Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday
Community step up to the Climate Crisis
introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help
from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter
Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

Following statements that the owners of the restaurant have found trading on the site a
challenge due to its location away from the centre of Horsham, causing them to look at possible alternative locations to accommodate the restaurant more centrally, planning application DC/19/1527 has been submitted to Horsham District Council to demolish the restaurant and erect a block of flats on the land. The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

ers in the vicinity, concern being expressed regarding the intended loss of the Smith & Western facility from its present position, and further parking in an area of busy, narrow roads with tight corners. The intended size of the new building also raised worries over potential loss of privacy, along with the additional demand it might place on services.

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,
which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Organisers Horsham District Council would like to thank all of their partners and sponsors who worked together to make the event happen including; Oddballs Car Club, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Guildford Harley Davidson, Horsham JEEP, Food Rocks and Coden Events, Corvette Club UK, Mid-Surrey Roadsters, Motion Picture Motors, Berkeley Homes, Freeman Brothers, Sussex Thunder AFC, Super Hero Parties, The Almost Elvis Band, Blueprint Blues Brothers, The Rec Rooms, The Crown and all of the musicians and performers, the event traders and food concessions.

Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter
At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the
Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-
veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Welland Medical were thrilled to win the Bee Kind heart. Chris Primett, Managing Director, said, “St. Catherine’s has been our company’s charity for over 10 years and many of our employees have a special connection with their unique work. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he
cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” Matt Turner was also a winning bidder of two hearts – Keepsake and Abstract Love. He said “I’m an art enthusiast so I was very keen to own some of these amazing works of art. My wife was fan of Keepsake; we’ve only been married a year and I wanted to treat her. I chose Abstract Love as it will look fantastic in the office.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. Each of the hearts had its own story to tell and I’m thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.” Hannah Liles, St Catherine’s

At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a
pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of
recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers
Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District.

SEP
“The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

The District Post is proud and excited to announce the launch of the Horsham Independent Business Alliance (HIBA). This new venture is the brainchild of District Post Managing Director Davey Pearson, who says: “Even for experienced practitioners, the business environment can be tough going. With the uncertainty of Brexit, high rents, business rates and other operating costs, running an enterprise can be very demanding. I’ve set up HIBA as a mutual help and support group for some of our highly impressive movers and shakers. The alliance offers a comprehensive marketing strategy based on 3 key elements, word of mouth, offline and online marketing. Essentially as members we will all champion each other and offer help and support in what could be a tough year for indepenent traders.” Davey continues: “Running one myself, I’m really passionate about independent businesses and the Horsham District is a vibrant location in which to operate, but it’s still a challenge, requiring skilful promotion.

HIBA started in December and is already proving popular, the concept being that for a very reasonable monthly fee, members benefit from publicity from a substantial weekly advertisement, featured in both the District Post print and online editions, dedicated Facebook facilities and a regular business forum. Davey Pearson, sums up by saying: “The HIBA group is very keen to get involved with local activities and charities, too. We’re determined and committed to remaining a manageable group with a family feel, so it’s not a case of ‘the more the merrier’, but there are still a few vacancies for new members and I’d be delighted to hear from any local business perhaps wishing to join. We want to keep the HIBA group to around 30 businesses to ensure that we can all maintain a good working knowledge of each other’s activities to enable us to help each other grow and prosper.” Davey Pearson, Managing Director of the District Post – 07397 959534 – dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success
Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance.

Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. spent designing products to help improve the lives of others.

Improved recycling puts Horsham District Council in the UK Top 20
Statistics recently released by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) identify Horsham District Council as one of the top 20 performing councils in the UK for improved kerbside recycling rates. The Horsham District has achieved a recycling rate of 53.5% exceeding the 50% target which was set for 2020. This achievement maintains us our position as the best performing district for recycling across the whole of West Sussex. Horsham District Council is now listed as one of the top 20 authorities for the most improved recycling rate in the country, going up 3.7 percentage points in
the 2018/19 year. In addition to this, residents have also reduced the amount of household waste produced per household by 53kg which is now the lowest in West Sussex. Commenting on this success, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Recycling and Waste Cllr Philip Circus said: “I am very proud of what we have achieved which has fulfilled our hopes and expectations. “My thanks go out to our residents who have risen to the challenge to increase their recycling having adapted to the changes to collections introduced by the Council in 2018. “But we cannot rest on our lau-
rels as more can always be done, and as a council, we continue to ask all residents to keep thinking about how they might be able to reduce, reuse or recycle their household waste even more.” While there is cause for celebration, there is always progress that can be made. The amount of waste produced per head is still high with food waste making up a staggering 41% of what we throw away. Whilst the Council is committed to exploring a strategy to collect food waste, more can be done to reduce this in the home. For more information on how to reduce waste please visit https:// www.horsham.gov.uk/wasterecycling-and-bins/householdbin-collections/general-waste/ reduce-your-household-waste Could you be one of our 2020 recycling champions? The Council is looking for families who are keen to cut their food waste and improve their recycling rate. You’d work with us over the coming year to take on new challenges and share updates on how you’re getting on. Initially we’ll do a waste audit offering support and advice to help you and then in December we will take a look to see what a difference has been made. At the end of the year you’ll receive a £100 shopping voucher as a thank you for taking part. If you are interested please email recyclingchampions@horsham.gov.uk to apply.

