Continued from front page: Following the conclusion of this year’s Britain’s Got Talent competition, organisers have begun the search for next year’s show and a venue in Horsham has been selected to be one of the places where hopefuls can come to showcase their talents! Last week, Dave Richards, landlord of The Olive Branch in Horsham, met with The District Post to discuss the exciting news. Dave took over running the Hall and Woodhouse pub earlier this year and is no stranger to this sort
of thing; He has previously held auditions for BGT at his pub in Colchester, with 3 entrants making it through to the final stages. Since the auditions in Horsham were announced on social media this week, it has generated thousands of views and prompted many comments, likes and shares. If you, or someone you know, has a talent to share, go along to The Olive Branch, 12 Bishopric, Horsham, on Wednesday 30 October, (under 18s) 5pm - 6.30pm; (18s and over) 6.30pm - 9.30pm.

Keeping your home warmer this winter Horsham District Council is urging local people concerned about paying their energy bills to apply promptly for the Warm Home Discount. The Warm Home Discount is a Government scheme giving qualifying households £140 credit into their electricity accounts. The discount can be applied to energy accounts from 14 October until the end of March 2020. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, explained: “With the colder weather returning, people are turning their heating back on and thoughts turn to heating costs. “Some of our residents may be worried about the cost of their energy bills and the Warm Home Discount can really help with heating costs during the colder months. “There is a limited amount of money available and it can get allocated quickly so I would urge you to apply as soon as you can by contacting your energy supplier”. If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you are part of the ‘core group’ and should receive the Warm Home Discount automatically.
If you’re on a low income you could also meet your energy supplier’s criteria. Pre-payment meters and pay-as-you-go meters are included in the scheme. Park home residents who are billed for their electricity through their park site owner can also apply. The Warm Home Discount is different from the winter fuel payment, which all people of pensionable age receive. To apply for the Warm Homes Discount, contact your energy supplier or apply online via your energy company’s website. Park home residents who have electricity supplied by their site owner should apply online at www.parkhomeswhd.com. More information is available at www.gov.uk/the-warmhome-discount-scheme, or by calling the Warm Home Discount team on 0800 731 0214. The number of energy suppliers offering the Warm Home Discount is growing each year. To view this year’s suppliers of the scheme, please visit: www.gov.uk/ the-warm-home-discountscheme

The Horsham Community Christmas Tree returns
Plans are in place for the popular Carfax Community Christmas Tree to return this year, pride of place outside the entrance to Swan Walk it has been revealed. Following last year’s collective sponsorship from local businesses, an independent provider has stepped forward once again to make sure the ‘Horsham Christmas Tree’ returns and is already receiving support from businesses. As well as the tree, the installations of new Christmas lighting features for Horsham Town Centre have been started earlier this month (week commencing 7 October) by a new contractor Gala Lights. The installations are scheduled to be completed by 14 November, with

the exception of a special children’s light display on the Forum which will be added in early December. This year, there will be additional lighting in Park Place and along the Bishopric stream areas for the first time, together with some exciting new and original elements. Gala’s contract is managed by Horsham District Council on behalf of the Neighbourhood Councils, whose special charge budget funds the Christmas lighting in the town. The new lighting scheme will complement December’s ‘Light Up Horsham’ light projections shows in the Market Square, as part of Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, to make Horsham an even more attractive place to visit over the festive season.
Commenting on the new schemes for the town, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke, said: “The new Christmas lighting will be a real stand out feature for Horsham Town Centre this year and will create a real magnet for visitors, residents and shoppers to come to Horsham over the festive period and enjoy all that Horsham has to offer. “It will also be a real boost to local traders at this key time of year when they are facing such challenging times in the high street. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to come along and enjoy the unique atmosphere that only Horsham can offer.”
MP criticises Barclays for withdrawing Post Office cash facility
Arundel & South Downs MP, Nick Herbert, has strongly criticised Barclays Bank for its decision to prevent its customers from making cash withdrawals at Post Office counters from January, describing the move as “completely unacceptable”. Barclays’ customers have previously been advised to use their local Post Office as an alternative when bank branches have closed, a service which the MP believes is essential. When bank branches began to close in villages, Mr Herbert lobbied to ensure that a full range of banking services could be made available through the Post Offices, an agreement which he says Barclays have now reneged on. Mr Herbert’s Arundel & South Downs constituency has one of the highest percentages of banking network losses. Which! reported a loss of 75 per cent since 2015. In fact, the latest
figure is now far higher, with just one bank branch remaining in the whole constituency, in Storrington, after Lloyds Bank closed in the village last week. All the other villages are now reliant on Post Office services. Mr Herbert said: ”I understand why bank branches were closed, with the rise of internet banking, but businesses, and the elderly especially, still need local banking facilities. “The banking services provided by the Post Offices are now
The banking services provided by the Post Offices are now essential, often the only ones left in our villages essential, often the only ones left in our villages, and banks – including Barclays – should be required to offer a full range of services through them”. The MP plans to raise the issue with Barclays Bank and ministers this week, as well as calling for a Commons debate.

Students from The Weald School visit to Kenya
No need to visit a pay station again! Pay for parking automatically at the new Piries Place Car Park with AutoPay, a new online account service. Simply register for an online account, add a payment card and your vehicle registration, and your payment card will be automatically charged when you leave the car park. Piries Place, Copnall Way, Horsham RH12 1NY.
