New five-level multi-storey car park has 516 spaces, 189 more than previously

Michelin Star Awarded to First Vineyard Restaurant Page 9 Entertainment Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 interview with Julia Donaldson CBE Page 11 Horsham District Council was delighted to announce the opening of its new Horsham Town Centre car park at Piries Place on Wednesday 9 October. The new five-level multi-storey car park is larger than the previous car park and has 516 spaces, 189 more than previously, which have both wider and deeper bays than before. There are 12 disability bays, 11 parent and child

bays and eight electric vehicle charging bays. New toilets and a full Changing Places facility are also new features. The 14.5 metre high “living wall” is the car park’s most iconic feature. The design is based upon the form of a tree and reflects the tree designs in the metal screens along the sides of the car park. The plants living on the wall will

increase biodiversity in the area acting as a place for insects and wildlife to live. They will also provide several environmental benefits including the absorption and capture of air pollution, particulate matter and carbon dioxide. The new car park is positioned alongside Horsham’s recently completed multi- million pound Piries Place redevelopment which has transformed the area. Piries Place is now a vibrant and important town centre location for both day time and evening visitors. The regeneration has created a high quality shopping and leisure offer for residents, visitors and businesses which enhances the existing town centre with the development of a new three screen Everyman cinema, a 92-bed Premier Inn hotel and a range of new restaurant and retail outlets. As parking demand is set to grow in the town centre in the coming years, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am delighted that we are now in a position to accommodate future parking demand with the

opening of this new larger and more modern car park. “This considerable investment by the Council is great news for the town centre on many fronts. “Improving the overall motorist experience was at the centre of the decision to refurbish the existing car park and this new parking facility greatly enhances both access and overall usability for everyone. “We fully expect that the opening of the car park will give a real boost for local businesses, particularly those in the Piries Place and East Street areas and we thank local traders and shoppers for bearing with us during the construction phase of the car park. “We are also committed to making Horsham a clean, green, sustainable and successful town. The “living wall” is an exciting way to make our public spaces more attractive whilst at the same time having a beneficial effect on the environment. Investing in greening projects like this will play an important part in safeguarding our local environment for future generations.”

ples Forum (HDOPF) is pleased to announce that it will be hosting (courtesy of and supported by Horsham District Council) their highly popular annual ‘MP Question Time’ event for local older people this November. Martin Bruton, Chairman of the Forum said: “The Horsham District Older Peoples Forum originally started this meeting of local older people with a local MP in 2016 with Jeremy Quin MP, which proved to be so well attended, informative, candid, interesting and enjoyable it is now being held annually.” The HDOPF ‘MP Question Time’ is a genuine opportunity for the local older community from across the Horsham District, to meet a local MP, put questions, raise issues and listen to an MP’s views. ‘Getting it from the horse’s mouth’ and ‘face to face’ rather than from the news or social media. This November, MP Question Time will be with the Rt. Hon. Nick Herbert, MP for Arundel & the South Downs. The meeting is for older people aged 60+ living in the Horsham District or those who care for

someone who is, or those involved with or who care about the issues faced by older people. The event is also open to anyone who is involved with the challenges and issues faced by older people in the Horsham District, including our local neighbourhood, parish, district and county councillors. The event is free to attend and will be held between 10.30 am and 1 pm on Friday 22 November 2019 at the Council Offices, ground floor conference room, Parkside, Chart Way, Horsham. Doors open at 10 am for free tea & coffee. If you would like to attend, the Forum would just ask that you book your place (for catering and as space may have to be limited) via email to hdopforum@gmail.com If you have a question that you would like to ask Nick Herbert MP, (even if you can’t attend the meeting), email that to the Forum before the event please, so that a fair range of questions can be put forward and, if research is needed, Mr Herbert will have the answer on the day.

Good causes reap the benefit from first Horsham District Community Lottery draw

DRIVING PRICES DOWN

BIKE MOTs The new community lottery for the Horsham District got off to a flying start this week with over 660 supporters signed up and 1200 tickets bought in time for the inaugural prize draw. Tickets are priced at £1 each, with 60p in each pound going to support local good causes. Thanks to this level of interest, organisers believe the lottery will raise “at least £39,000 for good causes over the first year”. There were 24 winners at this week’s draw, including three winners of the £25 prize and one lucky winner, Catherine Pritchard of Horsham, winning a family meal voucher at The Crown in Horsham. Catherine commented: “I was so surprised to hear that I had won the bonus prize at this week’s lottery draw. I think the idea of a Community Lottery to support local community groups is a great idea and I was happy to buy a ticket for the local charity Know Dementia, because this disease affects so many people. I am

looking forward now to spending my prize voucher and enjoying a meal with my family at the Crown pub.” Ticket holders can choose which community group they want to support. There are many different types of organisations to select from when buying a ticket, from sports clubs, school associations and amateur dramatic societies, to local environmental groups, community projects and those giving support to the vulnerable members of our community. Cllr Tricia Youtan, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet member for Community and Wellbeing, said: “I am delighted that our new community lottery has been supported so widely by our local community groups and residents, reflecting the real enthusiasm our residents have to help support those causes that are close to their hearts. To have sold over 1200 tickets after just one month of ticket sales is a fantastic achievement for our community

groups. “Over 80 community groups have signed up so far to receive a share of the funds. I would encourage more to get involved – it’s free to join, easy to sign up and every group has the potential to raise vital funds for their work. All groups involved are also given marketing support to help them reach out to their supporters. “Groups were encouraged to try to sell at least 50 tickets from their supporters; those who do will raise £1300 per year. We have five groups who have already reached this target, which is an amazing start.” The lottery is run on behalf of Horsham District Council by external provider Gatherwell, which already runs a similar scheme for many other local councils. Community groups and those wanting to buy tickets should visit www.horshamdistrictcommunitylottery.co.uk Telephone: 01403 434010.

Initial preparation works begin at land north of Horsham Initial preparation works have begun at land north of Horsham, Legal & General announced on 7 October 2019. The land north of Horsham site has outline planning permission for 2,750 homes, 500,000 sq ft of new employment space, an education campus and sports hub, along with new pedestrian, cycle and road connections. The site was acquired by Legal & General from Liberty Property Trust in December 2018. On Monday 7 October, work began to carefully remove hedgerows on the north side of the A264 / Rusper Road roundabout before construction of an improved roundabout starts in early 2020. The improved roundabout is key to the delivery of the new Bohunt Horsham School on the site. A planning application for the new

school was submitted by the Department for Education in August 2019 and the school is expected to open in September 2021. The hedgerow removal is being undertaken under a licence from Natural England which requires the works to be completed in October. A temporary fence will then be installed to replace the hedgerow and secure the land in preparation for the main construction works beginning in 2020. New hedgerows and other landscaping will be planted as part of the future works. Archaeological investigation is also underway between the harvest and new planting seasons and works are progressing well. No other construction activity will start on site until early 2020. Legal & General will be holding drop-in events before the end of

the year for the local community to meet the team, ask questions, and find out more about what is planned at land north of Horsham. More details will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Anyone with queries can contact Legal & General by telephone on 020 7323 3544 or by email at info@landnorthofhorsham.co.uk A spokesperson for Legal & General said: “These initial works are key to us preparing for construction of the improved roundabout on the A264, which is essential infrastructure for the forthcoming school at land north of Horsham. We have been working hard behind the scenes and are very keen to discuss our ideas and detailed plans with the local community. We will be confirming details soon and hope as many people as possible can attend.”

