hat, it’s February already? Where did 2021 and then January go? At least by now we’ll have got rid of COVID-19 won’t we? Eh? We haven’t? Oh. Fear not dear readers, should you be stuck in quarantine at home, held in a nasty hotel waiting to play tennis or simply confused by whatever rule was imposed within the last couple of hours, we at the French House are still here for you. Even if you don’t want us to be. So, without further ado, pause or addition to bulk out the required word count, let us wish you all the best for 2022 and then get cracking with the reason you’re here. Freesat is not the same as Freeview. The clue is in the name. Apologies if I’m repeating myself, but I often hear people saying that they need a ‘Humax’ box to get UK TV. This is not exclusively the case. Humax are a manufacturer of satellite receivers and they used to, but no longer, make Freesat boxes for the Freesat service. It is pretty much impossible to purchase a Humax Freesat box these days. They stopped producing them over two years ago. So, the chances are that you need a ‘Freesat’ receiver. Especially if you don’t want to go down the route of a Sky subscription package. There is only one choice of Freesat recorder at present (with three different choices of hard-drive size. 500GB, 1TB & 2TB) and two choices for a non-recording unit. If installing your own satellite dish, make sure you don’t position the wall bracket too close to your guttering. I see many installations where the client cannot find the signal because the dish, when mounted on the bracket, simply cannot be turned far enough due to it hitting the gutter (or the wall perhaps). Your dish for both UK and French TV needs to point roughly south east so please make sure you give yourself enough room. I was too late for the December edition, but Channel 4 HD is back on Freesat. It can be found at position 126. There are also some music channels which have made their return and these can be found starting at position 501. If these do not currently appear on your Freesat box, you may need to run a ‘channel search’ to find them. Talking of which, if you find your satellite receiver unresponsive and you think you have no signal, try switching it off and back on again. It’s quite surprising the number of times that just doing this will fix the issue. If it does, you know where to send the cheque. New year but same old internet? Don’t forget that satellite internet is now a viable option. Neosat from Nordnet (owned by Orange) offers download speeds of ‘up to’ 100Mbps. This is good, even if you’ll never actually get those speeds - expect around 70Mbps on average. Upload is limited to 5Mbps, which is also pretty good for most people. It’s certainly better than the average ADSL line. Just ensure that everything you need is compatible with satellite internet before you subscribe. With the increasing focus on working from home, potential users need to ensure that their office systems are able to be accessed remotely. All the speed in the world won’t help if you can’t connect.

Neosat uses a satellite at 7.2° east of south. So, if you think the system might be suitable for you, then you need to be sure you have a suitable, unobstructed location to mount the dish. The kit Nordnet supply comes with a sturdy wall bracket as the system isn’t ideally suited for a chimney. Whilst we can’t supply the kit, we can certainly install it for you. Also, just for clarification, you can’t use an old satellite internet dish for satellite TV reception. The LNB (or Tria) is not suitable for TV. It is possible to fit an LNB for TV with a special bracket but it really isn’t worth the hassle. e are Rob and Steve, “The Vineyard Guys” from Clos Vieux Rochers which is nestled in the rolling countryside on the outskirts of Puisseguin just 12km from Saint Emilion and Castillon La Bataille, in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region. Our wine is a Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux made with traditional values, an honest wine for the modern drinker, produced by artisans, made with passion with all the nuances you would expect from a quality wine. With four gites set in the vineyard for visitors to enjoy…. but how did we end up here? Back in early 2015 we had sold our business in the UK and were very unsure what our next step would be. With years of experience in hospitality, bars, restaurants, hotels and retail, it was inevitable that those skills would draw us to something that involved looking after people but what? When asked by a dear friend “So what are you guys going to do now?” our answer was we didn’t know, so the

suggestion came to explore this region of France. Now people that relocate to France have normally holidayed or spent time in France but we had only ever passed through, so we landed at the airport and our tour of the Gironde / Dordogne regions began. So what do a couple of young guys look for? (OK not that young) well we were looking for what a lot of people do that move to France, nice house, gite or two and a slower pace of life. That was the plan, so the search began. We won’t bore you with the details of how many not quite right properties we viewed, the piles of stone, the bad renovations and the simply just No! On one of our viewing days we were asked if we minded if the agent took us to a small vineyard that had recently been added to their list that he would like to see. So always willing to have a look around a property or two we said yes.

Expectations and imagination conjure up an image when someone says “vineyard” so as we turned down the drive and approached the property our jaws dropped…. “Curb appeal” is a phrase you may have heard or “dress your property for viewing” well that is not really how it is done in France and this property was no different. Once the initial shock had passed and we had been shown around the property, we took a stroll around the vines on our own. I don’t think either of us ever imagined we would be viewing a vineyard on our visit, let alone be stood amongst the vines actually contemplating whether this could be the property for us. Ok we had knowledge of wine and not just from drinking it, but could we make wine? The one house was just waiting to fall down

and the other was not exactly ready to move into. The more we talked the more we saw the potential, renovate the old house, turn the other into four one bedroom gites and make wine, simple, who wouldn’t see this lifestyle property as fitting the bill of being perfect for the semi-retirement move to France? Well, naive we are not and the work involved we realised was going to be enormous, were we too old for this size of project or did we have one more big one in us? So we returned to the UK to contemplate the reality of buying such a property and what the project would entail. After deciding we were up for the challenge, we returned to France for a second look and to make sure it wasn’t just a bright idea. On the 28th of August 2015 we were handed the keys with the owners parting words…. “les toilettes de la maison ne fonctionnent pas” welcome to France. With no working loo we checked back into the hotel for a few nights. Then the hard work began to turn the rundown vineyard into “Clos Vieux Rochers Vineyard and Gites” that we now call home.

