Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter

Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

“The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

Following statements that the owners of the restaurant have found trading on the site a

challenge due to its location away from the centre of Horsham, causing them to look at possible alternative locations to accommodate the restaurant more centrally, planning application DC/19/1527 has been submitted to Horsham District Council to demolish the restaurant and erect a block of flats on the land. The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

The NHS called on parents to keep asthma medicine close at hand shortly after the Summer break, with children up to three times more likely to need medical help as the school year starts. One in ten young people has asthma, with spikes in demand for help from GPs and hospitals in the weeks after school holidays, and an annual peak for children in September.

The District Post Ltd The Bottings 26 North Street Horsham West Sussex RH12 1RQ

Last year saw 25,128 cases of under-16s going to hospital with asthma, while recent analysis published by Public Health England found that GP appointments for children with asthma increase this month, with cases more than doubling and boys more likely to need help, while the total number of emergency hospital admissions for asthma typically jumps between August and September from around 3,500 to more than 6,000. The combination of coughs and colds circulating, children getting out of the habit of using inhalers during the summer break, air pollution and the stress of term

starting, is thought to contribute to the spike in asthma cases. Asthma is a lung condition causing breathing difficulties, which can occur randomly or after exposure to a trigger like pollen, pollution, smoke, infections, colds and flu, and is among the issues being targeted by a new Children and Young People Transformation programme, a major new initiative from the NHS, working across the health service and with families to address the biggest challenges to the health of young people. The country’s top medics urge young people and their parents to prioritise taking their medication and preventer inhalers as prescribed, as millions of families prepared for the new school year. Asthma is the most common long-term medical condition for children in the UK, and being with a new group of classmates can also lead to the spreading of germs, cold and flu bugs. Jacqueline Cornish, National Clinical Director, Children and Young People and Transition to Adulthood, NHS England said: “Millions of families know that asthma can bring stress and trauma, but simple common sense measures like taking medicines at the right time, giving children a spare puffer to take to school and checking in with a pharmacist for inhaler checks, can help parents manage the annual onset of ‘asthma season’ and go a long way to helping keep your child well and out of hospital. “The NHS Long Term Plan sets out a package of measures to identify and treat this common - but potentially lethal - condition, but the health service cannot meet this challenge alone and needs parents, carers and schools to help reduce the likelihood of avoidable asthma attacks this month, while in the long term, the whole of society has to crack down on the scourge of air pollution, which contributes to thousands of illnesses and hospital trips every year.” At the start of the new school year, Dr Andy Whittamore, Clinical Lead at Asthma UK and a practising GP, said: “The ‘Back to School’ effect of asthma can be frightening and potentially lifethreatening for children returning to classrooms this week. It’s easy for children to fall out of routines over the summer and forget to take their asthma medicines. This means their asthma is a ticking time bomb and then when they catch a cold or flu at school, they are at risk of having a potentially life-threatening asthma attack. “Parents can follow simple steps to cut the risk of their child having an asthma attack, such as giving the school a reliever inhaler for their child and a copy of their asthma action plan. They should also ensure that their child takes their preventer inhaler, this helps to build up protection in their airways over time so that if they come into contact with triggers such as colds, they are less likely to have an asthma attack. Adults also need to know how to spot when their child’s asthma is getting worse and know what to

do if they have an attack and can get information and support from www.asthma.org.uk/back-toschool. “If a child is using their reliever inhaler (usually blue) three or more times a week, coughing or wheezing at night or feeling out of breath and struggling to keep up with their friends, parents should book them an urgent appointment with their GP.” We recently took our daughter, Catalina, to see a GP just days after she started secondary school. This time of year is always a worry for me and my husband, with regards to Catalina’s asthma. During the colder months, there are always going to be the inevitable cold and flu cases popping up; That’s to be expected. Unfortunately, catching a simple cold can, to an asthma sufferer, trigger an attack. In our case, Catalina got unlucky and happened to pick up what’s going around the moment she started secondary school. Fortunately, we’re all up to speed with her asthma plan, checking her peak flow etc. and she is strict with her preventative medication routine - the brown inhaler. If this hadn’t been in place, I think the attack (though still serious) could have been so much worse. We learnt a long time ago to keep spare inhalers all over the place. We always provided Catalina’s school with one; She carries two around in her school bag; I have one in my car and in my handbag, and we have a couple of them stocked in our medicine cupboard, but this is just in case she should need them. Obviously, we’d rather her come to us and say, “This inhaler’s out of date” than have her request more, because she needs it. The NHS outlines some simple steps parents can take to ensure their son or daughter’s treatment is managed and kept under control, including: 1.Having a child’s up-to-date written asthma action plan prepared by a GP. The school should also have a copy of the child’s asthma action plan and teachers should be aware if pupils help using their puffer 2.Ensure your child gets back into their asthma routine before the school year starts, including taking preventer medications every day if prescribed 3.Check with the pharmacist that your child is using their inhaler if they are old enough to use it by themselves 4.Have a check-up before the school year sports lessons start 5.Pack a spare reliever puffer and spacer in your child’s school bag, checking that the puffer isn’t empty or out of date 6.Talk to the school about possible asthma triggers and whether staff members receive training on how to recognise and respond to asthma symptoms Asthma UK also provides advice to parents about how to cut the risk of attacks, including speaking to a nurse if there are concerns about medication and helping children to get into the habit of using their inhaler.

