Over the last week, we’ve spoken to the people of Horsham about what makes them happy, and it’s no surprise that it’s the people

that make the community smile. Following a feature in The Times newspaper on Friday, April 10, Horsham was ranked as the second

Tony Hockney, 77, Rusper “I spent 25 years in the navy then took on the St Leonards Arms pub in 1980 – where the Tesco Express now stands. I love

the community Spirit in Horhsam and the Churches working together to help people. My favourite place to shop is Waitrose.”

News Benjamin Coren newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk

“With three kids aged 17, 14 and 10 the area offers everything. Good education and good opportunities for them post education. I love the people here! Having previously been in the forces and moved around some places aren’t particularly welcoming. The people here are cosmopolitan and everyone gets on. The size of the town means you have a good choice of shops. The mixture of independent retailers and high street chains means it is not a homogenous town centre. They particularly like the little alleyways where you can find an unexpected flower shop!”

Lisa Costello, Owner, Horsham Enoteca “The people of Horsham really make the town! They have been amazing and have helped us immensely since we started up. They have fantastic attitude and it is their support that has been instrumental in making Enoteca work. Since introducing our extended opening hours we have had even more opportunity to see this at work. People pop in after work and off the train. We attract a slightly older crowd with stories to tell and the atmosphere in here promotes mingling, even networking, but it is always comfortable and fun. Lisa will be getting stools in shortly for weary legs, even better to enjoy the chilled draught white, rose and sparkling wine she is introducing, made from ‘glera’ the grape used to make Presecco.” Kylie and Dan Haskell, 30s, Horsham “We moved to Horsham having lived in Japan and various places around the UK, most recently Fareham, Hampshire. Kylie came here for an interview and was struck by clean the town was. No litter, no graffiti. Horsham is perfect for young families with easy access to the countryside but not too far from the coast and Brighton. We love the farmers market and the independent traders such as Crates and Carmelas whichreally add to the vibe.”

The District Post review

Dave Smith - President, Horsham Rotary Club “The Rotary Club of Horsham are involved in many activities and events in and around the town and therefore we get to see and meet the people of our great town at close hand. It always amazes me how responsive and happy Horsham people are in getting involved with the towns activities and helping those less fortunate than themselves while having some fun. Events such as our annual Pancake Races and Children in

Need activities give the chance for a good mix of people from all walks of life to come together with a smile on their faces. This summer we will be holding a follow up to the fun filled and successful Giraffe Trail, The Elephantastic Trail, where once again the smiling faces of the young and old alike will enjoy tracking down the elephants in our lovely town with its superb businesses. So, what makes our town the second happiest place ...the Horsham people.

Providing the mean

Great food and great restaurants keeps smiles on all our faces

When it comes to eating out, Horsham is spoilt for choice and with ‘Eat’ Street fast becoming a top destination to eat out, the culinary options available to Horsham diners are sure to put smiles on their faces. We spoke to Tristan Mason, owner and head chef at Restaurant Tristan, Horsham’s Michelin starred restaurant located on East Street. Tristan said: “Horsham is a lovely market town steeped in history. It’s a great place for families and the local produce is second to none which reflects in what we do. I was lucky enough to open one of the first restaurants on East Street about 7 ears ago and i’ve seen it grow as an eating hub with businesses opening here bringing more people into the town.

“My main goal is to make people happy. Every day we use locally sourced ingredients and deal with nice suppliers. In the restaurant business my main objective is for everyone to enjoy their food and to be happy.” Tristan’s family are also in Horsham and his partner Candice runs front of house in the restaurant. A regular friendly customer base is something Tristan loves about Horsham, he said: “Our regular customers are almost friends, it’s a tight knit community and it’s really nice that everyone knows everybody.” A spokesperson for Horsham Unlimited, the Town Centre Business Partnership said:“We all know that good food and good customer ser-

vice makes us all happy. It is not that many years’ ago that Horsham’s café and restaurant offer was rather lacking but the town centre today has the most fantastic range of places to eat and drink whatever your budget. East Street in particular is the home to many loved brands and with Piries Place car park just behind it is an easy destination for lunch or dinner. Elsewhere in the town centre there is also a wealth of cafes and restaurants through Carfax, West Street and into Bishopric. “ We have been particularly pleased to support applications for al fresco seating which adds to the atmosphere in the town and we know is particularly popular with shoppers when the sun is out”.

Town Centre Events - Garry Mortimer-Cook “I think that the high frequency and variety of events and town centre activities helps to make Horsham a happy experience for residents and visitors right through the year”, said Horsham District Council’s Town Centres and Events Manager, Garry Mortimer-Cook. “Some of these are organised directly by us at the Council, like the Saturday bandstand concerts from April to September and larger events like Easter’s Piazza Italia and September’s Big Nibble Food Festival, but it is also in large part due to the way that Horsham’s community organisations, like Horsham Rotary and Horsham Churches Together work alongside

us to create great family friendly entertainments like the Pancake Races, Easter and Halloween trails, charity markets and December’s Carols and Fireworks. The very next town centre event, Saturday 9th of May’s Broadwood Morris Day of Dance with the Carfax market becoming ‘medieval’ for the day is yet another great example of local interests working together to make a quite unique spectacle that has been enjoyed by many for years and which we are pleased to help facilitate. We hear people all the time say that they love Horsham because, ‘there is always something going on’ which is exactly what we and our partners aim to contribute to people’s ‘Horsham Experience’.”

Horsham’s happy residents of yesterday Billingshurst Car Hire

Horsham Museum www.horshammuseum.org

Happiness is being given sweets by the old lady who lived in Horsham’s Manor House in the Causeway on Boxing Day. Happiness was having a riotous time in the 19th century at the Horsham fairs – knocking coconut shys, or enjoying the Battle of Flowers as the bands marched round the Carfax and were pelted with petals. Or earlier it could be with your mates seeing a murderer being publicly dissected in the Carfax – and it only cost 1d but that was back in the 18th century, or seeing a good flogging, hanging , branding and crushing, not happiness for the criminal, but thousands flocked to see it in Horsham. For some it was spending a night or two with a lady of ill repute as

