Summer finally arrived, bringing out the community in their thousands to celebrate at Horsham Sports Club for this year’s The Big Gig Festival on Saturday (22 June). What a weekend at Horsham Sports Club, as over 4000 festival goers gathered together under the sunny skies to celebrate some top tribute acts at Horsham’s happiest family music festival, The Big Gig! The gates opened at 1pm and the crowd was ready to party from the off, with Brit Pop local lads JOE90 getting everyone into the festival spirit with their seamless covers and expert sound. You’d think that Ed Sheeran had actually arrived in Horsham with second act Kieran, whose sound-a-like vocals and cheeky charm were a huge hit with the whole crowd. This year saw local contemporary choir group, Singergy, surprise the crowds with a fantastic flash mob style performance of 80’s hit ‘You’re the Voice’ followed by three sing-a-long songs on stage, which had people singing in their seats. For many, the Tribute to Wham stole the show, as hundreds of dedicated fans jumped to their feet to reminisce as Steve Mitchell (as George Michael) delivered hit after hit from the infamous duo, including Club Tropicana and Wake Me up Before You Go Go! The crowd was ready for action as evening fell and The Blunter Brothers - back by popular demand – took to the stage. Sensational local favourites The Blunter Brothers, a 10 piece funk, soul and

earth, but less easy to deliver it. The lack of safe cycling infrastructure was discussed with general agreement that considerable improvement is required, with attendant health benefits. The cost of parking fees for disabled drivers was then raised, differing opinions emerging, and the lively meeting closed after a deliberation on the excellence of Horsham Park and the need to safeguard its unique character.

russ bedford The Streeter Family and their team welcomed us on a special tour of the newly renovated Leonardslee Gardens last week. The sprawling 240 acre estate has been painstakingly restored and improved upon over the past 2 years and now is ready for the public to enjoy. After 9 years of closure the appearance of the garden should impress people from the moment they arrive. Whether it is any of the 10,000 trees that have been catalogued by head gardener Ray Abraham or the 19th Century grade 2 listed house. Leonardslee has the ability to captivate your imagination and delight your eyes. The project itself is seen as the largest garden restoration since the famous Heligan was restored in the 1990’s. A team of up to twenty gardeners have been striving for perfection since 2017 and now they are beginning to see the fruits of their labour. A vast array of colour and natural beauty will hit you as you follow the paths that lead around the grounds but that is not all, the owner of the estate, Penny Streeter OBE has ensured that the changes weren’t just botanical. showcases a variety of delightful food all of which is sourced from the estate and local farms whilst the mansion has been beautifully restored, updated and opened for classic tea. Penny says, “We are delighted to welcome visitors back to Leonardslee. They can enjoy the finest woodland gardens in England, with a stunning collection of plants from all over the world.” The work undertaken by the team saw 10 miles of pathway inspected and rebuilt, Ray told those of us in attendance that some 50 acres haven’t even been fully discovered yet, it makes you wonder what other species of plant he may find. With the vast collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias, bluebells collected from all over the world, the excitement for Ray and the team on potentially discovering even more flowers is clear, from his first visit in 1977 it has been a love affair and he states, “This garden is a paradise.” During this period of restoration the team have recorded 95 champion trees, one of which isnthe critically endangered Sicilian Fir. With only 30 left in the wild, seedlings will be taken to Kew Gardens so that the species can be preserved. Whilst maintaining the beautiful aesthetics of colourful

Spring sun brings thousands to Horsham Town for Piazza Italia The two days of Horsham’s 13th Piazza Italian festival presented the perennial blend of supercars and Italian cars, Italian market stalls and street food, themed entertainments and business promotions greatly boosted by a blast of glorious sunshine throughout. Built in to the event’s scheduling, Good Friday’s Horsham Churches Together bandstand service and Walk of Witness procession drew a massive audience who got the Carfax off to a rousing start accompanied by the surrounding bustle of the already trading market and street food stalls, all decked out in their Italian finery. Hundreds of supercars did their best to dominate proceedings but had the show stolen from them on both days by the most diminutive of all the car participants. Huge cheers and applause were reserved for the departure of the classic Fiat 500s and 30th Anniversary Italian Job Minis on Good Friday, and the sole green Fiat 126 from Horsham Barbershop on the Monday. (Britain so loves an underdog!) A brilliant bouquet of Italian bikes also set the pulses

racing as they roared through. Horsham District Year of Culture had boosted the event’s entertainments this year on Good Friday with a brilliant opera singer and roving accordion player. On Easter Monday was an Italian jazz trio and more amazing opera. Much applause accompanied all the performances with several couples seen dancing to the swinging jazz. Quite a few town businesses chose to take advantage of the event too, including Crates Local Produce, Carmela Deli, Paninos and The Horsham Cellar, all of whom were offering something special in keeping with the weekend. Horsham Time Well Spent events annual sponsors were well to the fore with Brock Taylor hosting the amazing Sporting Bears team who fielded an incredible selection of cars for charity ride outs both days raising some £5,680 for Chestnut Tree House and The Children’s Trust – an event record. Recently rebranded Impact Specialist Finance sponsored the departure gate and Cote Brasserie presented the first of five Concours d’Elegance awards for best

Horsham’s first Children’s Parade ‘fitting legacy for Year of Culture’ Over 700 school children packed the streets of Horsham on Sunday 7 July to parade through the town sporting huge effigies, models and brightly coloured costumes. The parade started at the Drill Hall in Denne Road and travelled through the historic streets, to finish in Horsham Park, as part of the town’s ever popular Funday Sunday family event.

