Deselected Councillor will contest May election for Horsham MP DAVE SMITH News Reporter

Deputy Leader of Horsham Council Councillor Helena Croft (Roffey North) and Councillor Jim Rae (Holbrook East) have been deselected as Tory candidates for the forthcoming May elections. The decision was taken at a meeting of The Horsham Conservative Association on Saturday February 16 at which neither Councillor Croft, believed to be holidaying in France or Councillor Rae, immobile due to a recent knee operation, were present. Councillor Rae, who was notified of the decision by text message, has since resigned from the Conservative Party and will stand as an Independent. In a statement issued by Councillor Helena Croft she said, ‘over the past four years I have worked extremely hard on all political levels, in what has proved to be a very

difficult and challenging political environment. Some tough choices have had to be made due to difficult government planning legislations, which has required bigger and braver thinking to protect the long term future of Horsham town. I have remained steadfast and resolute in looking for solutions at all times. I am a great believer in being part of the solution by rolling your sleeves up and getting involved. I am clearly disappointed therefore not to have been selected by my local Conservative Association to continue working in my ward, in particular on behalf of the many wonderful people of Roffey North that I represent and have come to know personally. I do intend however to complete my term of office as their representative, fulfilling my responsibilities to them to the very best of my abilities’. Councillor Rae announced the decision of The Horsham Conservative Association and that of his resignation from the Conservative Party on social media last weekend. Councillor Rae told The District Post on Monday that a proposition

has been put to him by a consortium of Horsham District businessmen and women to stand in May’s General Election as an Independent under the banner of bringing back honesty and integrity to politics at the highest level, having given the matter due consideration Mr Rae has advised the group that he will be joining the contest for the parliamentary seat of Horsham and is looking forward to the challenge. Councillor Rae also stated that as he has resigned the Conservative whip he will now serve the residents of Roffey division on West Sussex County Council as an Independent. A spokesman for Horsham Conservative Association said: Mr Rae and Mrs Croft made various complaints to the National Party Board of the Conservative Party about process and procedure regarding local government candidate selection. These were fully investigated and none of their complaints were upheld. Following the Board’s decision and rejection of the complaints, the Horsham Conservative Association’s Executive Council met to

select candidates on February 14. Following a ballot of the members present, Mr Rae and Mrs Croft were not adopted as local government candidates by a wide margin. The Conservative Party runs a

The best ever Horsham Pancake Races were created on Tuesday by a heady mix of glorious sunshine, eleven zany Mascots led by Horsham FC’s Howie the Hornet and Crystal Palace’s Alice the Eagle, 30 teams of over excited gaudily dressed competitors and a fantastic Horsham crowd of spectators. The event was a great success and has established itself as a wonderful opening attraction to the Town’s annual event calendar. The event was organised as usual by the Rotary Club of Horsham, with support from main sponsor Ringway, who supplied the arena barriers and signs; Sainsbury’s, who supplied the pancakes, sugar and lemon juice; TV’s Dave Benson Phillips who energetically compered the event; and of course Horsham District Council’s Event Team. Eleven Giant Mascots competed with Howie and Alice in their hotly contested Egg & Spoon Races, with Barney the Bear just piping Alice in a rerun final to win the Ringway Mascot Cup. Horsham Rotary Club will donate £250 to the Children’s Trust for organising the mascot races and to help them with the fantastic work they do with children with severe disability.

£250. Horsham Rotary will also donate £100 to each of the other charities who received multiple nominations from the contestants… these are St Catherine’s Hospice, Set4Success, Dame Vera Lynn Trust, Horsham Community Responders and QE2 School. Horsham Rotary Club, part of the Global Rotary Organisation, raises money for Local and International Charities and organises and participates in many local events. It is probably the largest independent non-political, non-religious charity in the area and has donated over

£120,000 in the last 3 years. It’s ‘making a difference to Horsham‘ scheme has received over 300 requests for help in the last four years from local individuals and organisations and the Club has donated well over £50,000 in the fulfilment of these requests. The Club will now be organising The Easter Bunny Hunt, The Slot Cars at Piazza Italia and an Elephant Trail through Horsham during the summer holidays. Funding available for West Sussex voluntary organisations

V

oluntary and community organisations in West Sussex are being encouraged to apply for a share of £190,000. The application process for West Sussex County Council’s Prevention and Wellbeing Grants is now open. Grants of up to £5,000 are available. The funding aims to help innovative, communitybased activities for residents, which are designed to enable adults and older people to get out and about, make friends and see others. Christine Field, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “Voluntary and community organisations play a vital role in our local communities. They help reduce isolation and they can help to maintain an older person’s independence for longer. “The Prevention and Wellbeing Grants help these organisations to

support the social aspects of people’s lives. I would encourage any group who thinks they might be able to benefit from this funding to find out more.” The closing date for applications is Friday, April 24. Last year, awards ranged between £250 and £5,000, supporting a range of local voluntary and community activities including tea and chat groups, luncheon clubs, choirs, fitness and learning. The applications will be assessed by the County Local Committees. Organisations will be notified of decisions and receive payments in August 2015. The grants are not available for services or activities designed for children and people with learning disabilities. For more information and to find out how to request an application pack, please visit www.westsussex. gov.uk and search ‘Prevention and Wellbeing Grants’.