told in a popular 18th century Horsham rhyme. For others happiness in Horsham came from eating its celebrated gingerbread just as today’s generations savour the local delicacy. We know that thousands of Horsham children enjoyed days out in the 19th century on the train to visit seaside resorts, whilst the town’s annual outing was always popular. Happiness in Horsham included getting drunk on election bribes in the 18th and 19th centuries, also seeing the latest film being projected in the tiny cinema. For many it was having a meal paid for by the town’s charities to stop starvation in the winters and for provision of warm blankets. For many it was enjoying the simple pleasures of life, enjoying the countryside, etc. Or seeing the town’s cricket, football and athletic clubs succeed- seeing the town’s name promoted when Shrubb became world Champion and was carried through the streets, or when Billy Law won

the Town Crier competition. Or enjoying the folk singing of Henry Burstow and the local folk dancing. What made people happy in the past is very similar to what makes us Happy today, Horsham has had some bad times, but from its beginnings over a 1000 years ago Horsham has succeeded, it has grown and flourished, rather than stagnated or failed. Horsham Museum There is noise, laughter, chatter and shrieks as visitors wander around joking, reminding or joshing each other as they see half remembered items. The museums galleries don’t preach, nor intimidate, they are for the public to enjoy, relax and relate to – it is the town and district museum and they have great pleasure in knowing it is theirs. The ever-changing exhibition and gardens mean that there is always something to see makes it rewarding to visit and happiness comes from knowing time is not wasted.

Fresh produce from a The happiest days of your life friendly local market Local schools tell us what makes them happy Katrina Evershed ,Year 7 - Tanbridge House School “I love living in Horsham – it has great facilities for spending time with friends and family, which makes me happy! I like the swimming pool for meeting up with friends, and restaurants to eat in with family. There are also lots of fun clubs and activities. I go to Tanbridge House School - it is a high achieving school which promotes one very important word; kindness. There is a lovely vibe in our school. Everyone is kind to each other and to others in the wider community. I think this helps to lead to a happy atmosphere in the town.”

Forest School Ms S Denning - Headteacher, Forest School “We think happiness is so important here at Forest that it's been a school improvement plan priority for the past two years! At Forest, we put an emphasis on our boys feeling safe and secure at school - this is the foundation upon

which we can then build outstanding learning. We offer our pupils a package of stimulating lessons, excellent relationships and fantastic extra-curricular opportunities. Our regular questionnaires from both parents and pupils tell us that we do a very good job - boys are happy here at Forest!”

Millais School Horsham is a traditional market town and still retains lively and vibrant markets every Thursday and Saturday in the heart of the town centre. Horsham markets include the Sussex Food & Drink Awards award-winning Local Produce Market which is held every Saturday in Carfax. Thursdays has become a mecca for Street Food and you will find lots of happy faces out and about collecting their lunch from all the local chefs cooking up world food every week. The

newest edition to Horsham’s market offer is a mixed market that can be found in Piries Place every Saturday too. Special markets are also held throughout the year and include Italian, French and Vintage markets and a huge food event as part of the Big Nibble every September. The French & Vintage Market this year takes place on Sunday 31st May in Carfax. For more information visit www. horshammarkets.co.uk

Cara Exall, Student reporter, Millais: "Horsham's community adds to its charm and makes it such a happy place to live. At Millais I have been part of this community, where friendship, aspiration and opportunity are a central focus. It's said the people make the place and in Horsham that couldn't be more true, because as students we strive to support one another and share in each others' achievements."

Swan Walk celebrates 40 happy years in the heart of Horsham

PJ Aldred - Horsham Markets “We are delighted but not surprised Horsham has been hailed as one of the happiest market towns in the UK. It is a delightful town that has grown into a Foodie's paradise and, let's face it, food and drink really warms the heart. We are surrounded

by the lush Sussex countryside that is brimming with fine local produce from farms, dairies, vineyards, breweries and artisan producers. All of this sold in Horsham from the weekly markets, specialist food shops and served up by the many eateries in town.”

Celebrating its 40th birthday this year, Swan Walk Shopping Centre continues to offer a fantastic blend of shoppers favourite national brands alongside great niche and independent offers – very much mirroring all that is good about the town centre as a whole. This is what makes Horsham stand out from the crowd and makes it a happy shopping environment as well as a great place to live. Click & Collect is widely available throughout the centre allowing customers the chance to enjoy the Horsham experience whist collecting their on line purchases and the centre team continue to work with the wider community too. “A great example of our community ethos is the sponsored Police car available to the Neighbourhood Policing Team

thanks to our partnership with Lifestyle Ford;” said Gill Buchanan, Centre Manager. “ The centre also works with many charities. “Shooting Star Chase have raised thousands of pounds over the years with their Christmas Gift Wrap Service hosted by the centre and our annual Cancer Research UK Donation Station – the 2015 event is underway today and ends on 26 April – has raised over £100,000 in seven years. We know that shopping centres and town centres are a significant part of many people’s lives and believe that we should proactively participate and give back for the benefit of everyone in Horsham”; added Gill. “I am not at all surprised that The Times rated Horsham so highly in the happiness stakes.”

Age UK Horsham District is encouraging everyone in Horsham District to take a break and have a chat for The Big Chinwag on Friday, June 19, to raise vital funds for the Charity to help it combat loneliness. It couldn’t be simpler to get involved and make a difference, whether it’s catching up with colleagues in the office, taking a break at school or at home to make a vital difference to older people’s lives by making a donation in exchange for that extra break. With over one million people aged 65 plus describing themselves as always or often feeling lonely, and over a third who consider the television as their main form of company, facing later life alone and feeling lonely is a stark reality for too many older people in the UK. Everyone can make a difference by getting involved in The Big Chinwag and raise vital funds for Age UK Horsham District to help older people make the most of life. Contact communityfundraiser@ ageukhorshamdistrict.org.uk to sign up and get a fundraising pack full of fun ideas, posters and activities to get chinwagging. Janice Leeming, Chief Executive Officer at Age UK Horsham District, said: “We all like a good natter so getting behind our Big Chinwag is a great excuse to take a ‘chinwag break’ and chat to colleagues or friends and family. We’re asking people to make their Big Chinwag extra special by fundraising to help us tackle loneliness which is stark reality for too many older people.

