Tributes paid to Alexandra - “one of the greatest girls” phil dennett News Editor

The heartbroken family of a 19-year-old woman killed in a crash near Partridge Green has paid a tribute to her in which she is described as “beautiful inside and out”.

Alexandra Giddings of Brighton Road, Shermanbury, was also praised by someone who knew her as “incredible, caring, kind and funny” as family, friends, and acquaintances tried to come to terms with her tragic death.

Nursery nurse Alexandra was driving east on the B2116 Shermanbury Road at about 10.20pm on May 14 when her car left the road and collided with a tree. She was the only person in the car.

Alexandra was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton where she died from her injuries next morning.

Alexandra was a pupil at Jolesfield Church of England Primary School in Partridge Green and Steyning Grammar School before she qualified as a nursery nurse at City College in Brighton. She worked at Bluebells Nursery and

was also a member of the facilities team at Horsham Hospital.

Throughout her life she showed a keen interest in football and was a member of two local teams. She was also a keen supporter of English rugby.

Alexandra had just returned from South Africa, where she had volunteered with the international development organisation Skillshare, which works to reduce poverty, injustice and inequality. Skillshare said of her contribution: "Alexandra approached her placement with enthusiasm, kindness, vibrancy and humour".

The family said it would like to echo the sentiments of one of Alexandra's team leaders, Jed Haney, who said: “The world has lost one of the greatest girls I had the privilege of knowing. She was incredible, caring, kind, funny and would always take the need of others into consideration before herself."

In his tribute another team leader, Dan Hancock, said: "She touched the lives of friends, children and families over the past three months and I was proud of her."

The tribute issued by the family also said: “Alexandra was known for the exuberance she bought to her social life. She was a social

butterfly having a wide and varied group of friends. She was beautiful inside and out and the glue that held all the friendship groups together.

Yoga fans went through their paces in the park to help the stricken people of Nepal.

More than 45 took up the offer of a free yoga class with donations to raise £515.22 for the Nepal Disaster Fund.

Yoga teacher Meg Thompson, of YogaWithMeg, said: “I was touched at how many people wanted to get involved, over 45 people attended, and even people who weren’t at-

tending the class were putting money in the donation bucket once they saw what was going on. I would like to thank all the fantastic people who attended and donated.”

The money given will be spread amongst a number of charities in Nepal.

First class postmaster Philip Shelley is still looking forward as he celebrates 30 years with the Post Office.

Philip, from Horsham, was presented with his 30-year Long Service Award by Caroline Hoare, Post Office field change advisor.

Having achieved his milestone Philip has no intention of resting on his laurels at Coltsfoot Drive Post Office in Horsham.

He says he has plans to modernise and expand the premises later this year, which would include a convenience store.

The 63-year-old said: “I am delighted to receive the long service award and will accept this award on behalf of my family and the wonderful team of staff that have supported me and helped run this store and post office for many years. I still enjoy running the post office and I am excited about developing the business even further in the future.”

Philip started working in Southwater Post Office for his father before moving to the newly built Coltsfoot Drive Post Office in 1980.

He took over from his father as postmaster of Coltsfoot Drive Post Office in April 1985, where he has remained at the helm ever since.

The Post Office says Coltsfoot is very much a family run business. It is part of a small shopping precinct in a busy residential area and the precinct was built by Mr Shelley’s father and has been a focal point of the area since 1980.

The third generation of family, Philip’s son Chris, is actively in-

volved in the business.

Philip is married and has two grown up children. He enjoys fishing, walking his two pet dogs and when time permits he loves to take his boat on a leisurely relaxing trip down the River Thames.

Loving Horsham couple Iris and Ernest go platinum after 70 years Long loving Horsham couple Iris and Ernest Balliger are celebrating a 70th wedding anniversary.

And Iris believes their secret was spending so much time together and being in love.

Romance was certainly on the radar when Iris, now 95, and Ernest, now 93, of Smithbarn, Horsham, met on Ernest’s 21st birthday as radar workers at RAF Barkway in Hertfordshire. They were moved to RAF Stenigot in Lincolnshire and were later moved to other stations around the country during the war.

Iris's family lived in Nottingham at this time and Ernest's parents lived in Kilburn, London.

After they were married at Chilwell Methodist Church, Beeston, Nottingham on May 26 1945, their reception food was goods bought through ration cards saved by family members. Ernest had fortunately saved a stock of wine from before the war.

To the delight of Iris, Ernest showed a talent for using a sewing machine, making curtains and many costumes for his son and daughter.