This summer, an incredible group of students from The Weald School travelled to Kenya to help build safe and permanent classrooms for the local children. ‘Classrooms for Kenya’ is a charity set up by The Weald that has been transforming the lives of children in Kenya for 13 years. The Weald School raise funds for this project, which amount to approximately £20,000 every year. Most of the money is raised as a result of their annual sponsored walk, which all students and most staff participate in. Since 2006, almost 100 classrooms have been built for over 20 different schools. As well as supporting the people and communities in Kenya, staff believe there is huge value for The Weald students too, which can’t be underestimated. Those who choose to travel to Africa behave selflessly in their fundraising, gain a wealth of new skills and experiences and come away from Kenya with memories which will last a lifetime. Mr Neil Dixon, one of the school’s science teachers, detailed the experience: “As the plane touched down in the land that contains the bones of our great ancestors, there was a palpable sense of expectation amongst our large group. Nearly 50 in total, there were a lot of wide eyes and expectant faces looking around the Kenyan landscape. Then the questions began, “What time will we get to the hotel?”, “Will there be wi-fi?” “Where are the buses?” Those of us who had been to Kenya before replied with confidence “We don’t know, we’ll see” or “Not too sure, we’re running on Kenyan time now.” These responses were repeated throughout the trip, until eventually the questions about plans stopped and were replaced by observations about what they were experiencing or their surroundings instead, as they embraced this new culture and way of life. “An uneventful trip up from Nairobi saw us stop to view the wonder that is the Great Rift Valley, cross the Equator and get our first glimpse of the local wildlife in the form or zebras and baboons along the roadside. We passed the wondrous Lake Elementaita and
finally arrived into the welcome arms of Theresa and The Karibuni. “The first week was a blur of travelling to meet the schools we were building at, visiting the schools that were built at last year, visits to the baby orphanage for cuddles and evening entertainments (song battles, taboo, talent shows, Kenyan House Parties) and lots of brick laying! Morale was high with early morning running club pulling in a group of no less than 10 people one day. “The first weekend saw us visit a successful rose farm who export to the U.K. regularly, before an evening meal of traditional food from the Trans-Nzgoia region in the house of Madam Sitti. The students showed their true colours, saying some lovely words about the generosity and welcome they had experienced from everyone since arriving in the region. Sunday saw us all attend church services in different locations, with one of the leaders nearly ending up coming home with more than they had bargained for, before a bit of market shopping and a BBQ. “The second week saw the classrooms really taking on shape as the students started to plan colourful murals to paint as a memento for the primary school children to remember us by. Leaving them was emotional, saying goodbye to the teachers and students who we had got to know, exchanging gifts and an experience that we will all hold in our hearts forever. “The final weekend saw us travel to Mount Elgon, the Nakuru National Safari Park and the Nakuru Lake Lodge for some more traditional tourist activities. Outside our hotel I led the students into the market and the world of haggling! They all came away happy with their purchases, one student particularly happy with getting a rare yellow Kenyan Football shirt for 500 Ksh when all his friends had paid 800 KSh or more. “Our arrival in Nairobi was with mixed emotions. Everyone was looking forward to getting home to see their loved ones, but it was equally clear that some of us had formed a real attachment to this land of our ancestors.”

PJs for pounds to raise money for charity in Horsham
Our students have gone on to make names for themselves in hit West End shows such as Hamilton and Matilda as well as TV series and films. In order for them to fulfil their dreams, they needed to go to college or university to continue their performing arts study. To help them reach their full potential, Razzamataz created a charity called Future Fund, offering scholarships to help with the cost of their study. Looking at the current Razzamataz alumni, the
charity is certainly paying off. Since 2016, Razzamataz Theatre Schools has been offering life-changing scholarships through its charity Future Fund. The scholarships are awarded to Razzamataz students going on to study performing arts at college or university with the franchise network having so far donated more than £22,000. The money is all raised by the Principals, staff, students and their families of each school. An incredible achievement when
you consider the amount of effort that goes into each activity. One of the most popular fundraising events is the annual PJ Day, where children don their best onesie or PJ set and head off into class to meet their teachers also in their lounge gear. This is a really fun day which has far reaching effects for students. Last year, the network raised more than £5,000, enabling the charity to keep offering funding for students. This year, students at Razzamataz Horsham came
to class in exchange for a small donation on October 12. Caroline, Principal of Razzamataz Horsham, explained: “It takes years of dedication, commitment and talent to secure a place at a performing arts college, but it is also hugely expensive. Any help we can give our students is extremely appreciated and can make all the difference.” Since the charity launched, there have been four rounds of auditions. A big part of the process is giving students an opportunity to audition in front of a panel of industry experts. Past judges include dancer and choreographer Robert Hamilton, with West End credits including CATS and FAME and commercial experience dancing with Robbie Williams and Kimberley Wyatt. From The Phantom of the Opera was Victoria Ward, street dancers Fi Silverthorn and Lizzie Gough from ITV’s DANCE DANCE DANCE and even a former Razzamataz student who is now a professional performer currently in Matilda. The judges have already been lined up for 2020 and include Shekinah McFarlane, currently in SIX in the West End and West End choreographer and director Andrew Wright who is a double
Olivier award nominee for best choreography and double What’s On Stage Award winner for best choreography. The PJ day also offers a chance for the teachers to chat to the students about their options when leaving school. Although Razzamataz has many students who go on to perform professionally, many have used their time at Razzamataz to build confidence to help them with their life choices. Razzamataz offers a wide range of performing arts styles for youngsters age 4-18 including current trends that are accessible to children and teenagers. Razzamataz classes consist of dance, drama and singing and the curriculum covers the whole of the performing arts, from classic West End musical theatre to street dance, pop singing and acting for camera. As well as funding through the schools’ own charity, students also get the opportunity to audition to win a year’s scholarship in association with The Stage newspaper. To find out more about the classes, which are held every Saturday at The Forest School, Horsham, contact Caroline Kavanagh on 07523 338099 Email: horsham@ razzamataz.co.uk or visit www. horsham.razzamataz.co.uk
Upsurge in Sussex divorces as petitioners back to square one due to Brexit Around 40% of all marriages in the UK end in divorce and Sussex and Horsham are no exception. If you know 10 married couples you can expect 4 of them to end up divorcing. One of the 10 may well be you. Overall, recent trends show that the total number of divorces has been going down. In part that is due to fewer couples getting married in the first place. But most recently the figures have been affected by those wanting to divorce waiting on
new Government legislation for ‘no-fault’ divorces. According to Nadine Moaddel, head of family law at Horsham solicitors Mancini Legal, the proposals for ending a marriage on a ‘no fault’ basis, whereby those divorcing no longer have to prove adultery, cruelty or live apart for two years were welcomed by campaigners and lawyers alike. ‘The new proposals would not only make divorce easier, and shorten the time it takes to divorce, but remove the whole
emotion of the need to blame one of the parties,’ she said. Earlier this year divorce campaigners were optimistic that the ‘no fault’ divorce bill would be on the statute books by now. However, Boris Johnson’s prorogation of parliament stopped the new law dead in its tracks, keeping those intent on changing their marital status waiting. With everybody seemingly in favour of the new legislation a new ‘no fault’ divorce bill seems inevitable at some stage in the
future. Indeed, a bill was reintroduced as part of the Queen’s Speech in parliament this week. Yet, given the Government’s lack of a majority, there can be no certainty it will come to fruition any time soon. Mancini Legal has recently seen an upsurge in potential divorce cases in Sussex. ‘The old laws are simply out of date and out of touch with modern society,’ says Moaddel. ‘However, if people get to the stage where they can’t wait, they do still work.’
