The biggest change came from the Liberal Democrats who gained 11 per cent of votes since 2017, whereas Labour lost 6.8 per cent of voters. The Conservatives also suffered a slight loss of 2.8 per cent. The Green party gained 1.2 per cent and the Peace Party gained 0.3 per cent. On his Facebook page, Jeremy Quin who took over from Francis Maude in 2015, said: “I am deeply grateful to have been re-elected to serve as MP for Horsham with a majority of 21,127 having received 57 per cent of votes cast. The constituency had a high turnout at 73 per cent - despite the dreadful weather. “It’s been a long campaign conducted through the dark winter months, I am thrilled by the result locally and nationally. Dangerous Christmas lights are being sold online, an investigation by West Sussex Trading Standards has revealed. Trading Standards officers bought four types of lights from a popular online marketplace website and sent them for safety testing. All failed the tests, with three products posing a serious risk of electrocution. This was because of their easily accessible live parts or claims they were suitable for outdoor use when their construction clearly did not meet the required standard. Other issues included unsafe wiring in the plug and a lack of instructions for safe use. Customers are being urged to only buy recognised brands from known UK sellers. Peter Aston, West Sussex Trading Standards Team Manager, said: “We expected to find some issues when we sent these brands for testing but the fact that all of them failed is very concerning. “Three of the products posed a serious risk of electric shock so could have had fatal consequences for the user. “The market place site in this case has now removed these products from their listings, but we feel they should be doing much more

to keep buyers safe and they need to take more responsibility for the products they list. We will be sharing our concerns with the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards.” Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “With Christmas fast approaching I would urge customers to take the advice of Trading Standards officers and only buy lights and electricals from a recognised brand or business.” Anyone who thinks they have purchased an unsafe product, should contact Trading Standards at www.westsussex.gov.uk/tsreport or via Citizens Advice on 03454 04 05 06.

Peter Pan cast help out with Salvation Army Gift Appeal

With just days to go until Opening Night, several members of this year’s Capitol pantomime cast took time out from their busy rehearsal schedule to help local Independent Estate Agents Brock Taylor with The Salvation Army’s Christmas Gift Appeal last Saturday. Many generous local people popped in to the Estate Agents town centre office and donated an amazing selection of games, teddies, dolls and Lego which will be wrapped and distributed to children

who might not otherwise receive a Christmas present. There was a treat for some of those people who walked through the door with their gifts when they came face to face with the pantomime characters of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Mini Smee and Big Chief Chillaxin’ Cow! It was a great opportunity for them to chat and find out more about this year’s family pantomime at The Capitol, Horsham which runs from Friday 13 December until Sunday 5 January. Brock Taylor Estate Agents, this year’s primary Pantomime Spon-

sors, ran a draw for all the people who donated gifts to the appeal and Anthony Sahota who stars as Peter Pan drew the winning ticket for one lucky family to see to this year’s spectacular production of Peter Pan. Whilst there the fun-loving Pantomime cast members chatted to lots of Christmas shoppers who were passing by the office and even Jeremy Quin took time out from canvassing for this Thursday’s Election to chat to the cast.

Major milestone achieved for new Horsham school

Horsham District Council is pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for a new school at the north of Horsham development site. The permission is the Reserved Matters application (ref DC/19/1730) to assess the details of the school, including its design and layout. This follows outline permission for the development of the north of Horsham site in 2018. The new school has been brought forward by the Department for Education in consultation with Legal & General, who are the master developer for the whole of the site. It will be a new Bohunt school and will provide a nursery for 50 pupils, a primary school for 420 pupils; including a reception, and a secondary school for 1200 pupils. The school will also include

a separate sports building, multi-use games areas and sports pitches. Works are expected to start on site this spring 2020. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “I am delighted that we have achieved this key milestone in the development of a new school for Horsham. “Horsham District is in urgent need of school places and the new school will go a long way to addressing this need. “Currently, Bohunt Horsham are in temporary accommodation at Hurst Road, Horsham. It is anticipated that they will move into their brand new accommodation at the North Horsham site in September 2021.” Sebastian Balcombe, Senior Land and Planning Manager at Legal & General, added: “We welcome approval of the planning application for Bohunt Horsham School, which is one of the many benefits of the sustainable new community at land north of Horsham. “We look forward to working with the relevant authorities to support the delivery of the school as we progress our plans for the first phase of the development.”

Dame Julie Walters presents Samaritans awards at Collyer’s Christmas card comp

Collyer’s welcomed Dame Julie Walters to present awards to students who won the sixth prestigious Collyer’s Samaritans Christmas Card Competition 2019. The winning entries are now being used as the Samaritans Christmas card design for this year, available at local charity venues and Horsham Museum’s Charity Christmas Card Shop. The winners were: Darby Lyons, Chloe Marsh, Nick McArthur, and double prize winner Charlotte Williams. Dame Julie Walters, Patron of the Horsham and Crawley Samaritans, presented the prizes, kindly donated by Seawhite, to the talented winners, with Jamie McArthur thrilled to accept the prize on behalf of his brother Nick. The original winning designs were judged by a panel comprising Samaritans’ Kevin Hawkes, Sue Jago, Caroline Thomas, and Jo Willis, with local artists John Connolly and Yvonne Sillett, alongside Anna Carter of Seawhite. Kevin Hawkes, Director of Horsham Samaritans, acknowledged the timely work the Samaritans are doing in a world increasingly aware of the necessity for good mental health. He commented on the difficulty of choosing just five images to represent the Samaritans during the holiday season and applauded the students and the Art department for their willingness to participate in making a positive contribution to their community. Susie McAlister, Head of Art and Design at Collyer’s, organised the event and introduced young artists Jasmine Dilloway and Ellie Rogers, who performed a short presentation that highlighted the work that the Samaritans do every day. They explained that on any given year,

