeat

Photo by Richard Barnard Sussex Sunday T20 Cup Final Sunday September 8 Eastbourne 159-6 (20 0vers) Roffey 147-6 (20 overs) Eastbourne won by 12 runs Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter A strange thing happened last Sunday – Roffey lost a game - for only the second time in 27 league and cup matches this season, having won the Sussex Premier-

ship as the only unbeaten side. As is customary, last Sunday’s Sussex Cup Final – Roffey’s third consecutive appearance - was staged at Sussex’s Hove Headquarters, The 1st Central County Ground, but played under lights and in coloured clothing for the first time. After Eastbourne won the toss and elected to bat first, it became a game of four quarters, with Roffey winning the first and third, but, crucially, Eastbourne bouncing back to

post an unexpectedly challenging score in the second quarter before tightening the screw to deny Roffey a likely looking win in the all important final run in. Roffey always want to win, and they dearly wanted to succeed last Sunday, giving them a league and cup double, and, especially, entry into the National T20 competition, which they are keen to carry off. George Fleming delayed his honeymoon following his wedding the previous day and Aussie all

rounder Ben Manenti rescheduled his return home to also enable him to play, but to no avail. Eastbourne started carefully, and when their star batsman, former Kent pro James Hockley, was run out by a Mike Norris direct hit in the seventh over, they were 32-1, Hockley having also been run out cheaply when Roffey won the league at the Saffrons last season. Roffey maintained control, and at the half way stage – ten overs – Eastbourne had a modest 56 runs, but opener Malcolm Johnson was batting securely, going on to hit 4 fours in Jamie Atkins’ first over, followed by a six down the ground at the other end. Paul Harrison then completed two smart stumpings off Luke Barnard, but not before his Eastbourne counterpart Oli Carter had chipped in with streaky fours, and by the time Carter and Johnson were out – Johnson picking out Manenti for 64 – the score had risen to 136-4 in the 17th over. Barnard (3-31) then trapped David Twine LBW and Atkins plucked out Alastair Orr’s middle stump, and although only three runs came off the last over, Roffey found themselves chasing 160, a far higher target than had appeared likely. Clearly, Roffey needed to get off to a good start with Manenti recovering his brutally destructive one day form from previous months and Rohit Jagota overcoming last season’s disappointments in Roffey’s big late cup encounters. And, Roffey supporters – of which there were many – had plenty to enthuse them, Jagota hitting

early fours and a big six down the ground, and even when Manenti was out after also hitting a maximum, there was no real concern, particularly when more hefty blows from Jagota took the score to 60-1 by the end of the sixth over. The Lenham brothers – Scott and Archie – were bowling in tandem, but, after Jibran Khan had joined Jagota, the score reached 86-1 at the mid point of Roffey’s overs. Jagota brought up his 50 with a swept boundary and although he was out in the next over Roffey had good batting to come and with the asking rate still at the original eight an over and wickets in hand, the chase did not appear too daunting. And, it dropped to 7 an over off the last three, with a short boundary on the pavilion side and big gaps on the other. But, opening bowler Joe Pocklington – the subsequent Player of the Match - was brought back to grab three quick wickets, including two in the penultimate over, completely changing the equation. Suddenly 17 runs were required off the final six balls, and although Khan was still in, finishing on 43 not out, the task proved too much: the difference being that Eastbourne scored 103 in the second half of their innings, but Roffey only managed 61. Roffey skipper Matt Davies told the District Post: “We didn’t bowl well in the middle of Eastbourne’s innings, whereas they did at the end of ours, when we ran out of oomph, losing wickets at the wrong times.”

Barns Green Half Marathon approaches run-in fancy dress Barns Green Half Marathon Martin Read - Sports Reporter There will be another huge family fun day at Barns Green on Sunday September 29th, when the whole village and an army of runners from across the county and beyond turn out for the spectacular Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races. Nigel Currie from the organising committee says: “Entry numbers are increasing but there is still plenty of time to enter. One of the most popular features of the races is the Fancy Dress Runners sponsored by ChilliPepperTV. Each year a variety of runners turn up dressed as Batman, Dames, Skeletons, Witches, Wizards and Babies. One year it was a Harry Hill lookalike that won the first prize! And, there are 5 fancy dress prizes – 1st £60, 2nd £50, 3rd £40, 4th £30, and 5th £20, with judging taking place on the main stage at 9am an hour before the races.” The fancy dress runners make a huge contribution to the exceptional atmosphere, Chairman of the Barns Green Half Marathon Committee, Vernon Jennings, commenting: “The fantastic

costumes that people create to run in the Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races add greatly to the colour and excitement of the day. We want to see as many people as possible in Fancy Dress, it is great fun and there are some attractive cash prizes on offer – you can enter for the race via the link below!” This year the Committee is very keen to make the 37th Half Marathon, and 4th 10K race even better than ever, encouraging racers to enter at the earliest opportunity. Last year over 2,000 runners registered to take part in the two races. The event is organized and run entirely by volunteers and since it began in 1982, this unique village occasion has raised a huge amount of money for charity – this year’s chosen charity again being the wonderful St Catherine’s Hospice. The races are on closed roads and go through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex including the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. There will be a loosen up session for all the runners just before the race, which will be conducted by two of Bluecoat Sports fitness instructors, so that everyone is nicely warmed up. Then

there are highly visible race pacers, enabling participants to run at their chosen speed to achieve their target finish time. There will be a variety of food stalls, six bands and groups playing music

at different points on the race routes to help keep all the runners on their toes and at the end of the races all runners receive either a gold, silver or bronze medal. Further information can be found

