Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

Community step up to the Climate Crisis

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter

Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

SEP

“The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

Following statements that the owners of the restaurant have found trading on the site a

challenge due to its location away from the centre of Horsham, causing them to look at possible alternative locations to accommodate the restaurant more centrally, planning application DC/19/1527 has been submitted to Horsham District Council to demolish the restaurant and erect a block of flats on the land. The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Organisers Horsham District Council would like to thank all of their partners and sponsors who worked together to make the event happen including; Oddballs Car Club, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Guildford Harley Davidson, Horsham JEEP, Food Rocks and Coden Events, Corvette Club UK, Mid-Surrey Roadsters, Motion Picture Motors, Berkeley Homes, Freeman Brothers, Sussex Thunder AFC, Super Hero Parties, The Almost Elvis Band, Blueprint Blues Brothers, The Rec Rooms, The Crown and all of the musicians and performers, the event traders and food concessions.

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Welland Medical were thrilled to win the Bee Kind heart. Chris Primett, Managing Director, said, “St. Catherine’s has been our company’s charity for over 10 years and many of our employees have a special connection with their unique work. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he

spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” Matt Turner was also a winning bidder of two hearts – Keepsake and Abstract Love. He said “I’m an art enthusiast so I was very keen to own some of these amazing works of art. My wife was fan of Keepsake; we’ve only been married a year and I wanted to treat her. I chose Abstract Love as it will look fantastic in the office.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. Each of the hearts had its own story to tell and I’m thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.” Hannah Liles, St Catherine’s

At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a

The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of

recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers

Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District.

Horsham District Council has unleashed a shock proposal to demolish Horsham’s Drill Hall in Denne Road to make way for a block of affordable flats. Councillors were briefed on January 15th and on Thursday (30th) their approval will be sought – at an open meeting at Parkside, Chart Way, starting at 6.00pm - to support construction of a replacement community centre at Highwood Village on the outskirts of Horsham, to which the Council is already committed under the Land West of Horsham Masterplan 2008. In a straw poll conducted by the District Post the demolition proposal was greeted with disbelief – ranging from: “Its not April 1st is it?” to: “What? You’re joking - I thought the Council are supposed to protect the town’s assets.” Other comments included: “I’ve been to loads of enjoyable events at the Drill Hall – it’s an adaptable building in the centre and easy to get to”, and “The Drill Hall is an impressive landmark building. I don’t want to see it go and replaced by another soul-less box, we’ve got plenty of those already.” Another respondent regretted the gradual, but relentless disappearance of iconic Horsham buildings, mentioning the old, bijou Capitol theatre and adjacent medieval buildings and www.visithorsham.co.uk

“The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

their cowboy style interiors specialise in authentic style American wild west dishes – notably featuring grills, ribs and steaks and the Horsham outlet opened some 25 years ago on the site of the former Hop Picker pub, which had in turn replaced an older hostelry – The White Hart.

The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

ers in the vicinity, concern being expressed regarding the intended loss of the Smith & Western facility from its present position, and further parking in an area of busy, narrow roads with tight corners. The intended size of the new building also raised worries over potential loss of privacy, along with the additional demand it might place on services.

Horsham’s iconic AmeriCARna celebration of all things American makes a welcome return on Sunday 29 September, expanding right across the town centre to include the newly redeveloped Piries Place, Park Place and Parkside Council offices. The event is brought to you by Horsham District Council and a variety of partners who have donated their time and talents to help make the day a success. Here’s the line-up of events, sights and exhibits and where to

find them: The Customs and Hot Rods Zone, curated by partners, MidSurrey Roadsters will be displayed in Park Place and Piries Place in addition to East Street and the Market Square. With a brief to build on previous displays, expect to see some of the most exciting street cars in the South East. Look out for vehicle owners offering opportunities to have a photo in their car in return for donations to St. Catherine’s Hospice.

Horsham Park and Horsham Town, West Sussex, UK

In addition to the street cars, visit The Berkeley Homes Pick Up Truck Zone near the St. Catherine’s shop at the Bishopric Stream, for a nostalgic look at many examples of this unique American vehicle style. Classic Cruisers once again take pride of place in the Carfax alongside the Pilgrim Motors. The Classic Muscle UK display will be in Swan Yard and the Horsham JEEP display will be outside the Halifax Building Society. The Classic Corvette Club UK

will be in the Forum supporting their partners The Children’s Trust Supercar Event. Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke, commented on the return of the event: “It’s great news that this popular event is back for its third year. As one of our newer events, it has certainly grown in popularity year on year. “I am particularly pleased that the town’s newly redeveloped area Piries Place and Park Place

are going to be showcasing some of the many cars and bikes on display and also that so many of our local shops, cafes, restaurants and bars are entering into the fun with American themed offers and discounts. “Our thanks go out to the many partners who have worked with us to pull off this event, which I am sure will be a great success. “Please do come along to our last event of the summer and enjoy the spectacle.” Continued on page 2.

Speaking on behalf of the Forum Andrew Cooke said: “The proposal to demolish the Drill Hall contradicts both a key objective and a draft of the Neighbourhood Plan. Residents were very supportive of the need for more community facilities and this is a main element of our vision for the town. That the Council is going to make a decision about such a valuable facility with the minimum of consultation – and informing us only at this late stage in their plans is unbelievable and we invite residents wishing to oppose the demolition to sign the Forum’s petition.” And, there is also the Liberal Democrat ‘Save the Drill Hall’ petition - https://www.horNightingale Road, Horsham

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success

Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance.

Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter

Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he

cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

Continued from front page: “We accept that it may need refurbishment, but this would be an investment in a community facility that benefits the entire town. If we carry on like this, we won’t have anything left for future generations. The Drill Hall should not be knocked down. Council to immediately halt all plans to knock down Drill Hall.” Former HDC Chairman, Councillor Christian Mitchell (Conservative, Holbrook West) also opposes: “It is inappropriate and insensitive to suggest that providing affordable housing on the Drill Hall site should be welcomed as an alternative to this community space. As a council, we should be building and providing for all the different needs for our town and district. Affordable housing is important, but so too are facilities that help a community come together and build social networks. This proposal has no regard for our rich history and the need for preserving and enhancing this historic and valuable community asset. At the briefing, councillors were told that the Drill Hall needs “£1m+” spent on it {mainly} to increase the building’s “thermal performance.” How desperate to use climate emergency as a

reason to flatten our community asset. The report to Cabinet also seeks to argue that the Drill Hall is not used. That is just not true! The Cabinet must reject this proposal and save our Drill Hall for others to continue to use it as a community facility just as it has been for the last 90 years.” The versatile Drill Hall was built for the local Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment in 1927 and after the Territorial Army moved out, Horsham District Council became custodians and landlords. The hall has always been used for a wide range of social pursuits – including a huge circus, and, incredibly, 1500 people attended an Empire Day celebration. Photographs show a variety of popular activities there have been much-enjoyed dances, taking advantage of the sprung wooden floor. The Battle of the Bands attracted a 500 strong audience, with the main hall used for conferences, elec-

tion hustings, awards ceremonies, church, political and campaign meetings, social dances and competitions, rehearsals, charity and disability events, community shows, concerts, artists’ exhibitions, Guides, Scouts, club functions, and beer festivals. Other ventures at the spacious venue include the Horsham District Jobs and Skills Fair, wellbeing, environmental and safety courses and seminars, wedding, christening, family and retirement parties. Ballroom and Latin classes and dance evenings and club gatherings are regular mainstays, along with jive sessions. The substantial Drill Hall building contains a variety of smaller meeting rooms for office use and a surprisingly varied list of activities, including drama workshops. There are bespoke studios for artists, and for the recording of the local weekly talking newspaper valued by those with sight impairment.

Window Wonderland winners announced across the District Dozens of the District’s retail businesses entered Horsham District Council’s Christmas Window Wonderland competition throughout December 2019, which helped to create a really festive feel and warm welcome for shoppers and visitors to our market towns and villages. The initiative encouraged business owners to get in to the spirit of the season by coming up with creative displays and hiding a ‘naughty elf’ for shoppers to find – drawing them into the stores to look around. Customers then voting for their favourite window were entered into a prize draw to win a year’s free cinema tickets at Horsham’s Capitol theatre. The business competition was supported by Horsham’s John Lewis Partnership team who recorded a video of top tips and professionally judged winning windows in a number of display categories. The Council is now delighted to announce the winners. The DaCosta family from Horsham are the lucky winners of a “Golden Ticket” to see a film a month, every month, for a whole year at Horsham’s Capitol abso-

lutely free. Delighted to receive their prize at the Capitol Box Office, they also learnt about the Box Office Babes service whilst they were there, so that they can take along their baby daughter to the performances. Over 40 retail businesses registered to take part in the window dressing competition, also joining in the fun to hide lots of naughty elves amongst their displays for customers to spot. The winning businesses judged by John Lewis Partnership were: Best Overall Window in Horsham District - R Rhodes and Son, shoe repairers in Billingshurst. Special mention also goes to R Rhodes and Son as the business has been in operation for 101 years across four generations of the same family, making it one of a select group of centenarian businesses in the District. R Rhodes and Son was also the most popular window as voted for in the public competition. The business received a social media workshop with ByJove Media and a Visit Horsham 360 degree tour of their outlet to literally put them on the map. Most Christmassy - Village Care

Christina’s, Henfield Most Fun - Park and Brown, Billingshurst Best Lit Window - The Horsham Cellar, Horsham Best Product Display - Gris et Blanc, Steyning Most Imaginative - Crates Local Produce, Horsham Horsham District Council Chairman, Cllr Kate Rowbottom, presented the awards accompanied by Charles South from John Lewis Partnership. Cllr Row-

bottom commented: “It was a pleasure to be involved with this competition. The windows all looked amazing and really added to the atmosphere over the festive period creating a really good customer experience for shoppers. “It was also good to meet up with the winning local retailers and hear about their businesses and how grateful they were for the merchandising support they had been given. “Many thanks to all of you who

took part and our thanks go out also to John Lewis Partnership in Horsham for their help and advice which was much appreciated by all.” The promotion, organised by Horsham District Council’s Economic Development team, built upon the ‘Your Customer Experience’ campaign, supporting independent retailers across the District that do so much to make visits to our high streets a special experience.