He has always loved drawing, walking and gardening.

Irish was the sporty one, playing hockey and tennis and maintaining an interest in all kinds of sport to this day. She also loved walking and they both did a lot of it in the Swiss Alps during summer holidays.

After their wartime duties Ernest worked for the London Coun-

ty Council, which later became the Greater London Council, in the treasury department. He also worked in the evenings at Kensington Evening Institute, adult education, in administration.

Iris brought up the family, son Nick and daughter Verena (now Beane) and in the early 1960's worked also at the Evening Institute for the next 20 years. Ernest retired from the treasury department in 1980 and the couple have lived in Horsham for 30 years. They have three grandchildren Ben, 34, James,

32, and Emma 39, and Ben’s wife is Helen is expecting a child in November. Iris and Ernest manage to live at home with the help of a carer.

Asked by the Post what their platinum secret for being married for 70 years is Iris said: 'Because we love each other and enjoy each other's company. We have virtually spent no time apart since we got married'.

Their son Nick Balliger said: "A platinum anniversary is more unusual. I suppose they will get more common as people will live longer.

We are very proud of them."

New £11 million John Lewis & Waitrose d The District Post has been on a guided tour of the new John Lewis ‘At Home’ and Waitrose development that is due to open on Thursday June 18 at 9.00am.

The John Lewis branch manager Nigel Davis and Waitrose manager Jo Thomas, along with a variety of marketing and PR staff from the two separate arms of the group, conducted the tour.

The Waitrose store will at 27,000 sq feet be almost twice the size of the existing Horsham store and the new John Lewis will cover 43,000 sq feet over two floors. The development, which has created a total of 217 new jobs, will see John Lewis ‘At Home’ and Waitrose become truly integrated, giving customers the opportunity to browse both shops in one trip.

Nigel Davis, who has seven years service with the group, explained that this is the second of the combined ‘At Home’ stores. John Lewis

‘At Home’ will present a selection of 16,000 products across furniture, furnishing accessories, homeware, technology and nursery departments.

The shop will also be the first John Lewis branch to introduce the Home hub – a new concept that will bring together all home services and allow customers to browse John Lewis’ full furniture range, whether in-store or via online portals, in one space. Surrounding the Home hub will be a series of eleven room sets displaying various interior trends.

Jo Davis, who is the current manager of the Waitrose store in Piries Place and will be transferring across, said how excited she was about the opening and that in terms of design and innovation both stores have taken things to another level.

As well as a 150 seat Cafe overlooking the glass fronted entrance atrium the Waitrose will have a

juice bar, a bakery where bread, cakes and pastries can be bought and eaten on site and amazingly a wine bar where customers can have a glass of wine or a cold beer during their shopping experience.

Both stores have a lot of work still to do on them before the doors open at 9.00pm on June 18 but both store managers, the construction site director and all those involved are confident all will be spot on and perfect come the big day.

John Lewis ‘At Home’ will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 8pm, and Sunday from 10am until 4.30pm (including Sunday browse time from 10am until 10.30am).

Waitrose will be open Monday to Saturday from 7.30am until 9pm, and Sunday from 10.30am until 4.30pm. The café will be open Monday to Saturday 7.30am until 8pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm. There will be over 350 parking spaces available at the site.

800 Southwater homes could be set to Setyres set to stay put in disappear after Parish Council doubts new planning application Residents of Southwater might be saying goodbye to two housing estates totalling nearly 800 homes if their parish councillors have their way.

Southwater Parish Council is asking for two schemes near Worthing Road and Mill Straight to be “called in” for close examination by a Government planning department because it considers them unsuitable for the area because of pressures on local roads.

The request is made as part of the council’s response to Horsham District Planning Framework process.

In part of its comments the council says: “The Parish Council is of the

opinion that the questions raised over the ability of the Southwater highways infrastructure to cope with any more development affects the

Southwater Parish Council is asking for two schemes to be “called in” decision taken to permit DC/14/0590 for 594 homes on land to the west of Worthing Road, and the ongoing consideration of DC/14/2582 for

up to 193 homes on land to the west of Mill Straight. It will therefore be asking the Secretary of State for both these applications to be called in.”

The council’s consultant, the Russell Giles Partnership found that the current performance of both Hop Oast and Pollards Hill roundabouts was generally at about 85% capacity during the morning peak, with the A24 northbound at Pollards Hill being 98% at times.

The parish council response said: “This clearly indicates that both roundabouts are at capacity now and cannot accommodate any further development without significant improvements”.