New exhibition at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery
It was in 1420, or thereabouts, that the owner of a 13th century building decided to create a new home and office complex next to his timber framed barn.
Little did he realise that parts of it would still be standing 600 years later and it would become the home of merchants, lawyers, an heiress, an antiques dealer, a tutor
to the Romanian Royal family and used as a base for making 37,000 gas masks; all before becoming the home of Horsham Museum and Art Gallery. Now Horsham Dis-

Horsham woman learns to run to help emergency service veterans Abbi Moon recently took her first steps at Horsham Parkrun and hasn’t looked back since. “When I won a ballot place in the London Marathon, I was determined that I would make it to the start line. I took my daughter to Horsham Junior Parkrun and within three months, I was able to run all of the 2km course.” recalls Abbi. “Going to the Saturday Parkrun was a bit scary, but everyone was so lovely and welcoming. It’s such an inclusive activity and everyone is valued; whether they run, walk or jog.” Within a few months, Abbi was able to run the 5km Parkrun course, but still didn’t feel confident about being able to run the marathon, so deferred her place to 2020: “I was a bit sad at first, but it seemed the sensible thing to do. When I realised that it was going to the 40th edition of the London Marathon in 2020, and it was shortly after my 40th birthday, it seemed perfect!” Having won a ballot place, Abbi looked for a charity to support. Having worked in animal rescue for over 16 years, Abbi naturally wanted to do something to help animals but also has a passion for mental health causes: “I currently work for the UK’s largest dog rehoming charity and we partner with a small charity called Service Dogs UK. They adopt rescue dogs and train them to be assistance dogs for veterans of the emergency services and armed forces who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It seemed the perfect blend of saving animals’ lives and mental health support!” The use of PTSD Assistance Dogs has originated from the US, where they have been used for veterans and others who suffered trauma and consequently PTSD. Service Dogs UK is a registered charity which trains and provides Assistance Dogs to veterans of the Armed Forces and Emergency Services who have a clinical diagnosis of PTSD. The benefits of PTSD Assistance Dogs has been well documented through both academic research and the successes of well-established Assistance Dog organisations globally. Benefits to clients are psychological and (inter) social and thereby mitigate some of the symptoms associated with PTSD such as nightmares, isolation, flashbacks, panic, anxiety. Documented benefits are:
• Increase in patience, impulse control, emotional regulation • Improved ability to display affection, decrease in emotional numbness • Improved sleep • Decreased depression, increase in positive sense of purpose • Decrease in startle responses • Reduce anxiety & lower blood pressure • Decrease in pain medications • Increased sense of belonging/ acceptance • Lowered stress levels, increased sense of calm A big part of this is due to oxytocin - which for someone with a dog at their side 24/7 will be released almost on a continuous basis. Oxytocin is also being researched as playing a part in terms of clinical treatments (nasally) for those with PTSD. Whilst PTSD Assistance Dogs on the programme can never replace primary therapy, as a complementary therapy, it has been proven to be beneficial. The dogs get specifically trained by the charity’s clients under the guidance of professionals over a 9 month period to support them in the following ways: Nightmare Waking, Medication Retrieval and Alert, Dissociation Interruption, Flashbacks, Anxiety & Panic Interruption, Exit - which is guiding a client to the nearest exit when they feel overwhelmed or panicked, Dog Body Positioning to create space around themselves allowing them to go shopping and deal with crowds as examples. They also cover physical disability tasks and will customise training towards the client if they have other specific needs an Assistance Dog could help them with. Where possible they work with the client’s mental health support worker. The Charity trains to a standard which is above the minimum requirements as set out by Assistance Dogs International and once clients graduate, they and their dogs, become Assistance Dog Partnerships which are covered by the Equality Act 2010 (EA). The EA provides for people with disabilities to have the same right to services supplied by shops, banks, hotels, libraries, pubs, taxis and restaurants as everyone else, as well as the need of employers and providers to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to allow access and overcome barriers. “It’s just such a worthwhile cause. Every penny I raise will
make a real difference to this small charity that is primarily operating in the Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire area.” Says Abbi. “It’s really helping to motivate me on this marathon journey.” Anyone wishing to support Abbi can follow her training at www. facebook.com/40doingthe40 and donations can be made at www. justgiving.com/40doingthe40 Abbi is also happy to hear from any companies that would like a sponsorship opportunity.

Coronavirus crisis – FCO issues ban on travel to China so here is advice on what to do for any planned holiday in the region
On Wednesday (29th Jan) the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issued a statement that all non-essential travel
to Wuhan and mainland China should be avoided due to the coronavirus outbreak. British Airways is the first airline to stop all flights to mainland China. Rebecca Kingsley, brand manager of travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk explains what you need to do if you have planned a holiday in the region: The Foreign Office has now issued advice stating I shouldn’t travel to my planned holiday destination, what can I do? If you booked your holiday to China with a tour operator or travel agent you should contact the company as they will be able to either amend your booking to an alternative destination or
provide you with a full refund. If you have booked each component of your holiday separately, and are unable to amend or cancel your booking, it is worth speaking with your travel insurance provider. Generally, most policies will not cover cancellation costs, but as every claim is assessed on an individual basis it is worth speaking with them. If I decide to travel to a country the FCO has issued a safety warning on, will I still be covered by my travel insurance policy? If the FCO has advised against all but essential travel then almost all travel insurance companies will not cover you to go there. Not all travel insurance
policies will cover you to cancel your holiday following an FCO warning; so, you must check your policy wording. If you are unsure, it is best to speak directly to your travel insurance provider before travelling. What should you do if your flight is cancelled? The first thing you should do is contact your airline to discuss a refund or re-booking your travel dates. If you have an accommodation booking it will be up to the hotel on whether or not they refund you, some have strict cancellation policies. However, under the circumstances they may do so for goodwill. If you
want to claim on your travel insurance policy you should check the policy wording. My connecting flight is via China, am I covered to cancel? Unfortunately if your connecting flight has not been cancelled then the airline is under no legal obligation to refund you, however, could be more lenient under these circumstances. If you are getting a connecting flight a nearby region such as Hong Kong or Macau, you will not be affected as the FCO warning does not apply to those regions, it is advised that you take your hygiene incredibly seriously and follow all advice given.