Our lovely school is set in beautiful, natural surroundings. It is a safe, nurturing and inspirational place in which to learn. Supporting emotional wellbeing this World Mental Health Day

Mental health problems can affect anyone, any day of the year. But yesterday (Thursday 10 October, 2019) was World Mental

Health Day - a day for global mental health education, discussion, awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

So West Sussex County Council’s Youth Emotional Support (YES) Service is taking the opportunity to encourage everyone to

take steps to look after their own wellbeing. This week, the YES team is promoting five recognised steps we can all take to live happier, more positive and fulfilled lives: 1. Connect – connect with the people around you: your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Spend time developing these relationships. Learn more in Connect for mental wellbeing. 2. Be active – you don’t have to go to the gym. Take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your life. Learn more in Get active for mental wellbeing. 3. Keep learning – learning new skills can give you a sense of achievement and a new confidence. So why not sign up for that cooking course, start learning to play a musical instrument, or figure out how to fix your bike? Find out more in Learn for mental wellbeing. 4. Give to others – even the smallest act can count, whether it’s a smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering at your local community centre, can improve your mental wellbeing and help you build new social networks. Learn more in Give for mental wellbeing. 5. Be mindful – be more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. Some people call this awareness “mindfulness”. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. Learn more in Mindfulness for mental wellbeing. YES is part of the Early Help services in West Sussex and helps young people aged 11-18 to identify, acknowledge and work

through difficulties that are having a negative impact on their emotional wellbeing. Last year, the YES team supported 2,152 young people and a further 466 were helped to find alternative services provided by partners. Some of the things YES supports young people with includes anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence, harming behaviours, low mood and depression, sexual identity and gender identity, emotionally-based school absence, sleep issues and how to regulate emotions. Paul Marshall, West Sussex County Councillor for Children and Young People, said: “Our highly trained YES team offer free one-to-one and group support to young people through a variety of locations around the county. “Staff work closely with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), GPs, school nurses and colleagues in Early Help to support young people through the challenges of adolescence and in assisting them in making positive choices in their journey to improved mental health and emotional wellbeing. “May I wish everyone a happy and healthy World Mental Health Day.” Some of the young people supported by the YES team said: “I feel better because I decided to change my thinking…I learned techniques for relaxation and combating anxiety.” “My mood and life have changed for the better since working with my YES worker.” “Each session has provided me with constructive advice to help me challenge and improve my wellbeing.”

Tara Braves the Shave for Macmillan Cancer Support Tara Tester, from Billingshurst, has been a dedicated fundraiser for Macmillan for some years now and has already signed up again this year for Macmillan’s Gosober. Tara wanted to do more to help those whose lives have been affected by cancer, so she decided to go for the Brave for Shave. On Saturday 21 September, whilst at the Kings Arms, Billingshurst, Fun Day, Tara had her

head shaved. Karl from the local Leonardo’s Barber Shop kindly volunteered to do the shave and a crowd of supporters cheered Tara on as the hair fell. Donations came flooding in and an impressive £871.58 was raised, all for Local Cancer Care! Tara, who would like to thank everyone for their donation, was said to be overwhelmed at the total raised and is slowly getting used to her bald head.

‘Old Blue’makes history with speech at Lord Mayor’s Election Former Christ’s Hospital pupil (Old Blue) Onyinye Udokporo made an inspirational speech at the election ceremony for the new Lord Mayor of the City of London, on Wednesday 2 October, to an audience of 1,200. It was the first time in over 800 years that there was a guest speaker at the Lord Mayor’s Election ceremony. Onyinye’s speech was about her education at Christ’s Hospital and how much of a positive impact it had on her life. Onyinye boarded at Christ’s Hospital for her full seven-year secondary education, from 2009–2016. “Moving from North London to

West Sussex took a lot of getting used to; when I first arrived, aged 11, I asked my parents where the nearest tube station was,” said Onyinye in her speech. “But I soon grew immune to the smell of cow dung and got used to being dressed like someone out of Harry Potter. All jokes, aside, Christ’s Hospital gave me the best education any child could ask for. It really did change my life for the better! Education is one of the most powerful tools in the world... I received an education that helped me break barriers and create positive change.” Speaking about her address at the Lord Mayor’s Election, Onyinye said, “I

am hugely honoured and humbled to be given this opportunity.” Onyinye was presented to Christ’s Hospital, when she was just 11 years old, by The Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers, which is one of the ancient Livery Companies of the City of London. Christ’s Hospital has close links to the City of London and a number of City livery companies provide bursarial support for CH pupils. Both the Tylers and Bricklayers and the School itself helped support Onyinye with a bursary. She was then chosen to be the first female apprentice in history of The Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers in

2016. The apprenticeship takes seven years, after which she will be given the Freedom of the City of London and will be a Liveryman of the Tylers and Bricklayers. Onyinye has finished an undergraduate degree in Religion,

Politics and Society and is now completing a Masters Degree in Education, Policy and Society at King’s College London. She is also running an education business, Enrich Learning and is on the King’s College London Alumni Advisory Board.