Helping you feel secure in keeping your child safe online A series of free events for parents and carers to learn how to keep their children safe online starts next month to raise awareness for Safer Internet Day (Tuesday 11 February). West Sussex County Council’s Community Safety and Wellbeing Staying Safe Online team are delivering the ‘digital online safety sessions’ for parents and carers in schools across the county throughout February and March. The sessions will offer invaluable tips and advice on how to keep children safe online, including: What children are doing online Identifying some of the risks children may face online Looking at how you can support your children to protect themselves Showing you the help, support and resources available How to report any concerns There will be useful resources to take away from the sessions and the opportunity to ask any ques-

tions you may have about your child’s internet safety. Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Fire and Rescue and Communities, said: “Safer Internet Day is a great reminder that we all need to be more aware of our safety online, but it can be hard for parents and carers to keep track of what their children are doing on the internet. “These events are a great way for anyone who has children to learn more about how they can encourage positive use of the internet and, ultimately, how their children can navigate any online risks.” These adult only sessions are aimed at anyone who has or looks after children, but friends and family members who want to learn more can also register to come along. New Winery Planned for Mannings Heath Golf Club and Wine Estate

Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate has proposed plans to build a winery, tasting room and restaurant on the 500-acre site. The new building will be needed for the production and storage of wine produced from 150 tons of grapes grown annually at the estate’s vineyard. Entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE, CEO of the Benguela Collection wine and hospitality group, acquired the golf club in 2016 and in the following year planted a 37acre vineyard. Total production is projected at 75,000 bottles of sparkling wine annually: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. The first crop is due in 2020, with the release of wine in 2023. Penny Streeter said: “We have created a unique wine destination at Mannings, with wine-themed

events and food pairings throughout the year, and the recently opened Vineyard Kitchen restaurant. There are golf buggy tours of the vineyard, barbeques on the terraces, and 18 and a 9-hole golf courses. “The new building we are planning is essential to house the equipment required for the pressing of grapes and fermentation, bottling and storage of wine. It would also include a 120 seat restaurant and wine tasting room to create a special visitor experience, combining art, cuisine and wine, with beautiful views over the golf course.” The new buildings would be in a ‘Cape Dutch’ style of architecture similar to the design of wine farms in South Africa’s Western Cape. The group has an award-winning

vineyard on the Hermanus Wine Route in the Walker Bay region. The Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is a major tourist attraction in the region, with its oceanside location and nature reserve, as well as a restaurant, art gallery and Pirate Adventure Golf. The winery at Mannings Heath is also needed for processing grapes produced on another estate three miles away at Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens, which the Benguela Collection acquired in 2017. It is home to a small, experimental Pinotage vineyard that the group’s winemaker, Johann Fourie, is using to evaluate growing conditions in Sussex for a grape that is usually seen as South Africa’s signature variety.

In West Sussex, the mass sleepout event will be hosted by YMCA Horsham at their football ground. Across the UK, recent research* estimates that over 103,000 young people are homeless or at risk of homelessness. These figures only include young people who have asked their local council for help, so the true figure is likely to be much higher. The causes of youth homelessness are varied

and complex, however one of the main reasons for youth homelessness is family breakdown; a young person being told to leave the family home or leaving because it isn’t safe to stay. The frightening reality for many young people is suddenly having nowhere to call home; favours from extended family or friends run out and they can quickly find themselves on the streets. Effective, early intervention for young people at risk of homelessness is essential. YMCA DownsLink Group run a range of integrated services across West Sussex, including Horsham and Crawley, to help prevent young people becoming homeless in the first place. Another significant factor in the cause of youth homelessness is the rise in mental health issues. YMCA DownsLink Group works extensively to help all young people by offering specialist support through counselling services (YMCA Dialogue), both in the community and via schools. Last year, the charity provided 3,500 children, young

Therapy Dogs at Collyer’s

people and families with therapy. In addition, around 68% of the young people living in YMCA supported accommodation suffer with mental health difficulties. Some of the money raised by Sleep Easy will ensure that these young people receive the therapeutic care they need to successfully transition into independent living. Although it is a tough challenge, Sleep Easy is a great community event to be part of. It doesn’t seek to replicate the experience of homelessness, but gives an insight into the challenges young people face. Those looking to host their own event on a date of their choice are also welcome, with downloadable tools available on the website (ymcadlg. org). YMCA DownsLink Group is encouraging everyone taking part to secure sponsorship, and the money raised will help fund their vital services for local young people. Collyer’s staff and students recently welcomed ‘Pets as Therapy’ volunteers and their dogs, who came in to spend an afternoon at the Ofsted outstanding sixth form college. As part of Collyer’s Wellbeing Week, students signed up for a specific slot and spent time with their chosen dog and to chat to the volunteers. Helen Mayer Dean, Collyer’s Director of Study Support and Student Wellbeing, organised the event with Patricia Bland, who is Voluntary Area Co-ordinator & Temperament Assessor for Pets As Therapy. Helen was delighted: “The event was hugely successful and really had a positive impact on student wellbeing. Our students stated that they ‘loved it’ and asked whether they could

stay longer. Some even stayed for the entire afternoon!” Working with Patricia were fellow volunteers Yvonne Adam, Kevin Crump, Tania Edwards, Julie Garner, Jane Griffiths, Rowena Harris and Emma MacDonald. Deputy Principal Steve Martell said: “It was great to see so many students and staff take up the opportunity and it was a really uplifting afternoon. Fleurie, Magnus, Pepper, Anouk, Hardy, Teddie, Nancy and Holly were a credit to their owners!” Assistant Principal Andrea John added: “Helen and I are hoping to make these visits a regular part of our wellbeing provision. Massive thanks to Patricia Bland and fellow volunteers for bringing in their gorgeous dogs!”

