Two Horsham stabbings in as many weeks shock residents martin read
Reporter
At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a
pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of
recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

After the huge success of Horsham Children’s Parade 2019, the organisers are determined to make the magic happen again in 2020! In July this year, the parade saw more than 700 children from 17 district schools showcase their ‘Art & Artist’ inspired creations, through the streets of Horsham, to the delight of hundreds of spectators. A truly fun community experience, it was a joyous spectacle of
colourful costumes, giant models, upbeat music and imaginative dance enjoyed by all. It’s hardly surprising then that more than 20 district schools and other youth groups have already registered to take part in 2020. More than just a parade, the event also aims to provide the wider community, who are not participating in the main event, with the opportunity to get creative – be that painting at an easel, making a

mask or modelling some clay. One way organisers want to do this is by delivering a range of creative activities in their special largescale marquee at the parade end in Horsham Park. Aleida Strowger, Director of Happy Accidents CIC, the not-forprofit arts organisation behind the parade, explained: “We’re seeking funding for the parade itself through sponsorship and grants, but we’d love some support from the people of Horsham District to deliver the community marquee so that we can put on a mini exhibition and some fun creative activities for the whole community in Horsham Park after the parade. In 2019, the marquee was part of the ever-popular Funday Sunday, run by Rotary Club of Horsham and we’re very much hoping that we’ll be able to team up again in 2020. “We got some wonderful feedback about the marquee activities in 2019: ‘I loved making the selfie frame’, ‘100/100 for arty tent!’, ‘Kids had fun, so did I’, ‘Really good creative fun.’ – so we’d love to be able to deliver it again in 2020. “As part of our West Sussex Crowd crowdfunding campaign, we have applied for the West Sussex County Council’s Community Initiative Fund, which is in place to support projects like this. Before they allocate any funding, however,
they need to know that the projects they support have community support too. The campaign is already doing really well, but we still need more support – the more pledges we get from the public, the more likely it is that the project will receive funding.” If you’d like to support this worthwhile project, head over to West Sussex Crowd (https://www. spacehive.com/horsham-childrens-parade-2020) to pledge a donation before November 30. There was a whole lot of spooky fun and antics going on for Halloween in Horsham Town Centre on 31 October as the town hosted its annual Halloween party for younger children organised by Horsham District Council and partners. Free children’s activities clustered around the Carfax bandstand with event partners Horsham Hub Family Centres and Horsham Churches Together (HCT) busy all day alongside performances from ‘Rebecca’ the story telling witch and outrageous bubble fun from ‘Bubble Joe’. Thanks to the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 team, there were appearances in the morning by The Gruffalo, creating a deal of excitement as children spotted the famous character. A pumpkin trail organised by HCT ran across a Halloween themed market featuring many
Carfax traders who really got into the spirit of the day, supported by organisers Horsham Markets. These colourful stalls were accompanied by children’s rides from ML Pleasure Fairs, a face painter and the ongoing Rotary Trick or Treat Trail across the town, all adding to the fun on offer. In the afternoon, a Halloween costume parade, starting from the Bishopric Stream, attracted around fifty youngsters and their carers led by the ‘Story Witch’ through West Street to the Carfax Bandstand. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke commented: “This was another great event staged by the Council and its various partners. “It encouraged many people to come into the town to enjoy the fun, creating lots of extra busi-
ness for local traders. It was particularly good to see all the usual Thursday market traders entering into the spirit of the day in their amazing costumes with their Halloween themed wares.” Two winning costumes were chosen by the Witch and Hayleigh, Horsham Manager of sponsor Chococos, to receive chocolate prizes, the winners were Nistor as a vampire and Ottilie as a young witch. Hayleigh from Chococo was delighted with the turnout saying: “There were so many brilliant costumes and some amazing make up, it was really difficult to choose the winners. Halloween seems to get bigger every year and I think it’s great that the town can put on an event like this. It helps businesses like ours to reach out to even more people to give them a great experience.”

Horsham veteran joins RAF Benevolent Fund to celebrate its centenary
A veteran from Horsham joined the RAF Benevolent Fund to celebrate the charity’s 100th anniversary, last month. It marked the
occasion by hosting an afternoon tea at the RAF Club followed by a reception at St James’s Palace hosted by the charity’s President,
His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent. The charity brought together 10 generations of beneficiaries for

a one-off photoshoot, including Senior Aircraftman Dan Pelling. 39-year-old Dan’s life changed forever when a hit and run accident in 2000 left him paralysed from the chest down. The RAF Benevolent Fund purchased a house for Dan through its Housing Trust in 2003. This allowed him to move into a specially adapted bungalow close to his family. More recently, it provided accessible kitchen units and landscaped the garden so it’s easier for him to manoeuvre in his wheelchair. Dan said: “It’s not every day you get to invited to a 100th birthday party, so I’m proud to be have been able to be a part of this important day. You have a lot to deal with when you have a disability, but it’s reassuring to know I’ll always have the Fund’s support.” As the charity marks its centenary, the RAF Benevolent Fund has launched a major campaign calling on the public to ‘Join the Search. Change a Life.’ The Fund is asking the public to help them find individuals who have served in the RAF, or their partners, and may now be in need. The charity believes there are up to 100,000, mainly older, members of the RAF
Family in urgent need of support but are not seeking it. Air Vice-Marshal David Murray, Chief Executive of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “We are incredibly proud to be the RAF’s oldest friend. Since 1919, we have helped people affected by two World Wars and all manner of other conflicts, as well as those whose lives have been turned upside down away from battle. “But we know that we can do more. Last year, we supported over 53,000 people, but there are so many others who are eligible for our support and in need. Often, these are people who undertook National Service and, wrongly, don’t think of themselves as part of the RAF Family. But they did their bit and we all have a responsibility to ensure these people access the life-changing support that is rightfully theirs.” Picture: Dan (fourthfrom the right) and other members of the RAF family that the Fund has supported. Coolham Airfield’s poignant new fixture - a place to ‘sit and contemplate’ In June this year, the service and sacrifices of servicemen based at Coolham airfield was remembered and commemorated with the D-Day 75 year anniversary commemorative walk around the airfield. Over the same weekend, two commemorative information boards were erected; one on the airfield itself, and the other by the Memorial, adjacent to the Selsey Arms pub at Coolham crossroads. The information boards were built and erected by the Shipley Men’s Shed. The Shedders have since then continued to maintain the information boards and the site of the fifteen oak trees planted 25 years ago. The oak trees were planted in memory of the fifteen servicemen who lost their lives in the few months, before and after D-day, that the airfield was operational. Local man, Bob Phillips remembers the excitement (as a young lad) of watching the bustling activities of this temporary airfield as it went about its vital business supporting the Allied invasion of France. Bob still lives on the edge of what was the airfield, and when one of his oak trees was brought down in the great storm of 1997, he stored the timber, donating recently the very last two planks to the Shipley Men’s Shed. From this oak, the Shedders have now fashioned a rustic bench which has been placed next to the fifteen oak trees, facing south across the airfield towards the Normandy landing grounds. Walkers and visitors may now sit in quiet contemplation at
this tranquil spot and take in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Richard Harris is a Trustee of the Horsham and Shipley Community Project which includes, among many activities, the Shipley Men’s Shed: “We wanted to create a resting place for walkers to read the information board and then take a moment. And when Bob came forward with this timber from one of only a few oak trees that survived the construction of the airfield, we had to use it. I wish to thank Bob for the timber and the lovely guys in our Men’s Shed who have created the bench. “We hope it will be used by walkers who will walk the two miles of runway perimeter, read our information boards and sit, and contemplate the service and sacrifice of those young men all those years ago.” Visitors may park at The Selsey Arms, Coolham, visit the memorial, then walk 100 yards down the Thakeham Road and access the site using the signposted footpath. Horsham remembers 2019
The War Memorial in the Carfax will be the focus of this year’s Remembrance Sunday service in Horsham at 11am on Sunday (10 November). Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives in war. It was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War, the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation’s dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn them. The timings for the service will see the Parade arrive at Horsham’s War Memorial at approximately