Primary school applications open Applications have now opened for places for children due to start primary school in September 2020. Children born between 1 September 2015 and 31 August 2016 will be eligible to start primary or infant school next September. Parents of children currently in Year 2 at infant school should also apply for a place at junior school next year. Applications opened on Monday, 7 October 2019 and close on Wednesday 15 January 2020. The quickest and easiest way to apply is online at https://www. westsussex.gov.uk/educationchildren-and-families/schoolsand-colleges/school-places/ Parents will receive an automatic e-mail acknowledgement that the application has been received. Free use of computers with internet access is available in all West Sussex libraries. Those unable to apply online can request a form by phoning 033 301 42903. The form must be returned by the application deadline. How the application process works: • Parents can apply for up to three different schools and must place them in order of preference. • Parents are strongly encouraged to include your catchment

school as one of your three preferences, although living in a catchment area does not guarantee a place at the catchment school. • Those who miss the deadline for applications must still submit an application form as a child will not automatically be allocated a school. Richard Burrett, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “It is really important that parents and carers submit their applications on time to stand the best chance of their child going to one of their preference schools. It’s always a good idea to visit schools and look at their websites first, so people’s preferences are informed.” The closing date for all primary, infant and junior school applications is 11.59pm on Wednesday, 15 January 2020. Secondary school admissions are currently open for September 2020 and close on Thursday 31 October 2019. West Sussex County Council staff are available to help parents through the admissions process. Parents can telephone 033 301 42903 or email the admissions team north: admissions.north@ westsussex.gov.uk or the admissions team south: admissions. south@westsussex.gov.uk

Coolham Airfield’s poignant new fixture - a place to ‘sit and contemplate’ In June this year, the service and sacrifices of servicemen based at Coolham airfield was remembered and commemorated with the D-Day 75 year anniversary commemorative walk around the airfield. Over the same weekend, two commemorative information boards were erected; one on the airfield itself, and the other by the Memorial, adjacent to the Selsey Arms pub at Coolham crossroads. The information boards were built and erected by the Shipley Men’s Shed. The Shedders have since then continued to maintain the information boards and the site of the fifteen oak trees planted 25 years ago. The oak trees were planted in memory of the fifteen servicemen who lost their lives in the few months, before and after D-day, that the airfield was operational. Local man, Bob Phillips remembers the excitement (as a young lad) of watching the bustling activities of this temporary airfield as it went about its vital business supporting the Allied invasion of France. Bob still lives on the edge of what was the airfield, and when one of his oak trees was brought down in the great storm of 1997,

he stored the timber, donating recently the very last two planks to the Shipley Men’s Shed. From this oak, the Shedders have now fashioned a rustic bench which has been placed next to the fifteen oak trees, facing south across the airfield towards the Normandy landing grounds. Walkers and visitors may now sit in quiet contemplation at this tranquil spot and take in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Richard Harris is a Trustee of the Horsham and Shipley Community Project which includes, among many activities, the Shipley Men’s Shed: “We wanted to create a resting place for walkers to read the information board and then take a moment. And when Bob came forward with this timber from one of only a few oak trees that survived the construction of the airfield, we had to use it. I wish to thank Bob for the timber and the lovely guys in our Men’s Shed who have created the bench. “We hope it will be used by walkers who will walk the two miles of runway perimeter, read our information boards and sit, and contemplate the service and sacrifice of those young men all those years ago.”

Michelin Star Awarded to First Vineyard Restaurant

Set within the historic Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens estate near Horsham, Restaurant Interlude is believed to be the first UK restaurant associated with its own vineyard to win a Michelin Star - UK and Ireland 2020 Michelin Guide Awards, Hurlingham Club, London, October 7 2019. Open for just one year, the res-

taurant’s tasting menu is inspired by the Grade I Listed woodland gardens, with ingredients foraged or grown on the 240 acre Leonardslee estate, and other produce sourced from selected local farms. Restaurant Interlude is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday weekly, with ten tables. Bookings are online at https://www.restau-

rant-interlude.co.uk/reservations. The restaurant has views across the gardens and its Pinotage vineyard, planted in 2018. There are 72,000 vines under cultivation across 15 hectares at Leonardslee and a neighbouring site at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, part of the Benguela Collection vineyards and hospitality group in the UK and South Africa. Owner Penny Streeter OBE brought Executive Chef Jean Delport from his native South Africa to open the restaurant in October 2018. He is only the second South African chef to win a Michelin Star for his restaurant, and one of the youngest recipients, aged 31. Jean Delport, who manages a team of seven kitchen staff, commented: “We are delighted to receive this recognition by Michelin after just one year. Interlude connects lovers of fine dining with the very spirit of Leonardslee, perhaps the finest woodland gardens in England, unspoilt and carefully curated for over 200 years. “Every dish in each seasonal, multi-course tasting menu is designed to a hunter-gatherer concept of food that’s foraged, cul-

tivated and raised on the estate or close by. It is savoured and enjoyed as an intimate dining experience; a small, exclusive dinner party within the estate’s Italianate mansion house.” Diners can feast on the seasonal menu that might include: estate rabbit, winter purslane, hogweed cider and charcoal; fallow deer with local braai and sour raspberry; or oyster, foraged greens and juniper. Guests arriving at Restaurant Interlude in the estate mansion house, built in 1855, are greeted in the grand hallway with music from a self-playing piano and drinks in the bar. They are then seated together at around 7pm in the restaurant, enjoying views across acres of gardens in the steep valley below, and east and south across to the South Downs. Jean has particular experience, from South Africa, of how to complement innovative tasting menus with fine wines. Guests at Interlude can enjoy a selection of vintages from the owner’s vineyard at Benguela Cove, Hermanus, as well as from other estates in South Africa. Penny Streeter OBE opened the restaurant on October 19 2018, after

18 months’ extensive restoration of the Grade II Listed mansion house and the creation of new kitchens. Her Benguela Collection vineyards and hospitality group includes the 400 acre Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate, located three miles from Leonardslee, and the Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate in the Walker Bay region of South Africa. Executive Chef Jean Delport formerly worked with owner Penny Streeter at her restaurant in Somerset West, Cape Town for several years. Jean trained and won awards at the prestigious Zevenwacht Chef School in South Africa. With a background in classical French and English cooking, including several seasons in Ireland, he is noted as an innovator, changing and improving upon his own menus and selection of ingredients regularly. Chef Ruan Pretorius began his career, and was finally head chef at restaurant Terroir in the Cape winelands in South Africa. Terroir is one of South Africa’s most decorated restaurants, in the top 20 of the country for 19 years running. He decided to join Jean Delport in the UK to meet an exciting new challenge at Restaurant Interlude.