There are calls for it to become an annual event for future generations

Local samba band, Boom Tribe, led the parade through the streets, whilst Boko Olofi took up the beat midway. Schools danced, chanted, blew whistles and even performed dance routines entertaining the hundreds of spectators who lined the streets to watch the procession, with the feedback online and in real life being overwhelmingly positive. Commenting on the spectacle, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Jonathan Chowen, said: “This was a truly joyous community event for Horsham. “It engaged with hundreds of children, parents and teachers and attracted lots of spectators. “The sheer hard work and creativity that had gone into the models and costumes was so inspiring and contributed to an amazing atmosphere. A major ‘show and tell’ for the children and a unique opportunity for them to take part in a major cultural event. “It was real triumph for the Year of Culture and all those taking part. There are calls for it to become an annual event for future generations which would be a fitting legacy

Another huge housing development proposed martin read Reporter

Horsham is certainly doing its bit to combat the housing shortage – with huge developments in Broadbridge Heath and Southwater and more in train for North Horsham, the former Novartis site, and possibly near the Boars Head pub. Yet, now a substantial development is being proposed for the 124 acre Horsham Golf & Fitness site, accessed from the Worthing Road opposite the Park & Ride facility. Horsham Golf & Fitness have just staged two exhibitions outlining their proposals in conjunction with the London-based Generator Group, who have acquired a 50% interest in the golf club. Generator describe themselves as a diverse property group and have been responsible for developments in Bristol, Felixstowe, Ipswich, Norwich and Rottingdean. The background is that in late

2015, Horsham District Council adopted the Horsham District Planning Framework (HDPF), which identified or allocated sites to deliver 16,000 homes between 2011 and 2031, and HDC is currently reviewing HDPF to identify sites for development from this year to 2036. At this stage Generator Group and Horsham Golf & Fitness are not submitting a planning application, but are instead promoting a vision via the HDPF review, by developing what they describe as “an emerging masterplan for Horsham Golf & Fitness Village”. The vision is to create a health-based community with facilities for the district, to augment the existing golf arrangements – founded in 1993 - and the new Horsham Football Club facilities with an “evolving programme of professional sports and wellbeing coaching and other participation opportunities for all ages”. In addition to up to 555 new homes, the plan, if approved, would be to retain a 9 hole golf course and a 9 hole academy course with a new clubhouse, a

matter how many VW’s you want to see, there will be something around every corner to keep your interest high. With bandstand entertainment from the Manic Mundays team, award winning DJ Brian Mole spinning his wheels of steel in the forum and local dance troupe Upbeat Dance Company providing some, as ever, energetic performances the town will be a mixture of sound, energy and passion. This years Plum Jam is supporting Storrington based charity Auntie Val’s Ability Centre, an organisation that generate work opportunities for people with disabilities. You can find Auntie Val’s in The Carfax where they will be selling a special edition Jam alongside many of their other popular sweet and savoury preserves. For the VW owners themselves this is a brilliant opportunity to showcase their pride and joy in fun, family friendly surroundings, leaving their Shoreham base on Sunday morning, cruising thrlugh, Henfield, Cowfold and Southwater before arriving in Horsham, they will be proudly lined up ready for viewing just a short while later. tives however with the District fundamentally being a Conservative stronghold they ended the election with the same number of seats as they started, 0. Brexit aside, the poor turnout may also be attributed to people just not knowing what they were voting for or simply not knowing an election was happening. Polling cards were dropped through thousands of letterboxes alomg with many candidates going door to door or dropping pamphlets through letterboxes so the reminder was there but with a distinct lack of media coverage compared to other elections it was simply just forgotten. So what were you voting for? These elections decided who runs the local authorities. In total there are 343 Councils in England of which 248 had elections held. You were voting for who represents the area you live in at Council level. Last Friday saw the count for local council elections take place and after the farce of Brexit, ex pectations were low for turnout. Last time local elections were held, the National average turnout was just 35% compared to 72% for the EU referendum. This time out those stats were mirrored in Horsham as once again the public stayed away from aiming to help change their local area. As in previous years the Conservative party managed to hold the majority of council seats, however much like the National results this was at a cost as they lost 13 seats, mainly to a resurgent Liberal Democrats who ended the count holding 13 seats. The Green party were rightfully proud of their achievements as they won their first Horsham District Council seats taking one of the two available in the ward of Steyning and Ashurst with Robert Platt elected and one of the two avaiable in Bramber, Upper Beading and Woodmancote through Michael Croker. Last Sunday the Show organisers were rewarded with a richlydeserved beautiful day and the lucky residents of Billingshurst and visitors from much further afield thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular event staged at The Recreation Ground in Billingshurst’s Lower Station Road. After music from Kieran Blackmore at the Food Court – and the iconic Battle of Britain Lancaster fly past - the hugely popular five hour Show was launched with the traditional Carnival Procession – complete with Princess and courtiers – setting off from Jengers Mead, this year’s theme being “Tell me a Story”. The Show, jointly organised by Billingshurst & District Rotary Club and the Billingshurst Scout & Guide Group, raising much-needed charity funds, was opened by local children’s author Philip Beicken. The Show was first held in 1987, but by common consent, this year’s family fun spectacular, bringing local businesses and the community together, was even better than ever. There was

residency so don’t be surprised to see them patrolling the grounds! As we took on the final part of the tour I spoke with Adam Streeter, the General Manager of the gardens and asked him about the project and his hopes, “We are really optimistic, especially

Add in dance sessions by VMA and at the maypole, a display by the Scouts and Guides, a big raffle, winner presentations and stalls aplenty featuring local crafts and community groups, and children’s story readings by Pauline Emsley, author of ‘Rag Doll Lost’ and ‘The Tear Dragon’ and the result was a breathtaking, very special day out, crammed with fun for the whole family, as confirmed by the many complimentary messages on social media – including: “A delightful Show – we had a wonderful time!” – “It was brilliant!” – “The best Show in years – thank you to all the people who worked so hard to give our village a day to remember – top drawer!” – “Wow! 568 families await housing, with 26 people placed in B&Bs. Ray Dawes, Head of the local Conservatives then told the substantial gathering that Tory strategy is to maintain and improve the quality of local life with prudent planning for the future in relation to shopping, parking, leisure, transport and services and the protection of wild life. He subsequently disputed the number of families on the waiting list, saying that homelessness had been reduced by 14%. Catherine Ross of the Green Party was also invited, but was not in attendance. Questions from the floor included: how Labour could hold Horsham District Council to book - as stated in their leaflet distributed at the venue – when they have no councillors? David Hide replied that issues are raised on the doorstep and in the press and that the quality of scrutiny of HDC needs to be a lot tighter. How could voters be sure of whom they are voting for, given the currently divisive state of British politics? Ray Dawes responded: “We are a diverse group just trying to do our best for the town.” Then came impassioned concern from the Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association regarding the former Novartis site, which had been originally reserved for educational occupation but now seems destined for housing and business use with severe doubts as to the adequacy of the transport arrangements, coupled with pollution fears. David Skipp agreed that traffic is already