10.50am on Sunday 10 November. Led by The Rev Alan Mayer, the service will begin with the hymn ‘O God Our Help in Ages Past’. This will be followed by The Last Post. The vicar will then lead the Exhortation: ‘They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.’ The two minutes silence, in memory of the fallen, will then be held at 11am. The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Kate Rowbottom, will lead the wreath laying on behalf of the people of the Horsham district. She will be followed by Mr Nigel Caplin, Chairman of the Royal
British Legion Horsham Branch. Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations will then lay their wreaths, each as a mark of solemn respect. When the last wreath has been laid, the Parade Marshall will call the Parade to attention and one verse of the National Anthem will be sung. A blessing will mark the end of the service at the War Memorial. A church service will follow at the Parish Church of St. Mary The Virgin in the Causeway, Horsham to which everyone is invited. After the service, the Parade will leave the Causeway and march, via South Street, back through the Carfax where the salute will be taken by Cllr Kate Rowbottom and Mr Nigel Caplin. Working with the Church and Horsham District Council, the Royal British Legion is the main local organiser of Horsham’s Remembrance Sunday service. A number of Remembrance Sunday services take place throughout the Horsham district on this day. For those who wish to remember the fallen at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” there will also be a short service at the Carfax Memorial on Monday 11 November at 11am. Additionally, Horsham Post Office has now repositioned its Honours Board from the town centre to its Hurst Road sorting office and the Horsham branch of the Royal British Legion will be organising a service of dedication for the board on Saturday 16 November at 3pm, to which everyone is invited.
Collyer’s Casualties: Horsham Grammar School in Two World Wars
A new book has been released, providing detailed individual profiles in chronological order of more than 136 former pupils who attended Horsham Grammar School (The College of Richard Collyer) to later serve as military personnel and perished during the Great War for Civilisation of 1914 - 1919, and those who became casualties in the Second World War of 1939 - 1945. A limited edition of 250 copies, this hard back volume of some 762 pages, and 390 photographs and many maps, illustrates major offensives, battles and individual unit actions describing where the casualties fought and died. A large number of War Diaries, Squadron Operational Daily Records, primary sources official histories and individual first-hand accounts have
been researched over many years and incorporated to complete the volume. This unique work is of particular interest to relatives of the fallen and past pupils of the School. It is also a potential source book to family and amateur historians, educational authorities, research students, and all people who have an interest in military and social history, as well as those who have a genuine regard to learn more of Horsham’s past and its fine Grammar School. Priced at £35.00 per copy the author Gary Cooper will be signing his work on Saturday 9th November, from 10.00am -12.30pm at the Horsham Museum. Further copies will continue to be available at the Museum.
Metrobus is offering free travel to veterans and serving members of the armed forces this Remembrance Sunday (November 10). Anyone wearing their military service medals or carrying a military ID card can travel free all day on Remembrance Sunday on the company’s bus network, across Brighton & Hove, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. The company has also given free travel to poppy sellers until 21 November, in support of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. About 250 buses - more than half the fleet - also have poppies on the front of them. Metrobus’ Managing Director Martin Harris said he wanted to make travelling to Remembrance Day services, parades and wreath laying as convenient as possible. Martin explained: “Remem-
brance Sunday is a time for communities to come together and acknowledge the debt the nation owes the armed forces, while looking towards the future with hope. “Poppy sellers do an amazing job going out selling poppies in rain, hail or shine, and this is a small way we can thank them for their selfless and constant service. We’re also proud to support the Royal British Legion and the important work they do, giving lifelong support to the serving and ex-serving armed forces’ community and their families.” “The free travel for veterans and current service personnel also being offered will support members of the armed forces without their own transport to get to their local remembrance services and get out into their communities.”
Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War Bus company backs Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal
The first decade after the First World War was one of great change throughout Britain, and Horsham was no exception. A new exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War, will look at the developments and events that took place during the 1920s, and how they affected the town and the people that lived here. After 4 long years of war, on 11th November 1918 the notification that an Armistice had been signed arrived in Horsham, via telephone. Word quickly spread around the town that the war was over, and the streets buzzed with
excitement and rejoicing. After the initial celebrations Britain entered a period of adjustment. In Horsham, around 420 men aged 16-50 had been killed, a significant number for this small community. After the war, there was a widespread desire to get back to normal. By 1918, people had been desperate for peace, yet the reality of the post-war world was one of continued international conflict, economic stagnation, disrupted trade, and social unrest. The early 1920s saw increased leisure time, increased wages, cheaper goods and major changes in fashion and social permissiveness. The later years of the decade,
in contrast, saw the General Strike of 1926 and the economic crash of 1929. It was certainly a time of great change and many contrasts. The wealth of items on display in Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War from the Museum’s collections, that date from the 1920s, help to demonstrate some of these developments, and highlight what life was like for the people of Horsham at the time. Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War will run from 9 November 2019 to 11 January 2020. For more information, see www. horshammuseum.org Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm, free admission.

