Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

Community step up to the Climate Crisis

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter

Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

their cowboy style interiors specialise in authentic style American wild west dishes – notably featuring grills, ribs and steaks and the Horsham outlet opened some 25 years ago on the site of the former Hop Picker pub, which had in turn replaced an older hostelry – The White Hart. Following statements that the owners of the restaurant have found trading on the site a

challenge due to its location away from the centre of Horsham, causing them to look at possible alternative locations to accommodate the restaurant more centrally, planning application DC/19/1527 has been submitted to Horsham District Council to demolish the restaurant and erect a block of flats on the land. The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

ers in the vicinity, concern being expressed regarding the intended loss of the Smith & Western facility from its present position, and further parking in an area of busy, narrow roads with tight corners. The intended size of the new building also raised worries over potential loss of privacy, along with the additional demand it might place on services.

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Organisers Horsham District Council would like to thank all of their partners and sponsors who worked together to make the event happen including; Oddballs Car Club, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Guildford Harley Davidson, Horsham JEEP, Food Rocks and Coden Events, Corvette Club UK, Mid-Surrey Roadsters, Motion Picture Motors, Berkeley Homes, Freeman Brothers, Sussex Thunder AFC, Super Hero Parties, The Almost Elvis Band, Blueprint Blues Brothers, The Rec Rooms, The Crown and all of the musicians and performers, the event traders and food concessions.

Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Welland Medical were thrilled to win the Bee Kind heart. Chris Primett, Managing Director, said, “St. Catherine’s has been our company’s charity for over 10 years and many of our employees have a special connection with their unique work. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he

cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” Matt Turner was also a winning bidder of two hearts – Keepsake and Abstract Love. He said “I’m an art enthusiast so I was very keen to own some of these amazing works of art. My wife was fan of Keepsake; we’ve only been married a year and I wanted to treat her. I chose Abstract Love as it will look fantastic in the office.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. Each of the hearts had its own story to tell and I’m thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.” Hannah Liles, St Catherine’s

At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a

pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of

recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers

Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District.

SEP

“The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success

Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance.

Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. spent designing products to help improve the lives of others.

A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe.

The legacy of 2019’s Horsham District Year of Culture tees up an even more diverse set of events that seek to attract visitors from every sector of the community, engaging with increasing numbers of groups and local businesses. The primary purpose of the Council’s support is the economic bonus gained from increased footfall and publicity for the town, whilst enabling many business partners to use the town to achieve their own objectives, generating mutual benefits along the way. A central feature of this year’s events programme will see an increasing focus on sustainability in terms of both content and awareness of the core issues, with the Council working closely with local partners in the field including Kinder Living, Sussex Green Living and others. Individual event highlights this year include Horsham’s starring role in the national programme of Good Friday Passion Plays entitled ‘One Good Friday 2020’ led by Horsham Churches Together and a reenergised town wide music festival on Easter Monday called ‘Horsham Sounds’ led by a consortium of community partners. For the first May bank holiday of the year, there will be a full weekend of entertainment. As part of a national celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe Horsham will be hosting ‘Horsham’s VE75 Weekend’, including The Broadwood Day of Dance and Horsham’s Bus Rally. Friday’s VE Bank Holiday on 8 May gives a one off opportunity for the whole community to come together to remember the bittersweet joy of peace felt on 8 May 1945. Already working with QM Studios and Age UK, Horsham District Council are inviting more community groups to step forward to play a part in a special day which

Following their successful introduction in 2019 as part of the Year of Culture, the Spanish festival ‘Feria de Horsham’ returns as does an extension of the Caribbean Day to include Latin America called ‘Carnivale Horsham’ in 2020. The ever popular French Fest will also return. Later in the year, September’s food and drink weekend returns with Saturday’s ‘The New Big Nibble’, with an increased emphasis on it being a local food show as well as a market place. Sunday’s Little Nibble is being rebranded as ‘The Future Food Show’ with all sorts of healthy and alternative food options on display. Horsham AmeriCARna is set to take over the town centre and Hop Oast Park & Ride with more ‘cruise throughs’ by a greater variety of vehicles. Plans for Christmas 2020 are to be confirmed and will be subject to evaluations of 2019’s activities and 2020’s available resources. These highlights are in addition to an amazing variety of other events, markets, bandstand concerts, town trails, exhibitions and street entertainment that all go on throughout the year. Commenting on the events programme for 2020, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am delighted that we are set to welcome such a broad scope of events and activities to Horsham for 2020. It is good to see so many popular ones making a return, but I am also really pleased that we will be hosting so many new events which are making their debuts this year. “More than ever, I believe we have something that will appeal to everybody in our new programme. Not only do the events create an extremely engaging experience for residents and visitors of all ages, but they are also key to supporting local businesses and traders who benefit so greatly from being able to showcase their product and services to larger audiences of people. “Our thanks go out in advance to the many partners we will be working with to help make this impressive programme happen. “I would encourage as many of you as possible to come along and enjoy what is set to be an amazing year for events and entertainments.” One event that is not making a return is Horsham Piazza Italia. This event first ran in 2006 over two days with 12 Ferraris each day. Over time the event grew to a peak at Piazza Italia X in 2016 with displays of some 101 Ferraris, bandstand and balcony Romeo & Juliet performances, Gladiators, Granny Tourismo antics, Italian Job Mini cavalcades and many top quality operatic arias along the way. Unfortunately, many of the voluntary and commercial partners that made up so much of the content of this event are not now available. This has led to the event organisers taking the decision to terminate the event while it retains such a great reputation, allowing available resources to focus on a wider town programme with the many new events.

