Horsham’s food & drink showcased at Big Nibble festival Walking fruit salads, aperitifs in the afternoon, gin launches and a debut appearance for a fruit and vegetable band – it could only be at Horsham’s Big and Little Nibble 2019 food and drink festival. Food and drink lovers united at last weekend’s (31 August and 1 September) Big Nibble food and drink celebration in Horsham Town Centre, an annual two day event organised by Horsham District Council, Horsham Markets and partners, sponsored by NFU Mutual Henfield. The festival proved even more varied, gregarious and popular than ever, attracting hundreds of visitors and benefitting lots of local businesses to help boost the local economy. On Saturday, The Big Nibble featured a fantastic selection of stalls; The Food and Drink Safari in the Carfax, Horsham General Market in the Bishopric and a Craft Village in the Market Square. This year, in keeping with a strategy to diversify the appeal of the town’s events, Sunday

Community step up to the Climate Crisis

introduced a fresh focus for the Little Nibble presenting a broad range of food and drink interests as well as a generous slice of foodie related entertainments to keep both our younger and older visitors engaged. The Live Cookery Theatre in the Amphitheatre in the Carfax ran over both days, expertly curated and compered by the evergreen Sussex Food guru, Hilary Knight. A brilliantly eclectic programme of food producers, street food entrepreneurs and top young restaurant chefs were complemented by author presentations and the return of the outstanding singing chef, Jon Nulty to close the demos each day. On Saturday, Aperitifs in the Afternoon, a new feature with Crates Local and Cabin Pressure Gin combining to launch their new Horsham Serpent Gin followed by Luke from The Horsham Cellar, celebrating the first birthday of his business with an insight into the wonders of Spanish Vermouth. With climate change in the news daily, heatwaves, the hottest July date ever recorded, wettest August and now the Amazon ablaze, who would blame people to despair? Help is at hand to Horsham District residents, on the first Saturday of every month at the Horsham Repair Café. Not only do the volunteers offer repairs, refills and recycling advice, but they give clean energy advice and switching and climate change solutions. Governments have been talking about climate change since the early ‘90s; it is only now, in 2019, that we are seeing fast escalating action, with more than half the UK’s principal local authorities having declared a climate emergency in the last eight months. The Horsham Repair Café, run by Sussex Green Living with the help of the Horsham Quakers and lots of volunteers, are stepping up to this climate crisis. Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District. Horsham District Council’s Homeless team launched a new initiative in partnership with local community group Horsham Matters and non-profit organisation Greater Change to help combat homelessness in the Horsham District earlier in July this year, giving local residents and visitors a more effective way of donating directly to people living on the streets. Other outlets who have signed up for the new donation scheme include: The Capitol Theatre and Crates Local Produce. Greater Change is a homelessness non-profit service which makes it possible for people to donate cashlessly to homeless individuals to help them achieve their longer term goals and rebuild their lives. The service is facilitated by community group Horsham Matters who nominate individual rough sleepers and refer them to the Greater Change organisation. Homeless individuals, with help

from Horsham Matters, set tangible funding goals for what they need to achieve: a rent deposit, fees for a training course or perhaps help to buy furniture when they find accommodation. Contactless donation points have been set up by the Council in areas that benefit from high footfall such as public buildings, shops and cafes. All people need to do to donate is to tap their debit or credit card or via Apple Pay to the donation terminal and their money will go directly to Greater Change where it will start to benefit the homeless in the Horsham District. Commenting on the new donation scheme and its early success, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing Cllr Tricia Youtan said: “We know that people who live in and visit the Horsham area want to help rough sleepers and many are really generous to people on the streets. “However, it is important that their money goes to the most appropriate channels where it can be used most effectively and this new scheme helps direct the money ex-

Fire at Horsham restaurant News Martin Read - Reporter

Responding to an emergency call regarding an ongoing blaze in the early hours of Wednesday morning, fire engines attended Horsham’s Smith & Western restaurant to find the premises engulfed in flames. A statement from West Sussex Fire & Rescue reads: “We received a call at 01.23am on Wednesday reporting a fire at a restaurant on North Parade, Horsham. Two appliances from Horsham Fire Station were initially sent and arrived within four minutes. Upon arrival a further four appliances were requested, which attended from Crawley, Henfield and Billingshurst. The restaurant was well alight and {the fire} had spread to a neighbouring domestic property. Excellent work from the crews limited the spread of fire and contained the damage to an external food store and 10 per cent of the neighbouring property. Tackling the fire, the crews used six sets of breathing apparatus, two jets and two high pressure hose reels. They also used two thermal imaging cameras to identify any hotspots. Firefighters returned to the scene at 7.30am to reinspect.” Shellie Cox, owner of Smith & Western, paid tribute to the prompt attention of the Fire Service, saying that the damage was restricted within the location of the bin store:

their cowboy style interiors specialise in authentic style American wild west dishes – notably featuring grills, ribs and steaks and the Horsham outlet opened some 25 years ago on the site of the former Hop Picker pub, which had in turn replaced an older hostelry – The White Hart. Following statements that the owners of the restaurant have found trading on the site a

challenge due to its location away from the centre of Horsham, causing them to look at possible alternative locations to accommodate the restaurant more centrally, planning application DC/19/1527 has been submitted to Horsham District Council to demolish the restaurant and erect a block of flats on the land. The proposal has drawn objections from home own-

ers in the vicinity, concern being expressed regarding the intended loss of the Smith & Western facility from its present position, and further parking in an area of busy, narrow roads with tight corners. The intended size of the new building also raised worries over potential loss of privacy, along with the additional demand it might place on services.

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance. The town centre was resplendent with exciting displays spreading from Park Place, Piries Place and East Street through the Carfax and the Forum to the Bishopric. Highlights of the day were many and varied, ranging from the lights and sounds of the 16 American Police Car group in East Street to the fabulous ‘Eight Beat Jive’ and Fi Steps Dance School dancing outside The Crown Pub. Other highlights included the Transformers vehicles in the Jubilee Car Park next to the Rec Rooms, a Blues Brothers Tribute band and a triumphant third year finale by The Almost Elvis Band, which saw the whole crowd of spectators on their feet singing and dancing. The outdoor show culminated in a roaring ‘Cruise Out’ thanks to display escorts, SERV Sussex,

which brought together all of the vehicles from their displays around the town into one riotous colourful parade through the Carfax and North Street, appreciated by hundreds of onlookers lining the streets in the now time honoured Horsham car festival tradition. Afterwards, the party continued indoors with Odyssey featuring at The REC Rooms and an Elvis act at The Crown Pub. Organisers Horsham District Council would like to thank all of their partners and sponsors who worked together to make the event happen including; Oddballs Car Club, Pilgrim Motorsports of Small Dole, Guildford Harley Davidson, Horsham JEEP, Food Rocks and Coden Events, Corvette Club UK, Mid-Surrey Roadsters, Motion Picture Motors, Berkeley Homes, Freeman Brothers, Sussex Thunder AFC, Super Hero Parties, The Almost Elvis Band, Blueprint Blues Brothers, The Rec Rooms, The Crown and all of the musicians and performers, the event traders and food concessions.