The Black Horse Inn raise hundreds for charity

Local charity Kangaroos, who run activities for children and young adults with learning disabilities, helped organise a special Burns Night supper at The Black Horse Inn, Nuthurst recently which raised £621.78. Pictured is Kangaroos Fundraising and Events Co-coordinator, Samantha Norgate who was presented the cheque by some of

the Black Horse staff. Customers enjoyed a wonderful evening, with great food, whiskey galore and a brilliant Burns recital, addressing the haggis, by local Scot, Fraser Leggate, who also kindly donated some beautiful pots of heather which were auctioned off at the end by pub quizmaster, Nick Cowley who did a splendid job.

The Charity is very grateful to everyone that donated raffle prizes, including The Black Horse and Tesco Burgess Hill and for everyone’s support and generosity. Horsham Labour Party launch petition to save Fire and Rescue Service Horsham Labour Party launched its petition to ‘Save Horsham’s Fire and Rescue Service’ from the county council’s plan to decimate the service, last Saturday when it spoke to hundreds of concerned shoppers in Horsham town centre. Most people were unaware that Horsham fire service had already been reduced by one third with a loss of one engine, and thought further cuts to an already depleted service would be both foolhardy and potentially dangerous. Labour’s campaign co-ordinator and candidate for Horsham Park in the district elections commenting on the reaction to Labour’s petition said: “Once we explained that we will only have two engines providing fire and rescue service across the whole of Horsham, shoppers were only too eager to sign the petition to reverse the cuts and to protect our vital services.” Labour county councillors are leading the campaign to reverse the cuts. Labour’s Michael Jones, speaking from County Hall, said: “I sincerely want to tell the cabinet member he’s making a terrible mistake by cutting the fire service budget. Fire representatives have

repeatedly warned this will impact on public safety.” Horsham Labour Party plan to continue collecting signatures throughout February and March to add to the hundreds they have already got and will ask their county councillors to present the petition to the ruling Tory group on their behalf. Collyer’s students remember the Holocaust The College of Richard Collyer Horsham Collyer’s students created a moving tribute to the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust during an all-day event on Tuesday, January 27 to support National Holocaust Memorial Day. Saoirse Freeman and Jacob Iles-Chew put together a display on the ground floor of the Learning Resource Centre at Collyer’s. Saoirse said: “What we wanted to achieve was a display which would represent the importance of individual experience. We are so often taught about the Holocaust in terms of statistics and we thought by providing individual stories we could help makes someone’s learning experience more personal, thus making it more likely that they would feel a sense of responsibility to prevent such a horrifying act from happening again.” The National Holocaust Day was started in the UK in 2001 and takes place every year on January 27. The date is significant as it was the day Auschwitz was liberated in 1945. Saoirse added: “We also chose to provide the stories of perpetrators in order to show ordinary people’s capacity for evil when prejudice is allowed to corrupt society.”

Cercle Francais still going strong after eight years

When, some ten years ago, West Sussex County Council stopped funding adult education courses that did not lead to a qualification, some learners decided to go solo. Independent but confident, they looked at alternatives. Rather than abandoning their studies, the Cercle Francais formed themselves into a self-help group and eight years later, they are still going strong. “We all had a great deal of motivation,” one of the group said. “Some of us, quite a few in fact, felt that we didn’t need an extra qualification; others didn’t want to study under pressure, and many of us wanted to be able to maintain and advance their knowledge of, and interest in, the language but at the same time be able to take advantage of holidays at low season and to respond to family concerns.

“We all love France and travel there often. It’s good to be able to do so and speak to people and understand them.” Another group member said: “I am still working and sometimes I have to work on class dates and can’t come – but I know I can come back in and still learn and maintain my knowledge.” After eight years of organising themselves, appointing tutors and finding premises, there is a strong feeling of mutual friendship and support. The atmosphere is relaxed, coffee at 11 o’clock plays a large part. The Cercle Francais meets on Thursday mornings for two hours during term time at Horsham Cricket Club. If you are interested in participating, join them for coffee at 11 o’clock on March 19.

Award winning photography on display at Horsham Museum & Art Gallery horsham museum

www.horshammuseum.org

A new display of award winning bird photographs has opened at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery, part of the amazing archive of Dr Nowell Peach (1914-2012) – one of this country’s leading bird photographers. Dr Peach’s family donated the archive to the Museum in 2013, and it has just finished being catalogued. The images on display form a tantalising cross-section of his historic natural history recording. Dr Peach was a member of the Zoological Photographic Club, whose membership was limited to just 28 people. The exhibition features a mixture of black and white and colour images, and includes striking shots of a barn owl with its prey, the majestic plumage of a kingfisher and the incongruous sight of a sardinian warbler feeding an interloping cuckoo chick. Dr Nowell Peach is remembered by those outside Horsham as a

For each ticket sold for the show, 50p was donated to CLIC Sargent as one of the students at the school, Ellie May, was helped by the charity’s team of CLIC Sargent Social Workers at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey during her treatment for cancer. Ellie May was diagnosed with Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in August 2012 at age four, and finished her treatment at the end of 2014. Her Mum Nikki spoke about her treatment: “She has had a tough time, suffering with the side effect of osteopenia which left her unable to walk for 14 months. She started classes at Sophie’s Studio in February this year to help her as she learned to walk again and regained mobility.” Led by principal Sophie McEwan, Sophie’s Studio has been open for around two years. Sophie said: “The show was incredible. The kids and ladies were amazing, as was the audience.”