Yoga with Meg to hold charity yoga class to raise funds for Australian Bushfire Relief

At 9:30am on Sunday 16 February, yoga teacher Meg Thompson will be hosting a special charity yoga class at Millais School to raise funds for Australian Bushfire Relief (in conjunction with The Salvation Army). Meg - whose Yoga with Meg team offers a range of weekly yoga classes throughout Horsham, Worthing and Littlehampton, as well as residential retreats in the UK and overseas - will welcome yoga enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to the main school hall at Millais for an hour long practice. This event will be Meg’s sixth charity yoga class, having previously raised vital funds for Streetlight UK, MIND, Help Refugees, Raleigh International, and Ourmala. She explained: “Australia is experiencing an unprecedented number of bushfires which are causing tragic loss of life, environment, and property. It’s utterly heartbreaking to think about the people, animals,

homes and habitats that are being engulfed and devastated by raging fires, smoke, and ash. Catastrophic fires have already claimed at least 24 lives, and well over 500 million animals have perished, not to mention the loss of 16 million acres of land and over 1,300 homes. “The bushfires are likely to continue for months, as Australia’s summer has only just begun. I chose to donate to the Salvation Army’s continued efforts, as their teams are active at various locations and evacuation centres, providing vital meals and other support to both evacuees and frontline responders. “My charity classes are gentle and inclusive to all – everyone is welcome and you don’t have to be a regular attendee of my classes to join us. You can even bring your children, if you believe they can stay on their mat for an hour! All you need to do is book for free online and then bring your mat, a donation, and an open heart on the day. I’m always blown away by the amount of support we get at our charity events and I’d love to see as many faces as possible on the 16th February.” For more information and to register your attendance on 16th February, please visit https:// www.yogawithmeg.org/charityclass To donate via Yoga with Meg’s Australian Bushfire Relief page, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/yogawithmegcharity

Survey results say West Sussex is a good place to grow old!

A significant majority of people think West Sussex is a good place to grow old, according to the results of the county council’s Age Well survey. More than 570 people completed the survey, which was launched in October at the start of the council’s Age Well campaign, to find out what older residents currently do, or might want to do, to stay healthy, happy and independent. The results show that 88% of people who completed the survey agreed or strongly agreed that they felt safe in the county, while more than 85% felt they could keep physically and mentally healthy. More than 88% also agreed or strongly agreed that they have opportunities to be healthy, happy and enjoy life in West Sussex.

However, nearly 30% of participants said they don’t feel part of their community and 49% said they didn’t know what support is available to make their home safer, while 23% responded that they were unsure. Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “I’m pleased that some of our residents think our county is a good place to grow old, but disappointed that so many feel they are not part of their community. “Feeling isolated can affect lots of people, especially those living in rural areas who might find it difficult to get out and about or see anyone. “The council offers practical support to assist people maintain their independence in their own

home, but it appears that not everyone is aware of the help and support that is available. “The responses to our survey will help to inform the best way we can support people and make sure that more residents feel that West Sussex is a good place to grow old.” Practical advice, including tips on how to connect with others in your local community, are available at www.westsussex.gov.uk/ agewell Prevention Assessment Teams (PATs) across West Sussex can also provide information and advice that can help people feel safer and independent in their own home. PATs normally work with people who do not receive other specialist health or social care services. Call 01243 642121 or email socialcare@westsussex.gov.uk to make an appointment at one of our community venues when you can be assessed by a member of the Prevention Assessment Team. Little Green Monsters bully parents to save energy... but they’re the worst offenders! THE SOUTH EAST’S ‘woke’ kids are bullying their parents into becoming more eco-friendly to save the planet, according to new research by leading comparison site Moneyexpert.com Pester power is becoming a force for good as almost half of mums and dads (44%) say they have been pressured to go green and save energy by the mini Greta Thunbergs in their own home. And while you might expect vocal teenagers to drive behaviour change – two thirds (65%) of parents say the pressure is coming from kids as young as 4! The study, to mark Big Energy Saving Week, may highlight the visibility and influence that the

teenage climate-change activist, and recent events such as the Australian bush fires, are having on the nation’s kids, and their family’s energy consumption habits at home. Over two thirds (69%) of parents say the ‘mini Greta’ in their home has talked more or asked more questions about the environment and the climate crisis over the past 12 months. Wildlife TV presenter and conservationist, Michaela Strachan, said: “We are in crisis mode when it comes to looking after our planet. We all need to radically change our behaviour to live in a more sustainable way and we need to do it now. Last year was a serious wakeup call when we all became aware of just how serious the challenge has become. It is so inspiring to see that children are leading the way, taking action, encouraging their parents to change and becoming future eco warriors.” As a consequence of this planet-friendly pester power, the most common changes made are walking or cycling more (51%), making more of an effort to turn off the lights (39%), turning down the thermostat (17%), washing clothes at lower temperatures (30%), and taking shorter showers (20%). However, despite kids heaping on the pressure, four in five (78%) parents say that it’s actually their children who are the biggest energy-wasters. Over half (54%) of parents say they still have to nag their eco-warrior kids to switch off lights in unused rooms, and 27% say their child takes longer than usual in the shower. Over the past 12 months, 91% of parents have made environmental changes to their lifestyle and to the running of their home, with half (47%) admitting that if it wasn’t for their child, they wouldn’t have realised the importance and impact of their current actions.

