Politics and Law students and teachers from Collyer’s were recently welcomed at the White House by Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States and Jenna, former president George W. Bush’s daughter. The pair surprised guests in the Old Family Dining Room, which is now open to the public for the first time in history. Three students from the Collyer’s group along with Helen Mayer-Dean, Head of Mercers’ House and Subject Leader for Law, and Sarah Hawen, Law teacher, shook hands and chatted with Michelle Obama and Jenna Bush, who kindly welcomed the first 150 visitors to
the opening. Michelle Obama told Law teacher Sarah Hawen: “It’s so nice to have you here. Surprise! What a good day to visit!” Helen and Sarah later said: “The First Law Ladies of Collyer’s had the privilege of meeting America’s First Lady! It was an exciting and unexpected honour. This was a memory making moment!” George Grammar Taylor, who studies A-level Law, said: “We waited 40 minutes in one of the White House rooms as security closed the doors. We did not expect at all for Michelle Obama to be there, I didn’t know what to do, I felt very under dressed!
News Benjamin Coren newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk
A-level Law student Claudia Sanchez-Ral also stated: “This is going to stay with us forever, not only shaking Mrs Obama’s hand and seeing the refurbished dining room but also being on national TV across 50 states!” Fellow Law student, Luke Rookwood, added: “I thought it was a privilege, she’s the most famous person I have met. It’s not every day you can say you’ve met Michelle Obama!” The students were hugely grateful to Senator John Boozman of Arkansas, Senator for the home state of Collyer’s Politics teacher, Nick Cowell, who made the visit to the White House possible.

Council urges residents to support HMV to close Horsham refusal to develop BBH greenfield site doors next month The proposed development site in Broadbridge Heath
Broadbridge Heath Parish Council
There was huge relief last June when Horsham District Council refused an application to develop 165 houses and a care home on countryside to the north of Broadbridge Heath Village. Developers had applied to build on green fields to the north of the present village boundary, a site that is the village residents’ closest accessible countryside, a highly valued environment especially popular for dog walkers and nature lovers and the last piece of green field land in the whole of Broadbridge Heath Parish, given that the West of Horsham and other developments are building on all the non-flood plain land to the south. The developers have appealed to have the decision overturned and a public hearing will be held in front of a planning inspector beginning at 10am on Wednesday, March 4.
Broadbridge Heath Parish Council will be attending the hearing to argue strongly that the refusal should be upheld, and would urge members of the public that can attend to do likewise. To demonstrate the depth of feeling, the Parish Council is asking for a show of local public support on Saturday, February 28, at 12pm. People can meet at the entrance to the land in question (at the junction
of Sleets and Old Guildford Roads, RH12 3NH), where a photograph of the attendance will be taken and used as evidence of the strength of local feeling against the development at the appeal. This relates to planning application (DC/13/2408) for 165 houses, a 60 bed care home and associated staff housing on land north of Old Guildford Road, Broadbridge Heath, West Sussex.
Serial arson attacks in Henfield Horsham Police are appealing for information after a series of arsons in the centre of Henfield. There have been eight reported small fires in Henfield since early November 2014 with the most recent being reported on February 16, 2015. The first incident occurred sometime between midnight and 7:50am on Saturday, November 1, where a wheelie bin was set on fire and completely destroyed outside Betfred in the High Street. A second fire, also reported on November 1, was starter after cones and cardboard were set alight in the car park at the rear of Barclays Bank. On November 15, a fire was reported in Caudle Street and on November 18, a notice board was set on fire at the bus shelter in the High Street. There were no reported fires in December however there have since been three fires where rubbish has been set alight in Henfield Library car park and another near a local hairdresser's. A bag of shoes left by some recycling bins was also set on fire Sussex Police are working alongside West Sussex Fire and Rescue
and PCSO Bryony Sparks said 'We believe these arsons are linked because they are so close in terms of location. We are really keen to hear from anyone who may have any information about these fires and are asking local residents to remain vigilant and report anyone acting
suspiciously in the area.' If you have any information about these incidents please email 101@ sussex.pnn.police.uk or call 101 quoting serial 215 of 16/02. Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

CCTV footage released of Broadbridge Heath shop robbers in action
Police have released CCTV footage of three men bursting into the One Stop Shop in Broadbridge Heath and robbing the staff. Shortly after 10pm on Sunday, January 18, the robbers struck at the One Stop shop in Billingshurst Road stealing a quantity of cash and cigarettes. As two women shopworkers were locking up to go home three men wearing dark clothing and with their faces covered burst through the door. The women, aged 46 and 32, were roughly pushed around by the intruders who ordered them to hand over several hundreds of pounds in cash and cigarettes.
The three men then fled, making off in a dark-coloured Peugeot car. Detective Sergeant Sian Harding said: "Although the women in the shop were not badly hurt this was a terrifying incident for them and we are determined to track down the offenders." Anyone who knows the robbers or who may have other information is asked to email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 1225 of 18/01 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. West Sussex staff begin Local ‘Dare to Care’ challenge residents Staff at the Sussex Community NHS Trust (SCT) have recently started their ‘Dare to Care’ challenge as part of the trust’s aim to deliver health services that care for the environment as well as people. Employees have been encouraged to sign up to help reduce waste and carbon emissions. Challenges can be as simple as printing double-sided, switching off lights or taking a walk during the workday. For those who are prepared to change their routine more significantly in the name of greener living, volunteers can also choose to take the bus to work instead of driving, buy a pot plant for their work space or even cut meat out their diet on Mondays. ‘Dare to Care’ is part of the trust’s sustainable healthcare strategy ‘Care Without Carbon’. It provides a way to cut costs, improve the well-
being of staff and patients as well as helping to reduce waste and emissions. Paula Head, chief executive at SCT, said: “As a responsible NHS trust, we want to encourage our dedicated staff to help us deliver healthcare in a greener and more environmentally responsible way. “By taking part in the Dare to Care challenge our staff can have some fun and work in a way that’s better for them, our patients, our community and the environment. “My dare is to reduce my car journeys and take more walks. I look forward to other staff joining me with their dares!” Staff (as well as patients) can take a dare at www.carewithoutcarbon. org and find some great tips for a greener lifestyle on top of news and updates on collective progress towards a greener NHS.

