A university in Horsham? University of Brighton in talks with Novartis to acquire its former site

I

t was revealed on Monday, January 26, that there are negotiations ongoing between Novartis and the University of Brighton over the sale of the former site in Horsham of the pharmaceutical giant whose operations ceased in Horsham last year. The University of Brighton could build another campus on the site at Wimblehurst Road if the deal is agreed. The university plans to open an innovative, high-quality centre for higher education in Horsham that will give a major boost to jobs, skills and business opportunities in the Gatwick Diamond area. The university estimates the centre could create an estimated 2,250 new jobs and bring £1.7bn of investment to the region over 10 years, and provide around 3,500 places for students. A spokesperson for Novartis said: “We are delighted to be able to confirm that we are entering into exclusive negotiations with the University of Brighton for the sale of our former Horsham site. This is still subject to the usual negotiations when trying to agree a contract, but the University’s proposal offers an exciting opportunity which could bring long term benefits to the town and local residents, as well as realise our ambition in leaving a scientific legacy at the site. “We will now work closely with the University and Horsham District Continued on page 3

We recently reported on changes put forward by the planning inspector to the Horsham District Planning Framework (HDPF) which stated a higher level of housing is required, pushing the figure up to 750 homes per year. The North Horsham site was proposed for development back in 2009, at this time North Horsham Parish Council objected and another 26 comments were received, most of which were objections. If this was the case 6 years ago why were the brakes not put on this development back then? Liberty became involved in 2010, at this time Horsham District Council (HDC) could have decided to not allocate the land, however this would not have prevented Liberty from pursuing the application. The critical issue being that Horsham District has a 5 Year Housing Land Supply shortfall, this makes defending against or refusing even controversial housing schemes virtually impossible. In 2011, the then Leader of Council presented well progressed plans for the North Horsham site to a number of Conservative members for the first time at a scheduled meeting. The then proposed plan was 4,000 to 4,500 dwellings plus land set aside for a hospital. Following the enactment of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) in March 2012, and the Clinical Commission Group’s (CCG) decision not to provide the hospital those previous supporters of North Horsham seemed to make a U-turn.

Protesters at the North Horsham site Did HDC have another opportunity to stop the development at this point? Could they have decided not to allocate the land? Yes, but that would not have stopped Liberty their plans were too far advanced, the 5 Year Housing Land Supply shortfall still exists and government policy (NPPF) is on their side. As to the HDPF what were HDC Members initial thoughts as to housing numbers? Early Member discussions suggested around 11,500 dwellings for the district over 20 years, 1,000 of which could have gone to North Horsham; following The Inspector’s Examination of the HDPF that number has now increased to at least 15,000 in the same time frame. HDC’s initial conclusion is that they can accommodate roughly half the extra houses. The Inspector has stated he favours development

News Benjamin Coren newsdesk@thedistrictpost.co.uk

around Horsham, Southwater and Billingshurst. The inspector also stated the red lines should not be breached at the North Horsham site, so the only change could only be to increase density within the permitted 10% margin. The inspector has set a timetable for work that Councils need to do. Any delay over this process on the Council’s part could see developers submitting further damaging ad hoc applications across the District. Accepting that North Horsham now cannot be stopped, is HDC’s task to make the best of a bad job? Sadly yes, importantly HDC must ensure the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and the section 106 values are set at the correct levels and that it captures the best possible level of community benefit and infrastructure in order to make such a development even tolerable.

Looking at the facts presented, here, if North Horsham is seen now as so unacceptable, why did the 2007-2011 administration not kill it off in 2009 when it had the chance? Did the 2007-2011 administration take a gamble with our future lifestyle and environment on the promise of a possible hospital and lose? Finally, there have been many campaigns and attacks launched upon the “so-called architects” of North Horsham, most of whom were not even elected until 2011, this being the case were those attacks ever justified? Horsham District Council is currently working on changes to its strategy, a report on where additional new homes will be accommodated will go to meeting on March 18. Subject to Council approval, consultation on the amendments to the Council strategy will take place between March 23, and May 5.

These discussions are at an early stage, but if the sale goes ahead, we plan to open an innovative, high-quality centre for higher education that will give a major boost to jobs, skills and business opportunities in the Gatwick Diamond area. “We will be working closely with Horsham District Council and the Coast to Capital Local Economic Partnership, as well as local business, schools and colleges, to ensure our plans develop in a way that benefits the local economy and the local community.” Councillor Ray Dawe, leader of Horsham District Council, said: “We are delighted that the University of Brighton has chosen the district of Horsham to build a centre for higher education. A university on the former Novartis site would be a fitting legacy for one of the largest healthcare groups in the world, and would bring a new dimension to what our district has to offer. “A university would hold a prominent role in the community and

On Tuesday, January 20, Horsham District Council refused planning permission for both a new ground for Horsham Football Club (HFC) at Hop Oast and the Croudace development at The Holbrook Club site. A spokesperson on behalf of the directors of The Holbrook Club said: “How HFC will respond to this is unclear, but whether they eventually get permission or not will have a limited impact on the future of The Holbrook Club. “We are thriving independent ‘not-for-profit’ community club, with over 2000 members, providing sports and social facilities for the benefit of Holbrook and Horsham residents. Our only relationship with HFC is that of landlord and tenant. “Recent reports, in some local press, have incorrectly suggested that the future of The Holbrook Club is in doubt. Members can rest assured that The Holbrook Club has a strong tenancy position at the ground and it will be business as usual for the foreseeable future.” On Monday, January 26, work began at The Holbrook Club on converting two tennis courts into two 3G five-a-side pitches and is expected to be competed in around three weeks. Although the £200,00 contribution from HFC will no longer be received, work will still go ahead on new facilities for the club. The Holbrook Club said: “The investment in two new floodlit pitches, featuring a top-class 3G artificial grass playing surface, demonstrates

our long term commitment to developing a full range of facilities for our members and their guests to enjoy.”