There will be local elections for Horsham District Council on May 2nd and, to inform electors of the issues, the Horsham Society arranged a “Question Time” hustings in the Causeway’s Barn on Monday evening to enable voters to question candidates about their plans for the town. The open meeting was to be chaired by BBC Parliamentary Correspondent Mark D’Arcy, but he was retained at Westminster on Brexit matters, Horsham Society Chairman Malcolm Willis taking over, explaining that the Society is a non political organisation before asking the candidates to outline their plans. David Hide, Chair of Horsham Labour Party, said his top priority is affordable housing with 50% of such units in new developments while preserving our ancient woodlands and green areas, adding that it is totally unacceptable to see homeless people living on the street in our affluent area, although it was not stated whether these are local people. Next Dr David Skipp, Liberal Democrat, echoed the need for affordable housing, but with a 3540% target, saying that ring fenced money – £12.5 million – is available from developers, and stating that

The highway scheme reflects the need to remove through traffic on the existing route to the new link road and junction construction on the A24. During the West Sussex Highways construction works there is a need to close the road (to build the scheme and for workforce protection) and this is to ensure through traffic is not diverted through the village (bus access only will be maintained on Billingshurst Road). Access to Tesco will be via the A24 Farthings Hill junction.

The beer lovers of Horsham and far beyond are deeply saddened to learn of the untimely passing of one of the town’s knowledgeable and helpful purveyors of their favourite tipple - Gareth Jones of the revered Beer Essentials shop in Horsham’s East Street. His passing was announced via a poster in the window of his much loved shop last week, simply saying ‘Gareth Jones, 1962 - 2019’. Having delivered beer round the town by bicycle as a young man, Gareth went on to run the shop at the much-loved King & Barnes brewery in Horsham’s Bishopric. When the company was taken over by Hall & Woodhouse and the brewery closed, in 2001 he set up the Beer Essentials shop in the former premises of Agates, the local agricultural merchants. Gareth was in his element in his shop, rejoicing in talking beer, about which he was a true, enthusiastic expert, parting with a huge range of the product with the accompaniment of the correct bespoke glasses. Gareth also supplied racking to display the bar-

New Year’s Resolution

Horsham drug warning after two men taken to hospital in critical condition Police have warned drug takers to seek immediate medical attention if they are feeling unwell after two men were taken to hospital in a critical condition. The men were found in Horsham Park around 11pm on Saturday evening (December 28) having collapsed after taking what are believed to be illegal substances. Detective Inspector Colin Garman said: “We are trying to identify just what these two men had taken to cause them to become critically ill and want to hear from anyone with

As we start 2020, there may be some of us who are entertaining the idea of making a New Year’s resolution, such a taking out a membership to a gym, in recognition of some serious indulging and inactivity over the festive season. Local charity, West Sussex Mediation Service, who were bestowed the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year, are already planning ahead to 2020 and resolve to attract more kind people to ‘give something back’ to help sustain the charity into the future by volunteering as fundraisers. They will also need a new Treasurer at the start of their new financial year on 1st April. The charity helps people suffering conflicts in their lives find lasting solutions to their problems and specialises in resolving neighbour disputes and conflicts within families. Raising enough funds to support the free ser-

We would dearly love to hear from people able to give up a few hours to help fundraise for us, in any way they feel comfortable.

They could really make a difference. They could do it as a group of friends or work colleagues” 2020 is expected to be another challenging year for the charity, in terms of income generation. It provides its range of free mediation services across West Sussex, using over 50 volunteer mediators. It deals with over 300 referrals a year. All this is achieved on a relatively small annual budget of £90,000. Nick is hoping that his offering doesn’t match the usual failure rate for New Year resolutions of 88% - that’s according to a study by Richard Wiseman (University of Bristol) involving 3,000 people. Throughout the winter the Sussex countryside shuts down and can appear barren and lifeless but during these cold months there are still many opportunities to see some amazing wildlife. As temperatures drop in northern and eastern Europe many birds are escaping the snow and

ice and heading for the relative warmth and accessible food available in southern England. So, the birds in your back garden may be joined by others who have arrived from colder climes. You can guarantee that Redwings and Fieldfares have made a long migration to Sussex as these thrushes do not breed in the UK, but other familiar garden birds such as the Blackbird may also have flown here from Scandinavia. One of the most

memorable sights of the winter is the gathering of Starlings, a murmuration is the collective term, on Brighton’s West Pier; an incredible, hypnotic spectacle. Sussex Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves are managed to provide a refuge for birds escaping the frozen north. On the wet meadows of Amberley Wildbrooks and Waltham Brooks in West Sussex you may see Lapwings, Snipe, Wigeon and Bewick’s swans. These swans will have migrated here from arctic Russia almost 3000 km away. In East Sussex, the wader roosts at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve are impressive at this time of the year with flocks of Sanderling, Knot, Dunlin, Ruff,

Grey Plover, Lapwing and Golden Plover. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the elusive Bittern from the Castle Water hide or Bittern viewpoint platform. Predators also need to feed. On the downs and along the river valleys you may be lucky and encounter Short-eared Owl or Merlin. In some winters, Great Grey Shrikes and Hen Harriers can be seen huning on our Iping Common Nature Reserve in West Sussex and at sites on Ashdown Forest in the east of the county. In the early mornings, listen out for Great-spotted Woodpeckers staking out their territories. Without a song to sing, these birds will ‘drum’ on trees to make sure their rivals know they mean business. Winter is a good time to look for their smaller relative, the Lesser-spotted Woodpecker- a bird now rare in Sussex. Most of our mammals keep a low profile in winter with Hedgehogs, Dormice and Bats hibernating. However, one mammal becomes very vocal. Male and female Foxes communicate on cold winter nights with barks, yelps and blood-curdling screams as their mating season begins in January. Toads, Frogs and Newts will be more visible as they emerge from under logs and leaves and start returning to the water. Look for blobby frog spawn or long ribbons of toad eggs in your pond in February and March. On warmer days in winter a few insects may take to the air, and in recent years it has not been unusual to see red admirals flying on sunny days in January. As we head towards spring, butterflies such as Peacock, Commas, Small Tortoiseshell and Brimstone emerge from hibernation giving us a splash of colour and a preview of what’s to come.

