As the UK celebrates Small Business Saturday on 7 December this year, Horsham will be alive with new business activity and great reasons to make the town a destination for your Christmas shopping. Amidst the busy stalls and activities of the Christmas Market in Horsham town’s Carfax, young entrepreneurs from local schools will also be taking the opportunity to show off their company’s wares. Enthusiastic students from Horsham, Crawley and Mid Sussex schools will be competing for Best Trade Stand as part of the national schools’ Young Enterprise competition for this area. Not only

that, they will be looking to make some sales and a tidy profit from Horsham’s Christmas shoppers on the day. The companies will receive advice about their displays and customer service skills from a local business owner, who will also judge the day’s competition. There is a £50 prize up for grabs for the Best Trade Stand. Horsham District Council is also delighted to announce that it will be launching its popular Christmas Window Wonderland competition on Small Business Saturday this year. Local independent traders across the whole of Horsham District are invited to take part in this Christ-

Community groups in Sussex can apply for a £500 grant to help create climate change resilience in their local community, thanks to David Saddington and other speakers at the January 2020 Landscape Innovation Conference, organised by Sussex Wildlife Trust and the University of Sussex. Fran Southgate, Living Landscapes Advisor at Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “We are keen for young people, community groups, social enterprise, community interest companies, schools and student associations to apply with ideas for projects to help combat our current climate emergency in their local area. “We are also grateful to our conference speakers who have made this funding available by waiving their speaker fees to promote climate resilience. “Groups or individuals can apply, and we are looking

forward to receiving some novel and innovative ideas for both practical and creative projects.” The competition will be judged by a professional panel, and the winner announced at the Landscape Innovation Conference at the University of Sussex on 23rd January 2020. You do not have to be a conference delegate to win the prize, but projects must be based in Sussex. The winner will be asked to provide a short report with photos showing the progress and completion of the work. The deadline for applications is Friday 10 January 2020. To apply and for further details about the conference and its eight keynote speakers, who include youth speaker Bella Lack and Jenny Phelps from FWAG, please visit: https://sussexwildlifetrust.org.uk/lic

mas themed display competition which creates a festive platform for businesses to showcase their goods and makes visits to our market towns and villages more enjoyable and rewarding for shoppers. For details of how to enter please go to: https://thinkhorsham.wufoo.com/forms/m8u1gbr1y6y24p/ Cllr Paul Clarke, Cabinet Member for the Local Economy at Horsham District Council, is highly supportive of the various events planned for the day. He explained: “It is so important to encourage entrepreneurial skills in young people and Young Enterprise has been delivering great projects for over 50 years. “Many of our local small businesses have come from this background and they can vouch for the benefits this programme provides for school students. I wish all the companies lots of luck in the competition and in making plenty of sales on Small Business Saturday this year. “I am also really pleased that we are taking the opportunity on Small Business Saturday to launch our successful Christmas window display competition for 2019, which will benefit so many local small businesses.

“Our excellent selection of independent retailers are always a real attraction for shoppers, and this competition will really showcase their products and services to best effect.” Designed to support the development of new market based businesses in Horsham Town Centre through 2020, the Council is also launching a “January Sale” initiative for stall holders. If market stall holders book for four weeks’ trading in December 2019 they will receive two spaces for free in January 2020. For details and to book online, go to www.horshammarkets.co.uk for Carfax and www.horshamgeneralmarket.co.uk for Bishopric stalls. Horsham’s Swan Walk Shopping Centre offers a high quality indoor trading environment and benefits from a number of unique independent businesses that are so key to a market town like Horsham. Businesses such as Sienna Rocks (Window Wonderland Winners in 2018), Gobsmack Comics, Vacalola and Little Luxuries all add innovation, originality and high levels of customer service alongside more well-known brand names.

Dangerous Christmas lights found online by West Sussex Trading Standards Dangerous Christmas lights are being sold online, an investigation by West Sussex Trading Standards has revealed. Trading Standards officers bought four types of lights from a popular online marketplace website and sent them for safety testing. All failed the tests, with three products posing a serious risk of electrocution. This was because of their easily accessible live parts or claims they were suitable for outdoor use when their construction clearly did not meet the required standard. Other issues included unsafe wiring in the plug and a lack of instructions for safe use. Customers are being urged to only buy recognised brands from known UK sellers. Peter Aston, West Sussex Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “We expected to find some issues when we sent these brands for testing but the fact that all of them failed is very concerning. “Three of the products posed a serious risk of electric shock so could have had fatal consequences for the user. “The market place site in this case has now removed these products from their listings, but we feel they should be doing much more to keep buyers safe and they need to take more responsibility for the products they list. We will

be sharing our concerns with the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards.” Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “With Christmas fast approaching I would urge customers to take the advice of Trading Standards officers and only buy lights and electricals from a recognised brand or business.” Anyone who thinks they have purchased an unsafe product, should contact Trading Standards at www.westsussex.gov.uk/ tsreport or via Citizens Advice on 03454 04 05 06.

