Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Organisers Horsham District Council would like to thank all of their partners and sponsors who worked together to make the event happen including; Oddballs Car Club, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Guildford Harley Davidson, Horsham JEEP, Food Rocks and Coden Events, Corvette Club UK, Mid-Surrey Roadsters, Motion Picture Motors, Berkeley Homes, Freeman Brothers, Sussex Thunder AFC, Super Hero Parties, The Almost Elvis Band, Blueprint Blues Brothers, The Rec Rooms, The Crown and all of the musicians and performers, the event traders and food concessions.

Winter is set to be extremely difficult for the NHS across the country, especially on A&E departments and local GP surgeries as they cope with the annual rise in numbers of people seeking treatment. Local doctors believe pressure on health services could be significantly reduced if those eligible take up the opportunity to get their free jab. Allison Cannon, Chief Nurse Officer for East Surrey and Sussex Clinical Commissioning Groups, said: “The flu vaccination is the best protection against flu. It’s safe during any stage in pregnancy, from the first few weeks through to the woman’s due date and doesn’t carry any risks for mother or baby. By getting protected now, you will also help ease pressure on local health services, freeing them up to care for those most in need. “The flu jab is painless and over in seconds – contact your GP or pharmacist to get the flu jab.” For more information visit www. nhs.uk

Pregnant women are being urged to get the free flu vaccination now to protect themselves and their children from getting ill this winter. Last year, less than half pregnant women across Sussex claimed their free flu jab, leaving them vulnerable to catching the flu, which can be dangerous for those at risk of serious health complications, including pregnant women. This is because pregnancy naturally weakens the body’s immune system, which could cause complications for pregnant women, as they are less able to fight off infections, increasing the risk of them and their unborn baby becoming ill. Even for those who have had the flu vaccination before, it’s important to get it again because the type of virus in circulation changes every year, so the vaccine changes too. It is safe for both pregnant and breastfeeding women and actually passes some protection on to babies in the first few months of life.

With 2019 being Horsham’s Year of Culture, it’s been a big year for the creative community in the area. October sees the HAOS group Art Fair at the council offices in Parkside, to be officially opened once again this year by District Post MD Davey Pearson. Over 2,000 art and craft fans attended last year and further details, and free tickets for District Post readers, will be in the paper nearer the time. In the meantime, to preview the Art Fair individual artists in the group have submitted work to a preview event being held in the upstairs gallery of The Capitol

Theatre. There are forty or so nice pieces of work hanging on the walls from the best artists in town and entrance is free. So if you’re going to a movie why not pop along a bit early and have a looksee? Although in fact it’s well worth a special visit. The Horsham Artists Open Studios preview art exhibition is currently on and runs until 27th October. For more details see horshamartistsopenstudios.co.uk

West Grinstead proposal sparks more housing controversy Concerned local residents are being urged to attend a meeting regarding a proposal to erect “possibility of thousands of new homes” in the West Grinstead region, with a poster declaring: “if accepted this {scheme} would change the face of West Grinstead for ever”. Construction of a flyover at the already busy Buck Barn crossroad is said to be under consideration, with, the poster continues, “The whole area from the east of the A24 to the Downs Link and from the north of the A272 to Bar Lane threatened. This area is probably the most beautiful area in the parish with rolling countryside, rivers and streams running through woodland.” Details of the scheme from the Thakeham Group are set to be revealed at a Parish Council meeting at 7.30 pm at Partridge Green Methodist Hall on the forthcoming Wednesday (9th). In a separate development on the outskirts of Horsham, the Thakeham Group has put

in a planning application for 90 new housing units in the field bordered by the railway line between the Boars Head pub and the town. Based in Sumners Place, Stane Street, Billingshurst, The Thakeham Group is described as ‘one of the South East’s leading developers’, stating: “We deliver to consistently high standards in residential development, contract build and land promotion opportunities”, and at the time of the Boars Head proposal, Robert Boughton, MD of Thakeham, said: “Land is pivotal to everything that we do - it enables us to be place makers. At the Thakeham Group we have an opportunity and a duty to create amazing places; we are driven by a passion to deliver a legacy for many to enjoy and that we can be proud of.” Strategic Gaps had been considered sacrosanct, both to limit Horsham’s growth and to preserve its identity, with separation between the town and Crawley and the town and Southwater examples highlight-

ed. But, such buffer zones have been steadily eroded by major developments, giving rise to disquiet and apprehension when still further housing schemes are mooted and unveiled. With its proximity to Gatwick Airport, London and the coast, the relatively crime free Horsham district is an attractive, convenient place to live and Councils are obliged to meet government housing targets, while some of the major landowners are understandably being persuaded to capitalise on their assets. But, with the huge recently completed developments in Broadbridge Heath, Southwater and Faygate and more in train for North Horsham, the former Novartis site, and possibly adjacent to the Boars Head and at the nearby 124 acre Horsham Golf & Fitness site, many feel that Horsham is already doing more than its bit to combat the housing shortage without encroaching further into the district’s outstanding surrounding countryside.

Sustainable Scouting in Horsham: Teaching and listening to our youth

Scouting has always demonstrated a great respect the environment, as laid out in our scouting values. However, West Sussex Scouting is now striving even harder. Horsham District Scouts are bringing together expertise and enthusiasm from across the region and creating a new Sustainability team in a new eco-drive. In partnership with local organ-

isations UK Harvest, West Sussex County Council (WSCC), Healthwatch West Sussex and Horsham Matters, Scouts from across the district are coming together in October at the District Campsite to engage in activities and to learn and lead the way in ensuring scouting continues to have a positive impact in our communities and for the environment. Sal Dartnell, District Commis-

sioner for the 15 Horsham Scout Groups, explained: “Scouting has come such a long way and is as vital now for our young people, in developing Skills For Life, as it ever was. The ‘leave no trace’ mantra needs to move on to ‘leaving the world in a better place’, stewardship to sustainability. The issues of today include overuse of single-use plastics, food production and waste, and water and

energy use, but there are many more. We believe that scouting is (and can play a pivotal role in) influencing the future direction of generations to come. Not only do we need to teach and lead our young people, we need to listen to them, which is why we are excited to set up this new Sustainability Team. “This is going to be a core focus for West Sussex Scouts and for us in Horsham, and so we are launching our inaugural event on October 13th at out [sic] District campsite. Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts, Leaders and Adult Volunteers of all ages from all Scout Groups have been invited to take part in the interactive and practical activities. We aim to engage and influence them to take away positive ideas and attitudes and changes to help impact sustainability in their own Groups” WSCC Waste Prevention Team will run ‘sustainability circuit training’ on the day, which will involve games and activities investigating recycling and waste reduction. UK Harvest, a local food surplus charity and partner, will run an interactive vegetarian cooking session, and older scouts will aim for their outdoor cooking challenge to be ‘zero waste’. Considering wider sustainability issues, Explorer Scouts will be

looking at upcycling and reusing wooden pallets donated by Covers. All participants will also have the opportunity to consider their own health and wellbeing, with Healthwatch West Sussex. Local charity Horsham Matters run will be joining us to raise awareness of the 5 food banks they run in our District and the night shelter. Chris Lofts, West Sussex Scouts Team Lead, said: “We are empowering our young people to be leaders in their communities and networks from a young age, to inspire passion and motivation with knowledge and understanding while offering practical everyday ideas in scouting and at home. We are a youth-shaped team, our Scouts can lead their leaders, question processes, challenge what has become normal and convenient, and explore more environmentally friendly concepts.” The event is set to be a huge success. If you are interested in finding out more or getting involved in scouting in Horsham District or with your local scout group, new volunteers are always welcome and there are roles to suit everyone whatever experience and time you have to give! Please contact Hannah Miller on hmiller@horshamscouts.com to find out more.