CLIC Sargent fundraiser Dan Powell visited the school to accept a cheque on behalf of the charity and thank Sophie and the students for their support. Dan said: “A huge thank you to Sophie and all of the students at Sophie’s Studios. It is fantastic that you were not only able to

id you know you can adopt or foster, whether you are gay, straight, married or single? If you have a spare room and can provide a loving home to a local child, West Sussex County Council would like to hear from you. In particular, members of the local LGBT community are being encouraged to come and find out more about fostering and adoption at a special information evening being held during LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (2 to 8 March). Adoptive parents Hayley and Jane started fostering in West Sussex a couple of years ago. Hayley said: “Both of us love children, but we had never considered having our own - it all seemed far too complicated. We liked the thought of helping lots of children so we decided to look into fostering.” Hayley admitted to having doubts as to whether they would be right for fostering at the be-

ginning but was reassured by the support they received. “We originally went to an open day to have a chat, we weren’t sure of how it all worked and if we were able to,” she explained. “With that we put in our application and soon had our first visits. “It was all very nerve wracking - however everyone who came, including our social worker, made us feel very comfortable and relaxed, and gave us the growing confidence that we were going to be perfect for this job. We are also lucky to have a supportive network of family and friends.” Hayley and Jane were nervous when they received their first placement, a boy who they have since gone on to adopt. Hayley said: “Ultimately he was a gorgeous little boy that just needed to be loved and to be given the attention he so deserved. In fact we gelled with him so much, he completely slotted into our family way of life and so we decid-

ed to apply to adopt him. We were so happy when we were approved. “We would recommend fostering or adoption to anyone, no matter who you are, if you have caring patient nature and a spare room, there are children out there that need your love, and the change you can make to a child will be the most rewarding job you have ever done.” Foster carers Phil and Jason agree. Phil added: “There is a misconception that same-sex couples can’t do it or people fear they may have to go through more tests, but it isn’t the case. Fostering isn’t easy, but being able to help a child or young baby is incredibly rewarding.” West Sussex County Council’s Fostering and Adoption teams are holding an informal drop-in on Tuesday 3 March, from 7pm to 9pm, at Billingshurst Community and Conference Centre. The event will give prospective parents and carers – whatever their relationship status – the chance to hear more about the assessment process, and to talk to LGBT adopters and foster carers about their experiences. To find out more about fostering or adoption, please call 0330 222 7775 or visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering or www. westsussex.gov.uk/adoption.

Brighton Science Festival comes to Steyning Grammar School The Brighton Science Festival School Tour visited Year 8 pupils from Steyning Grammar School recently with their ‘Of All The Nerve’ workshop about the brain; how it thinks, learns, remembers, how it forgets, tires and gets distracted. Students were involved in a variety of activities to help them extend their knowledge on how the brain works. During one session they learned about the structure and function of a neuron. To do this each student became a neuron in a class simulation of a simple neural network and discovered that although the neuron’s task is simple, that the combined effect of 30 or so neurons can be dramatic. Students also performed a dramatisation of a reflex arc and they witnessed how illusions work by looking at some examples. Mr Scott Robinson, Steyning Grammar School’s learning leader KS3 science said: “It was a brilliant opportunity to learn about the nervous system in such an innovative way, our students really loved it.” Jessica Brown one of the students

said: “It was really great and they explained things in ways we could understand, I learnt loads.” Miss Cheryse Rahaman, Steyning Grammar School’s literacy leader said: “It’s important that literacy is embedded into all subjects across the curriculum and driven by teachers in order to develop writing skills and empower students. Extended writing opportunities, that link to ‘real life’ experiences are extremely powerful and enable students to reflect and focus on the ‘bigger picture’. “ Op p o r tuni ti e s such as inviting the Brighton Science Festival into the classroom enable students to be actively involved – teaming up science and literacy makes a great stimulus to generate ideas and help students to actively write and engage in the task.” Brighton Science Festival is now in its tenth year proving there’s a lot more to science than test tubes and prime numbers. This festival gives students the chance to experience this exciting approach to science learning with some hands-on demonstrations, engaging talks and live experiments all designed to unleash a curiosity for science.

Jill suffered a severe stroke in July 2013 and the immediate effects left her unable to use the entire right hand side of her body and left her incapable of speech except for one word… “No”. From the very moment she regained consciousness Jill’s drive to recover was monumental, and despite being told it was a very long and timely process, she awoke everyday with a focus that took her progress beyond anyone’s expectations. Within her first week of recovery Jill was able to put weight on her right leg, and six weeks later she walked out of the hospital aided only by a walking stick. On her return home from hospital, Jill continued to do all she could to recover, having to overcome not only the physical battle to regain her mobility but also the huge task of finding her voice and her self confidence again. Police & Crime Commissioner Student accommodation in Horsham funds specialist training in nik butler the fight against Female Genital Mutilation @loudmouthman

Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC), Katy Bourne, is funding training for 16 police officers who will become specialist investigators in Harmful Traditional Practices, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). The funding is another investment in the commissioner’s fight against sexual violence towards women and girls. Mrs Bourne said: “FGM causes pain, misery and trauma to its many victims around the world. It is a hugely complex area that needs to be fully recognised, understood and supported in order to help prevent more victims. “Encouraging people to report FGM can be even harder within some ethnic minority communities. That is why I am funding specialist training for 16 police officers in order to help bridge the relationship between police officers and ethnic communities in Sussex. “The specific three-day training programme will be delivered by the national charity Karma Nirvana, who are the leading experts in honour based abuse, in partnership with the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Commenting on the forthcoming training for Sussex Police officers, Jasvinder Sanghera, CEO of Karma Nirvana, said: “Our training will support police officers to effectively protect potential victims of honour based abuse. Karma Nirvana is very pleased to be able to deliver its specialist training in Sussex.” Mrs Bourne said: “I believe FGM is an issue which is still significantly under reported in Sussex and across the country. I would urge anyone who has been a victim of FGM or has any information about its practice here in Sussex to please contact Sussex Police as a matter of urgency. Please call 101 or email 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.” In January the PCC welcomed the opportunity to comment on the introduction of mandatory reporting for Female Genital Mutilation. It would appear the prospect of a few thousand extra students in Horsham may have a number of residents shaking their morning papers and exclaiming a loud harrumph. One or two have gone as far as to state a concern over the incursion of todays ‘yoofs’ and their tendency to vote for the Green Party. The statement itself is a paradox since in the same breath the outrage against the youth is defined in their apparent lack of interest in voting. Surely it cannot be both? Meanwhile in a interesting example of planning chutzpah it would appear that allowing students accommodation to be built would meet some of the targets defined by the inspectorate; news no doubt which would be met with further shaking of the papers in confused agreement. It should have everyone stopping to ask themselves if living accommodation for students is all it takes to answer the housing demand in the south then why are we not converting Collyers into further student accommodation thereby answering the future needs of housing for decades to come. What is overlooked in this opportunity is the prospect of exactly how an influx of the younger demographic will have

on the town. Doubtless more coffee shops will need to be opened to cope with the inevitable private study time influx; and the night life in Horsham might have to adapt. This would no doubt lead to further noise level complaints from residents who inexplicably purchased town centre property whilst expecting countryside silence. The additional spending power and footfall created by students and university employees will provide a considerable upswing economically and we must take care not to again leave all our eggs in one basket. If the agreements are settled upon and the plan proceeds, the benefit of maintaining a working educational campus over further housing should be obvious but should not be considered enough. The opportunity alone is exciting and certainly not one foreseen in any framework plan. Maybe the lesson learnt in the opportunity to gain a university campus location, along with the concomitant collection of youths, is that Horsham needs a plan which can adapt and integrate through the economic changes and will embrace those growing pains of change. The alternative is to grow ever more fixed against change. A parody of financial ‘fuddy duddy’ desperately fighting against the new and the different because things were better in their day.

The acquisition of G. Burley & Sons Limited by TC Landscapes, on which Rawlison Butler’s corporate transactions team advised, has won the ‘Deal of the Year for transactions under £10m’ at the Insider South East Dealmakers Awards 2015. Prior to the completion of the transaction, G. Burley & Sons was a 60-year old third generation family landscape and grounds maintenance business based in Dorking, Surrey. Leading South East law firm,

Thousands of new jobs, a redeveloped train station for Gatwick Airport and a new technology park are coming to the county. West Sussex County Council welcomed an announcement last month that an extra £35.8m will be invested by the government in parts of West Sussex and Surrey between 2016 and 2021. The grant will help improve the A2300 Burgess Hill link road, relieving congestion and unlocking up to 3,000 new homes and 5,000 jobs. It will also redevelop the railway station at Gatwick Airport, and cre-

ate a new Engineering and Digital Technology Park at the University of Chichester site in Bognor, training 500 students every year. West Sussex County Council leader, Louise Goldsmith, said: “This is extremely good news for West Sussex and brings substantial investment to three key projects in the county. West Sussex County Council has identified the economy as one of our priority areas, and our aims are to see a growth in jobs, enterprise, skills and better infrastructure. “These additional projects being

funded under the Growth Deal tie in exactly with our key aims.” The Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership secured the money after agreeing an expansion to its existing Growth Deal with the government. The boost is an extension of the £202.4m funding agreed between Coast to Capital and the government last year. It is estimated the deal will create up to 21,000 new jobs, 9,000 new homes, and could generate £390m in public and private investment across both counties.

Farlington pupils find old music ‘cool’

THEATRE PROGRAMME

AN AUDIENCE WITH HELEN LEDERER Saturday 21 February 7.30pm

A chance to meet actress and writer Helen Lederer as she shares a tongue in cheek journey around her brush with show business, literati and reality TV as well as an exclusive reveal of her debut novel ‘Losing It’. Helen is probably best known for her role as dippy Catriona in Absolutely Fabulous in which she appeared alongside Jennifer Saunders in all six series.