Novartis site gets green light martin read Reporter

At the Horsham District Council meeting on October 16 contentious outline plans were approved to build up to 300 homes. The former Novartis site, Horsham’s Enterprise Park , approval was granted as “the proposal would bring forward the development of a strategic site allocated for mixed use within the Horsham District Planning Framework. The proposal would provide much needed high quality employment space as well as an appropriate residential area. The proposal utilises a brownfield site in a central and sustainable location, resulting in the regeneration of this strategic town centre site.” That the substantial site needs to be re-developed in a way that provides both significant employment opportunities and new homes, 35% of which to be classified as ‘affordable’, was not in dispute. However, there were considerable reservations about the proposals because of concerns regarding the impact that an estimated 900 cars (600 from the envisaged 1,700 employees, plus 300 from around 690 residents) would have on the already busy, narrow neighbourhood roads, Wimblehurst Road and North Heath Lane being regarded as among the most congested streets in Horsham. It was felt that road safety issues had not been addressed critically, Jane Apostolou, Chair of the

Wimblehurst Road Residents’ Association saying: “The quality of life for residents is still the most important thing,” adding that re-development “should be done appropriately.” The original intention was to convert the site into a university campus or “world renowned” science park, but that failed to materialise. At the peak of occupation by pharmaceutical company Novartis they had some 1,400 staff, but the provision of 300 houses, plus additional facilities, probably including a café, crèche and nursery and a convenience store would increase the traffic to and from the site. While there is potential for improvement schemes, and some remodelling, possibly to encourage cycling, a monitoring scheme being proposed, further assessment is considered necessary, particularly regarding use of the site as a local short cut. Initially a pedestrian bridge over the railway line was mooted, but the probable £5 to £6million cost, plus land possession and ongoing maintenance, renders the prospect unlikely. The location is well served by established key bus routes, but the introduction of the high volume of additional vehicles remains a major concern, contesting the consultant’s view that “it is unlikely that the development would cause an unacceptable impact on highway safety”. Cabinet Member for Planning, Claire Vickers regretted that limited traffic investigation had been conducted, but considered that the development would be benefi-

veloper who would concentrate on erecting even more housing units to the exclusion of job creation. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith pointed out that: “The residential element is needed to make the plans viable, including the provision of community

Auction of local hospice’s heart sculptures raises over £50,000 St Catherine’s Hospice HeART to Heart trail, headline sponsored by Thakeham, brought joy to parks, high streets, shopping centres and cultural venues across Surrey and Sussex throughout the summer. But the popular trail came to a thrilling end on Wednesday (30 October) when the 26 beautiful heart sculptures, were sold at an exclusive auction. Over 100 people came together to place a bid on a heart they loved, to try to make it theirs forever. There was plenty of competitive bidding and in total more than £50,000 was raised. Ellie Our Angel attracted the highest bid on the night, selling for £12,000. And For the Love of Nature and Doreen also proved popular, selling for £10,000 and £4,000. Welland Medical were thrilled to win the Bee Kind heart. Chris Primett, Managing Director, said, “St. Catherine’s has been our company’s charity for over 10 years and many of our employees have a special connection with their unique work. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he

cial overall. Others called for the rejection of the proposals pending further investigation, but some councillors envisaged that refusal might cause site owners West Sussex County Council – who had purchased the site for £16million - to dispose of the land to a de-

spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” Matt Turner was also a winning bidder of two hearts – Keepsake and Abstract Love. He said “I’m an art enthusiast so I was very keen to own some of these amazing works of art. My wife was fan of Keepsake; we’ve only been married a year and I wanted to treat her. I chose Abstract Love as it will look fantastic in the office.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. Hugh said, “I’ve led hundreds of auctions but it was wonderful to be a part of something that has clearly meant so much to the local community. Each of the hearts had its own story to tell and I’m thrilled that we were able to raise so much money for such a worthy cause.” Hannah Liles, St Catherine’s

At around 9pm last Friday police were called to a stabbing incident in an especially violent fight outside the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham town centre, following which a 20 year old Crawley man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The area was cordoned off, the pub closed and dispersal, and emergency stop and search powers implemented, Sussex Police issuing a statement saying that a 55 year old man arrested on suspicion of affray has been released on bail until November 29th and two other men, one aged 26 and the other 38, who were also arrested, both for possible involvement and possession of an offensive weapon, have been released without further action. This is the second Horsham knife attack in less than a fortnight. In the previous stabbing – in the skate park in Horsham Park – a 16 year old boy was the victim of an attempted robbery of his jacket, sustaining a serious stomach wound requiring urgent admission to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital. A 19 year old man was also taken to hospital after receiving blows to his face. The incidents are all the more shocking because Horsham has long since been regarded as a

pleasant, relatively crime free town where families feel safe. But, it has become clear that the district is not immune from the national trend of increasing knife crime, triggering the perceived need to carry a blade for self protection, only serving to exacerbate the problem. In the wake of the Park attack worried parents went on social media demanding enhanced lighting and security cameras, a Council spokesperson responding with: “The Council was very sorry to hear of the disturbing and traumatic events in the Park and has been fully co-operating with the police investigation. The skate park area is lit until 10pm and is covered by a CCTV camera. Other areas of the Park are also covered by the Public Space CCTV Network and these cameras are fully functioning during the day and after dark. Additionally, the Council’s security contractor and neighbourhood wardens patrol the site, inspecting and deterring any anti-social behaviour.” And, after Friday’s town centre attack, Horsham’s police commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeater confirmed that officers would be maintaining a presence to reassure residents, adding: “We need the community’s support to help tackle this unacceptable behaviour by reporting matters of concern – either online at www. police.uk/contact/af/contact-us/, by calling 101, quoting Operation Evesham, or by contacting the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The police are especially interested to hear from anyone who was in Horsham on Friday night and saw anything of what happened in the attack outside the Lynd Cross pub. Fortunately, the victims of both attacks are showing good signs of

recovery, but that does not lessen concern, Councillor Christine Costin saying: “We want Horsham to be a safe and happy place. A lot of people are nervous to go out and that’s not how we want Horsham to be – other people are going to

Latest major retailers sign up to help local rough sleepers

Horsham’s branches of John Lewis and Waitrose added their names to a growing list of local outlets who have signed up to help support rough sleepers across the Horsham District.

At the well attended Horsham District Council Meeting on January 30th – when the room was too full to accommodate late comers – it was confirmed that an independent report would be commissioned to ascertain the future sustainability of Horsham’s Drill Hall and that in the absence of a viable plan emerging within two years then the building would be decommissioned and replaced with affordable flats. As separate issues, the provision of the new Highwood Community facility was approved and it was announced that there would be public consultation regarding the possible provision of major housing schemes at various substantial sites around the district. The consultations will run for six weeks from February 17th to March 30th at venues in and around the district, including Horsham’s Swan Walk.

