Petition launched amidst safety fears as council cut back on gritting CHARLOTTE SCHRoETER

News Reporter

A petition has been launched by local resident Ian McBean to urge West Sussex County Council (WSCC) to review its decision to cut back on the roads that will be gritted this winter as the cold weather strikes. A staggering 10 per cent fewer roads will be gritted than in previous years, meaning only 31 per cent of road networks across the Horsham District will be gritted in a measure to save money by WSCC. Ian’s petition on change.org has been signed over 1,070 times at the time of writing. On Wednesday morning, Ian shared an update that he’d received an email from Jeremy Quin confirming that Mr Quin has raised the issue with the new leader of WSCC. The leader has said he will take it back to the department for review. The petition is gaining traction, having been signed by at least one Horsham Councillor, raised by the local Traffic Group to the parent Parish Council Chair, raised by various Parish Councils, and shared to other Village Facebook Groups in West Sussex, according to an update on the petition. Many villages will be affected by the reduction in gritting with many roads serving as bus and

school routes. Comments on the petition show residents fear for their safety when travelling to work and getting their children to school. There are also concerns for village shops receiving deliveries, residents being isolated, and roads that are narrow and hilly not being gritted at all. In worst case scenarios, residents fear for people’s lives with some highlighting the dangers of black ice and how severe the consequences can be. Horsham roads that would no longer be gritted under the new plans are Bartholomew Way, Beech Road, Bennetts Road, Blackbridge Lane, Black Horse Way, Brook Road, Church Road, Coltsfood Drive, Depot Road, Greenway, Hammerpond Road, Hills Farm Lane, Jackdaw Lane, Kempshott Road, Lambs Farm Road, Lemmington Way, Manor Fields, Merryfield Drive, Millthorpe Road, New Street, Oakhill Road, Orchard Road, Redford Avenue, Rushams Road, Shepherds Road, South Holmes Road, The Carfax, Trafalgar Road, and Tylden Way. Other roads where gritting is due to be stopped in the Horsham District are: Amberley - School Road, High Street, East Street, and Crossgates Ashington - London Road Barns Green - Coolham Road, Chapel Road, Emms Lane, Trout Lane, Two Mile Ash Road, Sandhills Road, and Plumtree Cross Lane

At a Horsham District Council Cabinet Meeting on 28 November, councillors approved a unique partnership between the Council and the Sussex Wildlife Trust. This will build on the already close working relationship between the two organisations. The aim of the partnership is to ensure that the District’s natural environment is enhanced and protected so that it remains an attractive place to live, work and visit. It will work to reverse the decline in species and habitats across the District, as well as contribute to tackling and reducing the impacts of climate change.

The new five year partnership aims to: Help wildlife thrive across the Horsham District Create networks of land that are protected and enhanced for wildlife, allowing habitats to expand and species populations to increase, which will ensure that they are resilient to change Increase awareness of actions that communities can take to improve their local natural environment and the benefits that wildlife provides Maximise the opportunities from protecting and enhancing wildlife in tackling climate change and reduce the impacts of a changing

climate. A new project called ‘Wilder Horsham District’ will take a district approach to the wildlife challenges that sees species decline across our local landscape. The proposed partnership supports the Council’s recently published Corporate Plan for 2019 to 2023, which sets out one of its major ambitions to prioritise the protection of our environment as we move to a low carbon future. In June 2019, the Council committed to reducing its carbon footprint and working towards the national target of becoming carbon neutral. Commenting on the new partnership, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “We really welcome this great opportunity for us to enhance the natural heritage and ecology of our District by teaming up with such a well-respected organisation as the Sussex Wildlife Trust. “As a council we already have a strong track record of dealing with environmental matters, particularly in areas of biodiversity, and we have already built strong working relationships with many community members and partners to help us achieve this. “But there is always more progress to be made. I see this partnership as a major commitment to reversing the decline of wildlife that has taken place over the last few decades. “The partnership will need the further support of residents, businesses and landowners to achieve its ambitious aims.” Chief Executive of Sussex Wildlife Trust Tor Lawrence said: “Sussex Wildlife Trust are thrilled to be entering a long term and meaningful partnership with Horsham District Council. “Together we will be developing a network of habitat for nature’s recovery throughout the District and working with local communities to get this done. “We know it is going to be an exciting journey and we are looking forward to making a real difference for nature. “We applaud Horsham District for recognising the current global ecological crisis and identifying that this really is a priority at a local level.”