Kingdom of Snow and Ice by Wendy and Michael Ball Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to host Kingdom of Snow and Ice by Wendy and Michael Ball. This wonderful exhibition is filled with beautiful photographs taken by Sussex-based husband and wife, Wendy and Michael Ball. The photographs in the exhibition were taken during a visit to Svalbard located off the coast of Norway, near to the North Pole. Wendy and Michael were part of a group of just 12 photographers to get a place on the Artic trip and felt privileged to have the opportunity to capture their encounters with the amazing animals whose existence is threatened by the actions of humanity. Printed onto aluminium dibond, the photographs are crisp and clear, allowing you to imagine that you are there at the moment the image was captured. Wendy was inspired to take up photography by her father who was, himself, a keen photogra-
pher. After retiring, she had the time to build her skills and begin to take photographs for pleasure. Each image is a record of that moment and has the power to transport her back to the time it was taken. Her keen eye has earned her several Highly Commended awards in the British and Scot-
tish Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards. Wendy has also been shortlisted three times for the International Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards. Michael’s interest in photography stemmed from his love of wildlife and travel, and his photographs serve as poignant
reminders of his visits to other countries. He credits his membership of Steyning Camera Club with honing his technical skills, and encouraging him to continue to develop his craft. Visitors can purchase their own prints of Wendy and Michael’s photographs in the museum
shop, in which a range of items are available for sale, including images produced on aluminium and traditional mounted prints, as well as lovely range of greetings cards starting at just £2.50. The exhibition runs until Saturday 14 December 2019 in Horsham Museum & Art Gallery’s

Collyer’s career boost
Collyer’s recently welcomed Al Gunn (Sales Director, Boost Drinks) to the college for a session with students focussing on employability. Al took part in a lively Q&A with students, focussing on his meteoric career journey and gave candid advice about how students can be employable in the future. Lucy Hargreaves, Collyer’s Employability Programme Coordinator, said: “It was incredibly generous of Al to accept our invitation and give up so much of his valuable time to prepare for, and take part in today’s session”

House sales & buyer enquiries fall in the South East as Brexit impasse deters vendors RICS UK Residential Market Survey, September 2019 · 50% of agents in the South East report a fall in new sales instructions · Buyer enquiries & sales fall as uncertainty deters house purchases · Prices not expected to rise over the coming 12-months Housing sales and buyer demand subdued in the South East last month, as agents reported a fall in new sales instructions, according to the September 2019 RICS UK Residential Market Survey. During the month of September, 35% more agents in the South East saw a fall in agreed sales, with 40% reporting a fall in new buyer enquires and 50% seeing a drop in new instructions (homes coming on to the market to sell). Much of the anecdotal commentary from the survey respondents points to the cause as the heightened economic and political uncertainty, with comments from contributors suggesting that the Brexit impasse is dissuading vendors. Unsurprisingly stock levels on estate agents’ books remains somewhat low, with contributors in the South East
reporting an average of 39 homes to sell on their books last month. As far as the near-term outlook is concerned, agents in the South East do not expect sales to pick-up over the coming three months, but 38% expect to see sales rise over the next 12-months. Turning to prices, 25% of agents in the South East saw house prices fall last month and only 1% expect to see prices increase over the next 12-months. In comparison, there is once again a mixed picture across the UK with negative momentum in London and Yorkshire and Humber, and solid gains in Northern Ireland, Scotland and the North West. In the lettings market, the latest set of results (which form a part of non-seasonally adjusted series) see demand from prospective tenants in the South East rising with 16% of agents in the region reporting an increase in tenant demand (up from 7%). Alongside this, landlord instructions are increasing, and this rise in both demand and supply has led to 19% of respondents expecting to see rents rise over the coming three months.
Local businesses invited to new business venture reveal at Horsham’s Capitol of business plans put together after extensive consultations with businesses and, if approved at ballot, most BIDs are operated as independent social enterprise businesses, run by voluntary boards of directors drawn from the business community. The development of the BID is just getting underway in Horsham, with the vote expected to take place in the autumn of 2020. Horsham District Council has recently appointed national BID experts, Revive & Thrive, to work with them and businesses in the town in order to bring the BID to fruition. Following a decision earlier this year by Horsham District Council to support plans to develop proposals for a new business improvement district (BID) for the town, businesses are being invited to come to a special meeting to find out more about what BIDs are, what a BID could do for Horsham Town Centre and how they can have their say. The meeting, to be held at Horsham’s Capitol on 7 November from 6pm to 8pm, is designed to introduce businesses in Horsham to the opportunities and benefits that a BID could bring, as well as helping them to understand exactly how BIDs work. There are already over 300 BIDs
across the UK, largely operating in town and city centres and they deliver a range of projects that support businesses within them, from marketing and events to direct business support and environmental enhancements. A further key feature of BIDs is the collective voice they provide to business communities in dealing with public sector bodies. BIDs are funded by a small levy, usually between 1% and 2%, charged against the rateable value of commercial business premises and, as they are funded by the businesses that pay into them, businesses vote in a secret ballot on whether or not to adopt them. Comedy Night at Horsham YMCA Saturday November 16 Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA Football Club is staging another of their highly entertaining Comedy Nights, returning by popular demand at their Gorings Mead clubhouse on Saturday November 16, YM Chairman Geoff Foreman telling the District Post: “This will be our fourth Comedy Night, the three previous shows were very well received, attracting excellent support because it is an opportunity to see some amusing, established performers up close at our friendly club at modest cost.” Geoff continued: “Doors open at 7.30pm, with Happy Hour in the
bar until 8.30, following which the bar will remain open until midnight.” The adult show will be compered by Russell Hicks, described as having ‘A sharp wit, and the pessimism of Jack Dee mixed with deadpan aggression.’ Russell is scheduled to introduce the award winning stand-up actor and writer Mark Maier from such television shows as the BBC’s Edinburgh Nights, Channel 4’s Rory Bremner, Who Else and Live at Jongleurs on LWT. Sean Collins, rated ‘first class’ and credited with ‘Perfecting the art of entertaining digression without ever losing a thread’ is also booked to appear, with the bill completed
