Horsham Football Club is heartbroken to announce that Club President Frank King has passed away in hospital following a short illness. Frank King, Life President of Horsham Football Club had been honoured with a Ryman League long service award, and was born and raised in Horsham. He clearly recalled football restarting at the old Queens Road ground in 1945, saying: “The club buildings were used as a depot during war, so the players had to get changed in The Queens Head! I was first introduced to the club when I went to watch a visiting

Cossack show, then I joined the juniors and on match days sold programmes at a penny a time and delivered club letters round the town, so they invited me onto the committee and I played for the second team.” Frank trained with the first team and was a ball boy, too and could proudly recite the entire home grown side contesting Horsham’s first major FA Cup game – against Notts County – in 1947. But, there was far more to Frank King than just football: family life, St Mary’s Parish Church, Sussex and Horsham cricket and, especially, his be-

loved dogs, so much part of his life down the years, were also vital ingredients. After extensive business experience locally, service on the hospital committee, running the youth guild at St Mary’s and singing in the choir, Frank became a verger, which, unexpectedly led to a unique opportunity when he spotted an advertisement for a Verger Sacristan at Westminster Abbey. In ten years there Frank met the Queen, Prince Phillip, Charles, Diana, the Queen Mother, Bill Clinton, John Major and top sportsmen attending services, all leaving a lasting impression. He conducted tours, led processions, prepared communion and locked up the building for the night when everyone had gone. Frank told The District Post: “I was so lucky, this was a great privilege. I enjoyed so many magic moments at the Abbey and they continued to invited to their garden parties after I retired.” Frank loved attending St Mary’s and after several years of uncertainty since Horsham FC’s departure from Queen Street was eagerly awaiting seeing the Hornets play at their own purpose built stadium, sadly a sight that he did not quite live to see. Horsham Football Club CEO John Lines told the District Post: “This is a very sad day for the Club, Frank was much-loved for his enthusiasm and encouragement and our thoughts are very much with his wife Pauline and the family at this most sad time. There will never be another Frank.”

Plum Jam organisers would love to see residents greeting the fleet as it pasees through the various areas of the District and say tnst you should be ablentomsee them pass between 830-930am. With each owner looking to get their hands on the various prizes such as best in show, best interior or peoples choice it is a chilled relaxed atmosphere amongst passionate owners that culminates with them camping under the stars near the South Downs. Organiser Plum Jacobs is looking forward to the day and says, “We have assembled the largest display of VW’s at a Horsham Jam so far, as well as a new display zone at The Rec Rooms. It’s going to be a great show and I hope that as many people as possible enjoy looking at all the different varieties and styles of these iconic vehicles. We have got some amazing looking examples joining us for the first time this year and our very own Plum Jam jam. Don’t go home without a pot ot two.” Further information is available at www.plumjam.show

Horsham’s Caribbean Festival ‘Stirs it up’

Photos by Toby Phillips A normally sleepy Sunday in Carfax, Horsham was up and ‘Cool Runnin’ right from the off as hundreds of people took in the chilled vibes of the town’s first Caribbean festival and holiday show, organised by Horsham District Council in partnership with The Sussex Travel Company of Queen Street. A ‘Holiday Pavilion’ featuring representatives from many Caribbean islands, leading hotels, tour operators and Virgin Atlantic airlines were kept busy, as visitors found out more about exciting island holiday options, completing questions for the show’s big holiday competition as they went. There were also plenty of samples to enjoy along the way, including rum and chocolate from Grenada. An interactive programme of performers and attractions built steadily towards a highly anticipated finale featuring top tribute band The Marley Experience that delivered an hour long set, packed full of crowd pleasers, including Stir It Up, Could You Be Loved and Exodus. Tanya Pace, owner of The Sussex Travel Company, said: “What a fantastic day! We were blown

