Novartis site gets green light martin read

Reporter

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

An update on plans for the land north of Horsham site will be shared with the local community at drop-in events this November, Legal & General announced on 24 October. The site – which has planning permission for 2,750 homes, 500,000 sq ft of new employment space, an education campus and sports hub, along with new pedestrian, cycle and road connections – was acquired by Legal & General from Liberty Property Trust in December last year. The drop-in events will give the community a chance to meet the Legal & General development team, find out more about what is currently happening on the site and what is planned for the coming months. The events will take place on Tuesday 5 November (2pm – 8pm) and Saturday 9 November (10am – 4pm) at The Holbrook Club, North Heath Lane, Horsham, West Sussex, RH12 5PJ. Earlier this month, initial preparation works began on site ahead of the construction of a new roundabout where the A264 meets Rusper Road. The improved roundabout is key to the delivery of the new Bohunt Horsham School, which is expected to open in September 2021. At the events, Legal & General will update the community on the next stage of the new roundabout works and present proposed changes to the approved plans for Rusper Road north of the new roundabout. Legal & General will also be giving local people the opportunity to help shape future

plans for the local centre, priorities for the sports hub, and how green spaces are designed and used. The events will also provide an opportunity for residents to find out about the North Horsham Community Land Trust, an initiative being supported by North Horsham Parish Council working with local residents. Representatives of the Community Land Trust working group will be at the events to explain the initiative, potential benefits for the community and how local residents can get involved. Sebastian Balcombe at Legal & General said: “Since acquiring the site late last year, we have been working hard to review the approved plans and consider whether improvements can be made. “We’re very keen to discuss our plans with the community and ask local people how we can support local needs. Legal & General is committed to creating sustainable communities that deliver social and economic value to local areas. These events are the first stage in a long-term dialogue with the local community and we look forward to working together to support the future of Horsham.” For anyone who isn’t able to attend the events, more information will be available to view at www.landnorthofhorsham.co.uk from 6 November. The Legal & General development team can also be contacted on 020 7323 3544 or via email at info@landnorthofhorsham.co.uk

Horsham schools receive major funding uplift All schools in the Horsham area are receiving an increase in funding following the recent Comprehensive Spending Review announcement, including some significant per school increases. The Government introduced the current National Fair Funding Formula, which they believe to be a fairer and more transparent system “and, for example, provides extra support to children who have a difficult start in life or speak English as a second language.” Both on its creation and, subsequently, Jeremy has always been especially focussed on ensuring that the formula’s ‘per pupil funding baseline’, on which additional per pupil funding is based, is appropriately set – and campaigned for this to be lifted. Increasing the baseline per pupil funding has proved the most effective practical way of increasing support for local schools, all of which operate in an area of relatively high costs. The national settlement announced this month is worth £14bn and will be delivered across three years, representing the largest funding boost in a decade. This is in addition

to the £1.5bn per year extra the Government is providing to help fund additional pension costs for teachers. Taken together, this means that by 2022-23 the Government will be providing an additional £150m a week to our schools across England. Every

I am very pleased with the local results, as I am with the successful launch this autumn of two new local schools secondary school will receive at least £5,000 per pupil and every primary school will receive at least £3750 per pupil next year, rising to £4,000 per pupil the following year. An additional investment of £780m will be made next year to support children with special educational needs and disabilities – an increase of over 12% compared to 2019-20. All local secondary schools

benefitted from the initial introduction of the NFF and will receive further increases. Among primary schools : Crawley Down, Heron Way and Shipley, Billingshurst, Greenway Academy, Holbrook, North Heath Community School, Rusper, Southwater Infant Academy, Southwater Junior Academy and St Peter’s (Ardingly) are all receiving particularly significant increases over time. Commenting on this new announcement, Jeremy Quin MP said: “98 per cent of our local schools are rated “Good” or “Outstanding” and we are proud of the results they produce across the board - not just academically. I am delighted that, as a result of this announcement, Horsham schools are receiving greater funding, including some significant increases. “Our campaign to increase the baseline per pupil funding - which is of primary importance to our local schools - has been the focus of the Government’s school funding increases. I am very pleased with the local results, as I am with the successful launch this autumn of two new local schools – Bohunt and Kilnwood Vale Primary.”

New Leader of West Sussex County Council elected

Paul Marshall has been elected as the new leader of West Sussex County Council at a meeting of Full Council last week (Friday, 18 October). Paul said: “I am very proud and honoured to be the new leader of West Sussex County Council at this important time for our residents and staff. “My focus will be on delivering really good services to the residents of West Sussex. “In particular, my priorities are to make sure we make muchneeded and significant improvements to our Children’s Services and our Fire and Rescue Service, and meet the growing demands on adult services.” He succeeds Louise Goldsmith, who stood down earlier this month and Paul acknowledged her work as leader during nearly ten years in the role. Paul has represented the

Storrington division as a county councillor since 2017 and has held the position of Cabinet Member for Children and Young People since August 2018. He has also been a Horsham District Councillor since 2015. Paul will, in the interim, retain the statutory responsibility for Children’s Services, including schools. He will support Jacquie Russell (East Grinstead South & Ashurst Wood) in her new role of Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, which covers social care and support services for children. Nigel Jupp (Southwater and Nuthurst) will take up the role of Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, supporting Paul with the range of functions related to schools and education. Duncan Crow (Tilgate and Furnace Green) is the new Cabinet Member for Fire and Rescue and Communities. All other Cabinet positions remain unchanged. Paul’s background is in retail and he has held a number of positions at director level covering a range of areas including marketing, supply chain and strategic growth. He lives in Washington with his wife and two daughters. He added: “My vision is to lead an authority that is open with the public about how it works, that welcomes scrutiny from all politicians and partners, and that creates a positive working environment for its staff. “I look forward to the challenges ahead with determination and optimism, and in a spirit of collaboration.”

The very First Armistice/Remembrance Day In November 1919, the nation and Horsham Town had to work out how, or if, it was going to commemorate the end of The Great War. There was no precedence, Peace had been celebrated with Peace Day in July, when a wood and plaster cenotaph was erected in Whitehall for the Peace Day Celebration, enabling servicemen to march past in remembrance. What wasn’t expected was the laying of wreaths by the public, nor its universal appeal, which led to a permanent Cenotaph. Now, on the anniversary of the armistice, what? Every village and town in the country will have their own account; What follows is for Horsham, and is drawn from the local press. The Horsham Parish Newsletter set the scene in their November issue, stating: “The Anniversary of Armistice Day (Tuesday, Nov. 11th). We propose to keep this day - S. Martin’s Day - as a regular anniversary. We believe that everybody will be glad to remember the desire of their hearts to sing praises to God on this day 12 months ago. For once we forgot to conceal or be shy about our religion… At 12 0 clock we shall have, as last year, a short Service of praise and thanksgiving; at 7.45 p.m. we shall have a Service, as last year, at which Archdeacon Southwell, C.M.G., an Assistant Chaplain General in the War … will be preacher…” Nationally, it was decided, following a suggestion from an Australian journalist, that there should be a two minutes silence. So it was on 7 November 1919 King George V issued a proclamation calling for “All locomotion should cease, so that, in perfect stillness, the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead.” In December, the Horsham Parish Newsletter issue contained a deeply felt account by Ralph Frost of “The Great Silence in London”. The extract below gives just a flavour of the feeling of the event: “In the bitterest moments of Christ’s life, it was His custom to leave His disciples, and seek solitude and silence. This was the underlying thought that prompted the King’s wish that his people should commune for a brief moment with their own souls, and so draw nearer to things eternal…There were no cynics and no scoffers. In this great city, with its teeming millions, there