COMEDY NIGHT
by another very experienced act – Zoe Lyons, a familiar face on Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo (BBC2), and, on BBC1, both The John Bishop Show and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. Geoff Foreman sums up saying: “The great thing about these Comedy Nights is the intimate atmosphere, created by limiting the numbers. Tickets are in demand, so it’s a very good idea to make sure of one while the going is good!” Tickets, at the bargain price of £15, are available from Horsham YMCA Football Club, Gorings Mead – RH13 5BP – (01403) 252689 – e mail – ymcafootballclub@ btconnect.com

Sing-A-Long fun at The Hawth this November On Friday 1 November, The Hawth Crawley will host Sing-along-a The Greatest Showman (2pm) and Sing-a-long-a Bohemian Rhapsody (7.30pm). When these unique interactive Sing-a-long-a shows roll into town as part of a nationwide tour, adding to the portfolio of shows such as Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music, Sing-a-long-a Grease and Sing-a-long-a Rocky Horror Show that are so loved by the public. At 2pm, audiences can Cheer on Hugh Jackman, swoon over Zac Efron and hiss Rebecca Ferguson (…or maybe not) as they experience The Greatest Showman in the greatest way possible - with lyrics on the screen so you can join in as loud as you want. At 7.30pm, you can marvel at Rami Malek’s Oscar winning performance as the great Freddie Mercury, and relive Queen’s
unique Live Aid triumph, as you experience Bohemian Rhapsody in a totally different way – if you’ve not experienced a Sing-a-long-a before – now is the time! Please note this is a screening of the movie not a live stage show. Every performance starts with a Sing-a-long-a host who warms up the audience, trains them how to interact with the movie using the contents of their free props bag and heckle in all the right places, as well as judge the fancy dress competition. So whether you decide to dress up in your best top hat and tails, or come along in your glam rock glitter for the night, you have full permission to sing and dance your heart out! Following a successful Scottish tour in spring 2018, The Occasion Theatre’s The Monster and Mary Shelley comes to The Hawth as part of UK tour. Described by The Wee Review as “Fascinating and hilarious… a wonderfully engaging show”, The Monster and Mary Shelley is an outlandish trip through the mind of one of literature’s most influential imaginations. On a sun-less day at their villa in Switzerland, Lord Byron challenges his guests Percy and Mary Shelley to each write a ghost story. Two days later, Mary, 18 years old and having recently watched her premature baby die,
has a ‘waking dream’ and begins to write a story that will haunt and define her for the rest of her life. Incorporating elements of music hall, melodrama, horror and teenage rebellion with a pulsing contemporary cinematic score, The Monster and Mary Shelley is an atmospheric, moving, and darkly comic exploration of fear and the Gothic Girl who electrified the world. The show is directed by The Occasion Theatre’s Co-Artistic Director Peter Clerke, written by Stewart Ennis and performed by Catherine Gillard. Peter studied at the Ecole
Half Term Fun at Amberley Museum There will be half term activities on a printing theme at Amberley Museum this autumn. This fun drop-in workshop will get the whole family exploring different printmaking techniques. Younger children can explore patterns as they print their own marbled paper. With a 36 acre site and several woodland walks at Amberley, there will be plenty of autumn inspiration all around with the opportunity to create some beautiful leaf prints on fabric. Relief printing will also be available - the lines and shapes carved into the printing block will have no ink on them and the print will reveal the parts that haven‘t been carved. After trying out the activities, visitors will be able to visit one of the most extensive working print shops in the south east and see some of the historic
printing presses in operation. Suitable for all ages with equipment provided, these drop-in workshops will run from 11am1pm and 2-4pm from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November. In addition to these half term activities, the narrow-gauge railway and historic buses will be in operation, together with all the usual exhibition areas in the former chalk and lime quarry. Gift-aided tickets are £15 for adults, £13 for concessions and £8 for children aged 4-15 (under 5s free). Family tickets start at £31. Amberley Museum is open 10am until 4.30pm Wednesdays to Sundays, with last entry one hour before closing. The Limeburners Café serves a variety of sandwiches and snacks with hot food at lunchtime.
Philippe Gaulier in Paris and was a founder member and Co-Artistic Director of benchtours (1991 – 2009), directing or performing in all of their productions. He was also Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Lung Ha’s and spent five years at Edinburgh’s Theatre Workshop. From 2009 – 2015 he was the Artistic Director of Blue Apple Theatre, Winchester, one of Southwest England’s leading learning disability arts organisations. Peter Clerke, director of The Monster and Mary Shelley, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to re-tour this hugely enjoyable show, both to more venues across Scotland and, with the support from ACE, to break new ground in England. Never far from controversy, Shelley, throughout her lifetime, was at the forefront of social change in a turbulent world. Her exploration of fear, in the form of Frankenstein’s Monster, spawned a whole genre of fiction and continues to hold a massive relevance in the present day. We very much look forward to introducing The Monster and Mary Shelley to new audiences across the UK.” Writer Stewart Ennis was a founding member of benchtours (1991 – 2009) and has worked with many Scottish theatre companies. Originally trained as a performer
at East 15 and the Ecole Philipe Gaulier, he was for several years Creative Writing tutor at HMP Shotts. Other plays include, The Dark Room, The Taking of Zena Charbonne, One Straight Line, and Robert Burns Celtic Complex. He has recently begun a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Aberdeen and Curtin University in Western Australia. Vagabond Voices published his first novel, Blessed Assurance, in September 2019. Catherine Gillard plays Mary Shelley. Catherine studied at Sydney Acting School and the Ecole Philippe Gaulier in Paris. She was a founder member and Co-Artistic Director of benchtours (1991 – 2009). Recent projects include Kill Me Now (Melanie Stewart Dance Theatre/Philadelphia Live Arts Festival), Apocalypse, The Taking of Zena Charbonne and YOU ARE HERE! (The Occasion.) Richard Williams composes. Set and costume design is by Ali MacLaurin, with lighting design by Paul Froy. Performance: Tuesday 29 October, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: Available online: www.hawth. co.uk or via The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636. The Occasion Theatre is supported by Creative Scotland. The Monster and Mary Shelley tour is funded by Arts Council England and The Golsoncott Foundation.