On Friday 24 January, Christ’s Hospital invited Jamie Catto, a founding member of the band Faithless and leader of personal development workshops, to talk to the students in a lecture entitled ‘Real is the New Sexy.’ Jamie believes that from infancy we are taught to edit ourselves in order to please others, but that this addiction to approval often holds us back and masks our personalities. He spoke about how to better know our deepest instincts and unlock our authentic selves, in a talk which proved to be extremely powerful and memorable. His talk created lots of discussion among the students and a few stayed behind to challenge his thoughts or purchase his book, entitled ‘Insanely Gifted: Turn Your Demons Into Creative Rocket Fuel.’ One of the pupils said: “After reading his book, I was excited to meet Jamie; he talks almost exactly like he does in his book. I really enjoyed the exercise where everyone looked into their partner’s eyes for 6 minutes in silence – it taught me that you don’t need words to have a conversation or learn more about somebody. It was a delight to host Jamie
and we hope more lucky people are able to benefit from his thought provoking talks and workshops.” Andrew Wines, Assistant Head (Admissions) at Christ’s Hospital had the following to say of the event: “Jamie Catto was an engaging speaker who consistently took us out of our comfort zone, ensuring the audience was learning from start to finish. He reminded us that real life flows unpredictably and that if we embrace our authentic selves, we can cope with that ambiguity. Despite his fascinating and highly relevant life story, Jamie made his talk about the pupils rather than about himself.” Jamie Catto is a British musician, video director, photographer, and script editor. He was a founding member of Faithless, before leaving in 1999 to form 1 Giant Leap. He travelled to 50 countries and five continents recording music and interviews with a digital video camera, a laptop and a stated intention to explore ‘The Unity in the Diversity’. 1 Giant Leap’s first album was released in 2002, was nominated for two Grammys in 2003 and sold around 300,000 copies.

Little Street School Voucher Scheme Christ’s Hospital Pupils Celebrate Oxbridge Success Little Street are launching an exciting new voucher scheme offering schools and nurseries FREE educational visits at our award winning role play centres. 30 lucky schools across Surrey, Kent and West Sussex will receive free exclusive hire sessions during the summer term, worth over £6500. 30 further schools will have the opportunity to visit at the reduced price of £99, saving over £100. All qualifying participants will also receive a raffle prize for their school. Educational trips at Little Street are already popular, with many schools visiting on an annual basis. Role play is linked to the EYFS and our centres provide a great link to the curriculum topic ‘People who help us’. Lambrook school are frequent visitors; here’s what their reception
Nine Christ’s Hospital pupils are celebrating news of their university offers from Oxford and Cambridge, following a gruelling application process. The successful students come from a diverse range of backgrounds, including students on bursaries, something Christ’s Hospital prides itself on, as it provides free, or places at a substantially reduced cost, to over 650 pupils each year. Simon Reid, Head Teacher at Christ’s Hospital, commented: “It is very impressive to see our pupils enjoying Oxbridge success. In an important sense, this is a victory for all pupils here. It also proves how transformative the power of education can be when, regardless of background, children are in an environment that frees them to like their learning.” The path to university is well travelled at CH, with 98% of pupils going on to university, but it is a tremendous achievement to have nine Oxbridge offers out of a relatively small Year 13 cohort of only 129 pupils. Interestingly, unlike other independent schools, 87% of CH’s main intake come from state schools. Will Richards, Head of Sixth Form, said: “As a school, we are immensely proud of the achievements of our Sixth Form students. These offers of places at Oxford and Cambridge are thoroughly deserved by our students, due to the combination of their academic ability, their determination to do well and the drive they have shown in developing both their subject knowledge and their wider leadership roles during their time at Christ’s Hospital.” CH pupil Martha, from Seaford, East Sussex, who has been offered a place at Oxford University to read German and Beginner’s Arabic, spoke of the application process being very long: “I had to take a few language aptitude tests first and once I had passed them, I was invited for interview. I stayed in Oxford for a full week as I ended up having five interviews!” In preparation for their applications, CH students underwent a thorough and detailed support programme. As part of this programme, the students received detailed input into many different facets of a successful application, including how to select the right
college, understanding the grades they would need to be successful and effective interview technique. The students also visited other Sussex-based schools to complete a mock interview, a valuable process in supporting them to become more proficient in discussing their views and abilities in their chosen subjects. CH pupil Juliet, from Horsham, is “extremely excited” to have been offered a place at Oxford to read English Language & Literature. Juliet wrote and published a fantasy novel at the age of 15, something that must have helped her application stand out from the crowd. Oxford and Cambridge universities place ever more weight on students’ supercurricular pursuits. “Supercurricular” is loosely defined as anything that falls outside of normal lessons, but is specifically related to the subject the student wants to study, such as entering essay competitions, attending talks, pursuing work experience placements and other challenges. Mr Richards explained: “All of our successful candidates have amassed a vast portfolio of supercurricular activities and these portfolios will have played a large part in their successes at interview.” Six of the nine CH pupils have secured offers from Oxford University to read subjects including Classics, English, PPE, Music, Economics and German; three further pupils have been offered places at Cambridge University to study Architecture, Computer Science and Human, Social & Political Science. Despite lots of hard work still ahead of them to achieve their grades, they are now fully motivated to secure their places. Meanwhile, Mr Richards says that CH has “recently launched our new Oxbridge Support programme with our current year 12 students of whom around a quarter are interested in the challenge of applying to Oxbridge for 2021 entry. We are hoping for similar success stories with our 2021 Oxbridge cohort so we wish them well with this challenge.” Image: The nine Christ’s Hospital pupils who have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge. teacher, Beth Brennan, has to say: “Little Street is a brilliant concept. We have been delighted to see our Reception children thoroughly enjoy this venue. It is a fantastic trip for many reasons - so many Areas of Learning are evident when the children explore. The children absolutely love going - they adore the role play opportunities and as a teacher, it is interesting to observe which areas they enjoy the most.” Vouchers are available to all parents visiting Little Street from 3rd Feb – 31st March, with one voucher issued per paying child. Vouchers can be collected at Little Street centres in Frimley, West Byfleet, Horsham (Rudgwick), Chichester, Sevenoaks and Maidstone. Each venue is offering 5
free educational trips, so the first 5 schools to collect 100 vouchers and deliver them to their chosen venue will receive a free exclusive hire. The promotion is open to primary schools and nurseries. For more information on Little Street, please visit www.littlestreet.co.uk

