Piazza Italia festival returns to Horsham Horsham’s annual Italian festival is back this easter and this year it’s starting earlier than ever. Due to high demand the supercars will be arriving in Horsham Town Centre earlier, giving you more time during the day to see them in all of their Italian glory! On Good Friday the Ferrari catwalk is starting at 10am on the Carfax and will give you a chance to see some of the world’s most stylish cars close up and in motion with a running commentary describing each car with loving detail. No other event lets you get as close to some of the world’s most expensive cars. Piazza Italia is not just about cars, it’s about bikes too! Good Friday will see a drive through of over 200 superbikes at 12.15pm with a no barriers static display at the Bishopric afterwards. Also on Good Friday on the Carfax, there will be a display of classic supercars from Addspeed for those who prefer the classic car stylings, an Abarth display for those who prefer smaller cars with a lot of punch and long-time sponsors Lifestyle Mazda will be there with an extensive display of their latest models. Easter Saturday is all about Minis! This year ItalianJob.com is bringing over 40 classic Minis parading through Horsham town centre at 10.30am and then driving down to display at the Bishopric for the rest of the day. Mix this with the roam-

ing Italian Job gang street theatre players and there is bound to be trouble. Also on Easter Saturday Broadbridge Heath Garage and The Children’s Trust are bringing a top of the line selection of supercars to display on East Street and Market Square, with the chance to gain tickets to race on the Top Gear track. Easter Monday is bringing the extreme stylings and noise of the Italian manufacturer Lamborghini to Horsham Town Centre. A range of Lamborghinis will be strutting their stuff with a Carfax Parade at 10am then moving on to the Forum from 10.30am. Easter Monday will see the return of the now famous Bullseye Scooter Club arriving at 10.45 on the Carfax. Displaying their Italian scooters around the bandstand for all to see. Horsham town centre will also have more displays from Washington Coachworks with their amazing range of supercars, classic Alfa Romeos and Fiat Coupes on the Carfax. There will also be displays of the famous classic Fiat 500s on East Street. Piazza Italia 9 features over 500 vehicles displayed throughout Horsham town centre over the 3 days of the festival. No other Italian festival allows visitors to get so up close and personal with the world’s most luxurious cars. The event takes place over the Easter weekend on Good Friday 3, Saturday 4, and Easter Monday, April 6, 2015.

Six local campaign groups opposed to Gatwick expansion and four senior MPs called on the government today to recognise the devastating impact of a second runway at Gatwick, the lack of local political support and the strength of feeling among local residents against changes to flight paths already in and out of Gatwick. The anti-Gatwick groups representing individual residents, resident groups, Parish Councils, environmental organisations, and with the MPs, represent millions of residents in this joint statement to the Prime Minister. Rt Hon Francis Maude MP and
Cabinet member said of the visit to Downing Street by residents, which sadly he was unable to attend due to other commitments: "Since Gatwick started a trial of intense focusing of flight paths over rural areas in my constituency last year, I have been dealing with many hundreds of distressed constituents. Local residents who have for years tolerated moderate aircraft noise because it was spread out were horrified to find that the concentration of aircraft over a narrow flight path made their lives a misery. "It is hard to see how the area could accommodate the vast increase in noise and disturbance,
News Benjamin Coren newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk
together with doubling the usage on the already overburdened infrastructure, that a second runway at Gatwick would entail." The Downing Street visit organised by Sally Pavey, chair of CAGNE (Communities Against Gatwick Noise and Emissions) said: “We were delighted to be joined by so many senior MPs and to have the support of those that were unable to attend as it shows the anger that is felt over Gatwick’s proposals to expand and how people are already being affected by changes to flight paths now. “A two-runway Gatwick would devastate the local area and local communities.
“Throughout this process, we’ve been hugely disappointed with Gatwick’s lack of consultation with the local area. CEO Stewart Wingate continues to portray the airport as an ‘easy option’ for expansion, while ignoring the concerns of thousands of local residents and that it will cost the taxpayer billions in infrastructure bills and the devaluation of vast areas of the southeast with aircraft noise. “It’s time people realised the truth. Gatwick expansion will destroy our local environment, push local services beyond their limits and expose up to 30,000 people to noise for the very first time, all facts ignored by Gatwick’s CEO. “If Gatwick refuse to hear us, we hope the Prime Minister and those in government will.” Crispin Blunt MP and Chair of the MP group that opposes Gatwick expansion commented: "The unremitting noise pollution being suffered by residents underneath new concentrated flight paths at Gatwick (now), following the implementation of Precision Navigation in 2013-14, has galvanised local residents groups around Gatwick to stop take-off and landing routes that create unmitigated noise pollution to residents. “The united message being delivered to the Prime Minister today is that changes to Gatwick's implementation of Precision Navigation are needed urgently and the last thing local people need is a new runway at Gatwick which would subject thousands of new people to aircraft noise.”