Neighbourhood Wardens advise on road safety district wide Horsham District Council’s team of 14 Neighbourhood Wardens recently got involved in Road Safety Action Week by sharing advice and giving away free safety items. This year the campaign theme was ‘Step Up for Safe Streets’ which focused on keeping cyclists and pedestrians safe when out and about. All wardens gave their local newsagents letters for each of their delivery girls and boys, containing information about how to keep safe when out in the dark mornings. In addition, the warden teams undertook the following activities in their different communities: Ashington – visited the local toddler group Shining Stars to run some road safety activities including giving out stickers and postcards. The wardens talked to them about being safe whilst crossing the road, as well as talking to parents about safe parking. Billingshurst – gave out free lights, reflectors and slap bands to all paper delivery girls/boys and also to young people at the skate park. They also fixed lights to their scooters, as necessary. Horsham – attended Forest and Tanbridge House secondary schools to give out reflective slap bands and bike lights and offered UV marking. The wardens also ran a bike safety session in the town centre, reminding cyclists to dismount in pedestrian-only areas and offering UV marking and lights. Pulborough – interacted with the primary school, youth club, school walking bus, joggers, dog walkers and horse-riders about being seen in the dark. As well as advice, they also gave out high-vis stickers and slap bands. Southwater – talked to Budgens newsagent about their monthly health and safety bike checks and provided funding for some high visibility safety vests. Storrington – provided activity packs for Little Bears Pre-school in Sullington. Themes covered were crossing the road safely and sitting in car seats properly. Kate, one of the helpers, commented:“The children really enjoyed the activities and especially loved learning about the traffic light system, and holding hands when walking and crossing the road. They were important safety messages but with an element of fun.” The local cycle shop ran a free safety check for newsagent delivery girls/boys bikes and offered a discount on parts as required. Steyning – met with the manager at Martin’s Newsagent to discuss safety issues.

Horsham school finalist in Virgin Media’s national TV Christmas competition Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School has been shortlisted as a finalist in Virgin Media’s The winning school, now has the chance to have its festive play professionally recorded and televised to the nation this Christmas. The school in Horsham could see its Christmas play taken from the school hall to millions of TV screens across the UK after being named as a national finalist in Virgin Media’s Christmas Stars competition. Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School entered their festive play into the competition to find the UK’s best primary school play. The school now has the chance to have its play professionally filmed and televised to four million Virgin TV customers in the days leading up to Christmas. As part of the money-can’tbuy-prize, the winners will work with TV presenter, Stephen Mulhern, who will join the school’s cast playing the role of narrator for a one-off performance. The play that the school entered is a twist on Charles Dicken’s classic novel, ‘A Christmas Carol’. In this contemporary version, Scrooge is transported back to the time of the dinosaurs, workhouse orphans, as well a lunar visit to the Moon to meet aliens. During his journey, Scrooge is visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve

who encourage him to change his ways. In its entry, Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School said they deserved to win because: “We present A Christmas Carol - with a twist! Why not send the grumpy Mr Scrooge back to the time of the dinosaurs and then to another planet? “QE2 School is a school who cater for students with profound and complex learning needs. Our students thrive through their creative arts studies and performances and come to life through their amazing and quirky performances! What a joyous way to celebrate Christmas with our very special young people.” Incredible prizes As well as being shortlisted to have its Christmas play televised on Virgin TV, Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School is also guaranteed to win a prize. The winners of the competition will unwrap £5,000 and receive unforgettable experiences thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit West End show, School of Rock the Musical. A class from the school will be invited to the show’s Gillian Lynne Theatre in London for an electric, rip-roaring performance masterclass from the cast. Afterwards, the children will also be treated to tickets to watch the blockbuster show and see the talented cast in action.

To keep the Christmas spirit going, School of Rock the Musical will generously give the winning school 10 ukuleles so they can strum their way into 2020. And, as it’ll be the season of goodwill, there are plenty of other prizes. The runner up school will win £1,000 plus 15 ukuleles, while 22 regional finalists will win £100 and 2 ukuleles each. David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, said: “A huge congratulations to Horsham’s Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School for being named as a finalist in our magical Christmas Stars competition. “Its production has the perfect ingredients for a feel-good festive play which could be enjoyed by millions of Virgin TV customers this Christmas. “Stay tuned to find out who will be our winner – good luck to everyone at the school!” Festive Final A panel of judges including Stephen Mulhern and representatives from Virgin Media and School of the Rock the Musical, will preside over the shortlist and select the winner, runner up and 22 regional finalists. Virgin Media will then film the school’s production and make it available, on-demand, to millions of Virgin TV customers this Christmas.