Margaret Gordon, John’s daughter, said: “It was wonderful to be able to hold a celebratory tea party for Dad at Sussexdown, the care home where he took on an unexpected new lease of life. The wonderful team of carers that looked after him deserve a medal, as do the activities team, along with the catering, housekeeping and administrative staff.” Heather Rogers, Home Manager at Care South’s Sussexdown care home, also stated: “It was wonderful to welcome John’s family into the home, to celebrate the life of such a remarkable man. Everybody here remembers John as a real gentleman and he was a very popular resident at the home. He had a great sense of humour and brightened up everyone’s day.” Whilst at Sussexdown, John was interviewed about his RAF days by an Imperial War Museum researcher, a recording of which is now stored in the Museum’s sound archives. John later worked and collaborated on a number of wellknown films, including ‘A Matter of Life and Death’ in 1946 and ‘The Red Shoes’ in 1948.

Multi-million pound West Sussex County Council freezes funding boost to create council tax for fifth year running hundreds of new school places across the county
H
undreds of new school places are to be created across West Sussex after the government announced a significant funding boost for the County Council. Just over £57 million is being provided following a review of school capacity. The County Council initially expected to receive £16,479,107 over the next couple of years, but recenty a capital grant allocation of £40,698,961 was announced, bringing the total amount of investment to £57,178,068 over the next three years. The extra allocations are specifically targeted at local authorities who are facing significant and unexpected increases in pupil numbers. The funding will support the provision of additional school places across all of the county. Jeremy Hunt, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, stated: “We are extremely pleased to see that the Department for Education (DfE) has recognised some of the chal-
lenges ahead for counties facing a growth in pupil numbers. “This funding will provide much needed capital resources to enable the provision of extra school places over the next three years. The additional money will allow us to plan ahead and make good investment decisions on how to provide the facilities we need for our children in the future. “At this stage, the exact details of how the money will be spent have yet to be finalised, but once we have all the information from the DfE we will be able to move forward with our planning for these extra places across the county.” The announcement has come not long after the news that Steyning Grammar School, Steyning, Pound Hill Junior, Crawley and Holy Trinity CE Secondary, Crawley were part of the 277 national schools that will have at least one of their buildings or blocks rebuilt or refurbished in the 2015-20 period. as part of the Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP2). Further details about this work are expected later in the year.
For the fifth consecutive year, West Sussex County Council has agreed to freeze its share of the council tax bill. The decision means residents will continue to pay £1,161.99 for a Band D property for all county services. Councillors also approved more than £500 million pounds worth of investment, as well as 138 million capital investments. The Future West Sussex Plan, a blueprint for what the authority will deliver over the next four years, was also approved. Michael Brown, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “We are investing in our services to benefit residents, helping those who fall on hard times, and all whilst continuing to bear down on the burden of local taxation and coping with Government funding cuts. “This isn’t a budget about cuts, it’s a budget about investment for the future and it’s one that reflects prudent financial planning.” Key capital investment next year includes such plans as a £6.4 million investment in high-speed broadband across the county, £15 million in the Better Roads programme and a significant investment in infrastructure improvements. Louise Goldsmith, Leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “I tru-
ly believe this is a budget that supports the Council’s key priority areas of giving children the best start in life, supporting and growing our local economy and helping our older population to remain independent in later life at the same time as keeping as much money as we can in people’s pockets. “It’s also a budget that, despite
0330 222 7775
the savings we have to make, invests significantly in vital county council services at a time when they are greatly needed. We are in a good place to meet head on the challenges that the next few years will bring.” For more information, the West Sussex Plan can be read in full at www.westsussex.gov.uk.

Copsale Hall host annual Billingshurst primary school set up Bird Box Building event tea dance for local elderly residents The annual Bird Box Building event recently took place on Sunday, February 15, at Copsale Hall, Copsale. Participants came together to work on new bird boxes for their own gardens to help give more of the local wildlife suitable shelter. E v e r y person who took part was given kits containing all necessary tools, equipment and materials which were pieced and nailed together to make the birds new homes. Once their boxes had been completed, many rewarded themselves with a bacon butty and a hot drink before taking away their of their labour to hang in their gardens. Organisers extended their grateful thanks to local timber merchants Wenban-Smith, who gen-
erously donated all of the wood used for the occasion. Copsale Hall has served the community for over 100 years and has a very rich local history. First being used as a venue for workers to play football and cricket, it was later used as a working men’s club and was even temporarily used by the Armed Forces as a canteen for stationed Canadian troops during World War II. After the war, management was taken over by a local committee who organised a variety of activities including whist drives, socials and jumble sales. This an annual event which has been enjoyed by all ages from toddlers through to grandparents for many years. Be sure to keep an eye out for next year’s delve into local woodwork.
Billingshurst Primary School’s Year 6 pupils have conducted a World War II themed tea party for local elderly residents, some of whom lived through the war as children. The class has recently been studying the World Wars, with the idea for the event coming after they took a detailed look at the politics and social history of the period. Guests were invited to an after-
noon of tea, cakes and entertainment provided by the students. Jengers Craft Bakery in Jengers Mead, Billingshurst, also donated an assortment of buns and pastries whilst the children put on a performance including a sing-along. Mark Sheath, the owner of Jengers Craft Bakery, commented: “We were honoured to be involved in this event and play some part in helping the pupils to learn, under-
stand and mark the Second World War with our local residents. “It was a thoroughly entertaining afternoon with lots of singing and a nostalgic look-back at traditional tea dances.” Throughout the event, the children spoke to their guests about their memories of the War, providing an invaluable opportunity to hear from those with first-hand experience.