A Few Good Men
“You Can’t Handle the Truth!” the memorable line from A Few Good Men, the Broadway smashhit and blockbuster film, which comes to The Hawth Crawley soon. This classic courtroom drama about the trial of two Marines for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine sizzles on stage. A young, inexperienced Navy lawyer, Daniel Kaffee, more interested in softball games, is chosen to represent them. It seems an open-andshut-case: a plea bargain and a week of paperwork. But the men say they were following orders. Soon Kaffee, pressured by the driven Lt. Commander Joanne Galloway and the memory of his late attorney father, finds himself putting the whole Marine Corps on trial in his search for the truth.
The show is brought to The Hawth Studio by Redwood Productions. Founded in 2009 under former name Bootcamp Productions, they have performed many critically acclaimed productions in the UK and USA, with a repertoire spanning a wide range of genres - from political theatre to puppet shows. The Company performs regularly at international arts festivals, including United Solo, New York, Hollywood Fringe, Los Angeles, Capital Fringe, Washington DC, and the Edinburgh Fringe. Performance: Thursday 24 - Saturday 26 October 7.45pm, Saturday 2.30pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley. Tickets: £18 (Discounts: £16), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk

Stone Shiva featuring Jason Falloon comes to The Rec Rooms next Saturday. Shiva the Destroyer?, perhaps, but he’s also the supreme being who creates, protects and transforms the universe. (thank you, Wikipedia!) Is Stone Shiva, a new musical project from local legend Jason Falloon, any or all of these things? Comprising a trio of formidable talent, and initially instigated by the chance meeting with drummer John Coombes, with whom Jason appeared on the same bill in March of this year, the seeds were sown for a bold and ambitious new endeavour of a rock (Stone?) band concentrating on original material, that will grow and develop organically, and as Jason is wont to say “let’s see what happens”. John was an early starter; pub gig debut at 13 and a tour of Holland at 16, back in Ol’ Blighty he soon found a regular gig with Rhythm Method, playing original numbers and then going on to further enhance his repertoire in the blues rock covers band Spittin’ Feathers. Following the demise of the Feathers a new band was formed from their ashes, with a harder R n B sound in the vein of Dr Feelgood and Nine Below Zero. Once again featuring original songs, the Voodoo Sheiks cut a formidable swathe through the southern blues scene, cutting 2 albums and playing such esteemed venues as the 100 Club and Camden Underworld. Joining John to complete the Stone Shiva rhythm section and low-end anchor is none other than Jason’s brother Bob, who
will bring new ingredients, sounds and perspectives to the Stone Shiva dynamic. An academic and alumni of the prestigious Leeds College of Music, during his time there he became an accomplished classical and jazz guitarist. After graduation Bob moved to France and cut his teeth in the extremely tough school of the Parisienne Jazz and Blues clubs, and also spent some time playing in Amsterdam. On returning to the UK Bob picked up the bass and joined Jason and Papa Falloon, forming the legendary folk, blues and country phenomenon The Falloons, whose legacy in Horsham and the South more than speaks for itself. He also demonstrated that he was no slouch as a full on rock player too, wielding formidable bass chops in Jason’s power trio Renegade. Following Papa’s “retirement” and Jason’s departure to Germany, Bob has concentrated on the slightly more serene occupation of teaching, not only at home but also as a well respected tutor at The Windlesham School in Washington. However, it seems you can’t keep an ol’ renegade down (see what I did there!), and he’ll be swinging that bass again, bringing stones to the Stone! Having known Jason since primary school, this scribe was more surprised than most when he said he’d got a new band together. Since returning from a 17-year residence in Germany, where he achieved some success
as the Jason Falloon Band, he’s concentrated on setting up and running his studio near Cranleigh for the last 4 years. Offering not only guitar session work over the internet, he has honed his skills in demo production, mixing and sequencing, providing invaluable and affordable services beyond the pockets of many would-be musicians and songwriters. A band hadn’t really been on the radar. But I suspect the main appeal of this burgeoning new project was the natural way it developed, happening upon a like-minded and committed drummer AND having a uniquely talented brother to throw into the mix, rather than going through the sometimes sterile, always gruelling production-line process of auditioning. And let’s not beat around the bush, this is serious stuff; a new band from Queen’s Roger Taylor’s go-to guitarist for his solo projects, someone who’s shared the stage with Ronnie Wood, Nick Mason, Mike Rutherford and Roger Daltrey (Could someone get a dustpan and brush so I can sweep up those names please?), a guy with his musical roots and heritage in Horsham itself; serious and very exciting! So, back to Shiva and the name, Stone Shiva: Creativity - check; Changing the universe - possibly; Destroying - I certainly hope so! Horsham’s Paul Talbot: World’s Strongest Man 2019, naturally! World’s Stongest Natural Man Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Paul Talbot has won the World’s Strongest Natural Man title, for which, unlike in some other World competitions, contestants are tested to ensure that they are free of drugs and performance enhancers. Winning the event is a major achievement involving a strenuous programme of preparation and, at the two day event in Finland, exceptional results pitted against 32 other strong contenders. Paul qualified by doing well in the Britain’s Strongest Man competition, and on Day 1 in Finland, always against the clock, the contest kicked off with a log lift, 120 kg clean and press, 33 year old Paul managing 6 in a minute, which he’d trained for, his good start taking the lead. Then came a sack carry, again 120 kg, walking as far as possible with the sack held in front, Paul coming second. The last trial, then left Paul 2.5 points clear of the field, but with daunting prospects ahead on Day
2, with other contestants having their own specialities. The next day began with a dead lift, the contestant with the heaviest lift winning, Paul finished third after breaking his personal best record. A side hold followed – holding heavy weights with arms outstretched, Paul finishing
I hope that challenges in the type of tournaments that I compete in will get onto the Olympics agenda fourth to lead by just half a point with just one more opportunity to clinch the title. The last events on both days were particularly demanding – a truck pull, Paul saying: “I won that – playing in the front row for Horsham Rugby Club (where he was Captain) helped me!” and he carried off the prize after winning a load-
ing event, involving a race from the stage to flip a large tyre and then loading three weighty bags back onto the stage, Paul finishing three seconds faster than the second placed competitor. Amazingly, as if he isn’t super fit already, Paul told the District Post: “What I need to do now is to get fit – I’m strong, but not really fit! So, I’ll be working hard at Horsham’s DUAL STRENGTH + Fitness Gym, with circuit training for the rest of this year.” Paul added: “I enjoyed my rugby, but I have always been fascinated by strength sports, and being fit when I stopped playing rugby gave me a head start going into competitions. I hope that challenges in the type of tournaments that I compete in will get onto the Olympics agenda.” Paul relies on sponsorship to help fund his competitive strong man entries, and if his Olympic wish comes true, then there will be nobody more dedicated and committed to succeed than Horsham’s Paul Talbot.
