Grieving relatives of A24 stabbing victim Don Lock have publicly thanked people who tried to save his life. And they have spoken of the enduring agony the legal process of bringing whoever killed him to justice will cause them as they try to cope with their loss. Popular Mr Lock, 79, a retired solicitor and avid cyclist who had fought cancer, died at the scene after an incident that happened after his car was in collision with another car at Findon on Thursday evening last week at about 8.40 pm. A man has since appeared in Crown Court charged with his murder. Mr Lock died despite the efforts of passers-by and 999 workers to save him. His son Andrew, supported by family at Washington, West Sussex, said: “To the people who tried their best to help dad at the scene, we are deeply grateful for what they did and know they did all that they could. We can only say thank you, and they are very much appreciated.” “It is now a very difficult time for all of us and we will be working hard to support mum through the unenvi-

able process that will follow as a result of the circumstances, which will only the delay the chance for us to move on and just remember dad for the fantastic person he was. Full of wisdom, full of wit, always calm, always supportive, the perfect role and full of charm. Don; dad, grandad and great-grandad. The best.”

Popular Mr Lock, 79, a retired solicitor and avid cyclist who had fought cancer, died at the scene after an incident that happened after his car was in collision with another Andrew also said in Saturday’s statement that his father had been given the all-clear after treatment for prostate cancer. He added: “ The whole family are incredibly overwhelmed with all the messages of sympathy and support, the sheer volume of tributes on the various

social media sites and people even changing their profile pictures to a picture of dad. “ Matthew Daley, 34, of St Elmo Road, Worthing, was charged on Sunday with murder and possession of a knife in a public place. He was remanded in custody and appeared at Crawley Magistrates Court on Monday, then briefly via videolink at Hove Crown Court on Tuesday, where he was remanded in custody to make a personal appearance on September 25. Media reporting on the details of the circumstances of the attack is now restricted by law because of the current court proceedings, a routine legal procedure. Floral tributes were laid near the scene where Mr Lock died. Soon after news of Mr Lock’s death the family issued their first statement through Sussex Police. It said: "Don has been a keen cyclist since the age of 12 and had been an active member of the Worthing Excelsior Cycling Club since 1960. “He was not your typical great grandfather and was still cycling up to 150 miles per week. He still holds the club record for the 24-hour time trial having remained unbeaten for 44 years. "He was full of energy having recently been given the all clear from cancer. Not only was he passionate continued on page 2

He and Maureen had just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. "Don leaves son Andy, daughter Sandra, four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren with the sixth great grandchild due later this year. Don had lived in Worthing for 55 years and was a popular member of the community. "He was hugely loved by his family and friends and could often be called upon for his cycling or travel advice. Words cannot describe how much he will be missed." Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club , of whom Mr Lock was a supporter, put out a message saying: “The thoughts of all at Brighton and Hove Albion are with the family and friends of Don Lock” Many people who did not even know Mr Lock or his family put messages of sympathy on social media, including some football supporters. Daz Berkshire said on Facebook: “Very sad news. RIP fellow Albion fan. Thoughts are with his family.” Simon Warner said: “May your loved ones take some comfort from knowing you were so admired and special to so many.” Cycling enthusiasts were shocked by the killing. Chairman of the Horsham Cycling club John Chaplin told the Post: “I have sent our club's condolences to Worthing Excelsior.”

Tragic death of local vicar is Fund raiser named profound blow, says bishop as new president of District Rotary Club

Rev Christopher Loveless

A bishop described the death of a vicar found hanged as a profound blow to villagers. Police found the body of Rev Christopher Loveless, of St Margaret's Church in Warnham in woodland near his home on the evening of Friday last week. An inquiry has begun for a report to West Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield for an inquest into the circumstances of the death of popular Mr Loveless. One of the possibilities the investigation will explore will be that Mr Loveless took

his own life. No-one else is believed to have been involved in the incident and a Sussex police spokesman said: “We were contacted shortly before 8pm on Friday 17 July with a report that a 53-year-old man had gone missing from his home in Warnham. “Officers searched the area and found the body of a man at about 9pm at the woods near Tilletts Lane in Warnham. “The death is not being treated as suspicious. The coroner's officer has been informed.” A statement from the family on the Diocese website said that Mr Loveless, who had been struggling with stress, died suddenly on Friday night. The Bishop of Horsham Rt Rev Mark Sowerby said the whole Diocese would be praying for his wife Natalie and their two children as well as for Mr Loveless. An Oxford graduate who studied at Lincoln Theological College, Mr Loveless was ordained as a priest in 1992 after serving his title as Curate of Willingdon. Between 1995 and 1999 he was Curate of Goring by Sea from where he went to be Vicar of Warnham, where he has served for 15 years. Bishop Mark said in a tribute:

"Christopher Loveless was a talented and experienced parish priest who was much loved in the parish of Warnham, where has had served since 1999.

An Oxford graduate who studied in Lincoln Theological College, Mr Loveless was ordained as a priest in 1992 after serving his title as Curate of Wellington His sudden death comes as a profound blow not only to his family and the people of Warnham, but to the many friends who loved and admired him and to all who benefited from his gentle pastoral care. May he rest in God’s peace."

A woman who has raised more than £1.3 million to help adults with learning difficulties is the new president of Storrington and Pulborough District Rotary Club. Pippa Davies began her career as an officer in the Metropolitan Police Force. She then re-trained and specialised in educational and personal development for children and adults who have learning disabilities. For the past 15 years Pippa has managed West Sussex Learning Links, a countywide charity that supports more than 140 adults who have learning disabilities to access mainstream learning and leisure opportunities with support from volunteer 'buddies'. One of Pippa's main roles is fundraising and during the past 15 years she has raised just more than £1.3 million; this will have supported all the running costs of the Charity until June 201.

Her family moved to Partridge Green from West Wickham, Kent, in 1997 and more recently she and her husband moved to Thakeham. They have a son who is a corporate lawyer in London. In her spare time she also enjoys getting out and about with both her husband and son, gardening, reading and walking the family's two dogs. Pippa joined the club in January 2011 and says "Rotary is an important part of my life, giving both enjoyment and the opportunity to support worthwhile projects in both my local community and internationally. The friendships and fellowship of other members has been a very big additional bonus and I am very much looking forward to the year ahead as President of such a great Club". Goodbye to historic old school as time capsule buried

The children help fill the hole

Mr Simmons buries the capsule

Pupils helped preserve a slice of an old school’s history when it closed after more than 160 years. The youngsters helped bury a time capsule marking developments at Itchingfield Primary School in Barns Green. Parents and teachers attended the celebration of the closing of the Victorian school, which was the last remaining one in West Sussex split over two sites. More than 3,500 pupils passed through its gates under the leadership of eight head teachers. It is being replaced by a brand new school built by Berkeley Homes, whose development The Ashmiles has created 69 new homes in the village. The new school premises will officially open in September. A pupil at the school has already been chosen to have the honour of excavating and opening it in 50 years, in 2065. The privilege of lowering the capsule into the ground was given to Mr Simon Simmons, Headmaster of

Itchingfield Primary School, helped by pupils. It contained a video of the children entering the new school building for the first time, a tile and brick from the old building, a current school jumper, a copy of The History of Itchingfield School book and selection of current school work. The school’s Parent Teacher Association hosted an afternoon of fun and entertainment for the whole school, including the cutting of a special celebratory ‘Time Capsule’ style cake complete with decorative bunting. Mr Simmons said: “Itchingfield Primary School holds a special place in the memories of pupils, parents and staff both past and present. It was important to celebrate its closing and our move to a brand new school in a memorable fun way. The burial of the Time Capsule seemed the most fitting way to capture the transition. It will house many memories and remind those in the future of the special history this iconic school has.”