Residents of Henfield could see the Setyres company staying at its present site in Henfield after the withdrawal of a planning application for homes on the site.

The agent for the company said this week a new application proposing the company remaining there with some housing was being prepared.

The original application was for 14 homes and a shop, with the company moving elsewhere, but this was recently withdrawn.

Agent Richard Raper, of Leeds, told the Post: “We think the company will be better suited where it is, with a new unit for Setyres and some

housing. We shall be submitting a planning application shortly.”

The development is one of several being monitored by the Hands off Henfield group.

It is awaiting news of the appeal over Sandgate Nursery, where an application for 72 homes near Hollands Road and WestEnd Lane was refused by Horsham District Council last year. It is watching to see when a start will be made on the 160-homes Barratts estate in West End Lane and the Croudace development in Manor Close. Barratts won approval for their estate on appeal against refusal of Horsham District Council.

Muscle and winch turn bridge into bench

Three men and a winch mean walkers are sitting on what used to be stone footbridge at Storrington.

The stone slab, weighing more than a ton, was once a route over the river Storr near the town’s waterfall and is now a bench at the Dell.

The slab had been laying in the stream for several years, and its weight meant it took three men and a winch to recover it and put it in its new home.

Storrington Conservation Society marked the change of use with an unveiling ceremony and the bench is now in regular use.

Chanctonbury Lions Club funded the project and Mike Summers of

Abitis landscaping did the work.

The formal unveiling was carried out by Roger Harris, the President of the Lions, and Mick Denness chairman of the society.

On June 6 the group meets at 10am at the Glade to clear the paths of brambles and undergrowth, and says all assistance would be welcome. This follows earlier work there of spreading wood chippings for the benefit of walkers.

The group also arranges conducted walks. The next one is on June 17 starting from the Leisure Centre car park at 10.30am, led by Jessica Jacob along Riverside Walk and ending with coffee and cakes.

Junior kayaker Charlie raising funds Farmer Annie Brown for World Championships dream hopes to reap top prize

World ranking Horsham teenager Charlie Brackpool is spending summer fund-raising to achieve the dream of a lifetime on water.

Charlie’s big ambition is to compete at the 2015 Freestyle Kayaking World Championships in Ottawa, Canada in September.

To supplement his work as a cleaner he has launched an online crowdfunding campaign on PledgeSports. org to raise money.

The 17-year-old kayaker is ranked among the top three juniors in Britain and among the top ten juniors in the world and has already earned his place in the British Freestyle Kayaking Team for the World Championships.

But he does not receive any funding from any governing bodies and is entirely supported by his job as a cleaner and his family. To prepare for the World Championships he needs

to train and compete internationally, to test his skills and learn new moves.

This is very costly for the full-time student and he has launched a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeSports. org to help raise the funds needed for him to reach his true potential.

Charlie said: “Over the next 12 months I wish to progress my Kayaking as much as possible before the World Championships in September, learning new moves and pushing my boundaries.

“I’m aiming for the top ten and driving for the top five at the World Championships, but I also want to learn as much as I can about competing in the highest level of my sport to ready myself for further events.”

Charlie has already accumulated time in the water in Canada, Spain and Uganda and is hoping to build on that before the World Championships. He aims to raise £500 to help him do that and is hoping that will also allow him more time to train and less working.

A Sussex woman will find out on Wednesday if she has won a national farming and conservation award.

Annie Brown of Lower Paythorne and Purching Manor farms is one of five finalists going forward to the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group’s Silver Lapwing Award.

The winner will be announced at an award ceremony in Essex on June 3.

Organisers say Annie was nominated for the final to recognise the outstanding efforts she takes to promote good habitat management on the farm she runs in the South Downs National Park.

The award, sponsored by Waitrose for the seventh year running, recognises farmers who go the “extra mile” to protect and enhance the countryside in which they farm.

Annie was chosen from a national shortlist of five farms, each selected

for demonstrating outstanding commitment to environmental practices, alongside the production of food.

Joe Martin, chairman of the group’s association, said: “This longstanding national award, now in its 38th year, celebrates the environmental achievements of farmers. It showcases just what can be achieved on a typical farm with passion, dedication and sound, independent farm advice.

We hope the award will inspire farmers to go on to achieve great things for wildlife on their own farms.”

Paythorne Farm, farmed by Annie and her manager David Ellin, covers about 1,400 acres of which 1,000 is on the top of the South Downs and the remainder at the bottom which comprises areas of both clay and greensand. This bottom land is enhanced by field margins, good hedges and careful management of water courses.

