Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter

Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. A first for the Horsham District, this year-long celebration came to a bright, colourful and magical end on 31 December 2019. From the Horsham Park laser light launch in January to the Light Up Horsham spectacular in Horsham’s Market Square throughout the whole of December, the Year of Culture presented the ultimate profile raiser for the District’s culture and heritage and has left an enduring legacy of learnings, events and activities to be explored and enjoyed by residents and visitors long after 2019. The extensive programme, with some 650 events and activities resulted in every single parish of the District being involved in the celebrations. This major showcase of local arts, heritage, song, dance, literature, theatre and music most certainly did not disappoint in its appeal to everyone from the District and beyond. Some 38 projects were funded directly by the Council’s Year of Culture team including major public art sculptures such as those at Warnham Nature Reserve, the first ever Horsham Film Festival, the triumph of a Horsham Children’s Parade, a year- long series of celebrations in Henfield, a District wide play writing competition, the Horsham District Street Pianos project and many more. Large scale Council organised events included rural touring of the

Red Lion play, outdoor folk opera Tree & Wood at Leonardslee and the Light Up Horsham projections. Specially commissioned district landscapes were created by local artist Sarah Duffield and exhibited for all to enjoy at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, and 12 special hidden gems were revealed to the public. Year of Culture attracted some 400 fringe events including a hugely popular vegan festival, the return of the Christ’s Hospital Band to Horsham Town Centre, a performance from the London Welsh Male Voice Choir, an informal outside art project called Watch This Space and author nights with supper club WeFiFo, to name but a few. Our West Sussex County Council libraries stepped up to the plate and had hundreds of readers involved in the Horsham District Reading Challenge. Thank you to London Gatwick and Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens our headline sponsors, and to the numerous other companies who have sponsored and supported the project along the way. Huge thanks also to the volunteers, organisers, artists, venues and many others who have given their time, talents, energy and enthusiasm to make this year happen. And finally, do look out for future events which are set to return as a result of this game changer of a year.

Improvements to Rusper Road north of the A264 are part of early infrastructure works Legal & General has submitted detailed plans to Horsham District Council for a key point of arrival into the sustainable new community at land north of Horsham. The plans for Rusper Road, called Principal Access Works 2 (PAW2) will link the A264 to a new roundabout at the heart of the development and ensure a high-quality environment for everyone using this route. The plans are part of the early works being delivered by Legal & General to open up the site and provide access to the new homes, businesses, green spaces and amenities within the first phase. They were a key feature of Legal & General’s consultation events at The Holbrook Club in November and received a positive response from local people. Sebastian Balcombe, senior land and planning manager at Legal & General, said: “We are committed to delivering an attractive, welcoming and high-quality community at land north of Horsham and that means getting the detail right. “Detailed plans for this part of Rusper Road were already approved, but we worked with Horsham District Council to identify how we could make them better. Our plans are for a greener route that respects the existing landscape by retaining as many trees and hedgerows as possible, and creates a more positive sense of arrival for everyone – from people in cars and buses to pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders too. “There are also practical benefits to our plans as they will help to minimise disruption for existing road users and utilities when the works are taking place. “We are keen to engage the community in all aspects of our plans and we were delighted with the response we received at our first events in November. Most people we talked to could see the benefits of this greener route and agreed with our approach.” A decision on the enhanced plans for Rusper Road is expected this spring. If approved, construction is expected to begin in autumn 2020 and finish in early 2021. The Rusper Road enhancements will be the second stage of major road improvements being delivered by Legal & General in the next 18 months. Construction work is due to start early this year on an improved roundabout at the junction of the A264 and Rusper Road. The detailed design of the improved roundabout was approved in 2018 and will increase capacity, reduce delays and improve safety compared with the existing roundabout. The works are expected to finish this autumn. The improved roundabout is key to the delivery of the new Bohunt Horsham School on the north of Horsham site. Detailed plans for the new school were submitted by the Department for Education in August and approved