A team of 34 took on one of the top ten trekking trails in the world to raise money for local children and their families who know they don’t have long together. After seven days in Peru and 52km of tough trails, Chestnut’s Inca Trail trekkers, including charity Patron Jodie Kidd, are on track to raise over £140,000 for Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. Reaching altitudes of up to 4,200m, the team members stepped out of their comfort zones, traversed peaks and valleys and explored fascinating ruins to conquer the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. They hiked through subtropical vegetation, cloud forest and archaeological sites, encouraging each other along the way. Amongst the group was Zoe Gilbert, who took on the challenge in memory of her son Connor who was one of the first children to use the children’s hospice. The family’s journey began after they noticed that Connor wasn’t meeting his expected milestones. After extensive investigations and hospital visits the family still had no diagnosis and, at the age of six, Connor began having seizures. The family were then introduced to Chestnut Tree House, and, during this time Connor amazed everyone by improving, and eventually came off the ventilator and even started going to school. Connor did well for a year but unfortunately fell ill and sadly passed away in 2006. “Chestnut enabled me to feel like a mum, rather than just a carer; allowing me to enjoy time with Connor and laugh and smile,” said Zoe. “I’ve always wanted to do the Inca Trail and 2019 seemed the perfect time to do it. It would have been Connor’s 21st birthday this year, so it felt special to do something

this big and be raising money for Chestnut Tree House at the same time. “It was an incredible journey and I even conquered my fear of flying and heights along the way! I am so glad to be part of such an amazing team, and what a way to have celebrated Connor’s 21st birthday. There was something very spiritual about the whole experience.” Along the way, the trekkers created their own special memories, with the firm favourite being the life-changing moment they experienced when they stood with the lost city in their sights. Jodie Kidd, Patron of Chestnut Tree House, said: “My favourite part of the challenge was getting to the Sun Gate and then suddenly looking down at Machu Pichu and walking around… it was just incredible. “It was a tough challenge, especially due to the altitude, but we were all doing it for the same reason – to support local children and families by trying to raise as much as possible for this fantastic cause.” Ambrose Harcourt, Vice President of Chestnut Tree House, and Lukas Wojcik, Ambassador, also joined the group taking on the challenge. If you’re a thrill seeker looking for your next life-changing moment, there are still a few places left on Chestnut’s Inca Trail Challenge 2020 (2-11 October). Find out more about how you can witness one of the new seven wonders of the world whilst supporting local children here: www.chestnut-tree-house.org. uk/inca. For your next life-changing moment. For experiencing something new. For local children and their families. For the Now.

Local homes for local people

Saxon Weald recently opened its third development of the year, consisting of eight new homes for affordable rent in the village and civil parish of West Chiltington. Marking the occasion, Saxon Weald presented a cheque for £500 to West Chiltington Parish Council at the official opening of Steele Close on Wednesday 13 November. Council representatives, Saxon Weald staff and board members were joined by Horsham District Council and contractors to celebrate the success of the scheme. Once a horse grazing field owned by Mr Mervyn Webb, the new site,

built in partnership with Westridge Construction, features an additional six homes for shared ownership purchase from The Rural Housing Trust. Initiated in 2011 with West Chiltington Parish Council, work finally began on site in 2018, thanks to the support and approval from Mr Webb, who played a key part in the success of the scheme. Saxon Weald previously managed 36 homes in West Chiltington, however, due to the introduction of the Right to Buy scheme, this number reduced to just 15. As a rural exception site, these new homes in Steele Close are exempt from the

Right to Acquire, enabling Saxon Weald to support West Chiltington Parish Council’s desire to provide more affordable homes for local people. Steven Dennis, Saxon Weald Chief Executive, said: “We’re committed to providing more great homes so people living in the local community can build their futures. Working closely with West Chiltington Parish Council and The Rural Housing Trust has enabled us to do just that, and I wish every resident the very best in their new home”.

Horsham District Council backs national campaign for warm homes National Fuel Poverty Awareness Day this year falls on Friday 29 November and Horsham District Council is supporting the national campaign by offering a free service called LEAP to keep people warm and safe in their own homes. Living in a warm home is essential for our health and wellbeing, but rising energy prices, low incomes and energy inefficient housing means that millions of people across the UK don’t have that option. Locally, Horsham District Council are pleased to be offering a free service called LEAP (Local Energy Advice Partnership) and urges local people worried about keeping warm this winter to apply for a LEAP visit. LEAP can help residents save money and keep homes warm and cosy. A free home visit from qualified energy advisers includes: tariff checks to make sure your paying the cheapest price for heating bills, free energy saving measures, hints and tips and checks that your heating system is

set up efficiently, free telephone advice service for help with benefits, debt and other money problems and referrals for further energy efficiency improvements. Commenting on the availability of the service, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “With the colder weather returning, people are turning their heating back on and thoughts turn to heating costs. “Some of our residents may be worried about the cost of their energy bills and this free advice service can really help people save money and keep their homes warmer during the colder months. “I would urge as many people to sign up for this free service as possible.” The scheme is open to all residents who have a low income, disability related benefits or long-term illness or disability. To apply call 0800 060 7567 or apply online at www.applyforleap.org.uk .

Join the Mediaeval Baebes for a lively and captivating evening filled with uplifting music and exceptional musicianship, as it is wondrously enhanced by the spectacular acoustics in some of the most beautiful venues in the land. Filled with a story-telling magic and lush, ethereal harmonies, the Emmy nominated chart-topping choral ensemble will be performing songs from their uniquely original ‘A Pocketful of Poises’ album, Christmas carols from their hit compilation ‘Of Kings and Angels’ and the uplifting title theme for TV’s Victoria series, along with traditional folk songs and mesmerizing settings of ancient and romantic poetry.