‘pawtraits’, the calendar includes stories of dogs that have overcome the odds and are now settled into their new homes, with sales of the calendar raising funds for the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, one of the largest charities dedicated to dog health and welfare in the UK. Eight-year-old Akita, Kiwi, came a long way from living in sad conditions in Cardiff to becoming the queen of her new owner’s home. Kiwi spent the first years of her life with a neglectful owner and ended up being rescued by the Akita Rescue and Welfare UK when she was just two years old. Kiwi spent over a year in rescue before she found her forever home with Dan Pook-Barnes. “When I got Kiwi she was so scared of everything,” said Dan, who has another Akita. “But she has grown and found her voice,
quite literally. She barks now and is clearly more confident. “She’s so loving and so gentle and has come such a long way. I think it has a lot to do with her being with my other Akita, they’re inseparable.” Dan believes that Kiwi representing her breed in the calendar is important to change the perception of Akitas: “I think Akitas are a very misunderstood breed. All you tend to see in the media is that they’re big and dangerous. But really they are sweet and very loyal. “I’m thrilled Kiwi is featuring in the calendar too to help raise awareness and funds for other rescue dogs who need it.” Akita Rescue and Welfare UK, which rescued Kiwi, doesn’t only help with re-homing, but also provides information and guidance for owners on behaviour, training, diet and health of the breed. The centre works with each Akita individually, assessing its past and behaviour to ensure they find the right new home. Each of the rescue organisations featured in the calendar receive a donation from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, and Akita Rescue and Welfare UK plans to put the funds towards transport costs associated with re-homing, as well as health checks. Professor Steve Dean, Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, said: “Through these beautiful photographs, we can showcase all these special dogs

and their wonderful personalities, while highlighting the importance of the work that rescue welfare organisations do for hundreds of dogs across the country. “The welfare organisations work so hard to find these dogs their forever homes and give them a second chance at life. The re-homing stories in the calendar highlight the importance of having a breed that matches your lifestyle, as well as the fulfilling nature of providing a home for a dog in need. “It is so important that when buying a dog, owners do their research thoroughly in order to ensure they are buying the right dog for their lifestyle to help prevent high numbers of dogs ending up in rescue.” Kiwi features alongside 11 other rescue dogs in the Kennel Club Breed Rescue calendar, which was launched at Discover Dogs in London in October and is now on sale via the Kennel Club’s website. The money raised through the sale of the calendars will enable the Kennel Club Charitable Trust to continue to make a difference for dogs in 2020, by funding a wide variety of work ranging from research into canine diseases, supporting rescue centres and dog welfare organisations and training support dogs – all of which give dogs and their owners a healthier, happier life. The Kennel Club Breed Rescue costs £5 and is now available at the Kennel Club online shop.
Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert has, this week, released a statement informing his constituents of his decision to ‘move on’ after nearly 15 years in the role. The full statement is as follows: Dear Constituent I am writing to let you know that I have decided not to stand again as the Parliamentary Candidate for Arundel & South Downs. This has been a difficult decision, but after nearly 15 years as MP for this wonderful constituency I feel that this is the right time to move on. I will be focusing on my new role as Chairman of the Countryside Alliance; on the think tank which I chair, The Project for Modern Democracy, and on my global work on tuberculosis and equality. I am proud of the work I have done in Parliament, as a Shadow Cabinet Member and Minister, and in the constituency. I have
done my best to stand up for local communities, and I will always be passionate about the countryside and in particular the South Downs which I have grown to love. I will continue to give my loyal support to the Prime Minister and the Conservative Party. While I was one of the leaders of the remain campaign, I strongly believe it is the national and democratic interest to deliver the outcome of the referendum, and that is why I consistently voted for a deal. I am also confident that Boris Johnson is committed to maintaining Britain’s leadership position on helping the poorest countries in the world; to supporting LGBT+ rights at home and abroad, and to building an inclusive Conservatism which can appeal to the whole country. A vote for any Party other than the Conservatives will carry the same risk: that Jeremy Corbyn enters Downing Street, which would be devastating for our country. That is why I hope that Arundel & South Downs will continue to return a Conservative Member of Parliament, and I look forward to supporting my successor in the weeks and months ahead. I am immensely grateful for the support and friendship which local people have given Jason and me, and I will miss working for the constituency a great deal. It has been my honour to be your elected representative. With best wishes. Yours sincerely NICK HERBERT

Andrew Collins crowned Pumpkin King of Warnham
The sixth annual Warnham Invitation Challenge pumpkin growing competition attracted another large field, the 30 entrants yielding a spectacular crop of heavyweight orange-gold fruits of all shapes and sizes, with the weigh-in again taking place at the village’s Greets Inn in Friday Street. Organiser Alan Dixon told the District Post: “I get the plants – Atlanta variety - from a nursery in Felbridge and issue one to each of

the entrants to ensure that they all start on level pegging. After that I leave it up to them, they all have their own methods and techniques.” The pumpkins, some weighing more than their owners, arrived at The Greets in wheel barrows and were loaded in through the side door for the weighing ceremony, starting with the smallest fruit, with a cursory check to eliminate any unlikely supermarket ringers. Andrew Collins’ renovated Avery platform scales from the 1930s were used, and, fittingly, Andrew was this year’s champion with his 163 pound specimen - in excess of 11 and a half stone, a good adult weight. The specimen had been tenderly nurtured with aid from his father, Andrew telling us: “This was my third attempt and I was quietly confident. After previous disappointments I vowed to be back, and with the experience gained I knew what was needed: deep rich compost, with plenty of food, light and water – and a bit of luck!” Pumpkin growing is an international sport - very popular in the USA, where, as in Canada, pumpkin pies are also an essential component of Thanksgiving
Day. In Australia and New Zealand pumpkins are prized for roasting and in Chile and South America they are a vital ingredient in soups and casseroles. And, pumpkin juice is the favourite tipple of the students of the Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft. Hardly surprising, then, that pumpkin folklore and history goes back a very long way with preserved Mexican seeds dated from 5000 BC. The species is native to North America and pumpkin growing contests are extremely serious business around the world with pedigree seeds exchanging hands for the price of a good holiday, incredibly resulting in specimens weighing over a ton. At Halloween – All Hallow’s Eve – when the departed are traditionally remembered, pumpkins are still hollowed out and lit internally to ward off evil spirits, and the Warnham pumpkins will be carved by Alan Dixon and put on display in Friday Street. Andrew Collins wins the muchcoveted cup and a meal for two at the iconic Greets, one of the few traditional hostelries still surviving, landlord Duncan Entwistle saying: “We’ve had another excellent evening here – its been really busy. Great fun!”
New Discovery Trail declared open at Warnham Local Nature Reserve with woodland celebrity Warnham Local Nature Reserve’s latest attraction was officially declared open on Friday (1 November) with the help of woodland celebrity The Gruffalo. The Reserve’s new Discovery Trail, designed for visitors of all ages, follows the paths and boardwalks that surround the Reserve’s millpond. It is packed with information about the wildlife, flora and fauna that call the Reserve home. There are stories from the site’s history, as well as a host of fun facts designed to appeal to all ages. Our younger visitors have the chance to become ‘Junior Trail Detectives’ by completing the trail, finding six hidden rubbing plates and completing the quizzes and puzzles all aimed at providing a fun introduction to the life on the Reserve and inspiring the next generation to learn about how to protect it. Additionally, as part of the Trail there are two special new sculptures: the Bat Bothy and the Tri-Helix which were both created as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 ‘Field Notes from Warnham’ project, leaving a lasting legacy of the year of celebrations. Special woodland celebrity
visitor, The Gruffalo, was at the site to help with proceedings and welcome the visitors. The Discovery Trail forms an initial part of a larger project, the Discovery Hub Project, which is being partly funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development who support investment in public recreational infrastructure. The Discovery Hub and the creation of a Shelley themed garden at the entrance to the Reserve will be opened in 2020. With a long history of being biodiversity rich, Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of the most significant sites in the county for wildlife and flora. The Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre positions the Reserve in third place in terms of being species rich due to the wide range of habitats that are nurtured there.