“I’m determined to do as much as I can”

With under a month to go until Christmas, Val Howlett, who is under the care of St Catherine’s Hospice, shares how she’s making the most of the here and now including enjoying an early Christmas. “I was diagnosed with terminal cancer last August and, since then, I’ve taken one day at a time. I still have a laugh and I try to get out as much as I can when I feel well. Before I was referred to St Catherine’s I was in a lot of pain with my tumour and nobody was helping me to manage it. But the hospice has helped me with equipment at home, like a raised toilet seat and a handrail, and a nurse phones me after my appointments to see how I am. When I first heard the word hospice I wasn’t scared but I didn’t really know what to expect.

I had never been to St Catherine’s before, and didn’t know what it did, so I decided to come and look around with my daughter, Tina. She does so much for me and often knows what I need before I do! She takes me out, and organises all my appointments and medication. We’re really close and she’s my rock. And when I came into the hospice for the day, I was enamoured by it. I’ve never met such lovely people! I chatted to another lady and it was good to offload with someone in the same situation as me. Coming to the hospice helped me decide that I’d like to be at St Catherine’s when the time comes too. The hospice has supported Tina as well. She saw a counsellor here and got a lot from being able to offload and share how she was feeling.

We get on with things as best we can though. My family have always done crazy things together and that’s not stopped because I’m ill. And I’m still determined to do as much as I can. I’ve always wanted to go to Australia and have Christmas on the beach. I know I’ll never get to Australia now, so I asked my family if we could do an early Christmas on the beach here instead. So seven of us headed to Seaford in September! We had a BBQ on the beach, played Christmas music, wore Santa hats, and had a mini Christmas tree, with a pile of presents underneath as part of our Secret Santa. It was good fun! I knew some people would probably give us weird looks, wondering what we were doing, so I had some collection pots for St Catherine’s. Some people gave us donations, and others shouted Merry Christmas as they walked by. The day’s a great memory for me and my family, and I love to look back at the pictures from it. Tina makes me photo albums of the special things our family does together. And now I’m working through my bucket list. I’ve petted the Meerkats at Tilgate Nature Centre and seen a Bee Gees show at the Hawth. I’m currently planning a helicopter ride. And I’d love to adopt an elephant too! Making memories is really important especially when you’re ill, so if there’s anything you want to do, just do it! It doesn’t matter how silly it might sound, or what other people might think. Do things, get out and about, and make memories while you still can.” St Catherine’s can only help people like Val enjoy the time they have left with their family and friends, thanks to the generosity of people like you. A Rubbish Exhibition (But it’s not!) If, when you’re trying to do your recycling duty, you come upon useless packaging instructions like Frequently Recycled or Consult your local council, then this Saturday’s exhibition in Horsham’s Unitarian Church Hall will be balm to your soul. Scheduled from 10.00am to 3.00pm and entitled ‘The Journey of Rubbish: A Virtual Tour’ this exhibition aims, in the words of its organisers, “to put an end to widespread rubbish and recycling confusion”. An interactive event, it will enable visitors to see and understand the stages through which their discarded packaging and other throw-away items pass. Experts from leading waste management companies will be on hand to explain the processes and advise on best recycling practice. Visitors will not only find specific

advice on what can be recycled but also gain an understanding of why particular items are of value and why others are not. ‘The Journey of Rubbish: A Virtual Tour’ is organised under the aegis of Green Spirit International, one of the group of local organisations including Transition Horsham, Horsham Repair Café, Sussex Green Living and the South East Climate Alliance which are all now actively involved in the fight against pollution and Global Warming. The exhibition’s 30th November date coincides with a 7.00pm further meeting of Horsham’s Extinction Rebellion group at the same Unitarian Church Hall venue –evidence of the growing activism of West Sussex citizens old and young in measures designed to protect the global environment.

The local NHS is urging people in Horsham and Mid Sussex, at risk of suffering from serious health complications if they catch flu, to ensure they claim their free flu jab this winter. The health service in Sussex has prepared for its largest ever flu protection drive to help keep local people well and ease pressure on urgent care services over the winter, with the flu vaccines now available for free for those in at risk groups. Last year, more than 44 people ended up in hospital across Horsham and Mid Sussex due to flu and there were also a small number of deaths across Sussex as a result of the viral infection. Local doctors believe this could have been avoided had those eligible taken up the opportunity to get their free jab, helping ease pressures on local health services by leading to fewer avoidable GP appointments, less people needing hospital care and a drop in the number deaths from flu. For those who do find they have symptoms of the flu, the NHS advises rest and sleep, to keep warm, take paracetamol or ibuprofen and to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Laura Hill, Clinical Chair of Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, said: “Flu is potentially a very serious illness, people might