Action Medical Research makes shortlist in the 2020 Charity Film Awards Elijah’s Story, a short film created by Horsham-based children’s charity Action Medical Research, has been unveiled on the shortlist for the 2020 Charity Film Awards. The Charity Film Awards celebrates the effective use of video by the third sector to change mindsets, raise awareness for the charity or fundraise. 65,000 people took part in the public voting stage to determine the shortlist and 400 films were entered. Now a panel of expert judges, which includes high profile names from entertainment, business, politics and media, will decide the finalists. The winners of the Charity Film Awards 2020 will be announced at a gala ceremony in central London, in the spring. The five-minute film shares the heartbreaking experiences of the Halse family whose son Elijah,
born extremely prematurely, died at just 37 days old. Funded by Action Medical Research, Professor Rachel Tribe and her team at King’s College London are working to develop a new screening test that can help identify pregnant women who are at increased risk of early delivery. In the film, Professor Tribe describes her hopes to save more babies’ lives: “If we can develop a new test for women in early pregnancy, identifying those at risk would enable appropriate steps to be taken to protect their baby from being born too soon.” Action Medical Research worked with charity specialist content agency, Inspired Films, to create this very special short film. Action’s Director of Communications, Sarah Moss, said: “This film lies at the heart of our Born Too Soon campaign and the work we are doing as a charity to help
New 2020 health rides programme announced
Horsham District Council’s Sports Development team together with local volunteer ride leaders are geared up to organise more healthy bikes rides for 2020. The 2020 Horsham District Health Rides Programme has just been announced. The Health Rides are volunteer-led and free of charge, and will kick off their third year on Wednesday 12 February. The first ride will be an onroad ride to Sumners Pond, Barns Green from the start and return point of the Broadbridge Heath Village Centre. The rides will then continue until November including another 12 rides encompassing previously popular routes such as Southwater Country Park, the Down’s Link to Rudgwick, Pedlar’s Way, Warnham and the Shelley route. The Steyning to Shoreham
section of the Down’s Link is a new offering as the programme branches out a little geographically. Commenting on the new Health Rides Programme, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture Cllr Jonathan Chowen said: “One of our core aims as a council is to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents. “I am delighted that the Healthy Rides Programme was so well received last year and is set to start again for 2020. “Our District boasts some superbly scenic countryside and there’s no better way to see it than on two wheels and breathing in fresh air. And as for the health and fitness benefits, few activities can match the fun and low joint impact nature of cycling for achieving personal progress. “I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up and enjoy the considerable benefits of the Programme.” The Programme also includes two Starter Rides in Horsham Park designed to support and increase the confidence of people new to cycling, returning after a long break or unsure about the level of fitness required. prevent this heartache for families in the future.” Inspired Films Director, Louis Paltnoi, said: “We are delighted that this very special film has reached the Charity Film Awards shortlist. It’s particularly moving and memorable, thanks to the courage and openness of the Halse family and the tireless work of Action Medical Research to help prevent premature birth.” Simon Burton, Co-Founder of the Charity Film Awards, said: ‘In the digital age, charities’ use of video is fundamental to engage the hearts and minds of their communities. Elijah’s Story is a great example of that in action.”

The Mobile Community Lounge will be in regular attendance in local villages and at community events, enabling the Dandelion Farewells team to become a familiar friendly face that is on hand to help or answer any questions or concerns whenever they come up.” Sandra Donoghue, a Wisborough Green resident who attended the celebration said “I am so delighted to be here with Judith and to celebrate this five-year milestone with them. What Dandelion Farewells do when caring for the deceased and their family is extraordinary. When Phil my husband passed away, Judith and her team came to ‘take him into their care’ and it was unbelievably comforting to know that they believe the caring of a person and their body should not stop when they die. They made the impossible and unthinkable task of saying goodbye and arranging his funeral do-able, and I will always be so, so grateful for the care and
the dignity shown to us both. We are very lucky to have Dandelion Farewells in Wisborough Green and to have their support for the many village activities they are involved in, as well as the caring professional service they provide.” Talking at the event, Judith was full of praise for the help shown by everyone in Wisborough Green and the local village communities who play a key role in their wellbeing and success and said “I really thank you for all you have done over the past five years, and for the friendship and support you have shown to myself and my team. It makes a huge difference to us, especially as some days are tougher than others and your kindness and support really does help. Thank you for coming to share our celebration and for everything that you do.” For further information on the Community Connections programme, or to talk to someone regarding any aspect of funeral care or bereavement support, please contact office@dandelionfarewells.com or call 01403 701001.

Horsham resident wins £7,000 worth of business start-up assistance Horsham resident Hedley Woodman has been announced as the winner of Ignition – a campaign to help start-up businesses with £7,000 worth of time and resources from local industry professionals. Tracie Carter, from PMW Communications, said: “Hedley put forward a well-thought through and thorough business case, which was extremely well presented with attention to the finer details. Appeal to traders: tell us what you think of ‘sliding scale’ proposals for licensing tables and chairs on pavements Traders are being asked what they think of new proposals for the licensing of tables and chairs on the pavement outside their businesses. Following feedback on the current flat fee of £520, a consultation on sliding-scale proposals, with charges dependent on the number of covers, went live on Monday (27 January). Roger Elkins, Cabinet Member for Highways and Infrastructure, said: “We have listened to people’s comments about the current flat fee. Most suggested that a sliding-scale approach would be preferable - so smaller establishments would pay less compared to businesses which want to place a larger number of covers on the pavement. “We now propose a one-off, £150 initial application fee. Then the proposed charge would be £20 per cover (a cover is usually a single chair) per annum, which equates to just over 5p per day, per cover. We would really appreciate traders taking the time and trouble to visit our online consultation page www. westsussex.gov.uk/tablesandchairs2020 and let us know what they think of the proposals.” The sliding scale encourages businesses with a larger number of covers to carefully con-
sider how many covers they are likely to fill on a regular basis - or face paying a premium for empty chairs, which can obscure nearby smaller premises, obstruct the highway and provide an unnecessary obstacle for the visually impaired. The consultation runs until 24 February 2020. Horsham District Council has delegated authority to license tables and chairs in Horsham town centre and will continue to do so, so the results of the consultation will not immediately affect traders there. Some background: Placing tables and chairs on pavements increases traders’ floor space, helps businesses and can significantly enhance public spaces. However, if not properly placed, the furniture can cause an obstruction for passers-by, including the visually impaired. Highway officers carry out regular inspections to ensure the pavement is not unreasonably obstructed and remains safe for the public due to the increased wear caused by the movement of tables and chairs on the footway. The licence fee helps to cover the cost of staff time, administration and other associated costs.

