Horsham district students ahead of nationals

Students in Horsham district seem to have bucked the trend in GCSE results this year as they head for the start of A level studies this month.

Nationally GCSE success rates are reported to show a decline.

But local head teachers report delight at 2016 results (see reports

inside) and county education bosses said students had performed better than the national average.

West Sussex County Council has congratulated students in schools across the county, including Horsham district.

It said: “Based on the provisional results received from schools it seems likely that the overall performance for the county has improved from last year.

have shown a decline. However, West Sussex appears to have bucked this trend.

Results shared by most of West Sussex schools, as measured by the 5A*-C including English and maths, have improved from last year’s result of 60 per cent to around 61.5 per cent this year – a 1.5 per cent rise.

Although the figures need to be validated later this year, once again the rise is likely to place West Sussex above the national average.”

Christine Field, Acting Cabinet Member for Education and Skills congratulated all West Sussex students studying in Local Authority maintained schools, academies and colleges on their achievements.

She said: “I am delighted that students in West Sussex have managed to buck the national trend and have achieved so well.

Our increased performance this year is a tribute to our dedicated students and their teachers, school leaders and, most impor-

tantly, the parents and carers that have supported their youngsters in progressing to the next stage of their education.”

Typical of positive local reactions was Nick Wergar, head of Steyning Grammar, who said: “In a changing educational world these are an excellent set of results”.

Next year changes in the way results are classed begin, with Maths and English given numbered marks instead of the current alphabetic ones.

Linda’s day as golfers help her hospice A well-loved woman from Horsham will be remembered as golfers will take to the course to help a hospice raise funds.

The New Horizons Appeal Charity Golf Challenge at Rusper Golf Club on September 8 is inviting keen golfers to get into teams of four and take part. The event will raise money for Crawley-based St Catherines Hospice.

Teams will be playing for Linda’s Trophy, named after Linda Catlow, who was cared for by St Catherine’s. For the last six years, her family have run golf events in her memory and raised more than £35,000 for the hospice.

She was last seen by family on Tuesday afternoon of last week and was reported to have been in the Lynd Cross pub in Horsham around 6pm on the Wednesday of last week.. She was reported missing when relatives were unable to make contact with her by Thursday

Donald’s story of love and gratitude Restaurant boss offers help to fire disaster family Teresa Collins, Donald and Marian

Restaurant workers are running two fund-raising nights to help a family of six made homeless by a blaze.

The gesture by the popular Blue India restaurant is part of a community effort to help the family, which is now living in emergency accommodation in Horsham.

This week The Post, with permission from Donald’s widow Marian, publishes his tribute in full in his memory.

In it Donald spoke of how St Catherine’s Hospice at Crawley had helped support him to continue to do the things that matter most. And he revealed how his biggest wish was to give treats to his beloved wife Marian, despite his own difficulties.

Donald said: “I’m Donald McCloud Manson. It makes Marian, my wife, laugh when I give my full name like that. I’ve beaten cancer three times; it’s come back in my throat now but I can still breathe and talk. The doctors have told me that this one won’t respond to treatment so St Catherine’s Hospice are helping me.

Nigel and Tiz from St Catherine’s come to visit us at different times. Nigel is one of the Palliative Care Nurses at St Catherine’s; he sorts out my medication. He’s not the only one treating me but straight off you can tell he’s an expert. He knows just what to do and the doctors respect him. We trust him completely, Marian and me. He helps make sure I’m not in too much pain or feeling sick, which is a good thing because I’ve got lots to do, I can’t waste time.

Tiz is part of the St Catherine’s Therapies team and started coming to the house when I said I needhelp walking. I like to get out, like to walk in the fresh air but I lose my breath and my balance is no good. I had one crutch but that didn’t work, if I put it on one side I’d just fall over the other way. Wechatted and Tiz suggested one of those walkers.

Now that is great, I can lean on that, my balance isn’t so much of a problem anymore and it folds up out of the way when I need to get on the bus.The most important reason for me to keep moving is Marian. I might be a difficult patient but my wife is a special woman so I’ve got to spoil her, even if it’s just making sure she always comes down to a cup of tea in the morning. With my walker I was able to go into town and get a great big bouquet of flowers, then leave it out for her to find on our anniversary.

She didn’t expect it at all,you should have seen her smile.

Thanks to Tiz and Nigel I can also keep going down to the pub at the weekend, I have one with the boys and get a lift home with my mate, Big Brian. I don’t drink so muchanymore but keeping those connections is important.Nigel and Tiz have helped me keep being myself, but I’ve known for a long time that St Catherine’s is a really special place. Years ago I visited friends that were staying at the hospice. We could have a drink and sing around the piano.

I want to go there when the time comes. To the hospice, with the piano and the whiskey.

If there’s one thing I could say to anyone reading this; I just want to thank St Catherine’s, they have done everything for us. We were so down, they’ve picked us up, made us happy. They are marvellous people, so kind. We can trust them completely, it’s done wonderful things for us, I can’t say it enough.”

The staff at Blue India in Billingshurst will raise money for the family on September 5 and 6 when they will offer, from 6-11pm, a set menu for £20, with £10 from each meal going to the family.

Blue India restaurant manager Belal Ahmed told the Post: “I know the family. They come in here. They lost a lot of things in the fire, washing machine, fridge, everything.

“I am hoping for a minimum of 100 people but I am thinking of a maximum of about 300, so we can raise much more for the family. If a 100 people are eating we get £1,000 for the family, but if we can get 300 then we can raise £3,000 for them.”

The only things rescued from the blaze, which killed a pet cat and hamster, were two photographs that were reminders of Claire’s second born son Joshua, who died 14 years ago at birth. Clare said: “After he died I thought nothing could be as bad. But everything has kind of stopped for us now.”

Wife says death crash husband was incredible Paul Nash- “incredible”

The man who died in a crash at Henfield has been described as an incredible individual by his grieving wife.