Given a start-up grant - but little formal training - pushing a mower does not a gardener make, but charging £12 an hr makes them very attractive propositions. Or there are those, that perhaps have proved less trustworthy around other people’s empty houses. (How does one tell?) I am not against rehabilitation, but I am told by a friend in the Leatherhead Police Service, gardening is a ‘good in’ to other illegal activities. The poor home-owner must be at a total loss to know who is who. So before the new ‘gardening season’ begins may I offer a simple word? My advice is to look for professional membership. If you want a proper gardener and not just a cleaner, choose one that is a member of an accredited body like the PGG. If you want a garden built, a landscape gardener should be accredited by BALI or LANTRA. For imagination and inspiration a garden designer should be a member of The Society of Garden Designers. If on the other hand, you just want tidy, then pick a name from a hat and hope for the best.

Open ended promises Local boys ‘go blue’ for charity Nik butler @loudmouthman
Over the next few weeks certain words will begin to appear with an abundance that would put the spring arrival of crocuses to shame. Pledges, Promises, Manifestos and Priorities will begin to take centre stage in the daily lexicon of conversation over who votes where and why. The cause of this deluge of ideals is the upcoming General Election and with it the almost necessary need for clear lines to be drawn over what it will mean to place your vote with certain parties or independents. Up until recently the usual process for political manifestos prior to polling day were party conventions at which ideas and values are discussed, shared and voted upon. The resultant dogma is then assembled into a collection of statements which will form a large portion of promises to be made by candidates and spokesmen. Every party will insist that this is an open democratic process. Open that is providing you have paid for membership and attended the approved meetings; one might ask if anyone might wander in off the street and take part in those discussions. Certainly for one party; ‘The Something New’ party this is exactly what is occurring. Their manifesto; their ideals and promises are constructed through debate and votes that are apparently not limited to party membership, conference attendance, or approved committee
meetings. In place of the traditional convention centre dialogue is an online presence available to anyone with an Internet connection; which presumably includes those publically available at public Libraries. OpenPolitics is termed as an experiment in creating a collaborative political manifesto. It is part of the driving force behind the idea that political party ideals should be formed through public opinion. You can see the Manifesto as it is edited online at https://github.com/openpolitics and you can contribute by joining Github which is also free and requires only an email address. This is the crowdsourcing of consensus and whilst it may not have the reach of reality TV with overly simplistic ‘dial now to vote’ concepts it encourages discourse and a level of transparency of decisions which are quite literally unseen in any other parties manifesto creations. Whilst I am not a member, nor am I standing to represent them in May, I feel that in light of our Districts need for transparency in decisions making processes we would do well to pay close attention to something whose promises are open.
Two local boys have dyed their hair blue in celebration of raising £350 for vulnerable families with young children. Nathan and Connor Turner of Southwater undertook the charity project as part of their home education, organised by their mother, Paula. The boys chose to raise money for Home-Start Crawley, Horsham and Mid-Sussex (CHAMS). The charity works with local families to help support issues such as neglect, illness, disability and bereavement. Commenting on her sons’ choice, Paula explained: “They liked the idea of a charity that supported local struggling families by sending a volunteer into the home.” Jaquie Thomas, the charity’s Fundraising Mangager, stated: “We
want to be able to meet the growing demand for our services, so support like this from our local community is vital. The amount that Nathan and Connor have raised will pay for three new volunteers to be fully trained, so they can help us reach even more families and children.” The boys’ project involved setting up a Lego-themed Minecraft server
which people were invited to join by making a donation. This was followed by a more traditional fundraising day at their home for friends and family. If you would like to find out more about Home-Start CHAMS and opportunities to support them, you can call 01293 416327 or visit www. homestartchams.org.uk.

The only way is up... or is it? In this months’ article our Business expert and Author, Janette Whitney, advises on how best to manage sales growth
Janette whitney
www.whitneyassocs.co.uk
There is an enduring claim that more businesses fail as an economy or market recovers, mainly because of fatal cash flow difficulties brought on by a sudden and signifi-
cant spike in sales. Businesses that accept cash or get payment up front may experience a boom, but for those that grant credit, a recovery can add extra strain to cash flow. A business experiencing a sudden growth in sales runs the risk of running out of cash if it is not managed properly. If management get distracted by sales and take their eye off cash flow, it may experience a se-
rious cash shortage while waiting for incoming revenue. Cash is king Don't wait and hope the money will come in. Maintain detailed cash flow forecasts, broken down into weeks, updated when actual sales and costs become apparent. Realistic cash flow forecasts will enable you to predict when cash will enter and leave your business so you can react

quickly if you see a possible problem ahead. A cash safety net is also advisable; especially as bank lending is not as readily available. But, even if your sales are growing, waste and inefficiency must not be allowed to add unnecessary cost. Businesses facing changing market conditions can benefit from revisiting their business plan, by setting new objectives and strategies. Staffing solutions It is also important to ensure you have enough staff to deal with a significant growth in sales. Your customer service may suffer if you don't have enough staff to cope with a rise in sales, and this will be key in exploiting a period of growth. Try to make your systems more efficient, using technology to free up people's time where possible. Small-business owners are notoriously guilty of trying to combine many roles, when outsourcing could enable them to concentrate on sales and customers. Think about outsourcing bookkeeping, payroll, IT or HR – this can be more cost-effective and you can take advantage of an expert's superior knowledge. Range of options If you need to take on more staff, carefully assess your likely needs and explore all the options. Temporary staff could provide a short-term

