Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Welland Medical were thrilled to win the Bee Kind heart. Chris Primett, Managing Director, said, “St. Catherine’s has been our company’s charity for over 10 years and many of our employees have a special connection with their unique work. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he
spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” Matt Turner was also a winning bidder of two hearts – Keepsake and Abstract Love. He said “I’m an art enthusiast so I was very keen to own some of these amazing works of art. My wife was fan of Keepsake; we’ve only been married a year and I wanted to treat her. I chose Abstract Love as it will look fantastic in the office.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. Each of the hearts had its own story to tell and I’m thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.” Hannah Liles, St Catherine’s

Next weekend, millions across the UK and the Commonwealth will fall silent to commemorate the brave men and women who lost their lives in conflict. One hundred and one years ago, World War One, ‘The Great War’, ended, during which an estimated sixteen million combatants and civilians perished. There was unlikely to have been a city, town or village in England that didn’t feel the effects of the battles and the Horsham district played its full part, with sons, brothers, husbands, uncles and fathers departing for foreign parts, never to return. By way of a tribute, today
and in the following two weeks’ editions, we look at the stories of three valiant men who served both Horsham Football Club and their country with distinction, sadly making the ultimate sacrifice in World War One. This week we tell the story of Harold Agate, born on 4th March 1885 and baptised in Horsham’s St Mary’s church. His father, Henry, was a successful corn, seed and coal merchant, owning the large business in the town founded by Harold’s grandfather, Alfred. Educated at Collyers Grammar School, Harold first worked in the family business before going on

to become an accountant with the Prudential Assurance Company in London. He was a popular figure around Horsham, a good allround athlete and sturdy footballer, making his debut for Horsham FC at 17 on December 27th, 1902, helping the town team to win 2-1 against Petworth in a West Sussex Senior League match at Springfield Park. Harold went on to play a further 144 times, later becoming the club’s co-secretary. On 1st September 1914, Harold volunteered for the army, enlisting in the London Regiment as 2745 Private H Agate. Five months later, having completed his training, he found himself in France as a Lance Corporal before returning to England to undergo officer training. He had made his way up to Second Lieutenant by the time he joined the Queen’s Westminster Rifles at the Western Front in the Battle of Arras, fighting the Reserve Division from the North German state of SchleswigHolstein. The Allies had just an hour’s sleep in each of the three days leading up to the battle, leaving them poorly prepared, as noted in the Battalion War Diary of Saturday April 14th 1917: “The men were entirely whacked and there was no time or possibility of any proper explanation to them of their objectives”. It was a beautiful morning when the battalion went into action, at 5.30am, but they came up against formidable German artillery, whose machine guns proved deadly effective. Harold was wounded early in the morning, by which time two officers had been killed and another three wounded. By 5pm it was
all over and the Allies had been moved back three kilometres to Wancourt, sustaining over 50% casualties in a single day. The final report for that April day noted that three officers, including Captain Harold Agate and 96 Orderlies were missing, of which a number were believed to be prisoners in German hands. Two weeks later Harold’s parents received a letter from the Regimental Colonel, stating: “Harold was last seen in company with his Company Sergeant Major making his way to the dressing station. As neither of them was reported in, and search was made for them on subsequent nights without results, it is presumed that they are prisoners.” It is, though, officially recorded that Harold was killed in action on that fateful Saturday, but the actual circumstances relating to his death remain unknown. However, two months later, his bereaved parents received a letter from Lieutenant A Matthews Burt, who wrote: “Official information has now been received that the body of Captain H Agate has been found and buried where he fell.” Harold was an Acting Captain, at the time of his death and, as with so many of the battlefield burials, the exact location of his grave was lost through subsequent fighting. He is commemorated both at the Arras Memorial in the Faubourg d’Amiens Cemetery and on the Horsham War Memorial. This will help St Catherine’s to provide more care and support to more terminally ill people, and their family and friends, in the future. It will make a huge difference to people in the community all around us. On behalf of the hospice and all those we care for, I’d like to thank all the artists, sponsors and supporters who’ve made HeART to Heart such a success.” St Catherine’s can currently only care for one in three peo-
ple. But with the support of the community, the hospice wants to make sure that in the future no one has to face death and loss alone. The success of HeART to Heart has taken the local charity a step closer to this ambition. Wrap up warm and enjoy the delights of this much awaited sound and light spectacular in the beautiful outdoor surroundings of Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens at night. On the opening night the audience was welcomed to the venue at dusk and led downwards through beautifully lit forest sur-
which was told energetically by music, song, and immersive sound and light technology… but no spoken words. The sights, sounds and smells of the forest at night all had their part to play, creating something that was intriguing, magical and eerie, all at the same time. The talented minstrels told the story of trees – their solidity, longevity and endurance through Great Wars and Great Storms. Wood saws were played with violin bows, xylophones created from logs and played with axes and a selection of drums crafted from wood, of course. There was a definite cozy campfire feeing to the proceedings which will appeal equally to older children and adults. It certainly puts your average Halloween or fireworks night out in the shade. Horsham MP requests intervention on Britaniacrest incinerator appeal This week the Appeal against the decision taken by West Sussex County Council to reject the proposed Incinerator planned by Britaniacrest will begin to be heard in Horsham. Jeremy Quin, the MP for Horsham has issued the following statement: “It is very clear from the volume of constituent correspondence on this issue that it is a matter of great concern to many local residents. I was delighted by the decision taken by West Sussex County Council to reject the application and I am pleased that they intend to defend their decision robustly in the current appeal. I also rec-