Horsham Labour Party Organise Mass Unwrap On Saturday 14 September, members of Horsham Labour Party took part in Horsham’s first ever Mass Unwrap. The event, which took place in Waitrose, encouraged shoppers to think about the amount of packaging that comes with a weekly shop, and to reject any unnecessary packaging by leaving it behind in an especially arranged excess packaging depot. Shoppers adjusting their behaviour and showing that they don’t want surplus packaging is intended to encourage producers to think about reducing packaging and, therefore, their impact on the environment. Horsham Labour Party Secretary, David Hide, who coordinated the event, commenting afterwards said: “In view of much publicised concerns about single use plastic, the aim of the event was to highlight the amount of packaging incorporated into a weekly shop and to encourage shoppers to think

differently about the products they purchase. While recycling is an increasingly important aspect of waste management, reducing the amount of packaging, in particular, hard and soft plastics,

in the first instance must be our goal” Shoppers enthusiastically engaged with this event and many expressed an interest in seeing ‘Waitrose Unpacked’ introduced into Horsham’s store.

While £2.4m has been invested in research into the condition by the Government in recent years at the request of the group Mr Quin is investigating where the invest-

ment was made and how those with Fibromyalgia can best benefit from advances in pain relief. Mr Quin commented “Living with a long term condition which can be so painful and debilitating is very tough. I am sympathetic to the call for research investment in this field and want to ensure that those with the condition are kept informed of progress being made.” Jackie Bull on behalf of the group said “The Group meets regularly and members find our mutual support extremely helpful. New members are always welcome and can learn more about us by emailing our group on fmshorsham@gmail.com and Mr Quin has also kindly offered to pass on our details to anyone interested in hearing more if you contact him on jeremy.quin.mp@ parliament.uk.”

Helping to prevent suicide across Horsham District

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Tuesday 10 September, Horsham District Council teamed up with the local Samaritans to organise various activities throughout the week. All Neighbourhood Warden teams across the District got involved by visiting local clubs, meeting residents and handing out information packs, encouraging people who were feeling distressed or anxious to talk to friends and family, or to call the Samaritans. The Horsham Wardens and

Samaritans jointly hosted a small gazebo outside the RSA building and also in the Carfax. They handed out 400 information packs and offered advice and support. The Storrington wardens had a stall in the library to share information and have a cup of tea and a chat with residents. The Billingshurst wardens had a stand in the community centre, to hand out information and offer support. The Steyning, Bramber and Upper Beeding wardens spent time in

Girlguiding Horsham receives funds to renovate roof Girlguiding Horsham has received £500 of funding to help renovate its hall roof after winning a community fund campaign run by locally based builders’ merchant NYEs Building Supplies. The girlguiding division has been part of the town for well over 100 years and was gifted a campsite over 60 years ago – formerly part of a Horsham Stone quarry. Volunteers have spent many years turning it into three separate campsites, which are used by Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Pam Brakes, who is Horsham Division Administrator at Girlguiding Horsham, submitted the nomination. She said: “The Division was given a building in the late 1920s, which has been converted into the Head Quarters. It has been extended a couple of times over the

years and alterations have mainly been self-funded. However, the hall roof now needs some attention and it is estimated it will cost approximately £25,000 to repair. “Receiving this generous funding from NYEs will really help to make a difference. Thank you to everyone who voted for us.” Rex Nye, Managing Director of NYEs, added: “Congratulations to Girlguiding Horsham. We are delighted to be able to contribute to its roof renovation project.” Nominations are now being taken for the next round of Proud to be Local and community groups, charities and worthy causes all have the chance to receive £500 funding. Indian Summer hits the UK next week and could bring with it a mosquito invasion! With temperatures predicted to reach up to 23 degrees in Horsham, and 25 degrees in parts of the UK, this weekend and next week, there’s no doubt that Brits will be preparing to enjoy one last warm weekend outdoors before Autumn officially hits. However, they should be warmed, as along with the humid air, this unexpected change in weather conditions could also bring with it an invasion of mosquitos and other biting insects! Science Professor and Entomologist, Adam Hart, explained: “An Indian Summer and a bout of warm weather means that insects become much more active. This combined with wanting to spend time outdoors before the cold weather and winter comes, means we are much more likely to get bitten by mosquitoes and other insects around. This is something we are not used to for this time of year and we seemingly forget to take the necessary precautions, such as wearing insect repellent. “Insect repellent like DEET and covering up bare skin, go a very long way to avoiding mosquito bites. To avoid stings from any bees and wasps that may be around, try to avoid attracting them to your location; keep food and drink covered and if they do appear in numbers consider moving somewhere else. Try not to swat at them – it may turn them into defensive mode and make

them more likely to sting.” With these warmer conditions also comes the fear that the Zika carrying Asian Tiger mosquito, could become more prevalent in the UK. “Being an island offer some protection to us but many insects can get to the UK in all kinds of ways - whether it is in imported timber, on plants, stowaways in our holiday packing. The Asian Tiger mosquito has been previously identified in the UK, but doesn’t currently pose a threat” continued Adam. So what should we do if we are unlucky enough to get bitten or stung? Adam’s answer: “For bites, the best thing to do is to try and not get bitten in the first place and wear insect repellent – but that is easier said than done! Don’t scratch it! Take an antihistamine as recommended by your pharmacist. Topical and oral remedies are usually looking to chemically reduce the effects of histamine that your body is producing in response to the bite or sting. It is the histamine response that cause the swelling and itching and this is why such treatments are called “anti”-histamines. Heat therapy treatment, such as bite away can work very quickly to relieve symptoms, especially itching. The heat causes a signal in the nerves around the site that interferes with the nerve signals that cause