Paul Nash, 47, leaves behind wife Kim, 40, sons Danny, 25, and Bailey, 19, parents Rose and Alun, and siblings Coral and Andrew.

At about 2.10pm on August 21 the black Triumph motorcycle

Paul was riding collided with a white Nissan Qashqai on the A2037 Shoreham Road, in Henfield. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Paul met his wife 16 years ago, and the couple married on the Greek island of Rhodes, in the company of close friends and family, in 2009.

Kim Nash said: “That was one of the best days of our lives, and one that I’ll always cherish. Paul was a terrific father to his two boys and a wonderful husband.

“Paul worked for Diageo, a consumer goods company, from 2000, where he met some fantastic people and was a great inspiration to many with the love, energy and enthusiasm he had for his work.

“He was an incredible individual who was a friend to so many people, and he touched so many lives in so many different ways.

“He was fun-loving, full of life and just great to be around. He always put others first and he will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him.”

Paul, from Rustington, grew up in the Northamptonshire villages of Yardley Gobion and Greens Norton, and attended both Sponne School and the former Kingsbrook School, in Towcester.

He joined the Navy in 1985 at the age of 17, and after several years of service left to have his two sons Danny and Bailey.

He then moved to Brighton where he jointly managed The Cricketers in Black Lion Street – one of the oldest pubs in the city – with his brother Andy.

2017 date for better urgent care centre An urgent care centre near Horsham should finish its building project early next year.

Work is under on the Urgent Care Centre, formerly known as the Urgent Treatment Centre, at Crawley Hospital, which will see the creation of a bigger, improved unit for nonemergency admissions, a dedicated Paediatrics area and an enlarged Clinical Assessment Unit.

The Urgent Care Centre is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to treat most injuries or illnesses that are not life threatening, including sprains and strains, broken bones, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries. It will remain fully operational even during the improvement works, which are scheduled to be completed early in 2017.

The multi-million pound project is a major initiative by NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group and NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group. It will be built by Morgan Sindall, under operational direction from Community Solutions Partnership Services Limited.

The new, improved Clinical Assessment Unit, which is scheduled to open this Autumn,

will boast more beds, greatly increasing capacity and scope of services provided by Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.Managers hope a new treatment area for children and a larger reception area will ensure the best possible experience for patients across the Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex locale.

Commenting on behalf of NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group, Clinical Chief Officer, Dr Amit Bhargava said: “The planned improvements will help save hundreds of patients each year from travelling to hospitals further afield.

“Public feedback has been clear, that you want to see more services provided in Crawley and this expansion project is part of our commitment to have services closer to the communities they serve.”

In addition to the Urgent Care Centre development is the construction of a 26-bed sub-acute ward on the sixth floor for patients no longer in need of care services of an acute hospital such as East Surrey Hospital. The ward will include an art therapy unit, gymnasium and assisted kitchen facilities to help prepare patients for the transition back home.

Better than best at Steyning GCSE exams

Many Steyning Grammar School pupils did better than expected in their GCSE examinations despite what the school described as massive changes.

The school said in its annual GCSE report : “We would like to congratulate all of our students, many of whom have out-performed expectations and displayed their academic skills, as well as the achievement characteristics of self-control, growth mindset and grit. In an educationally turbulent year, with massive national change, increased rigour and uncertain grade boundaries, our students have shown their resilience and commitment to learning.The impact of our focus

on Learning Characteristics is clearly showing results and will be key to maintaining this excellent progress profile.

“Charlotte Veale led our cohort with a clean sweep of A* GCSE grades across the board. Every student in Year 11 left with at least one qualification. Our Progress 8 and value added data highlights that students at SGS make significantly more progress from their starting points compared to similar students nationally.

“We are proud of all our students at Steyning Grammar School – our inclusive curriculum has enabled them all to ‘be the best they can be’ regardless of their starting point and personal

circumstances. This, combined with the support and guidance offered by our outstanding staff, has resulted in another great year of results.

“Across our broad and excellent curriculum offer of over 30 subjects, particularly impressive results include: 98% of biology students achieved an A* - C grade; 98% of chemistry students achieved an A* - C grade; 96% of physics students achieved an A* - C grade; 91% of drama students achieved an A* – C; 96% of music students achieved an A* – C; 84 per cent of French language students achieved an A* – C and 77% of maths students achieved an A* - C grade.

Head teacher Nick Wergan said: “Congratulations to our students for their hard work and grit – they

deserved to be successful and I am delighted we increased results in a year where grade boundaries seem to have again got more difficult.

“In a changing educational world these are an excellent set of results, and I am hugely grateful to staff and to those at home for their dedicated support. We are moving now into a system that values the progress every student makes from their own starting points, rather than whether they get a particular benchmark grade, and our early estimation of the progress all our GCSE students made is exceptional. Every group of students, whatever educational challenges they faced, made superb progress compared to similar students nationally.”

An array of A grades for Christ’s Hospital

Christ’s Hospital’s IGCSE pupils matched closely the very strong pattern established in recent years, with excellent pass rates, further distinguished by a high proportion of top grades, says the school.

This year 32.3% of all grades awarded were A*, 64.1% were A*

or A , 85.6% were A*, A or B and 96.6% were A* - C. The pupils sit the International General Certificate of Education, first introduced about 25 years ago.

Individual highlights included: • 9 pupils gained 10 A*s or more, with Katrina Millett (London) and Megan Whitney (Surrey) achieving 12 A*s; • Owen Purnell (Horsham), Jayde Rose (Worthing) and Nana Sarfo-Bonsu (Crawley) achieved 11 A*s; • Paula Gross (Munich), Finlay Osman-Sellwood (Henfield), Frederick Underwood (Horsham) and Fabian Webb (Bury) gained at least 10 A* grades; • In total, 31 pupils gained 10

A*/A grades or better, with Owen Purnell achieving an impressive 13 grades at A* or A. Other highlights include: • 93.3% of Further Mathematics pupils gained A*s or As; • 10 pupils scored the Double A* grade in Further Mathematics, thus achieving 3 A*s for their Mathematics overall at IGCSE; • 86.1% of the Single Mathematics grades and 92.6% of all Mathematics grades combined were A*s or As; • 82.4% of the pupils taking Latin achieved A*s or A grades; • All 14 of the Mandarin pupils gained A*s; • The sciences have all done well at IGCSE, with the Biology, Chemistry and Physics Departments respectively achieving 93.2%, 92.1% and 95.3% of their grades at A*-B; • 91.2% of all History pupils gained A*-B grades.