think that flu is just a cough or cold, but it can have devastating effects - including causing death. “The flu vaccine is the single best way to protect yourself, and your loved ones from, flu. “NHS services across in Sussex have been working hard together to prepare for the winter season, including staff getting their flu jab, so now we’re urging that you, your children or relatives take up the free and convenient flu vaccine as soon as you can.” Those who could get seriously ill if they get flu and risk avoidable hospital admission can claim a free flu jab, including: -All children aged two to ten (but not eleven years or older) on 31 August 2019, this covers nurseries, Reception through school years 1-6 - Those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups - Pregnant women - Those aged 65 years and over - Those in long-stay residential care homes - Carers - Close contacts of immunocompromised individuals People identified at risk of complications can receive the flu vaccine through their GP, and from their local high street pharmacist. The childhood vaccination programme uses a flu nasal spray, protecting children and anyone they come into contact with.

Forest boys return to celebrate their success

The Forest School welcomed back old faces last week as the ‘Class of 2019’ returned for the annual Awards Evening celebration. Joining them was the guest speaker, Mr Andrew DowlenGilliland, who is an ex-student at The Forest School and is now the Chairman of the London and South East Region of the Royal Marines Charity. Chair of Governors, Cliff Purvis, congratulated the young men on their outstanding achievements and offered them some words of wisdom as they move on to the next stage of their education and careers. Parents, staff, Governors and

friends were there to celebrate the GCSE success of all the boys and to see trophies and prizes awarded to those who had attained particular achievements, across the curriculum as well as community, and special whole school awards. Highlights of the evening included 5 awards being presented to Hamish Barnett and 4 awards going to Max Donnelly, Imran Darr and Calum McCartney, including The University of Brighton Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement which went to Imran Darr for his superb exam results. Mr Ian Tomkins, Assistant Headteacher, said: “Every year, we have a high number of boys who achieve excep-

tional GCSE and higher level exam results, but Imran truly deserved this accolade.” The Awards Evening also recognises those pupils who make exceptional progress, and the Frank Newby Award for outstanding progress went to Hamish Barnett. Headteacher Mr Straw said of the evening: “It was a lovely, joyous event. I was so proud; it is such a special occasion where the school community can celebrate every student’s achievements. “These young men will always be Forest boys; we wish all of them the very best for their futures.”

A spokesman for the Home Office said, during the visit, a 46-year-old male from India was arrested and detained. “A 44-year-old Indian male and a 47-year-old Bangladeshi male were also both escorted from the premises. The pair remain on immigration bail whilst the Home Office considers their outstanding immigration applications.” “A further license review application will now be sought by Immigration Enforcement to the local authority.”

New Head Gardener for Grade I Listed Leonardslee Gardens Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens has appointed Stephen Herrington as head gardener. Stephen was formerly Gardens & Parks Consultant and Project Manager for the National Trust, London and South East Gardens Programme, since April 2018; Head gardener at the National Trust property Nymans Garden, from 2014, and before that, curator of Glasgow Botanic Gardens for Glasgow City Council from 2012. The Grade I Listed gardens are set within a steep valley in the 240 acre Leonardslee estate, and feature a series of seven interlinked lakes, originally created to power iron smelting in the 16th and 17th centuries. Victorian plant collector Sir Edmund Loder purchased the estate from his parents-inlaw in 1889 and planted extensive collections of Rhododendrons and Azaleas and many species of trees, and also introduced gazelle, beavers, kangaroos and wallabies. The gardens were sold by the Loder family and closed to the public in 2010. No further maintenance work was carried out until entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE purchased the site in 2017. There followed nearly two years’ extensive restoration work, with a team of some 30 gardeners, until the opening in April 2019. Leonardslee attracts visitors internationally to see its outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells, with many rare specimens collected from all over the world by the Loder family. The collection includes Rhododendron Loderi Sir Edmund and Loderi King George, raised by Sir Edmund in 1901 and amongst the finest examples in the UK. The gardens feature one of the first Pulham rock gardens, dating from 1890: it comprises a series of rocky outcrops which combine natural sandstone with artificial Pulhamite rock, intensively planted with azaleas, dwarf rhododendrons and conifers and other plants and trees. Black Friday and Cyber Monday: What you need to know about your Consumer Rights This Black Friday and Cyber Monday, millions of eager shoppers will be taking advantage of a myriad of money saving deals and offers. Whether you are looking for games consoles or gardening tools there is sure to be a broad range of items to buy at highly discounted prices. But what are your rights when shopping online? Can you get a refund or exchange if you purchased an item before the sales that is now much cheaper in price? What can you do if you buy something from a company overseas and receive the wrong item? Do you really have to pay expensive customs fees on a great deal from abroad? Thomas Pertaia, Legal Adviser at DAS Law, explains what every shopper needs to know... What if an item I purchased before the Black Friday sales is now at a cheaper price? If the store’s return policy allows a refund then it may be possible to refund the previous purchase and buy the same item at a discounted price. The law does not entitle you to do this; however, it is worth checking the store’s return policy for discounted items as they generally offer