ognise the huge work undertaken by the local community group Ni4H, which will also be represented at the Planning Inquiry. The Inspector will look at the Appeal strictly in accordance with planning law. I am, however, very conscious from representations made to me that the proposed incinerator has given rise to wider concerns among constituents. Decisions that may “give rise to substantial regional controversy”, which are “matters of more than local significance” or which are deemed a matter of “major significance for the delivery of the Government’s climate change programme and energy policies”
can all be “recovered” by the Secretary of State for the ultimate decision to be taken by Government. Given the Government’s focus on increasing recycling, many constituents have asked whether the Incinerator is required and necessary, especially in the context of the proposed construction of an Energy from Waste facility at Ford, only 25 miles from Horsham. Avoiding the risk of the creation of any overcapacity in incineration may be deemed a legitimate area of Government interest in the context of climate change policies and the impact of an expansion of the number of incinerators on the supply and demand of waste for incineration. Constituents have stressed to me that they believe that the ‘carbon intensity’ of energy produced through waste incineration is substantially more than low carbon emission sources. Residents have also argued that, given the decarbonisation of the electricity supply, incinerators built after 2020 would have a relatively greater adverse climate change impact. Given the issues to be discussed at the Appeal and the wider implications of this decision, I think
there are legitimate reasons for the Secretary of State to consider a “Recovery” and, acting on behalf of constituents, I have made that formal request to the Secretary of State. As the MP for Horsham I was delighted by the County Council’s decision to deny planning permission and I am determined to ensure that any decision on the incinerator is tested through every possible stage of consideration to ensure we get the right answer.” The Chairman of Ni4H (the No Incinerator for Horsham Community Group) welcomed Jeremy’s intervention. Chairman, Peter Catchpole, commented: “Ni4H welcome the initiative of our local MP Jeremy Quin to request the Secretary of State to consider a “Recovery” of the Incinerator Appeal. We are aware that many local people have expressed their concerns about their future wellbeing and that of future generations if the incinerator comes to this area and the wholesale change of character that would be brought to our market town. Referring the Appeal will ensure that the wider implications of this decision are taken by Government.”
New community table tennis table for Horsham’s Forum Community table tennis was given a boost when a new table tennis table was installed by Horsham District Council in the Forum area of Horsham Town Centre on Saturday 19 October. The new table was generously donated by local (West Grinstead) supplier UK Table Tennis. To launch the arrival of the new table, the Council’s Sports Development team invited along Horsham Table Tennis Club coaches Bilal RehmanFurs, Barrie Thorne and Luke Randis to support passers-by who stopped off to have a try. The event was also support-
ed by Brighton Table Tennis Club bringing across their high performance T21 squad. Along with the highly popular Ping Pong Parlour in the Swan Walk Shopping Centre and well used outdoor table in Horsham Park installed some 10 years ago, table tennis is really making a positive contribution to the activity levels in and around the town. The Council’s Sports Development team works extensively with Table Tennis England and other partners to create initiatives to encourage people to start playing the very accessible sport.