48 new affordable homes in the centre of Horsham given the green light by Council The site for the proposed homes, at Page Court in Livingston Road just off New Street in the town, is currently owned by housing association Saxon Weald. Saxon Weald wants to demolish the existing building and replace it with 40 flats in addition to eight terraced houses fronting onto Park Terrace East. The existing accommodation, which was built in the 1970s is now showing signs of age, and comprises a residential block of 42 bed-sit units with shared bathroom facilities, and three self-contained bungalows. All units have most recently been occupied by older residents, but are now largely unoccupied. Members of the Council’s Planning Committee (North) approved the application on 3 December 2019. A further site in Rudgwick was approved by Planning Committee (North) on 7 December for a

further 6 houses. Commenting on the proposed scheme, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “I am delighted that we are now in a position to upgrade this accommodation to provide much needed affordable homes for local people in housing need. “The development will enable 48 families and individuals to be appropriately housed in a central and convenient town centre location. “This is a great example of the successful collaborative work the Council achieves with the Horsham based housing association Saxon Weald, enabling us to deliver a high number of affordable homes across the District year on year.” The proposed Page Court redevelopment is just one of four affordable homes sites which will deliver in total some 84

rented homes for the Horsham District. The mix of homes will see a range from one bedroom flats to three bedroomed houses to satisfy varying housing needs. The other sites already approved for development are located in Bennetts Road and Bleinheim Road in Horsham. These affordable rented units will greatly help reduce the number of local households on the Horsham Housing Register with an identified housing need.

Residents are being given the chance to question the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner, Katy Bourne

Questions can be about any policy issue relating to policing in Sussex as long as they avoid mentioning operational matters or live cases. Written questions should be submitted by 12 noon on Friday 17 January. The Commissioner will then respond during the next meeting of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel on Friday 31 January. Bill Bentley, Chairman of the Sussex Police and Crime Panel, said: “Do you have a question about how your money is to be spent on policing in West Sussex? Would you like to know more about the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner’s role? This is a great opportunity to put your questions to Katy Bourne. “Make sure you come along to

the meeting next month to hear the answers in person.” The main items on the agenda include the Police Crime Commissioner’s proposed precept which is the portion of council tax which goes to Sussex Police and the Estate’s Strategy. Questions about other issues are also welcomed providing they fall within the Commissioner’s responsibility. Questions can be submitted in writing to pcp@westsussex.gov. uk or by telephoning 0330 222 2542. The meeting will be held at County Hall, Lewes, starting at 10.30am. yes that’s right folks,Wednesday 15 January saw the ever celebrated ‘National Pothole Day’ ahem! Joking aside Highways teams continue to work hard, repairing potholes across the county. In 2019 to 2020, West Sussex Highways repaired 18,514 – that’s an average of about 350 every week. Fixing significantly-sized potholes is done within 28 days, or sooner if the problem is severe. However, repairs are only part of the picture: we also: resurface whole/large sections of roads, removing all the surface and replacing with a new one on top; micro-surface, where a layer of asphalt emulsion is blended

with finely-crushed stone to seal the road surface and stop further deterioration use surface dressing, spraying the road with bitumen binder, followed by a layer of stone chippings which are then rolled in, sealing the road and restoring its skid-resisting properties All three methods contribute to our pothole prevention strategy and in 2019 to 2020, we invested a total of £8.9 million treating 806,000m2 of carriageway using these three methods – that’s the equivalent of nearly 60 miles of road. Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Finance, Cllr Ray Dawe, said: “At a time when the pressure on local authority finances remains as great as ever, it is commendable that as a result of prudent financial planning over a number of years, the Council is delivering as strong a budget as this, while still delivering its services and investing in future projects that will improve our ongoing efficiency. “With councils facing reduced Government financial support and in a period with a high degree of national economic and political uncertainty, we have maintained our sound financial position. “We shall be working to continue to deliver our plans to maintain this position through a combination of measures such as income generation and digital transformation.” The proposals, if supported, will be recommended to full Council on 12 February 2020

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “I am really pleased that we have almost reached the stage where we can start our public consultation. “This review will help us to ensure that our Local Plan will remain the platform for planning decisions from now until 2036. “One of the aims of a new Plan is to set out how the hous-