more rights than the law does. For online purchases see: “What rights do I have when shopping online?” below. I ordered some goods from suppliers outside of the UK and I was sent the wrong item/the item was faulty and the company is refusing to give me a refund, what recourse can I take? Under EU legislation there is a two year guarantee period for products bought within the EU. If the goods you have received are not as described, not fit for purpose, or not of satisfactory quality, you have the right to request either a repair or replacement. The trader should cover all the costs of arranging this and, if they refuse, then you may have a claim against them. This claim can be brought in either the EU Member State where they are based, or in the UK (of course this may change post-Brexit). Before doing this you should speak to a solicitor or contact an organisation such as the European Consumer Centre for free advice. If you have purchased goods

from outside the EU then the relevant law is that which applies in the trader’s country of origin. This will make it more difficult if they refuse to help fix a faulty prod-

uct. If I am buying products from a website outside of the UK, what is the most secure way to pay? The most secure method of paying for goods online is to use

a credit card. If there is a fault, or you are a victim of fraud, on purchases over £100 and up to £30,000, you will have more rights and are more likely to get your money back. In addition to the above protection, which does not extend to debit cards, some protection is also offered under the chargeback scheme. Most cards are covered under this scheme but it’s best to check with the card provider prior to making any purchases. Can a company based in the UK sue me if I write negative reviews online about their service? As long as your review is factually correct, or is simply an expression of your honestly held opinion, then it is extremely unlikely to be considered defamatory and a company will probably not have a legal basis to pursue you. If I order a product and am charged customs fees, do I have to pay them? Yes you do. If you do not pay duty or customs fees within three weeks, your courier company will usually send the product back

to the sender. If you dispute the amount charged then you would need to appeal to HMRC and UK Border Force. Do I have any legal rights to return something if I have changed my mind? Although most stores offer a returns policy within a specific period, this is not obligatory if there is nothing wrong with the item. It is always advisable to check each individual store’s returns policy before purchasing – no matter how good a deal it may be at the time. For online purchases see: “What rights do I have when shopping online?” below. What rights do I have when shopping online? You have 14 days to return the item if you change your mind even if there is nothing wrong with the item - starting from the date of delivery, not date of purchase. You may be liable for the costs of sending the item back however, so again check the terms and conditions. Disclaimer: This information is for general guidance regarding rights and responsibilities and is not formal legal advice as no lawyer-client relationship has been created.

for this year’s top performers – the biggest assessment of any industry. The awards are made for property marketing, results and customer service – which consumers consider to be among the most important criteria when selecting which agent to sell or let their property. e m i T y t r a P s a m t s i r h C Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Only seems like Summer was last week - literally. And, as per tradition, here is our annual feature on the best venues to hold your Christmas party this year. Whether it’s for an office do, or a party for friends and family, we have selected a range of our favourite pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels to hopefully give you a wide range of options when you decide to book the best party of the year. If you have been given the responsible task of booking your work’s do, there may be a few things you might want consider... Venue, location, entertainment and cost, are all details you will need to make sure fit with your guest list. Sounds like a daunting task right? Well, don’t despair, here are a few tips from our advertisers, Stevens Drake, on how to organise a Christmas do to remember: Who should you invite? When drawing up the invite list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an effort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason. If staff are encouraged to invite their partners along, allow for the

prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships. Where and when should you hold it? It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to ‘drink and drive’ is clearly inadvisable. So consider whether you have good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do? Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consumption of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff, but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff; make sure that there are plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment? Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up comedian’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about? When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less inhibited and more likely to say

(or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimination and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still required. Oh, and if you are the boss, remember that alcohol and conversions about pay rises don’t mix! The morning after the night before Make sure that people know if they are required to be in work the

day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required. Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’? I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifically to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth considering whether your existing policies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is expected of people in this context.