Horsham veteran joins RAF Benevolent Fund to celebrate its centenary A veteran from Horsham joined the RAF Benevolent Fund to celebrate the charity’s 100th anniversary, last month. It marked the occasion by hosting an afternoon tea at the RAF Club followed by a reception at St James’s Palace hosted by the charity’s President, His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent. The charity brought together 10 generations of beneficiaries for a one-off photoshoot, including Senior Aircraftman Dan Pelling. 39-year-old Dan’s life changed forever when a hit and run accident in 2000 left him paralysed from the chest down. The RAF Benevolent Fund purchased a house for Dan through its Housing Trust in 2003. This allowed him to move into a specially adapted bungalow close to his family. More recently, it provided accessible kitchen units and landscaped the garden so it’s easier for him to manoeuvre in his wheelchair. Dan said: “It’s not every day you get to invited to a 100th birthday party, so I’m proud to be have been able to be a part of this important day. You have a lot to deal with when you have a disability, but it’s reassuring to
know I’ll always have the Fund’s support.” As the charity marks its centenary, the RAF Benevolent Fund has launched a major campaign calling on the public to ‘Join the Search. Change a Life.’ The Fund is asking the public to help them find individuals who have served in the RAF, or their partners, and may now be in need. The charity believes there are up to 100,000, mainly older, members of the RAF Family in urgent need of support but are not seeking it. Air Vice-Marshal David Murray, Chief Executive of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “We are incredibly proud to be the RAF’s oldest friend. Since 1919, we have helped people affected by two World Wars and all manner of other conflicts, as well as those whose lives have been turned upside down away from battle. “But we know that we can do more. Last year, we supported over 53,000 people, but there are so many others who are eligible for our support and in need. Often, these are people who undertook National Service and, wrongly, don’t think of themselves as part of the RAF Family. But they did their bit and we all
Technology used to help pedestrians crossing at Thakeham junction Works on a roads improvement scheme near two schools in Thakeham are about to begin after residents and the parish council raised concerns over the difficulty pedestrians experienced crossing near the Water Lane/Thakeham Road roundabout junction, which is near both Thakeham Primary and Steyning Grammar schools in Rock Road. West Sussex Highways has developed a scheme to replace the mini roundabout with a trafficlight controlled junction. The lights’ sequence will include a dedicated pedestrian crossing phase, on both the northern and eastern ‘arms’. Latest software will also be used to ‘read’ traffic conditions, changing the signal timings to minimise queues. The mini roundabout in Rock Road will remain unchanged, although there will be refurbish-
ment of some of the existing crossing points and footways as part of the project. The scheme, costing a total of about £310,000, is being funded through developer (section 106) contributions and Government grant funding. Works are programmed to start on 11 November and scheduled to take 17 weeks, subject to factors such as severe weather. Temporary traffic lights will be used for the protection of both the public and workforce. Access will be maintained for businesses, residents and schools, although road closures will be needed for one or two days towards the end of the works so road resurfacing can be completed. Diversion routes will be in place. Picture caption: the mini roundabout at the Water Lane/ Thakeham Road junction

District’s Year of Culture sculpture is unveiled
A new art sculpture, commissioned as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 was unveiled to the public at Highwood Village, Broadbridge Heath, Horsham on Wednesday 23 October. The grand reveal gave visitors the first glimpse of the sculpture, which started its life as an eight tonne rectangular block of stone. It took in the region of four million chisel chips from members of the community, under the expert eye of sculpture artist Jon Edgar, to create the final piece. The sculpture was unveiled by Berkeley Homes Southern Managing Director, Harry Lewis, Horsham District Council Chairman Cllr Kate Rowbottom and sculptor Jon Edgar. As part of Horsham District’s Year of Culture 2019, local artist

Jon was commissioned to install the stone at the beginning of 2019, before the community sculpture project was officially launched at Highwood Village in February. Throughout the year, Jon has sculpted and carved the eight tonne stone block, drawing inspiration from local residents and passers-by to create the final artwork. Budding sculptors were taught basic carving skills throughout the year and they were encouraged to have a go and put something of themselves into the work as progress was made. A competition was run by Berkeley Homes, the developers of the Highwood Village site, to name the sculpture. The winning name was announced as “Fluvius”- the Latin for stream or river- which reflects the numerous streams and rivers of the area.
Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “I am delighted to see the final design and finished sculpture at Highwood. “It’s not often that members of the community have the opportunity to help shape and design a new piece of public art. “At the outset of the Horsham District Year of Culture our rally call to everyone was to “get involved” and this project certainly achieved this for many residents and visitors, not least the new residents of the recently constructed Highwood Village. “The sculpture provides a lasting legacy of the Year of Culture for people to enjoy in years to come. It will make an enduring impression on the environment and community at Highwood. ” My thanks go out to Berkeley Homes for commissioning such an original and imaginative community project”. Ben Annetts, Sales and Marketing Director at Berkeley Homes, comments: “We are extremely excited to be unveiling the fantastic new public art sculpture at Highwood Village. “We would like to thank and congratulate Jon Edgar for his magnificent creation. “He has worked very hard this year to create a sculpture which will provide a timeless and memorable piece of art that the whole community can enjoy in the future. “Our thanks also go to the local residents who worked with Jon to influence the final design.”

also had success with the village teams. Sussex plucked Tommy from the obscurity of local cricket and he became one of the county’s finest batsmen, scoring more than 20,000 runs in a 15-year career. Albion spotted him playing in a parks game and he initially played at half-back, before beginning a record-breaking run of goal-scoring for the club that has not been matched in peacetime football since, ending with 123 goals in 209 league and FA Cup matches between 1922 and 1929. The play also touches on Cook’s personal life, which included three marriages, a wartime bravery award, an air crash that blighted his life and his eventual suicide at the age of 49. Phil, from Burgess Hill, said: “The play uses a mix of facts and imagined dialogue from Tommy’s life to celebrate his achievements, whilst acknowledging some of the challenges he faced off the pitch. “Tommy proved to be a fascinating subject, quite apart from his superb sporting achievements.” Any group interested in seeing a free copy of the play may contact Phil on philipjdennett@ hotmail.com.