Born in Brighton, long term resident of Storrington, Major John Roland Abbey developed a passion for books. His interest was in the physical object, the print, the colour pictures, how they were bound, their history and who owned them; everything, it would seem, bar the content. For Major Abbey, one of the world’s greatest book collectors, was dyslexic and could hardly write a sentence, though a Director of Kemp Town Brewery in Brighton. That didn’t stop him indulging in his passion and building up, at Greyfriars in Storrington, book collections that were internationally known. Now marking the 50th anniversary of his death on Christmas Eve 1969, Horsham Museum and Art Gallery are staging a display that explores this fascinating collector. Major Abbey, born in 1894, attended Windlesham School for a short while, before being sent by his parents to Mr Mowen’s school in Rottingdean; the world’s first school to specialise in dyslexia, after it had been recognised by Dr Pringle Morgan, of Seaford, in 1896. After serving in the First World War, where he was gassed, he joined his father’s company and, with it, had access to substantial wealth. His parents would eventually move, in 1931, to Sedgwick Park House. Ten years earlier, Major Abbey set up home in Storrington with his new bride, Lady Ursula Cairns. His wife loathed book collecting, as his hobby took over room after room in the house, though she showed great interest in the sales of his collection following his death, especially the profit
they made. As well as becoming renowned for his collection of colour plate books, which he sold to Paul Mellon (who would pass it to Yale and become part of the Yale Centre for British Art), Major Abbey loved book bindings. He commissioned the leading binders of the day and (such was his fame) immediately after World War Two, the Arts Council opened an exhibition, in France, of his bindings. This exhibition features a wall of pictures of his bindings that now belong to the late Sir Paul Getty’s KBE Wormsley Library. On display is a superbly bound copy of a history of Sussex bought by Abbey in 1941. On loan from Storrington based book dealer Colin Page, it glows with quality. Horsham Museum and Art Gallery recently acquired from Denmark two volumes of French book sellers catalogues probably bound by Abbey who took up the craft as a hobby. These are on display alongside books owned by Abbey that have his armorial book plate. The display at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum celebrates the life of a onetime resident of the District, who, through his library and the associated works of scholarship, has guided the development of libraries around the world. It is a fascinating story that is colourfully told in the exhibition J R Abbey - Horsham’s Greatest Book Collector on now until 28 March 2020. Horsham Museum is open 10am-5pm Monday-Saturday, excluding public holidays. Free admission. www.horshammuseum.org

Zog is roaring onto the Horsham stage next month! The smash hit stage adaptation from Freckle Productions (the team behind Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Tabby McTat) is flying across the UK and promises to be bigger, brighter and more roar-some than ever before. With brand new songs from Joe Stilgoe (The Jungle Book, The Midnight Gang) and directed by Emma Kilbey, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog is a magical production for all ages. Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is so eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know. evation remains in all its glory giving a welcoming first impression. There is a traditionally constructed oak framed porch, driveway park-
ing for several cars, tandem barn style garage and gated access to the rear garden. Access into the main accommodation is gained to the right hand side elevation through the oak framed porch into a spacious entrance vestibule, perfect for welcoming visitors with an abundance of space for coats and shoes as well as a ground floor shower room with W.C. In turn, double part glazed doors open into the expansive family room, which is an atmospheric contemporary space. It is a tempting place to enjoy the peace and while away an afternoon listening to music or reading. Equally, it is a fabulous space for entertaining; a really versatile area of the house. The sitting room has a log burner and views to open fields beyond the road from the front aspect windows. The drawing room is another front aspect room, currently used as an additional guest bedroom. It is convenient and useful for a house of this stature to have reception rooms which are separate and can be closed off from the large open plan areas. The biggest feature of the ground floor though, is the bright, airy kitchen diner with views through the westerly facing garden to the open fields beyond. If large family meals or gathering friends round the table are frequent highlights for you, this is absolutely perfect. The rear garden is mainly laid to lawn with an attractive Victorian brick wall to one side, large patio areas and there is a large barn style detached garage, which could easily become a home working environment, gym or annex. There is also a log store to the rear. To arrange an internal viewing call Chesworths Estates on 01403 255420