Farlington School Horsham “I never knew that old music was so cool,” enthused a Prep 3 pupil who had witnessed the baroque ensemble, Bergamasca, demonstrating and playing an amazing array of baroque instruments at Farlington School on Monday, February 2. From the long-necked theorbo to the extraordinary curtal, from dulcian to baroque bagpipes - a particular favourite - and encompassing every possible size of recorder and viol on the way, Katriina Boosey, Frances Eustace and Lynda Sayce incorporated them all into a fasci-

nating historical trawl through the baroque era. A mesmerised audience of Farlington Prep pupils, along with visiting recorder enthusiasts from St Mary’s and Greenways Schools, was transported back in time to the courts of Charles II and Louis XIV with virtuoso performances of baroque music along with detailed explanations of musical life in Stuart times, and how each instrument was made. The pupils were full of questions and were thrilled to experience such a broad repertoire of music on such a variety of instruments. As one Prep 5 pupil said: “I was just expecting them to play one instrument each, but they each

played lots of different ones amazingly well.” In the evening, Bergamasca performed to an equally mesmerised audience, this time composed of senior pupils, parents and visitors, with a delightfully varied programme of baroque music from different European countries. From the quintessentially English Lord Zouche’s Maske through elegant French dances and an extraordinary piece featuring the colourful curtal - a somewhat raucous early bassoon, the concert ended with a Vivaldi trio in which the players’ virtuosity was quite simply breathtaking. And yes, old music can be seriously cool.

Enjoy ‘Yet Another Evening with Rick Wakeman’ at the Hawth

A fellow of the Royal College of Music, professor of the London College of Music, former Yes keyboard player, Watchdog presenter and renowned Grumpy Old Man, Rick Wakeman has led a rich and varied life. In his one-man solo show, he recounts hilarious and unlikely anecdotes from a career that has in-

cluded musical collaborations with David Bowie, Cat Stevens and Elton John, as well as worldwide tours with Yes and his own band the English Rock Ensemble, punctuated by displays of dazzling virtuosity on the piano. Classically trained pianist Rick was a much-sought-after session musician in the late sixties and early seventies when he played on more than 2,000 records by a wide variety of artists which included such diverse talents as Cilla Black, John Williams, Marc Bolan and Black Sabbath. In the early seventies, he found fame in his own right as a member of first Strawbs and then Yes (a band he has been in and out off quite a few times since). As a solo artist and with Yes, he has sold more than 50,000,000 albums. He has written a number of film scores and regularly takes part in The News Quiz, Just A Minute and It’s Your Round on BBC Radio 4. He has also carved out quite a television career, featuring in every single episode in the Grumpy Old Men series, as well as making just under 100 appearances on Countdown and accepting numerous invites to guest on Never

Mind The Buzzcocks. He is now in his fifth year as a regular presenter on Watchdog. Rick still finds time each year to perform concerts around the world, which can range from his extremely popular one-man show to extravaganzas that include symphony orchestras and choirs. In 2014, he toured the UK with his multi-million selling work, Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, which included two sell-out performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall and was voted Best Live Event at the Progressive Music Awards 2014. In August 2013, for the first time in his long and varied career, he performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with a run of 12 solo shows which were a sell-out success, winning rave reviews and quickly becoming a ‘must-see’ event of the festival. As he takes the show on the road one more time, come along and find out why life is rarely dull for Rick or those around him. At the Hawth, Crawley on Thursday, March 19 at 7.30pm. Welcome to the first edition of our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA, talks about the benefits of neutering your pets as we approach World Spay Day. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email me at dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. I hope you enjoy the read.

The alternative to kennels in Sussex Wagging Tails offers dog owners in the area a home based alternative to kennels. The RH postcode branch, run by Sue Day and her cockapoos Maisie and Bess, gives dogs their very own holiday as the only guest in the home of a specially selected dog carer. All Wagging Tails dog carers are experienced current or former dog owners, are at home during the day, have been vetted and licenced by their local council and are fully insured. A dog lover all her life, Sue places focus on the welfare and individual needs of each dog. She explains: “Owners are often, and quite rightly, very worried about leaving their dogs when they go away and many don’t like the idea of kennels. Our aim is to make this as stress free as possible by finding out as much information as we can about each dog we

Tuesday 24th February marks World Spay Day and we’re encouraging all pet owners in Horsham to get their pets neutered. Neutering know as spaying for girls and the snip for boys is a very simple operation. Spaying of females involves the removal of the uterus and ovaries. Neutering of males is done by removing the testicles. Pets are dropped off at the vets, he or she will be given an anaesthetic and can be picked up again later that same day. Once they are back at home, they will need to recover for a short time but they will soon be fit and well again. Cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets and other animals can benefit from neutering. Lift the lip on dental hygiene Dental disease is the most common clinical condition occurring in adult dogs and cats, and is entirely preventable. By three years of age, most dogs and cats have evidence of dental disease. Unfortunately, other than bad breath, there are few signs of the disease process visible to the owner, and professional dental treatment often comes too late to prevent extensive disease or to save teeth. Consequently dental disease is usually under-treated, and may cause many problems and can be associated with damage to internal organs in some patients as they age. Dental disease begins when bacteria in the mouth form plaque that sticks to the surface of the teeth.