However, despite being inspired to take positive actions, only a fifth (20%) of parents say they currently use a renewable energy provider. And it appears they are a little “green” about how it works. 34% say they won’t switch because they believe green energy is more expensive than their current energy provider, and more than one in 10 (11%) believe switching won’t make a tangible difference to the climate crisis. However, recent analysis by Moneyexpert. com highlighted that for the cost of powering a home with average gas and electricity yearly consumption, savings of over £300 per year can be made by switching to green energy rates. A fifth (18%) hold the misconception that a renewable electricity supplier sends energy direct from solar and wind farms into people’s homes, when in reality, everyone gets their electricity from the same grid and it’s a question of how a supplier sources electricity that matches what you use.  Jason Smith, CEO of Moneyexpert.com, said: “Typically the focus of Big Energy Saving Week is about making ethical choices about energy consumption – and in light of the climate crisis, we want to make people aware that it is absolutely possible to save money in an environmentally responsible way. Misperceptions about the cost of green energy are getting in the way of people taking steps that are both purse-friendly and planetfriendly. With a couple more months of winter, and high energy bills ahead, now is a great time to listen to your kids, reevaluate your current expenditure, and explore whether there’s a better deal available from a renewable energy supplier.” For information on how you can save both money and energy and find a green energy provider, visit Moneyexpert.com

Have your say on safety & crime issues in our area A consultation to shape the priorities for community safety in the Horsham District has been launched recently by Horsham District Council in conjunction with other community safety partners. Horsham District Council is a lead member of the local Safe and Well Partnership and in order to plan and implement key priorities, it is engaging with residents across the District to gather their views on crime and disorder. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia Youtan, said: “To ensure that we are addressing the issues of most concern in our area, we are keen to hear from as many residents as possible about what matters to

them. The more we know, the better we can allocate and target our plans and resources so I would encourage everyone to complete the survey.” The Council has created the short survey which should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Topics in the survey include: how safe you feel whether you have been a victim of a crime what you feel are the main causes of crime what you feel the Safe and Well Partnership should be focusing on. The online survey opened on 6 January 2020 and can be found at www.horsham.gov.uk/crime-sur-

vey . If you would prefer a paper version, please email communitysafety@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215173. The deadline for completion is Sunday 16 February and all completed surveys will be entered into a prize draw for a £100 gift card that can be spent in local shops. The survey is anonymous but if you would like to be entered into the prize draw, you will need to leave either a phone number or email address so you can be contacted.

Rotary Christmas tree re-cycling scheme raises funds for local charity At Christmas, the Rotary Club of Storrington & Pulborough District once again provided a valuable service to the Community and at the same time, helped to ‘green’ our area. Christmas Trees were collected from residents after twelfth night then recycled at an Ashington farm to provide material for use on the farm - all for a minimum donation of £5 per tree. The scheme was publicised by labelling trees in garden centres and handing out leaflets during Rotary’s Christmas collection. Collecting the trees in the Storrington, Pulborough and Ashington areas went smoothly thanks to huge assistance provided by Chanctonbury Lions Club and Christie & Len Earl. A total of 269 trees were collected raising approximately £1,500, all of which is being donated to three charities - Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice, St Barnabas House and Turning Tides. All the trees have now been chipped with the residue ready for use around the farm. The chip-

ping operation was undertaken by Rob Dakin of Findon Valley Tree Care who donated his fee to the charity. Rotary’s project coordinator, Ray Miles, said: “We are really pleased with how the project went and given the very positive comments by many residents, we anticipate an even larger number of trees next year. For a small donation, residents can avoid all the inconvenience and mess of transporting trees to the tip or burning them, knowing that they will have ‘green’ end use and that very worthwhile charities will benefit in the process.” Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club is grateful to all of its partners in this venture including Chanctonbury Lions, Findon Valley Tree Care; to the participating Christmas Tree retailers (Squires - Washingon; Tates - Old Barn Nursery; Big Plant Centre - Ashington and British Garden Centres - Pulborough) and particularly to all the local residents who supported the project.

Electrical training provider Trade Skills 4U has announced that they will be offering FREE to attend seminars throughout February outlining ‘How to become an Electrician’. The events will be held at their national training centres in Crawley.

Horsham BID Steering Group set to Launch Plans for BID development Following Horsham District Council’s decision, earlier this year, to support plans to develop proposals for a new business improvement district (BID) for the town, businesses are being invited to come to a special meeting to find out more about what BIDs are, what a BID could do for Horsham Town Centre and how they can have their say. The meeting, to be held at Horsham’s Capitol on 7 November from 6pm to 8pm, is designed to introduce businesses in Horsham to the opportunities and benefits that a BID could bring, as well as helping them to understand exactly how BIDs work. There are already over 300 BIDs across the UK, largely operating in town and city centres, and they deliver a range of projects that support businesses within them, from marketing and events to direct business support and environmental enhancements. A further key feature of BIDs is the collective voice they provide to business communities in dealing with public sector bodies. BIDs are funded by a small levy, usually between 1% and 2%, charged against the rateable value of commercial business premises and, as they are funded by the

businesses that pay into them, businesses vote in a secret ballot on whether or not to adopt them. Businesses vote on the contents of business plans put together after extensive consultations with businesses and, if approved at ballot, most BIDs are operated as independent social enterprise businesses, run by voluntary boards of directors drawn from the business community. The development of the BID is just getting underway in Horsham, with the vote expected to take place in the autumn of 2020. Horsham District Council has recently appointed national BID experts, Revive & Thrive, to work with them and businesses in the town in order to bring the BID to fruition. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy, Cllr Paul Clarke, explained: “Our vision is to make Horsham Town Centre a vibrant and attractive place for businesses to grow and succeed. We’re always looking for new ways to make our economy stronger and that’s why we’re asking local businesses in the Horsham area what they think about setting up a Business Improvement District. “Business Improvement