would add significantly to the economic growth, job creation and skills development across the district and would greatly support the 75,000 businesses and enterprises that already exist within the Gatwick Diamond. We already know that we lose many students to higher education colleges elsewhere so the prospect of retaining our young people in the borough is very exciting.” Councillor Jim Rae, Holbrook East Ward said: “First let me say it would be great news for Holbrook East, Horsham town and the District if Horsham District Council were able to attract a campus of Brighton University onto the Novartis site. “I am fully aware of and would certainly welcome the very obvious fiscal and reputational upsides for our District such a development would bring, but without ever wishing to sound negative I also want us to look on the other side of the coin. “Such a campus will, as seen in other University towns bring with it significant social and environmental challenges, challenges that need to be understood and then worked through with the University and other agencies; to ensure we capture the obvious benefits but we must also ensure our existing residents are not adversely affected by such a scheme”.

Increased support Horsham Sports Club for the Hornets announce new President Home4Horsham Dave Smith Sports Editor Following the vote against the planning application for a new home ground for Horsham FC at Hop Oast by thirteen Horsham councillors on Tuesday January 20 the reaction in support of the club on social media sites has grown greatly since the application was refused. Many of the Twitter comments from the supporters of the application are questions aimed directly at the councillors that voted against the proposed development on the night. Until the full reasons for refusal are released and published on February 2, no formal action in the shape of an appeal by Croudace Homes and Horsham FC will be taken. However based on comments from club Chairman Kevin Borrett and CEO John Lines both stating that they will fight on, this coupled with the apparent increased public support makes an appeal very likely. Councillor Jim Rae (Con, Hol-

brook East), who was one of the nine councillors who voted in favour of the application, said to The District Post “I will be urging both Croudace and the board of Horsham FC to go to appeal. I believe the appeal would have a very good chance of succeeding considering that the original application was recommended for approval by Horsham District Council Planning Officers, after full consultation with WSCC Highways regarding Worthing Road, the access to the proposed new ground and the highly significant Planning Condition placed upon attendance numbers capacity to align spectator capacity to the WSCC Highways accepted Travel Plan” In addition to the social media response Horsham FC Commercial Director Andy Thompson spoke about the plight of the club on BBC Radio 5 Live last Sunday and on the same day the club reached 2,000 signatures of support on their online petition. The number of signatures on the online petition has since risen to 2,400.

Horsham Sports Club are delighted that former Sussex cricket captain John Barclay has agreed to become their new President. In his acceptance speech at the Annual General Meeting, three days ahead of his 61st birthday, Mr Barclay told members that they are so lucky to have such a jewel of a ground at Cricketfield Road and said that he was honoured to accept the club’s invitation. He recalled his earliest cricket memory of, when living in the Causeway as a five year old, he walked across the ground with Dr John Dew from whom he learned to play, saying that he had the greatest respect for the club’s former captain and long term President. The tuition certainly paid dividends - as an all rounder John Barclay’s prowess took him into the Eton XI at age 14 and the Sussex county side just two years later, while still at school. After skippering young England in the West Indies he went on to become an out-

standing county captain – almost piloting Sussex to their first championship - and was mentioned as a candidate for the England job. In a total of 510 first class and one day matches he scored over 12,000 runs and took almost 500 wickets for Sussex – including, more than once, the much prized scalps of Viv Richards and Ian Botham - and also represented Hong Kong and Orange Free State. After retirement John

managed England tours abroad, became Director of Cricket and Coaching for the Arundel Castle Cricket Foundation, a role he continues to relish, focussing on the development and education of disadvantaged and deprived young people, especially from inner city boroughs. The charity hosts some 40 group visits a year with around 600 disabled children enjoying both the special Arundel experience and trips to the nearby coast. John Barclay has been President of the MCC, holds a number of other cricket related posts and has also written captivating, perceptive, self-effacing witty books, likened to the style of Alan Bennett. These include an autobiography, forewarded by Michael Atherton, and other books on the game. But there is much more to busy locally based John Barclay than just cricket: he is one of the Deputy Lieutenants of Sussex, a role he shares with Sally Gunnell, yet finds time to satisfy his great love of fishing. He has vowed to give Horsham Sports Club all possible support and the club are certain that his expertise and standing throughout the county and beyond will add enormous value.

Brave Ellie Mae has VIP Downing Street visit

Donna Air, Ellie Mae Wile-Dunne, Sara Cox and Rochelle Hume Six-year-old Horsham schoolgirl Ellie Mae Wile-Dunne was guest of honour at a special reception, hosted by Samantha Cameron, to launch Cancer Research UK’s inspiring new fundraising campaign Kids & Teens. Ellie Mae, who learned to walk again after receiving cancer treatment, enjoyed a VIP visit to Downing Street along with 20 other youngsters from across the UK – all diagnosed with cancer – who visited Number 10 to have their bravery recognised and help raise awareness. They also met celebrities and enjoyed a sight-seeing tour of London as part of their VIP experience on Tuesday January 20. Figures released this week show that progress in treating the disease has led to a drop in deaths among youngsters aged 24 and under, from

around 1300 deaths each year in the mid-1970s to around 550 today, the disease however remains the biggest killer of youngsters in the UK. Cancer Research UK is calling on people in Sussex to donate to beat childhood cancers sooner and help save more lives like Ellie Mae’s. Helen Johnstone, Cancer Research UK spokesperson for the South East, said: “It’s hugely encouraging to see deaths for children’s cancers falling steadily. But we must make faster progress to save more lives, so we’re extremely grateful for the support of the Wile-Dunne family and Samantha Cameron in helping to highlight the power of research in beating the disease.” Ellie Mae’s mother Nikki said: “Ellie Mae endured months of treatment with unbelievable strength and resilience. I couldn’t be prouder