Check your wiring plea from firefighters Jamie Chappell conquers caves and wins praise Residents of West Sussex are being urged to check their electrical equipment after a frayed cable caused a fire in a house.

No-one was hurt in the incident in the incident, when an electrical cable running under a bed became worn and started a small blaze in a bedroom.

New scout Jamie Chappell conquered more than the usual challenges when he went exploring caves.

The determined 11-year-old from Rudgwick lives with cerebral palsy so the trip to the Mendips was a testing one.

But the Rudgwick Primary School pupil won the admiration of his family and the Ist Rudgwick scouts with his attitude.

Tony Radmall, a member of the West Sussex County Caving Team, told the Post: "Scouting is about being inclusive, so when a caving trip came up, we knew we could offer him a chance to include him in some way, confident with the caving expertise we have.

"After discussion with his parents Jamie and the other scouts drove to the Mendips for a caving weekend.

On Saturday, with excitement at levels high, Simon Brew and myself helped Jamie, while Chris Bush helped the rest of the group. Four hours later we emerged.

"Jamie was tired but wearing the most enormous grin you have ever seen. Sunday was a harder cave with water. He was offered an easy way out but no, he wanted to challenge himself.

"Rudgwick Scout leaders Simon and Chris make an outstanding team, wanting the best possible adventure for Jamie. I’ve had many brilliant times in caving, but this ranked up there with the best of them. Reminding me there is no "i" in team, there is no "i" in scout. " Jamie said: “Before I went caving I was a little bit worried whether I would be able to keep up with all my friends in the caves. When I first saw the caves on the Saturday morning I felt really scared but it turned out to be great fun. My favourite part of the trip was the second cave we went in because it was really wet. It was challenging at times but Simon, Badger (Tony Radmall) and Chris helped me when I needed it. I can’t wait to go again next year."

Jamie's mother Gemma said: "“Jamie had major surgery just over three years ago that has seen him transition from a wheelchairwalking frame to walking with crutches amongst other phenomenal achievements. I am so proud of Jamie for all his achievements and his smiley, optimistic attitude that he injects into everything he does and really thankful to all of the scouting-caving team for making this opportunity possible for Jamie."

Soldier’s war medals return to home town History fans will be able to see Victorian Afghan War medals earned by a Horsham soldier after the town’s museum bought them.

The Friends of Horsham Museum have been revealed as mystery purchasers from a sale at Spinks in London.

They bought the medals after it was shown by Rudgwick local historian Roger Nash that they were awarded to James Edwards, who was a Horsham resident, and not a son of Rudgwick as once believed.

Roger discovered James was also known in the records as Jabez Edwards, born in 1833 and recorded in the 1841 census and the 1851 census where he is listed as an agricultural labourer and pauper.

Poverty might have driven him to join the Army, or purely a desire to serve. Either way it is doubtful when he signed up that he imagined that

he would serve in Victorian India with the magnificent opulence of the Indian princes and chronic poverty.

From serving in India he then moved on to Afghanistan, and both places were totally outside the experiences he would have known in rural Horsham.

He re-appeared in the 1891 census as an army pensioner living with Walter Bennett, a railway navvy, and family in Prospect Place, dying eight years later. Horsham Museum says it wanted these medals to complement its collections of Indian and Afghan weapons acquired during the years of conflict.

The medals will be going on display in the refurbished Horsham Gallery at the museum. A museum spokesman said it was grateful to the Friends of Horsham Museum for buying the medals and Roger Nash for his detailed research.

Shoppers got a taste of the once formidable Napoleon army in Horsham town centre on Saturday.

They took a break from trudging around stores bargain hunting to admire the outfits and the disciplined drill of the 45e Regimente Infanterie de Ligne, a French Napoleonic reenactment group of English enthusiasts.

Wild & quirky weedend in Hancock helps celebrate restoration store at Floral Fringe Fair Actor Sheila Hancock, CBE, will attend the celebration for the reopening of the restored historic Blue Idol Quaker Meeting House near Coolham.

The weekend of June 26– June 28 will mark the return of the Quakers since the building was left unoccupied when the builders moved in. Sheila, a Quaker and also an author, will attend on the Saturday.

The restoration began with the need to repair the roof, then the west wall was found to be in need of complete overhaul. Later the drains, the electricity and the boiler all needed work.

Susan Richardson a Friend at the Blue Idol, who has helped oversee the work, said: ‘It has sometimes felt never-ending.