Environment Activism ‘Stunningly Timely’ By Patrick Wynne-Jones In the week when Horsham’s environment action groups pool resources in the town’s first ‘Climate Emergency’ exhibition, Britain’s former Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Sir David King, announces himself “frightened” by the pace of Global Warming and states “we have to all pull together and act to stop it”. That statement by Britain’s leading scientist powerfully echoes the ‘action now’ message which local campaigners have urged on Horsham District Council and which newly-formed co-ordinating body, the South East Climate Alliance (SECA), is promoting at county and national level. District Post readers will have seen the June report of HDC’s reluctance to meet calls for the specific declaration of a Climate Emergency for the Horsham area – a move made by over 80 councils in our region and a demand described by leading environmental campaigner Nicola Peel as “stunningly timely in view of current developments”. However, lack of that declaration has not diminished calls for greater local focus on sustainability – calls which evoked the recent

public announcement by Council Leader Ray Dawe: “at the AGM I specifically appointed a cabinet member for environmental matters. I also said that we would be undertaking a carbon audit of HDC’s activities via the Carbon Trust, so that members and the public can understand what practical and quantifiable progress we are making and I think it is important to do that. I understand that this audit will be taking place very soon”. Councillor Dawe also expressed his intention to discuss with colleagues their thoughts on a Community Year of Green Action – the ‘YOGA’ concept urged by campaigners with calls to include such concepts as public recycling bins alongside rubbish bins in the high streets (as standard in many locations), provision to recycle food waste into compost (re-saleable at a profit), and ‘upcycling’ of quality undamaged items via a shop at Hop Oast Recycling Centre (as demonstrated in the TV series ‘Money for Nothing’). Following a packed-out foundation meeting on the 4th of this month local activists now include Horsham’s own branch of Extinction Rebellion, a group which can be expected to add to those and to other calls in the future.

Battlehurst Farm is finalist of Healthy Herd Competition

James Lywood and Michael Dennison, National Sales Manager Semex UK The first stage of the Semex Healthy Herd Competition has concluded, revealing James Lywood, Battlehurst Farm, Billinghurst as one of six regional finalists. Mr Lywood will now go on to compete for the title of the UK’s Healthiest Herd. Created to recognise and reward the UK’s healthiest herds, the competition was open to all UK dairy farmers irrespective of size, breed, farming system or calving pattern. Michael Dennison, UK National Sales Manager for Semex, commented: “We were very impressed with the standard of entries all of whom truly embrace the Semex ethos of having a heathy herd is the key to future success.

Our judges had faced a real challenge in narrowing the farms down to the final six”. The panel of judges consisted of UK Veterinary Consultant, Rob Drysdale, Lancashire dairy farmer, Phil Halhead, Editor of British Dairying Magazine, Mike Green and Semex Regional Sales Manager, Andrew Axford. Commenting on the task in hand, Rob Drysdale said: “Having been asked to judge this new competition for Semex, I was really excited to see so many farm businesses who fitted the remit for a “healthy herd”. Selecting the regional winners was not easy and all six finalists demonstrate excellent levels of all-round farm, business and herd health.

Milking 200 cows in West Sussex, Battlehurst Farm has made considerable investment in technology and management systems over the last 12 months in order to improve overall herd health and welfare. The judges were impressed with the number of herd protocols the business has in place to maximise herd health. James said: “I am delighted for the farm and the herd to be recognised as a finalist for the Healthy Herd competition. Herd Health is massively important to the farm from a cow welfare point of view and for profitability. I can only praise the farm team along with our Vet and consultant for their expertise and attention to detail.” The other five finalists are: David Hamilton, Barr Farm, Stirlingshire, Scotland; Karen & Tom Halton, Halton Farms, Congleton, Cheshire; Chris Foster, Shortwaite Farm, Whitby, North Yorkshire; John Banks, Wildon Grange Farm, Coxwold, Yorkshire; Rhodri Ellis, Ty Newydd Farm, Denbigh, Wales. The six regional finalists will now go onto the next stage of the competition to select 3 finalists to be announced in November with the overall winner being announced at the Semex International Dairy Conference in January 2020. Rob concluded: “Selecting the overall winner is going to be tough, but I am looking forward to the challenge, having seen their entries and supporting Vet information”.

St Catherine’s Hospice Dragon Boat Festival returns with a splash! The St Catherine’s Hospice annual Dragon Boat Festival returned to Tilgate Park in style, earlier this month, for a fantastic day of free family fun! On Sunday 8 September, thousands of people attended the event which saw 34 teams, made up of local businesses, battle it out to be crowned Dragon Boat Champions 2019. Among the contenders were Horsham businesses; Coole Bevis, ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd, Fisher Clinical, Forza Doors and Thakeham based in Billingshurst. Trevor Pratt, Group HR Manager at ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd, said: “ERG (Air Pollution Control) Ltd is delighted to support St Catherine’s again through our participation in their Dragon Boat Festival. The staff at St Catherine’s do such dedicated work, and this year’s race has even more poignancy for us as one of our colleagues unfortunately passed away at St Catherine’s in February.” On the lake, teams showed true team spirit as they raced across the water in Chinese Dragon Boats. After a full day of races, in a tightly fought final, FFGS Golf Society powered through and were crowned champions, with a winning time of 52 seconds, which was five seconds faster than last year’s winners. Close behind, in second place,

were Beemer, with Thakeham taking the third place trophy. Winning teams were presented with medals and trophies by Giles Tomsett, Chief Executive at St Catherine’s, and The Worshipful Mayor of Crawley, Councillor Raj Sharma. St Catherine’s Dragon Boat Festival is one of the hospice’s biggest fundraisers. The charity states that by supporting this event, local people have made sure that terminally ill people in their community can receive care and support when it matters most: “This community support has never been more vital because currently, St Catherine’s can only care for one in three people who need their support. With the help of local people attending events, the hospice wants to make sure that, in the future, nobody faces death and loss alone.” Suzanne Davis, Corporate Fundraiser at St Catherine’s, said: “We’d like to thank everyone who supported or took part in our Dragon Boat Festival. Your efforts take us a step nearer to reaching everyone who needs us. We hope you all enjoyed the day as much as we did!” To find out about future St Catherine’s events, or how you can support the hospice or make a donation, please visit: www.stch. org.uk.