Winner of The Sussex Comedian of the Year announced following another successful Year of Culture event Davey Pearson

Managing Director

Last Friday (4 Oct) saw the grand final of the Sussex Comedian Of The Year Competition, and what a competition it was. Hosted by the talented Paul Ricketts, a seasoned stand up comic, the Horsham Year of Culture 2019 show, had been building over the past 8 months with 4 heats to find 6 finalists.I, along with four other judges Kevin Precious of Barnstormer Comedy, Professional comedian Dan Evans, Kaye Freeman of Andromeda Talent, Becky Hughes of Freeman Brothers and Matthew Fisher from Scamp Speakers, had the job to choose a winner from 6 very funny comedians.Paul set the scene nicely, prepping the audience with confident ownership of the event, he even offered the prize of a Co op pork pie to those brave enough to fill dreaded front row. Whilst a pork pie was an obviously delightful prize for one member of the crowd, no such prize would suffice for our crowned winner, no, the prize for

this prestigious and much anticipated competition of humour and wit,was an amazing £500, a slot at The Capitol Theatre and the coveted Sussex Comedian of the Year trophy, oooooh! To kick off the night our first act was Dave Eagle. With his hilarious dark humour and using his own blindness as the subject of his content, Dave gave the audience a real flavour of what to expect from the night. He was followed by the 5 further finalists, Michael Akadiri, Konstantin Kistin, Michael Durchov, Carl Carzana and Esther Manito. All the acts delivered fantastic performances, and the audience responded well, with plenty of noise and laughter. The time had come to decide the winner and we scurried away into a small back room to discuss our thoughts. After making what was a difficult decision, our winner of the Sussex Comedian of the Year 2019 was the awesome Martin Durchov. Martin had won the very first heat way back in March, and again highly impressed the judges. His native Bulgaria was very much the topic and I person-

ally found his innocent persona and the ability to mock himself, as well as show pride for his heritage, a driving factor to his success on the the night. We caught up with Martin after the show to find out how he was feeling: “I am feeling very happy, I have been in many comedy competition finals but never won one and the feeling is amazing. I was very grateful as well for the validation. Winning really makes you feel like putting in all the hours of writing, taking trains and doing shows for no money actually has a point and could maybe lead to something one day. “As part of winning the competition I get to perform at The Capitol in Horsham on the Big Sundae show as a guest spot alongside some amazing comedians off TV, I hope in 5 years I can come back as a regular spot on a show like that with TV credits of my own.I don’t think there is enough representation of Eastern European comedy on British Tv and I hope I can change that in the next 5 years” Well done to all the acts and especially Martin, one to watch for sure.

Super Strictly Vintage raises £1,700 for local charity!

On Saturday 5 October small, local charity working with older people, Age UK Horsham District, hung the bunting high and threw open the doors of The

Drill Hall to entertain 100 guests at their ‘Strictly Vintage’ 1940’s and 1950’s themed Evening Dance. There was a fabulous turnout of

guests of all ages dressed magnificently in vintage style outfits and the evening was spent dancing to music from the eras provided by the ‘Royal British Legion Dance

Band’. The Charity’s Business Development and Fundraising Manager, Julie Branson, said: “Our Strictly Vintage Dances get more and more popular every time, with this our ninth event! We are so pleased that our Evening Dances continue to grow in popularity, this one being our third. We hope that all our guests will return again on 21st March 2020 for live music and dancing, and to support our charity. In the meantime, we have lots of exciting events and activities planned for the next few months, in the lead up to Christmas, and I would encourage our local community to get in touch to find out more about our charity and to see how the money raised from such events is spent.” During the evening the Horsham Business community, the Royal British Legion Dance Band and other individual local supporters were thanked for being integral to the success of these dance events. The event, organised by the Age UK Horsham District Fundraising Team, with many Age UK Horsham District staff and volunteers providing support, was a huge success and raised £1,682 for the local charity’s work with, and for, older people in the community. All monies raised at this event go towards funding the free ser-

vices the team at Age UK Horsham District offer across the district to support local older people, such as their Visiting and Information and Advice Services. Loneliness is one of the key issues the charity tackles - over 1 million older people in the UK say they always or often feel lonely and loneliness is fast becoming a serious public health concern, with research suggesting it can be as bad for one’s health as smoking or being morbidly obese. With a rapidly ageing population, this means more pressure on already stretched NHS and social care services. Age UK Horsham District is committed to reducing and preventing loneliness among older people locally and their Visiting Service is just one of the ways they do this. The service matches a volunteer to a lonely older person, who then makes regular visits to offer friendship, social interaction and support. If you would like to find out more about how Age UK Horsham District could help you or someone you know, or how you could help the charity, please contact them on 01403 260560, email info@ ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk or visit www.ageukhorshamdistrict. org.uk Image: Attendees having a ball at the 2019 Strictly Vintage Evening Dance

Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 interview with Julia Donaldson CBE

Julia Donaldson CBE, author of the worldwide phenomenon, The Gruffalo, is bringing her new show The Gruffalo, The Witch and The Warthog to the Capitol Theatre in Horsham this half term – Monday 28 October to Tuesday 29 October. Described as ‘a truly uplifting

hour’ during its sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the show is aimed at children aged 4-10 years. The Horsham District Year of Culture team caught up with Julia to find out more about this magical children’s show: Hello Julia, Your show, The

Gruffalo, The Witch and the Warthog, is coming to the Capitol in Horsham this half term. What can audiences expect from the show? Is it you reading the books? No, it’s much more dramatic than that! There are five actors (including myself) and we act out several stories and songs, with a

lovely set and lots of puppets and props – even with some magic tricks. How do you bring the characters to life? I act the witch in Room on the Broom, with whom I have a lot of sympathy as – like her – I’m always dropping and losing things. I also act the wildebeest in The Ugly Five and the wily mouse in The Gruffalo. I’ve always enjoyed acting, and the books have been a good excuse to tread the boards. Not many authors get up on stage to perform, do you enjoy it as much as writing your books? Yes, I do, and it’s a very good contrast. Writing is essentially solitary, whereas with acting you’re relating to the audience and the other actors. I also do a signing afterwards, so get a chance to talk to children and their parents and carers. Is it just you on stage, or are there other people joining you? The other actors are my husband Malcolm, who plays the guitar and acts the wicked emperor in The Magic Paintbrush as well as the fox in The Gruffalo; my sister Mary, who is a wonderful Marabou Stork as well as being the Owl in The Gruffalo; and two younger professional actors. What books and songs do you feature in the show? The books are Room on the Broom, The Ugly Five, The Cook and the King (which is very funny), The Magic Paintbrush and The Gruffalo. And the songs are The Superworm Song and a

more soulful song called The World Inside a Book which is a celebration of reading. A little bird (or maybe a mouse) told us you love singing, are you singing on stage as part of the show? Yes, I do like singing, and I hope the audience will too, as there’s an opportunity for them to join in The Superworm Song. (I also get some children on stage for this item, to act as various garden creatures.) You’ve had such a successful career so far, what’s your stand out moment to date? There are so many! But nothing can really beat winning the Smarties Prize for The Gruffalo 20 years ago. I was working in a school then, as a writer in residence, and when the children learnt I’d won the gold award in the picture-book category they solemnly presented me with a golden star. 2019 has been a very busy year for you - being made a CBE, The Gruffalo’s 20th anniversary and your new book The Smeds and Smoos has just been published. What’s next for 2020? A visit down under is the first thing on the agenda. I’ll be going to Australia with Malcolm to take part in various book festivals, and am looking forward to tacking some holiday on to both ends. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy The Gruffalo, The Witch and The Warthog, taking place at The Capitol on Monday 28 at 2pm and 5pm and on Tuesday 29 October at 11am and 2.30pm. For tickets visit the Capitol website www.thecapitolhorsham. com, or call 01403 750220.