Leisure and Culture explained: “The building is 93 years old and, La Piazzetta Horsham while it has been well-mainLa Piazzetta OFF Horsham £10 CAR MOT* American Show tained, it is old fashioned and not well configured. Usage is low, there is a lack of day time parking and it is just a big hall, rather than a community centre.” But, he agreed that the Drill Hall is in an historic part of Horsham and has a fondly-respected heritage, adding: “It is a great venue for big events, with extensive space, but it is difficult to use and is not easy to market, competing against other locations in the town. Also, while residents have considerable attachment to the building, it needs up-dating and renovation, including to conform with environmental aspects, at a probable outlay of over £1 million and costs around £45,000 to run annually.” Other speakers, including the Chairs of neighbouring councils, made the following points – the blackest possible picture has been painted about the Drill Hall - it is the only large open floor space in the town centre and removing it would leave a large vacuum. It brings people into the town, sometimes staying overnight for big events. Continued on page 3 “The fire started in the bin storage area after the staff had locked up. I can’t thank the fire brigade enough for what they did to control the fire. We’ll have to close for around a week because the electric box near the bin area caught fire. We have emergency technicians on the scene and hope to be back open soon.” The Smith & Western chain with

their cowboy style interiors specialise in authentic style American wild west dishes – notably featuring grills, ribs and steaks and the Horsham outlet opened some 25 years ago on the site of the former Hop Picker pub, which had in turn replaced an older hostelry – The White Hart.

Third Horsham AmeriCARna festival hailed roaring success

Visitors to Horsham’s AmeriCARna festival at the weekend (Sunday 29 September) enjoyed an amazing spectacle of American themed car and bike displays, food and drink, and song and dance.

Carrie the co-founder of the Horsham Repair Café, and founder of Sussex Green Living, said: “Switching to clean energy is part of the solution within everyone’s grasp and is the biggest action anyone can take in the fight against climate change”. spent designing products to help improve the lives of others.

This year on Safer Internet Day (Tuesday 11 February), Horsham District Council will be sharing tips and advice on how to keep young people safe online. The global theme of the campaign is ‘together for a better internet’, with a focus on how young people explore and express their identity online. Tricia Youtan, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing, commented: “We all read about how young people can be targeted or bullied online, or perhaps have access to inappropriate material, so it’s important for us to know how to talk to them to keep them safe.”

There are things that you can do as a family to ensure young people stay safe while still having an online presence. The following are some suggestions on how to help you and your family stay safe and positive online. Talk regularly with your child about how they use technology, how they like to express themselves online and how being online makes them feel. Listening to your child will give you the best possible idea of how you can support them. The internet allows lots of different people to communicate and come together. It might be the first place your child encounters people who are differ-

ent to them, or it may be the one place where they can find people similar to them. Discuss diversity and inclusivity with your child, and talk to them about being respectful to everyone online. And make sure they understand how important it is to let you know if they are being abused or bullied online. Tools like parental controls can help you manage the devices used by your family and protect your child from seeing inappropriate content. It is natural to worry about the risks posed by your child being online, but the internet is now a part of everyone’s lives. Get involved by spending time with your child interacting with the things they do online. Talk to them about safe choices they can make, rather than overwhelming them with restrictions. It can sometimes feel like young people are the experts in all things digital, but remember – you are the life experts. The steps you can take to support your child online include using privacy settings on social media. You don’t need to know all the answers straightaway, but reassure your child that you can figure it out together. For more support and tips, visit www.saferinternetday.org.uk

generating a bid for city status?” and “First the Drill Hall and now Rookwood. Information is dribbling out piecemeal – we need a complete list of the property and land that the Council owns, together with proper detail about their development ideas, both regarding their own acquisitions and elsewhere around the district.”

Other possible development sites have been highlighted in a wide range of locations, including Adversane, Billingshurst, Kingsfold, Mayfield, Southwater, West Grinstead and West of Crawley, which could amount in total to the provision of almost 30,000 new homes. In addition to ongoing proposals, including the former Novartis site,

land near the Boars Head pub and the possibility of Horsham Golf & Fitness Village, there is also a Council list of potential smaller developments in neighbouring villages. Following cabinet meetings to discuss and approve a draft local plan, the intention is to publish details for consultation between mid February to the end of March.

Coming hot on the heels of Horsham District Council’s expressed wish to demolish Horsham’s historic Drill Hall to provide further flats, a new bombshell has emerged – the suggested conversion of the much-appreciated, popular Rookwood Golf Course for yet more housing – with perhaps 1,000 new homes, a primary school, a community hub and retail units coming on stream in 2022/23. On its website, Rookwood describes and prides itself as being very well maintained and “one of the best pay and play courses in the south”, saying that the accolade is based on customer feedback, there being excellent testimonials on the website. The complex is run “working in partnership with Horsham District Council” and in addition to the main golf course with its “gently undulating park land and mature woodland with a number of large lakes” the facilities include Pitch & Putt, Foot Golf, foot and drink, and the premier Warnham Barn function venue. With demands on the government to provide solutions to address the national housing shortage, Horsham District Council is under pressure to meet increasing targets and is developing a plan to pinpoint potential large sites around the district for development, nine suggested locations coming into consideration, opening up the possibility of substantial residential developments on picturesque green field areas yet to be formally committed. There will be public consultation, meanwhile, the Council is recommending the Rookwood Golf Club proposal by mentioning that it is inside the A24 with easy road and

rail access and stating its “close links to the existing built form of Horsham town” and justifying the scheme because, while the golf course provides leisure and recreational opportunities, demand is falling - an argument used regarding the demolition of the Drill Hall - with pay and play facilities available elsewhere. It is also said that green spaces would be incorporated “with landscaping throughout”, thereby compensating for the loss of the rural features, including the wildlife habitat. It is stated that biodiversity net gains will be forthcoming and that the adjacent Warnham Local Nature Reserve together with the historic mill building “will continue to be protected”, and the developer would be employing very high quality design with views incorporated throughout the development, seeking to provide a character-full, permeable and liveable community.” As in the case of the Drill Hall, your District Post conducted a straw poll, and here are some comments from concerned local residents: “There is a communication issue and a problem of trust – I naively thought that the Council would be securing, and safeguarding our prized assets for the good of our community, but it now seems that there is a sinister sub plot”, and “Is the Council a council, or a secret property company trying to railroad through highly contentious schemes?” Further comments included: “What is going to happen to the money generated – more land grabs for future sell offs?” – “We chose to live in Horsham because it was a nice, compact country town – not a sprawling metropolis with huge feature-less estates” - “Is the Council giving in to government demands too readily, or are they on an ego trip,

Continued from front page It was also said that replacing the Drill Hall with only 20 flats would not be a good use of such a large site. Others felt that affordable flats in the town centre would be welcomed, while a lone opponent of retention of the Hall felt that if it was so valuable why is it not more widely used? And, considering the refurbishment costs it is not appropriate to keep it. However, well over 5,000 people have signed the Save the Drill Hall petition. At the meeting, concerns were expressed over the way in which the Drill Hall demolition proposal was handled, leading to fears whether other prized assets are on an HDC hit list, and emphasising that the Council is guardian of community properties, and the repair of trust is now necessary. In an impassioned letter, Horsham resident Tammara Payen encapsulated some of the strongly held local opinions, recalling many pleasant activities at the

venue saying: “The Drill Hall is the heart of Horsham. I moved here because I wanted to live in a beautiful, vibrant town rich in history, to bring up my children in a strong local community. If these {community} things start to dissolve, the town will not be able to sustain what makes it so special and attractive.” Other initiatives to preserve the Drill Hall are under active consideration - Councillor Christian Mitchell has intimated that he knows of someone who might be prepared to take over ongoing management of the facility, while another emerging group committed to its retention has told the District Post: “We plan to save the Drill Hall. Various plans to do this are being discussed. First off we’d like to increase the usage.” The Council meeting can be heard via the following link https://horsham.moderngov.co.uk/ieListDocuments. aspx?CId=132&MId=1668