were none who did not do reverent homage to those who have paid in full the measure of their love and patriotism…” As for Horsham town itself, the County Times for 15 November[1] carried the following report. “Armistice Day anniversary was reverently celebrated at Horsham, first by two minutes pause at the eleventh hour, and subsequently by church and chapel services. The Carfax cenotaph was the centre of a touching ceremonial. immediately the clock ceased striking four buglers from the Royal Engineers at Roffey Camp (with a corporal in charge) sounded the “Stand Fast” for the prescribed two minutes there was an impressive silence, except for the prolonged whistling in the distance of a train on the railway. Men stood reverently with bared heads, and there was a remarkable absence of all movement. Then the buglers sounded the “Last Post,” and the Rev. Godfrey Wells, assistant curate at the Parish church, who stood on the left of the Cenotaph, led the gathering in the Lord’s Prayer, followed by prayers for the afflicted, “especially the widows and orphans of the fallen,” and or comrades who died that we might live”. Some 54 years later at Henfield, a unique memento of Remembrance was given to the local Royal British Legion who, in turn, gave it to the Parish Council in 1976, who gave it to St Peter’s Church. The nation decided to have a memorial to the Unknown Soldier, a focal point to remember the thousands of First World War men who died anonymously on the Western Front. One body from each of the four great battle sites, the Somme, Arras, the Aisne and Ypres, was exhumed and draped with a Union Jack; the flag that covered the stretchered body, was too small to cover the coffin as it sailed from Belgium to England. Therefore, the smaller flags were left behind. It is the flag that covered the Unknown Soldier from Ypres that has been presented to the village of Henfield and used in their Remembrance commemorations. It also featured as item number 18 in the newly published Heritage of the Horsham District in 100 Objects book, currently available at Horsham Museum. As for Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, after WWII, Armistice Day became Remembrance Day. Images: Copyright Ian Nicol/Horsham Museum & Art Gallery

Tea and Cookies to raise money in support of National Baby Loss Awareness Week Last Tuesday, residents of Wisborough Green joined local funeral directors Dandelion Farewells, to support National Baby Loss Awareness Week and enjoy fresh cookies, cakes and refreshments at the unique Cookie Bar Bus on the village green. This special local community event hosted by Dandelion Farewells for the third year running, was raising awareness of, and providing access to, open conversations regarding the issues surrounding baby loss in the UK. And whilst sitting in the glorious sunshine, it was easy to see why it works so well. Judith Dandy, owner of Dandelion Farewells said “So many people carry a story, but do not often have the opportunity to open up, or find the space to discuss the loss of a baby or child. Dandelion Dreams is the very special and individual support service we provide in these sensitive circumstances; whether that be in the form of practical assistance or just gentle guidance and a sympathetic ear when needed.” She continued, “We

work in conjunction with many local support services and also have a comprehensive selection of books and information sources, so that we can quietly assist in every way we can. We know that the Cookie Bar Bus and this relaxed setting allows people to feel secure should they wish to talk, and every penny raised from the refreshments is generously donated by the Cookie Bar Bus to help our chosen charities.” Both younger and older visitors attended the event, with some having a specific recent occasion they wished to commemorate by placing a named heart on the remembrance tree. Others preferred to take a candle so that they could join families across the world, lighting their candle in the evening to remember babies that had died too soon, as part of the global ‘Wave of Light’ activities. But for some this was the first chance they had really had to openly talk through the loss of a pregnancy or stillbirth, or the death of a baby or child; with memories for siblings, friends, sons or daughters being over 40

years old and from when ‘these things were just not spoken about.’ One gentleman summed up the event perfectly by saying “The care that Dandelion Farewells provides to support our community is very special. They are always on hand to talk, share memories and ease the loss, whilst helping so many families to understand and recognize it as a step in moving through the grieving process.” £1,480 has been raised with further donations still to be received. This will be now be divided between local bereavement support and national research charities to further help those affected by the loss of a child.

Light and Laughter by Cherry Parsons

Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to be hosting a new exhibition, “Light and Laughter” by local artist Cherry Parsons. Cherry was born and bred in Horsham. In her youth she dreamt of studying dress design at college, but for various reasons wasn’t able to go. Cherry went on to channel her creative passion into her own boutique before becoming a fulltime mother. Cherry’s dream of higher education became a reality when she accompanied her eldest daughter to her interview at Northbrook College, Horsham. After a meeting with the Head Tutor Cherry was offered a place to study alongside her delighted daughter. Cherry has exhibited work through The Farlington Art Group run by Rosalind Sprey. She also accepts commissions and has produced artworks which are displayed at Sedgwick House and Springfield

Park. Having joined Horsham Artists Open Studios, Cherry has also held successful Open House exhibitions. Working mainly in acrylics or oils, Cherry enjoys creating portraiture, seascapes and landscapes. Her work incorporates light, reflections, water or humour. The amusing new range of artworks that capture characterful seagulls provide Cherry with a mental rest from the concentration of her other artwork and make her smile whenever she sees them. Light and Laughter will run from 8 November 2019 to 3 January 2020 in the Watercolour Gallery. Cherry’s original artworks, mounted prints, and a range of greetings card will be available to purchase for the duration of the exhibition. Horsham care home helps prevent fraud in the community with free advice event A care home in Horsham is inviting the local community to a free event to learn more about how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe from scams and fraud. On Tuesday 5 November, from 11am-1pm, the Care UK team at Skylark House, on St Marks Lane, will open the home’s doors for the ‘scam and fraud awareness’ event. Roy Booth, from Care UK, will be on hand to deliver an informative session on a wide range of different scams, including expert information on how to spot and report them, and protect yourself or a loved one. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, refreshments and an opportunity to meet the team at Skylark House, as well as the opportunity to take a closer look at the care home. Home manager at Skylark House, Devendra Lallchand, said: “Sharing professional knowledge, insight and experiences on scam prevention can make a real difference to the everyday lives of older people and loved ones who may care for them. It’s the first time we’ve held an event on this subject, but we feel it’s very topical and relevant in today’s technological society, and our free advice events always prove to be popular occasions for the local community.

“It’s been estimated that around £10 billion is lost each year in the UK by victims of scams, and older, more vulnerable people are often the target*. Age UK reported that 43 percent of older people, almost five million people aged over 65, have been targeted by scammers in the past – with those living with dementia being at particular risk. “It’s incredibly important to raise awareness of this issue, and we’re delighted to welcome Roy Booth to join us to provide important and professional guidance in this area. We hope local people will take the opportunity

to benefit from his expertise.” Skylark House has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite and palliative care. Younger visitors have the chance to become ‘Junior Trail Detectives’ by completing the

trail, finding six hidden rubbing plates and completing the quizzes and puzzles all aimed at providing a fun introduction to the life on the Reserve. The Trail is populated with “Did you know?” facts, rubbing panels to create nature pictures and there are activity sheets with quizzes, wildlife word searches and maths conundrums. Additionally, as part of the Trail there are two special new sculptures: the Bat Bothy and the TriHelix, which were both created as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 ‘Field Notes from Warnham’ project, leaving a lasting legacy of the year of celebra-

tions. On Friday 1 November, you are invited to come along with your families from 1.15pm to 2pm and 2.30pm to 3.15pm when a special woodland celebrity visitor will be on site to meet you. Commenting on the new addition to all the activities on offer at the Reserve, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “I am delighted that we have now opened the new Discovery Trail. “We very much want to encourage visitors old and new, of all ages, to come to the Reserve and discover not only the wide variety

of wildlife, flora and fauna that thrive in the wetlands, but also appreciate the important part that this land has played in shaping our District, from its historical links to the iron industry, to its modern day home for Herons and Kingfishers. “Our aim is to inspire the next generation to learn about the Reserve and how to protect it.” The Discovery Trail forms an initial part of a larger project – the Discovery Hub Project, which is being partly funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development who support investment in public recreational infrastructure.