Local music and real ale in store this summer at The Malt

Benjamin Coren News Reporter

Summer is just around the corner, and with that in mind The Malt Shovel are getting ready for their annual beer and music festival which promises three days of quality real ale and great local, live music. Running for three days from from May 1, to May 3, over the bank holiday weekend. It will feature four acts a day, a beer tent and a BBQ. Landlord, Sam Clayton took over the pub in 2013 and since then has been working to transform it into a traditional local pub with a modern personality. Sam told The District Post: “When we first got here the pub felt unloved. Since then we’ve worked hard and had a full redecoration, breathing new life back into what is a Horsham staple and given it a fresh look.” Renovations included stripping back the old floor, remodeling the bar top and opening up the bar area. The Malt Shovel now boasts a much wider range of drinks too with six ales on at all times, featuring at least two Sussex breweries and a large number of bottled craft beers, cask ciders and a wide range of premium spirits including 13 different tequilas, 10 gins, 12 vodkas and 24 varieties of whisky. They are also now offering a lunch menu that includes home-

made burgers, filled sandwiches and bar snacks. All food is freshly made on site and ingredients are locally sourced with meat from New Street Butchers. Sam previously spent 14 years running cocktail bars in London, and he wanted to make The Malt Shovel an environment for everyone and create a safe and friendly atmosphere for customers. Sam added: “Pub landlords were once considered pillars of the local community. I want to hark back to that providing high standards, good beer, premium ales and a welcoming, friendly environment. The Malt Shovel’s annual festival is a big part of their packed live music and events calendar. Sam said: “We love music, we have live music here every Saturday and open mic nights every first and third Thursday of the month and four times a year we do an originals showcase. We hand-pick singers, songwriters and bands to perform as it’s often difficult for original acts to get into pubs.” The Malt Shovel holds at least six live music events a month and they even have a house guitar for those spontaneous sing-alongs. The annual music and beer festival will include a wide variety of local talent as well as a beer tent open daily serving 28 beers including local ales and the best of British as well as ciders. There will also be a BBQ each day. Acts performing this year will be announced on the pubs Facebook and Twitter feeds. You can follow them at www.facebook.com/maltshovelhorsham and @themalty.

Sainsbury’s Horsham Rotary International helping to conquer strokes in Horsham receives bee hotel Sainsbury’s Horsham received their Bee Hotel this week. The solitary bee, the less famous cousin of the honey bee is most easily identified being the red mason bee. The benefits of using these hard-working pollinators is that in an industrial greenhouse a number of colonies can work for a whole s e a s o n alongside the people picking and tending the crop without any fear of stinging. The result for the grower is an abundance of grade “A” quality fruit and vegetables that meet the supermarkets’ high standards. Other benefits we have identified are an increased turnover for the grower with minimal extra input resulting in an increase in shelf life for the crop without further preserving treatments, and as the farmers know, the better the pollination, the straighter the cucumber!

The Solitary bee population has dropped over the last decades due to farming styles. Taking out the hedges and field boundaries leaves them nowhere to nest, and grants to replace the old falling down wooden shed in the corner of the yard with a new metal clad building denies the bees any opportunity of boring holes to lay their eggs. Sainsbury’s have started to install “bee hotels” which enable bees to better survive the winter. They are installed, far enough away from the store so there is no interference with customers or the bees. Dursley, Gloucestershire was the first store to have “bee hotels”, a 1st for a UK supermarket. We currently have over 150 bee hotels in suitable stores across our estate, that are looked after by our resident bee keeper. The “bee hotels” are made from sustainably sourced timber and recycled materials.

In a bid to conquer stroke, residents from Horsham and District are invited to a free blood pressure test organised The Rotary Club of Horsham in conjunction with the Stroke Association in Swan Walk shopping centre on Saturday April 25. High blood pressure remains the single biggest risk factor for stroke, contributing to over half (54%) of strokes in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Know Your Blood Pressure day on Saturday April 25 is about raising awareness of the link between high blood pressure and stroke. Residents in Horsham and District can get their blood pressure checked by trained medical staff and receive information and advice on steps to keep it under control. In 2014, Rotary and the Stroke Association organised over 400 events across the UK. In the same year, Rotary GBI was honoured with a Special Recognition Award by the Stroke Association for their long-term support of the Know Your Blood Pressure Campaign. Dr James Logan, Channel 4’s own TV Doctor, presented the Life After Stroke Award to Rotary at a prestigious awards ceremony hosted by Baroness Karen Brady. The Rotary Club of Horsham's

President, Dave Smith, said: “Rotary’s long term support for the Know Your Blood Pressure campaign has reached hundreds of thousands of people in the last decade, potentially saving many lives. The ideal blood pressure is 120/80 but we know a significant number of people have readings above that and a quarter have dangerously high blood pressure with readings over 140/90. These events can play a big role in reducing strokes across the country. It’s clear from the results from previous years in Horsham that high blood pressure is far more common than you would think. A number of Horsham residents in past years have been surprised by the results of their blood pressure test and have benefitted from the knowledge and advice given. "Getting your blood pressure checked is easy and quick. We hope

to see many people from Horsham in Swan Walk on Saturday taking advantage of this free service; it’s a simple way to reducing your risk of having a stroke.” Laura McGuinness, who leads on stroke prevention at the Stroke Association said: “High blood pressure is often referred to as the silent killer because it doesn’t present symptoms and many people have no idea their health may be at risk. Over 9 million people in the UK are currently registered with high blood pressure but estimates suggest there could be up to almost 7 million people who are currently undiagnosed and at risk." Members of Horsham Community Responders along with local doctors and nurses will be present throughout the day to take blood pressures and give advice as a free service to Horsham residents or visitors.

Charlie Dimmock comes Charity runner raises over 1.1k for to Newbridge Nurseries motor neurone disease association Promoting Westland Gro-Sure

Saturday 25th April 10am - 4pm which aired in January of this year. Charlie joined 14 of Britain’s favourite gardening experts to inspire the nation to save Britain’s rich gardening heritage. In addition to television appearances, Charlie has also penned books such as Enjoy your Garden and Container Gardening as well as a regular column in the Mail on Sunday. ‘We’re delighted to have Charlie join us for the day,’ says Garden Centre Manager, Steve Nicholls, ‘As a well-known and popular gardening expert, her extensive knowledge will be a real treat for our regular visitors.’ Newbridge Nurseries became the 17th Garden Centre to become part of the Blue Diamond Group in January 2015.