A Frightful Feast for Animals at Drusillas Park Monkeys, sloths and lemurs oh my! The animals at Drusillas Park in East Sussex have been enjoying some seasonal surprises, as keepers served them up a spook-tacular platter of pumpkins as part of their Halloween celebrations. A large number of pumpkins were delivered to the Park for Shriek Week, which is taking place during the half term until Sunday 3 November. Any leftover pumpkins were snapped up by keepers and provided to the trick or treat troop as part of their daily enrichment programme. The naturally curious lemurs were a little apprehensive to begin with; unsure what to make of the carefully carved jack-o’lanterns that were placed into their enclosure. However, after a little observation, the group established that the pumpkins
weren’t going to launch an attack and were safe to approach. Christopher Columbus had better hold onto his hat, because his exploration methods have got nothing on Drusillas’ lemurs. From athletic headstands, to jumping and diving inside the pumpkins, no part of these Halloween treats were left undiscovered. Quite a frenzy ensued in the monkey and sloth enclosure as bits of pumpkin were thrown around, nibbled on, fought over and begrudgingly shared. One monkey even tried (unsuccessfully) to fit an entire pumpkin into his mouth…Curly the sloth showed a brief interest and poked around at the pumpkin for a bit before slowly heading back to bed. Head Keeper, Sophie Leadbitter, said: “Delivering the animals’ meals in imaginative and

unusual ways is part of the zoo’s daily enrichment programme. This ensures they receive a varied and diverse diet, as well as encouraging them to think and work for their food as they would in the wild. “Pumpkins make the ideal animal snack. They are a great source of potassium, Vitamin A and they are also high in fibre. However, due to their seasonal nature, they are not often enjoyed by the residents of the zoo. The reaction from our animals was fantastic and they wolfed down their orange veggies – once they stopped playing with them that is!” Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open daily from 10am. ‘Hormonal Housewives’ is a witty, topical three hander comedy sketch show co-written by Scottish comedian and playwright Julie Coombe and her husband, playwright/director John MacIsaac. Coming to The Hawth Crawley on Wednesday 6 November for a riotous night out! Starring Suzanne Shaw (ex-Hear’Say, Dancing on Ice, Chicago in the West End), Julie Coombe (co-writer), and Josephine Partridge (Top Girls) – Hormonal Housewives is a show to make you smile and put a
spring in your step – especially if you’re one of the girls! Hormonal Housewives performed at a mammoth 64 venues across the UK during April, May and June; the mostly female audiences laughed at the cast, with the cast, at themselves and with everyone else as the show blasted its way through a catalogue of popular women’s bits: weight gain, weight loss, mood swings, housework, homework, electrolysis, men, sex, internet dating, chocolate and more. Co-writer and performer JULIE
COOMBE: “The audience reaction on the spring tour was quite overwhelming. We met so many inspirational women who wanted to share their stories with us after the show; stories that had us in fits of laughter and stories that had us tears [sic]. Our fantastic new Housewife, Suzanne Shaw, brings loads to the HH party - and that’s not just Hear’Say – haha! I am utterly delighted to be working with Josephine again too and looking forward to meeting more amazing women around the UK.” SUZANNE SHAW is a singer, actress, TV presenter and former popstar – from Hear’Say to the West End (as Roxie in Chicago) to winning the third series of the ITV skating show Dancing On Ice, Suzanne’s many West End credits include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the Rocky Horror Show, Vagina Monologues, Cinderella, Aladdin and more. “I’m really looking forward to the tour of Hormonal Housewives,” says Suzanne. “One of the many things that appealed to me about doing HH was being able to tailor my part to fit around my own real life stories... and I have many!” JOSEPHINE PARTRIDGE is based in south Wales with her husband, two young children and her dog. In 2017 she played the leading role of Marlene in Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls and joined the cast of Hormonal Housewives this year. “It was my first theatrical tour,” says Josephine. “We had a blast every night and the audiences were amazing. I’m delighted to
be going out on tour again and I’m looking forward to Suzanne Shaw joining us – she doesn’t know what she’s in for!” JULIE COOMBE Julie is a writer, actor, comedian and has appeared in numerous productions at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe. Her performance in Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues inspired her to create Hormonal Housewives with producer Michael Harrison and her co-writing husband, John MacIsaac. Julie’s TV credits include BBC TV’s River City; STV’s Take The High Road, while her comedy credits for the BBC include the sketch show Revolver and the sitcom Millport. Director and co-writer JOHN MACISAAC is thrilled to be directing this version of Hormonal Housewives, having co-written the show and seen all the different casts and performances. John is a prolific actor, writer, director and teacher: his numerous theatre credits include Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens (Traverse), Babes in the Woods (Glasgow Pavilion), Jack and the Beanstalk (Ayr Gaiety) and many more. John has written comedy for BBC Radio Scotland’s The WhyFront and Scotland on the Couch and has directed dozens of shows at the Fringe. Performance: Wednesday 6 November 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £27, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth. co.uk
West End Marvel Marisha Wallace heads out on debut UK tour One of the West End and Broadway’s most instantly recognisable voices and beloved leading ladies is heading out on her first ever UK Tour. Marisha Wallace – the sensational star of such smash-hit shows as Dreamgirls, Waitress, Aladdin, The Book of Mormon and, very soon, Hairspray – will play a series of unmissable theatre shows next year, performing at Horsham’s Capitol Theatre on March 13. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday November 1 via www.cuffeandtaylor.com Marisha, who has just completed a critically-acclaimed run in West End hit Waitress and starred alongside Will Smith in Disney’s big screen summer blockbuster Aladdin, said: “I’m so excited to be heading out on my first ever UK Tour. “I fell in love with the UK from the moment I first I stepped on stage here. The warmth and love I’ve received from audiences has been really special and I cannot wait to head out to play theatres around the UK – it’s going to be amazing.” Following her debut UK tour, Marisha will take on the iconic role of Motormouth Maybelle in the eagerly-awaited West End return of Hairspray alongside Michael Ball.
Marisha – whose power-packed new single ‘Fight Like A Woman’ is out now – was born and raised in a small town in North Carolina. But the small town never held down her big city dreams. From glittering New York, her unbelievable talent has taken her around the world. On Broadway, Marisha starred in shows including Disney’s Aladdin, The Book of Mormon and Something Rotten and then here, in the UK, as Effie White in the stellar West End hit Dreamgirls, before following this up as Becky in the unmissable Waitress. Described by The New York Post as “a marvel”, Marisha’s spinetingling rendition of ‘And I Am Telling You’ from Dreamgirls has, quite simply, to be seen and heard to be believed. Inspired by the likes of the late, great Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, Marisha’s voice will pull you from your seat and to your feet. She effortlessly infuses jazz, gospel and R&B with a healthy dose of soul that will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted. Together with her theatre success, this versatile talent has taken on the mainstream music world by performing at the Royal Albert Hall, The London Palladium and Cadogan Hall with such revered international artists as Seal,
James Blunt and Gregory Porter. And Marisha, who released her debut album ‘Soul Holiday’ in 2017, has just enjoyed huge success as Todrick Hall’s special guest at his sold-out shows at The London Palladium and the O2 Ritz Manchester. Her debut tour is presented by concert promoters Cuffe and Taylor. Ben Hatton, director of theatre touring for Cuffe and Taylor,
said: “Marisha Wallace is an undoubted star of the West End and Broadway and her special talent is one that is rightly winning plaudits on both sides of the Atlantic. “We are proud to be presenting Marisha’s debut UK tour and we would advise fans of the West End and musical theatre to get their tickets early, because these shows are likely to be among the must-see events of 2020.”