Jeepers Creepers: Take care of your peepers this Halloween

Witches, warlocks, black cats and devils are being urged to make sure they look after their eyes this Halloween by the Specsavers stores in Sussex. Specsavers want to ensure fancy dress revellers don’t play a trick on their eyes through costume lenses and make-up and instead treat them to the care they deserve this October 31st. While novelty contact lenses may seem like a perfect costume addition, they can cause damage to eyes – especially if they are not handled correctly. Not knowing how to wear or care for them can also result in numerous minor eye conditions - such as red eye, infections and scratches - as well as more serious complications that can, in severe cases, lead to sight loss. Dr Nigel Best, Specsavers clinical spokesperson, explained: “Halloween contact lenses have become incredibly popular in recent years; however, consumers

often are not aware of the risks associated with misusing contact lenses. “In particular, if a wearer hasn’t had a proper consultation with an optometrist beforehand, they probably haven’t been taught how to wear or care for their lenses correctly. The results can be nasty and range from mildly irritating complications, to potentially sight-threatening conditions such as fungal infections like microbial keratitis. How to avoid a frightening mishap this Halloween: - Seek guidance from your optician before using novelty contact lenses - Avoid purchasing cheap products online - Clean and store your lenses properly to avoid infection -Do not fall asleep in your lenses - Never share contact lenses with other people

CH Declares War on Plastic

Christ’s Hospital school, near Horsham, has stopped giving out single use plastic bottles to pupils and has instead invested in giving every one of its 900 pupils a reusable water bottle. The idea was born when a group of pupils and staff started an ecoclub last year, called the Christ’s Hospital Eco Rangers. The group were horrified to discover that in the space of a year the School would give out 28,000 single-use plastic water bottles for students to use every time they went away on sports matches, field days and theatre trips.

“It seemed crazy to be wasting all those plastic bottles needlessly and drinking bottled water when we have drinkable water on tap,” explained the teacher in charge of this initiative, Zoe Munday. “It has been scientifically proven that when it comes to mineral content, including calcium and magnesium, there is no benefit to drinking bottled water in the UK, so there was even more reason to make the swap to reusable water bottles.” The School has now invested in giving every student an insulated, aluminium reusable water bottle, stylishly branded with

the Christ’s Hospital crest. “It’s lightweight, durable and it keeps water cold for 24 hours. Great for taking to away matches,” explained Lucy, a Year 12 pupil. “It’s a great initiative to move towards a greener planet. A big step in the right direction,” said Tristan, also a Year 12 pupil. “The response has been fantastic,” enthused Miss Munday. “The students love their new bottles and everyone is embracing the new initiative. Here’s to a more sustainable future for our students!”

Charities calling for public support to receive funding

Three charities are hoping to be the recipients of £500 after being shortlisted in the latest round of NYEs Building Supplies’ campaign ‘Proud to be Local’. The builders’ merchant, which is based in Kingsfold, has announced the latest finalists to make it onto the shortlist in this round and is calling out to the public to vote for its favourite. The group with the most votes will win. The three causes that have been shortlisted this time are: Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, Compton Lane, Horsham: The Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School caters for pupils with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties, or complex needs. It currently has 100 pupils between the ages of 2 and 16 who attend and its head, Mrs Lesley Dyer, was recently named Head Teacher of the Year. The money will be used towards creating a sensory garden and interactive library for the children. The Secret Garden Sanctuary, Holmbury St Mary: The Secret

Garden Sanctuary is a non-profit community company which is creating a sanctuary for vulnerable adults and children. Once finished, the space will also be open to local families and businesses. The group would like to use the £500 to help complete the project. Amber Pre-School, Horsham: Amber Pre-School is based on Amberley Road in Horsham and is currently expanding its education experience to include a weekly forest school for children. It would like to create an outdoor eco-play house so the children have the freedom to explore nature and wildlife and a wonderful learning opportunity. Rex Nye, who is Managing Director of NYEs Building Supplies, said: “There are three ways for people to vote - Facebook, at our depot and via email. Everyone is welcome to vote using all three methods and it is a great way to maximise the chances of winning for each group. We wish our three latest finalists the very best of luck.” Votes can be cast in three simple ways; Either by visiting NYEs Building Supplies depot in Kingsfold, along the A24, and posting a token in the relevant voting box, clicking the chosen group on the poll that will be pinned to the top of NYEs Facebook page, or by emailing proudtobelocal@dwnye. co.uk and putting the name of the group being voted for in the subject line (only one email vote per address will be counted). Voting will close at midnight on Sunday 24 November 2019.

Former HDLMA chair issues Battle of the Bands statement Mark Daly, the former chair of the now disbanded Horsham District Live Music Alliance and current chair of the committee for the long-standing ‘Horsham Battle of the Bands’, has issued the following statement. “This is a clarifying statement to clear up any confusion that may have arisen regarding the long-standing annual Battle of the Bands Competition in the Horsham District. ‘Horsham Battle of the Bands’ celebrated a bumper 27th year this July and August with a very high standard of bands entering and large turnouts at all six events. The competition was founded in 1993 and from 2003 to 2012 was run by the Horsham District Live Music Alliance (HDLMA). From 2013 a sub-committee of the HDLMA was formed specifically to keep the competition going. At a meeting in 2017, it was agreed with the HDLMA that once the HDLMA had disbanded later that year, the remaining members of the sub-committee would continue to organise the competition annually as independent entity ‘Horsham

Battle of the Bands’, a not for profit, volunteer run organisation. Since then, it has been the responsibility of this entity alone to organise the event and safeguard its legacy. The recently advertised ‘Battle of the Bands: The Revamp’ is a completely new event run by a private company and is not endorsed in any way by the former Horsham District Live Music Alliance. While we welcome any and all live music in the district, the ‘Horsham Battle of the Bands’ committee is bound by its constitution to not let any confusion that could damage the future or legacy of this nearly 30-year-old institution go unaddressed. We wish the organisers of this new event all the best with it and hope this statement clears up any confusion. We will be announcing ‘Horsham Battle of the Bands’ 2020 dates and opening for entries very soon. Competition Winner names Drusillas Bats They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky… Competition Winner names Drusillas Bats After the Addams Family Over the past week, Drusillas Park, has been running a spooktacular Halloween competition to name four of their lovely fruit bats. The results are now in and Drusillas is proud to announce that the winning names are straight out of the Addams family: Pugsley, Wednesday, Gomez and Fester. The competition received hundreds of entries, with lots of people eager to be in with a chance of naming the cheeky group of bats. There were some fantastic entries, with names such as ‘Harry, Ron, Hagrid and Voldemort’, ‘Hocus, Pocus, Thackery and Binks’, ‘Casper, Fatso, Stretch and Stinky’ and ‘Boris, Donald, David, Jeremy (because there’s nothing scarier than Brexit)’ ranking among the best. Drusillas’ competition brief left lots of scope for creativity, with

the only guidelines being that the names should pair well together and be appropriate for Halloween. The winning entry came from Laura Edwards, who entered via Facebook. Head Keeper, Sophie Leadbitter, commented: “We are thrilled with the new names Laura has picked out for our little bats! Very fitting names seeing as we are so close to Halloween and bats are synonymous with the occasion. We do have to say though, our bats are extremely friendly and not scary at all! We’re sure they will love their new names.” A few months ago, Drusillas Park welcomed not one, not two, not three… but eight new Rodrigues fruit bats to the Park. Four of them were named early on, but keepers were struggling to think of names for the remaining four lads. After scratching their heads and trying to come up with suitable names, Keepers decided to throw it over to the public to see if they can come up with names for their group of males.