by Horsham District Council in December 2019. The school is expected to open in September 2021. Progress with broader plans to deliver a sustainable community As well as progressing plans for early infrastructure, Legal & General is also finalising a Design and Landscape Strategy to illustrate the vision for the new community. The Strategy is a key requirement of the planning permission for land north of Horsham and will guide the design of the landscape, public spaces and buildings in the first phase. Sebastian Balcombe said: “As master developer, Legal & General will deliver the main public areas of the development, including roads, green spaces and community facilities. New homes and commercial buildings will be built by different housebuilders and contractors. The Design and Landscape Strategy will ensure these meet our quality, design and sustainability aspirations for the site, which was an important issue for local people at our recent events and a commitment we were happy to give.” Legal & General is expecting to submit the Design and Landscape Strategy to Horsham District Council Strategy early this year. It will include guidance on: The approach to development in different character areas Different building types and use of materials How transport corridors are planned to meet a range of needs Strategies for open space, sport and recreation areas How street furniture and public art is incorporated into public spaces Construction phasing and sustainability principles Commenting on other priorities for this year, Sebastian Balcombe said: “Legal & General has only been involved in land north of Horsham for 12 months but we’ve achieved a lot in that time. We’re now ready to start delivering early infrastructure and progressing our vision for the first phase. “Our community events started a really positive and constructive dialogue with local people. We look forward to continuing that over the next year and asking the community to help shape the detail of our plans for community facilities, green spaces and how they’re used. “We know also that the pedestrian and cycle bridge over the A264 is a priority for the community and we’re committed to engaging with the relevant authorities to progress the work needed to deliver it.” Legal & General is the master developer for land north of Horsham, which was granted outline planning permission in 2018 for 2,750 private and affordable homes in a range of sizes and 500,000 sq ft of high-quality employment space. The development will deliver around £50 million of funding for essential services, community facilities and improvements to local roads,

public transport, and walking and cycling routes. The first phase is located either side of Rusper Road and is set to deliver around 1,000 homes over the next five years. The Weald wins Well-Being Award

In the summer of 2018, Optimus Education advertised their new national accreditation called the Well-Being Award for Schools and Headteacher (Peter Woodman) immediately made enquiries to find out how to participate in the scheme. The school had been working for a long time on increasing and improving pastoral support for students who needed additional care and explained in a statement: â&#x20AC;&#x153;we were also concerned about the

increasing strains put on staff in schools due to external services being cut. We were advised by Optimus that there were two routes towards achieving the accreditation: either a school-led or an advisor-led approach. We opted for the advisor-led approach so that we would receive support from an expert who visits many schools as part of their work and could ensure we adopted best practice. Achieving the award in itself was never the priority; rather, it was the work

that went into achieving the award that was the most significant factor in our decision to go ahead. The first part of the process was a meeting with our advisor who talked us through the 8 areas of the accreditation and asked us to set out our current provision at the time. She then provided concrete strategies for completing each of the 8 stages and gave us an outline of an action plan. We appointed a Well-Being Team, made up of a Head of House (Phillipa Robins),

one of our Sixth Form Managers (Dee Gammond), our safeguarding Governor (Sally Catchpole), our Head of Character and Culture (Matt Fry), a member of staff with an active interest in this area of work (Andy Cooper) and the Deputy Headteacher (Sarah Edwards). We met monthly to review the action plan, complete a SWOT analysis of our provision and set interim targets on the action plan. What quickly became clear was that our provision for staff and students for well-being was varied but not strategic and certainly not coherently drawn together or well advertised to those who needed it. Over the course of 9 months, the team continued working towards achieving the award, and hosted an interim visit from our advisor who checked our progress in the 8 areas and provided support and practical guidance on our next steps. The most significant part of the work was in creating a coherent strategy for the award which involved setting whole-school targets with SMART outcomes and staff responsible for achieving them. Once this was in place, the aims and objectives of what our end result was to look like became much clearer. The most evident impact of this strategy has been a new Weald Framework which moved away from our old community framework and towards a structure to underpin every aspect of our vision and ethos as a school: namely, that educating young people to become decent citizens who are successful in their chosen paths beyond school can

only be done by focussing on their characteristics and not wholly on their academic pursuits. This new framework was drawn up with contributions from the wider student and staff body and has been welcomed wholeheartedly by all stakeholders. The final part of the process was the verification visit at the end of November. Our assessor required meetings with a range of stakeholders (including students, staff, parents and governors), an interview with the Headteacher and a presentation by the Well-Being Team. Finally, he reviewed all of the evidence we had put together and immediately judged our work to be unequivocally in line with their expectations to pass the accreditation. The impact of achieving this award has been very broad: it has served as a tremendous acknowledgement of the work of our pastoral team across the school which in turn has proven to be a great motivator to continue to drive our standards of care for our students even higher. In addition, the assessor provided us with some specific feedback which we are keen to follow up. Whilst we know our aim of making our provision coherent and thorough has been met, the second critical aim of advertising this support needs further work. We look forward to working with students, parents, staff and governors to continue this critical work on behalf of the whole community of The Weald.â&#x20AC;?