Black Heart Angel to support Stone Shiva at the Rec Rooms

Black Heart Angel (aka BHA) are an experienced, five-piece, classic rock, covers band based in the Horsham/Crawley area of Sussex. A hard-rockin’ family of friends, BHA formed from the ashes of Hollows of Venus in late

2014. Tara (lead vocals, fruity swearing), Gibby (lead guitar, PA pains) and Neill (rhythm guitar, bv’s, admin), coaxed our secret weapon Kim (drums, the best tshirts) out of early retirement and started gigging with HOV bassist Mike (bass, buses) in early 2015.

After Mike’s departure, local Horsham legend Kris (caps, beard & bass) completed the epic legendary line-up. Playing music they all love, BHA pride themselves on delivering a from-the-heart rock n’ roll experience; loud music, sing-alongs, smiles and laughter. Expect classic bangers from the likes of Queen, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, as well as some reimagined hits from the 80’s and 90’s given the BHA treatment. BHA collectively have a vast wealth of experience, with members having played in (or continuing to play in) bands such as Everafta, Cave, Hollows of Venus, Geist, Sonic Deluxe, Intermission, ManBitesDog, Red Mosquito, Scarecrow Rodeo, Paper Jam, The Conspiracy Mailman Band... they’re basically musical tarts, albeit massively talented, soughtafter & experienced musical tarts, who love what they do. BHA will be supporting originals band ‘Stone Shiva’ at Horsham’s REC Rooms on 26 October. To book, please visit: https:// therecrooms.com/

Christ’s Hospital Choral Society autumn concert is titled Music of Freedom and Destiny. The performance will feature three main pieces by well-loved composers Brahms, Verdi and Rutter. Here are a few snippets of info about it all to entice you to attend. Seaside summer holidays, 1868, and Johannes Brahms was struck by the sensational shoreline of where he was staying. It resonated

with a poem by Friedrich Hölderin he had just read, and this combination stirred the 35-year old to compose the ‘Schicksalslied’, also known here as ‘Song of Destiny’. While inspiration seemingly struck him, it took the perfectionist three years to find the perfect finish. It is considered to be amongst Brahms’ best choral works. ‘Feel the Spirit’ is quite different in style. Contemporary composer/ conductor/producer John Rut-

ter gives a dynamic swing to his arrangement of the seven striking spirituals in this piece. Professional soprano Nina Bennet will join the choir to sing the solos. Finally, Guiseppe Verdi. Many readers will know Verdi’s rousing ‘Va Pensiero’, or ‘Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves’, the well-loved piece from his 1842 opera Nabucco. Verdi demonstrated an aptitude for music at an early start; aged eight, he was the official paid organist of

his local church. Not much later, he started composing his wide variety of music. He became Italy’s most admired opera composer in the days that opera was a most important form of culture. In 1901, after 88 years of music making, he passed away. The funeral was full of music and passion and creative flair. More than half the residents of Milan assembled in the streets and sang the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, accompanied by orchestral players and professional singers, with Arturo Toscanini conducting. In fact, it could be the original version of the modern-day flash mob! Has this whetted your appetite? In November, you will have the opportunity to enjoy these wonderful pieces in Horsham! Refreshments will be available, supporting Children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House. Saturday 2 November, 7.30 PM at St. Mary’s Church, The Causeway. Tickets from Choir members or CH Box Office, 01403 247434, or at the door. For more information on the choir, please visit https://chchoralsoc.org/

Smiles all round at The Peter Pan Press Launch

There were smiles all round at The Capitol’s Peter Pan Press Launch earlier this week when this year’s cast and staff from The Capitol started to feel festive in the build up to their fantastic family pantomime. Nick Mowat, General Manager and Pantomime Director welcomed local media contacts and sponsors and introduced the cast at The Capitol, Horsham. Anthony

Sahota stars as Peter Pan “the boy who never grew up” and will appear alongside Nicola Hume, well known for presenting the breakfast radio show for 6 years on Heart FM. Nicholas Collier and Rebecca Lafferty, who have both appeared in West End shows, play Captain Hook/Mr Darling and Wendy Darling respectively, and their “on stage” sons John and Michael will be played by four

local rising stars Daniel Kendon, Oscar Ward-Dutton, Dexter Lamley-Grinstead and Theo Ranganathan. Following pantomime tradition, there will be a welcome return from Hywel Dowsell - who plays the Dame, Mrs Smee and, together with “her” son Mini Smee, played by James Fletcher, the two will make the perfect double-act. Complemented by a juvenile ensemble of 26 lost boys and girls who were selected at the theatre’s summer auditions and all of whom attend local schools, this brand NEW version of the classic story is kindly sponsored by Independent Estate Agents Brock Taylor and Horsham Bedding Centre and opens on Friday 13 December, running until Sunday 5 January 2020. 2019 marks the 90th Anniversary that JM Barrie gifted the (Peter Pan) rights to Great Ormond Street Hospital and The Capitol will be organising bucket collections after every performance with the donations going to the Charity. Tickets available online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com or from the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

Community invited to sculpture unveiling at Highwood Village

Local residents of Horsham are invited to join Berkeley Homes as they unveil the highly-anticipated sculpture at Highwood Village on Wednesday 23rd October. The public event, being held between 6pm and 7pm, will give visitors the chance to watch the grand reveal of the dramatic finished carving by Berkeley Homes

Southern Managing Director, Harry Lewis and sculpture artist Jon Edgar. As part of Horsham District’s Year of Culture 2019, local artist Jon Edgar was commissioned to install the exciting new piece of art at the beginning of this year, before it was officially launched at Highwood Village in February. Throughout the year, he has

sculpted and carved the six-tonne stone block, drawing inspiration from local residents and passersby to create the final piece. After inviting the local community to take part in making the first chisel marks on the stone at the launch event in February, the artist has also encouraged the local community to take part in helping the progress of the stone

throughout the year, teaching basic carving skills to all those interested. Ben Annetts, Sales and Marketing Director at Berkeley Homes, comments: “We are extremely excited to be unveiling the fantastic new public art sculpture at Highwood Village on the 16th of October. We would like to thank and congratulate Jon Edgar for his magnificent creation. He has worked very hard this year to create a sculpture which will provide a timeless and memorable piece of art that the whole community can enjoy for years to come. Our thanks also go to the local residents who worked with Jon to help influence the final design.” Comprising stylish one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as beautiful two, three, four and five-bedroom family houses, Highwood Village creates a vibrant new community with its own identity, within easy walking distance of Horsham town centre. The centre of Horsham is a twenty-minute walk away and offers an excellent array of shops including high-street brands and independent shops as well as an abundance of bars, pubs and restaurants. Prices at Highwood Village start from £235,000. For further information on the homes and the sculpture unveiling, please contact the marketing suite on Tel: 01403 886 759 or visit www. highwoodvillage.com