Sophie continued: “We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who entered the competition, we had a really tough time whittling our choices down. We are just thrilled with our mini Addams Family; we couldn’t have asked for better names!” Don’t forget Drusillas Shriek Week is nearly here! Keep your little horrors half term happy and bring them down to Drusillas family friendly Halloween celebration. Shriek Week will run from Saturday 25 October to Sunday 3 November. Venture through the creepy cobwebbed corridors of Haunted Heights, run from the Mummy hidden in the Maze, meet the mystical monster The Gruffalo (weds 30 October) and encounter creepy crawlies in the Discovery Centre. Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open from 10.00am daily. For more information, please telephone 01323 874100 or visit the website at www.drusillas.co.uk

Gothic goodies to send a shiver down the spine in The Hawth Studio

What better way to get in the mood for Halloween than with a gothic tail to make the spine tingle. On Tuesday 29 October 7.45pm, The Occasion present, The Monster and Mary Shelley. Lord Byron challenges his guests Percy and Mary Shelley to ‘each write a ghost story’. Two days later Mary, 18 years old and having recently watched her premature baby die, has a ‘waking dream’ and begins to write a story that will haunt and define her for the rest of her life. Over 200 years since the publication of Frankenstein, The Occasion is delighted to

present a new production drawing inspiration from Mary Shelley’s extraordinary life. Incorporating elements of music hall, melodrama, horror and teenage rebellion with a pulsing, contemporary cinematic score, The Monster and Mary Shelley is a celebration of one of literature’s most influential talents and an atmospheric, moving, and, at times, darkly comic exploration of the Gothic Girl who electrified the world. On Wednesday 6 November 7.45pm the chilling atmosphere continues when Rumpus Theatre Company return with The Masque of the Red Death. Prince Prospero and a handful of his nobility shut themselves away in a heavily fortified castle, to escape the terrible plague that is sweeping their land. Disdainfully indifferent to the sufferings of his people, the Prince throws a lavish ball, but as the masque reaches its orgiastic climax and the clock chimes midnight, a mysterious, uninvited guest is found in their midst… a guest that wreaks a terrifying revenge! Edgar Allan Poe’s terrifying classic follows last years’ ‘wonderfully creepy’ (Eastern Daily Press) The Devil’s Bride and is recommended ‘to anyone who enjoys sitting on the edge of their seat’ (whatsgoodtodo.co.uk). Tickets for both shows can be purchased by calling The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or visiting www. hawth.co.uk

from castles and caves through to nightclubs and renaissance fayres, some of their favourites have included Hampton Court Palace, Berkley Castle, The Royal Albert Hall, Chateau de Fontainebleau in France and Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. In addition, the Mediaeval Baebes have also toured with Jules Holland, supported Michael Flatley in Hyde Park, performed at the The Game Of Thrones Festival in Canada and appeared as joint guests on a show with Meatloaf! But as their ethereal harmonies transport the listeners through a myriad of ancient and forgotten languages, whilst being accompanied by a dazzling array of exotic and period instruments, this unique group of vocalists and musicians weave their storytelling magic through the original settings of mediaeval texts, traditional folk songs, nursery rhymes and carols. This is a show that I cannot wait to see, and Katheryn Blake their musical director, composer and produce explained “Our new winter show is set to be a vibrant performance that will be moving, amusing, rousing and spell-binding. Our music comes

alive when we sing in churches and cathedrals because it was designed to be sung there, so it really is mediaeval music coming home! We will be celebrating this magical time of year by performing Christmas carol classics from our top ten album Of Kings & Angels, in addition to songs from our new album A Pocketful of Posies, the uplifting title theme for ITV’s Victoria and some other contemporary and traditional songs.” Their recently released A Pocketful of Posies album re-creates nursery rhymes as exquisitely arranged pieces for all ages to enjoy and may at first glance, appear to be a strange project to embark on. However, this album which is accompanied by a hardback book pull-out, with beautiful illustrations and an in-depth literary background on the featured nursery rhymes, celebrates the ancient teaching tools that run throughout our culture and folklore. Many of these you will be familiar with, but others have been lost in the mists of time and this edgy and mystic album has impressively created an important musical document of English folklore and history. So the Mediaeval Baebes creatively combine music, dance and theatre. And, with mediaeval choreography, some fascinating historical facts and the occasional saucy joke, their enjoyment of all things mediaeval and love of music cannot help but captivate all who are lucky enough to see them perform. The Mediaeval Baebes are really set to enchant and uplift their audiences in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 7th December, so don’t miss this magical experience that will immerse your senses in a timeless treat of unique musical beauty. Tickets are now available from www.mediaevalbaebes.com at a cost of £25 each.

The Mediaeval Baebes and a Timeless Treat of Music, Dance and Theatre

Most recognised for their title track to the renowned ITV series Victoria, the internationally acclaimed Mediaeval Baebes are once again returning to St Mary’s Church in Horsham, where they will escort their audience through a musical journey inspired by a time when poetry and music was created to invoke sensory pleasure. But who are the Mediaeval Baebes and what has made this septet’s haunting vocal harmonies become renowned across the globe? The Mediaeval Baebes began over 20 years ago when a group of friends broke into a cemetery and sang together, clad in flowing white gowns and crowns of ivy. After 3 chart-topping classical albums, an Ivor Novello Award, numerous sell-out tours of the UK, USA, Europe and Asia, and most recently, 2 Emmy- Award nominations for their soundtrack to ITV’s hit period drama Victoria; the Mediaeval Baebes are established as one the most successful, female-led early music and folk ensembles in Europe. Another special performance brought to Horsham’s Capitol courtesy of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019, this quality interpretation of The Lady Vanishes certainly keeps you guessing from start to finish and beyond… Set on a train travelling across

continental Europe in 1939 at the outbreak of World War Two, the play captures the spirit of the time well. Nazi Germany was homing in on Europe, but the Brits on the train just want to carry on their lives as normal, more bothered about the cricket scores back in England than the

threat of a pending war. The Lady Vanishes follows socialite Iris Henderson, who discovers that her elderly travelling companion Miss Froy, has disappeared while she was sleeping in the train carriage. Upon asking around about the missing lady, Iris is bewildered to

find her fellow passengers denying ever having seen her. The only person she can persuade to help her find Miss Froy is a young musician named Max, and together they set about searching the train for clues as the mystery unfolds. Playing to a packed audience on the debut night (Monday 21 October) the quality cast weaved their way through the many twists and turns of the story line – there was hi-jinks humour, romance, raw emotion and fast paced action. The set design is inspired and plays a big part in this drama, the sliding door configuration of the authentic 1930s train with its realistic jostling was a great idea and well executed, adding to the mystery and the humour. This is a production which combines fun, drama and suspense, all crammed into a couple of rail carriages. Remaining performances: Fri 25 Oct 7:30 pm; Sat 26 Oct 2:30 pm; Sat 26 Oct 7:30 pm, Capitol Theatre Tickets: Available online: www. thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Capitol Box Office: 01403 750220

JN Theatre Group students gain BA qualification places at top schools JN Theatre Group, the Horsham based performing arts school, celebrates three of its students gaining BA qualification places at top vocational drama schools. Lotti is studying Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting, Anna is studying Acting at East 15 and Kieran is at Chester University training for a career in Broadcast Production and Presenting. This is an extraordinary achievement for a “boutique” theatre school, which started seven years ago and is solely based in Horsham. JN Theatre Group has small classes which means that pupils benefit from tuition tailored to benefit the individual. Students are trained by industry professionals who have West End theatre, film and TV experience. The principals, Gael Johnson and Michael Neilson, met while performing in London’s West End and besides numerous film and TV credits, between them they

have appeared in eleven West End shows. Last year, they launched their new West End Performers classes with their friend Nikki Belsher, assistant choreographer/resident director of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Billy Elliott”. JN Theatre Group organise theatre trips for students to see the techniques that they are taught being put into practice: most recently with a trip to the West End hit Showstopper! The future looks bright as Michael and Gael are currently helping more students with their applications for places at vocational drama schools. Pupils will also have the opportunity of masterclasses in musical theatre and television acting technique with the associate director of the musical, Matilda and a star from BBC’s Eastenders.