the charity will answer five million calls for help, 20,000 volunteers will give their time, with 17,000 trained as listeners, and over 2,000 volunteers running 201 branches. Susie McAlister said: “Mental health and wellbeing is an issue which affects our whole society and something our young people are particularly aware of. The Samaritans give our young artists an opportunity to raise money for a cause they feel helps everyone in our local area, irrespective of age, political agenda, or personal circumstances, remembering that Christmas can be a lonely and isolating time of year for some. The Art department and the college are pleased to be a small part of the contribution they make to the local community.” The Collyer’s students actually began designing the cards during the summer term, so to create a seasonal feel their teachers adorned the studios with tinsel and even played Christmas music while fans cooled the art rooms down! Ian McAlister, Director of HE and Progression at Collyer’s, teaches art at the Ofsted Outstanding college. He said: “It certainly takes a lot of imagination to get excited about Christmas in July, but this is all part of teaching students how a professional brief works!” Collyer’s Principal, Sally Bromley, said: “Within the Collyer’s community, the Samaritans charity is really close to our hearts and we are privileged to have such a special relationship with them. “Massive thanks to Julie for coming to visit us today to present the awards to Charlotte, Chloe, Darby, and Nick for their fantastic Christmas card designs. Everyone should go and buy some!”

Young traders show off their business skills on Small Business Saturday in Horsham On Saturday 7 December, alongside the hardened Horsham Market stallholders, students from five Sussex schools demonstrated their entrepreneurial skills by selling products from new businesses they have set up for this year’s Young Enterprise competition. Appropriately, it was Small Business Saturday and two companies from Millais Girls School and one from Collyer’s College in Horsham, joined Hurstpierpoint College and Imberhorne and Sackville schools from Mid Sussex in competing for Best Trade Stand, as part of the Young Enterprise competition for this area. The Small Business Saturday event and Young Enterprise’s involvement was co-ordinated and supported by Horsham District Council. A dry, calm day meant the rookie traders from Young Enterprise were able to make some

significant sales, with some very appropriate Christmas products for around the tree and stocking fillers on offer. Each company, which runs for one whole academic year and has to set up as a proper business, receives mentoring from local business people. They learn how to manage finances, write a business plan, market their products and in most cases manufacture them as well. The Horsham Christmas trade fair is an annual event which gives the companies their first real taste of selling to the public and the students gain a mass of experience from the day. The products on offer ranged from hand-made dolls made from recycled material, a gym in a bag, hair scrunchies and charms and key rings. The student companies were judged by local businessman, Steve Fowler, who asked lots of probing questions but also of-

Lions Golf Day funds playground for Jigsaw School pupils with autism Early years pupils at Jigsaw School for children with autism on Dunsfold Park are now enjoying a new roundabout, slide and resurfaced playground after Billingshurst and District Lions Club raised a massive £5,500 at their annual Golf Day. Lion president Joan Bobker visited the school with members Michael Bobker and Patrick Windsor Brown to see the new playground in action and to present the cheque to Jigsaw Trust. “This amazing sum has made such a difference to our pupils,” said Robin Legge, Head of Fundraising at Jigsaw. “The playground is so important, not only providing physical activity but also promoting turn-taking, social interaction and motor skills.

In addition we are having a road painted on the surface to help teach road safety skills and provide extra motivation and challenge to pupils using trikes. “We are hugely thankful to Billingshurst Lions for organising such a successful Golf Day and supporting Jigsaw in this way. The Billingshurst Lions are fantastic friends to Jigsaw and have also been helping out with decorating and maintenance across the school over the last few months.” Lions President Joan Bobker said, “This was a magnificent result and we thank everyone who supported the Golf Day: the sponsors, participants and volunteer helpers, and Slinfold Golf and Country Club for hosting the event.”

fered advice and feedback about their stall displays and customer service skills. There was a £50 prize up for grabs for the Best Trade Stand. On the day the prize went to the Hurstpierpoint College company: ‘Reco’, who manufactured recycled material dolls with a strong environmental message. The next part of the competition sees all companies taking part in a Dragon’s Den style Boardroom session at the beginning of February, when they get to present their business ideas, performance data, successes and challenges. The final showcase and awards event takes place at the end of April where the area’s Young Enterprise Company of the Year winner will be crowned. The winner and runner up go on to the County Finals in May and potentially all the way to National and European Finals later in the year.

Horsham charity’s ‘Born Too Soon’ film scoops two prestigious industry awards A film created by Horsham based children’s health charity Action Medical Research has won two awards in the 2019 Event and Visual Communication Association (EVCOM) London Film Awards. The charity’s ‘Born Too Soon’ film, entitled Elijah’s Story, won a Silver Award in the Brand Communication category and a Bronze Award in the Best Script category. Action Medical Research worked with charity specialist content agency, Inspired Films, to create this very special short film. Action’s Director of Communi-

cations, Sarah Moss, said: “This film lies at the heart of our Born Too Soon campaign. Through this, we’re seeking to raise awareness of premature birth and the very difficult and all too often tragic experiences that families may have – and the work we are doing as a charity to help prevent this heartache in the future.” Inspired Films Director Louis Paltnoi said: “We have worked with this amazing children’s charity since 2014. Raising awareness of the need for research to help babies born too soon is so important and has a strong resonance with us. We’re delighted that Elijah’s Story has touched so many people.”