Subsequently, minerals in the saliva harden the plaque into tartar, which is firmly attached to the teeth. Tartar above the gum line is obvious to many owners, but is not of itself the cause of disease. The real problem develops as plaque and tartar spread under the gum line. Bacteria in this ‘sub-gingival’ plaque set in motion a cycle of damage to the supporting tissues around the tooth, eventually leading to loss of the tooth. The initial changes cause white blood cells to move into the the space between the gum or bone and the tooth. These white blood cells destroy the bacterial invaders, but chemicals released by the white blood cells cause damage to the supporting tissues of the tooth. Instead of helping the problem, the patient’s own protective system actually worsens the disease when there is severe buildup of plaque and tartar. Dental disease includes inflammation of the gums and periodontitis (loss of bone and soft tissue around the teeth). There is a wide range in the appearance and severity of periodontal disease, which often cannot be properly evaluated or treated without general anesthesia for veterinary patients. Effects within the mouth include damage to gum tissue and bone around the

teeth, fractures of the jaw following weakening of the jaw bone, and bone infection. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and are carried around the body and studies in dogs have shown that dental disease is associated with microscopic changes in the heart, liver, and kidneys. Treatment of dental disease is multi-faceted. If your pet has tartar or large amounts of plaque present, professional dental cleaning is required, including an oral examination, scaling and polishing. Dental radiographs may be required to correctly diagnose and assist in treatment of patients with extensive disease. The patient’s overall health, the cost of specific treatments, and the owner’s willingness to provide home dental care should be taken into account prior to any treatment. Home oral care can improve the dental health of the patient; decrease the progression of the disease and the frequency of professional dental cleaning. Implementing home oral care at a young age can help the pet accept life-long oral care. When properly cared for, teeth can remain in a healthy condition, and the risk of associated health complications can be reduced. So lift the lip and check your pet’s teeth.

Arun Veterinary Group give ‘Poppy’ a second chance In Azerbaijan stray Dogs are routinely culled, locals kill dogs and collect rewards from officials by presenting the tails of their victims. The ‘Baku Animal Rescue Shelter’ in Azerbaijan tries to help and rescue sick or injured animals by driving them to Iran for Veterinary treatment. It was on one of these journeys that Lorna Buckley from West Sussex, found Poppy laying on the side of the road with head and pelvic injuries

and a docked tail. The Vet in Iran treated her injuries and she slowly recovered, but was unable to walk properly. Lorna found her a adoptive family in England, and upon arrival she was brought to see Vet Matthew Gittings at Arun Veterinary Group for Xrays, which showed that the scar tissue had fused her leg to her pelvis, and there was no option but to amputate her leg. Following that her new home fell

through, leaving Poppys future uncertain. Upon hearing her plight, Abi Hearn a Nursing Assistant at Arun Vets offered to foster Poppy until she found a new home. Since the amputation Poppy – the little ‘pavement special’ has recovered amazingly and is getting around better than ever, she has so much personality and is very loving. We would like to thank everyone who has helped to get poppy back on to her (3) feet. ‘Happy Breed Foundation’ who funded Poppys surgery and ‘WADARS’ (Worthing and District Animal Rescue Service) who are helping to find her Forever home. Visit www.arunvetgroup.co.uk for more information.

AGATE LANE PRICE GUIDE OF £250,000 TO £270,000 This three bedroom family home benefits from an outlook over playing fields to the front and is conveniently situated for quick access to Horsham town centre and the local schools. The property offers a bright entrance hall which leads to the sitting room at the front of the house. This is a bright, welcoming space that benefits hugely from the southerly front aspect which allows plenty of sun to fill the room. There is a central fire place which is great for the winter and from here an arch takes you to the dining room located at the back of the house. This easily fits a dining table for six people and there is a convenient serving hatch between here and the kitchen which is adjacent. There is the potential to knock these two rooms together (STBR) creating a larger kitchen/ diner if required. The first floor provides three generous bedrooms with the master being a very good size and benefitting from a ‘flying freehold’ over the pedestrian passage way below. This could allow enough space for an en-suite if required as the bathroom is immediately adjacent. The second bedroom is also a good size double with the third making a great office or box room for babies. Call Mayhew Estates on 01403 276777 to book your viewing now.

Horsham break Edwardians Joggers Boniface loves the Valentine’s Run hearts on Valentine’s Day John Burroughs helped Horsham to victory Photo by Nick Evans

hockey

Neil Boniface battled the mud to win the Valentine’s Race

Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Saturday February 14 - South League Premier Division 2 London Edwardians 2 - 4 Horsham Men’s 1st XI Showing great spirit Horsham returned to winning ways, maintaining their challenge for promotion despite early reverses. The team were determined to avenge last season’s defeat at Edwardians but trailed 1-0 at the break and went two adrift soon after the re-start, the opposition benefiting from their only real attacks. Yet, having produced more scoring opportunities, Horsham were unfazed after extracting top saves or cobbled together clearances from the hosts. And, sure enough, within a few minutes further Horsham pressure resulted in John Burroughs obtaining a short corner - promptly slotted home with a strong Cirdec Atkinson flick. Despite concerted effort from the hosts they could not contain Jack Dean’s run into their circle to accept a pinpoint long range pass from ace defender Freddie Campbell, stranding the keeper and splintering the backboard. Now on level terms Horsham, refusing to share the points, kept pressing and were rewarded with two more short corners earned by the ever competitive John Burroughs, Matt Hough obliging both

times, taking him up to a seasonal tally of 14 goals to seal the 4-2 victory. Team Manager Al Campbell said: “This was a great performance and once Jack had equalised a Horsham victory seemed inevitable. We were playing better hockey and deserved to win. Our determination and composure

marked this as our best performance of the campaign, auguring well in the run in.” Horsham remain fourth, two points behind Trojans but with a game in hand and tomorrow – Saturday February 21 – entertain Tulse Hill & Dulwich (fifth), and whom they beat 4-1 away in November.

