SEASONAL OVERVIEW The key takeaways from the Spring/Summer 2016 fabric shows revolved around retro simplicity and active-inspired experimentation. We saw a return to basics in raw and imperfect fabrics, and a simultaneous interest in the minimal design of lightweight and ethereal textiles. Reflecting the mood of the moment, a renewed interest of basic prints—houndstooth or glen plaid—in casual fabrications dominated. Selvedge denim in white, indigo or navy epitomizes durability designed for a work-centric lifestyle. Elongated slubs feel particularly new, and rife with rustic imperfections. Texture takes on new importance in waffle-weaves, diamonds and honeycomb textiles, giving age-old techniques 3-D dimensionality. Plissé seersuckers and puckered fabrics give off a bubbly effect, reflecting the growing appeal of new surface dimension. Openwork, delicate and feminine in floral patterns, looks playful but sophisticated in bright youthful colorations. Tiny prints appear in droves, from geometric shapes to nautical conversationals, and reference digital clip art and vintage prints: 21st century modernism is an incoherent blend of our digital and analog past. Artistic boldness imbues retro florals, painterly brush strokes and watercolor bleeds with an avant-garde vibe of experimentation. Capturing the bohemian senseibility, irregular patchwork and pattern mixing take on a folk-inspired feeling, while Ikat-dyed textiles and tribal geometrics evoke handwoven techniques and faraway cultures. New innovations in swimwear and activewear blend together in chlorine-resistant, fast drying fabrics. Stretchy spandex and spongey scuba fit both aquatic and active needs in vibrant, attention-grabbing colors like coral, aqua, orange and yellow. Tech-inspired metallic coatings, clear glazes and paper-like textiles are forward-thinking and futuristic.

GENERAL IMPRESSIONS Laying bare its simplistic threads, Element is the search for modern essentials. Basic patterns woven on simple looms evoke a timeless artisan desire for pared-down perfection. Japanese-inspired indigo—the deepest of oceanic blues—tells the story of hand-dyed, ancient techniques. Process belies essentialism with raw and selvedged denim, subtly hinting back to a now distant industrialized past. Simple stripes and classic plaids evoke wardrobes stocked with modern workwear. Earthy shades of khaki and natural linens speak to a minimalism where function and durability create a style of essential practicality.

Movement, from marathons and bike races to leisurely strolls and quotidian tasks, completes the picture of modern day mobility. Synthetics, breathable rainwear and shimmering coated jerseys allow for extreme sport and everyday rainstorms. Double-faced mesh with sneaky pops of color and laser cut details evoke the precision of the postmodern age, perfectly adapting to a 21st century blur of information. Shiny metallic cottons are reminiscent of the silvery sheen of computers, while delicate knits and paper thin organza expose the skin to the elements. In steely shades of gray offset by blushing neutrals, Motion faces the present but is prepared for the future.