Ellie Mae Wile-Dunne

of her so I’m delighted that his courage has been honoured with such a fantastic day, especially when she has missed out on so much. Going to 10 Downing Street was an unforgettable experience for so many reasons, but most importantly because through supporting Cancer Research UK we can help to spare other children and families from this devastating disease in future. Success stories like Ellie Mae’s would not be possible without the charity’s life-saving work, which in turn relies on everyone who raises funds, so we hope people in Sussex will really get behind this crucial campaign.” To support Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens text KIDS3 to 70200 to donate £37 or for more information about the campaign visit cruk.org/ kidsandteens.

A game of buzzword bingo nik butler @loudmouthman

Online conversations regarding change in Horsham are beginning to look like a game of buzzword bingo. We have reached the point where no discussion is possible without one of a number of keywords being dropped into the debate; either to derail or reinforce a particular line of thought. Appeals for “infrastructure” are most frequently repeated; no matter the discussion what we lack is infrastructure. I guess the question I should ask is just what infrastructure it is they feel is needed and in what order? Then again the second most overused term which fits into the category of infrastructure is: a Hospital. When the hospital card is played it is difficult to define exactly what is lacking. Given the large swathe of terminology rendered by primary care trusts and other care type organisations one might be forgiven for all the issue fogging which occurs when asking for a Hospital. Therefore Accident & Emergency services pop up as an adjunct to the demand. At this point the buzzword bingo deteriorates into appeals for reason as more schools, more roads, increased water, and so forth

are expected. Again none of these are invalid issues but the question begins to arise why they are so often used to undermine or detract from propositions when provided. Finally out of all of these comes the demand that we must have our ‘priorities’ straight. Here the suggestion becomes one that the debate has not been framed in terms of appropriate significance, especially in regards priorities of the poster who suggested it.’ You might think issues like these would have been addressed in some sort of District Framework available for public scrutiny and consultation. That I have never seen anyone link to such documents in online debates may highlight just how poor the public perception of such documentation and consultation has become. Yet daily the roundabout of public dissent will circle from housing, to football, to hospital, to infrastructure, to priorities. At this time of consideration for digital democracy it might be the perfect opportunity to begin to connect the physical framework and strategy documents into the ongoing public debates. We should ensure that public communications are not driven by the need to control the message but from a willingness to answer questions where they are being asked. If we line up council communication with online discussions it is possible we might experience that moment of ‘bingo!’

Steyning student’s complete local area based project Steyning Grammar School’s Project Based Learning task this term is to research the area they live in and to come up with proposals for a celebration. Last week Year 7 pupils displayed proposals for events to ‘Celebrate the parish they live in’ to a group of councillors who represent the local surrounding parishes. Michelle Stokes, Steyning Grammar School’s Project Based Learning teacher said: “Students were asked to present their research in a way that was creative and interesting with a display for councillors to judge. Students were asked to include a cost analysis and conduct some market research into the viability of their proposals.” The overall winner of the Henfield parish was Freya TaylorLester, whose idea was a video to capture ‘A day in the life of Henfield’. The judges thought that this idea and the display were first rate. Ben Neal received a joint second award with his very original idea for an event called ‘The Big Comparison’, councillors partic-

practical idea for a welcome sign for Small Dole, along with a very original idea for a ‘St Cupcakes Day!’ – a good play on words for a St Cuthman’s day celebration which judges thought would make a great annual event. Student Jodie Tyler who had the idea for an ‘Upper Beeding Tea and Walk’ said: “I enjoyed being able to decide my own ideas for a celebration on where I lived. I did a little bit of research each day at school during lesson times and I really enjoyed it.”

‘Different views should be accepted, debated and voted upon’ Cllr Brian O’Connell Chairman of Horsham District Council

I

would first of all like to wish all readers of the District Post a very Happy New Year. I have many things to update you with since my last column at the beginning of November. (In December I wrote about the Chairman’s Charity Ball). 2014 was a very busy year for Councillors in Horsham, with many huge decisions having to be made which will result in major changes within the district one way and another. As all Councillors know that despite best efforts and endeavours to do the best for the constituents they represent, they will never please everybody. For some they will be heroes and for others villains. However, each Councillor must consider all arguments for and against and vote with a clear conscious that the decision they are voting for is correct and the best decision at that time for the Horsham district and then for their local constituents. It is often very difficult to come terms with the fact that Councillors are primarily Horsham District Councillors who represent their locality within the district. Then despite all this turmoil and soul searching, democracy will prevail and the majority will win the day which may not be the option you voted for in the first place. Then you ask yourself was it all worth it? The answer must always be YES! It is only with input of many different points of view, opinions, meaningful discussions and debate that any decision can be classed as