Fran Southgate, Living Landscapes Advisor at Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “We are keen for young people, community groups, social enterprise, community interest companies, schools and student associations to apply with ideas for projects to help combat our current climate emergency in their local area. “We are also grateful to our conference speakers who have made this funding available by waiving their speaker fees to promote climate resilience. “Groups or individuals

can apply, and we are looking forward to receiving some novel and innovative ideas for both practical and creative projects.” The competition will be judged by a professional panel, and the winner announced at the Landscape Innovation Conference at the University of Sussex on 23rd January 2020. You do not have to be a conference delegate to win the prize, but projects must be based in Sussex. The winner will be asked to provide a short report with photos showing the progress and completion of the work. The deadline for applications is Friday 10 January 2020. Don’t let food allergens spoil your Christmas

Horsham District Council Environmental Heath’s Food Safety team are raising awareness among food allergy suffers and hospitality outlets in the Horsham District with the message ‘Don’t let food allergens spoil your Christmas’. The aim of this initiative is to help both the general public and the food industry to be more informed and considerate about food hypersensitivity. Many food allergy sufferers avoid eating out due to the increased risk that eating foods they have not prepared themselves could potentially contain a food allergen or be cross contaminated with traces of a food allergen during preparation. However, seasonal festivities tempt many to take a chance when eating out in order to celebrate Christmas with family, friends and/or work colleagues. Millions of people in the UK have a food allergy. The allergy causes the body’s immune system to react unusually to certain foods. Alarmingly there has been

a stark rise in the number of young people suffering from food allergies leading to a number of high profile cases. As part of their campaign the Council’s Food Safety team have created a YouTube Video to advise businesses on how to manage food allergens in their establishments: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=CkCyK7JahYo and are giving away free badges to any food business for staff to wear with the message ‘Ask me about allergens’. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We are committed to protecting the health of people with food hypersensitivities and improving and increasing their food choices. “This initiative also helps support our local food businesses by encouraging front of house staff to ask customers about allergens before taking food orders. The YouTube video and training provision for food handlers and business owners shows that we take this issue very seriously”.

She added that: “Food allergy sufferers are not being difficult when asking for allergen information and it should never be an embarrassment or inconvenience. They need to make safe food choices as the consequences for some sufferers can be fatal. Speaking up about allergens should not hold any stigma”. Earlier this year the Food Safety team held a number of training workshops in partnership with the leading charity Allergy UK. More than 80 local food business attended the two hour sessions and the Council have arranged to repeat the exercise on 9 January 2020. The aim of the campaign is to encourage a dialog between businesses and the customer. The trade association for the hospitality industry ‘UKHospitality’ recently undertook a survey among its members and found that 40% of allergy complaints were from guests who hadn’t mentioned to the business that they had an allergy. This initiative follows on from last year’s ‘Easy to ASK’ campaign designed to empower young people to ask about allergens when eating out, so that they can make safe choices. Easy to ASK also reminds food establishments to ask customers about their dietary needs, and help put people with food allergies (especially those who are young and may be embarrassed) at ease. It follows the simple prompt: Always ask about allergies Speak Up Keep Safe. For further details of the allergy training workshops and/or receiving free badges, businesses can contact the Horsham District Council Environmental Health team on 01403 215641 or email publichealth.licensing@horsham. gov.uk .

e m i T y t r a P s a m t s i r Ch Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Only seems like Summer was last week - literally. And, as per tradition, here is our annual feature on the best venues to hold your Christmas party this year. Whether it’s for an office do, or a party for friends and family, we have selected a range of our favourite pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels to hopefully give you a wide range of options when you decide to book the best party of the year. If you have been given the responsible task of booking your work’s do, there may be a few things you might want consider... Venue, location, entertainment and cost, are all details you will need to make sure fit with your guest list. Sounds like a daunting task right? Well, don’t despair, here are a few tips from our advertisers, Stevens Drake, on how to organise a Christmas do to remember: Who should you invite? When drawing up the invite list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an effort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason. If staff are encouraged to invite their partners along, allow for the

prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships. Where and when should you hold it? It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to ‘drink and drive’ is clearly inadvisable. So consider whether you have good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do? Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consumption of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff, but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff; make sure that there are plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment? Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up comedian’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about? When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less inhibited and more likely to say

(or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimination and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still required. Oh, and if you are the boss, remember that alcohol and conversions about pay rises don’t mix! The morning after the night before Make sure that people know if they are required to be in work the

day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required. Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’? I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifically to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth considering whether your existing policies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is expected of people in this context.