Student numbers triple at drama academy’s Horsham branch

Photo by Stephen Candy Photography Ariel Drama Academy is thrilled to announce that (as of January) they will offer their unique service of providing FREE LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams to selected students within their Horsham branch. Having opened in April 2018 with 20 students, Ariel Horsham have tripled their numbers, which is testament to the standard of teaching and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Since opening, they have been involved in various performances around Horsham, including school fetes and, most recently, Sunday Funday in Horsham park, showing the local community what they

do. This has proved invaluable to gaining students and spreading the Ariel ethos. They have created such a community at Ariel Horsham, taking students to see ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie’, ‘Come From Away’ and, most recently, ‘Waitress’ in London’s West End. “The students love these trips and it is so wonderful to see friendships blossom as a result of coming to our Academy” - Principal Ben Simpson. “We are so delighted that the Horsham Academy has been such a massive success, we are so fortunate to have such dedicated tutors, who work so hard to ensure

the quality of the work is of the highest standard. We teach over 780 students across mid Sussex, and pride ourselves in being totally inclusive” - Nicci Hopson Ariel Director. Ariel believes: “Perhaps the most exciting event coming up is our inaugural annual showcase at the New Bury Theatre in Hurstpierpoint, where the students will get to show the public the quality of work they can produce.” Hot off the heals of performing a sell out run of Our House at the Hawth last week, auditions are now open for Bugsy Malone, which will be staged at the Capitol, Horsham next year.

Record number of stalls at Fresher’s 2019

The annual Fresher’s Fair took place at Collyer’s last week. Fresher’s is designed to help wel-

come new and returning students to the college and comprised a record number of different stalls

and activities. The college welcomed a host of organisations, societies, clubs and services from across the region. Rebecca Adams, Head of St Leonard’s House and the college’s Tutorial and Enrichment Officer, co-ordinated the days. She explained: “Fresher’s is a really important event in the college calendar, as it showcases how the college extends its excellent curriculum programme to all students, with the added opportunity to find groups, societies, clubs and events which will enhance their time at Collyer’s. There really is something for everyone and it’s a great opportunity to enable students to meet other like-minded people.” Vice Principal (Student Support), Andrea John, said: “The Fresher’s Fair gives all students the opportunity to become involved in college life and enhance their learning experience whilst at Collyer’s and

In addition, organisations from the wider community, who provide young adults with important support services, also attended as part of a pastoral, safeguarding and well-being focus for young people. Organisations who supported Fresher’s 2019 included: Interact, Find It Out, Springboard Project, West Sussex Sexual Health, Allsorts, Horsham Fire service, Horsham Kickboxing Club, Neighbourhood Watch, West Sussex Library service. Andrea John was delighted: “Huge thanks to the students running societies and organisations from the wider community for their amazing work and support. Kestrel box to help reverse a species in decline Kestrels have a new nest box at Chesworth Farm in Horsham, thanks to UK Power Networks. Electricity linesmen teamed up with Friends of Chesworth Farm to help kestrel numbers recover by donating and installing an electricity pole fitted with a new nest box in Holloway Field. Sarah Singleton, an engineering team leader at UK Power Networks, said: “We will keep our fingers crossed next spring that kestrels start using the new box. The farm is a wildlife haven where local schoolchildren can learn about protecting our wildlife and the countryside. “Our teams spent two days volunteering there, this summer, by installing boxes for dormice, another species in decline. We were then asked if we could help with the kestrel project and, as we have the specialist skills and equipment needed for this work, we were pleased to help.” Tim Thomas, volunteer and conservationist for Friends of Chesworth Farm, said: “We encourage kestrels to use the farm. They visit us regularly and we know they breed locally, but it’s a species of conservation concern throughout the country and they need all the help they can get.

“The box might give them additional opportunities to find safe nesting. There are good food sources around the farm and, at the height of the season, mature crickets in our meadows provide good food for the youngsters. Small rodents also provide an excellent food source all year. “UK Power Networks has worked with us before and they are very practical, which is useful because this project would not be easy for our current volunteer group. The help UK Power Networks is giving us, in donating the pole and using big equipment to put the pole in the field, is wonderful. Having said this, the Friends of Chesworth Farm would always welcome new volunteers to help with the many smaller jobs around the farm.” Chesworth Farm, owned and maintained by Horsham District Council, is close to Horsham town centre and supports a wide variety of wildlife from robins and blackbirds to declining species such as barn owls, kestrels and dormice. MP judges scarecrow competition Shipley School Learning Kitchen official opening at Pulborough Harvest Fair Shipley CE Primary School are Arundel & South Downs MP, Nick Herbert was guest judge for a scarecrow competition at this year’s Pulborough Harvest Fair (28 September). The display of around 50 scarecrows, made by children at St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Pulborough, greeted visitors along the footpaths of the Fair. Mr Herbert chose ‘Trixie the Tremendous’, made by Robyn and Sophie Dewdney, as the best scarecrow. Second prize was awarded to Rex Winters and Rosie Martin for ‘Dumbo’, an elephant scarecrow, and third prize was given to Ella and Lucy Copus for their creation ‘Goldie’. The annual fair on Glebe Fields brought visitors together for local crafts, foods, and activities with a countryside Harvest theme. Profits from the event will support local community groups, with past recipients including the Community Care Transport scheme, the youth club, and The Hub. Mr Herbert said: “I enjoyed my visit to this year’s Fair, which was another great success for the

village. It was fun to judge the scarecrow competition again and I was impressed by the entries.” The Fair’s team of volunteer organisers are looking for more people to help them with the planning and preparations of next year’s event and anyone interested to contact them via their Facebook page: @PulboroughHarvestFair

delighted to unveil their new ‘learning kitchen’. At the official opening of the new food technology facility, the Headteacher and Chair of Friends of Shipley School (FOSS) were joined by Josie Philips, retired Shipley school welfare officer, and Sarah Campbell who kindly donated the kitchen to the school. Two cookers and a fridge freezer were purchased by FOSS through fundraising and help from our local Buck Barn Co-op community donations. Margaret Henderson, a former midday meals supervisor at the school, and Bob Philips, who was the youngest child to arrive at Shipley School during the war as an evacuee from London, also took part in the opening ceremony. Once our VIPs had pulled the ribbon to open the new kitchen, families and villagers celebrated together with tea and cake, sponsored by Buck Barn Co-op and parents. We raised a whopping £127. What an amazing project giving the children an area where they can learn to cook and bake.