‘Horsham’s Best Kept Secret’ Goes on Show

For Horsham residents their historic Unitarian Church could be described as ‘hidden in plain sight’ - clearly visible to all who pass the town’s bus station or library, but giving the appearance of a private house behind its colourful front garden. That situation will change on the 21st of this month. Contributing to Horsham’s Year of Culture, and as part of the UK’s National ‘Open Days’ Programme, the church is throwing open its doors to anyone who wishes to view its interior and learn of its history since foundation

in 1721. “With this Open Day we aim to end references to our church as Horsham’s best kept secret” explained Church Chairman Patrick Wynne-Jones, “Few people realise that in 1721 it was against the law to be outside the established Church of England. That’s why the church was deliberately built to look like a private house and not a place of worship.” Between 10.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday 21 September ‘Open Day’, visitors will be offered a guided tour, will be able to examine

documents from the past and view a projected display of key moments in the building’s history – including the function of its church hall as town library during the war years. Mr Wynne-Jones continued: “Naturally we also hope to dispel some of the strange ideas about Unitarians. Talking with friends, I have been astonished by their failure to realise that its nature is strongly Christian, but nondenominational and respecting the insights of other religions and of life experience, rather than set down dogma. I’m fairly taken aback when I hear it misnamed as ‘Utilitarian’ – though that does at least imply a degree of practicality – but I simply had to intervene on the occasion when I heard it referred to as ‘Unitalian’”. The church’s Open Day coincides with Horsham’s ‘Climate Emergency’ exhibition in the church’s extensive rear garden, which District Post readers will have seen announced in our 30 August issue. Visitors on 21 September will, therefore, have the double opportunity of the church viewing and of access to that significant exhibition, at which all local environmental groups will be represented. www.hdculture2019.co.uk/ event/unitarian-church-heritage-open-day-and-climateemergency-exhibition/

New Temporary exhibition A Collector’s Passion An amazing opportunity, a real treat for art lovers, the new Temporary exhibition A Collector’s Passion allows visitors to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery to see outstanding art by some of the masters of 20th century Scottish art. Instead of traveling the high road or even the low road you will have the chance to see work by the four greats of the Scottish Colourists; Cadell’s Marble Quarry Iona, Fergusson’s Rue St Jacques, Hunter’s Still life with flowers and fruit and Peploe’s Kircudbright Castle. Works by Ann Redpath, Sir Robin Philipson and John Houston complement these works, high points of any Scottish art collection. With over 20 works on display, this is an opportunity to see a private collection of paintings not seen in public since they were sold. A collector’s passion showcases the works collected by a private individual who, on being awarded an art prize in his secondary school, went out and bought a watercolour by the then local artist Archie Sutter Watt. That painting, bought more than 60

years ago, features in the exhibition, along with two others by the Galloway based artist who taught and inspired others. Later on, as the collector’s career developed, he, along with his wife, sought and searched in the pre-internet era, for other paintings. When the world is open to you, you can focus, or be eclectic. They jointly decided to focus on works by Scottish artists from the 20th century and beyond, collecting what appealed, rather than “trophy collecting”, achieving as much satisfaction and delight from a Chris Bushe painting, of which three are on display, and one by Sir William MacTaggart. A collector researches and knows their collection, finds connections between works, a hoarder just acquires for the sake of acquiring. Without doubt, the exhibition at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is a real collector’s passion. Each work of art on display shows the collectors eye, shows his and his wife’s understanding of art, both technique, pallet and subject as well as context. Although unusual to see Scottish art in Horsham, a Sussex market town, the town and district has had many connections with the nation, from Jacobite sympathiser who preached in a local church, to head teachers, to being the summer palace of a

Clan leader and even the birthplace of Joan Eardley a major Scottish artist born in Warnham. As with all art, it crosses national boundaries as artists are influenced by others from different regions and places, it is universal, not parochial. As part of Horsham District’s Year of Culture, A Collectors Passion celebrates the impact that collector’s have had on broadening the cultural offer on the district. Without their passion the artistic life would be diminished. This once in a lifetime exhibition displays that contribution. It is a must see for art lovers. The exhibition is open now until 26 October 2019. Free admission. For more information, please visit: www.horshammuseum.org.uk. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm.

Extinction Rebellion Meeting Slams ‘Overall Collective Denial’ By Patrick Wynne-Jones At a packed-out launch event, Horsham’s newly-formed Extinction Rebellion group slammed politicians – local, national and international for ‘overall collective denial’ blocking radical action on Global Warming and loss of wildlife diversity. The meeting’s attendance showed just how rapidly environmental issues are rising up the scale of public concern. Originally planned for the Unitarian church Hall, numbers at the meeting forced spill-over into the church itself to accommodate an audience not solely composed of concerned young people, but spanning an extraordinarily wide age range of concerned citizens. An important element of the meeting – and a surprise to some in view of the movement’s title – was the emphasis on nonviolence as a key part of policy. Speakers addressed the need

for organised disruptive protest and possible arrest to overcome official inertia, but stressed that resort to violence would alienate support and be self-defeating. “Tell the truth” was the slogan on the side of the Extinction Rebellion boat famously used to halt London traffic earlier this year. That was also the overwhelming message of the meeting. Using an impressive array of official figures and the predictions of climate scientists, speakers graphically demonstrated just how imminent and predictable is the excessive warming of our planet, with resulting massive extinction of species – potentially including our own. At Horsham’s ‘Climate Emergency’ exhibition being held in the Unitarian church gardens on Saturday 21 September Extinction Rebellion will have a stand where all those interested in the movement’s policies and objectives can meet representatives and gain further information.

Time to apply for your child’s secondary school place Families with children due to start secondary school in September 2020 can now apply for places online. Applications will be open until Thursday 31 October 2019. Parents should apply for their child’s secondary school place by the deadline. Applying after the deadline will seriously affect the chances of your child being offered one of your preferred schools. The quickest and easiest way to get information and apply is online: www.westsussex.gov.uk/ school-places but those unable to apply online can request a form by calling 03330 142903. The secondary school application online process is quick and simple, and an automatic email will acknowledge that the application has been received. Free use of computers with internet access is available in all West Sussex libraries. Tips to remember when applying for secondary school applications: Parents are encouraged to apply for up to three schools and must list them in order of preference.