Watch footage of a man so drunk after Ifield murder: Family crashing his car that he could not stand pay tribute to victim
Police footage shows how a man who crashed his car could not even stand when he was arrested. Robert Hutchinson was spotted by a member of the public driving his Nissan Almera erratically on the A281 heading towards Horsham at 5.45pm on Friday, January 30. As the witness phoned police to describe what he could see, Hutchinson veered off the road, overcorrected and crashed head on into a Ford Ka heading south on the road at Mannings Heath. The Ford span around and the Nissan ended up in bushes. The driver of the Ford, a 42-year-
Young girl hurt in Horsham collision Emergency services were called at 3.38pm on Monday, March 23, to a collision between a car and a four-year-old girl at the junction of Gilligan Close and Blackbridge Lane in Horsham. Guildford Road and Bishopric were closed while emergency services dealt with the incident. The car involved had left the scene and enquiries are being made to trace it. The girl was conscious at the scene. The air ambulance attended but she was taken to East Surrey Hospital by road ambulance from where initial reports suggest that she is not seriously injured. Anyone who saw what happened is urged to contact 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk or call 101, quoting serial 942 of 23/3. What do you think? Email newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk
old woman from Plummers Plain, suffered slight injuries. Hutchinson was not injured. When police arrived they found Hutchinson was still sitting behind the wheel. CCTV footage recorded inside Worthing custody centre shows how he fell off a chair and into a wall while waiting to be breathalysed. He was so drunk that an officer had to help him to his feet and hold him up to stop him falling down again. Hutchinson was found to have 169 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millitres of his breath - almost five times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes. The 59-year-old told police he had been drinking for several hours at home that afternoon but had de-
cided to go shopping for food and then crashed his car. He had already served a ban for drink-driving after being convicted in 2009 and did not have a driving licence. Hutchinson, of Fir Tree Close, Plummers Plain, pleaded guilty to drink-driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance when he appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court on 23 February. He was banned from driving for five years, given an 18-week prison sentence, told to do 300 hours of community service and ordered to pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge. Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas, from Surrey and Sussex roads policing unit, said: "The footage shows just how drunk Hutchinson was, yet he thought that it was acceptable for him to drive in that condition. "It is vital that we get people who think that it's ok to drink and drive off the roads. "We need the public's help to tell us whenever they see someone who could be drink-driving so that we can act before someone is seriously hurt or even killed." People in Sussex can text officers on 65999 with the details of people they suspect of drink or drug driving or visit www.operationcrackdown.co.uk. You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. To keep up to date with officers looking for drink drivers, follow #opdragonfly on Twitter. pain we as a family are in right now. "She was always there for us and was someone that always made us smile and laugh no matter what. "Janet was a very inspirational, passionate and caring person. Throughout her life she always cared deeply for her friends and family. "This tragic event has left a deep hole in the hearts of all that knew her. She will be deeply missed and always remembered for her energetic, fun, bubbly and vibrant personality. "We are overwhelmed with the love and support that we have received from Janet's friends worldwide. Janet would have been so happy knowing how much she was loved. "We will never forget our beautiful girl and will work with the police to establish her last movements and why she was taken from us so cruelly. We won't rest until we find the truth." Christopher Jeffrey-Shaw, 26, of Lakeside, Beckenham, London, has been charged with murdering Janet, a University of Brighton student from Eastbourne. Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact Sussex Police on 101 or email 101@sussex. pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Madeira or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 Pressline Newsdesk note: The photo of Janet was taken at her school in Berlin, Germany, in 2012.

Sainsbury’s Horsham Steyning Students ‘Get Funny raises £19,251 for Red for Money’ and raise £5092 Nose Day 2015
Sainsbury’s Horsham are celebrating after raising £19,251 for Comic Relief. Colleagues took part in a number of fundraising events during the week leading up to Red Nose Day, which took place on Friday, March 13. Activities included bucket collections at Littlehaven and Horsham Stations, colleagues challenging the public to the “Malteaser Chopstick Challenge”, balloons on sale from ‘Walking Pet Balloons’ of Broadbridge Heath.
Derek Boarer, Store Manager, said: “Our colleagues always go the extra mile for Red Nose Day, and this year was no exception. I’d like to thank all of our customers who donated or took part in the activities we held in store. It was a record year for Sainsbury’s and it’s brilliant to know we contributed to the impressive figure donated from Sainsbury’s to Comic Relief.” On the day, Sainsbury’s announced it raised £11.5 million with more funds yet to be collected.
The whole school became a sea of red as students and staff came in dressed to support this year’s Red Nose Day, Comic Relief fundraising campaign and raise as much money as possible. The Sixth Form College excelling once again organising loads of fun activities to raise money for this good cause, spurred on by the Governments commitment to double the amount raised by schools. The students creative genius was exploited as a variety of antics were dreamed up in a bid to create interesting and unusual opportunities for money to be raised including covering the entire Sixth Form College Centre in red spots. Sally Randall, Assistant Head and Director of Sixth Form College said: “Our students have been inspirational in doing something funny for money. Their positive mind-set and generosity of spirit as young people determined to help other young people less fortunate than they will have far reaching lifechanging consequences.” On Red Nose Day students arrived in school in some wacky red outfits in preparation for the catwalk fashion show. The winners deemed to be the best dressed red contestants were judged by a senior staff panel. Prizes for this were
donated by local business in Steyning including the Co-op, the Little Sweet Shop and Martins Newsagents. At Church Street, younger pupils were keen to run their own challenges for their peers with a sponsored silence, photo booth, football competition, music and dance events as well as a cake sale and red non-school uniform. Overall a very successful day at Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form College, raising over £1926 at this stage, with a further £3166
raised by Years 7-11. All monies will be donated to the national target of securing schooling for over 300,000 children in parts of Africa. Nick Wergan, Headteacher said: “Students and staff exemplified the Steyning Grammar School spirit – commitment, hard work and great fun, in support of a fantastic charity. I am very proud of the amount students raised, how they worked together across all year groups and the passion they showed to support those less fortunate than themselves.“

Children redesign The High Sheriff helps keep the town in Minecraft Dame Vera Lynn Trust on track HackHorsham's first public event with Blockbuilders after the success at Tanbridge School in January has been another great success with 14 local children using Minecraft in St Mark's Church to redesign Queen Street in Horsham. Frances Haigh (Blueprint Project and Liberal Democrats Councillor) started the session with a presentation of photos to the children of Queen Street. The children then used their own ideas to redesign the street with hospitals, gyms, coffee shops, restaurants and amusement areas. Marcus Tyler-Moore from HackHorsham said: "The children's designs were incredible and the presentations they gave to the parents at the end of the session showed a great deal of enthusiasm and maturity, they should all feel very proud of themselves.
This session has proven again the need in Horsham for more STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) type events in schools and the public arena and we want to thank St Mark's Church for being incredible hosts." Revd Richard Coldicott, Vicar of St. Mark's said: "I am absolutely delighted that we could host this important session as we exist to serve our community. As a former teacher I understand the challenges many pupils face in accessing the curriculum, so I fully support this initiative using the Minecraft platform which enables all pupils to learn on a level footing". HackHorsham encourage you to like their page https://www.facebook.com/hackhorsham for future updates on events and would like feedback from your children on what STEAM activities they would like to see."

The Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy was thrilled to welcome the High Sheriff of West Sussex, Jonathan Lucas and his wife Caroline, to visit the School for Parents at Five Oaks, Billingshurst together with several other VIPs on Dame Vera’s 98th birthday. Guests observed the children in the classroom, and were able to meet and talk to parents and staff. The High Sheriff was then taken for a very special ride on the small gauge railway that operates within the site, and is run by a group of dedicated volunteers.

A local digital movement Gardening: Perhaps now is not the time to put down thick mulch Nik butler @loudmouthman
guy deakins Gardening
What an interesting week that was. I found myself walking past Leonardslee on one gloriously sunny but cold afternoon. I say walk past, I toured the 4 mile perimeter, trying to catch a sight of the garden as it springs into glory. Sadly for me, I caught only tantalizing glimpses of the famous Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias and Magnolias. It must be breath-taking and I look forward to the day it reopens. It was also the end of an interesting week in which I was asked to consult on a new 'Hanging Garden' project in a large international city (Which shall at present remain nameless as that is all I am allowed to say at this point and is very hush hush). So mum’s the word. I have to admit I found myself shouting at the radio on Sunday morning too. The garden guru on BBC Sussex was recommending putting down a good, thick mulch onto the borders now. By now I mean, now in the midst of the Blackthorn Winter the time of year where Spring decides to take a break to admire the Blackthorn blooms.
Meteorologically it is a time when our wind patterns change yet again, from northerlies to westerly’s bringing with them the traditional April showers. Anyway, two minutes later he was saying how cold the soil is still. Well, if I may, don't those two things contradict each other? In order to keep heat in we wrap that thing in insulation yes? But, we also do that for cold things. This of course is where I found myself shouting at the radio. You do not put a nice thick mulch on the borders now - unless of course you want to create a refrigerated bed - the opposite one supposes to a hot bed. The plants will suffer. In fact any scientist
worth his salt will present you with data to prove it. The best time to put on a mulch is autumn of course as the residual warmth is trapped just a little bit longer. It is also giving the worms and plants a chance of protection against the cold weather to come. A late spring mulch is good, but wait until the sun is warmer. If you do find you have an urge to mulch, first test the soil with your bare elbow. Like a baby’s bath water, if your elbow doesn't like it, don't mulch. Of course. I am no expert. Well actually I am, but don't tell the BBC, they might send Jeremy Clarkson to duff me up.
What began in an idea which spawned an article and lead to a conversation has in a little under a year become a small event from which big things can grow. Despite the continued persistence by a few people in having a demonstrable pride in their technical illiteracy; the acceptance of the Internet, computer games, and digital creativity, is no longer met with contempt or derision. What we have lacked are the opportunities to export that creative and technical potential; and in that space has grown the idea for Hack Horsham. The first public outing of which was for one of its Minecraft events organised in association with Block Builders and it has been an apparent success. Parents are looking for spaces in which their children can work together to learn, explore, create and share ideas about a common interest expressed through technology. At the same time those parents are asking many questions of each other, and of their friends, as to 'what is this Minecraft?, what is a Raspberry Pi?, What is Steam?' valid questions going unanswered. Whilst the community are searching for a home for Horsham football
Private Parties
club and we are correctly concerned about access to athletic facilities from Broadbridge Heath there is nothing in our societies vocabulary or experience to ask where are our maker spacers, how can we co-work and distribute digital learning and understanding? This goes beyond computers in a library or a few hours a week squeezed into school curriculum already short staffed and under informed. With the digital creative industry rapidly outstripping the local aviation industry the ongoing skills shortage accelerates salaries whilst rapidly reducing the need for commuting or travelling to an office. We should understand that the progress and benefits of technology and the Internet will not wait for us. There are thousands of jobs already pouring into Horsham by way of the Internet. They wont require heavy infrastructure changes or new property development; but competent and informed individuals capable of delivering to the needs of those online roles. Hack Horsham may be starting out digging holes in virtual worlds but it knows there are foundations to be built from which Horsham has the chance to raise a platform from which its community can reach out. What began in an idea has the ability to affect the strategic direction of Horsham plans and it wont be taking liberties to do so.