Horsham Boutiques Join Gok Wan On The Catwalk

Photos by ELLE Bright Photography Ltd

MICHELLE BETTS

ByJove Media

Gok Wan, award winning fashion stylist and TV host, launched his new fashion and style event in Sussex last Saturday. At One Size Fits All Gok, in his own inimitable style, hosted two catwalk shows, held a body shape masterclass, a trend analysis, and a Q&A session, taking questions from the 350 strong audience. Two local Horsham businesses joined Gok on the catwalk to

showcase outfits from their current collections. Deja!, located in Park Place, and La Vida Boutique, in Stan’s Way close to Piries Place, were invited by Gok to join him and his team of stylists at the inaugural One Size Fits All event in Brighton. Gok is keen to support the British High Street and with One Size Fits All, sets out to champion and celebrate local and independent brands, while empowering and supporting women. Deja! and La Vida Boutique each put ten catwalk looks together to walk Gok’s catwalk and the looks went down a storm with the audience! With ooh’s and aah’s as the

models showcased each outfit, people certainly showed their support for these local Sussex businesses. All the looks can be seen on their Facebook pages, @dejahorsham and @lavidaboutique. Gok said he’s ‘the biggest fan of the British High Street, no one does it better than the Brits’. He went on to say ‘there is so much incredible talent dotted round the county, small independent boutiques to showcase.’ These two Horsham boutiques epitomise Gok’s sentiments. Deja! opened it’s doors in 2017 and has gone from strength to strength. Owner Angie Maskell has three

exciting lines in her ladies fashion boutique, DEJA! Fashion, DEJA! Boutique & DEJA! Plus. She also offers free styling sessions & alterations. Angie’s ethos is all about instilling confidence and she aims to make it a fun experience too! You can pop in on a Saturday to enjoy a glass of bubbly while you browse the latest collections. Angie said after the catwalk show with Gok, ‘Saturday was an amazing experience with fun and laughter plus informative masterclasses a great opportunity for us to showcase our Autumn/Winter collection. Gok Wan’s enthusiasm and support for independent retailers

was greatly encouraging in these challenging times. Long live the great British High street!’ La Vida Boutique is celebrating its 20th birthday this year and specialises in affordable luxury in ladies fashion and accessories. At La Vida Boutique fashion is about attitude, not age! The range is constantly evolving, as owner Donna Camera only buys collections in limited quantities allowing La Vida customers to enjoy unique pieces separating them from the usual high street crowd. This is part of the La Vida difference and allows the Boutique to stock very individual products that reflect your personality. Donna’s personal shopping service is a particularly popular service, and as a fashion stylist herself, she styles clients for different events and occasions. Following the La Vida Boutique outfits showcase with Gok, Donna said ‘Gok Wan was an absolute legend. Hilariously funny & down to earth but also incredibly knowledgeable & passionately inspiring. He is a wonderful supporter of independent boutiques like La Vida Boutique on the High Street, and this event is an amazing way to show his commitment to this. I was delighted when he told me he’d love to work in my shop as he loved the prints and the styles from the Boutique! What a fabulous event to work with him on.’ With the latest figures showing on Britain’s top 500 high streets,1,234 shops shut in the first half of 2019, the High Street needs champions like Gok to encourage people to go out and support their local retailers like Deja! And La Vida Boutique. So instead of looking online this weekend, head out to your local Sussex High Street and visit your shops. You never know what you might find and there are some fabulous people waiting to meet and help you in those shops. If we don’t support our local retailers, we won’t have a High Street left to visit.

Hall & Woodhouse receives food hygiene rating of five across all managed houses Hall & Woodhouse has been awarded a food hygiene rating of five by the local authorities at every pub in its managed house estate across the south. The 52 pubs that make up Hall & Woodhouse’s managed house estate stretch from Bristol to Exeter, and London to Brighton. In Sussex, Hall & Woodhouse has seven managed houses, including The Black Rabbit in Arundel, The World’s End in Patching and The Hornbrook Inn, Horsham. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is facilitated by the Food Standards Agency in partnership with local Councils to provide strict guidelines on the hygiene standards of businesses that sell food such as cafes, restaurants and pubs. The scheme also allows guests to be educated on a business’ hygiene standards and therefore make more informed decisions about where

they wish to dine. All 52 of Hall & Woodhouse’s managed houses were assessed on the handling of food, how food is stored and prepared, the cleanliness of facilities and how food safety is managed during the inspections. As all the pubs have received a rating of five, which is top of the scale and it means the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law. The Environmental Health Officers that carried out the inspections commended the pubs for the kitchen management diary system. This was developed with Shield Safety Group and plays a crucial role in how the pubs’ management teams and chefs manage their kitchen standards. Ryan Cobb, Group Safety Manager of Hall & Woodhouse, explained: “We are extremely proud of our General Managers and kitchen

teams who have been dedicated to the ‘Drive for Five’ and achieving this ambitious goal of reaching five Food Hygiene Ratings across the board. Integrity is a key value to us at Hall & Woodhouse and we have now been recognised for our commitment to imbedding a high level of food hygiene standards. Our approach has focused on making safety simple and nurturing a positive food safety culture to empower our teams to incorporate the highest standards of food safety and hygiene practices into their roles daily; it’s what our guests expect.” Hall & Woodhouse is an independent family company that brews award-winning Badger ales and runs a managed house estate of 52 beautiful pubs across the south of England. The business is dedicated to supporting the Sussex community and its causes, having invested more than £5million into

the county over the past five years, on top of their regular and extensive charity donations.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra open Hawth’s classical season

The opening concert in the 2019-20 orchestral season, Italian Romance, celebrates Italy’s rich tradition of orchestral music on Friday 11 October, 7.30pm at The Hawth. Performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hawth’s resident orchestra, The overture to Mozart’s sharply satirical Così fan tutte opera provides a playful opening to the performance, which gives way to Mariucci’s lush and pensive Notturno, with its yearning melodic lines and soothing orchestration. A highlight of this evening will be Bruch’s much-loved Violin Concerto No.1 performed by Italian violinist Francesca Dego. This piece unleashes the full spectrum of the instrument and to this day is one of

the most popular works in the violin repertoire. Mendelssohn’s buoyant and cheerful Symphony No.4, ‘Italian’ closes this concert with panache and flair; a charming expression of how Italy made him feel. Tickets: £18 - £32 (child: £10), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk If you have never been to a classical concert at The Hawth before, you can enjoy a top price ticket (RRP £32) for just £15. It’s the perfect opportunity to hear a selection of musical masterpieces by the internationally orchestra and maybe even discover a new passion. To take advantage of this offer, please call The Hawth Box Office. (Offer subject to availability).

