The true meaning of Christmas Horsham Churches Together annual Christmas Event in Horsham’s Carfax Hundreds of children and families experienced the true meaning of Christmas in Horsham’s town centre last Saturday at Horsham Churches Together’s free Christmas Event. The Children’s Musical Nativity took place at the Carfax Bandstand led by Little Notes. Mark and Lou Bradbury and band orchestrated a lively retelling of the Nativity story. Children and families watched and real nativity characters acted to form a Nativity tableau in front of the Carfax Bandstand. The donkey played a starring role, as did the pantomime camel! Children and families then started off on the Nativity Trail determined to have their Passports stamped at each of the Nativity Trail locations. The Carfax Amphitheatre hosted the very popular donkey from Dashing Donkeys, along with the Bethlehem backdrop. The shepherds were handing out candy canes in the Forum alongside their toy sheep. At the Bishopric, children collected Happy Birthday Jesus balloons and saw a manger containing baby Jesus. Three wise men gave out chocolate coins at the Living Room in Swan Walk.

Continued from front page To mirror the journey taken by the children, they were all given a book called ‘The Very Greatest Journey’ published by The Bible Society, and a wooden Christmas tree hanging decoration of the Nativity scene as a prize for completing the trail. While the Trail was taking place,

spectators enjoyed the Christmas Concert on the Carfax Bandstand, listening to the songs from Living Faith Assembly, Liezel RuthvenBrink from Opera Bel Canto London and singers from Belmont School, a saxophone group, St Mary’s Church Choir, Horsham Rock Choir and Slinfold Concert Band. Hundreds of people then

joined in with the town’s Carol Service at the Carfax Bandstand, with Pastor Clive Urquhart giving a Christmas message. Horsham Churches Together is very grateful to the many people who took part in Saturday’s Christmas Event. Thank you also to partners who supported the event: Coden Events (Horsham General Market), Food Rocks (Horsham Markets), Dashing Donkeys, High Gain Event Services, Horsham District Council,

Final weekend of the John Lewis 2019 Christmas Music & Community Event

As Christmas gets ever closer a busy period of activity based around Music and the Community, organised by John Lewis Horsham, reaches its final weekend. This week sees performances from the Horsham Matters Choir, a second visit from the

Slinfold Concert Band and there promises to be some fun on Friday afternoon as some of the cast of the Peter Pan Panto visit. Choirs from “Little Notes” and “Big Notes” have performed along with performances from Stagecoach, The Rock Choir. Last Wednesday saw 4 local pri-

mary schools, St Andrews in Nuthurst, Leechpool, Greenway and Heron Way, perform in our charity event. This years event was raising money for the Chestnut Tree Hospice. This weekend saw the Slinfold Concert Band and The Horsham Borough Band performing in the main atrium.

In addition members of Waitrose and John Lewis were involved in a joint initiative with FareShare to host Christmas dinners for vulnerable people. Waitrose and John Lewis invited over 1000 people across the country to enjoy a festive feast as part of its campaign to bring people together this Christmas.

There has also been some “festive” support for local businesses taking part in the Christmas Shop windows competition. Members of the VM team provided a video for independent retailers with window dressing tips and John Lewis is acting as one of the judges this year.

Meals on Wheels service delivers festive A Flock of Sparrows – celebrating the art of Dr Geoffrey Sparrow cheer to customers this Christmas People across West Sussex will enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner and some yuletide cheer thanks to the county council Meals on Wheels service. A team of 16 staff will be working come rain, shine or even snow on Christmas Day to ensure people can get their choice of festive fare. The service, which is run by apetito, operates 365 days of the year and expects to deliver approximately 300 hot Christmas lunches to many vulnerable people who live on their own. Amanda Jupp, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, joined apetito delivery driver Mark Hardy on his round in Chichester recently when she met customers, including 94-year-old Joan Day. Mrs Day said: “The food is lovely, and the people are jolly and very polite. They are always so nice and happy.” Amanda said: “I’m extremely proud of our Meals on Wheels team, who provide a vital service to their customers. “They are out every day of the year, whatever the weather, to make sure they deliver hot meals to