Visitors to the Floral Fringe Fair on Saturday and Sunday are promised a mix of wildlife and vintage.

The fair is at Knepp Castle, Shipley, from 10.30 am to 5pm both days.

Organisers say the fair is quirky and eclectic.

The event specializes in good quality stalls from Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Hampshire and stallholders who have made what they sell and so are able to talk with firsthand knowledge about their product.

Entry is £6.50 each and children under 14 are free.

Anyone arriving in a classic or vintage pre-1975 will pay £5.50 each for the first two occupants, with classic and vintage vehicles having a specially allocated park-

ing area. This year there is a prize each day for the best-dressed-invintage-style visitor.

Knepp Castle is the subject of an unusual and nationally important “re-wilding” project and there will be the chance to learn more about this at the fair. Wildlife safaris have recently been launched on the estate and there may be a chance to sample a mini safari at the fair.

Kinder Living Show brings sustainable homes to Horsham Jenette Mercer & Julie Maxted

A brand new sustainable home show, the Kinder Living Show, took place for the first time in Horsham Saturday, May 16.

The show was the idea of local interior designer Jeanette Mercer of Fresh Traditions, who was looking for a show where she could have a stand to sell some of her colourful up-cycled furniture. Unable to find the right kind of show locally, she decided to create one.

The businesses involved were mainly small independent Sussex based firms, all offering eco-friendly products and services. They covered everything from architecture and building, heating and plumbing, to renovation and repair. “We were keen to give local homeowners the chance to ask questions and gather information in a friendly environ-

ment.

Lots of people feel they’d like to be a bit greener at home but it isn’t always easy to find information. Our show was all about encouraging people to do what they can when they can.”

The show included a competition for local schools, won by Slinfold Primary School, who will receive £150 to spend at Sussex Builder’s Merchants and Eco Centre Covers, who sponsored the competition. Local magazine publishers, Horsham Publications Ltd, sponsored the show.

There was also a ‘Donation Station’ collecting items such as used ink cartridges and old spectacles, that can be recycled by charities to raise funds. The show’s ‘Chari-Tea’ stand continued the theme, serving homemade cakes, Fair-trade tea

Profits from the Chari-Tea stand are going to Horsham Community Responders, a local charity with trained volunteers who support the ambulance service and help save lives in the local community.

Final figures for the recycling are not available yet, but the organisers hope around £200 will have been raised for Horsham Community Responders.

Simon says: “Ideas get harder to come by book after book but I keep my eyes and ears open and jot down any snippets of conversation I might overhear.

“I spend a lot of time reading newspapers of all varieties and have a scrapbook of clippings. My children have been invaluable, too. I’m currently trying to come up with an idea for the next contemporary book, but in the meantime have completed a comedy gothic murder mystery about a twelve year old cathedral chorister.”

To publicise Only We Know Simon is undertaking school visits and radio interviews. He was a professional actor appearing alongside Judi Dench and Omar Sharif and has performed locally with son Jon, notably in Billy Liar at the Capitol. Jon will soon be touring stately homes in a university production of The Comedy of Errors.

Singin’ in the rain success

More than 800 people defied a day of rain to help raise money for people with terminal illness.

Volunteers sang the old Fifties film hit “Singin’ in the Rain”, published in 1929, to surprised visitors to keep up spirits at the Garden and Local Produce Fair for St Catherines Hospice at South Lodge Hotel, near Horsham.

Sally Pavey, volunteer organizer, said: “We have to thank our visitors, stallholders, sponsors and volunteers that came and joined in the madness of the day and did not allow the rain to dampen their enjoyment at our new venue, the South Lodge Hotel.”

Paul Marquees brought glamour to the event with panoramic windowed marquee and chandeliers, a welcome venue in constant rain.

Sally said: “So many venues may have cancelled the fair due to the weather conditions but thanks to South Lodge we just carried on and their staff were amazing, dealing with barbequing in the rain”.

Kate Bush tribute act out Great turnout for The Shelley Ska Day to impress Horsham fans

Last Sunday saw the return of 'Skank Holiday Sunday' at Broadbridge Heath's local, The Shelley Arms.

The pub is well known for its open air live gigs and contribution to local charities, this year's chosen charity being The Dame Vera Lyn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy with who they raised well over £1,000 The event featured bands like the HotKnives, BigTopp and Stop Press, playing a selection of Ska, two tone and reggae hits.