Drama for all: HORSHAM drama classes for adults with Special Needs Ariel is pleased to announce the opening of a new weekly Horsham drama class for adults with special educational needs. Anyone aged 16 years plus who has a love of music, acting and dance are invited to come along for a free trial session or two at Roffey Millennium Hall. There is no audition process and everyone is welcome. The new class, called ‘Othello’s Adults’, runs every Monday at 6:45pm to 7:45pm and provides the opportunity to learn all about performing. Students work collaboratively with Ariel’s experienced tutors on a wide range of acting, dance and singing pieces in a fun, relaxed and supportive environment. The drama work covers a variety of work, from popular musical theatre numbers to current pop songs, and students also have the chance to create their own original drama pieces, written in conjunction with their tutors. The new classes build on the success of Ariel’s award-winning drama academy classes and the existing Othello’s Junior classes, which have been running for many years. Tutor Dan Shambrook said: “We are delighted to launch this new class. Our Junior Othello’s classes are very popular, but we were finding that once our students became young adults there was nowhere for them to move onto.

Entertainment

got a story? email us at newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk

Horsham Men relinquish Sussex Hockey Cup Saturday September 14 – Sussex Hockey Cup Lewes 6 1 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter On a superb late summer day a new look, young Horsham team, with only two of the players – Freddie Campbell and Joey Humphreys - from the Sussex Cup winning side of last April – were well in touch with Lewes at the break. The hosts took advantage of an inexperienced defence

I’ve played well over a thousand times for the Club since then, but, despite today’s result, I’m still really enjoying it! to end Horsham’s three year tenure of the cup. Coming in to the second half trailing by the single goal on the board, Horsham were hit with three goals in as many minutes. Russell Dale scored for Horsham, but that proved to be just a consolation goal,

two more from Lewes putting the result beyond all doubt. Veteran Horsham goalkeeper Nick Evans kept out a number shots, telling the District Post: “My debut game for Horsham firsts was in 1979 and I reckon I’ve played well over a thousand times for the Club since then, but, despite today’s result, I’m still really enjoying it!” Sam MacDonald is Horsham’s new Captain, in whose absence skipper for the day Joey Humphreys told us: “At half time there was no reason to think that we couldn’t win, but although some players performed well, we had some defensive problems and had a second team out, whereas they had their firsts.” Two former Horsham players were in the Lewes line up – Sam Gill and gollkeeper and former captain, the ever competitive Andy Isaacs, who was determined to beat his old side. Several other experienced players have moved on from Horsham – drag flick expert Sean Pearcy is about to embark on a world trip and Tim Upchurch has joined Brighton. And, while Horsham have signed players, and have a new Coach – East Grinstead player Andy Blood - it might be a challenging season in their new league – South Premiership Division 2 West, in which they will meet Lewes twice more during the forthcoming season.

Billingshurst Old Boys revel in Norfolk anniversary tour

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter 30 years ago Billingshurst 2nd XI famously won the Arun Valley League and went on their last tour of Norfolk. Both celebrated at the club’s President’s day this year, when many former players were welcomed back – from all eras, especially those from the great days of the late 70s to early 90s, and, Roger Lusted told the District Post: “A reunion tour has been planned to commemorate the momentous League victory – the ‘Old Boys Tour to Norfolk’, and I’d love to recreate the photo that we took in 1989!” Ex players were contacted, their kit was relocated and spruced up and, earlier this month a tour party hit the road to the north Norfolk coast, David Sainsbury telling us: “We warmed up for the anniversary game with two days on the

golf course and a series of dinners to mark the occasion. At the Friday night dinner it was lovely to meet some old some friends from the other clubs we used to play.” A special book had been commissioned to tell the story of the four Norfolk Tours - written by David, with photographs by Chris Holmes - and copies were duly presented to everyone at the dinner. Action then reverted to the field for the very special game, at Snettisham Cricket Club, against their quintessentially English village side, with its ground overlooked, as at Horsham, by stunning St Mary’s Church. The venue and opposition were highly appropriate, Snettisham having played host to the Billingshurst side on their last visit. David Sainsbury continues: “Our team included eight members of the 1989 tour and four others who had been on the earlier tours. Notably, the scorer on the day was

Roger Lusted, current Billingshurst CC 1st X1 scorer, who had played in 1989 - and the umpire was Steve Message, once again donning the coat at the ground where he had stood 30 years earlier.” And, in the big game Billingshurst found themselves in the field in a 25 overs a side match, with the visiting bowlers pinning back Snettisham to 99 for 6 in their allotted overs. Ian Lusted was the pick of the attack with 3 for 32, David quipping: “Three more wickets than he took 30 years ago!” Billingshurst openers Ian Poysden and Mark Elliott replied confidently, raising Billingshurst hopes, but the lusty hitting of Francis Ward and John Odell at the end of the innings could not quite get the side over the line, Snettisham winning by 14 runs, with Billingshurst ending on 85-7. At the post-match presentations Billingshurst captain David Sainsbury, taking time out from his other passion – rugby - to fulfil the same cricket role of 30 years ago, suggested that as Snettisham had now tied the series at one apiece, Billingshurst should return for the decider in another 30 years, and he quoted from his book written for the occasion: “One of the great things about cricket is that it brings people together and creates lifelong memories.” Roger Lusted was granted his wish for a new photo – by Barry Taylor - which shows the Billingshurst Old Boys side before taking the field against Snettisham - Back row from left: Steve Message (umpire), David Rood, Francis Ward, Ian Lusted, Tony Petras, Nick Brown, Roger Lusted (scorer). Front row: Mark Elliott, Chris Holmes, Brian Joyce, Barry Taylor, David Sainsbury, John Odell, Ian Poysden.