answer while you plan for longerterm staffing; depending on if you continue to see growth in your business. Alternatively employ a parttimer or a job-share with two parttime staff fulfilling one full-time role. This gives you the flexibility to increase their hours if necessary. Whether you bring in new people or give existing team members new responsibilities, proper training and supervision is essential. Don't forget about existing staff, who may have worked hard to keep your business afloat during tough times and might not have had a pay rise for some time. Following the successful event last March, the CAMRA North Sussex Equinox Beer & Cider Festival returns to the Drill Hall in Horsham, March 28-29. To add some extra spice this year, two special beers have been brewed for the event by the North Sussex branch members, with the girls challenging the boys. The girls chose to celebrate the arrival of Spring with a light beer, and have come up with Tempus Fugit, a classic light, hoppy beer that is currently so popular. The boys, meanwhile, have gone darker and heavier with a warming Winter ale called Smokin’Choc Porter, infused with chilli and chocolate. North Sussex branch members have offered their thanks to the Kissingate Brewery and King Beer for their help with the brewing. Which beer will be more popular, and which team will ending up with the bragging rights? The beer list will have over 50
beers, with a healthy mix of winter and spring ales available CAMRA will be providing an excellent line up of local music for the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon sessions. Session are on Saturday 12pm4pm, and 6pm-10pm, then Sunday 12pm-4pm. Tickets cost £6 for Saturday and £4 fpr Sunday, and include a souvenir glass, plus a free pint for card-carrying CAMRA members. Bring out the Bucks Fizz More than thirty years after they stormed charts across the globe with a string of hits, Cheryl, Mike and Jay will be at the Capitol Theatre, Horsham, on Friday, 22 May, as part of their latest tour. The band are once again set to play across the world with a 70-date World Tour, to remind everyone that there is more to Cheryl, Mike & Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz than just ‘Making Your Mind Up’. Despite the fact that Bobby will not be attending, Cheryl believes that this will not be an issue, stating: “Having performed several gigs with our friend Stephen Fox, Mike, Jay and I realised that people expect to see four on stage when they see Fizz, so we are delighted to introduce Bobby McVay as our guest singer for the tour.” Bandmate Jay agreed, adding: “As a four

piece, the songs will be heard as they were intended to be heard, with four voices rather than three and the dance routines will have the full effect again.” With an album of new studio material and single releases in the pipeline, the future is looking extremely
bright for Cheryl, Mike & Jay formerly of Bucks Fizz. The prospects are bubbling over as Cheryl excitedly declares: “New representation, new tour, new singer, new merchandise, maybe a new album... A new beginning! Whoop whoop!” Like a good champagne, their performances have matured, and they still manage to hold all the fun, vitality and passion for performance of the record breaking tours of the 1980’s. The event will take place on Friday, 22 May, at the Capitol Theatre, Horsham. To book tickets, please ring 01403 750220 or visit www. thecapitolhorsham. com.
Awna Teixeira takes the stage at The Hawth Studio On Thursday, March 26, The Hawth Studio, Crawley, will proudly be welcoming Portuguese-Canadian multi-instrumentalist Awna Teixeira to the district. Awna began her musical career in 2001 performing all over North America and writing songs with a variety of bands before joining Po’Girl, one of Canada’s h a r d e s t working international touring acts, back in 2005. Over the course of her time with Po’Girl, she spent her time on creating five albums and seven years of solid touring in 15 different countries, playing between 200 and 250 shows a year. During this period, Awna also released her first solo album, ‘Where the Darkness Goes’ in 2012, her EP ‘Thunderbird’ in 2013 and is now releasing her second solo album, ‘Wild One’, and bringing the tracks from the album to The Hawth Stu-
dio. On her solo tour of the UK and Netherlands, Awna received amazing five-star reviews and was called the next “undisputed Queen of Roots Music.” With her fantastic song-writing ability and compelling stage presence, Awna has been likened to such legends as Emmylou Harris and Dolly Parton. G i v i n g her performance top honours in their review, American Roots UK wrote: “It is safe to say there is no one else quite like Awna, with her quirky take on roots music that combines highlonesome ‘hillbilly’ music with folk and probably more than a nod to her Portuguese roots, the only addition that can really explain this unique rootsy amalgamate of beautiful sounds.” Tickets: £15. To book your tickets call The Hawth Box Office on 01293 553636 or visit www.hawth. co.uk.

SECRET LOVE 8 March 7.30pm To celebrate the 90th Birthday of the Hollywood icon Doris Day, acclaimed jazz singer and West End actress Claudia Morris performs with this critically acclaimed show dedicated to her idol. This summer a sensational new musical is set to showcase the greatest hit songs of the 60s. Since its premiere in Bromley in 2009, Dreamboats and Petticoats has become a musical phenomenon, having played to more than two million people across the UK. After the original performance, inspired by Universal’s multi-million selling album series, found
such great success, the creative team have once again reunited for the sequel. It’s 1963, and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura’s single ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats’ is only half a hit. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss and parenthood, with Ray and Donna seemingly blissfully happy. Dreamboats and Miniskirts is written by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran, the team behind Goodnight Sweetheart, Birds of a Feather, The New Statesman, Shine on Harvey Moon, Save the Last Dance