A child is not guaranteed a place at a school just because they are in the catchment area. Parents will need to select the catchment school as part of their application for it to be considered. Those who miss the deadline for applications must still submit an application form, as a child will not automatically be allocated a school. Richard Burrett, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: “This is an important step for children and their families, and we want to ensure the process runs as smoothly as possible. I would encourage all parents to submit their applications on time to give us the best opportunity to meet your preferences for your children. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the Admissions Team.” Primary or junior school applications: Applications for children due to start primary or junior school in September 2020 open on Monday 7 October and close on Wednesday 15 January 2020, more details to follow. Horsham business named best Male Grooming/barbershop in the UK

Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon in Horsham has picked up the national accolade of Male Grooming/ Barbershop of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2019. The Freshwater Parade salon has been recognised as the country’s stellar example of British barbering after beating competition from five other grooming/ barber businesses across the UK. Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon was

announced the winner at the Westminster Bridge Park Plaza Hotel in London. Director Chris O’Sullivan received the coveted title from Vernon Kay at the highprofile affair, which attracted peers and influencers from the hair world. The Horsham shop proved itself a cut above its rivals with impressive business growth, turnover figures, and impactful marketing. Criteria for the win also took

interior design into consideration, with Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon receiving special mention for its great décor and service offering. Commenting on the announcement, Jayne Lewis-Orr, executive director of HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards said; “Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon has crafted an amazing business, generating great customer loyalty, and a highly motivated team. “Male grooming is the fastest

growing sector in hair. Barbershops are high footfall businesses that are rewarded with incredible loyalty from their increasingly discerning customers – delivering a breadth of services that often embrace everything from wet shaves to male skincare.” Modern Barber magazine sponsored the Male Grooming/Barbershop of the Year category. Rachel Gould, Editorial Director said: “A huge well done to the winner who deserves this national recognition. Demonstrating business leadership in this exciting sector shows vision. It’s always tough to enter awards and Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon beat some very stiff competition.” On the win, Chris O’Sullivan, director of Grizzly’s Male Hair Salon said: “This is surreal! We had a sense of belief that we could win, which is why we entered in the first place, but we were blown away by the competition. To win this just two years after opening is an amazing achievement and it’s a testament to the team and the hard work they put in every day. When I started the salon, I made myself a wish list and winning this award was on that list, so to take it home today is truly amazing.” HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards recognise the strategists, entrepreneurs and stand out stars in the hair industry, highlighting the business side of a world that is predominantly known for its creativity and links to fashion. The awards, now in their 21st year, celebrate the people making the British hairdress-

ing industry the most respected in the world. The sixteen categories spotlight the people making the industry great, from the best team to most accomplished salon manager, to outstanding assistant to new innovation. Franchisee, stylist and customer care programmes are also recognised in the line-up, as well as specific awards for salon design and the stylist making the most of social media to grow their business. There are over 40,000 hairdressing, barbering and beauty businesses in the UK. The industry employs nearly 300,000 individuals with over half being self-employed, and 88% being female. Hairdressing is the 10th most popular apprenticeship in England, with 19,000 young people choosing a hairdressing career each year.* Hairdressing affords people extraordinary opportunities to demonstrate entrepreneurial skills and leadership with worldwide travel opportunities as a session stylist or educator and a creative and business outlet for driven individuals. Launched in 1998, HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards promote professionalism, innovation, and excellence; recognising individuals and teams who work tirelessly to raise the profile of the hairdressing industry. Previous winners include TONI&GUY, Rush, Electric and Lee Stafford. The event took place on 9th September 2019 at the Park Plaza Hotel, Westminster Bridge, London.

Local care home hosts community dementia awareness day

A leading home care company, Caremark Limited, is hosting an innovative community dementia awareness day, to give members of the public, staff, clients’ families, health and social care professionals, as well as local and national dignitaries a glimpse into the daily experiences of someone living with dementia. The event, which takes place

between 10:00-17:30 on Friday 13 September at Caremark’s flagship Pulborough & Horsham office, aims to raise awareness and understanding of dementia during World Alzheimer’s month (this September). The Virtual Dementia Tour, run by the acclaimed Training2Care, is medically and scientifically proven to be the most authentic experience that a person with a healthy

brain can undergo. It enables them to imagine what it is like to live with dementia more reliably than ever before. The training includes access to a bus, sponsored by Caremark, which is equipped with a vast array of training tools and equipment to give participants an immersive sensory experience comparable to dementia. Up to 50 participants including Caremark staff, clients’ relatives, local doctors and social prescribers, dementia specialists, commissioners and health and social care professionals have all been invited to attend. West Sussex County Councillor Patricia Arculus, professional representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society and the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and the UKHCA CEO, Jane Townson, have all confirmed their attendance. National PatchCare® Development Manager at Caremark, Emmie Baker, commented: “Dementia is one of the fastest growing and most misunderstood conditions, so we believe it is vital that as many people as possible gain an insight into how it affects a person’s daily life as well as the lives of others who support people living with dementia. “By offering people the oppor-

tunity to experience dementia-like sensations, our aim is to improve people’s understanding and awareness, which in turn improves interactions between people and significantly enhances the lives of those living with the condition.” Caremark is providing this unique training experience and light lunch free of charge to enable

Dementia is one of the fastest growing and most misunderstood conditions a positive opportunity for professionals and members of the local community to come together to engage in important discussions about positive and proactive dementia care. This supports West Sussex County Council’s Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. Caremark’s Training Manager and expert in dementia care, Kirsty Jones, added: “As a company, we are always exploring new training initiatives for our staff and we were keen to open the experience up to our clients’ families and other

members of the community, giving them a unique window into the world of dementia.” Dementia affects over 850,000 people in the UK and someone is diagnosed with the condition every three seconds. Dementia and a variety of related conditions including Alzheimer’s are progressive biological brain disorders, making it increasingly difficult for those affected to remember things, think logically or communicate with others. For this reason, it is very helpful for friends and family to understand the changes their loved ones may be experiencing. Serving the community since 2005, Caremark Pulborough & Horsham was the first business Caremark launched and is part of an award-winning network of over 120 offices across the UK. It offers a full range of home care services, enabling those with dementia and other vulnerable people to remain in the comfort and familiarity of their own home, retaining their independence for as long as possible. The major national tour of BILLIONAIRE BOY is about to begin and ahead of its first ever public performance, which takes place at The Capitol in Horsham next week (Thursday 26 September), bestselling children’s author David Walliams took some time out recently for a Q&A session: What is it like seeing your books come to life? It’s the most brilliant thing, seeing a book that you’ve written come to life either on television or on stage. You feel like a magician because what was in your head is somehow now all real, right in front of you, so it is a very, very exciting thing. If I gave you one billion pounds to spend however you liked and you had to spend it today, what would you spend it on? There’s one thing that Joe Spud, who is the billionaire boy, has in the book which is a water slide going down from his bedroom to a swimming pool. He just gets out of bed and goes straight down a water slide. That is something I don’t have and it really pains me. So if I had a billion pounds to spend today I’d get that water slide because water slides are so