Darren Gough plays for Saint Lucia at Horsham Cricket Club!

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter A taste of the Caribbean came

to Horsham Cricket Club with the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority event ‘Bat for a Cause’, centred round a very special

inaugural charity cricket match between the Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister’s XI and the British Buccaneers (hotel

partners, travel media and tour operators). The late summer day was hosted by Dominic Fedee, Minister for Tourism, Information, Broadcasting, Culture and the Creative Industries, raising much-needed and greatly appreciated funds for both the St Lucia Diabetes Project UK and the hurricane relief efforts in The Bahamas. The T20 match was played in great spirit, and batting first the British Buccaneers made 139 all out. Then, while participants’ children took to the ground for some impromptu cricket, at the marquee lunch a bat signed by the legendary West Indies super star Brian Lara was auctioned to the strains of a steel band. And, after refreshment, the Prime Minister’s XI took the field with PM Allen Chastanet and Dominic Fedee leading from the front, opening the batting. With broadcaster Jim Rosenthal looking on, former England stalwart Darren Gough – now a regular on TalkSport radio – then notched up a quick 50, having bowled a few overs earlier in the match. Yorkshire remain the only county not to have played

at Horsham’s iconic Cricketfield Road ground, so the presence of the county’s former star all rounder accompanied by his wife and sons was all the more welcome, Darren helping the Prime Minister’s XI to a handsome victory. The day raised £5,000 for the Diabetes charity, going towards the provision of medicines, support for sufferers and staff training, diabetes being frequently encountered in Saint Lucia. And, the organisers of the event were delighted to announce that a further £3,000 was raised for the hurricane relief efforts in The Bahamas. Although Saint Lucia, one of the tropical Windward Islands, is volcanic and heavily forested, cricket is a real passion, with the Beausejour Stadium just outside Rodney Bay used as a World Cup venue for England matches in 2007. And, Saint Lucia – named after St Lucy of Syracuse – is understandably proud that their cricketing hero, all rounder Daren Sammy, went on to captain the West Indies. Donations to the St Lucia Diabetes Project can be made by visiting: https://www.justgiving. com/stlucia-diabetesproject

Dynamic first half ensures another Horsham win

Another win moves BBH up to third Tuesday September 10 Football - Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2 1 Hassocks Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Photo by John Lines Saturday September 14 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Brightlingsea Regent 0 4 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was an excellent result for Horsham against one of their near neighbours in the table, but their furthest opponents - fully rewarding their 215 mile round trip to the Essex coast on the mouth of the River Colne between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea. It was a sunny outcome at the Taydal Stadium, both in terms of the weather and on the pitch, the Hornets playing merciless, clinical football, delivering their third league win of the season in their new, higher league, in which they have quickly found their feet, proving more than worthy competitors. Continuing his outstanding start to the season, Horsham’s Chris

Smith was undisputed Man of the Match with a hat trick, getting the Hornets off to a flying start and immediately stamping Horsham’s authority on the game. The writing was on the wall right from the start when home keeper Charlie Turner had to be at his very best to divert Charlie Harris’ header. Brightlingsea responded with two attacks of their own, but George Bentley in the Horsham goal was up to the challenge. Horsham, though, took an early lead when Smith maximised Kieran Pamment’s cross and it soon got even better when the striker went through again, this time leftfooting Lee Harding’s supply past Turner. Rampant Horsham had the hosts under the cosh, with both Harris and Smith penetrating the defence to test Turner again. Just past the half way mark Brightlingsea might have reduced the deficit, but the opportunity was negated. Then, at the other end free kick guru Harris somehow evaded the

wall to put Horsham further ahead. Again, Brightlingsea responded, but Romario Dunne was twice off target before Horsham enjoyed the break with a 3-0 advantage. A half time pep talk did nothing to motivate Regent, Horsham soon being awarded a promising free kick, but this time Harris did find the wall. Then, Horsham had a golden chance to go four up, but failed from the penalty spot for the third time in succession, Smith notching up his second consecutive miss after Joe Shelley had been fouled in the box. Yet, with another Horsham goal a racing certainty, Smith duly notched up his hat trick by converting Shelley’s supply, referee Abigail Byrne ignoring a Regent official’s all too vigorous offside claim. With the result long since beyond doubt, sub Zack Newton and Jack Brivio combined in an attempt to add Horsham’s fifth, to no avail, but travelling Horsham supporters were naturally delighted with their trip to deepest Essex.