a good decision. It upsets me when I see Councillors or residents of the district being vilified and personal abuse being levied for having a different opinion or point of view from the majority. Different views should be accepted, debated, voted upon and then the majority decision respected and honoured. That is a real democratic society and Horsham is much richer for having one. Which brings me to the main events I attended in November - the memorial services in commemoration of the World Wars. This year being especially poignant as it was the 100 year anniversary of the First World War. The service at the Carfax was attended by all ages and it was reported that it was one of the biggest crowds in recent years. Prayers were said by the Rev Guy Bridgewater and the British Legion had a big turnout. A very moving tribute to those who gave their lives. As well as remembering the heroes who died we must never forget those that survived the wars. They came home with the scars of war and have had to live with unimaginable mental scars and memories and we must also remember those that supported these victims and cared for them. These carers are also silent heroes. Then on Armistice day we had another service at the Carfax and this was also attended by children from St Mary’s Church of England School, Horsham. This was particularly appropriate as these children are the very reason that so many gave their lives - that they, like us, can live in freedom. My next engagement was at an Open Day given by The University of the Third Age (U3A). This was held at the Holbrook Club. This is truly an amazing organisation which

provides opportunities for people to partake of numerous different activities, experience different hobbies, try their hand at new skills and to make new friends in the comfort of somebody’s home. This is a must if you are retired or have time on your hands and would like to some do something of interest. Also, you may have skills which might be of interest to other people and you could form your own group within U3A to teach people. Everybody has life skills and experiences which could benefit somebody else. Many social events and trips are also organised for the whole group. If you are interested see the web site. As December rolled in bringing the year to a close I attended

many church and carol services and functions all fundraising events for many worthy causes across the county. Here in Horsham I organised a Charity Ball which you will have seen the details of in my December column. It was a huge success raised over £7,000 for families in need across the Horsham district. To everybody that contributed in anyway or made a donation, once again, I offer my sincere thanks and would confirm that we distributed nearly £5,000 to these families before the Christmas holiday. January brings us all back down to earth with a bang, back to work, more meetings and cold and horrible weather. Still every day is a day nearer Spring.

T

his week we take a trip down memory lane and look at the location of the old Roffey camp. Located on the Crawley road, Roffey, opposite All Saints Church, by the end of the 19th century Roffey was home to a workhouse, a reading room, a working men’s club, a school and a parade of shops. The military camp and hospital

was built on the former site of the workhouse in 1916 and later became a psychiatric hospital. Today all that remains from the original photo is the tree and it has now become housing. Ladies networking group launching for Horsham Benjamin Coren Business Reporter Are you a female executive or entrepreneur, either setting up a new business or looking to increase your business network? The Athena Network could be for you and local businesswoman Emma Watkins is setting up a local branch in Handcross, West Sussex. Emma Watkins, regional director for the Athena Network in West Sussex runs networking groups for women and is excited for the launch of the brand new group on February 10, which will serve the Horsham area. The group enables women in business to build their business through networking, take part in regular business development training, learn how to network and to develop relationships and contacts gained through networking. The new Handcross group will run lunchtime groups and support local businesswomen and entrepreneurs. Emma Watkins said: “People in local business often run their business from home or have a small office which can mean working alone. Here we have people from a number of different professions and we use each other to pass business and we create our own support network.

“Having connections like this when you start a small business is very important. It’s an opportunity to get out there and meet likeminded people.” Emma started running Athena networking groups last year. The Athena Network is now in its 10th year and now has over 3,000 members across seven countries. Every Athena group meeting is divided up into meeting and networking, networking strategy and business development training, and guests are finally given the opportunity to talk to the group about any business referrals they might have for one another. This is also a chance for members to share success stories or give testimonials for other members. Emma said: “Ladies who join can take a small business to the next level. Last year I met a number of publishers through the net-

You launched your own business a year or so ago. You have met all your early objectives and things are going well. How do you stay on course and keep up the level of excitement and achievement? And what is the next step? Back to basics 12 months on is a good moment to take stock, but the key is do it regularly. Look at your initial objectives again. Remind yourself why you started your business. Compare where you are now with where you were 12 months ago. Are you still going in the direction you first planned or have things changed? Decisions to take If you have diverged from your original plan, should you modify it to take account of the way things have worked out, or should you put yourself back on track? You may have discovered that your original vision, the dream, is not feasible in practice. For example, you may have trained as a car mechanic and set up a business to

service your favourite cars, MG’s. However, in the course of the year people have asked you to service other cars and rather than turn away any business at this early stage, you have taken on the work. The result is that though you have plenty of work, and you enjoy it, not much of it is on MG’s. Does this bother you? Should you make a determined effort to return to your plan of servicing only MG’s? Or should you alter course and service any cars? It’s important to take stock and make a positive decision one way or the other. There is nothing wrong with altering your original plan, but you want to avoid just allowing yourself to drift into a new direction without acknowledging it. Why? Well, if you let things drift you may find yourself getting sucked into a situation where the business has taken you over and you aren’t in control. Reassess where you are to avoid chaos. Either recognise that servicing any car suits you fine and rework your business plan an that premise, or fight the currents pulling you that way and return to the goal of servicing just MGs. Working on the business One year on is also a good point to assess how much you are putting into, and how much you are getting