much fun. I love them! Do you make your books difficult to stage on purpose, like having a helicopter in Billionaire Boy? The thing is that when I write the books I’m not thinking much beyond them being books. And, of course, in children’s books you want to have lots of really exciting things happening like helicopters and fast cars and I know that does create problems for people staging it but then the brilliant thing about theatre is that with imagination, anything can be done. Apart from Joe Spud who is your favourite character in Billionaire Boy? My favourite character in the story of Billionaire Boy is Mrs Trafe, the dinner lady and I actually played her in the TV adaption. Basically in the story she asks Joe for money and she says she needs for a hip operation but spends it on plastic surgery. So it was a lot of fun creating her horrible school dinners and also a lot of fun giving her the surgery in the book and seeing what she does with the money. It highlights the fact that Joe’s in a pretty difficult predicament because everyone is

father provides toilet roles to lots of pubs in the north of England and I thought, I could do that, but I didn’t have the idea, did I. Tell us more about the producers of the show The Birmingham Stage Company have already done two incredible adaptations of my books, Gangsta Granny and Awful Auntie, both of which went round the country quite a few times, came into London, got great reviews, audiences loved the shows and came back and back and back and so I’m really excited that a third book of mine is in their hands. I think this could the most fun show of all because in a way this is the most comic book. It’s a story with an emphasis on jokes and silly situations and obviously the whole thing is quite surreal with someone having so much money. So I think it’s going to be a really fun theatre show and I can’t wait to see it. Billionaire Boy is suitable for ages 5 + Performances: 26 - 29 September. asking him for money and they all have good reasons why they need it. But at the same time money is quite a corrupting thing and it makes people do bad things and lie to him. So Mrs Trafe is really a side character but she does something pretty important in the story If BUM FRESH was real as a toilet paper, would it be your favourite brand to use on the toilet? The reason Joe is a Billionaire Is because his father, Len Spud, who was just a humble man who worked in a factory, came up with this brilliant idea of a creating a special toilet roll which is moist on one side and dry on the other. I think this is a fantastic invention and I cannot believe someone hasn’t come to me and given me a billion pounds for the idea because if it was produced I think it would really catch on. But I liked it being something like this which they made their money from because actually when you sometimes meet people who have lots and lots of money you find it’s really bizarre things that they do. I met someone who was really rich and it was because their

The Aretha Franklin Songbook is coming to The Hawth Crawley on

Monday 30 September. From the creator of West-End smash hit Thriller Live!, directed by Racky Plews (Footloose, American Idiot) and with script by Tiffany King, Respect: The Aretha Franklin Songbook will take you on an uplifting musical journey. Aretha’s incredible story is told in the form of a powerful gospel sermon and features lead vocals from Stacy Francis, Cleopatra Higgins, Tanya Edwards and Cleo Stewart, accompanied by a fantastic live band and gospel choir. Aretha Franklin sadly passed away on 16 August 2018, leaving behind her an unmatchable musical legacy that will live on forever. Her amazing songbook contains some of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. Respect: The Aretha Franklin Songbook is produced by Adrian Grant, creator of the Michael Jackson hit musical: Thriller Live. Adrian explained: “I grew up listening to Aretha’s music, and often, if I wish to relax it will be to one of her albums. Aretha is one of the greatest vocalists to ever perform and I had been thinking about producing a show around her music for many years. Now, I

have the chance to honour Aretha and her legacy through this show. Fans of all ages will love the musical journey we will take them on which spans over four decades of hits from “Won’t Be Long”, released in 1960, to “I Knew You Were Waiting”, the number one duet with George Michael in 1987. I’m so excited to be working with the outstanding singers and musicians we have lined up for this show. They will absolutely do Aretha’s music justice, and I myself cannot wait to hear them on stage delivering some of the most popular songs of all time!” This amazing two-hour live concert celebrating the late, great Queen Of Soul will take you on a nostalgic musical journey packed with over 24 of Aretha Franklin’s greatest hits including Think, I Say A Little Prayer, Do Right Woman, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Natural Woman, Son Of A Preacher Man, Respect and many more! George Eliot’s Silas Marner at The Capitol

Conn Artists Theatre Company in association with Worthing Theatres and The George Eliot Fellowship, will bring their fresh and uplifting stage version of Silas Marner, by George Eliot, to

Horsham next month. The play tells the story of a poor weaver, wrongfully condemned and outcast from society, who becomes a doomed miser and recluse until he is forced to take in

a young orphan girl. Their mutual friendship leads to joy, love and his redemption. Silas Marner, the great Victorian epic novel, is thrillingly and theatrically brought to the stage

in the bicentenary year of George Eliot’s birth by the acclaimed Conn Artists Theatre Company, following on from their hit production of The Four Men. The heart moving action, set in the early years of the 19th century, is performed by an ensemble cast of seven actors accompanied by music and songs of the period. Silas Marner was adapted for the stage by Geoffrey Beevers from George Eliot’s novel of the same name. Originally created by Geoffrey for the Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, this revival by Conn Artists Theatre Company is to tour the play regionally for the first time. Supported by Arts Council England, The George Eliot Fellowship and Worthing Theatres, the production will tour to 14 venues after the Connaught Theatre. The story contains powerful and socially engaging themes relevant to audiences today, including the integration of the lonely individual into the community, and explores social cohesion; the goodness to be found in everyday human relations, the importance of acts of kindness between people; the pursuit of money not leading to happiness; adoption; and the chance of salvation from a point of spiritual despair. This, explained Conn Artists, is why they have chosen to produce the piece, as “the issues explored are so topical, especially when