Money Advice Service in West Sussex helps users claim millions in extra benefits A free money advice service in West Sussex, for people aged over 50, has helped residents claim more than £2.5m in additional benefits since April last year. A total of £2,578,261 in additional benefits have been received by county residents aged over 50 between April and the end of December last year, after they received the help of the Age UK West Sussex Money Advice Service. The Service is an impartial and

confidential service which offers advice in a range of areas including pensions, benefits, managing debt and budgeting. It is being promoted in conjunction with the Council’s Age Well campaign, which aims to help people stay well, healthy and independent as they grow older. The Money Advice Service is part of the Carewise care funding advice scheme – a partnership between West Sussex County Council, Age UK West Sussex,

the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) and West Sussex Partners in Care. Older residents are being encouraged to take advantage of the free service, which can help them manage their finances and find out if they are eligible for any extra income that they might not be claiming. Alan Jordan, 81, from Petworth, is someone who has benefitted from the Age UK West Sussex Money Advice Service. He received their help when he was

caring for his late wife Doris, who built up significant debts while she was living with dementia. As well as getting those debts written off, advisors also helped Alan successfully apply for benefits such as a carers allowance, which he was unaware he was eligible for. Alan said: “I didn’t expect to get paid to look after Doris. Although we’d been married for a long time, I didn’t expect that I could claim money for helping to look after her in our own home, but I did. “A lot of people might not know that this service exists, but if you are worried and struggling with money issues, give Age UK West Sussex a call. Don’t be frightened to ask for help, because it is there for us.” Older residents are now being encouraged to take advantage of the free service which can help them manage their finances and find out if they are eligible for extra income which they might not be claiming, such as Pension Credit. Amanda Jupp, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Managing money carefully and successfully is a key part of ageing well. It can help us get the

most out of life as well as give us peace of mind. One Good Friday 2020 - Horsham Passion Play Cast from One Good Friday 2020 – Horsham Passion Play toured Horsham town centre on Saturday (1 February) to recruit Roman soldiers and promote the performances taking place on Good Friday (10 April) at 12noon and 3.15pm. Wintershall has performed The Passion of Jesus in Trafalgar Square since 2010 on Good Friday, attracting over 20,000 visitors, every year. This year’s Good Friday will see the Passion Play performed in London, and across other UK locations, including two performances in Horsham’s Carfax, where a local cast will present the much-loved production at 12 noon and 3.15pm. The Horsham Passion Play will be an unforgettable Easter experience - an awe-inspiring full-scale re-enactment of the Passion featuring realistic scenes and a moving crucifixion and resurrection. The Passion Play’s Christian message embraces all denominations, but is also for those of different faiths or none. It is both educational and historical, and an opportunity to tell the real story of Easter to a whole new audience. The Director of Horsham’s

Passion Play, Sarah Holloway said: “More than ever our nation needs unity and hope. I’m honoured for the opportunity to be part of a project that has the potential to unite our community, by joining together to retell such a poignant story that embraces and delivers hope, in such a time as this. The lead actor, Peter Bergin, was the understudy for James Burke-Dunsmore who plays the part of Jesus in The Passion of Jesus at Trafalgar Square. Peter said: “I am really enjoying working with such an amazing cast and crew and am looking forward to bringing the story to life in the centre of Horsham. The entire production is a community effort with contributions from churches and other community partners, along with Horsham District Council. Rehearsals have been underway twice weekly since the beginning of the year. Other Passion Play locations (Havant and Tonbridge, and the Passion Trust) have been tremendously generous, lending costumes and props for the production. Other costumes and props are being made by willing volunteers and partners such as

Men in Sheds. On Good Friday, the event starts at 10.30am with scenes taking place around Horsham town centre including real horses and a donkey, and marching Roman soldiers. Big Church Day Out will be providing music on the Carfax Bandstand, with the Passion Plays taking place at 12noon-1.30pm, and 3.154.45pm. This is a free all-day event for everyone to enjoy. If you are interested in taking part as a Roman soldier, please contact Producer, Rosemary Couchman at horsham@ onegoodfriday.com or 07566 202741. www.onegoodfriday.com/ horsham www.facebook.com/ OGFHorsham

Christ’s Hospital Pupils invite schools to attend first Mental Health Conference Senior pupils at Christ’s Hospital, near Horsham, are holding the School’s first ever pupilled Conference on the topic of Mental Health and Well-being, on Thursday 13 February 2020 and are inviting other schools to attend. The schedule will run from 1:30-6pm and includes a special keynote speaker and workshops run by mental health professionals, as well as refreshments throughout the day and a chance for guests to watch the school’s famous band parade. pupil conference Independent and state schools from all over southeast England are invited to attend; the list of attendees already includes representatives from 14 schools, including Tonbridge, Eton, Ardingly School, Haileybury School, Whitgift School, The Weald, Cranleigh School, The College of Richard Collyer, Dulwich College and Seaford College. The event is being organised by a group of 19 monitors (prefects) at Christ’s Hospital, with minimal help from staff. The group decided to take action after they noticed that there are no such mental health/well-being

conferences being run for the primary benefit of students and young people, although many already existed for teachers and adults. They found this to be deeply concerning, particularly as it is such a topical issue. Andre Da Silva-Jenkins, Senior Grecian (Head Pupil) explained: “We view this conference as a means through which we might take action; our own small way of making a difference in the world. To put it in simple terms, we want to seek out solutions as opposed to merely highlighting problems. “Well-being support is continuously discussed here at Christ’s Hospital, but this year, we wanted to make this discussion inclusive of other schools too. We are therefore very excited to host our 2020 Mental Health Conference, in which we hope to lead and promote conversation about self-care.” The keynote speaker will be Suzi Godson, The Times newspaper’s sex and relationships columnist, award-winning author, blogger and founder of MeeTwo – an app which provides a safe and secure forum for teenagers wanting to discuss any issue