Although it’s no longer the Christmas season, the story of the grit and determination of a young Horsham student’s race against time, followed by her donation of £275 towards the Horsham Matters Night Shelter for the homeless this winter, needs to be told. Meredith Howes-Yarlett is studying Astrophysics at Aberystwyth University, and applied

for a postal vote for the General Election on 12 December in her home constituency of Horsham. It never arrived and she made the decision to race by train from Aberystwyth to Horsham in order to vote. Her postal vote turned up as she left for the station, but it still needed to be presented in person. Merry then embarked on a journey of hundreds of miles

using five different trains, with the goal of arriving in Horsham at 9.27pm, which would have given her just enough time to tear across to the council offices to present her vote before the deadline of 10pm. Her story spread across both Twitter and Facebook and she was cheered on by thousands of people! Mum Rodena set up a Crowdfunder in Merry’s name to reward her dedication to democracy with the cost of her ticket with any surplus to be donated to the Horsham Matters Night Shelter, which provides food and shelter to the homeless over the Winter. (Details here: https://www. horsham-matters.org.uk/nightshelter) Sadly, due to train delays at Wolverhampton, a connection was missed, and Merry did not make it to Horsham in time to vote. However, some good has come from her adventure as Merry came to the Horsham Matters’ Charity Superstore on Monday (6 January) to present a cheque for £275, to be used to support Horsham street homeless people this winter.

Council advises on the use of drones Many people, including children, may have received a drone or model aircraft for Christmas and Horsham District Council are providing advice about new legislation governing the use of drones. From 30 November 2019, any Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), as drones and model aircraft are officially known, that weighs between 250g and 20kg must now adhere to certain restrictions. Owners of all ages must show they are capable of flying the aircraft safely by passing a

theory test in order to gain an Operator ID. There are strict rules for flying a drone including keeping them at least 50m away from people and properties, always keeping the drone in sight, keeping away from aircraft and airports and adhering to privacy laws if the drone has a camera. New table tennis opportunities for Horsham kids this New Year Horsham Table Tennis Club, in conjunction with Horsham District Council, is geared up to offer more opportunities to cater for players of all types and levels in 2020. The New Year will see the introduction of a new one-to-one coaching service to help fasttrack improvement. The details for this and other coaching session opportunities can be viewed in the ‘Programme’ section of www.horshamtabletennisclub. co.uk Additionally, a new starter course TTKidz, is also set to begin in early February and will be run out of the club’s satellite venue at Collyer’s on Friday nights. So parents, if you have a boy or girl eager to get an appropriately pitched and fun grounding in a fantastic and often underestimated sport get him/her signed up at www.ttkidz.co.uk TTKidz is an entry route for youngsters into a more widely growing junior coaching and competition offer. Other sessions for older and more established youngsters are running on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Greenway Academy based table tennis group has grown its coach and volunteer ranks significantly over the last 12 months, having received great support

from Table Tennis England and Horsham District Council, and its expanded team is looking to make further progress in engaging more players to one of the most accessible sports available. Over October and November the club was one of the first to run the new governing body promoted TTKidz eight-week programme, aimed at engaging 6-11 year olds. Some 28 youngsters took up the initiative, making for the biggest initial programme in the whole country. No bigger expression of progress can be seen than the club fielding nine National Cadet League under 15 teams and four teams entering the under 18 National Junior League, running at Sussex University, Brighton. The club’s matchplay nights on Friday evenings at Collyer’s College continue to offer an excellent opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to compete informally in a large facility that allows lots of players to play lots of matches. On the adult front, the club continues to be proactive with the ladies (14 years plus) coaching programme attracting a strong following. Sessions restart at Collyer’s College today (10 January). An inter-business competition

is being planned to run in February to raise funds for local charity Set4Success, which supports talented young sportspeople to achieve their dreams. Local businesses wanting to engage with table tennis as a means of supporting a healthier workforce are also being encouraged to contact the Council’s sports development manager, Ian Ford, (email Ian.ford@horsham.gov.uk or call 07764 146338) as part of a wider plan to secure more investment in the sport’s infrastructure in the District. Make recycling your New instructor for strength and New Year’s resolution balance exercise programme