Mailman releases tenth of twelve 2019 singles ‘ Soulsucker’, the 10th single from the 3rd Mailman album S3ASON (season three) came out on 18th October. Mailman frontman Jamie ‘Stan’ Stanley: “Soulsuckers are not limited to the witching season but I figured it’s as good a time as any to release a record about one. It’s a song about rising above liars and bullies and always coming out on top by virtue of the fact you’re not an a***hole. A very old song of

mine that never gets old, sadly. Or happily, depending on how you look at it.” S3ASON is being released as twelve singles, one for every month of 2019, with the album released in 2020. The 11th single ‘Rooting For Humanity’ comes out on 22nd November. Mailman can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and at www.mailmanstan. co.uk

Great potential in Plummers Plain

It’s often said that the three most important things to consider when buying property are

location, location, location. So although you can’t pick up and move a house from one place

Quote The District Post when booking

to another, you can still maximise its potential. Tyndrew in Plummers Plain,

offers both a superb location and potential to extend into extensive loft space, according to Nicholas Hapgood, head of residential sales at Henry Adams in Horsham. “This is a well presented property which is nicely set back from the road behind mature trees and shrubs and accessed through double 5-bar gates, all in about three quarters of an acre with countryside views,” said Nicholas. “Extensive accommodation is spread across the ground floor which includes 4 bedrooms, a kitchen/breakfast room and linked living and dining rooms. The current owners use one of the bedrooms as a home office, but the layout is very flexible depending on your requirements and with an eye to the future, the loft space is vast so could well offer an opportunity to extend upwards if required.” Tyndrew currently extends to just over 2,000 sq ft excluding the loft space and double garage. Outside, the gardens incorporate level lawns surrounded by flower beds and borders. A second patio area is the perfect spot for summer breakfasts and the mature fruit trees grow alongside hedging, while at the end of the garden lies open countryside and woodland offering wonderful views. Tyndrew is currently on the market with Henry Adams at £965,000 and part exchange may be considered if buyers have yet to sell their current home, subject to negotiation. To view this substantial home and its potential, call Nicholas Hapgood at Henry Adams on 01403 253271 or email horsham@

Questions to ask when selling your home Selling your home is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. The financial implications are substantial and it could be a stressful experience. There are lots of things to consider, not least which estate agent to help you through process. Here are 5 questions you should ask your estate agent when deciding to sell your home...

1. What will you charge? There’s never been more choice when choosing an estate agent to sell your home. From traditional high street agents, to online services and hybrids, knowing which is best can be a difficult decision. Remember to ask if the fee is all-inclusive and whether it is paid upfront or at the end of the process.

2. How long am I tied in for? Before signing on the dotted line, establish how long you will be tied to their contract. Most agents will stipulate that your property remains with them as a sole agency for a number of weeks. Once that initial period is up, if your property hasn’t been sold you can change agents or market with more than one agent.

3. What asking price should I set?

Farhalls Crescent – For Sale £585,000 Offering all the space a growing family could need, this bright and spacious four bedroom detached house is located in a popular residential area only a few minutes’ walk from Littlehaven station.

The beauty of traditional high street agents is the knowledge they have regarding the local market. While the asking price decision is ultimately yours, having the full picture from a well informed and knowledgeable agent can really help.

4. Is my property ready to be sold? Getting your agent’s opinion on your property and its condition is a great way to prepare for the marketing process. The agent should know the kind of decor that is appealing to buyers in your area and be able to suggest improvements to make it appeal to more buyers.

5. Is it the best time to sell a house in the UK?

The property has been expertly extended to create a large main living room with adjoining dining area both giving direct access to the secluded rear garden. The stunning refitted kitchen has been finished to an exceptional standard, with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and ample worktop space. Upstairs you will find the large family bathroom, an en-suite shower room and all the bedrooms are complemented by fitted wardrobes.

play. Although the property has already been extended there is potential for further development, subject to planning permission. Call us on 01403 248222 to arrange your viewing of this beautifully presented home.

There are good and not-so-good times to sell your home. Spring, Summer, Autumn all have different positives and negatives so you should consider your agent’s knowledge of the market conditions before deciding to sell. If you are thinking of putting your property up for sale call us on 01403 248222 for up to date market advice or pop in to our office just off the Carfax in Horsham town centre.

Collyer’s net national Basketball finals place Collyer’s Men’s Basketball side have booked their place at the National Association of College’s (AOC) Basketball Finals, which will be held in Nottingham next spring. The team won through after triumphing at the AOC Sport Basketball Regionals, held at the Solent Sports Complex in Southampton. Collyer’s pool comprised Winchester’s Peter Symonds, Brockenhurst, Richard Taunton (Southampton), Farnborough and Bexhill College. Collyer’s looked rusty in the opener against Peter Symonds, but won through 10-3, before a more fluent 12-9 win over a talented Brockenhurst outfit. Collyer’s dismantled Richard Taunton 22-11, before edging Farnborough 12-8 and Bexhill 12-4. In the quali-

fiers, Collyer’s then dispatched Godalming 14-6, which set-up a semi-final replay of the pool tie against a well-supported, technical Peter Symonds side. A nervy thriller edged back and forth before Collyer’s put in some late baskets for a dramatic 14-9 win. The final against Eastleigh’s Barton Peveril started breathlessly with Collyer’s mercilessly scoring the first 10 points of the game! The gifted and hard-working team never looked back, winning 21-5 in front a stunned crowd. Coach Dom Evans, widely regarded as one of the country’s top young coaches, was delighted: “The team were absolutely superb today, they played their hearts out and the results show how much dedication and training they have put into

preparing for this tough, unforgiving regional tournament. The hard work is starting to pay off and, considering that 7 of the 11 players are 1st year students, it really bodes well for the future! We’ll now have a couple of day’s rest and then start preparing for the Nationals.” Head of Collyer’s Sports Academy, John Burroughs, was thrilled: “We have a precociously talented Men’s Basketball team who thoroughly deserve all the accolades. This is a tremendous achievement!” Collyer’s Deputy Principal Steve Martell said: “The Men’s Basketball team are a credit to the Collyer’s community, Horsham and Sussex. We certainly have a golden generation of talented athletes who are capable of great things this season.”