Great news for local cricketers – two evening competitions !
Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham Cricket Club’s Chris “Shaka” Shambrook is delighted to confirm that the highly successful, popular Gullick Cup will be run on exactly the same lines as last year with a Round Robin followed by a Cup and Plate Knock Out stage. Shaka says: “Its Gullick time again! Those that have chosen to enter the new Sussex Slam (see below) as well or instead of good luck and I hope you have your entry in. We will run The Gullick Cup as a separate entity – with the always entertaining Finals Night at Horsham Cricket Club in July. And, this year there is the added bonus of a route into the Slam Plate for the winner. You can still affiliate to the Slam Website and receive the fantastic deals
on branding/ kit/balls and player recruitment but it is not compulsory. Right now I just need your intention to enter the Gullick, polite exit if you are not or any ideas on any new teams that may want to join.” Shaka can be contacted at Horsham Cricket Club – 01403 254628 / 07740 795686 The other exciting mid-week T20 recreational competition – new for the 2020 season - is THE SUSSEX SLAM, described by Sussex Cricket as: “Fast, fun and convenient, perfect for busy people unable to commit to longer games, but still wanting to play organised, competitive cricket.” Matches will be no longer than 2.5 hours, fitting in after work on summer evenings - at any time within a two-week window to give sides ample opportunity to make arrangements, and administration can all be done on a mobile
phone. Player eligibility rules, bowler over-limits and not-out retirements for batsmen will encourage full participation and each side will be guaranteed at least four matches, initially in a group stage, keeping fixtures as localised as possible right through to Finals Day. As with top professional T20 leagues, every Sussex Slam team will have a bold, unique identity, with a nickname and individual logo, and an option to play in bespoke, affordable coloured kit. The Sussex Slam will be the second county-based ‘Slam’ competition, following the recent highly successful launch in neighbouring Surrey, when more than 1,200 players participated, with over 20% either new or returning to the game, with over 220 potential new players contacting teams
directly through the competition website following a targeted social media campaign, run centrally on behalf of all teams. Sussex Cricket is committed to providing the playing opportunities that meet players’ needs, hence The Sussex Slam. Rules will be kept under review via an online voting process, Sussex Cricket Foundation Territory Manager, Carl Tupper (07540 602825) saying: “We are always looking at new and exciting ways to allow more people to play cricket suitable to their lifestyle and are working closely to link in with and support existing midweek competitions, to facilitate more cricket. And, there will be the chance to play in Finals Day at Sussex’s Hove HQ - The 1st Central County Ground - a fantastic opportunity for recreational cricketers.” Sussex Slam Competition Manager,
Matt Camp says: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be working on this exciting competition. The Slam has been instantly successful in Surrey and we are acutely aware of the challenges in ensuring the growth of recreational cricket. The Slam is affordable, flexible, exhilarating, and convenient, for teams and players. I’m really looking forward to working with teams across Sussex to exceed the achievements of Surrey!” Shaka Shambrook adds: “I have been working to integrate our local Gullick Cup competition into the Sussex Slam and it has been agreed, that, with the continuing success of the Gullick Cup and Plate, it will become a regional feeder competition into the Slam Plate. The Mirfield Cup will be reinstated, under Slam rules, feeding into the Slam main draw. Teams are welcome to play in both, providing they meet the appropriate player qualifications. Regional finals will be played at Horsham CC and further details will follow, but, as always, we are looking to get as many people playing cricket as possible.” For full details of The Sussex Slam, including how to enter a team, visit www.sussexslam. co.uk. Back to back win for improving Horsham Photos by Nick Evans
Saturday January 25 – Premier – Division 2 East Purley Walcountians 1-2 Horsham
Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter The home encounter against Purley Walcountians was drawn
3-3 – Horsham dramatically clawing back a point after being three goals down, and in last Saturday’s away game Horsham were delighted to bag all three valuable points. Beefed up Horsham started well at Banstead, but Purley scored from a short corner against the run of play. Hor-
sham, though, soon equalised, Rob Turnbull celebrating his return to the team with a short corner flick, a skill that Horsham has sorely missed following Sean Pearcy’s departure to go travelling. The score remained 1-1 at half time, and, in the second half, Horsham dominated. A shot hit the post, then two strikes were cleared off the line. Two send offs – one apiece – then made it, temporarily, a ten man contest. But,
although Horsham were making slightly hard work of it, a goal seemed to be coming, and duly arrived with a roof bender when Ed Marsh finished off a good passing move, Horsham closing the game down to win 2-1. The game was marked with the debut of overseas player Matt Barnett. Canadian born Matt, who now resides in Melbourne, told the District Post: “I’ve played against Horsham on a previous visit and when the opportu-
nity came up to join the team I grabbed it with both hands and am really looking forward to trying to make a useful contribution in our survival bid.” On Saturday Horsham return home to play Old Georgians at Christ’s Hospital with a 2pm pushback. Horsham lost heavily to current runner up OGs at Addlescombe in October, joint league top scorer Jack Rednap notching up a hat trick. Wimbledon remain top, while, with eight games to play, Horsham are at the foot of the table with 7 points, behind Eastbourne and London Academicals, both on 14. Following their Christmas and New Year break, also on Saturday Horsham Ladies return to league action, against Wimbledon 2s at Christ’s Hospital, noon pushback. Meanwhile, Horsham cricketer James Brehaut, enjoying playing hockey for Horsham 2s says: “We were already top of the league and after we beat Lewes 4-1 (last Saturday) we’re three points clear. Former first team regular Jon Kimberley is having a great season for us, going past the 20 goal scoring mark!”

Be part of Horsham FC’s success story ! Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter “We’re punching above our weight and this is, without doubt, the most enjoyable season I’ve had as a manager,” says Hornets’ boss Dom di Paola, and certainly Horsham fans and visitors are enjoying the experience of coming to Horsham’s new Camping World Stadium. Around 10,000 spectators have clicked through the turnstiles so far in this first season at Hop Oast, and this support has been reflected throughout the club – in addition to the first team riding high in the BetVictor Isthmian League, the Under 23s are in the final of the county’s Challenge Cup and doing well in their league. The U11s have already won silverware and the U14s, U15s and U16s are all heading their divisions, with the U13s also well-placed for a title place in their league, and, amazingly, the U12s and U14s have Cup Final places to look forward to and the U14s and U16s are through to the Quarter Finals of the League Cup. Also, the U15s are one win away from their Final – all a very far cry from Horsham’s situation in the nomadic years that came to an end less than 12 months ago ! Chairman Kevin Borrett
is rightly thrilled with the fantastic progress made by the club in such a short space of time and asks for help to make things even better, saying: “The current challenge is how we operate the ground when we have crowds of 750+, which brings me to my request: we desperately need more volunteers, both on match days and behind the scenes. For first team home matches this includes stewards, manning the tea hut and other vital tasks that help to make the HFC experience so great. And, for our other teams and on club administration there are also many rewarding opportunities. The club’s activities and footprint are several times larger now than a year ago. To prosper and grow we need new helpers – could you be one? Or do you know someone who might? Enjoy your football!” If you are interested in contributing to and being part of the continuing, growing success of Horsham Football Club, then please make contact with the club. The office at Hop Oast is open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm – Horsham 458854 – admin@horshamfc.co.uk – or, just come along to a match and speak to a member of the committee in the board room