With Christmas trees, wrapping paper and empty boxes to dispose of, January is the busiest time of the year for recycling in West Sussex. Residents recycled 10,000 tonnes of paper and card and 1,700 tonnes of electrical items in the first three months of 2019. This year, people are being reminded which items can be recycled and where to put them. Christmas materials that can be recycled in your home recycling bin include: Christmas cards Cardboard boxes and packaging Plastic pots, tubs, and trays Aluminium foil, cans, pie cases and food trays Bottles (both plastic and glass) Glass jars Wrapping paper (although remember to do a ‘scrunch test’!) Foil and metallic wrapping paper cannot be recycled, but if you’re unsure whether you can recycle other wrapping paper you can do the ‘scrunch test’. If the paper stays scrunched then it’s okay to go in the recycling. If it springs open then unfortunately it can’t be recycled. Real Christmas trees can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS) and placed in with the garden waste to ensure it is recycled into compost. If you live in Adur, Arun, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham or Worthing areas, and subscribe to a garden waste collection, you can place your real Christmas tree out for collection. In Mid Sussex, you can take your real Christmas tree to a designated collection point for recycling. For more information, please check with your local

district or borough council. Old electrical and electronic items including tablets, cameras and Christmas lights can also all be recycled free of charge at one of the sites. Please ensure they are placed in the designated area rather than in with general rubbish. There is also a designated bin for recycling batteries at the HWRS, as these can cause fires if put in with general waste. Unwanted toys and clothing can be donated to charity or taken to your nearest HWRS for reuse or recycling. Residents are reminded that they will now need to show ID for example a driving licence or utility bill – when visiting any of the HWRSs in West Sussex. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Christmas cards and wrapping paper can typically be put in your home recycling bins, so long as it passes the scrunch test, along with many other items. You can help us by making sure your recycling is kept clean, dry and loose. Gill Constable has joined the Health and Wellbeing team with a wealth of experience in delivering group exercise programmes and a specialist LaterLife qualification in postural stability instruction. The Strong & Steady programme includes a free eight week course at The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath, along with a workshop, new for 2020, that can be taken to rural locations throughout Horsham District. The aim of programme is to improve strength, balance, coordination and flexibility and main-

tain people’s independence. It is suitable for absolute beginners as well as those who are prone to tripping or stumbling. Gardening is well known to be good for body and soul – it keeps you physically active and just being outdoors is a natural mood booster that also provides your body with vital doses of sunlight and vitamin D. Creating your own health and wellbeing garden can be as easy as making a natural snug that can be a place in your existing outdoor space for meditation and mindfulness. Dotting focal points around the garden can also help contemplation – clumps of lavender, grasses swaying in the breeze or zen like trees such as Japanese maples. By making a few simple changes you can easily transform any garden into a relaxing space. Step one is to make sure that you have a quiet corner away from all of the hustle and bustle of everyday life where you can sit and simply enjoy the garden. Try to avoid having straight paths and walls where possible as these can bring a feeling of regimentation to your space, instead use meandering paths, curved paving and foliage instead of

fences which gives a more natural feel. Make sure you have a variety of fragrant plants. Lavender is ideal as it attracts butterflies and bees – a joy to watch and good for pollinating your garden. Herbs such as mint, rosemary, thyme and sage are also a good choice. Even the smallest of outside space – a front garden or balcony - can accommodate a pot of herbs, which always smell strongest at dusk. Research has shown that brightly coloured flowers are brilliant for lifting the mood so plant some vibrant reds, yellows and oranges as well as cooler whites and blues that are good for relaxation. Finally, think about a water feature. If the constant trickle of a fountain doesn’t work for you then something calmer such as a pond, or small container pond, is a great place to relax and reflect. Whilst planning your peaceful retreat, don’t forget the rest of the garden this month. As the RHS says, January might be the middle of winter but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow. Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. Enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather. Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden. Jobs for this month should include: Cleaning pots and greenhouses ready for spring Dispersing worm casts in lawns Planning your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season Putting out food and water for birds Digging over plots and beds that have not been dug already.