considering immigration, the break-up or loss of communities, more diverse and unconventional forms of family life; and today’s over-emphasis on the accumulation of wealth”. Director Nick Young, who trained as a director with the Royal Shakespeare Company, said: “The stage version of Silas Marner is a wonderful opportunity for actors to create live theatre- its sounds and actions, using the simplest of props to create a whole community and drama. Masks and puppets are used to enhance the production. The great range of three-dimensional characters, and the moral dilemmas faced by many of them, offers performers enormous scope, whilst at the same time creating an ensemble company. “Silas Marner is a multi-faceted piece of work which draws the audience in, has them sitting on the edge of their seats, makes them worry about what will be the outcome of a situation, and allows them to rejoice in the ‘happily ever after’ conclusion, which has only been earned through the behaviour of the eponymous hero.” Performance: Sunday 13 October, 7.30pm, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. Tickets: (From £18.50) available online: thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220.

BILLIONAIRE BOY

Tilgate Park was filled with the sound of music as the St Catherine’s Hospice festival-inspired event, Live at the Lake, returned for a second year of fun over the weekend. Taking place across two days for the first time, over 4,000 visitors enjoyed a range of family friendly entertainment including a games tent, glitter station, inflatables and merchandise stalls. On Friday evening (6 September), the original Brother from Another took to the stage to warm up the crowd with unique covers of all their favourite songs. Headliners, Best of WHAM! then took to the stage to get the crowd go-going to some of WHAM!’s biggest hits, including Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Club Tropicana.

Turning up the volume on the Saturday (7 September) were three of the UK’s biggest tribute bands, supported by the brilliant The Bendecho Brothers and Angel Delights. Following an energetic performance from the Rocket Man himself, Elite Elton, the Stayin’ Alive crew brought the Saturday Night Fever before ABBA Forever gave a Super Trouper performance as the festival headliners, with their set list, including all the classics such as Dancing Queen, Money, Money, Money, Waterloo, Mamma Mia and Chiquita! Elite Elton said: “The atmosphere at Live at the Lake was incredible and I had such a great time! It was brilliant to see so many local people enjoying the festival, and knowing that we were helping to raise vital

funds for a local charity made the day even more special. Thank you to everyone who came to support us and St Catherine’s”. St Catherine’s is delighted with the support for their first two day Live at the Lake event. Hannah Liles, Events Project Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us over the weekend. We had a brilliant time and hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three people who need us, but with our community’s support, in the future, we want to be there for everyone who needs us.” To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice, visit: www. stch.org.uk

Horsham fight back, only to edged out at Chichester Saturday September 7 – RFU London 1 South League Chichester 39 30 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham encountered an intensity seldom faced last season in London 2 South East and now know the level to which they will need to perform every week. But, the Green and Whites will take away plenty of constructive things from the game, notably recovering from a 20 point deficit, to rattle the hosts by winning the second half 21-17, and almost snatching the game with just minutes remaining, only to be frustrated. Tom Johnson kicked two early penalties, the second resulting from a good carry by new skipper Jamie Redmayne either side of a try conceded after giving away possession. Then, Chichester countered with their second try – this time converted - following several phases of pick and go, to lead 12-6 after 18 minutes. Johnson pegged it back with another penalty, but the hosts went further in front with a drop goal, ahead of taking advantage of Horsham’s poor ball retention with a third, maximized, try, the Green and Whites going into the break 22-9 down. The restart began badly for Horsham, with Chichester scoring from a driving maul to lead 29-9 with the game seemingly over, but the entry of Vince Everitt and Nick Bell added impetus for Horsham and the comeback started following a run and kick through from Johnson, with Everitt on hand to score an opportunist try. Joe Wilde then added a further try following a devastating break by Nwachukwu, narrowing the deficit to 29-23 on the hour mark after two conversions. Chichester, though, had a converted try of their own, before Jonny Goward made a great

carry, with Wilde scything through to set up Nwachukwu to cross the line, Johnson’s kick taking the score to 36-30 with ten minutes remaining. Nwachukwu then appeared to have sealed an unlikely Horsham win by outflanking the Chichester defence with another searing break, but after he over-stepped, Chichester kicked a penalty on the stroke of full time, denying Horsham any points, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker reflecting: “Although a disappointing result, both from the loss and the lack of any bonus points, we are focusing on the positives from a closely fought game with a good degree of fight demonstrated by all players. Our set piece went well both at scrum and lineout and when we finally got into our patterns, we created several opportunities which might have seen a different outcome. The problem was a slow start and gifting possession to a well drilled side, leading to a considerable half time deficit. Our usual fluidity in the backs was lacking today, however, when we moved the ball with more precision in the last 20 minutes, we had Chichester worried with the potential of an upset. Notable performances came from Jamie Redmayne, leading the team well, supported by the strong carries of Finn Hillicks and Jonny Whiting along with Ciaran Preston on his league debut, with Aaron Linfield having a busy day and Declan Nwachukwu occupying the defence throughout. But, our man of the match was Tom Johnson, whose flawless kicking kept us in touch when Chichester sought to pull away. We will learn quickly from this first game and look to bounce back with a home win this Saturday - over Beckenham who suffered their own tough start following promotion last year.”