With the BBQ sizzling and the drinks flowing, this event was a welcomed introduction to Summer 2015.

Bowls Jane Gray – Pulborough BC After a first half of the week to forget with a 66/81 scoreline in the County Cup at Pagham on Monday and 2 WSBL points, 83/40 and 0 points in the BML against Norfolk on Tuesday, you could forgive a little negativity in the Pulborough ranks, but they were quick to recover with an upbeat match against the highly skilled Torquay Tourists on Thursday.

The scorelines were close throughout, with Pulborough winning on 1 rink and drawing on a second. The top rink for Pulborough with 21/13 went to skip Paul Day, with Adrian Knight as lead and Jan Barnes as number 2. John Brown and team fought to stay ahead from end 5, but their opponents took a 4 on end 17 to pull back and equal the score by the 21st end. The final scoreline was 91/110 to the Tourists.

Friday saw the second away fixture in the West Sussex Bowls

League in the space of a week, this time at Chichester Priory. Pulborough held close scores on 2 out of 4 rinks, with top rink going to skip Matt Ives, supported by lead, M. Green, number 2 M. Gray and number 3 G. Ives 18/14. The final result was a further 2 league points to add to the Pulborough tally and a 61/90 scoreline.

The first home game of the week was against local rivals, Fittleworth on Saturday. For the first time this week, the sun shone on Pulborough and afforded them a victory with 2 rink wins and 3 points in hand. Top rink went to skip, Mike Richards, with lead, Jane Gray and number 2 Melvin Green 18/9. Malcolm Gray and team came in close behind with a win of 21/16 making the final result 48/45.

A welcome return for the Cawston Tourists from Norfolk and their mascot, Billy, on Sunday, heralded a fantastic day’s play that ended in a tight win for Pulborough.

5 rinks played over 21 ends with

a halfway break for tea. For 4 rinks, their fortunes stayed the same after the break with just skip Paul day and team being held to a draw and 1 rink with a narrow defeat. Top rink went to skip John Brown, number 1 Jane Gray, number 2 Joyce Woods and number 3 Hugh Hubbard 41/5.

Other wins came from Ivan Salmon and team 41/11 and Joyce Broadribb and team 18/15. The final score was 111/73 to Pulborough.

Tough opener for Horsham as last season’s achievements are celebrated Rugby

Following Horsham 1st XV’s promotion into London 2 South East the fixtures for 2015/16 have now been released. The step up has provided the opportunity to reacquaint with several clubs Horsham have not faced at this higher level for many years.

The opening game is on September 19 and will be a testing away fixture against old foes Tunbridge Wells, followed a week later by a home fixture against South London side, Old Colfeians.

The Green and Whites then make the trip to Bexley on October 3 to face fellow promoted side Dartfordians who were the only team to beat Horsham in the league last season.

Horsham do not face any of their Sussex rivals until they travel to Hove on October 24.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker said “This is a tough away trip to start with against potentially one of the league contenders and offers an opportunity to gauge where we are at immediately. The new level is a little leap into the unknown but the team is most definitely up for the challenge and are out to cause a few shocks. Pre-season training starts in early July.”

Horsham 2nd XV, known as the Lions, were also promoted last season and will play in the Sussex Spitfire League 1 next season. They open their league campaign a week earlier than their teammates in the 1st XV on 12 September away to Hove 2nd XV. This is followed a week later by a home fixture against Lewes 1st XV, a club that are rebuilding and until recently were playing a couple of leagues higher than Horsham 1st

XV. Horsham Rugby Club's achievements this season have been recognised at the annual Sussex RFU dinner. Former England prop forward Jason Leonard presented the club with the London SE 3 trophy and Ken Nicholls, the Sussex RFU President, also recognised the achievement of the club this season in winning the Bob Rogers Cup, the Lions being promoted and the Colts reaching the county cup final.

In summary Ken Nicholls said the improvements made at Horsham both on and off the field in the last year or two have been noticeable around the county and that in his opinion Horsham are the best run club in Sussex.

It was a fine tribute from the Sussex President that gives the club a lot to live up to but also gives all associated with Horsham Rugby Club a much deserved accolade and a terrific boost to take into next season.

Batting first Roffey’s opening 66 run stand (captain Josh Fleming 40) was a sound launch pad until a flurry of dismissals saw them slide to 115-4. But, Rohit Jagota, whose 91 featured 8 fours and 4 sixes, batting

first with Chris Webb (20) and Ben Manenti, 57, enabled Roffey to rattle up 253-6 declared, giving themselves three extra overs to bowl out Cuckfield.