a number of our older residents. “Some people do not have any friends or family popping in during the festivities and our delivery drivers may be the only visitors they get on Christmas Day. It emphasizes how the service provides more than just a meal to people. It also offers a friendly face, some welcome company as well as someone to keep an eye out for them.” Customers on Christmas Day this year will have a choice of a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings, a steak and red wine casserole or a vegetarian option, followed by Christmas pudding or trifle. Each customer will also receive a mince pie to enjoy. Sarah Ayres, apetito’s West Sussex Service Manager, said: “The team do a fantastic job throughout the year in all weathers and Christmas Day is no exception. We are never short of drivers who want to bring some Christmas cheer into the homes of our customers in the form of Christmas dinner and a friendly chat. In many cases, our drivers visit will be the only contact the customer has on this special day. “I firmly believe we are making a

real difference in West Sussex serving our nutritious meals to the elderly and most vulnerable. The key focus in keeping people healthier and in their own homes where they want to be. “It’s also reassuring for many family members and next-of kin that we are calling daily delivering not just a hot nutritious meal but very importantly a safe and well check.” Meals on Wheels enables many older, disabled and housebound people to remain independent in their own homes. The service is also there as support at times of particular need, for example for someone returning home from hospital. Meals can be ordered for the number of days required, and there is no obligation to sign up for a certain period. For more information email westsussex.office@apetito.co.uk or call 01903 718893. A true Edwardian, Dr Geoffrey Sparrow came to Horsham 100 years ago after serving with distinction in the First World War. For the next fifty years, he portrayed the countryside and town, illustrating the scenes of everyday life with wit and charm, revealing a master of the caricature, be it man or beast. Now marking fifty years since his death, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery is hosting a “Flock of Sparrows”, a major retrospective of a comic genius. A doctor who could write “Harley Street is an address not a medical qualification”, illustrate the chaos of 1950s West Street with echoes of Hogarth and Rowlandson, the horse out-foxing the rider and be awarded the Military Cross in both World War I and World War II, whilst serving the community, is worthy of celebration. This exhibition focuses on his artistic life. Dr Geoffrey Sparrow was born on13th July 1887 without any public ceremony or celebration. He grew up in a Devonshire home surrounded by sporting books, prints and illustrations. He went into medicine as it was one of the professions, which in those days, was counted as just about acceptable next to army, law or the church. (All of the latter he had strong opinions about). After studying medicine at Cambridge and Barts, he served as a doctor in the Great War with distinction. An account of his experiences was published in a book he co-wrote -‘On Four Fronts with the Royal Naval Division’. The book is noted not only for its accuracy and descriptive accounts of warfare, but also for his illustrations. In 1919 he moved to Horsham where he joined

a local medical practice. Dr Sparrow lived for three things – hunting, art and medicine. It was not the ‘kill’ but the camaraderie of the hunt that he enjoyed, which so obviously comes out in the pictures on display. Some people today might suggest these pictures glorify hunting. What they glorify is not the actual killing of animals but the horse, hound and sportsman working together within the Sussex landscape. His works portray the foibles and humour that are generated when groups of people get together, be they councillors, huntsmen etc. His humour is in a long tradition of British artistic caricaturists e.g. Dr Syntax Tours by Rowlandson and John Leech. Drawn from the Museum’s collections, built up over the last 30 years, the exhibition has been supplemented by loans from members of the public who also enjoy his creativity, be it in watercolour, pencil, or burin as he transformed his rapid sketch into an engraving, or later an etching. A Flock of Sparrows is the culmination of Horsham Museum and Art Gallery’s contribution to Horsham District’s Year of Culture. Over the year, the Museum has celebrated the artistic creativity and heritage of the District and this exhibition blends the two elements together, to portray a culture out of which we still see echoes today, but is changing as new artists explore the culture with fresh eyes. The Flock will be nesting at the Museum on 21st December, and flying away on 7th March 2020. Horsham Museum is open 10-5pm Monday-Saturday, excluding public holidays. Free admission. www. horshammuseum.org

Horsham District Council’s Neighbourhood Wardens for Billingshurst, Barry Faust and Glyn Thomas, recently attended the Sussex Police and Crime Commission offices in Lewes for an event to celebrate a recent funding initiative for Billingshurst. The Police and Crime Commission’s Safer in Sussex Fund is available for organisations to bid for ,and Barry and Glyn requested money to fund the

Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s Albion in the Community Group to run weekly football sessions throughout the summer in Billingshurst. The football sessions were intended as diversionary activities to combat low level anti-social behaviour in Billingshurst in the school holidays. The sessions were open to both boys and girls. The wardens were initially awarded £300 to cover the cost of the sessions and have since re-

ceived a further £700 which will enable the sessions to take place in future school holidays, as well as providing a small budget for sporting equipment as required. Neighbourhood Wardens Barry and Glyn met the Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne, at the event and told her more about the sessions which were very popular and well attended by young people in Billingshurst.