away with the attendance; it was great to chat with all our existing and new customers. Wishing all the best of luck to everyone who enters the competition to win our amazing prize of a week in Tobago staying at two fabulous resort hotels the Coco Reef and Castara Retreats with flights from British Airways.” Organisers were thrilled to see such a great mix of people dancing and enjoying the rhythms and beats of the Caribbean. There were gentle Steel Pan calypsos from Rachel Hayward, local Latin dance maestro’s, Dance Cubano who soon had people salsa-ing and Triniboi Joocie and his Carnival dancers played two brilliant sets that ended in an ‘all join in’ Soca conga that filled the area in front of the bandstand. Local dance group Rhythm and Sole presented a dynamic set of performances from across their age ranges, and lots of youngsters got the chance to sample some pro-limbo fun from Itara. As visitors followed the blue sprayed footprints, from Swan Walk, they encountered a whole vista of Caribbean theming. A lovely chalk pavement drawing of

a pool of tropical fish created by the talented Annalees Lim (who had also designed the colourful programme treasure map) fronted a forward performance area featuring potted palms from The Big Plant Nursery of Ashington. Next to this, Zac (from Horsham General Market) presented a fascinating array of Caribbean fruit and veg. The new events Giant Deckchair attracted plenty of selfies, placed as it was in front of the wonderfully exotic ‘Tobago bus’, and Southwater Water Sports were kept busy through the day as people asked about getting in some practise locally, (before that Caribbean holiday?). Youngsters really enjoyed the Pirate Ship that roamed the Carfax, Pirate Pete dispensing balloon cutlasses and very old pirate jokes amongst the Carfax trees that had, somehow, become filled with (inflatable) parrots. Billy the Pineapple and Nicola the Parrot brought many a smile and posed for pictures. Two small sand pits provided day long entertainment as children dug for ‘treasure’ finding glass ‘jewels’, shells and ‘gold’ coins which they could swap for a piece of Caribbean fruit

or a piece of ‘Horsham Rock’. Before the Marley experience, under 11’s Pirates and Mermaids followed Pirate Pete the Pirate Ship to the bandstand where Rachel, from sponsors Non Stop Party Shop, awarded a prize voucher to Alex, as the junior winner, and Kerrie, from sponsors Clear Marketing, awarded the grown-ups prize of a Caribbean hamper to Jane. Not knowing how popular the event would be, the organisers had only booked a small number of street food stalls, trying mostly to keep to an authentic Caribbean menu. All proved popular - especially Soul Street’s jerk chicken, Ginger Rookes’ corn fritters and Robin’s Caribbean Kitchen’s curried mutton, sweet treats and smoothies from ‘Vintage Vibe’ completing the menu. The Flair Affair Caribbean cocktail bar operated by an all ex-Wabi team not only quenched the thirst alongside Hepworth’s but entertained as Benz showed off his flairing tricks to the delight of the crowds around the bandstand. Carfax based, The Horsham Cellar, were again fully involved, hosting tastings of St. Lucian

rum and offering a prize bottle of Chairman’s Reserve for the best ‘on the day selfie’ taken on the Giant deckchair (Use the hashtag #HorshamCaribbeanDay to enter your picture on Instagram) Caribbean travel zone explorers have until Sunday night (26 May) to get their entries in, using www. caribbeancompetition.online for a chance to win the amazing £2700 value Tobago holiday for two or one of a number of goody bag runners up prizes. If you visited the Horsham Caribbean Festival, please give the organisers your feedback via the survey on the @horshamtimewellspent page and you could win a bottle of St. Lucia Spiced Rum from The Horsham Cellar. The ‘Life’s a Beach’ sequence of free Horsham town centre events continues next Sunday, 26 May, as an expanded Plum Jam ‘19 rolls into and across town. This year, The REC Rooms spreads the Plum Jam ‘air cooled’ chilled vibe to their bowling alley car park, with a California Zone of surf themed campers and a very special music line-up that has the Chilli Fighters as a rocking finale. See you there!

Resting place of Mr Pirie lovingly restored by local bar Manager Ross and Jamie (along with volunteers Nico Draisey and Steven Latto), spent several days visiting the site and with their hard work and the knowledge from Jamie’s work as a restorer have completed quite an inspiring refurbishment. Jamie offered his services at a fraction of the price and Piries Bar covered the costs of materials and labour.