If not, now is the time to get your house in order. Oh, and make sure you have fun Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your colleagues for their efforts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

We know how to party in style at Christmas! With Christmas just round the corner it’s time to get those parties booked in! South Lodge is ready and waiting to welcome you and your guests, to one of our joiner parties, including a three-course dinner, your very own party box and Christmas crackers for everyone. After dinner, head onto the dance floor where the DJ will be waiting for you to party throughout the night. Let’s All Dance - The Nutcracker

Let’s All Dance are delighted to return to The Hawth with their festive treat for the whole family, The Nutcracker. But this year, instead of presenting in the Studio, the compa-

ny will be performing on the main stage and have added 20 young girls to the cast. The children, who auditioned in July and have been rehearsing weekly since September, come

mainly from Crawley and surrounding areas, and have been working hard to ensure they fit in seamlessly to the professional production. Artistic Director, Orit Sutton, and Choreographer, Fran Mangiacasale, have lengthened the production a little and added an extra scene for the girls. “They’ve all been working so hard” says Orit. “We’re really looking forward to our final few rehearsals and, of course, the performance at The Hawth on Tuesday 17 December.” Let’s All Dance, in association with Classic Ballet UK (the more classical side of the company), was founded by Orit in 2010. Initially, she provided dance classes and parties across London, and then used her background in professional theatre to start producing shows for family audiences. The Princess & The Frog opened in 2013 and has been followed by several more productions including The Magic Word, The Ugly Duckling, Teddy Bears’ Picnic, Alice in Wonderland and Sleeping Beauty. With stunning dancing, crystal clear story-telling, gorgeous costumes and lovely music, all the shows enthrall children of all ages and introduce them to the magical world of live ballet. Orit Sutton knows that the beauty, grace and strength of professional dancers can be truly inspirational and believes that every child should have access to high quality productions of live dance. The shows produced by Let’s All Dance are educational, engaging and extremely good fun. They are suitable for all ages, boys and girls, and those with or without special needs. Performance: Tuesday 17 December 5pm,The Hawth Crawley. Tickets: £16 (child: £14/Family of Four: £56), available from The Hawth Box Office: 01293 553636 and online: www.hawth.co.uk

iar – but strikingly beautiful. To give you a little taster, from ‘Oh come, all ye faithful’ to Gustav Holst’s ‘Lullay my Linking’, and ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas’ to ‘Hark the herald angels sing’. And there’s a treat if

Horsham FC appoint Craig Brewster Director of Football

Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Football Club has pulled off a major coup by signing the vastly experienced and hugely respected Craig Brewster as Director of Football. This is further evidence, if that

were needed, that the club is determined to build on the fantastic transformation achieved in the last few months: promotion to the BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division, in which they top the table, and the opening of the wonderful new Camping World Stadium, a far cry from ten years of

ground sharing. 52 year old, Dundee born Horsham resident Brewster has an impeccable football pedigree: he began his 25 year playing career at 18, as a midfielder with Forfar Athletic, before moving on to Raith Rovers, Dundee United (for whom he scored the winning goal in the

1994 Cup Final v Rangers at Hampden Park), Hibernian, Dunfermline Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, Aberdeen and Ross County. And, he spent five seasons with Ionikos in Greece, where he scored 155 goals, appearing in the Greek Cup Final. Latterly, the tall Brewster performed as a player manager and, having long since becoming a striker, in an incredible 700 first team appearances he totalled 296 goals. His coaching roles have included spells with some of his former Scottish clubs, and with Plymouth Argyle, Crawley Town – where he was Caretaker Manager – Brighton & Hove Albion and other Sussex clubs, currently working with ex Horsham boss Anthony Storey at the All Stars Academy in Eastbourne. At Horsham FC, Brewster will work with first team Manager Dom Di Paola and coaches across the Club to create and deliver a strategy on all football matters. CEO John Lines says: “Craig’s appointment as our Director of Football serves to underline our commitment to football in the community. He has wide professional experience in Coaching, Management and with Youth Football and we are fully confident that his input will benefit the Club throughout our entire spectrum. It is a fantastic opportunity for Horsham to have someone with Craig’s qualities and experience on

board to look at what we can offer to youngsters and our more experienced players alike. Our greatest wish is to bring young local players through our youth ranks into our senior set-up and Craig has the energy, enthusiasm and professional experience to help our established Coaches do just that. I am looking forward to working with him.” Craig Brewster said: “I’m very honoured to be given this exciting opportunity, and am really looking forward to working closely with everyone at the club. It’s an exciting project for myself to use the wealth of knowledge and experience gained throughout my long professional career, to help provide a pathway for those exciting young players to make that journey into the Horsham 1st team or even onto the next level in a professional career. Having been in and around the club recently, I’m enthused to see the potential the facility has to offer the local community and look forward to helping contribute to further success.” The signing has been very well received by Hornet fans, long term supporter Neil Chartres summing up with: “What a fantastic appointment Craig Brewster is for the super Hornets – well done Horsham!”