The five minute film shares the heartbreaking experiences of the Halse family whose son Elijah, born extremely prematurely, died at just 37 days old. Funded by Action Medical Research, Professor Rachel Tribe and her team at King’s College London are working to develop a new screening test that can help identify pregnant women who are at increased risk of early delivery. In the film, Professor Tribe describes her hopes to save more babies’ lives: “If we can develop a new test for women in early pregnancy, identifying those at risk would enable appropriate steps to be taken to protect their baby from being born too soon.”

Local schoolchildren fill Horsham station with Christmas cheer

Youngsters from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School serenaded their families, station staff and rail users with carols this week [9 December]. The children, who have severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties or complex needs, also created numerous decorations for a giant Christmas tree next to the station’s ticket gates. Class Teacher and Music Coordinator Rosie Huggett said: “The

children were very excited to come along to the station to sing carols. It’s a great place for us to sing because of all the people coming through. We’re very grateful to Southern for hosting us.” Grandfather John Milborrow, who proudly watched his granddaughter sing, said: “It’s a great idea to have the carol singing at the station; it creates such a lovely atmosphere. It’s a wonder-

ful school.” Rowena Tyler, Sussex Community Rail Partnership Line officer for the Arun Valley Line, has facilitated the school’s activities at the station. She said: “It’s marvellous to have the carols here. The tree was provided by the Aldingbourne Trust and Southern staff decorated it with decorations made by the schoolchildren. The staff at Horsham are so good and get so involved in community activities.” Station Manager Sue Litterick added: “The singing has been so lovely. It’s brightened the day of people passing through the station. We have a wonderful rapport with the school and staff enjoy getting involved in the community activities.” The jungle-themed piano was also decorated by Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School, and it is played regularly by rail users. Dandelion Farewells host remembrance afternoon at Sumners Ponds

based funeral directors continued to offer their support to families and friends who have experienced a loss, whilst enjoying some light refreshments in the Sumners Room. During a relaxed and informal afternoon, guests had the chance to meet together and be amongst others who had suffered a loss, whilst having the opportunity to

chat to the caring Dandelion Farewells team if they wished to do so. Judith Dandy, owner and funeral director for Dandelion Farewells explained “We are mindful of how hard this time of year can be for families and friends. Our experience has shown us that an opportunity to chat and remember a loved one’s life, in an environment such as this without all the hustle of Christmas crowding in, can provide some much-needed respite. And, being able to be with others in a similar position and know that they really understand, is also very welcome for some. Through our aftercare support ‘Remembered Farewells’, we offer ongoing care for all our families after a funeral and it often provides comfort to know that we remember them, as they remember the person who is no longer with them.” With some bringing friends to make the experience easier, the afternoon was filled with memories, peace, some tears and much laughter. Guests were also invited to choose a specially commissioned wooden heart with a message, as a remembrance decoration for their home, in memory of their loved one.

Southern Rail help ex-servicemen and women back into work Southern Rail has teamed up with charity Building Heroes to upskill its new maintenance team and at the same time help ex-servicemen and women back into work (see case study in editor’s notes). Building Heroes works with Chichester College to put military veterans through an intensive five-week course which gives them a Level 1 foundation course in property maintenance from where they can find work. Working in partnership with the charity, Southern is putting its own newly-formed in-house maintenance team through the same training, which helps towards the cost of the charity’s training. In addition, Building Heroes graduates will also be considered for any vacancies in Southern’s team. On Friday, 6 December, the partners celebrated the graduation of the first Southern employee together with 12 ex-servicemen at Southern’s new maintenance depot in Horsham. The depot features a workshop with industrial woodwork and metalworking equipment which will allow Southern to better maintain its stations. Keith Jipps, Infrastructure Director at Govia Thameslink Railway which operates Southern, said: “This partnership with

Building Heroes is hugely important to us as we continue our focus on transforming lives and the communities we work in. “The course, which compresses 12 months of training into just five fantastic weeks of property maintenance learning, will help us give passengers better stations and facilities. “This is a win-win for both of us: we can train our team to new levels of professionalism and provide some funding for Building Heroes to help them with their excellent support of ex-service-

men and women. “I also expect our collaboration to lead to job opportunities for the veterans who have served this country. After all, we know they will have received training in the very skills we are looking for.” Building for Heroes CEO Brendan Williams said: “This is an important partnership for Building Heroes, creating job opportunities for our military learners. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Southern Railway.”

e m i T y t r a P s a m t s i r h C Well, it’s almost that time of year again. Only seems like Summer was last week - literally. And, as per tradition, here is our annual feature on the best venues to hold your Christmas party this year. Whether it’s for an office do, or a party for friends and family, we have selected a range of our favourite pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels to hopefully give you a wide range of options when you decide to book the best party of the year. If you have been given the responsible task of booking your work’s do, there may be a few things you might want consider... Venue, location, entertainment and cost, are all details you will need to make sure fit with your guest list. Sounds like a daunting task right? Well, don’t despair, here are a few tips from our advertisers, Stevens Drake, on how to organise a Christmas do to remember: Who should you invite? When drawing up the invite list, you should aim to be as inclusive as possible. No one should feel left out. Remember to make an effort to invite those who are presently away from work, whether because of maternity leave, sickness or for any other reason. If staff are encouraged to invite their partners along, allow for the