Billingshurst’s big day sets big fund-raising target Horsham voters asked to check their details Villagers at Billingshurst have a big fund-raising target to help cancer patients at Saturday’s Six Bells Fun Day. Organisers hope the crowds can increase the amount raised from last year’s £7,000 to £10,000 this year for the Midhurst Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Service. The entertainment lasts from 11am until midnight at The Six Bells pub in the village’s High Street.

Main organizer Vicky CooperJohnstone says she is confident is that Billingshurst can do it. Vicky said: “I have seen this village come together in the most magnificent ways to raise money for this charity, businesses giving us support to help with the cost of putting on the day, Neil Hudson is Braving the Shave and The Fat Cow Ice Cream relocating for the day and coming to the pub and incredibly donating 100% of their profit.”

Residents of Horsham district are being asked to check their voting details. They will soon be receiving a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct, as part of Horsham’s annual voter registration canvass. The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. With Police and Crime Commissioner elections taking place across Sussex in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the elections take place they will easily be able to take part. Tom Crowley, Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer at Horsham District Council said: “Anyone who wants to vote must be registered. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year, simply check the form when it arrives and respond to it as promptly as possible.” “If you’re not currently registered, we’ll send you information explaining how to do this or you can just go online to apply to register at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote .” It’s particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form and checks whether they are registered.” Any residents who have any questions can contact the Elections team at Horsham District Council on 01403 215126 or email elections@ horsham.gov.uk Contact: press@horsham.gov.uk.

Dad rides through the pain for daughter Date set for new H and M after shocking Type 1 diabetes diagnosis Horsham store opening Dad Duncan Gray will ride through the pain barrier in a proud tribute to his daughter. The 40-year-old from Broadbridge Heath can only get some relief from rheumatoid arthritis by having twice-yearly infusions in hospital so every turn of the pedal is a challenge. But engineer Duncan was so proud of the way his daughter Olivia, 12, handled her shock diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, which requires regular injections of insulin, that he is riding 300 miles in 24-hours for the Diabetes UK charity. It is the third time he has defied his condition to do a charity ride; previous rides raised £3,500 for the British Heart Foundation in memory of his father Neil. This time he will ride from Newcastle to London on August 22. Duncan’s wife Tracy said: “ He has had to time it around having an infusion. His last one was in June and he had to make sure he was fit and healthy for the time of the ride. He looked at doing London to Paris but the timing wise it would not have worked. So he went for a longer ride.

Olivia, 11 at the time, had to cope with her diagnosis just before she was starting at Tanbridge School in Horsham but her parents are impressed by the way she has dealt with it “He is relatively pain free but he is still in pain. His specialist said ‘Oh my God. I can’t believe you are doing this’. “But he is a very determined man. He is doing the ride to raise awareness of diabetes and help provide much needed funds for research.” Olivia, 11, had to cope with her diagnosis just before she was starting at Tanbridge School in Horsham but her parents are impressed by the way she has dealt with it. Her condition is thought to have been caused by a fault in her immune system. Tracy, 40, said: “She is OK. She’s pretty amazing. Olivia takes it all in her stride. She’s pretty laid back about it. “It doesn’t stop her doing anything. “Before she was diagnosed she fell very ill and her blood test result at East Surrey Hospital was so high it was unrecordable, although she had been healthy and has always had a good diet. This was a life changing event for her and we are extremely proud of how she has coped.” http://www.justgiving.com/duncan-gray7

Fashion shoppers will have a bigname new store in Horsham next year. H and M, which claims to be one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, says it plans to open in the town in the spring of 2016, in the same year that the firm celebrates 40 years of trading in the UK. The store’s arrival is another boost for the town centre after the opening in June this year of the new £11 million John Lewis and Waitrose stores, previously featured in the Post. H and M will add to the ranks of the clothes shops serving the town. The company says it offers high fashion and good quality basics at affordable prices in a sustainable way. H and M says its store will offer a wide selection of fashion and quality clothing for women, men and chil-

dren. The company says more information will be provided at a later date before the opening. A spokesperson for H and M said: “We are delighted to be opening in Horsham and believe this is an exciting opportunity to expand our brand. The new store will offer affordable fashion and quality clothing in a sustainable way with something for everyone, no matter your age, budget or personal style.” H and M has been trading in the UK since 1976. Today there are 250 stores in the UK and Ireland. Through its stores and online, H and M offers a broad product range including the latest trends and inspiration for customers to create a personal style. The company says more information on the new store will be provided at a later date before the opening.

Champ team retains sports trophy 10 Minute Shake Up for

children campaign starts

Tommy Strange (right) in basketball The 2014 victors in the Forest School sports day retained their trophy by a clear margin this year. Branson Community team finished 74 points ahead of nearest rivals Hawking after contests at the Horsham-based school involving about 800 students. Pupils from years seven to 10

Charlie Maquire runs for Branson team

competed in a range of events to gain points for their community. Activities included volleyball, table tennis, football, cricket, softball, field handball, basketball and field athletics. After the first two sessions all four teams, Branson, Dyson, Hawking and Marconi, were in a position

to win. The afternoon track athletics finale saw Branson asserting their supremacy, winning numerous events across all year groups. School Sports Captain Joe Humphries the held Sports Day Trophy aloft in front of the celebrating Branson team.

Families in West Sussex are being invited to take part in the ‘10 Minute Shake Up’ campaign this summer to help encourage kids to get active. To sign up just head along to any West Sussex library or sign up at www. nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up The ‘10 Minute Shake Up ‘ from Change 4 Life and Disney, aims to inspire children to reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, with fun, manageable 10-minute bursts of exercise. It has lots of new and exciting 10-minute games and activities for children to play as part of four Disney teams: Big Hero 6, Frozen, Monsters and Toy Story. Children can help their chosen Disney team win by taking part in as many Shake Ups as they can each day throughout the summer. The council says 10-minute burst of activity can make a real difference and help towards children getting the 60 minutes they need each day. West Sussex county councillor Christine Field, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “Evidence has shown there is a strong link between physically active children and improved self-esteem, confidence, attention span and even academic achievements. It is really important that we help encourage good habits for life. “Exercise is really important for

children. This is a fantastic, fun initiative to encourage children and families to get active. With the summer holidays coming up, I hope people across the county will sign up and get active together.”

The council says 10-minute burst of activity can make a real difference and help towards children getting the 60 minutes they need each day The council says more than a third of children in the UK are overweight, yet 79% of parents with an overweight child do not recognise that they are. Of those that do, 41% do not realise that it is a health risk. According to the council, parents tend to overestimate how active their children are. This is the second year that Change4Life has teamed up with Disney, with last year’s campaign resulting in children across the country being active for an extra 104 million minutes of last summer.