A local man has raised £1,113 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) at the Brighton Marathon earlier this month. Ian Betts completed the race in 5.51 in aid of his mother who sadly passed away three years ago. Ian said: “The MNDA is very important to me because my mum died of the disease a few years ago. I was

looking through their event magazine when I spotted they had places for the marathon. You watch events like the London Marathon and are impressed with what people can do. I wasn’t a runner but, I tried to apply for a place and was successful. Training started in November. “I was really pleased that I was able to run most of the last 2 miles

and seeing my family at the end was the real highlight. Crossing the line was just pure relief (the feeling of achievement has followed since) and knowing that I ran under 6 hours was just amazing.” Ian is planning to continue running, however he is unsure if he is ready for another marathon.

same every year you are encouraging pests and diseases. Plants such as Matthiola and Cheiranthus are susceptible to club root and as you probably know there is a particularly bad problem with Impatiens and associated downy mildew, which is devastating the plants across the world. On the vegetable patch, now is the time to start thinking of sowing your French beans, Runner Beans, Pumpkins and Courgettes in pots. They are not difficult plants to grow, just make sure your seed is fresh, the compost is clean and your mind is pure. The last bit isn’t necessary of course, you can think of anything you like, but as the nights are still cold, put them on windowsill or under a cold frame to enhance the germination.

Gardening

I spent Saturday being serenaded by a Philomel at a garden in Loxwood, which I have to say was one of the most exquisite experiences. It is nice to know they are back and if you are lucky and pop down to the canal-side about a quarter of a mile from the Onslow Arms (before a hearty lunch of course), you may just be lucky enough to share the experience ‘before he stops his pipes in growth of riper days’. Be aware, they stop singing at the height of the day, so early is best. Philomel? Why ‘tis a Nightingale of course. A summer visitor much like

our Cuckoo and similarly in decline. As April 15, was First Cuckoo Day, the traditional start of summer in West Sussex, I thought I’d let you know. The gardens are all looking spectacular this year. The spring was mild and the air warm-ish, so the blossoms have been great. After a pretty flat winter, it has been quite a reviving experience all round. I have to say mind you, we could do with some night rain - a heavy shower to water the plants or we will be heading for drought. By now you should have planted all that you wanted to plant from the perennial list - lest you spend the year watering it, which is neither good for the environment or your water bill. That said the garden centres

would not be in business if we did what we were supposed to do. Of course the annuals and tender bedding plants are still to come on the planting calendar - although it is still a little early.

The gardens are all looking spectacular this year As the old wives knew, winter can return all the way into May, so try to hold back a little in reserve. If we do get a snap change, you will be smiling whilst others tear their hair out. Remember, if you haven’t ordered your plants yet, try to change the list yearly. By planting the

The beast of Pulborough

www.kokorouk.com

Neil arnold Sussex Folklore

Sussex folklore and history is rife with peculiar tales; some weirder than others. One of my favourite long-lost tales comes from Pulborough, which although is more than an hour away from Hailsham by car – features a story in its history which just cannot be ignored. The story itself revolves around a building known as Coombelands House. In the year 1900 an extensive refurbishment took place on the premises and at the time one of the carpenters working on the building lived only a mile or so away and so would walk to and from Coombelands each day. Of course, this meant that some mornings and nights – due to the duration of the building work – he would be walking down extremely dark winding lanes. One night, after finishing work at about 7:00 pm, the carpenter made his way out of the house and across the bridge which crossed a pond in the grounds. Suddenly, and seemingly out of the shadows emerged an enormous creature – something the size of an elephant – broke from the darkness. The witness stood in horror, transfixed by the set of huge, fiery eyes which met his frightened gaze. However, as if things could not get any weirder or surreal; the beast or whatever it was suddenly shrank to the size of a small dog and hastily sped passed the terrified onlooker, expressing a mournful moan as it did so. The witness, although shaken

thought that he must have been the victim of a hoax and so bravely decided to follow the manifestation in the hope of catching the perpetrators. However, upon reaching the spot where the creature stood the man was startled to see the entity vanish into thin air. Unable to find any further signs of the monster; the carpenter was said to have sprinted all the way to what was then the Five Bells Inn – after all; there’s allegedly nothing like a swift alcoholic drink to calm the nerves. Staff and customers at the public house reported how the door of the inn flung open and there, standing before them was the shaking and wide-eyed carpenter who had the most bizarre story to tell. No-one else encountered the same creature that the carpenter had but legend states that just over a year or so later; whilst excavations and renovations continued at the house a pile of human bones were unearthed from behind an old wall. I’m unsure what happened to these remains but it is said that long after the house was completed owners and staff reported numerous paranormal incidents including eerie groaning noises and fleeting shadows. No-one really knows what the carpenter saw that dark night back in 1900; it has often been argued that the manifestation had been some strange hallucination projected from his psyche whilst sceptics argue that maybe the witness had been drinking beforehand. Either way, the man always stood by his word that he’d been confronted by a hideous apparition and so the next time you’re frequenting the dark avenues in the vicinity of Coombelands Lane; always bear this frightful story in mind.

The Company crowned coffee kings 4 years in a row

Benjamin Coren

News Reporter

The annual Cafe Italia has finished and this year’s winner is once again The Company who have won for the fourth year running. Once more The Company will display the coveted bean trophy for another year. The people of Horsham had the opportunity to vote for Horsham’s best cup of coffee in a number of it’s coffee shops. Votes were counted here at The District Post offices and The Company came in first with Crates Local and Artisan close behind. General Manager Paola Di Lena said: “I think it’s a combination of great coffee, friendly staff and the atmosphere here. We weren’t going to enter this year, but it’s so much good fun we changed.”

Though The Company’s primary business is as a hairdresser the cafe downstairs is extremely popular with local coffee connoisseurs. Paola said: “For the first two years we won, we actually served a different brand of coffee. So I think it’s down to our baristas and the atmosphere here.” Paola’s brother Vince established The Company as a hairdresser’s 10 years ago and opened the coffee shop 5 years ago, and since then they have watched the business grow in the town. In response to how they feel about next year’s competition, Paola said: “I like odd numbers, so hopefully we can win again next year. It’s great for the town to have this competition and Horsham is very lucky to have a number of great coffee shops and boutiques.” The Company is located on Middle Street, Horsham, and is open Monday to Saturday from 9am. Benjamin Coren Review: The Wizard of Oz

Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society (HAODS) have once again whisked audiences away with their latest musical performance of The Wizard of Oz. Directed by Yvonne Chadwell with musical direction from Andrew Payne the latest HAODS production keeps up with the quality of show

previously achieved in past performances. For those who don’t know the story, The Wizard of tells the tale of a young Kansas girl named Dorothy who during a tornado is transported to the land of Oz. There she meets the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow. With her three friends she embarks on a journey to the emerald city to meet the wizard of Oz and ask his help to get home and to help each of her friends. However, the scheming Wicked Witch of the West has other plans.