Horsham snatch dramatic win with two last ditch tries Horsham Ladies start well, but then fade Saturday October 19 Investec Women’s League – Conference East - Horsham 0 5 Southgate Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Ladies’ game started bang on time, to the sound of Christ’s Hospital School clock chiming 2pm. Despite Southgate being third, with Horsham at the other end of the table, well into the first half there appeared to be nothing to choose between the two sides. But, eventually – in the 25th minute – the visitors went ahead after a rebound came out favourably, and, with the keeper advancing, the ball was backhanded past her into the goal. Southgate continued pressing, but Ladies’ Captain Charlotte “CJ” White cleared a goal mouth melee off the

line, until, just before the interval, a long through ball was latched onto to be slotted home from a close range one on one position to give Southgate a two goal cushion. Horsham resumed with all still to play for, but Southgate dominated, scoring three more goals and by the time Horsham rallied the dye was cast, CJ White telling the District Post: “We’ve lost half of our team and are rebuilding, but although we’ve been playing well we haven’t been able to fashion a recent win. But, it is early days yet and its very pleasing that the Ladies’ 2nds, 3rds and 4ths all won today, which augurs well for the future.” Meanwhile, Southgate remain third, 3 points behind leaders Wimbledon, with Bromley & Beckenham second and Horsham eighth.

Late surge sinks depleted battling Horsham Saturday October 19 Premier – Division 2 East – Old Georgians Men 9 1 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Men’s First Team did not enjoy the result of their trip round the M25 to Addlestone, but the score line did not tell the whole story – far from it. Losing 9-1 suggests a rout, yet for much of the game Horsham were well in contention, until their youthful side was overrun by the far more experienced and abundant hosts. The first telling point to relate is that Old Georgians had a squad of 16, compared with Horsham’s 13, which was reduced to 12 when key man Joey Humphreys was forced to drop out injured at half time. The hosts opened the scoring, but Luke Portman promptly responded with a goal for Horsham, the score remaining one apiece beyond the half hour mark. A basic error then enabled the OGs to capitalise, Horsham, though, were still very much in touch when the second half got under way at 2-1. But, OGs soon found the net again, yet Horsham held them

to 3-1 well into the second session, before persistent ill discipline kept Horsham down to 10 men for substantial periods. Superior fitness and greater resources then took its toll as Horsham tired to devastating effect, shipping in six more goals in rapid succession, including a hat rick from the league’s top scorer, Jack Redknap and two goals from Elliott Messem. However, the consensus holds that Horsham’s new team has scope to improve hugely and will benefit from gelling together as a unit the more they play together, the hope being that they can notch up some much needed victories in the reasonably near future, long before the business end of the season beckons. Sevenoaks 2 are currently top, with Wimbledon 2, second on goal difference from Old Georgians, with the latter pair both on ten points. Horsham are in the basement, but play tenth placed Lewes at Christ’s Hospital on Saturday, with an 11.30 am push back. Like Horsham, Lewes is seeking an elusive first league win of the season, and Horsham will be looking to avenge their Sussex Cup defeat against the East Sussex side in September.

Saturday October 19 – RFU London 1 South League Thurrock 34 38 Horsham Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although Thurrock are below Horsham in the table they have a good rugby pedigree, having played in higher leagues, but cheeky Horsham rounded off their first ever visit to the Essex club’s Oakfield Ground by pocketing the points with two last gasp tries. With the game seemingly theirs for the taking, the hosts - yet to win at home this season – were left stunned and horrified, mumbling: “Horsham nicked it from us at the death.” Whereas, Horsham Head Coach, Nick Stocker was naturally elated, saying: “A five point win stolen from the jaws of defeat was a fantastic outcome for us!”

Horsham had begun almost as dramatically when Declan Nwachukwu latched onto a poorly taken Thurrock penalty to feed Mike Watts, who set off Josh Sudder to run the length of the field for Horsham’s first try, duly converted by Tom Johnson, going on to have another superb kicking game, a telling difference in a close encounter. Horsham’s advantage was short-lived, however, Thurrock maintaining territory courtesy of conceded penalties and going on to score a maximised try of their own, before adding another, albeit missing the kick. Johnson brought the score to 12-10, with the first of his four penalties, before the Green & Whites recovered the lead through a Jack Osgood try, Horsham moving 8 points clear after Johnson’s conversion and subsequent penalty. However, Thurrock reduced their arrears to 15-20 at the break after

slotting home a further set piece. Soon after the resumption a penalty increased Horsham’s lead, only for a converted try to draw Thurrock up to just a point behind Horsham, who were then relieved to see a host penalty go begging. But, the roller coaster continued, Thurrock promptly going back in front with a converted try, Johnson then whittling the deficit down to 29-26 with a well-taken distant penalty, but when Thurrock crossed the line again, the kick mercifully going astray, Horsham trailed 34-26 with the clock running down fast, surely condemning them to leave empty handed. Not so! Horsham’s Ciaran Preston suddenly completed an opportunist try from a line out, Johnson obliging from the touchline for Horsham to breath down Thurrock’s necks 3433, but with the final whistle poised and ready. Incredibly, there was still time – just – for Nwachukwu to pull off another of his electric runs, culminating in Jordan Bell, Johnson and Finn Hillicks combining to send Jamie Redmayne over for Horsham to grab the 38-34 bonus point win, Nick Stocker saying: “We were far from fluent today, but we still looked more dangerous, creating some great tries. Tom Johnson was once again excellent both with his kicking and his carrying. Birthday boy Marcus Condon also put in a good performance, but Dan Cass is our Man of the Match, because of his uncompromising defence. Whilst we are pleased to get the win, we are much better than today and will need to be on top of our game against third-placed league favourites Camberley at home this Saturday.”

Broadbridge Heath see off high flying Peacehaven Saturday October 19 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 3 2 Peacehaven & Telescombe Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a big, battling win for Broadbridge Heath against thrusting Peacehaven & Telescombe, moving Heath up to ninth and pushing the visitors down a place to third, after suffering only their second defeat of the season. Heath survived a very early scare when Michael Lloyd crashed a shot over, before an attack of their own ended in the gloves of visiting keeper Alieu Secka. Then, new signing, legendary veteran defender Gary Charman, averted danger by coolly heading back to Mitchell Bromage in the Heath goal. Action switched to the other end but Jamie Taylor was just unable to connect when the ball was hooked across, Charman heading clear again before a solo run from Tim Cook culminated with his shot being deflected off for a corner. Another Heath set piece followed, but Jake Legrange tested Bromage on the break, ahead of a Peacehaven free kick being headed off for a corner, which was kept at bay before a second corner

was punched clear by Bromage, who then rushed out to smother further concern. Heath’s Alfie Jones limped off after a goal line clash and then Heath escaped when Peacehaven blasted wide from close range with the goal empty. Heath, though, responded well, with Andy Waddingham’s free kick nodded on by Charman, Renato Carvalho’s innocentlooking jab sneaked over the line despite a defender’s desperate lunge, giving Heath a 1-0 advantage at the interval. The second half began in similarly lively vein, a rebound coming out to Waddingham, whose excellent contact was blocked by a defender, just ahead of the clearance of a Peacehaven corner. Then came a dead heat with Cook and Secka, the keeper managing to avert danger, immediately followed by Luis Blake being just unable to finalise a Heath opportunity. Two Peacehaven corners were thwarted by Charman, but Marcus Allen contrived to thread the ball through the packed area to equalise low on the left with Bromage unsighted. Heath, though, soon re-took the lead when, after an excellent build up, Secka had a nightmare, Cook’s modest shot dribbling past him into the net. Heath immediately twisted the knife when poor defending left Taylor on his own out

on the left to crash in a rocket for a two goal advantage. Suddenly it was all Heath, sub Ben Whitely firing across the goal to miss narrowly amid bellows from frustrated travelling supporters: “What’s up, Peacehaven – come on!” Cook unleashed a long range cracker, just wide, then Taylor skimmed the bar. But, with Peacehaven intent on salvaging a point, Curtis Ford got through to calmly lift the ball over Bromage’s head to leave the score tantalisingly poised on 3-2 with five minutes of full time remaining. One minute into added time Kilula headed a Peacehaven corner over, until a Heath set piece came and went in the tense final moments, but it was Heath’s day, Peacehaven rueing missed opportunities, saying: “We should have put the game to bed in the first half while we had the chance.” With some games elsewhere being abandoned because of waterlogged facilities, Heath’s new pitch sailed through unblemished at the end of the memorable, highly entertaining game. On Saturday Heath travel to 13th-placed AFC Uckfield Town. Meanwhile, a date for your diary – Charlton Athletic is sending a team to play Heath on Tuesday November 12th, kick off 7.15