Horsham win with strong second half display Saturday October 5 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 2 1 Chelmsford Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham notched up their first win of the season last Saturday, against Chelmsford at Broadbridge Heath. Although both sides might have scored in the first half, it was a somewhat dour, scrappy and goal-less encounter. Horsham, though, came into their own after the break, scoring twice in the more animated first quarter, applying a full press. Return-

ing to the club after a season at Brighton, Fran Crossley crashed in a short corner to open the scoring. Then, Elle Blakesley doubled Horsham’s lead when she maximised a cross from Ladies’ Club Captain Charlotte (CJ) White. The Essex visitors clawed back a goal in the fourth quarter, putting Horsham under pressure for the last five mintues, but they were successfully kept at bay. On Saturday Horsham make the long trip to east Kent to take on Canterbury at Polo Farm. Canterbury has lost both of their games thus far this season, scoring once in the process.

Horsham’s Tom Clark picked for England U19 winter tour Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Tom Clark is in the 16-strong England squad for the Under 19’s forthcoming tour to the Caribbean, where the Young Lions will play in a 50-over triseries against West Indies U19 and Sri Lanka U19. The last competitive test for the players before the ICC U19 World Cup, in South Africa in January and February 2020. Tall left hander Tom earned selection because of his batting prowess, useful medium pace bowling and outstanding fielding, Horsham President Barry Peay telling the District Post: “The Club is delighted for Tom, and we all hope that he builds on his recent First Class debut for Sussex, against Worcestershire at Hove.” Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall added: “Coming so soon after Tom’s first match for Sussex it is great to see him going on this tour after playing for England U19s in this summer’s home Tri Tournament v India and Bangladesh.” Tom Clark follows Horsham Will Beer’s appearances for England U19s ten years ago, when he impressed against New Zealand, another former Horsham player, Chris Nash having been in the England Lions’ squad in 2011. George Garton subsequently also played for both England U19s and the Lions, before Horsham’s contribution to senior cricket was crowned by Jofra Archer’s achievements on the world stage. England U19 Head Coach Jon Lewis says: “With the World Cup on the horizon, this is our last opportunity to assess our squad and decide which 15 players to take with us to South Africa. Nearly half the squad secured county first team appearances this summer, gaining fantastic development experiences, a major step on their journey towards understanding the levels needed to

be successful professional cricketers. West Indies and Sri Lanka are both countries with fantastic cricketing pedigrees and cultures, so we’re sure to experience strong and diverse challenges ahead of our main objective after Christmas.” The squad benefits from guidance from Ian Bell, Warwickshire and former England batsman, joining the party as batting coach, with former Hampshire wicketkeeper Nic Pothas as fielding supremo, Lewis saying: “I’m delighted to welcome Ian and Nic for our two winter tours, both have exactly the right fit for the team and the programme. Their experience adds value for the players - Ian is one of his generation’s highest run scorers, with experience of playing under pressure at the highest levels, including multiple World Cups, a brilliant resource to tap into. And, superb fielding

and wicketkeeping coach Nic has great experience in international coaching with West Indies and Sri Lanka and, as a native of South Africa, he’s an ideal candidate to fill gaps in our knowledge of our opponents and the conditions we shall encounter. His expertise will impact on our skill execution in the field - as we saw during the final moments of the World Cup Final, it’s an area that can make the difference between winning and losing trophies.”The team will be based in Antigua, playing warm up matches on the 1st and 3rd of December, before facing Sri Lanka at the Coolidge Cricket Ground on the 6th and West Indies at the same venue on the 9th, followed by fixtures at the island’s Sir Vivian Richards’ Stadium, ahead of the Tri-Series Final on December 21st at a venue to be decided.

Horsham slip to defeat in final quarter Poor marking condemns improving Horsham Saturday October 5 – Premier – Division 2 East Epsom Men’s 1st XI 7 3 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter For the second week running Horsham took the lead, only to finish the losing side. At Epsom they were 2 nil up at the break after Ed Marsh had opening the scoring, followed by a goal from Zac Chinn, both successes coming in open play. But, Horsham were undone by a nightmare start to the second half, three goals coming in as many minutes, poor marking putting the Surrey hosts in front. Frustration over-spilled resulting in three Horsham

players being sin binned, following which Epsom scored twice more to lead 5-2. Horsham reduced the deficit when Russell Dale tapped in Joey Humphreys’ supply, but Epsom responded with further goals to run out comfortable 7-3 winners. However, three black minutes apart, this was a much improved Horsham showing, although the consensus was that they should have been further ahead at half time, opportunities created having gone begging. Horsham return home on Saturday to welcome Purley Walcountians for a 1.30 push back at Broadbridge Heath. Walcountians won their first game of the season, but lost 4-3 to top of the table Wimbledon last Saturday

Saturday October 5 – RFU London 1 South League Medway 32 18 Horsham

Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter With both sides having identical playing records this season, Horsham’s trip to Rochester to take on perennial strong contenders Medway produced the anticipated tough encounter. Horsham’s young side ultimately paid the price for late errors in an otherwise closely fought match. Starting with possession, Medway tested the visiting defence, but Horsham opened the scoring when Vince Everitt’s feed enabled Mike Tredgett to get over the line, unconverted. Horsham soon increased their lead with a welltaken Frankie Smith penalty, and it got even better when a strong chase culminated with match skipper Johnny Goward posting a try in the corner, Smith’s conversion giving Horsham a 15 nil advantage mid way through

the first half. Medway responded energetically, gaining territory, eventually clawing back a converted try, but Horsham promptly benefited from another of Smith’s impressive kicks, this time a penalty into the wind. But, with the interval beckoning, despite Horsham defending tigerishly, Medway completed their second try – converted – before slotting home a penalty, leaving the score tantilisingly poised at 17-18 at the break. On resumption the hosts went ahead for the first time, from a penalty after Horsham had failed to release the ball in a tackle, instigating a gritty tug of war with the defences at either end negating attacks - until a dropped clearance kick allowed Medway to regain possession and fashion a converted try. With Horsham now trailing 27-18, suddenly the possibility of defeat loomed, but the Green and Whites confirmed that they were not prepared to succumb without a fight and the outcome might well have been different but for a penalty miss

and a seemingly certain try being denied when a pass was adjudged to have been forward. Worse followed when, just before full time, Medway launched an attack, ending in a bonus point try for them to win 32-18, enabling them to pocket all five points despite Horsham being in strong contention for much of the game, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “Ultimately our first half performance was not enough, it was a case of Medway’s experience prevailing over our youthful exuberance”. Horsham Attack Coach Richard Bell added: “We produced a dominant first 30 minute performance and had good control of the game in all facets, so it was disappointing because the lads know that they should have won, and Medway admitting that the score flattered them doesn’t make coming away with nothing easier to swallow!” On Saturday, determined to return to winning ways, Horsham are at home to Dartfordians, against whom they have had many memorable battles.