prospect of unmarried couples and same-sex relationships. Where and when should you hold it? It is worth thinking carefully about the venue for your Christmas party. Is it accessible to all, including those with a disability? Can people get home easily? Choosing a venue that might encourage people to ‘drink and drive’ is clearly inadvisable. So consider whether you have good public transport links or ready access to taxis. What should you do? Consider how you make the party appealing to all. Organising an event solely based around the consumption of large quantities of alcohol will no doubt please some of your staff, but it could well be a turn-off for others. In particular, be sensitive to the religious and other beliefs of your staff; make sure that there are plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and that the food allows for a vegetarian option. What about the entertainment? Be careful about the speakers or entertainers that you choose to use. There is a very well known Employment Tribunal case that arose out of the booking of the ‘stand-up comedian’ Bernard Manning. You can probably guess what went wrong there! What should you talk about? When a lot of alcohol has been consumed, people become less inhibited and more likely to say

(or do) precisely what is on their mind. As a result, the risk of discrimination and harassment claims rears its ugly head. So make sure that people understand that this is a work event and a level of professionalism is still required. Oh, and if you are the boss, remember that alcohol and conversions about pay rises don’t mix! The morning after the night before Make sure that people know if they are required to be in work the

day after the Christmas party. If they phone in sick, carefully consider whether it is genuine sickness or the result of over-indulgence. Then consider whether disciplinary action is required. Do your policies need to be given the ‘once-over’? I wouldn’t suggest that you need a policy specifically to cover your Christmas party. But it is worth considering whether your existing policies on conduct, harassment and the like are clear about what is expected of people in this context.

If not, now is the time to get your house in order. Oh, and make sure you have fun Finally, and before I begin to sound too much like the legal equivalent of the ‘Grinch’, the Christmas party is a chance to come together, celebrate a successful year and thank your colleagues for their efforts. It is also an opportunity to have fun. So having taken some sensible precautions, relax, unwind and enjoy yourself. You deserve it!

We know how to party in style at Christmas! With Christmas just round the corner it’s time to get those parties booked in! South Lodge is ready and waiting to welcome you and your guests, to one of our joiner parties, including a three-course dinner, your very own party box and Christmas crackers for everyone. Church setting makes for a wonderful evening of atmospheric music and song The beautiful St Mary’s Church in Horsham was the stunning setting for the Mediaeval Baebes wonderful evening of music and song. With its spectacular architecture, stained glass windows and dramatic lighting, the venue beautifully set the stage for the night and was filled with the harmonic vocals of this incredibly talented septet. Starting with The Angel Gabriel and setting a festive tone by following with God Rest ye Merry Gentleman and Once in Royal David’s City, the Mediaeval Baebes treated guests to an array of contemporary and traditional songs including many of the Christmas favorites from their chart topping album Of Kings and Angels. Whilst playing some unusual mediaeval and folk instruments, the classical choral ensemble sung a variety of lyrics from romantic and mediaeval texts which had been set to original scores, and also entertained with a talented foot percussion treat when performing the song Love Me Broughte. In addition, they delighted their

audience by showcasing stories and nursery rhymes from their new A Pocketful of Posies Album which celebrates the ancient teaching tools that run throughout our folklore and culture, performing the exquisitely arranged Who Killed Cock Robin, The Lion and The Unicorn and The Jabberwocky. Holding their audience captivated with their beguiling musical beauty and ethereal talent as it filled the fittingly historic space, this magical and unique evening was interspersed with humorous narratives which included some of the history behind the pieces, to provide an insight into their origin and historic importance. Drawing to a close, the Mediaeval Baebes who are currently most renowned for their soundtrack to ITV’s hit period drama, Victoria, delighted their guests with the haunting and uplifting title theme for TV’s Victoria, before ending with a less know version of the traditional and favorite Auld Lang Syne.

‘Discounted’ on track for success following Battle of the Bands revamp final The popular band “Discounted”, who feature Collyer’s students, recently performed at the final of the Battle of the Bands Revamp 2019, a competition organised by Jodie Munday, a key player in Horsham’s flourishing live music scene. Discounted previously won the Battle of the Bands at Tanbridge House School in April 2019, which qualified the group for the final, held at the Horsham’s Holbrook Club. The band knew it would be a tough gig, as they were up against a number of semi-professional bands who are already regulars on the regional music circuit. First on, the group performed a mix of songs from Green Day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Franz Ferdinand and gave the first performance of a new track they have written called “Basement”. Although the competition was ultimately won by a talented band

A

called The Farm Boys, Discounted certainly won some over some new fans and will now return to

the studio next month to record “Basement” at QM Studios in Horsham.

Wednesday 29 January 7.30pm, The Hawth Crawley Quickly becoming one of the UK’s most prolific touring art-

ists, wowing crowds with his sensational live show, Irish Country pop star Nathan Carter brings his Born For the Road Tour to The Hawth Crawley on Wednesday 29 January. One of the UK’s most exciting live performers, his energetic showmanship is proving irresistible for fans, even scoring him a prestigious slot performing for Pope Francis in Croke Park in Dublin, as well as shows in Ireland as the 3Arena Dublin and SSE Arena Belfast. This year, he marked St Patricks day with his very own show on BBC Radio Ulster, joined by fellow Country stars Catherine McGrath and Chloe Agnew. With tracks such as Wagon Wheel and I Wanna Dance receiving hit status, he is one of Ireland’s biggest artists, and with an incredible seven top ten albums under his belt, he is well on his

way to becoming a household name. Most recently, the 2018 ‘Born for the Road’ shot straight into the top five at number three. Growing up in a house where Country and Western music filled the air, Nathan was exposed to classic songs of Johnny Cash, Don Williams and Dolly Parton. From the tender age of 4 years old, not only learning to play guitar, piano and accordion, which plays a vital part in his live show, Nathan quickly became head chorister in the Liverpool Boys choir where he toured the world and even performed in front of the Pope in Rome. Nathan Carter will be supported at The Hawth by Claudia Buckley. Tickets priced £32.50 each are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and www. hawth.co.uk.