jected 5-year housing delivery figures, their Plan significantly relieves the pressure on villages which are still working hard to put neighbourhood plans in place. He also noted the harm to heritage assets located next to the field. Phil Johnson, Chairman CPRH, said: “We were waiting with bated breath for the decision, so much hangs on it. People were concerned that it would open the door to a flood of development in our countryside. “We recognise that more houses are needed, but we want them built in the right place. This wasn’t it.” The decision was met with relief and joy. The Henfield neighbourhood plan, which has been in development for 3 years, can now proceed to a final consultation which is expected to start before Christmas. Steve Bailey, a resident who lives adjacent to the threatened field, said: “It is so uplifting to look out at the South Downs and know that those amazing countryside views will still be there tomorrow.” Mr Herbert said: “I was so pleased that local people won this and was delighted to support their campaign. Too often neighbourhood plans have been undermined by developers, not least in Henfield, so it was great that the community came together to fight their corner successfully in this case.”

Arundel & South Downs MP Nick Herbert joined Henfield residents on Sunday morning (3 November) to celebrate a successful campaign victory over developers who sought to build on a field in the village. The proposal from Fairfax Properties, to build 42 houses on a site overlooking the South Downs, was initially rejected by Horsham District Council. The decision was swiftly appealed by the developer and a 4-day public inquiry took place in August, with the Inspector concluding that the development should not be granted permission. The community, led by the Campaign to Protect Rural Henfield (CPRH), rallied to oppose the plans and added their voices at the inquiry. They pointed out that the Henfield neighbourhood plan should be completed before any new sites can be determined. Mr Herbert submitted a strong statement to the inquiry pointing out that “the whole point of neighbourhood planning is to allow the community, rather than developers, to determine where development should take place”, adding “it is wrong when developers game the system.” Horsham District Council stated in their evidence to the inquiry that neighbourhood plans are fundamental to the District’s own Local Plan, “not a bolt-on extra”. The Inspector’s decision noted that even though Horsham has a “modest shortfall” in its pro-
some significant changes to the business, including the business’s rename and rebrand, we are thrilled to be shortlisted as finalists at the BM Awards. We are really excited to find out who the winners will be and are keeping everything crossed for a successful outcome for NYEs.” The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony hosted by double Olympic gold medallist, Dame Kelly Holmes OBE, in London on 22 November 2019.

As the newly re-developed Piries Place takes shape, news of ‘The M Bar’ circulated earlier this month and was met with huge excitement. Located in the same spot as the old B52’s bar, this new venue has already raised plenty of interest, not only because it’s another empty unit being filled with an independent business, which by the way is fantastic news in it’s
self, but because of the origins of it’s name.Mistakenly thought to be named after co owner Benz Suwanmongkol’s love of cats ‘The Meow Bar’, it is in actual fact, named as a tribute to Sophie Burstow’s late mother, Melanie.Sadly, Melanie passed away in 2008 and was well known locally as the founder of China Brasserie, Wabi and the original owner of Piries Bar. Sophie, Benz, Yee Wang and local businessman Nico Spurrier are the driving force behind the new venture and with an opening date set for December 6, I couldn’t wait to meet up with 2
of the owners, Benz and Yee, to find out exactly what they have planned. So Benz, firstly what made you decide to open a new bar? ”Well Davey I have dreamt of opening my own bar in Horsham town ever since the closure of Wabi in East Street, but didn’t have the help of like minded people until now” Benz was previously Wabi’s bar manager and made a name for himself as a hugely talented mixologist (those guys that spin and juggle bottles before making you an insanely delicious cocktail): “I think with Wabi now gone,
there is a real need to provide Horsham with a good quality high end cocktail bar which offers great food and a memorable experience. Benz continues. A lot of Wabi’s ex employees are actually joining me again to deliver on this concept” Benz is no stranger to business, as his mobile cocktail bar ‘Flair Affairs’ has appeared at many private venues and local town centre events, such as Americarna and The Carribean Festival which took place earlier this year. When asked to elaborate on the food, Benz swiftly passed me

The Capitol Theatre cafe gets new look!
Horsham’s Capitol Theatre cafe has recently been furnished with a fantastic range of new pictures and posters harking back to the golden age of British comedy. The Capitol Theatre and Horsham’s very own Jack Lane (of Wisdom of a Fool & Dad’s Army Radio Show) has permanently loaned the pieces to the theatre following huge interest they received at his temporary display in the Capitol’s gallery earlier this year. Whilst the six quad cinema
posters of Norman Wisdom films have been collected by Jack over the years, the paintings of Kenneth Williams, Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom & Eric Morecambe were spotted by Jack when he was on tour with his one man show “Wisdom of a Fool” last year. Displayed in the auditorium of the Alnwick Playhouse in Northumberland, these 6 ft tall images painted by local artistViv Dykes were listed for sale following the news the theatre was due a refurbishment.
Once Jack found this out, he along with acting partner David Benson (Dad’s Army Radio Show) snapped them up and brought them home, and we’re glad he did. Why not pop along to The Capitol Theatre, grab a coffee, sit back and admire the art.....just like that! You can see both Jack Lane and David Benson this Christmas in Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’. Tickets available at The Capitol Box Office.