I’m proud to have been able to take on this project and hope the grave will remain for another 141 years A Horsham bar manager has found and carefully restored the dilapidated final resting place of William Pirie, the namesake of the new Piries Place development. Whilst researching the history of Mr Pirie, Piries Bar manager, Ross Andrews discovered that he was laid to rest in Denne Road Cemetery less than half a mile away from where a bronze statue of Mr Pirie and his Donkey currently stands in Piries Place. Ross found the grave in a very sad condition and enlisted the

help of customer and Monumental Mason, Jamie Edworthy to help with the work. “Very few of us are going to leave a legacy behind in this world where we will be remembered 141 years after our passing, Mr Pirie is one of those lucky few. Upon finding his grave however I was struck with a sadness that he had been forgotten here at least and decided it was my obligation to bring the monument some care and attention”, said Ross.

“Denne road cemetery is full of monuments to many important names from Horsham’s history, from the Hurst family who owned much of the land in Horsham during the 19th century to William Lintott who has a pub named after him in Southwater”, said Ross. “I’m proud to have been able to take on this project and hope the grave will remain for another 141 years, long after I have gone. Cyclists to travel from Horsham to Nice for St Catherine’s Hospice

A team of 6 cyclists and 2 support crew are preparing for an 11 day challenge cycling from Horsham to Nice in the South of France in aid of St Catherines Hospice . With a total of 55000ft to climb whilst on the trip, this is an endurance challenge of quite epic proportions. Setting themselves the target of £20000, work is underway to both train, and fundraise for the ride. With just over £5000 collected so far, progress is good. Training began at the start of the year and ride director Steve

o’Carroll says, “None of us can be classed as anything close to elite athletes, training has been quite eye opening to what is in front of us.” The inspiration for the event came from Pauls desire to support the hospice after the excellent support they provided his Family and the family of one of his best friends. After years of organising charity golf days and raising over £50000 he wanted to continue to do more. At the age of 30 Paul ran the London marathon raising funds for St

Catherines and decided he should set another big challenge once he hit 40. Initially aiming to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats it was when holding conversations and seeking advice from fellow cyclists that the idea of cycling through France came up. It seemed to hold more appeal and a team was soon recruited. Consisting of - 6 x Cyclists and a 2 Man Support Team: Cyclists - Paul Hebden/George Hebden/Nick O’Carroll/Matt

Sprigge/Lewis Reeves/Dean Robinson Support Van Team – Steve O’Carroll/Chris Macauley They will set out on June 8th positive that the challenge can be completed and more importantly that the fundraising goal can be met. Prior to saddling up there will be a fundraising day in the Carfax on May 25th from 10am-4pm where people can meet the team, check out some of the bikes, enter a raffle, enjoy a cake sale and other smaller fundraising opportunities. For most of the team, this challenge is the first of its kind for them, “Nick cycled Route 40 from Atlantic City to San Francisco in 2010 to raise money for Help for Heros so he is well aware of what lays ahead. The rest of us are keen cyclists and sportsmen with an interest in fitness and wellbeing so have been trainimg hard but we are well aware that this is an ambitious challenge.” Says Steve. The ‘Growing Without a Garden’ Award, the most recently introduced category, is designed to recognise anyone who enjoys growing without the use of a conventional garden space. Entries must demonstrate imaginative use of limited conditions to provide a horticultural display, whether it’s in containers, baskets, on wall space or balconies, to give a few examples. Emma now passes on advice, guidance and expert tuition to a variety of aspiring businesswomen though 1:1 mentoring, online courses and The Clique membership Citing both her Father and Brother as the biggest inspirations on her life she knew that to achieve the success she wanted for herself and others that she needed to look back to her past to give herself a better future, “My Dad is just the biggest inspiration, he always put us before himself, no matter what, we had next to no money but it didn’t matter, the love and support he constantly gave us means he is my real life superhero. “ Being a single parent to an autistic son also presented chal-

lenges that Emma felt initially unprepared for but, “It made motherhood a lot harder at first and made the creation of a meaningful relationship a challenge, I started to feel very depressed, and had no confidence and then one day I just thought. There had to