In the reply, Steffan Piolet – playing despite being in Sussex’s T20 side at Taunton the night before and being in their squad for the four day game next day – was soon dismissed by Leigh Harrison before fellow opening bowler George Fleming (5-56) worked his way through the upper order assisted by Alex Collins (2-24) as Cuckfield slumped to 85-7 in the 26th over. Stands of 48 for the eighth wicket and 46 for the last were no more than minor irritants, Cuckfield succumbing 70 adrift with eleven overs unused.

George Fleming told The District Post: “The wicket was a bit unpredictable at one end, so we did well to declare on 253. Rohit was especially impressive and Ben batted well, too.

Cuckfield rallied towards the end but we were confident that we’d got more than enough to win. This season’s league results have been erratic but we’ve got a massive home game (tomorrow, Saturday May 30) against East Grinstead, they’re always strong so it’ll be a big test.”

On Sunday Roffey welcome Surrey’s Beddington in the England & Wales Cricket Board National Club Championship (knockout cup).

Having beaten Horsham twice last season Brighton are fast becoming a bogey side after winning again.

Successful at the toss the seasiders got off to a steady if unspectacular start, reaching 96-3 before Michael Munday (5-69), back in top form, relentlessly worked his way through the middle order in tandem with Ben Shoare, 4-28. Several of the visiting batsmen built promising platforms but only Phillip Salt, whose attacking 75 included 9 fours and 2 sixes and a range of attractive strokes went on to make a telling contribution. Last year he scored a double century for the Sussex Development XI at Cricketfield Road and said: “I like batting here! But it was frustrating to get out

when I was going well.” Brighton’s strength is their seam bowling and the wicket was conducive to spin, giving Horsham hope – until the fragility of their batting was again exposed. Matt Wood (4-39) and former Dorset player Henry Turner, extracting more life from the pitch than anyone else, bowled the first 32 overs together as Horsham subsided to 69-5. Captain Sam Attfield subsequently batted for 103 minutes and Craig Gallagher scoring 31, Nathan Roberts 41 and Matt Simpson 23, also showed resistance, but there was to be no salvation from 100-7, Horsham finally expiring five and a half overs short of their allocation.

Visiting skipper Chris Atherton said: “We’ve got a good side and usually play well at home, so it was good to win away, too. I expect us to finish in the top three. We’ve got the Indian sign over Horsham – let’s keep that going!”

Tomorrow (Saturday May 30) Horsham visit Billingshurst.

Sussex’s Chris Liddle accounted for a Bexhill opener and Andy Barr (2-45) snared the other to reduce them to 21-2 and at 42-3 the hosts were wobbling. But, they recovered with a 62

run stand until captain Ben Williams, again the most productive bowler – with 4-51 – and Dhanushka Mitipolaarachchi (2-61) scythed through the middle and lower order, only for a frustrating unbroken last wicket 33 run stand to enable the hosts to declare on 202-9.

With 53 overs to get the runs Billingshurst were soon in deep trouble at 7-3. Dhanushka, 20, and Chris Liddle (47) steadied the ship and on their demise Jon Alexander and Andy Barr mounted some resistance, but wickets fell steadily, all rounder Dean Crawford being the chief destroyer with a miserly 6-26 from 13.1 overs, Hurst sliding to 123 all out.

Skipper Ben Williams said: “The toss proved to be crucial because the

wicket got slower and slower. We bowled well but things didn’t quite go our way in the field. Then we lost early wickets again and by getting off to such a poor start we made life too difficult for ourselves. They bowled well, not giving us anything but our batting let us down again and we’ll be reviewing our options. We can’t complain because they played better on the day, but it was disappointing.”

In the first local derby of the season Billingshurst entertain Horsham at Jubilee Fields tomorrow (Saturday May 30) and with both sides struggling for runs but bowling better an intriguing contest is in prospect.

Freddie Flintoff returns to Horsham Cricket

'Freddie' Flintoff will entertain at The Capitol

Andrew Flintoff – universally called Freddie after the Flintstones character – comes to Horsham’s Capitol theatre on June 4 on the second leg of his 28 gig tour with his friend, TV producer and writer Clyde Holcroft.