Short corner challenges deny Horsham first win Horsham 1 3 Blackheath & Elthamians Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was a bottom of the table clash, that Horsham could and should have won. It came down to the fact that Blackheath & Elthamians had a better short-corner routine, converting three out of five, whereas Horsham converted none out of 12. The visitors never really looked like scoring a field goal, but Horsham did score one, although they missed three or four close quarter chances when the ball did not quite run for the team. Classy Andy Blood, Horsham’s new coach, made his debut and will now play all the remaining games, following his departure from East Grinstead. Horsham, though were without key players – Zak Chinn, Toby Fraser and Solly Woodall - but Freddie Campbell and Joey

Humphreys did play most of the game this time. Horsham’s goal came when Campbell threaded a pass through to Humphreys on the top of the D and he jinked round two defenders and put it past the keeper. Joey could have had a hat-trick and almost certainly should have been awarded a penalty stoke. Some reckoned that Horsham should have been two penalty flicks, and the assessment of onlookers was that their defence was much, much better with coach Blood playing in the middle. In Solly Woodall’s absence Blood also took the short corners, and while post match he said that Horsham do not currently practise corners in training, it is quite likely that this will be included in future. On Saturday Horsham has a long trip to Sittingbourne in the depth of Kent to take on fellow strugglers, Old Bordenians for another target win game, many believing that an elusive Horsham victory would work wonders for their confidence, heralding a popular revival.

Horsham consolidate with good away win Saturday November 23 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Broxbourne 1 2 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Sixth-placed Horsham returned from their tortuous160 mile round trip to Hertfordshire with three valuable points and breathing space above their nearest rivals in the Women’s Conference East table. After a good warm up session Horsham were raring to go, only to let in a scrappy, disputed early short corner. The goal stood, but Horsham were in the ascendancy, yet were denied by the woodwork from Louisa Campbell’s strike. Then Fran Crossley crashed a volley goal bound, to see it saved by the

home keeper’s rib cage. But, Horsham’s supremacy produced a goal in the 14th minute, when Fran hammered in a short corner, but they were thwarted from taking the lead when Tiff Male’s conversion was deemed illegal, the score remaining 1-1 at the half way point. Although the game was end to end following the resumption, Horsham goalkeeper, Hannah Simpson had little to do, and in the last quarter Charlotte “CJ” White scored the winning goal, blasted in from another set piece. Fran Crossley told the District Post: “This was a great away win for us, especially as we were without Rosie Firth, who was out with concussion from last week’s game – hopefully she’ll be back when we play third in the table Bedford on Saturday (Broadbridge Heath 14.00 push back).”

Sussex fixtures released – Horsham game confirmed !

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter The county fixtures have been announced and, as previously reported in your District Post, in a move greatly welcomed by Horsham Cricket Club and local and far flung cricket lovers, Sussex are returning to play at Cricketfield Road. On Sunday August 9th Sussex will entertain Gloucestershire for a one day game in the Royal London Cup 50 over competition, and as that will be the last match in the preliminary qualifying stage, it could be an all important ‘must win’ fixture, with all to play for. There is a long history of Sussex cricket at Horsham, stretching back over 100 years with many famous players gracing the ground. Sussex last played at the club in 2015, so their return to Horsham is great news, especially because, sadly, the spectacle of counties playing 1st team cricket at out grounds is an endangered species, some counties only staging home games at their head quarters. Whereas, in addition to Horsham, Sussex will also be playing at Arundel and Eastbourne next season. Sussex cricket at Horsham – so often a happy hunting ground has been well supported and the players like playing here. There have sometimes been problems with wickets elsewhere in the county, but those at Horsham

have been widely praised, with umpires describing them as being “of Test standard.” Rob Andrew, Sussex Cricket Chief Executive, expressed his delight, saying: “The return of county cricket to Horsham is brilliant news. Continuing to grow the game across the whole of the county is one of our main ambi-

Continuing to grow the game across the whole of the county is one of our main ambitions and bringing first-team cricket to another part of Sussex can only help with that. tions and bringing first-team cricket to another part of Sussex can only help with that. There is nothing more inspiring than seeing top-level athletes perform in the flesh, and it’s brilliant that even more people will now have the opportunity to see our current crop of professionals in action. We’re delighted that Sussex cricket at Horsham will resume next summer. Hopefully it will continue for many more years af-