affecting their lives, where they can receive anonymous help and advice from both mental health experts as well as other teenagers going through similar experiences. Attendees will also benefit from three separate workshops run by registered mental health professionals and experts from three different charities covering a range of mental health topics, offering expert advice for dealing with such issues. The day will conclude with a stimulating, interactive panel discussion/plenary session featuring several student representatives across several schools. There will also be an opportunity for a brief Q & A session with the keynote speaker and the mental health experts who are running the workshops. There will be refreshments available throughout the day. The invitation extends to a maximum of two members of staff and three students from each school. Young Sports Stars Recognised at Set4Success Awards Outstanding young sportsmen and women were recognised at the annual Set4Success awards, held at Christ’s Hospital School on Friday, 31 January. Twenty-four applicants representing sports ranging from football, netball and hockey to baseball, synchronised swimming and motocross received a Set4Success award, which includes a financial contribution towards coaching and expenses, as well as free use of fitness facilities, courtesy of Places Leisure. Set4Success is a charitable organisation created by the Rotary Club of Horsham in 2010, run in partnership with representatives of Horsham District Council, schools, businesses and sports and leisure providers. To be eligible for an S4S award, candidates must be 11 to 18 years old, live or attend school in the Horsham district and be competing at a high level. To date, the charity has supported more than 200 young people, with previous winners including hockey player Lucy Wood, a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, and golfer Marco Penge, now playing on the PGA EuroPro Tour. This year’s recipients are: Fynn Talley (football), Gavin Cherubini and Ace White (Muay Thai), Andrew Harrison (badminton), Esme King (motocross), Jodie Cherubini (Brazilian jiu jitsu), Madeline Giller (netball), Isabella Hayes (triathlon), Cecily Turner (water polo), Charlie Denton (karate), Emily Oliver (pentathlon), Alex Richer (cross country/athletics), Mame Sow (athletics), Leo Walker (shot put/discus), Anna Sayers and Millie Weeden (swimming), Siena Keijasers (hockey), Cameron Weir and Albert Maskell (frisbee), Ranjuo Tomblin and LeAnne Tomblin (synchronised swimming), Maddy Barnes (shooting) and Louis Dean (baseball). Set4Success also presents an award for Outstanding Achievement, sponsored by Christ’s Hospital School. This year’s recipient is Fynn Talley, currently on a two-year apprenticeship at Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The goalkeeper has represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level. Fynn was away with his club, so his parents attended on his behalf. Hosting the ceremony, S4S Committee Member Mike Sutton paid tribute to the charity’s founder John Le Rossignol: “John was a big man with a big heart. We would not be sitting here without him and the 140 previous award winners would not have been recognised without his vision. One week before John passed away, last year’s Outstanding Achievement winner, Emily Orman, signed her first professional contract with Chelsea, which is John’s team. I can’t think of a more fitting way to represent his legacy to Set4Success.” Mike Sutton also praised the young recipients for their dedication and commitment:“Despite the many advancements and support available to young people today, life is faster, busier and if you want to reach the pinnacle of sport, is far more competitive

and intense than it once was. There are more distractions, greater expectations and increased pressure. Those of you receiving awards should not only be proud of your achievements, but conscious of the responsibility you have in being role models to your peers. In a world obsessed with instant gratification, you are the embodiment of resilience, creativity, aspiration and a growth mind-set.” Further motivation was provided by guest speaker and Set4Success patron, Mike Goody. As a teenager, Mike was a talented swimmer, competing at a national level until he quit to pursue a career in the Armed Forces. Serving in Afghanistan in 2008, Mike was struck by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, ultimately losing a leg. He struggled to cope mentally with the changes in his life, suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. However, his love of swimming helped him turn his life around. Mike swam the English Channel and went on to win sixteen medals at the Invictus Games. Mike said: “The RAF Regiment motto is ‘Per Ardua’, Latin for ‘Through Adversity’. Little did I know when joining that this motto would define my life. Hopefully, none of you will ever have to deal with anything as extreme as I endured, but whatever you face, don’t give up! Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising when we fall.” Set4Success can only exist through the generosity of local businesses and sponsors, including Christ’s Hospital, Horsham Rotary Club, Horsham District Council, Places Leisure, Wakefields Jewellers, AAH Magazine, Impact Specialist Finance, Kreston Reeves and Treetop Design and Print. In partnership with the Council’s Sports Development team, Set4Success organises inter-business sporting challenges throughout the year. The 2020 programme includes table tennis, archery, five-a-side football and ultimate frisbee. Council to crack down on illegal puppy farms due to new Lucy’s Law Horsham District Council as a licensing authority will be responsible for enforcing a new law which has been introduced to protect the welfare of puppies and kittens under six months old. Lucy’s Law is a new law which requires animals to be born and reared in a safe environment, with their mother, and be sold from their place of birth. The new rules are scheduled to come into force on 6 April 2020. Going forward, puppies will only be available for sale from rescue centres or ethical breeders. Commenting on the new law, Horsham District Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Matters and Wellbeing, Cllr Tricia

Youtan, said: “It is excellent news that this law has finally been introduced and I am pleased that as a council we will be able to play our part in the enforcement of the law. “It will do much to protect puppies and kittens and ensure their welfare, so that they arrive in their new homes healthy and micro-chipped, after spending their early weeks in an appropriate environment. “The welfare of animals is a key priority for us as a council and rest assured, our Environmental Health team, who have a successful track record in licensing enforcement, will use every legal power they now have to ensure breeders and outlets are correctly

licensed or they could face prosecution.” Horsham District Council’s Environmental Health team licence dog breeders and pet shops under The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018. Until now, third party sales of puppies and kittens under six months have been allowed via pet shops. As of April 2020, this will no longer be allowed, so people will have to go directly to a breeder or rehoming centre to buy a puppy or kitten. If any breeders or rescue outlets have any queries about licensing their services, please contact fiona.hiron@horsham.gov.uk or call 01402 215427.

The Entertainer dedicates Saturdays to play in for Children’s Mental Health Week

The Entertainer, the fastestgrowing, family owned high street toy retailer in the UK, is partnering with YoungMinds throughout February in support of Children’s Mental Health Week (Sunday 2 – Sunday 9 February 2020). The company is making every Saturday a Day of Play, championing the importance of play in children for a happy, healthy

mind and emotional wellbeing. Horsham is one of 172 stores nationwide that will become a hive of fun and play, with toys out of the packaging and ready to pick up and play. The team will also be on-hand to demonstrate the range of toys and encourage children to play with them together. NHS research conducted in 2017 found one in eight* chil-

dren have a diagnosable mental health disorder – that’s roughly 3 children in every classroom – and there has been a sharp rise in conditions like anxiety and depression in recent years. There are currently gaps in early support for young people with mental health problems, according to the charity. In a survey of over 7,000 young people under 25 who have looked for mental health support**, twothirds of respondents said that they had been unable to find mental health support when they first needed it, and threequarters had had to manage their mental health on their own when they couldn’t find help elsewhere. In support of children’s charity YoungMinds and the great work they do, this Saturday (8 February) 10% of the profits from the sales of The Entertainer’s Ready Steady Dough products will be donated to YoungMinds. The day will also be filled with hands-on fun with the in-store Big Create where children will be able play with the Ready Steady Dough prod-

ucts and crafts. Gary Grant, Founder and Executive Chairman at The Entertainer, explained: “Modern childhood is filled with more pressures from an early age than ever before – from cyber bullying and peer pressure to school tests and performance expectations – being a child today isn’t always fun and games. Yet fun and games is a release that children need to help them live a healthy and happy life and that’s why Saturdays are being dedicated as a day of play throughout our stores and we’re hoping families will enjoy the opportunity to play together more. It’s also why we’re supporting YoungMinds and raising funds through the sale of our popular Ready Steady Dough range as mental health services for children need more support. We look forward to welcoming families into store to play together whilst supporting a great cause.” Nick Harrop, Head of Media and Influencing at YoungMinds, said: “We are extremely grateful to The Entertainer for their sup-