If not, now is the time to get your house in order. Oh, and make sure you have fun Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your colleagues for their efforts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

We know how to party in style at Christmas! With Christmas just round the corner it’s time to get those parties booked in! South Lodge is ready and waiting to welcome you and your guests, to one of our joiner parties, including a three-course dinner, your very own party box and Christmas crackers for everyone. After dinner, head onto the dance floor where the DJ will be waiting for you to party throughout the night. Amberley Museum’s 40th Anniversary

Amberley Museum celebrated its 40th anniversary earlier this month by launching a new exhibition ‘Meet the Workers… What it was like to work in the Amberley Chalk Pits’, which was opened by the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, Mrs Susan Pyper on Saturday 16 November. The new exhibition, which will remain open in Humphreys Barn until March next year, includes many photographs that have never been displayed before and looks at some of the personal stories of the people who worked at Amberley until the chalk pits finally closed in the 1960s. A magnificent cake in the shape

of the De Witt lime kilns at the Museum was formally cut by BBC presenter and Museum supporter Nicholas Owen. This was kindly donated for the occasion by Noel Granger of Arcana Cake Craft. Find them on Facebook as @arcanacakecraft or email Noel on arcanacakes@gmail.com. There was a full programme of activities over the weekend, including a series of expert talks on the chalk and lime industry for enthusiasts, arranged by Museum volunteer, Roger Kevern, together with some practical demonstrations of lime mixing kindly provided by East Sussex company Chalk Down Lime.

Children were treated to a Victorian School Day with scary schoolmistress Suzy Duxbury and children from Dramatis, a local drama school, which also staged in the office Mr and Mrs Pepper, the owners of the Amberley Chalk Pits to delight visitors. A particular highlight for many was seeing resident locomotive ‘Burt’ (which is similar to the engine that worked at the chalk pits in the 1920s). Burt was pulling Pepper & Sons trucks on a small stretch of standard gauge track at the Museum, representing the type of wagons that would have serviced the lime kilns. Museum Director Valerie Mills said: “A big thank you to everyone who helped us to celebrate our first 40 years last weekend, in particular the Lord-Lieutenant for opening our new exhibition, and Nicholas Owen for his support in cutting the cake. The weekend would not have been possible without the support of our volunteers and guest speakers, Chalk Down Lime, Dramatis and Matt Lovell, who supplied a model railway layout. We hope that as many people as possible will visit the Museum over the winter to enjoy the new exhibition.” Amberley Museum is now open throughout the winter, apart from a Christmas closure from December 23 until the January 10..

Brighton Philharmonic at The Dome, Sunday 1 December Review Phil Dennett A return to more familiar musical territory on Sunday after the boldness of the opening concert was appreciated by the audience. In Haydn’s Symphony number 49, conductor Natalie MurrayBeale made sure in the opening movement that its often reflective mood never became morose. The Brighton Philharmonic strings showed a delightful lightness of touch amidst the energy of the second movement and were equally nimble on their feet for the menuetto. A hint of fire and spirit propelled the concluding presto movement. Throughout the concert Murray-Beale showed a graceful demeanour in keeping with the programme, never resorting to showy histrionics. The adagio to Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus was sumptuous without being over-sweet and the orchestra captured the folky soul of the pieces, with some fine harp playing. Another Vaughan Williams

piece, the treasured The Lark Ascending, did exactly what it said on the tin, with soloist Thomas Gould sounding like a force of nature as he took the audience on a serene flight of fancy, helped by some marvellous decoration from strings, woodwinds and horns. The inclusion of Mozart’s delightful Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was apt, given that he and Haydn were friends and Haydn modestly considered Mozart a superior composer. The ever-popular piece was all it should be, light, charming and elegant with a touch of vitality and the audience loved it. The innovations of Haydn’s Symphony Number 45 were testing for the orchestra, especially the allegro assai. But they conjured the spirit and tenderness of this piece admirably, using soft footfalls of strings and oboe echoes to bring out the beauty of the adagio. The finale was a masterpiece of humour, with the orchestra gradually leaving the stage to the amusement of the crowd, leaving only two players to conclude a very good afternoon’s music making.

Mailman releases Christmas single in aid of Shelter UK ‘A Thing Called Christmas’, the 12th and final 2019 single from Horsham based Mailman’s third album S3ASON (season three), is released on 13th December in aid of Shelter UK and features Christ’s Hospital Choral Society. Mailman frontman Jamie ‘Stan’ Stanley said: “It was around June when it dawned on me that my project idea of releasing a quickfire pop single every month in 2019 meant that a Mailman Christmas special

had become as inevitable as, erm, Christmas. I don’t even like Christmas... So the challenge then became to write something I could live with that also ticked all the boxes of the truly great Christmas songs, the likes of Slade, Wizzard, Emerson Lake & Palmer and The Darkness. I’m very happy with it and intend to do my bit to tackle the UK’s homelessness crisis by donating the proceeds from it to Shelter UK. If enough of you support it and get it in the Christmas

chart, that will generate a decent amount of money for a very worthy cause. So do it now, you know it makes sense!” You can do your bit by visiting www.athingcalledchristmas.co.uk and pre-ordering/buying the single from Google Play, Amazon or the iTunes store before the 20th December. Bellway unveils new showhomes at Billingshurst development

A room filled with furniture and a large window Two new showhomes have

been launched at an attractive new housing development in West Sussex.