Saxon Weald have been hard at work with their community days in December, lending a helping hand at the Horsham Foodbank and the Strawford Centre. The Horsham foodbank, who provide invaluable support to people in crisis, were in need of some volunteers to help sort and allocate food donations. Since opening in 2014, the foodbank

has fed nearly 7500 people, and in the past year alone, over 1800 people have benefitted from their support. Volunteers at the foodbank expressed their appreciation for Saxon Weald’s support: “Thanks to Saxon Weald for helping sort around two tonnes of food donated by the generous people of Horsham. The Saxon Weald team were cheerful and

enthusiastic, completing the tasks in less than half the allotted time. This will make packing the emergency and Christmas parcels so much easier.” Saxon Weald also leant some very willing hands at the Strawford Centre, which caters for a number of adults with learning difficulties, helping them develop independent and social skills for use in everyday life. The group of volunteers assisted with several stalls including cake, raffle and arts and crafts stalls. Saxon Weald were pleased to be able to see the amazing work the staff at the Strawford Centre put in every day and to help make their Christmas fayre successful. Steven Dennis, Saxon Weald’s Chief Executive, comments: “The Horsham foodbank has helped so many of our residents in crisis and the Strawford Centre provides a safe and fun place for people who might otherwise have found themselves in isolation. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to assist these fantastic causes and volunteer our assistance.”

Local writers celebrate Year of Culture with superb book

News Martin Read Early this year the Horsham Writers Circle held a ‘Writers’ Get-Together’ in Horsham Library, inviting the district’s word-smiths to come along to

plan some writing for a celebratory book - “Write Around Horsham” - by way of a tribute to our much appreciated town, its surrounds, and its literary heritage. And, thanks to the commitment and imagination of the veri-

table army of local scribes accepting the challenge with gusto, and the sterling work of the editorial team, the excellent book is now in print and available, a considerable, landmark achievement. Our district has long been a haven for outstanding writing from

Shelley, Hilaire Belloc, Hammond Innes and many more revered authors, and Write Around Horsham, with its stunning cover designed by Sian Johnson, perpetuates that tradition with over forty contributions in a wide range of genres. The Circle’s year of special events included a monthly series of booklets linked with the Museum’s ‘Literary Horsham’ theme, on some of the many literary figures associated with our district, a number of whose work is featured in the book (the booklets are available to download in PDF form from horshamwriters.co.uk). Write Around Horsham was launched at a special evening at Horsham Library, when the writers were invited to read from their contributions in an imaginatively scripted presentation, Bryan Webster, Chairman of Horsham Writers Circle telling the District Post: “When suggesting the book we hoped for a really lively mixture of imaginative and factual pieces, and that’s what happened! There are adventure stories featuring action, fantasy, romance, thrills, psychology, horror, historical and science fiction, a legend or two, stunning poetry

and some wonderfully descriptive factual items, all honouring Horsham and the wider district. The winning poems of the Friends of Horsham Park ‘Poets’ Corner’ competition have also been included in the book.” An ideal stocking filler, Write Around Horsham is published by KDP and is available from Amazon at the bargain price of £5.02. A Kindle version is available for just £0.98. Summing up the presentation event, Bryan Webster said: “It was an excellent evening - the first time the authors had seen the work of the other writers, and their entertaining readings inspired us all. The book is a success story - an absolute delight full of variety and quality writing beyond our expectations!” Horsham Writers Circle was formed in 1987 and meets in the town on the third Thursday of the month. More information about the Writers Circle and its contributions to the Horsham and District Year of Culture 2019, can be obtained from Bryan Webster, Chairman - email: bryandwebster@me.com - telephone 07964 098714

Dog bins go digital in Horsham Rotary Christmas tree re-cycling Horsham District Council has recently introduced a new slicker way to provide requests for service related to dog waste bins. QR codes have been attached to all dog waste bins, creating a live link to the “Report it” section of the Council’s website, enabling dog walkers and residents to report any problems direct, when they are out and about. Simply scan the QR code on your Smartphone (iPhone or Android 9) camera, click on the link that comes up and fill in the short form to report any issues. Please include the number on the QR code sticker. https://www.horsham.gov.uk/ waste-recycling-and-bins/litterand-street-cleaning/dog-wastebins Commenting on the new reporting mechanism Horsham Dis-

trict Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, Recycling and Waste Cllr Philip Circus said: “I am really pleased that our residents and dog walkers can now benefit from a more efficient and convenient way to report any problems with our dog waste bins. “This new digital reporting tool will ensure that our waste collection teams can be alerted to any problems more quickly than before to ensure a better service.” You are also reminded that dog waste can be disposed of in general public litter bins where a dog bin is not available, or can be taken home and be disposed of in a general waste refuse bin. Look out for the QR codes on our red dog waste bins .There shouldn’t be a problem but if there is you can let us know there and then.

scheme raises funds for local charity The Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District is again providing a service that is welcomed by the Community and which helps to ‘green’ our area. Once the festivities are over and it’s time to pack away the Christmas tinsel and baubles, there is the irksome and awkward task of disposing of the Christmas tree. Well there is now an alternative option to the trip to the Household waste tip. For the third year running Rotary members will collect Christmas Trees, with the help of Chanctonbury Lions Club, after twelfth night from 6 to 12 January then recycle them in an ecofriendly way on an Ashington farm - all for a minimum donation of £5 per tree. The scheme is being publicised by labelling trees in participating garden centres and leaflets distributed during Rotary’s Christmas collection. Last year nearly 200 trees were collected raising approximately £1000, all of which was donated to Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The trees will be chipped, with the residue ready for use around the farm, by Rob Dakin of Findon Valley Tree Care who donates his fee to the charity.

Rotary’s project coordinator, Ray Miles was really pleased with how the project went last year. Residents were delighted to avoid all the inconvenience and mess of transporting trees to the tip or burning them, knowing that they will have a ‘green’ end use and that a very worthwhile charity is to benefit in the process. Storrington & Pulborough

District Rotary Club is grateful to all of its partners in this venture including Chanctonbury Lions, Chris & Len Earl and Findon Valley Tree Care; to the participating Christmas Tree retailers (Big Plant Nursery, Gatley’s Country Store and Oldfield Stables); and particularly to all the local residents who are expected to support the project.