port of YoungMinds and their generosity will help us continue our vital work fighting for the mental health of children and young people across the country. The Entertainer’s Big Create is the ideal way to bring people together to increase awareness of children’s mental health issues.” *Research taken from the NHS the Mental Health of Children and Young People In England https://digital.nhs.uk/dataand-information/publications/ statistical/mental-health-ofchildren-and-young-peoplein-england/2017/2017 **YoungMinds surveyed young people aged under 25 who had looked for support for their mental health in the UK. The survey was conducted from 16 – 23 August 2019 and was completed by 7,083 young people all of whom had looked for mental health support in the UK. The survey was promoted on social media. A Horsham based theatre school picked up a prestigious Award on behalf of its students at a ceremony on-board a luxury Thames Charter on 20 January. The national event saw theatre schools from across the UK come together to celebrate being part of a Dragons’ Den backed franchise, which has been in business for a successful 20 years. Razzamataz Horsham beat off stiff competition to be crowned winners in the category: Best New Franchisee 2019. The Award reflects an outstanding start for the theatre school and its students with Principal Caroline Kavanagh delighted to accept on behalf of the team. Caroline, Principal of Razzamataz Horsham, said: “I’m so delighted that the hard work of our teachers and students have been recognised and it means so much for our team. The Best New Franchisee award really celebrates what we are about as a school and the commitment everyone makes each week.” The Awards were judged by the Head Office team and take in every facet of business, including feedback from parents and students. The judges were impressed with the Horsham school on a number of different elements. The judges said: “Caroline has followed the Razzamataz system with incredible success, with a fantastic launch to the business with 50% full school capacity at just 8 weeks of trading. Caroline has overcome challenges with ease and confidence and is a great leader to her team” The Awards were part of the twenty-year birthday celebrations for Razzamataz. The day event was held in the beautiful Atmosphere Venues in Millbank, London and the evening dinner and Awards were held on a luxurious Thames Charter that took in the most iconic sights of the Capital including the London Eye and the 02. “This Award topped off an incredibly special night and it was lovely to share the twentyyear birthday celebration with Principals from all over the UK,” adds Caroline. “The best feeling

was being able to take this back to our school and see the joy on our students’ faces. We have such talented Principals in our network that for our school to be singled out was something very special.” The team are certainly not slowing down in 2020, with numerous exciting events planned, including performing at Disneyland Paris later this year. “We were delighted to recognise Caroline and her team,” said Denise Hutton-Gosney, MD and Founder of Razzamataz, “Caroline has been one of our most committed, talented and hard-working franchisees, with a strong contribution to our network, which ultimately gives more children and young people the opportunity to participate in the performing arts.” Razzamataz offers a wide range of performing arts styles for youngsters age 4-18. Classes consist of dance, drama and singing and the curriculum covers the whole of the performing arts, from classic West End musical theatre to street dance, pop singing and acting for camera. Lindsay, a member of London Brass, the successor to the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, in which he also played, explains that the programme is “a nod to Philip”. The concert opens with six Renaissance dances by Flemish composer Tylman Susato, visits the Baroque period with music from English composers William Byrd and Henry Purcell, whose Trumpet Tune and Air is a wedding staple, before fast forwarding to the 20th century when the English composer and arranger Chris Hazell wrote his jazzy, light-hearted Brass Cats suite loosely based on the cats who shared his home at the time. The concert ends with five movements of the entertaining Divertimento, by American composer Ray Premru, who was also Principal Bass Trombone at the Philharmonia Orchestra for 30 years. World-class BPO Principal Trombone player Lindsay Shilling, also Principal Trombone at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, says: “I find nothing more thrilling than the sound of a brass ensemble in full voice, and the programme of brass ensemble music we are going to play could not be more diverse. With a time span of over 300 years the audience will be treated to the sounds and majesty of St Mark’s Cathedral, Venice and early English processional music, through to the jazz influenced music of Chris

The Awards Night promises to be a great event for everyone attending, audience and nominated filmmakers alike. Alongside screenings of each of the winning films in their respective categories, we have a special performance from HAODS – the Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society – plus an interval performance in the bar from local acoustic singer/songwriter Taygan Paxtan. Plus, there’s a

special guest coming to join in the festivities in the shape of Nicola Hume – a name recognisable to many local to the area and a firm favourite from The Capitol’s recent pantomimes. The event is being organised by local video production company Silvertip Films, producers of corporate video, live event coverage and promotional video content for many businesses within the West Sussex area and further afield.

Sponsors of the event have either contributed physical prizes for the award winners or contributions which are helping to make the night that little bit extra special. Prizes for the filmmakers are coming from global brands like Manfrotto, Dorling Kindersley and Michael Weise Publications, plus local companies including Freeman Brothers Funeral Directors, Chesworths Estate Agents, Smith and Western, Horsham Bedding Centre, Cocoa Loco, Mac Man, South Lodge Hotel and Spa, Firebird Brewery. The Festival also has media partners through The District Post and the UK Film Review website. The Festival is also raising money – via a percentage of each ticket sold – to local children’s Charity Springboard, who will also be at the event on the night. So, if you are a fan of film and want to see some of the best work for local and national rising talent or if you are a filmmaker yourself and want to see what others are making and do some networking, or if you just fancy a night out which is a little different to the usual, then come along to the Horsham Film Festival 2020 Awards Night! 5 Soldiers: The Body Is The Frontline Following successful tours in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019, including award nominations and critical acclaim, 5 SOLDIERS will continue its partnership with The British Army with just two UK theatre dates before three weeks of touring in the United States. The Capitol, Horsham is delighted to have secured one of those dates on Friday 14 February 2020. 5 SOLDIERS: The Body is the Frontline, is a piece of fulllength dance theatre work with five dancers, four male and one female. The piece was made following a period of field research in November 2008 when Rosie Kay joined The 4th Battalion The Rifles and was allowed to participate in full battle exercises on Dartmoor and Salisbury Plain. She then visited the military reha-

bilitation center, Headley Court, to see the effects of conflict and training on the soldiers’ bodies. Rosie Kay (BA Hons) FRSA, MCR St Cross College, Oxford, born in Scotland, danced from a very early age, then trained at London Contemporary Dance School, graduating in 1998, before a career as a dancer in Poland, France, Germany and the USA. Kay returned to the UK in 2003 and set up Rosie Kay Dance Company in Birmingham in 2004. She is Artistic Director and Choreographer for the show. Rosie Kay, said: “It’s a dance theatre show that you HAVE to see - it will change the way you think about war forever... a moving and dramatic piece, based on military field research, exploring how the human body remains essential to war, even in the 21st century”.