Open Evening

Do you, don’t you, will you, won’t you? Research shows that around half of all adults in the country don’t yet have a will – Will Aid in November is the perfect time to put that right at a nominal cost. The charity will‐writing campaign Will Aid is urging people to get their affairs in order and make a will. Many believe their nearest and dearest will automatically inherit but that’s not always the case and failing to do so can cause heartache and sometimes bitter family arguments for those left behind. Indeed, there is a risk that if you fail to make a will your financial wealth and personal chattels could go to people you did not want them to go to,” says Will Aid campaign man-

ager Peter de Vena Franks. “That’s why I can’t emphasise enough the importance of being prepared and making what is already a devastating time for relatives a little less stressful.” Will Aid is recognised as the UK’s most successful charity will‐writing scheme. It has been running for 31 years and inspired more than 300,000 people to prepare their wills whilst raising in excess of £20 million for its charities. The concept is simple ‐ during November each year, participating law firms volunteer their time and expertise without charge to write basic wills, with clients invited to make a voluntary donation to the Will Aid charities instead of paying the

solicitor. The suggested voluntary donation for a basic Will Aid will is £100 for a single will and £180 for a pair of mirror wills and last year more than £1million was raised for ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children and Sightsavers. A number of Sussex solicitors are giving their time to Will Aid, amongst them local family solicitors Mancini Legal who led the charge for fund raising in the Horsham area in 2018. They are currently taking bookings on 01403 337337 or you can visit willaid.org.uk or call 0300 0309 558. Space is limited so you are advised to book early.

Thursday 10 October 2019 5.00—7.00 PM During the evening there will be an opportunity to meet staff, look at work and displays, find out more about the curriculum and extra curricular opportunities, have a tour of the school and hear from the headteacher.

An estimated 87,000 adults in the county are smokers, according to statistics revealed by West Sussex County Council’s Public Health team. Across the county, Adur, Crawley and Worthing have the highest local rates of smoking, while Hor-

sham has the lowest. Stoptober is a national campaign which has so far supported more than 1.9 million people in England on their journey to quit. This year Stoptober is encouraging smokers to ‘split up’ with smoking. It is based on the insight that people are five times more likely to quit for good if they can stop smoking for 28-days. The County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, Amanda Jupp, said: “The evidence shows that people are more likely to stop smoking for good if they have professional support rather

The West Sussex Wellbeing Website has lots of useful advice as well as details of venues that provide support to help people who want to ‘break-up’ with smoking provide support to help people who want to ‘break-up’ with smoking.” To find your nearest GP surgery, pharmacy or wellbeing team offering support to stop smoking, visit www.westsussexwellbeing. org.uk/smokingservices To access a range of free selfserve stop smoking tools, visit the Stoptober website at www.nhs. uk/oneyou/for-your-body/quitsmoking/stoptober

If you’re a guy who waits until something is seriously wrong before going to the doctor, you’re not alone. Local Urological Surgeons, Simon Woodhams and Dan Magrill, open up about Men’s Health. It’s a common problem among men…a reluctance to talk about our health and more specifically, the prostate, penis or bladder. It’s understandable really; problems ‘down there’ don’t exactly make us feel our most masculine and talking about any type of health issue is never easy. But we need to face up to the problems. Mr Woodhams explains “Women are way ahead of us in terms of raising awareness

for their own cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer. Men are lagging behind simply because of a reluctance to talk about these problems. It’s an issue that is getting better. Now, for example, we have ‘Movember’ when men are encouraged to grow a moustache for a month to help highlight male cancers. Movember, not only creates a fun way to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues, it also starts conversations about these issues. But there’s still a fair way to go. The biggest challenge is to not only to get men to spot symptoms, or to see their GP, but to talk about it openly. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.” Mr Magrill continues, “It’s not the easiest thing to talk to your doctor about, but early detection of conditions, along with raising awareness in Men’s Health, is important. It’s understandable why men shy away from issues with their urinary tract, lumps on the testes, erectile dysfunction or prostate but, like most illness or disease, we need to know more about these problems, and although the more we search for them, the more cases we find, it does help us get closer to helping people live longer and improve their quality of life. The earlier we spot symptoms, the greater the chance of finding curative solutions for them. “Symptoms don’t always mean bad news and that [sic] if men visit their doctor early on, they might save themselves a whole lot of worry. Many of the signs that people associate with the prostate can be harmless. For example, problem urinating can be caused by the enlarging of the prostate gland, but that does not necessarily mean cancer. Also, erectile dysfunction can actually have more to do with the heart and can precede heart conditions that may present themselves in a few years time. So, it’s definitely worthwhile being examined to manage, prevent or treat that.” For more information or to book a private appointment, please visit www.westsussexurology.co.uk

It will be good bye to Bedfords Sports – with a big thank you

Business Martin Read The district’s sporting community is sorry to learn that Horsham’s very longstanding and well respected business, Bedford’s Sports will be closing at the end of November, leaving partner Fran Bedford and Man-

ager David Grimes with many fond memories. The Lambs Farm Road shop was established in 1980 by Pete as The Sussex Darts & Trophy Centre, and later developed in to a full blown sports retailer changing name to Bedford’s Sports. The shop transferred to Fran’s control a few years later, priding itself in qual-

ity service and great prices, supplying a comprehensive selection of equipment and clothing brands for a wide range of sports, including darts and snooker, whilst also specialising in engraved trophies, medals and awards. Horsham’s only traditional sports shop has provided kit for many clubs and individuals down the years, as far afield as Eastbourne, Chichester, Brighton and even for Le Mans Racing where the famous Stirling Moss once held aloft a Bedford’s Sports cup, Fran telling the District Post “We’ve really enjoyed being closely involved in the local sporting scene and Bedford’s Sports is still a good, buoyant business, so of course it is a shame that it will be going and we are naturally disappointed, but unfortunately there is nobody in the family wanting to take it on.” Fran, who has been running the shop with David for over 20 years, wants to take well earned retirement. She went on to say: “The pattern of shopping is changing and it is sad that independent family businesses providing a bespoke service – of which there used to be a good number in Horsham – are ceasing. We take this

opportunity to thank everyone who has traded with and supported Bedford’s Sports over the last 40 years, it’s been a very satisfying labour of love for us. Trophy orders either yet to be placed or

We’ve really enjoyed being closely involved in the local sporting scene and Bedford’s Sports is still a good, buoyant business already in the pipeline, will be completed in the usual efficient Bedford’s Sports manner with our large shop display still available to help with your selections”. Meanwhile, club clothing sales have been transferred to Appliedfx where Toni Jeal (Pete’s daughter and formerly with Rof-

fey Robins F.C.) is dealing with all team sport sales - catch her on 01403 280851 or look at the ranges available at www.appliedfx.co.uk. The embroidered clothing and print factory in Blatchford Road goes on with a much larger display, including the new ranges in sublimated clothing, in amazing colours with team generic designs available - a must for clubs wishing to get away from the constant changes and price increases by designer brands. These new ranges include all sponsors, team badges, names and numbers as part of the design, and there are no washing or transfers problems to bother with. Appliedfx has six of the latest computer controlled embroidery machines for clothing and caps and is still more than happy to support the customer who needs small heat printed or larger screen printed orders - if unsure give Toni a call. Until the shop closes there will be even more bargains to be had and Fran and David look forward to welcoming loyal existing customers and new shoppers, too. With many great clearance bargains, all shop stock must go, so grab a deal while you can!