Once again he’s blending new compositions, including Stepping Stone, Life’s Too Short and the first single That’s All That Matters To Me,
with hand-picked covers of such soul and pop gems as If Loving You Is Wrong, Losing You and three songs recorded by one of Paul’s musical heroes, Ray Charles. More frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for spending more time in the garden. Its time to get busy transplanting your seeds, planting summer bulbs and vegetable plants and a general tidy up around the garden. Now the days are getting dryer and temperatures are gradually increasing, open up the greenhouse and conservatory doors - let in the fresh spring air and allow to circulate!
Continue to deadhead winterflowering bedding plants such as pansies and cyclamen. Pansies in particular will carry on to produce flowers in the spring if attended to frequently.
If you are itching to get in the greenhouse and have an abundance of ideas for adding colour to your borders this year, now is the time to sow hardy annuals. In mild areas you can sow directly outside, but for best results and to protect from the odd lingering frost, sow indoors into pots or modules for trans-planting later.
For those of you who are lucky not to have had your Daffodils pop up before the spring with the mild spells we have experienced, exploit their bold displays while they last! As they fade, deadhead the flowers but allow the foliage to die down naturally. This builds up the nutrition stores in the bulb for the following year.
Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. If you don’t have a warm, sunny wall for them to grow up, plant out in pots. Remember to provide plenty of support for them grow up as they can get a little out of hand as they start to grow!
Keep on top of weeding of young seedlings that appear in the borders. Pesky bugs such as aphids and scale can multiply rapidly during mild spells. Remove infestations early by hand to prevent the problem escalating. Downy mildew and black spot on perennials and bedding plants can be a problem this time of year so remove any infected leaves and destroy badly affected plants to reduce the risk of it transporting. Enjoy the spring for the abundance of colourful bulbs and bright blue skies that it brings, with fresh growth and plenty more colour to look forward to in the weeks ahead.
With warmer temperatures comes the arrival of weeds and pests to the garden.
If you have not already done so, now is the time to cut back ornamental grasses and other perennials that were left for winter interest growth. However be careful of the spring bulbs around in your borders when doing so!

Design Principles from Jack
Get involved with our Garden Design Competition
It is always an exciting challenge to be tasked with creating designs and coming up with inspirational ideas for gardens of all shapes and sizes. Whatever the style of a plot, there are important factors which determine how it works as an environment, and fundamentally as a design; and these elements are known as design principles. One of the most useful and important of all design elements are the use of lines. Whether they’re curved, straight, horizontal or vertical, strong lines can draw your eye into the landscape, directing where one looks and where they go. Strong lines are softened by the use of plants, but noticeably there has been a trend for the bold, impactful and contemporary feel for demand of gardens of recent.
We are giving our readers and all you green-fingered gardeners an opportunity to show off your own design flair this summer with our garden design competition. Send us a clear picture of your garden, and which category best describes its style from our list. Provide a brief description of what you have implemented into your outside space and what you love about spending time in your horticultural seclude.
A successful garden combines lots of textures, often to achieve repetition, contrast, balance and unity. The textural appeal of plants is found in their leaves and often evoke sensual responses as an invitation for us to touch and feel.
The closing date for entries is Friday 18th August 2015 and a winner will be chosen by Jack Dunckley on Friday 14th September 2015.
Smooth, bold Hostas paired with ornamental Hakonechloa grasses with their finer wisps of leaves make a classic combination I feel.
The lucky winner will receive a complimentary site visit from Jack and two free sessions of garden maintenance to tidy your garden for the Autumn, worth £300.00, carried out by our landscaping team.
Form is a very important element in a garden and without it, the whole ambiance can become confusing and nonchalant. The shape of plants and other objects in the garden work by grouping these together in displays in order to divide space, enclose areas and provide architectural interest.
Choose one of the following categories that best describes your garden
Trained, rounded forms such as Box (Buxus sempervirens) or evergreen shrubs (Taxus baccata, Elaeagnus x ebbingeii) add definition and stability to a mixed border. Repeated, narrow verticals of flowering perennials (Digitalis purpurea ‘Alba’ / Verbena bonariensis) also add stability above the undulating rhythm of the mounded forms beneath and behind.
Shade Garden Themed Garden Traditional Garden
Semi-small trees also achieve this effect, Betula utilis ‘Jaquemontii’ and Photinia ‘Red Robin’ being my particular favourite to draws the eye up, making use of the external space above.
Modern / Contemporary Small garden / best efficient use of space
Scale or proportion is the size relationship of one object to another. A large specimen tree will look out of place in the middle of a small patio. Always consider the ultimate size of a tree and any plant before planting, for in the long term, it can not only disrupt the environment it’s been given, it will look out of place and unsightly and become more hassle than its worth.
Inventive idea for
attracting wildlife

quiries for estate agents about their clients properties. In fact Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents received a number of enquiries within a day of the portal launching. Not all agents advertise with OnTheMarket.com which features a unique set of listings which cannot be found elsewhere. Some agents feel alternative sites offer more enquiries. However, some of these sites offer a great deal of information which may not help sellers maximise
their selling price. Neil Moore is very excited about the Onthemarket.com portal with its fantastic design that focuses purely on the properties. He comments, ‘The property search at OnTheMarket.com is slick, simple, fast and state of the art, compatible with the latest technologies.’ He continues, ‘The website adapts seamlessly to fit any device being used to view it. There is no clutter from irritating distracting third party adverts, nor
any spam email’. The On the market portal has a clean uncluttered design with full descriptions of the homes, the pictures are large and there is no ancillary advertising as all that really matters is the sale of clients houses. Neil Moore advises ‘take a look at Onthemarket. com, it might just make you decide to go ‘on the market’ For more information, please contact Neil Moore at neilmoore@ guyleonard.co.uk
Are you on the market? Neil Moore Managing Director, Guy Leonard & Co Many readers may well have walked past their local estate agents windows and seen them covered in red and blue targets. This is not for target practice but the logo for a new property portal called ‘Onthemarket.com’. Every property at the OnTheMarket.com is marketed by a locally based estate agent as the portal knows the majority of the public recognise the benefits of having a local professional in place who can manage the sales process on their behalf. Also, there is no substitute for their
detailed knowledge of a property, the local area, current market conditions and the client’s personal circumstances. Neil Moore, MD at Guy Leonard & Co Estate Agents believes OnTheMarket.com will be a major player in the portal market ‘because it provides a clean, crisp and simple search function and a highly effective platform for our vendor and landlord clients. It is a great place to launch new properties to the market.’ With the news the new Onthemarket.com portal has now had over a million visitors within only a few weeks of being launched it clearly seems like an excellent source of en-