A fond farewell to local Head Teacher Shoreham to Horsham “Flyer” bus brought back for the summer Pupils, parents, governors and the wider community of Pulborough are preparing to say goodbye to St Mary’s C of E Aided Primary School head teacher, Mrs Heath, at the school’s Summer Fayre this Sunday 12 July. Mrs Alyson Heath will be retiring at the end of the summer term after over 12 years service to the school.

Mrs Alyson Heath will be retiring at the end of the summer term after over 12 years service to the school During that time she has worked tirelessly to make it an outstanding primary school and one that often sets an example for many others. This year’s Summer Fayre is set to be charged with emotion as well as the usual fun and games it offers to all. Not only will fayregoers be able to wish Mrs Heath a fond farewell but they will also be able to watch the excitement of the Wimbledon Men’s final on the big screen. “The school’s Summer Fayre is

our major fund-raising event of the year and one that is not only enjoyed by our children and parents but also the wider community,” says Mrs Heath. “As this is my last Summer Fayre, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people and businesses who have supported the school over the years. It is this level of support that helps to make St Mary’s such a special school and I am extremely

grateful to you.” The Summer Fayre opens at 1pm at St Mary’s C of E Primary School on Link Lane in Pulborough. As well as being able to watch the Wimbledon Men’s Final, the Fayre offers something for all of the family including BBQ and Pimm’s tent, bouncy castle, tea room, coconut shy, tombola, Hook-a-Duck, lucky dip and much more. The Fayre is organised by the school PTA.

Bus passengers can use the “Steyning Flyer” service from this weekend after its successful trial run last year. Operator Southern Transit says it will run every weekend from Saturday to September 6 . Last year the company tried for the first time the new Adur Valley Line, bus route 3, known as the “Steyning Flyer”. The low -floor, wheelchairfriendly buses will run every two hours. The company says it will be selling and accepting Discovery tickets and accepting valid concessionary passes. Starting at the Holmbush Centre in Shoreham the route stops at leisure and cultural spots closely following the downs link to Horsham. Ropetackle Arts Centre, local markets and the Adur Outdoor Activity Centre are all within walking distance of the route’s Shoreham bus stops. At Bramber there are the ancient remains and spectacular views of the castle. Next comes the historic market town of Stey-

ning and there are nature walks at Tottington Woods and Woods Mill. Henfield’s High Street full of shops and restaurants is a popular choice for shoppers. Further out-of-town both families and pizza lovers will enjoy “The Bull Inn”. Followers of the Real Ale Trail will want to visit the Dark Star pub “The Partridge” in Partridge Green and garden lovers can explore “The Camelia Botnar Homes and Garden Centre”. Passengers can get off at Southwater Country Park for relaxing land or adventurous water-based activities. Finally the route visits Horsham with its numerous cultural and leisure activities, where the bus stops at both the bus and train stations, which offer links for further travel. The service can also be used to visit on the Shoreham air show on August 22-23 and on August 31, Bank Holiday Monday, passengers will offered the chance to travel on one of the firm’s Route master buses.

West Sussex libraries set out reading Southwater children challenge for the summer holidays display art on old bridge Families are taking part in the ‘Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge in all West Sussex Libraries The free scheme runs until September 12 and encourages families to visit their library to borrow books and children collect stickers and other rewards for the books they read. This year’s challenge was accompanied by an official Guinness World Record attempt to set a new record for the most pledges received for a reading campaign. Libraries across the UK invited children, parents and library volunteers to pledge their support over the

launch weekend. Hundreds of pledges were received across West Sussex, including one from past Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson, bestselling author of The Gruffalo. Julia visited Steyning Library to lend support, sign children’s books and pose for photographs with families. The library saw a fourfold increase in the normal number of visitors for a Saturda. Elsewhere the pledging campaign was launched with West Sussex County Councillor Janet Duncton in Chichester. Janet welcomed children from St Anthony’s school who all pledged their support and took

part in some fun record breaking activities. The results of the record attempt won’t be revealed until all pledges have been counted and verified nationally, but we are confident in West Sussex that hundreds of families have pledged their support. Libraries across the county are expecting to register more than 13,000 children for the scheme over the school holidays. Children can join at any point in the summer and have until September 12 to read six books and earn a medal. For more information: www. westsussex.gov.uk/libraries

Children have their pictures of ladybirds and caterpillars displayed in public after taking part in a nature art competition. Passers-by can see the delicate and colourful work of the youngsters at the Old Railways Bridge in Worthing Road, Southwater. Following on from last year’s successful ‘Bee Competition’ Southwater Parish Council launched the ‘Ladybird and Caterpillar’ competition at the bridge. This was a community-based project organised by the council in

conjunction with Southwater Infant Academy, Southwater Junior Academy and Castlewood School. The pupils participated in a colouring and painting competition to decorate ladybird caterpillar templates. The 21 winners had their work reproduced on suitable material by BEL Signs of Horsham and it is now displayed on the bridge. Heads of schools, a group representing winners, parish councillors and others who have been involved in this project attended to celebrate the children’s achievements.

Giving a helping hand to conservationist society Council tax payers are helping a conservation project that has benefits for the community. Storrington Parish Council has given the Storrington Conservation Society £500 towards the group’s Fryern Dell project. The society said: “Today there is greater awareness than ever as to how the environment affects our wellbeing. “The protection of native species and biodiversity does much to preserve a healthy environment. “It helps our physical health and increases our enjoyment of our surroundings. “Our conservation work keeps all this very much in mind. However it is not just public green spaces that contribute to our surroundings. “If we are fortunate enough have gardens we can make them wildlife friendly. Bird feeders for example mean we can enjoy birdwatching from the comfort of our armchairs. Lazy perhaps, but worthwhile. “Nectar rich plants for the benefit of bees are both attractive and of practical value. “Our work, carried out by volunteers, naturally needs funding. So we are very grateful to the parish council for the recent award of £500

towards the Fryern Dell project.” The group says that the use of the Dell by the Brownies for camping, learning about plants and wildlife habitat is a pleasing example of what it provides. The group’s summer break ends on September 5 with the first work

How to become the sought - not the seeker Dee blick

www.themarketinggym.org

A never ending supply of clients is the Holy Grail of most small business owners. But if you really want your pipeline to be full of customers you have to commit to sharing your expertise on a more public platform. This is the surest way of moving you from being the person who seeks work to being sought after. It’s something I have committed to in the last thirty years to very good effect. The fact is that within you is an expert. It may be struggling to get out suppressed by the voice that questions if you are really worthy of that title when you compare yourself to others. But with so much noise coming at us today, as an expert, a genuine person of influence in your field you can cut through the clutter and shed light; inspire others and provide much-needed direction. You can become a beacon of expert common sense honed from the many years you’ve spent working your craft and building your knowledge and expertise – whether you’re a builder or a web designer. But where do you start if you’re to profit from being an expert? Well firstly you must remove your modesty blinkers and audit your ex-

pertise. This is not dissimilar to creating your CV except this time the exercise is for you only. The idea is to make you realise just how far you’ve come and for you to acknowledge the real value in what you have to share. Then you have to push out of your comfort zone. “I can” “I will” “I am” should be phrases of choice. Next up is identifying the audiences that will benefit from your expert status. Where do they hang out? What do they read? Essentially, where can you find them? You want to be a proactive expert and this entails seeking out opportunities to engage with the people that need your expertise. Now it’s time to prepare an expert plan. How can you disseminate your expertise? In blogs, on forums, in printed publications, on the radio, on social media, at networking groups, at exhibitions and public speaking at local or national events? This means more pushing out of your comfort zone and perhaps brushing up on your presentation and speaking skills. You can now prepare the assets that will underpin your expert status. For example you will need a speaker biography plus a short biography to append to articles and blogs and, you’ll need to practice pitching to journalists, editors and bloggers. Finally if you really want to hog that centre stage you could write a book! Not just any old book but a brilliant book in which you share real nuggets

of your expertise for the benefit of your readers. I hope I’ve persuaded you to embark on your journey of becoming The Sought After and not The Seeker. And this month’s customer service award goes to... I thought I’d spice up my monthly column by shining a spotlight on a local business that has gone the extra mile with a great product and service. In my last column I mentioned the absolutely amazing builder Alex Walker and his team who as I clatter on the keys is back in our home weaving his magic with a big smile.