Barry and Debbie bow out with fond memories Business Martin Read Two of Horsham’s best known faces are stepping down from one of the town’s favourite hostelries. Barry and Debbie are leaving The Stout House after just over 20 years at the helm, Barry telling the District Post: “We have a lot of fond memories – we shall miss the people, and take this opportunity to thank our regulars for their custom and support over the years. When we started here King & Barnes were the brewers, and there aren’t many Horsham publicans that go back that far!” Being in the heart of the town, The Stout House often witnesses, and is an integral part of, community events in the Carfax, and as Barry and Debbie have always supported the Royal British Legion they particularly enjoyed having the open air Remembrance

Day service on their doorstep, and especially looking after their Band on Armistice Day. Down the years The Stout House has raised funds for charities, Barry and Debbie being delighted to say that the pub has contributed over £10,000 for Horsham’s Strawford Centre, helping adults with learning disabilities to realise their full potential, Barry explaining: “After working with different independent local charities, we formed a partnership with Strawford and thanks to the generosity of our many friendly customers we are absolutely thrilled with what we’ve been able to donate.” But, Barry adds: “All good things come to an end, and while it’s a wrench to leave The Stout House, it is an all consuming job, not leaving us too much time to do anything else. We both feel that this is the right time for us to move on.” What beckons

now for the couple? Barry says: “Debbie will be keeping her hand in with a job utilising her skills and experience, but she’s kindly letting me retire! We haven’t got any definite plans, so first we’ll be getting our breath back before making any firm decisions. We’ll be staying in the town and I’ll be able to indulge in my passion for sport with some golf and, especially as an MCC member, cricket at Lord’s. I’m still President of Rudgwick Cricket Club, and although I’ve played for them through the decades, including this year, I’ll probably take more of a backstage role there now, but I’m sure I won’t be lacking anything to do!” Barry and Debbie’s last day coincided with another big event in the Carfax – AmeriCARna, ensuring that they signed off in style, before the landlords of the Dragon at Colgate took over.

Ariel Othello’s & Buddies win the Chris Copsey GOLD Award The black-tie gala evening on Friday 13 September at Plumpton Racecourse was organised by More Radio. The Chris Copsey Gold Award is a very special award to celebrate an individual, group or charity who really have made a difference to the lives of others. Chris Copsey was an extremely popular Sussex radio presenter who had lived close to Haywards Heath for many years until his untimely tragic death eight years ago, so it seemed particularly appropriate that we supported this award in his memory. Ariel Drama Academy won the award recognising their work with their special needs students. Ariel believes that drama, song and dance crosses all boundaries and knows no divisions. Ariel’s ethos has always been that the ‘Arts’ should be accessible to all; providing every child with the chance to sing, dance, act and express themselves in a fun and safe environment. Recognising “a clear lack of drama classes for special needs children”, Ariel created their Othellos classes. Making the classes such a success is the fact that students are supported by able-bodied Ariel ‘Buddies’. These volunteers give up their own time every week and form a close bond with the students. Othello students can have a

range of needs from physical problems, such as being wheelchair bound, to conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Asperger’s and Autism. Nicci Hopson: “I felt deeply honoured to receive this award on behalf our my [sic] students and buddies, from what started as small vision of how we could better allow these incredible performers to excel, to what we has [sic] been achieved across the whole of Sussex, feels [sic] me with such pride”. Student Freya’s Mum, Pippa: “The change in confidence in my 11-year-old has been amazing. She has dyspraxia and other health problems including impaired vision; Ariel have not only accepted her as she is, with no fuss, but encouraged her to excel and be proud of who she is. She now has a place she can belong and I am so very grateful for the time and attention the staff have spent with Freya, and her response to this attention has been amazing - a transformation. Freya has been accepted with open arms and I feel this approach is what makes Ariel so special”. Ariels 190 Othellos have gained Railway Line distinctions in exams, performed in productions such as Oliver!, Les Miserables and Bugsy Malone as well as securing work in TV advertising for Sainsburys, BT and Lloyds Bank.

e m i T y t r a P s a m t s i r Ch Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Only seems like Summer was last week - literally. And, as per tradition, here is our annual feature on the best venues to hold your Christmas party this year. Whether it’s for an office do, or a party for friends and family, we have selected a range of our favourite pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels to hopefully give you a wide range of options when you decide to book the best party of the year. If you have been given the responsible task of booking your work’s do, there may be a few things you might want consider... Venue, location, entertainment and cost, are all details you will need to make sure fit with your guest list. Sounds like a daunting task right? Well, don’t despair, here are a few tips from our advertisers, Stevens Drake, on how to organise a Christmas do to remember: Who should you invite? When drawing up the invite list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an effort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason. If staff are encouraged to invite

their partners along, allow for the prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships. Where and when should you hold it? It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to ‘drink and drive’ is clearly inadvisable. So consider whether you have good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do? Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consumption of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff, but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff; make sure that there are plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment? Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up comedian’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about? When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less

inhibited and more likely to say (or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimination and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still required. Oh, and if you are the boss, remember that alcohol and conversions about pay rises don’t mix! The morning after the night before Make sure that people know if

they are required to be in work the day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required. Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’? I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifically to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth considering whether your existing policies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is

expected of people in this context. If not, now is the time to get your house in order. Oh, and make sure you have fun Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your colleagues for their efforts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

Local employers meet job seekers at busy Horsham Jobs and Skills Fair

The fifth Horsham Jobs and Skills Fair once again brought local employers and hundreds of local job seekers together to Horsham’s Drill Hall, on Saturday 28 September, to make the event a great success. Organised by Horsham District Council and supported by Horsham Jobcentre Plus, the Jobs and Skills event was a platform for some 40 employers, training and college organisations, and voluntary groups and charities, from the local area, to attract new employees, apprentices and volunteers. In all, nearly 500 opportunities were available on the day and some 400 visitors took advantage of the wide range of vacancies available.

There were also free employability workshops, provided by the National Careers Service, supporting CV preparation and interview techniques. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke, was impressed with the companies attending: “I am delighted that so many organisations came along to showcase their vacancies and equally that so many local people attended. “The availability of jobs shows that many of our local companies are thriving and performing well in current economic conditions, recruiting for growth, which is a positive sign. “As well as unemployed people

using this event to get back into paid work, the event was also really useful for people seeking a change in career direction and people looking to upskill their talents to improve their job prospects in the future.” Jeremy Quin MP was also in attendance; Once again supporting the event, he has always found it proactive in finding opportunities for local residents. Of the 40 organisations that took part, local company regulars, Metricell, Assurity Consulting and MK Surveys, were once again present, along with newcomers Mountjoy, a construction and property maintenance firm currently working in the District, Global Investment company, Schroders, who have dozens of opportunities available in a new branch in north Horsham, and Creative Technology, one of the world’s leading suppliers of specialist audio visual equipment to the sports, corporate, exhibition and entertainment industries. On 29 February 2020, Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council will, once again, be staging the very successful and popular Apprenticeship Fair in Horsham’s Drill Hall. On Friday 8 November, the popular Q The Music Show is bringing it’s James Bond Concert Spectacular to The Hawth Crawley. Bringing the fabulous and iconic music of James Bond to you in a stunning concert, this show has been a huge success at theatres, with its energetic and exciting performances by some of the UK’s leading musicians. The show will be compered by the lovely Caroline Munro, who played Naomi in The Spy Who Loved Me. Featuring all the songs from the 007 movies, you can hear the greats like Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Skyfall, Thunderball, Live And Let Die, Goldeneye and Licence To Kill amongst others.