Friday 13 - Sunday 15 March 7pm, Sat & Sun 3pm, The Hawth Studio “Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest....Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!” Robert Louis Stevenson’s clas-

sic, TREASURE ISLAND, will be brought to life on stage in spring in a brand new adaptation being produced and directed by The Hawth Crawley. The West Sussex theatre, which is best known for presenting work by other companies is taking the

bold step of creating new theatre of its own for the first time in its thirty year history. Dave Watmore, the show’s Producer and General Manager at the venue says, ‘We have collaborated and worked in partnership with theatre companies in the past, and of course we have presented some of the best performances on the touring circuit for the last three decades - All these experiences have taught us so much, and now feels like the right time to create something ourselves, putting all our experiences into a top class production that we can call our own. That is very exciting - for this show and for the future of the theatre.’ Treasure Island will be directed by the internationally acclaimed Sarah Slator and features a superb cast of actors including Hazel Monaghan, Simon Stallard, Ethan

Taylor and Kim Wright, alongside young performers who will be selected at auditions in January 2020. With innovative new staging, The Hawth Studio will be transformed in order to transport audiences to the Admiral Benbow Inn and far beyond, for a night of unforgettable adventure. As young Jim Hawkins is drawn into a world of revenge, pirates and the search for Captain Flint’s gold, unlikely friends will be made, sea shanties will be sung and mutiny will occur as Long John Silver and the crew sail for Treasure Island! Affordable housing provider Stonewater has brought another 14 homes to the Horsham District, with support from Homes England and in partnership with the local council and CALA Homes. Stonewater, a not-for-profit organisation, currently manages 139 homes in the area and a total of 903 homes across West Sussex. In addition to building much needed affordable housing for local people on the site known as Arun Fields, Stonewater and CALA Homes have also funded the development of a play area at The Holbrook Club, a community and leisure facility, which is located next to the scheme. The well-established Club is a hub for the local community, so Stonewater has also provided each of its new customers with a membership to the club for one year, enabling them to take part in social and sports activities at a discounted rate. Arun Fields, located on Jackdaw

Lane in Horsham, comprises of one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom houses for affordable rent, as well as two and three-bedroom houses for shared ownership sale. Shared ownership is a part-buy part-rent scheme that makes buying a brand-new home more affordable for those looking to get onto the property ladder. Each home has been built with increased insulation and a combi boiler, which is more energy efficient and cost-saving than a cylinder system. In addition to easy access to local amenities and play areas, every home has parking provided and has its own garden or access to a communal garden. In addition to the affordable homes, Arun Fields also features a collection of two, three and fourbedroom private homes, with just 12 private homes remaining across the development. Arun Fields provides the perfect balance between idyllic market town

surroundings and high-quality living, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors with the benefit of shops, cafes and local pubs just a stone’s throw away. This is the first development that Stonewater has worked with CALA Homes on in the South East of the country, however they are also working in conjunction with one another on two schemes further north – one in Milton Keynes and the other in Huntingdonshire. Chris Montague, Assistant Director of Development (East), said: “The Horsham District is a very expensive part of the country, where house prices are beyond the reach of many, and where demand exceeds supply. Stonewater has an excellent working relationship with Horsham District Council, having managed houses in the area for a number of years and we are committed to delivering more beautiful homes like this in the future.”

Nick Brown, Land Director at CALA Homes South Home Counties, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Stonewater to deliver much-needed affordable homes in Horsham, particularly for those who are looking to rent or buy. What’s more, we’re always looking for ways to support the local communities in which we build so we’re also pleased to be able to bring a brand new play area to The Holbrook Club, which we hope will be loved and enjoyed by the community for many years to come.” Cllr Tricia Youtan, Cabinet Member for Community and Wellbeing at Horsham District Council, said: “It was a great pleasure to be part of the opening ceremony for this lovely development, which encompasses really excellent accommodation for some of our residents who need help in affording homes which are well-built and in a truly excellent location. Well done Stonewater and their partner CALA Homes.

Questions to ask when selling your home Selling your home is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. The financial implications are substantial and it could be a stressful experience. There are lots of things to consider, not least which estate agent to help you through process. Here are 5 questions you should ask your estate agent when deciding to sell your home...

1. What will you charge? There’s never been more choice when choosing an estate agent to sell your home. From traditional high street agents, to online services and hybrids, knowing which is best can be a difficult decision. Remember to ask if the fee is all-inclusive and whether it is paid upfront or at the end of the process.

2. How long am I tied in for? Before signing on the dotted line, establish how long you will be tied to their contract. Most agents will stipulate that your property remains with them as a sole agency for a number of weeks. Once that initial period is up, if your property hasn’t been sold you can change agents or market with more than one agent.

3. What asking price should I set?

Farhalls Crescent – For Sale £585,000 Offering all the space a growing family could need, this bright and spacious four bedroom detached house is located in a popular residential area only a few minutes’ walk from Littlehaven station.