West Sussex residents urged to have their say on ‘transformational’ 30-year transport strategy with sustainability at its heart Investment could unlock massive growth, more than doubling the South East’s economy and supporting half a million new jobs by 2050 Strategy sets out bold and compelling future that is better for people, better for business and better for the planet Prioritising greater investment in public transport is the only feasible way to reduce congestion, cut emissions and boost air quality in the long term People and businesses in West Sussex are being urged to have their say on a proposed 30-year transport strategy for the South East which aims to improve journeys, boost the economy and protect the environment. The strategy outlines how, with the right investment in our region’s transport network, the South East’s economy will more than double by 2050 to between £450bn and £500bn per year – creating an additional 500,000 jobs, boosting quality of life and access to opportunities for all and helping cut the South East’s carbon emissions to net-zero. It has been produced by Transport for the South East, a unique partnership bringing together local authorities, business leaders and transport organisations to speak with one voice on our region’s transport priorities. A major focus of the strategy is reducing the region’s reliance on private cars to reduce congestion,

cut carbon emissions and improve air quality. Today, cars account for 70% of all journeys in the South East compared to just 4% by rail and 5% by bus. It also highlights how better transport links can support economic growth around our key international gateways, such as Gatwick Airport, which are vital to the local, regional and national economy. To do this, the strategy sets out a 30-year framework to guide decisions about where, when and how money is invested in the South East’s transport network, along with a range of schemes and initiatives to make sustainable travel easier and more attractive to people and businesses. These could include better and faster rail journeys, improved links to ports and airports, a real-terms freeze on rail fares, cheaper off-peak fares and extra funding to protect and enhance vital bus services. West Sussex County Council is represented on Transport for the South East’s board by Roger Elkins, council Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure. Roger said: “Residents and businesses consistently tell us that the transport system in West Sussex needs to improve. This strategy will enable us to take a long-term, joined-up approach to future improvements and meeting the needs of changes in technology and lifestyles. Please have your say to ensure it will meet the needs of the West Sussex community.”

The draft transport strategy identifies priorities for future investment by looking at the challenges people and businesses will face in moving around the region and the opportunities these present to support sustainable economic growth. These include a range specific schemes as well as wider policies and initiatives. For example, the strategy argues for greater use of new and emerging technology such as connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) to boost connectivity. It makes the case for policy changes to enable more joined up planning, particularly between transport and housing, to help reduce the need to travel and build more sustainable communities. And the strategy also recognises that tough decisions will need to be made about how, not if, we manage demand on the busiest parts of our transport networks. The final transport strategy is due for publication in April 2020, with a strategic investment plan planned for publication in 2021. This will provide a prioritised, costed and deliverable list of schemes, initiatives and policies to start turning the South East’s vision into reality. Have your say To read the draft transport strategy and take part in the consultation, go to tfse.org.uk/ transport-strategy. The deadline for responses is Friday, 10 January 2020.

Drusillas Zookeepers make sure their animals don’t gain any extra Christmas pounds!

As the nation starts thinking about their festive food shopping and preparing a feast for their families, zookeepers at Drusillas

Park are writing up the shopping list for a much healthier Christmas dinner. Whilst we are all tucking into

our Christmas dinners and stuffing our faces with all manner of naughty treats, Zookeepers at Drusillas will be prepping moun-

tains of fresh veg and serving up the healthiest of Christmas dinners. Drusillas Head Keeper, Sophie Leadbitter, said: “Diets tend to go out of the window at Christmas and everyone tucks into a few more treats that normal, which I think absolutely everyone is guilty of! But it’s important that our animals don’t follow the same trend.” “Being overweight is dangerous for animals and feeding them the wrong foods can affect their health just as badly as it does ours. All of the animals at Drusillas follow very careful measured and monitored diets to ensure they are at their optimum weight and peak physical fitness at all times. We work around the clock to ensure our animals are happy and healthy; and diet and nutrition sit at the core of this.” “Obese animals can face consequences such as diabetes, osteoarthritis, kidney disease, cancer, high blood pressure, heart and respiratory disease and much more. It is really important that we look after our animals’ diets in the same way we do our own. There are lots of pet owners out