Everybody loves James Bond; it is estimated that half the world’s population has seen a Bond film. Countless awards have been lavished upon the series and they have starred some of the best known actors and actresses of all time. These fantastic films would not be complete without a theme tune. When you hear those opening bars of Monty Norman’s main Bond theme you know you’re in for thrills, exotic locations, wonderful gadgets, fast cars and of course those iconic characters who are loved by millions, Miss Moneypenny, M and, of course, Q. The Bond themes are a signature element of the franchise; of course every Spy needs his theme song. Written specifically

to fit the new film and provide that extra helping of movie gold, this unique tradition has featured original performances from legends such as Shirley Bassey, Adele, Nancy Sinatra, Carly Simon, Paul McCartney, Duran Duran, Lulu and Alicia Keys to name but a few. With this in mind, this amazing concert is brought to you by the cream of top musicians, plucked from leading orchestras and West End shows, gathering to perform all the Bond Themes. The orchestral sound is topped off by the stunning vocals of Kerry Schultz. Whether you’re a James Bond fanatic or just a concert fan, this show has something for everyone; outstanding songs, extraordinarily talented musicians, powerful vocals and

top entertainment. Q The Music Show is an award winning Tribute band - in the National Entertainment Awards 2013, both the band and Kerry won awards, Best UK Tribute Band & Best UK Female Vocalist. In 2019, the show made its debut on the West End, selling out the Adelphi Theatre and receiving critical acclaim in The Times. The show will also be appearing at Piz Gloria in the Swiss Alps, as part of the fan celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The event will be attended by George Lazenby. Performance: Friday 8 November 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £26.50, available fromThe Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk

Americana comes to The Hawth Theatre This season, three artists from across the Atlantic will be stepping out onto the Studio stage to entertain fans of Americana at The Hawth. Californian country singer-songwriter, Alice Wallace conjures up the atmospheric sound of the Golden State’s canyons and deserts, mountains and waves, its crowning beauty and its tragic losses, on Wednesday 9 October as she tells her own and others’ stories in The Hawth Studio. Winner of the 2017 Female Vocalist of the Year at the California Country Awards and the previous year’s Best Country/ Americana Artist at the L.A. Music Critic Awards, Wallace uses an intoxicating array of vocal styles to bring her songs to life: a dusky alto, gospel-tinged belting and a soaring soprano. Southern soul, Americana, gospel and blues - Mississippi native Lisa

Mills takes the best of each these genres and utterly transforms them. By taking all those ingredients and adding the occasional dollop of jazz inflection, Mills will be serving up her own savourysweet mix in The Hawth Studio on Wednesday 13 November. On Friday 17 January, Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters return, following their sell out performance in 2017. Lyrically driven, the songs blend the band’s old-school country roots attitude with their shared influences of rock and folk. Based in Asheville, North Carolina, Amanda is a storyteller by nature. With her incredible band backing her on pedal steel and guitar, bass, and drums, this promises to be an evening not to be missed. Tickets, priced £16 for each concert, are available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk

Stone Shiva featuring Jason Falloon comes to The Rec Rooms this month Shiva the Destroyer?, perhaps, but he’s also the supreme being who creates, protects and transforms the universe. (thank you, Wikipedia!) Is Stone Shiva, a new musical project from local legend Jason Falloon, any or all of these things? Comprising a trio of formidable talent, and initially instigated by the chance meeting with drummer John Coombes, with whom Jason appeared on the same bill in March of this year, the seeds were sown for a bold and ambitious new endeavour of a rock (Stone?) band concentrating on original material, that will grow and develop organically, and as Jason is wont to say “let’s see what happens”. John was an early starter; pub gig debut at 13 and a tour of Holland at 16, back in Ol’ Blighty he soon found a regular gig with Rhythm Method, playing original numbers and then going on to further enhance his repertoire in the blues rock covers band Spittin’ Feathers. Following the demise of the Feathers a new band was formed from their ashes, with a harder R n B sound in the vein of Dr Feelgood and Nine Below Zero. Once again featuring original songs, the Voodoo Sheiks cut a formidable swathe through the southern blues scene, cutting 2 albums and playing such esteemed venues as the 100 Club and Camden Underworld. Joining John to complete the Stone Shiva rhythm section and low-end anchor is none other than Jason’s brother Bob, who

will bring new ingredients, sounds and perspectives to the Stone Shiva dynamic. An academic and alumni of the prestigious Leeds College of Music, during his time there he became an accomplished classical and jazz guitarist. After graduation Bob moved to France and cut his teeth in the extremely tough school of the Parisienne Jazz and Blues clubs, and also spent some time playing in Amsterdam. On returning to the UK Bob picked up the bass and joined Jason and Papa Falloon, forming the legendary folk, blues and country phenomenon The Falloons, whose legacy in Horsham and the South more than speaks for itself. He also demonstrated that he was no slouch as a full on rock player too, wielding formidable bass chops in Jason’s power trio Renegade. Following Papa’s “retirement” and Jason’s departure to Germany, Bob has concentrated on the slightly more serene occupation of teaching, not only at home but also as a well respected tutor at The Windlesham School in Washington. However, it seems you can’t keep an ol’ renegade down (see what I did there!), and he’ll be swinging that bass again, bringing stones to the Stone! Having known Jason since primary school, this scribe was more surprised than most when he said he’d got a new band together. Since returning from a 17-year residence in Germany, where he achieved some success

as the Jason Falloon Band, he’s concentrated on setting up and running his studio near Cranleigh for the last 4 years. Offering not only guitar session work over the internet, he has honed his skills in demo production, mixing and sequencing, providing invaluable and affordable services beyond the pockets of many would-be musicians and songwriters. A band hadn’t really been on the radar. But I suspect the main appeal of this burgeoning new project was the natural way it developed, happening upon a like-minded and committed drummer AND having a uniquely talented brother to throw into the mix, rather than going through the sometimes sterile, always gruelling production-line process of auditioning. And let’s not beat around the bush, this is serious stuff; a new band from Queen’s Roger Taylor’s go-to guitarist for his solo projects, someone who’s shared the stage with Ronnie Wood, Nick Mason, Mike Rutherford and Roger Daltrey (Could someone get a dustpan and brush so I can sweep up those names please?), a guy with his musical roots and heritage in Horsham itself; serious and very exciting! So, back to Shiva and the name, Stone Shiva: Creativity - check; Changing the universe - possibly; Destroying - I certainly hope so! Neil Oliver: The story of the British Isles in 100 places Due to overwhelming demand, Neil Oliver, archaeologist, historian, author and presenter of the TV series Coast, has added 29 dates for Autumn 2019 to his hugely successful theatre tour The Story Of The British Isles in 100 Places. Neil who will be sharing his love of Great Briain and Ireland with audiences on this leg of the tour – first took to the stage in 2018 with a 38-date tour which coincided with the publication of his book of the same name. Neil was appointed as President of the National Trust in Scotland in 2017 and is also known for his television series A History of Scotland and Vikings. Whilst filming Coast Neil “fell in love all over again with the British Isles. From north to south, east to west it cradles astonishing beauty. The human story here is a million years old and counting.” Oliver comments. Born in Renfrewshire in Scotland Neil Oliver studied Archaeology at the University of Glasgow and freelanced as an archaeologist before training as a journalist. In 2002 he made his television debut with BBC Two’s Two Men in a Trench which featured Oliver and

his close friend Tony Pollard visiting historic British battlefields. Since that time he has been a regular on our screens. Discussing the tour, Neil commented: “Everything makes more sense when you study history. The more history you read, the less judgemental you become. All the things that are happening now have happened before. Countries reach a high point, and then they go through low points. That’s all explained by history. Like everyone else, politicians can have a better understanding of what’s happening by appreciating that there are patterns in history.” The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places will give audiences the opportunity to share Oliver’s enthusiasm and unique perspective of British and Irish history. In his amusing and entertaining way Neil Oliver will explain what it all means to him and

why we need to cherish and celebrate our wonderful countries. Performance: Monday 11 November 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £26.50, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 or online: www. hawth. co.uk