We also need to consider how we provide local, well-paid jobs for our people. “We want to hear people’s views on the draft Local Plan and I would now urge as many of you as possible to register on our website for regular updates and news, and to enable you to give your feedback on the options once the consultation starts on 17 February.” There will be a number of opportunities to get involved during the preparation of the Horsham District Local Plan 2019-2036. Those who wish to receive updates, comment on the plan and give their feedback during the first consultation stage on the first complete draft of the Local Plan will need to register at www.horsham.gov.uk/localplanreview

At a Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting next week (23 January), councillors will look to agree the 2020/21 revenue and capital budgets following receipt of the provisional financial settlement from the Government on 20 December 2019. The Council is set to recommend a budget that will generate a surplus, which will help towards funding future transformation to maximise efficiency and effectiveness. During the next financial year, HDC is aiming to deliver a £13.3m capital programme, while the level of council tax proposed remains the lowest in West-Sussex and is in the lowest quartile nationally. The investment programme is set to include a broad range of initiatives ranging from: Provision of more much needed affordable housing for the District Introduction of a range of schemes as part of a drive to reduce our carbon footprint and become carbon neutral in line with national targets Investment in improved digital technology to make it easier for our residents and businesses to deal with us online when they need to. Councillors at the meeting will also review the Medium Term Financial Strategy 2020-24 in the light of any updated infor-

The Horsham District Local Plan 2019 – 2036 will help the Council to: Shape where developments can take place in the District to minimise their effect on the environment and ensure the provision of appropriate transport links Provide for a variety of homes to meet local needs, built to a standard that is at least 19% above the 2010 building standards regulations Create policies that address the

This has been happening since mid-November and the areas that are mainly being targeted at this time are south of Harwood Road and north of Brighton Road. The vehicles that are of interest are mainly Toyota’s and Honda’s, however other vehicles and other areas of Horsham have also been

The Police have commented on their social media platforms that they will do everything they can to prevent this activity and would like to reassure vehicle owners that they have investigated all lines of enquiry of the reports they have received so far. Horsham Police would also like to remind anyone to report any suspicious activity and to park vehicles close to any CCTV and in well-lit areas.

Representations invited on the Soft Sand Review of the West Sussex Joint Minerals Local Plan

West Sussex County Council and the South Downs National Park Authority are asking for views on a revised soft sand strategy for the Joint Minerals Local Plan. A new soft sand quarry outside the National Park, at Ham Farm near Steyning is proposed for allocation. There are also two proposed extensions to existing soft sand quarries within the South Downs National Park at Chantry Lane (near Storrington) and West Heath (near Rogate). Stakeholders and members of the public are being asked for their

representations on the soundness and legal and procedural compliance of the review, from now until 2 March 2020. The Soft Sand Review considers the need for soft sand during the period to 2033, the supply strategy and the identification of potential extraction sites. ‘Soft sand’ (also known as ‘building sand’) is generally finegrained, relatively soft textured, free-flowing in nature, and used in mortar. Its properties are different to the ‘sharp sand’ extracted in the County, which is rough, angular, and used predominantly in

concrete. Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “As a mineral planning authority, West Sussex County Council is required to plan for a steady and adequate supply of minerals, including soft sand. “We have taken account of the comments that we received earlier this year on the issues and options, and I would now encourage people to take this opportunity to make their representations on the review. Tim Slaney, Director of Planning at the South Downs National Park Authority, said: “The revised strategy and its potential impact on the South Downs National Park have been carefully considered in the context of the National Park’s purposes and duty and the Inspector’s comments on the Joint Minerals Local Plan. For further information contact: Planning Services, West Sussex County Council, County Hall, Chichester, PO19 1RH; call 01243 642118 or email mwdf@westsussex. gov.uk. Information is also available in libraries and district council offices, as well as at County Hall in Chichester and the South Downs Centre in Midhurst.

came to Sussex 25 years ago, meeting my husband on the second day of my new job. We’re lucky enough to live in the South Downs National Park near Chanctonbury Ring. I work in Horsham as a Reception Class teacher. How did you develop an interest in wildlife photography? My older cousin gave me my first Kodak Instamatic camera. The Christmas present I remember being most excited about though was a copy of David Attenborough’s Life on Earth. My parents enjoyed walking in the Staffordshire and Derbyshire countryside, which sparked a love and respect for nature. It wasn’t until five years ago that I finally treated myself to a ‘proper’ camera and began to look more closely at beautiful Sussex around me. What qualities do you need to be a good photographer? Taking up photography showed me that there is a world of difference between enjoying being in the countryside and truly seeing it. Learning to look closely, appreciating changes in seasons and light and being curious about how wildlife looks through the lens has helped develop my skills. Patience is important, as is a camera that allows control over settings. What equipment do you use? I use a Nikon d7200 DSLR camera with a Sigma 105 macro lens for close up work and a Tamron 100400 telephoto which I picked up second hand. A tripod is useful for low light and landscape work and I always carry a fabric reflector to throw light back onto a subject, which I prefer to flash. What’s your favourite shot? A frosty river sunrise near