there who adore their animals, so we are just highlighting the importance of monitoring their diet and making sure that if we are being a bit more lax with our diets, we aren’t doing the same to our animals. The excuse ‘oh but it’s Christmas’ simply doesn’t apply to animals.” Drusillas Zookeeper’s Christmas shopping list currently includes: 36kg beetroot, 18kg broccoli, 30kg large carrots, 6 large cauliflower, 12 cabbages, 12 bunches celery, 15kg swiss chard, 15kg chicory, 15kg courgettes, 42 cumbers, 15kg curly kale, 50 kg fine green beans, 15 kg leeks, 15kg pak choi, 36 bunches of spring onions, 20kg of sweet potato and much more! Drusillas Head Keeper, Sophie Leadbitter, said: “Now if that’s not a healthy list of Christmas treats I don’t know what is! Our animals will love the feast of fresh veg, for them this will be an ideal Christmas menu.” Located just off the A27 in Alfriston, Drusillas Park is open from 10am daily. The Capitol have confirmed there will be a special relaxed performance of their fantastic family pantomime, Peter Pan on Thursday 2 January at 6pm. The immortal tale of the boy who wouldn’t grow up has been given a brand new pantomime treatment with an injection of pop and musical theatre songs, colourful sets and costumes, corny and clever gags and thoroughly family friendly entertainment.

This particular performance will be suitable for children/ adults/families who would enjoy a quieter show, adapted to their needs with less special effects, softer sound and the house lights left up. A more informal atmosphere will give families the chance to move around and talk. This performance is intended specifically to be accepting and sensitive to those who may benefit from a relaxed environment, including

(but not limited to) those with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, individuals with sensory or communication disorders or learning disabilities. A BSL interpreter will be at this performance for our Deaf or Hearing Impaired audience members. FREE tickets for Carers are available for this performance through their Assisted Access Scheme. Further details of this scheme are available from The Capitol Box Office on 01403-

750220. 2019 marks the 90th Anniversary that JM Barrie gifted the rights to Great Ormond Street Hospital and The Capitol will be organising bucket collections after every performance with the donations going to the Charity. Tickets for this awfully big adventure, sponsored by Brock Taylor, Horsham Bedding Centre and The West Sussex County Times are on sale now online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com or via the Box Office.

Questions to ask when selling your home Selling your home is a huge decision and not one to be taken lightly. The financial implications are substantial and it could be a stressful experience. There are lots of things to consider, not least which estate agent to help you through process. Here are 5 questions you should ask your estate agent when deciding to sell your home...

1. What will you charge? There’s never been more choice when choosing an estate agent to sell your home. From traditional high street agents, to online services and hybrids, knowing which is best can be a difficult decision. Remember to ask if the fee is all-inclusive and whether it is paid upfront or at the end of the process.

2. How long am I tied in for? Before signing on the dotted line, establish how long you will be tied to their contract. Most agents will stipulate that your property remains with them as a sole agency for a number of weeks. Once that initial period is up, if your property hasn’t been sold you can change agents or market with more than one agent.

3. What asking price should I set?

Farhalls Crescent – For Sale £585,000 Offering all the space a growing family could need, this bright and spacious four bedroom detached house is located in a popular residential area only a few minutes’ walk from Littlehaven station.

The beauty of traditional high street agents is the knowledge they have regarding the local market. While the asking price decision is ultimately yours, having the full picture from a well informed and knowledgeable agent can really help.

4. Is my property ready to be sold? Getting your agent’s opinion on your property and its condition is a great way to prepare for the marketing process. The agent should know the kind of decor that is appealing to buyers in your area and be able to suggest improvements to make it appeal to more buyers.

5. Is it the best time to sell a house in the UK?

The property has been expertly extended to create a large main living room with adjoining dining area both giving direct access to the secluded rear garden. The stunning refitted kitchen has been finished to an exceptional standard, with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and ample worktop space. Upstairs you will find the large family bathroom, an en-suite shower room and all the bedrooms are complemented by fitted wardrobes.

play. Although the property has already been extended there is potential for further development, subject to planning permission. Call us on 01403 248222 to arrange your viewing of this beautifully presented home.