I had the choice to be happy, and confident, my past did not equal my future, I could rewrite my story be a better way.” Signing up to training courses, burying her head in countless books and investing in a 1:1 mentor was when the answers started to come, “I had the choice to be happy, and confident, my past did not equal my future, I could rewrite my story.” This new found motivation led to a much improved relationship with her Son, and a new chapter in her career After studying beauty therapy when her Son was just a baby, Emma found herself headhunted to work in a luxury salon, unfortunately the hours required wouldn’t allow her the time she needed to give to the new little Man in her life. So, she swapped

the nail varnish for the petrol and spent 6 years working in a garage. Whilst enjoying it, it wasn’t what she had seen her future being so set herself up as a nail technician, quickly building up a huge portfolio of customers and finally becoming the success that she knew, and her Dad knew was always possible. Fast forward to 2018 and the passion, was stronger than ever, Emma had realised that the beauty industry was a huge one with many businesses faltering before they had even got started, she had seen talented people try to set up on their own with plenty of hope but unfortunately no understanding of running a business, and it is from this that “Her Beauty Empire” was born, the courses, the books and the experience were now going to be put to use to help these other aspiring business owners make a success of themselves, “Lots of wonderful people, with fantastic talents are offering incredible services yet have empty booking sheets, or see very little profit for all the tremendous effort they put in. The aim is to change that. You can become a member of The Clique where every month you have access to a new masterclass from a guest expert, we hold live mentoring Q&A’s, downloadable workbooks and social media graphics. We help you discover how to gain and maintain clients,

learn about marketing, branding, mindset and more. Every tool you may need for your business success is right there for you, along with a growing supportive community. And its working, the testimonials she receives speak volumes and are a perfect endorsement for what Emma is achieving with one member stating, “Emma has been my business mentor for 4months and has helped me so much with moving things forward for me. Ill be opening my own salon in June. I cant recommend her mentoring enough.” So maybe its apt to leave the final word to Emma herself, this has

mitted to becoming the best version of myself and inspiring and empowering others to do the same. “

Stevens Drake gives advice on council tax discount for illness sufferers

Are you missing out on a council tax discount? If you have dementia, Parkinson’s or suffered a stroke or live with someone who does, you could be entitled to a discount There are various reasons that mean you qualify for a reduction in your council tax, but it’s a littleknown fact that dementia or any other severe mental impairment could be one of those reasons and if you have been medically certified with the condition and are entitled to a disability benefit, then you will be eligible. The most common qualifying benefits are Attendance Allowance (lower or higher rate), Disability Living Allowance (higher or middle rate care components) and Personal Independence Payment (lower or higher rate of the daily living component). If the person with dementia or other severe mental impairment lives alone, they will be exempt from paying council tax. The council tax reduction ap-

plies to households where only one other person resides along with the person with who has been diagnosed as the person will qualify for the Single Person Discount - this reduces the annual council tax bill by 25%. In a household with two adults one with an impairment - and children under the age of 18, the above still applies as household members are only eligible for council tax when they reach the age of 18. Some carers living with a person with an impairment will qualify for a council tax exemption and be disregarded if they fall into one of two groups. The first group must meet all the following criteria: •care for over 35 hours a week, •live in the same property as the person they care for, •are not the partner of the person they care for, •are not the parent of the person they care for, if the person cared for is aged under 18

•the person being cared for must be entitled to one of the following benefits: •Disability Living Allowance (middle or highest rate of the care component) •Personal Independence Payment (either rate of the daily living component) •either rate of Attendance Allowance or Constant Attendance Allowance. The second group of carers must meet all the following criteria: •provide care or support on behalf of a local authority, government department or charity, or provide care through an introduction by a charity, where the person being cared for is the carer’s employer, •are employed to care for the person for 24 hours a week or more, •are paid £44 or less per week, •live where the care is given. It’s worth noting that more than one person in the same property can count as a carer, for example where caring duties are being shared. Please also be aware that a claim may be backdated to when he person became entitled to the exemption so any council tax that has been paid incorrectly could be refunded. If you’d like to discuss your eligibility and how to claim, please contact our Private Clients Team Erica Pearce-Howard on 01293 596925 or by email erica.pearce-howard@stevensdrake.com or Sue Tipper on 01293 596908 or by email sue.tipper@ stevensdrake.com .