Stroke victim runs half marathon
On February 22 Jill Wakeman ran the Brighton Half Marathon in an attempt to raise as much money as possible for The Phoenix Stroke Club which is based in the grounds of Forest School, Horsham. Jill said: “Thank you for your support, kind wishes and grate-
fully received generous donations. The level of support has been incredible, I feel very grateful and to be honest overwhelmed. I ran with my sons, Jack, Henry and Leo, not forgetting Jack’s partner Lauren. Their presence and encouragement helped me enormously.
“I would especially like to thank Paul Griffitns of Printz Charmin who donated their time and services. Hopefully in the next 3-4 weeks I will be able to let you know how much money was raised.” Jill suffered a severe stroke in July 2013 and the immediate effects left her unable to use the entire right hand side of her body and left her incapable of speech except for one word… “No”. From the very moment she regained consciousness Jill’s drive to recover was monumental, and despite being told it was a very long and timely process, she awoke everyday with a focus that took her progress beyond anyone’s expectations. Within her first week of recovery Jill was able to put weight on her right leg, and six weeks later she walked out of the hospital aided only by a walking stick. On her return home from hospital, Jill continued to do all she could to recover, having to overcome not only the physical battle to regain her mobility but also the huge task of finding her voice and her self confidence again. Jill and her family running the Brighton Half Marathon is her way of showing how far hard work can take you, even when the odds are completely against you. To donate to the Phoenix Stroke Club on behalf of Jill’s brave half marathon please visit http:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/charities/phoenixstrokeclub. All donations go straight to The Phoenix Club and all support is met with upmost gratitude and appreciation by all at The Phoenix Club.

Out and About in Horsham OAAIH: A very near miss
Photo by Davey Pearson, March 2015
Photo by Danny Fuller, October 2014
Davey pearson Director - The District Post
Welcome to another one of my riveting columns, ahem, Out and About in Horsham or OAAIH. Last week as I wandered aimlessly down Brighton Road I couldn't help noticing the longer than usual queue of traffic. Now I know our traffic has increased of late due to all the new houses being... no wait I'll leave that, but this did seem rather long. I walked a few paces more and it became obvious as to why there were so many frustrated drivers. There was an articulated lorry inches away from the Iron Bridge posed ready to attempt safe passage. In the cab sat a red faced driver deliberating whether to take the risk and drive under said bridge, he did this for some considerable time (I watched as I get paid by the hour). He finally made up his mind, and with a determined look in his face started his engine, gave it a few peddle pumps revving his engine with confidence and... slowly reversed back down Brighton road into Queensway and disappeared out of view never to be seen again. The road unblocked, Horsham's work force could continue with their day and all was good in the world. So this begs the question, how many lorry drivers have run the gauntlet with The Iron Bridge... and lost. Boots comes to mind...

student Sophie Ward with governor Carolyn Watson Collyer’s Level 2 Business students spent a half-day learning about interviews from Collyer’s governors Carolyn Watson and Hugh Stafford-Smith. Carolyn and Hugh spoke to the students about the interview process and then put them through their paces with mock interviews. Lucy Hargreaves, who helped coordinate the event as part of the college’s progression and careers work, explained: “The students had previously been given job descriptions and gone through the process of researching the company and job role, completing an application and submitting a CV and cover letter. After all the preparation and research, they were then put through the rigours of a mock interview.” Using their extensive experience, the governors spent time with each

student to talk through the concept of a job interview and after the mocks, they spoke to the students individually, to provide feedback on their performance and advise on areas they may wish to work on before seeking employment. The feedback from the ‘candidates’ was very positive. Sophie Tidy said: “I have never been interviewed before and so was very nervous. Carolyn made me feel really comfortable and offered me lots of feedback on my strengths and weaknesses. I feel a lot more confident in going for real interviews now I have had this experience.” Matt Chandler said: “It was very beneficial and taught me interview skills that I will need in the future. The advice was really good.” Ceiren Cooney added: “I thought the interview was very helpful and should be used more often with students.” Sophie Ward was also impressed: “Great experience. The governors were so helpful and gave great advice.” During the day the students also gained an insight into an interviewer’s perspective, as Hugh and Carolyn gave top-tips about what they look for in candidates, how to stand out from the crowd and methods to build rapport. Hugh Stafford-Smith said: “This is about making the best of the talent our young people have got and helping them develop it. All the students I interviewed today clearly have huge potential!” Principal Sally Bromley added: “Massive thanks to Hugh StaffordSmith and Carolyn Watson for giving up their valuable time and helping the next generation. The students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and through a practical exercise picked up a tremendous amount about the world of work.” Lucy Hargreaves was delighted: “I am so proud of our students. They performed superbly and were keen to learn new ideas. They were dressed extremely professionally, forming a strong first impression with Carolyn and Hugh. Well done to all of the students who took part today – if it were up to me, I’d certainly say to all of them: ‘You’re hired’!”