There are good and not-so-good times to sell your home. Spring, Summer, Autumn all have different positives and negatives so you should consider your agent’s knowledge of the market conditions before deciding to sell. Horsham Cricket Club development update

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Horsham Cricket Club’s recent well-attended AGM, further action was outlined aimed at restoring the Club to its pre-eminent position in Sussex cricket and beyond, in particular gaining first team promotion back into the Sussex Premier League. Michael Thornely – who had such an excellent season with the bat this year – was reappointed as 1st XI Captain, while Jonny Whiting, recovering from his serious injury while playing

rugby, will continue as 2nd XI skipper. Simon Hughes will lead the thirds, Graham Cheesman the Thursday team and Hannah Phelps, the Ladies. Former top Horsham batsman Andy Beer will resume his coaching role and the team Vice Captains will combine to agree weekly team selection, with Ed Clark taking over from Bob Daisley as the Club’s League Representative. Meanwhile, following the appointment of a new contract groundsman, Richard Marshall remains as Chairman, with fellow club stalwarts Barry Peay carrying on as President, and

Horsham Parafix Sussex Senior Cup Quarter Final News Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

At the recently completed draw at the Sussex FA Head Quarters, the Hornets were drawn away in the quarter final against Worthing, currently third – one place below Horsham – in the The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division. With the date awaiting confirmation, the tie will be played on

or before Wednesday January 15th. The two sides meet in the league, again at the coast, on Boxing Day. Meanwhile, in the other quarter finals, Peacehaven & Telscombe will play Lewes, Crawley will compete against Eastbourne Borough, while Bognor Regis Town will come up against either Brighton & Hove Albion Under 23s or Burgess Hill Town.

Colin Mitcham as Treasurer. New Sussex first team scorer, Graham Irwin, will again fulfil that role for the Horsham First XI as far as his Sussex commitments allow. Richard Marshall told the District Post: “We’re in touch with all of our existing players, who, of course, we’re keen to retain and now that the Captains are in place for next season we’ll be considering the possibility of an overseas player and pursuing some recruitment opportunities, we’re already finalising a major signing and have a few others on our radar. Our home grown professionals, Will Beer,

Tom Haines and Tom Clark will be playing for us when they are not required by Sussex and its great to see Tom Clark doing so well for England Under 19s in the Caribbean.” New father Michael Thornely added: “Plenty of good things are happening at the Club, and with our new communication system its all positive and we’re all really looking forward to the forthcoming season!” In addition to the Horsham sides’ league fixtures - with the programme expected to be announced in the New Year - Sussex will be returning in August and there will be the customary wide

range of representative games. There are two grounds at Horsham Cricket Club’s picturesque family friendly HQ, with three senior sides, Women’s league cricket, a social Thursday X1 and playing opportunities for boys and girls from Under 8 to U19 age groups, with great development potential for young players. And, as the district is fast growing, the Club will be delighted to hear from any cricketers who have moved into the locality and are looking for a new club: edclark2010@gmail.com - Horsham Cricket Club, Cricketfield Road, RH12 1TE – Horsham 254628

Horsham YMCA undone in East Sussex Saturday December 14 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Little Common 2-1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On a heavy pitch and in a strong wind at Pear Tree Lane, Bexhill-on-Sea, YM clocked up their fourth defeat in five matches in the league and cup, while Little Common extended their unbeaten home run to three matches. The Commoners began brightly, pressing at every opportunity and allowing YM little time on the ball. And, it was the hosts who carved out the first opportunity of the match in the tenth minute when Curran’s through ball found its way to Lewis Hole twelve yards from goal, but his powerful drive was well par-

ried by YM keeper Aaron Jeal. YM should then have taken the lead themselves when a rare defensive slip facilitated an attack, but the strike went wide. Curran then saw his

The hosts saw out the final ten minutes relatively comfortably to complete a league double over YM blast from the edge of the area whistle past the post before YM had a goal disallowed just before half time for a push on returning home keeper Matt Cruttwell, the score remaining goal-less at the break. YM had the first opportunity of the second half with an effort flashing across the goal, before James Hull’s first time

volley failed to trouble Jeal at the other end. And, it was YM who opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, Guy Harding heading in a corner from close quarters. The Commoners, though, responded positively, seeking early retribution and the equaliser arrived ten minutes later when Sam Ellis drove into the area, pulling back the ball for Hole to slot home. Six minutes later, Little Common took the lead when the hardworking Hull’s ball across the area just evaded Hole, but Kian Moynes was on hand to score at the second attempt after seeing his initial effort saved. The hosts saw out the final ten minutes relatively comfortably to complete a league double over YM, who are now 12th in the table, one place below Little Common. YM take to the road again this Saturday to visit seventh-placed Crawley Down Gatwick, before, on the 28th, entertaining near neighbour Broadbridge Heath for a post Christmas local derby.