Quote The District Post when booking

The three-bedroom and fourbedroom showhomes are now open to the public at Bellway’s 86-home Amblehurst Green site in Billingshurst, near Horsham. The development consists of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes, with prices starting from £359,995. It will also include play areas for children, a nature reserve and extensive landscaping. Daniel Williamson, Head of Sales for Bellway South London, said: “Enquiries always skyrocket when well-designed showhomes open on site – and both these showhomes are fantastic. “I’d advise people thinking of buying a new home from a fivestar builder in West Sussex to get in touch as soon as possible.” The three-bedroom detached Cherry showhome has a stunning open-plan kitchen and dining area with a separate utility room, a separate dual-aspect living room, an en-suite to bedroom one and a modern family bathroom. The four-bedroom detached Blackthorn showhome features a large open-plan kitchen and dining area and a stylish living room with a bay window. Upstairs, bedroom one also has a bay window – plus an en-suite bathroom. There are three more generous-sized bedrooms and a modern family bathroom. Bellway’s neighbouring development, The Courtyard at Amblehurst Green, is also now selling off-plan from the

Amblehurst Green sales office. It comprises 18 homes – three, four and five-bedroom – built around two farmstead-style courtyard spaces. The homes at The Courtyard at Amblehurst Green are being built to echo the local environment, with the inclusion of hanging tiles, sash windows and chimneys. Both developments are part of a wider consortium scheme which will provide much-needed new homes for West Sussex, as well as delivering a new primary school, a new creche, a new dental surgery and an extension to the doctors’ surgery. The scheme will also provide £1.72 million worth of contributions by builders to the local community, including £150,000 towards a new synthetic pitch at The Weald Community School, £243,506 for the expansion of the doctors’ surgery, and £108,400 towards sustainable transport. There will also be contributions towards recycling, the fire service and local nursery education. Daniel Williamson said: “Amblehurst Green is our first development in Billingshurst and we are proud to be part of a scheme which will create a legacy for the village in the form a high quality new residential neighbourhood.” The sales office at Amblehurst Green is located off East Street, Billingshurst, RH14 9DA. For more information call 0333 577 8981 or visit bellway.co.uk.

Questions to ask when selling your home Selling your home is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. The financial implications are substantial and it could be a stressful experience. There are lots of things to consider, not least which estate agent to help you through process. Here are 5 questions you should ask your estate agent when deciding to sell your home...

1. What will you charge? There’s never been more choice when choosing an estate agent to sell your home. From traditional high street agents, to online services and hybrids, knowing which is best can be a difficult decision. Remember to ask if the fee is all-inclusive and whether it is paid upfront or at the end of the process.

2. How long am I tied in for? Before signing on the dotted line, establish how long you will be tied to their contract. Most agents will stipulate that your property remains with them as a sole agency for a number of weeks. Once that initial period is up, if your property hasn’t been sold you can change agents or market with more than one agent.

3. What asking price should I set?

Farhalls Crescent – For Sale £585,000 Offering all the space a growing family could need, this bright and spacious four bedroom detached house is located in a popular residential area only a few minutes’ walk from Littlehaven station.

The beauty of traditional high street agents is the knowledge they have regarding the local market. While the asking price decision is ultimately yours, having the full picture from a well informed and knowledgeable agent can really help.

4. Is my property ready to be sold? Getting your agent’s opinion on your property and its condition is a great way to prepare for the marketing process. The agent should know the kind of decor that is appealing to buyers in your area and be able to suggest improvements to make it appeal to more buyers.

5. Is it the best time to sell a house in the UK?

The property has been expertly extended to create a large main living room with adjoining dining area both giving direct access to the secluded rear garden. The stunning refitted kitchen has been finished to an exceptional standard, with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and ample worktop space. Upstairs you will find the large family bathroom, an en-suite shower room and all the bedrooms are complemented by fitted wardrobes.

There are good and not-so-good times to sell your home. Spring, Summer, Autumn all have different positives and negatives so you should consider your agent’s knowledge of the market conditions before deciding to sell. If you are thinking of putting your property up for sale call us on 01403 248222 for up to date market advice or pop in to our office just off the Carfax in Horsham town centre.