Head Master John Franklin said: “Our pupils and their teachers have worked very hard to ensure this excellent set of GCSE results.

This set of results will stand our pupils in good stead for the next two years in the sixth form for their A Level or International Baccalaureate (IB) studies.”

Special praise for determined GCSE students Pupils at The Towers Convent School who overcame personal obstacles received special praise for their GCSE results.

The Upper Beeding-based school said its results were always outstanding and this year had been no exception with pupils attaining approximately 50% A* and A grades overall and in several subject areas. The following pupils were particularly thrilled with their results; Francesca Collier achieved 7 A*s and 4 A grades, Helena Overton-Smith achieved 6 A*s and 4As and Jodie Reed achieved 5A*s and 5 As. The school said : “Many of the pupils overcame illness and significant setbacks to achieve great success. Their hard work and commitment and the unfailing support of their dedicated teachers make a winning combi-

nation.”

In its report the school said many pupils arrived last Thursday with parents in tow, some of whom were strictly instructed to remain in the car. Some pupils clutched their envelopes tightly, busily seeking a quiet corner of the school in which to dare to peek. Some were too nervous to read the results themselves and relied on a supportive teacher to relay the good news.

Headmistress Clare Trelfa said: ““I am absolutely delighted for the girls, who have once again excelled themselves.

We are incredibly proud of them.

Their diligence and focus have most certainly paid off. I extend my warmest congratulations to all of them and wish them happiness and success with their sixth form studies.”

Neighbourhood Plan for Horsham Town: a Survey of Residents and Businesses Horsham Blueprint Frances Haigh - Chair Horsham Blueprint Neighbourhood Forum is pleased to announce the publication of its Interim Report. Drawing on all the contributions received from across the community, the report identifies main themes, wishes and ideas that have been submitted.

This will form the foundation of the draft Neighbourhood Plan which is being prepared this autumn.

Every household and business in the Horsham Town area will be receiving a Newsletter with a summary of the Interim Report. Most importantly, there are details of the Surveys. The forum has asked for as many people as possible to complete the Surveys. These will supply important data, which will contribute to the draft of the Plan. People of all ages and from as many businesses as possible, in all sectors, are being urged to take part in the surveys.

Frances Haigh, Chair, commented: “Above all, Horsham residents, businesses and visitors value Horsham as a Market Town.

The policies in our Neighbourhood Plan will reflect this. As a historic town centre, most of the sites which may be developed are likely to be for regeneration. Any development has to be sensitive to that history and not cause

harm to the attractiveness of the town.

“People value Horsham as a great place to live because of its friendliness, its historic character, its accessibility and its green spaces and planting. Many people value Horsham precisely because it is not a

clone town filled with national chains of shops and restaurants.

Our plan will include policies that support our independent traders, in all sectors, and encourage an environment of creativity and innovation, so that new businesses are formed here. We are especially keen to have a space in the town for coworking¹ and innovation, possibly linked with living accommodation, so that our young people have opportunities

Haigh stated that, as the outskirts of Horsham becomes more built up, there will be greater pressures on the town centre: “It is important to remember the human scale within our town centre: places are for people, not just for profit. We know that we have an ageing population and we would love to see Horsham recognised as an Age-friendly Town. Alongside policies for development that support independence and accessibility, we will support projects to reduce isolation and bring our community together. We also wish to ensure that everyone is able to make the most of our town and that people with disabilities have access to the facilities they need, such as Changing Places toilets in public buildings and suitable play equipment.”

The Neighbourhood Forum state that they recognise the need for more affordable housing, for our young people to rent or buy, and that they are reviewing numerous sites around the Town.

However, they would still like to hear from anyone who is able to nominate a suitable site.

More men need for choir The singing Cades and Wilemans

More men are needed to sing in a popular choir.

Christ’s Hospital Choral Society’s recent summer concert raised the roof with rousing pieces like Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, where the audience was invited to stand up and join in.

Organisers say that although the choir is exciting in its present form, there is space for more singers, in particular more men. Two singing couples explained what the choir brings to them.

Mike Cade said: “Hearing Christ’s Hospital Choral Society simply blew my mind, and I was hooked instantly.

“I miss it when there are no rehearsals.’

Patsy Cade she joined 15 years ago and sings with husband Mike, who said: “We sing a wide range of music, from big well-known works, to smaller pieces and some good-fun work, and all that in a variety of languages.

‘And all that to a very high standard because of the excellent choral training.’

Peter and Joan Wileman lived in Italy and France and moved to Horsham in February. At a workshop by the choir they were bitten by the bug and joined. Joan said: “I was smitten by the quality and the energy of the choir.”

Peter lists a range of benefits that singing brings, saying : “It is easy to make new friends, singing with others is a wonderful experience, it replaces any problems of the day, and it helps your posture, just to name a few. And the cost is a mere £55 per year.”

The only requirement to be in the choir is the ability to sing in tune.

The first rehearsal is on 8 September 8, from 7.30 – 9.30pm, at Christ’s Hospital.

Parking ban after country park proves too popular Drivers have been banned from parking near Southwater Country Park after they caused congestion during a surge in visitors.

The drivers clogged nearby Cripplegate Lane because they had run out of official parking spaces while visiting the park and the popular Dinosaur Island Play Area.