Horsham back to winning ways

LONDON 1 SOUTH Saturday 14th December 2019 Horsham 12-7 London Cornish Rugby Richard OrdidgeHorsham got back to winning ways with a hard fought 12-7 win at Coolhurst over London Cornish. Five successive defeats had seen the Green and White slip from the lofty position of fifth to tenth and hover just above the relegation zone so this victory was a much needed tonic to reverse the losing trend before it became a habit. The bulk of the losses have been against sides at the top end of the table so as the Green and Whites began to look over their shoulder, preserving daylight between sides below them such as London Cornish had begun to take on great significance. Horsham were boosted by the return of Declan Nwachukwu who scored his tenth try of the season. The game was however marred by a serious injury to a London Cornish player after 15 minutes causing the game to be switched to an adjacent pitch. A relieved Head Coach Nick Stocker said after the game: “A disjointed performance but an important win registered to break the losing streak. We started very well but the disruption caused by a worrying injury to a London Cornish player and subsequent pitch changes saw momentum lost.” Nwachukwu opened the scoring after 10 minutes following a great kick return involving Aaron Linfield, Jordan Bell and Frankie Smith which was converted by

Bell. Following the injury and the move of pitches Horsham remained in the ascendancy but try scoring opportunities, as well as a slot at goal following the award of a penalty were missed and the Green and Whites went into half time leading 7-0. Horsham were almost left to rue their inability to convert their dominance into points as

A disjointed performance but an important win registered to break the losing streak London Cornish came back in the second half to score a converted try after forcing a series of penalties to level the scores at 7-7 after 60 minutes. London Cornish then missed two penalty kicks at goal in attempt to take the lead in this tightly fought contest, and when Frankie Smith was yellow carded with ten minutes remaining the advantage was further ceded to the visitors. Horsham then broke out of defence to secure an attacking position in the corner and a powerful scrum saw a winning try following a pick-up at the base scored by Jordan Smith to win 12-7. Stocker went on to say: “On

the positive side, we offered a greater threat today compared to recent weeks but our profligacy in the opposition 22m saw us miss chances that should have put the game to bed by half time. Instead, with only one score in it going deep into the game, the potential for Cornish to grab a morale boosting score was always there. And so it proved with Cornish looking threatening in the latter stages as they pushed for a win that would have been very unlikely on their first half showing. Our set piece worked well and when we got our runners going, we looked good. Our scrum in particular was dominant throughout but did not get the rewards it deserved until the final passage of play where its dominance secured the win and because of this, we did not award an individual man of the match but instead felt the front row of Nick Bell, Ciaran Preston, Dan Cass, and Giles Barber off the bench, in particular needed recognition for a job well done. Next week we begin the return set of fixtures against old foes Beckenham. We will need to repeat some aspects of our performance today whilst ensuring we convert the opportunities created if we are to do the double over them this year. Finally, we are pleased to hear that the Cornish player was released from hospital and we wish him a speedy recovery.” Horsham: Watts (Condon); Nwachukwu, Bell J, Smith F, Squire; Notter, Linfield; Bell N, Preston, Cass (Barber); Osgood, Tredgett; Smith J, Paku (Grief), Redmayne

Broadbridge Heath pleased to end losing run Saturday December 7 Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Loxwood 1-1 Broadbridge Heath On an emotional day the teams remembered Loxwood player Suel Delgado, sadly the victim of the recent Brighton seafront murder - who last season also played for Heath’s under 23s - with a minute of applause before the game. However, the game itself will not live long in the memory with both sides low on confidence after losing runs. Heath had the better of the first half with Paulo Okoye and Jake Hull causing the home defence problems down the flanks. Hull was thwarted by a brave diving Tyler DCruz when put through by Max Howell and the keeper then dived full length to keep out Okoye’s fierce drive. Jamie Taylor had a shot blocked and was denied by a fantastic last ditch tackle when about to bury his shot from eight yards. At the other end, an excellent cross from Tom Frankland luckily evaded the onrushing Dackers. The only goal of the first half came when Jamie Wanstall broke into the box and found the net from 15 yards despite a partial block from a defender. The second half saw Loxwood gradually push Heath back without really testing Michael

Chester back in the Heath goal. Although the home side had territorial advantage it was Heath that came closest to scoring again when D’Cruz first somehow managed to push Okoye’s effort onto the post and bar and then tipped Martyn Flack’s volley over the crossbar in spectacular fashion. Then, 10 minutes from time Mark Goldson managed to wriggle past three defenders and his intercepted cross took a second deflection off Heath skipper Andy Waddingham to trickle past a wrong footed Chester. The goal galvanised the bottom of the table Magpies who went in search of a winner, but, despite applying much late pressure, Chester was not called into serious action again and the game finished honours even, a fair result overall. Heath had new signing Harry Law in midfield for a very solid debut alongside Wanstall. Sam Gallagher was also in the squad combining with Callum and Connor Jones, Mitchell Bromage and Tom Shergold. Rob Godfrey had a run out in the warm up but is not yet ready to return and Josh Tuck and Renato Carvalho are other long term injuries. Manager Steve Painter is looking to strengthen his squad further as Christmas approaches and he will be hoping that his team can build on their first point for several games.