The beauty of traditional high street agents is the knowledge they have regarding the local market. While the asking price decision is ultimately yours, having the full picture from a well informed and knowledgeable agent can really help.

4. Is my property ready to be sold? Getting your agent’s opinion on your property and its condition is a great way to prepare for the marketing process. The agent should know the kind of decor that is appealing to buyers in your area and be able to suggest improvements to make it appeal to more buyers.

5. Is it the best time to sell a house in the UK?

The property has been expertly extended to create a large main living room with adjoining dining area both giving direct access to the secluded rear garden. The stunning refitted kitchen has been finished to an exceptional standard, with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and ample worktop space. Upstairs you will find the large family bathroom, an en-suite shower room and all the bedrooms are complemented by fitted wardrobes.

Penalty shoot out gets Hornets through in Sussex Senior Cup Tuesday December 3 - Sussex Senior Cup – Third Round Littlehampton Town 1-1 Horsham – Hornets win on penalties Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter It was a late finish at the Sportsfield, Littlehampton, but after a nerve-jangling finale following their last ditch equaliser, Horsham were delighted to progress through to the quarter final of the Sussex Senior Cup. They were indebted to heroic keeper George Bentley for saving two penalties, in the dramatic denouement. High flying Littlehampton from the Southern Combination Division One worried their much-changed, far more senior, but somewhat struggling visitors and, to an impartial viewer, were somewhat unfortunate to be eliminated after leading 1-0 until a minute short of normal time. Both sides had early scoring chances, after which Littlehampton looked dangerous when goal-bound header was saved and Dan Hegarty’s attempt to put away the rebound was blocked. Littlehampton were doing most of the pressing, yet another opportunity went begging when Gaskin headed past the post. Bookings for strong challenges followed, and Harris was unable to capitalise from free-kicks. Then, five minutes ahead of the break, the hosts went in front from a corner, poor marking enabling Swain to smashed the ball beyond Bentley. Harris was off target with an attempt to level things up on the stroke of half-time, leaving Littlehampton with a one goal lead at the turnaround. Resuming, the hosts continued to enjoy the better of things, with Gaskin firing into the side-netting immediately after the restart. New Horsham signing Tauren Roberts was denied when his shot was deflected behind for a corner, sparking a period of Horsham pressure that saw Kelly drive forward with a promising run marred only by a wasteful finish, and a Charman header well saved by Binfield. After

an unconverted corner, the Hornets made further substitutions with just a quarter of an hour left. Shelley spurned a great chance at getting Horsham back on terms when, unmarked, he was unable to hit the target from a corner while, at the other end, Gaskin tested Bentley with a dipping half volley. Frustration spawned more yellow cards in the final ten minutes, played almost entirely in the home half. Dawson’s follow-up was thwarted, after a Brivio shot was blocked, before Binfield’s goal was finally breached with just a minute of regular time remaining, Kelly slotting the ball through in a neat finish to equalise. Chris Smith might have won the tie a minute later but Binfield parried and, despite plenty of late pressure, the home goal remained intact. Entering extra time Horsham remained on the front foot, Kelly’s long range effort going straight to Binfield and Mills’ attempt hitting both posts before being cleared. Bentley was called back into action, but a dipping strike by Russell just cleared the crossbar, Littlehampton remaining a goalscoring threat. Dawson’s foray was swatted away by the ‘keeper but the last action of the first half of extra-time ended in a scare for the Hornets when McKernan crept in, but just evaded the goal. The final fifteen minutes belonged to the Hornets, with Charman, Mills, Kelly and Smith all unsuccessfully testing Binfield, heralding the Hornets’ first penalty shootout in almost eight years. Craig Nagle drew first blood for the hosts, but Mills levelled things up. Bentley then guessed the right way to keep out McKernan’s powerful attempt and Smith put the Hornets in the driving seat when his spot-kick crashed into the net off the underside of the crossbar. Goalscorer Swain was next to be denied, Bentley moving correctly again, and, after O’Sullivan and Hand had each netted in turn, it was left to Dawson to strike the winning blow to send Horsham through to the last eight.

Horsham go third after Folkestone compete double

Saturday December 7 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Folkestone Invicta 2-1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Having started the season brilliantly, Horsham slipped to third after defeat in the top of the table clash at Folkestone’s Cheriton Road ground with their first back to back defeat for 15 months. Horsham started brightly, but paid the penalty for missed chances. In the opening minutes Kieran Pamment clipped a low effort wide, across the face of goal, but Horsham blew what should have been the perfect start three minutes later, when home keeper Harry Newcombe kicked the ball straight to Hornets’ Chris Smith, only for the striker to round Newcombe and drag his shot wide of the empty goal - a stunning miss. Invicta’s

‘keeper again looked suspect, fumbling a corner, the ball falling to Jack Brivio, whose swipe at goal was cleared from the line. Then, on 17 minutes, Invicta created their first shot, but direct to Horsham keeper George Bentley, followed by a weak, low effort by Jerson Dos Santos. Horsham soon thought they had scored, but Smith was adjudged offside. Folkestone were then found wanting, Jackson blasting over ahead of the same player being unable to beat Bentley in a one on one situation, the score remaining goal-less at the break. The first of two Folkestone penalties was awarded early in the second half, but continuing his heroics of saving spot kicks from the Littlehampton cup tie, Bentley dived low to his right to negate Dos Santos’ attempt, notching up a hat trick of penalty denials in the process. But, the subsequent spot kick, resulting from a clumsy lunge, was converted by Jackson, giving

Folkestone the lead. The hosts then pressed to double their advantage, but Bentley averted danger before a diving header eluded the goal. Folkestone, though, did soon score again, courtesy of Joe Shelly’s own goal as he sought to repel an attack. However, Horsham promptly pegged back the arrears when club legend Gary Charman rolled back the years, raising the Hornets’ hopes ten minutes from time end, heading in his 167th goal for the club. Horsham threw everything into attack, but a Folkestone breakaway threatened to bury the game, yet Jackson was off target. Dos Santos then hit the post, the game ending after a barrage of Horsham corners in injury time, Brivio heading inches over the bar in the final minute. Horsham will look to return to winning ways on Saturday when they welcome eighth-placed East Thurrock United.