Horsham’s Tom Clark makes Sussex debut ! Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter 18 year old Horsham all rounder Tom Clark was thrilled with his call up to the Sussex County Championship side against Worcestershire at Hove in the final match of the season. A county debut is a big moment for any young cricketer hoping to carve out a career in the game, yet, despite his age Tom is already seasoned in Sussex representative cricket, having scored a hundred for them as a nine year old, making him what is thought to be the county’s youngest centurian. He captained the county’s U15 side to win the ECB Royal London Cup, joined the Sussex Academy – one of the youngest players to do so - and went with them to Cape Town, where he started strongly with a Man of the Match award. More recently, Ardingly educated, tall left hand bat Tom has been playing for Sussex 2nd XI – and for Horsham whenever his other commitments permit, after scoring a big unbeaten hundred opening for the town side in the Sussex Premier League when he was 16. And, this season Tom was selected for the England U19s to play in the Tri Series against India and

Bangladesh, in addition to his batting he is a fine fielder and a more than useful medium pace bowler. Against Worcester he came in at number 7 to be greeted with a bouncer, bad light then taking the players off. Play did not restart until well into the next day, resulting in a long wait to resume his innings, but, back at the crease Tom looked impressive, pulling a short pitched ball to the square leg boundary, before punching a delivery from highly experienced South African international Wayne Parnell

through the covers for four. He batted for three quarters of an hour before Parnell eventually took his revenge. The weather severely curtailed the game and the conditions did not make for the easiest of debuts, but Tom enjoyed the experience and was pleased to be playing with two other home grown Horsham players – Will Beer and Tom Haines. George Garton’s presence in the Sussex side meant that four Horsham players were in the line up against Worcester - had Jofra Archer also played, it would have been five! Although Horsham have had a most difficult season, the Club’s ability to produce another player for the county remains undimmed, proud Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall telling the District Post: “It’s fantastic to see another of our Horsham boys making the big time!” Sussex’s top order has been struggling this season, so a place there beckons for somebody. Horsham is very much a family club for the Clarks – older brother Ed play’s and is the Club’s Cricket Manager, Joe also features in Horsham teams, Ollie is keen, but avoids whites, while their mother, Polly, works tirelessly in the Club office.

Local children earn 37 World & European medals a truly massive accolade on top of recently winning 1st place as a team for the most medals and most submissions, the age ranges of our medallists stretching from our young five year old starters to our much more experienced 15 year olds.” The modern, friendly Horsham Martial Arts Academy teaches traditional skills enhancing self defence, while enabling their young participants to develop and enjoy outstanding success in a fun environment. The main focus is grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but classes in Thai Boxing, Boxing, Judo and Kick Boxing are also offered under the supervision of BJJ Black Belt Head Coach Sonny Weston (07598 335252). Head Coach Sonny Weston told the District Post: “I have just taken a mixed group of nine children to the World Championships - I’ve been teaching them Brazilian jiu-jitsu and our kids fought their counterparts from all over the world, with some as young as 5 years old, and we

walked away with an incredible 7 World Champions, 7 runners up medals and 4 bronzes – a staggering 18 medals from 9 kids. This is a massive achievement as BJJ is a really tough sport and the kids deserve to be really proud with what they’ve achieved !” Not content with that, Sonny then took the Academy’s mixed junior Brazilian jujitsu team to the European Championships, where they won an astonishing 19 medals between the Club’s 11 competitors, that is 12 Golds, 6 Silvers and 1 Bronze, Sonny continuing: “So, some of our Horsham children are now double World and European champions,

Six tries deliver impressive Horsham hat trick of wins Saturday September 28 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 36 26 Cobham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Defying the challenge of moving up a league, Horsham’s third win on the bounce was only marred by a serious blow to one of the senior players. Finn Hillicks opened the scoring for Horsham with an early try, converted by Joe Wilde against the wind, and Horsham went further ahead mid way through the half when Jonny Goward picked up through the ruck to give Horsham a 12-nil lead after an unsuccessful kick. Penalties were then conceded, allowing Cobham to get over the try line, leaving the score 12-5 at the break. On resumption, a progressive Horsham build up moved the ball to Christian Squire to finish well for Horsham’s third try, the visitors, though, responded with a grab and go try of their own, which, on conversion, reduced Horsham’s advantage to five points, whereupon Johnny Whiting came on to replace Jack Osgood in what turned out to be an ill-fated and short-lived substitution. Horsham promptly missed a penalty, but made amends when Mike Watts inserted unstoppable Declan Nwachukwu for another try, which, with Wilde’s conversion, increased the home advantage to 12 points. There, was then an extended stoppage while Jonny Whiting received attention after sustaining a broken leg, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker praising Cobham for supporting the

Horsham physio with pain relief, gas and air pending the arrival of the ambulance. A converted try then saw Cobham reduce the deficit to five points, a margin made more uncomfortable when a penalty went begging. However, Horsham regained superiority with Hillicks’ second try, under the posts, making conversion a formality and when Watts stole the ball to supply Ciaran Preston for his debut try Horsham had a 17 point lead with just two minutes remaining. Cobham did find time to post a try out wide, but although this was well converted, the game ended 36-26 in Horsham’s favour, Nick Stocker saying: “A pleasing win, again with a bonus point, against a team with solid London 1 pedigree, scoring six tries in the process. In tricky conditions because of the wind, our lineout functioned well and our scrum was immense, disrupting Cobham’s ball. We pressurised Cobham into mistakes and created multiple opportunities, which on the whole we took. There is still much more to come and its pleasing to see how the boys are adapting to life in London 1, but we sadly suffered a serious injury to Jonny Whiting and wish him a speedy recovery. Again we saw a number of good performances, with a very good debut from Frankie Smith, and young Josh Sudder showed his potential, too, but our Man of the Match was Christian Squire, who was busy throughout, he set up one try, defended aggressively and took his own try excellently. On Saturday we have another big test, with a trip to Rochester, renewing an old acquaintance against Medway, one of the league’s contenders.”