Declutter with Purpose for the New Year at The Entertainer

The Entertainer, the fastestgrowing, family owned high street toy retailer in the UK, has announced the return of its hugely successful initiative, The Big Toy Re-homing campaign, in partnership with The Salvation Army. The campaign has been running across all The Entertainer’s 172 stores since Thursday 2 January – calling on families to take part in a New Year’s clear out, giving toys at the bottom of the toy box a chance to bring smiles to new faces. The initiative aims to reduce the number of toys that could find their way into landfill by giving toys no longer played with a new lease of life, whilst aiming to support the 4.1M* underprivileged children living in poverty across the country, via The Salvation Army. Thanks to generous donations from across the country in June and September 2019, The Entertainer re-homed an incredible 16,000 toys, weighing in excess of 10,500 kilos, which could have found its way into landfill. Birthplace of The Entertainer, Amersham generated the most donations with an inspir-

ing total of 481 toys donated in September, Basingstoke followed with 461 toys and Sutton Coldfield saved 230 toys from ending up in landfill. Gary Grant, Founder and Executive Chairman of The Entertainer, said: “We are incredibly proud to announce the return of The Big Toy Re-homing campaign alongside The Salvation Army. It has been especially brilliant to receive feedback from those both on the receiving end of donations and kind families donating, with words of encouragement and praise for the campaign. Business Martin Read Hats off to Horsham lady Tracey Allen, awarded a prestigious and much valued MBE in the recently announced New Years Honours list. Business woman Tracey was educated at Horsham High School for Girls – now Tanbridge House – and served under leaders John Smith, Neil Kinnock and Tony Blair at Labour Party HQ. Then, after pursuing other avenues, she returned to the Westminster environment to work for General Secretary Iain McNicol, now Lord McNicol of West Kilbride, politics being very

much the business of the household, Tracey’s husband Phil subsequently becoming an MP and rising to Minister of State. Tracey cut her teeth beavering away on the development of Covent Garden Market, and after her talents and promise were spotted by her boss, she was encouraged to enrol at college, where she sailed through with a business degree. The MBE award cited both Tracey’s services to politics and her charity projects, Tracey telling the District Post: “I am so proud to have received this acknowledgement of my work and volunteering for the Labour Party and will be more than thrilled if I am lucky enough to be presented to the Queen again - I was very fortunate to meet her majesty at the opening of the Jubilee Market in Covent Garden in 1987, an event I organised, and I always wondered if she might remember me!” And, understandably, Tracey’s achievement has created enormous excitement in the family – especially for parents Phillip and Shirley, long term Horsham residents, Phillip, former Horsham Rugby Club Captain, saying: “Tracey works so hard, so it is wonderful that all of her efforts have been recognised, but the award came as a shock out of the blue and she was sworn to secrecy! We’re now looking forward to learning the date of the investiture – what a day that will be for the family!”

St Catherine’s Hospice is getting ready to heat up Horsham with its second ever Firewalk! Now, the local charity is looking for brave soles to come forward and face the flames to raise funds for terminally ill people in their community. St Catherine’s is looking for 100 or more fearless fundraisers to put their bravery to the test and walk barefoot across 15 feet of red hot embers. We’ve seen out 2019 and welcomed in the New Year – this is the time for resolutions! So, come on – Horsham Rugby Football Club invites women (age 17 and above) to unleash their inner warrior and take part in free rugby fitness sessions. Step out of your comfort zone and take on a fresh challenge in the form of a sport you might not have considered trying before – rugby. Go ahead Horsham Rugby Football Club is offering women and girls the opportunity to change up their usual workout routine, with fun, free, fitness-based rugby sessions, “Warrior Camps”. No special equipment is needed – just come along in trainers and your normal keep fit clothes. The continuing success and popularity of the Warrior Camps over the past three years has seen 18,000 women and girls find their love of rugby. So, England Rugby has decided to increase their Warrior Camp offering to meet the popular demand for more sessions, with Warrior Camps at Horsham RFC over five consecutive weekends – FROM THIS SATURDAY, JANUARY 11th - to 8th February to help build real momentum in your New Year fitness regime whilst enjoying even more of an opportunity to experience rugby. The Warrior Camps offer women a free opportunity to meet like-minded people and build friendships with women who share a passion to get fit and experience rugby. Hat-trick hero Vince has artillery to down H.A.C