YMCA take three well deserved points from local derby Saturday December 7 - Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3-2 Alfold Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After back to back defeats Horsham YMCA secured a much needed win with a spirited second half display in an entertaining, close fought game against Surrey neighbours Alfold last Saturday. But, Alfold started positively, bringing out a full length save from Aaron Jeal, before a YM corner was headed just wide. Then, in the 21st minute, YM took the lead, Jack Ryder latching onto Jack Frankland’s cross. Corners followed at either end before YM pressure put Tony Nwachukwu through, but his attempt was just a little too aerial. Alfold, though, were also pushing, Jeal rushing out to clear from the path of an encroaching forward, George Cousins then blazing over, and Jack Nourse getting into a one on one with Jeal out of position,

only to fire harmlessly wide. A YM corner followed, but when action immediately switched to the other end, Joao Tiago Andrade equalised two minutes from half time. Luke Gedling’s low strike threatened to restore YM’s lead, Alfold keeper Luis Corria saving by the post, and there was still time for the visitors to worry YM, both sides being slightly relieved to go into the break on level pegging. The second half began with YM Captain Ash Dugdale putting another Gedling set piece just over, ahead of a home corner. Alfold then had two shots, both adrift, before YM hit the bar. Cousins was thwarted by a high Jeal catch and, in end to end play, Nwachukwu was deprived of the ball by a defender dashing back to clear with Corria out of his goal. With competitiveness generating five second half yellow cards, frenetic attacks at either end saw Alfold scorch the bar and Matt Daniel surge through to earn a corner, but it was the visitors who retook the lead on the half hour mark, heading in a

cross from near the corner flag. YM were looking a little short up front, however Adam Hunt promptly lobbed the onrushing Corria from 30 yards to draw YM level, and, in a brief golden interlude, Guy Harding played the ball to Matt Daniel to head in what turned out to be the winner. But, Alfold did not give up without a fight, Corria coming up to the half way line as they threw everything into attack cup tie style. In the edgy final minutes the ball evaded both goalmouths and a last ditch Alfold corner was kept out. YM’s Dave Brown, still recovering from injury and now in YM’s coaching team, told the District Post: “The boys trained hard this week and we really wanted to win this local derby. Hopefully this will be a turning point for us.” On Saturday YM travel to play 12th- placed Little Common, to whom they lost 4-1 at Gorings Mead on the first Saturday of the season. Meanwhile, YM, having played more games (18) than any other side except Broadbridge Heath, are 10th.

A tough afternoon at Motspur Park

Photo courtesy of the Horshm Rugby Club

LONDON 1 SOUTH Saturday 7th December 2019 KCS Old Boys 43-19 Horsham Rugby Richard Ordidge Despite sitting one place above KCS Old Boys in the league table at the start of play the visitors knew that their depleted side with eight positional changes from last week’s starting lineup would be facing a tough afternoon at Motspur Park which proved to be the case in losing 43-19. KCS Old Boys swept all before them last season in winning London 2 South West with a 100% record scoring a four try bonus point in every game, and if they continue to field this quality set of three quarters will enjoy another successful campaign. Horsham have now suffered five successive defeats and will need to return to the kind of form

they were displaying at the start of the season otherwise they risk being sucked into a relegation dogfight. KCS Old Boys raced into a 19-0 lead at half-time with tries from George Taylor, Brodie Wilson and James Houstoun two of which were converted by Gareth Stoppani. Houston added his second following a charge down from the kick off, then on 51 minutes the Green and Whites troubled the scoreboard for the first time when Jordan Bell won the race to touch down a nudge through the KCS Old Boys backline by Frankie Smith. 26-5. Following an intercept Theo Alexis scored and when on 58 minutes Taylor completed his brace against the run of play, Horsham were looking down the barrel at 40-5. The introduction of Josh Earle and Ian Paku seemed to inject a greater energy into Horsham’s

play. Good multi-phase play saw the ball eventually reach Christian Squire to score which was converted by Smith, and then Paku scored a stunning solo try beating several defenders along the way to bring a measure of respectability before Stoppani closed out the game with a penalty. A disappointed Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said after the game, “Another below par performance from us today which is frustrating. We started brightly but when we didn’t make headway immediately we started to go off plan and kick the ball away to a dangerous set of backs. We did not execute our Lineout effectively today, particularly in the opposition 22m where 4 lineout opportunities were missed. We finally woke up after 65 minutes when playing a little tighter and looking after the ball better we sucked in defenders creating space for a couple of good tries, but it was too little too late. Rich Tredgett was voted man of the match by KCS and other notable performances came from Mike Watts who showed fight throughout, and youngsters Ian Paku and Josh Earle when they took the field. We have much to work on if we are to arrest the current losing streak going into the Christmas break over the next two weeks starting with an interesting match at home to London Cornish where a large crowd is expected.” Horsham: Watts; Sudder (Condon), Ordidge, Bell J, Squire; Smith F, Linfield; Bell N (Cass), Preston, Barber (Earle); Goward, Tredgett; Cass, Smith J, Redmayne