Defeat leaves Horsham bottom Saturday February 14 – Women’s Conference East Horsham Ladies 1st XI 1 - 3 Sevenoaks Ladies Hockey Martin Read – Sports Reporter Horsham were within reach of second in the league Sevenoaks for three quarters of the game and, after going one down just before the break equalised through Fran Crossley early in the second half, only to concede two further goals to lose 3 -1. Unexpectedly other struggling teams won resulting in Horsham slipping to the bottom of the table, albeit within reach of both Bedford and Ipswich. Fran told the District Post: “We’ve got five games to go and

need to win three of those to avoid the play offs. We’ve made life difficult for ourselves and taking points from East Grinstead is not to be expected but we’re remaining positive and are training hard. We’re winning short corners and need to be more clinical to convert those opportunities. Looking ahead we could beat Wimbledon and although we have found Harleston Magpies a handful we’ve beaten St Albans and Chelmsford before now. We know what we’ve got to do and just need to do it!” Just when Horsham might be hoping for an easier game the clash with runaway leaders East Grinstead, unbeaten and with ten wins from thirteen starts, is at their ground tomorrow (Saturday February 21).

Horsham Joggers were the hosts for the annual Valentine’s Run which took place in Southwater last Sunday (15th February 15). This was the third race of the West Sussex Fun Run League series which sees 18 clubs from West Sussex competing in 18 races throughout the year. This year the multi terrain Valentine’s course was extended to 5.25 miles, although with plenty of muddy bridleways to negotiate the tough terrain left many competitors feeling that they had run much further! The new course encouraged a record number of entries with 446 runners completing this year’s race. First place went to Horsham Joggers’ Neil Boniface who despite the tough course showed that he was on form with a comfortable win in 32:24. Second place went to Worthing Striders’ James Espie with a

time of 32:43 and Horsham Joggers rising star Dean Heneghan took third place in 33:00. First in the women’s race was Lewes AC’s Jocelyn Lowden with 37:08, Maria Barrow also from Lewes AC took second in 39:39, third went to Worthing Harriers’ Deborah Vent - 41:51. Despite many club members helping to organise the race, Horsham Joggers were well represented with twenty Joggers featuring in the results: Neil Boniface 32:24 (1st), Dean Heneghan 33:00 (3rd), Rob Crocker 37:28, Matt Furber 39:29, Harry Wilcox 40:22, Colin Ashby 41:22, Matthew Payne 45:04, Vic Dooley 45:48, Emma Catlow 50:34, Saul Brignell 50:39, Ian Wilcox 53:54, Helen Woods 54:47, Greg Collins 55:13, Ian Nicholson 56:09, Charey Crocker 60:03, Amanda Reilly 1:03:11, Sarah Bower 1:03:37, Claire Bird 1:10:18, Claire Burrows 1:18:38, Claire Miller 1:19:14.

Local referee looking to set up new football league Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor A local referee and former South London Sunday League officer is looking to set up a local adult football league with the emphasis on discipline and good behaviour. John Wilkins’s aim is to have the Horsham District (Adult) Football League up and running for the 2015/16 season and therefore he invites teams who have the desire to play football without the ill-

discipline that can occur in many matches to apply. John states that he has a disciplinary system unique to football which will keep things under close control and will root out teams and individuals who are guilty of misconduct. He also states he is looking to make the league fees competitively priced against other similar leagues. Any teams interested should contact John on 07800748633 for an application form.

East Grinstead turn league form on its head against Lions Saturday February 14 - Sussex Bowl Semi-Final East Grinstead 3’s 14 – 8 Horsham Rugby Club Lions Rugby James Layzell – Horsham RUFC The Lions took on East Grinstead Thirds in a Sussex Bowl Semi Final only to lose by a six point margin in what was a tightly contested match with both sides attempting to run the ball as much as they could. Two converted tries from East Grinstead proved the difference but Horsham pushed hard until the last play of the game only too come up short. Horsham went in this match having just thrashed East Grinstead 61-0 in the league but this time the opposition had reinforced their side with players from their senior squad. East Grinstead came out of the blocks with powerful runners pushing Horsham back within the first 20 minutes with the first try coming from their left winger after a big break from their fly-half and some good phase play. Lions replied with a number of powerful bursts by the forwards and inside centre Richard Henderson, who proved to be a powerful runner with ball in hand throughout the match for the Lions. Through these plays Horsham pushed East Grinstead back to their try line with Joey Walker punching

through for the Lions only try of the game to bring the score to 7-5. From the start of the second half Horsham started quickly with the same pattern of play as the first half that produced the try but it took about 25 minutes for the first score to happen with East Grinstead conceding a penalty in front of goal. The Lions elected to kick with James Layzell stepping up to slot the kick for the Lions to take the lead for the first time in the match. After this East Grinstead came back with another set of powerful runs from their big ball carriers and smart kicking from their fly half pushed the Lions back into their 22 and forcing them to knock the ball on. From the ensuing scrum East Grinstead again made good use of power runners, and through these forced the Lions to infringe in a ruck with the Lions blindside flanker being sent to the bin for ten minutes. Having a man down proved to be a big difference with East Grinstead making use of the space with their fly half making a break and scoring the winning try under the post. After this Horsham dug in deep and pushed East Grinstead back with another set of powerful runs and good use of patterns. But it was in vain with the last act of the game being a knock on near the East Grinstead try line. Overall the Lions produced a powerful display which most teams would not have been able to live with.