Partridge Green which was taken shortly after having my camera and involved a lot of luck. The excitement I felt watching this magical scene unfold is what keeps me going. It won the Sussex Wildlife Trust Photo Competition that year, which gave me a lot of pleasure. What are you trying to communicate with your photographs? Our three children have been lucky to spend time growing up on a farm, surrounded by nature. I love sharing my passion for wildlife with the children at school – we’ve especially enjoyed taking part in The Wildlife Trusts 30 Days Wild each June. Close-up photography appeals because it seems to convey a little of the wonder of being young, seeing tiny treasures for the first time – a slippery earthworm wriggling in your hand or a ladybird tickling your arm. There’s always some surprising new detail to see through a macro lens, though I like to use a shallow depth of field for a dreamier feel. What do you find most challenging to photograph and why? Anything that moves too quickly! I’m happy with still subjects such as wildflowers or resting butterflies, but I have challenged myself this year and captured squirrels on Brownsea Island and dragonflies in flight. I was excited to photograph my first Kingfisher at Warnham Nature reserve this year. Well worth the wait. Where, and when, historically, Would you most have liked to be with a camera? How impressed would my class be with a photo of a T-Rex? As someone who loves photographing insects, the terrifying decline in their numbers makes me wonder how much richer the experience would have been half a century or more ago, and which species our children will still be able to enjoy as adults. It makes the work of the Wildlife Trusts and other ambassadors for nature so important, raising awareness and leading campaigns. It is why I’m so proud to be a member. Has anything unexpected happened with your photography? Nothing quite prepared me for the number of kind passers by offering medical assistance when they see me lying on the ground photographing butterflies or fungi – only waving my camera apologetically has prevented a call to the ambulance service.

Businesses invited to find out about a business improvement district for Horsham Town Earlier 2019 a group of independent business leaders within Horsham formed the Horsham Business Improvement District (BID) Steering group and were successful in securing funding to further develop a BID proposal for Horsham. As such Revive & Thrive has been appointed to help develop the proposal through to ballot in October 2020. Businesses are being invited to come to a special meeting to find out more about what BIDs are, what a BID could do for Horsham and how they can have their say. The meeting, to be held at the Studio at the Capitol, Horsham, on 30th January 2020 from 6.008.00pm, is designed to introduce businesses in Horsham to the opportunities and benefits that a BID could bring, as well as helping them to understand exactly how BIDs work. There are already over 300 BIDs across the UK, largely operating in town and city centres and they deliver a range of projects that support businesses within them, from marketing and events to direct business support and environmental enhancements. A further key feature of BIDs is the collective

voice they provide to business communities in dealing with public sector bodies. BIDs are funded by a small levy, usually between 1% and 2%, charged against the rateable value of commercial business premises and, as they are funded by the businesses that pay into them, businesses vote in a secret ballot on whether or not to adopt them. Businesses vote on the contents of business plans put together after extensive consultations with businesses and, if approved at ballot, most BIDs are operated as independent social enterprise businesses, run by voluntary boards of directors drawn from the business community. The development of the BID is just getting underway in Horsham, with the vote expected to take place in Autumn next year. National BID experts, Revive & Thrive, has been appointed to work with the Steering Group and businesses in the town to bring the BID to fruition. Revive & Thrive Director, Russell Downing, said “We are excited to begin working with the business community in Horsham. We are already impressed

Collyer’s students focus on film careers The established and well known Horsham film production company Silvertip films, recently visited Collyer’s to talk to Media and Film students about production work and potential routes to a career in this competitive industry. Director Geoff Cockwill and producer Michael Watts were impressed by the students interest and passion for film. After explaining their process to get a film made to professional standards, Geoff and Michael took wide ranging questions from students on all aspects of the industry.

Many students stayed behind for a plenary discussion after the main event, quizzing the duo in depth about their routes to their current positions and ways in which students could get their first break into the industry. Collyer’s Head of Media Jonathan Nunns said: “These kind of visits by local professionals are brilliant! They really take creative subjects like Media and Film out of the classroom and into the real world of careers and employment. I think many students found this event an inspiration.”

at the quality of the business offer in the town and are keen to explore ways of making it even better for all those who use it.” To date, the BID has been driven by a steering group drawn from businesses around the town. Steering Group chair, Willie Hamilton, said “we are aware of improvements that BIDs have brought to other towns around us and we are keen to keep Horsham one step ahead of the rest. The best way to do that is for businesses to work together for the benefit of us all.” Businesses should sign up to come along to this free event via an Eventbrite registration page,

Simon Dowe, Interim CEO, for local, independent charity Age UK Horsham District said “We’re delighted to be working with Kreston Reeves again to bring such useful and free information workshops to local people. People who attended the workshops in the last two years have told us just how invaluable it was to speak to a solicitor informally, and for free, about these matters.” Following on from the workshops, during the last week of February and first week of March, Kreston Reeves solicitors are kindly giving their time pro bono and in return for a donation to Age UK Horsham District for up to 20 local people/couples to write/amend their Wills and Lasting Power of Attorneys.