e m i T y t r a P s a m t s i r h C Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Only seems like Summer was last week - literally. And, as per tradition, here is our annual feature on the best venues to hold your Christmas party this year. Whether it’s for an office do, or a party for friends and family, we have selected a range of our favourite pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels to hopefully give you a wide range of options when you decide to book the best party of the year. If you have been given the responsible task of booking your work’s do, there may be a few things you might want consider... Venue, location, entertainment and cost, are all details you will need to make sure fit with your guest list. Sounds like a daunting task right? Well, don’t despair, here are a few tips from our advertisers, Stevens Drake, on how to organise a Christmas do to remember: Who should you invite? When drawing up the invite list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an effort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason. If staff are encouraged to invite
their partners along, allow for the prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships. Where and when should you hold it? It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to ‘drink and drive’ is clearly inadvisable. So consider whether you have good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do? Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consumption of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff, but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff; make sure that there are plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment? Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up comedian’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about? When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less
inhibited and more likely to say (or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimination and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still required. Oh, and if you are the boss, remember that alcohol and conversions about pay rises don’t mix! The morning after the night before Make sure that people know if
they are required to be in work the day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required. Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’? I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifically to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth considering whether your existing policies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is
expected of people in this context. If not, now is the time to get your house in order. Oh, and make sure you have fun Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your colleagues for their efforts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!
We know how to party in style at Christmas! With Christmas just round the corner it’s time to get those parties booked in! South Lodge is ready and waiting to welcome you and your guests, to one of our joiner parties, including a three-course dinner, your very own party box and Christmas crackers for everyone. After dinner, head onto the dance floor where the DJ will be waiting for you to party throughout the night. TIMPKINS REVUE: Lightning fast choreography meets uber swift editing in a fantasmagorical collision of quality entertainment. An overload of velvet, sandals and multi-hued wool provides a startling accompaniment, the whole effect being that of a slim man and a fat man putting their bums in your face. Cutting their teeth compering and performing in Comedy and Variety nights at The Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea, they watched the nineties as it wafted gently past until, eventually and not before time, London called. With the fledgling post-fix, ‘Revue’, added, they blasted the clubs with their Guitar and Stylophone stylings, wowing rooms with super slick prop manipulation, dazzling jaded eyes with sandal based choreography that remains inimitable. Now, this terpsichorean twosome tour the country, even venturing as far afield as The Falklands and Oman, to provide spiritual uplift to the brave boys and girls of the armed forces. If you like music and let’s face it, who doesn’t, you’ll like it. If you like silliness, middle aged men dancing and unsavoury acts, you’ll probably love it. And introducing... MARTIN DURCHOV: Martin is a Bulgarian comedian based in London. In 2018, he was a finalist in 6 new act competitions, including So You Think You’re Funny, Leicester Square New Comedian of the Year, Get up Stand up New Act Competition and Yellow Comedy Young Comedian of the Year. In 2019, he has already been a runner up in Bath New Act of the Year, a finalist in the Max Turner competition, winner of the Sussex New Comedian of the Year, as well as being in the runnings for Petfringe Comedian of the Year 2019. Alongside his competition success, Martin was also the winner of the King Gong show at The Comedy Store London February 2019, as well as multiple time winner of The Blackout at Up The Creek.

In 2007 Tanyalee premiered her first one woman show called “Little Do They Know” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where she received 4 star reviews. MIKE GUNN: Mike Gunn’s history is as interesting and entertaining as his comedy. A misspent youth and a series of grim jobs cultivated his cynical outlook on life and a perverse desire led him to the world of stand-up. A self-confessed pessimist, Mike describes himself as ‘not a natural choice for a career in laughter’. He has a rare ability to walk close to the line of what audiences find acceptable and yet still remain likable and funny. His reputation for being a bit unfriendly, a touch dark and even morose is really not true. In real life he’s loving, warm and philanthropic. Just a bit misunderstood. Early in his career, Mike was supporting the likes of Jo Brand and Alan Davies and recently supported Lee Mack on his huge UK tour. He now headlines at all the top comedy venues in the UK and is rapidly reaching cult status on the circuit. He has performed internationally, taking his talent to Hong Kong, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia and to Australia at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, where he completed a five-week sell-out season. Mike had the dubious honour of being the first comic to ever play in Kuantan, East Malaysia and has entertained the troops in the Falkland Islands. He has also taken two solo shows to the Edinburgh Festival; The first of which saw him adopt the character of a funeral director in his show ‘Good Grief’ for which he received rave reviews. His follow up show at the festival was the provocative show: “Uncut”. A departure from straight standup, this took a comedic look at drug addiction and recovery. In 2012, Mike and his touring partner Sean Collins completed a 35 date sell out UK tour. THE RAYMOND AND MR

Yup, it’s that time of year. The time of year when we move over to the main house, and present a show featuring our usual array of outstanding acts, but this time with a little bit more of a profile in each of their respective cases. Not only that, we’ve added the recent winner of the Sussex Comedian of the Year to the bill. Wowsers - four acts. It’s going to be an absolute blast! As ever, resident host Kevin Precious, will be on hand to oversee the proceedings. The featured acts are: the enlightening and entertaining Tanyalee Davis, ‘Joan Rivers meets a piledriver’ - The Scotsman (As seen on ‘Live at the Apollo’); the wry and acerbic Mike Gunn, ‘Mike Gunn will make you die laughing’ - The Guardian (As seen on ‘Michael McIntyre’s Roadshow’); and uniquely different visual circuit legends The Raymond and Mr Timpkins Revue , ‘Joyous. Pretty irresistible’ Chortle (London Palladium). As well as which, there’s the lovely bonus in the form of the recently crowned Sussex Comedian of the Year, Martin Durchov. TANYALEE DAVIS: 3 foot 6 inch Canadian standup comedian, Tanyalee Davis, is headlining at comedy clubs, colleges, and comedy festivals throughout the UK, and the world with her own unique perspective and somewhat racy brand of comedy. In January 2011, Tanyalee performed her ONE WOMAN SHOW, 4 nights a week for 6 months, just off the Las Vegas strip. Since arriving in the UK back in 2013, Tanyalee has stormed the UK comedy scene earning her appearances on prestigious comedy shows such as Live At The Apollo, The Last Leg & The John Bishop Show. Tanyalee also supported Frankie Boyle on his 2012 UK Tour Not just content with being a comedian, Tanyalee has also appeared in multiple movies, including El Matador, For Da Love Of Money & Austin Powers 3: Goldmember. She is also part of Abnormally Funny People, an ensemble show, performing throughout the United Kingdom.

Join HAODS for an uplifting, feel good, all-singing and alldancing evening of entertainment as they present the classic musical My Fair Lady at the Capitol in Horsham from 12 to 16 November. Based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion, My Fair Lady tells the beloved tale of Eliza; a young flower seller with an unmistakable Cockney accent which keeps her in the lower rungs of Edwardian society. When Professor Henry Higgins tries to teach her how to speak like a proper lady, an unlikely friendship begins to flourish. Joining Eliza is a colourful cast of characters that ranges from the slums of the cockney
population to the dizzy heights of Ascot’s high society, but can Eliza find her place in the world? Fall in love with the diverse and dynamic characters, stunning dance routines, comedy moments and beautiful storytelling from a 40 member strong cast in this award winning musical which promises to delight and dazzle you. Director Yvonne Chadwell says: “It is a joy to be able to interpret characters working with our wonderful cast, finding the nuances in the language and personas. This blockbusting two hour show has delighted audiences throughout the UK, mainland Europe, Asia and New Zealand for nearly two decades and has established itself as the one of the nation’s favourite musical theatre concerts. Beyond the Barricade, presents exciting concert portrayals of the
greatest songs in musical theatre, all performed entirely live by some of the best musical performers working today, featuring songs from The Phantom Of The Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Jersey Boys, The Lion King, Blood Brothers, Miss Saigon, Hamilton and many others; Climaxing with a spectacular finale from, of course, Les Miserables! Andy Reiss and David Fawcett, devised the show after appearing in the Manchester and London casts of Les Misérables. David played the lead role of Jean Valjean in both the Manchester