Touch Rugby Selection for Pupil

Kensie McNaught, a Year 12 pupil at Christ’s Hospital near Horsham, has been selected for the England High Performance Training Squad for Touch Rugby. Kensie will make her International debut for England later this month, when she travels with the England squad to play in the European Challenge Cup in Spain over half term. Kensie is new to Christ’s Hospital, having just started in the Sixth Form; even though there are a lot of new sports for Kensie to choose from at CH, there is no doubt that she will continue with

her passion – touch rugby. ‘In the short time that Kensie has been at CH, her passion and dedication for rugby has been most evident, she is a great role model for the younger players in the school,’ said Director of Sport at Christ’s Hospital Dave Messenger. He added, ‘Kensie’s swift climb to international success has, alongside the Rugby World Cup, given a real buzz to Rugby at CH.’ Kensie has played touch rugby since the age of 10, starting at Marlborough College Malaysia and Tanglin Rugby Club in Singapore. She worked her way up to the Tanglin Rugby Club Premier League Team two years ago and was a member of the Singapore World Cup Squad. Such is her love of the sport that, this July, the day after she moved to England, she joined CSSC Eagles in London. More recently she has been playing Regional Level Touch Rugby, being selected for the South East England Taipans. Recently her team won the Nationals, and on the back of her performances, Kensie was selected for the England High Performance Training Squad (the initial England squad for the European Championships and World Cup). As this is the Open Women’s Squad, she will be one of the youngest members of the squad.

Horsham hold Cray to a draw Tuesday October 22 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 1 1 Cray Wanderers Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The sides had to be content with a share of the points at Horsham’s Camping World Stadium on Tuesday night, a reasonable result considering Cray’s first half dominance and the Hornets’ lion’s share of possession in the second. Cray were promoted as clear Isthmian South East champions last season and, ahead of this match, were 7th in the Isthmian Premier Division, still one of only two sides (Enfield Town being the other) without an away league defeat. In Horsham’s last league encounter with Cray – at Lancing – the Hornets won 4-2, Cray’s first league reverse of that season. Horsham survived an early scare when Tom Murphy, through and free, blazed wide. Harvey Sparks then crossed the ball to Lewis Carey in the visitor’s goal, before Cray’s Tom Phipp unleashed a cannon ball, which was deflected off for a corner. Murphy was then back in action, but there was nobody there to connect with his supply. A further Cray corner followed, ahead of Zack Newton and Harvey Sparks combining to no effect. Horsham then chased a ball that Cray had thought was disappearing over the goal line, but, the hooked back possibility came to nothing. Horsham, though, did earn another corner as a result of a Newton attack, who promptly rushed upfield to thwart Cray’s response, whereupon Horsham’s Chris Smith sent an inviting ball in front of goal, only for the chance to go begging.

However, Horsham did take the lead in the 36th minute when Charlie Harris found Lea Dawson’s head with pinpoint accuracy. But, the lead was very shortlived – in less than a minute Cray equalised, Jay Leader heading in. An irritable phase of play ensued, with niggling fouls getting out of hand, until, with two minutes supposedly remaining, the ref blew for half time with Horsham attacking. Resuming one apiece, Horsham put Cray under real pressure, earning an early corner. Horsham keeper George Bentley had to be alert to keep Joe Taylor at bay, but Horsham regained possession with two more corners, Rob O’Toole subsequently shooting straight at Carey. A rare Cray attack was then punched clear by Bentley, but it was all Horsham, another corner evaporating without success. Cray did mount forays, Taylor passing the goal when through and a visitors’ corner was headed off harmlessly, until Hornets’ sub Jack Brivio threatened. But, the game ended in stalemate after Horsham had taken the lead against the run of play in the first half and bossed the second, albeit without creating any really clear cut chances after the break. Horsham Manager Dom Di Paola says: “Horsham are under absolutely no pressure”, adding: “At the moment we’re not worried about teams – we’re just playing games and seeing how we get on, it’s probably our least stressful season. We’ve just been ticking along without any expectations, really enjoyable!” On Saturday Horsham revert to cup action with a visit to Coles Park in North London’s Wood Green, to play Haringey Borough in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy.

Horsham back second after demolishing Merstham Photo by John Lines

Saturday October 19 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 4 0 Merstham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Another bumper crowd at Horsham’s Camping World Community Stadium revelled as two unanswered goals in each half propelled the Hornets to a big win over Merstham last Saturday, moving them back up to second, just two points behind leaders Folkestone, who were surprisingly handed a home defeat by mid table Bognor. The game started quietly, but,

after Zack Newton’s cross went begging, mid way through the first half Horsham banished the memory of the previous weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Bishop’s Stortford when Charlie Harris blasted home the rebound from his own corner, with visiting keeper Matte Pierson deflecting the ball in via the crossbar. George Bentley then safely pouched a weak attempt from Merstham’s Ellis Brown, before Horsham took advantage of the visitor’s porous defence, Rob O’Toole gleefully celebrated his 150th game for Horsham by converting Harvey Sparks’ pinpoint cross to go two goals up. And, it might soon have got even better, with first Harris

being just off target, ahead of Newton and Chris Smith combining to earn another Harris corner, from which O’Toole was wayward. Horsham kept pressing, with Harris continuing to plague the visitor’s back line, Pierson being relieved to push the shot away, but with the Hornets in the ascendance, they enjoyed their two goal cushion at the break. Soon after the resumption, home keeper Bentley was called upon to keep a clean sheet, which he managed without difficulty, until another Harris corner tormented the visitors, but this time Pierson did well to keep out Shelley’s close range effort. O’Toole then missed out on a seemingly certain goal before Merstham passed up a golden opportunity to claw back the deficit from a penalty, but Dylan Merchant’s dangerous tackle went unpunished when Brown was too aerial from the spot. Merstham might soon have made amends, only for sub Brendan Ocran to somehow fire wide with an empty goal beckoning. But, Horsham then compounded the visitors’ misery, Smith latching on to Newton’s supply to beat Pierson in impressive style. Pierson did then negate Harris’ strong strike, but, to the delight of their happy supporters, Horsham promptly scored their fourth when Lea Dawson crashed home Lee Harding’s supply a quarter of an hour from time.