orsham YMCA recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since the start of November with a comfortable 7-0 victory over bottom of the table Selsey in Division 1 action on Saturday. Striker Nick Sullivan bagged a first half brace either side of a rare Adam O’Carroll strike, before further efforts after the break from Anthony Hibbert, Dave Brown, Dan Sullivan and Josh Brown completed the rout against a Blues side still without a win in the league.

YM coach Lyndon Buckwell commented: “We did what we had to do really. It wasn’t ideal conditions, but the players worked hard and created some good chances. Selsey are not the greatest side but they had a bit of spirit for a young team and they worked hard and made it difficult for us. “I think we’ve got to be happy with the result. Once you know that the game is won, it is hard to carry on going, and so to score a couple of goals in the last few minute’s just shows that we never gave up. “Because Selsey are a young side, we said to the players to have a good start with a high tempo and put them under a lot of pressure. And that’s what we did and to get those goals early on gave us the points really. It was then a case of going out and winning the second half. The

fixtures coming up look good for us. I’m not saying that they’re going to be easy, but we avoid the top three for little while and we’ve got one or two new signings that will be available soon, so we’ll not only have a good starting eleven, but good options on the bench. If we can have everyone fit and available, we should still be up there in the top six. We should be looking to beat any team in this league on our day. We don’t fear anyone.” Goal scorers: N. Sullivan (1, 16) O’Carroll (5) Hibbert (55) D. Brown (67) D. Sullivan (86) J. Brown (90+2). YM Team: Lockwood, Carden, Crane, O’Carroll (Doherty 60), Evans, Hibbert (Dugdale 65), Gedling, D. Sullivan, J. Brown, D. Brown, N. Sullivan (M. Smith 68) Unused Subs: Fox, Gathern.

Horsham will again feel hard done by at the hands of an official after what looked a clear penalty in the last minutes was refused by referee Sam Allison following a blatant foul on substitute Oli Lockyer. Not on the plane to Guernsey were the injured trio of Joe Obersteller, Lewis Hamilton and Tom Gilbert while Tom Hughes remained suspended and Saul Otobo was unavailable all of which helped Jacob Peake to make his debut. A good number of supporters had made the journey and were both noisy and colourful in their support. However the team could not have got off to worse start after conceding a goal within 20 seconds of the kick off. To make it even worse Horsham took the kick off but lost the ball immediately from where a long ball found striker Marc McGrath who superbly passed Gregg Berry to smash his shot passed Williams in the Horsham goal. After the disastrous start the game continued as a fairly even contest with both sides trading ef-

forts on goal, Tony Nwachukwu and Ehis Izokun had chances for Horsham and the dangerous Ross Allen went close for the Islanders. But despite both team’s attempts and the encouragement from the buoyant travelling support the single goal in the opening seconds was all that separated the sides at the break. Right from the start of the second half the Hornets attacked their hosts and Izokun headed Nwachukwu’s cross wide in the first minute, however the Hornets were hit again by a quick goal after Allen lost Jack Page and crossed for Dave Rihoy to tap home for 2-0. Manager Storey sent on Bailo Camara for Peake and the substitution nearly paid off when Camara produced some good play to set up Tom Vickers whose shot was saved by home keeper Chris Tardif. Nwachukwu was the next to benefit from Camara’s lively intervention being found superbly by the substitute only for his shot to be blocked. Horsham were now having the better of the play but Guernsey held firm at the back right up until the eighty-forth minute when Nwachukwu was fouled by keeper Tardif resulting in a penalty. Nwachukwu picked himself up and slotted his ninth penalty of the season past the offending Guernsey keeper to give the Hornets hope of grabbing a point. McCreadie headed another good

Nwachukwu cross over the bar but then the opportunity to grab that point was denied when somehow the referee failed to see defender Liam Mahon’s tug back on Oli Lockyer and the opportunity of flying back with a point disappeared. After seeing the incident on Guernsey TV referee Sam Allison has admitted his error however that does little to ease the pain of another defeat for the Hornets who have now taken one point from the last five games to remain bottom. The defeat has proved to be not as damaging as it could have been as all six of the clubs at the bottom of the Ryman League South lost. So Horsham have not lost any ground on teams around them, although the missed opportunity to narrow the gap on those outside the bottom three has to be recognised. Mid table local rivals Three Bridges visit Gorings Mead tomorrow (Saturday February 21) in what is a very winnable game. But in the situation Horsham are in and with time and matches running out, it is also a must win game. Goalscorers: Guernsey: McGrath (1) Rihoy (49) Horsham: Nwachukwu (pen 84). Horsham Team: Williams, Berry, Hope, Page, Byrne, Peake (Camara 52) Welch, Vickers, McCreadie, Nwachukwu, Izokun (Lockyer 59). Unused subs: Zawadski, Branford, Akande.