Horsham Ladies up and running on a learning curve

Photo by Richard Ordidge Horsham Ladies 0 65 Hove Ladies B Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although they were beaten by a far more experienced visiting team, there were very encouraging signs from the spirited Horsham Ladies in their well-supported debut match. The Hove side had been together for several seasons, fielding some players accustomed to a higher level, so it was always going to be a challenging start for Horsham, but the 25 ladies in the Horsham squad, give it their all, gaining much from their competitive first match. The 80 minute game was played in quarters with regular changes in personnel to ensure participation of the entire squad, developing experience and skills, and Horsham launched an early attack, displaying talent across the forwards and backs. However, when Hove turned the ball over, they spread it rapidly through their backs and scored a

breakaway converted try for a 7-0 lead. Horsham responded positively, tough tackling by the forwards enabling them to drive powerfully towards the try line, only for Hove to kick long to relieve the Horsham pressure. Hove were then robbed of possession, Horsham launching a counter attack with pace from the backs, showing impressive straight running down the right wing, followed by a second surge down the left in further possession. However, Hove’s know-how told a few minutes later, increasing their advantage to 12-0, despite determined tackles. Hove then dominated possession, but despite wave after wave of attacks, the Horsham defensive line held firm, often pushing back through sheer physicality, preventing addition to the score. Horsham were refreshed after changes, but Hove used their experience to great effect, moving the ball rapidly from their forwards, getting over the line on four occasions, overcoming robust tackling, which repelled further forays. But, when in possession,

Horsham were pinned back by the seasoned Hove defence on the counter attack, with the half time score 34-0. Horsham upped their game after the interval, and, although an early try was conceded, they retained more possession and launched more attacks, with direct running and passing down the line and frequent turnovers achieved, holding the score at 41-0. But, Hove’s experience eventually paid dividends, more rapid moves resulting in running rugby with, in spite of some amazing tackling, a further four tries, one converted. Horsham Ladies may have suffered a heavy defeat, but they benefited enormously from their development and enjoyment, gaining new skills while relishing the camaraderie, as witnessed by the smiles on their faces and fully deserving the rousing applause of the enthusiastic spectators – all of the players, especially novices, learning much, boding well for the many great games that surely beckon.

Pulling power gives Paul Talbot a big lift to World’s Strongest Natural Man 2019 Strongman Martin Read - Sports Reporter Former Horsham rugby captain Paul Talbot followed his father Frank into the game, taking over the reins at the club as it rose up the leagues, and as a forward Paul was always strong, but now he is really turning up the heat by entering the World’s Strongest Natural Man competition in Finland next month. 33 year old Horsham resident Paul told the District Post: “I enjoyed my rugby, but I have always been fascinated by strength sports and being fit gave me a head start when I took it up seriously – but only as a hobby – three years ago”. In a specially prepared 10 week intensive course, Paul trains with hard work and dedication at Horsham’s DUAL STRENGTH + Fitness Gym. He also uses weights

in a power lifting programme with special equipment at an Ifield farm, adding: “I qualified for Finland by coming third at the

I have always been fascinated by strength sports and being fit gave me a head start... Britain’s Strongest Man’s event. The tournaments that I compete in are drugs tested, so it’s a clean sport and I’d like to see it get onto the Olympics agenda.” What will the World’s Strongest Natural Man challenge include in Finland? Paul Talbot says: “It’s a weekend event and Day 1 has a Truck Pull, a Frame Walk – 15 metres with

the frame loaded with weights then there is the Log Press with contestants timed on how many times they can roll the log up their body against the clock, and there will also be a Sack Carry, with the Top 9 from Day 1 going through to Day 2. On Day 2 there will be the Dead Lift, a Loading & Carrying Medley and a 2 Weight Crucifix Hold, with weights held in outstretched arms. Paul Talbot relies on sponsorship to help fund his competitive strong man entries and later in the year he is booked for a record breaker attempt, having set his heart on attaining the British Log Press record. Meanwhile, Paul training with the District Post’s Managing Director, Davey Pearson can be seen at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=ffIMYBlRnUg and there is also a Facebook group.

Extra time goal puts YMCA out of FA Cup Saturday September 7 – FA Cup First Qualifying Round Horsham YMCA 1 2 Margate Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was an entertaining game with depleted Horsham YMCA holding Margate, from two leagues above, until a cruel, desperately late goal denied the opportunity of a replay. Like YM, Margate is celebrating the 90 year occupation of their ground – Hartsdown Park. And, The Gate have a long, honourable history in the FA Cup, stretching back to 1913, since when they have had victories over Football League sides, including Bournemouth, Swansea and Crystal Palace (almost 29,000 seeing their replay at Selhurst Park 40 years ago). Margate have also had memorable FA Cup encounters with Blackpool and Spurs, with 14,000 shoe-horned into Hartsdown Park for the latter game. But, despite the seasiders’ status and FA Cup pedigree, spirited YM, playing with bags of commitment and energy, pushed hard, looking to have earned a rematch, which they fully deserved. Starting as they meant to proceed, YM challenged from the off, with an early probe before Matt Daniel broke through on the left to no avail. Dean Carden then sent

over a long ball, but it was not maximised, before Dan Evans’ high shot was safely gathered by Margate keeper Joseph Tupper. Then, Noel Leighton and James Jeffery combined to test Aaron Jeal in the home goal, ahead of a corner being cleared by YM’s Tony Nwachukwu. Martin Smith subsequently chased through, with YM giving the visitors plenty to think about. Ball retention was a problem for both sides, but the defences were playing well. After Jeal saved a Margate breakaway with his feet, catching and clearing the rebound, Leighton’s weak shot went wide. Margate, though had two more corners, amid James Pearce shooting straight at Tupper and Evans’ attack fizzling out, neither side finding the net up to the break, before which Margate’s Captain and Vice Captain both had to be substituted because of hamstring problems. YM restarted strongly with Nwachukwu heading Luke Gedling’s free kick to Tupper, and earning their first corner when Matt Daniel’s foray was not rejected. But, Margate were also pressing and, following a corner, sub Jack Richards took advantage of some space, crashing in a goal from the left mid way through the second half. With Margate looking for a second goal and YM pressing for an equaliser, opportunities came and went at ei-

ther end, followed by Margate controlling the midfield, until Tupper fumbled Gedling’s free kick, only for the chance to go begging with a weak tap to the keeper. Action continued with a Gedling floater, ahead of another of the outstanding Jeal’s saves, from Adem Ramadam, then Jordan Robbins blazed well over. Martin Smith was then unable to complete an attack, but in a second wave, an excellent YM build up culminated in Matt Daniel putting in the equaliser. YM now had something to bite on, but Margate, too, were thrusting and Elliott Reeves missed out on a golden opportunity, his diving header going wide. Margate, though were not done and cruelly denied YM a replay when a header rebounded off the post for Reeves to scramble in the ball in the 91st minute. Margate were relieved to progress to the next round after Gedling’s long shot came to nought, YM Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “Not one of our four centre backs was able to take the field, so we had players out of position, but I’m very proud of the team for their unstinting effort. We’re disappointed, of course, but we now need to take that fight and form into our league matches.” For video highlights of the game see https://www.youtube.com/watc h?v=rn15C9rdklo&feature=youtu.be

Sunday in Surrey an unwelcome experience for Heath Sunday September 1 Build Base FA Vase Bagshot 2 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read & Andy Criso History was made on Sunday when Heath travelled to Camberley to play in the FA Vase against Combined Counties League side Bagshot, who are ground-sharing this season with their neighbours. Although the game started reasonably well for The Bears, the overall performance was disappointing by comparison with reason matches, and they were undone by a Bagshot goal in each half.