Launch of Our Village Scheme in Storrington

Horsham District Council’s Storrington Neighbourhood Wardens have just launched the Our Village Scheme, designed to protect

vulnerable members of the local community. The scheme is an initiative which originated in Horsham and allows individuals to enter a

business venue that displays the Our Village logo, knowing that the personnel within will assist them by addressing their concerns and calling a next of kin or an agreed contact should they meet any difficulties. With the overwhelming support of local businesses in Storrington there are now over a dozen venues in the village with their distinctive window badge displayed prominently in the shop window. Information packs are available from those stores. Blush Hair Boutique were initial supports of the scheme. The managers, Aden and Georgina Winser, assisted the Neighbourhood Wardens in presenting the inaugural Our Village card to Grace. It is with the support of Grace and her mother, Sharon that has allowed the project to flourish. Aden, the manager at Blush said “We are proud to be in the heart of the local community offering a safe place for all”. Current participants are Blush, Boots, Costa, Joanna’s Boutique Tearooms, Velvet Hare, The Village Deli, Storrington Library, The Post Office, Carters of Storrington, The Card Shop, Waitrose, Tesco Esso Express, Impulse Leisure Centre, Truffles Bakery and Oomoo Organic Hair Salon.

High-tech upgrade for trafficlight controlled junction

The second phase of improvements at traffic-light controlled junctions in Horsham is scheduled to start in January. The Copnall Way/Albion Way junction has now been fully refurbished and upgraded. Subject to factors such as severe weather, work will begin on the next phase, the Springfield Road/Albion Way junction improvements, on January 6, 2020. Signal heads and poles will be replaced, the latest detectors installed, pedestrian crossings upgraded to a ‘Puffin’ style, and tactile surfaces refreshed. The new traffic signals will use LED technology, be more energy-

efficient, cost less to run and will be more reactive to traffic movements. The scheme will also include additional low-level signal heads for cyclists only, giving them a five-second ‘head start’ over vehicles for improved safety. During the works, the existing pedestrian crossings will be temporarily taken out of use and alternative crossing points will be set up. Temporary traffic lights and lane closures will also be used. The work is scheduled to take until the end of February. The two phases of works will cost a total of about £350,000.

Billingshurst marketing agency SANTA raises record wins Sussex Business Award amount for Sussex charity

Billingshurst-based full-service marketing agency PMW Communications is celebrating after being named Employer of the Year at the recent Sussex

Business Awards. The coveted awards are in their 31st year and celebrate achievement and talent from across the county. The event recognised

companies from many sectors and highlighted what a rich and varied business community there is in both East and West Sussex. The judges for the Employer of the Year category were looking for a company that goes above and beyond for its staff and, amongst many other qualities, PMW was recognised for its positive culture, rewarding long service, helping staff achieve their ambitions, and its values of creativity, integrity, thinking big and supporting the local area. Peter Sutton, Managing Director of PMW, commented: “Having been operating for over 26 years, we fully appreciate that PMW’s continued success has a lot to do with the hard work, commitment and dedication of our exceptional team. We put a lot of thought and effort into providing a working environment that is conducive to creativity, as well as being a pleasant, healthy and supportive place to be. We’re thrilled this has been recognised by the Sussex Business Awards – what a fantastic way to end the year!”

A family-run business has broken all records with its two Santa’s grottos this year, and thanks everyone who has made it possible to help a Sussex charity raise muchneeded funds. Elves celebrated a very busy month, counting all the money raised for The Budding Foundation charity which came to a whopping £41,358. Tate of Sussex Garden Centres donated space at two of its venues: Santa’s Toy Factory at South Downs Nurseries and Santa’s Enchanted Forest at Old Barn Garden Centre. They each welcomed more children than ever in the run-up to Christmas. “We are thrilled to have been

able to help The Budding Foundation raise so much money and would like to thank the charity and their team of 60 volunteer elves for all their hard work running the grottos this year”, says Sarah Mead a director of the family-run business. “I have enjoyed meeting some of the children the charity has helped, who have come to visit Santa this year. The money raised will make a real difference to the lives of children and their families in Sussex.” Thank you to everyone who came and supported the charity by visiting Santa and to everyone who made a donation. This money will make a huge difference to children and families in Sussex.

Hall & Woodhouse raises over Calling all businesses £24,000 for air ambulance charities and entrepreneurs through its charity dish initiative

Hall & Woodhouse (H&W), the leading independent familyowned brewer, raised over £24,000 in 2019 through its charity dish initiative in aid of eight local air ambulance charities. The 52 pubs in H&W’s managed house estate across the south have included a charity dish on the menu throughout the year, with 25p from the sale of each dish going directly to the charities. Two years ago, H&W team members voted to make the

eight air ambulance charities their official charity partner until 2020. Through the partnership, Devon, Dorset and Somerset, Great Western, Hampshire and Isle of Wight, Kent Surrey Sussex, London, Thames Valley and Wiltshire Air Ambulances will receive support from the company. The current charity dish is ham, egg and chips and earlier in the year it was sausage and mash. Lucinda Gray, Company Relationship Manager, said: “We are

very grateful to all our guests for supporting our local air ambulances this year by purchasing our charity dish. Our menus explain this initiative, so our guests understand that through their choice, a 25p donation is going straight to the local air ambulance charities, to continue saving lives. “This is one of many initiatives that we have created across our estate and throughout the two-year partnership, our team members have come together to raise as much money as possible. We are proud to have already raised over quarter of a million pounds during this partnership.” A total of £114,287 was raised in 2018 for the air ambulance charities and the 2019 total will be calculated in the new year, having surpassed all expectations. The 52 pubs that make up Hall & Woodhouse’s manged house estate stretch from Bristol to Exeter, and London to Brighton. In Sussex Hall & Woodhouse has seven managed houses including The Black Rabbit in Arundel, The World’s End in Patching and The Hornbrook Inn, Horsham. Please visit www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk for more information.

Horsham primary schoolchildren shine in Virgin Media’s Christmas Stars competition A Horsham primary school is celebrating after being named as a semi-finalist in Virgin Media’s Christmas Stars competition – a search to find the UK’s best primary school Christmas play. Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School has won £100 after reaching the final stage of the competition and was one of only 24 UK primary schools in the running to have their festive production filmed and shared with four million Virgin TV customers this Christmas. In addition, the school will receive two ukuleles thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit West End show, School of Rock the Musical – which partnered with Virgin Media on the competition. Although the school did not win the overall prize, they impressed

a panel of judges with their entry for their play - a twist on Charles Dickens’ classic novel, ‘A Christmas Carol’. In this contemporary version, Scrooge is transported back to the time of the dinosaurs, workhouse orphans, as well a lunar visit to the Moon to meet aliens. During his journey, Scrooge is visited by three spirits on Christmas Eve who encourage him to change his ways. A panel of judges included praised the school for its creative and imaginative Christmas play. David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, commented: “Well done to Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School for being a semi-finalist in Virgin Media’s Christmas Stars competition 2019.