By focusing on the embodied experience of the soldier rather than the moral values of war, and engaging the visceral experience of the audience through the performance, 5 SOLDIERS reframes war inside the context of the soldiers’ body. The enactment of the soldiers’ training, the psychological consequences of that training and the impact of injury invite the audience to identify, and thus respond to the issue of what soldiers are trained and asked to do in the name of civilian elected governments. Although not overtly political, the work invites audiences to see war through the soldier’s body, thereby influencing their percep-

tions of war. In an era of great disillusionment with the political establishment, choreography can have a significant potential to affect audiences through embodied empathic engagement that cannot be produced by verbal means. At its heart, 5 SOLDIERS is an hour-long professional show that engages and thrills audiences. 5 SOLDIERS has earned five star reviews, a nomination for Best Modern Choreography in the National Dance Awards and topped the Best Dance charts in The Observer, The Guardian and The Independent. Peter Knott, Arts Director for Arts Council England, said: “5 SOLDIERS is a fascinating piece,

exploring the hidden reality of life as a soldier and showing audiences a different side to those willing to sacrifice so much of themselves for their jobs. It’s a great example of how dance can be used to tell stories and bring different communities together with a shared sense of understanding and we’re proud to support Rosie Kay’s 10th anniversary 2020 tour as it reaches new and diverse audiences, all over the world.” (Recommended age 12+) Performance: Friday 14 February, The Capitol Theatre, Horsham. In 1961, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley wrote a popular musical called ‘Stop the world – I want to get off’. The title had been inspired by the spray paint work of a graffiti artist. It said something many felt at the time. No doubt, today, many feel the same. The urge to pull the blankets over our heads and hope problems will go away is very strong. Not likely. The news tells us things we prefer not to hear. Currently the coronavirus is dominating the headlines. Despite great efforts to contain the disease, it is travelling around the world. A reminder of the global interconnectedness we live with. The spread of the virus is just an example of its consequences. The chief of which is climate change. We are all involved, both as contributors and current or potential victims. Just as each drop of rain adds to the flood, so each of us adds to

Miraculous save denies Horsham deserved draw Saturday February 1 – Investec Women’s League – Conference East Horsham 1-2 Wimbledon 2 Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s first league game after the prolonged Christmas and New Year break – against leaders Canterbury – was bound to be a tough encounter, and so it proved, yet, only a miracle save right at the death denied Horsham a deserved draw. A field goal early in the first quarter gave the visitors the lead, and Wimbledon were sharp on the break, but Horsham kept the deficit to 0-1 at the interval. On the resumption, Horsham pressure led to Tiff Male levelling the score from close range, until – despite Horsham’s control - in the fourth quarter, with a defender floored and keeper Hannah Jackson away from the goal, Wimbledon walked the ball home to retake the lead. A thrusting Wimbledon attack was then averted by resolute Horsham defence before Horsham’s Elle Blakesley

embarked on a highly promising home run, only to be prevented at the final hurdle. Horsham debutant Charlie Walder was then sidelined by mercifully only temporary injury, just ahead of a Wimbledon short corner strike being denied by an excellent save. Then, at the very death, Horsham were awarded a much disputed penalty, Rosie Firth launching a goal bound strike from the spot, only to be thwarted when the visiting keeper thrust out her stick to pull off a remarkable full stretch save. Horsham Team Manager Jane Denman told the District Post: “Even though Wimbledon are top of the league, we looked the better team in the second half. It was disappointing not to draw and I know Rosie is devastated to have missed the penalty, but she shouldn’t be - we were denied a share of the points by a truly amazing last ditch save.” On Saturday the Ladies return to Christ’s Hospital for a 2pm pushback against Canterbury 2s, two berths below sixth-placed Horsham, but who shaded Horsham by the single goal of the match in the early season away fixture.

Horsham easily beaten by Thurrock

Saturday February 1 – London 2 South East Horsham 17-46 Thurrock Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham’s six match winning run came to an abrupt end last Saturday, a disappointing defensive performance culminating in a heavy home defeat against Thurrock. There was to be no repeat of the heroics when the Green and Whites came away from their trip to Essex in October with a dramatic last minute win. Instead, after a bright start Horsham turned out their flattest and most porous defensive performance of the season to date conceding eight tries in the process against a strong Thurrock side belying their lowly league position, who in turn showed the Green and Whites a watertight defence to shut Horsham out for the middle sixty minutes of the game. Horsham flew out of the blocks to cross the line in the 2nd minute after a great set of play and multiple phases

saw 18 year old Oli Chennell use his strength to score his first try for the 1st XV out wide. But, this was to be the last time Horsham troubled the scoreboard until the 65th minute as Thurrock scored eight tries without reply with a hat-trick from winger Dan Stone, as well as scores from Kye Holloway, Joss Nunn, Dan Ulph, Dan Carey and Tani Loka. There were also two conversions from Dylan Fearon and one from Henry Bird. With the game entering the final stages Horsham finished strongly with a couple of consolation tries from Declan Nwachukwu, the first of which came after a nice delay by Jake Fisher to put Ian Paku into space, and the second after a good interchange of passes with Ciaran Preston. Horsham head coach Nick Stocker said: “A thoroughly disappointing performance from the lads today, who came up against a committed Thurrock team displaying a hunger for the ball throughout. Our indiscipline in the first half allowed Thurrock to gain field position and with a steady source of possession at set piece they found space against our ineffective

tackling, opening up an unassailable lead. Matters weren’t helped by three particularly dubious try decisions by the official in a ten-minute spell immediately after half time. Whilst this in no way detracts from Thurrock’s performance, or indeed excuses our own, it does alter the complexion in the mind of the players who are working hard to chase the game. On the bright side, the Thurrock management and players were magnanimous in victory, contributing fully to an enjoyable post-match beer in the clubhouse, where they nominated Ian Paku as our Man of the Match. For a young lad playing colts’ rugby last season and recently getting his first team debut, it marks a real step in the development of this young open side. The week’s break will be much needed to fine tune some of the deficiencies exposed by Thurrock, with the next fixture on the 15th February - a tough away game at Camberley for both 1st team and Lions. Before that, the Lions play Hove away in the Bob Rogers cup looking to defend the title we hold.”

Catastrophic decision penalises Horsham Saturday February 1 Premier Division 2 East – Horsham Men 1-3 Old Georgians Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter In the corresponding away fixture, current runner up Old Georgians overwhelmed Horsham, but this time it was a far closer encounter and, but for a regrettable piece of umpiring, Horsham might well have shared the points. Horsham applied pressure from the start, earning two early short corners, but they went

behind when OGs manufactured a goal from nothing, a cross being banged in from close range in the tenth minute. But, parity was quickly restored after a chase up field enabled Zak Chinn to supply Joey Humphreys, who composed himself before rocketing the ball into the top right corner, for what seasoned supporters claimed to be the goal of the season. Then, a long ball found Humphreys again, only for the danger to be averted. Action switched to the other end, and Freddie Campbell cleared a threatening OG foray. A controversial OG short corner followed

just before the half hour mark, a cruel deflection giving Horsham keeper Richard Hancock no chance. Short corners were awarded at either end of the field, Horsham’s excellent strike being parried away. A ruinous decision followed when first one and then another OG player confronted Hancock with physical contact, clearly forfeiting the assailants’ right to remain on the pitch and they were both duly sin binned. But, bewilderingly, the umpire by the far goal, a long, long way from the incident, ran the whole length of the field for a prolonged discussion – not the

first of the game – with his colleague, and after a considerable delay Hancock was sent off for retaliation, which had escaped the notice of observers near the scene of the crime. Now goalkeeper-less, Horsham shot just wide before being awarded their fourth short corner, the score remaining 1-2 at the imminent break. Right at the start of the second half, the visitors went further ahead from a short corner, Horsham having 5 defenders on the line, but no keeper. As soon as the corner was completed, Hancock was allowed to return,

but the damage had been done. As the game progressed, Horsham proved to be the better side, with a series of shorts – the majority - and had OGs worried into playing panic hockey, and although Horsham were unable to get the ball in the net again, it was impossible to avoid the feeling that the result had been decided by the umpires, rather than the players. For OGs, the league’s leading scorer Jack Rednap, scored twice, increasing his seasonal tally to 16. On Saturday Horsham travel to 5th-placed Lewes in need of some wins to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Horsham suffer fifth Horsham YMCA consecutive away defeat game postponed