It’s always reassuring when you look forward to the builders coming in isn’t it? Well joining Alex this month is...The Wimpy. It’s a long time since I’ve set foot inside a Wimpy but my niece Kate has recently returned from living in Canada and is now living in Horsham, her first part time job being at the Wimpy. And I confess to being very pleasantly surprised by it. Firstly the service is excellent, swift and always delivered with a smile and, the prices are very keen. The smoothies and milk shakes are the best I’ve had in a long time and I have to say their

Borde Hill will mark its 50th Anniversary, by inviting the public to a celebration to be held on August 30. Popular music band, The bb Collective, will perform classic 60s music to complement the 60’s dress theme, with food and drink, garden guided tour, games and much more. Visitors are encouraged to get into the 60s groove and bring a picnic to enjoy the entertainment with. In the morning, current owner of Borde Hill Andrewjohn Stephenson Clarke, will lead a series of talks on the Garden’s history and its creation by his great grandfather. Visitors can also enjoy an exhibition of historical documents dating from the 1900s, which include archived photographs and rare letters to Borde Hill’s founder, Colonel Ste-

phenson R Clarke, from the Great Victorian Plant Collectors. The bb Collective's original band, Soul Sauce, was formed in 2007 to provide a fresh and funky new approach to live music entertainment. Since then, they have played all over the world at live events, awards ceremonies, parties, gala dinners and over 200 weddings. August is a great time to explore Borde Hill Garden with its herbaceous borders and gold standard roses in full bloom. The Paradise Walk has been replanted with late summer colour to delight visitors with kniphofias, salvias, geraniums and asters. The tranquil Italian Garden is also a highlight in Summer, with its terracotta pots filled with agapanthus and pelargoniums.

Footgolf is coming to Horsham. Yes, you heard it right, 'Footgolf', the UKs fastest growing sport, is coming to our local area and more specifically, Rookwood Golf Course. This fun activity can be enjoyed by everyone and is particularly popular with families. The aim of the game is quite simple: Kick the ball towards the flag, and try to get it in the hole, in as few kicks as possible! The 9 hole par 3 course at Rookwood, has proved to be an ideal venue for this new sport. With the average longest distance people can kick a ball being 50 yards, the length of the holes on the course are ideally suited to Footgolf. Luke Blacker, General Manager of the golf course, quotes: “Golf has

seen a decline in participation over recent years and, in particular, with young people taking up the sport. Footgolf is proving to be very popular and we believe that by getting the younger generation into this new sport, we can also help create a bridge into taking up golf.” Visitors to the course are welcome to bring their own football, but can also hire one from reception. Rookwood is located very close to the centre of Horsham and can be accessed on foot or bike via public footpaths or by road. So what are you waiting for? It’s the summer – remember to play safe! Thousands of school children start their summer holidays this week and safety advisers are urging them to enjoy it safely. With the promise of warm weather and long days, there is plenty of scope to be outside enjoying the fresh air, whether it be camping, kite-flying, fishing or field sports. Safety experts at UK Power Networks, which delivers electricity to the East of England, London and the South East, are warning youngsters to ‘Look out and look up’ before they pitch their tents or cast their nets, to make sure they are not near any

overhead electricity lines. Ros Forbes, public safety and education adviser, said: “I can remember how excited I used to feel not having school for six weeks and planning all the things I was going to do – but we want all the youngsters to enjoy their leisure time safely. “Cables and power lines can carry anything from 230 volts to 132,000 volts and even coming into contact with the lowest voltage cables can be fatal, so the main advice is to steer well clear of any overhead power lines, or indeed any electrical equipment such as substations.”

The networks’ safety team gives regular demonstrations, at Crucial Crew safety events and county shows, to spread the safety message and Ros is hoping the youngsters they have met, will remember the powerful safety message throughout the summer holidays. “Put very simply, our message is to be very aware of the environment around you. If you’re near an overhead line or electrical equipment, take extra care and move further away. Electricity can jump across gaps – just like lightning – and it can kill you.” Other top safety tips include: Anglers should take their rods apart before moving from one place to another and to carry them parallel to the ground If a kite gets caught in electrical wires or equipment, let go of the string or any attached control wire immediately. Don’t attempt to touch the string to pull the kite free – highvoltage electricity can travel down string Campers should avoid, if at all possible, pitching their tent or caravan directly under or close to an overhead power line. Metal and carbon fibre tent poles, guy lines, TV aerial poles and almost every other long object can conduct electricity. Campers and caravanners should never attach or tie anything to power line wooden poles, pylons or electrical equipment and never light a fire under an overhead line as the heat from the fire could cause the wires to sag dangerously low or break. UK Power Networks has a Power Up website to raise awareness of the safety issues. It is aimed at young people aged between seven and 16 and has facts, quizzes, downloads and resources for teachers and parents in line with the National Curriculum. The company website also has several downloadable leaflets containing safety advice on a range of topics including angling, kite-flying, camping and caravanning, which are available here. Ros added: “These guides are very useful and not only cover do’s and don’ts, but also dispel a few myths like thinking you’re protected because you’re wearing rubber boots!”

Happyscamps soft play cafe a fun day out for young kids in Horsham Local mum of two, Kerry Hampson, opened Happyscamps soft play café in Horsham’s Swan Walk in October 2014. Aimed at children aged 0-5 and their parents/carers it is open to the public six days a week on a drop-in, pay-as-you-go basis. As Kerry explained to The District Post “I realised that there was the need for a drop-in, indoor play facility for very young children in Horsham. I often wished there was a play café in the area and I recognised that other parents would welcome one, so I decided to make it a reality!” The success of the venture was rewarded when on Friday 3rd July Kerry attended the Business Matters awards, along with two managers Sophie Allen and Chloe Taylor, at the Hilton London Gatwick . They were delighted to be announced as winners of the Start Up Business category. Sundays are reserved for exclusive hire birthday parties and parents can hire out the whole play café complete with staff and food and drink for their child’s party. These exclusive birthday parties have proved very popular and can be fully booked months in advance. Other birthday packages are available, details of which can be found on www.happyscamps. co.uk For those of you doing the Elephantastic trail over the summer Happy Scamps will also be taking part and this launches in the Carfax on Sunday with the trail beginning on Monday. PETs POST

Sponsored by

Welcome to our monthly ‘Pet Post’, a section dedicated to news, advice and stories from the lives of our loveable friends. This week our sponsored columnist Abbi Moon from the Horsham branch of the RSPCA talks about what to do to keep away pests. If you have any stories, pictures or tips you would like to feature in this section, please email dpearson@thedistrictpost.co.uk. We hope you enjoy the read.