“Everyone at the school should be proud of their fantastic festive entry and we’re delighted they’ve won a prize. Tony Bright from the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School said: “QE2 school were thrilled to be chosen as one of the finalists in the competition. “It was a real privilege to have the creative work of our students and staff recognised on a national platform.” Incredible entries Virgin Media’s Christmas Stars competition captured the imagination of primaryschools across the UK with entries ranging from traditional nativities to modern takes on fairy tales and plenty of stories featuring Santa.

Brighton Festival Chorus, Christmas Concert, The Dome

Entertainment Phil Dennett For many people this Christmas concert marked the start of the Christmas season. Blending the finesse of the Royal Philharmonic with the grace of two choirs and two good soloists was just the right recipe to sell out the Dome on Sunday. (note for ed- Dec 8) What a glorious sound they all made. The Royal Philharmonic had a lot of fun with numbers like

Anderson’s so-seasonal Sleigh Ride and Twelve Days of Christmas throwing in their musical jokes while maintaining the integrity of the music. Soprano Juliette Pochin threw in her own amusing Christmas shopping take on My Favourite Things and a member of the audience got the biggest hand of the afternoon by gleefully conducting the Hallelujah Chorus. It all created a feel-good mood that inspired some lusty audience singing in traditional carols.

The Brighton Festival Choir and its youth choir were on top form, the youngsters showing great control on meeting the challenges of Betehelemu and Mary had a Baby, with a fine solo on Caresse sur l’Ocean. Youngsters Chloe, Hannah and Connie (their surnames were not announced) endeared themselves with some enchanting solos that were well appreciated by the audience. The superb consistency of the senior choir decked the hall with melodies wrapped in layers of gorgeous sound, particularly the moving Lux Aurumque. For Rutter’s beautiful Candlelight Carol they moved from the lightness of butterflies to the soaring of eagles, helped by some beguiling woodwind. Jesus Christ The Apple Tree was equally delightful. Baritone Robert Davies, a late replacement for the unwell Trystan Llyr Griffiths, brought suitable gravitas from the Messiah, joining Juliette Pochin for some entertaining duets. Louise Goodwin on Timpani showed perfect timing in adding any required drama and, like the rest of the orchestra, seemed to be enjoying herself immensely. This was a concert that nicely bottled the Christmas spirit.

Millais annual Panto: Dick Whittington ‘On the last day of term, the staff and Senior Prefects entertained all 1500 students with a version of the traditional pantomime Dick Whittingtonand his Cat. There were three performances during the day as pantomime replaced lesson time! It was a colourful, lively and highly interactive event where students were treated to a fun experience of seeing staff in pantomime costumes interacting with the audience with great enthusiasm on both sides! It was a very meaningful greeting as all the

Horsham’s Sussex stars visit sick children Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Just before Christmas Sussex cricketers, including Horsham’s Tom Haines and Will Beer accompanied CEO Rob Andrews to the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton to spread some festive cheer by delivering presents. The visit was part of an ongoing partnership between The Royal Alexandra and the Sussex Cricket Foundation, who, from January 2020, will be funding an hour’s activity every week for children on the wards. Speaking at the end of the visit, Rob Andrew said: “It was a fantastic morning visiting the children and staff, and a wonderful opportunity for our professional players to inspire children on the wards. It has been a very humbling experience and hopefully the players and staff have been able to spread some Christ-

mas spirit. Going forward, our foundation and The Royal Alex will be working closely to deliver both practical and learn-based sessions for the children. We are looking forward to working with the Play Team at the hospital closely throughout 2020.” Amy Farmer, Senior Play Specialist at the Royal Alexandra, added: “It is so important to the children and their families to have special visits over the Christmas period. It’s lovely of Sussex Cricket to schedule a visit and take time out of their busy schedule. It really brightens and breaks up the day in the hospital.” While Sussex international Tymal Mills said: “Being in hospital is never nice – especially at Christmas – but the staff, families and of course, the children here were very inspiring. It’s tough, but they’re all incredibly strong. The kids were lovely and it was a privilege to visit and put some smiles on their faces.”

Horsham complete double over Beckenham Saturday December 21 – RFU London 1 South League Beckenham 3 12 Horsham Rugby Richard Ordidge After a series of defeats against the top sides in the league Horsham go into the Christmas break in better heart with two successive wins against London Cornish and then Beckenham 12-3 to climb to eighth and away from their brief flirtation with the relegation zone. Horsham and Beckenham know each other well having both been promoted last season from London 2 South East with the Kent side as champions and having enjoyed many a competitive contest with each other over the past few years. Beckenham beat Horsham twice last season, but with the Green and Whites having won at Coolhurst 32-22 in September they were keen to complete the double when they travelled to Balmoral Avenue. Both sides had undergone several selection changes going into the game due to injury and unavailability but with Horsham making five positional changes from last week in the back line alone it was the Beckenham side that had the more familiar look. With part of Beckenham’s main pitch under water the game was switched to a junior pitch and combined with the heavy, muddy conditions the match was always likely to become a tightly fought arm wrestle. With line breaks at a premium, and a world away from the pristine surface of the Artificial

Grass Pitch at Horsham which the Green and Whites are used to playing on, the match could have gone either way. A jubilant Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said after the game: “The game was moved to an unfeasibly narrow third team pitch which will have suited Beckenham’s large pack and nullified our dangerous backs. However, from the off it was clear that we were up for this game playing with a directness and physicality that ensured we dominated large swathes of the game.” Following good defence Horsham built a field position and eventually on 15 minutes a good inside pass to Ciaran Preston saw him line break and pass to the supporting Kemp Price to step his man and finish out wide from 25 metres. The game was being played in the central part of the pitch and with both defences holding firm there were no other scores and Horsham went into the half time break leading 5-0. Early in the second half Johnny Ordidge powered through the centres to then pass to the supporting Declan Nwachukwu who chipped on ahead and with the ball bobbling around Nick Bell was the first to follow up and ground the ball under the posts. The try was converted by Jordan Bell and after 47 minutes Horsham were leading 12-0. Beckenham narrowed the deficit with a penalty kick, but they lost a player to the sin bin with a desperate high tackle on Nwachukwu making a come-back unlikely as Horsham saw out time to win 12-3. Stocker went on to say: “Kemp Price’s try was testament to this hard work where Ciaran’s angle in