The performance featured a terrific variety of professionally made sets and great lighting, I was particularly impressed with the storm which made great use of sound and models to show Dorothy’s home being thrown into Oz during the tornado. Each performer delivered their lines with authentic accents and humor, and vocal performances were of top par. A stand out vocal performance for me was Chris Dale as the Scarecrow performing ‘If I Only Had A Brain. The choreography on this

piece was also great with Scarecrow stumbling around the stage. A crowd favourite was Buster the dog in the role of Toto. They say never work with children and animals, and in this case it may have been Buster stealing the show! Adrienne Cox gave a wonderful performance as Dorothy and demonstrated her vocal strength with ‘Over The Rainbow’. As always HAODS have put on another professional quality performance and I look forward to seeing their next production.

Buzzing confusion from Robin Ince

Friday 8 May 8pm In a fast follow up to In (and out of) His Mind, Robin Ince continues to prod into our brains with a sharpened pencil to try and work

out just how much free will anyone can have. Is anyone a freethinker? Looking at Milgram, Mcluhan and experiments into the mind, Robin tries to work out if we can arm ourselves

against mass media despots and live life pragmatically or will we always just be clumsy animals justifying each mistake with a wellhoned alibi? Well, it will be something like that - basically, another night of shouting, gesticulating, gurning and enquiring - a curious mind and id on the rampage. Could one expect any less from a Sony Gold award winner, three times Chortle award winner, Time Out outstanding achievement award winner and host of the Infinite Monkey Cage? The show takes place on Friday, May 8, at 8pm at The Capitol, Horsham. Tickets cost £14 for adults and concessions are £12. To book tickets call 01403750220 or visit the website at www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

Chelsea Fever!

The greatest date in the horticultural calendar is nearly upon us; budding gardeners, botany enthusiasts and garden designers will all be gearing up with excitement for the Chelsea Flower Show this month. It is the most famous flower show in the world, attracting visitors from all continents. Formerly named as ‘The Great Spring Show’, it was first to be held in 1862 at the RHS garden in Kensington. Over almost a century, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show has witnessed numerous changes in horticultural fashion. Over the years, show gardens have mirrored the changing enthusiasms of garden designers - from the Japanese and topiary gardens of the early days (Japanese dwarf trees, now known as bonsai, were seen at the first Show in 1913), through the rock garden craze during the war years, the paved back yards and cottage gardens of the 1980s, to the contemporary sculptural gardens of the present day. At the heart of Chelsea is the exhibition of plants staged in the Great Pavilion by professional nurserymen and women. New trends constantly appearing at the show illustrate the changing face of garden design and mark this country’s increasingly abundant enthusiasm for their gardens, their love of plants and the ever changing horticultural history.

Latin Names! When confronted with the complexities of botanical Latin, many squint with the intimidation of not really understanding what it actually means. Latin is of course a so called “dead language” in today’s verse but is invaluable within our knowledge without us really being aware of it.

With so many descriptive names cumbersome to use and often difficult to correlate, Linnaeus introduced his two-word system for naming plants and animals, by which a single quality distinguished the species from all others in its genus. This was more commonly known as ‘binomial naming’.

Latin is recognised as being commonly used within the fields of medicine and horticulture. It was during the 18th century that a botanist called Carl Linnaeus first introduced his simplified system of naming plants. This at a time when it was vital that physicians and herbalists had to accurately identify plants for the main source of medicines. Latin was the universal language of scholars and scientists during these centuries, and with plant hunters and pioneers discovering a wealth of unknown plant material throughout Europe, plants were being given all sorts of names which would vary from language to language.

Thanks to Linnaeus and botanists of his time, a modern-day gardener in Normandy can email a horticulturalist in Hong Kong about Cornus alba Sibirica (Siberian Dogwood) and know they are both discussing exactly the same plant. Plants have common names which are more recognisable to the novice gardener, but the Genus and Species names are the important element when distinguishing particular varieties in the gardening world. Without delving into too much detail, all plants belong to a group known as their ‘Genus’, for example, Acer. This determines the plants genetics, so they will all have

similarities in their aesthetics to each other, but will vary in colour, leaf shape, flower etc. This is then denoted in their ‘Species’ name. A species name is given to distinguish a specific quality a plant has, inaugural to itself as a new specimen. Acer palmatum refers to this plant having palmate-shaped leaves with five, seven or nine pointed lobes. Other names can then follow which refer to a ‘Subspecies’ or ‘Cultivar’ name given to determine yet another attribute, or region it is native to. Do not be worried or put off by the unfamiliar names of plants. Next time you are at the nursery, make a note of the Latin name of a plant, and then look it up on the computer. It can be very interesting to find out the descriptive meanings and there is usually more common sense applied to these names rather than that of the highly intellectual scientist of today!

Wisteria sinensis This large deciduous climber native to China and the Eastern hemisphere produces fragrant racemes of mauve, pea flowers from late May through to June, followed by ornamental velvety bean pods. It can be used to grow against a house wall, using wires for support, or can look particularly stunning when trained along a path up overhead archways.

Open Thursday to Sunday at Birchfield Nursery – 10.00am - 4.00pm

It prefers a sunny situation for if placed in a cold spot, a harsh winter or continual frosts can affect flower yields in the following spring. Plant in fairly well drained and cultivated soils.