How to keep pests away from your pets abbi moon RSPCA

Fleas can be a problem even in the most spotless home or on the cleanest pet. It is estimated that 95 per cent of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the surrounding environment, not on your pet so you will need to treat both your pet and your home, as fleas can survive without a host for many months. To check for fleas, watch your pet and see if they are scratching themselves more often than usual. Check their fur, can you see tiny dark specks or small browny-black insects scurrying about? It might be useful to use a sheet of white paper and groom your pet’s fur onto the paper to check for this. If you are getting insect bites it could be a sign that fleas are living in your home. Flea bites can make your pet uncomfortable and itchy but they can also bring a host of other problems.

Pets can be hypersensitive to flea saliva and suffer an allergic reaction called Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD). We see FAD quite often in the cats brought into our cattery in Roffey for rehoming. For these affected animals, we recommend a strict regime of flea treatment to stop the cat coming into contact with fleas. You can prevent fleas becoming a problem by regularly treating both your pet and your home. Flea larvae can become infected with tapeworm eggs. If your pet eats an infected flea whilst grooming itself, it can become a host to this parasite. If your pet has fleas you should also make sure your pet is treated for worms. It’s advisable to clean bedding regularly and vacuum furniture, floors and skirting boards to help destroy fleas; remember to throw away the bag after vacuuming otherwise the vacuum could reinfect your house and pet. Fleas can also pass diseases to your pets. Myxomatosis is a serious disease in rabbits which can be

spread by fleas. If you suspect your rabbit has fleas, it’s important to speak to your vet about a suitable treatment. Choose a flea product recommended by your vet. It’s very important that you only give your pet flea treatment that is suitable for them. Products suitable for one species may not be suitable for another; some dog flea treatments contain permethrin, an insecticide that is safe for dogs but highly toxic to cats so always read the label carefully and check the ingredients Another common pest is ticks. Whilst ticks can affect pets all year around, many owners report an increase in Spring and Summer, possibly as animals bound through longer grass picking up these little arachnids. If you find a tick on your pet, it’s important to remove it as soon as possible although you’ll need to make sure you remove the whole tick as the mouthparts can often stay embedded. You can get tick-removing tools from your local pet shop but if you are not confident then go to your vet practice for help.

An update on Tiny Tim the dog

This week after 7 months in branch care Tim has now been signed off from his veterinary surgeon. Tim came into branch care via an Inspector before Christmas 2014 with a severe injury to his Achilles tendon. The operation needed to save Tim’s leg would cost the branch in the region of £1,500. An appeal was sought and we were overjoyed to receive enough money for this first operation to go ahead. After 8 weeks another operation was necessary to remove the pin holding his Achilles tendon in place followed by rest and physiotherapy. Tim’s leg isn’t yet perfect but both operations were successful and Tim

has kept his leg. Basically, the severe injury sustained to his Achilles tendon and due to his injury being left for many weeks resulted in a section of the tendon and scar tissue having to be be removed. Over the coming months Tim needs to lengthen this tendon so that he will have the same freedom in this leg as his other one. He is wearing a custom made support (made in America) on walks to ensure his tendon and ankle are kept in the right position as he does have a tendency to walk on his toes throwing his ankle forward ie over extending, this is probably because his tendon

feels tight following surgery. Tim is walked on his lead but is now allowed to run around for a few minutes after a walk, and this will continue for the weeks ahead. We are so pleased that Tim is enjoying the freedom off lead and able to behave as a dog naturally would. The long road to recovery that Tim has endured has been tough for him and for those involved in his care but we believe it was all worthwhile and we are so thankful and appreciative to all those wonderful people who donated funds to ensure Tim was given the chance of a normal life. Thank you to Peter Haggis at Wilbury Vets in Hove who performed his surgery and after care and grateful thanks to his wonderful foster carers whose patience, kindness and care has meant Tim spending his recovery in homes and not kennels. He is one lucky boy! Tim’s surgery and veterinary treatment/physiotherapy has cost over just over £2,500 of which the branch has paid £1,000. We would welcome further donations to ensure dogs and cats that come into branch care with appalling injuries be given the opportunity to be treated as successfully as Tim’s has. Donations could be sent by cheque/ postal order made payable to “RSPCA Sussex North” c/o our treasurer at Twineham Place Farm, Twineham Lane, Twineham, West Sussex RH17 5NP or via our website www.rspcasussexnorth.org.uk. Thank you. Tim remains in foster care currently and will shortly be rehomed to his forever home.

Protecting your pet from summer ticks Ticks are small insects related to spiders and scorpions — and their bite can cause real problems for both dogs and cats. The prime season for tick bites is from May to August and Heath Veterinary Clinics, in Burgess Hill and Hurstpierpoint are offering advice on how to deal with these irksome passengers. Emily Chadburn, Senior Veterinary Surgeon at Heath Vets, offers information on all things tick related so that pet owners can be prepared if any nasty critters take a fancy to their much-loved furry companion: Ticks carry a number of diseases and one of the most common is Lyme Disease, which in dogs and cats can cause symptoms includ-

ing joint inflammation and lack of appetite. Humans can be affected too by this potentially serious illness with fever, headaches and rashes in the early stages. Ticks are commonly found in woodland, long grass and bushes where they lie in wait for a passing animal to jump on to and suck their blood before falling off to find another victim. The tick may not bite the animal immediately which is why it’s especially important to check your pets regularly. The skin and hair should be thoroughly examined and particular attention given to places where a tick can hide, including the ears and crevices such as thigh and shoulder joints. Removing the tick as soon as

possible is key to reducing the chances of both illness and infection and it is imperative to make sure that it’s completely removed. It’s easy to leave the head behind, meaning potential infection or your pet. A special tick removal tool is available, or tweezers can be used, but it’s essential to pull the tick out in a steady motion without twisting or jerking, as this is when the head or mouth parts can be left behind in the skin. Once the tick has been completely removed, the skin should be treated with antiseptic and the animal’s health monitored for 2448 hours. Tick repellent sprays or powders are also available.

Cats with arthritis - how to manage a hidden problem Osteoarthritis is a painful degenerative disease of the joints that is common in both humans and pets. The consequences of this disease for the affected pet are reduced joint mobility and pain resulting in lameness or stiffness and a very much reduced quality of life. It is therefore important disease to both identify and manage effectively. Joint disease is common in pets and is thought to affect up to 20% of the dog population with around 95% of affected individuals being over 5 years of age. The number of affected cats is harder to know due to the more subtle signs that cats often show but in fact up to 95% of cats over 12 years of age will show x-ray evidence of joint degeneration. The number of affected cats appears to be higher than we perhaps realise. So how would you know if your cat might be affected? Cats may not show obvious lameness but signs can be very non-specific. Things to watch out for include reluctance or reduced ability to jump, decreased jumping height, stiffness in gait, changed activity levels, changed personality, reduced appetite or reduction in grooming. Your pet’s annual health check and booster is an ideal time to talk about this with your vet if you are worried that your cat may be showing some of these more subtle signs. You can then discuss whether your cat would benefit from any a d d i tional

management steps to put the spring back in his or her step. Management options for cats with joint disease need to be tailored to the individual but steps that can be effective include one or more of the following: anti-inflammatories, weight management, environmental modification, modified exercise, physiotherapy and joint supplements. So what are joint supplements? Joint supplements are not drugs but are food supplements (also known as nutriceuticals) and are commonly recommended as an aid to managing joint disease. Typically they contain substances useful for the repair of joint affected and contain substances such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate. These substances are an aid in maintaining normal joint structure and function. They are reduced in the diseased joint and their supplementation can aid joint repair, more normal joint function and reduction in inflammation. These potential effects make them an ideal addition to any joint management program. What else can be done to help? If you have a cat with suspected joint disease there are a number of simple but helpful steps you can take to help. These include placing food and water bowls in easy to reach locations, locating bedding and rest areas out of draughts where the cat can easily gain access. Gentle grooming may also help your cat to feel brighter if he is unable to do it himself. If you think that your cat may be showing signs of joint disease of have any questions about using joint supplements in your cat please do not hesitate to contact your veterinary surgeon.