Districts can be powerful tools, helping local authorities and the business community to work together to improve the local trading environment. They can raise the area’s profile through marketing and events and help to improve the trading environment in order to increase footfall and spending in the town centre. “We’re interested to know what local businesses think of the idea so please come along to this initial event at The Capitol ,find out what it is all about and most importantly how it could benefit you.” Revive & Thrive Director, Russell Downing, commented: “We are excited to begin working with the business community in Horsham. We are already impressed

Youth choirs and musical theatre groups are being given the opportunity to perform with Broadway and West End leading lady Marisha Wallace when her debut UK tour hits Horsham. The sensational star of such smash-hit shows as Dreamgirls, Waitress, Aladdin, The Book of Mormon – and very soon Hairspray – will play a series of unmissable live shows throughout March. And now youth choirs and musical theatre groups will get the chance to take to the stage with Marisha when she plays Capitol Theatre on March 13. They will sing two songs with the West End star including a rendition

of This Is Me from the blockbuster movie The Greatest Showman. Marisha said: “This is my first ever headline theatre tour and I’m incredibly excited to get the chance to sing the songs I adore to audiences across the UK. “Whether they are songs from the stage, screen or my own material, there are a number in the set I know will sound amazing when sung with a choir. “As I really want to make these shows unique and extra special, what better way to do that than to be joined on stage each night by a different local choir or musical theatre group? “I started singing with my

church choir at the age of five and so vocal groups have always played such an important part of my life. “So, what are you waiting for guys? If you want to join me on stage, helping me sing the songs I love, then get in touch today. This tour is going to be a truly magical experience and it would be great if you could join me.” Beginning at Sale’s Waterside (March 8), Marisha’s tour then heads to Newbury Corn Exchange (March 11), Horsham Capitol (March 13), Birmingham Hippodrome (March 14), Leeds City Varieties (March 16), Lichfield Garrick (March 17), Glasgow Glee Club (March 18) and the Arts Theatre in London’s West End (March 23). Tickets are on sale now via www.cuffeandtaylor.com or www.cornexchangenew.com If your choir or musical theatre group would like to join Marisha on stage at one of these dates,d email casting@cuffeandtaylor.com for more details. Marisha was born and raised in a small town in North Carolina. But the small town never held down her big city dreams. From glittering New York, her unbelievable talent has taken her around the world. Inspired by the likes of the late, great Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald, Marisha’s voice will pull you from your seat and to

your feet. She effortlessly infuses jazz, gospel and R&B with a healthy dose of soul that will leave you feeling inspired and uplifted. On Broadway, she starred in shows including Disney’s Aladdin, The Book of Mormon and Something Rotten and then here, in the UK, as Effie White in the stellar West End hit Dreamgirls. Described by The New York Post as “a marvel”, Marisha’s spinetingling rendition of ‘And I Am Telling You’ from Dreamgirls has quite simply to be seen and heard to be believed. Last summer she starred alongside Will Smith in Disney’s big screen summer blockbuster Aladdin. Together with her theatre success, this versatile talent has taken on the mainstream music world by performing at the Royal Albert Hall, The London Palladium and Cadogan Hall with such revered international artists as Seal, James Blunt and Gregory Porter. Following her UK tour Marisha, who recently returned to her role of Becky in Waitress at London’s Adelphi Theatre, will play forceof-nature Motormouth Maybelle in the eagerly awaited West End return of Hairspray alongside Michael Ball.

Horsham post welldeserved first win

Horsham impress with another landmark victory

Saturday January 18 – Premier – Division 2 East Horsham 1st XI 2-1 Epsom

Saturday January 18 – RFU London 1 South League Horsham 27-21 - Medway

Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter At Christ’s Hospital last Saturday Horsham, with a squad of 15, finally fulfilled their potential with a worthy, most welcome win against Epsom. Horsham have flirted with victory several times this season, but after taking and then relinquishing the lead in previous matches, they went two goals up against the Surrey visitors and showed great resilience to bag all three points after Epsom had clawed back a goal. Horsham set off in attacking mode and when the visiting keeper could only parry a shot, Zac Chinn was on hand to put in a well-taken field goal. An excellent save then denied Horsham the chance of going further ahead from a short corner, the ball coming back out with the woodwork coming to Epsom’s aid. Sam MacDonald then broke through and fired across, but no Horsham player was in place to maximise the opportunity. Epsom came to the party, but their short corner was well saved and cleared upfield for Chinn to supply Joey Humphreys, who steadied himself and then unleashed an absolute corker into

the top right corner of the goal, his seventh of the season giving Horsham a two goal advantage for the first time this campaign. Epsom responded with more possession, earning two short corners in rapid succession, an initial save being put in on the rebound by the prolific James Midmer. A dangerous Epsom attack followed, Horsham being relieved to get a reprieve in a one on one situation, before two Epsom short corners were kept out just before the break came with Horsham leading 2-1. On the resumption an early Horsham shot was blocked before Epsom controlled possession. Horsham, though, retaliated with a short corner, which was cleared off the line. Yellow cards reduced both sides to 10 men, a Horsham shot coming to nothing, as did two Epsom shorts in the dying minutes, Horsham successfully running down the clock for their first win, player coach Andy Blood telling the District Post: “That was a massive game for us and it was great to see us so hungry for the ball”, teammate Peter Neave adding: “It is a huge relief to get an elusive win under our belt.” This Saturday Horsham travel to 7th-placed Purley Walcountians, against whom they drew 3-3, after being three goals adrift in the corresponding home fixture.