Come for a browse around the nursery and on your visit, enjoy a cup of tea or slice of cake in our coffee shop. Now open Thursday to Sunday Kidders Lane, Henfield, West Sussex BN5 9AB Tel: 01273 494058

Horsham shine at the National Finals Atlantis swimmers return home victorious Ladies Cricket Martin Read – Sports Reporter

The young Horsham Ladies team came within a whisker of causing a major upset on finals day in their first year of competing in the ECB National Indoor Cricket Competition, highly creditably finishing as runners up by the narrowest of margins. In March at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium they had spectacularly sailed through unbeaten from the regional finals and on National finals day at Leicester they proved to be exceptionally tough competitors. In their first match in the round robin tournament - against a Staffordshire side skippered by England’s Danni Wyatt - Izy Noakes and Flora Bertwistle bowled frugally making early inroads, then wickets from Hannah Phelps confined the opposition to 82. After a steady response Charlie Walder put Horsham ahead before Noakes and Phelps secured the win. In the second game against Hampshire’s Hursley Park Phelp’s last ball six boosted Horsham’s total to 86 but Hursley sneaked past with just a ball in hand. Horsham’s last encounter was against New Farnley from Yorkshire, all teams being on level pegging with a win apiece. Strong batting from Walder, Collis, Noakes and Phelps, including two 40 run

Swimming Dave Smith - Sports Editor

The first race in the South East Regional Junior Triathlon Series took place last Sunday, April 19 in Gillingham, Kent. The event itself consisted of a swim and a run, known typically as an Aquathlon. Eight Atlantis swimmers took part and came home with both individual and team honours. Excellent performances in the Youth category saw Gemma Cumber post the fastest swim and Gaby Eltham

take first place in her first ever multi-sport event. In TriStar 3 girls, Evie Clarke and Amelia Wright ensured a 1-2 for Atlantis, with Sam Clarke featuring strongly in TriStar 3 boys. Will Carey won TriStar 2 boys with Isabella Hayes and Ethel Whyman also recording fast times in the TriStar 2 girls section. Atlantis were narrowly beaten into second place for the overall team trophy by home club Medway Tri, but succeeded in pushing triathlon specialists, Bodyworks XTC of Eastbourne, into third.

Roffey to increase cricket opportunities for youngsters Horsham Ladies cricket team finished runners up at national finals partnerships, posted a demanding 97. Horsham defended strongly with two wickets for Bessie Beadle and further breakthroughs for Noakes, Collis and Phelps but the bowling prize was grabbed by Bertwistle with six scalps in her last three overs, including three stumpings by Walder, facilitating a superb 65 run victory. Meanwhile, on the neighbouring pitch Hursley edged

through to finish on level points with Horsham, stealing the National Indoor Championship courtesy of their previous one run win. Youthful Horsham, the surprise package on finals day, gained much from the experience and eagerly await commencement of their outdoor programme on 10th May, coincidentally with a trip to Hursley Park.

Junior Cricket Dave Smith – Sports Editor With support from Identilam Cricket Academy Roffey Cricket Club are aiming to increase the number of local children who are involve in grass roots cricket. Mickel extends Championship lead at Brands Hatch John Mickel extended his championship lead

Motor Sport Dave Smith – Sports Editor Following his success at Oulton Park three weeks earlier John Mickel was back in action at Brands Hatch for Rounds 2 and 3 of the UK National Legends Championship. The track started off with a wet and slippery surface but the sun soon came out to dry out the track and enable some very good conditions for racing. In race 1 Mickel started from the third row of the grid after drawing the position from a lucky dip ball draw. John decided to run on wet tyres but as the track dried out the lack of grip took its toll and in the end the Faygate racer did well to hold onto sixth place.

Race two and with a reverse grid, John started three rows from the rear. The car set up was perfect and John was able to carve his way through the pack. Then a car spun in front of John giving him nowhere to go but to hit the car. This resulted in John re-joining the race at the rear of the grid but with just bumper damage John began hunting down the other drivers passing them one by one. There were not enough laps to make it all the way to the front of the pack and so he happily settled with 4th place. His point’s position from the first two races put John near the rear of the field for the final of the day. With a clear race and no mishaps, John was able to drive his way through the pack but with not

quite enough laps, he settled for 3rd place. In race 1 on the Sunday a fantastic start resulted in the John taking 1st place at the finish with team mate Henry King taking 2nd John started near the rear of the field in race two but was soon hunting down the leaders putting in the fastest lap of the race to finish in 4th place. Race three and from 23rd on the grid John closed down the drivers ahead resulting in a decent 2nd place finish. John finished second overall on the day and this, combined with his overall podium finish on Saturday and a head start from Oulton Park on the Championship points means John Mickel has extended his lead in the Championship.

Hawks back in winning Hawks secure second seed in playoffs habit against Lions U12 Horsham Hawks 61 – 81 U12 Haywards Heath Eagles Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor

Hawks U14s return to winning ways Youth Basketball Dave Smith – Sports Editor Horsham Hawks U14 got back to winning ways with an impressive 67-46 victory away to Eastbourne Lions last Saturday. Hawks offense didn’t click in the opening period as they struggled to find their tempo but their defence was outstanding with Ellie Hutchinson doing a great job nullifying Lions main threat. A low scoring affair did see Kieran Lee, George Makin, Millie Lea Clayton and Hutchinson scoring for Hawks who took a 9-2 lead after ten minutes. The second quarter was much better for both teams with Hawks going on a 13 nil run with Josh Raby leading the way supported well by Makin to extend the lead to 22-4. Lions responded well as Hawks had to reorganise their defence when Lea Clayton for forced off by injury but replacement Maya Le Rossignol continued the good work at both ends of the court including back to back

buckets allowing Hawks to go in at the half 28-13 in front. The 3rd quarter was a closely contested affair as the teams traded baskets with 5 players for Hawks sharing 15 points. Lions continued to battle back ensuring the gap had only widened by 1 point with Hawks taking a 16 point advantage into the final period leading 43-27. Although Lions started the quarter in bright fashion going on an 8-4 run, Hawks steadied themselves with quality baskets from Joe Kershaw, Miller and Lee converting 2 from 2 from the line. Both teams produced their best basketball during a high scoring conclusion to the game with Hawks in particular showing their repertoire of plays amassing 20 points in the final six minutes running out comfortable winners 67-46. Kieran Lee (24) George Makin (15) Josh Raby (6) Jamie Miller (6) Maya Le Rossignol (4) Ellie Hutchinson (4) James Maclean (4) Millie Lea Clayton (2) Joe Kershaw (2) Amber Hutchinson.