Horsham District Council has arranged for a temporary Traffic Regulation Order authorised

by West Sussex County Council that will allow council officers to enforce on-street parking restrictions along the lane to ease congestion and improve access for local residents.

The council said the action was made necessary after a peak in visitors to the popular Southwater Country Park and the new Dinosaur Island Play Area over the past few weeks during school holidays.

When the Dinosaur Island was created in 2015, the council undertook works to extend the main car park serving the Country Park to cater for increased demand.

However, the car parks that

serve the Country Park have been full because good weather has drawn big crowds. which has required the council to temporarily expand the existing overflow car park in Ben’s Field on August 17, which has created an additional 70 spaces. Despite additional parking being made available, the council said visitors still parked thoughtlessly on residential roads, causing obstructions and access issues.

The district council will be applying to West Sussex County Council for a permanent Traffic Regulation Order, whilst the temporary order is in place, to cover the season from April through to October each year.

The council’s request for the order will be subject to normal consultation. If the order is approved, arrangements will made for the necessary signs and road markings to be provided and final notices will be advertised in a local paper stating when it will come into effect.

Councillor Jonathan Chowen, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said:

“We are of course very pleased that the Southwater Country Park and the Dinosaur Island Play Area is as popular as it is, drawing in visitors from across the district.

We did take measures to increase car parking capacity when improvements had been made to the Country Park last year, but with the great weather it has been a very popular destination over the school summer holidays. However, its popularity cannot be at the expense of the quality of life and safety of local residents, which is why we had to look for some immediate solutions.

“I am confident that the additional parking and enforcement actions that have been put in place will provide immediate relief for local residents. We will of course continue to monitor the situation closely”.

Councillor Claire Vickers, Cabinet Member for Planning and Development, said: “The situation for residents along Cripplegate Lane has been very difficult for the past few weeks and I would like to thank local residents for their patience during this difficult

time.

“We have put in place a number of temporary measures to deal

with the situation urgently whilst we seek a longer and more permanent solution to the problem.”

this time very few children would have had access to schooling, although there were several other establishments in Storrington where children were taught.

A school is shown in Church Street on the 1841 Tithe map so it is possible that the school endowed by Mrs Downer and Mr Hooper was on the site of the present Abbey Lodge.

The school was sold for £180 and, together with gifts and donations from the church authorities and parishioners of Storrington, and grants from government and the National Society, a new school was funded and built in School Lane in 1868.

In 1932 Mr Cecil Waller became Headmaster. Mr Waller was able to make use of an adjacent field for school sports and under his jurisdiction the playground was resurfaced and Mrs Waller was responsible for starting the school canteen in the Village Hall and many of the past pupils remember dashing across the field to get their school dinners.

“There are many references to education within Storrington. We have the street names of School Hill and School Lane, both located in different parts of our village; education, either private, public or church is very much part of our village history. Where today education is a common theme in all our lives, Storrington had been educating its residents since 1763 when Jane Downer’s bestowed her gift of £500 for the teaching of 20 poor girls and boys.

In 1806 another beneficiary, John Hooper, added a further £15 per year to Mrs Downer’s bequest, so that 10 more children would be able to receive an education. At

Horticulture holds up at big village show

Gardeners increased the entries for a village’s annual flower show.

Show entry numbers in the horticultural section for Billingshurst Horticultural Society’s competition were higher despite what organisers described as a difficult growing season.

The show at a Billingshurst Centre that was full of scent and colour attracted 62 exhibitors with 486 entries across 135 classes in horticulture, floral art, cookery, handicrafts, photography and junior sections. A fine specimen dahlia won Helena Stevens the John Kingston Memorial Trophy for best Horticultural exhibit, while husband David was awarded the National Vegetable Society’s plaque for five potatoes of one variety in the open classes. Leaney won four trophies in the floral section, including the Ladies Cup, and shared a fifth, the Simpson Dahlia Cup, with Helena Stevens. Sarah Stevens retained the Miss Puttock Floral Art Cup, closely followed by new exhibitor Gordon Price.

Categories included “Indian Summer” “Wild Woodland” and “The Seaside”.

The Men Only class “Gone Fishing” was won by young Aidan Osgood.

Cookery was well represented in the cake classes but less so in the preserves. Diplomas were awarded to Gillian Yarham and Brenda Twine for sultana scones and blackcurrant jam. The range and quality of the craftwork was reported by show secretary Beryl Barraclough as impressive with

55 entries. Paintings and drawings were particularly fine and Mareen Cranch was awarded a diploma for her excellent painting of a tiger. The popular photography section best entry was a study of a butterfly in the “4 on a Theme” category exhibited by Daphne Drabble, who retained The Photography Cup for most points. Exhibits by children featured charming celebrations of the Queen’s 90th Birthday. The Nursery Class of five years and under displayed new designs for crowns for the Royal Jewellers to consider. Isabelle Skinner, age 14, was awarded two diplomas of merit for her handicrafts in soft and hard medium and again shared the Junior Cup with her 11 year old brother Adam.

Horsham district escapes major change in vote boundaries VOTERS in Horsham District will see several changes in elections for West Sussex County councillors.

But Nuthurst parish is staying in Southwater and Nuthurst division instead of being moved into the new St Leonard’s Forest Division.

All the other changes proposed in draft recommendations last year will go through.

The biggest is Horsham Hurst division gaining more than 600 voters from Horsham Park.

The Horsham Tanbridge and Broadbridge Heath Division will be removed. The new St Leonard’s Forest division will comprise parts of Roffey, Crabtree, Lower Beeding area, and Mannings Heath from Southwater, and Faygate,

Ifield and Rusper from Warnham. Boundaries are being re-drawn, in many cases only slightly, to ensure that the numbers of residents represented by county councillors is more equal.

Brian Watson, from Horsham, holds the county council seat for South water and Nuthurst.Overall, West Sussex Council will have 70 councillors instead of 71, and some divisions across the county will be re-arrranged to ensure councillors represent a fairer number of residents. Each division will be served by a single councillor.