attack and composure to put Kemp away was just rewards for the patience we showed all afternoon. This patience was especially evident despite the expected advantage of Beckenham having to play with 14 men following early injuries to two front row players never materialising on account of the narrowness of the ground. Perhaps the starkest example of this performance today was the grand total of three penalties conceded all game which in wet and muddy conditions with a huge number of phases was very impressive. With all players producing good performances, in particular players like Dan Cass, Ciaran Preston, Jonny Goward, Jordan Smith and Declan Nwachukwu were all instrumental in getting us front foot ball. Johnny Ordidge had a great carrying game relishing the opportunity to run at one of our former players all afternoon and making great yards on every occasion, whereas Kemp Price, returning from two years out with injury showed his class from the off. However, despite all these strong performances, we settled on awarding man of the match to debutant and current colt Ollie Chennell who alongside Ord in the centres had a great start to his 1st team career. We finally get a well-deserved break for the next couple of weeks and return with a home fixture versus HAC on the 4th January 2020 which will be a tough fixture in the back of the undoubted seasonal joy that the squad will partake in over the coming weeks.”

Horsham’s Tom Clark selected in England’s U19 World Cup squad Roffey’s Ben Manenti stars for Sydney Sixers in Aussie Big Bash Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prolific Roffey all rounder Ben Manenti is enjoying the Australian summer playing for Sydney Sixers in the Aussie Big Bash T20 competition, with top off spinning wickets. Sides from Sussex and further afield in the UK know to their cost how destructive Manenti’s right hand batting, can be – and, over here, he scored a century for Kent Second XI – but the Sydney Sixers are yet to fully realise lethal potential of his batting Roffey are hoping that popular 22 year old Manenti will return for the 2020 season, but it remains to be seen whether his emergence onto the Australian professional scene will preclude this.

Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Hats off to Tom Clark – Horsham Cricket Club is thrilled that his strong batting and fielding performances for England Under 19s in the recently completed tri series in Antigua has secured him a much coveted place in the 15 man U19 National squad for the ICC U19 World Cup in South Africa. The warm ups start on Sunday January 12 v Zimbabwe, with a second game against the West Indies at Kimberley two days later, soon followed by the preliminary round ties against Australia and Nigeria, ahead of the Knock Out stages from January 27th, with the Final on February 9th. After England U19s reached the final of the Rising Stars Tri-Series in Antigua, Head Coach Jon Lewis said: “I’m excited to see what this squad can do at the World Cup - it will be a great challenge for them both on and off the field, playing in unfamiliar conditions against new opposition in matches that will be televised around the world. The series in Antigua has shown that our core group of players can perform well in a challenging environment. Each individual is improving in their specific roles within the side, but in South

Africa we’ll need to ensure these roles all come together to produce good team performances.” Lewis continued: “We’ve seen in Antigua, and in our home triseries this summer against India

and Bangladesh, that we can beat some of the best teams in the world. I look forward to seeing how we can take that confidence into the pressurised environment of a World Cup.”

Three second half goals scupper nine man Horsham Photo by John Lines

Thursday December 26 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Worthing 3-0 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Enduring the Boxing Day wet, the almost 1,000 strong crowd observed that there was nothing to choose between the two sides in the first half, but Horsham made life difficult for themselves by having two players sent off against a challenging Worthing outfit, going on to concede three telling second half goals. The game started quietly, although Alex Kelly needed to head a threatening free kick to safety, Hornets’ keeper George Bentley subsequently punching clear Jesse Starkey’s corner. Then, just before the quarter of an hour mark, Hor-

sham had the chance to take the lead when Harvey Sparks supplied Chris Smith, the ball then going from Rob O’Toole back to Sparks, who could only fire wide. With the action hotting up, Worthing’s Alex Parsons was carded for an illegal tackle on Sparks, who was, importantly, sanctioned for dissent. Horsham survived a scare when Reece Meekums got through, but he was mercifully off target. Sparks then had cause to regret his earlier impetuosity when he manhandled Parsons, earning a fatal second yellow and early shower, the score remaining goal-less at the break. Re-starting with what they hoped would be a compensatory line up, Horsham soon found themselves a goal down when Parsons’ incursion enabled him to get his right foot shot past Bentley – just – the keeper’s vain effort cruelly failing to prevent the

ball from bobbling into the goal. And, Bentley was promptly called upon again after a defensive error culminated in a Worthing free kick, which was safely batted away. Next, Harry Mills had a rare opportunity for the Hornets, but his attempt was easily gathered by Carl Rushworth in the home goal. Rushworth was promptly back in the limelight when JJ O’Sullivan challenged with a free-kick, but Horsham’s slim chance of glory was scuppered when Ben Dyett was controversially dismissed for what was ruled to be too robust a challenge, Worthing’s Ollie Pearce taking advantage of a blunder at the back to double the hosts’ lead, beating Bentley in the air with five minutes of normal time remaining. And, Pearce soon twisted the knife when he benefited from lax defending, with his second, well-taken, goal in the 90th minute. Horsham play Worthing again, in the Quarter Final of the Sussex Senior Cup, at the Camping World Stadium on Tuesday January 7th Nearing the half way stage of the season, the defeat leaves Horsham third with 40 points. Folkestone are top and Worthing second, both with 44 points, these leading three sides having all played 21 games. Hornchurch are fourth, two points adrift of Horsham, but with two games in hand, while historic Corinthian Casuals, soon to visit Horsham, are in the basement, one point and two behind Wingate & Finchley and Brightlingsea, respectively.