Broadbridge Heath Football clubhouse officially opened Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Almost exactly 100 years to the day from the humble beginning of Broadbridge Heath Football Club, last Friday was a big, big day in the long history of the Club – their excellent clubhouse at their new Countryside Stadium was officially opened. At the very well attended ceremony in the club room, Broadbridge Heath FC officials were accompanied by Councillors from both Horsham District Council and the Parish Council, together with representatives from developers Countryside, a group of past players and a number of current members, all enjoying the wonderful new state of the art facilities. Inside there are 4 team changing rooms, 3 match official changing rooms, a social area, bar, kitchen, board room, office, storeroom and domestic arrangements. While, outside there is the floodlit ground, a further two pitches to the south of the site, one with floodlights for training, and the potential of using the fitness facilities in the Leisure Centre immediately next door. The ceremony was opened by

BBH FC Secretary Andy Crisp, reading a letter from Horsham District Council’s co-ordinator, Trevor Beadle, whose job it was to liaise between the Developers, the Council and the Football Club, a truly difficult job trying to keep everyone happy, but Trevor went above and beyond to help the Football Club and will always be welcome at the club. In the letter Trevor said: “This was a challenging project, but well worth fighting for – for the Club, the community, and for the people of Broadbridge Heath. Everyone played their part – especially Andy Crisp and, Chairman Keith Soane. We can all be proud of what has been achieved.” Then Keith Soane, with 50 years experience at the Club, reflected: “It has been a long, complex process, taking over 21 years, but in partnership with the Councils and Countryside everyone’s patience paid off and we’ve ended up with a superb community asset and some of the best facilities in the league. Special mention must be made of District Councillor Malcolm Curnock who sadly passed away in 2016. Malcolm was also a member of the football club having been involved for almost 30 years as player, coach,

manager and committee member and he ensured that the Council were always fully aware of the clubs requirements. It’s very sad that he won’t see the results of his efforts but his partner Lin is here to officially declare the Malcolm Curnock Pavilion open, a lasting testament to Malcolm.” In her address Lin said: “It is wonderful seeing the Club going from strength to strength – Malcolm would be so proud and I look forward to seeing women’s football here!” Lin then unveiled a commemorative plaque adjacent to the mail entrance. Just inside the clubhouse there is a sepia photograph of the 1922 team that went on to win the Rudgwick Charity Cup four times. The photograph was studied by three former members, who had played with sons of the players’ pictured – 89 year old Roy Nightingale began playing for BBH in 1947, Dick Hall in 1948 and John Carter in 1951. John proudly displayed his second division winners’ medal, and Dick recalled: “We played at Sleets Corner in a field behind the Shelley Arms and got changed in the stables!” – all a far, far cry from today’s superb new provision.

Sussex Cricket makes a return to Horsham

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club is thrilled to announce that Sussex first team cricket will be returning to their Cricketfield Road ground next season. A sustainable financial agreement has been reached, and a contract signed. On a Friday or Sunday next July or August, Essex, Hampshire, Kent or Middlesex will visit, for a one day

50 overs a side game. The county fixtures are usually released in November. Sussex’s return is great news, because sadly, the spectacle of counties playing 1st team cricket at out grounds is an endangered species, some counties only staging home games at their head quarters. Whereas, in addition to Horsham, Sussex will also be playing at Arundel and Eastbourne next season.

Sussex cricket at Horsham – so often a happy hunting ground has been well supported and the players like playing here. Sussex expressed their disappointment when the 2016 Festival was cancelled, the then CEO Zac Toumazi, saying: “I sincerely hope that this is just a temporary pause in a long – over 100 years – tradition.” There have sometimes been problems with wickets elsewhere in the county,

but those at Horsham have been widely praised, with umpires describing them as being “of Test standard.” Sussex 2nd XI games and a variety of representative matches have continued at Horsham Cricket Club, but, the last time Sussex’s senior side played a competitive match there was in 2015, when the four day game ended in three, before disaster struck when the lucrative one day game against attractive opponents, Lancashire, was completely washed out. And, in the absence of a sponsor, over a century of county cricket at Horsham was halted. Rob Andrew, Sussex Cricket Chief Executive, expressed his delight, saying: “The return of county cricket to Horsham is brilliant news. Continuing to grow the game across the whole of the county is one of our main ambitions and bringing first-team cricket to another part of Sussex can only help with that. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing top-level athletes perform in the flesh, and it’s brilliant that even more people will now have the opportunity to see our current crop of professionals in action. Sussex already has a rich history of playing at Cricket Field Road and we’re delighted that this will resume next summer. Hopefully it will continue for many more years after that. I thank Chris Shambrook, Horsham CC Club Manager, and

Richard Marshall, Horsham CC Cricket Chairman for their work in making our return possible.” Chris Shambrook said: “Rob Andrew and the team at Sussex have been working alongside the committee here at Horsham on this project for over 18 months. We feel that the right balance has been found, mutually beneficial for both parties. On a personal note I have been coming to the Horsham Festival since the late 70’s - an iconic event with such great memories of matches and star players. On top of that, it’s a superb place for the local cricket community to meet up. Whenever I mention my place of work, the question I always get asked is: ‘when are Sussex coming back?’. Well, now I can proudly tell them!” Richard Marshall added: “Horsham has a tremendous history of Festival cricket and it is fantastic it is returning. We’ve had a fabulous relationship with Sussex over the years providing players such as Tony Pigott, Robin Martin- Jenkins, Chris Nash, Jofra Archer and we hope to have home grown talents Will Beer, Tom Haines and Tom Clark in the side when Sussex return.” Sponsorship and hospitality packages for Sussex’s fixture at Horsham next summer are available. If you or your business are interested, please email admin@horshamsportsclub.com or call Chris Shambrook on 01403 254628.

Eleven Sussex players selected in The Hundred draft Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Eleven Sussex players, a whole team’s worth, will play in next summer’s staging of the muchvaunted new 100 ball competition – The Hundred. Designed to emulate the existing international T20 franchises, such as the IPL and the Aussie Big Bash, we are told, The Hundred will be an even more pacey and innovative ‘made for TV’ format. The playing conditions limit each innings to 100 balls with a change of ends after 10 balls, bowlers delivering either five or 10 consecutive balls. Each bowler will have a maximum of 20 balls

per game, and each bowling side will get a strategic timeout of up to two and a half minutes, with a 25-ball powerplay start for each team. The men’s competition (city based), will see counties combining regionally under coaches from around the cricketing world, excluding England, at the following venues - players not being obliged to be confined to the location where the majority of their county colleagues will appear - Edgbaston (Birmingham Phoenix – Warwickshire & Worcestershire), Lord’s (London Spirit – Middlesex, Essex & Northants), Old Trafford (Manchester Originals - Lancashire),

Headingley (Northern Superchargers – Yorkshire & Durham), The Oval (Invincibles – Surrey & Kent), Southampton’s Ageas Bowl (Southern Brave – Hampshire & Sussex), Trent Bridge (Rockets – Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire & Leicestershire) and Cardiff (Welsh Fire – Glamorgan, Gloucestershire & Somerset). England contracted players were allocated ahead of last Sunday’s against the clock draft at the Sky studios, with Jofra Archer destined for the Ageas Bowl along with county teammate, Chris Jordan, picked up for £75,000, Tymal Mills (£60,000), Delray Rawlins (£50,000) and George Garton (£40,000). New

Sussex signing Ravi Bopara (£100,000) joins Birmingham Phoenix, Phil Salt was snapped up in the first round of bidding for £100,000 by Manchester Originals, David Wiese (£50,000) joins Northern Superchargers, Laurie Evans (£30,000) will be with Oval Invincibles, and Luke Wright (£30,000) is contracted to Trent Rockets, while Danny Briggs (£30,000) will play at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens. Each of the eight teams in The Hundred will get one further wild card selection following next summer’s Vitality Blast, meanwhile there have been some surprising omissions, including Chris Gayle. Player payments are likely

to accelerate the drift from more demanding four and five day cricket towards the lucrative shorter format. Pending the announcement of the counties’ fixtures for 2020 it remains to be seen how the allocation of players for The Hundred will impact on the ECB’s domestic programme of matches. Meanwhile, the Ladies’ Hundred competition will be based at alternative venues, including Hove, bringing out ground cricket into focus. And, it has been announced that New Zealand superstar all rounder and champion bat, Suzie Bates, will be in the Southern Brave squad at the county’s 1st Central County Ground.