Saturday January 4 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 55- 24 Dartfordians Rugby Richard Ordidge Horsham began the New Year in style, entertaining the large crowd by completing the double over H.A.C. with an impressive victory, consolidating their hold on eighth place with their third successive win – an eight try romp – to look increasingly comfortable in this league. The Honourable Artillery Company based in the heart of the City of London, has an illustrious history, with its teams originally comprising solely members of the Regiment. They finished fifth in London 1 North last year but are having a difficult season, playing sides south of the River Thames following league reorganisation. Horsham started well with strong possession and a penalty converted by Joe Blake. Great linking between former Colts combination of Aaron Linfield and Blake then saw tremendous strength from Vince Everitt to hold off several tacklers to run in and score from 40 metres. Then, Everitt finish well again for his second try with a fine line off a ruck, well converted by Blake, to lead 15-0 afer 10 minutes. Lack of concentration conceded a try, but Horsham soon bounced back with great ball retention across the pitch, finished by Jonny Goward and maximised by Blake again. Missed tackles in the centres saw H.A.C. score a second try, but Horsham

responded on the stroke of half time with another try, Johnny Ordidge, prominent with his carries, offloading to Marcus Condon to secure the four try bonus point, and, with Blake’s conversion, Horsham went into the break leading 29-10.

We had a wobble for 20 minutes, attributable to fitness and enforced changes due to knocks, but having weathered that storm, finished strongly to record a pleasing bonus point win Horsham restarted strongly, great retention eventually finding Declan Nwachukwu to finish, before Blake broke through to score and convert, putting the game beyond H.A.C. at 41-10. Ringing the changes to bring on the bench, Horsham went 25 minutes without adding to their score. Meanwhile, with Horsham going off the boil, suffering an injury to Blake and picking up yellow cards, reducing their playing contingent, H.A.C. added two further scores to secure their own four try bonus point. But, restored to their full compliment, Horsham finished the half vigorously, with Everitt completing his hat-trick following a

Delighted Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “A pleasing return to league action, starting at incredible pace and making very few mistakes, belying any rustiness, which, combined with the ball retention, meant we pressured H.A.C. from the start. It was pleasing to see the players deliver on their hard work in training. We had a wobble for 20 minutes, attributable to fitness and enforced changes due to knocks, but having weathered that storm, finished strongly to record a pleasing bonus point win - our first result over 50 points this season. Again the front row was excellent, consistently getting us on the front foot. Our young half backs were impressive with speed of service and running threat throughout and in Joe Blake, we had another contender for Man of the Match until his unfortunate knock. Johnny Ordidge was a handful all afternoon offering another carrying option and the threat posed by the outside backs was clearly shown at every opportunity. With the back row everywhere today, the man of match was eventually awarded to Vince Everitt for his all-round performance capped off with 3 excellent tries. On Saturday we have a tough away match to Cobham - one of the form teams in the league - and we’ll need to be at our best to get a result. On the HAC performance, it promises to be an exciting game!”

Wednesday January 1 2020 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 3-0 Lewes Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter In front of an enthusiastic, near 1,000 crowd, Horsham got the New Year off to the best possible start with a strong home league win against struggling Lewes, whom they had previously beaten 2-0 at the Dripping Pan in scorching late August Bank Holiday weather. With leaders Folkestone and second-placed Worthing both winning, the Hornets needed to do likewise to maintain their third spot in the table after coming a cropper against Worthing at the coast on Boxing Day. Horsham started quietly, but went on to lead comfortably at the break, from when the result was never in

serious doubt. The first opportunity came when Charlie Harris’ free kick scythed through the defence, only to be stopped by Lewes keeper Nathan Stroomberg. However, in the 12th minute, Horsham went in front when Stroomberg was well beaten by unmarked Joe Shelley’s dynamic header from another Harris set piece. Although Horsham had to be alert to prevent Lewes equalising, the defence keeping out Alex Malins’ attempt to maximise both a cross and the rebound, Hornets’ skipper Jack Brivio maintained pressure with a rocket that screamed past the post, before Taurean Roberts’ blast was pushed over by the busy Stroomberg. Kayne Diedrick-Roberts then attempted to get Lewes back on equal terms, but his shot was blocked by Will Miles – ahead of the moment of the match, the moment of any match, or season - Rob O‘Toole treating spectators to a superb goal from a seemingly impossible position just

before half time, with an incredible gravity-defying bicycle kick from just inside the box. Shelley almost gave Horsham a three goal cushion, but his header from Roberts’ cross was just too aerial, but, leading 2-0 at the break, Horsham were in an enviably strong position. And, before the hour mark, the outcome was put beyond all possible doubt when another pin point Harris free kick found Brivio in open space to unleash a powerful header into the net. With Lewes on the ropes, Harris headed over, yet the visitors did have the possibility of a consolation goal, but Captain Frankie Chappell nodded sub Jason Dawson’s supply well adrift. With Horsham just needing to close the game down, chances arose at either end, Harris’s effort sliding past the goal and a late Lewes corner coming and going without undue alarm, the result having been a foregone conclusion from much earlier in the contest.

