This season, we will take a look at four standout trends that are influencing the best in class from a West Coast point of view. Sports-infused fashion is given an all-American twist with roots in gym, skate, street and laidback loungewear. The lumberjack has infused Fall’s most prominent fashion statement—masculinity, the art of bushy beards, outdoor adventure, and a tough nature. Buffalo plaid and checks have never looked so cool. Focus on the new urban sophisticate: classic and clean. The look is neat, polished, put-together with cohesive pieces along with his go-to favorite, tennis shoes. Gypsy King plays to the nature of the Cali bohemian movement highlighted by artisan prints. Worn-in denim has a retro flair influenced by the alternative indie rock movement that embraces retro with a modern day attitude. On the following pages, we call out the must-have items in young men’s and boys’ and what not to miss while shopping in L.A. The Directives West team provides comprehensive industry awareness that impacts the retail environment. We look forward to working with you on a one-on-one basis throughout the season.

Sports-infused fashion is given an all-American twist with roots in gym, skate, street and laidback loungewear. Athleisure encompasses a broad range of product and has become the everyday must-have trend. Urban styling sees silhouettes slouchy, tunic length and oversized with digitized graphics, pro-sport jerseys and daring colorblocking. The contemporary Cali cool dresser exemplifies luxury lounge with head-to-toe worn knits, a range of buttery soft fabric and textures worn with an understated, sophisticated edge. Joggers continue to dominate, the track jacket offers a bit of retro flair, and the sweatshirt is modernized with cut-off sleeves. Hybrid, performance tech and fleece fabrics invented for form and function continue to excite the true fitness enthusiast as well as the active fashion trendsetter. The legging, edgy sport trouser and hook-up adds newness.

The lumberjack has infused fall’s most prominent fashion statement—masculinity and bushy beards, outdoor adventure, and a tough nature typifies this rugged look. Buffalo plaid and checks have never looked so cool: The red and black combo is used in outerwear, shirt jackets, and as pieced details. This mountain man is put together with chunky sweaters in textured neutrals, Fair Isle and Nordic prints, puffer vests and mini-cord shirtings. Denim-on-denim looks are paired back to the jean jacket and dark selvedge jeans. A California twist has all these layers styled with the jogger. Cold weather dominates outerwear in utility jackets with coated canvas, nylon, fashion pockets, quilted lining and Shearling details. Color focus is on the blue story, cherry red, tan, and hunter green, plus black and white. Slim baby cord, chino and cargo lead the non-denim bottom category with worn-in and retro-inspired details. Tri-blends, slub and indigo knits in the henley, raglan and layering tees complete the feel. In boys, this theme includes thermal, Sherpa lining, camouflage, bandana prints, Timberland boots and beanies.

The New Normal

Maison Kitsune

Focus on the new urban sophisticate: classic and clean. The look is neat, polished, put-together with cohesive pieces along with his go-to favorite, tennis shoes. Understated dressing is broad from the casual winter surf lifestyle to the night dresser. The school boy uniform takes on retro slim shirting buttoned to the neck in crisp white, plaid, check and stripe patterns, and chambrays paired to the important third layer, dusters in new lengths and lightweight jackets. Luxury knits highlighted by texture innovation elevate comfort and style in the shawl collar sweatshirt, French terry cardigan, indulgent supple layering tees and dressy joggers. Wear-to-work shapes are modern and seen in the slim trouser with rolled hems and ankle length sas well as indigo knit and dark selvedge denim in tapered fits. Neutral palettes are key in a range of grays and tans, white-and-black and a blue story.

Gypsy King

Richard James

Experimenting with print/patterns, extreme washes and an array of rich hues, the Gypsy King plays to the nature of the Cali bohemian movement highlighted by artisan prints: tribal, Aztec, intarsias, bandana and ethnic. Camo and updated military looks are new with utilitarian and grungy details. Worn-in denim has a retro flair with rips and tears; destruction is influenced by the alternative indie rock movement that embraces retro yet twists it with a modern day attitude. No-rules dressing shines with fur details, leather jackets, ’70s-inspired graphics and deep burgundy tones. Sweaters are integral to this trend in button cardigans, shawl collar necklines and pullover crews. Slim chino, baby cord and cargo bottoms are paired to the shirt jacket, puffer vest, Sherpa-lined collars, retro nylon flight bomber, plaid flannels, distressed tees and the textured layer knit.