ENJOYING FRENCH

New Year, for which I wish all of you freedom from the restrictions placed upon us and good health, untainted by the threat of Covid-19. The holiday period was a quiet one for me, in which I read more than usual; the books were a mixture of detectives and SciFi (mostly mediocre), a popular science tome and a new book from one of the French authors whose work I have read before . Books take months if not years to be written and published, and the reading thereof is accomplished in a matter of days if not hours, and so simple maths show that you have to have a rather large stable of authors. Mind you, some SciFi authors can manage multiple books per year, but of a rather mixed quality and certainly not, I think, of the most imaginative sort. But I will get back to the topic in hand – French and French authors. All three of the following authors write quality books, with plots that are reasonable and with quiet, substantial main characters. Bruno Robert des Douets – Series “Le prevôt de Mont Saint Michel” This is set in 1160 and the years thereafter, and the main person, Ascelin de Roncei, is the provost of the monastery of Mont Saint Michel. He was a crusader who later took monastic vows and became responsible for the security of the monastery. The problems and mysteries that he is involved in are linked to real historical situations, and so we see, for example, Hildegard von Bingen (abbess, mystic, writer of books on herbal medicinal lore, composer and indeed an intellectual of her age) and Aliénor d’Aquitaine appearing briefly.

The series so far consists of six books, with all the action taking place in coastal Normandy and in particular the wide area where the monastery had property. This, by the way, extends in the third book, Le terrifiant cercueil en étain, to the monastery of St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall, which was a daughter community of the Norman Mont Saint Michel. In the first book, Le secret du manuscrit perdu, Provost Ascelin de Roncei, aided by his sergeant-at-arms and his men, investigates the loss of a precious manuscript from the monastery library. The abbot, Dom Robert de Torigni, is concerned not only about the loss of the book itself, but also about the loss of the rumoured content – magic spells and formulae. The most recent book in the series, L'ensorcellement du Mont Dolent, deals with the resurgence of some of the old, druidic beliefs of the Gallic forebears of the local inhabitants, although this topic does not occupy the entire story. All told, these books provide interesting history, well-drawn and consistent characters, and convincing plots, and the reader can follow the movements of the characters on the IGN maps. Giles Houdouin – Series “Une enquête en Anjou” This series plays at the beginning of the reign of Louis XIII of France, and the two main characters are “sergents royals ”, men who are responsible to the king for the administration of the law in their respective communes, in their case to the east of Angers, on the Loire. Brothers-in-law, they are part of the farming and wine-growing community, and the three books are set in the region between Angers and Saumur. The books published so far are written from the point of view of Thomas,

“sergent royal” of Brain-sur-l'Authion, in Anjou, and they remain local to Angers and to the Loire to the east.

There is also a romance so delicately handled that you can easily miss it – makes a change from modernity. Detective investigative stories are all very much the same, that is, they involve interviewing of persons concerned, gathering evidence and making inferences, leading to the apprehension of the criminal. These books are no exception to the rule, but they work within the legal and political limits of the time. What is interesting is the combination of the fast travel by train to the metropolis and the slow use of horse and shanks’ pony out in the countryside. Also, there is a lot of cooperation between the police and the Gendarmerie, from whom aid comes in the form of a squad of soldiers on horseback. No crime scene investigators, and precious little forensic evidence, but still policing as we know it, in both organisation and intent. If you have read any of Anne Perry’s Victorian-period detectives, William Monk and, set a bit later, Thomas Pitt, you will find the same organisation, again without modern investigative infrastructure (most if not all of these Anne Perry books are available in French translation).

The first book, Au nom de la mère et du fils, concerns the armed conflict between Louis XIII and his mother, Marie de’ Medici, at Les Ponts-de-Cé, in August 1620, and the secret manoeuvring between the parties concerned. The story runs from Thomas’s village through to the machinations of the great nobles, involving villagers, spies and historical figures. Les gabeleux, the latest book, deals with salt smuggling on the Loire between the salt flats of Guérande and the hinterland of France, and of course there is a second plot involved with the first – but to say more would reveal too much. All three books deal with country life and the conditions under which the poor folk of country and town had to live, coping with famine, disease and the winter cold. François Lange – Series “Les enquêtes de Fañch Le Roy” The publisher of these books, Éditions du Palémon, also publishes Jean Failler’s books. They are a Breton publisher, and the authors and subjects have a strong connection with Brittany. Many of their books are detective (polar) investigations, and these books written by François Lange are no exception.

So, five books in the series thus far – all enjoyable and instructive because you are taken through the Brittany landscape in each book. Relatively easy to read, although as always, the Kindle dictionary does trojan service.

The main character is Fañch Le Roy, a police investigator in the period of Napoléon III who is based in Quimper. Most of the action takes place in Finistère (also in Brittany), although one book finishes up in Paris. The books deal mostly with local criminality, but there is a general theme that runs through them concerning royalist plots to overthrow the emperor.

I have been writing these articles not really as reviews, but more as a way of trying to communicate my own pleasure in reading the books. If you would like a deeper description of the plot of any of the books, then that is to be found on the Amazon website.