Joining Andy and David on stage is Katie Leeming and Poppy Tierney. Katie joined Beyond the Barricade after playing the lead role of Eponine in the West End production of Les Miserables. Katie also appeared with the Les Miserables cast on the televised Classical Brits awards and the Royal Variety Show, as well as an ensemble vocalist in the Les Miserables movie. Poppy played Cosette in Les Miserables on the UK Tour and in the West End, and also played leading roles in Evita, The Witches of Eastwick, and Miss Saigon. She recently appeared in the new Abba film, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. Andy, David, Katie and Poppy also featured in the LES MISERABLES 25th Anniversary Concert, staged at the O2 Arena, London. They are joined on stage with their own ensemble of talented musicians. Performance: Wednesday 20 November, 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £26.50, available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www. hawth.co.uk

ily home, whilst retaining many character features of the cottage, which dates back to the early 1800’s. Recent improvements have included solid oak bespoke doors throughout. There are plenty of beautiful country walks or horse riding in the area and the village offers local shops and a school. The accommodation comprises light and spacious entrance hall with a cloakroom come utility room. The kitchen overlooks the rear gardens and has open access into the dual-aspect dining room. The sitting room is very generously proportioned and features a wood burner in an attractive brick chimney breast and double aspect windows. Finally downstairs there is a third reception room, currently used as a family room. To the first floor the substantial principal bedroom benefits from an en-suite shower room. There are three further bedrooms, all doubles, with new fitted wardrobes and desk in the second bedroom. These bedrooms are served by the family bathroom, which has a lovely white suite with claw-foot bath. Many of the first floor rooms enjoy views over the neighbouring countryside. OUTSIDE The property is approached via a shingle carriage driveway with ample parking and an attractive shrub border and screening for privacy. To the rear the garden is mainly laid to lawn, with a patio area accessed from the kitchen. There is rear access to the garage, which has been transformed in part, into a studio or home office. Towards the end of the garden there is a picturesque seating area under a mature oak, which overlooks farmland. Call Martin & Co on 01403248222 to arrange a viewing
Questions to ask when selling your home Selling your home is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. The financial implications are substantial and it could be a stressful experience. There are lots of things to consider, not least which estate agent to help you through process. Here are 5 questions you should ask your estate agent when deciding to sell your home...
1. What will you charge? There’s never been more choice when choosing an estate agent to sell your home. From traditional high street agents, to online services and hybrids, knowing which is best can be a difficult decision. Remember to ask if the fee is all-inclusive and whether it is paid upfront or at the end of the process.
2. How long am I tied in for? Before signing on the dotted line, establish how long you will be tied to their contract. Most agents will stipulate that your property remains with them as a sole agency for a number of weeks. Once that initial period is up, if your property hasn’t been sold you can change agents or market with more than one agent.
3. What asking price should I set?
Farhalls Crescent – For Sale £585,000 Offering all the space a growing family could need, this bright and spacious four bedroom detached house is located in a popular residential area only a few minutes’ walk from Littlehaven station.
The beauty of traditional high street agents is the knowledge they have regarding the local market. While the asking price decision is ultimately yours, having the full picture from a well informed and knowledgeable agent can really help.
4. Is my property ready to be sold? Getting your agent’s opinion on your property and its condition is a great way to prepare for the marketing process. The agent should know the kind of decor that is appealing to buyers in your area and be able to suggest improvements to make it appeal to more buyers.
5. Is it the best time to sell a house in the UK?
The property has been expertly extended to create a large main living room with adjoining dining area both giving direct access to the secluded rear garden. The stunning refitted kitchen has been finished to an exceptional standard, with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and ample worktop space. Upstairs you will find the large family bathroom, an en-suite shower room and all the bedrooms are complemented by fitted wardrobes.
play. Although the property has already been extended there is potential for further development, subject to planning permission. Call us on 01403 248222 to arrange your viewing of this beautifully presented home.

Celebrate YMCA anniversaries at Saturday’s free entry game ! Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This Saturday is a red letter day at Horsham YMCA Football Club’s Family Lawyers’ Stadium when there will be a joint celebration of two very significant anniversaries – 90 years of YM football on their Gorings Mead Ground and 175 years of the worldwide YMCA organisation, represented locally by the DownsLink Group.
At Gorings Mead on Saturday YM First team play Eastbourne United in the Southern Combination League Premier Division and entry is free, Chairman Geoff Foreman telling the District Post: “We are hoping for a big crowd – the ground will be open from 1.30pm and, along with the football, we’ve got a band lined up to play in the clubhouse, and there’ll be stalls, a big raffle and a free buffet at the end of the match. A number of former players will be
Four goal YMCA thrust through in cup Tuesday November 5 – Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Second Round Horsham YMCA 4 0 Crawley Down Gatwick Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter
Last season high flying YM took all six points from the two league matches against Crawley Down Gatwick, but this term the two sides nestle in the second half of the table, with CDG one place above YM. However, in an excellent second half display YM catapulted CDG out of the Sussex Senior Cup, with their best result of the season – YM had also scored four goals in victories over Loxwood, Saltdean United, Langney Wanderers and Lingfield, but this was their first clean sheet quadruple of the season. In the end this was a comprehensive win for YM, yet CDG made the early running, and half an hour into the match there was no hint of a four nil win. In the early exchanges amid CDG pressure Nick Sullivan headed wide, Michael Wood blazed over and Ollie Moore kicked well wide, Tony Nwachukwu clearing another attack. YM gradually came more into the game, but the CDG defence kept out Adam Hunt’s shot, before his header from a corner was off target. YM were now getting plenty of ball, but it was not being retained, keeper Aaron Jeal needing to dive full length to keep out a CDG free kick, and they had an escape when Jeal could only parry a close range shot onto the woodwork, the resultant corner coming to nothing. Further CDG incursions followed – until YM launched a series of rapid attacks from which several close range shots were blocked,
but not cleared and when, just before half time, the ball came to Dan Mobsby he made no mistake. Two more CDG corners came and went, but YM retained their 1-0 lead at the break. In persistent rain sweeping across the ground, YM restarted more purposefully, earning an early corner, Jack Ryder soon doubling YM’s lead. YM kept pushing, but their further corner was matched by two from CDG, in between which Ryder headed just wide. But, YM’s third goal soon arrived from an excellent Matt Daniel finish with CDG keeper Sam Smith looking very lonely. Luke Gedling’s free kick was then too aerial and a Nwachukwu scoop was cleared with Smith out of position. Although the clock was running down fast with the result in no doubt, to their credit CDG were still competing, until, well into added time YM administered the coup de grace when Ryder got the ball from Smith, ran free and crashed it into the empty goal. YM Manager Peter Buckland told the District Post: “I was surprised that either side managed to score in the first half because both teams were giving the ball away too easily. But, it was a completely different picture in the second when we put together some great build ups, culminating in clinical goals. We’re getting players back from injury and are now playing more confidently. Its always good to win in this cup, because you never know who we might meet next – it could be Brighton or Crawley ! We enjoyed being back at Gorings Mead after a month’s absence - I almost had to use a Sat Nav to remind me how to get here! And, we’re looking forward to coming back on Saturday – against Eastbourne United in the league.
attending, including Kevin Budge, now with YMCA DownsLink. We’ve invited Horsham Sparrows, who use our ground for some of their matches and with whom we have an excellent relationship. We’ve also issued invitations to other colts’ teams and to schools, too.” Horsham YMCA Football Club was founded in 1898 and is especially well respected in the district, while the YMCA organisation is the oldest youth charity
in the world, focusing on young people – helping them to play a fulfilling role in their communities. Geoff Foreman sums up saying: “Our Treasurer Alan Maguire and President Ron Moulding are instrumental in bringing this anniversary event to life, and we’ll be marking the occasion with a special souvenir programme. There will be an exhibition of YM memorabilia put together by Tim Hewlett supported by Archivist
Andy Flack. The Club is entirely run by our dedicated team of volunteers, ensuring that, in addition to the First team, youth football is promoted through our Under 23 side. Everyone is encouraged to come along to share in the enjoyment of the celebrations of our very special anniversaries and we look forward to seeing you at our friendly Club this Saturday!” Horsham YMCA Football Club, Family Lawyers’ Stadium, Gorings Mead, RH13 5BP