Competitive but unfulfilled YMCA settle for draw Saturday December 21 – Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Crawley Down Gatwick 1-1 Horsham YMCA Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

This away fixture was played on the artificial pitch at Steyning’s Shooting Field, because of adverse conditions at Crawley Down Gatwick’s ground. The neutral venue on the Saturday before Christmas resulted in a sparse crowd, but spectators were entertained by a lively game, YM again demonstrating that they are more than capable of holding their own against opposition several places above them in the table. The last time the teams met was in the Sussex Senior Cup on November 5th, when YM won 4-0, this time it was a far closer affair. Sam Lemon - recently signed from Alfold – was in immediate action for YM, earning a corner, and, by the three minute mark, YM had already launched the same number of attacks. CDG, though, responded, Ollie Moore blasting well over, before their free kick was headed off and Michael Wood’s strong low strike was pushed away by YM keeper

Aaron Jeal for a second corner. Jack Ryder then had a good opportunity to put YM in front, but after he was hustled off the ball action switched to the other end, where a cross went off for CDG’s third corner, following which Lemon unleashed a long range strike deflected for the first of YM’s two corners in quick succession. A free kick was then gathered by CDG keeper Sam Smith at the second attempt, sustained pressure giving YM the lead when Jack Frankland was put through to score from close quarters in the 19th minute. Smith then had to rush out to clear, but CDG replied with a free kick from the corner flag, Ben Chowney’s header inducing a good diving save from Jeal. Two volleys from YM’s Ash Dugdale and a Matt Daniel strike were blocked either side of YM’s fourth corner, the first half ending 1-0 in YM’s favour despite a late CDG break through finding the side netting and their free kick being punched clear. The restart began with YM pressing hard. First, Smith had to dive to keep out Lemon’s shot, followed by Matt Daniel’s header resulting in the first of YM’s two corners, Guy Harding heading the second just over. YM were getting plenty of possession but were unable to convert into goals. But,

CDG remained competitive with two corners of their own, interspersed with an excellent reaction save from Jeal, who was then called on to negate a long range punt. CDG were moving the ball quickly, and YM escaped when Josh Brown’s strike bounced behind off the top of the bar. Then, when Dan Evans fired the ball across the CDG goal it just evaded YM forwards, ahead of Wood skewing a blast well over before Jeal saved with his feet, and, with a goal seemingly coming, the ball went out to Oli Leslie for him to tap in the equaliser just before the mid point of the half. As YM looked to regain the advantage, sub Tony Nwachukwu supplied Lemon, only for Smith to intervene. YM then benefited from a bad CDG miss, Brown failing to put away a golden one on one opportunity from close range. In the closing minutes CDG had a free kick on the edge of the area, Ben Hands then saw his shot being pushed off by the diving Jeal for CDG’s sixth corner. But, there was still time for Dan Evans to set up Daniel, albeit to no avail, before a late YM corner was scrambled off the goal line, the final whistle heralding the 1-1 draw, a fair result leaving both sides to rue missing out on a number of scoring chances.

Horsham Football Club stages first international Sunday December 29 – CONIFA World Cup Qualifier Chagos Islands FA 0-6 FA Panjab Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Football Club was delighted to welcome the Chagos Islands and FA Panjab teams to The Camping World Stadium last Sunday for a CONIFA World Cup Qualifier. CONIFA, the global non profit Football Federation for all Associations not affiliated to FIFA, supports international football teams from nations, regions, minority peoples and sports isolated territories. The first CONIFA World Cup was held in Sweden in 2014, with the next one in Skopje, the capital of the Republic of North Macedonia, in 2020. Chagossians were evicted from the tropical islands in the Chagos archipelago – part of the British Indian Ocean territory, south of the Maldives – to enable a US military base to be built on Diego Garcia in the early 1970s, the inhabitants being dispersed mainly to the Seychelles and the UK, notably Crawley. FA Panjab represents the Punjab Region –

stretching across parts of East Pakistan and Northern India, drawing in players from around the UK. Chagos, managed by Sussex based Jimmy Ferrar, formerly with Crawley Down Gatwick and Alfold, are an emerging team, whereas FA Panjab got through to the 2016 CONIFA World Cup Final, losing on penalties. In the first half, bigger, stronger Panjab had almost total possession and were very composed on the ball, to lead 5-0 at the break with goals from their Captain, Aran Singh Basi, Shaqs Master and a Shuja Mahmood hat trick, Chagos’ limited chances included denial by the woodwork and an exhilarating bicycle kick sailing over. The second half, though, was a different story - with a changed format, spirited Chagos gave a far better account of themselves with great energy and much more of the ball, creating far more opportunities and hitting the bar. But, the damage had been done in the first half, Azza sealing Chagos’ fate with a further goal for Panjab. Sixteen teams will play in the 2020 CONIFA World Cup, the draw being made in Jersey between January 24-26.

YMCA and Broadbridge Heath battle out entertaining draw Saturday December 28 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3-3 Broadbridge Heath Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter

Local derbies between YM and Heath are always closely fought, this encounter being a prime, engaging, example, with Heath taking the lead three times only for YM to keep equalising, lastly from the penalty spot in the 92nd minute. Heath got off to a lively start, earning a free kick before Max Howell sought to lob YM keeper Aaron Jeal. YM responded with a set piece, eventually hooked wide by Matt Daniel before Howell was again off target. A good YM build up culminated with the diving Daniel heading past the post, and another Heath free kick came to nothing. A period of sustained YM pressure followed, with three non challenging corners in quick succession. After Jack Frankland fired just over, Heath took up the cudgel with three corners of their own, ahead of Jamie Taylor scooping the ball over Jeal’s head to put Heath in front in the 37th minute. Heath then had their fourth corner in the space of three minutes, but Alfie Jones was wayward. YM soon had a goal disallowed, but a strike from Ryder on the cusp of half time drew the scores level, 1-1 at the break. The second half started equally strongly, Heath soon recapturing their lead when Howell’s

high shot eluded Jeal’s reach. Two more YM corners came after Ryder headed adrift and YM were fortunate to keep 11 men on the pitch when, with the ref and linesman in close attendance, a sliding, studs up tackle off the ball cut into Cameron Watts’ knee, a red card going begging. Tony Nwachukwu was substituted on for YM, immediately breaking through, but it took until the 80th minute for YM restore parity again, Ryder hooking in from behind. Two close quarter YM free kicks followed, the ball hitting the post and being scrambled away. But, it was Heath who scored next, Howell striking cleanly into the top right corner, giving Jeal no chance with just two minutes of normal time remaining. Pressing for at least a share of the points, YM had ten players in Heath’s half, but Sam Lemon could only head straight to Heath keeper Conor Evento. There was, though, still just enough added time for YM to score again, Matt Daniel converting a penalty after Ryder had been downed in the box, Jones’ second yellow causing him to leave the field. Neutral observers declared a fair result, but Heath remained aggrieved by the leniency shown towards the brutal tackle on Watts, felt to be a game changer. The draw places YM 11th and Heath 14th. On Saturday YM remain at Gorings Mead to welcome Loxwood, bottom and win-less after 17 starts, whereas Heath have another mid table local derby with a visit to Alfold, one spot above them in the table.