Enjoy Horsham chocolate Billingshurst’s China Brasserie closes doors
Horsham museum
www.horshammuseum.org
The ancient market town of Horsham was famous for its broom sticks, rabbits, chickens and gingerbread. 100 years ago the town was well known for its beer. Now thanks to the passion of local artisan makers Horsham is becoming known for its chocolate. To celebrate this 21st century fame Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum has launched Horsham’s Chocolate – a premium hand made chocolate that draws on the skill, craft and taste buds of the chocolatier Wimblehurst Chocolates. This new visitor souvenir is the perfect gift for the modern day traveller as it is easy to carry and is
strongly branded to the town, for they key image is the celebrated seal of Horsham used on documents spanning the centuries. As for the chocolate as well as the usual flavours the delicious raspberry, orange and mint perfectly compliment the luxurious melt in the mouth taste of the chocolate. Once tasted you will not want to go back to the more well-known brands. This new venture perfectly timed for the Easter and the town’s great visitor attraction Piazza Italia. It is also a modern day example of the museum working in partnership with Wimblehurst Chocolates to create a different souvenir for the visitor. The Museum and Visitor Information Centre is open MondaySaturday 10-5pm admission free. Please note that on Good Friday and Easter Monday the Museum is open 11-4pm
The Directors of China Brasserie, Billingshurst, have very reluctantly come to the decision that they must close the China Brasserie restaurant in Billingshurst with effect from Saturday, March 21, 2015. This decision will not affect China Brasserie in North Street, Horsham, which has very successfully traded from those premises for over 15 years. Both of the China Brasserie restaurants are jointly owned by Don Burstow and his partners, Yee and Fien Wang. The first restaurant opened in Horsham in 2001 and was the brainchild of Don’s late wife, Melanie. The success of the Horsham restaurant led to the Billingshurst restaurant being opened as “China Brasserie 2” in 2008, a few months before Melanie’s death. Inevitably, operating successful restaurants of this kind and of this quality requires experienced chefs and front of house staff. Recruiting those staff for both restaurants and particularly the Billingshurst restaurant, has become increasingly difficult and it is that difficulty that has led to the closure. Don explained that in 2007/2008 the Border Agency introduced a sponsorship arrangements whereby employers could become licensed with the Home Office and sponsor skilled employees to come to the UK to work in certain trades. That was particularly important for China Brasserie to maintain the quality
of chefs that it required. Don said: “Melanie and I and our partners were determined that we would maintain a legitimate workforce in our restaurants and the appropriate way of dealing with that would be to become licensed through the Home Office. We were not prepared to take on any “illegal” employees. We went through a thorough vetting and registration process and have become a licensed sponsor. Unfortunately, because of the pressure to reduce immigration numbers, since 2008 the Home Office has raised its qualifying criteria for employing qualified chefs from overseas to a level that simply cannot be sustained by restaurants of our kind in a location such as Billingshurst. In order now to qualify for sponsorship a chef would have to be paid a level of salary, plus accommodation and keep, far in excess of anything that we can afford. This has meant that, having successfully sponsored a number of chefs in the early years of our sponsorship licence, that is no longer possible. This really is a great pity as employers such as us, who have attempted to comply with the rules and remain legitimate with regard to the people that we employ, are now being priced out of the market. It would be very easy to employ workers who are not legitimately in the UK but we are not prepared to do that.” We are extremely grateful to all of our loyal staff who have worked for us over the years, including a great

Crates Local in the search for Horsham’s best coffee
The District Post is organising the Caffe Italia competition this year as part of the Horsham Piazza Italia fortnight in the lead up to the event this Easter. The competition will take place from Friday, March 13, to April 10, and Carfax business Crates Local are participating in this years event. Co-owner Marion Carter said: “It’s all about the coffee we freshly grind our coffee for each cup but it really starts with the beans from Horsham Coffee Roaster. They roast in small batches and all of it is traceable, so we know exactly where it comes from and we know the grower gets a fair price for their beans. Our roasters are very passionate about supplying premium, ethically traded, freshly roasted coffee.” Horsham Coffee Roaster specialise in several blends and their unique bold blend used daily by Crates Local is made up of beans from Brazil, Peru and Rwanda. also supply a decaf blend using spring water and is chemical free. Many of their blends are available to buy direct from Crates who will also grind to suit how customers make their coffee at home, a service unique in Horsham. Marion added: “The milk is also very important in creating the perfect cup of coffee. We use a local dairy, Downsview in Ringmer who supply fresh milk that is far less processed than other milk to make a better coffee. This non-homogonised milk is just like how milk used to be when it was delivered to your doorstep with the cream on top.” When it comes to actually combining these crucial ingredients together, Crates is proud their baristas are fully trained and absolutley passionate about what they do. Marion explained: "They are trained at the roastery where they try all the different coffees and learn the entire process. It’s important to do

it properly." She added: “I think we’re going to put up strong competition in this year’s competition. Even the sprinkles on top of our hot chocolate are quality fair-trade." Of course in addition to fine coffee, Crates offers other drinks and a wide range of food to eat in or take away made freshly from the local produce they sell from their shop which was forerunner to the cafe. Crates Local is based in the Carfax, Horsham, to find out more visit www.crateslocal.co.uk or pop in and try their delicious unique blend. Encourage Wildlife to your garden
at
P
A There is so much choice and diversity when it comes to plants with their bold flowers and beautiful aesthetics that we often overlook the benefits that they have on wildlife.
Open Thursday to Sunday
Most flowers that plants produce are made for attracting insects, to complete the vital task of pollination. These pollinating insects do the majority of the legwork but the pollen and nectar the your garden home. flowers produce also provide an important food source for our abundant butterflies, bees and other insects.
Increasing the biodiversity of your garden doesn’t have to be difficult. You don’t need a large plot or to dramatically change the appearance of what has already been established. Please read the following information and learn how a few small changes can bring major benefits to the creatures that call your garden home. Include plants to your borders that provide pollen and nectar for as long a season as possible. Crocus bulbs and species of Mahonia are some of the first to flower in early spring,
with a whole host of perennials and shrubs continuing from summer through to autumn.
Tflowering
A few popular examples are listed below: Buddleja davidii (Butterfly Bush) Campsis radicans (Trumpet Honeysuckle) Fuchsia species Leucanthemum vulgare (Ox-eye Daisy) Rudbeckia species Sedum species Hedera helix (Native, Common Ivy) Ceratostigma plumbaginoides (Leadwort) Elaeagnus pungens (Silverthorn) Growing a range of these shrubs and perennials in the garden will attract insects to visit. To provide shelter as well as sources of food leave a part of the garden undisturbed or why not get creative and make a wildlife haven. This doesn't mean your garden has to look a mess, but piles of leaves and twiggy debris can provide both food and habitat for many species. Old pots, roof tiles or piles of stones can be tucked away in hidden corners behind the shed or at the back of a border. A perfect habitat for hibernating amphibians and critters.
Try to be a little more organically minded when it comes to perturbing unwanted pests to the borders when using pesticides. Synthetic pesticide products are toxic and not only harm the target organisms but impose harmful risks to those higher up the food chain. Bugs and insects may be heavily reliant on this food source.
10am - 4pm Our coffee shop offers a fantastc range of freshly prepared sandwiches, savoury snacks, homemade cakes and hot and cold drinks. Our friendly staff will look after you whatever the weather! In the summer you can enjoy traditional ginger beer in the terrace garden and in the cold and rain, hide away on one of our comfy sofas with a hot chocolate and slice of cake!
One particular common pest is the slug, infuriatingly known for turning a beautiful Hosta into a nibbled mess resembling something like a Swiss cheese! Planting them into pots, nestled on pot feet to raise them off the ground is one way to rectify this problem. Alternatively, slugs and snails hate travelling over surfaces with sharp and rough edges. Now is the perfect time of year, just before the fresh Hosta crowns are coming into leaf, to lay some gritty gravel or broken up egg shell around the base. Instead of sprinkling slug pellets which can be poisonous to hedgehogs and pets, why not try one of these alternative methods this year?
Plant of the Month The ‘Star Magnolia’ is a large deciduous shrub with showy white flowers which have long distinctive petals.
APRIL OFFER 1Ltr Perennials £3.99 each or 3 for £10
The flowers appear along the bare stems in early spring before the fresh leaf buds begin to open. This species is native to Japan and is typically found growing in moist areas along streams and in light woodland naturally in South-Eastern Asia.
Add some seasonal colour to your borders with our large range of herbaceous perennials, ready now for planting!
They have adapted well to our climate and are hardy against frosts. It is the smallest and most popular of Magnolias, so is a lovely choice for the smaller garden.
Magnolia stellata
Plant within a mixed border or as a specimen, adding Ericaceous compost when planting to provide a more acidic soil for it to establish in.