At present Conservatives dominate the council chamber at Chichester, holding 44 of the current 71 seats.A Boundary Commission spokesman said: “We made one change to our draft recommendations in response to local feedback in Horsham District. The parish of Nuthurst will be included in the Southwater and Nuthurst division rather than the St Leonard’s Forest electoral division as previously proposed.”The Boundary Commission final recommendations must go before Parliament for formal approval before they take effect next May.

Horsham club helps Childline service

Footballers from Horsham helped boost the funds of a vital helpline for distressed children.

They helped Sussex County Football Association raise £2,400 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children ChildLine service at the Sussex Community Shield match.

The money was presented to the

children’s charity after the game between Eastbourne Borough FC and Horsham FC. The association is supporting Childline’s “30 for 30” initiative. The aim is to encourage 30 companies across Sussex to raise £2,000 as Childline celebrates its 30th anniversary.

It takes £2,000 to recruit and

train one ChildLine volunteer and fund the first 100 calls they answer.

Francis McAllister, the charity’s Head of Community and Events attended the match, won 3-0 by Eastbourne Borough. He said: “I would like to say a sincere thank you to the Sussex County FA for choosing to support NSPCC and

our Childline service during its 30th anniversary.

“The NSPCC has a long association with the FA going back 20 years. Working together we are helping to keep children in football safe.”

Ken Benham, Chief Executive of the Sussex County FA, added: “We are absolutely delighted to have

raised such a fantastic amount in support the NSPCC’s ChildLine service.

“Our thanks go to the local business that supported the event and to the fans who embraced the fundraising activities pitch-side in support of the NSPCC – it was a great way to kick-off the Sussex football season!”

Shoppers will see the end of an era with a popular duo as Horsham Markets is run by new firm this month.

Popular PJ and Marion, of Aldred Associates, are bowing out after five years of keeping customers happy.

PJ and Marion have not just organised the smooth running of the market, but often been the heart of soul of it. Dressing in the clothes of yesteryear and even being put in the stocks have been part of their enthusiasm for the job.

Featured on this page are some of the moments from PJ and Marion’s five years at the Carfax.

They will still be a familiar part of the town centre scene with their well-established shop and café.

years which has seen the Saturday Local Produce market grow four-fold and the introduction of the Thursday market to the Carfax focussing on Street Food.

“It has also been very challenging running the Mixed Market which has continued to decline as most other towns general markets have. Whilst it was a very difficult decision not to re-tender for the markets, we are looking forward to having more time for our Horsham shop and cafe. We are thrilled Food Rocks will be taking over the operation and we know they will be as committed to the markets and Horsham as we have always been.”

Meanwhile shoppers can rest assured that two of the liveliest characters on the Carfax scene will still be serving them.

Horsham District Council awarded the next contract to run

the Carfax-based markets to Lewes company Food Rocks, and Aldred Associates did not bid for the contract.

The existing contract ends on September 13, has been successfully run by Aldred Associates since 2011. There will be a transition to the new operators after September’s Horsham Big Nibble Food Festival.

Food Rocks is an established food and local produce markets and events company and has been operator of the council’s Little Nibble Children’s Food Festival which has been a feature of the town’s Big Nibble event over the last two years.

The Horsham Markets contract covers the operation and marketing of the Carfax based markets on Thursdays and Saturdays and also specialist Sunday markets and market based events during the year.

Covers aims to raise £25,000 for local hospices Covers Timber & Builders Merchants will be aiming to raise £25,000 to help local hospices.

The company, which has depots in Horsham and Rudgwick, will be supporting hospices across the South East, including St. Catherine’s Hospice in Worthing and Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice in Arundel.

Between Monday 12 and Saturday 17 September, Covers will be holding their second Help for Hospices Week and donating £1 for each registered customer that makes a purchase during that time.

The generous company has also pledged to give a huge £20,000 of their own money to kick start the campaign and further bolster funds.

On September 16, volunteers from St. Catherine’s Hospice will join Covers staff at the Horsham and Rudgwick depots, for a ‘builders bake off’, to sell an array of delicious homemade sweet treats and goodies. Raffle tickets will also be available, to purchase throughout the week, with amazing prizes up for grabs, including a London Hotel Theatre Break for two and a £500 Covers Home

Improvements voucher.

St. Catherine’s Hospice helps people in the local community, affected by serious illness such as cancer, heart failure and motor neurone disease. The hospice relies heavily on the donations from the local community to meet the £5 million of annual running costs.

Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in Sussex and cares for 300 children and young adults with progressive life-limiting conditions. It currently costs well over £3 million each year to provide care services to their patients.

Rupert Green, Chairman of Covers, said: “We are delighted to be running our Help for Hospices fundraising event for a second consecutive year. Every contribution will count, so we hope as many people as possible will join us to support these amazing charities that do such incredible work for the communities around us.”

Tickets for the raffle will cost £1 each, or £10 for a book of 10, and will be available to purchase in all Covers’ depots from August 15.

For many suffering from Coeliac disease, Gluten intolerance, and for those simply wanting to avoid potential allergens, beer has been one to avoid.

However, Hepworths Brewery, using traditional craft brewing, and knowledge of the ingredients, produces a full range of Gluten Free ales and lagers, which are naturally Gluten Free, without additives.

“It all starts in the field,” said Andy Hepworth, “ We work with farmers who understand our needs, and are willing to plant to our requirements over several years, to ensure our supply.

“We choose a low protein barley. (Gluten is a protein) and then we “mash” it to break down the gluten. As the brewing continues, the Gluten is further reduced.”

The resulting beer or ale is tested by an external laboratory, and registers under 10 parts per million (ppm). The Coeliac Society accepts 20 ppm of detect-

able Gluten as being Gluten Free; Hepworths is half of this!