Heath had plenty of early possession and looked especially dangerous attacking down the left flank, with George Cousins causing problems for the home defence with his dribbling skills, and Cameron Watts putting in some smart right wing crosses. And, Heath thought they had taken the lead midway through the half when Cousins put the ball in the net but was foiled by the raised flag in the hand of the Referee’s Assistant, a decision which looked likely to have been overturned by VAR, but such things happen in football and Heath were obliged to put up with it and carry on. But, it was neverthe-

less frustrating when Bagshot took the lead just before the break with a wonder strike from their No. 8, Josh Nice, who hammered a left foot 25 yarder that crashed against Conor Evento’s cross bar and down into the net. Heath’s hopes that this would spur them on to better things in the second half failed to materialise, the home-side adding their second when a corner from the left was whipped in to the near post and headed home by the diminutive Alex Jeffers, crowning the Bears’ misery. Bagshot were worthy winners on the day – maintaining Heath’s record of never having won a game on a Sunday.

Defensive errors see Heath out of the Peter Bentley Cup Tuesday September 3 Peter Bentley (League) Cup Broadbridge Heath 2 4 Loxwood Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After Broadbridge Heath drew 2-2 with Loxwood in the first match at Heath’s new Countryside Stadium at the beginning of the season, their near neighbours returned for a Peter Bentley Cup encounter, but this time the result was not so palatable for Heath, exiting the competition at the first stage. And, in the space of two days Heath had conceded six goals, scoring two in return. However, in contrast to the previous Sunday’s game at Bagshot, Heath did offer much attractive and effective attacking

play which should have had more reward, but unfortunately, a series of defensive errors cancelled out the Bear’s good work in attack. First, Loxwood’s Tom Frankland skipped inside Heath defender Jamie Robinson for Matt Hards’ shot to squeeze under Conor Evento’s arm to open the scoring. But, the visitor’s lead was shortlived, Robinson turning the tables by jinking down the left wing to set up Jamie Taylor for a cool finish from the edge of the box. The half ended 1-1 with Heath shortening their game and putting the visitors under pressure, gaining a series of corners. And, Heath started the second half on the front foot, too, but were pegged back when Frankland’s cross was deflected into the net by a combination of Alfie Jones and

a Loxwood forward. Tim Bennett then made it 3-1 with a powerful shot swerving past Evento. Heath, though, were not finished, Robinson and George Cousins combining down the left to set up Taylor who out muscled a defender to finish from six yards. Yet, while Heath continued to create chances with Loxwood keeper Di Lucia pulling off excellent stops from Taylor and Cousins, it was Loxwood who completed the scoring when, after Evento blocked a header, Matt Boiling reacted faster than the Heath defenders to make it 4-2. Although, with goalmouth action at either end, this was a very entertaining game for a neutral observer, Heath will hope to defend a lot more effectively in future matches.

Horsham YMCA bow out of the RUR Cup Saturday August 31 – Royal Ulster Rifles Challenge Cup – First Round Horsham YMCA 1 3 AFC Uckfield Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA has won the RUR Cup twice, lastly in 2014, but, for the second year running, they exited the competition at the first stage. Encounters with Uckfield are always competitive, YM completing a league double over the visitors in the previous campaign, the scoreline being 4-3 on both occasions, but in last season’s Peter Bentley Cup Semi Final The Oakmen shaded YM by the odd goal in five, those three matches yielding 19 goals. The RUR Cup clash was marred by a serious looking, painful injury to Uckfield’s Callum Smith in the opening minutes, delaying play significantly, Smith having to be stretchered off ahead of a prolonged wait for an ambulance. When play resumed Bailo Camera put the visitors ahead, but Luke Gedling soon equalised with a shot from the edge of the area,

the score remaining 1-1 at the break, YM having played well in patches. Five minutes into the second half, sub Liam Baitup restored Uckfield’s lead, YM foregoing an opportunity to draw level when Dean Carden was unable to convert from the penalty spot. Then, with 20 minutes of full time remaining, Baitup found the net again, before YM thought they had reduced the deficit, only for their header from a free kick to be declared offside, the game culminating with sub Ash Dugdale stabbing wide. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “Our injury woes continue – Tom Gilbert was side-lined during the warm up and Ash Dugdale is awaiting surgery in a couple of weeks. Although the result might have been fair enough – its goals that count - the turning points were their second, allowed despite strong appeals for offside, the missed penalty and, after we’d broken away, a goal line tap in that somehow escaped. But, I was very pleased with the performances of the youngsters that we were obliged to field – Pat Gibbs looks like a long term first teamer.”