Trinity Church Players to perform Sleeping Beauty Trinity Church Players Theatre Company Trinity Church Players (TCP) will be performing their annual pantomime at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Rushams Road at 7.30pm on Friday, January 30, and at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, January 31. This year’s panto is Sleeping Beauty, written by a group of TCP members - The Brothers Dimm. It will have all the usual elements, a large cast, great songs, sweet throwing, colourful costumes and general mayhem. Add to that some Disney Princesses, an ageing Hansel and Gretel, and a talking lamppost and you have a highly entertaining tale. Leader Jane O’Sullivan said: “Lynn Andrews and I have been putting on Trinity Church Players pantomimes for over 20 years and the group goes from strength to strength. We have a large cast of varying ages and we all work together the weekend before the show to build the stage from scratch. “TCP are a really sociable group so we have lots of laughs whilst managing to entertain our local community and raise good sums for the church and various charities. Just before Christmas 30 of us went carol singing round the local streets and in two hours raised £262 for Shooting Stars CHASE - the children’s hospice. “Proceeds from the pantomime will be split evenly between Street Life - a local charity supporting street children in India, and Holy Trinity Church funds.” There will be a bar selling wine and soft drinks before each per-

There’s plenty of audience interaction, and even a dose of Hokey Cokey to join in with, not to mention the chance to win a coveted Beans on Toast t-shirt! Tomfoolery is the South East’s

Millais hold annual panto On the last day of term, lessons were suspended as staff and prefects presented the annual pantomime to all pupils. This involved three performances of audience participation in the exciting tale of Dick Whittington and his famous cat – not like this, like that! Costumes and sound effects all added to the magic of a traditional pantomime story. In the end, with

the aid of Fairy Nuff and Fairy Snow, the much booed King Rat and his rat gang were changed and became very kind! Dick Whittington became Lord Mayor of London, hurray, and won the hand of Alice Fitzwarren, ahhh. Everyone joined in enthusiastically with the final song Jingle Bell Rock to bring our pantomime to a successful and happy end.

Bluecoat Sports Top 3 Tips for that New Year’s Resolution Expect setbacks

1

No matter how hard we try there will always be periods of time when our training doesn’t go to plan. Our diaries get interrupted, the cat needed an urgent trip to the vet, you got roped into taking the mother-in-law on a shopping trip, or you just quite simply are working to damn hard to find a

Set SMART goals

2

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. Vague goals are difficult to achieve, for example “run more” or “lose weight”. How will you know when you have got there? How will you track your progress? Make your goals more specific and you

spare 90 minutes in your day. Our advice to you is this – do not give up! It can be easy to get discouraged and to completely write off your exercise for the day – but this when you need to stay motivated! Every bit of progress you make towards your goal really does count, no matter how small. So even when you can’t find the time to make it to the gym and achieve all you wanted to, at least achieve something

will find it easier to get on the road to better fitness, and stay there. Once you have achieved your goal, you can then re-asses where you want to be and set a new one. “I will bench press an extra pound every week from January 1st until I can bench press my own body-weight” and “Starting on Monday I will run a total of 60 minutes per week for the next 3 months” are examples of SMART goals.

Share resolutions

3

Don’t keep your New Year’s resolution to yourself. Sharing your goals with your family and friends can be a powerful motivational tool to push you through to goal accomplishment. Having those closest to you in on your plans can mean daily, invaluable support and assistance. You may even find that they’re willing to modify their own lives, at least temporarily, to help out. What’s more, just the fact that you’ve confided in them is a powerful motivator for helping you remain consistent and persistent. You can also share your actual workouts by getting a workout buddy or even hiring a personal trainer.

I joined Bluecoat Sports as a massively unconfident large lady on a huge mission to get fit and lose weight. I always thought I was too fat to exercise and did not want to join any classes or go to the gym. I decided I would start swimming and went down to take a look at the pool at Bluecoat Sports as I had heard good things. After having an initial tour by such a lovely member of staff who made me feel extremely comfortable in their environment, I decided I needed to give things a proper go! I started with a couple of classes a week and as I realised how lovely, friendly, professional, approachable and ‘real’ the instructors were, I was soon attending 5 classes a week. Even on the weeks where I felt I “couldn’t be bothered” the staff and Members always helped me to keep going. Bluecoat Sports is such a family friendly centre and I can honestly say, I’ve never known a Fitness Club like it! I still continue to exercise every week and after much encouragement, support and plenty of giggles, I’m eight and a half stone lighter! I am fitter, live a completely different lifestyle and now enjoy running about with my children! Louise Miah - 35 years

Local woman to run Brighton Half Marathon for charity Charlotte Schroeter Health & Lifestyle Reporter A young woman from Horsham will be running the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon on Sunday, February 22 in aid of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. This is the first organised run Charlotte Skipper, 23, of Horsham, has decided to take part in although it is something she has always wanted to do. Charlotte signed up for the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon with some friends and when she was looking through the list of charities she could chose to support, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research immediately stuck out for her as it is close to her heart. Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research aim to stop people dying of blood cancer and researchers are working to stop people developing blood cancer in the first place. The charity improves the lives of people with blood cancers as it believes everyone should be able to live their life to the full. Charlotte told The District Post: “My granddad had leukaemia for over 15 years and a friend of my dad has myeloma, another blood can-

cer. I’ve wanted to do a half marathon for a while as running is a hobby of mine. I really got into it last summer and I’ve found the training plan from the marathon organisers really great. “I picked a plan that suited my lifestyle and have built up my running distances. It’s a 16 week plan and I currently run three times a week, two shorter runs on two evenings after work and one long run at the weekend. “Completing the training has meant I’ve exercised over Christmas and throughout winter. It’s actually quite nice to run in colder temperatures.” The Vitality Brighton Half Marathon is now in its 25th year and is a 13 mile route around the city starting and finishing on Madeira Drive, situated between Brighton Pier and Brighton Marina. “I’d love to do another half marathon after this one and I’m aiming to complete a full marathon as I’m enjoying the training so much.” If you would like to sponsor Charlotte and support the work of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, you can donate by visiting www.justgiving.com/Charlotte-Skipper1.