How to build Customer Loyalty

Our Award Winning Business expert, Janette Whitney gives advice retaining your valued customers

janette whitney Business Consultant www.whitneyassocs.co.uk

Don’t let your customers go after just one purchase. Win them back time and time again with a follow-up program. Here’s some top tips: 1. Thank-you notes Take the time to show your customers that you genuinely appreciate their business. They’ll remember your thoughtfulness because most of your competition won’t send out thank-you notes. Just make sure you don’t do it the same time each month or they will feel used. 2. Postcard mailings

Send out monthly mailings that make good refrigerator fodder, such as “Quote of the Month,” “Recipe of the Month” or useful tips on such topics as time-management, gardening or anything else that interests the bulk of your customers. 3. E-mail updates Providing your customers with regular product, service and customer updates via email at least once per month will convey a sense of positive momentum. This keeps your customers in the loop and, over time, gets them excited to be involved with you and motivates them to pass on referrals. 4. Getting together over coffee or lunch

Try to spend face time in a “no sales” environment with your customers. Ask about their family, hobbies, personal goals and so forth. When you show customers that you really care about them on a personal level, they’re yours for life. If you have a lot of customers and this is simply not possible then choose your top 20% … the ones that purchase the most and are the best to deal with. 5. Birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions These occasions are very important to your customers and their families and friends. Be among the few who actually remember a customer’s special days, and that customer will never forget you!

But of course, you will need to keep the information in order to use it! 6. Follow up on well-being For example, if you find that a customer’s wife has been sick, call periodically just to find out how she’s recovering. 7. Pass referrals One of the most powerful ways to encourage loyalty in customers is to pass them referrals. When you get a chance, scroll through your customer database and think through people you know who might add value to your customers. 8. Post-sale feedback Demonstrate that you care about the quality of your service. Call customers and ask them questions like: ∙ Are you pleased with the service

you received? ∙ What did you like most about working with us? ∙ What would you like to see improved? The Capitol Theatre welcomes back, by popular demand, the leading act of the Nordic fiddle scene FRIGG to its Horsham stage this Saturday (25 May 2019). Frigg features the premier talents of a generation of Finnish folk musicians. Renowned the world over, the group draws influence from their homeland alongside

those from their extensive travels – joyfully fusing Nordic and bluegrass flavours to create their own signature; Nordgrass. Tight interplay between four violins, with mandolin, cittern, guitar and contrabass, is spiced with a sparkling, high-energy stage show – presenting an outstanding display of richly exultant virtuosity on all fronts.

A smash at many of the world’s major folk festivals – including the Cambridge Folk Festival, Rainforest World Music Festival, Celtic Connections and WOMADelaide – and throughout countless tours, the global world music media have also featured Frigg extensively. Their most recent album, Frost on Fiddles (2017) has added to their bursting mantle of accolades – including their third Songlines Top of the World selection. Frigg features Alina Järvelä , Esko Järvelä, Tero Hyväluoma, Juho Kivivuori, Tommi Asplund, Ansi Salminen and Petri Prauda, in an enthralling union – Nordic musical mastery, with beautifully scenic detours. Tickets: £16.50, available from The Capitol Box Office 01403750220 or online: www.thecapitolhorsham.com