Horsham Cricket Club developing positive regeneration plan
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter
It is no secret that this season was not a happy one for Horsham Cricket Club, with disappointing results on the field culminating in the senior side’s first ever relegation from the Premier League, of which they were a founding member in the early 1970s. That outcome was even more unpalatable because there were several games that could so easily have gone the other way. Horsham has won the league on eight occasions – lastly in 2004 – and the Sussex Cup a record 13 times, including their final win as re-
cently as 2016. They also won the National Cup at Lord’s in 2005. And, having contributed a seemingly endless ongoing, unique conveyor belt of players to the county side, the Club has always been a hugely respected leading light in Sussex cricket, hosting county and many representative matches. It is determined to restore its pre-eminent position in Sussex cricket and beyond, and with that firm intention, the Club has just held an open meeting for members to agree a positive way forward. Cricket Chairman Richard Marshall opened the meeting, acknowledging that the Club is not currently where it wants to be,
before handing over for a presentation from Cricket Manager Ed Clark and first team regular James Brehaut, who had jointly conducted a survey to obtain the views of playing members. Discussion focused on training, coaching, social events, communication, sponsorship, player commitment and recruitment and the question of whether to bring in an overseas player for next season. Various volunteer roles were outlined, with a request for members to step up if they are interested in filling a vacancy. Horsham 1st XI has a good, strong nucleus of players including home grown Sussex professionals Will Beer, Tom Haines
and Tom Clark. Current Captain Michael Thornely – who had an excellent season with the bat – also has extensive county cricket experience, all rounder Nick Oxley is an MCC Young Professional called in for England 12th man duties, and Sussex and England Lions’ George Garton also plays for Horsham, as did Jofra Archer before his Sussex and national selection. In addition to other talented senior members of the side there is also exciting fresh young talent emerging, including Joe Willis and James Brehaut, James telling the District Post: “Horsham has a lovely ground, great facilities and an excellent wicket (described by the umpires
as ‘Test standard’ when Sussex last played at the Club). Also, what I love is being able to play with and learn from the Sussex pros, there is great development potential for young cricketers here.” Ed Clark added: “Horsham is a fast growing town and we’d be delighted to hear from any cricketers who’ve moved into the district and are looking for a new club – edclark2010@gmail.com”. There are two grounds at Horsham Cricket Club’s picturesque family friendly HQ, with three senior sides, Women’s league cricket, a social Thursday X1 and playing opportunities for boys and girls from Under 8 to U19 age groups.

Horsham grab a draw after trailing by three goals Saturday October 12 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham Men’s 1st XI 3 3 Purley Walcountians Hockey Martin Read-Sports Reporter After two difficult weeks this was a much better performance from Horsham – much, much better, especially in the second half when they fought back brilliantly to grab a well deserved point, which had seemed highly unlikely at the interval. Poor defending left Horsham trailing 0-3 at the half way stage, Purley’s third goal coming when space in the D allowed an unstoppable close quarter back hander. At that stage Horsham looked a beaten side, but to their great credit they resumed in fighting mode, kept running, and defended and attacked with far greater intent, putting Purley under real strain. Had the game gone on for another few minutes then Horsham could well have pulled off their first win of the season. They started the second half with two short corners and although neither was
converted they were mounting some good team moves in passages of very encouraging play. And, before long Solomon Woodhall had the ball in the net, ahead of a solo run from Joey Humphreys, enabling him to offload to Toby Fraser, who made no mistake, bringing the score to 2-3. Next came the goal of the match when Humphreys broke through on the right again, ending up prostrate while retaining sufficient control, and presence of mind, to crash the ball in to level the score, worrying Purley more than a little. A disputed last gasp Purley short corner jangled the nerves, but Horsham kept it out. Although the result was a fair one considering Purley’s first half dominance, it was a great outcome for Horsham, almost feeling like a win. Horsham are one of four teams at the foot of the table with a point apiece, but their second half performance against Purley will give them a big confidence boost in the lead up to Saturday’s trip across the Surrey border to take on fourth placed Old Georgians, who have two wins from three starts thus far this season.

Single goal of scrappy game sinks Horsham Saturday October 12 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Canterbury 2nd XI 1 0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read-Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies’ 160 mile round trip to east Kent’s Polo Farm Sports Centre on the outskirts of Canterbury ended in disappointment, all the more so because this was a game that they had targeted to win after Canterbury – now in the penultimate berth – had lost the first two games of their campaign. In miserably damp, dull conditions the hosts somehow scrambled in an early goal, with Horsham barely believing that the ball had found the
net. That concluded the scoring, Horsham’s Fran Crossley telling the District Post: “After being with Brighton last season its great to be back playing for Horsham, but this wasn’t really a very enjoyable game. It was a bit agricultural with quite a lot of stick swishing from the opposition! We had plenty of attacks, but its goals that count and we just couldn’t score, so it was a frustrating day out for us.” On Saturday Horsham Ladies return to Broadbridge Heath for a 2pm push back against third-placed Southgate. At this very early stage of the season Horsham are 7th, while Wimbledon, with three wins from the same number of starts, are top with Bromley & Beckenham second.