In the 30 years that Leaders Limited has been successfully letting and selling homes, the way in which properties are marketed has changed many times - from the days when tenants and buyers would actively scan the newspapers to modern methods, which include social media marketing and property portals. The latter is currently the most popular way for tenants and buyers to search for properties and as a result Leaders invests a huge amount in ensuring that our landlords’ and vendors’ properties are highly visible on the UK’s largest portals, as well as the additional advertising on our popular website and via several social media channels. As with so many things the landscape in the world of the portals is forever evolving and the most recent change is that a new property portal called OnTheMarket has just launched. This portal has been set up by agents for agents – essentially to provide a cheaper way to market properties on behalf of landlords and sellers. One of the stipulations of advertising with OnTheMarket is
that agents can only advertise their clients’ properties on one other portal – essentially meaning that they would have to cease marketing on either Rightmove the UK’s largest and most popular portal - or Zoopla – the UK’s second largest and most popular property website. What is important for us is that we have our clients’ properties advertised where tenants and buyers are looking, and with many years of brand building, advertising and success behind them, for the time being that means Rightmove and Zoopla. It is for this reason that Leaders will be continuing to invest in both of these portals. We want our clients’ properties to reach as many people as possible and this is far more important than finding cheaper advertising to improve our profit. Our clients are the most important element of our business, so we want to ensure we have their properties where it matters. We will of course continue to monitor the market, and if the landscape changes and our clients would be better served by us reconsidering the portals we work with to we will do just that. For more information about buying, selling, renting or letting with Leaders in the Horsham and surrounding area contact 01403 217585 or www.leaders.co.uk.

Horsham hustle through to third League leaders punish battling Horsham Hockey
Martin Read – Sports Reporter
Saturday February 21 South League Premier Division 2 Horsham Men’s 1st XI 4 - 2 Tulse Hill & Dulwich Leading 3-0 at half time YM took their foot off the pedal in the second half and it nearly cost them dear as Eastbourne Town came back at them with two second half goals. YM went ahead in the first minute through striker Sam Schaff and when six minutes later Josh Brown added a second thought must have turned to matching the seven goals YM hit in their last match against Selsey. Eastbourne Town
are by no means lightweights in front of goal however, scoring twelve goals themselves in their last two matches, so there was always danger for YM of conceding. Midfielder Anthony Hibbert scored his teams third on thirty seven minutes and that is how the teams went in at the break. In a repeat of YM’s early first half goal, Dan Smith pulled one back for Eastbourne within a minute of the restart and a possible come back was on for the home side. Six minutes later Town scored again, this time through defender Ross Sutton to bring the score to 2-3. With forty minutes remaining there would have been short odds on more goals but both sides had exhausted their scoring efforts and YM came away from the south coast with three good points against a team that sit fourth in the table. YM are at home to mid table Arundel tomorrow (Saturday 28).

Saturday February 21 – Women’s Conference East East Grinstead 5 - 2 Horsham Ladies 1st XI Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter Fighting to avoid the playoffs and the threat of relegation bottom placed Horsham had the misfortune to visit high flying unbeaten East Grinstead but although there was no gain for Horsham there was no shame either. In their 14 league games this season East Grinstead have only conceded a miserly 11 goals, three of which have been scored by Horsham in their two contests. The hosts went two nil ahead from early goals and then added an-

Anchors coast home against Borough Saturday February 21 - London 3 South East League Gillingham Anchorians 48 13 Pulborough Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter
p
After beating Gillingham at home earlier in the season Pulborough had hopes of doing the double against the Kent side but came away disappointed, despite being well in contention at half time with the hosts leading 13-8 but with Boro
having the benefit of the second half slope. However, a disastrous 20 minute session after the break took the game away from Boro. Brothers Dan and Ollie Page scored unconverted tries and Simon Burfiend converted a penalty but that was no match for rampaging Gillingham. Team Manager Roger Hunt said: “We don’t seem to travel very well! They’re a heavy side and kept battering us – we knew they would so our game plan was to keep our distance but we didn’t stick to that. We had a new hooker and colts in – one of whom requires plastic surgery on
a boot inflicted facial injury. It was frustrating because when we finally woke up in the last ten minutes we ran rings round Gillingham, but by that time it was far too late.” With Lewes marooned at the bottom of the table on five points and Hastings & Bexhill 11th on ten Boro, 9th, with 29 appear safe but another win should confirm their continuation in the London SE3 league. Tomorrow (Saturday 28), when they expect to be stronger, Borough entertain Old Dunstonians to whom they lost narrowly in November, denied by a penalty in the dying seconds.
other before Steph Dent pulled one back just before half time. Grinstead scored twice more in the second half until Suzy Clapp reduced the deficit towards the end of the game. Horsham captain Hannah Simpson told the District Post: “We always knew that this was going to be hard work because they’re a very good team and deserve to be where they are – their results prove that. But we fought well and had good passages of play in phases. We can’t rely on other teams to produce favourable results for us so we’ll be doing everything we can to earn the points we need to stay up.” Tomorrow (Saturday 28) Horsham travel to fifth in the table Wimbledon, having narrowly lost to them at home in October. Wimbledon beat Bedford 2-1 last week.
Young Lions show character to defeat Ditchling Saturday February 21 – Sussex Intermediate League Horsham Lions 22 – 3 Ditchling Rugby Dave Smith - Sports Editor
A youthful Lions side defeated an experienced Ditchling side 22-3 at home to move back to third in the league and with seven of the side being made up of last year’s Colts team it showed that Horsham has a bright future. Ditchling took the lead in the opening five minutes after the Lions conceded a penalty at the breakdown, the Ditchling fly half converted it to give his side a 3-0 lead. The Lions were immediately level from a penalty of their own with fly half Josh Chalk kicking the points to level the scores. Just before the break Lions went into the lead after some powerful play from Richard Henderson allowed Downey to outsprint the Ditchling
defence and score in the corner to give the Lions an 8-3 half time lead. Horsham came out with increased intensity in the second period immediately driving the opposition back into their own 22. Following a collapsed scrum a disagreement between the packs led to a number of punches being thrown which resulted in Lions losing Kyle Fairs to the bin while Ditchling lost their prop to the bin. Lions extended their lead when man of the match Joe Emson burst through two tackles to score his first try of the game, followed a while later with his second, scored in similar fashion to his first. The try was converted by Chalk to complete the scoring. There was time for Carl Harman to be shown a yellow card after his reaction to the Ditchling prop’s punch to a Lions player, the Ditchling player amazingly escaped punishment. With a man light Lions saw out the remainder of the game for a good win.