How to create the perfect garden environment for your pet As the weather gets warmer, many people look forward to spending more time outside and our pets are just the same. But is it really possible to maintain a luscious lawn when you have playful pets? The experts at Armitage Pet Care explain how to combine the two. Avoid any great escapes A determined Houdini can scale great heights, dig deep ditches and squeeze through the tiniest of gaps. Make sure any gates and fencing are secure and high enough to keep your pets in and any unwanted visitors out. A thorny hedge can be a useful addition, preventing cats from climbing and dogs from digging. The dense, prickly interior will

also attract birds to your garden. Pet-proof your plants Flowers and plants can really brighten up your garden but some are highly toxic to our four-legged friends. If eaten, lilies can cause kidney failure in cats and just 15g of a daffodil is enough to kill a dog[1]. Double check to make sure you have nothing harmful growing in your garden – The Dog’s Trust publishes a useful checklist – and watch out for vegetables too. Onion, kale and tomatoes are all harmful, so it’s a good idea to keep pets off the vegetable patch as well! Toilet training As beautiful as your garden looks, your pets still use it as their toilet. Create a specific spot for your dogs

and cats to go using wood chips or a raised bed. Teach your pet to use it by leading them to the area and rewarding. Remember to pick up poo quickly to make the garden more enjoyable, especially if you have guests over or children playing outside. Avoid smelly bins by composting doggy doo. The ecofriendly Clean Green Dog Loo from Good Boy allows you to flush poop away into the ground, eliminating any odours. Be careful with chemicals Sometimes our plants and flowers need a helping hand to really flourish but make sure your pet isn’t exposed to the harsh chemicals that might be in your fertilisers and pesticides. Opt for a safer organic

fertiliser, for example bone meal, and other natural remedies such as crushed up eggshells around the base of plants to deter slugs. But be wary that even those can cause problems for your pet if too much is ingested! Make it fun No one wants a garden full of craters but if your dog is a digger, why not

make an area where he can enjoy himself without destroying the flowerbed? Encourage them by hiding their toys and treats in the right place. Make sure there’s a shady part of the garden for your pets to relax in and ensure that they have access to water if they’re outside over a long period.

What a busy year!

What a busy year! The work calendar has certainly been filled up this year with different events and occasions... Firstly with the grand opening of our Ashington Surgery in May 2014; a purpose-built practice, with warm, accommodating kennels and a modern theatre suite. Clients are welcome to visit for a complimentary coffee and a 'backstage' tour. From April 2014-2015, on behalf of the Dogs Trust, we microchipped a staggering 250 dogs free of charge. In October 2014 we held a spectacular coffee morning where all staff contributed by baking an array of different cakes. We raised an amazing £407.47 for Macmillan Cancer Support. A big thank you to all those who also contributed in eating said cakes - we could not have raised the money without you! Our November £99 dental offer saw 35 dentistry procedures being performed, equating to at least one dental per day! Because of the popularity we ran another £99 dental offer again in March. We were announced as the Best UK Vets Winners 2014, based on having 180 excellent online reviews from our clients. Massive congratulations to Sarah Lane, one of our nurses, who wel-

comed her beautiful baby boy, Alfie, weighing 8lb and 2 ounces in December 2014. Further congratulations to our two veterinary nurses who became registered this year; Sarah West who has completed her 3 year apprenticeship at Arun Vets, passed her exams with flying colours and registered in January and Chloe Emmerson - who registered in April after working in Australia as a veterinary nurse. In February 2015 our Ashington branch became an approved training practice for our nursing students, we now have 8 clinical coaches throughout our branches, qualified to provide training and support for our student nurses. In May 2015 some of our brave employees endured a 2.5k mud run to raise money for the ABC Animal Sanctuary raising over £500. Our latest achievement is receiving an 'Outstanding' pass rate after our RCVS practice standards scheme inspection this July. We are all very proud! We also welcomed 3 receptionists, 3 vets , 2 nurses, 1 student nurse and 2 animal care assistants to our continually growing team! Lions cricket event a great success Youth Cricket Dave Smith – Sports Editor Thirteen teams from in and around Horsham District travelled to Cranleigh School to compete in the annual youth cricket competition held between teams from The Identilam League and organised and run by Horsham Lions Club. Following the round robin stage

the semi finals of the Cup saw Barns Green beat Horsham, West Chiltington narrowly beating Barns Green, Roffey crushing St Peters and Lindfield beating East Grinstead. After a bitterly fought match Roffey narrowly lost to Lindfield and West Chiltington quietly beat Barns Green. The Semi final of the Plate Competition saw Lingfield and West

Chiltington winning through to the final after hard fought matches. Lingfield batted first and scored 74 for 0 wickets after their 5 allocated over's. In reply West Chiltington U/13's scored 64 for 1, just falling short. In the final of the Cup, West Chiltington batted first and scored 46 for 2 as a result of some very tight bowling. Lindfield went into

bat and their two openers attacked from the outset passing the target in 2 over's and 5 balls to win the match. Prior to the presentation of the trophies by Lion President Clare Wilson, Lions Tom Osborne and Peter Garland, the event co- organisers, thanked Cranleigh School for hosting the event and expressed the hope that the event could return in 2016. Storrington into next round Billingshurst win two

Pam Healy delivering a winning shot Bowls John Wharmby - Storrington BC At the away league match against West Tarring Storrington failed to take significant points. The only rink that won was David Ogley’s team who took 21 shots against West Tarring’s 13. Peter Newman’s team were really showing poor performance up to 4 – 18 when they decided to do something about it. They proceeded

to take 13 shots against their opponents’ 2, but all to no avail. Similarly Paul Leatherbarrow’s team were lagging 6 – 13 when they woke up, but again too late, losing by 1 shot. The 4th Storrington team left no doubt about performance, losing by 15 shots. The final result left Storrington 11 shots down and with only 2 out the possible 10 league points. Geoff Page, Gerry Newman, Ian Younger & David Ogley won 21-13

Neil Tewsley, David Chinn, John Rimmer & Peter Newman lost 17-20 Les Wilson, R Naldrett, Harry Kendall & Peter Leatherbarrow lost 14 -15 David Bain, Bob Manning, Chris Walter & Richard Pettet lost 9-24 West Tarring 61 - 72 Storrington, League points West Tarring 8 – 2 Storrington As if to make amends for the previous day’s defeat, the 2 mixed triples teams home match against Chichester B.C. in a BML Cup match was totally different. Peter Newman’s team had no difficulty in winning by 12 shots, while the team of the Ladies’ Captain, Pam Healy, found it even easier, winning by 25 shots. This produced a final score of 58 – 21 to Storrington. Storrington team 1: Pauline Bain, Chris. Walter & Peter Newman won 26 - 14 Storrington team 2: Penny Bowyer, Paul Leatherbarrow & Pam Healy won 32 - 7.