Horsham stay top after drawing four goal thriller

Tuesday October 8 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 2 2 Carshalton Athletic Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter There was another good turnout - 556 spectators – at Horsham’s Camping World Stadium on Tuesday evening, and they were entertained royally throughout a lively encounter. BetVictor Manager of the month for September, Horsham’s Dom Di Paola, rightly anticipated a tough game against Carshalton, who showed that they are a team to be respected. The score line might have been different, but for both keepers pulling off excellent saves, culminating in a fair result. Horsham started quietly, but after the visitors had crossed the ball to no avail, a Kieron Pamment foray was safely gathered by Kleton Perntreoy in the visiting goal, ahead of a Horsham corner. Then Christie Pattisson bursting through on the right drew a good reaction save from George Bentley, before he tipped over another shot, Carshalton squandering the corner. But, action

soon switched to the other end, where Harry Mills had a strike blocked and Charlie Harris’ low, close range effort was deflected for the Hornets’ second corner. Carshalton, though, got the ball in the net, the goal being disallowed because of pushing in the box, but Horsham promptly went behind in the 36th minute when Omar Koroma converted a penalty after Alex Kelly had executed a trip in the box, Bentley’s finger tips getting insufficient purchase on an excellent low drive. Horsham responded with a series of attacks, Pamment heading onto the roof of the net before Harvey Sparks’ supply was volleyed home by Chris Smith. And, two minutes later it got even better for the Hornets when Harris took advantage of lax marking to post Horsham’s second goal. With Horsham on fire Rob O’Toole skewed the ball well adrift, the score remaining 2-1 in home favour at the break. As expected, Carshalton resumed in fighting mode, quickly earning a corner and then testing Bentley. Two Horsham set pieces followed, Perntreoy dropping the ball from the second, but recovering. With Carshalton spurred into action,

Ricky Korboa blazed over and skipper Bobby Price unleashed a speculative long shot, thwarted by Bentley’s dive. The visitors were getting plenty of ball and Bentley had to be at his best to keep out a fierce blast, but when the ball was subsequently spilled at Price’s feet he grasped the opportunity to equalise with just under a quarter of an hour of full time left. For the next 10 minutes, amid substitutions, Carshalton put Horsham under sustained pressure, Bentley keeping them at bay in pin ball action. On 90 minutes Jordan Cheadle was sent off for a second yellow card as Horsham went on the offensive trying to snatch a late winner, but, with Pamment close and clear, the ball was crashed wide and a home corner came to nothing, the combatants having to be content with a draw. After 11 games – at least one more than all but one other side – Horsham remain top of the table a point clear of Folkestone. On Saturday the Hornets are in Hertfordshire to play Bishop’s Stortford, currently struggling 18th in the Isthmian League table.

Saturday October 5 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 1 0 Hornchurch Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s excellent start to the season continued last Saturday with another win – their seventh from ten starts . In an upper table clash against Hornchurch, the Hornets move to the top of the Isthmian Premier Division, a position that they last enjoyed 13 seasons ago, their highest ever position. The first aim of any promoted side is to stay up, so after expecting a difficult start in their

new elevated league, Horsham management and supporters are absolutely thrilled with the team’s highly impressive start to the new season. The top scoring Essex side arrived at the Camping World Stadium with also the best defensive record in the league – 24 goals scored and just five conceded, making Horsham’s win all the more special, after the woodwork had denied the Hornets on three occasions in the tense second half. Horsham suffered an early set back when an injury necessitated the replacement of Captain Will Miles by Dylan Merchant, but they were soon into their stride with efforts from both Charlie Harris and Chris Smith, Har-

ris’ shot being off target before Smith was unable to capitalise. Hornchurch also had an opportunity, but winger George Saunders’ attempt was adrift, ahead of Harry Mills testing Hornchurch keeper Joe Wright with a distant probe. Then, George Bentley in the home goal gave Chris Dickson a chance, but Horsham recovered well go into the break on level pegging, neither side having scored. Action resumed with Kieron Pamment marginally off target ahead of the crossbar denying a blast from Jack Brivio. The visitors also had an opportunity, Ronnie Winn missing out, before Bentley pushed over a scorcher from Daniel Uchechi. Horsham, though, kept pressing, yet Zack Newton was unable to connect and the goal timber again came to Hornchurch’s rescue when Harvey Sparks’ drive crashed into the upright. With both sides seeking a match winning goal, a header from the visitors went just over, until, with time running out, Harris’ shot rebounded off the bar to Zack Newton, who retuned the ball to Harris to score the match winner. Spurred on by understandably animated supporters after enduring years of ground sharing and other setbacks, the Hornets successfully closed down the game for the historic win, with over 600 in attendance

YMCA bounce back with cup win after Eastbourne drubbing Saturday September 28 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division - Eastbourne Town 5 0 Horsham YMCA Tuesday October 1 – Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Round 1 Langney Wanderers 3 4 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Unbeaten in the league, Eastbourne Town now top the table by five clear points with eight wins from ten games, and on their home patch at The Saffrons they proved too strong for injury hit YM. Eastbourne started briskly, scoring in the seventh minute and adding two more first half goals, YM not being helped by Jack Ryder’s sending off for two yellow cards in quick succession, the first being somewhat harsh when he was too close to Eastbourne’s swiftly taken free kick. Early in the second half the East Sussex hosts scored again, before sub George Taggart added to YM’s woes with a left foot blast in the 86th minute, Manager Peter Buckland rueing YM’s challenging opening to the season, saying: “This has been our toughest start since I came to YM. We featured more in the second half, when