Hornets look to have burnt their Bridges football
Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Saturday February 21 - Ryman League Division One South Horsham 3 – 4 Three Bridges The largest attendance at Gorings Mead this season failed to inspire Horsham against a side that if they are to avoid relegation they simply had to beat. One of the Hornets best and most consistent performers, Tony Nwachukwu, was suspended so his absence from the starting line up could not be avoided. But just why another of Horsham’s reliable few, keeper Gareth Williams, was left out in favour of Mark Zawadsk was a mystery and seemed a bizarre decision in such an important match. Another new face, Luiz Felipe Lire De Andrade, made the starting line up along with Joe Obersteller and Tom Hughes, these three replacing Jack Page, Jacob Peake and Ehis Izokun. In a match that contained seven goals, two penalties and a sending office there was plenty of incidents however it took two late goals to give any sort of respectability to the scoreline for Horsham. The first period of play set the standard, scrappy and unimaginative, but it was no surprise that first blood went to the visitors just shy of
twenty minutes. An awful kick from keeper Zawadski enabled the visitors to quickly play in striker Tony Garrod who despite slipping as he shot could not miss the open goal left by Zawadski’s error. Bridges were well on top at this stage and Horsham just could not get going which resulted in the visitors doubling their lead six minutes later. Overlapping full back Williams Peauroux crossed into the box where the unmarked Hakeem Adelakun slotted the ball home at the far post. Horsham did create something, Gregg Berry put Trevor McCreadie through but the Hornets strikers’ weak effort was easily cleared then Gregg Berry did have the ball in the net but he was way offside leaving the visitors with a fairly comfortable two goal advantage at the break. Three Bridges came out determined to add to the score and immediately put pressure on the home goal with Adelakun and Tait going close. The game had a niggly air to it with play often broken up by free kicks and it was from a foul that Horsham were thrown a lifeline. Tom Hughes attempts to get to a Tom Vickers free kick were stopped by a foul in the box which referee Fisher deemed as a penalty. In the absence of Nwachukwu McCreadie stepped up to score and give the Hornets an unlikely way back into the match. Substitute Bailo Camara, who had replaced Lockyer, added a spark to the previously lacklustre Hornets and the opportunity to equalise came, and went, a number of times as Horsham finally started to put
some passages of play together. However it was the visitors who scored next and in doing so effectively secured the three points. Lee Carney's free-kick was volleyed through the hands of Zawadski by Sam MacVicar who was not picked up at all. Six minutes later another volley, this time from Allan Tait, made it four to Three Bridges which left the performances and positivity of Storey and Cant’s initial matches seem a distant past. More bookings continued from the over fussy referee and it was from an eighty–ninth minute foul by Peauroux that allowed Tom Hughes to hammer in the free kick to make it 2-4. Deep into the five minutes of stoppage time Bridges Martin Dynan dragged down De Andrade earning himself a second yellow card and earning Horsham a second penalty. McCreadie again comfortably converted the penalty, it was however too little too late and another poor home defeat now leaves Horsham with a mountain to climb. Tomorrow, Saturday 28, Horsham travel to the Kent coast to play promotion chasing Folkestone Invicta who won 0-3 at Goring’s Mead in October. With points unlikely from this fixture time is running out on the Hornets Ryman League future. Goalscorers: Horsham: McCreadie (pen 51, pen 90+4), Hughes (89). Three Bridges: Garrod (19) Adelakun (25) MacVicar (81), Tait (87). Horsham Team: Zawadski, Obersteller, Hope, Byrne, Hughes, Welch, De Andrade, Vickers, McCreadie, Lockyer (Camara 51) Berry (Otobo 72) Unused Subs: Page, Branford, Williams.
Heath climb table after beating East Preston Saturday February 21 Sussex County League Div 1 Broadbridge Heath 1 - 0 East Preston Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor Heath manager Steve Painter was delighted with his team’s performance against the reigning League Champions, a result which sees The Bears move into the top half of the table for the first time since mid-September. The visitors started well and Heath keeper Michael Chester was forced to make a full length save from a long range Shaun Charles shot before minutes later Preston’s Richard Greenfield fired wide when he should have given his side the lead. At the other end Ollie Moore came close to breaking the deadlock with
a left foot shot that went just wide of the East Preston post. Heath started to come more into the match and were very unlucky not to go in front when striker Jake Holmes shot against the bar following a Piers McDermott long throw in. Another McDermott throw caused chaos in the visitor’s area with the ball bobbing around before a hacked clearance denied Heath a chance to score. Heath were well on top now and looking comfortable. The woodwork was struck again, this time from a Dan Attwater header from a corner that cannoned off the post. Then with a half hour gone Heath got the goal their play had deserved. Moore played a short pass to Tiago Andrade who returned the ball into the path of the Heath midfield player who hammered a first time shot into the bottom corner of the net. As with the first half East Preston started the second period well,
going close on a few occasions but Heath should have wrapped it up on 55 minutes when the normally deadly Ollie Moore put the ball over when presented with a open goal five yards out. Midway through the half Kieron Greig came off the bench to make a welcome return from injury and he got in the action immediately heading a McDermott right wing cross just over the bar. Heath continued to create opportunities and saw out the match with comparative ease. This was another good win for Heath following their promotion last year and they now sit twelfth in the table. Manager Steve Painter’s main aim would have been to survive this season and he probably would have taken fourth bottom before the season started. A top half finish must be the new aim now and given the injuries to key players that would cap a very good season.