Lapses condemn Horsham after playing well Saturday December 7 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham Men’s 1st XI 1-4 Canterbury 2 Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter This was another frustrating game for Horsham – as happened last week, they looked just as good as the opposition and created opportunities earning plenty of short corners, but could not convert. And, again, lapses in concentration, resulting in the ball being given away too easily, proved fatal, Canterbury scoring three times in about as many minutes to kill the game. Horsham started well, enjoying the lion’s share of possession, with a trio of short corners, putting Canterbury under pressure, but to no avail. The visitors then blazed over from a set piece before another Horsham short came and went, the deadlock continuing almost until the half hour mark, when a Kentish attack was pushed out, only to be smashed back in to open the scoring. Galvanised, Canterbury attacked strongly, Horsham keeper Richard Hancock palming away a strike for a corner, from which the lead was doubled. Then, Canterbury banged in another short to go 3-0 up with half time beckoning, a most disappointing scoreline after Horsham had been on top for much of the first half. There was still just

time for two more set pieces, which although kept out, gave Horsham very much to do following the restart The game resumed with Horsham having plenty of ball and after a Canterbury breakaway, terminating in a mile wide one on one shot, Horsham Player Coach Andy Blood saw his strong strike well saved – until, against the run of play, Canterbury burst through and, following an initial save, backhanded the ball in, putting Horsham four nil in arrears. To their credit Horsham kept their heads up, Andy MacDonald unleashing a thunderbolt without success. Canterbury, though, were far from complacent and, after a close call was cleared from the line, they had a shocking close range miss, Joey Humphreys responding for Horsham with a trademark solo run, and although this was fruitless, as was another promising home attack, a clean Zak Chinn strike provided a consolation goal for Horsham. Horsham go into the Christmas and New Year break with much on their mind – bottom of the table with just 16 goals scored and 61 conceded, the worst stats in the table. And, there is no immediate sign of it getting any easier – the league programme restarting on Saturday January 11 with a trip to current leaders Wimbledon, who have let in just 14 goals from their 11 games, having won 8 encounters.

Dean Wheeler crowned first Horsham FC winner

Eighteen players of varying abilities took to the oche to compete in the inaugural Horsham Football Club Darts Championship, and Dean Wheeler was delighted to carry off the title after beating Ian Burlinson 2-0 in the final. The tournament was held immediately after the Hornets’ home game against Margate,

and pre-tournament favourite Wheeler took out a 104-finish, the highest checkout of the day, to book his place in the final. His fellow finalist, Burlinson, was a last-minute replacement, yet he charged through the tournament with his high scoring and clinical doublehitting. However he could do nothing as Wheeler comfortably took home first prize.

The Football Club were very pleased to stage such a successful event and promised that the tournament will return next year even bigger and better and will be announcing details in due course. Meanwhile the full results were Preliminary Round (Best of three legs, 301): Howard Neal 0-2 Colin Rogers First Round (Best of three legs, 401): Dean Wheeler 2-0 Jack Everley Alex Rogers 1-2 Colin Rogers Neil Clarke 2-1 Chris Holmes Beth Eggleden 2-0 Pete Tanner Ian Burlinson BYE – Neil Axon Alan Arnold 2-0 Heinz Arthur Andy Meadus 2-1 Al Morris Darren Jestico 0-2 Matt Jones Quarter Finals (Best of three legs, 301): Dean Wheeler 2-0 Colin Rogers Neil Clarke 0-2 Beth Eggleden Ian Burlinson 2-0 Alan Arnold Andy Meadus 2-1 Matt Jones Semi Finals (Best of three legs, 301): Dean Wheeler 2-1 Beth Eggleden Ian Burlinson 2-0 Andy Meadus Final (Best of three legs, 401): Dean Wheeler 2-0 Ian Burlinson

Horsham settle for a draw in Suffolk Saturday December 7 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Ipswich Ladies 0-0 Horsham Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter

A mixture of injuries and non availability restricted Horsham to a squad of 12, plus Coach Suzy Clapp – Lizzy Cook took to the field with two broken fingers and Laura Coggins with a pulled hamstring, while Vicky Doyle, Tazzy Williams and Rosie Firth were all unable to play, so it was a case of having to make do and mend. Horsham had beaten Ipswich 3-1 in the corresponding home fixture earlier in the season, but despite Ipswich’s basement position with nine straight losses prior to this game, the Suffolk hosts defended well, keeping Horsham at bay throughout, with neither side be-

ing able to break the deadlock and get onto the score sheet. Ipswich had early chances, but Horsham keeper Hannah Jackson was up to the challenge, before Horsham turned the tables, putting pressure on the home defence. Late in the game Horsham had a run of short corners, forcing a high stick save by Ipswich keeper Ali Barham, the game ending goal-less. Fran Crossley told the District Post: “We were in control of the game, but just couldn’t get through their defence – it was really disappointing to draw, we are, though, happy as we go into the Christmas and New Year break.” The Ladies resume their league programme on February 1st, when they welcome Wimbledon 2s to Christ’s Hospital for a 14.00 push back. Meanwhile, the team will be playing in the annual indoor tournament with the possibility of a Sussex Cup Tie in the interim