Wonder save deprives YMCA of a point Tuesday August 27 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 0 1 Horley Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On a rare visit to YM’s Home Family Lawyers’ Stadium, Horley Town shaded the hosts by the only goal of the game. YM started quietly, Horley having most of the play, with Ryan Brackpool firing straight at Aaron Jeal in the home goal, followed by two corners before YM had a set piece of their own. Three more Horley corners came and went, without the Surrey side looking unduly threatening. Tony Halsey then shot well adrift for Horley, preceding other wayward attempts, including a close range opportunity slotted wide, left-footed by James McEllgott, and as chances evaporated at either end it seemed that a single goal would probably decide the encounter, the score remaining goal-less at the break. Play resumed with former YM striker Alex Barbary blaz-

ing over for the visitors before each side had more unfulfilled corners. Then, 10 minutes into the second half, a goal finally emerged, Horley taking the lead when Dale Burgess lifted the ball over Jeal’s head with the keeper unable to get back. A Halsey effort subsequently landed on the roof of the net amid fractious representations to the ref generating yellow cards. YM substitutions injected more urgency, a Luke Gedling free kick testing the opposition as YM pressed for a point with all 11 players in the Horley area for a corner. But, Tom Gilbert’s header induced a brilliant save by George Hyde in the Horley goal, time running out with YM pushing for parity, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “We deserved something out of that for our second half performance. We’re still plagued by injuries - had we been able to put out our first team we would have won. Where did their keeper come from to keep out Tom’s header? On another day we might have had a penalty, but that’s football! On a positive note, sub Ash Wadhams looks a real prospect.”

Horsham squeak a thriller to go through in FA Cup Saturday September 7 – FA Cup First Qualifying Round Metropolitan Police 1 1 Horsham Replay – Tuesday September 10 – Horsham 3 2 Met Police Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham bounced back from a disappointing draw at East Molesey with a dramatic last gasp win in Tuesday’s replay, with 445 spectators in attendance despite the England match. Manager Dom di Paola felt that the rematch should have been unnecessary after Horsham had dominated the majority of Saturday’s game, led at the break, but then conceded an equaliser without being able to regain the lead even though the Met played the last quarter with a man down. On Saturday, the Met put Horsham under the cosh in the opening minutes, but Olli Robinson’s header was off target, then Jack Mazzone hit the Hornets’ crossbar. But, Horsham went ahead when Zack Newton escaped to supply Chris Smith, who banged it home. Four minutes later Smith got the ball in the net again, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag. He continued tormenting but could not quite connect, the first half ending 1-0 in Horsham’s favour af-

ter Hornets’ keeper George Bentley was tested. Resuming, Horsham immediately created pressure, but Smith’s shot evaded the goal, before he combined unsuccessfully with Charlie Harris. Bentley then saved, but Knight soon equalised with an airborne header. After Jordi Nzodid was sent off for serial offending, both sides had near misses, the game ending 1-1. Tuesday’s replay was a proper cup tie – fast and exciting with an abundance of opportunities – an appropriate first FA Cup game for The Camping World Community Stadium. Horsham started quietly and had early scares when a free kick crashed into the upright, followed by a Met corner, and a saved header. Then, after 9 minutes, unmarked Bilal Sayoud unleashed a superb blast and Horsham were one down. But, they were getting more possession and mounting attacks, Charlie Harris, Harvey Sparks, Chris Smith and Joe Shelley all keeping the Met on their toes. Bentley was called upon, but Horsham were in control and it was no surprise when they levelled the score, Sparks breaking down the left for a well hit goal from a tight angle just before the break. Restarting, the Met had a free kick, but action switched to the other end, Zack Newton racing through for a pinpoint cross to

Photo by John Lines Smith, who gave Horsham the lead. Next, Met sub Rhys King missed from point blank range, but, with the visitors getting more of the ball, Luke Robinson had enough space to unleash an excellent strike, restoring parity with just 9 minutes of normal time remaining. Horsham had a corner, yet the Met were calling the shots, Hani

Benchiche heading just over. The Hornets, though, were not done, Kieron Pamment celebrating his return with a cross for Smith to scramble in for a 3-2 lead in the 90th minute. The Met had another corner and Mazzone rattled the crossbar with a top strike, but Horsham had pinched the game, CEO John Lines telling the District Post:

“I’m absolutely thrilled! We’re rewarded with a home tie with Dartford (on Saturday 21st) and I’m sure they’ll bring a good crowd. We went a bit flat in the second half, but came back brilliantly!” This Saturday the Hornets return to league action with a visit to the Essex coast to play Brightlingsea Regent.

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This season, Horsham YMCA will see an even richer diversity of football with both Horsham Sparrows’ women’s team and the newly formed under 17s side playing at YM’s Horsham Family Lawyers Stadium at Gorings Mead. This exciting development has strengthened the links between two of Horsham’s best recognised clubs and provides a great opportunity for more players and teams to enjoy the superb facilities that

Horsham YMCA FC has to offer. Horsham Sparrows FC is the town’s only FA Community Charter Club and was a founding member of the local boys & Sussex Women’s football leagues, and this year, the club boasts an incredible 20 squads including boys, girls and women’s teams, with age groups ranging from under 8s through to adult. Horsham YMCA FC recently celebrated 90 years of football at Gorings Mead and continues to prosper with a senior squad playing in the Premier Division of the Southern Combination Football

League and an Under 23s team competing in the Southern Counties Combination West league – and, the links between the two clubs were forged over 3 years ago. A number of events have been organised, including the hugely successful YM day, when senior boys’ teams from Horsham Sparrows invite friendly opposition to play in mini round robin tournaments at YMCA. Horsham Sparrows’ Simon King is full of enthusiasm for the future saying: “This is a great opportunity for our players to enjoy the excellent YMCA pitch

and clubhouse. We’ve always had a great affinity with our friends at YM and, both clubs have worked hard to put everything in place - we’re looking forward to welcoming teams from across the Horsham district and the wider Sussex area!” He added “Following the recent success of the Lionesses at the Women’s World Cup we’ve seen a steady rise in the number of girls and women wanting to play football, and to have a venue such as YMCA gives a great local opportunity for both female players and spectators alike.” The Sparrows’ under 17s team plays at

YM on alternate Sunday mornings, and are coached by former YM Club Captain Daryn Benn. Both squads are always pleased to welcome potential new players, so anyone interested in participating is invited to do so through the club’s website - www.horshamsparrows.co.uk In their inaugural game at YMCA, Horsham Sparrows Women thoroughly enjoyed their outing against their counterparts from Rustington FC last Sunday – and the end to end game saw the hosts run out 5-2 winners with both teams relishing the experience of playing on YM’s great surface in beautiful weather.