Pulborough Bowls Club hosts fun day

Pulborough fun day was a success Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC The sun shone on Pulborough Bowls Club for its first community fun day last weekend, sponsored by Hub Electronics. The children's games were especially popular, with trophies for the best scores in skittles, target bowls and any other fun game that was invented by Mick Ralph on the day. Many adults were tempted to try their hand at bowls for the first time, whilst others looked to make the transition from indoor bowls to outdoor or to dust off their bowls after years away. Ivan Salmon and Jeff Davy, who had been valiantly serv-

ing up burgers and hotdogs all day, managed to have a laugh and a well earned drink as the event carried on until 10pm; approximately £400 was raised towards improvements to the canopy area. Bowls action saw a Brookes Motors League fixture against Chichester on the Pulborough Green. 2 mixed triples played, with top rink going to skip Len Adsett, with lead, Steve Adsett and number 2 Treacle, 19 -17. John Brown and team made it the full 6 points for Pulborough with a second winning rink 18/16. The final score was 37 - 33 to Pulborough. The carpeted green at Southbourne made the second BML fixture of the week a much tougher

proposition, with 2 tight games resulting in reverse fortunes for Pulborough and 0 league points. 4 Triples played the Grasshoppers with 2 wins for Pulborough from skips Paul Day and Hugh Hubbard, with top rink going to Hugh, lead Fred Bushby and number 2 Malcolm Gray 15 - 11. The final result was 55 49 to the Grasshoppers, a very close game all round. Finally in a busy week the fast surface at Petworth proved challenging for some of the Pulborough players but the result did go in their favour, with 2 rink wins and overall victory 73/64. Top rink for Pulborough went to John Brown, with lead, Julie Day and number 2, Mick Ayling 21 - 14.

Billingshurst won on Horsham’s new green Bowls Keith Barraclough – Billingshurst BC Billingshurst 52 – 42 Stedham The second round of the Holbrook Cup saw Billingshurst against Stedham at home. ‘Hurst used home advantage and by the halfway stage were 15 shots in front. Stedham then managed to claw a few shots back but could only reduce the deficit to 10 in favour of the hosts. Top rink for Billingshurst went to Ray Sutton, Anita Colliety & Betty Weller (+7). Billingshurst will now play Liphook in the next round. John Lucas, Chris Laker & Alan Readshaw lost 10-11 Marion Clark, Barry Gilbert & John Bennett won 22-18 Ray Sutton, Anita Colliety & Betty Weller won 20-13 Billingshurst 55 – 119 Cranleigh Billingshurst expected a tough game away at Cranleigh and were not disappointed. In trouble practically from the start Billingshurst slid to a 64 shot defeat. One bright spot of the evening was the visitors’ top rink of Hazel Sandford, Barry Gilbert & Roy Smith who held off a late Cranleigh challenge to win by 1 shot.

June Bennett, Anita Colliety & Alan Knight lost 9 - 34 Robin Clark, Chris Laker & John Bennett lost 4 - 27 Ray Neal, Stan Morgan & Betty Weller lost 15 - 18 Hazel Sandford, Barry Gilbert & Roy Smith won 16 - 15 John Lucas, Sylvia Smith & Geoff Weller lost 11 - 24 Horsham 86 - 93 Billingshurst Billingshurst visited the new green at Horsham and came away successful. Treading carefully the visitors took a little time to settle in and by the tea break held a slender 3 shot lead. On resumption play swung in favour of the hosts, but by winning the final end on every rink Billingshurst won by 7 shots. Top rink for Billingshurst went to June Bennett, John Lucas & Geoff Weller (+10). June Bennett, John Lucas & Geoff Weller won 26-16 Ken Peters, Anita Colliety & Alan Readshaw lost 22-25 Stan Morgan, Roy Lawrence & Betty Weller lost 12-19 Tessa Richards, Barry Gilbert & John Bennett won 18-12 Brian Richards, Sylvia Smith & Alan Knight won 15-14

Horsham pair triumph in snooker tournament Snooker Dave Smith – Sports Editor Richard Martin and Robert Davies have won the Rotary District 1250 Snooker Pairs competition after a competitive final held at The Horsham Club. Richard and Robert are both current members and past Presidents of The Rotary Club of Horsham. In a very tense and closely fought final against Don Durrant and Chris Martin from Bognor Regis Rotary Club Horsham took the first frame on the pink, 43 points to 29, before Bognor struck back, winning the second frame on the black, 41-36. In the third and deciding frame, Horsham established an early lead, only to see their opponents gradually claw their way back to within just two points, before the match was decided when Bognor Regis fouled on the final black, handing the frame and the 2015 title to Horsham, 45 points to 36. 25 teams from Rotary Clubs throughout Sussex and Surrey entered the competition this year. The snooker pairs is a part of Ro-

Richard Martin and Robert Davies won the snooker pairs tary’s sporting calendar that covers a variety of sports matches between Rotary Clubs, all being contested competitively but in great spirit. Horsham sprinter represents Roffey go second after Manenti sinks Brighton England at championships Athletics

Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Orla Brothers made her debut for England

15 year old Millais student Orla Brothers competed for England against Ireland, Scotland and Wales at the SIAB (Schools International Athletic Board) Track and Field Championship in Grangemouth, Scotland, last weekend In what was her first competition at international level Orla, who runs for Crawley Athletic Club, amazingly won silver in the under 17 300m event in a time of 39.80 and a gold medal in the 4 x 300 relay, in which she ran the last leg. International recognition has come for Orla during a season in which she has progressed substantially as an athlete. She became the Sussex 300m champion earlier in the year and then won the Sussex

Schools Championships under 17 300m event in a time of 39.6, breaking a record that has stood since 2006. The Sussex schools success qualified her for the English School Championships in Newcastle earlier in the month at which she won gold in the 300m under 17 women’s race in a time of 39.59. Orla’s success in Newcastle gave her the ranking of the UK number 2 in her event and gained her the place in the England international squad for last weekend. Orla’s coach and Crawley Athletic Club Chairman Dave Buckett said “Orla has given up many school trips and days out to train and this dedication and hard work is showing in her amazing results. If she continues to work hard then there is no reason that she can’t go all the way.” Orla said after her England debut “It was a great experience and I felt very proud to run for my country”.