Martin Smith and Matt Daniel both got through and might have scored in one on one situations, but Eastbourne had their chances, too. They are a very strong side and fully deserve to be top.” However, three days later Eastbourne suffered a surprise defeat when they were knocked out of the Sussex Senior Cup in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of AFC Uckfield. YM meet Eastbourne in the FA Vase this Saturday, again at The Saffrons. YM, though, enjoyed their prompt return to Eastbourne, where, on the 3G pitch at Priory Road they knocked close rivals in the league table, Langney Wanderers, out of the Senior Cup after holding them to 2-2 at the break. Tony Nwachukwu had opened the scoring in the 13th minute, but, mid way through the first half, Langney found the net twice in the space of five minutes, before YM skipper Tom Gilbert equalised just before the break. Second half goals from Guy Harding and Matt Daniel gave YM a 4-2 lead, Langney getting a late consolation goal, Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “I told the players that I wanted to see a response after Eastbourne and they came back well against Langney. We’ll be visiting them again - in the league - on November 16th”

YMCA recover to take a point from high flying Lancing Saturday October 5 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division – Horsham YMCA 2 2 Lancing Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a good result against upper table Lancing, with YM demonstrating that they are more than capable of testing strong opponents. Last season YM completed a league double over Lancing, but this campaign the visitors are a tougher proposition. Yet, YM took the lead on the quarter of an hour mark, when loanee Lewis Taylor spotted Lancing keeper Matt Evans out of his goal and launched a perfectly placed lob, which cleared Evans and bounced into the empty net. Earlier Lancing had instigated forays and had earned a corner, but YM were defending well and created an unfulfilled opportunity when Dean Carden broke through down the left, with Matt Daniel in attendance. Lancing subsequently had a short range free kick, headed from the wall for another corner, fired harmlessly wide, as was a second set piece. YM keeper Aaron Jeal then pulled off an excellent reaction save when Mo Juwara, through and clear, clattered a cross. YM’s Dan Evans then surged through, again without success, before Tony Nwachukwu raced in, but the ball beat him to the keeper. Then, Matt Daniel was off target with five minutes to go to the break, only for Lancing to promptly equalise when George Fenton’s strike went in off the inside of the far post, leaving the score 1-1 at the interval. YM’s Under 23s had played at Lancing the night before, (where they won 3-1), restricting YM

substitution options, so it was a case of having to soldier on, and Jeal was soon called upon to conjure up an excellent save from a dangerous visitors’ move five minutes from the restart. YM replied with a free kick just outside the area, which was put off for an unrewarded corner, ahead of another set piece being sent across, only for Guy Harding to be just adrift. A pinpoint Lancing free kick then found Alex Bygraves’ head, but he, too, was wayward. Visiting sub Brad Sands seared the bar when well placed, but, just beyond the mid way stage of the half a strike hit the bar to be scrambled in by James Rhodes for Lancing to take the lead, 2-1. Suddenly, Lancing were getting more possession, but YM still created chances from two successive corners and then, following a very promising build up, Taylor’s volley was blocked. Late subs did then come on for YM, but frustration led to cards and, pressing for parity, Aaron Jeal came upfield to take a free kick, Daniel’s back header going just over, with Nwachukwu also being too aerial. Full time had come and gone, but there was still just enough left in the game for Daniel to snatch virtually a posthumous goal to share the points, Manager Peter Buckland telling the District Post: “We had 11 players missing today – a whole team! - almost all through injury, but we created more clear cut chances and that was a good result against a leading side. It looks as though we won’t be able to field our fully fit A team much before Christmas, so we’ve got to hang in there until then.” On Saturday, hoping to avenge their recent heavy league defeat at the hands of the leaders, YM return to The Saffrons to play Eastbourne Town in the FA Vase.

Jofra Archer returns to Horsham Cricket Club – with the World Cup Photo by ECB

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter It was a big day at Horsham Cricket Club last Sunday, attracting a large crowd and significant media attention when Jofra Archer became the first England player to bring the World Cup to his home club. Although it only seemed like yesterday that the exciting 24 year old express bowler and attacking batsman was playing for Horsham, his meteoric rise to fame on cricket’s world stage is truly phenomenal. From playing for the town in the Sussex Premiership, and for Horsham’s friendly Thursday XI, the Barbados born former West Indies Under 19 cricketer played for the county’s 2nd XI, before being called up mid season into Sussex’s first team against the Pakistan tourists at Hove in July 2016. And, after

impressing in that opening game with his seemingly effortless, but productive silky smooth action, he soon became a permanent fixture in the Sussex side before getting a rapid call up for England, for whom he qualified through his father. And, he is now a very hot property in franchise cricket, having represented teams such as Rajistan Royals in the IPL and, in the Aussie Big Bash, Hobart Hurricanes. And, after starring in this season’s Ashes, he has just been selected for the England squad for the two match tour of New Zealand, with Tests starting on November 21st. Jofra Archer arrived at the Horsham Cricket Club question and answer session to the strains of Jerusalem and rousing cheers, with Chris “Shaka” Shambrook as question master. After welcoming Jofra back to Horsham CC, Shaka recalled some of his highlights for

the Club, including a big hundred against Bexhill and lightning bowling against Roffey, and then asked Jofra about the support he had received from his fellow Barbadian, England and Sussex’s Chris Jordan (who had first alerted Sussex to Archer’s talents after facing him in a net session in Barbados, with the assessment that “the sky’s the limit” - borne out by batting and bowling spells of great promise). Jofra told the audience: “Chris is a real supporter, always being there at my various debuts.” What does Jofra love about cricket? “Everything!” From the floor, young cricketer James Gerrard enquired: “Who was your inspiration?” - “The great West Indian players and Kiwi quick Shane Bond.” “What was it like to bowl the nerve-jangling super over In the World Cup Final, especially when it started with

a wide?” Ultra cool Jofra saying: “They needed 15 runs, quite a lot, so I wasn’t too worried!” All in a day’s work, although it came down to New Zealand wanting just two off the final ball, before the run out clinched England’s win by the very tightest of margins. Then, other questions included, what had made him come to England? To which Jofra replied: “I used to come in the summer anyway, and then I had the opportunity to progress when I was at Horsham. I always say to kids, you never know what might happen, so keep playing! I’m very grateful for the chances that I’ve been given.” The hour long session ended with a standing ovation, ahead of a lengthy opportunity for autographs and selfies. This was a very long day for Archer – he arrived at Horsham Cricket Club at 9.30am for many photo

shoots around the ground, and a filmed net session, followed by interviews with the ECB and sponsors, a number of meetings and further interviews, finally departing at 6pm, next day tweeting: “It was great to be back at Horsham CC, kicking off the World Cup tour and answering some aspiring cricketers’ fascinating questions!” Horsham Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall told the District Post: “This was a brilliant day for the Club, over 300 people came and it was wonderful to see the kids playing on the ground and embracing Jofra’s visit so completely.” ITV coverage of the event can be viewed here: https://www.itv. com/news/meridian/2019-10-07/ jofra-archer-returns-to-horsham-cricket-club-with-theworld-cup/