With three to choose from where do we start? Our review of the new East Street Turkish restaurant: Izmir Bar & Grill Davey Pearson

Managing Director

With the sudden appearance of not 1, not 2 but 3 new Turkish restaurants, my wife and I decided to park the January diet/new me new you malarkey and book ourselves a night of kebabs. We settled on Izmir of East Street (the old Strada unit) purely because of its size and thinking as it’s Saturday it would be easier to get a table... Yeah right, fully booked from 7pm onwards, so we opted for an earlier 6pm reservation. On arrival, we were met by a lovely young chap with smouldering eyes, a black suede smoking jacket and polka dot cravat, who showed us to our table on the first floor. Slightly gutted we couldn’t sit downstairs with it’s modern yet traditional decor and lively open kitchen, but we were told they were preparing for 90 diners and didn’t have the space for little old us... should’ve booked earlier was murmured by one of us under our breath... it wasn’t me. Anyhoo upstairs was nice, contemporary with vibrant blue decor, port hole style mirrors and was partitioned into 3 areas by vertical floor to ceiling metal bars. I actually thought the upstairs would be bigger, but it only covers about half the footprint of downstairs... not a very interesting point, but I thought I’d mention it. We were served promptly with our menus; drinks first and obviously, being in a Turkish restaurant, I went straight for the Pardal Czech lager. Well, it was 3.8% and it is January after all (Turkish Efes Pilsner is availble). The wife, a lemonade as per the norm.

The menu is quite extensive and has a large collection of hot and cold starters. The mains are as you would expect, a selection of grilled marinated lamb or chicken dishes from shish, kofte and chops (no doner here I’m afraid). Quick chat with owner Shaz who mentioned all the meat is butchered and marinaded on site. Whilst they have 14 veggie starters, they also have 2 veggie mains which are a mixture of roasted peppers, mushrooms, tomato and aubergine. All mains are served with rice or chips, salad and bread. They have a 8 house specials and 3 fish dishes as well as kids meals and salads. We opted for the combo, lamb and chicken shish with Adana kofte served with salad bread, rice and chips for good measure. We waited less than 5 minutes for our meal to land on our table, which was good as I was absolutely starving since smelling the char grilled lamb as we swooped past the open kitchen on arrival. First impression on presentation was good, the meat looked juicy and a vibrant red from the marinade, I thought it looked like a small portion to start with, but as I worked my way through, I realised my eyes were greedier than my stomach. The lamb shish was very tender and succulent as was the chicken - Personally, I felt the adana kofte was playing second fiddle to the shish, but was delicious all the same. The salad was fresh and well seasoned, and the chilli and mint yogurt sauce accompaniments were very tasty indeed. With the mains demolished, we were presented with the dessert menu which had about 5 or 6 options. We went for the traditional baklava. Served as 3 cushions of sweet pastry around a nice dollop of vanilla ice cream. Not a massive fan of the sweets myself, but the

missus loved it! All in all, we had a wonderful early evening meal. The atmosphere was good, the staff welcoming and attentive, the food top

notch - and we came out full. Total bill with drinks £42.60, not bad in my book, so can happily recommend a visit to Izmir

Turkish Restaurant in East Street Horsham. Keep your eye open for our next meal review coming soon. D&M P

Top tips for beating Blue Monday & completing Dry January According to Wikipedia, Blue Monday is a name given to a day in January claimed to be the most depressing day of the year. The concept was first publicised as part of a 2005 press release from holiday company Sky Travel, which claimed to have calculated the date using an equation. Brits attempting Dry January may struggle more on Blue Monday (January 20) than any other day of the month. A spokesperson for NetVoucherCodes.co.uk said: “There are many different reasons people try do to Dry January, whether it be to help save money, to kickstart a lifestyle change or just as a detox after Christmas. “It’s important to remember the reasons you decided to undertake the challenge and keep these at the forefront of your mind when you feel like you could be tempted to reach for the bottle. “Telling people about it and having their support will mean you’re more likely to do it, as they can hold you to account.”

These are NetVoucherCodes. co.uk‘s tips to help finish Dry January: Tick it off By ticking off each day you stay dry, you’ll be able to see that the end is in sight and it will make the task seem much more manageable. Swap Many bars and restaurant now serve mocktails or alcohol-free versions of drinks such as gin or beer. This means that you can enjoy the taste, and quench the craving, without breaking your resolution. Dry events Just because you’re not drinking this month doesn’t mean you should stay in the house and not socialise. Organising dry events with friends, such as going bowling or a trip to the cinema means that you will spend more quality time with them than you perhaps would on a night out when you’re all a bit inebriated and tipsy. Having these planned means you have something to look forward to, instead of focusing on what you’re missing.