IDentilam Colts Cricket League Awards night
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter
A full house enjoyed the annual IDentilam Colts Cricket League awards evening at Southwater Cricket Club. League Secretary Peter Garland announced the awards, which were presented by Horsham, Sussex and England Under 19 international Tom Clark, Peter saying: “It is highly appropriate that Tom is presenting the awards tonight because he is a past Colts award winner, and his subsequent achievements prove that with hard work and dedication there is a pathway to successful entry into professional cricket. I hope that some of the boys and girls winning awards today will go on to do the same.” Horsham Cricket Club’s David Horsman, Founding Chairman of the IDentilam Colts League, assisted at the ceremony with Horsham’s Polly Clark, David telling us: “The League came into being in a meeting in my dining room in 1987!” Calling up each award winner Peter Garland congratulated them, outlining what milestone had been attained to qualify. He then thanked IDentilam for their sponsorship of the whole of youth cricket in Sussex before prais-
ing the coaches, organisers and parents for persevering despite the variable weather. And, he gave special thanks to Horsham’s Kate Huddlestone for easing his burden by taking over as Fixtures Secretary and was very pleased to recognise Kate’s contribution by presenting her with a special award. Principal local winners: U9 Batting - George Thorne & Elizabeth New, both of Southwater CC U9 Bowling – George Thorne, Southwater U10 East Bowling – Daniel Peskett, Southwater U10 West - Batting – Luke Seaton, West Chiltington U10 West – Bowling – Ben Watson, Horsham Trinity & Oscar Knowles, Rudgwick U12 East Bowling – Maxwell Bartlett, Horsham U12 West Batting – Ran Dawson, Wisborough Green U12 West Bowling - Charles Duane-Nguyen, Steyning U13 Batting - Freddie Heyward, Billingshurst U13 Bowling – Jamie Smith, Billingshurst U16 Batting – Johnny Mills, Southwater U16 Bowling – James Arnold, Horsham Trinity
Local winners of the individual leagues and total medals won were: Southwater U9 & U10 E + U13 Indoor winner – 35 medals West Chiltington U10 & U14 W + Six-a-Side Plate – 30 medals Billingshurst U13 – 15 medals Roffey – U15 winners – 8 medals The Indoor Cricket League starts this Sunday at Tanbridge School, organiser Peter Garland saying: “We need two more teams at U13 level and another for Friday evenings at U15, if any club would like to participate then please contact me without delay – thegarlands@ codmorehouse.co.uk Speaking after his first ambassadorial engagement for Sussex, recent county debutant Tom Clark told the District Post: “I’m looking forward to playing in the England U19 Tri Series in Antigua and I’m very pleased to be following the same county cricket path as Horsham’s Tom Haines and Will Beer and can have the benefit of their experience.” Tom Haines also won a Sussex Colts award, and like Tom Clark, Haines is an upper order left hand bat, and useful right arm medium pace bowler, scoring his maiden century for Sussex at Arundel last year
Horsham go fifth with another strong win Saturday October 12 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 38 22 Dartfordians Rugby Martin Read-Sports Reporter Horsham notched up another win – this time against regular, but struggling, winless opponents Dartfordians. This was the Green & Whites’ fourth success from six starts in the rarefied atmosphere of their new higher league, and they got off to the best possible start when Frankie Smith crossed the line in the opening minute, returning Tom Johnson completing the conversion. After the visitors had got on the board with a penalty, Smith was involved with another attacking move, enabling Mike Tredgett to complete a try, Johnson kicking well again. Then, on the half hour mark, Johnson and Jordan Bell combined to put Smith through for
another five points, Johnson adding two more before he burst through for Horsham’s fourth try earning a bonus point, Although Dartfordians had retaliated to Smith’s try with one of their own, albeit unconverted, courtesy of Johnson’s accurate boot, Horsham had a handsome lead, 28-8, at the break. Dartfordians came more into the game in the second half, soon finalising a series of forays with a converted try, but it was too little, too late, especially when Josh Sudder pulled off a debut try, Johnson again adding the extras from the touchline in relentless rain, and subsequently kicking a long range penalty to finish with a personal match tally of 18 points. To their credit Dartfordians kept plugging away, culminating in a late converted try, but that was of scant consolation, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker saying: “A bonus point win in wet conditions is a great result, especially as we had a
new front and back row. We dominated territory in the first half, and in the second we asked for composure in the face of an anticipated Darts fight back and that was delivered, weathering a strong attacking surge for 20 minutes, allowing us to re-assert control before closing the game down comfortably. The forwards were excellent today and Tom Johnson’s welcome return gave us a faultless kicking display. Capping his recent excellent run of form Jordan Smith was Man of the Match and it was pleasing to see three impressive performances from Josh Sudder, stepping up into senior rugby, Josh Earle in his first starting engagement and Frankie Smith’s debut tries.” On Saturday Horsham travel to 9th-placed Thurrock, Nick Stocker adding: “With senior players returning we’ll have some interesting selection headaches, exactly what we need to keep pushing performances!”

Horsham down to third in unaccustomed defeat
Photo byJohn Lines
Saturday October 12 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Bishop’s Stortford 2 0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In a game targeted for a win, Horsham slipped from first to third as a result of an unexpected defeat on their visit to Bishop’s Stortford’s Woodside Park, the lower table hosts not having tasted victory for almost two months. Bishop’s Stortford had suffered
a substantial, 4-1, upset against Potters Bar in their previous match, but bounced back against the Hornets with two second half goals. Each side had first half opportunities – Horsham through Chris Smith and then, twice, from Rob O’Toole, but these were either safely gathered by home keeper Fred Burbidge, or went well adrift. Earlier, Bishop’s Stortford’s Shomari Barnwell had fired high, and later he tested George Bentley in the Horsham goal. Towards the end of the first half Barnwell and Mark Haines both headed waywardly,
before a Charlie Harris strike was foiled by the woodwork and he was unable to maximise the rebound. Resuming goal-less the second half began quietly, but both sides had further chances, Horsham’s Harris’ distant attempt going too aerial ahead of challenging Burbidge from a set piece. Then, the upright again thwarted the Hornets’, Kieron Pamment suffering. Barnwell was also in action, but was denied by Bentley. With luck running against Horsham, Chiedozie gave BS the lead when he headed home a corner. A second goal went begging when the lively Barnwell was just unable to latch onto Ryan Charles’ supply, however Charles made amends when he pinpointed Mycroft-Edwards, who ran through to get the ball past Bentley. Time was fast evaporating, although Horsham did still manage to conjure up two more possibilities, Burbidge safely negotiating attempts from Zack Newton and Pamment. It wasn’t Horsham day, with the 2-0 defeat pushing them down to third following unfavourable results elsewhere. Folkestone take over as league leaders, two points ahead of Horsham, with Hornchurch second. With Horsham looking to regain the top spot, two home league games follow in quick succession – on Saturday they play 16th-placed Mertsham, before Cray Wanderers (10th) visit on Tuesday evening (22nd).