Saturday February 1 – The BetVictor Isthmian League Premier Division Cray Wanderers 2-1 Horsham Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter After drawing at home to Cray Wanderers early in the season Horsham hoped to go one better last Saturday, but their below par away form and previous reverses against Kent sides – having lost to Folkestone (twice), Dartford and Margate – mitigated against such thoughts, despite Cray being

reduced to 10 men for almost the entire game, and Horsham missing a late penalty. A referee under assessment often proves to be a recipe for excessive sanctions and Cray’s Ben Mundele appeared unfortunate to receive a yellow card with the game barely under way, and Horsham Captain Jack Brivio promptly suffered the same fate, for too robust a challenge. Meanwhile, the Hornets’ Rob O’Toole unleashed a cannonball, but Cray keeper Lewis Carey pushed it away. With less than a quarter of an hour on the clock, Mundele was then sent off

as a result of his over-enthusiastic tackle against Greg Cundle. Horsham sought to capitalise, but Cray recovered from the spillage of Lea Dawson’s cross, before Cundle’s strike came to nothing. Cray, though, thought they had taken the lead just before the mid point of the half, only to be denied by offside. However, they did go in front, through the prolific Joe Taylor, from the penalty spot after a Cray header had inadvertently found the arm of Dylan Merchant. Worse followed for the Hornets when Cray promptly went further ahead, courtesy of an outstanding left foot corkscrew strike from Rhys MurrelWilliamson. But, in an exciting session of play, Horsham soon pulled back a goal when O’Toole’s header was wide of the mark, but the ball remained live and found its way to Lee Harding, who outwitted Carey, Cray remaining 2-1 up at the break. Play resumed with Horsham pressing for parity, an early corner coming to nothing thanks to the woodwork. Harding was then off target before Dawson fired straight at Carey. Cray were defending tigerishly, keeping the Hornets at bay, despite Chris Smith and Harding combining to challenge. Tauren Roberts then tested Carey, but the keeper managed to push the ball over. A barrage of Horsham corners evaporated with Cray repelling several promising opportunities. But, with eight minutes of normal time remaining, Horsham were given a lifeline for a deserved share of the points – somewhat fortuitously from the penalty spot, only for Harry Mills’ effort to be diverted off the post. And, Carey was in action again, to deny Alex Kelly, Horsham striving for parity in injury time, but again without success away from home. In need of a win or two to reboot their play off aspirations, after Wednesday’s visit to Kingstonian, Horsham return home to the Camping World Stadium onSaturday to welcome Haringey Borough, who, earlier in the season, bundledHorsham out of the FA Trophy 3-0 at their Coles Park Stadium, to where Horsham promptly returned to beat the north London side in the league.

Saturday February 1 Southern Combination Football League – Premier Division Hassocks v Horsham YMCA – match postponed Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Horsham YMCA were thwart-

ed when a late pitch inspection ruled the ground unfit at The Beacon last Saturday, where they were due to play Hassocks This Saturday YM return home for a tough encounter against 5th in the table Eastbourne Town, to whom they lost 5-0 in the league in September and 4-2 in the FA Vase a fortnight later

Broadbridge Heath appoint interim management team Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Following last month’s resignation of long term Manager Steve Painter, Broadbridge Heath Football Club Committee has been considering how best to fill the vacancy, and Secretary Andy Crisp has advised the District Post: “Having left a good impression over the past few weeks we have decided to continue with our Interim Management Team of Chris Simmons

and Kristian Sorensen until the end of the season.” Chris Simmons has previously managed Heath’s Under 23 side (a role now assumed by Graham Shergold), Andy Crisp adding: “This last few weeks we’ve witnessed a significant shift in attitude, commitment, and atmosphere on the playing side and therefore believe it makes a lot of sense, from a continuity perspective, to fully support Chris and Kristian for the remainder of the season”.

Heath penalise Saltdean with two set piece gems Football - Southern Combination Football League Premier Division Saturday February 1 - Broadbridge Heath 2-0 Saltdean United Football Martin Read - Sports Reporter Prior to the 1-1 away draw last August, since their return to the top division, Saltdean United had the better of Broadbridge Heath, seven times the teams had played each other and Heath had suffered seven defeats, but last Saturday – in front of a good crowd, despite the icy wind – Heath finally laid the bogey, courtesy of two second half penalties.

An early Heath corner was negated before Saltdean keeper, Josh Heyburn had to rush out to clear an attack, then, mid way through the first half Sam Jobbins hobbled off, his shin pad broken and with tram line stud gouges down his leg. Alfie Jones was controversially sin binned, but his best was yet to come. As the game progressed Saltdean figured more prominently, Conor Evento having to hasten from the Heath goal to punch clear a free kick ahead of the lively James Walters heading just wide. A Heath set piece then fizzled out, followed by a long hold up to install a replacement official when a linesman had to leave the field with a hamstring injury. Dan Perry then unleashed

a shot cum cross, routinely caught by Evento, Heath retaliating with Louis Blake supplying Jake Hull, but to no avail. Heath sub Archie Goddard then dashed through, but was just beaten to the ball in front of goal, the half ending goal-less after Saltdean’s Harry Shoeman was marginally off target. The second half began with two solo runs – Harrison Parker for Saltdean and Renato Carvalho for Heath, neither reaping a dividend. But, Heath soon went ahead after the onrushing Heyburn crashed into Hull, bringing him down in the box, Jones stepping up with a well taken penalty. Jamie Taylor burst through, but his cross just evaded the goal, his subsequent cracking shot was pushed off for

a corner, Heath being awarded another penalty in the resultant melee. Reprieved from his earlier sin binning, Alfie Jones again converted well from the spot. Twenty minutes remained and a Jack Hartley strike was well saved by Evento. Goddard then pressed, finding the side netting before Heyburn spilled his second attempt, but quickly recovered, before Goddard tested Heyburn again. Meanwhile, Saltdean were pushing to get something from the game, Hartley’s snap shot hitting the post, before a late volley and free kick were far too aerial, Heath closing down the game to win without too much further difficulty. On Saturday Heath, now 12th

in the table, travel to The Oval, Channel View Road to take on Eastbourne United, currently 6th