YMCA exit Sussex Senior Cup Tuesday December 10 – Parafix Sussex Senior Challenge Cup Third Round Bognor Regis Town 3-0 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Injury hit YMCA are now left to concentrate on their league programme after being knocked out of the Sussex Senior Cup by Isthmian League upper table Premiership side Bognor Regis Town in difficult conditions at Nyewood Lane. Bognor had the majority of possession in the opening minutes, but lacked the quality to make a breakthrough. Then, against the run of play, YM had a great chance to take the lead, Tony Nwachukwu running down the line to send a brilliant ball across the box, but evading a fellow striker. With Bognor struggling to create an opportunity, YM were looking to punish them and Dean Carden inserted a great diagonal cross, but Jack Frankland’s header hit the woodwork before going harmlessly away. Bognor responded with Joe Dandy surging through to supply Victor Hensel, whose shot was blocked off the line. Seconds later Smith had the chance of the game to put Bognor ahead but his attempt was

well saved by Aaron Jeal. However, mid way through the first half, the home side went in front when Tommy Scutt’s corner was headed home by the diving Cook. YM then escaped further damage when debutant Ben Mendoza came desperately close after benefiting from a defensive lapse, only for the wind to carry the curling ball over, the score remaining 1-0 at the break. Restarting, Bognor’s Hensel, Hopkinson and Smith all linked up well with Smith looking certain to score, but he was thwarted by a last ditch challenge. Eventually, though, Bognor doubled their advantage, through the prolific Smith, a pinpoint defence-splitting pass by Hopkinson giving the striker the perfect opportunity to bury the ball, just before the hour mark. Bognor keeper Amadou Tanagra had been untroubled for most of the second half, until, unmarked in the box, YM’s Matt Daniel was unable to fire the ball home. Then, Bognor’s Smith scored his second, putting the hosts three up to cement the seasiders’ win when, in the 82nd minute, he coolly diverted a Harvey Whyte cross into the back of the net from close range. Bognor might have increased their tally, but for some impressive late saves from Jeal in the YM goal.

Horsham were pleased to get through this Velocity Trophy tie – the Isthmian League Cup – and while Whyteleafe did not look too threatening in front of goal they nevertheless gave Horsham

Broadbridge Heath return to their winning ways Saturday December 14 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 1 -0 Langney Wanderers Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Heath were looking to build on their first point in seven games at Loxwood, as seventh placed Langney Wanderers visited the Countryside Stadium. Manager Steve Painter made one change from the team that drew with Loxwood: with Max Howell unavailable, Archie Goddard came in after his debut for Horsham last week. The first half was fairly even but the visitors came closest to opening the scoring when Saunders hit the outside of Chester’s right hand post with a snap shot, the Heath keeper then getting down smartly to his left to turn away Hollobone’s drive from the edge of the box. At the other end Heath had corners and free kicks with Taylor and Hull getting in shots that did not really test Harmon in the Wanderer’s goal, neither side scoring up to half time. Painter made a tactical change at the break moving Paulo Okoye

wider and bringing Hull in behind Taylor. The Crawley loanee immediately combined well with Hull but the latter’s shot was blocked. Okoye then suffered an injury and was replaced by Cam Watts. Heath continued to push forward and Taylor drove wide unaware that Watts was available for a tap in. The former professional was then thwarted by a last ditch tackle and Hull twice got behind the visiting defence but could not beat Harmon. Despite continuing to push for a winner it looked like the Bears’ finishing was going to let them down – until, in the 89th minute, a combination of Wanstall, Hull and Taylor led to Watts being put in on goal and although Harmon got a hand to the Heath youngster’s shot, he could not keep it out and the win drought was over. After letting in far too many goals over the past few weeks, Heath have now only conceded an unlucky own goal in the last two games and Painter’s young squad will surely draw much confidence from this performance. On Saturday Heath, now 13th in the table, remain at home to welcome fourth- placed Horley Town, then, the following Saturday (28th), they visit Horsham YMCA for what is always a hard fought local derby.