Female writers sweep the board in playwriting competition
A playwriting competition by Pitchy Breath Theatre Company touring across Surrey and Sussex this November has been won by five writers, four of which are women. Bradley Barlow, Artistic Director of Pitchy Breath Theatre Company, said: “From the future acid wars to an empty train platform, via writer’s block and an intergalactic space party, this year’s competition has brought us a truly brilliant selection of plays. We were overwhelmed with the quality of the plays submitted to us and we’re very excited to share them with our audiences.” Tash Collie impressed the judges with two of her plays being selected for performance. A Loveletter from the Time of Borderism to the Time of Nuclear Fallout looks at a couple approaching their wedding day preparing their speeches but who have their minds are on bigger ideas. Gorgeous Like Something with Ant-
lers takes the audience into the future and asks: if the love of your life begged for a second chance, would you take them back or stick with their best bits? In Limbo from Gaëlle StarkOrdish brings four estranged friends back together when a life-changing decision is made. Crawley-based Elodie Foray’s larger than life Small brings a star and a speck of dust to a party and invites the audience to watch as the pair work out if they can change the universe together. A delayed train makes two women form an unlikely duo on an empty platform in Izzy Radford’s Stationary, with the competition’s only male winner Keir Gilbert-Halladey bringing us Block, in which the Ghosts of Writer’s Block Past, Present and Future visit a playwright battling with their latest creation. Pitchy Breath are currently working with local directors to bring all six plays to life, with 13 performers from Crawley and Horsham impressing the directors in recent open auditions. For more than half the performers, this will be the first time they’ve performed with Pitchy Breath. Time and Time Again will be staged between 3-9 November across Sussex and Surrey, and tickets are on sale now at www. pitchybreath.co.uk

Questions to ask when selling your home Selling your home is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. The financial implications are substantial and it could be a stressful experience. There are lots of things to consider, not least which estate agent to help you through process. Here are 5 questions you should ask your estate agent when deciding to sell your home...
1. What will you charge? There’s never been more choice when choosing an estate agent to sell your home. From traditional high street agents, to online services and hybrids, knowing which is best can be a difficult decision. Remember to ask if the fee is all-inclusive and whether it is paid upfront or at the end of the process.
2. How long am I tied in for? Before signing on the dotted line, establish how long you will be tied to their contract. Most agents will stipulate that your property remains with them as a sole agency for a number of weeks. Once that initial period is up, if your property hasn’t been sold you can change agents or market with more than one agent.
3. What asking price should I set?
Farhalls Crescent – For Sale £585,000 Offering all the space a growing family could need, this bright and spacious four bedroom detached house is located in a popular residential area only a few minutes’ walk from Littlehaven station.
The beauty of traditional high street agents is the knowledge they have regarding the local market. While the asking price decision is ultimately yours, having the full picture from a well informed and knowledgeable agent can really help.
4. Is my property ready to be sold? Getting your agent’s opinion on your property and its condition is a great way to prepare for the marketing process. The agent should know the kind of decor that is appealing to buyers in your area and be able to suggest improvements to make it appeal to more buyers.
5. Is it the best time to sell a house in the UK?
The property has been expertly extended to create a large main living room with adjoining dining area both giving direct access to the secluded rear garden. The stunning refitted kitchen has been finished to an exceptional standard, with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and ample worktop space. Upstairs you will find the large family bathroom, an en-suite shower room and all the bedrooms are complemented by fitted wardrobes.