Calling all young‘Billi’cricketers Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst colts Under 13s had an outstanding season this year, winning their league and showing the way with both the league’s leading wicket taker and the leading run scorer in their side. And, the club is now eager to build on that success by competing with additional colts’ teams in more of the age group leagues, especially for children in years 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. So, the club is running a taster session in the sports hall at the Weald on Sunday November 17th between 2 and 4pm, Colts Manager Clive Heyward saying: “All of our existing colts are most welcome to attend and we look forward to welcoming as many new faces as possible. We live in a growing, vibrant village and our friendly family community club has outstanding facilities at Jubilee Fields, where we have two grounds, and excel-
lent practice nets. The colts’ season runs from May to July, with our weekly outdoor training starting in April. We also run winter nets from January to April.” Billingshurst’s senior side is challenging to return to the Sussex Premier League and the club is keen to further develop coaching to enable a conveyor belt of promising colts to progress up through the feeder sides. Clive Heyward adds: “There is more information about the club on our website - https:// billingshurst.play-cricket. com/ and on Facebook and Twitter and I’ll be delighted to see a really good crowd of children at our taster session, whether you’ve played before or are new to the game – bring a friend and just come along to have a go and experience some cricket fun! All the equipment will be provided so all you need is a pair of trainers!” cliveheyward@whsmithnet. co.uk

Roffey awards celebrate outstanding season
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Roffey First X1 won the Sussex Premier League for the fifth time in six years and the Second and Third teams were promoted, with the Fourths in elevation contention for much of the season. These exceptional achievements were celebrated at the club’s award ceremony when returning Australian overseas favourite Ben Manenti won the batting citation. His 645 league runs included 135 against East Grinstead in May and a series of violent demolition jobs in the Sussex Cup, featuring a life-endangering 164 versus Chichester Priory Park, and 105 battered off the Lindfield attack. Manenti also took 26 league
wickets, boosted by cup successes. He made his first Aussie Big Bash appearance during our previous winter, and, being on professional cricket’s radar, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to come back to Roffey in 2020, as the club would like. The First XI bowling award went to left arm spinner Luke Barnard for his 35 scalps at under 15 runs apiece. Barnard bowled consistently well throughout the season, turning the ball prodigiously, and among a series of highlights his return of 4-1 in the cup tie against Slinfold was particularly devastating. In the feeder teams the 2nd XI batting and bowling prizes went to Sachin Naik and Mark Pavlovic respectively, “Pav” also chipping in with some telling contributions
with the bat. The Barnes dynasty collected the 3rd team gongs – Ed for his batting and evergreen Jim for his consistently penetrative bowling, while Matt Howell was the leading 4th team batsman and Mark Murphy the top bowler. The ceremony was crowned by the presentation of two special honours, with, first, the Darren Webb prize going to outstanding teenage all round cricketer Sam Henderson, who pulled the fat from the fire with an incredible undefeated match-winning 82 on his First team debut at Mayfield when defeat seemed certain. The final, particularly popular award went to Suzanne Davies for the superb teas that she prepares with Anne Walker – widely regarded as the best on the circuit
Remembering Horsham FC players killed in action Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter This weekend, millions across the UK and the Commonwealth will fall silent to commemorate the brave men and women who lost their lives in conflict. One hundred and one years ago, World War One, ‘The Great War’, ended, during which an estimated sixteen million combatants and civilians perished. There was unlikely to have been a city, town or village in England that didn’t feel the effects of the battles and the Horsham district played its full part, with sons, brothers, husbands, uncles and fathers departing for foreign parts, never to return. By way of a tribute, last week, today and in next weeks’ edition, we look at the stories of three valiant men who served both Horsham Football Club and their country with distinction, sadly making the ultimate sacrifice in World War One. This week we remember James (Jimmy) Sturt, born to a plasterer, Edward, and his wife Emily on 30th September 1880, at a time when Horsham Football Club had yet to be re-established. The large Sturt
family – Jimmy was one of nine siblings – were born and bred in Horsham and his early home was in the Bishopric. Jimmy, or ‘Nobby’ as he was also known, was educated at St John’s Roman Catholic School until the age of nine and would go on to follow his father in his later occupation as a bricklayer. A keen footballer, he joined Horsham FC towards the end of the nineteenth century and would go on to make more than seventy appearances for the club as goalkeeper. Despite excelling between the sticks (he notably saved two penalties in a 1-0 victory against Littlehampton in 1901 as well as scoring one himself against Worthing Rovers), Jimmy also revelled in being given the occasional chance to impress in an outfield position and it was said that there were loud cheers from the Horsham supporters when he scored with a diving header in a match at Steyning! When the call to arms came, Jimmy was among the first in the town to enlist, initially joining the 7th (Service) Battalion East Surrey Regiment, and was sent to France in June 1915 almost seven months to the day after his brother Samuel
had been killed in action. By early October, Jimmy was entrenched in the Loos area of Pas-de-Calais where he was killed by German fire on October 4th, aged thirty-five. His military career, like countless thousands of other young men, had been tragically brief. In a letter written by a serving comrade-inarms to Jimmy’s mother, it was
clear his personality had had an effect on those who knew him. “I can truthfully say that he was loved by everybody he came into contact with. He was trusted and respected by every man in his platoon. Our only consolation was that he was killed instantaneously. You know what a band of brothers we all were. Jim was the best loved of us
all. God knows how many of the rest of us will come back but those of us that do will never forget dear old Jim. Please accept the deepest sympathy of us all.” (With acknowledgment to Gary Cooper for his excellent book “Horsham’s Heroes of the Great War, 1914-1919” and to Horsham Football Club)