Horsham Market Overview Over the last 12 months there have been 2,025 transactions in Horsham. Horsham U23s power through to Challenge Cup Semi Final Photo by John Lines

Improving Horsham floored by Old Bords Saturday November 30 Premier – Division 2 East – Old Bordenian Men 2-0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Monday December 2 Sussex Under 23s Challenge Cup – Quarter Final Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s Development Squad gave themselves a great early Christmas present by making it through to the semi-finals of the Sussex U23s Challenge Cup, prevailing in a thriller against Eastbourne Town. The game had a bit of everything; thrills, spills, red cards, extra-time and, most of all, ten goals, including some spectacular examples. Yet, the game opened quietly with no hint of the impending goal feast. With both sides guilty of over hitting their long forward passes, there was little in the way of an initial goal threat, until the visitors opened the scoring against the run of play just inside 20 minutes, Tyler Scrafton – one of five Town players with first team experience this season converting a cross from the right. But there was an instant reply from the Hornets with goal machine Goddard finishing calmly to equalise. With Horsham enjoying the better possession, they took the

lead in the 27th minute when Brooker chased down a ball to cross where Harry Law was lurking, ready to curl a delightful strike from 20 yards into the top left hand corner. With the lively George Cooke, another with first team experience, starting to find plenty of room on the left wing Eastbourne looked the more dangerous, but his long, dispossessing run ended with a shot just wide of the post, the score remaining 2-1 in Horsham’s favour at the break. Eastbourne started the second period brightly with Scrafton’s attempt deflected for a corner. Although enjoying a period of sustained possession, Town were stunned by a piece of magic from Goddard, curling in a wonderful angled shot that dipped into the top left hand corner, giving visiting ‘keeper Karl James no chance. Further Horsham possibilities came and went, but, the young Eastbourne side were right back in the contest when George Cooke hit a screamer from 20 yards to reduce the deficit and he got his second, minutes later, with another great strike which ‘keeper Seb Jacobides got his hand to but could not prevent. With either side capable of

winning, the pendulum swung Horsham’s way when Town were reduced to ten men, Harry Colbran getting a straight red card for a two-footed challenge. However, battling Town regrouped and with Horsham unable to make the extra man count, the referee’s whistle signalled extra time, with the score 3-3. Opportunities followed at both ends, but, Horsham regained the lead when Paget headed in from a corner from the left wing to go into the final 15 minutes 4-3 ahead. Town, though, were not about to surrender, and drew level again, the outstanding Cooke doing the damage with a great strike from distance, bending the ball into the top right hand corner for his hat-trick. But, Goddard doesn’t like to be outgunned and, with eight minutes left, showing great determination, he outpaced the Eastbourne defence to latch onto the ball and pick his spot with his left foot. And, it was left to Goddard to seal victory, dispossessing a tired defender before slotting past James for his fourth goal and Horsham’s sixth. In the semi-final Horsham will meet the winners of Loxwood v Hassocks, away, on January 10th.

The home tie will take place at The Camping World Community Stadium on Tuesday December 17th, kick-off 7.45pm. The ‘all pay’ match will be decided by penalties if the scores are level at the end of 90 m

Horsham are still searching for an all too elusive win and, while they have had games that they could have won, this was a game, against mid table Old Bordenian in Sittingbourne, that they should have won. Horsham took the field with their strongest line up of the season, albeit with only a squad of 12, Horsham Seconds being similarly impoverished. However, the game was marked by the seasonal first team debut of sorely missed drag flicker Sean Pearcy, on his temporary return to these shores to attend to family matters. Horsham had most of the game, but the crucial difference was that Old Bords scored both of the goals generated by the encounter. Horsham, though, successfully held off the visitors throughout the goal-less first half. After the break, the first goal came from a defensive aberration, a defender allowing the ball to run past him near the goal line thinking it would go off, and not spotting the attacker standing waiting for it. A two on one ensued and the goal resulted. A Horsham highlight was the first playing appearance of Coach Andy Blood, who, before and

after the first goal, played a blinder. But, a telling factor was the visitors’ short corner routines – they only earned three, but scored once, whereas Horsham had eight, without threatening the goal. But, Old Bords did not have any chances from open play other than their first goal. Horsham had much the better penetration, but without the ball running for the forwards. Live wire Joey Humphreys could have scored two or three and was taken out by the keeper when one-on-one, signalling a penalty to everyone, except, importantly, the man with the whistle. Humphreys had two other good chances that failed to materialise, one inadvertently blocked by a teammate. Zak Chinn and Toby Fraser returned to the side, but, although ring rusty, gave it their best shot. It was heartening to see the improvement made by the young players, as witnessed by Horsham looking the better team, and the injection of Coach Blood’s ability, experience and leadership – lacking elements prior to his induction, provides hope. There is plenty of ground to be made up, but a win might work wonders for confidence and morale. This Saturday, in their last game ahead of the Christmas and New Year break, which hopefully will not be too unsettling, Horsham return home to take on Canterbury 2 at Christ’s Hospital (11.30 push back).