Superb Humphreys hat trick in vain for Horsham Saturday October 26 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham Men’s 1st XI 4 6 Lewes Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This entertaining ten goal bottom of the table clash, with both sides seeking an elusive first win of the season, ultimately went against Horsham, the game following a similar pattern to recent encounters, with Horsham taking an early lead, and looking promising, only to be undone by a brief but devastating episode of leaky defence. And, it was particularly galling that Joey Humphreys’ superb hat trick went unrewarded, when it deserved to earn points for his side. With former Horsham goalkeeper and Captain, Andy Isaacs, now with Lewes, looking on after being sidelined by a bicycle accident in London, Horsham went in front when Ed Marsh broke through down the left to send across a pin point pass for the awaiting Humphreys to chip in. Lewes, though, kept pressing with Richard Hancock in the home goal having to be at his very best to keep out four short corners in quick succession. In increasingly damp conditions, further Lewes attacks followed, with another short being scrambled clear. Horsham had a set piece of their own, but Lewes’ sixth short was eventually converted after it had been parried initially. A
seemingly harsh yellow card temporarily reduced Horsham to ten men ahead of yet another short for the visitors – disputed – enabling them to lead, 2-1, at the interval. On the resumption Lewes immediately smashed in, before first Humphreys and then Marsh were both denied. A further Lewes short then heralded a mini collapse, the visitors breaking through to go 4-1 up. Then, with more incursions putting Horsham’s young back line under strain, Lewes added to their tally. But, to their great credit, Horsham responded well, an exceptional solo effort from Humphreys culminating with him nutmegging the Lewes keeper. Lewes, brought up their total of shorts to a round dozen, but Humphreys was undaunted, notching up his brilliant hat trick at 3-5. A truly fortuitous Lewes response increased their lead when a diving forward made mid air contact with the ball at full stretch, somehow getting it past the advancing Hancock. However, Horsham were not quite done, Zak Chinn promptly tapping in for the final 4-6 score line. The ten goal display was certainly exciting, but, despite scoring four times – usually enough to win – Horsham had given away too much to secure a sought-after victory. On Saturday Horsham, looking to escape from the basement, venture into East Sussex to taken on eighth-placed Eastbourne at The Saffrons.
Luckless Horsham Ladies shaded by Bedford Saturday October 26 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Bedford 2 0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Ladies endured their 150 mile round trip to and from Bedfordshire, battling against horrendous M25 and M1 traffic, insult being added to injury when, having played well again, and deserving to share the points, they came away empty handed. After an even, goal-less first half, the hosts took the lead with a well-taken short corner, giving experienced Horsham goalkeeper Hannah Jackson no chance. Horsham then had a great passage of play, only to be more than disappointed when a penalty flick was harshly awarded against them, doubling fifth-placed
Bedford’s lead after Gill Adams had pulled off a brilliant, seemingly fair tackle, Horsham’s Fran Crossley telling the District Post: “A draw would have been a fairer reflection of the game, especially as we were so much better defensively. But, we didn’t give up and had a fabulous last quarter, so, although it was irksome to travel so far for nothing, there were plenty of positives to take into our next game – on Saturday week (November 9th) at Broadbridge Heath (14.00).” The Ipswich game is target win for Horsham, with the Suffolk side bottom of the league and point-less. Wimbledon top the table, their five wins from five starts, putting them clear of current runner up Southgate. Horsham are in the penultimate berth, but on level points with the two teams above them – Canterbury and Chelmsford.