Horsham second after last gasp Pamment goal snatches win Photo by John Lines
Saturday November 2 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Haringey Borough 1 2 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham exacted swift revenge for their unceremonious elimination from the FA Trophy at the same venue the previous Saturday, but it was a mighty close run thing. It took an almost posthumous goal from Kieron Pamment to clinch the result, placing the Hornets second in the table two points behind Folkestone Invicta, who only managed to draw, and two ahead of Hornchurch, the Essex side having a game in hand. Until Kieron Pamment’s added time goal it seemed that Horsham would be left rueing missed opportunities, but the rejigged side ultimately benefited in full from a spirited second half performance on a difficult,
saturated pitch in driving rain. The Hornet’s win crowned an unhappy week for the hosts, after they were knocked out of the FA Cup in their re-played tie against Yeovil Town. Starting positively, Horsham frightened Haringey, whose keeper Valery Pajetat just managed to deny Chris Smith before Pamment blazed over. But, the Hornets soon took the lead - in the ninth minute – when Rob O’Toole skirted Pajetat after being put through by Harvey Sparks. Haringey responded but their free kick went begging, O’Toole then firing just wide ahead of Smith’s highly promising header being jointly thwarted by extraordinary defending and the woodwork. And, after another Smith effort was just adrift, Sparks unleashed a screamer, only narrowly wayward. Three more Horsham chances came and went, Smith, JJ O’Sullivan and Jack Brivio all coming close, before Haringey took advantage
of hesitant defending, allowing Aresti to equalise. Suddenly, the hosts started to mount a challenge, George Bentley in the Horsham goal keeping out Onokwai before Aresti was off target, Akinola was way too aerial, and Onokwai was again prevented by Bentley. Beginning the second half one apiece in persistent rain, Bentley’s save deprived Onokwai once more, then, with Horsham regaining possession, Pamment and two Smith possibilities all came to nothing, as did Harding’s two subsequent efforts. Bentley then might have got onto the score sheet, but his massive boot up-field was gathered by his opposite number, although drenched Hornet supporters asserted that the ball had entered the goal. With time fast evaporating, both sides were unable to finalise opportunities - O’Toole’s free kick was safely gathered by Pajetat, Akinola threatened to put Haringey in front, but was just wide, and Smith, too, was unable to maximise, before Brivio saw two chances unrequited either side of O’Toole heading wide. Into added time Haringey almost forced a win, but, when Akinola latched onto a Mills back pass, Bentley’s head came to the rescue, and Dylan Merchant cleared Dimitrios Froxylia’s back heal off the goal line. In the frantic final moments, Horsham were relieved when Coby Rowe was unable to complete, but, when sub Joe Shelley was fouled beyond the area, there was still just time enough for Horsham to grab the points, Pamment’s curling free kick sailing home, immediately followed by the sweet sound of the final whistle.
YMCA hold Steyning in gritty rain-swept draw

Martin Read - Sports Reporter YMCA garnered a useful point from their visit to Steyning’s Shooting Field last Saturday, but it was far from a comfortable experience, the game being played in driving cold rain and
blustery wind. Also, YM had to contend with playing on an unfamiliar artificial pitch, to which Steyning were accustomed. Coming into the game, Steyning were eight places above YM in the league, and, in September, also at The Shooting Field, had beaten YM 4-0 in the Peter Bentley Cup, so the draw was a good outcome for YM. While Steyning had by far the better of the match, stubborn, determined defending by YM kept the hosts at bay throughout the game, despite the miserable conditions. YM made second half changes, but neither side was able to score the decisive, match winning goal. YM were, though, especially pleased with the performances of Pat Gibbs, Jack Ryder, Mitch Clarke and James Pearce – four young players not looking out of place at senior level in a hard afternoon of football, auguring well for their futures in YM’s development plans.
Horsham thrilled with new home Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter The distance between Horsham Football Club’s former Queen Street ground and their new Camping World Stadium is a couple of miles, yet the journey took 10 years and now the facilities are a world away. With Horsham’s new home buzzing with excellent crowds at the new venue, Secretary Jeff Barrett said: “When we had all got over the excitement and, in some cases, astonishment of winning the play-offs and consequent promotion, I’m sure that even the most ardent Hornets supporter would not have predicted that our beloved club would stand proudly in the upper reaches of the table. And, I hope you will share my view that the club has come a long way in a very short time after being homeless since we vacated Queen Street. Having had to squeeze our budget to make ends meet, we are now proud owners of the freeholds of not only the Camping World Community Stadium, but also the Holbrook Club, both valuable assets. We are debt-free and able to generate the income we need to stay that way through sponsorship, hire of the facilities and the clubhouse and bar. Heinz, our chef, has transformed our matchday food with quality not normally found at non-league grounds, and Kev and his team work so hard to meet demand at the bar.” Jeff Barrett continued: “One of the great things about having our own home is that we’ve been able to expand our portfolio of teams. We now have at least one side at each age group between Under 11s and U16s and we have re-introduced the U23 team, playing in the Isthmian Development League. All of them are doing really well and our aim is to add further teams next season.” Much of the financial security created at the club is down to the hard work and acumen of Commercial Director Paul Osborn, who is equally delighted with the progress made, telling the District Post: “Its going really well and we’re getting wonderful support – there
are just two things that I’d like to achieve! First, I’d love to see advertising boards all round the ground, so I’d be very interested to hear from anyone wishing to advertise their services in that way. The second thing is to see even more people enjoying the match day experience – everything that we’ve put together to provide an excellent experience at the game - it couldn’t be simpler to come to a match, just turn up at the turnstile and pay on the day to enjoy the facilities at our fantastic stadium. In addition to the quality football, our bar is stocked with a good variety of Shepherd Neame beers and other drinks, our burgers and sausages are sourced from local suppliers (Calcott Farm and Bangers Galore) and we make sure that everyone gets a friendly welcome, including from our ‘greeters’ who are there to say hello as people come through the turnstiles. We also have a number of large-screen TVs around the clubhouse showing live and recorded football. Being on a bus route from town and having the Park & Ride over the road makes travel to and from the stadium very easy. Our aim is to try to create an experience that isn’t usually found in nonleague football and we hope that people who may not even have been to a non-league game will give us a try.” The club runs coaches to away games and provides youth football and breakfasts on Sunday mornings, Jeff Barrett sums up: “Running a football club such as ours does need a lot of resourcing and we are lucky to have a happy band of volunteers, without whose support we’d have real issues. We are always on the look out for fresh blood, whether its at board level, on the committee or just to help on match days. We have many laughs together and its good fun to be at the heart of our local community club!” Horsham Football Club, Worthing Road, RH13 0AX Jeff Barrett – jeff.barrett@ btinternet.com – Paul Osborn – osborn@btinternet.com