Pulborough 27 - 11 Hastings & Bexhill
Horsham Men’s 1st XI 2 - 3 Marlow
Rugby Martin Read - Sports Reporter In bitterly cold conditions Pulborough pulled off a much needed win, consigning Hastings to bottom spot below struggling Lewes who unexpectedly beat Park House – by a single point. Boro led 20-8 at the break after Hastings had notched up a penalty and try. Although the direction of the pervasive wind changed making the second half more challenging, Boro managed to convert their fourth try to earn a valuable bonus point. For Boro Ollie Paige crossed the line twice and Jack Leddra and Charlie Denman once each while Frazer Oliphant-Hope and Tom Hoey successfully kicked. Tomorrow (Saturday) Boro will be tested by a trip to current runners up Dartfordians, who beat them at home earlier in the season. Three teams will be relegated, with Hastings and Lewes already condemned. Boro, not yet certain of survival, remain eighth on 34 points, ahead of Gillingham Anchorians (32) and Park House (25). The final week of the season is on April 11 when Boro go to Park House for what could be a relegation decider. At home Boro beat them comfortably in the first week of the campaign but their away record is poor with just one win from nine starts. Tomorrow Park House visit Hastings and Gillingham host third placed Heathfield & Waldron and then, on April 11, travel to Bromley (6th).

Horsham lost despite two goals from John Burroughs
Horsham attacked from the off, were unlucky not to score in the opening seconds and made all the running in the first 20 minutes, threatening a goal fest. They created scoring opportunities throughout the game, earning nine short corners but somehow lost. Player Coach Dom Male said: “We threw everything at them to try to win” and Team Manager Al Camp-
bell summed up Horsham’s disappointment with: “We played some magnificent passing hockey – they had five chances and scored three, we had twenty chances and scored two – it was one of those days!” Captain Duncan Howarth added: “Marlow are a better team than their league position (eighth) suggests, they’re the only team below us that we’ve lost to. We just couldn’t get the ball in the net this week.” After waves of attacks Horsham went ahead on six minutes when John Burroughs, lurking wide, finished off a short corner move. Marlow, though, gradually came more into the game drawing an excellent save from Neil Burlinson before Andy McIlwraith cleared off the line ahead of a well taken reverse stick equaliser. An early second half Horsham
charge was scrambled away, then, after 17 minutes Marlow went ahead from a messy goal following an initial save. Four Horsham short corners in quick succession came to nought until Jack Dean saved in the goal mouth, ran the length of the pitch, winning tackles en route and passed to John Burroughs for him to level the score. But, Marlow netted a late breakaway foray to take the points. Horsham are unable to improve their now certain third place in the table, denying them the possibility of promotion. Tomorrow (Saturday) in their last home game of the season Horsham, looking to avenge an earlier defeat, have a tough encounter with current runners up Banbury who have scored 116 goals – 30 more than the next highest scoring club – and conceded only 42, the second fewest.
Gritty Horsham win and will battle on in the playoffs Saturday March 21 - Women’s Conference East Horsham Ladies 1st XI 1 - 0 Chelmsford Hockey Martin Read - Sports Reporter If ever there was a must win game this was it. Horsham Ladies’ only chance of survival in the national league was to win and for fellow strugglers Bedford to be beaten in their match. Despite losing their last seven games and 13 out of the last 14, Horsham showed greater resolve – Bedford lost and are relegated. Before the start there was an air of confidence in the Horsham camp, new coach, England’s Dan Shingles, telling the District Post: “We’re good enough and the way we’re playing we can definitely do it.” Team Manager Jane Denman added: “We’ve got a new format and the girls are now playing for fun.” While captain Gill
Adams said: “We aren’t going down without a fight!” Horsham certainly battled all the way, sustained pressure earning them all of the game’s eight short corners. Neither side scored in the first half but Horsham broke the deadlock after the interval when former captain Emma Whipps fired across from the right for Fran Crossley to smash in the deciding goal. Horsham Club Captain Nick Kimberley told us: “Horsham were pushed back a few times but showed great determination, kept challenging and definitely deserved to win - Chelmsford only had two real attempts at goal.” Horsham now go into the playoffs against the penultimate teams from the Women’s Conference West and North divisions – Bristol Firebrands and Liverpool Sefton. The winner of the round robin will stay up and the others will be relegated, ebullient Jane Denman beaming: “We’ve really got our tails up now!”
Hawks back on track in title race A big Hawks win over Worthing