Get fit whilst raising vital funds for Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance Are you looking to get fit or simply looking for a New Year challenge? Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is appealing for runners and cyclists to sign up to a number of challenge and fitness events in 2015 as the charity celebrates its 25th anniversary. The charity has places available for the Brighton Marathon on April 12, when air ambulance paramedic Lewis Price will be among the runners, and the London 10k on July 12. All entrants will be supported and given sponsor forms, a fundraising pack, training guides, an air ambulance running vest and a chance to see the helicopter and meet the crew. Riders are also needed for the charity’s Double 100 Cycle Challenge on September 27, a 100-mile or 100km bike ride which will this year include a 25-mile route. Community fundraising officer Michelle Woodland said: “This is the traditionally the time of year when people are looking to get in shape and set their targets for the year ahead. This is a really special year for us at the air ambulance as we celebrate our Silver Jubilee so please get involved and be part of it by taking on one of our challenges.” Other events in the fundraising calendar include the GS Avanti Kentish Killer on February 15, Hastings Half Marathon (March 22), Paddock Wood Half Marathon (March

(L-R) Air Ambulance doctor Hania Glinska and Paramedic Sloane Phillips pictured at the Mall during last year’s London 10k 29), Brighton 10k (April 12), Warrior Run (April 19), Tonbridge Triathlon (May 4), London to Brighton 100k Challenge (May 23/24), BUPA London 10k (May 25), Reigate Half Marathon (September 20), Bexhill Triathlon and Duathlon (September 27), and Barns Green Half Marathon (also September 27). The Air Ambulance service in Kent, Surrey and Sussex costs around £6 million annually to stay airborne. Receiving no funding from the National Lottery, the charity relies almost entirely upon the generosity of the public to support the two helicopters based at Marden in Kent and Redhill in Surrey. Inspirational interiors at Marringdean Acres

Ralph Lauren and The White Company were the inspiration for the interior design of the brand new show home at Marringdean Acres, the popular Billingshurst development by Fabrica by A2Dominion, according to their interior designer, Hannah Freeman of Phoenix Designs. Hannah said: “The design will definitely have a neutral, elegant ‘Ralph Lauren’ feel with bursts of navy for a smart country look combining urban and rural elements. “As a four bedroom family home there has been plenty of space to

create an interior which has some really unusual features. “Personally I love the textured wallpaper in the living room and the geometric cushions which have added a contemporary feel. We’ve also included a luxurious bed with a curved button headboard in the master suite from The White Company and ‘shutter’ wallpaper from the Andrew Martin collection.” The show home, which opens to prospective buyers on 31st January, provides generous accommodation for all the family with

an open plan kitchen/dining area leading out onto the garden for summer entertaining as well as a separate living room and study/ play room. Upstairs, there are four generously sized bedrooms, two of which have ensuite shower rooms. Susan Wadsworth, Head of New Homes at selling agents Henry Adams comments: “It’s always exciting to see a new show home unveiled and this promises to be something special which I’m sure will appeal to families in the area who have been drawn to all the ben-

efits of Cereston. Top UK pole vaulter Tamsin Campbell

On Saturday January 24, fifteenyear-old pole vaulter Tamsin Campbell competed at the London Indoor Games at Lee Valley Athletics Centre and won the competition with a personal best of 3.51m. As a result of the victory Tamsin, who is a student at Farlington School, is now the UK’s number 1 Under-17 pole vaulter and fifth on the South of England all-time list. Last summer Tamsin was awarded talented athlete achievement support by the GLL Sport Foundation. She features on the foundation’s website as a supported athlete and receives a grant to cover equipment, training and competition costs, and free K2 membership. Sara Whittaker, Director of PE

This is a tough 28.2 mile trail beginning at Shoreham and following one side of the River Adur, picking up a part of the Downs Link near Partridge Green, and back down the other side of the river. It is advertised as ‘not your usual type of marathon’ and guarantees a nice muddy run and fully laden aid stations. Five Horsham Joggers took on the challenge with finishing times as follows: Maldwyn Thornton 4 hrs 10 mins, Alan Pettitt 4 hrs 21 mins, Paul Burgess 5 hrs 17 mins, Chris Yeomans 5 hrs 31 mins and Pete Thirkettle 5 hrs 33 mins.

Sidelined by the weather last week and without a win since the end of November Horsham bounced back in style, entertaining their biggest crowd of the season with a storming victory. Two early attacks by Noah Chinn came to nought but as Horsham increased their possession Jack Dean finished a long run by enabling Cirdec Atkinson to score. Horsham scrambled away a rare attack by the visitors and earned short corners that they were unable to fulfil to lead 1-0 at the break. However, within three minutes of the restart Horsham made certain of winning. First John Burroughs burst through Tunbridge’s suspect defence for Jack Dean to find the net before Matt Hough converted a

short corner. Then Joe Humphreys followed with two goals, the second from a superb strike warranting a memorable celebration. A Freddie Campbell reverse stick smash was somehow averted, drawing another excellent save from the Tunbridge keeper, but for whom the 5-0 scoreline could have doubled. Horsham captain Duncan Howarth said: “Our second half purple patch was excellent. Joe Humphreys insisted on going back on the right, telling me that’s where he scores his goals – and he promptly proved it - twice!” Team Manager Al Campbell told us: “Our two goals in three minutes killed it for them and it was great to keep a clean sheet.” Runaway leaders Henley, still unbeaten, are seven points ahead of Banbury with Trojans third on 29 points. Horsham (27) remain fourth but with a game in hand and a double pointer in prospect tomorrow (Saturday 31) when they travel to Southampton to take on Trojans, whom they beat 6-2 at home in October.