Barns Green Half Marathon Day & 10K another big success

Barns Green Half Marathon Sunday September 29 Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Sunday’s Barns Green Half Marathon – the 37th - and the 10K race again attracted another huge field of runners, from across Sussex and far beyond, a large crowd attending the muchsavoured community event, despite it being deserted by the traditional lovely weather. Again, ‘The Village with a Heart’ was alive with music – six bands playing, accompanying the food and fund raising stalls. Mercifully, the threatened rain kept off during the races, and after warm ups provided by BluecoatSports the half Marathon was started by Harry Anderson, Principal of nearby Muntham

House School, through whose grounds every race has run from the 1982 inauguration. After a timely, spectacular fly past of two large flocks of geese from the neighbouring Sumners Ponds, the cavalry charge of runners headed off, with Paul Navesey leading at the half way stage before sailing home, mud-splattered but looking remarkably fresh in a highly respectable, 1 hour 8 minutes and 25 seconds amid fun runners, including Spider Man and a lady pirate, completing the half way stage. Paul, third in last year’s 10K race, told the District Post: “It was undulating, just like where I train around Burgess Hill, but it was great fun!” Rachel Hillman from Eastbourne repeated her feat of becoming the first lady home - in 1.23.51 - saying: “This is my

second run at Barns Green – last year I vowed to return to defend my title and I’m delighted to have done that, beating my previous time!” The 10K race was started by former Race Secretary, Sue Parillon, Vernon Jennings saying: “We’ve been watching the forecasts for the last week and despite it being so wet of late we’ve got more than 2,000 runners over the two races, with the biggest ever field in this year’s fourth running of the 10K.” Romping home to the strains of The Featherstone Jazzmen playing “When You’re Smiling”, 2016 Half Marathon winner Max Dumbrell led home the men in 31 minutes 59 seconds, telling us: “Being a local runner, its great to win here again, the cooler conditions were good for running and this

was ideal training for my winter schedule of longer cross country runs.” Crawley Athletic Club’s Kat Owens won the ladies’ prize, competing in 38.41, saying: “It was very windy at Christ’s Hospital, but otherwise it was excellent preparation for my marathon training and I hope to be back here again next year!” Thanks to the generosity of the runners and supporters, last year the races raised £18,000 for the wonderful local St Catherine’s Hospice and the organisers are hoping to donate even more this year. Vernon Jennings summed up saying: “We also always welcome the opportunity to provide support to the various local and junior organisations, societies and clubs that help us organise the

event on the day. The day cannot survive without the huge contribution of our army of marshals and volunteers, they are magnificent – and I thank them all, along with the residents who put up with the road closures.” While committee member Nigel Currie added: “Work on the event goes on all year and it is important that we start attracting entries for next year’s races now, so please make a diary note – the 2020 races will be on Sunday 27th September and you can apply now! Please go to www.barnsgreenhalfmarathon. org.uk” The runners and their friends and families were once again unanimous in describing the Barns Green’s races with plaudits, such as: “Fantastic, well organised, with beautiful views and lovely support!”

services of Gee Humphreys, soft tissue damage to an ankle preventing her appearance, while seasoned regular Sam Stares is growing a family, and last year’s overseas player, South African International Isabella da Rocha was lined up for Barnes against Horsham, but former Captain Gill Adams has returned. The game was played in the new format of two seventeen and a half minute quarters in each half. Both sides had first half

opportunities, but a successful Barnes penalty was the sole goal up to the half time break, despite Louisa Campbell having two excellent shots at goal, one of which being described by an umpire as “worthy of an England strike” – but it was thwarted when a late launch of the keeper’s hand somehow kept the ball out. Soon after the restart Barnes had possession but their short corner was safely averted, a Horsham attack lacking finishing at the other end, before the visitors doubled their lead with a soft goal from an innocuous looking foray. Horsham responded, but a cross to Rosie Firth just avoided finalisation. Then, following more Horsham pressure, they earned a short corner, but were unable to convert. After a Barnes short was also negated, Horsham instigated an attack, followed by another short, Louisa Campbell reducing the deficit. Horsham were now in the ascendance, but time ran out just when a draw looked likely with enhanced finishing power. This Saturday Horsham Ladies remain at home to play Chelmsford at Broadbridge Heath, with a 14.00 push back. Chelmsford lost 3-1 to Bromley & Beckenham last week.

but waves of Wimbledon attacks scythed through, with the Horsham keeper finding himself totally exposed in one on ones against ruthless opponents. The floodgates opened with several of the ensuing goals resulting from rebound shots from uncleared reaction saves. To their great credit, Horsham attacked when they could, but three late short corners came to nothing, a firm strike from Neave being negated in the closing stages. Horsham had a 13 man squad, whereas Wimbledon came with 16 play-

ers, enabling them to keep their playing unit continuously fresh, and being quick on the break they were able to take advantage when Horsham gave away the ball. New Horsham Coach, Andy Blood, acknowledged Wimbledon’s strength, pointing out that the geographical reorganisation of the league had resulted in Horsham being pitted against a side that might otherwise be playing in a different league. On Saturday Horsham Men visit Epsom, who lost 4-0 to Canterbury last weekend.

Heath slip to back to back defeat Saturday September 28 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 3 Eastbourne United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After dominating the first half Broadbridge Heath had plenty of subsequent possession but did not create too many real chances, and were disappointed to slump to their third defeat of the season, slipping to 9th in the table having recently been third. In windy conditions Heath keeper Alfie Hadfield ran out to negate an Eastbourne foray before Andy Waddingham was just unable to maximise a midfield cross at the other end. Waddingham and George Cousins then combined, but the attack ran out of steam, Waddingham, though, continued to harry the visitors’ defence, a long range effort going well wide. Jamie Robinson then broke through down the left flank, followed by Cousins finding Tom HowardBold, whose header was off target. A Heath corner came and went and, after a long solo run, Bold supplied Tim Cook, but the ball was cleared off the line with Eastbourne keeper Jordan Hawkin out of position. Another Heath corner came to

nothing, and Eastbourne broke away, Hadfield saving with his feet, further unfulfilled chances at either end leaving the first half goal-less. Heath survived two early second half scares – right from the off a speculative long, dipping punt challenged Hadfield who did well to push it over the bar and then save the corner with his feet. But, Eastbourne soon had the ball in the net, Sam Schaaf slotting home after a swirling ball had rebounded off the post. Heath, though, immediately equalised with a Cousins penalty, Waddingham having been upended in the box. However, Eastbourne retook the lead when Nathan Crabb broke through to fire past the advancing Hadfield. Then, Heath conceded again, Kane Penn beating the onrushing Hadfield, four goals having come in a quarter of an hour. Heath pressed hard to get something out of the game, Rob Godfrey instigating a wave of attacks, Heath earning a corner. A Waddingham curler then evaded the far post, ahead of Bold’s free kick being pushed over. Next came two more unrequited corners and Cousins blasting the ball into a neighbouring garden from close range. Eastbourne had fewer chances, but their opportunist finishing secured them the points.

Horsham go third with Overwhelmed by clinical Wimbledon Hertfordshire win Saturday October 28 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1 10 Wimbledon 2nds Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Depleted Horsham’s men were on the wrong end of a severe examination in their first game of the season last Saturday. Wimbledon is a big club and a tough encounter was anticipated, yet Horsham opened the scoring soon after the push back, when the unmarked Peter Neave fired in from close quarters. Wimbledon, though, soon equalised with a scrambled goal. Then, Horsham were put under pressure, the visitors earning five short corners in quick succession, scoring twice despite some excellent preventative action by Richard Hancock in the Horsham goal. Freddie Campbell and Joey Humphreys then combined in a rare Horsham attack, which went unconverted, the first half ending with the tall Wimbledon side finding the net again to lead 4-1 at the break. Within five minutes of the restart, Wimbledon had added two more goals and what followed was not Hancock’s most enjoyable half hour – he put in a superb performance and pulled off many excellent, brave saves,