Designated driver By offering to be designated driver, any temptation to drink will be taken away because of your duty. Legally not being able to drink holds you to account a bit more than simply not wanting to. Be kind It is understandable that there may be events throughout January that you really want to drink at, or days where a glass of wine is just needed. Holding yourself to account and beating yourself up over it won’t help, so try and justify it in your head by doing an extra dry day or two at the end of the month into February to make up for it. Plan February If you’re really struggling, put some time and effort into planning the perfect night out in February to celebrate your wellearned first drink of the decade. Make sure your friends are available and tables are booked and it’s the dream night out to look forward to.

Bypassing the Band: Natalie is set to share her slimming secrets!

A slimmer who transformed her life by losing 3.5 stone is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too. Natalie Zevka joined her local Slimming World group in Crawley on 14th January 2019 months after

she was placed on statins for high cholesterol by her GP due to her excess weight….they even suggested she consider a gastric band. Natalie decided to tackle her weight through Slimming World as a last chance to avoid a costly surgery. She loved the warm, friendly welcome she received at her local group and with her consultant’s support lost 3.5 stone and has since come off statins! Now, she has trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Members at the lucky and newly opened Broadbridge Heath group

at Shelley Primary School are getting ready to welcome Natalie as their new Consultant when she takes over on 20 January 2020. The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three. 60.3% of the Horsham’s population is now overweight, and Natalie says her new role has never been more important: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight, but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 3.5st and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost 3.5 stone without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own Consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself, I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their cho-

sen target weight. Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas, and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. “Like a lot of slimmers, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets, but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. Becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people, many of whom have unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school, how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up tradi-

tional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. Everything counts from walking to gardening to washing the car. I love feeling better in myself and so am much healthier! As a Consultant it’s my role to create that warm, supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - it’s going to be great fun!” Like Natalie, Slimming World Consultants are all former members who have lost weight at their local group themselves and groups are set up as micro businesses in the heart of local communities. There are currently around 4,000 Slimming World Consultants across the UK and Ireland running 15,000 groups. Consultants receive training in Slimming World’s healthy eating and physical activity programmes and learn how to use the power of group support to empower members to take control of their own weight loss journey. As self-employed micro-entrepreneurs, Consultants also learn how to build a successful community-based business. Natalie says she can’t wait for the new challenges running her own business will bring. “For me becoming a self-employed franchisee was a great option. I wanted a job that was well paid, flexible and could fit around my busy life/ I wanted to avoid a regular ‘nineto-five’ routine, so launching my own Slimming World group was an ideal option – I feel like I’ve got a brand new career and I can’t wait for my new groups to run now! Amanda Wyman, who runs Slimming World’s Billingshurst group and manages The South Downs Team as a Team Developer, explained: “Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With Natalie’s experience of being a successful Slimming World member and her kind and warm personality and great sense of humour, I just know that she’ll be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight.” Natalie’s Slimming World group will be held at Shelley Primary School, Broadbridge Heath every Monday at 5:30pm from 20 January 2020. For more information or to join Natalie’s group either pop along on 20 January 2020 or call her on 07507 286044. Or for more general information, visit www.slimmingworld. co.uk or call 0344 897 8000

Horsham Ladies ease through to Cup Semi Final Hockey - Sussex Cup Quarter Final Saturday January 11 – Horsham Ladies 4-0 Brighton 2s Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter After enjoying some indoor hockey during the break in Christmas and New Year league fixtures, Horsham Ladies progressed in the Sussex Cup at Christ’s Hospital last Saturday with a strong first half performance. Fran Crossley opened the scoring with a reverse stick dive before Charlie Walder put the Ladies two up with a field goal, popping the ball in

following an excellent team build up. Fran Crossley made it 3-nil when 14 year old Anna Jamieson fed the ball through. Then, Megan Goring put the icing on the cake, enabling Horsham to enjoy the break with a four goal cushion. Fran Crossley told the District Post: “This was a good win for us. Although we took our foot off the gas a bit, we created more chances in the second half but their keeper had a very good game, preventing us from scoring again. On Saturday we’ll be playing Burgess Hill in the Semi Final of the Cup, again at Christ’s Hospital with the afternoon timing to be confirmed.”