a competitive game after qualifying by coming top of a strong group including last season’s FA Vase winners Chertsey Town. Well-respected Whyteleafe are currently fifth in the Isthmian South East Division and, having

beaten Horsham 5-2 in the Bostik League at Lancing 18 months ago, they are unquestionably worthy opponents. With fog swirling across from the south and in an increasingly cold chill Hornets’ Captain Jack Brivio created the first real possibility of the game with a cross from the right, which was cleared before visiting keeper Sheikh Ceesay had to dash out to quell another Horsham foray. A dipping piledriver was then impressively dealt with by George Bentley in the Horsham goal, before Harry Mills squared a ball across, without a yellow shirt to receive it. A Whyteleafe corner and free kick followed, but when the ball was immediately fed back upfield, JJ O’Sullivan put Horsham in front in the 12th minute with a cleanly taken goal. Looking to double Horsham’s lead, Taurean Roberts fired a speculative long range shot over the bar and then Alex Kelly’s opportunist effort was wide, as was Mills’ strike from the flank. Then, amid sustained Horsham pressure, Charlie Harris’ attempt was pushed off for a corner, and Kieran Lavery was unable to convert Mills’ supply. But, when action switched to the other end, the visitors earned two corners in rapid succession, half time coming with Horsham still leading 1-0

after a set piece of their own. The restart was delayed by ten minutes in the hope that the fog would clear, which it showed little sign of doing, Bentley having to pull off a diving save when the game got going again. Horsham, though, soon asserted themselves, with a corner, before Mills broke through to find the side netting from a tight angle. Another corner resulted from a Charlie Harris incursion. However, Whyteleafe were still very much in the game, Bentley having to exhibit two close reaction saves in a minute. A diving header from Horsham’s Will Miles redressed the balance, but Bentley was soon called upon to maintain Horsham’s advantage. Yet, thereafter, Horsham called the shots with two further corners, sub Lee Harding then blasting straight at Ceesay, and Harris firing just past the post. With six minutes remaining two more Horsham attacks fizzled out, until, in a final desperate roll of the dice, Ceesay’s free kick form the half way line came to nothing, heralding the final whistle. Horsham are expecting to announce an unusual international soon to be staged at their Camping World Stadium – watch the Club website for details – www. horshamfc.co.uk

Much needed win moves Horsham back up to second Saturday December 14 - The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 1-0 East Thurrock United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After back to back league defeats against two Kent sides Horsham returned to winning ways against East Thurrock United at The Camping World Stadium last Saturday, bouncing back up to second in the table, one point behind leaders Folkestone Invicta, who suffered a shock 1-3 away defeat to lowly Bowers & Pitsea. The Hornets were indebted to veteran recent returnee Gary Sharman for his match winning first half goal. But, the visitors began brightly, warming keeper George Bentley’s hands and earning a corner in the opening seconds before going on to prove stubborn opponents in the gritty encounter. Horsham, though, soon created a chance of their own, but Jack Brivio was only able to head Jerry O’ Sullivan’s threatening free kick over the bar. Thurrock immediately re-

sponded and should have taken the lead, but Horsham escaped after a defensive error had let the Essex visitors through, but well-placed Matthew Price mercifully contrived to fail to connect with Alex Clark’s cross. With the Essex visitors lookClark was ing busier, off target just beyond

the mid point of the first half, before teammates Frankie Merrifield and Danny Cossington were also adrift. However, Horsham began to be more assertive with Charlie Harris and O’Sullivan exploiting openings down Thurrock’s right wing, but their forays were successfully averted – until an O’Sullivan cross was gleefully accepted by Char-

man to volley home just after the half hour mark. And, on the cusp of half time, Charman might have doubled Horsham’s lead, only to be denied by the woodwork. Resuming, Horsham pressed for an early goal to give themselves a cushion, O’Sullivan thrusting through, but his effort was well wide. Amid restricted chances at either end, the combined talents of Brivio, Charman and Harris were thwarted by the Thurrock defence, ahead of the crossbar again denying the Hornets, O’Sullivan suffering. Then, the post rescued Thurrock once more, when Jason Ring deflected Rob O’Toole’s cross onto the upright and away. In extra time Horsham did have a golden opportunity to bury the game, yet sub Chris Smith brought out a good low save. While it may not have been pretty, Horsham were delighted to finish with three points – their first in all but a month - to reboot their quietly expressed play off aspirations. They return to league action in a double pointer against third placed Worthing at the coast on Boxing Day