Horsham YMCA notched up a much needed win – their first success in five matches – in a competitive encounter against basement side Loxwood at Gorings Mead last Saturday. In the opening minutes there was a worrying mix up in the YM defence, but they soon recovered, Sam Lemon crossing to Matt Daniel, only for the centre forward to head wide. Daniel, though, soon made amends after Dean Carden had put new signing Johden de Meyer through against his former club. The debutant was thwarted by the crossbar, but the ball rebounded for Daniel to head home. YM kept pressing, but opportunities came and went, Loxwood keeper Rob East denying Daniel just beyond the mid point of the half. Then, Loxwood equalised when a cross from the left hit the far post and bounced in, with Sam Karl credited. A subsequent YM free kick was stopped by East, the score remaining 1-1 at the break. YM retook the lead early in the second half when Tony

Nwachukwu drove through up the right to shoot against the post, Ash Wadhams – who had been brought on after Lemon had sustained a first half injury induced by some robust tackles - being on hand to tap in. And, with around half an hour to play, YM went further ahead, when Dean Carden converted a penalty after Nwachukwu had been brought down. Loxwood supporters protested vehemently, claiming that the foul was committed outside the area, but the goal stood. To their credit, despite still being in search of their first win of the season, Loxwood mounted a series of spirited attacks, but YM successfully closed down the game ensuring three most welcome points. However, the game was played in a good spirit with both teams working hard on a difficult surface. Heath welcomed back Michael Chester in goal, the unavailable Jamie Wanstall being replaced by Ollie Joells - the only changes from the line-up that came close to victory at YMCA the previous week. Alfold’s Jack Nourse had the first shot, easily covered by

Chester. Jake Hull then wriggled his way behind the Alfold defence to cross, but Max Howell’s strike was just two high. Next, Chester had to be alert to beat Kelvin Lucas to a through ball, but Alfold opened the scoring when ex Bear Tiago Andrade fed Adrian Todd to drill a fine finish into the far bottom corner. Andrade put a free kick over the bar then Howell’s raking run ended in a shot which Alex Harris spilled, for another former Bear - Andy Howard - to tidy up the rebound. Heath’s best chance of the half came when Jamie Taylor intercepted an Alfold pass and rounded Harris but as the angle narrowed, he fired against the bar. The half ending with Heath trailing by the single goal after Watts had shot straight at Harris and Lucas fired into the side netting. Then, as an afterthought, Todd was summoned and given a red card for bringing down Taylor even though the penalty had not materialised, baffling both dugouts. Heath, though, hit back, a corner resulting in Waddingham shooting over the bar. Jake Hull who had toiled during the first

half in the boggiest part of the pitch was then replaced by Archie Goddard who almost immediately danced into the box to be brought down by Powell. The confident 17 year old grabbed the ball and sent Harris the wrong way from the spot to equalise with his second goal in senior football. Alfold retaliated, Chester having to scramble Howard’s back header away for a corner. With the game heading for a quiet draw, Alfie Jones received a red card for treading on Andrade’s leg, yet, now down to nine men, Heath were still going for the winner and Steve Painter kept two strikers up when many teams would have tried to shut up shop so close to the end of the game, Taylor bringing a fine diving save from Harris. Chester then came right to the edge of his area to swallow up Bold’s pass, and the drama continued with a

dangerous cross missing everyone in front of the Heath goal, to fall for Martyn Flack beyond the far post. He fed Taylor on half way, who skipped past Powell and squared the ball to Goddard who beat Harris and Jacques’ efforts to keep it out with Taylor following up to make sure. Leading for the first time, Heath dropped Taylor back into midfield and for the rest of stoppage time kept feeding Goddard to take the ball right up the home side’s corner flag, the final whistle giving Heath a hard earned win. Heath’s spirit and determination added to the impact of Goddard made the real difference. On Saturday Heath – now 13th in the table - return home to welcome 8th-placed Crawley Down Gatwick, whom they beat 2-1 in August’s corresponding away fixture.