Horsham thwarted by controversial late send off Saturday November 30 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 2 2 Bedford Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Although a draw was a good result for Horsham against upper table visitors last Saturday, Horsham was well placed to win and felt in a strong position to do so, but for the intervention of a controversial umpiring decision. Bedford, though, scored in the first five minutes, but Horsham fought back strongly, with Fran Crossley keeping up her scoring tally in the second quarter with a field goal when she flicked the ball past a defender and keeper to level the score, which remained one apiece at the break. In the third quarter Charlotte “CJ” White scored from a short corner, Horsham retaining the lead until the final minutes,

when CJ was seemingly harshly yellow carded. While she was off the field Bedford scored with Horsham a player down, the game finishing 2-2 with points shared, Fran Crossley telling the District Post: “In view of Bedford’s strength, to be honest we would have been happy with a point before the game, but we were 2-1 up with four mintes to go when CJ went off, so of course we’re gutted to be deprived of two points that we thought we’d earned.” Horsham are sixth, while Barnes and Wimbledon top the table on level pegging, with Southgate third. On Saturday in their last game before the extended Christmas and New Year break, Horsham has a long trip to Suffolk to play beleaguered Ipswich, cemented to the bottom of the table and yet to break their points scoring duck following nine straight losses. Horsham beat Ipswich 3-1 when they visited in November.

Saturday November 30 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 0 -3 Margate Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Inconsistent, mid-table Margate humbled disappointing Horsham in front of a record home attendance – 747 - at The Camping World Community Stadium last Saturday. Coming into the game Horsham were top and Margate, fancied pre season, had won just 6 of their previous 16 games, but spectators could have been forgiven for thinking that the positions were reversed, espe-

cially in the second half. Although Horsham started brightly and kept Margate at bay for most of the first half, two second half goals sealed the Hornets’ fate. But, in the opening exchanges, Horsham made the early running, with visiting keeper Joe Tupper relieved to gather Kieran Pamment’s threatening free kick. Then, with barely 5 minutes on the clock, Chris Smith was denied a shot, again Tupper preventing a score. Pamment pressed again, but shot straight at Tupper. With the Kent side coming more into the game, Keddell Daniel tested the home defence, only to finish poorly. Horsham were still pushing and when Smith went down ap-

peals for a penalty went unheeded. But, Margate might have gone ahead after half an hour, Prestedge had a heading opportunity, but generously supplied a teammate, whereupon the visitors failed to capitalise when Horsham delayed clearance. The Hornets escaped, but parity was not maintained for long – Noel Leighton getting the ball into the corner of the net after a kind deflection with Horsham at sea. The Hornets soon recovered and came close to equalising, but Lea Dawson could only singe the cross bar from Pamment’s corner. Margate was then indebted to Tupper for negating Jack Brivio’s lobbing header, the visitors leading 1-0 at the break.

Restarting, Horsham were very much still in the game and might have levelled the score, but Tupper dived to palm away Smith’s strike. Another Horsham effort was blocked as Horsham made changes designed to produce a goal. Yet, it was Margate who scored next when Kieran Monlouis got through to unleash a blast, which Bentley seemed to have under control before the ball somehow entered the goal. Margate then twisted the knife with their third, Daniel thrusting through to evade defenders and pass to Adem Ramadan to put the result beyond all doubt, successfully closing down game to take all of the points. The town has been a happy

hunting ground for Margate this season, ‘The Blues’ eliminated Horsham YMCA from the FA Cup at Gorings Mead in September, albeit by a single goal in a close fought encounter. Horsham and Margate’s last match was in the Gorings Mead ground share days, ending in a home defeat seven years ago. Despite last Saturday’s reverse, Horsham remain top, on level points with Folkestone, thanks to a one goal difference, after Invicta were held to an unexpected nil-nil draw on a visit to 14th-placed Lewes’ Dripping Pan. Horsham visit Folkestone Invicta on Saturday, meanwhile the Kent side – who beat Horsham 1-0 when they visited in August – have a game in hand.

Horsham YMCA suffer defeat at lowly Pagham Saturday November 30 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Pagham 2-1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter With Pagham hovering just above the relegation zone, YM

travelled to Bognor’s Nyetimber Lane hoping to collect three points, and the scores were level for 35 minutes of the game, but YM were unable to get back on equal terms after the hosts scored their second goal a quarter an hour from time. Joe Clarke opened the scoring for Pagham in the 29th

minute, the score remaining 1-0 at the break. Then, after YM substitutions, Tony Nwachukwu equalised mid way through the second half, just before being yellow carded. But, Pagham soon regained, the lead from which YM were unable to recover, the defeat leaving YM 12th in the table with 21 points, on level

pegging with both AFC Uckfield Town (10th) and Little Common (11th). Eastbourne Town remain runaway leaders, clear of Peacehaven & Telscombe, who have Lancing breathing down their necks in the third spot. Meanwhile, Loxwood are bottom with five draws, but no wins, with

Hassocks occupying the penultimate berth On Saturday YM return home for a league encounter against 13th-placed Alfold, looking to avenge the 5-3 defeat at the hands of their Surrey near neighbours when the teams last met, over the border in August, when the young YM side was undone by late home goals.