Horsham fight back with brave second half display Saturday January 11 – Premier – Division 2 East Wimbledon Men’s 2nd XI 6-1 Horsham 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Men’s 1st XI are in the throes of a most difficult season, of that there is no doubt, but there have been some encouraging signs, some of which re-surfaced last Saturday. Unfortunately, Horsham got off to the worst possible start, conceding a goal within 30 seconds and three within the first eight minutes, with a rout surely beckoning. Wimbledon are top, five points clear with much the best goal scoring and goal difference stats in the league – and, when they came to Horsham in September, they won 10-1, so the portents were not good. But, when Freddie Campbell came on he helped to install a measure of control, giving the team more shape. Yes, two more goals were conceded from short corners, Wimbledon having a really classy drag flicker, for Horsham to trail 5-0 at the break.

But, to their great credit, Horsham re-grouped and, although out-numbered (unbeaten, Wimbledon had a squad of 16, including some First Team squad/bench players, against Horsham’s contingent of 12), the team really toughed it out to draw the second half 1-1, thanks to a superb trademark goal from Joey Humphreys. And, it would have been better if a Horsham penalty flick had not hit the post. To be fair, Wimbledon did miss chances, but Horsham worked really hard and there were some real positives to take forward, and if they play like that against lesser teams in the fixtures to come, then they should not be a stranger to points. Horsham’s young players have had some chastening experiences and they are getting tougher. There is talk of Rob Turnbull returning from Brighton and the possibility of an overseas player joining soon, so perhaps sunnier uplands are approaching. On Saturday Horsham entertain sixth-placed Epsom with a noon pushback at Christ’s Hospital.

Horsham move into the top half of London 1 South on points difference, with their fourth successive win, after an epic 33-26 away victory, completing a pulsating double over Cobham, with an almost identical scoreline to the home encounter. Outstandingly, the Green and Whites came back from 26-12 down, with three converted tries without reply. It was Horsham’s most significant win of the season against an in form Cobham side on a sevenmatch unbeaten run stretching back to October, including the notable scalps of Belsize Park, Camberley and Westcombe Park, taking them to fifth. Kicking at goal proved a major difference, with Cobham missing all four conversion attempts, whereas Harrison Sims converted four of Horsham’s five tries. Yet, Horsham started slowly and conceded penalties at the scrum and at the breakdown, to soon be 6-0 down thanks to two Cobham penalties. Cobham were playing with more fluency and, against the run of play, Declan Nwachukwu, on the counter attack made a powerful break up the left wing, leaving defenders in his path and offloading to Josh Steggles to score. Cobham responded with a good try from a driving line out which they spun wide with great handling to restore an 11-5 lead. Good controlled rugby in the Cobham half

and patience in the red zone saw Jonny Goward score from a pick and go after successive drives, converted for an unlikely Horsham 12-11 lead. Then, a series of Horsham errors enabled three Cobham tries in quick succession – a missed tackle out wide, then flapping at the kick-off led to a break, followed by an exit kick at the start of the second half to be charged down for a soft try, Horsham trailing 26-12 and seemingly out of the game. But, the fight back started Vince Everitt pouncing on a loose ball to score from a messy

We tailed off at the end in the reverse fixture and it’s a great opportunity to gauge our progress since then line-out. With pressure building Everitt scored his second after a several phase attack, both tries converted by Sims to level the scores at 26-26 after 56 minutes, setting up a grand finale. Both sides went hard for the winning try, Horsham’s quality breaching the home defence following a line out with a well worked backs move and a delayed pass from Johnny Ordidge to send through Marcus Condon to score and seal the remarkable 26-33 win. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said: “A

pleasing result against the form team in the league. We were a long way from our best but with injuries sustained in the warm up causing reshuffling, this was understandable. The guys got frustrated early doors with some scrum interpretations and forced play needlessly granting field position to a dangerous Cobham side. This led directly to two charge down tries and a cheap try from a poorly fielded kick, all of which could have been avoided. I was very pleased with the spirit shown to fight back into the game and with Harrison Sims kicking well the extra points secured after each try allowed us to keep in touch and then take the lead. Marcus Condon’s try, 8 minutes from time energised the team for the final defensive stand and a pleasing five points on the road. “Vince Everitt, Jamie Redmayne, Jordan Smith, Will Grief and Sam Johnson all had strong games and Johnny Ordidge carried hard all afternoon as did Ciaran Preston. Harrison Sims, kicked well from hand and from the tee and made telling breaks throughout. Man of the Match however went to Dan Cass for his physical defence, and big carries throughout - all whilst dominating his opponent on both sides of the scrum for the full 80 minutes. “Next week we have a big home game against promotion hopefuls Medway. We tailed off at the end in the reverse fixture and it’s a great opportunity to gauge our progress since then.” Horsham Lions also won away at Cobham Seconds – 41-28 - to remain top of the Surrey Premiership.