With just a handful of games remaining in the Sussex League second placed Horsham Hawks faced two away games in two days starting at Haywards Heath Eagles and followed by a visit to the SWRA Bears in Shoreham. The Eagles began with solid defence which rattled the Hawks and forced early substitutions to Horsham’s starting guards as the physicality took a toll, while Haywards Heath took an early 16-8 lead. The second and third quarters ebbed and flowed as the Eagles advantage was extended whilst Horsham showed tremendous determination to persevere to reduce the deficit. As the third quarter came to a close a 10-0 run from the Hawks in just over two minutes narrowed the lead to six points setting up an exciting finale. Hayward’s Heath held firm in the fourth quarter and despite back to back three point baskets from Horsham’s Antonio Lozzi and Josh Lea-Clayton the Eagles held their advantage winning the quarter 29-21 and bringing Horsham’s impressive ten game winning streak to an end. Head Coach David Clayton said “As a team we have become accustomed to coming out on top winning 28 times in our last 31 games but we also understand that just as one victory does not define a team neither does one defeat. As always we will learn the lessons, improve and move on.” Hawks Scorers (v Eagles): Josh Lea-Clayton (15) Josh Tavolieiri (12) Miguel Venturini (8) Antonio Lozzi (7) Charlotte Willcox (7) Harry Rose (6) Fin Bennett (4) Amy Willcox (2) Jamie Coulson , James Lowe.

Hawks female players after win over Bears U12 Horsham Hawks 78 – 35 U12 SWRA Bears Horsham were back in action the following morning away at the SWRA Bears and got off to the perfect start taking a 14-0 lead inside the first two minutes of the game led by Josh Tavolieiri and Harry Rose shaking off all memories of the previous night’s disappointment. The lead was further extended to 39-9 with Charlotte Willcox and Meghan Stevens putting an 8-0 run together before the Bears scored two quick baskets to end the first half. After the interval Horsham continued to build with lightening quick finishing from Fin Bennett and back to back baskets from Jamie Coulson. Tough defence and aggressive rebounding from Anaya

Wakefield, Amy Willcox and Isla Head enabled Horsham to extend their lead to 61-11 before the Bears fought back with a run of their own outscoring the Hawks 8-2 in the final two minutes of the third quarter. A close fourth quarter saw both teams trading baskets but it was Horsham who took the contest 7835 guaranteeing the second seed and home court advantage in the playoff semi-final for the Sussex Cup competition that will be played next month. Hawks Scorers (v Bears) Fin Bennett (16) Josh Tavolieri (16) Harry Rose (12) Charlotte Willcox (9) Josh Lea-Clayton (8) Miguel Venturini (8) Jamie Coulson (6) Meghan Stevens (3) Antonio Lozzi, Amy Willcox, Anaya Wakefield, Isla Head.

Horsham Cycling’s recipe for success Cycling

Martin Read – Sports Reporter

April 17 marked the tenth anniversary of Horsham Cycling – a real success story to be celebrated at the club’s annual summer lunch at Rookwood Golf Club on June 7 following rides earlier in the day. Formation of HC was first mooted in autumn 2004 in a discussion between Keith Russell and current Honorary President Stewart Forbes. Horsham was growing rapidly and cycling was becoming ever more popular, Stewart commenting: “We wanted to start a club for all sorts of cycling, not just racing like the majority of cycling clubs in the South East. Our aim was to encourage gentle, social riders and also attract those wishing to focus on time trials.”

On the inaugural ride 21 cyclists pedalled to Rusper and Newdigate and then enjoyed a lunch at Forest School Youth Wing, a number of enthusiasts becoming members on the spot. Membership numbers have since increased tenfold to comfortably beyond 200, yet, thanks to sound management the modest £15 sub has been maintained at its original level. The Sunday morning rides from the Carfax – now organised by eight coordinators and an army of 44 leaders – provide enjoyment for an average 60 riders each week, notching up an astonishing cumulative 90,000 miles last year. But, that is far from the whole story, a variety of events having become regular features throughout the year. A comprehensive schedule of both time and reliability trials is augmented by annual trips, including rides to the Isle of Wight, Mouscron in Belgium, the Tour de France and cycling through the night to

the Suffolk coast on the Dunwich Dynamo. And, with the experience and confidence gained through HC, many members have now completed demanding cycling challenges such as Land’s End to John O’Groats. Hill climbs, indoor cycling tuition and competition, pub nights, quizzes, Christmas dinners and a host of other social events all contribute to a wide programme of activities. HC has its own members’ magazine – Chainline – its own riding livery obtained through Horsham’s Queen Street AD Bicycle Store – and an exceptional website: www. horshamcycling.co.uk Stewart Forbes sums up HC saying: “We’re a particularly friendly club, making new members welcome. We’ve got an impressive, hard working committee running the club and are determined to build on the success of our first 10 years, anticipating that there’ll eventually be sufficient demand for Saturday rides.”

Matt Crane scoring YM’s first goal of seven Saturday April 18 - Sussex County League Div 1 Ringmer 0 – 7 Horsham YMCA Football Tom Norris – football Reporter Horsham YMCA’s excellent end of season form continued on Saturday, as six different scorers helped Peter Buckland’s side thump lowly Ringmer 7-0, and lift them up to fifth in Division 1. Following a wasteful first fortyfive minutes, which saw the visitors leading by just a solitary Matt Crane header, manager Buckland made all three substitutions at the break, and it proved pivotal as an improved YM went on to comfortably dismantle the hosts. The third from bottom Blues, who

Josh Brown scored two goals for YM

relieved manager Jason Hopkinson of his duties at the end of March and saw their entire first team squad walk out in the process, completely capitulated in the second period, as a brace from youngster Josh Brown and further strikes from brothers Dan and Nick Sullivan, Dave Brown and skipper Ash Dugdale completed the rout. Coach Lyndon Buckwell commented: “I don’t think it’s that often that you score seven goals, but you are disappointed. We should have had another four or five easily. But to be fair, we’ve done really well over the last few games and this just confirms that we’ve been as good as anyone. “Today it was an awkward pitch and difficult conditions, and so to score seven goals, we’ve got to be happy with that really. The impor-

tant thing was the second goal, because I felt that if we got that second goal, I couldn’t see them ever coming back. “You’ve got to give him [manager, Buckland] credit, because Josh [Brown] and Sulli [Dan Sullivan] both scored and the three players coming on fresh, got the others starting to play at a good tempo. “If someone had said ‘would you take 7-0?’ we would have said yes, but then you get here and you think that maybe we could have had double figures. It’s been a decent afternoon and now there’s one more day to go, at home to Chichester City next week, April 25.” YM: Fox, Carden, Gathern, Crane, O’Carroll, Gedling (Hibbert 45), Dugdale, Evans (D. Sedlescombe Rangers U16 0 - 3 Horsham U16 Sussex Sunday Youth League Horsham went into this match knowing a win would give them the league title, even though their opponents and closest challengers had two games remaining. First half goals from Joe Kirkham and Matt Dale were added to in the second half by Adam Winkworth to complete a comprehensive and fully deserved victory and the title of league champions. Chesworth U12 1 – 1 Lingfield U12 Chesworth Rovers Youth U12 finished their second season together with a hard fought draw against Lingfield. It was a close affair with Chesworth needing a win to guarantee topping the league. The deadlock was broken in the second half with a goal from George P, but Lingfield were very resilient and earned a deserved equaliser five minutes from time to leave the final score 1-1. Chesworth U12 has finished the season as runners up in the HDYL ‘B’ Division. Next year, they will join the HDYL ‘A’ division at U13 level and move to an 11 a side format. With the team only in their second season together it’s a fantastic achievement to earn back to back promotions. The team are looking to strengthen the existing squad of players ahead of their move to the A league and the change to 11 a side. Anyone interested in joining should con-