and Games at Farlington, says, “Tamsin is a very talented athlete who is working hard to fulfil her potential. She has great determination and is one of our outstanding Sports Scholars.” Farlington achieved further sporting success on Saturday 24 when Sophie Kitson won two trophies for badminton in the 17th Annual Mid-Sussex Junior Badminton Tournament in Haywards Heath. Despite not playing competitive badminton for over a year the thirteen-year-old came first in both the Under-14 Girls Singles and Doubles events. Sara Whittaker said “It is good to see Sophie developing her talents for badminton. She has had great success in tennis and is continuing to do well in that sport, so it is exciting to see her achieving in other areas.”

Farlington U11 tournament winners Netball Dave Smith – Sports Editor Farlington School’s netball team won the recent Under-11 netball tournament held at Windlesham House. The tournament took place in very cold and wet conditions that all the teams taking part did well to combat. Despite losing the opening game 1-0 to Holmwood House the Farlington girls rallied well and won the next four matches 6-1, 3-1, 3-2 and 5-0 to reach the quarter final. Farlington faced Bedes in the quarter final and after starting strongly the team went on to win comfortably 8-0. This now put Farlington up against Holmwood House in the semi final, the team they had lost to earlier in the first match. This time, buoyed by winning the last five games, Farlington won a tightly

contested match 2-1. Farlington were joined in the final by Burgess Hill, a team that they had lost heavily to last year. Under the floodlights and with the temperature around zero the final was hotly contested with Burgess Hill equalising in the second half an earlier Farlington lead. At the final whistle the score remained 1-1 so three minutes of extra time was added. With just a minute of the extra time to play the Burgess Hill goalkeeper was guilty of obstruction from which a very nervous Maddy Giller stepped up and calmly netted the ball. After a long hard, cold and demanding day of play the Farlington team of Maddy Giller, Isabella Hayes, Liesl Bridge-Butler, Evie Marsden, Holly Cannons, Emilia Fisher and Imogen Rimer deservedly collected their winner’s medals and shield.

from Luke P ensured the points were shared when the team travelled to St Pauls Panthers. Sparrows Under 18 – The team travelled to Worthing for a cup fixture and lost 2-1. After going a goal down Sparrows equalised with a superbly taken free kick from Noah. A second half penalty saw Worthing snatch the win in what was a hard fought and close game. Sparrows Under 12 girls – The team managed their first game for 3 months last Sunday, away to Lewes Bridge View. The girls turned in a strong performance winning 6-0 on a heavy pitch. Both Elisha S and Jess N bagged two goals whilst Holly S turned in a player of the match performance. The win moves the team up to 4th on the table. Sparrows Under 18 girls – A disappointing result for Sparrows as the girls lost 1-8 to a very strong Crawley team. 3 unfortunate in-

juries meant the team was under strength after 10 minutes and despite a fantastic 25yd strike from Naomi and a great performance from Hope, Crawley took control as the game went on.

Chesworth Rovers U11 9 - 0 Crawley Down Gatwick U11

Chesworth Rovers U11 eased past Crawley Down in the Heron Way Cup with Josh grabbing a superb first half hat trick. Chesworth’s top scorer Toby added two more goals, the second of which was a screamer from outside the area. Lewis added another in the first half to give Rovers a six goal lead which was added to by three second half goals from Seb, Elliott and Finlay making the final score 9-0. Match 2 was another home win with Nyle scoring 2 and Luke bagging his first goal in 2 seasons with a terrific volley.

Chesworth Rovers 6 - 3 Brockham Badgers Black

Chesworth Rovers U14 marked their first league game for two months with an excellent performance to beat Brockham Badgers 6-3. Michael Murray, a recent signing from Horsham Sparrows, scored five as he ripped through the Badgers’ defence, with Jack Frankland

Roffey Robins Athletic U15 0 – 3 Henfield U15

After a lengthy break due to Christmas and the bad weather, Robins were back in action for the first time since November. Despite the long layoff, Robins made top of the table Henfield work hard for their victory. The score would have been a lot higher but for a fine defensive performance by Robins’ back four of Mapait, Cranston, Lamberty and Read. Robins, however, did create a couple of chances. Harry Lord struck the bar from close range in the first half and hit a powerful shot just past the post in the second. Henfield’s goals were scored by Church, Neale and Robertson.

Saturday January 24 - Sussex County League Div 1 Hailsham Town 3 - 5 Broadbridge Heath Football Dave Smith – Sports Editor Heavy overnight rain had put this match in doubt right up until the kick off, however having been deemed playable the saturated pitch let to a glut of goals and a good victory for Heath. Heath started well and had efforts by Jake Holmes, starting a game for the first time since October, and Ollie Moore well saved by the Hailsham keeper. Hailsham then came more into it and took the lead through Craig Norman who combined with Jamie Salvidge before slotting past Heath keeper Michael Chester. Minutes later Heath went 2 down when Dan Attwater gave away a penalty and the prolific Salvidge scored from the spot. In response manager Steve Painter switched to a 4-5-1 formation and the tactical change led immediately to a goal from Jake Legrange who pounced on a loose ball to score from close range. Minutes later the scores were level after Legrange’s cross found Holmes who took