ter that. I thank Chris Shambrook, Horsham CC Club Manager, and Richard Marshall, Horsham CC Cricket Chairman for their work in making our return possible.” The Sussex programme includes 19 days of Championship cricket on weekends or Bank Holidays, the season beginning at Hove, on Easter Sunday, April 12th against Durham. Sussex Sharks’ T20 competition starts on Thursday May 28th, again at Hove, with Kent visiting for one of six home Vitality Blast fixtures under lights, the group games running until Sunday July 12th. Sussex’s Championship season finishes against Middlesex at Lord’s, beginning on September 22nd. Meanwhile, the Southern Braves will be based at Hove for women’s matches in the new Hundred competition. Horsham Cricket Club has an excellent track record for laying on superb golden days of memorable cricket, and, speaking of Sussex’s return, Chris Shambrook said: “So many people have asked me when Sussex will be returning to Horsham, so I’m absolutely thrilled. Horsham Cricket Club is a superb place for the local cricket community to meet up and we’ll be looking to recreate the old Sunday League atmosphere, while encouraging families and local businesses too, with a great opportunity for them to entertain their clients and staff. It will be a tremendous day out with food vendors, entertainment and local beers. Hospitality will start at £60 a head in our marquee and sponsorship for as little as £50. Packages are available, so if you or your business would like to take advantage of this opportunity then please email admin@ horshamsportsclub.com or call me on 01403 254628 – I’ll be delighted to hear from you!” Richard Marshall added: “It is fantastic that Sussex Festival cricket is returning to Horsham. We’ve had a fabulous relationship with Sussex over the years providing players such as Tony Pigott, Robin Martin- Jenkins, Chris Nash, Jofra Archer and we hope to have home grown talents Will Beer, Tom Haines and Tom Clark in the side when Sussex play Gloucestershire.”

BBH Chairman Keith Soane receives Unsung Hero Award Football Andy Crisp The BBC Sussex Sports Awards ceremony is one of the most prestigious evenings in the Sussex sporting calendar, taking place each November. Hosted by Active Sussex, this year’s black-tie event, in its 17th year, was held at the Hilton Brighton Metropole on Friday November 22. Famous faces from across the world of sport were in attendance for the starstudded ceremony, hosted by GB sporting legend Kriss Akabusi,

alongside revered BBC radio presenter Danny Pike. Keith had been nominated having completed 50 years service for Broadbridge Heath Football Club. When he moved into the village he received a leaflet through the door from the Football Club inviting anyone who played football to come along to a training session, little did he know then, that 50 years later he’d still be involved with the club and for the past 30+ years as Chairman. He was a key figure in the enthusiastic team responsible for setting up Heath’s excellent new

YMCA’s mercurial season continues Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Tuesday November 19 – Newhaven 2 - 3 Horsham YMCA Saturday November 23 – Horsham YMCA 2 - 5 East Preston Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA’s roller coaster season carried on with a close fought win against upper table Newhaven, only to be followed up with a disappointing home defeat at the hands of lowly East Preston last Saturday – confirming that while YM is perfectly capable of achieving good results against the better sides, they can sometimes mystifyingly come unstuck against teams that they might be expected to beat. At Newhaven’s Trafalgar Ground, Tony Nwachukwu opened the scoring in the 9th minute, the hosts subsequently levelling the score, which remained one apiece at the break. Matt Daniel found the net early in the second half, but parity was restored, and the deadlock was maintained almost up to the death, when, having been on the field for less than quarter of an hour, sub Ashley Wadhams grabbed

all three points for YM. Last Saturday’s result at Gorings Mead was frustrating for YM. They were soon a goal down, George Neighbour scoring after 7 minutes, and although Tony Nwachukwu equalised just beyond the mid point of the first half, Daniel Simmonds promptly retook the lead for East Preston and then, within a minute, Johan van Driel made it 1-3, which was the score at the interval. In the second half, Van Driel put the visitors ahead in the 58th minute, before completing his hat trick well into added time. Matt Daniel had scored in the interim, but YM were well beaten. However, YM is pleased to report better news on the injury front with Ash Dugdale and Callum Donaghey both getting pitch time, against Newhaven and East Preston, respectively. Sussex Senior Challenge Cup information – in Round 3 YM have a trip to Bognor Regis Town on Tuesday December 10th. Meanwhile, this Saturday they travel to 18th placed Pagham in the league, where a win coupled with favourable results elsewhere could elevate YM from 11th into the top half of the table.

Heath’s Losing run continues Saturday November 23 Southern Combination Football League Premier Div Pagham 3-1 Broadbridge Heath

Football Andy Crisp Heath visited lowly Pagham hoping to end the recent slump and build a 13 point gap between them. However, by the time they set off for the coast they had lost 11 players to a mixture of injury, illness, suspension and unavailability. Josh Tuck, Rob Godfrey, Lee Carney, Louie Blake, Cameron Watts and Renato Carvalho were suffering from injury, Jake Hull was ill, Alfie Jones on a one match suspension and Max Howell, Harry Balfour and Gary Charman unavailable. Jamie Taylor played with a bruised foot which needed painkillers and part of his boot cut out to relieve the pressure. Yet, Heath started well with Tim Cook, Jamie Taylor and Archie Goddard all testing Crook in the home goal, but they fell behind when Conor Geogehan headed in from close range from a corner. Things looked like they were getting worse for the patched up Bears when Flack’s miscued clearance fell in the box and led to a penalty