Horsham crush Bexhill at the double Saturday July 18- Sussex Premier League Bexhill 277-7 declared (55 0vers) Horsham 281-5 (44 overs) Horsham won by 5 wickets

Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter Although Bexhill notched up a formidable total Horsham pulled off an impressive victory, romping home with the highest run chase of this season’s Premier League and moving up to fourth. 558 runs were scored in the match for the loss of 12 wickets. Batting first Bexhill were 143-4 before a century from Sussex representative cricketer Callum Guest and a fifty from home skipper Jonathan Haffenden enabled a declaration at 277-7, George Garton, Michael Munday and Ben Shoare taking two wickets each. Then, Horsham, batting consistently, were well up to the task, needing only 44 overs to complete a double over Bexhill having beaten them comprehensively at Cricketfield Road in May. Ben Shoare, Tom Haines, skipper James Johnson and his brother TJ all made forties – TJ finishing the game with 28 off five balls with a 4 and four consecutive sixes after Sussex 2nd XI regular George Garton had celebrated his England U19 call up with 74. James Johnson told the District Post: “We batted well as a team and won quite easily really - it can’t be easy bowling to TJ when he bats like that! This was our most satisfying batting performance of the season but I’m confident that we’re capable of even better.” Tomorrow (Saturday) Horsham visit Brighton & Hove, for whom the season has taken a dark turn, top of the table in early June they have now descended to seventh after six defeats and a tie in the last seven games. Scorecard link - http://sussexcl.play-cricket.com/website/results/2356468

Australian Ben Manenti starred for Roffey with bat and ball Saturday July 18 - Sussex Premier League Brighton & Hove 185 All Out (44.4 overs) Roffey 186-3 (24.2 overs) Roffey won by 7 wickets Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter With a game in hand, Roffey jump to second in the table on 261 points, seven behind Preston Nomads and two ahead of East Grinstead. Brighton & Hove were well placed to set a sizeable target - until Roffey routed their middle order and tail before hastily knocking off the runs for a comprehensive win. Leigh Harrison took a wicket in Brighton’s first over but two teenage Sussex signings – Sam Grant (52) and Philip Salt (30) – staged a recovery along with thirties from Captain Chris Grammer and Jordan Rollings. But from 161-3 depleted Brighton collapsed to 185 all out, Ben Manenti taking 4-29 and Rohit Jagota 3-30. Roffey had 65 overs to get the runs, but unfazed by the loss of an early wicket, batting with Captain Josh Fleming (45 not out) and Mike Norris (40) Ben, allergic to singles, smashed his match winning 90 off 38 balls, including 12 fours and

6 sixes. His 50 came from 18 balls, five of which were dots. The game finished at 5.15pm, Aussie overseas player Ben saying: “We did well to keep them down to 185 – about 70 short of par – especially as the outfield was fast and the wicket was a bit to the side. We fielded well and then I was seeing it OK. It was great to get a 30 point win – I’m having a great time here, it’s a great club!” Josh Fleming added: “We were staring down the barrel at a big Brighton score – Ben & Rohit bowled really well. If we’re going to win the league we need to keep winning like that to keep the pressure on Nomads and East Grinstead.” Although, uncharacteristically, he didn’t take a wicket – or need to bat – Roffey’s Dan Smith had a smashing game. He wasn’t too tired, but his windscreen was shattered – from an opposition six off his own bowling. “Not my day!” quipped Dan. Tomorrow (Saturday July 25) Roffey are at home again, entertaining sixth placed Cuckfield, who beat Nomads last week, while, at Fulking Nomads take on strong contenders East Grinstead. Billingshurst undone by Sussex’s Callum Jackson Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Ben Shoare hit 40 and took 2 wickets

Billingshurst’s posted a demanding total – only to be undone by a superlative batting display by Sussex’s Callum Jackson, Eastbourne arresting a relegation threatening run of six straight losses. Confidently batting first after winning the toss Hurst got off to a good start, reaching 123-2, Mike Burroughs making 64. Then Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi (58) and 17 year old Tom Nightingale with 70 not out took over, enabling Hurst to declare on 254-4 with 53 overs at their disposal. Replying, Eastbourne lost a wicket before scoring and then Abidine Sakande and Will Fazackerly grabbed two further scalps to reduce them to 34-3. But that was as good as it got for Hurst as 20 year old Jackson batting for his home town hit 17 fours and 5 sixes in his outstand-

ing 156 not out from 129 balls. Hurst did taste one more success but by then the game was up, Eastbourne cruising home with overs to spare, avenging their defeat at Billingshurst in May. Philosophical Hurst skipper Ben Williams told the District Post: “We put up a good score and then made early inroads into their line up but the wicket was placid and Callum batted really well. A ball change didn’t help us but we can’t complain – we came away with 12 points, so it wasn’t the end of the world!” In a busy, important home weekend for Billingshurst at Jubilee Fields tomorrow (Saturday July 25) they entertain mercurial Bexhill five wins, five losses and a tie - before, on Sunday, taking on a Sussex Development XI still seeking their first success. Sussex opener Luke Wells goes for a Duck

Coming to the Horsham Festival both sides were struggling but Notts won comprehensively with a day to spare, torpedoing fourth day income and pushing Sussex into the relegation zone. Winning the toss Notts fully capitalised on the opportunity to bat first. Yet, Sussex drew first blood, reducing the visitors to 30-3 with wickets from Matt Hobden and Ollie Robinson. James Taylor and Rikki Wessels regrouped but when Wessels and then Patel departed, both to Robinson (4112), with Notts on 186-5 honours were even - only for spectators to be treated to a batting masterclass from James Taylor and skipper Chris Read. Taylor took 163 off Sussex in 2012 and 204 in 2014 but after passing his first century of the 2015 campaign he accelerated, Notts finishing the first day on 358-5, Taylor poised on 163. On day two Read notched up his third championship hundred of the season, Steve Magoffin bowling an exemplary 31 overs for 1-53, but this was Taylor’s day, his superlative 291 – his highest score – overtaking, amid other records, the previ-

ous best at Horsham (Ian Bell’s 262 in 2004). Sussex Chairman Jim May quipped: “Taylor is a lovely player, but why does he keep doing it to us!” Taylor attributed his achievement to former Sussex and England coach Peter Moores, saying: “I’ve worked closely with him and he’s been brilliant,” a beaming Moores told the District Post: “It’s great to be back at Horsham!” Clearly bruised, how would Sussex respond? Initially well, until the 79 run first wicket partnership gave way to 123-4, the top six batsmen all failing to progress after reaching double figures, Ed Joyce and Luke Wells scoring forties and Luke Wright 50, Sussex subsiding to 213 all out, seven wickets falling before lunch on day three. Following on Sussex recovered to 92-2 and 183-3, Matt Machan getting a run a ball 108, but, again the middle order and tail folded, Harry Gurney taking his match haul to 8 scalps and 40 year old bowling coach Gary Keedy, on his seasonal debut, five. Wicket keeper Chris Read’s seven catches edge him closer towards 1000 victims, on reaching which he has threatened to retire, a major loss for cricket followers. With Sussex supporters far from happy opinions varied as to whether the major problem is with the fragile batting or

limited bowling. Captain Ed Joyce said: “I’m very disappointed but if we’d got another wicket on the first morning we might have restricted them to a par 350. It was difficult to juggle our depleted bowling and we need to bat better as a unit after several of us got starts. We’re in a relegation battle but we can turn it around.” This coming Sunday the Festival concludes with a 50 over game in the first round of the Royal London One Day Cup - Sussex playing Lancashire. The attractive fixture starts at 10.30am, Ed Joyce saying: “Lancs are a strong side but we’ve got Machan, Wright, Nash, Bailey and Cochopa in our line up so we’re potentially good, too.” Scorecard link – http://www. espncricinfo.com/county-championship-div1-2015/engine/ match/804253.html