Studio Theatre celebrates women in entertainment The Hawth Studio, Crawley, will be paying homage to two great (and very different) women in entertainment this summer. Firstly, Breakthrough Theatre present Marilyn and ask who is Marilyn Monroe? One of the most iconic women in history, yet the world still asks the question, did we really know who she was? This play explores the life and death of Marilyn Monroe to discover who the real woman was behind the glitz and glamour that made her so well known. Marilyn’s story, told by Marilyn – alone in her dressing room, not the girl in that white dress with the pouting red lips and the curvaceous figure. Marilyn Monroe stripped back and bare – just an ordinary girl telling her story. Marilyn premiered at the Blue Orange Theatre in July 2017. It went on to make it’s West End transfer to Leicester Square Theatre at the beginning of this year and comes to The Hawth Studio on Friday 14 June. On Sunday 30 June, Kick In The Head present a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the loss of the great, unremittingly genteel, comedienne and monologist, Joyce Grenfell, Choice Grenfell. As Joyce would have said, “We request the pleasure of your company”, so head to The Hawth this June! Tickets are available from The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 and www.hawth.co.uk

Get your heart racing for Fix A Date Friday in Horsham The heart of Horsham should see extra love in the air on 21 June, when Brighton-based Love Doctor Monti aims to play Cupid with one of his Fix A Date Fridays events and those with tickets can bring a friend for free. Flirting in bars is commonplace around the world, but his formula is designed to take out the embarrassment of asking for phone numbers - or turning down requests. He sells a limited number of £15 tickets to four groups of overlapping ages who initially meet up in separate bars, and over the course of the evening, like love itself, they finally merge into one. The Sussex singletons in Horsham will even get bought a drink by host/organiser Love Doctor Monti in the last of three bars visited during the event. If they like each other romantically, they have 24 hours to text the host their name and the name of the person that they would like a date with. Love Doctor Monti then arranges dates without revealing

any phone numbers to the participants, and so makes life easy for singletons. Brighton & Hove-based Monti, aka Neil-Monticelli Harley-Rüdd, has been teaching the art of finding love and romance since his teenage years, in countries as far as Japan and Jamaica. In 2014, he set up his successful RightFlirt brand, which has since helped over 1,800 singles find a date through various events and holidays: “RightFlirt. club events mean that you invest less time in trying to find romance online and have more fun looking for love in person. “One night of flirting fun, around 45 minutes in each of the three different bars, and lots of new faces for dating face-to-face is how I hope new romances will continue to blossom like they did at my past Fix A Date in Gunwharf Quays in March. “In each bar, there are no potentially uncomfortable one to one situations, but always a group, so that singles are meeting organi-

cally. “The art of conversation is alive for romance, not just reliant on photoshopped phone images and tacky messages. “We help to try to create a relaxed ambience, with no pressure that you must date the person you are talking to.” With Fix A Date Fridays, even if you don’t find your dream lady

or gentleman, at least you get to chance to meet like-minded singletons. The bars should be buzzing in Horsham, but will the hearts be pumping on that Friday night in June? To learn more, please visit: www. RightFlirt.club or follow Love Doctor Monti on Twitter @lovedoctormonti and Facebook @lovedoctormonti

Weltons down to Brolly Brewery who have developed from their first foray into brewing in a garage in Wisborough Green. We also have twelve traditional and flavoured ciders from Cowfold’s Silly Moo and Wobblegate, Seacider from Ditchling, boosted by a couple of surprises from the West Country. Do you know the secret to selling your home?

Horsham Road, Rusper

Selling your house quickly is often key to taking your next step on the property ladder. While a bustling market can often mean a fast sale, markets where buyers hold the aces can result in lengthy frustration for sellers keen to move on. In that kind of market, it could be small differences that make your property stand out from the crowd meaning you can bag a quick sale while the competition remains frustrated. Here are our top tips for securing that dream fast sale... It’s all in the presentation Start with the front of your house. Look at it from a buyer’s perspective... would you buy it? If not then it could be time to spruce things up a little. Set about making a real first impression on your buyers when they arrive for a viewing. You want buyers to know the house is well looked after and cared for. Stage your home Anyone can stage their home for sale with a little bit of elbow grease, a small budget and a keen eye for detail. Remove any clutter, lay your table, plump any cushions, switch on corner lamps and put some fresh flowers out alongside a pleasant room fragrance. Set the temperature It’s not just the visual appearance of your home that will have an instant impact on potential buyers. It’s also how the property makes them feel. Prospective buyers would want to be warm in winter but cool if the viewing is in the summer. Display your rooms as they are meant to be used If your home is a three-bedroom property and you have advertised it as such, make sure you have three bedrooms on show when buyers arrive for viewings. If a buyer is viewing your home, there’s a strong chance their requirement will be the number of bedrooms you have, so make sure all these rooms are shown off as ‘bedrooms’.