but, mercifully, the spot kick was blazed high and wide. Appearing to make the most of this lifeline, Heath scored within minutes of the restart. Cook got away down the left and when the hosts failed to clear his cross, new signing Paulo Okoye cut the ball back for Jamie Wanstall to finish clinically from the edge of the box. Heath were on the up now and pushed their opponents back but still couldn’t find the final touch to trouble Crook. Then on a rare break Pagham gained a corner which was sliced away for another and as so often seems to happen, an unnecessary corner led to a goal as Joe Clark jumped unmarked to power in a header from 6 yards off the underside of the bar. As the rain lashed down Heath’s spirits were dampened and although Steve Painter tried to freshen things up, taking off the hobbling Taylor and Archie Goddard and bringing on the Jones brothers, it was Pagham who finished the scoring when a clearance evaded Flack and with no cover, Lewis Jenkins raced through to finish into the bottom corner. Manager Painter, relieved to be without a midweek match, hopes to get many of his sick and injured list back for the visit of East Preston on Saturday.

Green and Whites slip to eighth in the table

LONDON 1 SOUTH Saturday 23rd November 2019 Horsham 6-35 Havant Rugby Richard Ordidge-RUFC Horsham were well beaten 35-3 at Coolhurst by promotion challengers Havant who on this performance look the strongest side in the league in the first ever fixture between the clubs. The Green and Whites slip to eighth in the table on the back of four consecutive defeats, which have all been against the leading sides, but they will wish to arrest this sequence at KCS Old Boys on 7 December after a week’s break which will allow time for players to recover from a series of knocks and injuries. Havant are the leading club in Hampshire, and look well set to return to play National League rugby at the earliest opportunity. They will have the chance to put themselves in pole position when they travel to Westcombe Park and face the current leaders in their next game. Horsham hammered away for much of the match but were unable to cross the try line in the face of a well organised defence, meanwhile when Havant attacked they found the Green and Whites to be far more obliging and the margin of defeat would have been greater if the visiting kicker had not missed five out of his six conversion attempts. A disappointed Head Coach Nick Stocker reflected after the game: “A disappointing day that started immediately from a dropped ball at kickoff and compounded by several missed tackles which lead to a try on 29 seconds. Not an ideal start! We were slow to settle into the

game and although we clawed ourselves back into contention after 20 minutes when we missed the opportunity to take the lead, with our basic skills lacking today, we were always up against it against a strong, physical, well drilled side whose basics didn’t desert them.” Horsham’s start was as slow as it was against Belsize Park two weeks ago and found themselves with a mountain to climb as they conceded a couple of tries in the first six minutes. Missed tackles following a dropped kick off led to a stretched defence and after three phases Wayne Dugan used his pace to score a simple try out wide. The next try was conceded from an attack out wide following a mark on the 22 metre line and a quick tap. The Horsham defence was caught sleeping and when the ball was moved back left, James Wise had a simple run in to line with the defence too narrow. Horsham finally put together some phases and a penalty was awarded and converted by Tom Johnson. The Green and Whites were now applying lots of pressure and settling into the game. A penalty was awarded at the breakdown which Johnson converted to narrow the deficit to four points after 20 minutes and they would have taken an unlikely lead when Emmet O’Rahilly crossed with a powerful surge following a line-out drive but it was ruled out for obstruction. This was to be the last time Horsham trouble the score board. Havant extended their lead from Scott Morris when they scored out wide following several phases, Joel Knight added a penalty following offside in midfield, and then on the stroke of half

time a try was conceded from a ball turned over whilst in attack which was kicked long and winger Scott Morris supported well to pop Knight away to score and go into the break leading 23-6. Horsham came out hard after half time determined to turn the game around but an interception from Ben Chambers when Horsham were in attack saw him run 75 metres to score. The Green and Whites had a lot of possession but could not break down the visitors defence and Havant sealed their win when Wise after a powerful run added his second try wide out from scrum first phase after several missed tackles. Stocker continued: “We coughed up possession when carrying the ball repeatedly today and were punished when gifting possession to a dangerous side. On those occasions when we did look after the ball we looked bereft of attacking ideas in the face of a solid defence. We have now lost four on the trot, with three of these losses against the top three teams. Today was the hardest to suffer given the way we performed and we will need to be much better following the week’s break when we travel to KCS. Mike Watts showed his spirit in his return to the side and played with no shortage of aggression and Nick Bell and Jamie Redmayne were their usual hard working selves. Man of Match awarded by Havant went to Jack Osgood who carried hard all afternoon.” Horsham: Wilde; Watts, Johnson T, Bell J, Riley (Smith); Johnson S, Linfield; Bell N, Preston, Barber (Earle); Goward, Osgood; Redmayne, Smith J, O’Rahilly (Brady)