Horsham fight back with pulsating home draw Saturday January 25 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Horsham 3-3 Bishop’s Stortford Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Bishop’s Stortford, from the lower half of the table, beat Horsham 2-0 in the corresponding away fixture, and when they led 3-1 in the second half last Saturday there was a real threat that they would complete the double, but, to Horsham’s great credit, they kept battling, pulling off a well-deserved last ditch draw in the exciting four goal second half. The game started with Horsham Chairman Kevin Borrett presenting a silver salver to Gary Charman to mark his 600th game for the Hornets the previous week. Bishop’s Stortford have been a bogey side with six wins out of eight since the sides first met in 1965, but Horsham made the early running, Steve Metcalf’s cross cum shot being batted away by Bishop’s keeper Fred Burbidge. A breakaway visitors’ centre was cleared before Rob O’Toole hit the side netting and Lee Harding hooked one back to Burbidge. Bishop’s then had a free kick just outside the area, George Bentley in the Horsham goal having to punch away Shomari Barnwell’s attempt. The lively Greg Cundle challenged Burbidge ahead of Captain Jack Brivio’s long range shot going just over the top left of the goal. Cundle was also aerial,
Photo by John Lines until, mid way through the half, O’Toole rushed in to latch onto a Burbidge parry to put Horsham in front. More Cundle forays followed, but, with half time beckoning, Bishop’s equalised when Jamie Cureton’s exquisite lob sailed over Bentley. Horsham resumed in attacking mode, earning two corners, Lea Dawson and Harding heading over, before Brivio was also off target. Then, in the 53rd minute Bishop’s were awarded a penalty, Cureton’s kick going in off the post. Two Horsham corners, a long range Cundle strike and another Horsham corner followed as the Hornets pressed for parity. But, former England youth international Cureton notched up his hat trick, again from the spot to give Bishop’s a seemingly impregnable lead. Prolific Cureton,
45 in August, and now Bishop’s Manager, has played over 1,000 matches, including Premiership appearances for Norwich City. Unfazed, Horsham kept pushing, but two free kicks came to nought, until sub Chris Smith fashioned a brilliantly taken goal out of the blue. Two Horsham corners and three hand ball appeals were really putting Bishop’s under the cosh, Brivio blasting just wide before Alex Kelly was floored, O’Toole stepping up to give the Hornets a share of the points two minutes into added time. On Saturday, Horsham now fourth, and hoping that their poor run of away form is over, travel to old sparring partners Cray Wanderers, a point ahead of the Hornets having played one more game

Wednesday January 22 – Sussex U23s Challenge Cup Semi Final Loxwood U23 1-2 Horsham U23 Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Hats off to Horsham’s Under 23
heroes, who got through to the Sussex U23 Challenge Cup final by beating their opposite numbers from Loxwood at the Plaistow Road Recreation Ground on Wednesday last week. The young Hornets trailed 1-0 at the break, but after scoring two second half goals in double
quick time, they held off Loxwood’s strong side - containing five first team regulars - to win the fiercely-contested Semi Final. Loxwood got off to a positive start, a long range shot skimming the cross bar. Horsham
responded, but Harry Law’s set piece strike was too aerial, before Sam Gallagher’s attempt was also wayward. A more cautious period of play followed, with both sides sizing each other up without creating any real opportunities, Loxwood falling foul of the offside trap. Horsham did eventually threaten after Trent Fawcett had broken through, but his inviting cross was not accepted. Then, with half time beckoning and neither side looking too likely to score, suddenly a Loxwood free kick found its way back to Luke Floyd who unleashed a rocket clearing Horsham keeper Seb Jacobides to give the hosts the lead. On the resumption, Horsham U23 Manager Mark Hawthorne changed the format and the highly regarded Loxwood defence soon found themselves under pressure from Archie Goddard’s crosses, and, just past the 10 minute mark, the same player burst through with a left foot equaliser. Then, Loxwood were stunned when sub Kieran Holmes promptly gave Horsham the lead. But, there was no question of Horsham romping home as Loxwood pushed
hard and relentlessly to getting back on equal terms. Horsham, though, defended tigerishly, but, with Loxwood dominating, further changes were made in the Horsham line up, replacement keeper Lewis Blaney pulling off a superb save before rushing out to clear further danger. Horsham mounted the odd foray to keep Loxwood on their toes, while, in a major team effort, the junior Hornets’ defence kept the near neighbours at bay. Right on time Loxwood remonstrated for a penalty, but after consultation between the officials, Horsham were relieved when a set piece was awarded just beyond the area, and they celebrated when the clearance was accompanied by the ref’s whistle. Congratulations to both sides who gave their all to provide proper cup tie entertainment In the previous rounds Horsham saw off Arundel, Broadbridge Heath and Eastbourne Town, scoring 17 goals and conceding 6 in the process. In the Final at Sussex FA’s Lancing HQ on Tuesday February 11 (7.15pm), Horsham will play Langney Wanderers.