Do a job on your decor Most people like to put their mark on a property but when it comes to selling that home, those splashes of personality can put off a buyer. The best thing to do is paint over any bold, bright walls with white or cream and add those bolder tones to the room in the form of cushions or flowers. Consider replacing any deep patterned wallpaper with something more neutral instead.

BRAND NEW HOMES Only two homes remaining in this exclusive brand new courtyard development. Finished to exacting standards using traditional materials with immense character. A truly stunning space to live in and entertain guests. Three double bedrooms, all with ensuite facilities and a stunning living/kitchen space enjoying huge volume. Private garden, driveway, car barn and further parking.

Freshen up your carpets or flooring If you’re lucky enough to live in a period property with traditional wood flooring, you’ll want to show it off in all its glory. If your carpets are in good condition, bringing in a professional carpet cleaner can also pay dividends when impressing buyers. The big selling point - your kitchen One of the first things buyers look for these days is a fully functioning kitchen that is a real heart of the home. If your kitchen is not brand new there are things you can do to liven up your space without breaking the bank. New worktops, freshly painted cupboard doors or even just new handles can make a big difference to a kitchen and can provide a clean and fresh appeal to buyers. Clean and pristine in the bathroom Closely behind the kitchen, buyers will be looking for a luxurious and relaxing bathroom space. Most buyers prefer a modern white suite and if you can, fit in a bath and shower, it’s amazing how many people only like to take one or the other! Barns Green touch team win Simon Viney Tournament Rugby - The Simon Viney Memorial Tag Tournament Martin Read - Sports Reporter This year’s Simon Viney Tag Tournament raised a fantastic £8,500, taking the total raised in the last ten years to well over £50,000. Down the years, the funds raised have supported wonderful charities, including The Wooden Spoon, who provide physically and mentally disabled children with sports facilities, St Barnabus Hospice, The Springboard Project for children with learning and physical disabilities, Clic Sargent for cancer treatment for young children, St Catherine’s Hospice, and Canine Partners, matchers of specially trained dogs with those in need of such assistance. Simon Viney sadly passed away from a degenerative heart condition at the far too young age of 22, just before Christmas 2009, and although he suffered from

learning difficulties, he refused to let that hold him back. Simon discovered a love and passion for rugby as a front or second row Barns Green Rugby Club forward, enjoying the game with his family. His memorial tournament is a sevens tag event for all ages and abilities of either gender and is very much a fun day with a competitive edge, a much-loved event. And, appropriately, this year’s tournament was won by the Barns Green touch team – they beat Kieran’s Fitties in the Semi Final and then, in the Final, The Honey Badgers, who had also figured in last year’s Final. Barns Green’s secret weapon was six year old Albie Hoyt, exhibiting identical skills as his father, Matt, Team Manager Nick Lewis saying: “These guys deserve this win, the hours they’ve put in over the past months – sheer dedication and professionalism on and off the pitch, I can’t think of a more deserving team!”

Roffey Captain Matt Davies told the District Post: “We got off to a really good start, Ben batting well again, but then lost wickets to a few poor shots. I was naturally pleased to get a few runs, but, although we were perhaps 40 or 50 short of where we’d hoped to be, we thought 235 was enough if we held our chances – which we did. It was a bit tight for comfort towards the end because they were going well mid innings, but the maximum points win puts us top of the table, on level pegging with Preston Nomads, who’ve also won their three games, as have Middleton.” On Saturday Roffey return home to take on East Grinstead, against whom they have had some tough battles in the past. Meanwhile, Roffey 2nd XI bounced back from last week’s defeat to Ansty with a dominant performance against Findon 1st XI, making it 2 wins from the opening 3 games. Batting first, Roffey posted an impressive 304-7 with stand out performances from Horsham YMCA reserve goalkeeper Mark Pavlovic (65) and Sachin Naik (97), putting the hosts in a commanding position, before bowling Findon out for 90. Sachin Naik (4-29), Fred Bridges (4-12) and Tom Barnes (2-13) were the pick of the Roffey bowlers. Skipper Matt Bidlake said: “It was a dominant performance from the team and a strong response following a disappointing result the weekend before. It is the first time that our batting, bowling and fielding has clicked this season and will give us a lot of confidence heading into next weekend’s fixture at Worthing”.