the ball around a defender before placing the ball wide of the keeper. In a complete turnaround Ollie Moore netted just before the break to give Heath a 3-2 half time lead. Hailsham started the second half well forcing Chester into a few good saves. However midway through the half Mark Bevan combined with Holmes and Kieron Grieg before hitting a left foot shot wide of the Hailsham keeper into the net for Heath’s fourth. Hailsham refused to lie down and responded with a goal from Craig Norman who fired home from the edge of the area to decrease Hailsham’s deficit to a single goal. It led to a nervy closing few minutes for Heath before Moore settled the game in the last minute with his 14th goal of the season. After the game manager Steve Painter said, “Without Tiago (Andrade) or Jack (McNab), and with Jake Holmes lack of fitness I decided to start with a 4:4:2 formation but it was clear that wasn’t working so I changed it and I’m pleased I did.” Heath Team: M Chester, Alfieri (Clark 68), Bevan, Carruthers, Attwater, Godfrey, Moore, Waddingham, Holmes, Legrange (Robinson 62), Grieg.

H

orsham’s 3 - 2 victory at South Park on Tuesday night was the clubs third win on the bounce and has lifted them off the bottom of the table and to within 2 points of fourth and fifth bottom sides, Walton Casuals and Hythe Town. The remarkable turnaround under joint-managers Anthony Storey and Cliff Cant has seen 12 points amassed in the six games played under their control; the team had only gained 17 points from their previous 24 games prior to them taking the reins. In goal Horsham always had one of the divisions’ best keepers in Gareth Williams; they now have an organised unit in front of him unlike the days when Williams was left helpless as five, six and seven goals were scored past him. Up front there is a real goal threat

Trevor McCreadie’s volley made it 2 - 1 to the Hornets in Trevor McCreadie who has taken the weight off Tony Nwachukwu’s shoulders, scoring in each of the last three games. Another ‘new’ addition, Tom Graves, joined the ranks for the trip to South Park after rejoining the club earlier in the day. Graves has over 250 appearances for the Hornets against his name and started the match in the centre of defence in place of Tom Gilbert who had not recovered from the injury he picked up against Walton Casuals. Horsham fell behind to a 24th minute Chris Smith goal but rallied quickly with Richie Welch equalising from an effort that the South Park keeper should have stopped. The half time lead for Horsham was assured by the goal of the game on 40 minutes.

Photos by John Lines Nwachukwu headed on for the lively and determined McCreadie who took one touch before hitting an unstoppable volley past the home keeper Campbell to the delight of the travelling Hornets fans. After 20 minutes of the second half South Park were level and again the goal was scored by Chris Smith who had posed a threat all night. A few matches ago, having been pegged back, the team would have folded but this group of players now show resolve and character that allowed them to push on and get a winner. The winning goal was a little fortunate in that the referee decided that an attempted clearance by a South Park defender that came at speed of his boot and straight into the arms of keeper Campbell was a back pass. From the indirect freekick, just a few yards from goal, the ball was touched to Nwachukwu who smashed it into the net passed the row of Park players on the goal line. The journey back from Reigate was a pleasant one for the Hornets, management and supporters with another vital three points in the bag. Saturday (tomorrow) sees the visit of Redhill to Gorings Mead. Redhill sit second bottom of the league, a place below the Hornets, so another win is much needed if The Great Escape is to continue.

The new look Storey and Cant inspired Hornets turned in a well organised and confident performance to inflict a damaging home defeat on Walton Casuals, one of their main relegation rivals. Despite the new management duo being without Tom Hughes, Callum Sherriff, Bailo Camara, Tom Vickers and Lewis Hamilton, resulting in Anthony Storey having to play himself, this was a vital and well earned victory that gave the Hornets back to back wins for the first time since last April. More importantly they have now moved level on points with Ramsgate and Redhill and are now just six points adrift of Walton Casuals who lie just above the relegation places; the Hornets are at home to Redhill tomorrow (Saturday 31). The first half was a poor affair with both sides letting the importance of the result prevent any constructive football. McCreadie and Nwachukwu worked hard up front for Horsham and ex Hornet Billy Dunn was well marked at the other end. The referees’ half time whistle brought to an end a forgettable 45 minutes in which George Branford’s dubious yellow card was the main talking point.

Storey picked up an injury and replaced himself with Gregg Berry, at the same time replacing Izokun with Saul Otobo. The two substitutes both immediately went close to scoring, Otobo forcing a save from keeper Tom Wellham that led to Berry hitting the post from the rebound when he really should have scored. It was only minutes later however that Horsham took the lead through striker McCreadie who calmly slotted the ball into the net after being put through on goal. Strorey and Cant were forced into another change when Tom Gilbert took a heavy challenge and was replaced by Oli Lockyer. Casuals now had to go for it resulting in the Hornets defence and keeper Williams needing to be strong and organised, of which they were. The game was wrapped up in the 76th minute when Berry’s run into the Casuals’ penalty area was stopped by a foul from Tyler Myers and ‘penalty king’ Tony Nwachukwu found the roof of the net from the spot to make it 2-0. The home side did have the last two chances of the match but the referee’s whistle brought to an end a contest that could be another step in the Hornets ‘Great Escape’. Goal scorers: McCreadie (57) Nwachukwu (pen, 76). Horsham Team: Williams, Akande, Hope, Gilbert (Lockyer, 72) Page, Storey (Otobo, 52) Branford, Welch, McCreadie, Nwachukwu, Izokun (Berry, 51).