Broadbridge Heath’s young tyros worry high flying Horley Tuesday January 28 – Macron Store Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 2-2 Horley Town Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter On cold, dry Tuesday night, the first ever meeting between the two sides ended with a fair result, yet until the last ten minutes Broadbridge Heath’s young side kept third-placed Horley at bay, maintaining Heath’s slender lead from mid way through the first half. Manager-less Heath were suffering from injuries and non availability, depriving them of senior players and expectations were low, so this was a highly creditable Heath performance – especially as experienced key player Jamie Taylor was crunched and forced to sit out most of the game. An early long throw was put off for the first of
Robinson and Craig Goodsir keeping Horley on their toes with close and long range attempts, the first half ending with Heath one up. As anticipated, Horley came back out in attacking mode, only to be denied by Evento’s safe catching. Sam Jobbins then burst through for Heath, but nobody was in place to receive his cross. After Dale Burgess was miles off target for Horley, Heath sub Ben Whitely earned a corner, but it was wasted. Evento charged out, forcing the defence to race back to cover, the ball going upfield to Whiteley, whose rushed shot was well adrift. When a Horley corner was headed off the line, Heath mounted a foray, but Blake missed out. Another Horley corner was awarded, but Alex Barbary somehow tapped wide. Renato Carvalho tried – twice – to double Heath’s lead, but Horley came closer to scoring, Evento’s legs

Horley’s five first half corners. Mario Quissalla and James McGilligott then launched a pincer movement culminating in the visitors’ second corner, before, on ten minutes, Taylor was brought down on the half way line. Heath immediately attacked, but Jake Hull’s cross was caught by George Hyde in the Horley goal. Hyde’s opposite number, Conor Evento then had to rush out to head clear. Horley were having the lion’s share of possession, but Heath were defending tigerishly, until, mid way through the half, Heath broke through for Louis Blake to line up the ball and unleash a superb clean strike, putting Heath in front. Horley responded, but Russell Harvey blazed well over. A third Horley corner followed, then Kieran Laverley was thwarted by a brave save, Evento coming off his line. An excellent Horley build up went begging when Harvey fired wide, as did Laverley. Heath, though, were pressing for every ball, successfully negating two corners in quick succession ahead of Jamie

keeping out Laverley’s blast. Evento then had to punch clear before a Horley rocket went past the post. A long Horley throw in was hooked over, before Evento’s full length dive pushed the ball out to be scrambled home by former Heath favourite Ryan Brackpool in the 38th minute. A Horley free kick just outside the area was then banged in by Laverley with just three minutes of normal time remaining. But, to Heath’s great credit, they kept pressing and were rewarded in extra time when Jamie Robinson finished off an excellent move with a well taken goal for Heath to share the points at the end of the highly entertaining game. On Saturday Heath remain at their Countryside Stadium to play Saltdean United, jostling next to them in the lower half of the table. Then, on Friday 7th, Broadbridge Heath Football Club is holding a community evening giving their neighbours in the surrounding houses the opportunity meet each other in the welcoming clubhouse.
Horsham completed the double over long-time rivals Dartfordians with a 34-27 away win in Bexley, their sixth successive victory. The two clubs were in the doldrums in the mid 2000’s playing their rugby in the domestic Sussex and Kent leagues but since then they have both been upwardly mobile with three promotions into London 1 South. But, the Green and Whites are having the better of it at the moment having edged into the top half of the table, hot on the heels of Belsize Park in sixth place, whereas Dartfordians are in a battle for survival in the lower reaches. Again, Horsham were required to mount another comeback, this time from 12 points down. They dropped the ball from the kick-off and following the scrum the ball was spun wide for full back Joe Scott to run a nice line and open the scoring with a try in the corner. This was followed by a converted try from Alex Cappucio conceded from turnover ball, good direct running and offloads. Dartfordians, playing all the rugby, could have added a third try, and after 8 minutes were leading 12-0, but later regretted not killing Horsham off during their purple patch. The Green and Whites responded with a fine try when a strong first phase scrum and great line break by Harrison Sims saw him make a long pass to Max Paterson to use
his pace to score in the corner. Dartfordians came back with a penalty kick from Jonny Regnier before a several phase try was finished by Declan Nwachukwu from advantage played converted by Sims for Horsham to go into the half-time break 15-12 down. Paterson left the field following a first half knock, to be replaced by Josh Sudder. Horsham scored three tries in quick succession and were now hitting their stride. Good direct rugby saw the rewind of the ball and after Sims dummied inside he finished well out wide. He was then unsuccessful with his conversion attempt hitting the post but, after 43 minutes, Horsham had taken a lead – 17-15 - for the first time in the game. A great first phase try from a scrum and a backs set piece move saw Marcus Condon finish well for the four try bonus point, and then the Green and Whites scored another first phase try scored from scrum ball in Horsham’s own half spun wide, Sudder running in from 20 metres. Kieran Clarke responded for Dartfordians with a try scored from a line-out drive but Nwachukwu finished off any likelihood of the visitors losing the game with Horsham’s sixth try following good scrum ball and a missed tackle in midfield to race away to score converted by Sims to lead 34-20. There was still time for Dartfordians man of the match Scott to weave through the Horsham defence to score his second try and the hosts hammered away in the face of a strong Horsham defence in attempt to score a converted
try to level the scores - forcing a yellow card to Josh Earle - but ran out of time. Horsham Head Coach Nick Stocker said: “For the third week in succession we allowed the opposition to get their tails up and create a two-score lead. Dartfordians started at a fast pace playing good offloading rugby and with the journey still in our legs, we did well to contain the start. As our set piece started to fire, so too did our patterns of play and by halftime we were the more composed and right back in it. A quick-fire salvo just after halftime of hard running rugby from set piece and great lines in the backs saw us gain the lead and never look back. Particularly pleasing was the way we adapted to the changes in the squad with all players contributing well. The forwards were again excellent in their set piece providing the back line with a great platform to launch attacks. Indeed, with two 18 year olds and three 19 year olds in the backs together with Declan at the grand old age of 22, the potential in the back line is frightening. Whilst there were lots of good performances today, man of the match went to Will Grief for his all-round game which saw him play in both back row positions, at 12, wing and even full back. He was a handful with his carrying, great in the tackle and made telling contributions throughout. “Next week we welcome Thurrock against whom we had the tightest of finishes last time. Without doubt they will be up for this return and it promises to be a very entertaining match.”