Saturday October 26 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 3 17 Camberley Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter In truly appalling conditions last Saturday Horsham faced the harsh reality of competing in the upper reaches of the tough London 1 South League, slipping to their initial home defeat of the season – try-less for the first time
this campaign - against a strong Camberley side harbouring highly credible promotion ambitions. The visitors immediately put Horsham under the cosh with pressurised possession, but Horsham opened the scoring with a Tom Johnson penalty. That was, however, as good as it got for the Green & Whites, determined, effective defence keeping them at bay. As ever, Horsham played with plenty of fighting spirit, but the persistent, wind-assisted driving rain
made accurate ball handling a real challenge. With Horsham conceding set pieces, Camberley made the line, unconverted, a subsequent penalty try just before the interval, leaving Horsham in arrears, 3-12. With the weather deteriorating even further after the break, testing the resolve of players, officials and supporters alike, champagne, continuous rugby was impossible, the final whistle coming as something of a relief after Camberley had added a further try towards the end of the proceedings, to win 3-17. Post match, Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “Not the best game of rugby to watch! In the first half we gave away too many penalties, granting field position to a very effective forward unit, which eventually bore fruit for Camberley, with wind advantage to come. Our second half was much better, and although we didn’t score we had much more possession, but we missed a couple of real try-scoring opportunities, clear areas for us to focus on in such conditions and we will learn from the experience. A special mention to two players – Rich Tredgett, whom we called up out of retirement on Saturday morning when skipper Jamie Redmayne pulled out – and, Conor Riley, making his first team debut on the wing, showing glimpses that he’s up to this level of rugby with a couple of very effective tackles. Mike Watts was Man of the Match for his all-round contributions.” After a break this Saturday, Horsham resume league action on November 9th with a trip to Regent’s Park to take on fellow promoted Belsize Park, who at sixth, are one spot below Horsham. Meanwhile, in a tightly bunched table, Westcombe Park is top on level pegging with Havant, shading Camberley (third) by two points.
Broadbridge Heath bow out in close RUR Cup tie Tuesday October 29 – Sussex Principal RUR Charity Cup – Round 2 Broadbridge Heath 3 4 AFC Uckfield Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After Heath visited muddy AFC Uckfield in the league last Saturday, when they were cruelly undone in added time by the single goal of the match, the East Sussex side came to the Countryside Stadium on Tuesday, eliminating Heath from the RUR Cup, Heath being shaded by the odd goal in seven. The two sides are next to one another in the league and there was little to choose between them in the cup encounter, Uckfield winning the first half and Heath bossing the second. Uckfield took the lead in the fifth minute, Matt McClean scoring a close range, scrappy goal. Heath keeper Mitchell Bromage then rushed out to smother another incursion before Bailo Camara blazed over. But, Heath soon equalised through Jamie Taylor. Uckfield responded, searing the crossbar before a surprising miss by two of their players awaiting a dangerous
cross, but failing to make contact. Chances came and went at either end, before McClean was brought down in the box, Liam Baitup converting the well taken penalty. Heath followed up with two opportunities, but Tim Cook crashed over ahead of Taylor’s excellent strike going marginally wide. Then, just before half time, a telling build up enabled Regan Smith to put the ball in at the near post to leave Heath trailing 1-3 at the break. Heath returned in livelier mode, Jamie Wanstall unleashing a promising strike, only to see it well saved by visiting keeper Phil Hawkins. Camara was then floored, the free kick ending on the roof of the net. But, Uckfield soon scored again after Dee Okojie had brought out the best in Bromage, who pushed the ball off for a corner, which Baitup scrambled in. A Heath corner and free kick came to nothing, ahead of two good saves from Bromage, and Baitup’s distant strike going just past the post. Heath seemed to have lost momentum and were not retaining the ball – until Wanstall pulled back a goal, and when sub Jake Hull promptly ran through down the left and fired in a superb strike, Heath had suddenly clawed their way back into real conten-
tion at 3-4 with 10 minutes of normal time left. They then surged forward, Bromage taking a free kick from the half way line, before he had to rush out to dive to quell an Uckfield foray. Heath were now playing with much more urgency, however a corner and two promising free kicks evaporated just ahead of the final whistle, Uckfield taking the game. With no fixture for Heath on Saturday – the scheduled trip to Lancing having been postponed due to their FA Vase commitment they return to action, at home, on bonfire night, against Peacehaven & Telscombe in the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup. After another home game – against leaders Eastbourne Town in the league on Saturday November 9th – Heath welcome Charlton Athletic’s U23 side on Tuesday 12th (7.15 kick off). Run by BBH resident Steve Avory, whose son Scott was a first team regular for Heath, the prestigious Charlton Academy is a proven development conveyor belt into the upper echelons of football, with currently 13 former Academy players in the top two English divisions, making the U23’s visit an opportunity to see a quality team of future stars.

Subdued Horsham exit FA Trophy
Photos by John Lines Saturday October 26 – Buildbase FA Trophy – 2nd Qualifying Round Haringey Borough 3 0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After the impressive start to their league season following promotion, placing them a highly creditable second, much-changed Horsham suffered a setback last Saturday, bowing out of the FA Trophy at Haringey Borough’s Coles Park in North London’s Wood Green. The hosts are currently six spots below Horsham in the table, but that mattered not, with the Hornets unable to replicate their early season form. Following the abandonment of Haringey’s FA Cup game against Yeovil Town the previous Saturday because of alleged racism directed at goalkeeper Valary Pajetat, Horsham warmed up in ‘United Against Racism’ tops and formed a guard of honour. Horsham supporters were delighted to see Gary Charman back in the colours for the first time in four years, and, with the replay