“Easy,” was Andy’s reply, “ We are meticulous about our methods, and ingredients, just as we have always been. Our bottled and keg beer is just as good and full flavoured as always.” In fact, it is exactly the same!

The Lashings All Stars XI coached by Gordon Greenidge returned to Horsham (following their visit in 2006, part of Horsham’s prize for winning the National Knock Out Cup at Lord’s the year before) in a major fund raising event for Horsham Cricket Club and the Lashings Foundation, which helps sports players.

HCC again demonstrated how well they stage big events. On the hottest day of the year a large crowd encircled the ground, children bounced and slid on fairground activities alongside busy food and drink stalls. But, cricket was the name of the game with Horsham colts being put through their paces in the nets and John Emburey’s fielding and bowling drills in the middle. Thomas Alexander told the District Post: “My batting session with Chris Lewis was very helpful because I’ve been struggling a bit lately!” and Sam Bushby said: “I picked up some very useful leg spinning tips from

Chris Schofield” And, fresh from the simulator firing balls at up to 90 mph, Adam Goacher added: “It was slightly unreal, but I’d like to have another go on it!” Then there was an U16 game, West Chiltington beating Horsham convincingly while lunch for 200 guests was served in the marquee, Horsham President Barry Peay saying in his introduction: “We’re working hard to get county cricket back at Horsham – if the reduced number of Championship fixtures accommodates that,” before quipping: “Fortunately those Lashings players here today that have tortured Sussex on this ground are now a bit older and won’t plague our players this afternoon – hopefully!”

Kim Dennis of Crabtree Cavaliers successfully bid to face an over from Monty Panesar – who told us that his proudest moment for England was batting with Jimmy Anderson to deny the Aussies in the Ashes at Cardiff. After making some solid connections, Kim said: “It was an emotional experience!” Then, with the Horsham Ladies’ tea tent in full swing, 65 year old Greenidge gave a short batting demonstration ahead of the T20 match, in which,

accompanied by the dulcet tones of Henry Blofeld’s commentary, Michael Munday took 3-16 and 18 year old Tara Norris of Horsham and Sussex Ladies grabbed a scalp and pouched a catch before she sets off on a sponsored playing trip to Australia.

Lashings notched up 152-6, Sherwin Campbell top-scoring with 38 and then opened their bowling with Tino Best sending down bouncers interspersed with some sledging. Sam Bell made 26 and Sam Attfield 20 but John Emburey took 4-18 and Lashings clearly came to win, triumphing by 40 runs. Staunch Horsham supporter, Horsham Football’s Frank King said: “It’s great to see the ground really buzzing – the Horsham Festival is so special but this is the next best thing!” Horsham Cricket Club Hon Treasurer Colin Mitcham, who had worked tirelessly with the club office ladies and an army of volunteers to put on the event, summed up with: “It’s been a great day, really benefitting the club all round and keeping us on the cricket map. We need to work out the financials but it’s safe to say that we’ve made some money.”

Shelter right to back SME house builders, says FMB The Government could miss its target to build one million new homes by 2020 unless it unlocks the potential of SME house builders, says the Federation of Master Build-

ers (FMB) in response to a new report from the homeless charity Shelter.

Sarah McMonagle, Director of External Affairs at the FMB, said: “Even prior to the refer-

endum vote, the Government faced an uphill struggle to meet its own target of building one million homes by the end of this Parliament. The number of annual completions have risen steadily over the past couple of years, but not sufficiently to suggest that there’s any margin for error when it comes to the Government’s attempt to increase output. It’s still too early to tell what effect the decision to Brexit will have but it stands to reason that any wobbles in the house building industry will inevitably have a profound effect on our ability to hit that target. It’s therefore essential that the Government is aware of the risks and does everything in its power to mitigate those risks.”

McMonagle continued: “While we’ve been encouraged by the suggestion from the new PM that she will continue to prioritise housing, we need more than just words – we

need bold new policy interventions. As Shelter’s report identifies, there’s a compelling case for turbo-charging the SME house building sector, which policy makers have started to recognise is key to reaching the levels of house building that we need. Some progress is being made in terms of reforming the planning process and improving access to finance for smaller firms but there’s much more that the Government can and should be doing. Over and above Shelter’s recommendations to the Government, we’re calling on Ministers to lift the borrowing on local authorities and allow councils to be significant house builders once more. This will help calm any confidence wobbles among private developers and put the house building industry back on track, helping us reach that target of one million homes.”

The first Game of the week was against where 3 triples played 18 ends of friendly bowls, with Ewhurst finding themselves just ahead at midway. Len Adsett and team fought back from 10/5

down to within 1 point, just losing out on the last end 16/17. John Brown, Julie Day and Mick Ayling snatched victory on the final end to finish 16/15. Skip, Clare Stevens, with lead, Kath Ayling and number 2, Adey Stratton, finished 25 shots to 15 to snatch top rink.

The final result was a 57/47 win for Pulborough.

Against local rivals Petworth 3 of the 4 triples finished with just 1 or 2 points between them, but John Brown, with lead, Joyce Woods and Adey Stratton as number 2, dominated their opposing players with a 29/7 win; Pulborough finished with a 67/49 victory.

By the halfway stage the hosts had picked up an 8 and a 4 along with seven counts of 3. In the second half ‘Hurst perked up a little but could do little to prevent Horsham Park running out winners by a rather large margin.

Magnussen spectacularly crashed out on lap five; although taken to hospital Magnussen was later released suffering from an ankle injury.

During the race Palmer made three pit stops as he suffered with tyre degradation and rising temperatures. After starting on soft tyres, he pitted on lap six for soft tyres, then lap 22 to change to medium and finally lap 34 to switch to supersoft.

After the race Palmer said “We had our best qualifying here.

Both cars had a great start and ran in the top ten for a while. We could have had a strong race but the safety car pulled a lot of people back into play. It’s a shame not to get better results in the end but this weekend has been better than we expected overall.