Saturday January 11 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 1-0 Corinthian-Casuals Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter A penalty a quarter of an our before the end was sufficient to give Horsham all three points against visiting Corinthian-Casuals last Saturday, the Hornets having beaten them 2-1 at Tolworth in October. While a win is always welcome, this was not a game that will dwell too long in the memory, between play off hopeful Horsham and historic Casuals, flirting with relegation - currently with the second lowest goal scoring record in the league. Horsham controlled the first half with almost constant possession, but creating limited scoring opportunities, whereas Casuals mounted very few attacks, leaving Hornets’ keeper George Bentley with little to do. The second half was a more even contest. An early Horsham free kick

resulted in a corner, headed wide by the diving Rob O’Toole, followed by another set piece – blazed over – and a further corner. Charlie Harris was then crunched, the rebound from Joe Shelley’s header being impressively cleared by visiting keeper Danny Bracken, before O’Toole broke through, only to fire across the goal mouth. A rare Casuals foray came to nothing ahead of an unthreatening Horsham free kick from the edge of the area, until, just before the break, Bentley had to run out to punch clear, Ben Checklit almost hitting the corner flag with his subsequent effort and then cork-screwing well wide again, the score remaining goalless at the break. The livelier second half began with an immediate Horsham attack headed wide, but, with Casuals looking far more positive, Mathias Bakare was through and clear, Bentley being forced to save with his feet. Then, Bakare tried again, but was well off target. Suddenly Casuals looked a different team, but Oliver Sitch was unable to connect with a potential supply.

Horsham responded, but Bracken gathered comfortably, skipper Will Miles following up with a speculative distant drive. A Harris strike culminated in a corner, Bracken dropping the ball twice without consequences. Casuals had become more organised and purposeful, yet, at the end of a series of fouls, O’Toole was floored, sub Harry Mills giving Horsham the lead from a well-taken penalty. Casuals rang the changes, but Kevant Serbony’s opportunity of an equaliser fizzled out with his wayward shot, then, in the dying minutes, Coskun Ekim was given a red card for abuse of officials, with just time for O’Toole to head over the resultant free kick, terminating the run of the mill encounter. On Saturday, looking to move on from a hat trick of away losses, Horsham make the short away trip to 20th in the table Merstham, whom they despatched 4-0 at The Camping World Stadium in October. Meanwhile, the Hornets remain third, three points behind Folkestone and five shy of leaders Worthing.

Long term Broadbridge Heath Manager Steve Painter steps down Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Last Saturday Broadbridge Heath lost 3-1 at home to 7th-placed Crawley Down Gatwick and soon afterwards the Club released the following statement: “It is with regret that Broadbridge Heath Football Club announce the resignation of First Team Manager, Steve Painter. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Steve for the significant contribution he has made to the club, both on and off the field. “During his 10 year tenure as

First Team Manager, Steve has worked tirelessly to initially maintain, and then improve all football related activities at the club. This effort provided the platform from which the club secured new, purpose-built facilities as part of the Wickhurst Green development in Broadbridge Heath. His focused dedication to the club is now part of the club’s rich history and we will be forever grateful for his contribution.” The Club celebrated their centenary year with the long-awaited opening of their new ground and began this season well, rising to

fifth in the table, but subsequent results have resulted in Heath currently occupying the 14th spot in the table. Pending appointment of a new Manager, Broadbridge Heath are making interim arrangements, meanwhile, the vacant First Team Manager position is described on the Club website, with details of the job requirements and application process - https:// www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc/news/broadbridgeheath-fc-vacancy-2502562.html On Saturday Heath travel to Lingfield (17th)

The wet pitch at Horley Town’s New Defence ground was not conducive to good passing football, but the sparse crowd was entertained to a competitive game, which, on another day, might have resulted in a share of the spoils for Horsham YMCA. Fourthplaced Horley started more brightly, but YM gradually worked their way into the game with a few chances – and they held off the hosts until the dying stages of the extended first half, until former YM player Alex Barbary was credited with a deflection after the ball had come in from the right. Suggestions of hand ball were over-ruled, YM going into the break a goal down. The second half was very even, Callum Donaghey equalising with a header just before the mid point when a corner arrived at the far post. But, after Horley had hit the bar, with 10 minutes

remaining on the clock, a free kick was headed down by Sub Mario Quiassaca, the ball going in for the deciding goal. YM President Ron Moulding told the District Post: “We had Tom Gilbert, Sam Lemon and Jack Ryder unavailable through injury, but we had a very experienced back line and the team worked hard, with our new signing Johden de Meyer putting in a strong performance, and Aaron Jeal having a good game in goal. Horley is not a bad side, but they’re not unbeatable and I felt we deserved a point today.” On Saturday, 10th placed YM welcome 8th in the table AFC Uckfield Town. This will be the third encounter between the sides this season: in August Uckfield knocked YM out of the RUR Cup 3-1 at Gorings Mead, then, in September, YM won 2-1 in the league at The Oaks. Meanwhile, Lancing is top with 52 points, with Peacehaven & Telscombe 2nd on 46 and Eastbourne Town third (42). At the other end of the table Pagham (18th) has 15 points, Hassocks, in the penultimate berth has 13, Loxwood being currently cemented to the bottom with 6.