against Yeovil beckoning, Haringey also started with a re-jigged line up, but, they nevertheless treated the Hornets’ uninspiring showing to an object lesson on how to create and maintain pressure. Horsham, though, promised early on, only for Pajetat to deny Zack Newton. Then Horsham keeper George Bentley was booked for flooring the ever-threatening Michael Ademiluyi away from the penalty area, the resultant free kick going astray. With Horsham still struggling to move up through the gears, Haringey went ahead just beyond the mid point of the first half when Ademiluyi latched onto a distant supply to put the ball out of Bentley’s reach. However, Bentley soon prevented Haringey from doubling their lead when his quick reaction kept Chidubeh Onokwai at bay. Lee Harding then seemed to be fouled when competing for overhead supremacy, but play continued without sanction. With half time approaching, Horsham were devastated to concede another goal, a double blow because a free kick crashed into Charman’s face, terminating his involvement, salt
being rubbed in when the ball cruelly ended up with Onokwai, who made no mistake from close quarters. Resuming two goals adrift, Horsham again considered themselves unfortunate when Newton was upended with play waved on. The game was then put to bed, ten minutes into the second half, when a long through ball was collected by Jorge Djassi Sambu to put Haringey three up. And, it might have got even worse, but for Djassi Sambu’s strike being repelled by the woodwork. Horsham finally retaliated but Jack Brivio went too aerial before Pajetat somehow averted Lee Harding’s goal-bound shot, the keeper going on to complete more top class saves in the dying minutes, including pushing away Charlie Harris’ penalty, keeping out Newton’s attempt from the rebound and then brilliantly deflecting Harry Mills’ blast. With Horsham looking to exact revenge, they make their way back to North London this Saturday for a league encounter with Haringey Borough.
YMCA defy rain for much needed win Saturday October 26 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Lingfield 3 4 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA contended with the inhospitable conditions the better of the two sides at Lingfield last Saturday, coming away with a hard fought win with especial thanks to Tony Nwachukwu for his stunning first half hat trick. Nwachukwu put YM in front on the quarter of an hour mark, but Lingfield soon restored parity through Ben Connelly. However, YM immediately re-took the lead with Nwachukwu’s second goal, who then promptly notched up his hat trick, only for Connelly to score again just before the break. Resuming with YM 3-2 up, Lingfield kept pressing, reaping the rewards when Daniel Field levelled the scores with an hour on the clock. YM, though, were not to be denied, Jack Ryder netting their fourth
goal, following which they successfully kept Lingfield at bay for the final twenty minutes, Tim Hewlett telling the District Post: “In almost continuous rain the very wet pitch with longish grass made passing football extremely difficult, with the slippery surface leading to a number of misjudged tackles. YM adapted well to the conditions, and Tony Nwachukwu’s opportunism in front of goal coupled with the side’s ability to withstand a strong second half showing by Lingfield gained us three much-need points. Tony was our undisputed Man of the Match for his excellent hat trick, including an intuitive back heel for our third. Hats off to the match officials for the commendable way that they controlled the game in the most challenging weather-induced circumstances.” On Saturday YM, currently 15th, are on the road yet again, with a visit to fifth-placed Steyning Town. Meanwhile, at the top of the table, Eastbourne Town is 7 points clear of Lancing, with Loxwood bottom, one point behind Pagham and three shy of Hassocks.
Broadbridge Heath cruelly robbed by very late goal Saturday October 26 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division AFC Uckfield Town 1 0 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Depleted Broadbridge Heath ventured to The Oaks in the absence of five key defenders, plus Gary Charman playing for Horsham, Cameron Watts sidelined by sickness and Ben Whitely not available, resulting in the team taking the field with six players under the age of 21. In less than pleasant conditions, the soaking pitch was passed fit for play at 1.30, subject to review if conditions deteriorated as the game progressed. Accurate passing football was
virtually impossible, but Uckfield’s perpetual tormenter, Bailo Camara was able to make forays down the right, testing both Alfie Jones and Andy Waddingham with crosses, Ellis Cormack heading wide. And, despite the difficult state of the pitch, Heath’s Tim Cook managed to unleash a hot shot, only for Uckfield keeper Phil Hawkins to deflect the ball away, ahead of Jamie Taylor firing just wide. Jake Hull then came equally close, with his centre almost resulting in an own goal. Heath, though, felt aggrieved when Waddingham and Jones both appeared to be fouled, but without redress, the score remaining goal-less at the break. The weather worsened in the second half, but the players battled on with each side somehow
creating opportunities, Hull, Max Howell and Roberto Carvalho all seeing their efforts come to nought. With action switching to the other end, Waddingham and Heath goalkeeper Mitchell Bromage both repelled Liam Baitup. Then, with time fast running out, Taylor was unable to finalise Hawkins’ misplaced kick, before the hosts launched a last ditch attack on the break, Baitup stunning Heath, snatching the win by heading in Camara’s supply from close range, when a draw would have been a fairer outcome. There was still just time for one last Heath attack, but Uckfield grabbed all three points. Heath will be hoping for an easier home pitch and improved availability when the two sides meet in the RUR cup.