Horsham Ladies cruise through to another Final Sussex Cup Semi Final Saturday January 18 – Horsham Ladies 5-0 Burgess Hill Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter The Sussex Cup very much belongs to Horsham Ladies – since the 2001-2 season they have appeared in 14 finals, winning 12, and, last Saturday at Christ’s Hospital they booked their place at yet another Finals Day, on April 25th with an unchallenged five goal demolition of Burgess Hill, having beaten Brighton 4-0 in the Quarter

Final the previous Saturday. The Semi Final was marked by a Louisa Campbell hat trick, and two goals from Anna Jamieson, Horsham leading 3-0 at the break, Fran Crossley – sidelined after being hit by a ball into her left eye in training and awaiting the removal of stitches – telling the District Post: “This was another comfortable cup win for us and we’ll be playing the winners of East Grinstead v Brighton in the Final.” Horsham Ladies’ league programme resumes on Saturday February 1st when they welcome Wimbledon 2s to Christ Hospital for a noon pushback.

Rugby Richard Ordidge - Sports Reporter Starting slowly, Horsham struggled to retain the ball with dominant Medway looking ominous as penalties were conceded, the visitors slotting two kicks, and when they scored a converted try they led 13-0 after as many minutes. But, considering Medway’s superiority, Horsham’s defence performed well to concede only one try. Horsham were living off scraps and with a short period of possession kicked a penalty, and from the ensuing catch and drive Ciaran Preston scored. More settled, Horsham were getting better ball, Joe Notter spotting a mismatch to glide between two props for a fine try, converted by Harrison Sims to narrow the deficit to 12-13 on the half hour mark, but Medway kicked a penalty to go into the break leading 12-16. The visitors started the second half strongly and when they scored a try out wide to lead 12-21, the momentum appeared to have swung back in Medway’s favour, but then the fight back started. Sims successfully kicked a penalty, then Preston showed an amazing turn of pace for a hooker to accelerate away from defenders to make a break of 40 metres, following which a penalty was awarded in front of the posts - but, knowing that they needed tries to win, Horsham chose to take a scrum, pushing Medway back for Vince Everitt to drive over for his sixth try in three games, holding off tacklers in the process. With the try converted by Sims, Horsham led for the first time - 22-21. Next, great phase play combining forwards and backs, saw the ball make its way to Sims who glided through the gap to finish well and secure the fourth try bonus point, the converted kick taking Horsham to 27-21, resolute defence holding off repeated Medway attacks to secure the outstanding win. Delighted Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “A very pleas-

ing five point win against one of the league’s top sides, Medway being perennial challengers for the title. We knew it would be a very tough day, but we had the game to beat them. We started slowly and our error count under pressure conceded both field position and possession through the first quarter. However as we settled we started to look more dangerous and by half time were right back in the fight. Our second half was excellent. Defence was solid and our fourth try was well finished by Harrison Sims who had a fine game following long term injury. The front row was excelled and, Joe Notter, in only his second start for the first

team controlled the game and got his back line moving well with great delayed passes and clever chips. This performance was capped off with a fine try. The back three of Declan Nwachukwu, Christian Squire and Marcus Condon were a threat in attack and, in the middle, both Harrison Sims, Johnny Ordidge and for the last 15 mins, young colt Oli Chennell, looked composed. Jamie Redmayne, playing out of position was immense today, leading by example. In a tight call, Man of the Match went to Ciaran Preston who was superb. On Saturday we visit old rivals Dartfordians for an always hugely competitive match.”

Cricket is coming – club league fixtures announced Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter We may still be in the grasp of mid winter, but every player, supporter and follower will be boosted by the release of the Sussex league fixtures. The league programme starts on May 9th and continues every Saturday without break until the last round of games on September 5th. In the Sussex Premiership Rof-

fey will be defending their fifth title in six years, beginning with a home fixture against Cuckfield, with their final game at East Grinstead. Following relegation last season, Horsham find themselves in unaccustomed Division 2 territory and will be pressing to return to the top flight at the first opportunity. Their first game will be a home encounter against Preston Nomads 2nd XI, while they finish their pro-

gramme on the first Saturday in September, again at Cricketfield Road – against fellow relegated Mayfield. Billingshurst will also be eager to return to the Premiership and kick off their campaign versus Mayfield at Jubilee Fields, where they sign off their season against St James’s Montefiore. There will be local derbies between Horsham and newly promoted Roffey 2nds – at home on May 23rd and at the Crawley Road ground on July

25th, while Horsham entertain Billingshurst on June 13th, with the corresponding away game on August 15th. Meanwhile, Roffey 2s host Billingshurst on May 30th with Billingshurst returning the favour on August 1st. The league fixtures are on the league website – www.sussexcricketleague.playcricket.com The Sussex Cup fixtures are awaited, meanwhile in the Royal London Club Championship – the

ECB National knockout competition – Roffey have a home first round tie against east Kent’s Sandwich on Sunday May 10th. Last season Sandwich finished mid table in the Kent Premiership. Horsham won the National in 2005, but are not entered in the 2020 tournament. Ahead of commencement of the 2020 league and cup season a preview will appear in your District Post

