CSC All-American thrower Mel Herl, senior of Eaton, Colorado, outdid herself in the throwing events, once again, Sunday at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Tom Benish Invitational. Herl claimed gold in the discus and shot put with marks of 174 feet, 4 inches, and 50-2, respectively. She also placed third in the hammer throw, tossing 195-9. Herl’s discus and hammer throws bested her previous school records in each event. Nationally, she is ranked third, fourth, and fifth in the hammer throw, shot put, and discus, respectively. Her hammer throw is also an automatically-qualifying mark for the NCAA D-II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May. Herl has now automatically qualified in two events: hammer throw and discus, as well as provisionally qualifying in the shot put. Herl was also chosen as this week’s RMAC Field Athlete of the Week. “The meet this weekend had great competition that allowed me to move my marks,” Herl said. “I had a lot of fun throwing at UNC because the atmosphere brought great throws from a lot of girls. Taking momentum from this meet into my training will be a great stepping stone as we work toward the national meet at the end of May.” On the men’s side, Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, won the 1500m in 4:01.59. Garcia traveled to Phoenix after the meet to be recognized for receiving the NCAA Elite 90 Award at the 2016 NCAA D-II Cross Country Championships in November. The Elite 90 Award is presented to one student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average who is competing at each of the NCAA