Four goal YMCA delights Manager Buckland Tuesday September 10 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Saltdean United 1 4 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

YMCA enjoyed their trip to the seaside, where they bounced back from the disappointment of exiting the FA Cup with their best result of the season to date after a particularly strong first half performance. At Saltdean United’s Hill Park ground YM were a goal up after just 4 minutes when Dean Carden converted a penalty after a hand ball incident. And, it soon got even better when, just after the quarter of an hour mark, the always enterprising Martin Smith sprung the Saltdean offside trap to race clear and calmly beat home keeper Billy Barker with a precise finish. Then, mid way through the first half, YM

launched another attack, culminating in Tony Nwachukwu skirting a defender to slot home from the edge of the box. And, before half an hour was on the clock, Smith burst through again to send a cross for Matt Daniel to give YM a four goal cushion. Although Saltdean had had the lion’s share of possession, YM were strong on the break, counter attacking with devastating effect and looking capable of scoring every time they got through. The only down side to the first half was an injury to Nwachukwu, necessitating his substitution by Jake Lindsey. Restarting four goals to the good, YM dominated the next 15 minutes, but were unable to convert any of the numerous chances created. As the game wore on the tempo slowed, allowing Harry Shooman to score a consolation goal for the hosts, following which they mounted several forays, hitting the bar with a long-range effort. YM, too opened up further opportunities, but the

score remained 4-1 in their favour at the final whistle. The win moves YM up to 14th in the table and the club were pleased with the contributions made by subs Lindsey, Callum Jeal, James Pearce and Jack Ryder, suggesting that more first team football will be coming to those younger members of the squad. Martin Smith was declared YM Player of the Match, ‘because of his tireless running and menacing of the Saltdean defence, resulting in an excellent solo goal and a direct assist for YM’s fourth.’ YM Manager Peter Buckland said: “A good 4-1 win back on league duty. Our first half was close to perfection, the second was at best mediocre, something that we’ll be addressing at training, but our jigsaw is slowly coming together. We ticked a lot of positive boxes tonight and moved forward as a group.” YM return home this Saturday, welcoming Peacehaven & Telscombe for a league match.

Broadbridge Heath continued their fine league form to earn a hard fought victory over Hassocks in front of another 100 plus crowd at the Countryside Stadium, despite the England game and Horsham being at home nearby in the FA Cup. Scott Weller was missing through injury but Rob Godfrey returned and Ollie Joells joined the squad for the first time since his move from Loxwood in the summer. The first half was fairly even but Heath did come close on a few occasions, notably when Jamie Taylor’s flying Mark Hughes style volley was blocked by James Earl in the visitors’ goal. Home keeper Conor Evento was called upon to block one goal bound shot but it was still scoreless at half time. Heath started the second half well and it was no surprise when, after Hassocks had half cleared an effort from George Cousins and the ball fell for Max Howell, he found the bottom corner from fifteen yards. Unfortunately, not for the

first time this season, Heath having appeared to have taken control, gave away the initiative, Ben Bacon beating Evento to a corner to bring the visitors back into the game. For a few minutes Heath were forced to defend their box with Lee Carney and Josh Tuck making several headed clearances, but they gradually got back on the front foot and when Jamie Robinson broke down the left flank and delivered the kind of cross strikers dream of, Taylor got behind his defender to smash a stunning volley inside the far post to regain the lead, 2-1. Another Taylor effort brought a fine save from Earl as Heath tried to put the game to bed. In the last few minutes Hassocks threw everything forward but Evento was never really tested in the home goal the Bears taking the three points. With Carney returning to the back four Heath looked more solid and Godfrey put in a good 70 minutes, despite having just recovered from illness, before being replaced by Joells making his Bears’ debut. Tim Cook and Cam Watts were also used and with Martyn Flack almost fully restored from injury and Scott Weller and Marlon Maxwell to come back in, manager Steve Painter will be feeling much more confident after the recent cup blips.

BBH unfazed by late Lingfield goals Saturday September 7 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 3 2 Lingfield Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After three consecutive cup matches, two ending disappointingly, Broadbridge Heath returned to league action with a well-earned victory over Lingfield, maintaining the Combination Premier form that has them unbeaten since the first game of the season. With Rob Godfrey unavailable, Alfie Jones moved to right back with Lee Carney joining Josh Tuck in the middle of defence, new signings, Tim Cook and David Solomon joining a very strong bench. The game took a while to settle down with neither side causing many problems for their opposing defences. Heath were trying to get their passing game going but could not get any end product and Lingfield tended to rely on Lorenzo Lewis on the left wing, who got into some good positions without bothering Conor Evento in the home goal. Until, on 32 minutes, the Lingfield keeper was robbed by Jamie Taylor on the byline, the Heath marksman pulling the ball back for skipper Tom Howard-Bold to rifle home the opener. Heath now had momentum and with Max Howell giving his full back a torrid time and George Cousins drifting in from the other flank, they threatened to extend their lead. A Howell cross was almost converted by Scott Weller, and Taylor tried an extravagant volley when through, but blazed wide. Then a George Cousins drive from the edge of the box came back off the post, while at the other end Lewis wriggled through but could not get his shot away, the score remaining 1-0 at the break.

Heath came back out with the clear intention of managing the game to protect their lead, and to attempt to pick off the visitors as they searched for an equaliser. With Lee Carney using all his experience to marshal those around him, Evento in the home goal was rarely called into action. And, just before the hour mark, Heath gained possession, Howard-Bold instantly supplying Cousins on the left, for the ex-Brighton striker to jink his way into the box before intelligently squaring the ball for Taylor to bury Heath’s second goal. Having seen a lot of the ball without creating a chance, Lingfield pushed their big centre half up front and adopted a more direct route. But, when, after 80 minutes Tim Cook, on for Howell, was put clear by Martyn Flack - who had replaced Jones - he took the ball into the area and finished clinically into the bottom corner. Heath seemed home and dry but Lingfield took advantage of the Bears having to reorganise when Weller was forced off by injury, moving Carney out of the back four, and with 5 minutes remaining, Connolly was given time to turn and find the top corner from 12 yards. Then, in the dying moments a quick free kick saw Woods get behind the Heath defence to give a final score line that had not looked likely for the vast majority of the game. Late on, Evento had to make two good takes from crosses, but there were no further goals, leaving Heath 3-2 winners and far better placed than they were at the same stage last season. Broadbridge Heath FC is delighted with the excellent support at the new ground - averaging nearly 200 per game. With three big screens and the bar opening out onto the pitch surround there is a real buzz about the club and community, which the Bears hope will continue to grow.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK Our first half was close to perfection, the second was at best mediocre, something that we’ll be addressing at training