Charman’s 600th appearance for Horsham was marked by a very disappointing result for the Hornets against struggling, relegation-threatened Merstham, whom they had beaten 4-0 at home in October. Having conceded 58 goals Merstham have the worst goal difference in the league and had

come unstuck four times in their last five outings, but Horsham were unable to breach their defence. Fair play to Merstham, though, who scored the only goal of the match on the half hour mark and then successfully kept the Hornets at bay for the remainder of the match. However, Horsham had the first opportunity to score – in the opening minutes, when Greg Cundle latched onto a distant supply only to be thwarted by keeper Matte Pierson’s legs. Pierson was then back in action, but not unduly challenged by a Will Miles header. A Merstham corner followed, Harvey Sparks and Steve Metcalf combining to avert a close call. But, Horsham’s defence was subsequently found wanting when James O’Halloran’s cross enabled Calvin Ekpiteta to finish well, putting the hosts in front. Horsham soon had a golden opportunity to equalise, but Sparks was unable to convert Charman’s pinpoint supply, the first half ending with an unrequited penalty appeal when Metcalf went down inside the box, and, with the Hornets committed, George Bentley had to rush out from his goal to avert a late Merstham counter attack. With Horsham resuming 1-0 adrift, Bentley gathered an early Merstham effort, following which the home defence negated the Hornets’ attempts, Rob O’Toole then firing wide. Mid way through the second half Miles prevented a further Merstham goal before the hosts’ Ayoola was off target. Horsham responded, but Pierson had no difficulty in saving Cundle’s effort, before, with under a quarter of an hour left on the clock, Merstham full back Luke Ige deflected sub Lee Harding’s volley on to the bar and away. Pierson was sanctioned for time wasting, with Horsham frustratingly unable to get the ball into his net during minutes of added time. Despite this further away defeat Horsham still remain third, with 46 points, but fourthplaced Carshalton Athletic with 45 have played a game less. Cray Wanderers (fifth) are on level pegging with Carshalton, while Hornchurch are on 43, having played three games fewer than Horsham. So, play off contention is tight with Horsham needing to get back to winning ways - on Saturday they return home to The Camping World Stadium to welcome 16th-placed Bishop’s Stortford (who beat Horsham 2-0 in the corresponding away fixture). Meanwhile, Worthing is the runaway leader with 54 points, current runners up Folkestone having 49.

Strong YMCA win ends in card fest chaos Saturday January 18 - Southern Combination Football League: Premier Division Horsham YMCA 3-1 AFC Uckfield Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After leading 1-0 at the break, Horsham YMCA completed a comfortable league double over Uckfield at Gorings Mead last Saturday, avenging their elimination from the RUR Cup by the visitors in August. Uckfield equalised, but YM responded with two second half goals amid scenes bordering on farce, Uckfield being reduced to eight men to the bewilderment of spectators. YM attacked straight from the off, Dan Evans shooting straight at Uckfield keeper Phil Hawkins ahead of a YM corner. Johden de Meyer then tested Hawkins with YM having the lion’s share of possession. But, Uckfield were also mounting forays, Bailo Camara sending over a pinpoint cross for Craig Norman to induce a save from Aaron Jeal. Sam Lemon was felled just outside the area, Hawkins producing a good diving save to thwart Evans’ free kick. Matt Daniel then kept Hawkins on his toes, until the YM striker was scythed down, Dean Carden putting YM in front from the penalty spot just before the half hour mark. Corners at either end followed – two for YM – a dangerous

Uckfield cross being headed wide just before the break. Restarting, Uckfield looked more purposeful with sustained attacks. A goal looked likely and duly arrived in the 60th minute when Uckfield sub Dee Okoje’s centre was headed home by Ellis Cormack. Parity, though, was short-lived, Daniel promptly restoring YM’s lead. Uckfield went down to 10 when Taylor Maddock was sent off, heralding a bizarre session of play when two of his teammates – Dean StewartHunter and Cormack - were sin binned, giving YM a three man advantage, the Uckfield bench conceding: “We selfcombusted.” With control of the game evaporating, Uckfield got increasingly frustrated with the officials and each other, YM putting the result beyond doubt when Daniel latched onto Evans’ cross, swivelled and scored from close range. YM pressure produced several more shots and they might and should have scored more, Daniel hitting the post in the dying minutes, but the result was pleasing, moving YM up to 9th in the table, Chairman Geoff Foreman telling the District Post: “After training twice a week we looked fitter today against a nippy Uckfield side. It was a very entertaining game and we were worthy winners.” YM have no fixture this Saturday and return to action on February 1st with a visit to relegation threatened Hassocks.

Heath undone by Lingfield at HFC Saturday January 18 Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Football - Lingfield 4-2 Broadbridge Heath Broadbridge Heath’s away match against Lingfield was switched to Horsham’s Camping World Stadium last Saturday, Lingfield avenging their defeat against the Bears earlier in the season. With a long list of injuries and no Manager, Heath had hoped for a week’s recovery time, but Lingfield, three places below Heath prior to the match, were pleased to pick up three valuable points as they praised Horsham for their hospitality. Pending the appointment of a new Manager, Heath’s U23 boss Chris Simmons is filling the vacancy on an interim basis, supported by Nik Mulcahy, U23 Coach and committee member Chris Higgins while Assistant First Team Manager Sam Chapman takes some time off with the

club looking forward to his return. Heath went one down in the 12th minute and trailed 3-0 at the break, thanks to two goals from former Bear Richard Wetton and another by newly signed Kerran Boylan, returning to Lingfield for a second spell. But, Heath gave a better account of themselves in the latter stages of the second half after conceding a Conor Wilford goal 20 minutes after the restart. Heath Man of the Match Jake Hull clawed back the deficit from the penalty spot mid way through the half, promptly following up with his second goal, but Lingfield’s three-nil first half advantage proved too big a margin to overcome. Broadbridge Heath has no game this Saturday, but they are back in action on Tuesday (28th), starting at 7.45, with a potentially tough home encounter against fourth in the table Horley Town.