I saw Kevin crash in my rear mirrors. It’s not nice to see because it’s a really, really fast part of the track. I’m glad he’s ok”.

Top rink for Billingshurst went to Roger Moore, Marion Clark & Alan Knight (+10).

Horsham Park Bowls Club Horley Bowls Club 59 – 68 Horsham Park Horsham Park continued their winning streak at Horley Bowls Club. Park won on 2 rinks, drew the third but lost the fourth, winning overall by 68 to 59. Park’s top rink went to skip Frank Heath with Kamran Nadim and Ros Medland who scored consistently to win by 11 shots, 21 shots to 9.

Horsham Bowls Club In the run-up to their finals weekend on September 3 and 4Horsham Bowling Club played only two matches in the week.

They played host to 4 men’s teams from West Sussex Tourists Club who comprise of members from existing clubs around West Sussex who come together to play a selection of teams in the area.

At the finish, rinks were shared 2 all, and the points tally came to 66 – 66. A very fitting result, with Horsham top rink going to skip Keith Dellard, aided by Peter Wren, Mick Walton and Mike Parr.

Next was Homefield Park, Worthing, who visited Horsham for four mixed rinks. Breaking at half-time for tea, Horsham were ahead by 7 points, but fortunes swayed to and fro after the interval, ending in victory for the visitors by just 6, 78 - 84. Horsham top rink was Sally Temple, Guy Stanley, Fran Baillie and skip Lesley Grogan, 25 - 15.

Athletics The annual Flyers Five Race – organised and run by the Fittleworth Flyers Running Club - will take place this Sunday, September 4.

The race takes a scenic 5 mile course through country lanes and woodland bridleway paths around Fittleworth, starting at 11.00am in Limbourne Lane, Fittleworth.

The organisers still have spaces open for entrants and anyone interested in taking part should visit www.fittleworthflyers.org.

Fittleworth Flyers Five Race is this weekend

Dejected Billingshurst relegated Sussex Premier League Billingshurst 99 All Out (40.5 overs) East Grinstead 101-2 (17.2 overs) East Grinstead won by 8 wickets Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Billingshurst’s slim chance of Premier League survival evaporated when they crashed to a paltry 99 all out at East Grinstead.

They bowl and field well, especially at home, but their batting has been a constant problem, despite several players regularly getting promising starts. Against East Grinstead Stuart Barber got 21, Mike Burroughs 19 and Sussex’s Abidene Sakande 11, but they were the only batsmen to reach double figures as wicket keeper Tim Cummins was busy with four catches and a stumping. Brad Hatchett, Toby Pettman and George Cave each took three wickets.

Billingshurst then quickly dismissed county player Fynn Hudson-Prentice but the 100 target was impossible to defend, James Adkin finishing on 40 and Cummins 32, both undefeated, Sakande taking 2-49.

Billingshurst were dealt a body blow when their prolific Sri Lankan all rounder Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi was mysteriously refused a

visa despite having spent the previous four seasons with them before returning home each September. That refusal had a demoralising effect from which Billingshurst never fully recovered. Late Eastbourne goal sinks YM SCFL Premier Division Eastbourne United 2 – 1 Horsham YMCA Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor A late goal from Eastbourne United’s Liam Baitup broke YM’s hearts in this close fought encounter played in hot humid conditions at United’s Oval ground.

The first half hour summed up the conditions and the two sides as neither side put together any long periods of play with the only attempts on goal by both YM and United coming from long range hopeful efforts. In the latter stages of the half Phil Johnson, Ashley Dugdale and Sam Schaaf created a couple of good openings and at the other end a spell of United pressure called YM ‘keeper Mark Fox into urgent action. However with both sides cancelling each other out in the energy sapping conditions the half time whistle came with both sides at a goalless stalemate.

The game was given the spark it needed immediately from the restart when strait from the kick off a passing move involving a number of YM players was finished from close range by Schaaf. With both sides now having moved up a gear the game became a much more open affair and United had a chance to equalise with 50 minutes gone but Tom Gilbert de-

fended well to prevent the hosts pulling level.

They equaliser did come 15 minutes later when the dangerous and quick Bailo Camara collected a through ball before advancing and giving ‘keeper Fox no chance.

The equally dangerous Schaaf had a couple of chances to restore the YM lead but all were dealt with by the United defence and in the last minute of normal time Gilbert fired over the United crossbar.

Then deep into injury time substitute Baitup popped up on the 6 yard box to beat Fox and steal the 3 points.

YM manager Peter Buckland said ‘We had a few absences today and players had to adapt to a different system as a result, we played a containing game and nearly gained the result we wanted’.

Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Horsham YMCA were looking to put the disappointment of the defeat at Eastbourne behind them while Loxwood were looking for their first win of the season.

On paper it looked like a close game, in reality it was a big first win for Loxwood.

The opening 10 minutes was a hectic end to end affair where both sides came close on a number of occasions. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute when after minimal contact on the lively Toby House the referee pointed to the spot and the Loxwood penalty kick was thumped home by Sam Beard. YM had chances to equalise through Nick Sullivan and Phil Johnson but the man of the match, Loxwood ‘keeper Sam Smith, stopped everything that came his way. the 38th minute when some hesitant YM defending was taken advantage of by Loxwood captain Byron Napper, who met Beard’s cross unchallenged to head past Fox for a 2-0 half time lead.

After just 2 minutes of the restart Loxwood effectively finished the game as a contest when the impressive Beard grabbed his second and his team’s third of the night.

Manager Buckland made a triple substitution in an attempt to restore some respectability but it was a Loxwood substitute, Mark Cave, who made it a night to forget for YM when he added a fourth seconds after coming on. Smith continued to amaze all with a number of quality saves but in the end Loxwood saw the game out for a deserved victory.

YM boss Peter Buckland said “‘No excuses tonight - we didn’t take the early chances and paid the price but no one died, we need to dust ourselves down and turn this around. It’s a long season but we were second best on the night, we go again on Saturday.”