Saturday September 28 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Cheshunt 0 1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham bounced back from their disappointing FA Cup defeat against Dartford by bringing back all three points from their visit to Cheshunt, who shot themselves in the foot by donating an own goal and having two players sent off for serial offending. Like Horsham, the Hertfordshire side, were promoted after play offs last season, but, unlike Horsham, Cheshunt are struggling, whereas the win moves Horsham up to a highly commendable third in the table. At Theobalds Lane, Horsham keeper George Bentley had to be alert to deflect Henry Landers’ early strike. Then, on the 20 minute mark, lively Zack Newton sailed down the flank to cross, but the move ended with a Cheshunt clearance. A foul on Chris Smith by Mark Hughes culminated with the striker ballooning over following Charlie Harris’ free kick. Next, Smith tested home goalkeeper Harry Girling, who

conceded an unrewarded corner, before Smith was denied by a goal line block, when looking certain to score. And, with half time beckoning, Horsham missed out again, when on the rebound from Newton’s rebuff, Smith was too aerial. Re-starting goal-less the second half began quietly, until, just past the quarter of an hour mark, Horsham benefitted from some Cheshunt generosity, Ibrahim Diallo putting the ball in the net as Horsham applied pressure. Then, the carping Hughes was ordered off after an altercation with the ref, but the game continued without any apparent affect. And, after a Horsham corner had come and gone, Cheshunt were reduced to nine men when their other persistent offender, Mo Camara, was shown a red card. The game ended after Bentley had no difficulty in gathering Akinyemi’s attempt, ahead of Kieron Pamment extracting a telling save from Girling. Although the encounter might have lacked much memorable action, points count and Horsham were delighted to notch up their fifth league win of the season from eight starts.

Dramatic late goals move Horsham up to second Tuesday October 1 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Corinthian-Casuals 1 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The fortunes of the two teams could not be more different this season, with Horsham flying high after promotion and historic, but winless Corinthian-Casuals in the basement. Yet, at Tolworth it took persistent late effort from Horsham to overturn Casuals after they had led from the quarter of an hour mark. In lashing rain Casuals took advantage with their first opportunity, when Coskun Ekim’s twisting set piece found the goal. With the weather mitigating against quality football, making accurate passing extremely difficult, Harvey Sparks did manage to penetrate the Casuals defence just before half time, only for his cross to be negated by Emmanuel Agboola in the home goal, leaving the Hornets trailing 1-0 at the interval. Horsham resumed with positiv-

Heath’s eight goal blast fells Mile Oak Tuesday October 1 – Sussex Senior Challenge Cup – Round 1 Broadbridge Heath 8 1 Mile Oak Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Until Tuesday night Mile Oak had been enjoying a successful season, being unbeaten in SCFL Division 1, the league below Broadbridge Heath. But, Heath immediately stamped their authority on this game with two goals in the opening ten minutes, and although Mile Oak reduced the deficit, merciless Heath countered by launching wave after wave of productive attacks. George Cousins opened the scoring after bursting through on his own. Jamie Robinson and Lee Carney then came within range, only for both to shoot wide. But, another goal soon followed, Cousins lobbing visiting keeper Lewis Shepherd. Max Howell and skipper Tom Howard-Bold then harried the Mile Oak defence without reward and Cousins fired wide, until, mid way through the first half in a rare Mile Oak foray Adam Dine fortuitously sailed a high ball over Alfie Hadfield’s head into the Heath goal. This was though, a temporary, minor inconvenience, Heath promptly wresting back control, earning three corners in quick succession, before, on the half hour mark,

Cousins was on hand to complete his hat trick. Heath might have added to their tally, but for some brave work by Shepherd, yet at 3-1 adrift Mile Oak had much ground to make up in the second half. The drenching rain on resumption did nothing to dampen Heath’s spirits and when Rob Godfrey crossed the ball to Renato Carvalho he made no mistake, and within two minutes the striker scored again, maximising Max Howell’s supply. With the luxury of being able to ring the changes to prevent addition to the growing injury list, Jake Hull was brought on for Heath and immediately completed his first senior goal. Not to be outdone, Bold then added his name on the score sheet, and, just after Heath’s ninth corner of the match, another sub, Alfie Jones, compounded Mile Oaks’ misery, Heath notching up their biggest win for some time – 8-1. On Saturday Broadbridge Heath revert to league action, travelling to the Birchwood Ground at the Shooting Field to play Steyning Town. Meanwhile, despite heavy rain throughout the day and in driving pulses during the game, Heath’s well drained new pitch sailed through in pristine condition.

ity, but Agboola maintained a clean sheet, first in a goal mouth melee and then when he was called on to deflect a Zack Newton volley. Then, with Horsham pressing for parity, Charlie Harris went aerial with a free kick before Hornets’ goalkeeper George Bentley had to keep out a strong attempt from Shaun Okojie. Time was evaporating fast and Casuals were defending with spirit, but Horsham were not to be denied, and eventually – with just three minutes of normal time remaining - their pressure paid dividends, albeit slightly fortuitously with the equaliser, when seasonal debutant Jack Brivio benefitted from a kindly rebound to beat Agboola at the second attempt. Then, Horsham broke the Casuals hearts when Harris’ corner reached Joe Shelley, whose header was latched onto by Kieran Lavery for Horsham to grab all three points in the dying moments. On Saturday Horsham return home to welcome fellow contenders AFC Hornchurch before they play Carshalton Athletic, again at The Camping World Community Stadium, on Tuesday 8th

YMCA on comeback trail after good win at Uckfield Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Saturday September 21 - Peacehaven & Telescombe 3 1 Horsham YMCA Tuesday September 24 – AFC Uckfield 1 2 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After two successive defeats, Horsham YMCA were delighted to return to winning ways against Uckfield at the Oaks. Three days before, against Peacehaven & Telescombe YM had held the hosts for much of the first half, only to trail 1-0 at the break, Michael Lloyd scoring in the 34th minute. Tyler Capon doubled Peacehaven’s lead just before the mid point of the second half, but Luke Gedling reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining. Yet, any thoughts YM may have had of sharing the points were quashed when Capon added his second well into extra time, Peacehaven winning 3-1. In the Uckfield match, YM took the lead in the fifth minute, through an excellent finish from Matt Daniel, shooting accurately

into the bottom corner of the goal after being set up by Lewis Taylor. But, the advantage was short-lived, AFC equalising with a close-range shot, the sides going into the break 1-1. As the match progressed, the home side carried the game to YM, usually via their dangerous wide

man Bailo Camara, but the YM were able counter with a regular series of well-worked counter attacks, and in the 84th minute, a YM break away allowed Matt Daniel to latch onto a YM back heal in the penalty area to slot home the winner.

Jack Ryder was nominated YMCA Player of the Match ‘a tireless performance from the young striker causing Uckfield problems throughout the entire match.’ YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “This was a credible performance from YM tonight in a tough away fixture. I had to move quickly over the weekend when the injury curse deepened with the loss of Dean Lovegrove with a groin problem, so I signed experienced midfielder Lewis Taylor on loan from Dorking Wanderers . Uckfield are a big physically powerful team, pounding our box with long balls. We restricted them to few chances on target, and our whole squad was superb, the pass and move from YM proved to be Uckfield’s undoing, with two goals from Matt Daniel, which could and should have been added to. We had five 18-year olds on the pitch tonight, and they all did exceptionally well, the only downside being yet another injury, this time to young left back Ash Wadhams. He had to come off at half time with ongoing ankle problems. This result has given us a massive lift for the Eastbourne game.”