Freddie says: “We hope the tour will be a lot of laughs and an excuse for us to talk about life and the lighter side of cricket.” That is a given! Freddie’s highly entertaining cricket exploits are still fresh in the memory: five Test centuries and almost 16,000 runs and well over 600 wickets in all formats. Various players were selected to fill the allrounder spot vacated by Ian Botham but only Freddie provided a genuine replacement, his destructive batting and “go to” bowling beloved by captains when a game changer was urgently required. In one day mode he was often devastating, David Gower describing Freddie’s Nat-

Strings of top awards accompanied Freddie’s MBE and installation as BBC Sports Personality, recognising his sporting spirit as well as his achievements. A miraculous recent comeback was much savoured but now that Freddie finally seems to have retired from professional cricket he is forging an increasingly versatile but equally captivating career in entertainment. Many sportsmen struggle when playing finishes, but Freddie’s new even more versatile role is proving him to be an equally dependable and entertaining performer in the glare of the footlights – winner of Australia’s King of the Jungle, TV and radio presenter, touring Britain in his bespoke fish and chip van, documentaries, team captain in the BAFTA winning ‘A League of Their Own’, male model, commentator, newspaper columnist and prize-win-

ning boxer are some recent highly popular ventures. “Failing isn’t a problem – but not having a go is a crime”, Freddie says.

Did Freddie ever play cricket at Horsham? “Yes! I played for England U19s against a Sussex XI – the smaller grounds are nice venues and it’s great to be close to the crowd.”

The scorecard revealed that even in 1995 Freddie’s batting was a force to be reckoned with, he top scored.

Freddie told the District Post: “My wife hails from Sussex so I spend a fair bit of time here and I’ve just been with Luke Wright’s father and brother at an Ardingly College Cricket Academy camp. It was great working with the kids.” Does Freddie miss cricket? “At the moment I’m busy but I’m sure I’ll miss it when I’m 70. My two lad’s play, so does my brother and my 65 year old dad is still turning out. I’ll play a few games for my original club, St Annes if tour commitments permit.” Nothing is more certain that larger-than-life Freddie will give his all, whatever future opportunities open up for him – and we shall all feel much the better after enjoying his new challenges.

Variety the spice of life Spring flings with Horsham Cycling for Horsham Joggers Cycling Martin Read – Sports Reporter

Neil Boniface came second in the 5k Athletics Philip Liberman – Horsham Joggers Last weekend saw some great performances from Horsham Joggers in a variety of events.

Neil Boniface came 2nd in the 5k at the Sussex track & field championships in 15.05, while at the other end of the spectrum Graham Clarke completed the London to Brighton 100K run in 11 hours.

In between these two heroic feats there was a multitude of other races with some fine performances.

At the Rye 10 mile Tony Johnson finished in 1.11.36 followed by Matt Payne (1.18.25) Alan Petitt (1.19.28) and Julia Johnson (1.27.42).

The Weald Challenge is a set of 3 races, an Ultra 50K, a marathon

and a half marathon. Joggers had runners in the Ultra (Helen Woods 6.12.50) and the Half marathon (Ryan Stokes 1.58.32 Beck Howard 2.31.39 Fiona Clifton 2.36.06 Elizabeth Scott 2.37.53 & Caroline Bransden 2.42.24).

Finally, last Wednesday evening 34 Horsham Joggers took part in the West Sussex Fun Run League fixture in Littlehampton which is a beautiful and a little unusual 5 mile beach run. Horsham Joggers team finished 5th overall with some great performances on a beautiful evening.

The first five Joggers home were: Tiarnan Cotter 28:34, Paul Adams 31:21, Mal Thornton 31:47, Raff Vitale 33:10 and Philip Liberman 36:20.

Horsham Cycling's activities continue throughout the year but really take off in spring.

Last month 30 members celebrated the Club's tenth anniversary with a 170 mile weekend round trip to Canterbury, staying overnight at the University, with some members completing their longest two days of consecutive cycling.

This month was the Club's annual Social Time Trial, where members are encouraged to forsake their racing bikes and lycra for more unusual machines - and fancy dress. Over a ten mile course at Okewood Hill, an Angel, Country Gent, Dracula and Teddy Bear were just some of the featured costumes with fully loaded touring bikes, mountain bikes, child carrier and single speeds on display.

The awards presentation and lunch at The Punchbowl Inn matched the spirit of the occasion, Stewart Salt and Ray Watson earning special credit for their respective rides on a Dutch bicycle and a tricycle. The fastest rider on the day was Tim Peters in his Bernard Hinault (the badger) fancy dress.

Fast approaching are the ten year anniversary post-ride lunch, the London-Dunwich Dynamo, Social Groups' downhill competition, Prudential London Ride and the Isle of Wight weekend.