U12 Horsham Hawks 101 - 79 U12 Worthing D&D Youth Basketbal Dave Smith - Sports Editior The Horsham Hawks U12 are back in the title race after an incredible win against the Sussex league leaders in a game featuring eleven South East England players. This was a must win game for the Hawks who needed to secure victory by at least nine points over a previously unbeaten Worthing team to put themselves back in contention for League Champions. The Hawks began quickly taking an early 9-2 advantage before the game settled into a more even keel with both teams trading baskets. An 8-2 run to close the quarter put the Hawks in a strong opening position and 30-18 advantage with Josh Lea-Clayton and Antonio Lozzi contributing 12 and 10 first quarter points respectively. In the second quarter foul trouble forced Lea-Clayton to the bench with Fin Bennett stepping in seamlessly. Solid rebounding from Josh Tavolieri and Harry Rose supplied attacking opportu-
nities for identical twins Amy and Charlotte Willcox as the lead was extended to 52-35 at the half. Both teams showed their pedigree in the third quarter with an incredible shooting performance and a massive combined 58 points scored by both teams in just ten minutes. The Hawks handled the pressure well and won the quarter 30-28 to extend their lead to 82-63. Intelligent ball movement coupled with strong drives to the basket opened up the Worthing defence with Tavolieri adding 8 points to his total. A late 8-2 surge from Worthing narrowed the score to 99-79 before LeaClayton took the Hawks past the century mark securing an important 101-79 victory that keeps Horsham’s title hope alive with just four league fixtures remaining. Next up for the Hawks is a home fixture against the Eastbourne Lions. Scorers: Antonio Lozzi – 35, Josh Lea-Clayton - 30, Josh Tavolieri 18, Charlotte Willcox - 10, Amy Willcox – 4, Harry Rose - 2, Finley Bennett - 2, Miguel Venturini, Jamie Coulson, Meghan Stevens, Anaya Wakefield, James Lowe.

Solitary Sullivan strike secures all three points Photos by Clive Turner
Saturday March 21 - Sussex County League Div 1 Horsham YMCA 1 - 0 Pagham Football Tom Norris - Football Reporter
A 79th minute Nick Sullivan strike was all that separated YM and third-place Pagham, as Peter Buckland’s side ran out impressive 1-0 winners at Gorings Mead on Saturday. The deserved three points helped the hosts reclaim sixth spot in Division 1 on goal difference, and dealt a major blow to the Lions’ chances of being crowned Champions. Manager Peter Buckland commented: “That has got to rank among one of our best performances this season. We knew that Pagham were good and testament to us, their manager just said to me that we thoroughly deserved it and are without doubt the best team they’ve played all season. “I’ve just said the same to the players and it beggars belief what we could have achieved. I look back at some of the stupid games that we’ve lost, and I don’t know why? I look at myself in the mirror and think ‘am I doing something

wrong’? Is it selection, is it motivation? It’s just weird and I don’t understand it.” YM shaded a very even and strongly contested affair, which although wasn’t littered with clear cut chances, provided an entertaining spectacle. In the end it was Sullivan’s strike eleven minutes from time that secured the three points. Picking the ball up on the left, YM’s top goalscorer ran at the Pagham defence, before jinking inside in trademark fashion, delaying his shot and then firing low past a helpless James Binfield from twelve yards. Buckland concluded: “We had one or two scares because Pagham are a good side, but I think that the best team won the game of football, without a doubt. We could easily have been 2-0 up at half time and we had a clear cut penalty. I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and I thought that it was a good advert for Division 1 football. You won’t see many better games than that in the Ryman South.” YM: Lockwood, Carden, Gathern, O’Carroll, Evans, Dugdale, Gedling, D. Sullivan (Hibbert 79), D. Brown, Schaaf, N. Sullivan. the busier, saving well from both Moore and Andrade. With less than 5 minutes remaining Newhaven’s Lee Robinson got behind the Heath defence, Chester came out to clear but clattered into the Newhaven man and Bunch stepped up to score from the resulting penalty. Deep into injury time Newhaven won a free kick on the edge of the Heath penalty area, the ball hit the Heath defensive wall, came out to a Newhaven player on the right who crossed to the far post for Ryan Walton to score from close range and snatch victory with the last kick of the match. With Newhaven placed fifth a draw looks a good result for Heath, but given they led by two goals with five minutes remaining it is two points dropped. Superbly marshalled by Martyn Flack and facing the strong first half wind Heath stood firm at the back against the opposition’s long ball tactics in the first ten minutes. Then on the counter attack Mark Bevan played a through ball into the path of Tiago Andrade, who
drove into the penalty area where he was brought down by keeper Jake Buss giving the referee an easy decision to award a penalty. Andrade picked himself up to score from the spot for his tenth league goal of the season. Newhaven pilled forward and had a number of chances to equalise, Ebou Jallow and Craig Bunch both wasting good opportunities to score. Then in the final minute of the half Andrade whipped in at the near post, Buss missed his punch and the ball was bundled into the net by Harry Balfour from six yards, giving Heath a somewhat fortunate 2-0 half-time lead. Heath had a second half effort ruled out for offside as the two teams traded chances, but with Newhaven keeper Jake Buss