tact the manager, Mark Powling on 07768 905997. Horsham Sparrows Sparrows Under 14 boys – The team hosted a strong Handcross and Lower Beeding team and lost 4-0, despite a man of the Match display from goalkeeper Tim W. Sparrows Under 13 Girls – The girls played their final game of the year at home to Cuckfield. After an even start Cuckfield took the lead but the girls dug in and responded well earning a penalty that was unfortunately saved. Cuckfield then scored a second goal at the start of the second half and the game looked to be slipping away until Emily scored a goal on the break. The girls quickly kicked off and when they earned a free-kick Olivia launched the ball forward and Alice ran on and kept her composure to equalise. There was just time to kick-off again before the ref blew the whistle. The performance may have been mixed but the girls showed great resilience to come back from missing a penalty and going 2 goals down and it was a fitting way to end the season. Sparrows Under 18 Girls – An unlucky game where sparrows dominated for long periods but couldn't take advantage with Abbey Rangers scoring twice before half time. The second half was again played predominately in Abbey half and Amber pulled a goal back, but as sparrows were pushing for an equaliser they were caught on the break and Abbey scored a third to secure the points

Horsham’s last home match of the season ended in similar fashion to many this season; a leaky defence resulting in a glut of goals and an inevitable defeat. Ramsgate did still have something to play for however as their Ryman League status is still in their own hands, unlike the Hornets who, apart from avoiding finishing rock bottom of the table, turned up already knowing their long stay at this level had already come to an end. Hornets’ goalkeeper Gareth Williams was voted the supporters player of the season by a massive margin which highlights just how much work needs be done by new manager Dom Di Paola in the close season, especially with the outfield defence. Williams was forced into action early on to save from the visitors Matt Adams header as Ramsgate saw an opportunity to take three vital points from the already relegated Horsham. Bailo Camara had a great chance to give Horsham the lead but shot wide with just the keeper to beat and then just two minutes later the miss was punished when the visitors scored the first goal, a fierce Joe Taylor volley

Champions elect Littlehampton Pulborough Bowl into show their class against Heath the new season Saturday April 18 - Sussex County League Div 1 Broadbridge Heath 0 - 3 Littlehampton Town Football Andrew Crisp – Broadbridge Heath FC Sometimes you just have to accept that the team you’re playing against are just better than you, and this was one of those occasions when the league leaders Littlehampton Town arrived at the Leisure Centre. Heath started well, Mark Bevan struck a fierce shot from 30 yards to test the handling of Towns’ keeper Jon Hendrick and Piers McDermott shot over the crossbar when well placed. The game continued to flow from end to end, Heath fullback Rob Godfrey tested Hendrick once more with a shot from distance and Pamment drove an effort just wide of Flack’s right hand post. On 30 minutes the visitors were

awarded a corner, the ball was played into the Heath penalty area and gathered with ease by Flack but the Referee had spotted an off the ball incident resulting in a yellow card for Attwater and a penalty for

Mark Bevan struck a fierce shot from 30 yards to test the handling of Towns’ keeper Jon Hendrick Littlehampton which George Landais gratefully accepted giving his team a half-time lead. Heath should have drawn level 10 minutes into the restart when Ollie Moore received the ball 12 yards from goal but the normally reliable midfielder put the chance over the crossbar. Two minutes later Heath were made to regret that miss when

a counter-attack saw Liam Humphries strike from distance parried by Flack and Joe Shelley following up, slammed in the rebound. Landais completed the scoring in the 62nd minute with a well executed shot from the edge of the penalty area. After the game Heath manager Steve Painter was not too downbeat, he said “We played quite well at times but the main difference was they took their chances. Even if Ollie had scored you just felt they would still have gone on to win the game. They’re (Littlehampton) the best team we’ve played all season, very strong going forward and in Joe Shelley they have the best player in the league, if they play as well next week at home to Newhaven then they will be champions.” Heath Team: E. Flack, Godfrey, Bevan, M Flack, Attwater (Balfour 75), Waddingham, Moore, Sebuliba, McDerrmott (McNab 68), Andrade (Lagrange 85), Sultan.

Bowls Jane Grey – Pulborough Bowls Club On Saturday April 18, with the warm Spring Sun on the green, the outdoor season started for PBC with the Opening Drive over four rinks and eighteen ends. The first bowl honours went to new Club President, and experienced player, Mick Ralph, who takes over the mantle from Len Adsett, now Vice President in support. After the winter cobwebs were dismissed, all the players got into their stride and found some of the form left behind last September. The teams skipped by Mick Ralph, Malcolm Gray, Ivan Salmon and Chris Etherington, came out on top, with Chris's team of just himself and Julie Day taking top rink honours with a score of 19/10 against tough opposition. The following day heralded the first club friendly of the season against Southgate Park from 2pm.

The game comprised of three competitive triples and a hotly contested home players rink, which included PBC's newest member, Alfie Knight. The unofficial top rink went to the friendly with Melvin Green, Mike Ayling and Alfie achieving the overall top score of any triple on the day, 24/8. Two of the three remaining triples saw victory, with Captain Paul day, Jan Barnes and Steve Adsett showing early good form to win 18/10, followed by a win of 18/15 to John Brown, Chris Etherington and John Piper. The final score was a hard fort victory to the home side of 52/42, a promising start to the summer season. Congratulations go to Ivan Salmon and John Brown, for their County successes with indoor bowls over the winter season and Ivan gaining his long sort-after County badge. Pulborough next play on Sunday April 26 at 2pm, away against Chichester in the Brookes Motors League (BML), spectators always welcome.