Tuesday January 7 - Sussex Senior Cup – Quarter Final Horsham 2-3 Worthing Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s inability to get beyond the Quarter Final stage in the prestigious Sussex Cup for almost ten years came back to haunt them at their Camping World Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Hornets led 2-0 at the break and seemed set to avenge their 3-0 away league defeat to the high-flying Worthing visitors on Boxing Day, only for three second half goals to rob them of the possibility of an appearance at Brighton & Hove Albion’s Amex Stadium. Played in persistent rain almost throughout, the game started with Horsham calling the shots, Kieran Lavery twice testing the

Worthing defence – first drawing out a good save from Carl Rushworth and then seeing his second effort put off for a corner after being set up by Rob O’Toole. And, sustained pressure soon paid off, when an excellent Horsham team build up enabled penetration of the defence, an O’Toole corkscrew propelling the ball into the far corner to give Horsham the lead after seven minutes. However, Worthing responded

immediately and the Hornets were relieved when Callum Kealy’s shot whistled just over. Charlie Harris then frightened the visitors with a blast just past the post. With Worthing struggling to put together further goal scoring chances, Harris and O’Toole were just unable to maximise successive opportunities. Worthing’s Ollie Pearce did manage to unleash a strong shot – mercifully wayward, until, in a moment of magic, Horsham went two up. George Bentley cleared the ball up field, and when it reached midfielder Lea Dawson, he fired in a rocket, leaving Rushworth rooted. With 20 minutes of the first half still to play, Horsham might promptly have gone even further ahead, but for Rushworth’s swift recovery before a Taurean Roberts/O’Toole foray lost steam. Galvanised, Worthing put Horsham under the cosh for the final five minutes of the half, the enterprising Pearce running through to no avail, until Bentley thwarted Pattenden with a punched clearance and then blocked further danger from Perace. While Horsham were somewhat relieved to hear the half time whistle, they were more than pleased with their two goal advantage. Resuming with Pamment replacing the injured O’Toole, the sub was soon in action, and Worthing’s Darren Budd shot came to nothing, as did an attempt from Harris. Then, after Horsham scrambled the ball away, follow-

ing claims that it had crossed the line and been handballed, play was waved on for Pamment to be denied by Rushworth. Pamment then fired just wide, before with Horsham looking likely to get the next goal, Sparks was sanctioned for an infringement in the box, Pearce converting coolly the penalty to claw back a goal for Worthing. The visitors might then have equalised, but Bentley pushed away Pearce’s incursion. A Horsham free kick came and went, and action continued at either end, with heartbreak soon following when Bentley was only able to parry the ball, Peace equalising from close quarters. Suddenly, the game was on the line, Horsham retaliating with a Roberts launch brilliantly averted by Rushworth. Counterpart Bentley then comfortably gathered a speculative long range effort from Aguiar, before, amid calls for a foul - and then offside against Myles-Meekums – play continued with disastrous consequences, Myles-Meekums delivering the killer blow with an unstoppable close quarter strike. Three Worthing goals had come in 19 minutes and, while there was still time for Horsham to threaten to upset Worthing’s euphoria, a Pamment goal was ruled offside and then Dawson found the top of the net. Worthing had somehow snatched the game, leaving Horsham supporters desperately disappointed.

Horsham remain third despite notching up their third consecutive away defeat – against Hornchurch, whom Horsham had beaten 1-0 at home in October – the Essex side being one spot below the Hornets in the table, but with three games in hand. The Hornets went ahead, with a goal mid way through the first half, but Hornchurch soon equalised, following up with their second half decider. And, Horsham were somewhat fortunate to survive a major early

scare when a corner was headed in by Chris Dickson, only to be seemingly harshly overruled by a linesman’s decision. Horsham keeper George Bentley was then in the thick of the action – first to negate a Matt Johnson header and then to catch a cross from Dickson. But, after keeping the hosts at bay, Horsham opened the scoring when Greg Cundle found the net for the first time for the club with an excellent individual goal, firing into the far corner at the end of a solo run. The lead was, though, short-lived – Hornchurch drawing level after just four minutes when Ricky Hayles headed home Ronnie Winn’s corner, the score remaining 1-1 at the break Bentley had to be at his best to pull of a superb save on the restart, palming the ball away,

when Hornchurch sub Marvin Morgan unfurled a dynamic header. Morgan then put Horsham under pressure again, but the danger was averted, before Bentley had to clear another of the player’s headers. Frustrations over-spilled culminating in cautions after some jostling, then, before normality had entirely returned, Horsham were undone by a further Hornchurch corner routine, Dickson converting another well-taken set piece. The best part of half an hour remained, but the attacks that Horsham were able to mount were blunted by disciplined home defending, a late chance to force a draw evaporated when Will Miles’ long range drive was saved by Hornchurch keeper Joe Wright without undue difficulty.