The Hornets picked up their first point of the season at Hythe Town in a thrilling 3-3 draw after being 2-0 up at one stage.

Playing without club captain Joe Shelley and recent signing Charlie Pitcher, who both seem to have taken the decision to drop back down a division and play for Pagham and Shoreham respectively, Horsham, put in a fine battling display on the Kent coast.

After Horsham escaped a loud penalty appeal for a clumsy Lee Carney challenge MacDevitt again went close as his pace and energy caused problems. The lead was extended when following sustained Horsham pressure a corner from Terry Dodd found Charlie Farmer at the far post who beat Agu despite the ‘keeper’s best attempts. break they grabbed the equaliser when after Alex Duncan’s clearing header fell to Alfie May on the edge of the area the Hythe man found the top corner for a 2-2 half time score line.

The second half began as an end to end affair with both teams looking to take the lead and the inevitable goal came from Horsham’s Darren Boswell; Terry Dodd picked him out in the 51st minute and he curled a shot into the bottom of the Hythe net. Hythe now desperate for the equaliser piled forward, giving Josh Pelling in goal plenty of work. Just when it looked as though Horsham would hold on for an unexpected win Hythe salvaged a point with 4 minutes left on the clock. After substitute Tom Lawley lost the ball Hyde broke away finally ending up with Kenny Pogue smashing his shot into the roof of the net for what in the end was a fair point apiece.

Heath bounce back from cup defeat for another league win SCFL Premier Division Broadbridge Heath 3 - 1 Arundel Football Dave Snith - Sports Editor Heath bounced back from their disappointing midweek defeat in the RUR Cup to make it three straight wins in the Premier Division and a second place in the division.

After a very close opening half hour in which both sides played some good possession football using the width of the pitch, the only thing lacking was the final ball and an opening goal.

The opener came just after the 30 minute mark when Joe Holvey broke away down the right flank on 30 minutes and the Heath fullback picked out Shaun Findlay running into the penalty area where an Arundel defender brought him to the ground for a penalty which Jake Holmes to the right of the diving goalkeeper.

Heath were now in the ascendancy and Findlay and Jamal Sultan both worried the Arundel ‘keeper.

On 35 minutes another Joe Holvey run down the right ended with a near post cross for Jake Holmes

to nip in between the goalkeeper and fullback to score his sixth league goal of the season.

In first half injury time a foul on Holmes 30 yards from goal resulted in a freekick and Stuart Chester blasted a right foot shot that struck a defender on its way to goal and deflected the ball into the net making it 3-0 at the break.

The second was a very close contest with the heat and humidity playing its part.

It would be easy to merely accredit Horsham’s demise to poor batting, of which there was clear evidence, but that would demean the bowling of Fleming and left arm spinner Luke Barnard, whose 36 over aggregate secured 9-106 with 9 maidens. The pair now have 45 league wickets each – six of their Horsham scalps were bowled or LBW, amid some overadventurous stroke play. The pitch assisted the bowlers with variable bounce and Will Beer and Munday might have been a difficult proposition but a target of 122 in 67 overs was indefensible and Roffey openers Liam Gibson and Theo Rivers demonstrated how to bat intelligently, patiently defending and despatching scoring opportunities, knocking off the runs without loss. Gibson’s 51 – his second half century of the campaign – both against Horsham – and Rivers’ 71 included a joint 17 fours and two sixes, the game ending at 4.20 with 30 points for Roffey and none for Horsham.

Medium pacer Fleming told the District Post: “It moved off the seam but Horsham played too many shots and once we got Beero out that was key; he can build an innings.” Gallagher agreeing: “It wasn’t an easy wicket but we got

out to some rogue shots.” For under-prepared Horsham, now fourth, it was plainly a game that they would have preferred not to play, their dejected Captain James Johnson, possibly playing his penultimate game of cricket, saying: “That result was always likely to happen. There was nothing in it for us so I’m not really surprised. We didn’t play as a team; we haven’t done that when we’ve been up against it.”

Elsewhere, Cuckfield won again – with five balls to spare – and with 386 points are pushing Roffey (409) all the way. With one game remaining Roffey need eight points to be certain of winning their third consecutive title, Captain Matt Davies telling us: “That was our best bowling and fielding performance of the season.

We kept it tight and the pressure talked but they gave their wickets away surprisingly easily, quite arrogantly sometimes. Cuckfield have to play relegated Worthing – that should give them 30 points, but if we can’t get eight points in our final game at Brighton (tomorrow, Saturday) then we don’t deserve to win the league!”

Brighton were relegation candidates but have won three of their last four games, seeing off both Preston Nomads and East Grinstead in the process.

The vociferous bank holiday crowd were treated to immediate Horsham attacks, following which Lewes responded but shot wide.

Then Lewes’ Afolabi Coker was sent off for excessive pushing on Ashley Jones just outside the area before, in the 13th minute, man of the match Darren Bosworth collected a side-footed pass and

crashed it into the net to give Horsham the lead. A series of Horsham attacks were saved until a well constructed foray down the left enabled Boswell to cross the ball for Terry Dodd to blast home the second goal. Both sides then had corners, Horsham narrowly missing ahead of finding the side netting as, before the break Lewes’ Josh Jones was yellow carded for an infringement on Boswell.

Beginning the second half with a 2-0 cushion Horsham continued attacking, Liam McDevitt heading over the bar until Boswell was in

However a collapse in the second half saw them blown away by the hosts.

Even after 15 minutes of the second half Heath looked on track but just before the hour Sam Cane scored the equaliser before three late goals gave the score-line an uneven look. Kerran Boylan put CDG into the lead after 72 minutes and then Ben Brooker on 83 minutes and a fourth deep into injury time from Michael Belli gave the home side a very flattering margin of victory.

Heath welcomes Haywards Heath Town to the Leisure Centre tomorrow (Saturday). Town are the early favourites to end up as league champions come next spring.