Horsham beat last season’s champions in first home game

Saturday September 14 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 32 22 Beckenham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last season Beckenham were undisputed champions, promoted to London 1 South League

along with Horsham, having been the only side to do the double over Horsham, who went on to finish their campaign with ten straight wins. But, last Saturday Horsham exacted revenge, compounding Beckenham’s sticky start at the new higher level – played 2 lost 2. And, in weather that

would have been welcome in mid season cricket, Horsham began like a train, taking a substantial lead, until a second half wobble threatened defeat, before they regrouped to run out relatively comfortable winners. Horsham opened the scoring with a penalty, ahead of Marcus Condon scampering home from the back of the scrum for the Green and White’s first try, Tom Johnson again kicking accurately. Then, before the mid point of the half, in a superb solo run from the right, Aaron Lindfield shook off an accompanying opponent to crash down under the posts, Johnson’s boot giving Horsham a 17-0 lead. Dream start! Although Beckenham slotted home a penalty, Horsham were in charge and thought that they had increased their score, only to suffer the first of two disallowed tries. But, they did soon have further success, when Declan Nwachukwu made a trademark burst through, again maximised by Johnson. Nwachukwu then made another dash for the line but was pushed

out just short, following which Beckenham missed a long penalty and then managed to keep out another attack, but Horsham led 24-3 at the break. Resuming, Horsham endured their second disappointment when another try would surely have clinched the game. Then, unstoppable sub, James Cleverly, formerly a pro with Saracens, but now a Beckenham coach, thundered across the line, the conversion reducing Horsham’s lead to 14 points. And, Horsham’s advantage was further eroded when, in the 47th minute, Beckenham debutant Will Berry latched onto a fly kick to get over by the right hand flag, the conversion being mercifully hooked wide. Yet, six minutes later Horsham were punished again, with a try from Beckenham skipper Andrew Knowles, the simple close quarter conversion bringing the score to 24-22, and, with Beckenham now in the driving seat, it appeared that they might snatch the game.

However, an excellent solo run by Jordan Bell scythed through the visiting defence, and although the kick went awry, with 15 minutes remaining, Horsham had a 7 point cushion, soon increased to 10 when Johnson converted a penalty almost from the half way line. Another long Horsham penalty then went begging, followed by a second, but Horsham had regained possession and after a dropped ball deprived them of another try, the entertaining game finished 29-22 in Horsham’s favour, Head Coach Nick Stocker telling the District Post: “Overall that was a good performance earning us a bonus point, we started well and it soon almost looked like game over. Then, for quite a period in the second half we kept giving the ball away, letting them back in, but we recovered well to get our first win.” This Saturday Horsham visit the Honourable Artillery Company at their ground in the City of London.

Colette celebrates National Carriage Driving success Carriage Driving Martin Read - Sports Reporter Congratulations to Collyers A level student Colette Holdsworth ! 17 year old Colette has won the National Carriage Driving Advanced Pony Championships in the four day event at Bywell Hall , near Newcastle after only having been carriage driving for four years. Colette’s proud father Rod explains: “When she was younger, Colette did some Pony Club activities with her old pony, Belle – now retired to the field - progressing to carriage driving, competing with Pepper, a 13.2 hands Welsh cross mare. She had visited a carriage driving fair at Merrist Wood Agricultural College, and then went for a lesson with Pippa Bassett, a carriage driving instructor near Capel, and was hooked!” Like Three Day Eventing, Carriage Driving comprises three phases – Dressage, a sequence of set moves to display schooling and obedience in the arena – Marathon, at speed against the clock on a cross country course with obstacles built around natural features, including water and steep banks, designed to stretch both horse and rider, driven in the correct order, the tight turns necessitating judgement and skill – and Cone Driving – testing the prowess and competence of the driver and the suppleness and acquiescence of

the pony, requiring a steady hand, concentration, ice cool nerves and a well-trained animal. Last year Colette represented team GB at the European Youth Carriage Driving Championships in Hungary, winning an individual gold medal. And, it is very much a family show, with Colette’s sister Nicole also part of the GB team with her pony Ken, both of them mucking out and feeding their ponies morning and evening and training every day during the peak season. Colette was also Supreme Champion last year at the Indoor National Indoor Carriage Driving championships. Concentrating on Maths, Further Maths and Physics, Colette plans to go to university in 2020, meanwhile she will continue training with Pepper throughout the winter indoor season ahead of next spring’s start of the new outdoor season and hopes to go on to represent GB as part of the future adult team. Why is carriage driving so special for Colette? She tells the District Post: “I love the bond between horse and driver. There is a lot of trust involved in carriage driving as competing is such a big ask of them. Without a strong connection between horse and driver, the pairing will not be competitively successful. Building this bond with Pepper has been the most enjoyable and rewarding part of

my time in the sport. The carriage driving community are so friendly and encouraging which makes the events feel really special” Colette’s father adds: “Carriage driving is an equine sport that appeals to both young and old and attracts people from all walks of life. What they all have in common is a love of horses”. At the age of 98, the Duke of Edinburgh may have surrendered his driving licence, but

he still loves carriage driving, the sport in which he has participated in and enjoyed for many years, and he has recently been spotted carriage driving around royal estates. For anyone interested in carriage driving, information is available on these websites - http://www.britishcarriagedriving.co.uk/training http://www.indoordriving.co.uk/. The sport is open to all, with taster lessons at local clubs, such

as Brockham Harness Club and Bradbourne Carriage Driving Club. It is not necessary to have your own pony or carriage to have a go, and indoor Sussex/Surrey events and training are held at Merrist Wood Agricultural College and Golden Cross Equestrian Centre, with outdoor events held at venues across the country, including Goodwood Park and Windsor Park.