Horsham Hawks’ Magnificent Seven Horsham Hawks U11 67 – 65 Worthing D&D U11 Junior Basketball Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Despite only having seven players the Under 11 Hawks came away from Worthing victorious after winning this first leg cup game 67 – 65. H a w k s got off to a quick start winning the first quarter 14 – 9 but despite several successful fast breaks and great ball movement, Hawks lost the second quarter 15 –16. Hawks started the second half strongly looking to build on their four point lead they held from the first half. Continuous strong rebounding, defending and organised team play kept the Hawks scoring resulting in a further 24
points being added to their score. Being short of player’s stamina in the last quarter was going to be an issue and the Hawks knew they were in for a tough final period. They battled hard and managed to add a further twelve points but Worthing grabbed an equaliser in the last few minutes of the game. Just when it looked like finishing a draw a great assist from Miguel Venturini to Joshua Tavolieri resulted in the winning basket making the final score 67 – 65 to the Hawks. Next up for the Hawks is another tournament followed by a second leg cup game against Worthing D&D. Hawks scorers: Joshua Tavolieri – 44, Miguel Venturini – 13, Henry Buttler – 6, Matthew Campbell – 4, Rachel Maclean, Oliver Ashby, Zach Holden – 0.

Green & Whites are a win away from promotion
Horsham now need one win for promotion

orsham emerged victorious in this battle between the tightest two defences in the league. Neither side were at full strength with Horsham missing powerful back row Michael Tredgett, while absent for Bromley were two leading try scorers, David Banfield in the forwards and James Powell on the wing. The Green and Whites now have a twenty two point lead over third
placed Bromley and one more win from their final five games will ensure promotion to London 2 South East. In the first minute, Horsham sliced open the opposition with a searing break from full back Will Bell but the Bromley defence was equal to the task. The game increasingly became a battle of Horsham’s attack against Bromley’s defence and it was fifteen minutes before the home side even entered the Green and White’s half. Horsham were going through the phases and putting their attacking patterns into play but line breaks were at a premium due to the quality and suffocating nature of the home defence. When Jamie Gibbs did make a break, the support was not there
In a tight match a Johnson penalty decided it
quite quick enough to convert the opportunity however the attacking position had been created and when on 24 minutes Bromley strayed offside, Tom Johnson slotted the penalty from 25 yards for what became the only score of the match. Sean Tuhakaraina in particular was making some great tackles to stave off Bromley attacks in the second half but Horsham still had the majority of possession without ever really looking like scoring a try. Bell made another great break to open up the defence but the attack came to nought and then when Johnson had the penalty opportunity to extend Horsham’s lead the kick was missed. Horsham carried on trying to pick and go in the face of a determined Bromley defence and as the
clock ticked down, the game was on knife edge with the possibility of a Bromley interception or breakaway. The away support were finally relieved to hear the final whistle for a game in which they were well deserved victors but the result was in doubt until the end. Horsham coach Nick Stocker was delighted with the result but the score line was a first for him. “Not only was this a total shut out, and we failed to score a try but I have never been involved in a 3-0 score line before! We dominated the set piece, territory and field position but both teams have the best defensive records in the league and good defensive structures. I thought Paul Talbot and Giles Barber in the front row were ex-
cellent, and Liam Brady did a good job when he came on. Matt Stone’s throwing was good and the back row were their usual effervescent selves with Richard Tredgett carrying well. Jamie Gibbs should be mentioned for the threat he carries with his lines of running but my man of the match goes to Will Bell who caught well, kicked well and made several clean breaks.” Horsham’s next game is at home to Folkestone tomorrow, February 28, who won comfortably at Coolhurst last season. Horsham: Bell, Mills (Price 47), Gibbs, Ordidge, Fuller; Johnson, Rush; Talbot (capt) (Brady 60), Stone, Barber; Green, Goward (Whiting 51); Tuhakaraina, Thompson, Tredgett.

Thousands of runners took part in the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon 2015 last Sunday, February 22, in what was the iconic events milestone 25th anniversary. A field made up of a mixture of elite and charity runners competed over the colourful 13.1 mile course that took them past many of Brighton’s landmark sites, cheered all the way by the large enthusiastic crowd. Of the 7675 finishers Horsham Joggers Neil Boniface came in fourth in a time of 01:09:04, but he believed that if he had been fully well he could have done better. Neil told The District Post, “I found the race quite hard as I was isolated early on which meant I had to run solo for ten miles, I was really pleased to finish fourth out

Leading 3-0 at half time YM took their foot off the pedal in the second half and it nearly cost them dear as Eastbourne Town came back at them with two second half goals. YM went ahead in the first minute through striker Sam Schaff and when six minutes later Josh Brown added a second thought must have turned to matching the seven goals YM hit in their last match against Selsey. goals themselves in their last two matches, so there was always danger for YM of conceding. With forty minutes remaining there would have been short odds on more goals being scored but both sides had exhausted their scoring efforts and YM came away from the south coast with three good points against a team that sit fourth in the table. YM are at home to mid table Arundel tomorrow (Saturday 28).