682 run fest ends in Horsham defeat Saturday May 18 THE 1st CENTRAL SUSSEX LEAGUE – ECB Premier Division Horsham 340-7 (50 overs) – Middleton 342-2 (47.5) Middleton won by 8 wickets – Horsham 11 points – Middleton 26 Cricket Martin Read - Sports Reporter Spectators at Horsham’s ground were treated to the highly unusual sight of four high class centuries, and when Horsham posted a very demanding 340, a home win was signalled, but it was not to be. Middleton mounted an excellent run chase and, Horsham, short of bowlers on a benign batting surface, were unable to contain evergreen Sean Heather, once on Sussex’s books, and the prolific Mahesh Rawat. With rain threatening (but not materialising) Middleton inserted Horsham and, quickly reduced them to 25-2. The hosts were undoubtedly in trouble, but skipper Michael Thornely and Sussex’s Will Beer asserted control. Between them, batting for a total of 250 balls, they hit 30 fours and 5 sixes in a superb 257 run third wicket partnership. Understandably, when both were out – Thornely for 150 and Beer for 100, in addition to his hundred for Sussex 2nd XI during the week – the momentum slowed and wickets fell in the pursuit

of more runs, Ben Hansford and Russell Talman each picking up three wickets. But, 340, by some distance the highest Premiership score of the day, was nevertheless a fairly daunting challenge, and in the interval the consensus was that Horsham would win if they could dismiss Heather and Rawat, but that proved to be far, far easier said than done. Horsham were very thin on bowling, frustratingly Sussex’s Tom Haines and George Garton (side strain) had been withdrawn from Horsham’s side to protect the county hit by injuries and England call ups, and Beer had been instructed not to bowl, leaving Horsham somewhat toothless on a typically immaculate Cricketfield Road wicket. Jonnny Whiting did make an early inroad but Heather batted on, and on, and on. After being glaringly missed when a catch looped up only for the ball to plop down between two transfixed nearby fielders looking at one another without attempting to catch it, Jack Dawling was eventually run out for 54 when attempting a too ambitious second run. But, the entry of Rawat meant that celebrations were short lived as he accelerated to his unbeaten 62 ball 100 with 14 fours and 2 sixes, taking 26 off one over, Heather’s 144 not out, following his similar score against Three Bridges on the first Saturday of the season, getting Middleton over the line with 13

balls to spare. Horsham had been obliged to bowl wicketkeeper Sam Bell, Joe Willis taking over the gloves efficiently. Middleton’s ground fielding had been ragged, but Horsham’s was regrettably worse, Michael Thornely telling the District Post: “We just didn’t do the basics well and make Middleton work hard enough – we fielded poorly and were at least one bowler short.” Naturally elated, Sean Heather said: “That was a belter of a wicket with two sides with moderate bowling attacks. Pre game we thought there were four players capable of getting a hundred and all four did! You just never think that its possible to chase down 340 – it’s the highest run chase that I’ve ever been involved with!” On Saturday Horsham visit mercurial Cuckfield, also with one win from three games. Meanwhile, at the foot of the table both Mayfield and Eastbourne are seeking an elusive first win. On Horsham’s John Dew Ground, Horsham 3rd XI restricted Littlehampton, Clapham and Patching to 224-8 and then knocked off the runs to win by 6 wickets with more than 8 overs unused. Whereas, at Southgate Park the 2nd XI lost by 39 runs after Crawley made 255-6, Joe Clark taking 2-23. Replying, Horsham were all out for 216, notwithstanding Harry Huddlestone and skipper Ed Clark’s fifties.