Dominant Green & Whites seal league championship rugby
Dave Smith – Sports Editor
Saturday March 21 - London 3 South East Horsham 49 - 12 Old Dustonians On paper this was a difficult match for Horsham to have to win and secure the league title from. Old Dunstonians have a very experienced International group of players and lie third in the table but a superb display of attacking rugby saw the Green & Whites take the victory that deservedly crowned them London SE3 Champions. Although facing a strong cold wind Horsham attacked from the whistle and took a well deserved lead on eleven minutes. Will Bell on the counter attack found Jamie Gibbs who scored a well taken try which was converted by the dependable boot of Tom Johnson. The now buoyant Horsham continued to press and they gained further reward on twenty two minutes when following some
good passages of play Johnny Ordidge burst through the middle to finish the try, converted by Tom Johnson, and leaving the score 14-0. Six minutes later five players were involved in a sweeping move that finished in the try of the match. Jamie Gibbs received the ball in space and found Tom Johnson and Declan Nwachukwu tracking his run from where he put in Tom Johnson to score and subsequently convert his own try. With no further addition to the score Horsham took the comfortable 21 – 0 lead into the break. After the restart, on forty five minutes, Horsham went further ahead after good defence led to Dunstonians spilling the ball from where winger Declan Nwachukwu pounced on the loose ball and sprinted in for a converted bonus point try. Dunstonians got on the score sheet four minutes later when their centre went over for a try that was converted, bringing the score to 28 – 7. On sixty four minutes normal service was resumed when Jamie Gibbs streaked in for his second following further pressure by the

backs defensive line. Tom Johnson continued to kick superbly converting his fifth try leaving the score 35-7. Dunstonians refused to lie down and pulled another try back that went unconverted, but with the title won Horsham turned on the style and in the last ten minutes scored a further fourteen points. Will Bell outpaced the quick Dunstonians left winger to score under the posts for another converted try and two minutes later Johnny Ordidge found Declan Nwachukwu in support who raced away to score the last converted try of the afternoon leaving the final score 49-12. It was a superb strong team performance and a fitting way for Horsham, who have been dominant throughout the season, to tie up the championship. The Green & Whites can now look forward to the last two games of the season with the job already done. Horsham Team: Bell, Whiting J, Gibbs, Ordidge, Nwachukwu, Johnson, Rush (Mills 60 mins), Brady (Cass 35 mins), Fisher, Barber, Goward (Tobin 45mins), Green, Price, Thompson, Tredgett (Cass 60 mins).
Rare win gives the Hornets a ray of hope Saturday March 21 - Ryman League Division One South Hastings United 0 - 2 Horsham Football Dave Smith - Sports Editor
Gregg Berry (12) crosses for Bailo Camara to score
Tony Nwachukwu celebrates the opening goal
Tom Johnson converted 7 tries including one of his own
Coming into this fixture Horsham had only picked up one point from their last nine games, and their hosts Hastings had only picked up three points from their previous nine. With form like that Horsham are favourites to drop out of the division and freefalling Hastings are one of the sides that could join them. It was Horsham however who took all three points from the match and in doing so have prised open slightly the relegation escape door and pulled a major rival closer to them. The Hornets scored twice from open play, something they have not achieved in the league since Bailo Camara and Tony Nwachukwu scored on February 3 to earn Horsham’s last point; and it was the same pair again who combined at Hastings to this time secure all three points. This was more importantly a thoroughly deserved victory. Horsham created a number of decent chances while keeper Gareth Williams was given an easy afternoon from the Hastings forwards which hopefully will give the Hornets a lift for the all important end of the
season run in. Another new Hornets signing made the starting line up, Tom Howard-Bold had joined from runaway league leaders Burgess Hill Town on Friday and replaced George Branford, while three new signings started for Hastings as they attempted to halt their slide down the table. Both sides showed no sign of nerves, both starting the game by attacking each other from the off which led to new boy Howard – Bold having a decent shot tipped over by ex Hornets keeper Josh Pelling. With twenty minutes gone Horsham got the vital first goal when Nwachukwu out jumped home defender Rose before controlling the ball and slipping it past the helpless Pelling. With both teams finding goals hard to come by, especially of late, this was a big boost to Horsham that knocked Hastings brittle confidence at the same time. Horsham did in fact control the remainder of the half with Howard-Bold and Gilbert both coming close to adding a second. Hastings held out and Horsham took the important, but slender, lead into the break. With Tom Gilbert off the field early in the second half receiving treatment for an injury Hastings had a couple of chances as they pushed hard for the equaliser,
both Steve Brinkhurst and Ade Olorunda going close for the hosts. The nervy Horsham supporters were finally put out of their misery with seven minutes remaining; the very swift Gregg Berry, who had come on to replace Vickers, sped to the byline and crossed for the unmarked Bailo Camara to tap into an open goal giving his side a comfortable two goal buffer. Hastings fell apart in the final minutes Ray and Caley were both booked and Ade Olorunda was shown a straight red card in stoppage time as the home teams frustration turned to indiscipline. This victory does in no way save the Hornets from the drop, but it gives a glimmer of hope. With six to play two of the games look very difficult, away to third placed Faversham and home to play off chasing Whyteleafe this Saturday. The others are against teams either in mid table safety or down the bottom and in the relegation fight. Whether winning those four games would be enough, it would give Horsham a final total of forty five points when three of the current bottom five already have thirty seven points, is very doubtful but at least there is still a chance. Horsham Team: Williams, Hope, Obersteller, Gilbert, Byrne, Welch, Bold, Vickers (Berry 82) McCreadie, Nwachukwu, Camara. Unused Subs: Izokun, Branford, Storey, de Andrade.