Horsham Sparrows’ going from strength to strength
Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Sparrows’ Secretary Simon King is delighted with the achievements of the Club’s U12 boys team, telling the District Post: “They play in Horsham Park and continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 3-0 win against a strong Hurtspierpoint Wolves team. Goals from Noah, Jaiden, and Issac sealed the victory which took the team to their 4th game in a row without loss.” Horsham Sparrows FC is the town’s only FA Community Charter Club and was a founding member of the local boys & Sussex Women’s football leagues. The club now boasts an incredible 20 squads

including boys, girls and women’s teams, with age groups ranging from under 8s through to adult. Senior Sparrows’ teams play at Horsham YMCA’s Family Lawyers Stadium at Gorings Mead, installing an even richer diversity of football at YMCA, and strengthening the partnership between two of Horsham’s best recognised clubs. Horsham YMCA has been at their Gorings Mead ground for 90 years and the Sparrows have celebrated their own golden anniversary, so there is a wealth of successful experience on hand, providing a great opportunity for more players and teams to enjoy the superb facilities that Horsham YMCA FC has to offer. Links between the two clubs
were forged several years ago, and a number of events have been organised, including the hugely successful YM day, when senior boys’ teams from Horsham Sparrows invite friendly opposition to play in mini round robin tournaments at YMCA. Horsham Sparrows’ Simon King is full of enthusiasm for the future saying: “This is a great opportunity for our players to enjoy the excellent YMCA pitch and clubhouse. We’ve always had a great affinity with our friends at YM and, both clubs have worked hard to put everything in place - we’re looking forward to welcoming teams from across the Horsham district and the wider Sussex area!” He added “Following the success of the Lionesses at the Women’s World Cup we’ve seen a steady rise in the number of girls and women wanting to play football, and to have a venue such as YMCA gives a great local opportunity for both female players and spectators alike.” The Sparrows’ under 17s team plays at YM on alternate Sunday mornings, and are coached by former YM Club Captain Daryn Benn. Both squads are always pleased to welcome potential new players, so anyone interested in participating is invited to do so through the club’s website - www. horshamsparrows.co.uk In their inaugural game at YMCA, Horsham Sparrows Women thoroughly enjoyed their outing against their counterparts from Rustington FC – the end to end game saw the hosts run out 5-2 winners with both teams relishing the experience of playing on YM’s great surface.
Heath soldier on despite continuing adversity Saturday October 5 Southern Combination League Premier Division Steyning Town 3 1 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This game started badly for Broadbridge Heath when their defenders and supporters were mystified when Steyning were awarded a goal in the third minute after Tiago Andrade’s strike had rebounded from the crossbar to Heath keeper Alfie Hadfield. And, it soon got even worse when, five minutes later, Hadfield was red carded after he had rushed out to block a through ball, only to crash into former Heath man Andrade. Then, Heath’s woes were compounded when right back Rob Godfrey limped off with a hamstring injury. And, that it was clearly not Heath’s day was then underlined when Steyning were given a corner when a throw in was anticipated - salt being rubbed into the wound when Grant Radmore got the ball into the net past stand in keeper Alfie Jones, leaving Heath aggrieved that a second highly debatable ruling had culminated in a two goal deficit. Heath kept pushing, but home keeper Ben Rose kept out a wave of attacks from Lee Carney, Max Howell, George Cousins, and, especially Tim Cook, who was just unable to latch onto Cousin’s supply. Yet, with Heath dominating, Sabino burst through on the break with Steyning’s third goal just before the interval. On the resumption recent recruit
Mitchell Bromage, went in goal for Heath, with Jones taking over Godfrey’s position and Heath pressed hard, onrushing Howell testing Rose in the home goal, whose attempted block ended with Cook, who made no mistake, gettting the Bears onto the score sheet. With plenty of ball, Heath were putting Steyning under real pressure, Cousins, Howell and Renato Carvalho all drawing good saves from Rose. Bromage, too, had to be at his best to keep the hosts at bay, the game, though finished with Steyning 3-1 victors, Heath earning praise from both Manager Steve Painter and the opposition for battling against adversity with ten men. Heath are now 10th, with Steyning 5th On Saturday Heath return home to welcome Crawley Down Gatwick for a re-match in the RUR Charity Cup, the original game having been abandoned 2-2 when the floodlights failed on September 17th. At the game, Heath are pleased to support Baby Loss Awareness Week, the event commemorating the lives of babies who died during pregnancy, at or soon after birth and in infancy. Baby Loss Awareness Week is a collaboration between charities and organisations working together for change and tangible improvements in policy, research, bereavement care and support available for anyone affected by the death of a baby at any stage. Heath’s clubhouse will be illuminated in pink and blue and visitors are invited to wear these colours to support the eminently worthy cause, for which a collection will be taken.
BBH go through in RUR Cup re-match Saturday October 12 – Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup – Round 2 Broadbridge Heath 2 1 Crawley Down Gatwick Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This game was the re-match following the abandonment of September’s original encounter, when the floodlights failed with the score 2-2. This time there was persistent rain, but the pitch held up extremely well despite days of deluges. And, last Saturday Broadbridge Heath was the clear winner, although Crawley Down Gatwick came more into the game in the second half. Josh Tuck got Heath off on the right track with an early goal. Wave after wave of Heath attacks followed, with CDG’s back line keeping the hosts at bay. CDG goalkeeper Andy Greaves was not afraid to rush out and this was his undoing when he missed the ball, Jamie Taylor tapping in from close quarters to give Heath a two goal cushion. Heath kept pressing and was unlucky not to go three ahead, only for two reaction saves by Greaves and the woodwork to deny them. In the interval CDG praised the efficiency of Heath’s defence, which was to be tested more after the break. Resuming, CDG looked livelier and they mounted some promising-looking attacks, which
eventually paid off towards the mid point of the second half when the ball was headed off for a corner and then partially cleared, but Michael Belli finished well with Heath keeper Mitchell Bromage unsighted. The visitors were coming more into the game, but when action switched to the other end Tim Cook’s strike was palmed off for a corner with Greaves at full stretch, another Heath corner followed, the first headed just wide. Then, two players went for the ball in the Heath penalty area and floored each other with the ball going off. The ref pointed to the spot and after complaints from Heath and their supporters he consulted his assistant at some length before confirming his decision. Nick Sullivan stepped up and made good connection with the ball, but Bromage dived low to his left to block, the ball subsequently going off for a corner. Heath then had a late golden opportunity to put the game to bed when young sub Archie Goddard broke through on a solo run down the right flank, but he could only fire across the goal. The final whistle heralded Heath’s 2-1 win, the same score as when the teams met in the league at CDG’s Hophurst Lane Centre on the late August Bank Holiday. On Saturday Broadbridge Heath revert to league action when they welcome current runner up Peacehaven & Telscombe to the Countryside Stadium
